THE YEARBOOK 2022

A MESSAGE FROM THE Director

2022 is over - we are so grateful to the blessing of another year.

It has been quite the whirlwind - it seems that at last, we have come to the end of a very trying season that lasted 3 years! What a reminder that in life, nothing is permanent and, in the end, all things work for good.

We’re so encouraged with the progress and milestones that we have achieved and for your steadfast support, as we cross over to 2023, Kiota School enters it’s tenth year of existence. We are humbled by our journey so far, from a student population of 9 to 900. God has indeed been faithful; this verse has inspired me as I contemplate our journey so far.

Philippians 1:6 “…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

And what a journey it has been - this year saw another first, Kiota Junior Secondary and Cambridge Section launch. We are moving onwards and upwards and with your support we will go far together. The Kiota Team continues to inspire me, with their warmth, dedication and diligence. The children continue to grow and we cherish the time we have with them. They are the reason we exist; they are our hope and the world we are shaping really belongs to them, it is our duty to leave it in a better state than we found it. Remember “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children”

As we approach Christmas, I am reminded of our theme this term of “Love” - Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.

Wishing you a season full of never-ending love and happiness.

Emma Miloyo-Naicca

A MESSAGE FROM THE Head of School

Greetings Kiotans!

What a whirlwind year 2022 has been. We have had lots of experiences to write several volumes about!

From the start of the year, each term (all 4 of them!), has had various events and activities for both children and adults. These include but not limited to, Parenting sessions, Nanny trainings, Swimming Galas, Sports Days, Christmas Cantatas, Curriculum expose’s, Open Days and many others. We celebrate everyone who participated in one way or another to making these events successful.

Now after all has been said and done, the year is winding down to a close. And so before the curtain falls, allow me to raise (an imaginary) glass and say:

A toast to you parents – for allowing us to be a part of your lovely children’s lives. They are stars in our eyes and we are honored to have them at Kiota School. Thank you all.

A toast to the children – they have continued to show growth, resilience, creativity and their hard work is highly commended. All of us dote and fuss over them as they are our pride and joy.

A toast to all our external suppliers and facilitators – your supportive roles at our school can never be down played. You are appreciated and valued.

A toast to all the Staff at Kiota School – My ‘dream team’! I am privileged to be your leader. You all – in your individual ways make my day every day. Thank you for your efforts, hard work and dedication. The Lord is your rewarder and I value all of you.

A toast to the directors – Our team Captains! You steer this ship well! You are greatly loved and respected by all of us. Thank you for your hard work and efforts – it is not in vain. May God continue to bestow you more grace and wisdom.

Special thanks to the Almighty God – for helping us see another year through. We cannot take it for granted. We owe it all to Him. May He provide each of us with a safe and love-filled festive season and enable us to cross over to the new year with renewed hope and energy.

Finally, I wish you all a beautiful Christmas and a fantastic new year.

Ms.Jenny

WORD FROM THE Karen Campus

It’s the end of yet another year, and as the Psalmist wrote, The Lord has done great things for us and we are filled with joy! It is such a delight to be through with the recovery School Terms, and we look forward to our normal Three Terms a year.

This year saw us going back to how life was before restrictions. We especially enjoyed our electrifying events: - Swimming Galas, Sports Days, Football Trainings, Trips, Research Presentations, Christmas Cantatas and our Eagle Nest Graduations. Our children showed us their skills and talents much to our delight. This year also saw our children in the Primary school demonstrate their Democratic freedom, when they voted for their school leadership. The secret ballot elected the School President, Deputy President and House Captains. The leaders graciously took up their roles through the year.

We are thankful that this year, our Karen Campus has shared our vision with children up to Grade 5, and we are confident that we are making the world a better place, one child at a time.

I am grateful to everyone that has walked this journey with us. Parents, thank you for entrusting your precious gems to us. Children, thank you for allowing us into your lives. Kiota staff, thank you for sharing your talents and making each day special. Our suppliers and partners, thank you for all you do. And To Our Heavenly Father, Thank you for the many blessings and miracles that we can’t even count.

And it’s that time, the most wonderful time of the year. May this Holiday Season sparkle and shine and may all your wishes and dreams come true.

Merry Christmas

WORD FROM THE Kasuku Campus

As we come to the end of another extraordinary school year, I would like to start by saying how incredibly proud I am of our whole school family for the continued energy, resilience and passion with which students, staff (both teaching and nonteaching) and the parents altogether approached this year. Whilst we have had needed to approach many things differently within the year, we have certainly not stood still and there is much to celebrate across the school as we have witnessed the creativity and determination of our students and staff throughout this year.

I begin by pointing out the energy and team work exercised by the teaching staff in planning and executing the curriculum meant for a full school year in less than seven months. Not forgetting the countless meetings we did to learn, re-learn, plan and re-plan as we looked for the best ways to work the routine out. I would proudly say it all looked better and doable after every meeting.

Putting all the learners on a tight schedule that meant adjusting of their early morning and evening timings was not a walk in the park. And I say, Kudos to the teaching staff, the administration and the support staff altogether.

Through good times and bad times, we’ve found new ways to show our love and support in our classrooms. We’ve found pockets of joy and overcome challenges with our students to cross the finish line together. And here we are bidding good bye to year 2022!

As once said by one Beau Taplin, “Sunsets are proof that endings can be beautiful”, the end of this year proved to us that we are more than conquerors. Success does not mean you show up with a big task accomplished within a period of time but to us at kiota School I would confidently say that our success is pegged on the sum total of the small things that we have been doing over the years which make Kiota school unique.

Learning is a process and at one point nature taught me that the students you are trying to inspire are the ones that end up inspiring you. This was so evident during our experiential learning processes like the CBC group and individual projects, research projects and Science fair. In the spirit of a Learnercentered approach to learning, students were given the opportunity to own their learning and express themselves through various planned presentations which included the few mentioned above coupled with musical narrations ranging from singing and performing to playing various musical instruments.

As we finalize the very last chapter of this year, I look forward to opening a new chapter of year 2023 full of greatness and favor from our Lord. Trusting that the Lord shall renew the strength of the entire Kiota Community, I take this earliest opportunity to wish you all the very best as we end this academic year and usher in a new one come January 2023. Merry Christmas to you all!

And the Year comes to an end…….

A MESSAGE FROM THE Guidance and Counseling Department

We are grateful to God for an amazing and fruitful academic year. As the guidance and counseling department, the mental wellness of the members of the Kiota family is our priority. The month of May being a global mental health awareness month was quite engaging for us at Kiota. The global theme was ‘’Back to basics” and as a school we focused on overcoming loneliness as one of the basics to strengthen mental wellness. Research has shown that it is possible to be isolated without feeling lonely and to feel lonely while surrounded by people. The children had the opportunity to reflect and creatively think how to overcome loneliness while enjoying solitude as a time to rest, reflect and journal.

One of our major highlights this year is that our children have been placed in small peer groups where they are assigned a mentor who supports in the overall welfare nurture of our children. This is a safe space for them to vent, experience accountability and mentorship while at Kiota and beyond.

The per-level mentorship sessions have also been quite productive. Our mentors have been very intentional in empowering the children with social and life skills such as resilience, self-awareness, kindness and respect, developing grit, coping with exam stress and anxiety and so much more.

Our staff have not been left behind. The guidance and counseling department supports strategies that promote mental health at work. To this end, the staff have been psycho-educated on coping with anxiety, collaboration and interpersonal skills to promote a positive work environment, emotional intelligence skills among others.

Transform Nations has been a great resource in training and empowering the parents with necessary skills to raise strong champions who will thrive in their gifting. The parenting forums have been an eye opener on how

to support children to effectively manage technology, effective parenting through various developmental stages and they have equipped our teachers on effective mentorship approaches.

It is our great delight to demystify counseling and for us at Kiota, seeing a counselor is as normal as seeing a doctor for a physical illness. The children have a safe space for one-on-one counseling sessions with the school counselor. Our commitment as the mental health department is to offer a nonjudgemental environment of empathy and to have unconditional positive regard for Kiota family that allows for effective individual and group therapy.

We are excited about the coming Academic year and are eager to support the Kiota family thrive in their social-emotional wellbeing.

Word From the ICT Department.

How time flies! Just the other day in May, we started the new academic year and now we have come to the end of it. We received new and additional students who were very curious to see what was in store in the computer labs.

This meant introducing and emphasizing computer rules to new and old students respectively. It also meant utilizing Google Classroom as a learning tool both in and out of class for Computer lessons and other learning areas. We were able to teach all we could from Technology, Internet to even Coding, in that period.

Each year we always aim to achieve Digital Literacy in the safest way possible and this year was no different. Emerging issues, especially internet safety have been a challenge. However, we have emphasized and will continue to ensure that we protect our children as they interact with technology.

As we break for the long holiday, we urge parents to help us ensure children use digital devices appropriately, manage screen time and remain safe.

Enjoy your holidays.

Music Department

This has been a year on a quick marathon. Despite the time constraints, the students have continued to exhibit results of strong-willed upcoming musicians. The consistency and commitment displayed is just amazing. The rush of time has however not left us empty handed. The students have utilized every moment provided in a creative and productive manner. Every larvae has graduated into a pupa. From single note players to melody makers, insecure book followers to players by ear, and from followers of musical instructions to content creators. Thumbs up to all students for their tremendous efforts in their specific musical learning areas. We look forward to the new year with new opportunities and chances of growth.

Merry Christmas!

Word From the French Department.

Bonjour á tous!

Je m’appelle Monsieur Simon Githinji. Here at Kiota School, and specifically the French department, we pride ourselves with the teaching and learning of French. The learners have gotten to interact with the language from a young age. This is advantageous to them because they easily grasp new language grammar and vocabulary. Over the past year we’ve been able to cover the curriculum as recommended by the Ministry of Education. These include topics like:

“Salutations” (Salutations)

“Les mots magiques” (magic words)”

Á l’ecole” (at school) , “La famille” ( the family),

“Nationalité” (nationality), “

Les repas” (meals and meal times), “Les instructions” ( instructions), just to mention a few.

The kindergarten have not been left out either. We have weekly lessons where they get acquainted with French before they get to primary school where they hit the ground running. The kiota child has gotten a wholesome French experience for their level and as the French say “la langue est la clé du monde”. Looking forward to a brighter 2023.

Au revoir!

Simon Githinji

This year has been a wonderful one, we have managed to enrich our menu with new delicious dishes and grateful that learners and all entire kiota family loved and enjoyed it. We have also paid keen attention to the learners with allergies

We are so grateful for the upgrade of our kitchen to high standard as we can now do our own pastries and all are enjoying the yummy fresh bread direct from our kitchen.

We have improved our hygiene standards on food handling. This has enabled us to have a smooth year health wise.

We look forward for another new year with many more delicacies.

And for our love to you all, we quote: “cooking is at once child’s play and adult joy. And cooking done with care is an act of love” by Craig Claiborne.

KIPAJI Skating

Iwould like to take this opportunity, on behalf of KIPAJI Skaters to appreciate the unending and immeasurable support we’ve gotten through the year that has been. Its been a journey of highs and lows but through the able and dedicated Kiota Staff and support staff we have seen to it a great and productive year for learners and also the coaching fraternity.

It is through this that we have managed to impact our students progress in matters skating, fitness and fun, positively. Skating being a fast growing sport in our country and moreso the entire world,KIPAJI family has adjusted accordingly inorder to accommodate the steadily growing demand in the said area. This year has seen more Coaches recruited, equiped with varying skills and ideas to instill to the learners, acquisition of state of the art equipment for us and also infusion of new techniques during sessions.

Areas of skill and character for our learners with a notable improvement are;

• Team Work

• Patience

• Emotional Intelligence

• Discipline

• Leadership Skills

Our Elite skating groups can comfortably demonstrate back-skating technique, cross overs and more than one braking technique. These among key other areas were the goals to be achieved this year.We are happy to have met a large part of it.

Ice Skating, being a distant cousin to roller blading was also incorporated during the year, this helped our learners have a different kind of exposure all together to better their skating and even social life as the sessions were very interactive and included learners who aren’t necessarily in the Skating Club.

Rolling into the new year we look to engage our learners in more interesting and educative models that will include introduction of Roll Ball and an initiative

to have Roller Hockey friendlies with other members schools so as to better individual and collective performance.

The Annual Skating Championship is also set to take place. This has always ensured determination, competitiveness and hardwork is rewarded . It’s also a good platform for learners to interact with their peers and exchange ideas through interaction and observation, they also have the opportunity to meet professionals through the Tournament.

We thank you for the continuous support and we are all looking forward to a Greater Year Together.

God Bless.

A competitive year at the Nest

What a competitive year it has been, the magic of physical sports activities has been reignited again! We started our first term with a lot of enthusiasm and had our termly u6 soccer friendlies with NIS where our kindergarten players got to interact and compete with each other both on our turf and outside. Our primary children also had a go with St.Mary’s school and did very well. We also resumed our termly golf at Race Course and soccer academy at the State House field trainings every Saturday where our kids improved their overall skills and even had a friendly match with other teams. There was also a parent’s match to boot!

We had a Primary Swimming gala event which was very competitive and our swimmers have shown great improvement overall. Mbuni house won again this year but with a stiff competition from Tausi House. Our parents vs. teachers had a go and this time the parents took the trophy.

We attended ripples swimming championships at riara school where our swimmers shined, we became 2nd best overall school in girls and 3rd best in boys; we also came in 3rd overall out of 9 schools as the best in the event bringing a trophy to school. We also participated at the ripples soccer tournament at impala sports ground where we won our first ever trophy for the best team u7 category versus other intercounty teams. We capped the term with a brilliant performance at the swim Africa sprints gala where we took best team in girls and 3rd in boys categories collecting 6 trophies and 30medals.

Our 2nd term was packed with activities as it was our sports day term, we started off with the kitusuru development swimming gala at the school of the nations which included our kindergarten swimmers who put a great show of effort, we became best overall school in girls and 3rd best in boys.

We had wonderful sports days in all the campuses, it was three weeks full of energy and prowess. we started with the kasuku campus where we lined up different activities including obstacles, athletics and ball games and after a hard competition from different houses tausi again emerged victorious, at kindergarten the little ones competed in a list of obstacles races and problem solving activities which extended past class activities and they were all awarded as they are all winners. We capped it up with a great display of power from the Karen campus sporties engaging in competitive races and ball games and all winners were awarded medals and trophies.

We also had our termly friendlies with NIS and attended the Banda School under 7 football festival where our kindergarten soccer players gauged their improvement and overall skills in the game.

We finished the term with two soccer tournaments the ripples soccer tournament at don bosco seminary college Karen and the cheza sports tournament where our under 9s finished 2nd with just a point behind moi educational Centre. They were feted for their performance and came home with a trophy and medals.

Our third term activities were limited because of the short term but we started it on a high note with the soccer Africa interschool tournament for 7 years and under at Two Rivers Sports district which included mostly our kindergarten players who displayed great skill and team work, squashed all the teams and emerged the best in the event bringing home the second trophy this year alone congratulations to them! we had our staff sports day which was packed with amazing games and races, we also attended the kitusuru development swimming gala at kirawa road school which included mostly our kindergarten swimmers who showcased their skills and became 2nd best school in both girls and boys we also came in 2nd overall in the event. Our golfers attended the junior captain golf tournament and our girl Leticia won the non-handicapped 7yrs and below trophy for the 9 holes off junior tee 1 category. Well done!

Our last event of the term was the Nairobi academy tournament which our soccer academy players attended and as tradition, won trophies for 2nd place in under 7 and 3rd in under 9.we are looking forward to our first out of country event in Arusha this December, the east Africa chipkizi tournament, we encourage sign-ups for both soccer and golf academies and God willing next year we shall start our swimming club and take our champs even further internationally, the future can only be brighter.

Merry Christmas!

Iwill begin by quoting Ernest Hemingway “it is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end”. We have finally come to the end of the year and I must say it has not been an easy journey but through God we took every challenge that came our way positively. As it is in life we don’t wait for the storm to pass, we learn to dance in the storm.

I congratulate all the ballerinas in both their individual and team achievements, the new ballerinas for showing a positive attitude since they joined and the commitment for continual growth for those who have been through the ballet levels.

The advanced class had an amazing showcase in the first term where they performed before their families and fellow students. We also launched the new Kiota African Ballet costume which was positively embraced. In the coming academic year 2023 it is my aspiration that all the students from grade four upwards to at least own one of the new costumes for uniformity during performances within or outside the school. This is to emphasize on the uniqueness of Kiota School.

To the parents of Kiota, I take this opportunity to appreciate you all for being supportive to this course of taking all our children to the next level of being the best ballerinas. I encourage all parents and our children to keep up the good spirit.

To the school management, thank you for the opportunity you have given us to serve and be part of the Kiota fraternity and to

the teachers, I appreciate the tireless effort you put in, to coordinate the ballerinas to attend the ballet classes in time while fully dressed ready for the sessions.

To the ballerinas “You earn your trophies at practice. You just pick them up at competitions.” The trophy is earned in the hours that no one is watching. This is to tell you that you don’t get what you wish for but that which your work for. Consistency always wins.

Psalms 149:3, Let them praise His name with dance:

My team and I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

MAY GOD’S BLESSING BE UPON YOU! Ms Julian

FROM A DROPOUT TO AN ACCOMPLISHED ARCHITECT

By second form, Marvin was a school dropout having been expelled from Nyeri Baptist High school. He had hit rock bottom and had stayed home for 6 months without any desire of going back to school. By sheer luck his father got to know of Peak Performance International programs and decided to enroll Marvin as a last hope. That was in 2005.

At the point of enrolment, Marvin says “My self esteem was really low at that moment and wondered why I was even attending the program.” During the course, Marvin discovered how his negative belief systems and habits had contributed to his low self esteem and current situation. He believed he was not smart enough like other students and his siblings. During the training he learnt how to reprogram and condition himself for success. “It’s unbelievable how your attitude can change your performance”. He says.

Equipped with a new way of thinking, advanced but easy to apply learning techniques, Marvin told his father that he was ready to go

back to school. Pioneer High School agreed to give him a chance, which Marvin seized with renewed spirit and drive. His confidence and focus was super high. He says “Within one term at Pioneer High school I achieved a B+, a huge jump from my best grade of D+ at Nyeri Baptist.” He continued applying the techniques he had learned at Peak Performance and upon seating for his KCSE, he scored a straight A becoming the top student in Murang’a and earning himself a place at the University of Nairobi where he was later to complete his degree in Architecture. Marvin now successfully runs his own Architectural firm. Marvin has beaten all odds to currently become the entrepreneur that he is today. He attributes a great proportion of his success to the several programs he has undertaken with Peak Performance International. Through these programs, Marvin says he has been able to achieve far more success than most of his peers. He always wonders, what his life would be like if his father had not taken him to the life changing programs.
