I allow my desire to not let people down get the better of me.

Generally, if someone asks me for help, I tend to process that by asking myself “Can I do it?”, but I don’t ask the other vital question, “SHOULD I do it?”. I think this is a weakness for a lot of people. Out of a genuine desire not to let people down, they end up with an incredible amount of clutter in their lives. Not wanting to let people down isn’t a bad thing in itself… it’s just that it’s foolish to let that set the agenda for your life; that’s what the Bible says: “An intelligent person aims at wise actions, but a fool starts off in many directions”. (Proverbs 17:24, GNB) If you let your desire to not let people down set the agenda for your time and energy, you’re going to find yourself starting off in many different directions, which leads to a stressed-out, over-busy, unfulfilling life. It’s foolish! Is this an issue for you?

I want to be well-thought-of I don’t want to be the one about whom people say, “Oh, don’t ask him – he always says no!”.

And I don’t think I’m alone in that. That is not necessarily a bad thing; it just gets bad when it begins to run our lives and dictate what we do and what decisions we make, and it begins to stop us from doing the right thing because it’ll lead us to not being well-thought-of.

These are three common issues that many leaders struggle with. Here are three steps forward that we can take: We need to say ‘yes’ to the reality of what drives us.

This is about acknowledging the truth; being honest about what our motivations are, not kidding ourselves anymore. Until we stop kidding ourselves and actually look the truth in the face, we’ll never move on. Are we telling ourselves that we have no choice in our job but to work ridiculously long hours, whereas the reality is that we just don’t want to let people down, or we want to be well thought of? Real change isn’t going to happen until we acknowledge that truth.

We need to say ‘yes’ to building rest into our lives.

The Bible tells us that: “It’s useless to rise early and go to bed late, and work your worried fingers to the bone. Don't you know he enjoys giving rest to those he loves?” (Psalm 127:2, MSG). We were looking at this in the last issue, but I include it again because we think that if we cut back on the rest time, that’s going to simplify life, because then we can get more done. However, that’s not how we’re built. The truth is, if we cut back on legitimate rest, our lives become MORE complicated, because we’re not operating in the mode we were created to operate in. God created me with the need for rest.

We need to say ‘yes’ to being willing to organise our lives around God’s purposes.

One of the major reasons why we have so much clutter in our lives is not that we are necessarily doing too much, but that we’re doing too much of the wrong things. We’ve said ‘yes’ to what we should have said ‘no’ to, and we’ve said ‘no’ to what we should have said ‘yes’ to. We clarify our lives when we say ‘yes’ to what the Lord wants us to do. How do we find that out? It starts with saying YES to the challenge to make time to spend with him; to be still and know that he is God. That’s the first purpose he has for our lives – that we spend regular time being still and focussing on him (Psalm 46:10, NIV). You’ll not find and live God’s purposes for your life until you are still enough to hear him. I know that to my cost. Learn to say ‘yes’ to the right things and you will keep your leadership calling on track!
