King Edward VI School
May Bulletin 26 May, 2017
A
s I write, the weather remains changeable and our summer sports teams have had to dodge their fair share of showers although with considerable success against good competition. Internal examinations for the First and Second Years have finished and examinations for the Third and Fourth Years begin after half term. IGCSE/GCSE examinations are in full swing and A levels begin in earnest in June. Students are busy with revision, or should be! As all are now aware, the tragic death of Fifth Year student Ben Smith while on a run at home, has brought a sense of real sadness to the whole KES community. The members of the School have been wonderfully supportive of each other and I am really grateful to our pastoral staff and the care team for counselling distressed individuals. We are in discussion with Ben’s parents about hosting an evening memorial service at KES on 9 June to celebrate his life. More details will be published after the half term break. Please remind your sons and daughters that normal School regulations apply throughout the examination period, particularly those relating to summer uniform which is introduced for the whole School now that the weather has warmed up. As ever, we ask pupils to be careful with the sun and to take appropriate measures to protect themselves from sunburn. There is a great deal to be said for wearing a good hat! Work is proceeding well with the construction of the new Theatre and Sixth Form Concourse and we are on target for completion by the end of July. Our pupils have enjoyed the additional space provided by the refurbished art department and we should have access to the new atrium for the art exhibition in June. There is much to look forward to on our return with the science musical ‘Welcome to Gedanken’ to be performed in the Theatre Royal in Winchester, the Arts Festival, Sports Day, Endeavour, and the Swimming Gala. Most are subject, as ever, to the vagaries of the English summer weather.
