THE SECOND WORLD WAR (YEAR 6

In Year 6, pupils learn about the Second World War, including how the war started and what life was like for men, women and children both during and after the war. This very effective chalk drawing by Flossy shows people inside an air raid shelter at night. Here is Poppy’s description of post-war Britain: After the war, many of the men didn’t return home, so a lot of the women had to keep working to support their families. The government needed builders and engineers to rebuild the destroyed homes. This created new jobs and lots of people moved to the UK. Every family was affected by the war. Unfortunately, a lot of people died which caused distress and mental health problems. The NHS provided mental health care and the government sent money and benefits to the families who had lost a lot.
