LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

For our first ever issue of our KiraKira Magazine, we were unsure of what our main focus of our magazine would be We contemplated on interviewing people on the street about their fashion, interviewing thrift store owners, making an article about popular stores, and the list goes on. Ultimately, we decided to focus on covering the basics of thrifting in Tokyo and recent fashion trends

Each of our "Trend" articles focus on a different trend in fashion: why these trends have become popular and how. We also have an additional article of the TikTok fashion trends. These articles were written based off our writers experience with trends as well as with data and research of recent trends in fashion.

Our main article, or the cover story of our magazine however is the "Guide to Thrifting" This article covers 4 of the best thrifting spots in Tokyo. We came up with this topic as our main focus to our magazine as we all enjoy thrifting in our pastime, and we also wanted to let people know where are the good places to thrift at, for both new time thrifters as well as those who came from abroad

This is all of our team's first ever magazine publication, and we hope that it meets your satisfaction. As lovers of fashion, we hope to share and educate our readers on the fashion trends and the fashion in Tokyo

Trends change as societal standards change: is that the same for the trend of the mermaid skirt?

Trend: Mermaid Skirt

A mermaid skirt is a long skirt that is tight -fitting from the waist to below the knee and flaring out at the bottom. This type of skirt is a trend in Japan and most women especially those in their 20s are wearing mermaid skirts. The tendency of Japanese women choosing to wear mermaid skirts ties into the body image that they or the society has. Since most women try to make themselves look thin, they choose to wear skirts that make them

KiraKira|34

look skinnier or more stylish than their actual body shape.

A survey conducted by MERY, one of the popular online shops in Japan revealed that "70% of people are aware of the existence of body type analysis, and about 30% said they had actually been analyzed"

Fashion is a trend, style lives within a person.

So the online demand for people buying mermaid skirts is increasing,

Other than online stores, mermaid skirts can easily be purchased at a store like GU, a Japanese discount casual wear store.

Mermaid skirt attracts the younger generation because it is breathable, easy to walk in, and shapes your body.

Since it can be worn throughout the season, buyers can enjoy different designs and textures of mermaid skirts.
