Ample parking facilities shared with Kwik Save

As I write, the Road Traffic Reduction bill is going through Parliament. Government figures link 24,000 deaths a year to air pollution. The cause - particulates, which are tiny particles from car exhausts , are being linked to cancer.

Government figures show that these particulates exceeded safe limits on 51 days in the centre of Leeds last year. One wonders how many days in the year the figures would show for the big road junction in Kirkstall. 151, 251 or 351 ?

One can almost taste the pollution at the junction. Try the bus stop on Abbey Road, if you don't believe me.

So, what do we want ? We want the traffic to be reduced .. An end to gridlocks and tailbacks bringing with them danger and pollution. We suggest a better public transport system. We seek the opening of rail stations at Kirkstall and Hawksworth. We know this means putting more money into public transport. We reject the 'conventional wisdom' about the cutting of public expenditure. We believe, on the contrary, that this country - not a poor country -- should spend more on education, health, welfare and transport. We hold the view that the creation of public squalor in a sea of private affluence for some people is wrong. lt is out of line with what people want.

As if the present situation were not bad enough, we are expected to sit idly by and allow a scheme for an unwanted supermarket, petrol station and a thousand car parking spaces to come about. Remember the scheme was given permission by an unelected quango in the face of local opposition in a saga of trickery, deceit and evasion which diligent readers of this magazine have been told about as the whole unhappy story has unfolded. We hope that the highways scheme to complete the scheme will be thrown out by the Government Inspector who ran the recent public inquiry when he comes to decide in early March.

Which brings me to the need for local views - of whatever flavour -to be put forward and where better than in a community organisation where a non political party and a non sectarian policy allows space for everyone to say what they think. An opportunity comes at the KVCA annual general meeting which will be held this year at a new venue (The Kirkstall Brewery bar of the LMU Students' Union on Broad Lane) on Tuesday 3 March at 7.45 p.m. Anyone with a transport problem, please contact me on 275 7981.

MATTERS THE KVCA IS TWENTY YEARS OLD In January 1978, a small group of Kirkstall residents got together to object to the proposed development by Barratt's, the builders, of a two acre site on Morris Lane. The group's action was successful, and it was from this small beginning that the Kirkstall Village Community Association was formed.

In May of 1978, 150 people attended the KVCA'S first public meeting. This approved a constitution for the KVCA and more people joined the original steering committee. One of the decisions to flow from the early KVCA meeting was the proposal to set up KIRKSTALL MATTERS which first appeared in the autumn of 1978.

MILLS AND ALLEN There is a small piece of land, which consists largely of a steep grassed bank, running from Kirkstall Lane down to the rear of station parade. lt is owned by Mills and Alien, the billboard operators Part of the site contains such hoardings, planning permission for the continuance of these was refused by Leeds City Council, following a planning application in 1991 .

The decision was later upheld, on appeal,

by The Department Of The Enviroment.

On two occasions, within recent years, M & A have tried to obtain approval for housing on this site. This was refused by Leeds City Council, the decision being upheld by the DOE. The DOE gave good reasons for retaining this land as an open space. With this in mind, the KVCA approached M & A , to see whether they would be prepared to donate the land to the local community for recreational use and or environmental improvement.

As can be seen from from the letter printed below M & A did not agree to this request.

Thank you for your letter of 24 November.

Our duty as employees of the company is to act in the best financial interests of our shareholders and we are therefore unable to comply with your request to donate our land at the above address to the local community. If there had still been advertising panels in place, the situation may have been different, as we would have been receiving an income from the site and could have considered allowing the public use of the back/and. As this is no longer the case, the advertising having been discontinued by the Local Authority, we are obliged to look for some profitable means of using or disposing of this property

BOWLING CLUB HOPE TO BUILD ON LAST SEASON'S INITIATIVE The Kirkstall Abbey Bowling Club last year entered a team in the Leeds Parks Evening_ League for the first time and came ninth in their league. The team also won four of thetr eight 'friendlies'. Mrs. Pat Hudson,club secretary,feels that 1998 will bring a modest advance.

The re-opening takes place on 12 Marchand pride of place will go to the Kirkstall Ward councillors who have contributed financially to the cost of some.of the improvements. lt is hoped that freeswimming lessons will become available for 400 children who perhaps otherwise would not get their chance to use the pool.

The KVCA have made a further donation this time to Kirkstall St.Stephen's After School Club.

LETS UP AND RUNNING A Local Exchange Trading Scheme based on Hawksworth Wood has made good early progress according to Neil Colquhoun, the Hawksworth Wood Community Centre co-ordinator.

ELDERLY CARE PROJECT'S SUCCESSFUL PARTY

TRAFFIC CALMING FOR SPEN LANE AND MORRIS LANE.

120 people enjoyed the party on 10 December last at St.Mary's Church Hall, Hawksworth Wood, whre they were all well fed, well watered and well entertained.

Responding to local concerns, Leeds City Council Highways Committee are to bring in a series of low cost traffic calming measures. This will mean mini-roundabouts, speed cushions and narrowing of roads by markings. The miniroundabouts will be on Spen Lant at the junction with Butcher Hill, on Spen Lane at the junction with Queenswood Drive and on Spen Lane at the junction with Vesper Road. The speed cushions will be on Morris Lane near to The Rise and on Morris Lane near to Hesketh Mount.

There will be hatching on the outbound side of Morris Lane to narrow the road width at the top of the streets from De Lacy Mount to Norman Street.

KIRKSTALL CRUSADERS REACH THE TOP Kirkstall Crusaders under 12 football club have reached the top of their league in their very first season. the team was born after the last Kirkstalll Festival and play their home games on the Elida Gibbs playing field at Headingley. They are sponsored by Fourway Coaches, Fisher Autos and Chatfields of Leeds. There is now a very capable squad of promising players who already have acquired a reputation for skilful and committed football. In addition to managing the team, Alf.Baker- telephone 226 7987, with Paul Thorogood, club chairman,have published an entertaining monthly fanzine, aptly titled The Crusader.

50 BUS SERVICE PROTEST MOVE FOR CAROL.

The mass protest to Leeds City Link to try and get a better bus service for Hawksworth Wood has brought about a response. Steve Graham, the manager for Leeds City Link, has been up to the area and has been told, at first hand, what needs to be done.

Any practical use which would preserve the facade of this remnant of the former important building should be explored.

OBITUARY The following obituary was sent to us by a former resident of De Lacy Mount.

Francis Rouse had lived on De Lacy Mount, Kirkstall for three years prior to her sudden tragic death of a brain haemorrhage in October 1997 aged 34. She came to Leeds originally to study Health Promotion at the university, and after undertaking several projects abroad in countries such as Ghana, she returned to Leeds to teach Health Studies, first at the L M U and later at the Nuffield Institute. She is survived by her daughter Zinnie of 4 years of age who had attended North Leeds Community Nursery for several years. She is now living with her new family in Swanage Dorset.

Francis is greatly missed by her friends and neighbours on De Lacy Mount and by her wide circle of family, friends, colleagues and students.

BETTER FACILITIES REQUIRED AT THE ABBEY

Victoria Park School has received a good report from Ofsted inspectors. The social and cultural development of pupils is a major strength. is one conclusion.

Academic progress and attainment was found to be sound . The close partnership with parents and links with the community are described by Ofsted as a 'developing strength of the school' as was the quality of teaching and 'the very effective ' school management.

At present there are no toilet facilities for visitors to the Abbey. Neither are there refreshment facilities. This is a disgrace and the improvements projected for Abbey House Museum will not solve this problem. One local resident said 'I'd like to be able to spend more time at the Abbey and meet foreign visitors. lt would be nice to enjoy a coffee and a cake in the picturesque grounds.'

WON'T YOU PLEASE ROLL BACK THE STONES? Since the Classical Fantasia, the kerb stones, placed along Vesper Lane , have not been repositioned' despite numerous requests to Leisure Services. Amateur football and rugby players and supporters have further disturbed these to facilitate illegal and indiscriminate parking on the public playing fields

HORSFORTH PEOPLE PETITION FOR A TOWN COUNCIL A deputation from the Horsforth Parish Council Campaign went to Leeds City Council meeing in January with a petition from over 2000 people to get a town council for Horsforth once again.

ABBEY HOUSE MUSEUM TO BE TRANSFORMED Helped by ÂŁ1 .5 million from lottery fundgrant, the museum will get improvements to display areas, a new gallery, a re-working of the Victorian cobbled area,a new shop and cafe and the installation of a lift to the upper floor.The work is due to start in April and the museum will need to be close

PUBLIC INQUIRY Geoff Hodgson, the editor of this edition, answers a number of questions.

Q. Whatwasitabout?

A. The inquiry arose out of an appeal by Morrisons Supermarkets against the non-determination by Leeds City Council of Morrisons highways scheme to serve a planned supermarket on Bridge Road and Commercial Road, and also for a relaxation of a planr::ng condition which meant that work could not be started on the site until the highways scheme was approved.

Q. Where and when was it?

A.

At Leeds Civic Hall on the 23,24 and 25 September and the 3 and 4 December.

Q. Who took the inquiry?

A.

Mr. John Richardson, a Government Inspector.

Q. What happened when the inquiry opened?

A. There were requests from a number of members of the public for the inquiry to be adjourned because of the welter of documents only then made available. Mr. Richardson refused the requests Q.

What happened at the earlier part of the inquiry?

A. Morrisons legal representative put their case but it became clear on the key issue, that Leeds City Council had capitulated.. This was despite the decisions of the Highways Committee and the Planning Committee that Morrisons highways scheme was unsafe. When a new plan was submitted by Morrisons a few days before the inquiry opened, council officers under delegated powers, dropped their opposition.

Although a 'poor scheme', it was accepted. On the minor issue of the non-determination of the scheme within the time limit, Leeds City Council did make an effective case.

Q. What did local people do about the apparent abandonment of the Leeds City Council's opposition

A A delegation went to the next meeting of the council on the 29 October consisting of Geoff. Hodgson, Susan Chesters, Keith Layton, Andrew Neale and John Robertson. The point was made that on 5 separate occasions it seemed that the council's officers had undermined the council's policy

Q What was the response?

A The council referred the matter to the Highways Committee who instructed the Chief Officer to investigate. But no change was made to the evidence already submitted to the inquiry.

Q . What happened when the inquiry resumed on the 3 December?

A The inspector heard for one and half days 15 people representing the public. There was a superb contribution for the Kirkstall Valley Campaign by Councillor John lllingworth. There were also first class submissions from Dr. Martin Schweiger, the council's chief medical officer, David Hick for the Leeds Civic Trust, David Hall from the Sustrans cycle group, Ken Torode, chairman of Kirkstall St. Stephen's School Board of Governors and Geoff. Hodgson for the KVCA There were excellent individual contributions from Kirkstall people, namely Sue Booth, Judy Rawson, Keith Layton, John Robertson, Tom Baker, Rosie Atkins, Chris Blanchard, Steve Kind and Councillor Liz Minkin. Written submissions came from Councillor Bernard Atha and Carolina Newby.

Q.

What was the essence of these contributions?

A. In many different ways. they showed a great deal of knowledge of the actual situation facing Kirkstall people. The common theme was the traffic problem. A very difficult position at preserit which would be made much worse. even impossible, if the Morrisons scheme was agreed. 5 video tapes were made on

KIRKSTALL VALLEY SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GROUP This group was formed in 1997 and is currently a committee of the KVCA. The intention is to create an independent body with the aim of catalysing the sustainable development of the Kirkstall area. Its precise form, aims and methods have yet to be decided, but will involve public meetings and wide community and business participation.

People are needed to become involved in this project. If you are interested in participating in any way, or just want to be kept informed, please get in touch with:

A LEEDS BACK YARD A resident of Burley, Deirdre West, a town planner with Leeds City Council, has recently won a small national award from the Millenium Commission which comes into the category the Commission have called "Natural Pioneers" as they are to assist local people to set up environmental projects to be of benefit to their community. The awards are administered by the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) who, as many of you will know, in Leeds are based in our community at Hollybush on Bridge Road in Kirkstall (next to the new student flats at Kirkstall Brewery.)

Deirdre's award is to help her set up a small demonstration organic growing plot called "A Leeds Backyard" at Hollybush to show people in the form of a Leeds backyard or small city garden how they can grow some of their own food, healthify and in their own garden, even in the inner city. lt is a one-year project and she will be assisted by volunteers from the Leeds "Growing Food In Leeds" group {"GrowFil").

She will undertake some training to help her in this, partly in organic growing and partly in leading, costing and managing projects. She is linking with the national "Grow Your Own Organic Fruit and Vegetables" Campaign being run from Ryton, Coventry, by the Henry Doubleday Research Association (HDRA) and will have advice, verbal, tQ see on the ground, in leaflet form and with demonstration boards, to help visitors to the site. There will also be advice on permaculture as a number of GrowFil members are also members of the national Permaculture Association.

The plot has got off to a good start just after Christmas, with the site cleared and a raised bed under construction with old railway sleepers, thanks to "GrowFil" volunteers. Anyone interested in helping or just coming along to see can either turn up at Hollybush (ring beforehand to check opening times - Leeds 2742335) or contact Deirdre directly on Leeds 2789349 about the project or about GrowFil. John Preston at Hollybush can also assist anyone else who may be interested in applying for a "Natural Pioners" grant for any other local environmental project, so get thinking!

EYESORE ON THE AIRE

ST. ANN'S MILLS REVISITED

Following our article in the last edition of KIRKSTALL MATTERS the management of the mills contacted tenants of the mills requesting them to clean up their act, Substantial clearance took place. Our story was also taken up by Leeds Weekly News.

A visit by our reporter on New Years Day revealed that much of the previously existing refuse had been cleaned up. Disturbingly however, as our photograph shows, substantial fresh fly - tipping had occurred.

Much of this was of domestic origin, including old carpets and items of household waste. Some of the rubbish included discarded Christmas wrappings.

We would like to point out that LEEDS DEVELOPMENT AGENCY do not own the whole site. A spokesperson told us that they own some 65 - 70% . They promised to have this rubbish removed, but added that it was an ongoing problem When asked if surveillance CCTV could be installed in an attempt to catch the fly - tippers, they thought that this would not be financially possible as the industrial units on the site were let at minimal rents.

Locals who use the Goitt Side Walk will be disturbed by this eyesore. We have a good tip in Kirkstall

HISTORY OF KIRKSTALL FORGE Dear Editor, Butler's History of Kirkstall Forge has long been out of print. I am exploring the possibility of organising a reprint. I have tried all the antiquarian booksellers who might have copies of either edition without success. The idea in my mind is to publish a facsimile with an introduction or epilogue on the story after the Butlers ceased to own the Forge. Dana have only one copy of the red and blue editions and they can't be risked.

Do any of your readers have copies of the two editions that they would be willing to let me beg, borrow, buy (not steal) to progress the proposal ? For technical reasons, the History might need to be unbound for republishing but it would be in a good cause. Butler's work is a classic and I think it could be brought out at a price we could all afford if -as I suspect the copyright holders and Dana- approved.

Dear Editor,

Next time I'm asked to fill in my 'hobbies', I'm tempted to put, approaching Kirkstall Abbey from different angles. Usually it is painted from the north west angle to catch the central arch; rarely as Turner did it viewed from the south on the other side of the river close to where I live at Amen Corner.

The day after the election, the sun was warm on the cloister walls, softening the sun.

On Boxing Day it stood stark and solid and immutable in a dark grey sky. The mystery of the Abbey is its capacity to change through the seasons and yet it has stood for eight centuries, a constant paradox of change yet stability.

As we approach the new century, the swirling pace of change, economic, political and social seems to be speeding up. As the poet, Paul Valery put it, what we do know is 'the future is not what it used to be'. We can fear change washing over us, or we change. working together to shape change though that demands more than the efforts to change governments and win elections.

1997 was in my lifetime a year of tremendous political change. In practice, the hard work of reconstruction, as we move towards the new millennium, really started on 2 May, as I discovered when I was asked to go immediately to the Dept. of Trade and Industry to cover Science, Energy and Industry. But the daily 'crises' wash in like winter waves - it's back to a walk around the Abbey for a sense of perspective.

Can I wish everyone a happy 1998.

The Green Socialist Network is concerned about environmental issues and the need for socialism as the answer to the problems of a society based on class, greed and profit.

Green socialism is the merger of Red and Green which we thought were unnecessarily divided until things changed in the 1990's.

We appeal to Labour Party and Green Party members plus to those who are independent left or to those without any political affiliations and to those who are neutral or nonpolitical.

We feel that we have some of the answers for the 21st century.

This Spring we plan a meeting to hear in more detail our current politics and attitudes of green socialism.

This meeting should appeal to KVCA and Kirkstall Valley Campaign members or to the simply curious. We are NOT a political party but a new movement and we wish to influence as many people as possible.

We support the need for a sustainable development plan for Kirkstall with the involvement of the local community who should be consulted first.

Please look out for further details and notices of the meeting in due course. All will be welcome to come along and even join the network.

ELLERS COTTAGE, THE ELLARS, OR ELLERS. Situated on Leeds Bradford Road.

Among some solicitor's paperJin the West Yorkshire Archives at Sheepscar, I found an 1826 valuation of the above property in the year of the then owner's death. The value was then put at £1.300. Household goods and furniture- £11 .16s., plate, linen and china- £10.10s.6d., books, prints and pictures - £1.15s.6d. In the stables, 'horses and carriages' were estimated at £18.7s.6d. More interestingly, 'wine and other liquors given to the widow' were valued at £1 0, a sum ten times the worth of the books and pictures!

The widow mentioned was a great-great aunt of mine, Mrs. Mary Tattersall, nee Cooper. She had started life by being bom out of wedlock Gust) to a Quaker miss, Mary Eddison, younger sister of a prosperous cam factor, George Eddison of Holbeck. The erring girl was disowned by the Quakers both for bearing a child out of wedlock, and for 'marrying out' to an Armley maltster, Jeremiah Cooper, father of the infant. They were married at Rothwell church by an unquestioning cleric, and returned to Armley, with their infamous bundle. At respectable intervals after the hasty marriage, three brothers were produced for little Mary - John, Jeremian (my great-great grandfather) and George-Eddison. None were baptised, tor their mother respected the Quaker repudiation of infant baptism.

There was much matting trade in Armley in thosedays, and it was usually a family concern, outside help not often being called upon. Mary the disgraced Quaker lasted only ten years as the hardworking wife of a maltster, dying in 1800. Jeremiah Cooper re-married, and had a son, whom~ baptised along with all his former wife's children at St. Bartholomew's Church, Armley where the event was recorded in the register, showing the original birth-dates of each one, including the pre-marriage year of Mary's, in 1790.

Despite her unpromising start, Mary Cooper made an unbesmirched marriage at the age of 19 in 1809 to a young Armley maltster, Peter Tattersall, whose family appears to have had roots in Lancashire. After a few years in Armley, the pair moved down to Kirkstall, in Bramley parish, to work with Henry Cooper, cousin to Mary's father. Henry was a successful maltster who had in 17931eased a sizeable plot from Sir James Graham,a on which he built two houses, some outbuildings, and maltings. Henry lived in Cooper House (still in use by Leeds Metropolitan University in their vast student resident complex on the brewery site), and the Tattersalls were in Poplar House nearby, but it was demolished many years ago.

Cooper and Tattersall survived the difficulties suffered by the malting trade during the Napoleonic wars. As he progressed, Peter made several land transactions, one of which concerned land beside the Leeds-Liverpool canal - thelock Field, and the two Ellers closes.

Byabout 1820, he had erected a house, stables, and maltings with direct access to the Canal.

The ruins can be seen on its bank, where the water flows quiety by, overhung with trees ,and the derelict house looks out through shattered windows.

There were six Tattersall children, Thomas, William, John ,Jane, Henry and Peter; at some time an infant named Eliza had died at the age of just a year. Their mother's life must have been a hard one, for in addition to rearing a family, it is more than likely that she would have been expected to do her stint in the malting trade; it may, of course, have been an advantage to be a maltster's daughter. The process of malting is interesting but complex. Workers must have existed in a perpetual aura of heated barley;their perspiring skin, hair and clothing imbued with warm odours. After such arduous toil, one might wonder how ever the Tattersalls could have felt ready for the sort of social visiting which involved the use of those carriages and horses!

Significant deaths affected Mary Tattersall's life. Henry Cooper across the way died in 1822, Peter Tattersall died in 1826, and her elder brother George Eddison died in 1827. He left a 12 page will bestowing financial benefits down the generations to various members of his family, including 'all and every the childrefl or child of my late sister Mary Cooper, (born in lawful wedlock) .. .' Do these words refer: to the untimely birth of Mary Tattersall? Family history being the cryptic puzzle that it is, we can only surmise the outcome of George Eddison's bracketed words. Suffice to say, there is a rather improbable family story which tells of a disinherited female going into the church and attempting to tear out the page which bore testimony to the indisputable dater of her birth.

In the year of his father's death in 1826, WHiiam Tattersall was removed from Leeds Grammar School, and one must assume that this was to assist his mother at Ellers, since Peter TattersaJI had stipulated in his will that 'my dear wife' was to carry on the trade of maltster- to provide for herself and the then younger children, until Thomas, who must have been the eldest, came of age. One cannot help feeling a littte sorry for 13 year old William having his education cut short, but he must have found matting a better option than schooling, for in time he prospered. Whatever his mother's fortune or misfortune arising out of heq uncle's will. 路 Mary eventually left her sons beavering away at Kirkstall, and moved to Whitecote, Bramley, as a maltster in her own right, for it is thus that she is listed in a directory of 1839. She died in that year, at a not particularly great age, the cause of death was given at 'Hepatitis.' Considering this verdict, and thinking of her husband's alcoholic bequest to her, one begins again to speculate, and wonder if she might have been a bit of a tippler. Whatever she was, she must have been 'quite a woman.' I look at derelict Ellers, and think of her there.

William Tattersall and his wife Eliza continued working at Ellers. Some of the other members of his family lived close by, but seemed divorced from the matting trade, for the 1841 Census shows four of them, Henry, John, Jane and Peter (only 15) living in a house named 'Conservative Cottage', which is listed along with the Brewery, then in the occupation of Thomas Walker.

Ten years later, Henry, 32, 'railway clerk', is married, but his unmarried brother and sister, Peter and Jane, appear to be living with him. William is still at Ellers, with wife Eliza and four children. And William 'got on' as we say, very much so. I am not sure of the date that he left Kirkstall to go to Ripen and set up some quite large maltings which are (or were two years ago) still standing beside the now demolished railway station at Ure Bank, by the bridge. When he died in 1873, aged 60, he left a little under 拢25,CXJO, which at that time must have been a tidy sum. He had lived with his wife and family at 'Green Royds', a lovely Regency house on the Bishopton Road, just out of Ripen. (lt is still in some fortunate person's occupation.) A son, Oswald, took up the management of the Ripen maltings and by 1903 had set up two more, at Starbeck and Knaresborough.

In St. Stephen's churchyard at Kirkstall, there is a gravestone in memory of William and Eliza Tattersall and one or two daughters. This may just be a memorial stone, in view of their residing at Ripen, but I have not, so far, been able to locate another place of burial. lt seems impossible to consider their making journeys to be interred at Kirkstall. I find a William Tattersall attending St. Stephen's church, and listed as a member of 'The Men of St. Stephen's.' I await enlighterr ment.

WILD FLOWERS FOR THE OLD BRIDLE PATH November '97 saw the culmination of a project on Vesper Lane which had commenced with previous improvements.

Readers of Kirkstall Matters will have read of the initial improvements in the Mid 1996 edition.

More recently some local residents had been concerned that an inconsiderate former resident had dumped tons of building rubble in the area. The next job was to get this cleared. The local council kindly provided a couple of skips and young offenders on Community Service provided the labour to effect the clearance.

The BTCV at Hollybush Farm provided the expertise and worked with pupils from Victoria Park School, in the planting of seeds, bulbs and plants.

The KVCA provided a grant of ÂŁ50 towards the cost of the wild flowers.

We would like to thank the following ; Councillor Liz Minkin, Leeds City Council Skip Hire Section, pupils and staff of Victoria Park School, West Yorkshire Probation Services, and last but not least Patrick and his dedicated team from Hollybush Farm.

HORSFORTH MUSEUM AND LOCAL LINKS WITH KIRKSTALL ABBEY Horsforth has been referred to as the largest village in England, although now officially part of Leeds it still retains some of its village character and identity.

Horsforth Museum situated on the Green, aims to reflect this heritage. Exhibits include artefacts household objects and curiosities of interest and educational value. These reflect life and social history, in and around Horsforth. The museum was opened to the public in 1988, admission is free. The curator, Ron Hartley works on a voluntary basis. He is always willing to answer questions and greet new and regular visitors alike.

The premises, which are being further improved have previously seen service as; a vicarage, doctor's surgery, and council offices. Across the road lies ample car parking and Hall Park.

Research facilities are available and visits are particularly welcome from school parties.

Such visits can be arranged out of normal opening hours by arrangement.

Our reporter was surprised to see an old heavy timber door which previously graced the cloisters of Kirkstall Abbey. Although it bears the date 1152, it is not original. This door which had fallen victim to the ravages of woodworm, rot and vandalism was a replica of the original door. lt was commissioned by Leeds corporation when the abbey was given to the people of Leeds by Colonel North. lt was produced by a Horsforth carpenter some hundred years ago. lt had for some years lay in storage at Abbey House Museum Kirkstall.

HORSFORTH UNKS WITH KIRKSTALL ABBEY The first major changes in the area occurred when Alexander, journeying from Barnoldswick, chose the first available site for a monastery after passing through Horsforth. When the abbey was founded by Henry de Lacy, the land at Horsforth had changed hands and most of it belonged to William de Leathly and Nigel de Horsforth. The parishes of Guiseley and Otley gave gifts to the abbey.

Horsforth gave wood and stone for the abbey's construction. A contemporary extract from the 'Monastican Anglican, Horseford' states that; Adam Fitz- Peter gave all the land he had in Nordecrofts in this territory with common pastures there and all necessary wood for building etc.

Nigel de Horsforth gave land here to make a foss or ditch. His son Waiter gave certain oxgangs of land in this territory with John Wylkes his villaine and all his family and cattle.

He also gave six acres in forthagha, one acre in threperode and two lofts that Sutherick the widow held.

Thanks to these and numerous other contributions, the monks of Kirkstall became great land owners.

Kirkstall Abbey received more gifts of land, cattle, etc. during the 13th and 14th century.

The monks acquired all the land in Horsforth, and by a charter of Henry iii, they had 'free warren' there.

HORSFORTH, THE DOMESDAY BOOK AND BEYOND lt can be seen from entries in the Domesday Book, 1086 the village was listed as Horseforde.

From this name we can see that the settlement was established at a shallow crossing point on the River Aire. lt is thought that this crossing point was at Newlay.

Horsforth was swallowed up by Leeds in 1974, under local government reorganisation. Some old Horsforth signs have survived.which show the old coat of arms of a horse crossing a ford.

Observant visitors to Horsforth will notice the initials H.U.D.C on street furniture and old gully grates. These are reminders of Horsforth Urban District Council.

Old car tyres make low cost planters for flowers and vegetables.

Also using old car tyres you can grow good crops of potatoes on your patio, or in your back yard.

As the shoots grow add successive tyres, filling with compost or soil by way of 'banking up', thus maximising the crop.

Save wear on your pockets, carry your loose change in a small plastic bank cash bag.

This way you will loose less of your cash down other people's armchairs.
