Mix of rookies and returning members in new Kingston city council By Bill Hutchins Reporter

News – You could call it a fall housecleaning. Kingston voters swept a handful of councillors out of office in the Oct. 27 municipal election. The new council, when it first meets in early December, will look vastly different that the one that’s been in place for the past four years. Mayor-elect Bryan Paterson will oversee a council of seven new faces due to a combination of political defeats and retirements. Incumbents Sandy Berg and Jeff Scott failed to win re-election, while councillors Rick Downes and Dorothy Hector both lost their mayoralty bids. Their losses, coupled with the voluntary departures of Mayor Mark Gerretsen and councillors Brian Reitzel and Bill Glover, will ensure that, for the first time in recent memory, the majority of the next council will be comprised of rookies. cessfully campaigned for the NDP in two recent provincial elections before switching to municipal politics. “There’s been a lot of recognition at the door so obviously the work I’ve done previously has really paid off,” she said. Holland captured 54 per cent of the vote in the newly-created district, compared with 29 per cent for Tom Gingrich, 11 per cent for Kevin Holland and six per cent for Gordon Matthews. She will join other council newcomers like Peter Stroud, who earned 56 per cent of the vote in Sydenham district, nearly double the votes of second place finisher Adam Koven. “I’m relieved because it was a lot of hard work. We got started early knocking on doors back in June. We were listening to what people were saying, like being against the casino,” said Stroud of his victory.
