LEISURE DISCOUNT CARD FOR SEND The Compass Card: fun, free, discounted leisure, helping to shape future provision for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

H

ave you heard of the Compass Card scheme? It’s the leisure discount scheme for children and young people, from birth to 25 years with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), either living or going to school in West Sussex. The scheme provides some fantastic discounts on all things leisure related across West Sussex, Brighton & Hove and the surrounding areas, making fun and leisure more accessible. To be eligible children and young people need to have an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) or receive Disability Living Allowance/Personal Independence Payment (DLA/PIP). Compass Card holders can then access free swimming and hundreds of discounts on things like bowling, soft play, theatre trips, eating out, farms plus many more fun things to do. As well as receiving a Compass Card, children and young people registered will go on the ‘Compass’, which is the Disability Register for West Sussex held by Amaze, an independent charity in Brighton. Coming through the pandemic has left local authorities, and other organisations, with extremely difficult budget decisions to make. The Disability Register informs the Local Authority and helps to shape future provision. All data is held by Amaze and kept secure and confidential. We need to ensure SEND communities in West Sussex are fully represented and have a voice, so we need children and young people signed up to the Compass Card – not only to access some fantastic discounts and benefits, but to also provide the SEND voice in the community. So how do families/guardians apply? Please mention HAYWARDS HEATH Pages when responding to adverts

It’s super quick and easy. If your child or young person has an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) or receives Disability Living Allowance/Personal Independence Payment (DLA/PIP) then they are automatically eligible and an online form can be completed at www.registercompasscard.org.uk. It should take no more than 15 minutes and no further evidence or documentation needs to be submitted. For more information about the Compass Card scheme visit our website; www.compasscard.org.uk or check out our Facebook page or Twitter profile.

WEST SUSSEX COUNTY COUNCIL

MORE CARE WORKERS ARE NEEDED s winter approaches, the care sector in West Sussex will be under increased pressure especially this year with the additional challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. More care workers are needed across the care sector to keep elderly and vulnerable people safe and well. West Sussex County Council’s Adult Social Care’s Winter Plan sets out how West Sussex residents will be supported throughout the winter months. A key element of the plan is to make sure there are enough care workers to support those living in residential care homes and care for people in their own homes. In West Sussex there are currently an estimated 25,000 people working in adult social care, but many more are needed.

A

The county council’s Proud to Care initiative is set up to help anyone thinking of working in care and particularly wants to hear from people who can work in care this winter. The Proud to Care website advertises hundreds of vacancies and contains information, guidance and case studies of others who now work in care. Amanda Jupp, Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, said: “Working in care is so rewarding and offers long term career opportunities for anyone motivated by helping and improving the lives of others. Christmas will be a difficult time for many people this year, so providing care to people that cannot be with their loved ones is, more than ever, vitally important. “Many ideal care workers come from many different backgrounds including retail, hospitality and customer services as they have the transferable people skills needed to be good carers. As we continue to be under restrictions to day to day life a number of people in these industries are facing redundancy so care work offers a great new opportunity.” Former shop manager Lesley now works as a Care Assistant in the Chichester area. She said: “Not only do I feel like I’m giving something back but the people I care for give so much to me too. I feel so valued and appreciated, I wouldn’t go back to working in retail now. To be a good carer you need to be friendly, versatile, quick thinking and enjoy conversation.” Local care providers have a range of vacancies offering full or part time hours and either temporary or permanent contracts. This flexibility is perfect for people looking for work to fit around their lifestyle and family commitments, particularly over Christmas. To find out more about working in care and search for jobs in West Sussex visit www.ProudtoCareWestSussex.com or email www.proudtocare@westsussex.gov.uk

MID SUSSEX DISTRICT COUNCIL

MASTERPLAN PUBLISHED

A

six-week public consultation has been undertaken to give Haywards Heath residents the opportunity to shape how the Town Centre might look in the future and give their views about future community facilities. Mid Sussex District Council has prepared a draft Masterplan for Haywards Heath that sets out a framework to encourage economic recovery, aimed at evolving the town centre into a vibrant location that meets the current and future needs of the community. The Council was keen to hear the views of local people on the draft Masterplan and residents were invited to provide their comments by 21 December. The Masterplan sets out a vision for the future of Haywards Heath; it provides a framework to encourage inward investment, economic recovery and growth by attracting people to live, work and visit. The guiding vision and objectives of the Masterplan are: • Attracting people to visit, work and live in the Town Centre • Retaining and strengthening distinct character areas • Providing opportunities for sustainable travel and improving public realm • Exploring and providing opportunities to

16

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021

improve parking provision • Protecting and enhancing the town’s significant green spaces • Creating positive ‘gateway moments’ to define arrival into the Town Centre • Providing a framework for enhancing opportunities to live in the Town Centre The Masterplan identifies a number of opportunity sites within the Town Centre that have the potential for regeneration and renewal, including The Orchards Shopping Centre, some car parks and the Clair Hall site on Perrymount Road. The Masterplan consultation is opportunity for residents to share their views on the future use of these sites. Once the new Masterplan is adopted, it will replace the Masterplan adopted in 2007 and will help to make decisions on planning applications. The new Masterplan has been informed by the aspirations outlined by Haywards Heath Town Council. Councillor Jonathan Ash-Edwards, Leader of Mid Sussex District Council said: “Everyone knows that town centres and the way we shop have been changing for some time and the Coronavirus pandemic is accelerating many of those trends. Our town centres are at the heart of our local community and it’s vital that they remain vibrant and prosperous places for retail, leisure, business and community activities. “We’ve updated the Haywards Heath Masterplan to reflect the changing needs of our town centre and to provide a blueprint for our future economic recovery, growth and vitality. The consultation also seeks residents’ views about community facilities, to help inform the Council’s business case for the provision of a modern community facility in the town”. CRANACHAN

Preparation time: 15 minutes Serves: 4 INGREDIENTS 75g pinhead oatmeal (you can use rolled oats, but the steel cut pinhead variety are nuttier and less porridge-like) 1 tbsp soft brown sugar 250g raspberries 500ml double cream 4 tbsp honey, plus a little extra to drizzle 4 tbsp good Scottish whisky

eat a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the oatmeal and the sugar then toast, stirring continuously until the sugar has melted and the oatmeal smells sweet and nutty. Pour on to a baking sheet lined with greaseproof paper and leave to cool. Meanwhile, puree 175g of the raspberries until smooth (reserve the best-looking ones). You can leave the seeds or pass through a sieve for a smooth puree. Whip the cream to fairly stiff peaks, then fold in the honey and whisky. Add three quarters of the oatmeal and all the puree to the cream then swirl through to give a ripple effect. Spoon into four glass dishes and top with the

THE WINTER GARDEN but gain a second lease of life when covered with frosted cobwebs. Plants like these will make you want to get out in your garden even in winter, so add a little scent with a winter jasmine or a sarcococca confusa (Christmas box) which has tiny white highly scented flowers. These late flowering plants provide a source of nectar for early pollinators. I no longer tidy my flower beds. I leave piles of fallen leaves and debris in beds to provide shelter for wildlife. f I say ‘winter garden’ what do you imagine? A

Most suburban houses have smaller gardens, easily visible from the house so it’s important to choose plants which look good in more than one season. As well as shrubs with good stem colour, look for smaller trees with pretty bark. There are plenty of small Japanese Maples which can be grown in tubs. If you have a little more space a silver birch can look stunning, or even my favourite, the paper-bark maple, Acer griseum, which is a slow-growing small tree, pretty all year round with crimson leaves in the autumn then a characteristic chestnut bark which peels naturally to reveal bright orange red bark underneath. Look for plants with architectural shapes such as one of the sculptural eryngiums (sea holly), salvias or sedums. All look beautiful in the summer and autumn

NEW OCCURRENCES, STARTS & CHANGES By Kevin Newman, a Sussex-born author, historian, tour guide and history teacher

I thought I’d use this opportunity therefore to examine new occurrences, firsts, start-ups and changes from Sussex’s past. Many find that New Year is a time for new careers
