Athletics at King
King Athletics is known for its excellence. The title banners lining the walls of the upper school gym demonstrate its prowess. Our coaches are unrivaled in their experience, expertise, commitment, passion, and care, which allows them to support our athletes in every way as educators, leaders, mentors, motivators, and tacticians. Athletic Director
The Director of Athletics is the strategic and programmatic leader of King School’s 6-12 athletic department, responsible for advancing a values-based, student-centered athletics program aligned with the school’s mission and virtues. Serving as the public face of King Athletics, the Director reports directly to the Head of School and is a member of the senior leadership team. The Director of Athletics provides vision, leadership, and operational oversight while collaborating closely with senior administrators, faculty, coaches, students, families, and alumni to support participation, development, and competitive excellence. Cultivating positive relationships and connections with all stakeholders is of high importance for this position.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership and Strategy
• Lead all aspects of King’s athletic program and articulate the school’s athletic strategic vision
• Ensure alignment with school policies, cocurricular expectations, and mission
• Ensure that King is staying current with best practices by updating the divisional handbooks on an annual basis
• Chair the Athletic Advisory Council
• Prepare and present athletics updates to the Board of Trustees
• Work closely with the Lower School Head and Lower School Physical Education (PE) Coordinator to ensure vertical alignment of skills to prepare students for athletics in Grades 6-12
Coaching Leadership and Development
• Hire, supervise, evaluate, and support all head varsity coaches
• Design and implement a comprehensive coach mentoring program that promotes professional growth, leadership development, and alignment with the school’s mission and athletic philosophy
• Convene regular head coach meetings and annual all-staff meetings
Student-Athlete Experience and Well-Being
• Serve on the Upper School Student Services Team
• Support and counsel student-athletes throughout their athletic careers
• Serve as the primary liaison with the Dean of Students and Counseling Offices for athleticrelated social, emotional, and behavioral matters
• Partner with faculty advisors and parents to ensure student well-being
• Working with members of the athletic department, support the development of the leadership curriculum for captains
Admissions, College Counseling, and External Pathways
• Collaborate with Admissions and Head Coaches on student-athlete recruitment
• Partner with College Counseling to support students pursuing collegiate athletics
• Provide guidance and support families with identifying out-of-season camps and opportunities
Advancement, Marketing, and Alumni Engagement
• Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications team to support the King Athletics brand
• Support athletics-related fundraising in partnership with the Development Office
• Work closely with the Alumni Office to engage alumni/ae in athletics programs and initiatives
Financial, Operational, and Facilities Oversight
• Develop and oversee the athletic department budget in collaboration with the CFO
• Working closely with the Associate Athletic Director, oversee and approve ordering and management of uniforms and equipment
• Oversee and ensure the upkeep and effective use of athletic facilities
• Build robust auxiliary athletic programs, such as summer sports camps
• Continue to partner with outside athletic organizations that provide programming on our campus
Community Presence and Institutional Citizenship
• Oversee athletic assemblies, prize days, and major events
• Participate in afternoon, evening, and weekend supervision during athletic contests
• Support the broader mission and leadership of the school
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School
