Local officer named detective employee of the year ZAVELA MAKWABE SERGEANT Xolani Mputamputa from the King William’s Town cluster, stationed at Kubusiedrift SAPS, had his shining moment when he was awarded the detective employee of the year award at this year’s South African Police Service (SAPS) Provincial Excellence Awards at the Boardwalk Casino in Port Elizabeth recently.

He received a certificate and a trophy for the best SAPS detective in the entire province.

Mputamputa was described by the King William’s Town Cluster Commander, Brigadier Luntu Ngubelanga, as “a true hero who sacrifices his life in the line of duty so that fellow citizens and neighbourhoods can be safer and more secure.

“He works with passion and dedication to serve and protect our people with pride and ensures that perpetrators are put behind

bars,” said Ngubelanga.

Sergeant Mputamputa’s passion and dedication are evident in the cases he has worked on and solved, such as the farm attack at Kubusiedrift where a farm owner and his wife were tied up with rope, while the suspects took off with jewellery, firearms and ammunition and a sum of R40 000.

His investigation led to the recovery of the firearms and the arrest of six suspects, three of whom were positively identified by the victims.

Justice was served when one of the suspects was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment while the other two were sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment.

In another case of housebreaking, Mputamputa helped recover firearms and apprehend seven suspects within a month of beginning the investigation.

The suspects allegedly broke into the Runlets’ Farm while the owner was on holiday in

Port Elizabeth and made off with seven firearms and more than 200 rounds of live ammunition from the safe.

The case is still continuing and the suspects are out on R500 bail and will appear in court again next week on September 21.

Mputamputa also investigated an attempted murder case by two police officials from Cape Town at the Izele SAPS. The two police officials, along with four other suspects, were arrested by the committed investigating officer in Cape Town last year.

those who died are still not happy because some of them do not have stable jobs.

“We are working together with the families to help them but it may never be enough,” the Eastern Cape Premier, Phumulo Masualle, said.

The three-phased commemoration event, which was led by the premier, started at the Ginsberg Cemetery and proceeded to the Bhisho Memorial Park.

The march then continued to the Victoria Grounds in King William’s Town.

This year’s commemoration was located within the context of the 62nd anniversary of the adoption of the Freedom Charter which took place in Kliptown in 1955.

Scholarship unlocks doors for disadvantaged pupils SIPHOKAZI VUSO THE Eastern Cape Minister of Education, Mandla Makupula, recently launched a scholarship to fund pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds who have passed their matric with flying colours so as to enable them to further their studies.

The scholarship known as the Mathew Goniwe Scholarship was launched on August 8 and named after Goniwe to honour the political veteran who was also a maths and science educator.

The MEC said the scholarship came after the Education Department found that there was a huge gap in the Eastern Cape for teachers of critical subjects such as maths and science.

“We are targeting pupils who are interested in following a career path in teaching maths, science and other scarce skills,” he said.

“We will fund them and in return we are asking the students to give us four years after they graduate to teach what they have learnt in places of need that will be specified by the department,” he added.

Another beneficiary, Nelson Mandela University (NMU) student Godfrey Bakers, said the MEC has made it possible for those who come from disadvantaged families to have hope in the future.

“The scholarship has proven to us that it does not matter where you come from, with education you can unlock doors. ”He has made it possible for us to study and for that we want to promise that we will do our best to carry out our responsibilities beyond the call off duty,” Bakers said.

Other universities that benefited from the scholarship are Walter Sisulu University, as well as Free State University.

“With this bursary we are not only looking for the best performing pupils but we also want to pay attention to those coming from poor backgrounds.

“We will then place the beneficiaries in public schools after they graduate, mainly in rural areas, as there is a huge shortage of teachers in those areas due to teachers moving to urban areas,” the MEC concluded.

King William’s Town Express readers have their say Last week the Buffalo City Metro’s mayor, Mr Xola Pakati, urged the council to approve new geographical names for the towns and their streets. Express correspondent, ZAVELA MAKWABE, took to the streets and asked a few locals what their views were regarding the renaming of towns and streets.

KING William’s Town was founded

by Sir Benjamin D’Urban, the governor of the Cape Colony, after the War of Hintsa (1834-1835).

The town was named after King William IV and was established as the capital of the Province Queen Adelaide, stretching between the Kei and Keiskamma Rivers. D’Urban’s scheme did not, however, succeed and the territory was handed back to the Xhosa in 1836.

During the course of the War of the Axe (1846-1847) the town was reestablished by the new governor, Sir Harry Smith.

From this date King William’s Town slowly grew and prospered as the administrative, military,

economic and educational centre of British Kaffraria.

The province was then incorporated into the Cape Province in 1866.

Centuries later, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality’s mayor, Xola Pakati, is urging the council to approve new geographical names for the towns and their streets. This has resulted in opposing views on the matter.

The names of King William’s Town and East London, including street names such as Oxford Street, St George’s, St Peter’s to name a few, are among the names put forward to be officially changed.

Express correspondent, Zavela Makwabe, took to the streets and asked a few locals what their views were regarding the renaming of the towns and streets. ) Yonda Mfeketo: This would be a waste of funds. Infrastructure is more important than name changes. Roads and bridges in King William’s Town and East London need to be fixed.

The money that will be used for this farce could be put to better use. There are an awful lot of im-

portant things our government should rather focus on. ) Vathiswa Ntsabo: It is important to rename our towns back to their original African names and do away with these names which have colonial connotations. It is long overdue! More than two decades into democracy, we shouldn’t even be having these conversations. A lot was changed, the names should be changed as well. ) Lwandile Jako: I do feel we need to change these European names.

As for naming them after struggle heroes, I am okay with that too as long as those struggle heroes do not belong to a specific political party.

They could be named after someone who plays or played a big role in society. Anyone. Dead or alive.

Communities need to be part of these name changes as well. ) Andisiwe Sopazi: These things cost money and time. The council can change the names but people will go ahead and call these places what they want to call them anyway. More important things should take priority. ) Zuki Gcadana: Of course the names should change. The names should represent something or someone. For instance, I have no idea who King William is or why he deserved to have a town named after him.

East London rapper set to release new music video MICHAEL SWARTZ UPCOMING hip-hop rapper, Tony Botha from East London, recently started shooting a new music video at Club Pulse for his latest song titled Bounce, which will be released later this month.

Raised by a family with a musical background, Botha, known as T-One 80, fell in love with music at a very young age.

The 32-year-old started rapping in 2004 and has been working on new material ever since.

Earlier this year he received support from his family and friends while shooting his first video called Waste no Time, directed and produced by Jermaine Pretorius, also known as J I. The music video included various scenes from his neighbourhood and went viral within one month as it hit more than 3 000 likes on Facebook and YouTube.

Botha said the music video was very close to his heart as it was inspired by people who haven’t given up on life and are able to smile regardless of the hardships they face.

He is currently working on his debut album, with the support from family and friends in the hope of raising enough funds to record it this year.

Clubbers at Club Pulse were in for a big surprise as they were also featured in the new music video. Pretorius said that he would do his outmost best to ensure that the next video lands a spot on MTV, Trace and Channel O. Botha said that he has worked extremely hard with his producers to make this a reality.

Learners from both schools agreed that the event was both educational and an eye­opener where they gained much experience on history and teamwork.

Chefs graduate from national youth training programme ZAVELA MAKWABE A TOTAL of 44 new chefs were awarded their qualifications in the last leg of the nationwide graduation of the Department of Tourism National Youth Chefs Training Programme (NYCTP) at the NU 7 Community Hall in Mdantsane last Tuesday.

The chefs passed the programme with an average pass rate of 90%. Some received internationally recognised diplomas, while others received certificates.

In partnership with the South African Chefs Association (SACA), this flagship programme aims to train and develop unemployed youth.

Since 2011, more than 1 500 youth completed the programme.

This year alone, the department invested R74 million in their intake of 577 youth between the ages of 18 and 35 across the country.

In the Eastern Cape, they accepted 50 hopefuls, but six of them “could not handle the heat in the kitchen” and dropped out of the course.

Minister of Tourism, Thokozile Xasa, who officiated at the event, said, “Culinary art is a scarce skill and with South Africa fast becoming a destination of choice, we need qualified chefs.”

It was an emotional moment when one of the graduates, Unathi Dunjwa, who was awarded an advanced diploma in pastry, relayed a heartfelt message of thanks to her teary tutors, Chef Annette and Chef Rose.

“Straight out of high school with no hope of furthering my studies or getting a qualification, I got accepted into the programme. I still cannot believe I am now eligible to work in South Africa and as a qualified chef,” said Dunjwa.

“Things would get heated in the kitchen and sometimes we would mess up. Chef

Another graduate, Wele Nyakathi from King William’s Town, expressed gratitude to the government for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity they afforded him.

EP Media to launch new newspaper for Cradock and surrounds REPORTER Media24, publisher of Die Burger, will soon publish a free local newspaper for the Cradock, Middelburg and surrounding areas to bring fresh local news to the communities of this area every week.

According to Tasmia Ismail, general manager of Die Burger in the Eastern Cape and EP Media, the first issue of the Mid-Karoo Express newspaper will be published on Thursday, October 5. It is just a day before the start of the popular Fish River canoe marathon in Cradock.

“A total of 12,000 copies of the Mid-Karoo Express will be distributed every Thursday in towns such as Cradock, Middelburg, Somerset East, Cookhouse, Bedford, Adelaide and Fort Beaufort,” said Ismail.

“These are free newspapers and give people in the area the opportunity to read all their local news. EP Media already brings eight very successful local newspapers to the people of the Eastern Cape. Two of the newspapers, PE Express and UD News, are 34 and 46 years old, respectively. Two brand new newspapers were also launched in Queenstown and King William’s Town since February last year, and they have been well-received in those communities.

“The Cradock and Middelburg area is the only area in the Eastern Cape where Media24 has not yet published a free local newspaper. The interest we have already received from advertisers is a good indication that there is a great need for such a newspaper for the community, “Ismail said.

According to the newspaper’s editor, Bettie Giliomee, Mid-Karoo Express will not only be a source of local news for the community, but

will also bring good-quality reading material free to people who are not always able to pay for reading material.

FOCUS ON: HERITAGE MONTH

Locals pay tribute to unsung Eastern Cape hero SIYANDA NKONYENI AS South Africa celebrates Heritage Month this September, it is the perfect time to share the story of cultural and political activist Malcomess Mgabela, one of the unsung heroes to come from the Eastern Cape.

Mgabela’s story is not only about his extraordinary role as a political activist, but also as a circumcision surgeon who went above and beyond his calling even in trying and dangerous times.

Having circumcised more than 361 political prisoners while incarcerated for 18 years at Robben Island for his political activism, many could learn from his journey that ensured safe passage for many young men to manhood.

Born in 1924 in East London, receiving little education, Mgabela got involved in politics at a young age,

something that earned him his 18year jail sentence in 1964.

Despite thinking that his days as a traditional surgeon were over, his calling followed him to prison, where he was approached by a few inmates who asked him to circumcise them.

In the mid-1970s things happened very quickly as young men were flocking to the island prison in numbers and felt that, since they were sentenced to longer prison sentences, they should be circumcised because they were going to come out as old men.

Despite being aware of rumours doing the rounds that he was involved in such an unlawful act in prison, and that more time would be added to his sentence if he got caught, Mgabela still continued.

This also became beneficial to the African National Congress (ANC) as it became another way of recruiting members from rival political organi-

His secret caught up with him when

it was discovered that he circumcised a white prison guard who had to be relocated to Pretoria because of the embarrassment to the authorities.

The warden apparently had a per-

sonal problem and, upon hearing that Mgabela was circumcising prisoners, insisted that he do the same to him and reluctantly he did.

Another incident that got him into trouble was in 1981 when he unknowingly circumcised a man who suffered from diabetes that resulted in him bleeding heavily and having to spend three days in hospital in a coma.

The light punishment he got was the result of the explanation he gave to the prison authorities when he was asked to explain himself.

He told them how important it was to perform the ritual in prison so as to teach young prisoners discipline and maturity. For that he missed two meals and spent one night in the punishment cells.

Mgabela was released in January 1982 and returned to East London.

In December of that year he started to do circumcisions again.

Remembering a young, inspirational boxing hero SIYANDA NKONYENI GOD-FEARING, hardworking and selfless are some of the attributes that best described boxing champ Ludumo Galada’s character.

It was also his selflessness that ended his life in car accident in January 2009, while returning from fetching an ailing relative in Johannesburg. King William’s Town Express correspondent, Siyanda Nkonyeni, interviewed him a month before his death and recalls the occasion as follows.

“After days of unsuccessfully trying to secure an interview with the then young boxing champion, Ludumo Galada, we finally met on a rainy

Tuesday morning at his home in NU1 about six years ago.

I remember as if it was yesterday the day before the interview, his phone rang unanswered for some time when I tried to call him.

When he finally answered I could hear voices in the background and I later realised that I was interrupting a man while he was busy in conversation (praying) with His Almighty.

On my arrival his beaming smile assured me that I was welcome, and soon I became aware of his unassuming stature and good demeanour, which made it hard to believe that he was beating people up for a living and was good at it.

From the start it became clear that

this was not going to be an ordinary interview.

Before we even started with the interview he suggested that we say a prayer and we also ended the interview with a prayer, which was an indication of how religious he was, which was something I found a bit unusual for a boxer.

At the time of the interview, Galada had just become a WBF featherweight champion, a far cry from the 10-year-old boy who started boxing out of curiosity.

His array of medals and trophies were a reflection of his success as an amateur over the years, with an impressive record of 159 fights, losing seven of these, one draw and 102 KO’s.

He counted many good memories as a boxer, like when he won his first medal in 1994 just a year after starting boxing. Between 2000 and 2005 he also enjoyed the best years of his blossoming career as he represented South Africa in many competitions like the All Africa Games, Commonwealth Games and the Zone 6 games in various countries in the senior amateur level.

He also participated in the Olympic Qualifier Games in Botswana in 2004, were he was chosen to represent South African in Athens, but lost in the preliminary stages.

Galada’s episode serves as a lesson to upcoming and current champions that dedication and discipline can take one a long way in boxing.”

1 tsp paprika 1 punnet cherry tomatoes, halved (about 250g) 1 tub feta cheese (200g, Danish style works best) 6 jumbo eggs Salt and freshly ground pepper A handful of basil leaves (chopped or torn into smaller pieces) Slices of bread

ANTICIPATION is once again in the air in the lead up to National Braai Day, which takes place annually on September 24.

The National Braai Tour is currently taking the country by storm, celebrating the uniquely South African tradition, until September 16.

September 24 also happens to be Heritage Day, making it the perfect day for South Africans to celebrate the country’s rich history through the tradition of lighting a fire, inviting a few friends over and shaking off the day’s stress.

The man behind the National Braai Day initiative, Jan Braai, has prepared a few mouth-watering recipes to get the South African spirit going.

“This recipe is pretty self-explanatory and I trust that even the casual observer will clearly see how great it is by simply reading through it. You make a very high-quality relish in your potjie on the fire and then you bake or poach some eggs in hollows in the relish. Simple as that.

“The only ingredient that could be mildly challenging is cabanossi, which is similar to droëwors, and can be found at butcheries throughout South Africa. Failing that, just use salami or chorizo.”

2 tots of olive oil 200g cabanossi sliced into small pie-

ces 1 red onion, sliced 1 red pepper, sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed ½ tsp cayenne pepper or chilli powder

) In your no. 10 flat-bottomed potjie, heat the oil and fry the cabanossi, onion and pepper for a few minutes.

You want the cabanossi to sweat and release a good aroma and the onion to soften. ) Add the garlic, cayenne pepper and paprika and let it fry for another minute. ) Add the tomatoes and mix it all together. Let it simmer covered with the lid, for about 10 minutes so that all the flavours can socialise and get to know each other. ) Crumble all of the feta evenly into the potjie on top of the tomato mixture. ) Now use your wooden spoon and make six dents or hollows in the relish, big enough for an egg. Break an egg into each hole, taking care not to break the egg yolks. ) Season with salt and pepper and close the lid. Leave to cook for about

six minutes on flames or coals. The relish needs to bubble as that will cook the eggs. The meal is ready when the egg whites are mostly cooked and the yellow is still mostly soft. There is no harm in lifting the lid and peeking inside the potjie to see when this is done. ) Sprinkle with the basil leaves and serve immediately; this is not a meal that needs to rest before serving ) Serve with fire-toasted bread.

Does advantage lie ahead for Ferrari in Singapore?

THE Formula 1 paddock is heading east as it readies for the final stretch of the 2017 season.

Singapore’s Marina Bay Circuit will be the spectacular backdrop to the ever intense battle for championship glory in 2017.

As it stands, Lewis Hamilton leads the driver’s standings by three points after winning back-to-back races in Belgium and Italy.

However, while these past two races and their low downforce configurations were always slated to highlight and play to Mercedes’ strength, the streets of Singapore hold a completely different connotation in prospect.

At five kilometers, with 23 relentless corners, the Marina Bay Circuit is one of the most demanding layouts of the season. Add to that the closeness of the barriers and the humidity and it becomes arguably the most physically demanding race on the calendar.

“As a track, it’s really tough and physically demanding – arguably one of the hardest of the season. The lap is long with lots of corners and some tight and sharp bits.

The high temperature and humidity, combined with the fact that it’s a street circuit, makes it quite hard,” said Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg.

Singapore, on the calendar since 2008, has delivered some memorable races in its time.

The inaugural race itself likely saw one of the shadiest incidents in the 21st century for Formula 1 and it had nothing to do with the fact that the Grand Prix is run at night.

Instead controversy swept through the Renault team, as it was later revealed that Nelson Piquet JR was ordered to deliberately crash to prompt a safety car and setup then teammate Fernando Alonso to win the race.

It led to a lifetime ban for team boss Fla-

vio Briatore and Piquet JR was never seen in F1 again. Contrastingly, it has also delivered some superb races, such as in 2013 when Kimi Raikkonen, then a Lotus driver, stormed onto the podium, despite starting thirteenth, with severe back pain.

The Marina Bay Circuit, as a high-downforce track, is expected to suit Ferrari in the way that Monaco and Hungary highlighted the strengths of the Scuderia. Pirelli has nominated the same range of compounds as in Monaco, which include the ultra- and supersoft tyre.

While Mercedes has made some progress in getting their tyre temperatures perfectly balanced, there’s no telling how much progress they have made and they will not like having this spread of compounds available this weekend.

As it stands, Niki Lauda believes that Mercedes has zero chance of seeing the top step of the podium in Singapore. What’s more is that Red Bull has made significant strides since the start of the season and could be a factor for Mercedes and perhaps even for Ferrari.

The fact that Marina Bay is a street circuit exponentially increases the likelihood of the safety car making an appearance, which makes strategy that much harder to predict.

Off the track it has been announced that Carlos Sainz is joining Renault for 2018, while McLaren is expected to announce an engine supply deal with Renault in the coming days.

It is further expected that Honda will remain in F1 by partnering with the Toro Rosso team.

As Hamilton holds a slender championship lead of three points over Vettel, the expectation is, barring unreliability, that the German driver will soar into the lead of the 2017 standings on a circuit tailor-made for his Ferrari.

EL students participate in Spur Schools MTB League REPORTER MOUNTAIN biking enthusiasts from East London were out in full force representing their schools in the Spur Schools Mountain Bike League #3 recently.

Regional event organiser, Luca Fanicchi, said he was thrilled by the great pre-entry response, “We received 112 rider entries and a total of 18 schools participated in the race.”

The Spur Schools Mountain Bike League was launched by Spur Steak Ranches and Amarider in 2009.

The initiative aims at providing a level of regional and national structure for the sport at school level, as well as encouraging schools to adopt mountain biking as an official in-school sport.

Lilyfontein High School and Hudson Park Primary were selected as the new district champions.

A cash prize of R10 000 is up for grabs and will be awarded to each school at the top of their age category.

The primary and high schools finishing top of the points log at the end of each season will be awarded the region’s school champion floating trophy.

Entries are now open for the Eastern Cape and registration will take place on September 16 at Hillview Cycle Park.

Palmer urges Mthatha Bucks team to play for loyal supporters ELETHU MTIKI MTHATHA Bucks’ head coach, Ian Palmer, has urged his players to put their supporters first to increase their chances of winning the National First Division championship.

Amathol’amnyama always enjoy great support when playing at Mthatha Stadium with their passionate fans cheering from all corners. For that reason, Palmer said that they cannot afford to disappoint the supporters.

“Absolutely! And that’s one of the main reasons I fight with the players to make sure that they please the supporters.

“All these supporters want is a win.

“Because they know if we win all our home games it will guarantee us a spot in the play-offs. The supporters are our 12th man. Without them, I don’t think these players can live up to their standards,” Palmers emphasised.

Bucks have not lost a game so far this season in their three matches.

They have obtained two draws away

Mthatha Bucks’ head coach, Ian Palmer, has urged his players to play for the support of their fans.

Knowing exactly what they need to do when playing in front of their supporters, Palmer also emphasised that they will have to improve in all their away games.

“We all know that our away games were not good last season, so we need to rectify that. If we can’t get maximum points, we must get one point. But not lose our away games. And in our home games we need to get maximum points and that will help us maintain the rhythm,” he said.

Last season the Eastern Cape’s only team in the NFD finished 8th on the standings.

Palmer, who took over from Eddie Dyaloyi in January this year before the start of the second round, guided the team in 15 matches in all competitions, winning six of those games while four ended in a draw and five were a loss.

Coming into the new season, Palmer, who is a former Orlando Pirates striker, said his only mission is to promote the team to the premier league.

ABC Motsepe League rookies face daunting challenges ELETHU MTIKI FINANCIAL limitations have forced the new ABC Motsepe League outfit, Try Again, to assemble a squad of local and inexperienced players to campaign in the upcoming season.

The Stutterheim-based side gained promotion to the third tier after winning the SAB League provincial play-offs which were held in Alice in June.

Many teams in the ABC Motsepe League always go for well-travelled players and even search for them across the borders of the Eastern Cape in their quest to bolster their squads.

Try Again head coach, Muzi Kheswa, is hopeful that his charges will do well against their experienced counterparts.

However, he is aware that he cannot ex-

pect great success from his team this season.

“Players develop as time goes on.

“You just have to make them understand and let them develop and experience how things are done because you cannot tell them to win the championship in their first season.

“We just have to fight survival from relegation,” said Kheswa.

“We don’t have the money to pay the players and that’s the main challenge. Getting a player who used to play in another ABC Motsepe League team, who’s used to getting paid, can cause an issue in the team.

“He might disappoint and not live up to the expectations.”

Try Again will kick off the season when they travel to Gelvandale Stadium in Port Elizabeth to face PE Stars this coming Saturday.

The league was supposed to have started last weekend, but Safa issued a statement about a delay in the process of printing out the cards of the players.

With teams having to travel a lot across the province for their league games, it means there is a lot of money that has to be paid for transport.

But that will not be part of the team’s problems as the Amahlathi Local Municipality came to their rescue by providing them with free transport for all their games.

Kheswa said he is hopeful that the municipality will support the team in other areas as well along the way.

However, he was grateful for what the municipality has promised about transport arrangements.

It is clear that there are more challenges than things to cheer about.

Another challenge that rookies Try Again face, is playing their home games away from home as the team does not have the proper grounds to meet Safa’s requirements.

Kheswa has confirmed that they will play their home games at Bhisho Stadium, Eastern Cape Bees’ home ground.

There is still hope though that they can use Stutterheim High School’s ground for their home games as the team is still in discussions with the school.

“We’ve been engaging with Stutterheim High School on the issue of the field. Our wish is to play at Stutterheim High School so that we can be close to our supporters.

“Maybe our first home game against Bizana Pondo Chiefs the following weekend will be in Bhisho, but we’re optimistic that will reach an agreement with the school,” concluded Kheswa.
