Welcome to FODAR 2025

Welcome to FODAR #11. When Grace Butland and I came up with the zany idea to start this festival in 2014, we never really imagined that it would go this far. And we didn’t imagine how much it would grow and how much both audiences and the Canadian dance community would love it.

FODAR is now nationally recognized and annually presents world premieres of dances that go on from here to tour extensively. Dancers from across the country send us their material each year in the hopes that we will present them. And everyone who gets presented wants to be invited back. Dance is mostly a big city game and the chance to spend a week in this magical town and dance in a perfect little theatre by the sea, is an increasingly rare treasure in our world.

2024 was the first year of our Creative Residency Program and it was awarded to Alyssa Martin and Toronto’s Rock Bottom Movement. Creative Residency gives the selected artist and their dancers two weeks in town to live and work towards the creation of a new work. And we are thrilled to announce that the dance Alyssa created and premiered here in 2024, Big Time Miss, just won 3 Dora Mavor Moore Awards in Toronto.

The 2025 residency was awarded to Crazy Smooth along with his collaborator, Saxon Fraser, and their Hip hop company, 10 Gates Dancing. Smooth, Saxon and their 5 dancers have been here for the past two weeks creating a new work, We Draw the Line, which will premiere as a work in progress on our Mainstage Program #1. The Creative Residency Program is made possible through a very generous annual donation from Joanne Weaver and Jim Mountain.

I wish to sincerely thank all the FODAR staff and volunteers, as well as our dedicated Board of Directors for making this improbable festival tick. Thanks to all of this year’s artists, our founding patrons, our current patrons, our government funders, and to King’s Theatre for helping to make both the mainstage and Market Dances shows possible.

And lastly – I want to thank the people of Annapolis Royal and the surrounding area for embracing and supporting us so strongly over the years. This is an amazing community and we are proud to be a part of it. Now – please sit back and enjoy the shows!

ALL STYLES DANCES BATTLE

JULY 16 | 7:00 PM

MARKET SQUARE, ANNAPOLIS ROYAL

About Street Dance Battles – A short primer

There are 2 main types of dance battles: ‘All-styles’ and ‘Single Style’

All-Styles refers to battles in which all street and urban dance styles such as breakdance, hip hop, waacking, popping, house dance and locking may be mixed. Single-Style focusses on just one style. The Annapolis Battle will be an ‘All-Styles’ Battle featuring 8 dancers.

The Battle will be set up as a 1 vs 1 elimination competition. Dancers will be expected to dance impromptu to any style and beat of music selected by the Battle DJ. The music genre changes for each dancer and can range from any genre of music such as rap, pop, break beats, funk, electronica, house music, etc. Each battle will consist of 2 dancers who will battle one another facing each other. All dancers in the preliminary battles will have two rounds of 45 seconds each to dance (1 ½ minutes in total). The 3 Judges will choose 1 winner from each battle to advance to the next round until the battle progresses to the final 1 vs 1 battle. In the final battle each dancer will have two rounds of 1 minute each to impress the judges. The dancers are judged on artistic creativity, musicality, and their ability to entertain the judges.

PROGRAM ONE

JULY 17 | 7:30 PM & JULY 19 | 2:00PM

KING’S THEATRE

Night Crawler (2025 - World Premiere)

Choreographer & Performer | Lydia Zimmer

Music | Amon Tobin

Lighting Design | AJ Morra

Night Crawler explores the eerie and disorienting phenomenon of double dreaming, also known as false awakening loops. In this surreal state, a person believes they have woken up, only to discover, sometimes repeatedly, that they are still dreaming. Drawing inspiration from films like Inception, this piece blurs the boundaries between consciousness and the subconscious, plunging the audience into a layered dreamscape where each awakening may be just another illusion.

CYMATIX (2024)

Choreographer & Performer | Caroline 'Lady C' Fraser

Music | Caroline 'Lady C' Fraser & Nate Smith

CYMATIX is a powerful exploration of the intersection between sound, movement, and emotion. Drawing from the concept of Cymatic Phenomena—the study of visible sound—this dance piece invites audiences into a world where sound is not just heard but seen, and movement is not just felt but interpreted as sonic texture. Through a seamless blend of Popping, Animation, and Waving, choreographer and performer Caroline ‘Lady C’ Fraser creates a deeply moving and immersive experience, intertwining recorded and live vocal performance to heighten the connection between body and sound. CYMATIX becomes more than just a performance—it's a visceral journey that embodies the tangible connection between music and the human experience. (15-minute intermission)

We Draw the Line (2025 - World Premiere)

Choreographers | B-boy Crazy Smooth & Saxon Fraser Performers | JK-47, Vibz, Palomecc, JC Fresh & Yofi Music | Shash’u

The creative curiosity being explored in this project is personal boundaries of all kinds – including, but not limited to, physical, emotional, and intellectual ones. Smooth and Saxon are working with a diverse group of five interpreters selected from within the street dance community. Through the creative process, Saxon and Smooth aim to expose and explore the interpreters’ personal boundaries and push them to expand or reimagine them in context of their individual styles and techniques to create a common but innovative movement language. Ultimately through this creative collaboration, Smooth and Saxon aspire to construct imagery of what holding healthy boundaries can look like.

KING’S THEATRE

Tether (2025)

Choreographer | Jera Wolfe

Choreographers | Marrin Jessome & Brayden Cairns

Performers | Marrin Jessome & Brayden Cairns

Music | Michel Legrand, Francois de Roubaix, Piero Umiliani, Saint Preux

Brayden and Marrin showcase a refreshing neutrality through partnering, creating complex movement and weight sharing regardless of gender. Jumelle(s) is titled to explore the pair, but also the individual, creating a captivating spectacle of wit and introspection - celebrating our differences and our similarities. Randy Glynn

Choreographer & Performer, ‘After Godot’ While I am the Artistic Director of FODAR it easy to forget that I was once, and occasionally still am, a dancer. I started my dance career by attending a class taught by Elizabeth Langley in Ottawa in January of 1975. I was 24 at the time and didn’t really know much about dance or what to expect. I had spent the previous five years leading a kind of ‘wild west’ sort of life in Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories and had a girlfriend who was once a dancer. Based on her stories, I gave dance a try. Let’s say I wasn’t a natural, but somehow, I got hooked. I went to Halifax to study music and English in the fall of 1975 and found a dance class to take with Pat Richards. Over my three years in Halifax, I switched my focus from English to Dance and, against a million odds, became a dancer. I helped start a company in 1977 in Halifax and that fall left to try to join the Danny Grossman Company in Toronto. Magically I ended up on stage with them in NYC that fall. And now, here I am at 73, dancing a bit and very thankful to still be having a truly delightful dance career.
