The best thing about Legacy is the opportunities they provide for us! I feel like the team pours into us lots of praises. They acknowledge us and allow us to be authentic. Some of the great opportunities are the Honor Society and the connection with OSSE.”
–Onesti Hill, Class of 2024
KIPP DC Legacy College Preparatory offers a continuum of services to support our students with special education needs. Our practices are consistent with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Our goal is to provide all students with special education needs with the same curriculum and to be educated with their nondisabled peers. Legacy College Preparatory also houses a program, the Legacy Learning Center, which supports students who are in need of more intensive special education support.
Whether it is student government or spoken word poetry, there is an activity at Legacy College Prep for you. COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS
College & Career Counseling
The college counseling program at Legacy begins during freshman year to ensure that 100% of students are college and career ready. Legacy maintains a low student-to-counselor ratio so that every student has access to individualized support throughout the postgraduate application process. Every Legacy senior takes a course called “College & Career Counseling’’ that ensures all seniors create and begin to implement their post-graduation plans. The college counseling team empowers families in this process by providing workshops to help them navigate admissions and plan for the cost of college.
University of District of Columbia Dual Enrollment Course
KIPP DC’s partnership with University of District of Columbia provides current Legacy seniors with the opportunity to take a college-level course at no cost. This helps them earn college credit while gaining real-life college experience that prepares them for their journey after high school.
Advanced Placement Classes
Advanced Placement Classes (AP) allow students to take college-level classes on campus. These classes are taught by Legacy teachers and delivered with the rigor of a traditional college course. At the end of the year, students take the AP test to earn college credit.
CareerWise
Legacy’s partnership with CareerWise DC offers a three-year applied-learning environment for Legacy students and an innovative talent-acquisition strategy for businesses. With an apprenticeship, students earn debt-free college credit and nationally-recognized industry certifications through meaningful work experience in the IT, financial services, and business operations fields–all while graduating on-time.
NAF Academy
The NAF Academy of IT aims to ignite students’ passions for learning and prepare them for future college pathways and/or careers of their choosing, specifically related to the Information Technology (IT) industry. From sophomore through senior year, students take IT-based elective courses and gain real-world experience through work-based learning and college and career-readiness opportunities.
Honors Program
Legacy’s Honors program will offer a group of select 9th grade students a more rigorous curriculum in order to challenge them academically, prepare them for Advance Placement and Dual Enrollment classes, and, ultimately, prepare them for a strong post-high school experience.
Alumni Support
KIPP DC’s KIPP Forward program, which is funded entirely by private donations, supports all Legacy students and alumni throughout their journey to and through high school, college, and as they enter the workforce. A team of experienced advisors supports KIPP DC students and alumni by offering a mix of personalized programs, services, and individual counseling. The KIPP Forward team currently supports more than 2,500 KIPP DC students and alumni as they build the character traits, self-advocacy, and decision-making skills needed to graduate from college.
College Partnerships
KIPP Forward’s programming leverages resources provided by the national KIPP network. These include access to a wide range of professional development opportunities, national college partnerships, and a College Ambassadors program that connects KIPPsters from across the country who are attending the same college. Partner universities commit to not only admitting Legacy students, but also to providing critical resources once those students are on campus, as well as giving them the opportunity to participate in summer pre-college programs. Current KIPP college partners include Duke University, University of Pennsylvania, Tulane University, Lycoming College, Franklin & Marshall College, Syracuse University, Morehouse College, Spelman College, and many more.
College & Career Team
After high school, KIPP Forward is there to ensure every Legacy alumnus the resources and skills they need to attain a college degree and meet their career goals. The KIPP Forward team builds strong relationships with the universities that KlPPsters attend; counsels alumni about financial aid, course selection, and career paths; and provides access to important on- and off-campus resources. Programs and support offered by the College & Career team include:
• College transition and orientation workshops
• College campus visits
• Financial aid nights
• Financial planning
• Transportation support
• Parent empowerment programs
• One-on-one support
• Monthly check-ins
