King’s Ely Senior Sport Scholarship

The Scholarship Programme:

This programme is designed to support and nurture talented students who excel in sport. It is led by the Director of Sport and is assisted by all members of the Sports Department who share their own sporting expertise with students. This programme is developed for Scholars to broaden their understanding of sport, exercise and fitness whilst supporting and nurturing Scholars’ talents within their own specific sport. At its core will be a Strength and Conditioning Programme which will be personalised to the Scholar and will be created by our new Strength and Conditioning coach Michelle Bird. Students will attend weekly Strength and Conditioning sessions after school and will be able to work individually or collectively with her.

All Scholars will be designated a PE/Games member of staff as their mentor for the year. They will be assigned their mentor primarily on the basis of their primary sport focus and where this fits in their athletic development. Scholars will have bi-termly meetings with their mentor where they will discuss their main objectives for the term and a report will be sent home at the end of the term.

Students will also, throughout the year, be provided with a number of seminars, workshops, forums, external speakers and trips which they will be expected to attend. This element has been designed to aid and support their understanding and broaden their knowledge of sport from both a practical and academic viewpoint. These events will be delivered by highly experienced

professionals. Scholars will also be tested regularly using a number of fitness tests.

As outlined to all our Scholars there is an expectation for them to attend all workshops. They will attend a minimum of one Strength and Conditioning session a week to enhance their athletic development.

Expectations of Sport Scholars:

Sport Scholars are expected to make a significant commitment to sport at King’s Ely by:

• Demonstrating a wholehearted commitment to the King’s Ely Sports Programme and the scholarship programme provided to them.

• Supporting the sporting life of the school by helping to organise and run events of a sporting nature, as required by the Director of Sport.

• Making themselves available for selection for all sports at all levels. This includes prioritising sport at King’s Ely over other external sporting commitments (unless selected for the equivalent of regional level or above). All unavailability must be communicated well in advance.

• Committing to after school sporting activities and showing a willingness to help with younger years’ training.

• Participating in all house sports events throughout the year (unless injured and a note is provided).

• Being a role model for others by showing initiative and possessing strong personal qualities of leadership, fair play, organisation, communication and loyalty.

• Adopting the role of ambassador for the school and Sports Department by attending school events such as Open Days and visits to feeder primary schools.

• Demonstrating, at all times, a strong desire to succeed and work collaboratively with other team players and staff.

• Leading by example with certain aspects of training, such as warm up and cool down, or by demonstrating certain skills as required by the Sports Department and coaches.

• Fully utilising the Strength and Conditioning programme.

• Assisting with the development of sport at King’s Ely via pupil forums and sports councils.

Sport Scholarships are regularly reviewed and any failure to meet the criteria set may result in the withdrawal of the award.
