Ian Mackenzie BA ’25
(King's Scholar Program) Honours Specialization in History
When I came to King’s, I was nervous. I came from Ottawa, six hours away, and didn’t know a single person. But within a month, I was calling London home.
What really made the difference was my first class with Dr. Broad. That was the moment I realized: yeah, I can do a history degree. I can enjoy four years of this. The transition to university life became so much easier because King’s is just so welcoming.
When I heard about small class sizes, I pictured something like high school. But it’s nothing like that — because now, you’re learning from experts who are passionate about what they teach. They want to make you passionate too. That’s not something you fully understand until you get here, but it’s one of the best things about being at King’s.”

Heather Marshall BA ’10

The four years I spent at King’s were some of the best of my life, for so many reasons. I knew upon graduation that I was well-equipped to move on to the next stage of my education - my Master’s degrees - and after that, the work world. But even then, I never could have predicted the striking impact my King’s education would have on my future career as an author. The history courses I undertook ignited my passion for storytelling, providing rich narratives that continue to inspire my work. The curriculum’s emphasis on critical thinking and scholarly inquiry equipped me with tools that have been invaluable in the research I do as part of my writing process. I can never recommend King’s enough to any high school grad looking for the best place to broaden their mind and spark a lifelong love of education.”

Clubs are a great way to meet friends, expand your interests, and build leadership skills that last long after graduation. As part of the Western campus, you also have access to Western’s 200+ clubs.
Volunteering
Give back while gaining experience. Support your peers through the King’s Academic Mentoring Program (KAMP), lend a hand at St. Joe's Cafe (a local community outreach centre), or get involved in local community organizations. Don’t miss the annual Volunteer Fair, where you can connect with nonprofits looking for student volunteers.
Athletics
Interested in playing varsity sports? Consider studying at King’s while playing for Western. King’s is home to more than 150 Western varsity athletes. They choose to study at King’s because of the support they receive from professors and staff alike. Not playing at the varsity level, but still interested in playing sports? You can join the King’s men’s basketball team or you can play on one of 20 intramural sports teams at Western. Simply looking for a place to work out? King’s has our own fitness facilities located in the Student Life Center or access Western's Student Recreation Centre with your student card.
KING’S UNIVERSITY COLLEGE WAS THE EXACT RIGHT CHOICE FOR ME TO COMPLETE MY UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES AND LAY THE FOUNDATION FOR MY PROFESSIONAL CAREER.
HEADING INTO MY TIME AT KING'S, I WAS PLAYING JUNIOR HOCKEY. I WAS TOLD BY AN IMPORTANT HIGH SCHOOL MENTOR, "SOCIAL, SCHOOL, SPORTS - YOU CAN ONLY DO TWO". THE SMALL CLASS SIZES ALLOWED FOR MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS WITH PROFESSORS WHO GENUINELY CARED ABOUT MY ACADEMIC, SOCIAL AND PERSONAL GROWTH. BECAUSE OF THAT CARE FROM PROFESSORS AND SUPPORT FROM THE KING'S COMMUNITY - WHICH INCLUDED FINANCIAL SUPPORT THROUGH AWARDS AND CONTINUING SCHOLARSHIPSI WAS ABLE TO DO ALL THREE.”

King’s challenged me to lead, to listen, and to fight for what matters, both in the classroom and beyond. These years pushed me to grow, and I’m proud of the person I’ve become.”
Laura served as President of the King’s University College Students’ Council (KUCSC) and held numerous leadership roles throughout her degree.
The small class sizes and close connections with professors helped me build confidence, get involved, and grow into leadership. King’s helped turn my goals into reality.”

Mike Lawless BA ’02 History Head of Apple Music
In my opinion, King's is a unique oasis in the Canadian university landscape - it is a home away from home, a place where lifelong friendships are built, where professors care about the success of their students, where staff want to make the experience as positive as possible, and where students are given the education, the opportunity and the confidence that is so necessary to finding success and happiness in the world in which we live.”
The well-rounded education I received at King’s laid a strong foundation for the skills I’ve relied on to launch and grow my own company... The program’s emphasis on critical thinking, clear communication, and creative problem-solving has been instrumental in helping me navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship.”

The King's experience was essential to the success I have had today in my career in public service for the Government of Canada. I was able to take advantage of so many opportunities. From being the president of the Political Science Students' Association to participating in various experiential learning opportunities such as international travel experiences, the school's environment was built for the optimal student experience. I am eternally grateful to the school for giving me the experiences needed for a successful career, and in particular, the academic and professional experiences that I still draw upon today.
King's was like a second home to me - I would recommend to any student thinking about postsecondary education to consider King's University College as their top choice.”
King’s was a small school—but it made a big mark on my life. Its size made it easy to feel at home, to raise your hand, and to dive in. The faculty were exceptional. People like Professor Trevor Hunter pushed me to think deeper, aim higher, and love learning. I also made lifelong friends at King’s—and the kind of memories you still laugh about years later. I never imagined I’d one day serve in this role. But the truth is, King’s gave me the foundation— intellectually and personally—to get here. Thank you to the entire King’s community for your commitment to excellence.”
