IMAGES OF A DECADE Honoring

Daniel Quintero Executive Director KIPS BAY BOYS & GIRLS CLUB On December 6, 1996 Daniel Quintero, who attended Kips Bay as a youngster in the 1970s, walked into the Lucile Palmaro Clubhouse for the first time as Executive Director. On December 6, 2006, Dan’s colleagues honored him at the flagship Palmaro Clubhouse for a remarkable 10 years of service. Mr. Quintero has led an institution—already acclaimed as one of

the premier Boys & Girls Clubs in the nation— during a remarkable era of mission growth: From four service locations and 5,559 Club Members in 1996, to 10 locations and more than 13,000 youngsters enrolled in 2006. Here are just a few images from Daniel Quintero’s first ten years as Chief Professional Officer of Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club.

Dan led the national movement to bring Boys & Girls Club services to homeless shelters. In 1998, Kips Bay began on-site programming at two HELP shelters. Here, in 2002, Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion (center) and Boys & Girls Clubs of America VP Glen Staron (far right) help inaugurate a Metlife Learning Center at HELP Crotona Park North.

Education for digital literacy became widely available throughout our programming locations during the decade.

Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion was in attendance for Dan’s 2004 announcement that a graffiti-covered abandoned building at 1835 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. will become our future West Bronx Clubhouse.

Power of the card! These residents from one of School District 8’s homeless shelters receive their membership cards during a special winter recess program called “Studio in the Bay.” Created in 1998, “Studio” continues in 2007, serving youngsters from a dozen shelters.

Fritz and Marge Coudert cut ribbon for the Frederic R. Coudert Sports Complex domed athletic field in 2002.

In November 2001, we honored our local 9/11 first responders and relatives with our emotional tribute at the Palmaro Clubhouse.

Andre Barrett, at 5’ 9”, was MVP in 20 Kips Bay basketball tournaments, excelled at Rice High School, starred at Seton Hall and currently plays in the NBA.

New York Yankees’ Bernie Williams visited often, stayed late, and graciously answered club members’ questions.

Youngsters examine marine life at Fritz and Marge Coudert’s annual summer outing to historic Oyster Bay.

Girl of the Year (in 1998) Maggie Velez (l.) welcomes Olympic Gold Medalist Tara Lipinski.

SCUBA is one of the many unique activities that Kips Bay has offered in its wide ranging youth-development curriculum.

In the weeks after 9/11 Dan Quintero held impromptu conversations with youngsters to help them comprehend the unimaginable.

Junior staff is both a teen program and a real salaried job. Here junior staffer Elizabeth Baez assists a youngster in the Homework Help program.

Alberto Cruz (l.) and Clarence Leggett pose on stage at the George Street Playhouse after a performance of “Twist” in 1996. Alberto had title role; Clarence played Yancy.

Lillian Quinones enjoys the Bronx’ only ice rink, part of the Frederic R. Coudert Sports Complex at the Palmaro Clubhouse.

K-Company, shown in 1999, delighted audiences from Washington State, to Canada, to Florida, to Puerto Rico to Bronx Street fairs.

In 1997, a youthful Derek Jeter signs auction items during a clubhouse visit. Jeter’s “Turn 2 Foundation” has supported us since 1996. (Dan looked younger then too.)

Joe Torre launched his “Safe at Home Foundation,” which fights domestic violence, at Kips Bay in 2005.

A sleeves-rolled-up Mayor Bloomberg, who has been very generous to Kips Bay, visited in 2005.

These youngsters, in summer 2006, were among the first to enjoy Camp Sebago, our 10th and newest service site.

New York Mets slugging first baseman Carlos Delgado reached out to us in 2006, and one day later gave us $25,000!

In 2000, Fritz Coudert (center) succeeded Arthur Rogers (right) as President.

Polly Fownes (right) and Sarah Woolworth are examples of the wonderful voluntary leadership that has sustained Kips Bay over generations.

(l. to r.) Paul Ross, Cynthia Coudert, Eileen and Curtis Minnis are a few of the reasons why our special events continue to provide a vital financial base for Kips Bay’s mission growth in the past decade.

Manny Villafana (left), with Maribel Quintero, began his Kips Bay career at age 9 when he traveled from his house in the South Bronx to our last Manhattan clubhouse.

(l. to r.) Brian Flaherty, Judge Leslie Crocker Snyder, and Gary Crain—more of the shoulders upon which the good work of Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club stands.

Recognizing accomplishment builds character and selfconfidence. Here Dan poses with 1997 Youth of the Year winners, Russell Johnson and Maggie Velez.

And the media came…but did not overly impress the young ladies of “The Bay.”

We thank you, our generous donors and friends, who make our mission possible.

Won’t you give a young person Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club for a year?

(l. to r.) Denise St. Just, Daniel Quintero, Nelson Gerena.

Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club remains a bargain. Approximately $600 gives Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club to a youngster for one year. We’ll do our best to help them to flourish and become leaders, as Denise St. Just and Nelson Gerena have done. Nelson, our 2003 Youth of the Year, is a third year honors student in finance at Baruch College, while working part time at Standard & Poor’s. Denise is close to the top of her class at the elite CUNY Honors College, and a Mellon Fellow who plans a career in public-service law.

Help us build the future. PLEASE CALL ME Daniel Quintero 718-893-8600 ext. 240 daniel.quintero@kipsbay.org
