Marches Makers Festival 4 to 6 May 2019 Once again the town will be filled with things of interest and beauty! Over 400 artworks in 10 venues in and around Kington on the Early Spring Bank Holiday. Take part in the Peoples’ Choice Prize by voting for your favourite artist/maker. Help to create a giant community artwork by adding your bit to the weaving. Come and see the live demonstrations at the Art & Craft Market on Saturday & Sunday. Take a look at the ECHO exhibition in the Oxford Arms and see what this great charity enables people with disabilities to make out of recycled materials. See work by pupils from Lady Hawkins’ School as part of the LOVEkington project. Listen to Belshazzar’s Feast at the Burton Hotel on Saturday evening. The Great Kington KLEEN-up Congratulations to all of you who took part in the brilliant Spring KLEEN as part of the Great Herefordshire Spring Clean. The KLEEN Sweep was held on Sunday 7th of April between 10 and 12 noon. there were cake and hot drinks at Border Bean afterwards, courtesy of KLEEN (what lovely people they are).

Apart from all the litter at least 15 barrow loads of soil and weeds were collected for the compost container. The town is now looking great, let's hope it stays that way for a while. Richie is gathering volunteers to adopt an area in the town to keep clean on a regular basis. Page Tree BLACK POPLAR PLANTINGS following several recent Native Black Poplar events and with the support of other experienced local Tree Wardens I have helped plant over 30 young BPs around Kington. Most of these are male because the females have a bit of a reputation for producing copious amounts of white, seed-bearing “fluff”. There is only one known adult female BP left in Herefordshire but there are 10 youngsters in my garden getting ready to plant out next winter. Maybe you know of a wet place we could plant one or two.

BRADNOR GREEN COPPICE Over the winter our coppice volunteers have re-cut the third “coup”, which is a strip of the wood. The coups we first cut are now growing into their third and second years respectively. The flowers and wildlife are thriving in the sunlight now reaching the ground. Some new people have learned how to cut the hazel poles off the stools with hand-tools.

It is easy for one person to cut enough material in this way to keep two others busy dealing with the

arisings both as firewood and new sticky habitat piles. I have just cut my first Field Maple tree to become a new coppice stool having recently become aware that it used to be quite common practice. There is also a fine Field Maple growing -on as one of the “standards”, timber trees, among the coppice and hedges along with Ash, Oak, Cherry, Willow, Holly, Rowan and Yew. Next winter we will re-pollard an older Elm in the hedge line.

ASH DIEBACK KLASH volunteers are monitoring this disease (Chalara) by taking annual photos of local Ash trees so that we can see how it progresses. Most local ash trees will surely die and we must start planting other tree species now if we are to replace these endemic landscape trees.

WYCHE ELM IS WITCH? Monday 20 May 68pm You are invited to join local Tree Wardens for “A Walk in the Woods,” in Kington. But, since there are no woods in the town, we are going to visit a few local Elm Trees to try to identify which Elm is wych, with a little experienced guidance. We will meet at Place de Marines (Kington Market Hall) walk 2-3 miles on some of the town’s less trod paths to arrive at Ye Olde Tavern around Sunset. See what I did there!

Kington Town Council Welcome to the Kington Town Council pages in the Kington Chronicle for Spring 2019.

The Election results are in…

Spring is a time of rebirth and change – and this year it brings the same for the Town Council in the form of the four-yearly election for councillors.

We stand for competitive election only if there are more candidates than seats on the Council.

This year we had a total of eleven candidates applying for fifteen positions. That means that we already know who will be on the Council for the next term. Here’s a list of the lucky winners: • • • • • • • • • • •

It’s going to be a common refrain in these pages that we need more and more diverse councillors to join us on the KTC. We want to make sure that our council represents our town appropriately. All we ask is for one Monday evening each month of your time although you can do more if you wish and have the time. If you have ever considered it, please let us know and one of us would be more than happy to give you both information and insight into the pros and cons of membership. The more astute of you will have noticed that we have four vacancies on the council. We can fill these vacancies within 35 days from the date of the election (2 May) without the need for another election. We can do this through a process known as co-option. Annual Town Meeting – it’s your chance to raise public issues The annual Kington Town Meeting will be held on Wednesday 22nd May at 7.30pm at Kington Primary School. On the agenda this year will be the presentation of the Civic Award (see below), a report from the Town Council and from the

Recreation Ground Trust and reports from other voluntary bodies working within the Town. The Town meeting is a meeting of residents, not a meeting of the Town Council, so if there’s anything you would like to see discussed, please let the Town Clerk know, no later than Friday 10th May so that it can be added to the agenda. We look forward to seeing you there.

Recreation Ground – improvements and using for events Those of you who use the Recreation Ground will see that we’ve been investing in new footpaths to make the area more accessible to those with mobility issues and for those with pushchairs or prams. We will also be installing new play equipment in the summer and we now have a smart new fence. All thanks to grant funding from the Tarmac Communities Landfill Fund.

The Recreation Ground is available for everyone to use but we do ask that if you are organising a large activity or group within the Recreation Ground that you check with us first to avoid clashing with another event. Climate Emergency In our March meeting we were pleased to receive a very large (for us) audience of members of the public when we debated the adoption of a Climate Change Emergency. We unanimously approved the motion and have started to look our policies, procedures and activities to see how we can reduce our carbon footprint and support others to do the same. We’ve agreed to set up a working party to look at ways this can be achieved throughout Kington so watch this space for a full report on our findings later.

Elly Ingram Massage Holistic Massage is an individually tailored massage that suits each client’s needs. There is no ‘one size fits all’. I don’t follow a set routine and therefore no two massages will ever be the same.

Then I will leave the room to let you undress and when I return will provide cushions and pillows to make you as comfortable as possible. I work with drapes/sheets to protect your privacy at all times. I use Biotone Advanced Massage Therapy Gel, which is Hypoallergenic.

When the massage has finished I will leave the room to let you dress and then return with a glass of water for you. We will have another chat to see how you are feeling now. If I did some assessments at the start of the session these will be repeated now so we can see (or feel) if there have been any changes. I will then provide some aftercare advise such as stretches or strengthening exercises, or relaxation techniques, that may keep you feeling the benefits until your next session.

There’s something in the air at Spring Greens F’air Spring Greens Environmental Fair will take place this year over the weekend of 4th & 5th May in the beautiful grounds of Court of Noke, Staunton-on-Arrow, through the generosity of Edward Bulmer and his family. This year’s theme is "The Air," from pollution to clouds, there's always a great atmosphere at Spring Greens Fair. Among this year's presenters will be BBC’s Jo Fidgen, bringing her New Year Solutions to Flying.

There will be stalls, exhibitions, local foods, music, art & crafts activities and poetry. The amazing Round Table will host discussion and debate on topical issues including the Climate Emergency and the meteoric rise of Extinction Rebellion.

The Fair will also bring together creative work made by local Primary School children at Court of Noke during Spring Greens Schools Days in the week before the Fair.

There is a £5 charge for car parking but admission is free, so see you there!

Kington Extinction Rebellion Are you worried about climate change? You’re not alone!

Kington XR is a direct-action community activist group campaigning for an urgent political response to the imminent threats posed by climate and ecological breakdown.

The group is part of the rapidly growing Extinction Rebellion movement, which started last autumn in response to the IPCC report that said we have just 12 years to prevent irreversible climate breakdown.

From six friends sitting round a kitchen table in London, the movement now has dozens of groups springing up worldwide, from South Africa to the US, from Japan to the Solomon Islands, from Spain to Australia.

Kington XR held its inaugural meeting at the Oxford Arms in mid-February. On a wet Sunday afternoon, more than 50 people from the local community turned up to pledge their support to the movement.

Events have moved swiftly since then. On 4 March, Kington Town Council voted unanimously to declare a state of climate emergency and to establish a working group comprising council members and local citizens to draw up plans for making the town carbon zero by 2030.

Kington’s lead was followed by Herefordshire Council four days afterwards, when hundreds of people including many young people - crammed into the chamber to hear a similar declaration unanimously voted through.

At a second Kington XR meeting in March, four planning groups were created – local democracy, regenerative culture, arts and action. Those groups are now meeting regularly, and there are monthly whole group meetings to share plans and news.

Kate Bull, one of the founder members of the Kington group, said, “We are facing an unprecedented global emergency, as David Attenborough has said. The government has failed to protect us. To survive, it’s going to take everything we’ve got. The movement welcomes everyone, and every part of everyone, so please join us!” She added that many people were finding new strength and comfort through an active, collaborative commitment to making the planet safe for future generations.

Locally Kington Stall The Locally Kington stall is back at the Kington Friday Market(9-1) in the Market Hall area on April 26th. Lots of folks have been asking about when the stall is due back, which is wonderful.

This is Year 5 of selling crafts and produce from the Kington area. We expect to have some eatables, crafts and other items plus coffee and Fiona’s lovely cakes. The chairs and tables will be out and once again the Place de Marines will be a melting pot of excitement, hubbub and friendship! We are looking for producers or collectors

Kington Art Society is looking for new members and anyone is welcome to drop in to one of our Thursday afternoon meetings in Kingswood Village Hall, Kingswood Road, Kington, to meet members and to see if you would like to join us.

Every artistic level is represented in our members from beginners and those who paint just for pleasure, to retired professional artists.

Over the years the group has had several demonstrations by such artists as David Bellamy, Audrey Bradley, Glyn Whiting, Bill Sneary, Brian Pollard and Ivan Hitchens plus tutorials from Helen Haywood, Peter Horrocks and John Cook, and full day sessions from Peter and Robin Clifton.

The group holds an annual party each year, usually in Spring. Most years the group organises group outings to galleries and places of interest such as Cardiff, Tate Modern Liverpool and other similar galleries. Occasionally in summer, the group has met in member’s gardens and other venues to paint outdoors. We are also planning demonstrations of other artistic activities during our meetings.

There are about 35 members at present, and the membership fee is only £15 per annum to cover such costs as exhibitions and demonstrations.

We pay £1 at each meeting for tea or coffee and biscuits. Winter meeting times are 1pm to 4pm and may change in Summer, when the clocks change, from 2pm to 5pm.

Kington Art Society was formed in 1990 when a group of friends, who painted together in each other’s homes, joined up with others from Whitney and Kingswood, who belonged to an adult education class run by Ron Swanwick. Together they formed the Kington Art Society. Ron was keen to foster an interest in art locally; talks and exhibitions to promote the members’ works were held in various locations.

From 1992 until 2012 exhibitions were held in Kington Market Hall. Since 2017 the group’s exhibitions are held in Kingswood Village Hall.

From May 2018 the annual exhibition is being held to coincide with the Marches Makers Art Festival.
