Our Chartered Management Institute class of 2013 pass with flying colours Kingston Voluntary Action has supported 7 managers from local organisations to gain a Chartered Management Institute level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership at Kingston College.

The Diploma is widely recognised as being the leading qualification for managers looking to enhance their skills and gain a recognised qualification. The course was offered as part of our Transforming Kingston Infrastructure Project (TKI), funded by the Big

Fund on behalf of the Office for Civil Society.

Project Coordinator Sanja Kane said “All managers reported that the course had strengthened their existing knowledge, but also given them new management skills and tools and new approaches to successful leadership.

The course has also been a great platform for managers to network, exchange experiences and gain better understanding of each other’s work”.

Here comes the bride for the Kingston Run Challenge in October Chief Executive of Surrey Save, Michelle Boundy, will be running the Kingston Run Challenge this October in her wedding dress to fundraise for Love Kingston. Love Kingston is the official nominated charity for the Kingston Run Challenge 2013, managed by Human Race.

“13th of October is my first wedding anniversary!” says Michelle. “Myself and Francis have been together ten years and tied the knot in Windsor last year, so I thought if I’m going to do the Kingston Challenge on our first anniversary then I better acknowledge that and wear my frock and bring my flowers!

Francis will be there on the day to hold my bouquet for me!

I haven’t run 8 miles before – I’ve done a few 10ks and am looking forward to seeing how I do on a longer distance. I completed the Windsor Triathlon this year so I’ve done some training but it will be a challenge to run that far.

SurreySave is a social enterprise – we earn money from the interest on our loans, but we will not be sustainable for another four years, and in the meantime rely on grant funding to pay for operations. We don’t therefore have the large marketing budgets that other lenders have so you won’t see us on TV but you will see us out in our community raising awareness of credit unions where we can.

Running the Kingston Challenge is one way we can raise awareness of SurreySave in Kingston and let people know that there is a better alternative to payday lenders!“ SurreySave is one of five local projects supported by Love Kingston. Money raised by the Run Challenge will be divided equally between the projects and the Kingston Legacy Fund.

Success for smooth sailing Love Kingston Dragon Race boat Sunday 21st July saw rowers from Kingston Voluntary Action and local organisations take to the Thames to raise money for Love Kingston. Smooth sailing by our fantastic fundraisers meant that the Love Kingston boat finished in 30th place out of 49 - and 11th out of 24 in the mixed team category - a great team effort!

Tim Isterling from Kingston Foodbank, who took part in all three races, said he really enjoyed the event: “It was a great day out, I had lots of fun and I will definitely do it again next year.”

Colin Cregan from Superhighways enjoyed his time on the water: “It was a sunny day and we had a good team together, we

didn’t make the finals, but we had a lot of fun.”

We are grateful to Kingston Chamber of Commerce and George P Johnson who also kindly took part in two additional boats to raise vital funds for Love Kingston.

Shared Heritage launches textile and craft project in Kingston Shared Heritage, an arts and heritage organisation currently specializing in textiles and crafts, has just launched the Harmony Project, a new design and textile project based on the work of 19th century designer Christopher Dresser funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council.

Over the course of 2013-14 Shared Heritage will be working across six south London boroughs, including Kingston. The project will work with nine community centres or groups in these boroughs including young carers, the elderly, refugee and disability groups and those diagnosed with cancer and their families.

The project will give participants the opportunity to design and make products including bags, wallets, cushions, scarves, key fobs and aprons as part of a series of

workshops. A dedicated website will feature blogs, images and learning materials to promote the project further.

Children and young people to take over Kingston for a day Friday 22nd November is a chance for children and young people to takeover Kingston for the day! Children’s Takeover Day is a national event run by the Office of the Children’s Commissioner giving children and young people the chance to work with adults for the day and be involved in decision making.

The day is designed for children and young people aged 18, or 21 if they are leaving care, to get involved. Moor Lane Children’s Centre is inviting children and young people to spend the day at the centre. KVA’s Chief Executive, Hilary Garner and the Young Carers project at Kingston Carers Network will also be involved, alongside Kingston Council.

Maggie Atkinson, Children’s Commissioner for England said “Organisations get the opportunity to show their commitment to their communities and tell us they gain a fresh perspective on what they do, often with new solutions.

Every sector can take part- it’s a flexible event which can be tailored to suit your needs.”

The Takeover Day is a great opportunity for voluntary and community organisations to involve young people in their work.

Age Watch health website secures Information Standard Age Watch, a national health information website set up in Kingston upon Thames, has recently achieved Information Standard accreditation. The certification scheme is commissioned by the Department of Health to ensure health information provided aims to be clear, accurate, balanced, evidence based and up to date.

Age Watch website offers information on a wide range of health topics, as well as health quizzes, reviews of health books which provide new evidence or fresh perspectives and news from health conferences and seminars.

Welcome to the new Kingston Filipino British Community Ltd A newly formed organisation in Kingston held its inaugural induction of officers on 27 September at Shiraz Mirza Manor Trust Hall, New Malden. Kingston Filipino British Community Ltd is a non profit charitable organisation of Filipinos and British living in Kingston upon Thames.

The idea of forming an organisation was conceived on a chance meeting of two individuals who undertook a survey to determine if there was a need to unify and mobilise Filipinos living in the borough. The formation of a new organisation received overwhelming endorsement.

A first meeting was held on 22 May 2013 to draw up and vote on the vision, purpose and objectives of the new unified, vibrant community organisation.

The aim of the Kingston Fillipino British Community is to: preserve Filipino values, customs and traditions; promote the educational, civic, social and cultural needs of the community through information, guidance and training; foster friendship, understanding, unity, and cooperation with

Community Hub update The Kingston’s Community Hub became a few steps closer to reality after a seminar was held recently. Organised by Michael Green, the Community Hub Project Coordinator, local VCS groups listened to and engaged with a series of speakers who outlined the progress made to ensure Kingston gets a Community Hub. Attendees include Cllrs Green and Davis, Leader and Deputy Leader of the Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames (RBK), officers including Karl Limbert from RBK Property and Jill Darling from the RBK Voluntary Sector Unit plus many from the local voluntary sector including Hilary Garner, KVA’s Chief Executive.

Michael Green commented “this was a

valuable meeting which went a long way to taking this important project further. Local organisations now have a clear understanding of what, when and how the Community Hub project will progress and what contributions all sides will make”.

Grants for voluntary groups 2014-15 from Kingston Council Are you a local voluntary or community group looking for grant funding, perhaps to cover general running costs or one-off events and activities in areas such as social welfare, arts, sports, play, youth, environmental or cultural activities?

If you are, then you are invited to apply for a grant from Kingston Council for the 201415 financial year, for the following grant schemes:  Community Investment Grants  New Initiatives and Emerging Needs In addition, to complement the network of Strategic Partners set up in 2013/14, applications are welcome for Strategic Partner status from organisations representing the following sub-sectors:  Young people  Mental Health  Environment

Sports England Grants To Help More People Play Sport Grants of up to £10,000 are available to sport groups that need support to open up more sporting opportunities for their community.

If you are considering applying for a grant they encourage you to complete their preapplication checklist as a first step.

The initiative funds the capital costs of building projects by allowing groups to create advertisements for a range of projects including new green spaces, rejuvenated sports facilities or a new playground for children. It is free to upload pictures and a small administration fee will be charged if the funding goal is reached.

The Big Give connects charities with donors and philanthropists with charities and projects of interest. The Big Give website is free to all users and showcases over 9,500 charities. Fifty charities will be supported by the Cabinet Office during the 2013 Big Give Christmas Challenge which begins on the 5th December 2013.

GO KINGSTON VOLUNTEERING Celebrating over 40 years of volunteering in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames

Say hello to Kathryn our new Buddy Scheme Coordinator Hello I’m Kathryn Smith, the new Coordinator of the Buddy Scheme at Go Kingston Volunteering. This is the scheme that uses volunteers to help people with learning disabilities take part in leisure activities.

I’ve been in post since the end of July and have been making contact with volunteers, service users and referrers. I’m really looking forward to the challenge of expanding the scheme and bringing new service users and volunteers together.

I’ve been catching up with current volunteers and hearing about their regular activities such as trips to museums, visits to Richmond Park, shopping and cinema outings plus the more energetic cycling in Bushy Park and zumba classes!

There are so many opportunities for leisure activities in Kingston and so much enthusiasm for volunteering at the moment that this feels like an exciting time to be involved with such a scheme.

I also work on a national helpline and my background is in working with volunteers. My

RideLondon relies on volunteers A big thank you to the large number of volunteers that joined us for this summer’s weekend cycling festival, RideLondon.

More than 15,000 riders took part in the inaugural cycling event that passed through Kingston town centre on Sunday 4 August.

A special thanks also goes to Hedley Featherstone for helping to recruit and support our volunteers.

As I’ve always worked with volunteers I’m keen to volunteer for other organisations and have been volunteering in the advice & information team at Age UK. I have also volunteered on helplines and befriending schemes and was very fortunate to be involved as a volunteer interviewer with the 2012 Olympic Games.

It was really inspiring to meet new volunteers every week for 12 months and then watch the extraordinary achievements of the 70,000 Games Makers as the Olympics unfolded.

Outside of work I like to spend time with family and friends and enjoy watching sports, going to the cinema and theatre and baking and eating chocolate cakes!

BOND workshop will focus on issues raised by schoolchildren BOND (Better Outcomes – New Delivery) has been working with Kingston since February to promote and increase the capacity of the voluntary sector to deliver services supporting emotional health and well-being of pupils in schools.

BOND is a national project working in London and a number of other regions.

Each borough is supported by its own bespoke programme manager to help explore further the themes discussed in previous workshops. Kingston is being supported by Dr Yvonne Anderson, a freelance consultant and partner in the BOND delivery team.

A further workshop for Kingston partners is planned for October 22nd, focussing on three issues, identified by Kingston schools following a survey on the mental health and emotional wellbeing of their children and young people:   

Anxiety Parenting and Anger problems

At the end of the session we will all:  Understand more about current provision and existing services  Be better informed about the interface between CAMHS, groups supporting the emotional wellbeing of children and young people and SPA (single point of access)  Agree where the gaps in services are and ways we can fill them  Have jointly created a tool to help us navigate services and make the best decisions for children and families  Have agreed mechanisms to improve information sharing and joint working between schools, voluntary and community organisations and Child and Adult Mental Health Service.

The workshop is open to local children and young people’s voluntary and community groups, schools, as well as professionals working in public health and social care.

GP’s need greater awareness of voluntary sector services GP’s and commissioners need greater clarity about what the voluntary sector can offer in the new health and social care commissioning environment, says a new report by the Third Sector Research Centre.

The voluntary sector also needs greater clarity about the opportunities available and how these will be funded and commissioned.

Commissioners should not expect voluntary organisations to provide free services.

The report suggests the need for intermediaries to broker effective relationships between these groups and that CCGs would be wise to invest in programmes to assist voluntary organisations with the transition into the new commissioning environment.

KVA is actively working with Kingston CCG

(KCCG) to expand communications between it and the voluntary and community sector.

Our Health Conference held in January provided an excellent opportunity for crosssector engagement. KVA represents voluntary and community organisations on a variety of KCCG joint planning boards.

We have also supported KCCG in achieving their equality and diversity objectives and continue to promote patient and public participation through our communications.

However we do believe, as identified in the report that further work can be done to raise the profile of the voluntary sector and look forward to any enhanced programme of work with KCCG to achieve this.

Working better together: Voluntary Sector Forum 2013 The Voluntary Sector Forum, ‘Working Better Together’ – VCS opportunities, roles and responsibilities’ held in July was a wellattended informative event, affording networking opportunities for delegates and lively workshop discussions on relevant voluntary sector issues.

75 delegates attended the Forum including representatives from 30 voluntary organisations, representing a diverse range of Kingston groups. A number of partners from RBK also participated in the event.

The agenda covered the ‘Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) Strategy’ and the ‘Voluntary Sector Compact for Kingston’.

‘Public Health in Kingston’ and the ‘Voluntary Sector Voice for Health and Wellbeing’. Although the Forum focussed on Health and Wellbeing the overall theme was on the voice of the voluntary sector in wider Kingston Strategic Partnerships.

Jill Darling, RBK Voluntary Sector Lead reported on how the Voluntary Sector Strategy has been developed by the Voluntary Sector Board along with a refreshed VCS Compact for Kingston.

Sandra O’Hagan, Associate Director of Public Health Kingston gave a detailed presentation updating the Forum on the newly configured Public Health in Kingston.

The KVA Joint Health and Social Care Managers, Maria Tunmer and Patricia Turner reviewed research findings and consultation responses from the 2012 KVA Involvement Review in Planning Health and

Social Care in Kingston, and fed back findings from the KVA Health Conference held in January this year.

Further to the presentations an interactive discussion workshop took place examining the VCS Strategic Partners roles and responsibilities and the potential mechanisms for further effective engagement.

Following the event KVA noted comments and in response aims to: 

Promote and support effective communications between the statutory and voluntary sectors



Produce a regular new e-bulletin focusing on Health and Wellbeing, giving opportunities for shared up-todate information between all partners.



Update the KVA directory of organisations with current data from our affiliates.



Engage the Voluntary Sector Board and Strategic Partners to establish a system of supported engagement and two-way channel information for smaller organisations.



Feedback concerns to the Kingston Strategic Partnership to engender meaningful and transparent relations.

Connecting with communities at the CRE Fun Day 2013 Guess the Weight of the PC was a popular fundraiser in September as Community Connected joined residents and community groups for the annual CRE Funday on the Cambridge Road Estate.

In addition to having some great chats with local people at this family fun-packed day, we also gained six refurbished PC registrations, seven people interested in IT training and two new volunteers!

“The CRE Funday 2013 was a great day with lots of interest in our Community Connected stand from residents on the estate” said Kate White, Superhighways Manager.

“It was also an opportunity to link in with other agencies and we’ll be following up potential joint working with KCIL, the Youth Service, Norbiton Children’s Centre amongst others”.

New violence and abuse helpline

Microsoft has made its online software available for charities. Office 365 gives users web-based versions of its software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and shared calendars. These free or very low cost products are offered through CTXchange.

Woman and Girls Network is a pan-London service offering free and confidential advice for woman and girls suffering domestic or sexual violence and abuse. Room for Work

Free Law Direct

Room for Work is a local registered charity offering a free employability course that fills the gap between Jobcentre Plus and expensive career coaching. The programme is open to all, but specialises in mature workers.

The free service is available to charities and voluntary groups who are unable to access legal aid. The advice is provided anonymously with no contact between the lawyer and the submitter. They aim to respond within 10 days of a request.
