My name is Aine Crilly, I established The HR Elephant in 2017 when I identified a gap in the market to support businesses operating in the two jurisdictions on the island of Ireland. It can be difficult, especially for small businesses, who do not have an in-house HR resource to keep up with the legislation and the expectations in relation to people management in an ever-changing society.

I am delighted now to have a full team around me who we call our ‘herd’, ready to work with you and your business to help and guide you and your people to get the most out of each other.

HR (Human Resources) is evolving as a practice, never more so than in 2020. The remit has become so wide encompassing everything from employee contracts and Covid recovery through to social awareness and diversity and inclusion.

We pride ourselves on being forward thinking, client facing people management specialists. Here we give you a snapshot of what we can do but if you have an issue which has not been covered in the pack, please do contact us. We are very sure we will be able to help.

The HR Elephant was established in Newry, Northern Ireland in 2017. Aine Crilly had a varied career in HR, legal, policy and recruitment and completed a Masters in HR prior to setting up the business. Aine had two very young babies at the time and starting with referrals from family and friends, The HR Elephant was born.

Having identified a gap in the market to support businesses on both sides of the border Aine started off with that specialism. As the team has grown we have expanded our remit and we now have three strands to The HR Elephant .

Working with Businesses who employ people in NI or UK only; Republic of Ireland only or our original brief of supporting businesses with people employed in both jurisdictions.

Our Vision To be the leading cross border HR consultancy on the island of Ireland; with a team of people focussed specialists who can deliver quality HR support in both jurisdictions.

These are called our ‘Three E’s’ and they are central to everything we do. In our section on HR Consultancy on page 6 we will talk more about what this means.

Our herd want to break down the jargon and really make HR about effective people management, adding value to your business and creating a culture where people feel supported, listened to and appreciated.

Our Value We believe it is very important for a business to have values. This is a collective set of behaviours that everyone in the company signs up to. It helps to define who the business is and what it stands for as well as helping team members to understand what behaviours are expected of them.

We are proud to have our own set of values in The HR Elephant and we can also help you if you want to set and define yours.

PRINCIPLED: Principles start at the Head of our Herd We walk our talk with the moral code of the head of our herd running right through our organisation into yours. We are curious and we will question but we will not take risks. Our reputation is built on protecting and respecting yours.

PROTECTIVE: We adapt a herd mentality to Protect our clients Elephants are known to build strong protective bonds within their herd. We will protect your reputation like it was our own. We will work with you to protect your business from exposure to HR risks and we will work with you to protect and support your people through using our Three Es.

So, what do we do?

We work with Public, Private and Third Sector organisations and businesses- both north and south of the border on the island of Ireland. We can support businesses who work in just one jurisdiction or the other and we specialise in supporting businesses who work across both. With the added complexity of crisis managing Covid and Brexit, we are finding more and more businesses needing support with their cross-border people management.

We work on either a retainer or a project basis. You will see from our packages on pages 13-15 what we offer our retainer clients. We seek to become an extension of our retainer clients’ teams, often spending time on site with them or having a company email address as if we were a direct employee.

We know that busy business owners and in house HR teams don’t often have time to review the detail of legislation, to keep up to date with relevant updates or to put in place the policies and procedures needed to run an effective organisation. We can do all that for you or with you. We pride ourselves in delivering a new style of HR. We don’t talk jargon, we spell out the acronyms – yes even HR (Human Resources) and we don’t pretend we know the answers to every question. Sometime our best work is when we say ‘I don’t know but I will find out for you’. You can trust us that we will do the research and find the right answer.

What does this actually mean?

EMBRACE: Human Resources is such a wide remit that it is impossible to be an expert in every facet of it- from employment law and interpreting the jargon, to mental health, employee engagement, CSR and everything in between. We embrace our clients and wrap them in confidence that we can find the answers to their people queries; we can support them through change; and we can help bring out the best in their herd.

EDUCATE: We educate owners/managers/supervisors/ team leaders on how to manage their people both individually and collectively. We support with ensuring compliance, delivering best practice in workflows, providing training and tracking performance management. We also work with HR professionals inhouse to advise and support on more complex elements of HR including redundancy, termination, cultural issues and can support with day to day operations or recruitment at particularly busy times.

ENABLE Whether you have a small, compact team or you are managing a growing business we will enable you to manage your people to the highest professional standards. We can be front facing as a visible extension of your senior team on a retained basis or working behind the scenes to enable you to deliver the best for your herd on specific projects.

Recruitment & Selection If you employ any people in your business, you will need to do some level of HR management.

Many small businesses require support because they do not have time to deal with HR matters.

Contracts of Employment & Employee Handbooks We identify your problem and we help deliver solutions.

We can assist you with anything relative to people in your organisation through from recruitment and selection to employment law issues, culture, and values through to succession planning for family businesses.

We can tailor employee contracts for you based on current legislation and we can work with your team to draft and present employee or workplace handbooks which can form the backbone of an effective workplace people management strategy.

We, at The HR Elephant are big advocates of Employee Handbooks. They aren’t a necessity, but we would certainly advise growing companies to consider having one.

This is an opportunity to layout in plain language the HR policies and procedures in and organisation. This sometime forces a management team to think about how they would deal with certain issues if they arise.

EDUCATE Learning & Development – Workplace Training Are you responsible for training in your organisation?

Do you provide training and career improvement opportunities to your team? Have you ever thought about your own HR training needs?

There are many studies and organisations which promote the importance of training in an organisation with any number of reasons why it is important.

Some of the most important for The HR Elephant include- compliance. For example, it is important for HR professionals and those with that responsibility in the workplace to know the fundamentals of Employment Law; it is important to be able to talk knowledgeably and professionally to employees about for example statutory maternity, paternity, harassment in the workplace, stress, grievances.

WE PRIDE OURSELVES IN DELIVERING A NEW STYLE OF HR

Well trained HR professionals who know how to deal with mental health concerns, conflict resolution, diversity, managing performance, leadership and mentoring are likely to be more efficient and productive.

We work with businesses large and small to identify their training needs for their people with responsibility for looking after the rest of the team. We can also come in and directly train employees in issues ranging from mental health, flexible working, diversity, and inclusion.

We offer one to one, workplace or group mentoring on a range of topics which can be identified through a Training Needs Analysis scoping exercise with the business.

Enable We want to enable our clients to help themselves. Some of our clients only need our support for a particular project, mentoring or training. We can provide all these services as a one-off fixed project cost- hourly, half day, full day or longer.

‘Your HERD’- Conflict Management Clinic Do you need help with managing individuals or groups within your team? When faced with conflict management a lot of businesses do not know what to do and they may do something which can make the situation even worse.

Our ‘Your HERD’ clinic can help you to address these issues early, if possible and to resolve them. We can take you through step by step how to manage issues in your team or manage them for you.

Most importantly we also can guide your through the legislation in relation to conflict in the workplace to make sure that there is no further redress when you have resolved the issue.

‘Get HERD’ Career Clinic and Diversity Clinic Do you need help with your CV, Cover letter, application form or for the dreaded interview stage?

Our Herd can help you be ‘herd’ and help you stand out from the pack. Our career clinic offers a range of options for school leavers right through to C-suite level executives. Our aim is to coach you through presenting the very best version of yourself on paper and in person.

Unfortunately for many in demand jobs now recruiters use scanner tools, you need to hit the right buzzwords for your CV to be even read by a real person. Our herd includes former recruitment consultants, interview panellists and hiring professionals. We know what companies are looking forward and we know how to help you to present yourself.

Our ‘Get Herd’ Career Clinic provides a range of options from online group learning sessions to one to one mentoring. We provide professional writing services and coaching that has helped our clients to secure interviews and ultimately new employment.

The Three E’s - Embrace This is our premium, full-service package. Here we will do a complete business analysis with you to identify your people management needs. We operate as an extension of your senior management, often with a company email address, providing direct HR support to your people and to your senior team. This service has all the benefits of an in-house HR facility with the cost effectiveness of not having to employ someone full time.

This service is offered for clients 20+ hours per month.
