King Edward Sixth Trip to South Africa th th (13 – 28 August 2015) Cape Town/Goedgedacht Farm/Entabeni Game Reserve

Two week project Itinerary: • 3 nights in Cape town; sight seeing, cultural experience and free time • 7 nights at Goedgedacht; work on the farm, visiting POP centres, kindergarten and activities with the youth • 3 nights on safari; relaxing and reflection time

The history of the trip • This international trip has been running for 8 years • Set up during a rugby tour to SA in 2006 with the first trip in 2007 • Annie and Peter Templeton set up the trust in the early nineties • Original aim was to put into place support that was long lasting and sustainable to help the local people to help themselves.

• The Trust has grown enormously and now has international support from around the world.

Cape Town • Visit main sites and museums that provide a cultural and historical basis for the work on the farm.

• Weather variable – layers and waterproof jacket, especially for trip to Robben Island.

Heath Keyser, our Tour Guide/Organiser will meet us at the airport and take us to: Cape Peninsula Tour – Chapman’s Peak Drive Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and the Penguin colony at Boulders Beach.

Walk between Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope and up to the Light house above Cape Point

Saturday 15th August Catch MyCiti bus from hotel to Cape Town Station. Catch train from Cape Town to Glencairn where we hike up Elsies Peak to view False bay and Southern Right whales frolicking below. Lunch at Sea Fever (Heath’s house) overlooking Glencairn beach.

Sunday 16th August AM: Visit to District Six museum followed by Robben Island trip @ 11h00 or 13h00 Ferry (to be confirmed on arrival in Cape Town).

After Robben Island we will have the remainder of the afternoon at leisure in the V&A Waterfront.

PM: Dinner at Gold of Africa Restaurant with interactive drumming session.

Transfer time back to the hotel will be at the discretion of KES staff.

Monday 17th August • Transfer to Goedgedacht Farm

Work of the Trust • Pathway Out of Poverty ‘POP’ – where rural children come first • Parenting classes – ensure healthy mothers and healthy babies • Protect and nurture children – pre-school, after school and youth clubs • Bursary scheme to help high school pupils

Work of the Trust • Developing social skills through youth programme and sport • Health Education – HIV/AIDS • Community workers to visit farms with the aim of ensuring children are registered at birth

What will you be doing?

• Working on the farm; completing jobs, physical activity • After-school POP project • Youth club • Olive groves; seeing the large olive plantation, learning of its significance and helping to cultivate plants • Climate Change Path • Safe houses • Visiting the kindergarten

Youth in Construction • Have dinner each evening with around 30 local teenagers.

• Activities each evening, led by either KES students or Youth, some include controversial issues such as the Apartheid regime.

• Activities should include an important message (eg Olympics – team building), as well as being fun. Sports and music are both good ice breakers.

• There may be a one day trip out in Cape Town with the Youth at the end of the week.

Entabeni Game Reserve 24th – 27th August • Transfer from Goedgedacht Farm to CIA & your domestic flight to JNB Transfer time is + 1 ½ hrs • British Airways BA6410 Mon 24 Aug Cape Town Cape Town Intl 0940 Mon 24 Aug Johannesburg O.R. Tambo Intl Terminal B 1140 • On arrival at OR Tambo, JNB, you will be assisted to your coach for your transfer to Entabeni Game Reserve.

Transfer time is + 4hrs (OR Tambo to Entabeni GR)

Accommodation @ Entabeni Wildside Camp is on a full board basis to include 2 game drives and 3 meals per day.

Thursday 27th August • You will have the full morning at Entabeni Game Reserve – morning game drive, breakfast and time to pack before your departure.

Transfer back to OR Tambo airport, JNB for your international flight to London Heathrow.

What to bring?

• Passport • Clothes – warm layers are best as weather is unpredictable. No new or expensive items.

• Shorts- the weather may be slightly warmer on the game reserve • Thick gardening gloves appropriate for farm work • Underwear/night clothes • Wash Bag • Personal First Aid Kit • Sun cream • Towel (travel towels are lighter, more compact and dry quickly) • Warm hat and gloves/scarf • Rain Jacket – one that can be put into a rucksack • Cameras – do not leave them unattended • Alarm clock • Torch • Shoes – stout walking shoes and trainers • Swimming costume and towel • Pen and note book

First Aid Kit • Any personally prescribed medication from your GP (Please let Mrs Jones know if you are on any prescribed drugs) • A covering letter for the prescribed medication • Painkillers - Paracetamol/Ibuprofen • Antihistamines (tablets and creams for insect bites) • Lozenge/Throat sweets • Vaseline/lip salve • Re-hydration crystals - Dioralyte • Anti-Diarrhoea Capsules • Antiseptic wipes • Plasters/Dressings • Triangular Bandage • Safety Pins

Money • Cash machines are available in Malmesbury and Cape Town. However very little will be needed whilst on the project or the Game Reserve – maybe just the odd snack or drink other than tea or coffee. Money for 3 x lunches and 2 x dinners is required for Cape Town – a suggested amount is £100

Inoculations • Please ensure primary courses and boosters are up to date as recommended for life in Britain.

A successful trip Responsibilities: . You represent KES and your family and need to act responsibly.

(Alcohol/Smoking) You will be seen as role models for many of the Goedgedacht children and need to act accordingly.

. Whilst in SA you must be aware of your environment and take extra care of your possessions, especially in Cape Town. . Tell someone (teachers above all) if you are experiencing difficulties so that they may be sorted.

Expectations: • Language difficulties with some of the young children are to be expected.

Try to learn some Afrikaans before heading to the farm.

• Remember that you are there to help and support and so you need to be ready to try anything that you are offered at the farm.

• Please be flexible and make the most of this opportunity. Don’t hold back, push yourself and go outside of your comfort zone.

• This could be a life changing experience for you – enjoy it!
