2012 Annual Report

KIPS BAY BOYS & GIRLS CLUB 2012 ANNUAL REPORT “Keep on keepin’ on.” The words are from Bob Dylan’s evocative song “Tangled Up In Blue.” The lyrics begin: “The only thing I knew how to do was keep on keepin’ on …” I came to Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club in 1996. Recently, writing to our long-time property manager to thank him for a gift, I reflected on the projects we have worked on together over 17 years: renovation of the Palmaro Clubhouse, building the ice rink, the air-supported dome, the Frederic R. & Margaret Coudert Clubhouse, and projects still in the works. This work does not get old; and the reason it doesn’t is the contribution that we make every day, throughout the year, to thousands of youngsters. Portrayed throughout this report are youngsters who attend Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club today. They are the reason that our staff, voluntary leadership, as well as all of you in the Kips Bay family, “keep on keepin’ on.” THANK YOU SO MUCH. Daniel Quintero Lucile Palmaro Clubhouse May 2013

For 25 years we have happily hosted youngsters, including these girls from nearby St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf who are greeted in sign language by other club members whom have learned, on their own, to sign words of welcome.

SERVING IN HOMELESS SHELTERS

In 1998 Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club led the National Movement into year-round programming at homeless shelters. We are still in the two original shelters, fulfilling our mission to “enhance the quality of life for all young people, ages 6 to 18, with special emphasis on those who need us most.

MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club is to improve and enhance the quality of life for all young people, ages 6 to 18, with special emphasis on those who need us most. Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club exists to assist as many young people as possible to realize and achieve their potential for growth and development, and to attain the skills necessary to live and succeed in a complex world.

Our organization has received the highest rating as a 4-star organization by Charity Navigator. We are proud of this accomplishment and will continue to provide the best quality services to our community.

President's Message

Redecorating the Landscape of our Youth Dear Friends, Patrons and Participants: I am honored and delighted to greet you, for the second time, as President of the Board of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. I initially became acquainted with Kips Bay through our signature special event, the Decorator Show House, and then later on with the work, the day-to-day activities and the mission of the Boys & Girls Club. As my knowledge and appreciation of the organization grew, I was happy to accept an invitation to join the Board of Trustees in 2001. Today, I am happier still, and certainly much more aware of the magnitude of what we do for more than 12,000 children and young people each year. Through your support of the President’s Dinner, the Show House, golf outings, theater parties and general contributions, you too, support everything that we do for the youth of the Bronx. We provide year-round services to children in two homeless shelters – the first organization in the Boys & Girls Movement to do so. We opened the Frederic R. & Margaret Coudert Clubhouse in 2010 in the West Bronx Heights – the first Boys & Girls Club ever in this large, needy and geographically distinct urban strip. Among the many other programs, we offer education assistance, civic and leadership activities, sports and performing arts, work experience, and healthy living instruction. This list is merely a portion of what we plan and accomplish each year. It is with all of that in mind that I present the enclosed financial statement of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2012. Thank you so much,

James P. Druckman President P.S.

A WORTHY PASSION

Several years ago an article by Elizabeth Armstrong in the Christian Science Monitor caught our attention. She cited research that looked for constants in the lives of teenagers who avoided drug use and were achievers. A critical common element was that these youngsters had a “worthy passion. Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club is a place for any child to find a worthy passion.

WE SERVE IN SCHOOLS CS 67, PS 140 & 304, & MS 101

Since the early 1990’s we have taken our mission into public schools, including some of the lowest performing schools in the Bronx. Our Outcome Measurement Report for 2012 revealed that, without exception, youngsters in our school-based programs outperformed their grade-level peers in the school as a whole. Above you see a typical homework help class at CS 67, and a scene from that school’s 2012 culmination activity for summer day camp.

SUMMER DAY CAMP A WORKING SINGLE PARENT’S BEST FRIEND

With more than 50% of our children coming from single-parent households, summer day camp is an absolute necessity!

FROM SELF-CONSCIOUS FIRST STEPS TO POISED PERFORMING AMBASSADORS

Pictures do tell the story. For 30 years Kips Bay has maintained a unique-in-the-Bronx performing arts program. Top photo is from our annual dance recital and revue that we call “Broadway Babies.” Lower photo shows the K-Company performing for the New Jersey Nets.

EDUCATION LEADS

We strive to make Kips Bay an education haven where any youngster can read a book, learn technology, research a paper on the internet, make a virtual college visit, receive tutoring, etc., etc., etc.

EMILY

Meet Emily Castro, age 10, who is the first Kips Bay swimmer to make the United States Junior Olympic squad for the NY Metro area, doing so in the 50 yard backstroke. Her goal is the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. “How do you get to Rio?” Emily was asked. Her response was, “Practice!”, which Emily does for 2 hours every day at her Club.

IN MEMORIAM

RICHIE RAMIREZ

He was Tony in our production of West Side Story in 1988, and our drama instructor for 25 years. He faced down life-threatening illness for years, and made us and audiences across the country laugh about it in his comedy act. He taught, mentored and inspired hundreds of Kips Bay youngsters over the years. Godspeed Richie.

Executive Director’s Message

outcomes propel the mission Greetings and welcome to the 17th edition of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Annual Report. Over the years, we have expanded to an amazing 10 locations and 12,000 children served. Throughout this expansion, the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club has remained faithful to a mission created 98 years ago in the Kips Bay section of Manhattan. Increasing demands resulting from some of the societal issues our youngsters experience have significantly influenced our strategic expansion and subsequent accomplishments. Recently 200 young people 5 to 25 years old were surveyed to determine their opinions on what societal issues need to be addressed now. The top concerns were college affordability, gun control, hunger and education. Another study, centered on what our youth face today, revealed that 1 out of 5 children go hungry every day, 25% live in poverty and 2 out of 3 elementary and middle school students cannot read nor do math on grade level. I could go on and on about the dangers our children face daily, especially with respect to gun violence in our streets and drug activity in our community, but I think we all get it. These are the reasons we need to invest in the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. Kips Bay empowers, educates, feeds, provides a safe haven, builds self-esteem and prepares our children for a better tomorrow. Recently, Kips Bay conducted its own study of almost 300 youngsters that attended our club at least 3 times a week. Our data showed that youngsters attending the club on a regular basis out-performed youngsters in their respective schools and district-wide on 4th grade reading and math scores. We also sampled 50 high school seniors who were registered and attending the club for at least 3 years or more. We found that our seniors graduated high school at a far higher rate than their peers. Further, 60% went on to college, 20% entered employment training programs, and 16% are working or looking for work. These are the types of accomplishments Kips Bay is proud of and strives for continuously with our club members. We couldn’t do it without the help of our donors, supporters, volunteers and tremendous Board leadership. As a young man, I was fortunate enough to take advantage of the services and mentoring that Kips Bay offers. Now, as the Chief Professional Officer, my goal is to have as many children experience what I experienced as a child. As always, Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club remains committed to the future of our children and the communities we serve. Thank you so much for helping us achieve our mission.

OUR COMMUNITY RESPONDS

Every year in September we celebrate National Kids Day by hosting a street festival in front of our flagship Lucile Palmaro Clubhouse to launch fall enrollment and programming. Speakers and performers address the multitude from a moveable stage provided by the Parks Department. This photo is taken from that stage.

We came to the Bronx in 1969, leaving Manhattan’s East Side, in order to serve a population that had greater needs. We stayed and grew – expanding the Palmaro Clubhouse twice, adding services in the public schools, becoming the first Boys & Girls Club to operate in homeless shelters, building a sports complex, establishing Housing Authority sites, and securing a long-term lease to Camp Sebago in Harriman State Park, in addition to building the Frederic R. & Margaret Coudert Clubhouse in the West Bronx Heights. Most importantly, we connected with the people in each community that we came to. And the community responded – sending their children, and those children grew up and sent their children. Now we are getting the grandchildren of those first children who came to a nascent Palmaro Clubhouse, built on a White Plains Road that was not yet paved beyond our corner.
