Financial Assistance for Parents and Bursaries
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR PARENTS
Bringing your daughter or son to King Edward’s School for their education is a decision which will benefit them hugely for the rest of their lives. However, it also represents a significant financial commitment on your part, which should not be underestimated. At King Edward’s School, we recognise this commitment and always aim to obtain the best possible value out of the fee income we receive in the provision of an excellent all-round education for our pupils. As a Charity, the School is non-profit-making, and all surpluses are therefore reinvested in the premises, facilities, resources and equipment needed to support that education in all its aspects. Since its establishment in 1552 the School has a long and proud tradition of providing education for able pupils from all backgrounds, and a main purpose of the Charity is to provide financial support for parents who are unable to afford the full fees towards the cost of a King Edward’s education through a programme of means-tested bursaries for entrants to the Senior School. Currently, around 120 pupils receive some kind of financial support.

BURSARIES
Year 7 Bursaries
Each year, the School awards Entrance Bursaries of amounts ranging between 10% and 100% of the annual fee, with any award assessed on the family’s individual financial circumstances and ability to pay. All pupils applying to join the School in Year 7 are eligible to apply. Once awarded, unless parental circumstances change, Entrance Bursaries can normally continue through the child’s time at the School up to and including Year 13, subject to an annual review. Bursaries may be varied up or down if parents’ financial circumstances alter. Please indicate under the Bursary section on the Registration Form that you wish to apply for a Bursary and return it to the Registrar by Monday 29 November 2021 at the very latest. A bursarial form will then be sent to you for completion. For King Edward’s Junior School pupils, please return the Registration Form by Friday 29 October 2021. A bursarial form will then be sent to you for completion.
Year 12 (Sixth Form) Bursaries As well as the existing Entrance Bursaries which can continue into the Sixth Form, further assistance is available for new entrants into the Sixth Form. These are also means-tested bursaries, and awards can range from 10%-100% of the annual fee and, as with the Entrance Bursaries, will generally increase proportionately in line with the following year’s fee increase. Whilst these bursaries are primarily aimed at external applicants from state schools, consideration will also be given in exceptional circumstances to applications from existing pupils not currently in receipt of an Entrance Bursary. In addition, there is a 100% Sixth Form bursary available for a pupil who has not previously attended an independent school and are especially talented in either Sport, Art, Drama or Music, as well as being strong in their chosen A Level subjects. To apply for a Sixth Form Bursary, please indicate under this section on the Registration Form that you wish to apply for a Bursary and return it to the Registrar by Friday 29 October 2021.

A bursarial form will then be sent to you for completion and this should be returned at least a week before the pupil attends for interview. Please note that the main interview date is Saturday 13 November 2021, and the majority of bursarial assistance will usually be awarded by early December 2021.
The Bursary Application Process A Bursary Application form with guidance notes can be obtained by ticking the appropriate box on the Registration Form in your pack; the forms are in line with the generally accepted principles of HMC Schools with regard to making meanstested awards. Additional copies are available on request from the Bursar’s Office, Stewart Building, King Edward’s School, North Road, Bath BA2 6HU, by telephone on 01225 464313 or by email to kesadmin@kesbath.com.
Applicants are particularly requested to note the Closing Date for Applications Late applications may be accepted in exceptional circumstances but are less likely to receive an award given the limited nature of the funds available. Please note that the process of awarding bursary assistance is confidential to both parties. Award Decisions
Bursary awards are made on the basis of an assessment of the family’s financial circumstances, including their savings, investments and realisable assets, as well as their income, major outgoings, the size of their family, any other persons dependent on them and other similar factors. All assessments and awards are determined jointly by the Headmaster and Bursar, and decisions are communicated either prior to, or at the same time as, the offer of a place at the School. In the event of places/offers not being accepted, the Bursary applications can be revisited to use the full budget and/or be used for late applicants. Parents who later run into financial difficulties may appeal to the Headmaster or Bursar during their child’s school career for assistance from the School Bursary Fund, although this support is likely to be limited.
Sibling Discount We do not offer automatic sibling discounts, but we do take into account any siblings at the School whenever we receive applications for financial assistance through the bursary award process. Our policy is to keep the School fees as affordable as possible whilst providing a high-quality education, and to direct our limited bursarial resources to situations of most need.
