Anti-totalitarian Discourse in “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” by Bertolt Brecht and “Kvarkvare Tutaberi”

Abstract: The paper deals with the phenomenon of the rise of the dictator starting from nowhere and achieving great power and success through the vicious and dishonest way. We are analyzing the presented problem through two plays: Bertolt Brecht’s political satire “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” and comedy “Kvarkvare Tutaberi” by Polikarpe Kakabadze. The first play was written to mock Hitler and attack the society that did not stop him. As for the other one, Georgian playwright wrote an anti-socialist play in order to criticize in a playful manner the Soviet regime and especially those individuals, who took an advantage of the existing situation and rose to power. In both cases, we discovered quite a few similarities between the plays as well as anti-heroes.

However, there are significant differences that present the major messages of the playwrights. Our goal is to identify both cases and study them in comparative typological analysis and answer the following questions: in which surroundings are dictators born? What are the main methods they apply to dominate the society? What is the role and responsibility of the society in their rise? Are such leaders extinct or are there still any chances of their rise?

1. Introduction The rise of leaders has always been a very interesting phenomenon not only from the political and historical perspective but also in terms of sociology, psychology, culture, and literature. Especially, if he turns into a tyrant as soon as taking over control. The objects of our study are such leaders and their transformation, rise to power. The paper deals with Bertolt Brecht’s (1873-1907), German dramatist, poet and director, play “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” in comparative analysis of Polikarpe Kakabadze’s (1893-1972), Georgian playwright, play titled “Kvarkvare Tutaberi”, which was staged by Robert Sturua, Georgian theatre director, based on the Brechtian concept of a theatre. We consider the two plays presented in the work are unique as their authors independently created in absolutely two different environments such a psycho-type in dramaturgy and literature that can always

The problem of medrove (“Medrove” is a Georgian word which in English may sound as a “temporizer”, an “opportunist”, a “trimmer” (multitran.ru) and means a person adapting to any socio-political environment for his better material well-being, privileges, and power (M.M.)) that the authors presented to the reader through the political satires will be actual forever. Furthermore, not only does the Georgian writer set the problem of the society through his play but he also emphasized the problem of nationality, which might eventually lead to the demoralization and destruction of the nation. As for “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui”, a history farce written in 1941 by Bertolt Brecht, an exiled writer, it turns German history into an American gangster melodrama, echoing Charli Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator” and referring to Shakespeare’s “Richard III” and “Macbeth”. Besides this, all the personages in Arturo Ui had their direct counterparts in real life, with the main character Ui representing Hitler. It is also noteworthy that Brecht made a big attempt to develop a new approach to the theatre: this is anti-mimetic theatre, a stage is only a stage and actors are just doing their job that spectators should never forget but judge and be able to communicate his version of the truth. As for the Brecht’s version of an anti-totalitarian discourse, as the writer said himself, “the play is not so much an attack on Hitler, but rather upon the complacency of the people who were able to resist him, but didn’t.” Last but not least, we believe totalitarian regimes can be established not only by an external force (as it was the case of Georgia – Russian Bolsheviks occupying it and making into a Soviet republic) but also an internal force like Nazi authority can create it through a monstrous system and make its nation live in a nightmare. In any case, “Kvarkvarism” and “Uiism”, which are almost identical concepts meaning an opportunist, can be born in any country under totalitarian regimes and bring an enormous threat to the society and the national identity. Thus, the aim of our paper is to study what are the similarities and differences of such leaders, who are “offspring” of two different totalitarian systems as well as what reasons stipulate this.

2. “Kvarkvare Tutaberi” and Polikarpe Kakabadze Polikarpe Kakabadze (1893-1972) was a prominent Georgian playwright, who had to create his plays during the Soviet Union Regime, one of which, “Kvarkvare Tutaberi” (written in 1928) was the best creation of the Georgian Soviet Union comediography, which can be referred as a political satire against Bolshevism itself. The play has never lost its urgency despite different époques in Georgia as the protagonist dubbed as “Natsarqeqia” (Natsarkekia is the name of a famous Georgian folktale hero. The name is literally translated as “someone poking in the ashes”. Although physically Natsarkekia is rather weak and lazy, finally he defeats Devis (giants) with his slyness, sends them out of their own house and takes over their property _ M. M.) is a classical image of a person adapting to any sociopolitical conditions in order to gain power and achieve success. Kvarkvare has every characteristic that develops in certain individuals in totalitarian regimes. Indeed, in such a violent and authoritarian order when the concept of a human freedom is eliminated in every 8

Anti-totalitarian Discourse in “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” by Bertolt Brecht and “Kvarkvare Tutaberi” by Polikarpe Kakabadze in Comparative Analysis Medea (Dea) Muskhelishvili sense and it is very hard, a real bravery to succeed in an honest way; in the regime where a fear-factor prevails, it is more likely that such negative traits as laziness, cowardice, greediness, hypocrisy, immorality, trying to achieve a good material condition in a mean and sometimes inhuman manner will start developing in certain individuals. Hence, the main character of the play, Kvarkvare Tutaberi owns all these traits. Moreover, his plan is clear at the very beginning of the play: he dreams to build a railway station that will reach the destination directly through a tunnel rather than going past the mountain. At first glance, nothing is wrong with this plan yet the reader can clearly see the real nature of Kvarkvare – a person willing to achieve success without overcoming obstacles. Indeed, just by a struck of luck and absolutely by chance Kvarkvare appears in a very favorable situation, which he did not plan at all. So, the protagonist takes advantage of the existing chaos in the country and presents himself as a great revolutionary of Bolshevism, giving all the credits of achievements and deeds of others to himself. After this the anti-hero only follows the flow of luck and chance, taking every opportunity without neither deeply realizing the situation and consequences, nor striving hard and wisely to keep his sudden success and powerful condition. Very soon Kvarkvare becomes the leader of the people, a very ruthless, merciless dictator, intimidating and insulting his people and thinking just about his material wellbeing. His rising soon reaches the climax: once a lazy, miserable Natsarkekia goes through an astonishing metamorphosis and the reader is about to believe that his cruelty and mercilessness has no limits as the monster of the Bolshevism reaches the peak of brutality and starts imprisoning innocent peasants into the basement in order to severely punish them.

However, the success achieved in this manner always has its end – destiny is inevitable.

Soon the truth is revealed and the picaresque personage loses all his power and privileges.

Interestingly, as soon as the luck and fortuitous circumstances do not help him/do not “play” in his favor anymore, the picaresque personage loses control over the situation and goes back from where he has started. Indeed, this is really interesting and amazing how masterfully the author of the play is sculpturing his character from a week, miserable person to a powerful, privileged, over-ambitious monster, finally drawing him back to where he has started – a loser poking in the ashes. This way he showed the reader that Kvarkvarism, which in Georgian language and culture became an identical term for medrove, opportunist that is the innate disease and ugliness of totalitarianism, only can spread like an epidemic in such a regime and stops existing as soon as such kind of system ends. The author would boldly speak out and criticize the existing order through his personages and the play, stating: “Socialists consider the only truth what they speak”; “People are enemies to themselves, if you do not shepherd them, they will fall into the ravine like brainless herds… If you are crafty enough and take the opportunity, they will give you the stick themselves but you should strike is in a clever way”; “The proletariat does not need a man with a weak heart, does it?! Now tell me, please, do you want the proletariat to be bothered?”

2.1 “Kvarkvare” on the Stage – Beginning of the Antimimetic Theatre in Georgia

The 1st Annual Lecture on Exile in Comparative Literature and the Arts ALECLA 2018, 5-8 July, Constanta, Romania As we have already mentioned, “Kvarkvare Tutaberi” was written during the Soviet Union regime and its author took a great risk, especially, after the play was staged in 1929 by Kote Marjanishvili, notable Georgian theatre director, a year after it had been written. As Manana Kakabadze, the daughter of the author recalls in her interview, a lot of people came to the premiere of the play, including all Soviet Central Committee, Communist officials and Lavrenti Beria, chief of the Soviet Security. Surprisingly, they became the “victims” of a wonderful comedy and could not help laughing boisterously during the play, calling one another “Kvarkvare” in jest (or maybe they really meant that as “Kvarkvare” was the exact embodiment of all of them). “Kvarkvare Tutaberi” became the favorite play of Beria too, he used to often attend the play in his theatre box, laugh and call his enemies “Kvarkvares”.

Despite this, Polikarpe Kakabadze was in a big danger because of an open irony and boldness of his play, revealing a true nature of the Bolshevism. Many times was he interrogated for different reasons but surprisingly he survived even during the repressions of the 1930s and continued writing – Stalin could never make a decision to execute him. In Dr. Manana Kakabadze’s opinion, it was “Kvarkvare” that in fact saved Polikarpe Kakabadze from the executors of the regime. Indeed, the Georgian playwright, like Brecht, made the reader feel responsible for not only an improper behavior, existing unfavorable situation and environment but he also forced the reader to face it and feel responsible for the history, society and the universe itself.

2.2 The Birth of Antimimetic Theater in Georgia In 1974 Robert Sturua, prominent Georgian theatre director, after a several-year thinking and planning, finally decided to stage “Kvarkvare Tutaberi” in the Rustaveli National Theatre. (Later he staged Brecht’s “Caucasus Chalk Circle”, which is included in the list of the 100 best-staged plays of the XX century). Unfortunately, the video-recording of the play was destroyed in the Soviet period and we can only do its research based on the study of the theatre critics, interviews and fragments of the theatre. “Kvarkvare” can be considered as a first play that is called a “Robert Sturua Theatre”. Before the director started working on the play, he had already discovered the Brechtian stylistics in “Kvarkvare”, as he noted in the interview. Sturua followed the method of the anti-mimetic theatre while staging the play. He connected Kvarkvare’s life to Christ’s devotion and he did it in the most ironical manner – he drew a parallel to Christ’s life and showed the audience Anti-Christ through this parallel.

This way he managed to “explode” the play, to generalize it and give it a cosmic level/dimension. After the prologue, the actors dressed like circus clowns announced to the audience that the company would present a play about the passions of Christ. The scenography stylistically responded to the intentionally eclectic nature of the play: there were drawing fragments and real objects gathered in the yard of the destroyed church, which actually had nothing in common, no logical connection. In the middle of the stage, there was a huge wooden cross there – a gallows for Christ-Kvarkvare. Sturua presented a new montage of the different plays of Kakabadze: he applied other protagonists and quotations from Kakabadze’s plays, where variation images of Kvarkvare are demonstrated. Besides 10

Ramaz Chikvadze, who played the role of Kvarkvare, displays an amazing transformation of the personage from Christ to Anti-Christ as well as demonstrates his attitude towards his character, Kvarkvare. It is worth mentioning that before the premiere of the play, the actors had had to act 11 times in front of the Central Committee. Fortunately, the audience was finally able to see the play, yet with minor changes due to the Regime.

2.3 The Final of the Play The final of the play is also very interesting and intriguing: following the law of nature and universe, the power gained in a dishonest and tricky way always ends or should be ended.

Polikarpe Kakabadze considered this fact and decided not to falsify the history but stop the dictator from further cruelty. However, the author does not punish the tyrant after his true face is revealed but lets him go free as the society considers such persons are not dangerous but fools, the very epithet the actors call Kvarkvare in the end and send him off the stage with this nickname. So, the main person responsible for all this chaos and brutality is not punished for his crimes but just left without all the guises he applied for his rise. Thus, the final of the play indicates that the “illness” called Kvarkvarism, as in Georgia people call is not eradicated at the end of the play and as soon as he is given a new chance, Kvarkvare will take advantage of the favorable situation and rise to power again. That’s why it can be inferred that the play does not have a happy end as some of the scholars argue. Sadly, the society never believes how dangerous Kvarkvares can be for them but just dub them as a “fool”. And what’s Kvarkvare’s response to this? He refers to himself: “Do not get discouraged, Kvarkvare. Died the one, who crept into the hole ashamed, but me, I will creep up” (Kakabadze, 1936, p. 146).

3. “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” by Bertolt Brecht. Brief Introduction Brecht was born in 1898 in the city of Augsburg, Germany, and grew in the world where war and fascism dominated. Brecht was very interested in Marxism and Piscator. As he was in Hitler's "blacklist" because of his work that did not support the fascist spirit, he had to leave the country and emigrate to Europe. From the very beginning, Brecht decided to revolutionize the theater, relying on the idea that the theater should not only entertain the audience but also teach. The German playwright made the audience face a spectacular challenge of the development of epic, didactic and dialectical theater. Brecht wrote more than 50 theatre and television plays. He died in Berlin in 1956.

The German playwright, who lived in a real nightmare in a Nazi Germany, fled the country the night of Reichstag Fire, in 1933,

The 1st Annual Lecture on Exile in Comparative Literature and the Arts ALECLA 2018, 5-8 July, Constanta, Romania “with the inspiration of writing a play depicting the rise to power of vicious and violent leaders incarnated either by kings such as Richard III or by dictators, statesmen, politicians such as Hitler. Brecht’s real purpose is to destroy the romantic view on history and together with it the aura of importance surrounding the type of characters we have just mentioned” (PALIŢĂ, 2013, p. 43).

In fact, the writer intended to stage his play in the States, as he believed the German audience was not yet ready to face the Nazi leader being demonstrated in the ironical context. Brecht wrote about his play: “Ui is a parable play, written with the aim of destroying a dangerous respect commonly felt for great killers...Plain everyday logic must never let itself be overawed once it goes strolling among the centuries; whatever applies to small situations must be made to apply to big ones too. The petty rogue whom the rulers permit to become a rogue on the grand scale can occupy a special position in roguery, but not in our attitude to history...If the collapse of Hitler’s enterprises is no evidence that he was a half-wit, neither is their scope any guarantee that he was a great man” (Willett and Manheim, 1981, p. 109).

Brecht finished working on "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui" in Finland and took it to America hoping that it would have been very much appreciated. However, things did not go as he expected: he could not establish in America and succeed. So, the play was not staged for its initial target-audience as the German playwright had planned but in 1960 it was Berliner Ensemble that performed the play.

3.1 Epic Theatre and “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” The specific feature of the Brechtian Theater is an epic style that is radically different from traditional, so-called Aristotelian theater. Unlike the latter, the epic theater emphasizes the rationalism of the audience, which implies observation, analysis, argumentation, objectivity rather than its sensibility, assumptions, subjectivity. In this case, the person is ruled by the ability of thinking, which is flexible, obeying the changes of life, unlike the ones determined by destiny, which accordingly is insurmountable. Brecht believed that the theater is the very place where viewers can approach the problems critically, search for solutions and act effectively. He believed that the audience members should have a sense of social responsibility: "For Brecht, the audience is an essential part of the work; the work is open and unfinished . . . and calls on productive capacities of the audience" (Wright, 1989, p. 75).

In order to prevent the audience from being indulged in deep emotions at the theatre, Brecht developed a method through which he could distance the audience and the play: its main method was to use the epic theater and verfremdungseffekte or V-effekt (loosely translated as the effect of alienation and distillation). Willett explains the shortness of the translation for the term in his book, Theatre of Bertolt Brecht: A Study from Eight Aspects as follows:

It is a matter of detachment, of reorientation: exactly what Shelley meant when he wrote that poetry ‘makes familiar objects to be as if they were not familiar’, or Schopenhauer when he claimed that art must show “common objects of experience in a light that is at once clear and unfamiliar”. The value of this conception for Brecht was that it offered a new way of judging and explaining those means of achieving critical detachment which he had hitherto called ‘epic’. (Willet, 1959, p. 177).

The actors of the epic theater were only supposed to demonstrate rather than “becoming” the personages. They were also allowed to show their attitude towards the character and situation (Gestus) too. Brecht's subversion of the G-werk's treatment of dialogue is also significant. Traditionally dialogue is considered the raison d'etre of drama. It is through the dialogues that the theatrical narrative is built up. Brecht was aware of the use of dialogue in propping up a preconceived reality. Therefore, through a variety of disjunctive techniques in the structuring of the dialogues he tried to abandon the narrative in favor of discourse.

Elizabeth Wright notes: "Wherever Brecht used dialogue he used it in a critical subversive way, showing that the speaker's voice did not originate in a pure and pristine selfhood, but was the effect of an intersection of many codes"(Wright, 1989, p. 114).

As we have already noted, the play "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui" is an epic genre play, which is expressed in many ways of this type of theater. The action takes place in Chicago where basically only corrupt cauliflower businessmen and gangsters are presented. There is no positive character in the play but the world of criminals in order to create an exotic fantasy world and thus to distance the audience from the characters. There are quite a few methods of epic theater applied in the play: the play begins with a prologue where the announcer appeals to the audience with an opening sentence attempting to exclude them from the play. Almost all the characters in the play have their own historical counterparts (politician, military personnel, etc.), and each act refers to historical, real events. Moreover, at the end of each act, the author provides the reader with a note through which he explains to him which historical event the act echoes. After that, the presenter will introduce the characters to the audience giving it a brief description of each of them, mostly negative.

Finally, he introduces the main anti-hero to the reader so that Brecht blames the society for his existence as this happened due to the weakness and stupidity of the society. The author through this method tries to make the reader feel guilty and self-critical – they are not just outsiders but direct participants, actors of the events taking place here: “And lastly Public Enemy Number One Arturo Ui. Now you’ll see

3.2 Arturo Ui’s Psycho-type It is very interesting that, unlike the Georgian play, where the protagonist appears in the play pompously, Brecht leads in his anti-hero very unhurriedly, with great caution. Ui does not transform so swiftly into a leader as it is shown in the Georgian play but rather gradually and splendidly. The author makes the appearance of Ui for the first time only on page 10, and he does it very minimally, almost unnoticeably _ it is difficult to believe that he is the main character. Brecht describes Ui with the only sentence: “He’s smelled the stink and thinks he sees the opening”. (Brecht, 1941, p. 10) In German play as well as in Georgian, such human values as loyalty, honesty, friendship are absolutely degraded. However, unlike Georgian personage, who is rather crude and ruthless, Ui is quite gallant at one glance, patient and smart: he does not directly threatens the victim but first educates him how to take the “right” decision. Indeed, the entire play is built on the concealed threat, whose representation is not brutal but paradoxically polite: “Ui: That’s how people talk to me.

It was the same with Dullfeet. He mistook My warm, my open-hearted offer of friendship for calculation and my generosity For weakness. How, alas, did he requite My friendly words? with stony silence. Silence Was his reply when what I hoped for Was joyful appreciation. Oh, how I longed to Hear him respond to my persistent, my Well-nigh humiliating pleas for friendship, or At least for a little understanding, with Some sign of human warmth. I longed in vain.

My only reward was grim contempt. And even The promise to keep silent that he gave me So sullenly and God know grudgingly Was broken on the first occasion. Where I ask you is this silence that he promised So fervently? New horror stories are being 14

But I warn you: Don’t go too far, for even my proverbial Has got its breaking point.” (Brecht, 1941, p. 109) There are many dialogues like this in the play, which contain the messages of hidden violence and menace, and, eventually, an object who is harassed, and who is absolutely aware of this, surrenders as there is no other way. In the Georgian play, there are no such tactics applied by the abuser - violence is obvious, which is more direct and brutal there.

This is very interesting that at first glance Ui does not appear in the play as a monstrous figure but he seems very cautious, persuasive, sensible and patient, tactful and tactical, good planner and manager, a great decision-maker. Moreover, Ui’s manner of talking is always grandiose and careful, almost never applying the hate speech. He is not directly represented in the text as an aggressor, a brutal attacker as Georgian protagonist is. However, it is surprising that the greatest monster ruthlessly kills anyone preventing him to achieve his goal, which is clearly presented throughout the whole play. Ui, who will soon become a big leader, or rather the tyrant, criticizes the city itself and accuses it of having no memory, therefore, it cannot live long as everything is forgotten too soon here. Furthermore, the author often speaks through the characters that morale and honesty fall in the crisis and the weak will always die, and the one “who holds the purse strings holds the power”. The Nazi leader is very different from the Georgian socialist protagonist, who does not actually create or achieve anything by himself, his "success" in each case is not achieved due to his merit, but rather because of the favorable situation, luck, chance, and coincidence. Ui’s attitude towards work is also very interesting: he takes his time to start "revolt" but is waiting for the right moment to come to the broader stage not as an offender but as a savior; who takes revenge not for personal interests but for the people. Such attitude is not at all surprising as the morality of Ui is as follows: "It's not the beginning but the beginning of the end." He is waiting patiently when the victims of the existing unfair situation will come to him and ask for help. Only after this will he take radical measures to take "revenge" on behalf of the oppressed people. But in fact, he will carry out his original brutal plan.

3.3 Resistible Rise Brecht presents Ui's rise to power as being controlled by human forces of abuse and dupery, and therefore "resistible". However, the process of the transformation into the tyrant, the metamorphosis of the gangster into the leader of people is presented in a very interesting manner by the founder of the epic theater: Ui is getting ready as a great politician and is diligently working on his public image, i.e. how to walk, how to sit and how to speak publicly. A former gangster goes through a complete transformation in both external and internal manner. It is important to once again note that there is no such a thing in the Georgian play: even though the character is transformed from the “digger of the ashes” to 15

The 1st Annual Lecture on Exile in Comparative Literature and the Arts ALECLA 2018, 5-8 July, Constanta, Romania the leader, the great revolutionary, he does not change on the level of the personality, mind and intellect but remains the same stupid specimen _ that's exactly the very epithet with which the actors send Kvarkvare off the stage at the end of the play.

Thus, the former illiterate gangster soon becomes an amazing orator and holds public speeches for "little people" that is his “target audience” as his goal was “to master the owner of a small man, patron”. Again, there was no rhetoric in the case of Georgian anti-hero, he directly started violent acts as he was only lead by his brutal instincts. Ui masters sophistry and he very wisely drags people into the cruelty that he had started, especially, after giving a speech about belief, peace and the sacrifice made for this, as well as about success, violence, and chaos and blamed the society for the lack of belief: "You have lost faith, where there is no faith everything is lost ". It is very interesting what is the attitude of the society towards this injustice. Although they quite well understand that “this plague will sweep the country” and call on for a fight and rise against Ui to stop his ruthless leadership, no one wants to take the first step against injustice: “Why us? We wash our hands in innocence”. (Brecht, 1941, p. 95) The final of the play is also very interesting: “free” elections are held and people choose their leader “by themselves” as the gangster partners of Ui declare: “Each man is free to do exactly as he pleases” (Brecht, 1941, p. 97). In this case too all standards of just elections are preserved at first glance: the monster leader insists that the city has to choose him in full freedom, without any grudging, and his gangster partners convince people that they are free in their choice, which is very cynical because there is no choice in fact. And as soon as the society believes in having a free will and one of them leaves the hall in protest as he does not want to participate in fake elections, Ui's people kill him just as soon as he leaves the hall so that others can hear the shooting, a sign of threat and remain silent under terror.

Thus, the society chooses the dictator as they have no other way. On the other hand, the author is presenting this situation as if people had another alternative but did not try hard to change the situation. Indeed, Brecht’s intention is to make the reader/audience feel guilty: he blames people for the rise of Hitler and other tyrants like him - they are people's favorites!

In fact, this is the main message Brecht wanted to communicate through his play: “The play is not so much an attack on Hitler, but rather upon the complacency of the people who were able to resist him, but didn't."

4. Conclusion In general, both plays present a human’s rise to power in a violent and unjust manner.

However, there is an obvious and substantive difference between the anti-heroes. What is more, Brecht presents the process of evolution/transformation not in a pompous way like the Georgian playwright did this.

Anti-totalitarian Discourse in “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” by Bertolt Brecht and “Kvarkvare Tutaberi” by Polikarpe Kakabadze in Comparative Analysis Medea (Dea) Muskhelishvili The finals of the plays are also very interesting: in the case of the Georgian play, the story ends with the inevitability of fate – undeserved success gained through violence always ends or should be ended. Thus, Kvarkvare, the evil is defeated at the end of the play and the society wins. Strangely, neither German nor Georgian playwright punishes the anti-hero: in the first case the dictator wins and in the latter, only Kvarkvare’s true face is revealed but the society lets him go unpunished thinking that he is just a fool and cannot do any harm to anymore. We think this attitude is of the central importance in the play – Georgian society could not realize the scales of threat that such a personality type can cause in certain circumstances. So, the final of the play demonstrates that such persons will always exist among us in any type of totalitarian system, due to our ignorance. As for Brecht, instead of ending the play with the fall of the vicious leader, in the epilogue Brecht begins to debate with the reader about how to stop the rise of such a person in the future: „Therefore learn how to see and not to gape.

To act instead of talking all day long.

The world was almost won by such an ape!

The nations put him where his kind belong.

But don’t rejoice too soon at your escape – The womb he crawled from still is going strong.”

So, it is quite clear that Bertolt Brecht and Polikarpe Kakabadze invented such an anti-hero in order to confront the society’s ignorance and negligence towards the regime and tyrants.

In both plays, the playwrights stress on the responsibility of the society in the existing situation, the society that often turns a blind eye or avoids to face unfavorable situations in the country. Thus, historically there have always been tyrant leaders, even in the Modern Era. Accordingly, the topic presented in the two political satires have always been urgent.

Although those responsible have been revealed, the question is still unanswered after a longstanding history and experience in this sphere: how can such dictators be stopped from rising?

The Feminist Point of View: A Shifting Breach in the Contemporary Art

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to analyze the ways in which

the feminism has succeeded to bring new perspectives to the aesthetic experience. It is known that the civil rights of women begun to the recognized since the '60s, allowing them to attend art classes and to get involved in the artistic environments. This was not enough for them to gain recognition as artists like their male fellow artists did. One of the problems was the lack of genius (because they are female) and also (but not at last) the way they relate to the art they create or the feminine perspective over the artistic objects. Throughout this paper, I try to identify arguments for and also against these social concepts (or prejudices). Also, we will analyze the way in which female artist relate to the perception of the Body in the Contemporary Art and the impact this perception has on the social and cultural systems in the last decades.

Keywords: feminism; feminist art; contemporary art; gender identity.

Introduction Artist's preoccupation with the representation of the female body has played an important role over time, being a very large theme in artworks. The female body played a passive role in the sense that it was the object reconfigured by the subject, respectively by the artists. The female body was used by the artists as a sign, as a means to represent something else: like beauty, sensibility, wealth, sensuality. The female body was not represented for itself. He stood for something else. Contemporary art appears to us as a response to the traditional ways of artistic reporting to body and corporality.

By bringing patriarchal perspectives under the sign of interrogation, feminism draws attention to the ways in which women's bodies are represented. Women-artist seeks to move the center of interest and transform the female (perceived in the past as passive and malleable) into a subject that stands for itself. Another mutation refers to the reconfiguration of the ways in which individuals relate to their own bodies, to the power relations that are

"Private space", including one's own body, thus becomes a subject of interrogation in relation to power relations that are established between individuals or between individuals and the way in which a given society is formed.

We will analyze the feminism and the impact it has in the contemporary art especially form a philosophical point of view.

1. Content At the present moment, to speak about the feminist aesthetics is to question the nature of the subject or to analyze the ways in which we perceive the subject in terms of artistic objects.

Also, is about analyzing the actual perspectives of women's beauty, i.e. the existence of the need for women's beauty. The need for women to be more beautiful, to put effort and attention to be more beautiful in everyday life is also being questioned. Is also under questioning the reasons why women need to do so. Why women feel the need to be more beautiful, to use tricks to enrich the natural beauty. It is because they do not feel good enough? They really are not enough or is only the idea the society send them: that they are not enough?

The ideal beauty, the female ideal to which the women tend to adhere is, in fact, a masculine one, one that comes from a masculine perspective (as feminism asserts), which leads to a subjugation and a passive positioning of the feminine.

In contemporary art, it is visible that the concept of identity, body identity, the disintegration of the concept of identity as it was previously perceived socially, is becoming increasingly problematic. Contemporary aesthetic experiences no longer focus solely on reporting the subject to ideals, aesthetic categories such as Sublime, Beautiful, Tragic and so on.

Contemporary art draws attention to what is hidden, refused, rejected, outraged, perceived as ugly, grotesque, etc.

The new mutations in art, even if they appear to be seemingly chaotic and destabilizing for the artistic environment, allow new questions to arise about the purpose of art, but also about aesthetic experiences and how do we relate to them.

It is recognized that feminism took the idea of corporeality (together with the concept of the gendered body ) and highlighted the fact that the body (the gendered body also) is a predetermined social/cultural and "imprinted" concept. Feminist authors like Judith Buttler or even Sigmund Freud speak about the perception of the feminine body as a result of the power strategies existing at the society level. The body is not to be seen as a passive instrument, a reference object for a passive female. More than that, the body it can be used also in the opposite directions. By imprinting the body the power scheme that functions in a given society can be modified.

Female artist uses feminine bodies, or even their own, through different and multiple performances. The '70s are the most "prolific" in moving the artist's interest center to the idea of performance and corporality as a "statement" both artistically and politically.

Artist women attack taboos, myths, what is hidden, what is used to create a discrepancy between the woman in the flesh and the bones/woman as it is, and the feminine, iconic ideal to which she must aspire, to which she aspires to adapt, tend to. This tends to create a split, a rupture in the personality of women. They tend to believe that are not enough, they have to change themselves in order to correspond to the social demands.

Because of the feminism, the artistic experience is at present moment a concept in full change and reconfiguration. This is due to the interrogations on the nature of the artistic objects or the eternal feminine ideal body. The search for the ideal woman, the ideal represented by the feminine body, symbolized in various forms through artistic works, put pressure from the social point of view on women and feminine itself.

Artists like Cindy Sherman draw attention to how the body (especially the female body) and its presentation or re-representation under different circumstances is a way to anchor us into stereotypes and cultural prejudices. In the works of Cindy Sherman self-identity is regarded as a fragile, malleable construct, influenced by the juncture between social pre-existing premises and personal intentions or interests.

2. The relation between Body and Identity Considered since antiquity in philosophy (and not only) as a vehicle secondary to the spirit, the body remains, however, an unremitting constant in terms of individual relationships with one's own Self. The representation of one's own body or even of the other bodies in one's own consciousness, influences on how a person perceives and look at himself or herself.

From a psychological perspective, the relationship with own body is one of the basic points around which the human personality is formed. We are referring here to the concept of personality as a whole. It is known that self-identity is not the same thing as personality and the personality has as a core the self-identity.

As far as this analysis is concerned, what interests us is the way the body (represented in the art) can, in one sense or another, imprint on the formation of self-identity or, on the contrary, whether self-identity is formed by reference to the way in which bodies are represented in the art.

We allow ourselves to interpret bodily representations in the artistic field, as long as they have always been subject to canons (modifiable in time). We also refer to the human bodies because they have always been seen in art as a sign and a symbol (symbolism) and stood for something else (ideal, perfection, beauty and so on).

The bodies are built, created with strict observance of certain canons. The bodies (from paintings and sculptures in Antic Greece) tend to be perfect in terms of proportions, they are almost always young, harmonious, We don’t find sculptures or paintings in which the bodies are "non-conforming" to an ideal, i.e. the ideal pursued during that period. The canons, although changing over time, remain canons, and the artistic field remains one of the most important areas in which the representation/attainment, manifestation, expression of the ideal in material form is pursued further.

Regarding the aesthetic theories, Noël Carroll supports the idea that over time art has moved from the imitative model of nature (which we find in Aristotle and Plato writings) to the representative model (in modernity) and it ends (in contemporary art) to a pattern in which neo-representation plays a central role. Throughout all this passage, art undergoes decisive transformations, which is reflected in the artistic „products” but also in the viewer's perspective.

At this point, we are asking ourselves about how does affect the self-identity the perceiving of the represented (or neo-represented) bodies in art? On the one hand, there is the perception of the real model (in flesh and bones) relative to the way it is rendered (pictorial and not only). But, on the other hand, we have the perception (experience) of the viewer/reader/listener. Also, on the other hand, we have the perception/intent/manifestation through an act/artistic object from the artist's perspective. It is appropriate to make this point because each experience is different, including the fact that the artistic "object" is perceived differently even from individual to individual only.

We want to make it clear that we do not question the sensory experience as a way of constituting the empirical (or even more transcendental) ego in the Kantian sense. We are rather interested in the fact that this concept of "self-identity" is presented to us today as a construct that is continuously formed by experiments and exchanges with the environment, which automatically involves the existence of a body that experiences at the level sensory.

The sensory level needs to be taken into consideration when we analyze how an artistic object is perceived. On the other hand, the sensory level is presented to us as just one of the stages of artistic perception. These different stages of artistic perception can impress not only the way an individual relates to himself but also the multitude of objects in the environment. The individual does not stop at perception itself, he is able to give meaning, to give meaning to the objects around him and also to the art objects that he encounters.

We argue that the relationship between body and self-identity is not limited to a certain period of life (such as childhood in particular: 3-7 years) and not only reported at the stage of the Lacanian mirror. The suite of meanings that we give to our own body (or bodies of others) is both a socio-cultural construct and a series of personal "fingerprints" with which

As a matter of fact, the body, as Maurice Merleau-Ponty claims, has a double quality. On the one hand he presents himself as an object (for others) and, on the other hand, as a reality (for the subject), as it clears up Elizabeth Grosz. “ For Merleau-Ponty, although the body is both object (for others) and a lived reality (for the subject), it is never simply object nor simply subject. It is defined by its relations with objects and in turn, defines these objects as such – it is ‟sense-bestowing” and ‟form-giving”, providing a structure, organization, and ground within which objects are to be situated and against which the body-subject is positioned. The body is my being-to-the-world and as such is the instrument by which all information and knowledge are received and meaning is generated. It is through the body that the world of objects appears to me; it is in the virtue of having/being a body that there are objects for me. ” (Grosz, 1994, p.87) The body is defined by the relation with the objects, it defines the relationship with the objects, through it, the being is present and, at the same time, presence in the world. So the body is the "vehicle" through which identity (self) is manifested in the world and also through the body – the identity is crystallized and constantly shaped.

3. The relation between Identity and Aesthetic Experience If self-identity is a construct that is permanently formed (and restructured) by being in contact with the environment, we can also support the fact that aesthetic experiences can also play an equally important role in remodeling it.

As we have seen before, identity is presented to us as part of self, the self-being a more complex construct, with multiple nuances and valences. However, we can nevertheless consider identity as part of ‟the self-experiencing as incarnate and as an identity indifference”. What interests us in this embodied self is precisely that it functions as an open, malleable, constantly changing and restructuring system.

Self and self-identity, as Peter Burke states, are social constructs, they reflect society, are formed by social interactions. A person through social interactions gets to reflect on himself, to look at himself, to become the object of his own reflections. So, understanding how identity is formed is about an overall reflection and the society the individual belongs to. For this analysis, we will mainly refer to the artistic experiences of societies and the ways in which they can impose their self-identity. ‟The self-influences society through the actions of individuals thereby creating groups, organizations, networks, and institutions. And, reciprocally, society influences the self through its shred language and meanings that enable a person to take the role of the other, engage in social interaction, and 24

The latter process of reflexivity constitutes the core of selfhood (McCall &Simmons, 1978; Mead, 1934). Because the self emerges in and is reflective of society, the sociological approach to understanding the self and its parts (identities) means that we must also understand the society in which the self is acting, and keep in mind that the self is always acting in a social context in which other selves exist” (Stets &Burke, 2000) What we consider to have effects on restructuring the self is the virtual space, the gap, the distance between what is represented (neo-representations) in art and the way we look at ourselves. The ‟Ideal”, the imaginary even, the ideational structures that form and materialize through works of art or which are captured in different arts-specific embodiments create a distance between what we are (when we look at a work of art, i.e. when we experiment aesthetically) and what is represented in the artistic object.

Do I find myself or not in what is represented in the art object? Which part (identity) of myself can I find /resonate/identify with what appears in the painting/sculpture? Is this part somehow idealized in a generic way? Which part of me is idealized or idealizing?

As far as the artist is concerned, his questions rather concern his own ability to play and create through his works an ideal or what he sees, he feels, he experiences, and so on. The artwork presents itself as a personal interpretation of what the artist perceives (both in the outside world and in the inner world).

In order to better understand the relationship between identity and artistic experience, we will also use Noël Carroll's analysis presented by the concepts of resemblance and representation of traditional approaches to pictorial representations. In short, if the image of a body in a painting resembles a real person, it does not mean that the person represents that image, that that image is the person in itself. The resemblance is not representation, it is not a sufficient basis for representation. We can say rather that the image functions as a symbol for the real object, in our case, for the body, as it appears to others (and not necessarily as it is).

“But representation is not a symmetrical relation. If a picture of Napoleon resembles Napoleon, it follows that Napoleon resembles his picture, but it does not follow that Napoleon represents his picture. For though resemblance is a symmetrical relation, representation is not. Thus, resemblance cannot serve as a model for representation, since resemblance and representation have different logical structures, the one being symmetrical and the other not. Resemblance cannot be a sufficient condition for representation, because there will be many cases of resemblance –such as the fact that Napoleon resembles his portrait – that will not warrant attributions of representation. It is not the case that if Napoleon resembles his portrait, then Napoleon represents his portrait ” (Carroll, 2001)

The 1st Annual Lecture on Exile in Comparative Literature and the Arts ALECLA 2018, 5-8 July, Constanta, Romania However, the need to “represent” bodies, portraits, static images of real people/characters has existed since ancient times and continues to be a need for the instruments of satisfying it, to improve it over the time. The body represented is not the same as the person itself.

Nevertheless, the need for image/duplication, the look of something that resembles the real person exists.

To get into details, it is necessary to lean towards the psychology of art. On the other hand, for the purposes of the present work, it is sufficient to specify that the need to perceive/visualize/make images of bodies/portraits resembling the original leads us to the need to preserve somewhat unaltered the influence of time on our own body. This can be seen as an attempt to preserve unaltered moments or fragments of one's own life, an attempt to temporize our own body and our own self-image. This attempt can be seen as a way of influencing the way we perceive our own body.

For the spectator, the art works as a catalyst for a dual targeting of the perceiver/artist at art level, says G. V. Loewen (Loewen, 2012, p.97). An aesthetic experience position the one who experiences both into the relationship of “identifying” or “mirroring” at a certain level with what is presented in the work of art, and at the same time, the one who experiences can see himself as being different from what is shown in the work of art.

The construction of self-identity is a process that also includes aesthetically this difference, this void or interrogating space that arises from this oscillation of the two hypostases of the individual.

The concept of “mirroring” to which we refer is not necessarily the one in the Lacanian perspective, but rather the mirroring as a relationship and exchange, interconnection and active presence, implication for the establishment of meanings, differentiation for establishing our own identity structure.

Artists such as Robert Morris and Dan Graham have experienced reflection/reflection effects in their works in the 60’s and 70’s. The idea of reflection or fragmentation, mirroring continues to be a fructified topic in contemporary art. Meanwhile, artists such as Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Olafur Eliasson, and Yayoi Kusama tackle the theme of reflecting the subject in mirror structures, directing the subject of aesthetic experience to internalize through the perception of their own body.

By addressing the theme of reflection, contemporary artists respond, without wanting obviously or willingly, to Jean Baudrilland's criticism of contemporary art. For this, contemporary art has lost its desire for illusion, becoming “trans-aesthetic”. The dissociation of reality, a solid foundation of the existence of art objects is canceled (through cubism, abstractionism or expressions). There must be a mystery (a form of mystery) to stand at the bottom, he says (Baudrillard, 2005, p.25).

Through contemporary art, the mystery is re-allocated to other “areas”, the perspectives moves further, and thus, the center of interest is also transferred. The mystery is not the art object or art delimited openly by framing, but the daily space, the viewer, the one who experiences and finds himself in the position of having an aesthetic experience. The very concept of “aesthetic experience” is changing its definition more and more. Contemporary art allows, not by meaningless destruction, but by remodeling and reconstruction in a new register, access to new forms of mystery, differentiation between registers, to new dichotomies.

The art object no longer appears in contemporary art as a re-presentation of objects as they appear on the outside. The stake is to identify the “spaces” that exist beyond the appearances of objects.

Who is the person/individual/self that experiences? What is the aesthetic experience? Who am I? (eventually).

The very concept of “identity” is questioned through aesthetic experiences in contemporary times and in contemporary art, which allows us to support even the ethical and constructively-educative role of the way in which contemporary artists understand/configure reality through the art objects they bring into the public light.

Indeed, from distance, what is happening in contemporary art is no different from what has happened so far, as stages in the history of art. In fact, all artistic movements have started (in one form or another) to question the existing canons up to a certain point in time, reevaluating, moving the centers of interest, accessing other areas of interest.

4. Conclusions Through a brief analysis of the correlations we established between the concepts we started from (body/identity/feminism) we tried to determine if and how they can reconfigure each other.

The sphere of interdependence between these concepts is open in the sense that the terms can be considered in full remodeling and construction at the present time.

To facilitate the passage is important to be said that we have to take into considerations problems as gender differences. We have to analyze the ways in which these differences are perceived, expressed, conceptualized in contemporary aesthetics. For more precision, we can say that the current feminist aesthetics are much more centered on the idea of bringing into discussion the gender differences and the impact that they may have on the other conceptual constructions so far. In addition, they tend to question the traditional perspectives 27

Another intermediate area that could bring more clarity about the correlation between terms is the language and also what language express, the meaning, the subject, and also the object at the linguistic level. This could be a key for us to determine whether and what is the language of art, its role (as artistic language) in the formation of identity, that goes by addressing gender differences, their integration, and their gradual overcoming.

Mnemonic Portraits and Ghosts in Exile in Three Novels by Vladimir Nabokov Abstract: This paper explores the influence of Nabokov’s exile on his art of portraiture through a comparative study of the novels: Mary (1926), The Gift (1935), and Look at the Harlequins! (1974). The focus of this comparative study is a mnemonic portrait, which is one particular type of literary portrait peculiar to the author. The mnemonic literary portrait is a literary term used for the purpose of a research made on literary portraits in Nabokov’s novels in the context of a PhD doctoral project “Vladimir Nabokov: L’Art du Portrait” and owes its name to the adjective ‘mnemogenic1’ dubbed by the author to define a peculiar type of literary persons or characters which are easy or pleasant to recall of. According to our hypothesis, Nabokov’s quest to find new ways of creating portraits stems from the author’s constant encounters with the ghosts in his memories. At the same time, mnemonic portraits could be the artist’s response to the challenges launched by the Russian avant-garde movement called Suprematism and, more precisely, UNOVIS, the sub branch of the movement that sought to break away from the representations of the past in the context of the October Revolution. For that purpose, we shall refer to philosophers who have theorized the art of portraiture in its visual and not literary form, namely Hervé Guibert, Georges Didi-Huberman, and Jean-Luc Nancy.

1. Introduction Vladimir Nabokov named the pogroms of the twentieth century the “modern atrocity2”, which the others saw in the work of modern artists such as Picasso or Schiele. Our hypothesis is that Nabokov’s first-hand experience of exterminations during the October Revolution triggered this exiled artist’s need to give shape to his living memories of the dead or missing through his literary portraits. This hypothesis is reinforced by the international artistic context of Nabokov’s exile. The 1922 suprematist exhibition in Berlin affirms an internationally new, non-objective conception of modern art in post-revolutionary Russia carried by the Bolshevik Revolution. As Malevich writes in 1919: “We need to be intransigent with the past, and more than ever, bury it in a cemetery. Every resemblance to it has to be wiped from our face3”, Nabokov writes his poem “Remembrance” (1920) and later on “Execution” (1927) in which the author sees himself as a survivor of an imagined execution ending with “the fortunate protection // of my exile I reposses”. The insistence on the visual representation of characters in his literary portraits characterized by the crossfertilization of arts triggers the following questioning. What if Nabokov’s literary portraits were his silent responses to modern art? To Malevich. To Lissetzky. To Nikolai Souietine.

In short, to UNOVIS4. A comparative study of literary portraits from different periods5 of his literary work, Mary6 (1926), The Gift7 (1935), and Look at the Harlequins!8 (1974), will attempt to question the validity of our hypotheses through time by addressing to the above question. Addressing to it will allow us to see that seeing UNOVIS as a movement that breaks with the memory of past times and at the same time leaves the exiled Russians out of

The 1st Annual Lecture on Exile in Comparative Literature and the Arts ALECLA 2018, 5-8 July, Constanta, Romania memory is perhaps necessary to understand Nabokov’s attitude towards abstract art9 and the importance of figurative art in his literary portraits stemming from different historical contexts as testified by De Vries10. At the same time, it will prove that Nabokov’s literary portraits are the vehicles for memory, his own and that of human figures in art history – that they are mnemonic11. This implies that his literary portraits exceed the classical definition of a literary portrait such as given by Pierre Arnaud as a break in a narrative of a varied length with a goal to make a physical description of a character (prosopography) and/or moral aspect of a character be it real or imaginary (ethopoeia)12.

In this paper we intend to provide a study of literary portraits from an art history perspective, which has not been done in two recent broad studies13 dealing with the art of painting in his literary work. Additionally, our analysis will differ from another recent work14 that focalizes on the authorial self-portraits stressing the self-referential and postmodernist aspect of Nabokov’s writing. Our analysis of the hidden meanings in his portraits in the third part will follow the line of research done elsewhere by Brian Boyd15.

Mnemonic Literary Portraits and Ghosts in Exile in Three Novels by Nabokov Ana Bumber In order to answer to the above question we will confront Warburg’s definition of a portrait as a ghost that survives to an after death16 with suprematist theory in Nabokov’s literary portrait. We will start this paper by tackling photography with a focus on the family photographs depicted in Gift as the objective form of expression in contrast to Suprematism, which is characterized by non-objective expression of pure artistic feeling. For this section we will refer to Jean-Luc Nancy’s reflections on the difference between the identification portrait and the art of portraiture, but also on the photograph as a material object, in Le Regard du portrait17. Then, in the second part, we will deal with ghosts in exile. That is to say, portraits stemming from mental images, which compete with photography in Mary in as much as they are capable of conveying the memory of an emotion. The examples from the Look at the Harlequins! and Gift will support our remarks. We will end this part by demonstrating the deliberately spectral quality of minor portraits in the latter novel. We will refer to Guibert’s discrimination between the mental image and photography in L’Image fantôme18 and oppose our findings to suprematist definition of art, which “does not depend on any aesthetic beauty, emotion or state of mind” (Malévitch, p. 28). We will end this paper by the synthesis of Nabokov’s modernist portraits found in all three novels, the portraits composed of references to other works of art, predominantly modernist, gravitating around the Russian avant-garde The World of Art19 movement that preceded UNOVIS. In order to tackle the prominence of art history references in this part, we will refer to Aby Warburg’s notion of phatos as theorized in George Didi-Huberman’s Image survivante: histoire de l’art et le temps des fantômes selon Aby Warburg20.

This paper is written in the context of a broader doctoral research project on the art of portraiture in Nabokov’s fictional work.

2. Family photographs in Gift The use of photography in various narratives under scrutiny seems to be the antithesis to suprematist definition of art that must be “free[d] from the dead weight of objectivity […]”

Photography appears in all three novels in the form of family photographs whose purpose and object are to make the family members immemorial. The photographs appear as the objective representations of those persons “[i]n those photos Mary had been exactly as he remembered her” (Nabokov, Mary, p. 53), “[j]udging by her words and judging also by the photographs of him, he had been a refined, noble, intelligent and kindly man” (Nabokov, Gift, p. 185). The medium, in other words the camera, takes images through the lens - objective in French - and makes that an image itself becomes a personal object, which in the context of exile becomes a precious “photograph unsuitable even for copying, had alone been saved by a miracle and had become priceless” (Nabokov, Gift, p.84). In Gift, photographs of dead young poet Yasha, the snapshots of Fyodor’s missing father, the group photograph with the dead cousin on it - “Fyodor’s cousins: one in a school cap, the other without - the one without to be killed seven years later in the battle of Melitopol” (Nabokov, Gift, p.84) - the snapshot of an unknown actress living in Paris and the photo of Zina’s dead father, feature at least one person, who is either dead or missing, or geographically displaced, and as such fit Nancy’s definition of a portrait as an object to be kept in the absence of a person be it by remoteness or death21.

The family photographs, the products of the camera that Kossi Efoui calls “the memory machine22” create the proofs of one’s existence. Following Aby Warburg’s definition of a portrait, the persons of these photos are to be looked at as the ghosts that survive after death.

They have been immortalized. In the context of the revolution occasioning damnatio memoriae23, the damnation of one’s memory, the choice of including family photographs as ekphrases in a work of art illustrates the process of transsubstantiation of a personal memory to a collective one as one finds in Arshile Gorky’s portrait The Artist and his Mother24 (1926-1936), or Serge Lask’s canvases featuring photographs of family members, who perished during the Holocaust. The family photographs above quoted are not artistic photographs, but true to nature - the saved relics taken out of family albums. They are amateurish: “higher up - Yvonna Ivanovna, who for some reason has not come out, her features blurred but her slim waist, her belt and her watch chain clearly visible” (Nabokov, Gift, p.84). They follow the distinction between an identifying photograph and a work of art

which, according to Nancy, lies in inventiveness . The contrast with Suprematism lies in Malevich’s vision of art: “it is not our job to photograph traces; that is the photographer’s job. Rather than collect any old relics, what is needed is to establish laboratories of global construction, from whose axes will emerge painters of new forms, not dead object-type representations” (Malévitch, p. 56).

3. Ghosts in exile Nabokov’s literary portraits feature two types of literary portraits that we named ghosts in exile. The first type is the mental image, which according to Guibert has ghostlike qualities.

The second type is a portrait of the present that according to Warburg are the ghosts of the future.

3.1. Mental images In contrast to actual photographs, mental images are endowed with what Guibert calls emotional memory26 which photography as an encompassing and forgetful practice cannot convey. This differs from the suprematist vision of art “which does not depend on any aesthetic beauty, emotion or the state of mind” (Malévitch, p. 28). In Mary, Mary’s snapshots are laid aside in order to convey the memory of a first love emotion. “But her image, her presence, the shadow of her memory demanded that in the end he must resurrect her too - and he intentionally thrust away her image, as he wanted to approach it gradually, step by step, just as he had done nine years before” (Nabokov, Mary, p. 33). The description of minute details of her face together with the mobility of her facial expression reveal the aesthetic beauty and list all peculiarities that he found so endearing about her: “her rapid smiling glances […] a strong color in her cheek, the corner of a flashing, Tartar eye, the delicate curve of her nostril alternately stretching and tightening as she laughed” (Nabokov,

Mary is also described as a butterfly and as such endowed with supernatural mythologized features that photographs are not supposed to convey “he saw only the folds of the stuff stretching and rippling across her back, and the black silk bow like two outstretched wings” (Nabokov, Mary, p. 49), “her black bow looking in flight like a huge Camberwell Beauty [a butterfly]” (Nabokov, Mary, p. 61).

In Look at the Harlequins!, the narrator’s mental image of underage Bel is linked with the memory of their past rapture. The narrator says: “[…] she has changed very slightly in the medium of memory, where blood does not course through immobile time as fast as it does in the perceptual present. Especially unaffected by linear growth is my vision of her pertaining to 1953-1955, the three years in which she was totally and uniquely mine” (Nabokov, Look at the Harlequins! p.142).

In Gift, such emotion is intentionally kept at bay in Zina’s portrait. Fyodor’s fighting against his infatuation with Zina is depicted through her portrait in which her image disintegrates into something resembling abstract painting “the automatic repetitions of the disintegrating image to a mere sketch broken and blurred, in which nothing of the original life subsisted” and recomposed every time he meets her again “and beauty again flared forth - her nearness, her frightening accessibility to his gaze, the reconstituted union of all the details” (Nabokov, Gift, p. 175-176).

3.2. Future ghosts Other portraits in Gift remain spectral. The idea of imagining his missing father alive scares Fyodor. Fyodor’s first love appears as an antithesis to Ganine’s first love for she has remained a specter to him.

“In the gloom of the small public garden crossed obliquely by the faint light of a streetlamp, the beautiful girl who for the last eight years had kept refusing to be incarnated (so vivid was the memory of his first love), was sitting on a cinder-grey bench, but when he got closer he saw that only the shadow of the poplar trunk was sitting there” (Nabokov, Gift, p. 51).

Fyodor imagines the dead poet Yasha as a ghost wandering through his father’s apartment.

At the same time, these portraits alternate with short portraits of exiled characters that the protagonist meets in his everyday life. They consist in the short descriptions of characters which seem to encompass the most striking features of these persons “a good-naturedly gloomy Muscovite whose carriage and aspect were somewhat reminiscent of the Napoleon of the island period, and a satirical poet from the Berlin Russian-émigré paper, a frail little man with a kindly wit and a quiet, hoarse voice” (Nabokov, Gift, p. 164). While the mental images in Mary and Gift focus on the absent and endows the characters with ghostlike 36

“These two, like their predecessors, invariably turned up in this region, which they used for leisurely walks, rich in encounters, so that it seemed as if on this German street there had encroached the vagabond phantom of a Russian boulevard, or as if on the contrary a street in Russia, with several natives taking air, swarmed with the pale ghosts of innumerable foreigners flickering among those natives like a familiar and barely noticeable hallucination” (Nabokov, Gift, p. 164).

4. Portraits as traces of The World of Art movement The leading figure of The World of Art movement Serge Diaghilev “played a magisterial role in familiarizing Russians with Western art, from Old Masters to contemporary, as well as with past and future trends in art of their own country” (Shapiro, 2009, p. 98). In all three novels, but in Mary and Look at the Harlequins! especially, there are many references to Old Masters and modern art in painting as well as in literature, but also through allusions to emblematic figures from the world of Theatre. In Mary, the exiled Russians whose literary portraits encode many references to the modern art inhabit the protagonist’s pension. Some portraits are conveyed through poems such as Paul Verlaine’s “Pierrot” (1884) or Vladimir Mayakovski’s “The Cloud in Trousers” (1915). The description of characters resemble the archetypal figures of some painters such as the red-haired prostitutes of Henri de Toulouse Lautrec or Egon Schiele’s nudes and some of his self-portraits. They are direct references to The World of Art movement through ballet dancers, which to the émigré Russian reader of the twenties evoke the roles of Petrouchka by Vaslav Nijnsky and the artistic world formed around the figure of Serge Diaghilev both in Russia and in Diaspora. In all three novels, portraits are conveyed through the specific figurative paintings. Some examples are: The Landlady by Nina Hamnett in Mary, Femme nue allongée by Lautrec, Demon by Vrubel, Lessons on Anatomy by Rembrandt in the Look at the Harlequins! and in the Gift The Descent from the Cross by Rembrandt. In all three novels, the memory of shapes as thought

by Aby Warburg is used to convey pathos that repeats itself through all of history and calls into mind so many paintings at once. Finally, a hint of a detail in a specific portrait, such as “Lilithan eyes” calls to mind the representation of Lilith in art history.

4.1. Poems of Mayakovski and Verlaine and their encoded meanings The reference to the poem “The Cloud in Trousers” (1915) by Mayakowski, found in a truncated form “‘The Trousered Cloud’ “Great big clouded cretin, that’s what I am” (Nabokov, Mary, p. 8), encodes the authorial self-portrait. The poem was written for Maria Denisova, Vladimir Mayakovski’s unrequited love. While this poem does not give us information about the physical appearance of Mary, it informs the reader on the nature of the relation between poet and novelist, both carrying the name of Vladimir, and their loved Maria and Mary. The reference to this poem foreshadows the missed encounters. Ganin will 37

There is to it an autobiographical reference in the line “It happened in Odessa”, the place of the missed encounter for Mayakovski and the place where Tamara’s trace, the supposedly real name of Nabokov’s first love, is lost in the tumult of the October Revolution. Our reading of this encoded autobiographical portrait is in line with Shapiro and Chupin’s interpretations of encoding the authorial presence in his work.

Potyagin’s portrait has as a model the poem “Pierrot” by Paul Verlaine27 (Figure 1.). His portrait matches the physical description of Pierrot’s eyes and carnation. It foreshadows the death of the poet. The “old dying poet” (Nabokov, Mary, p. 116) in the last page of Mary meets up with the final lines of the poem “of the one who dies”.

“In front of him, leaning his head against the wall and gasping for air with his mouth open, stood old Podtyagin, barefoot, wearing a long nightshirt open at his grizzled chest. His eyes, bare and wild without their pince-nez, were unblinking, his face was the color of dry clay, the large mound of his stomach heaved beneath the taut cotton of his nightshirt” (Nabokov, Mary, p. 62).

4.2. Figures of the avant-garde movements in Mary The literary portraits of other lodgers are evocative of the figures in paintings belonging to the avantgarde movements. Frau Dorn’s cook is a red-haired prostitute evoking Toulouse Lautrec’s prostitutes (Figure 2.): “a cook - the terror of the local market, a vast red-haired virago who on Fridays donned a crimson hat and sailed off for the northern quarters where she traded her blowsy charms” (Nabokov, Mary, p.7). The double portrait in the mirror of Ganin and Lyudmila, the portrait of Lyudmila dressing both call Schiele’s portraits (Figure 3.). The portrait of Frau Dorn, whom the narrator refers to as “the landlady” (Nabokov, Mary, p. 7), could also be a reference to the painting (Figure 4.) The Landlady (1918) by the avantgarde woman painter Nina Hamnett belonging to the circle of Diaghilev. The portraits of two dancers, Kolin and Gornotsvetov, echo the real ballet dancers such as Vaslav Nijnsky in the role of Petrouchka (1913), to portraits of Arthur Rimbaud (Figure 5.) and to the portrait drawing of the librettist Boris Kochno (1921) by Sergei Soudeikine (Figure 6.), who also worked with Sergei Diaghilev. These works of art here date from 1872 to 1921, the period which corresponds to the World of Art movement. They could be analysed as the allegories of the artistic world in which the author was immersed at the time when he was in love with Tamara. The reconstruction of this ideal artistic world through literary portraits could be interpreted as the reconstruction of a mindscape necessary to invite Mary back into

Ganin invites her into “the house of ghosts” (Nabokov, Mary, p. 116), as the pension is referred to, which functions as the asylum, the inviolable place, in which characters bear traces of art. “He was a god, re-creating a world that had perished. Gradually he resurrected that world, to please the girl whom he did not dare to place in it until it was absolutely complete” (Nabokov, Mary, p. 33).

4.3. The paintings in Mary, Gift and Look at the Harlequins!

The figure Hamnett paints (Figure 4.) is a landlady sitting at the head of the table while at the same time being in retreat. It seems to correspond in position, expression and color to the reference of a single hand to the following portrait: “Frau Dorn’s prim and sad little back figure looked very out of place and forlorn at the head of the table […]. Like a dry leaf her tiny little hand would flit up to the dangling bell knob and then yellow, and faded would flutter back again” (Mary, p. 13). In Look at the Harlequins! there is a portrait which is even more detailed description of a tableau by Toulouse Lautrec, Femme nue allongée (Figure 7.)

“She was naked, save for her black-stockinged legs (which was strange but at the same time recalled something from a parallel world, for my mind stood astride on two circus horses). In an erotic footnote, I reminded myself for the ten thousandth time to mention somewhere that there is nothing more seductive than a girl’s back with the profiled rise of the haunch accentuated by her lying sidelong, one leg slightly bent” (Nabokov, Look at the Harlequins! p.62).

In the textual environment of this portrait, the author gives clues in his parentheses with “two circus horses” hinting at an another work by Lautrec The Circus Riders, (Figure 8.) and with his remark “which was strange but at the same time recalled something from a parallel world”. This helps us to link this description to Femme nue allongée by Toulouse Lautrec.

4.4. Pathos Pathos28 according to Didi-Huberman’s mise en forme of Aby Warburg’s research embodies a shape, gives to it life and movement, and is at the same time the memory of that shape which resurges through time. Pathosformel29 is a trace in motion of anthropologic images of classical and modern Western Culture from which the suprematists wanted to break away.

The same kind of descriptive figure is present in Gift in Chernychevski’s portraits which resembles Christ’s descent from the cross as depicted by Rembrandt or Annette’s portrait in Look at the Harlequins!

“Annette’s emotional health caused me anxiety: her graceful neck seemed even longer and thinner. An expression of mild melancholy lent a new, unwelcome, beauty to her Botticellian face: its hollowed outline below the zygoma was accentuated by her increasing habit of sucking in her cheeks when hesitative or pensive” (Nabokov, Look at the Harlequins! p. 110).

Phatos in pictorial literary portraits encodes pity for a particular character (see Boyd 1985), which otherwise is never expressed in words. For instance, representing Alfyorov as a religious figure at the beginning of the novel compensates the negative image of Alfyorov depicted by the protagonist.

As we can see, there is an emphasis on the figurative representation in portraits here from which the Suprematists wanted to depart: “Only after the disappearance of the habit whereby consciousness regards paintings as representing small corners of nature, or Madonnas, or immodest Venuses, will we see pictorial work” (Malévich, p.48). In the last example, “Botticellian face”, the most famous of which is precisely an immodest Venus in The Birth of Venus, reaffirms Nabokov’s opposite view regarding art to Malevich and Suprematists.

5. Conclusion This paper answers positively to our initial question and with it confirms that Nabokov’s literary portraits are his silent response to Suprematism. While, on the one hand, Suprematists’ “task is to continue advancing towards something new” (Malévitch, p. 8), Nabokov’s literary portraits are composed of past recollections, photographs, art history figures and of the present portraits that the author sees as ghosts in the anticipation of a future reader of the futures times. “We are not going to live in the museums” (Malévitch, p.

8), Malevich proclaims. As for Nabokov, literary portraits constitute an imaginary museum capable of bringing to life, of a renaissance in Aby Warburg’s sense of this word, the ghosts from the past that belong to his own recollections or to our collective memory of art history figures.

Intercultural Communication in the Romanian Space from Rabindranath Tagore to Ram Krishna Singh Abstract: This paper aims to synthesize the cultural links between India and Romania and to identify the spiritual and archetypal springs of poetry. In the first part, I show the Indian presence in the Romanian cultural awareness, from the folk to the cult literature, following the contribution of Dimitrie Cantemir, which was the first European orientalist, Eminescu, B.P. Haşdeu, George Coşbuc, Mircea Eliade, Lucian Blaga, etc. I also examine the essential contribution to interculturality of the Indian researcher Amita Bhose, known for translating Eminescu and for her work “Rabindranath in Romania”. I devote another part of the paper to Rabindranath Tagore and the haiku of kabitica. I analyze the coincidence of contradictions in his “Fireflies: Pearls of Wisdom”. In the following section, I explore the poetic universe of Ram Krishna Singh referring to his collection “Growing Within" translated into Romanian by Alexandra Flora Munteanu and Taner Murat. Finally, I advocate the establishment of an intercultural university at Tomis based on a Santiniketan concept.

1. India în conştiinţa culturală românească Legăturile noastre cu India sunt mai vechi. România a luat cunoştinţă de literatura indiană prin intermediul culturii bizantine. Cărţile Alexandria, Varlaam şi Ioasaf Sindipa au circulat în perimetrul ţării noastre prin literatura populară India a intrat în sufletul românilor.

Dimitrie Cantemir a fost ,,primul orientalist european” care, explorând mult mai înainte de toţi europenii spaţiul cultural asiatic, a citit Pañchatantra într-o variantă turcă, pe care a evocat-o în Kniga Sistema Pancatantra - Istoria ieroglifică. Dintre indieni, Korosi Sandor Csomi (n. 1784), bibliotecar la Societatea Asiatică Calcutta, este primul tibetolog european.

După Dimitrie Cantemir urmează alţi scriitori români care şi-au arătat interesul pentru India: Eminescu a studiat prin intermediul limbii germane capodoperele culturale indiene Kālidāsa, Rgveda etc. şi a încercat să înveţe ca şi B.P. Haşdeu limba sanscrită. Între contemporanii lui Eminescu - Vasile Burlă, C.G. Georgian – au fost sanskritologi, Georgian fiind primul profesor de sanscrită la Universitatea Bucureşti; I.L. Caragiale scrie textul Nirvana. George Coşbuc a tradus Sakuntala, antologie de poezie sanscrită. Cultura indiană a exercitat o influenţă puternică asupra marilor spirite româneşti. Al-George este cel mai mare orientalist român, Mircea Eliade este întâiul român care merge la studii în India, idee pe care o avusese şi Eminescu. (Nu avem spaţiul necesar pentru a dezvolta subiectul Eliade şi

Lucian Blaga, în Religie şi spirit (Editura Dacia Traiană, Sibiu, 1942), are două capitole intitulate De la Indra la Nirvana şi Tao în care analizează mentalitatea asiatică, filosoful precizând că nu ar trebui să-i judecăm pe cei din Extremul Orient din prisma subiectivismului european. Orientalii au o aforistică a ,,transparenţelor” şi a ,,penumbrelor” care formează un întreg şi ţine loc de sistem european. ,,Aforismele europenilor sunt de obicei pietre de mozaic”, scrie L. Blaga. Cei din Răsărit ştiu să aprecieze clipa, fiindcă ,,momentul este o arătare ciudată a veşniciei”, ,,are caratele eternităţii”, ,,momentul este de astă dată încărcat de o sarcină metafizică”, afirmă creatorul Marelui Anonim. În poeziile sale, autorul din Lancrăm a scris despre veşnicia satului, a geografiei mitice, dar şi despre instantaneul clipei în care simte ,,taina şi rânduiala cosmică de totdeauna”, expresie a tâlcului metafizic al lumii. Filosoful afirma că „prin asimilarea totală, motivele de provenienţă indică au intrat în însăşi fiinţa noastră, de unde ele nu mai pot fi smulse decât distrugând ţesuturi vitale”.30 Blaga aminteşte că Eminescu presimţea ,,o secretă afinitate între fondul dacic şi modul spiritului indic”. ,,Scriind poezia intitulată Rugăciunea unui dac, Eminescu s-a simţit obligat să înzestreze sufletul dacilor cu o concepţie mai adâncă despre existenţă… Am vedea pe Eminescu luând drumul Indiei pentru un an sau doi, atât pentru rotunjirea superbă a personalităţii sale, cât şi pentru ca să uite pe Veronica sa, întocmai cum Goethe a luat-o spre Italia ca să-şi cucerească zenitul”,31 continua Blaga, scriind despre nostalgia noastră indică.

O contribuţie esenţială la cunoaşterea interculturalităţii şi a înţelegerii prezenţei Indiei în conştiinţa culturală românească a avut-o cercetătoarea Amita Bhose (Calcutta, 1933 Bucureşti, 1992). În 1959, împreună cu soţul său, vine în România, înscriindu-se la un curs de limbă şi literatură română, pentru doi ani. Se reîntoarce în India unde debutează în presa indiană cu articolul Rabindranath in România. E începutul unui lung şir de articole, în bengali şi engleză, despre cultura şi literatura română, din care face şi traduceri. în 1965 absolvă Facultatea de Bengali-Engleză la Universitatea din Calcutta, iar în 1971 se înscrie la doctorat, cu o bursă din partea statului român, la Facultatea de Limbă şi Literatură Română din cadrul Universităţii Bucureşti. Din 1971 până la moartea sa va trăi în România, „ţara pe care a iubit-o poate mai mult decât mulţi dintre români şi a slujit-o cu inteligenţa şi condeiul ei" (Zoe Dumitrescu-Buşulenga). În India publică traduceri în bengali din poezia română contemporană, din Sadoveanu, Marin Sorescu, iar piese ale lui I.L. Caragiale, Mihail Sebastian văd lumina rampei. În 1969 apare, în bengali, volumul Eminescu: Kavită (Poezii), prima traducere a lui Eminescu în Asia. Din 1972 i se oferă ţinerea unui curs facultativ de

Din 1978 e angajată lector la Catedra de limbi orientale, predând, numai în română, cursuri practice de sanscrită şi bengali si cursuri teoretice de civilizaţie şi estetică indiană. Redactează un Curs de bengali (1974), urmat de Dicţionarul bengali-român (1985) şi Manualul de bengali (1988), toate trei scrise de mână, cu ajutorul studenţilor săi, tipografiile nedeţinând caractere bengaleze. Amita Bhose are şi o bogată activitate de traducător din bengali în română: Proverbe şi cugetări bengaleze; Povestea prinţului Sobur (basme bengaleze); opere ale lui R. Tagore: Scrisori rupte, Dragostea încurcă, dragostea descurcă, Soarele din prima zi. Stabileşte textul Gramaticii sanscrite mici de Fr. Bopp, tradusă de Eminescu şi rămasă în manuscris, text publicat în 1983 în volumul XIV al Operelor lui Eminescu, editate de Editura Academiei. În 1978, publică la Editura Junimea teza sa de doctorat sub titlul Eminescu şi India, reeditată în 2009 şi 2011 de editura Cununi de stele, înfiinţată special pentru a publica opera Amitei Bhose. Cea care a publicat, în periodice, peste 56 de traduceri din literatura română în bengali şi din bengali în română, peste 90 de articole şi studii şi a susţinut mai mult de 100 de conferinţe şi emisiuni radiofonice şi a acordat peste 20 de interviuri pe teme culturale s-a îndrăgostit de Eminescu prin poezia Ce te legeni, codrule. Din acel moment avea să-1 aşeze pe Eminescu, aşa cum va mărturisi, în inima ei, alături de Rabindranath Tagore. ,,În poezia eminesciană, în poezia română în general, am simţit ecoul acelui dor milenar care adormea în mine.”32 Amita Bhose, primul filolog indian care cunoştea limba română, a fost fascinată de creaţia eminesciană, găsind numeroase asemănări dintre gândirea celor doi mari poeţi ai României şi ai Indiei, Eminescu şi Tagore, ambii fiind influenţaţi de mitologia Indiei. În cuvântul înainte la Eminescu şi India, 1978, Amita Bhose scria: „Prima mea întâlnire cu poezia eminesciană mi-a produs o mare uimire. Descopeream o întreagă lume, în care Orientul se întâlneşte cu Occidentul, Europa se uneşte cu Asia, finitul se «desmărgineşte» şi graniţele se şterg. Poezia lui Eminescu în totalitatea ei, de la oda funebră La mormântul lui Aron Pumnul până la epitaful purificat al poetului, Mai am un singur dor - mi s-a dezvăluit astfel ca o melodie neîntreruptă, îngemănând toate hotarele timpului şi ale spaţiului. O asemenea experienţă am avut numai cu literatura indiană, de la imnurile vedice până la scrierile buddhiste, de la operele lui Kālidāsa până la cântecele vaişnave şi poeziile lui Rabindranath Tagore. De atunci n-am mai putut să-1 consider pe Mihai Eminescu doar un poet european. Pentru mine, Eminescu a fost şi este un kavi (poet-înţelept) indian, un gânditor care priveşte viaţa prin prisma filozofiei… Dar Eminescu e poetul României.

Momentul Eminescu simbolizează întreaga spiritualitate românească. Creaţia eminesciană oglindeşte pe deplin cultura românească... Totuşi Eminescu ar fi putut să fie şi un poet al Indiei.”33 Influenţele buddhiste sunt vizibile în ideile eminesciene: „Moartea succede vieţii,

2. Tagore şi spiritul haiku Amintesc că marele Rabindranath Tagore, supranumit ,,Sufletul Bengalului” și ,,Profetul Indiei moderne”, căruia i s-a decernat premiul Nobel pentru literatură, în 1913, pentru ,,versurile sale profund sensibile, proaspete și frumoase, prin care, cu un meșteșug desăvârșit, a izbutit să facă din gândirea sa poetică, rostită în propriile-i cuvinte englezești, o parte integrantă a literaturii occidentale”, a fost în România, unde a fost uimit de sufletul nobil al poporului nostru. Poetul naţional al Indiei, ultimul descendent al unei străvechi familii de brahmani cu o tradiţie spirituală de o mie de ani, are o notorietate legendară nu numai în spaţiul asiatic, ci şi în cel occidental. Filosoful şi mentorul a înţeles rolul artei atât ca înnobilare a sufletului, cât şi ca punte între culturi, de aceea a creat iniţial o şcoală mică în Bengal, unde şi-a iniţiat discipolii, pe care i-a numit mai târziu apostoli. Maestrul spiritual face parte din aleşii, preoţii poeţi, care credeau în Legile lui Manu, o religie zeităţii supreme, eterne, nemărginite.34 Pornind de la credinţa în acelaşi Creator, acelaşi principiu şi esenţă a lumii, Tagore şi-a propus să creeze legături între continente, să deschidă căile dintre intelectualii mistici şi contemplativi ai Orientului şi dintre cei raţionali şi dinamici ai Occidentului. Tagore a primit o educaţie aleasă atât acasă, cât şi în şcolile în care a învăţat, a studiat Dreptul în Anglia. După ce îşi finalizează studiile, aderă la mișcarea naționalistă indiană, militează pentru cultura şi educaţia indiană, în acest sens, reorganizează Universitatea din Santiniketan, fiind un mediu sinergetic accesibil studenților și celor străini.

El se consacră literaturii scriind versuri şi poeme dramatice, dominate de tema ce-l va obseda toată viaţa: „Bucuria de a atinge Infinitul în sânul Finitului", aşa cum aflăm din „Amintirile" lui Tagore, scrise la vârsta de 50 de ani. În 1884 Rabindranath Tagore se căsătoreşte şi se stabileşte domeniul din Shilaida al tatălui său (pe malurile Gangelui), unde are prilejul de a lua cunoştinţă de condiţiile de viaţă ale ţăranilor bengalez şi de a contribui la ameliorarea lor. Această perioadă, deosebit de rodnică şi pe plan literar, ia sfârşit după vreo 17 ani în mod tragic, deoarece scriitorului îi mor, pe rând, soţia şi doi dintre copii. La vârsta de patruzeci de ani, Tagore întemeiază în satul Bolpur Bengal, într-un loc numit de el „Santiniketan" (Sălaşul păcii), şcoală menită să dea copiilor o educaţie liberă şi armonioasă, în mijlocul naturii; această şcoală avea să devină celebră, sub denumire de „Vişvabhârati" (întreaga Indie).

După debutul ca poet, a scris povestiri, romane, drame și eseuri filosoficopedagogice, operele sale fiind traduse din bengaleză în engleză de autorul însuşi.

Capodoperele poetice sunt „Grădinarul“ sau „Ofranda lirică“ (1913), cea prozastică e romanul „Căminul și lumea“ (1910), iar cea dramatică „Oficiul poștal“ (1912). Ca un adevărat brahman, a mai creat imnuri dedicate divinităţii, eseuri şi cântece cu caracter popular, îndemnând la desăvârşirea lăuntrică, la înţelegerea înţelepciunii şi a rostului contemplaţiei. Profetul afirma că europeanul nu are ,,simţul armoniei universale”, ci este călăuzit de egoism. Citind cartea de eseuri Sadhana (1914)35, cu capitolele: Legătura insului cu universul, Conştiinţa sufletului, Problema răului, Problema eului, Desăvârşirea în iubire, Desăvârşirea în muncă, Realizarea frumuseţii, Realizarea infinitului, putem să reflectăm asupra profunzimilor temelor marelui filosof.

3. Kabitica şi coincidenţa contrariilor ,,Cine eşti tu, cititorule care-mi vei citi poemele, de azi într-o sută de ani. Nu-ţi pot trimite nici măcar o singură floare din belşugul acestei primăveri, nici măcar un singur firicel de aur din bogatele mine ale acestor nori. Deschide-ţi larg uşile şi priveşte afară. Culege din înflorita-ţi grădină înmiresmatele amintiri ale unor flori acum veştede, răsărite în urmă c-un veac. În bucuria inimii tale o vei putea simţi şi pe-aceea care a-nfiorat până la cântec inima unui frate de-al tău, într-o dimineaţă de primăvară, făcîndu-1 să-şi trimită glasul extatic la drum, către tine, cititorul meu de azi într-o sută de ani”, scria Tagore în volumul Grădinarul, îndemnându-ne să împăcăm efemerul cu eternul, să simţim fluxul şi refluxul vieţii, să conştientizăm că în sângele nostru ,,dănţuie-n clipa de faţă pulsaţia vie a veacurilor”. Crengile sunt rădăcini crescute-n văzduh,” sunt alte cugetări din volumul Păsări răzleţe/ Stray Birds.36 Rabindranath Tagore afirma ,,cuvintele sunt lanţuri grele de contrazicere”, idei pe care le aprofundează în haikuurile din cartea Licurici: perle de înţelepciune (trad. Adelina Patrichi, Bucureşti, Editura Taj, 2013). Putem aborda aceste crâmpeie gnomice ca o antiteza ori o „înfrăţire” a contrariilor. Pe coperta volumului, în facsimil, apare un distih din volumul original, scris de poet în engleză şi în bengali: „My fancies are fireflies, -/ Specks of living light/ Twinkling in the dark", haiku din cartea Fireflies, Macmillan, New York, 1928. În prefaţa cărţii Licurici: perle de înţelepciune, Liviu Bordaş scria despre ,,licuricii transcendentali”, despre aceste poemele scurte şi receptarea lor în limba română. Tagore creaseră mai multe volume de versuri în bengali scrise în formă epigramatica şi în tonalitate didactică: Kanika (1899), Lekhan (1927) şi Sphulinga (1946). Poetul a numit aceste mici creaţii lirice kabitica, având un diminutiv al cuvântului poem (kabita). În română, însă termenul „poezioară" are aproape întotdeauna fie un sens peiorativ, fie unul zeflemitor, iar „poem" nu cunoaşte încă un diminutiv acceptabil. Unul dintre cei mai buni cunoscători occidentali ai poetului, William Radice, a propus pentru kabitica expresia „poezii scurte"/ brief poems. (Ion Pillat şi Lucian Blaga scriseseră la noi astfel de ,,poezii mici" sau poeme într-un vers, aforismele lui Blaga din Pietre pentru templul meu se aseamănă mai mult cu procedeul coincidenţei contrariilor lui Tagore, tehnică de accedere în misterele lumii).

Poemele scurte ale lui Tagore sunt legate, aşa cum au arătat exegeţii săi, de tradiţiile epigramatic-didactică sanscrită şi persană care dominau literatura bengali în secolul al XIXlea. Cercetătorii identifică mai multe rădăcini şi filiaţii ale acestor minipoeme gnomice, sapienţiale, cu tonuri contemplative: tradiţia epigramatica şi fabulistică occidentală, Krishna Kripalani a menţionat chiar posibilitatea unei influenţe a poemelor haiku, pe care Tagore le admira. Liviu Bordaş este convins că aceste kabitica traduse de Tagore ori scrise direct în limba engleză în volumele Stray birds (1916) şi Fireflies (1928) ori unele poeme inedite ieşite la lumină în anii '80, se aseamănă cu sutra şi mantra. Versiunile englezeşti ale bengalezelor kabitică au fost publicate sub numele de epigrame, traducerea termenului în română nu acoperă sensul tagorean al scrierilor sale poetice, de o mare profunzime filosofică pentru că pentru români, epigrama se asociază cu formele satirică şi umoristică, în detrimentul celor aforistică şi poetică. În limba română, prin anii '20, erau traduse numai vreo cincizeci de poeme, fie sub titlul Păsări rătăcite, fie ca „gânduri", „maxime" şi „cugetări". Liviu Bordaş ne aminteşte că, după război, şi-a încercat întâi peniţa cu ele Petre

În Basarabia reocupată a apărut un întreg volum de poeme scurte, numite aforisme şi miniaturi poetice, în traducerea poetului Pavel Darie. Acesta cuprinde o selecţie din volumele bengali Kanikā, Lekhan, Sphulihga şi din Stray birds (în română Firicele, Inscripţii, Scântei, Păsări călătoare), după o versiune rusească. Al doilea volum în limba engleză, Licurici, a apărut când Tagore începuse să intre într-un con de umbră, de aceea cartea a fost aproape ignorată în România. Miniaturile poetice din Păsări răzleţe, preluate în Licurici, au fost scrise în 1926, când, după lungul turneu prin Europa, ajuns la Budapesta, poetul a avut nevoie de îngrijiri medicale şi i s-a recomandat să-şi recupereze sănătatea pe malul lacului Balaton. În cele zece zile petrecute acolo, Tagore a scris poemele cu un stylus pe plăci speciale de aluminiu, care au fost trimise apoi unei tipografii din Berlin. Paginile facsimilate au fost legate în piele în Bengal, la începutul anului următor. A fost o ediţie privată, tipărită în regia autorului şi distribuită personal într-un număr limitat de exemplare. În cele două prefeţe, în engleză şi bengali, Tagore leagă scrierea poemelor de călătoriile sale în Japonia (1916-1917) şi China (1924), unde i s-a cerut să dea autografe pe evantaie şi mătăsuri. Totuşi, câteva dintre ele fuseseră deja publicate în 1912. Într-un eseu în care povesteşte cum a scris această carte, Tagore precizează că poemele în bengali datează din vremea călătoriilor în Japonia şi China, în timp ce acelea scrise în engleză din perioada petrecută în Italia, în lunile mai şi iunie ale anului 1926. Cartea Licuricii s-a bucurat de o oarecare specială în limba română chiar înainte de a fi publicaţi în engleză. Şapte poeme au fost traduse în 1927, însă până în prezent, nu s-a ştiut că ele fac parte din acest volum.

Povestea lor rămâne poate un episod marginal al receptării lui Tagore în cultura română, geneza lor pornind de la vizita poetului în România, în 20-22 noiembrie 1926, mai precis de la plecarea sa din portul Constanţa, unde l-a adus trenul de Bucureşti. Tagore a stat la Constanţa numai 40 de minute, înainte ca vaporul să ridice ancora spre Istanbul. I s-a organizat totuşi o primire oficială, de către „un grup de intelectuali", de fapt, elita oraşului: prefecţi şi subprefecţi, deputaţi şi judecători, vameşi şi poliţişti, profesori şi ingineri.37 După alocuţiunile oficiale şi mulţumirile resemnate ale celui omagiat, privilegiaţii au urcat împreună cu el la bordul vasului „împăratul Traian". Câţiva dintre intelectuali l-au urmat în cabină, unde i-au oferit exemplare ale cărţilor lor. Liviu Bordaş scrie în prefaţa Licuricilor despre învăţătoarea Florica Botez (1876-1956), fiica unui ofiţer din laşi, o persoană cu suflet nobil, ce primise o educaţia bună: ştia limbi străine, avea o cultură literară şi muzicală, cânta la pian şi picta. Pictura a fost, de altfel, pasiunea ei de o viaţă, în care a repurtat unele succese locale. După ce s-a mutat la Constanţa, a ajuns în scurt timp directoarea unei şcoli

Comunicarea interculturală din spațiul românesc de la Rabindranath Tagore la Ram Krishna Singh Anastasia Dumitru primare de fete şi a activat în viaţa culturală a oraşului (muzică, artă, presă).38 Florica Botez era una dintre admiratoarele entuziaste pe care poetul indian şi le câştigase la noi, mai ales după publicarea romanului ce o avea ca eroină pe Bimala. ,,Probabil modelul ei de dârzenie a inspirat-o să se lupte cu poliţiştii ca să ajungă mai aproape de Tagore, iar apoi ca să urce pe vapor, târând-o cu sine pe fiica ei. Nu doar ca să-i poată vorbi câteva minute celui pe care-l considera un „divin inspirat", un adevărat „sfânt Profet al Mântuitorului", ci pentru a primi binecuvântarea poetului şi a-i săruta mâna, moment în care a simţit un fior electric străbătând-o „pentru eternitate", purificând-o. Nu e de mirare că a văzut un nimb în jurul capului său. Toate acestea le-a povestit ea însăşi într-un articol pe care l-a scris învăluită de fericirea mistică de a-l fi atins pe Tagore,” scrie Liviu Bordaş în prefaţă.39 După câteva luni, Florica Botez face rost de adresa întemeietorului şcolii de la Shantiniketan. A primit răspuns la 1 martie 1927, prin secretarul literar al lui Tagore, Amiya C. Chakravarty (1901-1986), care va deveni el însuşi o personalitate literară şi academică în India şi Statele Unite. Poetul îi transmitea că a fost „profund mişcat" de „încântătoarea" scrisoare prin care-şi exprima sincera admiraţie şi că acceptă să o reîntâlnească în eventualitatea unei călătorii în Europa.40 În data de 15 iulie, primeşte un alt răspuns, sosit după ce poetul plecase într-un turneu în Indochina. ,,Permiteţi-ne să vă mulţumim pentru frumoasele Dvoastră gânduri (venite) dintro ţară îndepărtată. Aceasta dovedeşte (realitatea) adevărul unităţii spiritului omenesc, pe care praful politicii şi al ideilor preconcepute rasiale, nu îl poate întuneca. Dvoastră aţi devenit prietena spirituală a noastră, prin dragostea Dvoastră sinceră pentru idealul nostru Vishvabharati, care reprezintă credinţa Poetului nostru în omul universal şi simpatia Dvoastră ne-a însufleţit în realizarea acestui ideal.”41 Amiya C. Chakravarty, aflat la universitatea din Santiniketan, îi scria învăţătoarei din Constanţa, celei care întruchipa calităţile omului universal, că ea câştigase simpatia lui Tagore. Maestrul nu îi putea răspunde pentru că era plecat în Orientul îndepărtat pentru a studia influenţa vechii culturi indiene în acele locuri, în special asupra ,,nepreţuitelor temple şi sculpturi”, dovedind inspiraţia pe care arta indiană a dat-o culturilor de acolo. Secretarul precizează că Tagore nu i-a putut răspunde personal, însă i-a trimis, alături de o fotografie semnată de Poet, două manuscrise inedite ale acestuia. Amiya C. Chakravarty încheia astfel: ,,Sper ca această scrisoare să vă găsească fericită şi mulţumită, lucrând pentru binele frumoasei Dvoastră ţări cu poporul ales, al căreia am reuşit să creăm legături sincere de prietenie, prin Poetul nostru.

Salutări de pe acest pământ al verdeţii şi al soarelui strălucitor!”42

The 1st Annual Lecture on Exile in Comparative Literature and the Arts ALECLA 2018, 5-8 July, Constanta, Romania Tagore i-a trimis constănţencei dactilograma rezumatului (synopsis) conferinţei despre cooperaţie pe care Tagore o susţinuse recent (probabil în Java) şi nouă poeme scurte, dintre care cinci dactilografiate (două anulate) şi patru scrise de mână. Florica Botez a încredinţat presei aceste elemente ale tezaurului tagorian. Rezumatul conferinţei a fost prezentat ca un articol scris special pentru ziarul Dobrogea jună din Constanţa, iar cel de-al doilea manuscris a făcut subiectul unui articol din Rampa, ca „o poezie" inedită, în timp ce scrisoarea era considerată un mesaj trimis României.43 Din prefaţa cărţii Licurici: perle de înţelepciune, aflăm că „poezia" era inedită: cuprindea şapte „epigrame" (Poemele 222, 223 şi 224, care urmau să fie incluse în Fireflies, volum ce urma să apară în februarie 1928. Chiar dacă se poate spune că Licurici e o carte aproape necunoscută în limba română, sunt dovezi că volumul a fost citit în original, încă din perioada interbelică. Perpessicius, coleg de redacţie cu Eliade, îşi încheie astfel recenzia romanului Maitreyi: „Izbutind, cu diversele sale însuşiri şi în somptuoasa geografie a Indiei, această carte de mare simplicitate, d. Mircea Eliade a sporit cu unul seria miturilor erotice ale umanităţii, «Cine face binele ajunge la poarta templului, cine iubeşte pătrunde în sanctuar», scrie Rabindranath Tagore în unul din distihurile Licuricilor săi. Şi Maitreyi, ca un idol, s-a statornicit de mai înainte în sanctuarul dragostei."44 Liviu Bordaş consideră că nu este lipsită de semnificaţie legătura pe care Perpessicius o face între Licurici şi Maitreyi. Licuricii, aceste roiuri de scântei, ,,sunt unul dintre ingredientele” Indiei lui Eliade, în Maitreyi, India şi Nopţi la Serampore, mai ales prin păduri „primordiale", precum în drumul de la Kandy la Anuradhapura, de la Kapurthala la Amritsar sau de la Calcutta la Chandemagore. Iată că legăturile dintre spiritul indian şi cel japonez, în acest spaţiu al Dobrogei, unde Eliade pleda pentru o şcoală de studii euroasiatice, sunt mai vechi.

Deşi nu este de acord cu ,,transcendentalismul” Licuricilor lui Tagore, Liviu Bordaş încheia prefaţa, în mai 2013, scriind despre misticismul şi panteismul poetului indian. ,,Tagore a iubit viaţa, natura, omenirea, aşa cum o arată gândurile sale încredinţate lui Eliade. Şi totuşi, ochii săi lăuntrici erau întorşi către acel „dincolo", spune criticul, de aceea a evocat micile vieţuitoare ce simbolizează coincidenţa contrariilor în kabitica, stând sub semnul zenului, adăugăm noi. Ei sunt scânteile în noapte, simbolul plinului în vidul nopţii, dar şi sămânţa de lumină care vesteşte zorile. În plină zi, licuricii conţin esenţa beznei – iată un simbol al ciclicităţii pe care atât Tagore, cât şi unii poeţi, printre care şi români l-au înţeles, mai ales

Comunicarea interculturală din spațiul românesc de la Rabindranath Tagore la Ram Krishna Singh Anastasia Dumitru cei care cred în resacralizarea lumii prin mit (Blaga, Eliade etc.) Licuricii reprezintă ,,Corpusculi de lumină săgetând" în beznă. ,,Prin natura lor, faptul de a fi vii, licuricii rămân însă ancoraţi în „aici". Luând forma acestora, „fanteziile" poetului devin „lumină vie", reuşind astfel să fie, în acelaşi timp, de jos şi de sus, de aici şi de dincolo”,45 concluzionează indianistul Liviu Bordaş.

4. Haikuurile lui Tagore Voi aborda sintetic volumul Licuricii… pentru ca apoi să mă refer la textele contemporanului lui Singh, traduse la Constanţa. În debutul cărţii ,,Profetul Indiei” scria: ,,Sunt ale mele vise licurici,/ Vii nestemate sclipind în întuneric,/ Alese din lumină boabe mici,/ În amorţite nopţi zburând himeric./ Sunt stihuri scurte, mâzgălite,/ Şoapte de necunoscute flori/ La margine de drum uitate/ De ochi privind nepăsători”, iar la final preciza: ,,Fie ca înainte de sfârşit/ Să îmi cobor în inimă adânc,/ Şi să ating Divinul tot,/ Să plec din scoica în care mă-nveşmânt,/ S-o las să plece cu altele ca ea,/ Unde în timpuri noi va luneca.”46 Poezia este considerată ,,Cenuşăreasa zilelor noastre”, din care însă aflăm ,,perle de învăţătură”, de aceea poemele lui Tagore pot fi numite sapienţiale. Cultura este neglijată de contemporani: ,,Opere însemnate ce eterne-mi păreau/ Demult sunt epave duse la fund./ Dar înoată şi-acum pe timpul-ocean/ Vorbele-mi spuse cu uşurinţă de fulg.” Floarea este simbolul minunii şi al revelaţiei marilor întrebări, lotusul fiind chintesenţa: ,,Şopti un vânticel spre lotus o-întrebare:/ „Care ţi-e taina, floare?"/ „Taina sunt chiar eu", mărturisi cel întrebat./ „De mi-o răpeşti, dispar şi sunt uitat." Întâlnim motivul florii ca simbol al misterului cosmic în care se oglindeşte eternul: ,,Frumuseţe, mi-ai dăruit odinioară/ O floare cu spin ascuţit./ M-a înţepat dar nu am spus nimic/ Un namaşkar şi am zâmbit;” (p. 67) ,,Necunoscuta floare ajunsă pe pământ străin/ Îi zise bardului care trecea:/ „Iubit poet,/ Noi doi aşa-i c-avem aceleaşi rădăcini?” (p. 79); ,,Frunzele – tăceri veşminte/ În jurul florilor – cuvinte.” (p. 91); ,,Un trandafir nu este doar o scuză-mbujorată/ Pentru că-n destin/ El are un spin./ În inima cercului ce dansează etern/ E-un miez tăcut, neclintit şi solemn.”; ,,Ascultă!

Auzi pădurea cum se roagă?/ Ea cere libertate/ Pentru floarea-i dragă.” (p. 98); ,,Veştedă oftează floarea./ Plecată-i în vecie primăvara./ Când priveşte în sus,/ Floarea de iasomie/ Vede soarele-n văzduh -/ Crede că-i o floare vie. (p. 117); ,,Veştedă frunza se face pământ,/ Şi trăieşte din nou -/ Ca pădure sau câmp.” (p. 120). Poemele sunt ca nişte flori de colţ, uitate de ochii nepăsători la care au acces numai visătorii: ,,Ce-i visul? Clădit de zburătoare în firide/ Din ale somnului întunecate grote,/ E doar un cuib din rămăşiţele uitate/ Şi azvârlite-n colb de caravana zilei.” (Licurici… p. 29) Poetul foloseşte paradoxul din Zen şi osmoza dintre efemer şi etern: ,,Primăvara risipeşte/ Petalele ce n-au un mai târziu,/ În jocul clipei ea uitând/ Că ele-ascund un rod ce-i viu.” Din alt poem sugestiv înţelegem că:

The 1st Annual Lecture on Exile in Comparative Literature and the Arts ALECLA 2018, 5-8 July, Constanta, Romania ,,Moliile din beciul minţii/ Fac aripi translucide/ Şi-n zbor de bun rămas/ Se duc spre soareapune… Cătuşe rupe bucuria, trezită/ Din al pământului somn./ Erupe-n dans în frunzele vii./ Aripi de o zi ce-n veci nu adorm… Un fluture nu ţine şirul lunilor./ El numără doar clipe./ Şi totuşi tot timpul lumii/ Îl are el pe aripe.” Poetul doreşte o evadare din cotidian prin crearea versurilor: ,,Călare pe surprize-naripate/ Gândurile-mi pleacă-n zbor./ Duc hohotul de râs în spate.” Motivele cosmice sunt prilej de reflecţie asupra perfecţiunii: ,,Luna în creştere zâmbeşte cu-ndoială/ Când află că-i numai un crâmpei/ Din perfecţiunea-ntreagă”; ,,Şopti Luceafărul spre soare:/ „Spune-mi că pentru mine venit-ai tu în luncă."/ „Da", zise el, „la tine şi la floare"./ O vezi? Aceea mică - ce n-are nume încă." (p. 88). În Poemul 25, scrie despre marea rivalitate dintre Creatorul dătător de mântuire şi diavolul care ne vrea suflete: ,,Dumnezeu ne vrea tovarăşi;/ Vrea dragoste dreaptă./ Diavolul ne vrea supuşi;/ Aşteaptă supunere oarbă.” (p. 38) Tema credinţei este o constantă în lirica poetului indian: ,,Dumnezeu voia un temple/ Ridicat doar cu iubire./ Omul îi aduse pietre/ Şi-ncepu a sa clădire.” (p. 41); ,,Zeii, sătui de paradisul lor,/ Visează lumea oamenilor.” (p. 39); ,,Îl ating pe Dumnezeu/ Prin a mea cântare,/ Cum munţii se ating de mări/ Cu mâini făcute din izvoare” (p. 42); ,,Creaţia Domnului/ După al său sfârşit/ Se ridică iară./ Diavolul nu a putut crea/ Decât un rău strivit/ Sub propria povară.” (p. 62); ,,Credinţa-i o pasăre neadormită/ Ce cântă zorii care vin/ Când bezna nu-i încă risipită.” (p. 98) Tagore este poetul care captează frumuseţea clipei şi o eternizează prin creaţia poetică: ,,Iată Copilul Dumnezeu cum râde/ Înconjurat de jucării celeste:/ Nori vagabonzi, umbre din nopţi,/ Lumini trecute fără veste” (p. 41); ,,Iasomia spune cu-a sa floare/ Că îl iubeşte pe măreţul soare”; ,,Norii, coline făurite din vapori,/ Colinele, săpaţi în piatră nori -/ Năluci cu veşnicie-n nimb/ Văzute-n vis de timp”; ,,Lumina-şi deschide-n al său sipet culori/ Doar când trece prin războiul din nori”; ,,Astăzi eu râd de lacrimile/ Ce-am vărsat noaptea trecută,/ Cum râde copacul luminat/ După ploaia mult temută.”; ,,Am mulţumit copacilor/ Pentru rodul ce mi-au dat;/ Dar am uitat de iarbă,/ De verdele-i curat.” (p. 44). Tema naturii este liantul întregii creaţii tagoriene fiind dovada unui spirit de o mare sensibilitate lirică: ,,Floarea ce-i una şi deplină/ Să nu invidieze spinii/ Ce-s mulţi pe o tulpină;” ,,Acelaşi soare se naşte/ Din orizonturi de alt fel/ Şi cu străine răsărituri/ El întregeşte un inel” (p. 92); ,,Cu tinere ramuri, copacul de azi./ În el, bătrâna floare de champak./ Ea-i spune cea mai veche poveste,/ A primei seminţe de tânăr copac.” (p. 63); ,,Cu fiece trandafir ce vine/ Un altul nesfârşit îmi dă bineţe din primăvara/ Ce-i veşnic la zenit.” Dintre laitmotive, sunt folosite cel al licuricilor: ,,Licuriciul căutând în colb/ La stelele din cer e orb.” (p. 62); ,,E doar un zâmbet de la cel de sus/ Telurica lucire-a unui licurici,/ Din stele coborât un pământesc surâs” (p. 66); al frunzei: ,,I-e milă primăverii de ramul dezgolit, îi dă o frunzişoară, sărutul ei grăbit.”; al muntelui: ,,Muntele piere,/ Iarba rămâne undeva./ De multe ori murind/ în lume se va-napoia” (p. 64); ,,Muntele nu s-a clintit din drum./ Ceaţa crezuse că 1-a-nvins,/ Făcând din el un vălătuc de fum.” (p. 66); ,,Munţii cu dor privesc în cer,/ Dar nu-şi găsesc un glas./ Pământule, ce dor tăcut îţi e/ De tot ce-i dincolo de pas.” (p. 67); al aripei, sugerând diafanul: ,,Cu-aripa eu urme/ N-am lăsat în nor./ Dar am trăit minunea/ De-a fi ştiut că zbor” (p. 66) 58

Comunicarea interculturală din spațiul românesc de la Rabindranath Tagore la Ram Krishna Singh Anastasia Dumitru Motivul luminii şi al umbrei este esenţial pentru a arăta condiţia omului: ,,Flacăra durerii face pod de lumină,/ Arc peste suflet, prin mâl şi prin tină” p. 64; ,,Sfioasă umbra are un secret: Ea soarele în taină a iubit./ Ci taina florile-au aflat râzând/ Iar frunzele o spun şoptit.” (p. 65); ,,În livada vieţii/ Am multe avuţii/ De umbre şi lumini./ Nu-ncap în vistierii.” (p.

117); ,,Lumina, deşi străveche,/ E tânără de la-nceput;/ Umbra, venită de-o clipă,/ Bătrână sa născut.” (p. 117); ,,Lumina zilei trimite către stele/ Măiastra-i alăută aurie,/ Pe strune degetele lor tăcute/ Să cânte ruga vieţii-n veşnicie.” (p. 95); ,,Eu îţi aduc, o, noapte,/ Golit, al zilelor pocal./ Tu curăţă-1 cu întuneric rece/ Pentru al dimineţii ritual.” Lumina este asociată cu iarba pentru a sugera osmoza dintre etern şi efemer: ,,Prin firele de iarbă înălţate/ Viaţa tăcut trimite imn/ Luminii fără de moarte.” (p. 101); ,,Întunericul cântă./ Dansează-n ritmul lui lumina./ Vărsată-n stea, curgând în soare/ Ea-n vis şi-n suflet face-o mare”; ,,Îngăduie-mi opaiţul să mi-l aprind",/ Zise steaua-giuvaer./ „Nu socoti dacă va lumina îndeajuns/ Bezna ca s-o alung din cer." (p. 122) În Poemul 28, identificăm arhetipul copilului: ,,Copilul se ascunde în taina veşniciei./ Istoria nu-l ascunde în praful coliviei.” (p. 39) De o profundă sensibilitate sunt textele în care se menţionează legătura dintre terestru şi cosmic: ,,Pământul a ancorat copacul/ Şi răsplată cere - de el să stea legat./ Cerul i-a dat un capăt liber/ Şi fără dijmă aerul curat”; ,,Marea imploră muntele nesimţitor;/ El falnic se înalţă - cu pisc ascuns în nori./ Cu rugă şi cu lacrimi de izvoare/ Frumuseţea plânge şi se-agaţă/ De ale lui picioare./ Lui nici că-i pasă./ Nu se clinteşte;/ e-înalt şi fără viaţă!” Omul simte fiorul Genezei, chemarea Facerii, aşa cum fluturele zboară ridicându-se în văzduh: ,,Un râs uşor la fiecare pas al Creaţiunii mute îi umflă aripile de zburat prin timp mai iute.” Aceste poeme constituie o poetică a ascensiunii pentru revelarea sacrului: ,,Nemurirea preţioasă şi deplină/ Nu se făleşte cu numărul de ani,/ Ci cu-nălţimea în vârful de lumină”. (p. 30) Eul liric trăieşte despărţirile ca apropieri mistice care apropie: ,,Cel de departe veni la mine/ Când ziua răsărea./ Dar mai aproape îl simţii/ Când noaptea-l luă cu ea.” (p. 40) Poetul scrie despre consecinţele inversării valorilor: ,,Când pacea e ocupată cu strânsul de gunoi/ Şi mătură prin casă, se iscă un război;” sau despre nedreptăţile sociale: ,,Libertatea locuieşte-n furtună;/ Robia, în trunchiul de glie legat./ Vântul le-aduce-împreună/ La bal de copac, în ram clătinat” (p. 36); ,,Libertate vrea tiranul/ Ca altă libertate să ucidă./ Şi ce a prins cu-arcanul/ în cuşca lui să ţină” (p. 42); ,,Egoistul clădeşte o falnică utopie;/ Ucide un bine cu-a binelui tiranie.” (p. 55) Pledează pentru valorile eterne, în special pentru iubire şi libertate: ,,Între două ţărmuri, numite Tu şi Eu,/ Bate inima mea, strigă ocean/ Aflat în furtună mereu. Am să-1 străbat/ La tine să vin, sajung la liman.” (p. 94); ,,Darul de iubire/ Nu-i dar ce-i dat./ E-un dar ce aşteaptă doar/ Să fie acceptat.” (p. 122); ,,Roza spunea, crezând că ea va exista mereu:/ „N-am să te uit în veci, o, soare!"/ Şi i-a căzut corola-n praf,/ Sărmană, sărmană muritoare.” (p. 67); ,,Când eanotimpul înfloritei roze/ Dragostea e un pocal cu vin./ De-i ceas de foame în petale/ E vasul cel cu hrană plin.” (p. 79); ,,E apropierea noastră/ Zid prin care nu privim./ Iubire, sapă-ne fereastră/ Ca să ne-ntâlnim.” (p. 98); ,,Cu razele de soare/ Drumul lumii luminezi,/ Cu lampa de iubire/ Comoara poţi s-o vezi.” (p. 115); ,,Când moartea va veni şi-n şoaptă o să-mi zică: 59

Vor rămâne toate?"/ O să mă-ntrebe ea. „Asta nu ştiu", îi voi răspunde./ „Când le cântam Eu mă simţeam fără de moarte." (p. 122) Referindu-se la rolul libertăţii, cugeta: ,,Suntem liberi numai după ce-am plătit/ Preţul dreptului la viaţa ce-am trăit”, scrie poetul (p. 55); ,,Stăpânul mă laudă de trudesc pe pământ./ Domnul mă iubeşte când încep să cânt”; ,,Să îl iubesc pe Dumnezeu al meu aleg/ Numai ştiind că El mă lasă liber/ Îngăduindumi să-l reneg.” (p. 79) Tagore scrie şi despre ignoranţă: ,,Înţeleptu-ţi dă povaţă./ Prostul te izbeşte-n faţă.” (p. 95); ,,Să care după ea povara alăutei,/ Să creadă că struna costă mult,/ Să nu aibă habar ce muzică-i în ea/ E tragedia vieţii celui surd.” Motivul visului este o altă caracteristică a universului liric: ,,Viaţa mea, fluier de trestie,/ În ea curg note colorate;/ Prin goluri ele cântă/ Cu frumuseţi visate.” (p. 115); ,,Visele unei vieţi/ Se costumează-n copii,/ Vin pe lume/ Şi-ncep a trăi.” (p. 116). Specifică filosofiei asiatice este predilecţia pentru tăcerile revelatoare, aşa cum aflăm din poemele 248: ,,Mintea vrea să facă vorbe/ Tăceri cu sunete-mpletind./ La fel, văzduhul şi le face/ Luminile cu-ntunecări cănind.” (p. 120) şi poeme 251. ,,Doar când Tăcerea/ Mi se-atinge de cuvânt/ Îl povestesc pe El/ Şi aflu cine sunt.” (p. 121).

5. Ram Krishna Singh, Desăvârşirea lăuntrică Singh continuă lirica lui Tagore prin tematică şi prin profunzimea gândirii. Dacă prima parte a lucrării s-a axat pe identificarea unor legături interculturale dintre India şi România, în cea de-a doua parte vom aborda universul poetic al volumului Growing Within – Desăvârşire lăuntrică, tradus de Alexandra Flora Munteanu și Taner Murat, Constanța, Editura Anticus Press, 2017, conţinând haikuuri, tanka și alte poezii ale lui Ram Krishna Singh. Cartea nu vine pe un teren gol, mai ales că la Constanţa, Eliade pleda pentru o şcoală a interculturalităţii, unde, din 1992 lua fiinţă Şcoala de Haiku, din care a făcut parte în calitate de vice-preşedinte şi Alexandra Flora Munteanu (vezi cartea noastră Calea luminii, Iaşi, 2017). Cititorul european poate fi surprins de faptul că un profesor universitar, un veritabil cercetător, cum este Singh, scrie haikuuri, poeme aparent naive şi simple care nu ar face parte din preocupările unui intelectual erudit, aşa cum este autorul acestei cărţi, însă, dacă va înţelege că şi unele spirite enciclopedice ca Tagore şi Blaga s-au aplecat asupra acestei poezii simple, dar esenţiale, vor cerceta mai profund filiaţiile dintre cultura occidentală şi cea orientală, mult mai veche. Titlul volumului lui Ram Krishna Singh, lansat la Liceul Teoretic ,,Ovidius” pe 18 decembrie 2017, de Ziua Minorităților, Desăvârşirea lăuntrică, aminteşte de marile teme ale iniţiaţilor despre care am scris în cartea Calea luminii având o profunzime ascetică, o cale de vindecare a sinelui prin acces la suprasine, însemnând o creştere în interior prin linişte sufletească, echilibru şi creație. Cel care scrie a predat limba engleză studenților, masteranzilor şi doctoranzilor scrie o poezie care se trage din influenţa lui Tagore pentru că textele poetice sunt scurte, conţinând un șir de perle de înțelepciune, sub formă de haiku și tanka. Poemele sunt simple, rezumându-se la captarea esenţialului, această tehnică fiind o constantă a creaţiei literare a lui Singh, care a scris mai multe cărți în acest format. După cum aflăm din prefaţă, autorul precizează că şi-a revăzut poemele scrise 60

Comunicarea interculturală din spațiul românesc de la Rabindranath Tagore la Ram Krishna Singh Anastasia Dumitru în perioada şederii în Bhutan din 1974 și 1975 precum şi poezii compuse anterior în care îşi exprima ,,sentimentalismului romantic, dorințelor reprimate și pasiunilor și instinctelor frustrate”. ,,A fost într-adevăr o experiență unică, cu desăvârşire unică, atunci când am scris Tăcerea mea (1985) și Muzica trebuie să răsune (1990)”,47 mărturiseşte poetul, spunând că toate poemele nu au avut titlu. Textile, fie ele haiku sau tanka, sunt ,,instantanee ale vieții cotidiene, imagini ale naturii, sexului sau singurătății, și ale desăvârşirii lăuntrice”. Titlurile au fost adăugate numai pentru a identifica poemele fiindcă autorul a fost interesat de trăirea autentică nu de unele detalii structurale ca datarea sau identificarea titlurilor. Cititorul va descoperi un eu liric sensibil, pornit în călătorii solitare, pentru purificare şi desăvârşire spirituală. El e dornic de odihnă, de găsirea ritmului liniștit al vieţii şi al cosmosului, trăind într-un panteism. Alteori singurătatea îi tulbură sufletul pentru că nu poate accede la cunoaşterea totală a lumii. Instanţa lirică simte că ,,născocirea-i umbrită”, că ,,eliberarea e confuză”, aude ,,ecouri chinuitoare”, vede ,,fluxul mareei” sau nămolul vieţii. În această atmosferă, numai poezia este eliberatoare şi profetică. Se întreabă ,,Cui îi pasă?” că poetul trăieşte zbuciumul creaţiei, simte mizeria şi micimea lui în marele univers. El se mulţumeşte cu un cântec lăuntric, cu tăcerile revelatoare ale unui ,,Dumnezeu necuvântător” ori evadează în ,,virtual” găsind ,,un fel de a muri” şi de a uita exteriorul. Retragerea din lumea de afară înseamnă regăsirea eului profund, a desăvârşirii lăuntrice: ,,Călătorind/ descopăr dușmanii/ din interiorul/ șoaptelor liniștii/ din lipsa suflării/ slavă Domnului/ El este prezent/ în spațiile goale/ și mă pot întoarce/ de la margine/ către integralitate” (Călătorind, p. 25) Identificăm câteva arhetipuri, care generează imagini, simboluri, mituri, adevărate engrame ale spiritului, de aceea creaţia artistică a lui Singh este unui vizionar care se apleacă supra temelor eului şi ale tu-ului, prin care caută refugiu în universalitate, dorind o profundă contemplare mistică a esenţelor. În poemul Viața se eschivează, el scrie despre fascinaţia misterelor: ,,Cât de ciudat e că întotdeauna/ căutați să ne menținem sus, deasupra cerului/ munții și râurile/ se supun regulilor gravitației/ sincronizându-se cu natura/ sunt fascinat de mistere/ prea complexe pentru a putea fi înțelese/ revin acum în Bangalore/ din nou printre oameni…” (p. 33) Identificăm tema sacrului, manifestarea sau eşecul miracolului, coborârea omului în lume, transformarea lui în finit, în temporal îl determină să refacă prin actul sacru, întoarcerea, urcarea către lumină, prin rugăciune, prin asceză ca regăsire a esenţelor.

Poemele se referă la ,,o iniţiere isihastă”, sintagmă folosită de Valeriu Anania în cartea Rotonda plopilor aprinşi, unde aflăm că la Mânăstirea Antim se continua tradiţia răsăriteană a ,,sihăstriei”, a introvertirii, unde se căuta ,,înţelepciunea dinăuntru”.48 Prin abandonarea exteriorului, se cucerea deschiderea propice contemplării esenţelor, a desăvârşirii lăuntrice.

Poetul este un isihast, care trăieşte fie o starea de extaz prin iubire, fie una de ,,entaz, adică o înmănunchere a sufletului în propriul său interior, o perpetuă angajare în urcuşul lăuntric”,

El este un ,,ascet” (cuvântul provine de la substantivul grecesc askesis, un derivat al verbului askein, care avea iniţial sensul de ,,a modela cu meşteşug”, ulterior, s-a dezvoltat un al doilea sens: ,,a cultiva, a exersa”. De aici, askein, respectiv askesis, au ajuns să indice exerciţiile fizice ale atleţilor”.

Poemele sunt ale unui iniţiat, care caută semnificaţiile profunde ale spiritualităţii, ale trecerii din realitate spre sensul etern al căutării umane şi al descoperirii de sine. ,,O poezie se odihnește/ pe semnalele creierului înfățişate/ prin cuvinte și tăcere…/ mirosul se schimbă și se preschimbă în ritmuri/ care o fac profetică”, scrie el în O poezie este profetică. Textele poetice sunt rodul înţelepciunii şi al tăcerii care armonizează contradicţiile. Pornind din mijlocul minciunii şi al vidului cotidian, eul poetic, din fiinţă izolată, devine fiinţă universală. Lumina se preschimbă în iubire, devine deschidere, pentru cel ce se înalţă orizontul se lărgeşte şi se luminează, sufletul devine universal. ,,Ore întregi de tăcere/ și multe plimbări:/ fără cuvinte superficiale/ sau irascibilitate/ sau paranoia/ sau pelerinaj/ însă cântând lăuntric/ prin ziua în declin/ acustica lăuntrică/ pe creasta dealului/ nicio incantație întunecată:/ suspin pentru nirvana” se destăinuie în Cânt lăuntric. (p. 101) Alteori poetul este surprins în ,,zbor fără aripi/ în retrasă singurătate”, practicând sadhana, una dintre tehnicile spirituale care duc la perfecțiune în hinduism, acestea fiind contemplarea, asceza, închinarea la un zeu și viața corectă: ,,retras în sine/ devin o oază/ alergând un miraj… privind/ întunericul dintre stele/ iluminare”. (p. 151) Continuându-l pe Tagore, Singh valorizează temele buddhiste, zeităţile indiene şi motivele poetice preferate de Tagore. Dintre speciile japoneze, Singh preferă secvenţele tanka, haikuul şi senryu-ul de care se simte atras, oferindu-i cea mai bună cale de exprimare. De la tăcere, poetul trece la evidenţierea rolului muzicii, de aceea ne îndeamnă să prindem ritmurile, să auzim sunetele, să admirăm minunile lumii. Universul este perceput cu toate simțurile: vederea, auzul, gustul, atingerea, pentru a capta ritmul vieții. Sunt folosite antitezele specifice zenului: ,,se încălzesc împreună/ pe brațul unui ventilator de tavan/ doi porumbei (poemul 20, p. 220); ,,adunând/ florile veştede de pe zeități:/ e iar dimineață” (12, p. 218) ,,Stele strălucind/ poteca gândacului/ din gunoi de grajd (30, p. 224). ,,Numele ei/ scris pe nisip:/ un val se sparge” (80, p. 244). Temele predominante sunt iubirea şi natura, ,,un trandafir ofilit/ zace în buruienile dintre pietre -/ ziua îndrăgostiţilor” (101, p.448); creaţia şi solitudinea: ,,A poem/ in your beauty/ light of love”/ un poem/ în frumusețea ta/ lumina iubirii (77, p. 240). După cum aflăm din Călătorie solitară, scopul poetului este înţelegerea destinului, iubirea, dorinţa de a avea ,,libertatea de a gândi, a căuta, a crea și a trăi”. (p. 27) Motivele sunt cele terestre: pomii, cocorii, sau cele acvatice: lotuşii: ,,sumedenie de lotuși/ legănându-se pe o singură tulpină -/ beatitudine” (p. 152), valul, malul, ,,pe malul râului/ sufletul său se luminează în linişte -/ felinare pe cer” (p. 153), dar şi motivele de mare profunzime inspirate din creştinism sau buddhism: ,,Obosit de trecut/ trăind prezentul meu/ renunț să îmi mai fac griji:/ în așteptare, în spirit/ nu mă mai îngrijorez/ pentru necazuri/ înainte de a le avea/ nu sunt Iov sau Daniel/ însă acum caut pacea lor/ și mă odihnesc în lumina soarelui”. (Odihnă, p. 31) Din Secvențe haiku impresionează mai multe poeme, dintre care Buddha: ,,portretul lui Buddha/ în corpul de 62

Comunicarea interculturală din spațiul românesc de la Rabindranath Tagore la Ram Krishna Singh Anastasia Dumitru gardă/ tăcere de Haiku… lacrimi invizibile/ pe fața lui de apă/ Buddha meditează/ el meditează/ vede întruchiparea lui Buddha/ plângând pentru noi… pace în tăcerea/ celulelor inimii și corpului:/ calmul lui Buddha”(p. 142-144). Poemul Tăcere este atât de profund, încât nu îl mai comentez pentru a nu-i tulbura farmecul: ,,albul şi albastrul/ împestrițate pe pânză/ văzând ochiul tăcerii… tăcerea țărmului/ pasaj interior al minții:/ umbra sinelui în lună… tăcerea nopții -/ cu somnul tulburat/ scriind haiku” (p. 145, 147). Licuricii lui Tagore sunt asociaţi cu efemerul: ,,degetele simt/ licurici în putrefacție/ în luminile nopții”. (23, p.

221) Se observă paradoxul, diferenţa dintre efemerul cărnii şi eternul luminii, iar simbolul licuricilor fac transferul dintre cele două planuri antitetice.

Singh este atât un poet de factură tradiţională pentru că îl continuă pe Tagore, având aceleaşi teme ca ale predecesorului său, cât şi un scriitor modern, care foloseşte invenţiile contemporane. Identificăm rolul internetului, care facilitează conexiunile interculturale: ,,sfârșitul festivalului:/ mă opresc la haikuul ei/ de pe twitter.com” (92, p. 245), ,,trenul care nu opreşte/ mă cedează/ Facebook-ului depresie” (110, p. 251), însă nu tehnologia, ci comuniunea dintre om şi natură, dintre microcosmos şi macrocosm este nucleul poemelor lui Singh, acesta fiind liantul volumului Desăvârşire lăuntrică. ,,Călătorind încerc/ să înalț din tăcere/ rugăciunea” este un alt text esenţial, sugestiv. (p. 149).

6. Pledoarie pentru o şcoală interculturală la Tomis La o sută de ani de la decernarea premiului Nobel, acordat lui Tagore, apărea cartea lui Licurici: perle de înţelepciune, în 2013, în care poetul scrie despre întoarcerea la firesc, la revenirea în fire. Poate că nu întâmplător cel care, în anul 1913, aducea lumii literare asiatice primul premiu Nobel în Asia, după ce premiul păruse că va rămâne pentru mult timp cantonat în portul lumii bune a literelor europene, a hotărât să treacă prin Constanţa, de unde Tagore a luat vaporul. Poate că ar fi bine să ne înnobilăm cu toţii de ideile constante ale Orientului care îndeamnă la înţelepciunea milenară a contemplării atât de necesare în timpurile bulversante ale Occidentului dezlănţuit ca un adolescent rebel. Poate că nu întâmplător primele manuscrise ale Licuricilor au fost oferite unei erudite învăţătoare, care nu avea nu numai darul mentoratului, ci şi cel interdisciplinar, fiind înzestrată cu harul poetic, muzical şi pictural, un spirit transmodern, născut în România, care, trăind la malul Mării Negre, în acest spaţiu cosmopolit, al sincretismului religios, înţelegea importanţa dialogului cu un maestru spiritual care dorea să împace continentele atât de diferite ca vechime, nivel de trai şi mentalitate. Tagore a fost apreciat de cele mai mari personalităţi ale lumii pentru că a fost un personaj fabulos: poet, romancier, dramaturg, filosof, pictor, compozitor, eseist, profesor, ecologist, formator de opinii, fondator de şcoală, promotor al dansului, cântăreţ, creator de manuale, autorul imnurilor naţionale ale Indiei şi Bangladeshului. El a fost profetul modern care a anticipat marile taifunuri ale secolului al XX-lea: cele două războaie mondiale, dictaturile sângeroase, care au omorât oameni, în loc să omoare idei. Ar trebui să conştientizăm că şi acum lumea este în pericol de autodistrugere

Mai ales Europa ignoră celelalte continente, pe care le-a exploatat şi continuă se le exploateze, de aceea Tagore pledează pentru pacea dintre naţiuni, armonie şi desăvârşire spirituală.

Ar fi bine să cugetăm mai mult la conceptul Santiniketan, la „Umanismul lui Tagore", la ideile lui Eminescu, Eliade etc. Cu cât un poet e mai naţional, el e mai universal. Să ne amintim că Tagore a apreciat România, numind-o „frumoasa voastră ţară“ şi „blândul popor“, de care India este legată printr-o „trainică prietenie“. Poetul naţional al Indiei ne-a îndemnat să stimăm oamenii de cultură care scriu despre unitatea spiritului omenesc. Înţeleptul a făcut distincţia dintre ,,praful politicii şi al ideilor preconcepute rasiale” care întunecă şi adevărata elită care crede în idealul de tip Vishvabharati – etnii şi religii diferite adunate la umbra aceluiaşi pom al păcii. (Spaţiul bibliotecii i-a unit pe atât de diferiţii Mircea Eliade şi Maitreyi Devi, cărţile fiind începutul dialogului spiritual şi cultural, există un depozit milenar care aşteaptă să fie explorat de omul universal, dornic de cunoaştere).

Cât de departe este acest ideal comparativ cu ţelul lumii contemporane pornite spre noi terenuri de vânătoare, spre căutarea capitalului economic şi mai puţin cultural. Să cunoaştem tainele spaţiilor fascinante, aşa cum este toposul Indiei, descrise de Eliade în Maitreyi, India, Yoga, Isabel şi Apele diavolului etc. Numai aşa putem găsi asemănări dintre cultura indiană şi cea populară românească, să identificăm unele arhetipuri comune, a elementelor de unitate ale Orientului şi ale Europei. Să readucem încrederea în valorile spirituale, nu numai în cele materiale, despre care am scris în cartea Metamorfozele cuvântului, Editura Eikon, 2016. Să ne reamintim ce spuneau scriitorii: „Şi iată, astfel, înainte de restaurarea lumii, toate religiile se atingeau între ele într-un singur punct: Rugăciunea” (Balzac) sau să înţelegem sensul poemelor lui Tagore: ,,Îl ating pe Dumnezeu/ Prin a mea cântare,/ Cum munţii se ating de mări/ Cu mâini făcute din izvoare” pentru că ,,Dumnezeu ne vrea tovarăşi; Vrea dragoste dreaptă”, după cum ne spune ,,Profetul Indiei moderne”, în Licurici: perle de înţelepciune sau scriitorul contemporan, Singh, tradus de Alexandra Flora Munteanu și Taner Murat, care, prin volumul său, ne îndeamnă la Desăvârşire lăuntrică şi la iubire: ,,Un poem/ în frumusețea ta/ lumina iubirii”. Poate că nu întâmplător România este aşezată pe harta lumii nu numai în calea imperiilor, ci şi la întretăierea drumurilor dintre Apus şi Răsărit, de aici poate renaşte spiritualitatea atât de necesară Apusului, despre care scria Singh: ,,Călătorind încerc/ să înalț din tăcere/ rugăciunea; Unul de celălalt/ ei se apropie ca de ei înșiși -/ liniștea iubirii”. Într-un timp nebun, când occidentalul nu are răstimpul lecturilor complexe şi complete, Licuricii lui Tagore sau cartea lui Singh suplinesc nevoia de pastile spirituale, micropoemele sunt adevărate perle înţelepte, conţinând repere de etică, lecţii de viaţă şi reflecţii despre divinitate, natură şi om, un îndemn la găsirea armoniei dintre micro şi macrounivers. Poate că vom rupe şi noi barierele rigide nu numai ale graniţelor dintre ţări, ci şi ale prejudecăţilor şi vom încerca să urcăm pe vapor la fel ca Tagore pentru a cunoaşte partea cealaltă a globului atât de bogată în valori spirituale aşa cum demonstram în cărţile Calea luminii şi Metamorfozele cuvântului. Am demonstrat că preocupările pentru cunoaşterea mentalităţii asiatice au fost vechi, de la influenţa creaţiei populare (Varlaam şi Ioasaf), la literatura cultă (România l-a dat pe primul orientalist occidental, Cantemir), 64

Comunicarea interculturală din spațiul românesc de la Rabindranath Tagore la Ram Krishna Singh Anastasia Dumitru trecând prin preromantici la ultimul mare romantic al lumii, Eminescu, analizând preocupările lui Haşdeu, Sic cogito, ale lui G. Coşbuc, care a fost atras de epica Mahabharatei şi de poezie dramatică a Sakuntalei, din care a tradus. Toţi marii scriitori români (Eliade, Blaga, Al. George etc.) au fost fascinaţi de spiritul indic, de mitologia şi de marile teme ale ţării care l-a dat pe Tagore, primul asiatic, laureat al premiului Nobel pentru literatură. ,,Mi-e dor de Gange şi de Himalaya”, spunea Vasile Voiculescu, în Gânduri albe, poetul isihast care, deşi nu a fost în India, a scris despre Sakuntala şi despre vraja Orientului, evocând unda sacră a poeziei purificatoare care ne dezvăluie înţelesul înălţimii, al levitaţiei sufleteşti spre cele statornice şi, de fapt, spre integrarea în spirit, aşa cum aflăm din cartea lui Tagore, Calea desăvârşirii sau din cea a lui Singh, Desăvârşire lăuntrică, apărută la Constanţa, în toposul unei constante a spiritului. Să medităm asupra versurilor lui: ,,în linişte/ şi armonie cu voința divină/ desăvârşire lăuntrică”, urmând practica isihastă a înţelepţilor Orientului care îi poate orienta pe debusolaţii occidentali.

Eugen Ionescu: Exile and Its Manifestations Abstract: This paper deals with Eugène Ionesco’s self-exile in France. I examine the way the dramatist of Romanian origin built up his own attitude in theater and imposed his view on dramaturgy, heroes, scene, and role in a new world and spirituality. I explore his rebellious character, his revolutionary thinking, his inner power and self-esteem showed by his youth writings and the way he later created his absurd anthropology under the deep influence of Antonin Artaud and other playwrights.

Dacă vrem să știm ce semnifică noțiunea de exil, dicționarele de limbă română și cele de limbi străine definesc: De limbă franceză: “exiler” - a exila, a surghiuni, a se exila, a se surghiuni, a se expatria, apleca, a părăsi.(dicționarul francez –român, ED. Științifică, București, 1967; Oxford Word power Dictionary-Oxford University Press, 2004 propune: “exile”- a pleca (din motive politice), a fi exilat, a se exila. În lucrarea de față vreau să pun în discuție exilul unui autor de origine română. Eugen Ionescu( Slatina, 1909). Din punct de vedere istoric România trecea prin momente de tensiune. Așa se face că , după nașterea lui Eugen, părinții lui pleacă în Franța. Tatăl de origine română, mama, Therese Icard , de origine franceză. Fiul va face studii la liceele din București, se înscrie la Universitatea București. Începe să scrie eseuri critice și de artă.

Revistele în care apare: România literară, Zodiac, Vremea, Azi, Floarea de Foc. Contactul cu totalitatea scrierilor românești ale lui Ionescu revela și fizionomia unui scriitor atipic -, ca destin și opinie -, aflat într-o permanentă criza (pe fundalul celei a generației sale), scriitor care s-a găsit pe sine târziu, în ciuda unui precoce talent. Semnificativ este faptul că la începuturile românești ale lui Ionescu ignora dramaturgia, căreia i se va consacra apoi, după debutul cu “Cântăreața cheală” din 1950. Este si momentul când scriitorul mai e prizonierul unui bilingvism literar (“Cântăreața cheală” are încă o varianta în românește: “Englezește fără professor”), bilingvism care a avut urmări tematice și stilistice mai cu seamă în piesele din prima perioadă a dramaturgului. Scrierile românești ale lui Ionescu prevestesc de altfel opera în limba franceza. Totodată, ele pot revendica pentru autorul lor un loc distinct în momentul interbelic al literaturii române. Dacă poezia lui Ionescu are o valoare modestă - nu poezia fiind "genul" în care forța sa lirică s-a exprimat cel mai bine, ci fragmentele de "jurnal" (românești si franceze) sau teatrul, critica sa, în genere foarte exigentă, dezvăluie o 67

Inutilitatea criticii literare, clamată pe fundalul constatării inutilității literaturii în genere (în raport cu metafizicul sau cu valorile umane). La Liceul Sf. Sava din București predă franceză. Obține o bursă din partea guvernului francez în scopul realizării tezei de doctorat la Paris, dar nu o realizează. În 1942 se stabilește acolo definitiv. Pericolul extinderii fascismului îl neliniștește. Începe să scrie teatru care se joacă prin 1950 (“Cântăreața cheală”). Urmează “Scaunele”, “Rinocerii”, “Ucigaș fără simbrie”, “Setea și foamea”, care treptat îi aduc succesul, dar și contestarea. Oricum, prin structură, subiect, mesaj este original, iar absurdul pe care îl proclamă ca mod de rezolvare îi oferă statutul de unul dintre marii dramaturgi ai secolului. Fiind scrise în limba franceză și în Franța este socotit scriitor francez. În 1971 devine membru al Academiei Franceze, doctor honoris causa la mai multe universități din Europa si America. Teoretician al "avangardei" teatrale din deceniul șase, impropriu numită "teatrul absurdului", autor al mai multor volume de nuvele, jurnal, publicistică. Contactul cu totalitatea scrierilor românești ale lui Ionescu revela si fizionomia unui scriitor care rezolva una dintre situațiile speciale de manifestare a spiritului creator. În România, pentru literatura națională rămâne cu lucrările critice de început. ”Nu„ este prima carte. Este multă frondă. Dar în privința precursorilor români îl recunoaște pe Ion Luca Caragiale, apoi pe Costache Urmuz. Dar ce s-a întâmplat în literatura română?

Istoria românească a teatrului ne obligă să dăm câteva nume. Teatrul de la Junimea (un cerc literar și mai târziu o societate literară) reprezentat de D. Ollănescu-Ascanio, Iacob Negruzzi, Vasile Alecsandri, G. Bengescu-Dabija, Bodnărescu, Bogdan Petriceicu Haşdeu.

Au impus proverbul dramatizat, comicul de situație, drama istorică, uneori pe motive antice.

I.L.Caragiale fiind unul dintre marii noștri clasici care reprezintă orașul și aspirațiile lui. La o analiză mai riguroasă se remarcă faptul că, pe lângă atracție către realism, este un cunoscător al clasicismului francez. Iar curentul din prima jumătate a secolului trecut al apariției scenice îi cupinde pe: Labiche, Scribe, Augier. Tudor Vianu, estetician și istoric literar îl înțelege pe Caragiale în legătură cu mișcarea literară a sec. al XIX-lea din Franța, dar și influența lui Alecsandri, pe linie românească, care, și el, este sub înrâurirea culturii franceze. Eugen Ionescu întâlnește la Caragiale automatismul verbal, clișeele limbajului și formule stereotipe care corespund unui proces de depersonalizare și dezumanizare pe care personajele le utilizează. Ele devin, existențial, purtătorii unei tendințe de a camufla adevărul unei lumi absurde. Antonin Artaud îl influențează în manifestările ”teatrului cruzimii” și al teatrului suprarealist. Pentru Ionescu nu există decât un spectacol dramatic.

Personajele sale se consideră că sunt pivot și personaje mecanisme. “În realitate, existența lumii nu mi se pare absurdă ci de necrezut, căci în interiorul existenței și al lumii se poate vedea clar, se pot descoperi legi și stabili reguli”rezonabile. Ceea ce este de neînțeles nu apare decât atunci când urci la sursele existenței, deci atunci când stai pe margine și o privești în ansamblul ei” (Ionescu, Albatros, 1990)

Eugen Ionescu: Exilul și manifestările sale Alexandra Flora Munteanu Astfel ne punem întrebarea: ce a însemnat exilul pentru Eugen Ionescu? În primul rând cunoștea limba franceză la perfecție, cunoștea Franța. Avea obișnuința plecărilor și a întoarcerilor. Dar modul în care s-a adaptat este special. Ca intelectual deja format, din mediu intelectual nu a suferit dezechilibru. Adaptarea s-a făcut la nivelul structurilor instituționale și spiritual s-a pliat pe comunicare cu scriitorii. Deși original în toate formulele scenice, s-a lăsat influențat de Antonin Artaud, cel care tindea spre un teatru tridimensional.

Spațiul scenic trebuia utilizat. În piesele lui Ionescu se simte această extensie. În lucrarea “Notes et Contre-Notes” se mărturisește a fi dezamăgit de faptul că teatrul nu are nimic comun cu realitatea pe care el o reduce, în final, la niște schițe. El spunea: ”Să mergi adânc în caricatură, în grotesc, dincolo de palida ironie a comediilor de salon, ci farsa, șarja parodică la extrem” Și mai departe, tot din Notes et Contre-Notes: ”Două stări de conștiință fundamentale sunt la baza tuturor pieselor mele […]. Aceste două stări de conștiință fundamentale sunt ale fugitivului și greoiului; ale vidului și ale plinului de prezent” (Bădescu, 1990, p.143) Personalitatea lui Eugen Ionescu s-a impus astfel încât noutatea a fost adusă pe scenă. Ideea că omul are și suișuri și coborâșuri a făcut din personajele sale unele tragice, fără întoarcere la formula inițială. Ele vorbesc despre o societate în care omul este ignorat din cauza convențiilor și a marasmului de neînțelesuri ce se impun din cauza imposibilității de exprimare și din refuzul de a-i înțelege pe ceilalți. Cele câteva interviuri acordate pun în evidență un caracter contradictoriu. Întrebat fiind ce crede despre catolicism (aceasta dovedește o cunoaștere profundă și o analiză a realității existente, poporul francez fiind, în general, catolic), dar ține să-și exprime admirația față de ortodoxie. Eugen Ionescu: „Dacă Dumnezeu există e mai bine să faci altceva decât literatură”. Convorbire între părintele Lendger şi Eugen Ionescu E.I.: E justificarea tuturor predicilor dumneavoastră. Pe Dumnezeu nu-L putem înţelege, în Dumnezeu trebuie să credem. Tindem spre inaccesibil.

Nu putem face inaccesibilul accesibil. Nu putem numi nenumitul. Această realitate nu este realistă. Preoţii nu se mai folosesc de limbajul Celui Veşnic.

De exemplu, când ne vorbesc despre dreptate, nu ne vorbesc despre dreptatea trans-istorică, ci despre cea a tribunalelor. Dreptatea lui Dumnezeu nu e dreptatea oamenilor. Fratele meu nu este tovarăşul meu.

Rămâne în Biserica Ortodoxă ceva insolit, ceva ascuns, pur, imuabil P.L.: Vorbiţi despre Biserica Catolică. Dar există deopotrivă şi Bisericile Ortodoxe.

E.I.: Da, dar acolo e altceva. Biserica Catolică a început de mult să înlocuiască metafizica prin morală şi catolicismul era de mult timp pe cale de a se pierde în lume. Şi dacă există o absenţă a contemplaţiei şi o absenţă a metafizicii în lumea modernă, aceasta se datorează în mare parte catolicismului, istoricizării catolicismului.

Biserica Ortodoxă, deşi a dat cezarului ce este al cezarului, deşi a acceptat aparent Istoria, a rămas în afara Istoriei. Ea n-a declarat niciodată război Istoriei, nu s-a amestecat în Istorie, a coexistat. A găsit întotdeauna acomodări cu secolul, niciodată cu cerul. Biserica Catolică găseşte acomodări cu cerul. Rămâne în Biserica Ortodoxă ceva insolit, ceva ascuns, pur, imuabil şi uneori mi-e dor să trăiesc în Rusia sau în Polonia. Când citesc “Témoignage chrétien” sau “La Croix”, (ziare catolice – n. trad.) sunt consternat. Nu am găsit decât articole politizate.

P.L.: Am reflectat, ascultându-vă, la diferenţa care există între Biserica Catolică şi Biserica Ortodoxă. Biserica Occidentului şi Biserica Orientului: Biserica Orientului este o Biserică care s-a închinat mai mult decât cea catolică cezarului; şi în acelaşi timp a rămas în mai mare măsură fidelă sieşi decât Biserica Catolică.

E.I.: Da, s-a închinat cezarului, dar a rămas separată de cezar. Eram foarte tânăr, eram în România. Am fost botezat în Biserica Ortodoxă, dar cum am venit în Franţa de când aveam un an, am fost la catehism în Franţa şi am fost crescut ca un catolic, iar la 13 ani şi jumătate, când m-am întors la Bucureşti, m-am dus la Biserica Ortodoxă. Pe la 18 ani, am simţit o nevoie ceva mai presantă de a găsi ceea ce numim Dumnezeu şi am văzut un călugăr athonit (venea de la Muntele Athos). M-am mărturisit lui; acesta m-a întrebat: „Te ascult, ce doreşti să-mi spui?” „Părinte, am făcut fapte înfricoşătoare…” „Da, bine, asta nu mă interesează.” Am vrut să i le spun. „Da, da, înainte de a-mi spune ce ai făcut, spune-mi în ce crezi?” „Dar nu ştiu, aş vrea şi eu să ştiu.” „Ei bine, acesta e lucrul cel mai important; că ai făcut nu ştiu ce, că ai omorât, că ai săvârşit incest, că ai furat, toate astea sunt lucrurile acestei lumi şi n-au nici o importanţă. Trebuie să crezi, asta e totul.” (Ionescu, 1977)

Eugen Ionescu: Ceea ce mi se pare scandalos este faptul că Biserica pare că vrea să se aneantizeze în Istorie, în asemenea măsură se teme de a fi în afara Istoriei. Este aberant, pentru că rolul său este într-adevăr de a fi în afara Istoriei, de a conduce lumea, Istoria, spre Cel Veşnic, de aceea ea trebuie să ridice Istoria în supra-Istorie, trebuie să ofere tehnicile rugăciunii şi ale contemplaţiei. Acum ea pare să nu mai facă altceva decât politică şi demagogie. Biserica nu vrea să-şi piardă clientela, ci să-şi câştige şi alţi clienţi. Este aici un semn de secularizare cu adevărat dezolant. Omul are nevoie astăzi tocmai de o insuliţă care să nu fie dusă de vânturile Istoriei, care să reziste la furtuni, care să nu fie temporală. Adică tocmai ceea ce Biserica nu mai vrea, nu mai poate, nu mai ştie, nu mai încearcă. (Ionescu, 1977)

Eugen Ionescu: Exilul și manifestările sale Alexandra Flora Munteanu Caragiale și Urmuz. N-a uitat sa adauge: "mai sunt și alți scriitori români care au putut să mă marcheze. Aceștia sunt poeții populari anonimi: poezia populara româna este bogata, este mare". Dar uita, oare, Eugen Ionescu studiile sale atât de amănunțite asupra unor scriitori români, analizele sale prin care si-a început cariera literara? Oricare ar fi părerea noastră despre articolele adunate în volumul Nu, asupra acelor teribile pamflete - nu găsesc alt epitet mai potrivit care sa indice încercarea de a exercita un soi de terorism literar prin teribilisme juvenile - repet, oricum am privi textele referitoare la poezia lui Arghezi si Ion Barbu, precum si romanul lui Camil Petrescu.

De la romanticii "oameni fără rost", prin creatori ai spleen-ului, până la angoasații plictisului existențial, generații de fii ai ultimelor două secole au cunoscut acest rău al neputinței de a se părăsi pe sine. Eugen Ionescu, în acei ani ai începuturilor sale, era prea lucid pentru ca să nu-și dea seama că numai o transcendere a acestui egotism, o depășire a echilibrului indecis între trăire si creație îl poate mântui. "Înțeleg că numai așa m-aș putea salva: murind pentru jumătate din mine, trăind pentru jumătate din mine. Trebuie să risc totul pe o singură carte. Numai riscând totul pot câștiga totul". Dar, în van. Neputința sa majora, pe care și-o recunoaște, este

tocmai aceasta: de a se transcende pe sine. El nu se sfiește să recunoască: "sunt fricos,. sunt șovăielnic. Nu am decât atitudini duble . Aceasta e marea mea tragedie: nu mă pot devota. Nu mă pot transcende". Așteptând, parcă, o minune, tânărul scriitor se refugia într-un nihilism de situație

(cum ai spune: o nevroza de situație), un nihilism al indiferentei: "Toate problemele sunt egal de importante, egal de neimportante, egal de neadevărate." Dar, încă o dată, toate acestea denotă o neputință a transcenderii.

La 29 august 1932 spunea: "Mi-e teama. Am avut o dată senzația iminentei morți: a fost o debandadă în mine, o panică, un țipăt din toate fibrele, un refuz îngrozit al ființei mele întregi. Nu e nimic în mine care vrea să accepte moartea". Dar teama de moarte (dacă nu moartea însăși)

poate fi exorcizată prin procedee cvasi magice. Cuvântul alunga tenebrele, si, îndeosebi, evocarea parodică a morții o ține oarecum la distantă, ca un ritual taumaturgic: evocată, moartea care "umblă în jurul nostru tâlhărește" se retrage. În aceeași zi în care notează o importantă criză a morbidei sale frici, Eugen Ionescu scrie pe aceeași temă o adevărată parodie a fricii - cu indicațiile de regie corespunzătoare unei comedii: "mai târziu - Nu mai pot îndura atâta frică! Atâta frică, atâta frică, atâta frică etc. etc." Un adevărat dezgust îl cuprinde pe cel atins de obsesia thanatica. În orele de anxietate, Eugen Ionescu simte un val de dezabuzare copleșindu-l. "Frica de moarte mă dezgustă de tot”.

* „Am impresia că de secole catolicismul se pierde în lume, că este desfigurat” Acomodarea în exil a însemnat acceptare , dar rațională și o cunoaștere reală a mecanismelor de funcționare ale instituțiilor, dincolo de ceea ce reprezintă. Eugen Ionescu este un caz fericit care a ajuns să se impună prin seriozitate, prin cultura română de la care dobândise ABC-ul culturii, deși, privind literatura, își exprimase tranșant unele opinii

Dar s-a demonstrat contrariul. Ajuns în Franța abordează dramaturgia pe care o duce pe cele mai înalte culmi. Oricum parcurgerea paginilor de teatru și toate textele scrise înseamnă abordarea unei noi orientări și interpretări. În Academia Franceză a intrat pentru originalitate, cultură și argument.

Dramaturgul Eugen Ionescu, de la nașterea căruia s-au împlinit mai mult de 100 de ani, și filosoful Emil Cioran au fost numiți post-mortem membri ai Academiei Romane, anunța academicianul Marius Sala.

Ram Krishna Singh and/or Poetic Unease: Lecture Notes Abstract: This paper highlights the path of Ram Krishna Singh's poetic personality in which haiku are distinguished flowers, jewels of thought in a state of grace, which conveys the visibility and invisibility, the chiaroscuro of his experience and his philosophy of life.

Poetica lui Ram Krishna Singh – personalitate marcantă a culturii beletristice indiene a zilelor noastre, autor a nu mai puțin de șaptesprezece colecții de poezii și posesor a mai multor premii și onoruri academice și literare – este mărturia scrisă, admirabil realizată estetic, a universului său de trăiri, emoții, gânduri, de percepții și convingeri, cu „textură proaspătă și o arhitectură proprie”, cu compoziții – mai mult sau mai puțin extinse – ce oferă, cum însuși autorul spune: „instantanee ale vieții cotidiene, imagini ale naturii, sexului sau singurătății”, cu un cuvânt, „Growing Within. Desăvârșirea lăuntrică”1, cum sună, poate orgolios, dar real, titlul unui volum de poezie.

Ram Krishna Singh, prolific „producător” de imagini poetice – haiku, tanka, alte poeme – vine dintr-o spiritualitate milenară, din India, o țară cât un subcontinent, o spiritualitate ce a dat lumii valori literar-filosofice, precum Vede-le-scrieri sacre, colecții de imnuri și cântece, - epopeile Mahabharata și Ramayana – poeme populare eroice cu caracter legendar și semiistoric - , fabulele Panciatra ale înțeleptului Bidpay, intrate în circuitul european prin traduceri în peste 50 de limbi – o versiune integrată în limba română o datorăm sanscritologului Theodor Simenschi – multe alte comori spirituale.

Ram Krishna Singh forează în adâncurile sufletului și experienței sale de viață și, ca un veritabil hindus –nedeclarat – ne duce pe cărările d’harma – virtute, trăire în cinste, artha – bunătate obținută pe căi drepte și karma – dăruire a prieteniei și dragostei.

Cu o tehnică și știință poetică de invidiat, Ram Krishna Singh mărturisește în subsidiar că este un om simplu, neveleitar, fără orgolii de vizionar și misionar al credinței – fie chiar și ale sale proprii. Ram Krishna Singh ne face părtaș la trăirile și reflecțiile sale, la pelerinajul universului său ideatic-estetic. Ram Krishna Singh scrie clar, limpede, răspicat „Nu sunt Iisus” („I Am No Jesus”) – titlul unui alt excepțional volum de poeme, tanka și haiku. Și Ram Krishna Singh, om simplu, ființă sensibilă și fragilă, trăiește „durerile ce l-au țintuit”, plânge, suferă povestea umană, umanizatoare a lui Iisus Profetul, câteodată, în stare de

Ram Krishna Singh și/sau neliniștea poetică: Note de lector Nuredin Ibram sacralitate „rostește rugăciuni” și chiar dacă în lume dragostea, iubirea lipsește, nu se exprimă, speră „în viitor, în zile mai bune”.2 Poeziile și poemele, secvențele haiku, secvențele tanka și tanka propriu-zisă, haiku și senryu din ambele volume3 recapitulează ipostazele omului modest, simplu, neajutorat, vulnerabil, aflat în comuniune cu Natura, cu celălalt OM, cu Dumnezeul nenominalizat ce fac corp comun cu existența poetului.

Memoria trăirii este cea care-l duce pe Ram Krishna Singh la libertate și iluzie, la singurătate dar și la socializare, la fericirea instantaneelor, a clipelor dar și la extincție, la moarte.

Poetica lui Ram Krishna Singh traversează drumul de la uimire la mirare – separată de simpla opinie – la interogație, la întrebarea grea, dificilă, de multe ori fără răspuns clarificator. Pentru Ram Krishna Singh poezia este o stare specială a spiritului său iscoditor, o reverberație a existenței particulare a omului atent la nuanțele și logica trăirii, a sentimentelor de teamă, frică, grijă, bucurie, uneori de extaz față de natura primordială și de temutul Necunoscut.

Ca orice om, în mod firesc, cu o sinceritate deplină, poetul încearcă să „prindă” esențele, dar, vorba lui Platon din Dialogul „Fedru”, nu este ușor pentru toate sufletele să-mi reamintesc/să ne reamintim „lucrurile cerului în vederea lucrurilor pământului”.

La urma urmei, poetica lui Ram Krishna Singh este un exercițiu de maieutică socratică, este drumul sinuos, niciodată sfârșit spre un Adevăr pe care-l poartă în el, fără a-l putea cunoaște, exprim deplin și definitive. Căci: „Călătorind/descopăr dușmanii din interiorul șoaptelor liniștii din lipsa suflării slavă Domnului El este prezent în spațiile goale și mă pot întoarce de la margine către integralitate4”.

Meditația, studiul, implicarea emoțională, sentențele sunt armele poetului. Aceste căi îl duc la ascentism, la singurătate, și platonician la Ființă. Astfel că, pentru Ram Krishna Singh, Sinele nu are nimic comun cu istoricitatea, cu istoricitatea pe care o invocă, la care apelează, în care se mișcă. Poetul, în spiritul filosofiei sale, pare să spună, că orice experiență în lume 75

The 1st Annual Lecture on Exile in Comparative Literature and the Arts ALECLA 2018, 5-8 July, Constanta, Romania și în istorie este lipsită de validitate, că nu este obligatoriu retragerea din istorie, istoriei nu i se acordă, nu i se poate acorda o valoare absolută. Memoria selectivă, este foarte subiectivă, face corp comun cu „trăirea în lume” și ea foarte personală, inimitabilă.

Pentru Ram Krishna Singh, existența – cea personală – este o continuă încercare de eliberare de sub teroarea istoriei, o transgresare a temporalității profunde. Căci „Nimeni nu știe/când se va întuneca/sau când va ploua...”5, „timpul pierdut pe internet/urmărind din plin ceea ce nu am atins.../vise ce degradează vârsta în primăvară/căderea pare pare normală în lumea reală”6 .Cum altfel, „din când în când/și Dumnezeu picotește”7, El, Dumnezeu este „Necuvântător”, dar „cui îi pasă”8 de statutul meu?

Aici, în această lume reală, dar efemeră, trecătoare, înșelătoare, călătorind printre nuanțele palide ale vieți – aici, spune poetul – am întâlnit „adesea foarte buni vorbitori care/în față una spuneau și lăudau, iar în spate abuzau”/...„ în această viață toată lumea înșeală și încearcă să ia/totul fără a da nimic”, aici ...„îi văd pe nebuni înflorind și pe drepți suferind...”9 Aici, „relația umană este redusă la frică și pasiune”/ omul de care mă apropii nu mă vede, aici „îi strâng mâna și el nu mă simte/îi vorbesc și el nu aude”, aici „amicul meu nu-mi simte existența”. Aici „propriul meu suflet îmi detestă trupul/trupul nu-mi cunoaște sufletul/aici lumina este întuneric/aici viața a secat”, aici „eu plâng dar nimeni nu aude”10.

Aici, în spațiul gol, în care nimic nu e credibil, n-are sens, singura certitudine este precauția. Însă, spune poetul – gânditor, poetul – filosof, sau filosoful poet, gen marca „Lucian Blaga” al românilor, aici „nu pot trăi singur”, conștient fiind că sănătatea îmi face feste, corpul mă trădează, sunt vulnerabil, „aspirația și spiritul degradându-mi/iubirea, sănătatea și somnul”11, aici sunt manipulat chiar de „libertatea de a gândi, a căuta, a crea și a trăi”12. Și cum „nu sunt nici zeu, nici fiară”13, „nu sunt Iov sau Daniel”14, caut – neajutorat, cu obstinație – tihna, liniștea, pacea lor și „mă odihnesc în lumina soarelui”15. Și dacă nimeni nu știe, nu-mi comunică rostul existenței, de ce să nu mă bucur de „un bol de fructe”, de „deșteptarea lipsită de vise”16, de „briza toamnei”18, de „domnia carnală”18, de festivalul Chhat19 și, desigur, de chakra karmică „punctul culminant al iubirii/speranța vizionară, înțelepciunea/povestea neajutorării”20, atitudine și gestică a rugăciunilor credinței cu picioarele încrucișate.21 Ram Krishna Singh este un observator atent, un analist profund al celor șapte virtuți prezente în tradiția hindusă Credința, Cumpătarea, Dragostea, Dreptatea, Inteligența, Speranța și Tăria Sufletească și al celor șapte puncte energetice sacre, a șapte centrii subtili de forță, numite „chakra”. Constatările poetului, de genul „anii ce trec/străzi aglomerate/fețe bătute de soartă/”22, „ploaia neîntreruptă/mă ia prizonierul facebook-ului/sunt plictisit de viață/”23, „soarele dimineții/mângăie moale/trandafirul roșu”/24 „miez de noapte/învăluit de singurătate/ca fuga unui vis”/25, „dimineața înnorată/pe drumul principal/gonesc visele”26, „în spatele grilajului/la apus de soare un bărbat îngenuncheat/într-un scaun cu rotile”/27 și

Ram Krishna Singh și/sau neliniștea poetică: Note de lector Nuredin Ibram multe altele, sunt urmate de sentențe, de vorbe de duh, de învățăminte, de tipul: „dragostea/strângere de mână, capul acoperit/saltea de rugăciune”/28; „între file/vise ascunse/miere sărată”/29; „un poem/în frumusețea ta/lumina iubirii”/30; „răni/nevindecate de ani-/nopți mai lungi”/31; „sentimentul unirii/cu apa din căușul mâinilor:/Diogene”/32 și altele creionează crezul ideatic – estetic al lui Ram Krishna Singh, exprimă inteligența, acuratețea, precizia și concizia spunerilor sale, în cheie poetică-umanistă, modernă. și, modest, de o modestie absolută, Ram Krishna Singh spune: „sub umbră/vorbind de haiku/sunt un ageamiu”33.

Personal, mi l-am închipuit pe Ram Krishna Singh ca un om meditator, sfătos, așezat, echilibrat, ca un înțelept „fascinant de mistere”34, care „își șterge fața ridată/sub o umbrelă/un învățat”/35. Resemnat în fața incertitudinilor vieții „ce înseamnă secătuire zilnică”36, singur cu gândurile și interogațiile sale, Ram Krishna Singh este un veritabil Buddha, calm, ce meditează în stare de sacralizare, „plângând pentru noi”37, la desăvârșirea lăuntrică a spiritului. Iar imaginea de pe coperta lucrării „Desăvârșire lăuntrică”, inclusiv portretul, în lumini și umbre – al poetului gânditor, portret realizat de artistul plastic de etnie tătară Ferodin Iaia, confirmă această ipostază.

Un ecou al spiritualității indiene în cultura română o găsim, de pildă, la Mihai Eminescu „omul deplin al culturii romîne” (Constantin Noica), genialul nostru poet, visând la odihna stingerii în Nirvana, la istoricul religiilor și literatul Mircea Eliade, indianist de excepție, autor al unor lucrări fundamentale despre Yoga, dar și al celebrului roman „Maitreyi”, în frescele de la Voroneț, unde figurile de sfinți așezați pe lotuși-copacul sfânt indian-amintesc de poziția și statura spirituală a lui Buddha și a altor figuri și zeități din sculpturile și miniaturile indiene.

Traseul inițiatic al conturării personalității poetice a lui Ram Krishna Singh trece prin atașamentul de lucrări, de obiecte și fenomene ale naturii, prin iubirea de ființe și om, prin credința în mistere, dar și în „Marele Anonim” cum ar fi spus Lucian Blaga, prin developarea Eului ca etape necesare și obligatorii pentru conturarea Uitării de sine.Am senzația că Ram Krishna Singh este, devine un percepător, oarecum detașat al tabloului poetic, al „teatrului” în multe acte pe care-l conturează. De parcă, în această poveste, în această întreprindere, nu ar fi implicat.

Este în poetica lui Ram Krishna Singh – construită cărămidă cu cărămidă –o subtilă îmbinare obiectiv-subiectiv, necesar – întâmplător, real – ireal, fantastic, iluzoriu.

Contemporaneitatea poeticii lui Ram Krishna Singh rezultă, nu doar, sau nu numai din textura „istorisirilor” sale, din conținutul emoțiilor, trăirilor, din gândurile, din perenele semne de întrebare ce și le pune – referitoare la determinările biologice, psihologice și sociale, la sensul existenței în general, al existenței personale în particular - ci și din structura poeticii sale.

The 1st Annual Lecture on Exile in Comparative Literature and the Arts ALECLA 2018, 5-8 July, Constanta, Romania Structural, calea regală a poeticii lui Ram Krishna Singh este exprimată prin dubla articulație de înlănțuiri scrise și vorbite, constituite simultan din moneme – ca unități minimale de semnificație - și foneme ca unități minimale de sunet (Louis Martinet).

Limbajul poetic utilizat este seducător, limpede și curgător, flexibil dar și precis. Ram Krishna Singh are priceperea și talentul să ne facă să pricem aluzii – nu puține - și să întrevedem umbrele și luminile experienței sale de viață și poetice, căci „gândurile suferinde de neliniștea poetică sunt ca o minge de cristal” (Poetic Disturbance).

Consider că tipul de adevăr al poveștii de autodescifrare a Eului este interminabil, este ceva ce lucrează etern și eficient în poezia – filosofică și/sau filosofia poetică a foarte înzestratului autor, care este Ram Krishna Singh.
