At Kinhaven Music School, we’ve been making this dream come true for 66 years.

Kinhaven is a unique summer school in the rolling green hills of Weston, Vermont. Every year, 90 musicians are accepted for the Senior Session and 70 musicians are accepted for the Junior Session.

Students are selected based on auditions, but after that the competition ends. Our commitment to mutual support rather than rivalry distinguishes Kinhaven from many other music schools.

Chamber music is at the heart of the program. You will play in several chamber groups, large ensembles, symphony orchestra, and have the opportunity to participate in master classes and studio performance classes. You will have many public performance opportunities.

The spirit of Kinhaven inspires plenty of spontaneous music-making, singing, and chamber music reading sessions. The afternoons lend themselves nicely to many nonmusical activities, but also are perfect additional practice hours for those who want a more intense experience.

Kinhaven is on a 31-acre campus and has unlimited offerings both musical and recreational. Vermont in the summer is irresistible; Kinhaven offers glorious opportunities in music-making and, even more important, friendships.

MUSIC PROGRAM Kinhaven has an experienced and dedicated faculty. We choose teachers as much for their sensitivity as for their professional excellence. Our Kinhaven Faculty perform in professional and highly acclaimed chamber music groups or orchestras, and many teach at leading universities and colleges around the United States. Through our faculty and the legacy that each of them carries onward, students are exposed to the teachings of Dorothy DeLay, David Finckel, Joseph Alessi, Ricardo Morales, and Menahem Pressler, to name only a few.

Outside the studio, they might be on your softball team or join you on the “sitting-hill.” Most students find their teachers are more than teachers; they are friends and mentors as well.

You may or may not have professional ambitions; what matters is that you love to play and perform. Our program is designed to help you grow in musical appreciation, sharpen your performance skills, and allow you time and space to explore your own creative potential.

Kinhaven has a rotational rather than a challenge system. Orchestra seatings and chamber music assignments change weekly. Throughout the summer, you will perform varied styles of music, play with many different musicians, and experience various positions in the orchestra.

The student body of Kinhaven’s Senior Session is based on the size of a full symphony orchestra, with double winds and brasses. We also accept six to eight pianists.

CHAMBER MUSIC The heart of the Kinhaven music program is chamber music.

Each student is assigned to a chamber group with a coach and a musical work appropriate to the group’s ability. After studying and performing the composition, you will be assigned to other ensembles with new coaches and new pieces.

PRIVATE LESSONS You will have at least one private lesson a week on your major instrument. Your teacher may want to meet with you more often to review your progress. This close personal support helps you prepare for performances and adopt productive practice habits. Many teachers host a studio/performance class so that students have the chance to perform solo works.

ORCHESTRA The orchestra plays classical symphonic repertoire. The nightly rehearsals culminate in the performance of a movement or two or an overture every Sunday afternoon. LARGE ENSEMBLE We form large ensembles to explore the music literature for string orchestra, woodwind ensembles, brass and combined ensembles.

Our percussion program brings together percussion majors, piano majors, and others seeking to broaden their experience. We focus on learning works for percussion ensemble, rhythm and ear training.

SENIOR SESSION PROGRAM (CONTINUED) CHORUS Three times a week, all Kinhaven students gather together as a chorus. This chorus includes singers with a wide range of technical ability. It is through this communal singing that we come closest to the founders’ vision of music-making.

COMPOSITION Aspiring composers have the option to study composition in private and small group settings with Composer-in-Residence, Nicolas Scherzinger. In addition to lessons, students can attend composition seminars (master classes), which cover such topics as preparing score and parts, notation standards, composition and analysis, performance and analysis, counterpoint, musical form, orchestration, theoretical concepts, and other topics related to contemporary music and composition. Each summer there is one public concert devoted solely to the performance of student compositions.

COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE Kinhaven is fortunate to have Nicolas Scherzinger, Chair of the Composition and Theory Departments at the Setnor School of Music, Syracuse University. He holds a DMA in composition from the Eastman School of Music. Private lessons, seminars and performances are open to serious student composers.

PIANO AT KINHAVEN Piano majors are placed in chamber music groups, receive several coachings per week and perform in student concerts. Students have private lessons on chamber music and solo repertoire.

Ample practice time is assigned on our numerous grand pianos. Weekly sight-reading sessions are offered to give pianists the skills they need to learn music more quickly. Those pianists with secondary instruments may participate in instrumental ensembles.

SENIOR SESSION INFORMATION ADMISSIONS Kinhaven accepts 90 students. To apply, students must have finished eighth grade; students who have completed 12th grade are also eligible.

Everyone is required to audition by CD or sound file or in person. Check the website for times and locations of live auditions.

The admissions process begins after January 1. Applications with CD or sound file are accepted until each class is filled. Most of the decisions are made by the end of March. We are happy to provide information about openings at any time.

The CD or sound file should have a representative piece of your choice, five to ten minutes, and be sent to the Admissions Office.

CDs, DVDs, or electronic submissions are welcome. Tips for recordings can be found on our website.

DATES & TUITION The senior session will run for six weeks from June 23 to August 6, 2017. Students are accepted for the entire time only. Tuition is $6,700.00. After you have been accepted we require a nonrefundable deposit of $900.00 in order to secure your place in our enrollment. The balance is due by May 15th.

All tuition payments are non-refundable.

FINANCIAL AID Each year, funds are allocated for tuition reduction. These grants come from foundations, individual donors and other sources.

Financial aid is available to qualified students who demonstrate fiscal need. If you would like to attend Kinhaven but are concerned about the tuition, we invite you to apply for financial aid. Please contact the New Jersey Office with any questions.

Carmit Zori Kinhaven turned out to be a life changing Violinist, Artistic experience for our daughter Amalia. She had Director of the Brooklyn Chamber Music Society such a good time whether it was playing Kinhaven parent, the piano in a chamber music group and Amalia Rinehart, 2009 sharing thoughts with her peers about the music or having private lessons or listening to the concerts every weekend. I think it was important for her to see that she was not an odd kid and that there are other kids like her. She loved singing everyday and enjoyed every aspect of the daily routine at Kinhaven. The faculty was fantastic. Her piano teachers were inspiring. The chorus was so much fun. Amalia returned home and made an oil painting of Hindemith after hearing his music played by the Orchestra in the summer. At Kinhaven it seems as if it was just the right combination of smart passionate and generous human beings. What a treat!! Thank you for this place.

For the twenty-seventh year, Kinhaven continues to offer a two-week program for younger musicians. The program for the Junior Session is open to string players, wind players, brass players, and pianists.

THE FACULTY consists of a full complement of professional musicians, all skilled teachers, coaches, and performers.

THE MUSIC PROGRAM

is comprehensive, including private lessons, daily chamber music coachings, string orchestra, wind ensemble, brass choir, full orchestra, chorus, and public performances.

RECREATION is ample with swimming, tennis, ping-pong, soccer, folk-dancing, hikes, scavenger hunts, pottery, silk-screening, creek walks, visits to Weston, volleyball, softball, and lots more.

CONCERTS are held on both weekends and are open to the public. All students perform each weekend. The final Sunday morning concert ends the session, sending everyone home with two weeks of very special memories.

MORNINGS consist of chamber music, lessons, and practicing.

Everyone has scheduled hours to practice and everyone will be assigned to at least one chamber music group each week. Ensembles receive daily coachings. Lessons will focus on preparing for performances and learning good practice habits.

AFTERNOONS are free for everyone to enjoy the beautiful Vermont surroundings. Many games, hikes and trips are planned by our ambitious activities staff. Before dinner, either the chorus meets, rehearsals are planned, or free time is extended.

EVENINGS offer string orchestra, full orchestra, wind ensemble and brass ensemble. Weekend evenings feature faculty recitals, folk dancing, storytelling, and square dancing. Reading in the cabins completes each day.

In 2015, Kinhaven launched the tremendously successful Young Artist Seminar. Now entering its third season, this intensive chamber music program is for college and pre-professional musicians.

Students work closely with dedicated and experience teachers for one week and then perform an entire musical work in concert. In addition to the opportunity to perform, the program’s outreach concerts are a chance for our students to establish friendships with our neighbors by giving back to the local community. The Young Artist Seminar is committed to the highest artistic and educational standards and to a spirit of community squarely in line with Kinhaven’s core values.

THE FACULTY consists of the finest coaches, many drawn from the rosters of Kinhaven’s Senior Session.

THE MUSIC PROGRAM

focuses on chamber music repertoire and also includes works performed by our conductorless chamber orchestra and our chorus. Groups are assigned to a studio and a coach for the week, with rehearsals and coachings scheduled each morning and afternoon. Other musical activities include performance classes, chorus and organized discussions on musical topics and career planning.

RECREATION is relaxed and fun, ranging from folk-dancing to outings in our beautiful Vermont surroundings.

To attend, students must have completed one year of higher education or the equivalent. Applications are available on the Kinhaven web site and may be submitted electronically. GENERAL INFORMATION RELAXATION

Our comprehensive afternoon program has something for everyone. The beautiful swimming pond, volleyball court, soccer field, basketball court, tennis court, and ping pong tables are available to all. Hikes and walks into town are easily organized, and our activities staff plans outings, games, scavenger hunts, the annual regatta, folk dancing, and strawberry picking!

The art shack (DaVinci) has a fully equipped pottery studio for beginners and experienced ceramists alike; sculpture, drawing, painting, carving, silk-screening, and even tie-dying can fill your afternoons.

Quiet time is precious, too. The afternoon can be yours to read, practice, play chess or cards, compose, or indulge in a favorite Kinhaven pastime, “hill-sitting.”

FACILITIES

The Kinhaven Kitchen is famous for its delicious homemade fare – fresh, nutritious, and definitely non-institutional. Breads and coffee cakes are baked daily. Lasagna, pizza, quiches, soups, pesto, burritos, and desserts are all made from scratch by our dedicated cooks. Non-meat dishes are available for our growing vegetarian population. Meals are times of good eating, socializing, and are the focal point of communication within the Kinhaven community.

The Concert Hall houses the symphony orchestra and the chorus. It holds an audience of 200.

All of the public concerts are presented in the Concert Hall. Everything from nightly orchestra rehearsals to large percussion pieces to weekly folk dancing takes place in this warm, wooden building.

Practice cabins are sprouting up all over the spacious campus. Morning time is assigned to everyone for practice. Practice spaces are available to all students during free time.

Students live in cabins which were recently built. Students live in spacious rooms and have a counselor nearby. There are daily cabin inspections, ensuring living areas are always extremely clean.

Other facilities include a first aid center, which is well-equipped and hopefully rarely used. A very large rehearsal building reserved for brasses is called Crescendo. We have an exhaustive chamber music library. Our ten grand pianos, including six Steinways, are continually being upgraded and restored. In the Concert Hall, in addition to our best Steinway, is a small pipe organ and a harpsichord.

The Common Room has a fireplace, games, and comfortable couches for those chilly days.

FACULTY BIOGRAPHIES Executive Directors; Program Directors, Senior Session

Deborah Buck, Violin, has been a member of the Lark Quartet for the past thirteen years; commissioning and premiering many of America’s Pulitzer Prize-winning composers, and recording extensively for Bridge Records, Koch, Arabesque, and Endeavor Classics labels. Ms. Buck has served as concertmaster for the Brooklyn Philharmonic, St. Matthew’s Chamber Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Camerata. Her recitals have been heard in broadcasts around the U.S., and she has been a soloist with several orchestras including Little Orchestra Society at Alice Tully Hall and the Brooklyn Philharmonic. Ms. Buck earned her Bachelor of Music Degree from the Juilliard School and completed a Master’s Degree with Robert Lipsett at the University of Southern California. She is Assistant Professor of Violin at SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music. Since 2004, Ms. Buck has performed on a violin

Martha Knieriem, Viola/Violin, has a BM in Viola Performance from the University of North Carolina and an MM from Ithaca College.

She also studied at the Eastman School of Music and the Hartt School of Music. Principal teachers include Heidi Castleman and Scott Nickrenz. Marty Co-Directs the Instrumental Music Program at the Smith College Campus School and teaches at the Community Music School of Springfield, where she directs String City Youth Orchestra. She has been a member of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra since 1981.

John Bannon, Percussion, Sr., is Principal Timpanist with The Florida Orchestra, and teaches conducting at St. Petersburg College. He was formerly Principal Timpanist with the Anchorage Symphony, the Oklahoma Symphony, the Orquesta Sinfonica de Mineria in Mexico City, the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder, and the Honolulu Symphony. He earned degrees in Percussion Performance from the University of South Florida (BA) and Anthony Mazzocchi, Trombone, the University of Michigan (MM), and in received his BM and MM degrees from Instrumental Conducting (DMA) from the Manhattan School of Music. He the University of Miami. received the Janet Schenck Award for Outstanding Musicianship from the Kenny Bean, Conductor, Jr., earned school in 1997. Tony has performed a BM in Trumpet Performance from with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Oberlin Con-servatory and a MME New Jersey Symphony, San Diego from Jackson State University. Junior Session

Sandy Dennis, Piano, received her BM and MMT degrees from Oberlin Conservatory, and her MM from The Juilliard School. Her teachers include Beveridge Webster, Arthur Dann, and Bonnee Hendricks Hoy. Sandy currently teaches at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA, and privately, and performs regularly throughout the New England area.

Hubert Chen, Violin, Jr. A native New Yorker, Hubert Chen received his BA from SUNY Geneseo after 8 years at Juilliard Pre-College. His primary teachers have been Margaret Pardee, Laura Balkin and Eric Lewis, and has been coached in chamber music by the Manhattan String Quartet, Tremont String Quartet, Edward Melkus, and Mark Steinberg. He completed his Suzuki teacher training at The School for Strings and Kodaly Methodology

certification at NYU. Hubert is on faculty at the Diller-Quaile School of Music and St. Luke’s School. He serves as the concertmaster of the New York Repertory Orchestra, and is a board member and musician with Anti-Social Music.

Shawn Coleman, Clarinet, Jr., is a graduate of the Juilliard School and the University of Colorado Graduate School. Shawn is a Kinhaven Senior Session Alumni and has been on the Junior Session staff since 1996.

Shawn served on the faculty of Music Advancement Program of the Juilliard School and was the Principal Clarinetist of the Wyoming Symphony. He left the symphony to join the Legislative Staff of U.S. Rep Jared Polis in Washington D.C. Currently he is the president of the Denver based lobbying firm 36 Solutions. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Colorado Youth Symphony.

Nicholas Diaz, Choral Director, Sr., has been teaching at East Hartford High School, Connecticut, since 2004.

Mr. Diaz enjoys serving as a vocal judge, clinician, and guest conductor for various high school and middle school choral festivals in Connecticut and New York. He performs with the Vernon Chorale as a member of the tenor section and as a soloist. Mr. Diaz earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Choral Music Education from the University of Michigan, and his Masters Degree in Orchestral Conducting from the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Nicholas DiEugenio, Violin, Sr., holds degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music (BM, MM ’05), where he studied with David Cerone, Linda Cerone, and Paul Kantor, and from the Yale School of Music (Artist Diploma ’08, MMA ‘09), where he studied with Ani Kavafian, was a recipient of the Alumni Foundation Award, and an AlumniVentures grant.

Mr. DiEugenio teaches at the Ithaca College School of Music, where he is Assistant Professor of Violin and Chamber Music. Mr. DiEugenio has given solo performances with the Cleveland Bach Consort, National Repertory Orchestra, Cleveland Pops, CIM Orchestra, and Interlochen’s World Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Kathleen Foster, Viola/Violin, Jr., graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor’s degree and from the Mannes College of Music with an M.M. Her primary teachers were Michael Tree, John Graham, and Mikhail Boguslavsky. She plays Principal Viola

for the orchestra of Opera Saratoga, and regularly freelances with the New Jersey Symphony, Pennsylvania Ballet, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Opera Philadelphia, Philly Pops, and many other groups.

She has recently performed chamber music at BargeMusic, Weill Recital Hall, Symphony Space, and the Wintergarden Theater.

Tomoko Fujita, Cello, Sr., is the founding cellist of the Bryant Park Quartet.

Tomoko graduated summa cum laude from Rice University with a double degree: a B.M. in cello performance as a student of Norman Fischer; and a B.A. in psychology. She earned a M.M. at The Juilliard School while studying with Joel Krosnick and Darrett Adkins. In addition to being on the faculty of the Stony Brook University Pre-College Program and coaching at the New York Youth Symphony Chamber Music Program, she maintains a private studio in New York City and Long Island.

Adam Grabois, Cello, Sr., Adam Grabois has a varied career as chamber musician, soloist, teacher and recording artist and is the founder of the record label Reflex Editions. He is the cellist of the New York Chamber Soloists with whom he performs throughout the country. He has collaborated with Menahem Pressler, Rachel Barton Pine, Mikhail Baryshnikov and many others. He is the director of the Kinhaven Young Artist Seminar and previously served as president of the school’s board of directors. He also has teaching studios at the Weston Music Center in Connecticut and at the Hoff-Barthelson Music School in Scarsdale, NY. Rachel Iba, Violin, Jr., a Boston-area native, holds a B.M. from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she was awarded the Marilyn McDonald Violin Scholarship, the Louis and Annette Kaufman Violin Prize, and several other honors. A modern and baroque violinist, she performs frequently in a variety of contexts. Rachel currently lives in Santa Clarita, CA, where she is a masters student at California Institute of the Arts.

John Kehayas, Bassoon, Sr., is Bassoon Professor at the University of South Florida. He is a graduate of the Juilliard School where he was awarded the Namburg Foundation Scholarship for excellence in music performance.

Currently bassoonist of the Florida Orchestra, he has performed with The New York Philharmonic and was an inaugural member of The New World Symphony. His teachers included Leonard Sharrow, Sidney Rosenburg, and Judith LeClair.

Kenneth Kwo, Viola, Sr., Jr., was a double major in math and viola at Oberlin College and went on to the University of Iowa to earn his Master’s degree in viola. His primary teachers were David Becker, Kathryn Plummer and William Preucil. Ken has been a member of the Florida Orchestra since 1984.

Amber McPherson, Violin, Jr., completed her under-graduate studies at North Carolina School of the Arts and later earned a degree in early music performance practice at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig, Germany where she has lived since 1999. There she is active as a freelance Baroque violinist performing and recording primarily in Germany and the Czech Republic with ensembles such as the Dresdner Instrumental Concert, Telemannisches Collegium Michaelstein, Chemnitzer Barock Orchester, and Hofmusici.

Alberto Parinni, cello, Jr. has been principal cellist of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic since 2007 and a member of the American Symphony since 2010; he also performs regularly with the New York Philharmonic ,Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and New Jersey Symphony.

He performed throughout the U.S. with the American Chamber Players from 2004 to 2010, was the cellist of the St. Lawrence String Quartet in 2002-03 and spent one season as assistant principal cellist with the Richmond Symphony. His principal studies were with Timothy Eddy, Joel Krosnick, David Soyer, Colin Carr and Enrico Egano; he is a graduate of the Curtis Institute and the Juilliard School.

Alberto teaches cello at Princeton University and, in the summer, at Kinhaven Music School. He is also codirector of the Adult Chamber Music Workshop at Kinhaven.

Naho Tsutsui Parrini, Violin, Jr., a native of Japan, has given numerous solo and chamber music recitals in the United States, Japan, Germany, France, and Bulgaria. She received her BM from North Carolina School of the Arts, and her MM and DMA from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Her principal teachers include Kevin Lawrence, Mitchell Stern, Philip Setzer, and Pamela Frank. Ms. Parrini is Director of Education and a Resident Teaching Artist at Bloomingdale School Paul Murphy, Trumpet, Sr., has of Music in New York City. David Sapadin, Clarinet, Sr., earned his BM at the University of Southern California, his MM at the Manhattan School of Music, and an Artist Diploma from the Mannes School of Music.

His principal teachers were Ricardo Morales, Mitchell Lurie, Yehuda Gilad, and David Krakauer. He is a freelance clarinetist in New York, where he performs with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the American Symphony, the American Ballet Theater, and the St. Luke’s Chamber Orchestra.

Nicolas Scherzinger, Composer in Residence, Sr., is the chair of the Composition and Theory Department at the Setnor School of Music at Syracuse University where he teaches composition, music theory, improvisation, and digital music.

Mr. Scherzinger received a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition from the Eastman School of Music and has studied composition with Roger Briggs, David Liptak, Augusta Read Thomas, Christopher Rouse, Allan Schindler, and Joseph Schwantner.

Shannon Thomas, Violin, Sr., is currently Professor of Violin at Florida State University. She has performed at the Kennedy Center, Spoleto Festival USA, Carnegie Hall, and the Banff Centre Ms. Thomas earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She received a Master of Music at Yale University and a Bachelor of Music at Vanderbilt University, and Arizona State University. Her teachers have included Paul Kantor, Cornelia Heard, Jonathan Swartz, and Ani Kavafian.

Carolyn Wahl, French Horn, Sr., graduated from Baldwin Wallace Conservatory and studied with Dale Clevenger, Martin Morris and Lowell Shaw. She was a member of the Chicago Civic Orchestra. WORKSHOPS YOUNG ARTIST SEMINAR May 28 to June 4, 2017

Kinhaven is proud to launch the third year of a chamber music seminar focused on high level music making. Open to pre-formed groups as well as individual players (ages 18-28).

Attendees will engage in chamber music coachings, and perform in various venues in southern Vermont.

The session is directed by Adam Grabois.

The Kinhaven Piano Workshop, for musicians who have graduated from high school, was initiated by Leander Bien in 1994. This program focuses on piano four-hand literature.

CHAMBER MUSIC WORKSHOP June 14 to June 18, 2017

The Kinhaven Chamber Music Workshop is for musicians who have graduated from high school. Founded in 1993, Aberto and Naho Parrini direct the session. It is a five-day intensive chamber music session for all players of orchestral instruments

It was magical for her to be there with like-minded young musicians playing in orchestra, rehearsing chamber music, and practicing together in this idyllic setting amidst the Green Mountains of Vermont. The friendships she left with are very special to her and ones with which she continues to stay in touch. The staff and faculty were supportive and nurturing and according to Sofia funny and entertaining especially during rehearsals. Thank goodness!!!
