s the new editor of The Mid Sussex Handbook I would like to welcome you to the first issue under Carnah’s ownership.

Carnah Publications currently publishes Horsham Pages South, Horsham Pages North and Southwater Life and the proximity of The Mid Sussex Handbook makes it a perfect fit for our publishing business.

I would like to thank Sharon and Phil Scott for all their hard work in ensuring a smooth transition of the business and to congratulate them for growing the magazine to cover both Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath over 12 years and building a loyal following of advertisers and readers. The magazine has grown an enviable reputation delivering 24,000 magazines door-to-door in Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath and parts of Lindfield and Cuckfield.

Our team of Dee Ryder (Admin), Gemma Gray

(Sales), Clare West (Distribution) and myself (Editor) will be keen to maintain the community feel of The Mid Sussex Handbook and maintain exactly the same distribution areas. The magazines will continue to have no political affiliations and are open to anyone in the locality to contribute news, views and articles.

There will be gradual improvements in design and content and I welcome any feedback, comments and suggestions.

The main change you will notice is that we have re-branded the magazine to be called Haywards Heath Pages and Burgess Hill Pages and will gradually try to make the editorial more relevant to the areas its distributed in. I look forward to serving the community of Haywards Heath.

MID SUSSEX DISTRICT COUNCIL

OVER £115K TO COMMUNITY PROJECTS

M

id Sussex District Council has provided over £115,000 in funding to help local sports clubs and community organisations improve their facilities and services.

The Mid Sussex District Council Cabinet Grants Panel met on 29 October to discuss grant funding and the allocation of Section 106 developer contributions. The award of £115,494 to the successful applicants was confirmed on Thursday 7 November.

Haywards Heath Tennis Club received £65,040 of S106 funding towards a new wooden clubhouse at Victoria Park in Haywards Heath. The club is keen to help more people discover the health and social benefits that come with regularly playing sport but

their existing 30-year-old building is no longer fit for purpose. The club’s plans include the demolition of the old structure and construction of a new timber clubhouse with electricity, hot water and toilets. The improved facilities will make it possible for the club to run more coaching sessions, particularly for young people.

The Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity was granted £3,478 towards a project that helps young children with Cerebral Palsy and other motor learning impairments to develop together physically, socially and emotionally.

Once a week, children and their parents attend group sessions with a qualified health professional to take part in fun and challenging games and physical activities. For some children, this can mean learning to control their head movements, so they can see what is around them, for others, activities that concentrate on moving, communication and simple life skills such as feeding, drinking and dressing.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day on 8th May 2020 a national three-day celebration will take place from 8th May to 10th May 2020. Mid Sussex District Council would like to support local people in their efforts to mark the occasion and the Cabinet Grants Panel agreed to provide grants of £250 to those who are organising street parties and events for the VE commemoration weekend.

ORCHARD HOUSE RATED OUTSTANDING

A

‘thriving’ West Sussex County Council-run children’s home has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.

Orchard House in Cuckfield provides ‘highly effective services that consistently exceed the standards of good’, inspectors found.

The home accommodates children aged between 5 and 18 who have a learning disability, providing both short-stay and long-term placements.

Ofsted inspectors visited on 2 and 3 September 2019 and in their report heaped praise on the home’s motivated team of staff.

It said: “Children thrive at this home. They benefit from excellent support from a staff team that cares deeply for them."

Relationships between staff and parents are trusting and open, the report says.

Susan Wadey has been the registered manager since 1991 and inspectors praised her ambition which they said is shared by her staff.

Sue said: “Orchard House is a special place where children are at the centre of everything we do. I am so very proud of my dedicated and caring staff and the support they give our children and families. This report is a testament to them and the individual successes we celebrate every day.”

“While the Council secures the maximum possible amount of infrastructure for local communities from private developments, the major advantage of this scheme is that it uses significant amounts of land in public ownership. As one of the landowners of the site, we have worked with the Town Council to shape the development, so that it provides more open space and considerable infrastructure benefits for the town. These include land for a new country park, allotments, cemetery and primary school.”

The community facilities proposed include:New Primary School A new primary school is proposed to the east of Hurstwood Lane, to meet a need identified by the LEA for a new school in the town. id Sussex District Council’s Cabinet has agreed to grant the Ansty Village Centre Trust £100,000 towards a new village hall, sports pavilion and social club for the village.

The Council’s Cabinet met on Monday 18 November to approve the £100,000 funding and to agree a new 150-year lease for the new building and car park. The decision is subject to approval by Full Council on 18 December 2019.

The existing Ansty Village Hall is a dilapidated wooden hut that was gifted to the village following the end of the First World War. When it was shipped over from France the temporary building was originally expected to have a lifespan of 20 years. Unsurprisingly, after more than 100 years of use, it is falling apart and is no longer fit for purpose.

Despite being in such poor condition, the existing village hall is regularly used for sports like darts, snooker, football, stoolball and cricket.

The recreation ground currently attracts around 15,000 visits per year, which is a strong foundation for future growth and with improved facilities it is predicted that the number of users will double within three years.

The new Ansty Village Centre will transform the facilities on offer to villagers and the wider Mid Sussex community. There will be a sizable main hall, professional catering standard kitchen facilities, increased storage, double the amount of sports changing facilities and a significantly enlarged function room with dedicated bar area. The building will also have disabled access throughout, including lift access to the first floor.

The total cost of the project is over £1,400,000 and community groups have worked together alongside local councils to raise money for the project. Funding already secured includes £150,000 from the England and Wales Cricket

Board, £100,000 from Ansty Parish Council and over £219,000 from local community groups.

Mid Sussex District Council has also released £324,443 of Section 106 developer contributions and made an earlier grant of £17,440 to the Ansty Village Hall Trust toward a replacement building.

Liz Bennet, Parish Clerk for Ansty and Staplefield Parish Council said: “This new community building is going to make such a huge difference to our village and will provide some wonderful facilities, not just for Ansty residents but for people in surrounding areas as well.

“When the Ansty Cross pub closed a few years ago it left a large social hole in the village but this new community building gives us the opportunity to create a new social hub that will put the heart back into Ansty.

“The Ansty Village Centre Trust is leading the project but it has been a real collaborative effort between many local groups. Ansty and Staplefield Parish Council, Mid Sussex District Council, Ansty Cricket Club, Ansty Sports and Social Club, the Ansty Village Hall Trust and local businesses have all played a huge part in helping to fund this new community building. It has been wonderful to see the whole community working together to make this dream into a reality.”

Peter Stuart, Mid Sussex District Council Head of Corporate Resources said: “Mid Sussex District Council has been a longterm supporter of this project and this final £100,000 grant, once it is signed off by Full Council, will mean building work can start on site as early as January 2020. Sports and social facilities like this new village centre are such an important part of the local community and I look forward to seeing the finished building when it opens later next year.”

have had chronic pain in my neck and lower back for the last ten years. I’ve had Tourette’s since the age of twelve which is a syndrome that affects the nervous system and causes me to tic, (a small spasm that cannot be controlled) frequently throughout the day.

Tourette’s for me, has been like having a little demon inside of me. If I suppress these demons/tics the more pain I would be in. Sometimes the pain would be so intense that it would make my eyes water. The more pain I was in the more that area would tic, the more I would tic the more I would feel pain.

I was stuck in a self-perpetuating cycle. This has made my life to be a constant struggle.

Being in chronic pain has made my life very difficult with a young family to support. Because of my condition, I sought after medical intervention.

However, the solutions they offered didn’t solve the issue and if anything, the problem was getting worse.

My body felt like it was wearing out.

s days get darker and colder it’s tempting to huddle up, turn up the heating and hibernate until the winter is over. But that really is a waste, so here are some of our favourite ways to beat the winter blues.

Make sure your home is efficiently heated.

Sleep soundly On a cold, grey winter’s morning getting out of bed is effort enough, but it’s even worse if you’ve had a bad night’s sleep. Overheated rooms affect quality of sleep, so a bedroom that is too warm is both wasting energy and affecting your ability to rest properly. According to The Sleep Council the ideal temperature is about 1618 degrees C. See their website for lots more tips on creating the best environment for sleep www.sleepcouncil.org.uk Snuggle up Winter months in the UK are not one consistent temperature, so flexibility is the key to getting the heat levels just right. If you hunker down on an evening or weekend with a box set or the latest series on catch up, remember that you’ll tend to feel colder if you’re sitting still for a long time. Try to move around a bit (well someone has to get up and fetch the hot chocolate…) and treat your sofa to a cosy throw to avoid the temptation to turn up the heat.

Get some fresh air Make the most of sunny winter days with a walk in the woods, local park or the beach. If you have a garden there are always things to do - just remember if you’re clearing up to leave plants and berries and seeds that wildlife might use for food.

Get crafty Making and repairing things is a great way to beat the winter blues. Collect natural materials (and inspiration) on walks, Pinterest is full of ideas for simple artwork - you don’t need to be a great artist. Have a go at up-cycling an old piece of furniture or frame some of those holiday photos to cheer you up when it’s gloomy outside.

anuary is a great time to plant deciduous trees and at this time of year a tree with added winter interest is always a welcome sight. Enter the witch hazel. These lovely trees with their citrusscented spidery flowers are widely sold in garden centres as container-grown plants Look for plants with a number of evenly distributed well-placed branches and avoid those showing signs of stress, damage or disease.

Ideally choose an open, sunny position in the garden. They also work well if planted next to pathways and doors where you can enjoy their gorgeous scent on wintery days.

BACON AND MUSHROOM RISOTTO A tasty and simple New Year supper - Serves 4 Preparation: 10 mins Cooking time: 30 mins fkdobafbkqp=

1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion 8 rashers streaky bacon, chopped 250g chestnut mushrooms, sliced 300g risotto rice 1 litre hot chicken stock Grated parmesan to serve jbqela= Heat the oil in a deep frying pan and fry the onion and bacon gently for 5 mins to soften. Add the mushrooms and cook gently for a further 5 minutes until they start to release their juices. Stir in the rice

and cook until the rice begins to look translucent.

Add the stock, a ladleful at a time, stirring well and waiting for most of the stock to be absorbed before adding the next ladleful â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it will take about 20 mins for all the stock to be absorbed.

Once the rice is cooked, season and serve with the grated Parmesan.

HOW I BEAT TYPE 2 DIABETES When his diabetes doctor suggested he should share how he put his diabetes into remission, John Spring went one better, he wrote a humorous book about it.

I

’ve now been in remission from type 2 diabetes (T2D) for eight years, so I guess I must be doing something right. Being in remission means that T2D isn’t damaging me anymore. The newly diagnosed will have been made well aware of the longer-term havoc it can do to their bodies. Unless, when they were told, they put their fingers in their ears and started humming, “La, la, la, I’m not listening”. Which is exactly what I did for several years.

5% of the UK’s adult population have been diagnosed with T2D, and another 1.3% don’t know they have it yet. By the year 2035, 10% of us will be type 2 diabetic. That might make the recently diagnosed feel a little better, as there is some safety in numbers, but the NHS isn’t too keen on the prospect.

New patients may not be feeling any immediate effects of T2D, so it becomes easy to be complacent.

You can liken it to a mild acid flowing around your body, slowly eating away at your nerves, your organs and your eyes. It is the end of this slow production line of diabetic damage that the NHS is now contending with.

I’d read about rapid weight loss having a high success rate in putting T2D into remission and the NHS is now trialling liquid-based diets of 800 calories per day. There’s also bariatric surgery, but it isn’t infallible as a patient’s bad eating habits can find ways around it. Likewise, you probably don’t want to survive on liquids for the rest of your life, especially if they don’t contain alcohol.

I devised my own practical regime for losing weight fast. The most positive benefit of this workable approach was that I learned how to avoid temptation by becoming the master of my own food. I also learned how to fit exercise into my busy life. These are the lessons that have kept me in remission.

I started by identifying the heavy hitters in my diet. I then developed workarounds to drastically reduce my consumption of those. I also preprepared my own breakfast and lunch, thus avoiding the calorific temptations lurking in coffee shops and lunchtime sandwich bars. My home cooked dinners featured healthier ingredients and I soon realised that there really is no such thing as a low-calorie takeaway. They are all evil.

I discovered convenient exercise by walking set routes every day and I built up to being the world’s most unlikely runner. After four months I had lost four stone and my blood sugar came down from 60 mmol to 42mmol (48 mmol is the diabetic threshold). Most importantly I’d also equipped myself with the knowledge of how to maintain that weight loss.

The low-calorie liquids or the surgeon’s knife may well kick T2D into remission, but they’re arduous procedures to undertake. Staying in remission is also hard work, but that has been made easier for me by using a new lifestyle to beat this lifestyle related disease.

LEONARDSLEE NOW OPEN Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens is now open to the public throughout the period November to March for the first time in its history. The estate will only close on Christmas day.

Popular woodland areas to visit in the gardens to see the autumn colours include the American Hickory trees, with fluorescent yellow leaves;

Kasura or Candy Floss trees, whose unusual ovalshaped leaves change to a light orange colour and produce a strong fragrance of burnt sugar; Black Gum trees, a brilliant red and yellow; the North American oaks that tower over the garden; and the Swamp Cypresses with their dazzling orange colours, found along the edges of the lakes.

Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens opened to the public on April 6th 2019 after a decade’s closure.

The opening followed two years’ major restoration work on the Grade 1 Listed gardens and on-site facilities by Penny Streeter OBE who acquired the estate in 2017.

The extensive garden collection of plants from around the world dates from 1888, when Sir Edmund bought Leonardslee from his in-laws.

From this period, parties were invited to visit the estate, which continued in the ownership of the Loder family until 2010.

HORSHAM DISTRICT IN 100 OBJECTS

A

land of castles, lakes and a dragon demands an amazing book to tell its story. And that is what has been crafted. Using over 230 photographs and 100,000 words, The Heritage of Horsham District in 100 objects, explores and celebrates the land that lies between Gatwick and Brighton. Using 100 objects as signposts, the book by Horsham Museum Curator Jeremy Knight and edited by Michael Burt, Chairman of the Horsham District Heritage Forum, draws on objects put forward by the Forum to tell a 100 million year old story through 13 themes and so creates a real eye opener.

Very few towns in the world have a dinosaur named after it, but Horsham does, the Horshamosaurus, so that became object 1 in the list of 100. But then the story explored the telling of the other dinosaur finds in the District including the Great Horsham Iguanodon,(no 2) the inspiration for the Crystal Palace/Sydenham Park Victorian creation.

However, the biggest surprise was the discovery made by the Horsham Archaeological Group of a Mural Crown Pot, (no 8) not well known in the world of Roman archaeology, but an amazing pot that combines both Roman architectural prowess and religious beliefs. This complements the Wiggonholt water cistern or water tank (no 9) bearing the Christian symbol, now on display at Parham House, which itself is one of the 100 objects.

One decision made early on was that the objects did not have to be small, portable affairs, but could be man-made structures. Therefore, the Wey and Arun canal that pops in and out of the District features as no 17 in the 100 objects. The creation of a waterway from London to Portsmouth to avoid the French fleet during the Napoleonic Wars made a fascinating story and the fact that today the heritage item has been “re-purposed” as a leisure resource, provides an added

dimension. The canal did not feature in the Transport chapter, but in Warfare along with the cannons (no 16) that were the gateposts to the Napoleonic military depot in Horsham. Obviously in a land of castles, lakes and a dragon, the castles of Knepp (14) and Bramber (13) are included, Bramber being the most prominent, Knepp, because of its military history, the stone of part of which was used to build the A24 which is another interesting story.

Some stories are poignant, covering themes which resonate with the world today; such as the posters for the abolition of slavery (33), over 200 years old and yet still a contemporary issue; back then as an emotive a subject as Brexit is today. Last year the nation marked Women’s Suffrage, which was celebrated in Henfield with two mosaics; they feature in the book at number 36 along with the barely known stories of Henfield ladies’ involvement in the movement, a story that involved an American actress who settled in Henfield and entertained noted guests, as shown in the Backsettown Visitor book (37).

The book, published by Horsham Museum as part of the Horsham District Council’s Year of Culture, also covers themes such as Work, from the Wealden iron firebacks (no 63) which act as a signpost to tell the heritage of the iron industry, to a poster for Walter Wood’s mower (67), a paper record of an important local industry, whilst the Patriot Engineers, a Horsham based company, established only for the duration of WWII is recorded through a commemorative brochure (68).

As opposed to work, the chapter on Play includes cricket, the sport of the District, with over a 300 year old legacy from the earliest known local match recorded in 1719 at Henfield; the story of cricket is highlighted by an unusual shop sign (pictured right) , a set of cricket stumps (82). Its ancestor, stoolball is illustrated with a rare postcard (83) of an early 20th century match at Cowfold, and football a photograph of an amateur side, Carfax United (pictured left) from 1902-3 (84). The sport that died out, bull baiting, which in Horsham went out of fashion in 1813 is recounted using the bull ring (87).

Agriculture has always been a feature of the District’s life. Therefore, from Bramber the book includes a charming portrait of George Bailey (61), whose life story stands for the life of the shepherd and farmworker. From Cowfold Capons Farm ( 55) is used to illustrate the yeoman farmer, while the Tithe Barn from Sullington Manor (57) illustrates another aspect of agricultural and farming life.

The Heritage of Horsham District in 100 Objects is a culmination of over 30 years working with the District’s heritage. It is a fascinating account and will hopefully encourage people to discover more about the area they live or work in.

indsight is a wonderful thing. We often reflect on the past year and mourn chances we didn’t take or connections we didn’t make. Instead of looking longingly backwards, perhaps 2020 is a good year to develop your vision for the future so that it’s…well…20/20!

Review your goals — short and long-term Are your everyday activities helping you to accomplish your short-term goals? Are you working on meaningful projects? Make sure at least some of your daily activities help you to accomplish your short-term goals, and that those short-term goals can build to let you accomplish larger goals and objectives.

But don't be a slave to your goals. It's okay to change directions and shift deadlines. January is a great time revaluate. Are your long-term goals from six months ago still relevant to you today?

It can be helpful to write down your goals using pen and paper, and then hang them in a place where you can see them. This acts as a visual prompt to remind you and inspire you during the day-to-day grind.

Nurture relationships Sometimes friendships and family relationships get placed on the backburner when we're busy. Are there If there friends and relatives in your contacts list who you haven’t spoken with lately? Use this season to catch-up, reconnect, and nurture the relationships that matter.
