HOW THE WORLD HAS CHANGED

I

ts incredible how our way of life has changed so much in such a short space of time. However, this national emergency and ‘Lock Down’ has brought out the best of communities and highlighted the need for everyone to look locally for sourcing help and support. This drastic change in life has also created some unexpected benefits such as cleaner air and a reduced carbon footprint. And its how our communities and businesses adjust and adapt to this new world order that is key. After our in-house team started distributing the April editions we were of course disrupted by the Government ‘stay at home’ advice. Overnight, we had to adapt by using the Royal Mail Door-to-Door distribution service in order to ensure that all copies of the magazines were

distributed - which is how this edition has been delivered. In particular, I would like to thank our advertisers for supporting us in these extremely challenging conditions. I would also like to thank our readers who have risen to the challenge of supporting the weak and vulnerable with deliveries of food and medicines. And we hope our magazines can do there bit by highlighting what products and services are available locally. Although it is an extremely testing time for everyone, there is a lot to be said for being more locally centric, if only for the good of the planet. DON’T FALL FOR CORONAVIRUS SCAMS

W

est Sussex Trading Standards is warning residents to watch out for coronavirus related scams. Fake emails claiming to be from the government, shops selling false protective masks, and rogue traders offering coronavirus testing are some of the scams people need to be wary of. Here are some of the most common scams to look out for at the moment: • Be aware of people offering cures or vaccines for coronavirus – there is no specific treatment for coronavirus (COVID-19). Treatment aims to relieve the symptoms until you recover. • Home cleaning services - be aware of false claims.

8

MAY/JUNE 2020

• People impersonating healthcare workers, claiming to be offering ‘hometesting’ for coronavirus – this is a scam and these kits are not currently available to buy. • Emails saying that you can get a refund on taxes, utilities, or similar are usually bogus and they are just after your personal and bank details. • There are lots of fake products available to buy online that say they can protect you or cure coronavirus. These will not help and are designed to take your money. Richard Sargeant, West Sussex Trading Standards Team Manager, said: “As a result of social distancing, some people are more isolated than ever before and are particularly vulnerable to scams. “I urge residents to be wary. Only open emails and attachments from trustworthy sources, don’t open the door to people you don’t know and only buy from reputable brands and businesses.” Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “It is more important than ever for us to support our elderly and vulnerable friends and family members and help protect them against these sorts of scams. “Even if you can’t see each other in person, make sure you stay in touch over the phone or social media and watch out for signs that the person is being targeted by a scam.” Use the Citizen’s Advice online Scam Checker to help recognise a scam. Anyone concerned about scams can get advice from the Citizens Advice Scams Action helpline on 03444 111 444.

LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND

T

he Town Mayor has launched a ‘Leave No One Behind’ campaign in Haywards Heath, working with Haywards Heath Covid-19 Mutual Aid, to help the community in these unprecedented times Cllr Alastair McPherson, Town Mayor of Haywards Heath comments: “We live in unprecedented times. On Monday evening I and my fellow Councillors resolved at a Meeting of the Full Council to close the Town Hall building for the foreseeable future, based on government guidance about limiting gatherings of people. At this meeting we also agreed upon a plan to support our older and more vulnerable residents in our Town. This is a difficult and scary time for many residents of our Town and we have agreed to do all we can to help the community in this extraordinary time. It’s now Thursday and we are launching our community network response to support this most important section of our community and ‘Leave No One Behind’ as they potentially self-isolate for the next few weeks. It is hoped that the vast majority of our residents will experience few issues, except perhaps a change in their day to day activities, but we must be proactive and protect anyone who is older and more vulnerable in our society. It is all of our responsibility to ‘Leave No One Behind’, so I’m here to explain what Hayward Heath Town Council is rolling out for our community and Town over the next few days. This is by no means a perfect solution at this stage but please engage if you can and Please mention HAYWARDS HEATH Pages when responding to adverts

if you are able to… Over the past 36 hours we have formulated a plan for the Town. Haywards Heath is divided into 5 Wards. Your Councillor’s names, numbers and e-mail address can be found on the HHTC website now and they will be coordinating the strategy to ‘Leave No One Behind’. Working with community groups within the Town and Wards, we will be asking healthy and able residents to help support our more vulnerable residents. We will be putting out a call for volunteers within the Wards to deliver information cards to all addresses. Based on a response to these cards we will then be able to map out, street by street, where are our more vulnerable residents are and ensure they have the appropriate support over the next few weeks. For those on social media and the internet we will also be active on Facebook, Skype platforms and the HHTC Website. We will be building on the community network we are fortunately to already have in Haywards Heath. I would urge everyone to get involved if they can or are able to. Please help out by completing this form and with distribution in the first instance – there will be other activities as this intervention evolves – so as community we can start to protect those that most need our support into the future. We are setting up an emergency number and emergency email address to coordinate this endeavor. Please only use this if you’re in real hardship. The HH Town Council Emergency number is 01444 455694 (9am – 5pm) 07384 289668 and email is town.clerk@haywardsheath.gov.uk MAY/JUNE 2020

Proposed street scenes.

Background MSDC is currently looking to add or "allocate" sites to their 5 year housing land supply. This is called the Site Allocation process. This is significant because the process allows new sites, not currently allocated (like Haywards Heath Golf Course), to be considered for development. At the beginning of September 2019 MSDC published a "draft list" (of 22 new sites) which was put forward as part of the Site Allocation Development Plan process to select new residential development sites. Haywards Heath Golf Course was not chosen as one of the 22 sites (that will provide another 1,962 new homes up to the end of 2031). However, this decision is not set in stone until the “final list” is published later in 2020. Following the release of the new “draft list” of sites, there was a consultation (in planning parlance this is called Regulation 18 – Issues and Options Consultation) period between 9th October and 20th November. This was open to the general public, developers and landowners to make representations . Our campaign engaged in this process and made our views known in support of excluding the Golf Course from future residential development. Please mention HAYWARDS HEATH Pages when responding to adverts

MSDC has recently published a summary report on the feedback received during the Regulation 18 consultation period. We are currently reviewing this report to see what it means for our campaign. See link to MSDC planning information which details the latest information on the Site Allocation Development Plan process: www.midsussex.gov.uk/planningbuilding/development-plan-documents/ Latest News Fairfax, a local developer, have submitted an outline planning application (reference DM/20/0559 - click www.pa.midsussex.gov.uk/online-applications to see application) to build 725 new homes on the golf course land, in what will probably be the first phase of the scheme. The application has been submitted despite the fact the site has not be allocated for residential development in the recent Site Allocation Development Plan process. This seems a strange strategy but may be driven by the expiry of various options to purchase land at both Haywards Heath and Lindfield Golf CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

HELP OUR NHS

PRINCESS ROYAL HOSPITAL APPEAL

A

fund raising campaign has been launched to make sure NHS Staff at BSUH NHS Trust have the resources and support they need to fight coronavirus whilst remaining healthy, energised and well-rested. This includes our 4 hospitals in Brighton, Hove and Mid Sussex including The Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. Our teams are working around the clock to make sure we're ready for what may come in regards to coronavirus. They are preparing, ensuring patients receive the care they need. They will be stretched. They will be tested. They will be magnificent. They have years of medical, clinical and management training that they will utilise to look after our mums, grandfathers, neighbours, friends, and our families. We want to ensure these same staff have

whatever they need, now and in the months to come, to be healthy, supported and well-rested. Funds raised here will be used to specifically support the dedicated NHS staff working to tackle Covid-19 in areas like the Intensive Care Unit, special isolation wards, and all other areas that are impacted by the pandemic. Your donation will provide practical help for things like food delivery during long shifts and care boxes (so the nurses, doctors, porters, health care assistants, cleaners and other staff can always get a cup of tea, coffee, and some snacks). Please donate today and help us make a difference at The Princess Royal Hospital. Let's support the NHS staff who are going above and beyond for us. Alternatively, it may be a result of discussions behind the scene with MSDC and as such it is important to review the representations made during the recent consultation to see if anything has been identified that would lead to MSDC adding new sites to the “draft list”. The Development A local developer, Fairfax, propose to acquire 100 acres of land comprising Haywards Heath Golf Club (HHGC) and have indicated previously they will help relocate the Golf Club to an extended and improved Lindfield Golf Club. A planning application has been submitted for 725 new homes in phase 1 of the development, as recently detailed in a leaflet circulated by Fairfax.

Concerns • Loss of of Beautiful Lindfield Countrside Haywards Heath Golf Course has numerous public footpaths offering the chance to enjoy the beautiful setting. This would undoubtedly be affected by any new development. It also sets a dangerous precedent that developers could exploit leading to further losses of precious countryside. Green spaces has been shown to have a positive effect on mental health: www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment25682368 • Pressure on local services Pressure on local services such as doctor's surgeries, hospital, train services, car parking, school places etc. • Traffic / Highways issues Increased traffic and concerns over road safety. High Beech Lane is already a very busy road. • Disruption Approximately 10 years of a vast building site and associated disruption and noise. • Flood risk Please mention HAYWARDS HEATH Pages when responding to adverts

HEALTH & WELLBEING

CONSTANTLY TIRED?

T

iredness and fatigue are fairly common nowadays. As we adopt a faster pace of life, we forget, or simply have no time to pause, rest and reflect. Constantly stretching ourselves to the limits can leave us fatigued, both mentally and physically. Here are some of the factors that can cause fatigue. Medical causes There is a vast number of medical conditions that can deplete energy, including anaemia, chronic fatigue syndrome/ME, diabetes, underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) and coeliac disease. Fatigue can also be present when you experience extreme thirst, a change in bowel habits or weight-loss. Lifestyle causes The way we live our lives is constantly changing as we adapt to the demands of the contemporary world. As a result, we can exacerbate or contribute to fatigue by: • Drinking too much caffeine (coffee, energy drinks etc) and alcohol • Working long hours/night shifts, or long commutes • Not exercising enough • Not sleeping well or long enough • Eating an unhealthy diet which can lead to nutritional deficiencies • Having little time to relax and recover • Experiencing chronic stress Psychological causes Depression and anxiety are often linked to tiredness. People who suffer with mental health problems may have trouble falling asleep and sleeping through the night, which may lead to exhaustion. Not eating enough can also add to the problem as can doing no physical activity.

16

MAY/JUNE 2020

Nutrition and tiredness Not eating the right type of food or getting the right nutrients can also cause you to feel tired. A nutritious diet can address underlying nutrient deficiencies and allow the body to restore health, but it’s important to remember that there isn’t a magic bullet nor one nutrient that will make us healthy. It’s all about balancing your meals so that you’re providing your body with everything it needs to function at its best. A nutritionist can provide expert advice and support to help you make safe and effective changes to your diet and lifestyle in order to combat tiredness. But here are a few things you can start applying today: • Avoid refined carbohydrates such as sweets, cakes, chocolates, sodas. Apart from calories, they provide you with little or no nutritional value. Refined carbohydrates disrupt your blood glucose levels, leaving you hungry, tired and irritable. Instead, opt for complex carbohydrates with high fibre content such as beans, lentils, whole grains, vegetables and fruit. • Caffeine is a stimulant so it can “give” you energy, but too much caffeine, especially on an empty stomach, can leave you tired, and it can also affect your sleep. • Dehydration is one of the main causes of tiredness, so have at least 6-8 glasses of water a day. Any medical conditions should be managed by your doctor, but it’s important to look at fatigue from a holistic perspective and address anything that can be lacking in terms of movement, sleep, relaxation, and of course, food. www.annapinnock.co.uk

eel and finely chop the onions and carrots (or substitutes). Trim and finely chop the celery, and peel and finely chop the garlic. Dice the bacon, ham or smoked tofu. Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large pan over a medium heat, add the bacon, ham or tofu and fry slowly until crispy, then crumble in the dried chilli or add the chilli flakes or powder, and add the dried thyme, onion, carrot, celery and garlic. Cook gently with the lid on for about 15 minutes, or until all the vegetables are soft, then add the lentils and 1 litre water or vegetable stock. Bring to the boil and simmer until the lentils are soft. If you’re using mixed lentils, choose the longest cooking time listed on the packets (so if mixing green and red that would be the cooking time of the green lentils.) Drain the beans or peas and add them to the soup. Thin the soup with water if required. Bring the soup back to the boil and simmer for another 10 minutes. Taste and season as required. Ladle into bowls and serve with bread. HAYWARDS HEATH Pages To advertise call 01403 588618 or visit www.midsussexhandbook.co.uk

GUIDED BY NATURE

E

stablished in 1972, by Janet and Rodney Pratt, Bolney Wine Estate in West Sussex was one of the first, and remains one of the most beautiful, English wine estates. Janet and Rodney were pioneers. Guided by nature – the mild climate and the sandstone soil – they discovered the best varieties of grapes to grow in their eco-system. Today, their daughter, Sam Linter, heads up the family business having inherited her parents’ love and passion for making wine. Sam, along with her expert team, produces award-winning still and sparkling wines from our famous Pinot Noir and Estate Bacchus to our classic sparkling Bolney Bubbly and Blanc de Blancs. Bolney has become synonymous with quality wine in a contemporary style. At Bolney, they are more than just a vineyard and provide a great day out for all the family too. They offer a range of tours which include the Taster Tour, the Grand Gourmet Tour, and their brand new Dinner at Dusk Tour (which includes a 5 course tasting menu paired with wines). Whichever tour

you choose you will get to sample their awardwinning wines. And don’t forget their Vineyard Trail, which is designed for all the family to enjoy. After your tour, you can enjoy a wide range of seasonal dishes made using locally sourced produce and relax as you sip on a glass of your favourite wine on their stunning viewing balcony overlooking the ripening vines. Finish with a visit to their shop where you can take away a bottle or two to continue the experience at home. 2020 is a very exciting time for Bolney Wine Estate with lots of new developments underway. Launching this summer, Bolney are set to create a truly unique vineyard experience. Bolney Wine Estate are passionate about what they do; both at their vineyard and in the community, making award winning wines, and creating a haven of peace and tranquillity in the Sussex countryside where visitors can learn about the wine industry and enjoy some time away from their busy daily lives. Visit bolneywineestate.com to find out more.
