Welcome families!

My name is Khadijah Banks, and I attend KIPP Lanning Square Middle, where our goals as students are to be revolutionary, make a difference and do our best no matter our circumstances. Due to COVID-19, the past couple of years we’ve experienced some adversities and successes. A major struggle that my classmates and I had was learning online instead of in the classroom. When we returned to our classrooms this year, it brought me joy and some relief because I could finally interact with many different students and teachers. I would like to give a shout out to my teachers for creating an environment where I could grow, fight for my education, and strive to be the best I could be. I would like to welcome you to the student-led spring edition of TEAM and Family Magazine, in which students like me, families, and staff have shared their voices. The topics include: STUDENT GOVERNMENT LEADER REFLECTIONS This edition features two student government leaders at KIPP High School, Kevin Pellot and Aniyah Byers, on page 6. A SPOTLIGHT ON OUR FAMILIES Meet Ms. Fonseca, who goes above and beyond to support her school community at KIPP Lanning Square Primary on page 8. MENTAL HEALTH REFLECTIONS KIPP Whittier students worked together to present different perspectives on how their school supports mental health on page 10.

KIPP High School Student Leaders in the Spotlight Our KIPP High School student leaders are bringing their school community together and defining their vision for their futures, their city, and their school. Learn more about what motivated Kevin and Aniyah to become student leaders and their aspirations for the future.

Meet Kevin Pellot…

H about myself.

ello, my name is Kevin Pellot, and I’m a 10th grade member of the KIPP High School Student Council. I wanted to share my aspirations for our school and some things

I was inspired to join the Student Council because it provided an opportunity to speak out about what I would like to see in the current state and future of the school. My goal is to help support the staff by representing student view points. I want to help shape the school into an amazing community, socially and academically. Even when we don’t see eye to eye, I love it, because what can change without differing opinions? We all have different visions for the school, but the overall vision is to make it an amazing place for students to learn and have fun. Our student council has been planning multiple things, like events for Black History Month. Also, in the beginning of the year the Student Council helped plan fall festivals as well as a homecoming event. We also did reflections on these events to see what we could improve in future events. My vision for the school is a well-balanced community that demonstrates school spirit. I feel it's very important to make school enjoyable. Our student council under our leadership matters to us because it is a place for students to share their thoughts. I genuinely believe that we all care about what happens in our school, and this is a community for all of us! We are currently reviewing our school policies and gathering student opinions on them just to see how we could make them a bit better for us. I do believe that we don't have a perfect set of school policies just yet, but we are definitely working on making them better! To be real with you, I want to be able to tell people in the future that I had an amazing high school experience—one where I found a home. Beauty lies in the hands of our voice and our goals for the future of our school. Kevin Pellot signing out!

…& Aniyah Byers!

H

ello, KIPP New Jersey families! My name is Aniyah Byers, and I am a ninth grade Student Council member at KIPP High School.

Some people doubt us and shake their heads at us because we’re from Camden or judge us based on looks, but all of our students are capable of proving the outsiders totally wrong.

What inspired me to run for student government was seeing opportunities to improve our school’s culture and wanting to be a part of that change. Specifically, I wanted to work to improve relationships between staff and students. Also, I wanted to take on a leadership role in our community. I’ve been involved in shaping the school by running for student council, winning student council, and bringing along ideas to improve our school community. I contributed towards the planning of our Black History Month Spirit Week, which included a door decorating competition between advisory classes. Additionally, I have been actively communicating with my fellow peers on what they like and dislike about our school.

Student leadership matters to me because I’ve always been the student to voice my opinions, but sometimes, adults don’t listen to them. There are a lot of other students like me at my school who voice how they feel, and I want them to know that they are heard. I want my school to be honorable and appreciated when I graduate. Some people doubt us and shake their heads at us because we’re from Camden or judge us based on looks, but all of our students are capable of proving the outsiders totally wrong. In my future, I definitely want to go to college. I hope to either be a lawyer or a real estate agent. To me leadership plays a big role in this because I’ll be the first person in my family to go away for college; my brother Carter even asked if he could come with me when I go! This is really important to me because it’s something that I always wanted to accomplish. I want to be a role model for all my younger siblings. 7

e are grateful to all of our families for their work to keep our students on-track academically and emotionally this year. Ms. Fonseca, whose daughter Ana is a fourth grader at KIPP Lanning Square Primary, is just one of the many family members who goes the extra mile to support both her daughter’s education and her school community. KIPP Lanning Square Primary teacher, Arielle Bragg, knows about Ms. Fonseca’s dedication firsthand. “She’ll meet up with a translator and she always tells us what she needs as a parent. She really takes ownership of every aspect of her daughter’s education,” said Bragg.

Ms. Fonseca chose the KIPP Lanning Square Primary community because of its proximity to her home—and because she felt teachers were accessible and communicative. “Teachers play an important role in the lives of our children. We leave our children at school every day in the morning and they spend so much of their day with their teachers. I like that at KIPP if Ana has any problems, they’re always calling us right back to help solve it,” she said. "I see She’ll meet up with a translator and she a difference between the education Ana always tells us what she needs as a parent. is getting and the education being given She really takes ownership of every aspect in her home country of Puerto Rico,” said Ms. Fonseca.

of her daughter’s education.

According to Bragg, Ms. Fonseca also supports the school in offering her feedback, ideas, and appreciation to support the community. “She sends us appreciation letters sometimes, and during the pandemic, she would tell us what she liked and disliked about different types of technology we were using, like preferring Peardeck over Nearpod,” said Bragg, who also shared that Fonseca attends family game nights and meetings. —A RIELLE BRAGG KIPP Lanning Square Primary Teacher

Fonseca also goes out of her way to connect with other Spanish-speaking members of the community and makes sure she and other families have the information they need to support their children. “There’s another parent who helps me get information about things that are going on in the school, and then I’ll send that information to parents I know so that they can be involved as well,” said Fonseca. “It’s an important way to support the school community.” 8

KIPP Lanning Square Primary parent Ms. Fonseca

It’s important for students like us to stay mentally healthy. I do that by listening to music, playing on my trampoline, and practicing self-care. —H AYLEY CAST ELAN -BELLO 10

M

y name is Hayley Castelan-Bello, and my friend Sanai Chambliss and I recently had the chance to ask questions about mental health to members of our school community at KIPP Whittier Middle.

I think it’s important for students like us to stay mentally healthy. I do that by listening to music, playing on my trampoline, and practicing self-care.

IN MY SCHOOL COMMUNITY

My counselor, Mrs. Brown, helps me with this, too. I can talk to her about anything, like what I need to accomplish at school or even my fears. She always gives me tips to accomplish my goals.

Here are some reflections from other members of our KIPP Whittier Middle community.

Ricky Lee

PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER I believe physical wellness supports mental wellness (also vice-versa) because research and studies have shown that physical health/exercise has helped with people's moods, their anxiety levels, their overall perception of themselves, and many of the social and emotional learning domains. The body and mind are connected, so having wellness in both areas helps promote selfworth, self-esteem and overall confidence, which I think are really important. In school, students need to acquire the social and emotional learning skills that will allow them to succeed in life. Doing so allows students to get beyond the misguided perception that mental health struggles are associated with shame. My physical education class is fundamentally built upon promoting students' mental wellness in how they relate to themselves, their peers, and staff. The first thing I make clear in my class is that students will respect me as their teacher, but every student in my class deserves the same respect back. The essence of a PE class is not the best athlete or the best at sports—the essence of PE class is to teach social and emotional learning skills that students can use in all aspects of their life, from childhood through adulthood. 11

Taylor Wegmann SOCIAL WORKER

As a social worker, I support students’ mental health in many ways. I check in with them when they are having a tough day and also regularly provide counseling to students who need that support. The best way I can help students is by giving them a space to talk about how they are feeling. This year as we resumed in-person learning, a lot of students had a tough time getting back to the longer school day, as our virtual day allowed for more breaks throughout the day. Learning at home was also cozier because students could learn from their sofas or in their pajamas! Coming back to school in person was a big change, and this definitely created more stress for students this year. I love being able to work with students at Whittier and help them find ways to stay mentally well. Mental health awareness is very important to me and I love having a job where I can help others learn more about themselves. To stay mentally healthy, I like to exercise, spend time with my friends and family, and read! I also make sure to get plenty of sleep and eat healthy foods.

Teacher Robi ART TEACHER

I support student mental health on a daily basis by offering social emotional learning lessons that talk about topics such as bullying, making friends, mental health and many others. I also talk to students on a regular basis about what is “filling their bucket” vs. what is “emptying their bucket.”

Sometimes students struggle to express how they feel with words, and I use my art class to give students the opportunity to express themselves. —T E ACH E R RO BI Art Teacher 12

Students should know what’s making them happy and fulfilling their needs vs. what they could do without. Sometimes students struggle to express how they feel with words, and I use my art class to give students the opportunity to express themselves. Using the curriculum I created about the elements of art, students are able to explore the different elements like shape, line and color to express their emotions and feelings. For example, we do a quadrilateral shape project where students learn about different shapes and put them together to create a robot that represents them with colors and shapes. Some students really like coming to art class so they can express themselves and create new masterpieces. Teaching during the pandemic has been one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, especially coming back to school after a year of students being home. I have been able to cope with losing family and friends by diving into my work and finding the joy in my classroom as much as possible. I love my job and being a non-binary art teacher has really played a huge role in my mental health and the ability for me to have an open and inclusive classroom.
