Here we are already halfway through the year, firstly my apologies to our members and their guests for any inconvenience that has been caused due to the extensive renovations that we have been undertaking around the Club, hopefully by the time you receive this copy of the Burst they should all be just about finished and you will see how good the Club looks and the improvements that have been undertaken have been very worthwhile.
The reception area is now a highlight of the Club entrance along with the revamped memorabilia cabinets and the new paved area around the Club memorial are a fitting tribute to all veterans past and present as part of the Club’s heritage as an RSL Club. The Sports lounge area has had a complete makeover with additional larger TV’s, two snooker tables will be situated back in the area and the snooker club will be recommencing their Friday night competition, if you are interested in joining the snooker club see club member Jeff Costa or reception.
ANZAC Day was a great success and with the fine weather, a larger than usual crowd attended, Club CEO Ian Todd, the Management Team and the staff did a terrific job the whole day which meant it went seamlessly, and everyone had an enjoyable day. The ladies of the Sub-Branch Auxiliary did a marvelous job by assisting serving the very welcome breakfast in the various areas of the Club, not forgetting the scouts and guides in the marquee, thanks ladies.
The Mother’s Day special breakfast, lunch and dinner offerings were once again extremely popular with many members and guests attending the breakfast, at both Fireside and Poloy, the Club will be having a similar promotion for Father’s Day in September, I would suggest you book early to ensure you get a table.
The July ham raffle and the very popular Christmas in July show are back, check this edition of the Burst or the Club’s website for full details of all the promotions that are happening at your Club.
It is with regret that I have to advise that Club Director Heather Shepherd has tendered her resignation from the Board due to health and personal reasons, Heather has been a Board Member for 14 years and the Clubs Sports Administrator for 6 years, Heather has made a tremendous contribution to the Board and the Club during this period and I would personally thank Heather for her service and wish her well for the future.
This will create a casual vacancy on the Board which we will be looking to fill, we will be asking for nominations, if you are interested in serving on the Board, if you are not sure what is involved see CEO Ian Todd, COO Debbie Harris or myself. Looking forward to seeing you at the Club sometime soon.
Alan R. Barnes OAM JP President“LIFE IS LIKE A BANK ACCOUNT. YOU ONLY GET BACK WHAT YOU PUT IN. EXPERIENCE IS THE INTEREST”
As we go to press the Club renovations are coming to a finish. This has been difficult renovation due to the many areas that had work undertaken and we apologise for any inconvenience caused during this period. The comments by all patrons have been great and we are sure you will all like the new refreshed look of your Club.
Once again ANZAC Day was a huge success with hundreds of members and patrons attending the march and service followed by a breakfast back in the Club. This is a significantly important day on our calendar and I sincerely thank all who attended.
The March, Service and Breakfast was followed by a full day of activities in the Club including our very popular Two Up event in the marquee.
My thanks to the Sub Branch and the Ladies of the Auxiliary for their organisation of the day and assistance in serving the breakfast. This combined with the tireless efforts of our staff ensured the day was a huge success.
In March the Club Annual General Meeting was held and I thank those members who attended. Our congratulations conveyed to Heather Shepherd who was bestowed Life Membership at the AGM for her contributions to the Club through her ongoing tenure as a Club Director over the past 14 years, a well-deserved recognition for her years of service.

The RSL&SCA vision is ‘To inspire and unite communities by recognising veterans’ service.’ For this reason, we have been supporting programs such as Homes for Heroes and Operation Care for years, and more recently the Veterans Benevolent Fund. In addition, programs such as Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge play a key role with clubs and youth. But this partnership speaks to the importance of commemoration and provides a unique opportunity for veteran and community engagement – and without Clubs like you it would not be possible.

Welcome to our midyear edition of the Burst, the weather for ANZAC Day was perfect and with it coinciding with the end of the school holidays meant that we had a tremendous crowd at the service comprising of current and ex-service men and women and their families along with many hundreds of local community families all commemorating this very special day at Kingsgrove RSL Club.
The Sutherland Shire Silver Band led the march and supported the service as did the cadets from the 233 St George Cadet Unit who made up the Catafalque Party and Guard. The 4th Kingsgrove Scout Group and the West Bexley Girl Guides were there in good numbers. The Reverend Kees Bootsma Minister at Beverly Hills Kingsgrove Anglican Church gave the ANZAC Day Address.
A special thanks to Club Director Michael Bougoukas and his son Ross who provided their vintage cars to transport those ex-service members who could not march. Thanks to Parade Marshall Phil Pollard and MC Peter Merlino both helped to make the march and service run smoothly.
Laying wreaths were Club Member Albert (Boss) Harihari on behalf of the New Zealand Ex-Service men and women. Councilor Liz Barlow on behalf of Bayside Council, A/Inspector Nick Glover for the St George Area Command, the Cadets, Scout and Guide Groups.
A special thanks to Leilani McIntosh who sang the New Zealand National Anthem in Māori and in English, she did a great job for some one so young in front of such a large audience.
The Kingsgrove RSL Auxiliary assisted as they always do in the smooth running of the morning by serving breakfast to all the attendees this year, as we did last year with a full breakfast being
provided to the Veterans, Cadets, Band, and their families and egg and bacon rolls were provided to all other attendees at the service, thank you Yvonne and all the ladies.
The Club CEO Ian Todd, COO Debbie Harris, the management team and our great staff did an amazing job organizing and managing the whole day, which saw a very large number of members and their guests enjoy this special day. The SubBranch appreciates the close cooperation between the two organizations.
The Sub-Branch along with members from Padstow and Campsie Sub-Branches visited Pre-Schools, Primary and High Schools and Nursing Homes in the Kingsgrove and Padstow areas to assist in their ANZAC Day Service, my thanks to all those who assisted.
Sunday 7th May was the date for our Battle of the Coral Sea Commemoration Service, unfortunately due to wet weather for the second year in a row we had to hold the service in the car park. The guest speaker was WOMT Ray Scarlett who provided a very interesting address on the battle that changed the course of the war in the Pacific. Despite the inclement weather we had a good roll up for the service and luncheon. Our next commemorative service is VP Day, Sunday 13th August commencing at 10.45 am.
KRSL Sub-Branch representatives have attended FSMDC meetings at Bankstown RSL and Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL and the next Sub-Branch meeting is 26th June, please come along and enjoy the comradery.

I’m pleased to say that the Friday night social night of darts is starting to attract more new members, good to see and for the more enthusiastic dart players there is a Wednesday night Club competition for anybody that would like to join.
The golf club has also been increasing their members, but unfortunately their playing numbers have been down for one reason or another, but we hope to see more players coming out for early morning “character building: sessions during the winter months.
Fishing.
Unfortunately, we still have no fishing club. We are seeking for people to put their hand to help kick start the fishing club and committee once again.
Finally, I would like to say that if there is anybody out there, that might have any ideas of sporting activities that we might be able to accommodate, please let me know.
MICHAEL BOUGOUKAS, SPORTS ADMINISTRATORWelcome to winter and hope you are all keeping well and warm. Our darts have been very interesting this year as we have had a few new members join our club. Nine members of the auxiliary attended the Anzac Service at the Kokoda Track. This function is so well organised and to see the senior veterans who attend is truly remarkable. I encourage Club members to attend this very special service.
The ladies supported the Anzac Day Service held here at the Club. They assisted with serving breakfast at four separate areas of the Club for all of those who attended. Busy, but enjoyable.
Ellen Glover, our welfare officer, has been in contact with our members who are not well and cannot attend our meetings, by providing cards, telephone calls and visits. We wish them a speedy recovery and thank Ellen for her kind support.

Our Easter delivery went well but we still had to leave the goodies at reception of each nursing home. We have had contact from a couple of nursing homes to say the Easter Eggs were a big hit with the residents.
As we go to print a nursing home has got in contact with us as they are having a teddy bears picnic. We are going to donate thirty teddies to their project and hope that they enjoy their picnic with the residents.
The ladies are still busy doing projects for the nursing homes for Christmas. We have around 400 presents to do so you can imagine how busy their hands are working. If you would like to join our community group you can leave your name and phone number at reception and we will get in contact with you. We meet
on a Monday morning once every two months to discuss what we are doing.
