Wives of diplomats in Burkina Faso mobilize CFAF 9 million

W

ives of diplomats accredited to Burkina Faso mobilized an amount of CFAF 9,626,700 during a gala dinner organized on the occasion of the highlevel Forum on funding of the water and sanitation sector, held from 5 to 8 December. The funds collected will be spent, with the expertise of the intergovernmental Agency water and sanitation for Africa (formerly CREPA), on ensuring access to water and sanitation facilities for inhabitants of a village in Burkina Faso.

and management of the public sector; • Strengthen mutual responsibility in actions of the sector; • Request for greater prioritization in future budgets; • Demand specific budget lines for sanitation and hygiene; • Collaborate with the WSA with a view to accompanying countries in the formulation and implementation of water and sanitation policies favourable for the poor and establishment of enterprises. Recommendations for the high-level Meeting on Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) Commitments made by the ministers: • Support the participative process of preparation of the high-level meeting to ensure that Africa’s voice will be largely heard ; • Dialogue with the institutions and get involved in the process at the national level to give greater priority to the water and sanitation sector; • Approach other sectors with a view to strengthening inter-sector links; • Encourage the mobilization of resources; • Give to the sector a strong leadership and clearly define the roles and responsibilities; • Improve governance of the sector and integrity in its management; • Develop a single sectoral plan for implementa-

tion of clearly defined policies; • Promote a dynamic and transparent coordination of the sector; • Undertake annual review and monitoring processes ; • Ensure equity and good targeting of the poor; • Accompany the processes of the sector at the international level; • Implement the main commitments made in the sector. Recommendations for the 6th World Water Forum • Incorporate water and sanitation into the humanitarian and development systems ; • Enhance the role of national planning systems that facilitate the consideration of NGOs, donors, the private sector; • Integrate into local organizations the financing of water and sanitation services through fees and tariffs ; • Achieve self-sufficiency in natural resources on which it will be possible to levy taxes; • Reduce administrative costs with a view to allocating more resources to projects; • Involve civil society organizations (CSOs) to ensure the assumption of responsibility at the grassroots level; • Improve the monitoring-evaluation systems.
