KAC is bustling with the season.

Time for being with loved ones, connecting through activities, and getting ready for what’s ahead. I just love this time for community and spirit-building! Whether you are new to KAC, or a long-time art student, there are so many ways for you and your loved ones to engage with us: Holiday Art Market: KAC’s Holiday Art Market (December 6 - 23) features local artists’ creations: ceramics, jewelry, cards, paintings, and more. At weekend events, kids can create their own unique gifts while you shop, listen to local musicians, and have a warm cup o’ Joe. Proceeds go directly to artists and to support the KAC Gallery.

Winter Quarter: Winter Quarter begins just after the New Year on January 2. If embracing your creative side is part of your New Year’s resolution, consider enrolling in one of our 60+ classes. Local artist Michael Dickter joins the abstract teaching faculty — you can learn more about him on page 9.

Children and teens learn foundational and creative art skills in a friendly and encouraging environment from inspirational teachers. Classes are timed to work with school schedules and supplies are provided for most youth classes. We offer drawing, painting, ceramics, and more for youth ages 2-18.

BEGINNING & INTERMEDIATE CLAY

Work is glaze fired at Cone 05 oxidation or Cone 10 reduction. We have a soda and raku kiln, plus pit and obvara firings. Instructors work closely with students on form, design, and technique.

HANDBUILDING AND SURFACE DESIGN

KAC’s Ceramics program offers weekly classes on making, decorating, glazing, and firing functional and sculptural ceramics with over 20 hours per week of open studio time.

Michael Dickter has studied art at the Arts Student League in New York, the School of Visual Concepts and the State University of New York at Cortland. His work is shown nationally and locally and is in many public and private collections. He is represented in Washington by Waterworks Gallery in Friday Harbor, and Zinc Art + Object in Edmonds.

WHAT GETS YOU UP IN THE MORNING? My dog does. Every morning. Usually earlier than I’d like. But I am usually excited by the day. There are always things to do in the studio. Marks to be made, questions to be asked.

WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH ARTISTS OF ANY AGE AND WITH ANY LEVEL OF EXPERTISE? There are two things I think are critical. First is to develop a daily practice. This is so important. And it is true whether you are a painter, writer, dancer, or musician.

Jasper Johns said, “Do something, do something to that, and then do something to that.” Do that every day..

Second is to always ask questions.

Ask questions of how to do a thing, why do a thing. How do I get this to work? In the long run asking a question is more important than finding the answer, since the answer will lead to more questions. And so it goes.

• By Phone: Call our Education Department at (425) 822-7161 x181 from 9 AM–5 PM, Monday–Friday.

• In Person: Visit our Education Department during business hours. Located on the third floor.

• By Mail: Complete the Registration Form on the last page and send to us with payment made out to KAC. • Once registered, you will receive an email confirmation with any supply lists or course notes attached as a PDF.

CANCELLATION POLICY • Withdrawals ten (10) or more days prior to the first day of class: full refund less a $20 withdrawal fee.

• Withdrawals nine (9) days or fewer before the first day of class: 60% credit towards another class in the form of a gift certificate which must be used within one (1) year of the withdrawal.

• Withdrawals the first day of class and thereafter: no credits and no refunds.

• Class cancellation due to not reaching minimum enrollment: students will receive a full refund.
