Contacting KCN
Update from CEO Diane White
Hello Everyone
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the latest KCN newsletter, I hope you find it useful and interesting, especially in these times with extra challenges brought on by the cost of living crisis. We were pleased to receive some additional funding from health colleagues (SW London Innovation Fund) which allowed us to offer more activities in warm spaces and partnered the council to support residents in the Guildhall warm hub.
Our collaboration with Kingston Hospital has also been strengthening as we work together to identify and offer support to carers. In the past few months, I have noticed a real and very welcome increase in the hospital’s recognition of carers and their respect and understanding of carers and their role. We all know that carers are the experts when it comes to the people they care for, this acknowledgement and support is refreshing and we are working hard to ensure it is sustained. Please do tell me of your experiences.
Best wishes, Diane
We are extremely delighted to have been re-awarded the Carer Support contract by Kingston Council, after a rigorous application process. We are looking forward to continuing close partnership work with them.
Thank you, All, most amazing carers and please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us, we are here to help.
Best wishes, Diane

Diane White - CEO
After 14 years, I have decided it is time to move on from KCN. It has been such a privilege and a pleasure to be part of this wonderful organisation and I have enjoyed every moment. Thank you so much to all of you, Very Special Carers, who have taught me so much and brought such joy, despite the many challenges you often face. I know I am leaving you in the very safe, dedicated hands of the incredible KCN team, who will continue to support you all and I look forward to seeing you again as I am sure I will return to volunteer!
Katie Glen - Adult Carers’ Support Worker
Hello everyone, my name is Katie and I joined the team at the end of October. I've been part of KCN for a few years, having volunteered for the Young Carers’ Project as a mentor and helped during holiday activities, so you may have seen me around. My current role focuses on helping with carers’ assessments and facilitating adult carers to take some time out from their caring roles. I have an adult son, have lived in Kingston for most of my life, and I am very excited to be part of a team supporting people within my local community.
Brendan Tarring - Funding Consultant
Hello everyone – I am really excited to be working with Kingston Carers’ Network to help raise money to support all of the really

important work taking place to support you in your caring role, whether you are young or a bit older - to live well and feel supported in everything you do. In the past I have worked to support people develop their careers, supported young people and adults into work, engaged with a wide variety of communities and interest groups to get a better deal. Working with carers is really exciting because together we are huge. Not many people realise that one in five adults in the Borough and across the country is an unpaid carer and I think that’s worth fundraising for.
Meera Winder - Outreach Worker
Hello! My name is Meera and I joined KCN in 2018 offering complementary therapies. Recently, I became an Outreach Worker for KCN as well as being part of the Wellbeing team. I am a scientist by trade but also offer a variety of complementary therapies, I enjoy the East-West traditional and modern medicine combination. I look forward to meeting and supporting the KCN team and carers in my new role.

Carers’ Assessments
With thanks to Carers First for the following article.
Thanks to the Care Act 2014, many carers in England are legally entitled to receive support from their local authority. The Act makes clear that supporting carers is just as important as supporting the people they care for. It recognises that being a carer for someone can affect your own life too, including your physical and mental health, your relationships with others, your ability to work and how much leisure time you are able to have.
All carers now have the right to receive a free carer’s assessment to evaluate what their needs are. They also have the right for any ‘eligible needs’ that are identified during this assessment to be met by support provided by the local authority.
Kingston Carers’ Network undertake Carers’ Assessments on behalf of the Council for carers aged 18 and over providing care and support to adults living in the borough. Parallel to this, the council continues to undertake combined (user and carer joint) assessments involving all carers. Parent carers and young carers can access an assessment via Achieving for Children.
The assessment is about you, not the person you care for. It is not about how much care you provide but about how being a carer impacts you. You will be asked questions about how your caring role affects you on a day to day basis and, how
Kingston Carers’ Network www.kingstoncarers.org.uk 6
well you are managing with being a carer, what your wider living situation is like and what goals you would like to achieve. We will discuss what support would be helpful for you so that you can manage better with your caring role.
As a result of a Carer’s Assessment, we can commission council services for you such as relief care hours or a flexible break payment.
If you think you might benefit from a Carer’s Assessment, you can request one.
If you are aged 18 and over providing care and support to adults living in the borough ,contact KCN on 020 3037 2757.
For user and carer joint assessments, contact RBK on 020 8547 5005.
For assessments for parent carers and young carers, contact Achieving for Children on 020 547 5008.

Alex: After injuring my knee on New Years Eve, I was a bit worried about my training but last week I completed the London Winter Run which is a 10km run on a cold February morning. So far I have raised 70% of my target and have received a lot of support from friends and family! I’m looking forward to the last stretch of the training and I'm very excited to run the run on the day! for more information

Message in a Bottle helps emergency services personnel to save valuable time in identifying an individual very quickly and knowing if they have any allergies or take special medication.
Paramedics, police, fire-fighters and social services support this Lions life-saving initiative and know to look in the fridge when they see the Message in a Bottle stickers, supplied. The initiative provides peace of mind that prompt and appropriate medical assistance can be provided, and next of kin/emergency contacts can be notified.
Carers Trust with NHS England is currently developing a method where GPs and emergency services would share contingency plans with carers’ permission and we will be bringing more information on this soon.
If you would like a “Message in a Bottle”, please contact Jo Maye on 020 3031 2757 or commsofficer@kingstoncarers.org.uk
Meet the Volunteer: Amar
Amar recently started volunteering with our Young Carers’ Project (YCP), supporting them in the office with regular admin tasks.
“What made you interested in applying to be a volunteer at Kingston Carers Network?
I had decided to do volunteering as I was interested in learning new skills and experiences. Having read about KCN I thought it would be a great place for me to gain experience. I also admire how the organisation has a positive impact on
13 020 3031 2757 Spring/Summer 2023
members of the community who are carers. I am aware of the importance of being a carer for someone because my grandmother was a carer for my grandfather. That’s why I like how KCN supports carers.
How long have you been volunteering at Kingston Carers Network?
I started volunteering in December 2022.
What is your volunteer role and what team do you support?
My role has been to put information from questionnaires onto Excel spreadsheets. The questionnaires were completed by young carers who took part in the YCP and it asked questions such as what they enjoyed about the YCP and how it has helped them in general.
What were your first impressions when you started volunteering for Kingston Carers Network?
When I started volunteering, I found the people at KCN to be very welcoming. Because of this I immediately felt comfortable and at home at the office.
What do you like about volunteering at Kingston Carers Network?
I like that it is a friendly environment, everyone there has been friendly. When you need help with something they are always willing to help, and I like how they are very approachable. Would you recommend volunteering at Kingston Carers Network to other people? If yes, why would you recommend this?
Kingston Carers’ Network www.kingstoncarers.org.uk 14
Yes, I would recommend volunteering because my time at KCN has given me the opportunity to try something new to me and because of that, it has been a very valuable experience. It also feels good knowing that I’m contributing something positive to the community.”
We are always happy to have former carers join our volunteer team. If you would like to find out more, please contact Aisha on volunteering@kingstoncarers.org.uk or 020 3031 2757.
News from the Young Carers’ Project
Update from Liz, YCP Team Leader
What a wonderful time we had over the Christmas holidays! We had a fantastic time ice skating in the run up to Christmas with 30 of our teenagers taking to the ice! It was so cold but it made the experience even more Christmassy!
We also took a group to watch our friend
Paul Vitty in a lovely Christmas production of Aladdin at the CornerHouse Theatre. Our younger carers enjoyed lots to eat and Santa even popped in to say hello. Paul Vitty has been working with us for a number of years running drama workshops and encouraging young carers to shine on stage.
Other highlights included a Ringos session on the slopes of Sandown in Esher, a go-karting experience at Gravity in
15 020 3031 2757 Spring/Summer 2023
Wandsworth, plus much more.
We’re delighted to be back in schools running breakfast and lunch clubs in Hollyfield, Tolworth Girls, Coombe Girls and TKA secondary schools.
If you think you may know someone who is a young carer, or you would like more information on the support available, please contact Liz on ycpteamleader@kingstoncarers.org.uk or 020 3031 2753.
News from the Mentoring Project
The Mentoring Project continues to go from strength to strength! In 2022, 31 young carers were matched with a mentor for one-to-one mentoring with a few of these matches now drawing to a close. It has been amazing to hear from our young carers about the positive impact of having a mentor, whether it be growing in confidence (through travel training with public transport, joining a new group or public speaking), learning new skills (bike riding, ice skating etc.), improving academically, enjoying new experiences outside of their comfort zones or working towards career goals.
Who are mentors? Our mentors are volunteers! Mentors are positive role models who spend one-to-one time supporting a young carer to achieve personal goals. They meet their young carer in a public space (outside the home environment) every two weeks for 6 to 12 months. Everyone on the programme has a budget of £40 per month to spend and together mentors and
Kingston Carers’ Network www.kingstoncarers.org.uk 16
young carers plan activities and have fun getting to know one another. We have a very dedicated team of mentors who are all incredible, going above and beyond for Kingston’s young carers.
Recently we hosted our first Young Carers’ Party Conference, ‘Inspiring Young Carers. ’This event was inspired by two volunteer mentors, Rich Webber and Heidi Johnson-Paul, who worked hard in not only coming up with the idea but by working closely with us to plan everything from start to finish including helping us secure sponsorship and funding. Read more below.
If you are interested in being a volunteer mentor, or would like to find out more, please email Jess, Mentor Coordinator, on mentoring@kingstoncarers.org.uk.
Inspiring Young Carers
‘Inspiring Young Carers’ –Young Carers’ Project’s first party conference
On Saturday 4th February Kingston Carers’ Network’s Young Carers’ Project (YCP) held its first conference dedicated to young carers. Over 200 young carers and professionals attended the event conceived by two volunteer mentors, Rich Webber and Heidi-Johnson Paul.
A young carer is a child or young person under the age of 18 who looks after or helps look after someone at home who has an illness, disability, or is affected by mental health illness or
17 020 3031 2757 Spring/Summer 2023
substance misuse. The support can be emotional, physical, or practical care.
The Safari Hotel at Chessington World of Adventures was a hub of excitement! As young people fluttered through the door, they were greeted with high-fives from the Gruffalo as well as petting animals including a goat, skunk, owl and even a panda. Young carers enjoyed entertainment including face painting, a balloonist, a sparkling gold photobooth, and great music from a DJ as well as a magician who floated a young carer on stage!
There was a fantastic performance from the Young Carers’ Project Dance Group and a moving rendition of the Bruno Mars song, “Count On Me” by the Young Carers’ Project Choir and it was wonderful to see how both groups have grown in confidence since their formation.
The conference welcomed MP Sir Ed Davey who shared his experiences of growing up as a young carer before announcing the winners of the YCP Creative Competition. The first prize was won by a five year old young carer with his emotive poem and illustration.
“My Daddy cannot see, so he can easily be stung by a bee. I like to help him do small things, Like stopping the bus and reading him the book Fing.
Kingston Carers’ Network www.kingstoncarers.org.uk 18
Even though being blind is not fair, It makes me happy to show him that I care.”
Young carers were given the opportunity to share their aspirations which were hung on fruit trees which will soon be planted in each of the four areas of the borough as a reminder of the importance of supporting young carers to enable them to grow and flourish.
A number of young carers were brave enough to take to the stage and share their stories of caring. It was incredible to hear how much the Young Carers’ Project has helped them to feel less isolated by offering a safe space for them to have fun with others who understand the responsibilities that come with being a young carer. 15-year-old A said, “After I moved to Kingston, I was granted the opportunity to join a youth group of people called ‘ young carers’, a term which I had never before heard in my life. This group would take part in fun activities ranging from bowling to go-karting and help young people facing a somewhat difficult time at home take their mind off their daily lives and do something they really deserved to do: relax, make friends and just enjoy the world. I’ve been part of the YCP for about five to six years at this point and have made several friends along the way with whom I relish spending time with. The activities I have been given the privilege of taking part in have not just helped me understand that there are several people out there who are just like me, but also has helped me experience things that will last with me forever.”
19 020 3031 2757 Spring/Summer 2023
Liz Grimwood, YCP Team Leader, explained the core work the project offers which includes regular drop-ins, breakfast clubs, holiday activities and outings to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation in young carers, a one-to-one mentoring programme which supports young carers in aiming high and reaching their potential as well as targeted support to improve self-esteem and resilience and ensure the most vulnerable young carers are fully supported.
Professionals were treated to a wealth of knowledge through the panel of guest speakers which included Carers Trust, the Head of Chessington School, and a representative from Kingston Carers’ Network’s Board of Trustees. The Mayor of Kingston also made an appearance to show his support.
The day ended with a hot buffet lunch, an interactive science performance from Gizmo’s Lab, volunteer awards, and the raffling of a framed picture signed by Tom Holland before everyone was given a goody bag and free entry into Chessington World of Adventures Zoo. We would like to thank all our sponsors for a truly magnificent day in celebrating the amazing young carers of Kingston. We couldn’t have done it without support from Chessington World of Adventures, The Brothers Trust, Kingston Council, Historic Royal Palace, Kingstonian Football Club, Ink Recruitment, Estate Agents Humphrey and Brand, KB Kares, Robert Holmes & Company, JP Dining, Greggs, Radio Jackie, and Co-op.

Counselling Service
KCN offers free one-to-one counselling which is provided by both fully BACP qualified counsellors, and trainee counsellors, who are independently supervised.
Counselling is sometimes called a 'talking therapy'. A counsellor aims to provide you with a safe, independent and confidential space in which you can talk about your concerns, feel listened to, respected, understood and not feel judged. People of all ages and walks of life seek counselling and find it can help them to cope or to deal with difficult emotions or situations. Carers may have particular concerns or difficulties associated with their caring role and our counselling team are skilled in working with carers to maintain their health and wellbeing while addressing these difficulties.
After the introduction of Covid restrictions, therapy sessions with our counsellors were been held via telephone or video calls (e.g. zoom). These will remain available for those who would prefer them, but we have reintroduced some “inperson” appointments.
The video call counselling list is much shorter than usual. We are also able to provide details of experienced BACP qualified counsellors offering low-cost counselling for carers.
For more information, please contact Helen on 020 3031 2757 or counselling@kingstoncarers.org.uk.

March of Time
Our weekly meetings
Bring so much joy
Shared histories together
For us to employ
So many years of knowing
So much language flowing
So many experiences
Make life glowing
Students, film, theatre, drama
Literature and language make life calmer
But, over the years, one doesn’t see

Walking Stick
Oh loathsome stick, beloved too, since I have taken up with the likes of you. Words nearly failed me, when it was suggested we form a partnership of two.
I felt our combined association would announce to the world I was past my best, worn out through and through. However I know I still have many healthy, slightly, painful years left in me yet.
So I've swallowed my pride and handed over part of my weight to you.
Together, we're out and about, we’ve increased my speed and most certainly improved my day. It is safer I feel, and do you know I don't think now, I could manage any other way.

Adult Carers’ Wellbeing
Welcome to our summer programme! We have lots of exciting trips planned, including picnics, walks, a river cruise and a cheese tasting tour! We will also be offering a new monthly wellbeing café, a friendly space for you to chat, enjoy a mindful activity, hot drink and cake.
I am so pleased to have Meera and Nicole on the wellbeing team. Nicole is providing administrative support and Meera will be attending lots of activities as the KCN rep during May – August. I will be less visible over the next few months, but know that I am still here and available if you need to talk or have any questions.
We are very grateful to the Carers Trust for their continued support, and I am delighted to announce that we’re offering a 2 night mid-week glamping retreat in Hampshire in June. The retreat is a chance to spend time in nature, focus on your own wellbeing and challenge yourself in a gentle and supportive environment. We will be sleeping in yurts, sharing communal meals and time around the campfire. The cost is £50 per person and we’ve space for up to 24 carers. See page 42 for more information.
If you are new to KCN please don’t be shy, we would love to meet you! Everyone is very welcoming, we all know how hard it is to attend on your own for the first time, particularly when you are juggling the demands of your caring role.
See you all soon! Layla (Wellbeing Co-ordinator)

If you are struggling with your health or wellbeing or are not yet sure what you want to do, please still complete the questionnaire as all responses are useful. You can complete the questionnaire online at www.kingstoncarers.org.uk/adultcarers/your-voice-matters. We are keen to also hear from carers who do not use a computer and are happy to post a questionnaire out to you. Please contact the office on 020 3031 2757 to request this.

Kingston Council would like to recognise Carers during Carers
Week and invite you to visit the Guildhall and meet our local MP, the Rt Hon Sir Edward Davey on Thursday 8th June from 1.00pm to 3.00pm. Contact Layla to book your space (see page 29).
Reading Retreat
The Reading Retreat is an exciting new reading project in which small groups meet weekly to discuss a piece of writing that is read aloud by the volunteer Reader Leader at the start of the session.
The reading may be an article, book extract, short story or poem. There is no reading to do beforehand, so you can just arrive at a session and join in the discussion or listen to others discussing, as you wish. Sessions are free and held weekly but you don't have to attend every week as each session is separate. Everyone is welcome to come along and give it a try!

Wellbeing Volunteer
We are delighted to welcome Nicole to the team as our Wellbeing Volunteer.
“Originally from Melbourne, Australia, I travelled to the UK in 1992. My plan was to go backpacking around Europe and stay for about 12 months but I met my now husband when I was temping in London, so here I am, 30 years later, with two lovely daughters and happily settled in Surbiton!
I have always worked in admin and marketing, most recently for 14 years at Kingston University. Since leaving there I volunteered with a Brighton-based charity that organise online activities and telephone befriending for older people, all over the UK, who are isolated at home. I also worked as a Digital Champion with Kingston Libraries providing digital support for local carers.
I am delighted to be volunteering with Kingston Carer's Network. I know some carers who have really benefitted from KCN's support and I think it's a brilliant charity. I will be helping Layla with the admin for adult wellbeing activitieshelping with registration lists and arrangements for lunches and outings. I met some of you at the Christmas party and I look forward to emailing, talking to and hopefully also meeting more of you soon.
I will be working in the office on Friday mornings and will be checking the activities@kingstoncarers.org.uk email so if you would like to get in touch, please do!

Carers Week 2023
Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don’t think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support. We believe that unpaid carers and the challenges of caring should be recognised in all areas of life, caring should be valued and respected by everyone in our society, and carers should have access to the information and support they need, where and when they need it.
