BECOMING A MONARCH ORIENTATION 2024

It is my privilege and pleasure as the president of King’s College to extend my best wishes and assurance of my prayers as you continue your path to Becoming a Monarch As you prepare to join our community, I imagine that you’re excited to begin this new adventure and to learn as much as you can to prepare for your arrival on campus in August.

Orientation will help you to navigate the many details that are essential to a successful beginning of your collegiate life. It’s part of the process of helping you to feel “at home” here at King’s.

As you work your way through this information guide, I trust that many of your questions about our orientation program will be answered, but nothing beats the experience of being here for Orientation and meeting new friends. I love the excitement and energy that marks the way that our faculty, staff, and student leaders work with incoming students at Orientation. I think that you will too!

At Summer Orientation, first-year domestic students will learn more about the great services and support that we will provide you as you begin your first semester. You will learn about adjusting to the academic rigor of college studies, the use of King’s technology, our Catholic and Holy Cross identity, residence and commuter life, safety, security, parking, and much more. And you will meet with an academic advisor to review your course schedule for the fall semester.

When all students join us for Fall Welcome in August, our Student Orientation team and Fall Welcome volunteers will welcome you with the warmth and hospitality that are hallmarks of our community and help you to feel at home with us. We will share with you our own journey of becoming a Monarch and help you get a jumpstart on yours.

As I begin my fourth year as president, it is hard to put into words how excited I am to welcome you to our campus. Among the many things that I love about King’s is that I know that I am not the only one who cannot wait to welcome you. I know that we want to help you discover or deepen your passions and interests. I know that we want to help you to excel in our academic and co-curricular programs. I know that we want you to find what we have found here: a community that nurtures, guides, and encourages each of us to become the best that we can be.

Enjoy the summer and come prepared for a great first year as a Monarch!

Peace,

BECOMING A MONARCH ORIENTATION

FIRST YEAR: SUMMER ORIENTATION SESSIONS

JUNE 24-28, 2024

TRANSFERS: ACADEMIC ADVISING SESSIONS

APRIL 15 – AUG 23, 2024

ALL NEW STUDENTS: FALL WELCOME

AUGUST 22-25, 2024

For Summer Orientation, Transfer Advising Sessions, and Fall Welcome, you will have specific tasks you need to complete before attending. You can find these checklists on the following pages. We are so excited to have you join the King’s family and become a Monarch!

Almost everything you need to finish prior to Summer Orientation and Fall Welcome can be completed in the portal using the login credentials provided in your welcome email. orientation.kings.edu

All first-year students (domestic only) will register for ONE single-day Summer Orientation session through the Orientation Portal.

At your Summer Orientation session, you’ll meet other first-year students, become familiar with King’s College technology, learn about expectations for college-level classwork, and meet one-on-one with an academic advisor to review your class schedule for the fall semester. Parents and other family members will have an opportunity to gain information from various campus resources, including financial aid, technology, and what their student can expect in terms of adjusting to the first year of college.

All transfer students (domestic only) will schedule an Advisement Session with the Transfer Advisor through the Orientation Portal. At your session, you will meet one-on-one with the transfer advisor to review your transfer credits and tentative class schedule. Transfer students can also use this day as an opportunity to schedule meetings with other offices, such as Financial Aid or Residence Life.

All new students (first-year, transfer and international) will attend the full weekend of Fall Welcome.

Our primary “Becoming a Monarch” program is so much more than an introduction; it is the beginning of a student’s life at King’s College. It is a time of celebration and connection. On the first day of Fall Welcome, Father Looney and various members of the faculty, staff, and student bodies, will gather the new members of King’s in an official welcome ceremony. Families are invited to participate in these important and celebratory moments. Over the course of the Fall Welcome program, you’ll meet with your first-year academic advisor, engage in your first service-learning experience through CitySERVE, and attend the first session of your Holy Cross Experience course. Along with this initial introduction to academic life, you’ll have the chance to enjoy cookouts and a variety of other social events where you can hang out with new friends.

COMMUTER CHECK-IN

Thursday, August 22, 2024

10:30 A.M. – 12:00 P.M.

Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center

Commuter students make up an important component of King’s, and the Office of Campus Activities and Commuter Life is proud to provide programs and resources that will make your journey enriching and informative. The office is located on the main level of the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center and works to make it easier for commuter students to ask questions, get connected to campus and community resources, and advocate on your behalf. In addition, Campus Activities and Commuter Life also provides programs and leadership opportunities specifically for commuter students. Our open-door policy invites you to use these services provided.

AT COMMUTER CHECK IN:

Pick up your packet, schedule and your student ID card along with your name tag for the Fall Welcome program. All students will participate in the required events August 22-25.

Rent a commuter locker to store your books and other belongings for the academic year. The cost of a rental is $5. Lockers are located on the lower level of the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center.

Stop by the Commuter Station, which offers water, coffee, tea, and soda as well as snacks.

Learn about Commuter Pit Stops, which take place each month in the Campus Activities Suite. A light lunch is provided along with a chance to catch up with fellow students and learn about events on campus. Dates will be posted for the monthly commuter pit stops.

Following commuter check-in, you and your family are invited to have lunch at one of two locations: King’s Court (Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center, 2FL) or outside in Regina Court.

We encourage commuters to invest their time and energy on campus; to become involved and engaged; to consider King’s a home away from home. If you have any questions, stop by Commuter Life in the Office of Campus Activities located on the first floor of the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center or call (570) 208-5900 x5550. Our office hours are MondayFriday, 8:30am - 4:30pm.

TRANSFER CHECK-IN

Friday, August 23, 2024

9:00am-10:45am

Campus Ministry Center

Transfer students are a vital part of the student body, and you bring a wealth of knowledge and information to the College community. We recognize that while you are new to King’s, you are not new to the college experience, so your Fall Welcome needs look a bit different than those of a more traditional first-year student. Transfer Students are welcome and encouraged to arrive on campus on Thursday, August 22, 2024, as part of Resident Move-In and Commuter CheckIn. If you are unable to do so, please join us for Transfer Check-In. You’ll pick up your packet and schedule, as well as your Fall Welcome schedule and King’s ID card. You will be able to engage with other new and transfer students, and become acclimated to the community prior to the first day of classes.

A NOTE TO FAMILIES

As we welcome your student into the King’s College family, we invite you to share the important milestones of Summer Orientation and Fall Welcome. Our Becoming a Monarch program is designed to prepare your student to meet the challenge of transitioning to college and to feel at home with us. It is designed to help you learn with them, to gain more information about the resources that King’s offers, and to learn more about the King’s College experience. Our experience tells us that parents and guardians value these moments. Preparing for and attending the Orientation and Fall Welcome programs brings home the truth that your student is setting out on a new stage in life’s journey.

Academic Advisement: Accompanying your student as they meet with their academic advisor helps you understand their course selections, opportunities, and challenges they might encounter in the classroom.

Resource Panel: Attending a panel featuring professional staff puts a face to those who serve at King’s and who will help your student along the way. The panel also provides a venue to voice questions or concerns.

Campus Tour: Touring our campus again or for the first time deepens your familiarity with us and deepens the bonds of community that marks our life here at King’s.

Checking In: Joining your student in the first hours of Fall Welcome is a special moment in the college experience. As your student moves into their residence hall or checks in as a commuter, you will be immersed in the excitement of this new beginning and the hospitality offered by our staff, faculty, and returning students.

President’s Welcome Ceremony: Attending is a great opportunity to listen to our president Father Thomas Looney and a distinguished member of the faculty address the entire Class of 2028 on the unique opportunities for growth in knowledge and wisdom that a King’s education provides.

Blessing: In a very moving moment as the President’s Welcome Ceremony draws to a close, parents and guardians rise, extend their hands in blessing, and pray together for the success of their students at King’s.

We imagine that as you prepare to send your student to King’s College, your deepest hopes and dreams accompany them. So, if you are able, please join us for these milestone moments of Summer Orientation and Fall Welcome.
