hane saw huge celebrations on the eve of Dahi Handi festival as various mandals from all over Mumbai had arrived in Thane to form the human pyramids, by participating in the various famous Dahi Handis like Jitendra Ahwad (NCP)'s Sangharsh, Pratap Sarnaik (Shiv Sena)'s Sanskruti and Ravindra Phatak (Shiv Sena)'s Sankalpa. Hence, big police force was deployed in the city for security. The human pyramids of nine tiers was seen at the Sangharsh and Sankalpa event which was formed by Jai Jawan Mitra Mandal, Tad-

wadi. None of the organisers of big Dahi Handis followed the rule of 65 decibels and the 20 feet height for the dahi handis. Bal govindas were also seen in the pyramids. Rupali Yerumb, from a female Govinda group said, "We have come from Jogeshwari and we are representing the Shivtekdi Govinda Pathak. We are around 60 females including a 9-year-old girl who climbs the last tier for 'salami' (salute). We have being coming every year to Thane and its our 8th year of participation”. When quizzed about the high court's rule regarding the age and the decibels, Ravindra Phatak, organiser of

Sankalpa said, "It's all politics and I see the dahi handi as a sport, which should not include age restrictions and should be supported by all." Kalwa's civil hospital had made prior preparation including doctors, medicines, ambulance, and beds. "Twenty beds were kept ready – 10 in casualty ward and 10 in trauma ward – with the team of doctors including orthopaedic surgeons, specially for the injured Govindas. As far as the injuries of brain and spinal cord are concerned, the Kalwa hospital is not equipped to treat such injuries. Hence such Continued on pg 2 «

At Nair Hospital, eleven govindas with minor injuries like swelling in knee joints and cuts and bruises were treated on an OPD basis, informed an assistant medical officer there. Three govindas were at GT Hospital, four at St George and one at JJ Hospital. So, if one goes by the number of injuries, which, according to doctors has, fallen drastically, Mumbaikars seemed to have celebrated dahi handi more safely this year. “We better wait till 11 pm because it is around that time the celebrations stop. We keep getting cases till twelve. But yes, compared to last year, the situation has definitely improved. It might be because people have become more careful and also some protective gears were used. Minor injuries will always be there, but let us hope that we don't get any serious spine injury or cases of quadraplegia,” said Dr Supe. Dr Parker said, “Though we can't comment on the numbers right now as we keep getting cases till 12

at midnight, the nature of injuries, as of now, is not as grave as it was last year. The injuries can be managed with conservative treatment. At this point in time, we have not got any case where the injuries were grave or life threatening. And this is probably because the govindas ave been more cautious and careful this year. Also, at some dahi handis, I saw some people standing around the pyramid and catching people when they fall. They were supporting the pyramid.” shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

DIARY

03 Sushil Kadam | ADC

SIGN OF TIMES TO COME: For the first time, we have a picture that helps us reflect on how we are moving ahead in our civilisation even as we cling to traditions. This human pyramid seemed to tower high enough to reach the monorail. As one of our colleagues quipped, maybe that will be the way some would prefer to enter that train. ADC’s ace lensman Sushil Kadam managed to get it right, perspective and all.

Minimal bruising and grief?

Three deaths and some crippling injuries during earlier practice sessions is what it took to make this year's dahi handi a relatively safe one. In order to protect life and limb of children and grown-ups, the Supreme Court had come out with a ruling on the minimum age of 18 years for participants and for handis no to be tied above a height of 20 feet. However, some members of political parties were ready to defy the laws of the land to put themselves and their children in harm's way under a mistaken notion of the need to uphold religious beliefs. Not to be outdone by those using dahi handi for pre-election propaganda, the state government got ready to throw caution to the winds in the hope of garnering some votes in the forthcoming assembly elections. It said it would appeal against the SC's very sane ruling. We therefore have only the citizens of Mumbai to thank for finally exercising caution during yesterday's celebrations.

Still, one dead and 209 injured is a tally we need to reduce to nil.

Sadly, eve-teasing and balloon throwing persist

There is however urgent need on the part of organisers and political leaders to curtail misbehaviour like catcalling and eve-teasing by revellers and balloon throwing by miscreants. Our reporter came in nursing a hurt wrist after she got hit by a water-balloon in Parel. The cops manning a beat-chowkie in the area expressed a certain degree of helplessness, but asked her to register a complaint. A female constable confided that she too was once a victim when she was not in her uniform. Our netas should take note.

Maria must mind his men

It is about time he did. We had great hopes as citizens that he would resurrect much of the faith that had been lost during the earlier CP’s tenure.

victim on his head with a metal object rendering him unconscious. The senior inspector of the Nagpada police station has reportedly filed an FIR invoking sections of molestation and assault. We hope the case is not watered down. This is where, as commissioner, Rakesh Maria must step in and stem the rot.

Only fake cops a problem?

More on, actually against, the lawmen. Heard this in the train from harried commuters who can sometimes make the best of a bad situation by getting a few laughs out of it. Scanning a newspaper, a passenger grumbled aloud about people, particularly women, being conned into parting with valuables by persons masquerading as cops either in plainclothes or wearing fake uniforms. Another passenger looked at him very coolly, and then boomed, 'Such fake guys are only a handful. The real culprits are real policemen in real uniforms and 7,280 cases have been registered against them in the state in 2013!' Even as that got the attention of most of us, a burly cop with a potbelly sauntered into the compartment. For some time, all eyes just were just transfixed on his girth. The first passenger then said, almost inaudibly, 'No comment.'

Wrong affidavits! After child labourers were rescued from a fishery firm’s claws, parents of 25 Assamese children have come to claim them; some children have affidavits which an NGO says are false By Santia Dudi

O

ne more instance of carelessness and flaw in the system has come to light in the case of the children rescued from Taloja's fishing company. On July 11, 2014 ninety seven minor slave labourers were rescued from the Meenakshi Fishing Company also known as Ulka Sea Food. The minors were not allowed to go out of the company, also they were not getting their salaries. After the raid the children are staying at Children's Care Centre in Dongri. ADC has earlier reported about the raid conducted at the company, alleged condition of the Children's Care Centre, children who were not working were sent for medical examination and made to stay at the care centre for more than 20 days and 22 Orissa kids remain unclaimed. This time almost after a month of the raid, parents of 25 minor girls from Assam have turned up to claim their kids, They carry an affidavit with them claiming that they were not working at the company but were coincidentally present at the spot. Apparently the information provided in the affidavit is wrong as claimed by the NGO, Indian Rescue Mission (IMR) representative Hazel Lobo who was present at the spot during the raid. The date of the raid mentioned in the affidavit is July 18, whereas according to Hazel, the raid was conducted on July 11 at around 6 in the evening. She told ADC, “All of a sudden parents of 25 Assam kids have turned up. The parents claim that they are local residents. If they are living at Taloja (Panvel) why did it take more than a month to come and meet their kids?” Hazel provided the details of the affidavit to the ADC along with the photocopy of the same. She further added, “The information provided in the affidavit is wrong. The most basic information like the date and the time of the raid is incorrect. How can such a crucial and responsible document be prepared with such carelessness? We as an NGO have all the reasons to doubt the integrity of the parents. Suddenly after a month 25 parents who claim to be local residents have come and are demanding the children, this is quite hard to digest.” The parents however claim that they don't have any documents to prove their relationship with the children.

Police make third arrest “Gavande has past criminal records of robbery and theft registered in the Shahu Nagar police station and Dharavi,” said Rajendra Kane, police inspector at Bandra police station. “They were produced in the court on Monday and remanded to police custody till August 20,” Kane added. According to the police, the incident took place on Sunday, early in the morning, when the couple was returning home after a get-together in Bandra (W). They were travelling on a motorbike

when they halted near Bandra railway station to get themselves a smoke. “The accused were roaming there when they approached the couple and inquired about what they were searching for. The couple told them that they wanted cigarettes but none of the shops were open,” said Kane. “The trio then told the couple that they could help and took them to an isolated place near the slaughter house compound in Shastri Nagar area, in Bandra (W),”

added Kane. “The accused took the couple behind a tempo and assaulted the man, threatened him with dire consequences. They also threatened the woman not to raise an alarm. One of the suspects misbehaved with the girl and touched her inappropriately,” said another officer. “The accused then robbed the couple of their two mobiles phones worth Rs 33,000 and also Rs 500 in cash. They allegedly threatened to kill the couple if they didn't comply,” said Kane.

Cops bust prostitution racket in Mira Road By Suresh Golani

T

he Anti Human Trafficking Wing (AHTW) of the Thane (rural) police led by Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Gavas busted a prostitution racket that was operating from two notorious lodges located on the Mumbai-Ahemdabad National Highway in Kashimira. While two waiters who doubled up as pimps have been arrested, nine girls including three minors were rescued by the police team. Following specific information about prostitution activities being operated from bar-cum-lodges on the highway, a police team under the instructions of Thane (rural) SP Rajesh Pradhan sent decoy customers to two lodges R K Premier and Sapna Lodging.

After confirming the authenticity of the tip-off, a police team led by API Gavas swopped down on the lodges and rescued nine girls including three minors. “Two waiters identified as Vinay Muni Modi (28) and Ashok Narayan Gupta (41) were caught red-handed while striking a deal with our decoy. Both working as waiters apparently doubled up as pimps,” confirmed Gavas. A case under the relevant sections of the stringent Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA), 1956, has been registered against the duo who have been remanded to custody. The rescued girls have been sent to a rehabilitation centre. The case has been handed over to the Kashimira police station for further investigations.

Man commits suicide, alleged false arrest By Tariq Khan

A

23-year-old man committed suicide at Kurla railway station, three day after he was arrested in a cheating case by the Vashi police on August 5. A suicide note addressed to his mother was found in Parvez Shaikh’s pocket, in which he wrote that he was being framed in the case for which he was arrested. He wrote in the note that he did not cheat anyone, but only helped them, and blamed one 'Sandeep' for making away with the money given to them. He also blamed the investigating officer at the Vashi police station, Assistant Police Inspector

More for an unfair investigation and said that the complainant staged a conspiracy against him. Shaikh, who was arrested by the Vashi police for cheating a student to the tune of Rs 2.30 lakh after promising him admission in an engineering college, committed suicide on August 8 at around 8.50 pm on platform 8 of the Kurla railway station. Shaikh’s mother said that her son was helping their neighbour secure admission in an engineering college. “My son was arrested whereas Sandeep went scotfree. He was depressed since then and told us that he would commit suicide. On July 7, just a day before he

committed suicide we spoke to him on the issue and told him to start a new life, but he didn’t listen to us,” said Karimunissa. The police ruled out any foul play. According to the complaint filed with the Vashi police, Shaikh told the father of the complainant, Aijaz Ansari, that he would get his son admitted in Bhartiya Vidyapith, Kharghar. “Shaikh told them that Sandeep is a professor at the Kharghar college and also taught him when he was doing his engineering. Aijaz was assured of a seat in the college and the duo took the money in two installments, first on June 30 and the rest on July 7, at Inorbit Mall,

Vashi. They said that the admission will be done within two days, but later kept delaying. The complainant went to the Kharghar College and inquired if Sandeep is a professor at the college, but there is no one named Sandeep there. When they came to know that Shaikh was planning to go to Dubai, they approached the Vashi police on August 3 and filed a case of cheating,” said an official from Vashi police station. Sandeep, who was absconding, but was tracked down on August 8, the same day of the suicide. Senior Inspector Laxman Mane from the Vashi police station and API Ramesh More remained unavailable for comment.

n a bid to carry forward the legacy of the Other Backward Class (OBC) leader, late Gopinath Munde, state Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) president Devendra Fadnavis yesterday announced a 14day two-phased 'Punha Sangharsh Yatra' by Munde's daughter, Pankaja MundePalwe. The tour will begin from August 27. Speaking to newspersons at the Mumbai BJP office, Dadar, Fadnavis said that the aim of the rally was to thank people for their continued trust in late Munde's leadership and urge them to fulfill his unfinished dream of bringing the BJP-Shiv Senaled Mahayuti alliance back into power. During the rally, the party will highlight the bad governance and corruption of the ruling Congress-NCP led Democratic Front government in the last 15 years and the promise of good gover-

nance by the Mahayuti. Later Fadnavis did allude to the fact that in the Assembly elections, the party will contest a significant number of seats in Latur and Beed districts, the stronghold of Munde family. Pankaja Munde-Palwe, herself a party MLA, plans to recreate the magic of her late father's similar Sangharsh Yatra that he had undertaken prior to 1995 Assembly elec-

tions that catapulted the then Sena-BJP alliance to power in the state. Speaking to newspersons later, Pankaja referred to the continued mass expression of support to her in recent days and admitted that the party was late in reaching out to Munde supporters that cost the party dearly in the recent legislative council election to Aurangabad division Graduates constituency. On the issue of

Congress none the wiser By A Special Correspondent

ven after the major blow in the Lok Sabha elections, the state Congress leaders are in no mood to learn a lesson from that defeat. On the one hand, the party is struggling to finalise the seat-sharing formula with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and on the other, the collective leadership formula in the state has hit badly. Senior party leader Narayan Rane, the new campaign committee chief, stayed away from the first meeting of the poll panel on

Sunday which screened candidates for the Assembly elections barely two months away. Rane's absenteeism has raised the question of whether the new idea of a collective leadership will work, given that most of these leaders don’t even see eye to eye. The Congress high command has made a full-fledged attempt to fit its dissenting senior leaders into five new panels set up for the Herculean task of retaining the power in the state. These panels are headed by the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and three former Chief Minis-

ters — Sushilkumar Shinde, Ashok Chavan and Narayan Rane — and state Congress president Manikrao Thakre. A day before Rane bunked the meeting, his eldest son and former MP Nilesh Rane, ignoring party protocol, announced that he would contest as an Independent from Guhagar constituency in Ratnagiri, currently held by the Congress ally, the NCP. The statement comes just as the NCP chief, Sharad Pawar, indicated that his party was willing to compromise on the seat-sharing. This has created a misunderstanding with the

ombay Natural History Society (BNHS) hosted a book reading event of 'Scent Of A Game' written by Raghav Chandra, Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser (various departments), Government of India, on Thursday. The event was attended by Bittu Sahgal, Editor of Sanctuary Magazine and Divyesh Parekh, Central Marketing Manager of BNHS. The event began with an open discussion of wildlife conservation and the hurdles in it such as poaching, trophy hunting, hunting during British Era, Van Ingen, Edward Gerrards and the wildlife mafia. After that Raghav Chandra gave synopsis of his book and read out a paragraph from it.

Speaking on the book, Chandra felt that fiction was the best way to convey the wildlife conservation message. “Fiction allows more space to make a message larger and also gives more liberties while exploring a particular topic,” said Chandra. Chandra believes that social media is a powerful element in spreading the message of wildlife conservation. “Through social media, we can reach a larger audience to help in wildlife conservation and it must be utilised as much as possible,” said Chandra. On how people can help in conservation of wildlife and stop poaching, Chandra said, “For poachers, the hunt is about survival. It is about being a part of a wildlife mafia which will not let them go easily once they are a part of it. For a

who should contest the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Beed, she added that her family has not decided as yet as to who between her and her younger sister Dr Preetam Munde should contest which election. Fadnavis disclosed that the Yatra will be flagged off by Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje-Scindia from Sindkhed Raja on August 27. The yatra will cover 21 districts, 79 Assembly constituencies, 600 villages and cover more than 3,000 km and culminate at Chaundi. During the fortnight long tour, she will hold more than 65 rallies and more than 200 welcome meetings. During these rallies, each day, a prominent state and national level leader will take part in it. Replying to queries over promoting dynastic politics, he clarified that while the party opposed dynastic politics it was not averse to promoting kith and kin of leaders who had leadership qualities in alliance partner. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan is also not happy with the party high command's decision to set up a collective leadership. Two of his bitter rivals, Ashok Chavan and Rane, have landed plum assignments – co-ordinating election management and heading campaign strategy respectively. According to sources, the Congress leadership has failed miserable to diagnose the reasons behind its failure in the Lok Sabha polls. This new exercise will add to the ongoing resentment in the rank and file, and aggravate the dissidence. In fact, how many of those who make up the collective leadership can win the elections is a debatable issue.

forest officer, conservation is a duty. So at present they must go beyond duty to help stop poaching.” Chandra gave an example from his life about how he encountered a poacher. “Once I had caught a poacher and registered a case against him when I had become a forest officer. I also deposed in the court case against him. But I didn't follow up on the case that much. Years later, I met the lawyer who was fighting a case against the poacher at that time. When I asked about the case, he said that the poacher was let off. He told me that I shouldn't have just filed a case against him but there are many other steps I should have taken at that time to make sure the poacher couldn't escape punishment. So that's why I feel we must go beyond our duty to stop poaching.” Chandra had faith that the present govt would help in wildlife conservation and would be working hard in this field.

them. Although Fadnavis was tight-lipped about big names joining from opposition ranks in the coming days, sources did admit that former Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) minister Babanrao Pachpute was likely to

join the party on August 20. On the issue of finalising seat-sharing between the allies, he said that the party will try to announce significant number of names before the notification for the Assembly elections are announced.

HE separatists in Kashmir have always been in close touch with Pakistan's establishment. They declare they want a separate state but actually they would like to join Pakistan. This is their hidden agenda. The moment the secretary-level meetings between India and Pakistan were fixed — August 25 — Pakistan authorities started contacting the Kashmiri separatists. The Pakistan High Commission in Delhi has already met the separatist leader Yasin Malik. There was a furore about this in India, but Yasin said there could be no criticism when people in the two countries make bilateral efforts to solve the Kashmir problem. He sounded so innocent but the fact that Pakistan's ISI keeps in close touch with the leaders of the Hurriyat Conference provides grounds for suspicion. What is to be noted is that the Hurriyat leaders have gone to Pakistan and met terrorist Hafiz Saeed. What business did they have with a terrorist who was responsible for the savage mission in Mumbai in which over 160 people were butchered. And what did the Hurriyat leaders discuss with the Pakistan High Commission with whom they had a meeting in Delhi? Why was the Pak High Commission so keen about meeting them — even before the meeting of foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan? The Omar Abdullah government in Jammu & Kashmir should have taken action against them long ago and nipped their anti-Indian activities in the bud.

spate of personal accounts by the insiders has made the Indian political scene interesting and chirpy. However subjective, they do put in the public domain some information which was not available earlier. There is nothing earth shaking in the revelations made. But they do confirm some of the perceptions about our governance. For example, it was rumoured that Congress president Sonia Gandhi wielded authority without responsibility and ran the government from her residence. This is now confirmed. Official files were carried to her residence for direction. Till today, she has not said a word by way of explanation to defend herself. It appears that she believes that she doesn’t have to explain as if it is the dynasty’s prerogative. Those who have followed its ways will not be surprised about it. Jawaharlal Nehru allowed his daughter, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, to run the government when he was in bed due to illness. On her part, she constituted a coterie to rule, which was an extra-constitutional authority.

Lal Bahadur Shastri I was then the press officer of Lal Bahadur Shastri, minister without a portfolio. Nehru had brought him back after sending him out of government under the K. Kamaraj plan, a ruse to oust Nehru’s critics, particularly Morarji Desai and Jagjivan Ram, from the government. The prime minister’s residence was a twostorey building, Nehru staying upstairs. Who from among the visitors would be allowed to go upstairs was dependent on Mrs. Indira Gandhi’s decision. She did not like Shastri and would keep him waiting. Once, still working as press officer, I pointed out to Nehru’s aide, T.N. Sheshan, that Shastri, then out of office, was kept waiting. He told me not to get involved in such things as Mrs. Indira Gandhi did it intentionally. “This is politics”, he said. The ruling party may have changed at the Centre but the political culture has not. We are feudal in our outlook. This trait transcends other considerations. It does not go well with the democratic temperament. But it is there and has not undergone any perceptible change in the past. Those who come to power become dictators in action. BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar through long national struggle set up paraphernalia which rejected liberalism that bound the different elements together. The BJP is different. None of its leaders went to jail during freedom struggle. The party should have reorganized the polity to suit their way of thinking and their way of doing things. Alas, the BJP has adopted the same old administrative methods which give all the leeway to bureaucrats. The BJP should have moved the machinery to the direction which will work the way it wants. Perhaps the Modi government should have appointed an administrative reforms commission to suggest steps to implement the saffronised agenda. The administration is still stuck in the old ways, partly secular and partly democratic but mostly the withered ideas of the RSS leaders. True, there are so many administrative reform commission reports accumulating dust.

What is innocence and the way to become innocent? S

ONJA, innocence is your very nature. You do not have to become it, you are already it. You are born innocent. Then layers and layers of conditioning are imposed upon your innocence. Your innocence is like a mirror and conditioning is like layers of dust. The mirror has not to be achieved, the mirror is already there — or rather, here. The mirror is not lost, it is only hidden behind the layers of dust. You don't have to follow a way to reach your nature because you cannot leave your nature, you cannot go anywhere else. Even if you wanted to, it is impossible. That's exactly the definition of nature: nature means that which cannot be left behind, that which cannot be renounced. But you can forget about it. And that's exactly what has happened. The mirror is not lost but forgotten — forgotten because it is not functioning anymore as a

mirror. Not that any defect has arisen in it, just layers of dust are covering it. All that is needed is to clean it, to remove those layers of dust. The process of becoming innocent is not really a process of becoming, it is a process of discovering your being. It is a discovery, not an achievement. You don't attain to some-

MATTER & SPIRIT thing new, you simply attain to that which you have always been. It is a forgotten language. It happens many times: you see a person on the road, you recognize him, his face seems familiar. Suddenly you remember also that you know his name. You say, "It is just on the tip of my tongue," but still it is not coming to you. What is happening? If it is just on the tip of your tongue, then why can't you say it? You know that you know it, but still you are not able to remember it. And the more you try, the

It can be argued that the electorate faces a big problem. People cast vote in favour of the BJP in the recent Lok Sabha elections. This was not because they liked the party. But it was because they were sick and tired of the Congress rule. Party president Sonia Gandhi herself admitted that the voters did not like the Congress. But she said she had no idea that their anger would convert itself into vengeance. They had voted the BJP to power. So much so they have given the party a majority by itself. But what would they do when they get disappointed with the BJP? They do not want to go back to the Congress. But what option do they have? That is the reason why the Congress is sitting pretty. People are waiting for the Modi government to perform and prove itself. Instead of that, the saffronisation programme is taking shape. The alternative could have been the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). In fact, it evoked hope when Gandhian Anna Hazare held meetings in different parts of the country to warn the people against corruption. Their response was solid and AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal was voted to power in Delhi. But then Hazare distanced himself from Kejriwal and his dictatorial tendency, besides the ambition of a few put cold water on finding a clean alternative. Unfortunately, the old cultures do not disappear quickly. more difficult it becomes, because making an effort makes you more tense, and when you are tense you are farther away from your nature, you are farther away from that which is already there. When you are relaxed you are closer; when you are utterly relaxed, it will surface of its own accord. So you try hard, but it doesn't come, so you forget all about it. Then lying down in your bath, or just swimming in the pool, and you are not even trying to remember that man's name when suddenly it bubbles up. What has happened? You were not trying to remember, and you were relaxed. When you are relaxed you are wide, when you are tense you become narrow — the more tense, the more narrow. The passage between you and that which is inside you becomes so narrow that nothing can pass through it, not even a single name. All the great scientific discoveries have been made in this very mysterious way — in this very unscientific way, so to speak. – Osho

Indians outplayed by the English IT is highly deplorable that the Team India could not last even 30 overs in the second innings and were dismissed for a paltry 94 runs. This was the second ignominious defeat in three days and the Englishmen showed very clearly that the team's win in the second Test at Lord's was just a fluke. The batsmen do not have it in them to score 300 to 400 runs in an innings which is normally expected from a Test team. It looked as though their bowlers had cast a spell on our men. Their batsmen were also far superior to ours. In contrast, our women's team had done extremely well. Team India should be called back and the women's team asked to play the remaining ODIs and T20 on its behalf and, more important, this man Duncan Fletcher should sent back home.

INDIANS were expecting an easy series win in England after the Lord's win but were really shocked to see the team disintegrating without the semblance of a fight. The win over Team India was achieved with the astute leadership of Alstair Cook. After being 01 in the series, Cook turned the tables to his team's advantage. After the Ahemedabad Test loss during Indian leg, we expected a series win, but England won the four-match series 2-1. PM Narendra Modi’s speech at our country’s 67th Independence Day at the heavily packed Red Fort venue was exceptional and off-the-cuff. In fact, his apparition of a strong and independent India needs the support of every Indian. Never in the history of Indian politics has any PM ever made such a long speech without any written script. Modi is determined to develop rural area, we must take new tools and modern technology at the door of the farmers and artisans with a view to improve their working and living conditions and this is feasible by rendering extension services using mobile demonstrations on the go. In fact, he is giving the right direction to make India into the dream of India which our political leaders had forgotten in the process of making their own future. Congratulations Narendra Modi. You are the exceptional PM that our country has been waiting for.

Brilliant media ploy IT is a US media ploy to shift world's focus from Israel's Gaza massacre to a new dubious account of unsubstantiated bits and pieces of news of hunting of Yazidis, which invariably is being disputed by even the US media's own reporters. It is a shame that India's Left liberals are ever ready to pounce on any questionable action supposedly committed by Muslims in any part of the world. Their hare-brained trigger-happy reaction to crimes that may yet to be proved as facts does not give them any credit for mature in-depth understanding of complex situations around the world and the clever manipulation of world news by media experts from US and Israel. Vintage film items to go under hammer at Osian’s auction S

ome of the most coveted items of the bygone and present-day era of India cinema including original art works from iconic movies like Baiju Bawra, Mother India and Mughal-e-Azam will go under the hammer at an auction of rare and vintage film memorabilia in the city next month. The nearly 220 Lots in Osian's Group's The Greatest Indian Show on Earth series auction on September 12 is expected to fetch in excess of Rs.75 lakh. An opening preview exhibition will be held on August 22 at the Tao Art Gallery. Featuring in the auction will be some rare items of India cinema with a focus on Prabhat Film Company, Prakash Pictures and Bombay Talkies, reports PTI. Some original and historically significant items that will be placed under the gavel include an exclusive 1957, rare six sheet poster of Mother India and an original hand-painted hardboard standee of Yahudi with Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari in their famous embrace. Collectibles from classics like Mughal-e-Azam, Mother India, Ganga Jamuna, Baiju Bawra and Pakeezah among a host of others will also go under the hammer. Memorabilia pertaining to some of the earliest films made by Prabhat Film Company such as Amrit

Manthan (1934), Manoos (Marathi, 1939) and Aadmi (Hindi, 1939) are among others of historical film value. Very rare original art works from iconic films such as Baiju Bawra, Shree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Bhakta Dhruva from Prakash Pictures find representation at this auction. The four original artworks for the Window Showcards of Baiju Bawra deserve special mention. There will be a focus on the Kapoors, India's first family of filmstars, with memorabilia from movies of Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Rishi and Randhir Kapoor to the Manish Malhotra costumes worn by Karishma Kapoor in N.N. Osian's founder chairman Neville Tuli commenting on the larger preservation needs rues that the scale of the passion and commitment required is lacking. "Unless the film fraternity, especially the younger generation recog-

nises this responsibility, the fact will be that the world's largest film industry will have the world's smallest collection of itself in physical and digital terms," he says. Auctions such as The Greatest Indian Show on Earth, according to him, "bring to the surface this critical need". Another highlight of the auction is the showcasing one of the greatest onscreen romances of all times between Dharmendra and Hema Malini through memorabilia from films like Charas, Jugnu, Razia Sultan, Chacha Bhatija, Raja Jaani, Dost and Prem Chumban. The memorabilia includes posters, photographic stills mounted on lobby cards and song synopsis booklets. The section 'Leading Heroines from 1950s-70s' features Madhubala and Hema Malini, who not just graced the posters of her films, but whose image was used on packets of beedis, soaps, calendars with aplomb and was one of the leading brand ambassadors of the 1970s80s is another area of focus. hile a visit to certain parts of the world will tempt you to indulge in junk and processed food or rent a private car to sightsee, there are several places that boast of healthy infrastructure and clean air. We’re kicking off this two-part series with international destinations, so take a look at our favourites cities, where eating local cuisines coupled with cleaner air, means that you’ll come back refreshed and rejuvenated.

With very low mortality rates, Singapore is one of the world’s cleanest cities. This is partly due to their strict anti-littering laws and mass transit system. Of course, the number of parks and mountain trails also make the air cleaner. The city makes an effort to stay green and there are several marathons and sporting events that are organised on a regular basis. When you’re in Singapore, cycle or walk through the Park Connector Network. The 200km-long paths link all the green spaces in the city. Take a cool evening walk at the Botanic Gardens to observe different species of orchids. There are also free walking tours, such as Singapore Footprints. Singaporean food is very similar to food that is available across other cities in Asia. They eat a lot of seafood, generously sprinkled with peanut and doused in coconut curry. Try the Chili Crab, which is one of their most famous dishes, and don’t miss out on eating their healthy,

tropical fruits. If you must have a noodle dish, try the Char Kway Teow, which is stirfried and healthier than most. You can also try Wholemeal Ban Mian which is served

The land of cherry blossoms and karaoke is a good holiday destination because the metropolis is very healthy! Regardless of how commercialised it seems, the wealthy city has a lower greenhouse gas emissions level, and citizens follow a healthy lifestyle. They were also found to be one of the cities with the best hygiene and diet. The first thing you should do is visit Meiji Shrine, to get a little peace of mind. The calming oasis houses a Buddhist temple, where you can tie wishes on a prayer wall and sit in the outdoors to collect your thoughts. Don’t forget to visit Venus Fort, where you can walk around to explore the area. There are also several cycling trails around the city that you should make the most of. Tokyo is home to the largest fish market — Tsukiji. Eat the sushi there (make sure you find out if they are open when you plan to visit) and watch the live tuna auctions. Several restaurants in the city serve healthy versions of traditional dishes; simply look for the word yuuki on the menu, which means organic. You should also visit the UN Farmers market that takes place there every weekend. To make your sushi meal healthier, skip the rice and ask for sashimi. Opt for yakitori (broiled skewered meat), sukiyaki (which is simmered chicken with vegetables and tofu) and ebisu, which is a shrimp appetiser. Also, don’t forget to try some nori (seaweed). One of the healthiest dishes to try is natto — but only if you’re feeling adventurous. The fermented soybeans look terrible, but are rich in protein and vitamins. TOOTHWISE

Today we at Toothwise would like to share with you answers to some very commonly asked questions in our practice. Can root canal treatment be painless ? Root canal treatment is needed when the nerve or pulp tissue becomes inflamed or infected. The inflammation or infection can occur from a number of ways: Decay that extends into the pulp chamber, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a fracture or chip in the tooth that allows bacteria to spread into the pulp chamber. Also, a traumatic injury to a tooth may cause pulp damage even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to a dental abscess. When people are told that they need root canal treatment, they usually think about pain. However, the pain they feel is caused by an infection and not by root canal treatment. A root canal is done to eliminate that pain. The root canal procedure itself is painless. Before starting a local anesthetic numbs the tooth and the surrounding area making treatment comfortable. In some cases where the nerve is degenerated, painless treatment can be done even without giving an anesthetic. Over time a treated tooth dehydrates which makes the tooth brittle and more susceptible to fracture. Most often, a crown is placed after root canal treatment is completed to protect the tooth and restore full function. Dental stem cell banking ? Stem cells have the ability to change into different cell types. They also have the ability to aid in the healing of damaged tissue. These are just two of the reasons why scientists and doctors are so excited about the growing role of stem cells to treat disease, injury, and the deterioration of tissue due to aging. Dental stem cells are adult stem cells found in both baby teeth and wisdom teeth. Dental stem cells belong to a class of adult stem cells referred to as ‘mesenchymal stem cells’ and have been shown to be able to differentiate into bone, dental tissue, cartilage, and muscle, and there is evidence that they may be able to differentiate into neural tissue. They are being studied for applications in regenerative dentistry and medicine. What is the difference between cord blood banking and dental stem cell banking? Should you do both ? Dental pulp contains mostly mesenchymal stem cells while cord blood consists predominantly of hematopoietic stem cells; bone marrow contains both types of stem cells. If you banked your child’s cord blood

cells, there are still significant potential benefits if you bank his or her dental stem cells as well. Also if you missed the chance to store cord blood, you may want to consider the range of potential applications that may be possible with stem cells from your child’s teeth – either baby teeth or wisdom teeth. While cord blood stem cells have proven valuable in the regeneration of blood cell types, dental stem cells are able to regenerate solid tissue types that cord blood are less well suited for - such as potentially repairing connective tissues, dental tissues, neuronal tissue and bone. Do you need to bank more than 1 tooth ? Although it is not known for certain how many cells will be needed for clinical use in the future, it is recommend ed that you store more than one tooth if possible. For this reason, there are no extra charges when you bank up to four teeth from the same patient when they are collected and shipped at the same time.

Do you need to restore milk teeth ?

Milk teeth in optimum health are important for your child's oral health now and in the future. Properly restored milk teeth are a must for aesthetics, confidence, speech and chewing. Milk teeth ensure that permanent teeth erupt in their correct positions by maintaining space and guiding their path. To restore decayed milk teeth you may be advised a root canal, a crown, or simply a filling. these must be completed. Some severely damaged teeth may not be salvable. Space maintainers are required in such cases so that the permanent teeth have space to erupt. Children may need sedation or even general anaesthesia in case of extensive dental work. As the old saying goes prevention is better than cure! Take children for regular dental checkups every 6 months. Make sure they get sealants and flouride treatment if required. >> The Waimea Canyon in Hawaii is a trekker’s paradise and (bottom) the Lomilomi Salmon is the region’s trademark dish

HAWAII Hawaii is often thought of as a destination where you relax on a beach. However, in reality it is a trekkers paradise, as the region offers terrain that can easily replace the most rigorous gym machines. In fact, studies have shown that the citizens of Hawaii live longer, are less stressed and are happier than Americans outside Hawaii. The 5:2 diet lets you eat five days a week and requires you to starve for the next two days. Shirley Mistry tells you all about the diet, how it can help and the risks that are attached to it

I

ntermittent fasting forms the basis of the 5:2 diet, which lets you eat for five days in a week, and then makes you fast for two days. It promises to make the process of losing weight stress-free, as you only restrict your diet for two days in a week. Popular books that explain this diet include The Fast Diet, by Michael Mosley and The 5:2 Diet Book, by Kate Harrison. Although both books have a slightly different take on the 5:2 diet, the basis of the diet is essentially the same.

While almost anyone can follow this diet, it is not recommended for children and teenagers, simply because they may not consume enough of the important nutrients that they need for healthy growth, and might even develop unhealthy eating habits. Similarly, pregnant women and women who are breast feeding are better off not following this diet as they may miss out on the nutrients that they need for themselves, as well as their babies. People who don’t have stable blood sugar levels should also avoid this diet. If your blood sugar levels are either too high, or too low, you risk suffering from nausea, dizziness, headaches and poor concentration. If you suffer from an illness, or are on medication, check with your doctor before you begin this diet. Also, since the effects of this diet on humans is still being studied (they have only tested it on animals so far), don’t embark on it without doing your research.

To formulate the list, CSPI surveyed several fast food meals to find of the unhealthiest nine meals. Topping the list was Red Robin

Gourmet Burgers’ meal of A.1. Peppercorn Burger, Bottomless Steak Fries with a Salted Caramel Milkshake. It may sound delicious enough to leave you salivating, but the meal contains a whopping 3,540 calories! To take this number into context, you need to remember that a healthy male needs around 2,500 calories a day (women need around 2,000). According to CSPI’s estimates, the meal includes 38 teaspoons of sugar and you’d need to briskly walk for around 12 hours straight

The Farfalle with Chicken & Roasted Garlic sounds healthy, but according to CSPI, the cream sauce makes it a meal with as many as 2,410 calories, and you’d need to jog for five hours just to be able to burn it off.

10 ways To:

Have a HealTHy day

Following a healthy schedule every day is important. But, if you’re too busy to plan your day or just don’t know how to go about doing it, Dev Goswami is here to help you out. He gives you a simple, daily schedule to ensure that you get enough exercise, eat right and keep stress away. You can adjust the timings to suit your schedule, but try and maintain the gap between two tasks, so that you space everything out correctly

11am: Take a break This depends on what time you reach work, but around an hour, or one and a half hours after you reach office, take a five minute break — but, not just from your work. Move around, whether it is to chat with your colleagues or to buy lunch. Also, remember that you shouldn’t be drinking too much coffee. Two or three cups of coffee are alright (and can even be healthy), but excessive caffeine consumption can harm your physical, as well as mental health.

5

1

7am: wake up It is important to wake up at the same time every day. This helps keep your body clock in order and prevents dangerous sleeping disorders. Waking up at the same time is a habit that you should follow even when you go to sleep later than you normally would the night before. Another tip that you must follow, is to meditate for five minutes immediately after you wake up. It will help you start your day on a relaxed note and keep stress away. Also, after you get out of bed, do easy exercises (push-ups, stretches or a few yoga asanas) for around 10 minutes before you start with your day’s tasks.

2

8am: eaT breakfasT You should eat within an hour after you wake up, so that you have the time to talk to your family, read newspapers and get dressed for work or the gym at a relaxed pace. Trying to get ready in a rush will result in you starting your day stressed out — which will have a negative impact in the long run. Eat a heavy, protein-rich breakfast if you’re going to straight to work; but if you prefer exercising in the morning, eat a light breakfast and supplement it with fruits and shakes after your workout.

3 8.30am: work ouT This depends on whether you prefer working out in the morning or in the evening. If you prefer mornings, now is the time for you to head to the gym. A mix of three days of cardio, two days of strength training and one day of aerobics (with one rest day) every week, will help you stay fit. Your training schedule will depend on your personal goals. So, ask a trainer to draw up a schedule for you. Avoid working out for more than an hour, but make sure that you exercise for at least 30 minutes every day. If you prefer working out in the evening, subtract around 30 minutes from all the timings that we’ve mentioned from here on. 9.30am: on The way To work By now, you should be on your way to work. While commuting to and fro, avoid reading, because the constant vehicular movement will damage your eyesight. Listen to music or simply form a mental list of all the things that you have to do that day. Once you reach work, make a physical to-do list — this will not only help you work optimally, but will also help you have a relaxed, stress-free day.

4

8

4pm: Take a break & eaT a snack Take 2-minute breaks in between your lunch hour and tea break, to rest your wrists (this is extremely important if your job involves constantly typing on a keyboard) and eyes. Also, if you suffer from back problems or your muscles feel sore, you should perform some chair exercises. In the evening, take a stroll around your neighbourhood or the office building to give yourself a break. This break should be around 10-15 minutes long.

6.30pm: Leave work If you prefer working out in the evening, you should head to the gym now. The 30 minutes we asked you to subtract from our timings will now come into play. Follow the same instructions mentioned in point no. 3 and remember to drink enough water. If necessary, supplement it with sports drinks that replenish your electrolyte levels. 12pm: have a snack A short while after your morning break, eat a small snack. It could be a fruit or even a small part of your lunch. As long as all your meals give you the necessary nutrients when they are put together, it doesn’t matter what you eat when. But, remember that eating a small snack will prevent you from overeating at lunch.

6 7 1.30pm: Lunch This step is rather selfexplanatory, but remember not to eat extremely fast or work while you’re eating. Eating at your desk is unhygienic and will prevent you from realising when you’re full. Eating slowly prevents digestive problems and also gives your body enough time to tell you when it’s full. Remember to stay away from work while eating lunch — you’re not going to get much work done anyway, and it will only make you feel stressed and anxious.

Ditch a Day... O

... of work we mean. If your entire life revolves around work, weekends are nonexistent and you can’t catch a break, you may need to take a day off, says Rhea Dhanbhoora

ver the years, several studies have highlighted the importance of spending time with ourselves, taking a day off, taking a mental vacation... but most of us are still caught up in the chaotic web of everyday life. If you spend your entire day running to and from work, your weekends trying to keep up with social engagements and most of your evenings trying to be there for family and friends, you’re probably reading this and nodding along as we tell you that you’re emotionally and physically drained. Taking a little mental vacation is recommended, but when you’re overworked, stressed out and tired, a weekend just won’t cut it. Take a day off from work instead and give yourself a three-day weekend. Read on to find out whether you need a day off.

Try to leave a gap of at least 2-3 hours between your dinner and bedtime. During this period, you can relax by watching TV, playing a game or relaxing with your friends and family. An hour before bedtime, read a book or indulge in a hobby that doesn’t demand too much brain power or physical activity — it will help prepare your brain for sleep. Avoid caffeine after 7pm and stop watching TV or reading on your phone or computer an hour before you go to bed, as it these habits make it hard for you to fall asleep. how To Take The Day off

of life and breathe a little. Read a book, listen to music or just make yourself a home-cooked meal that you love and eat it really slowly, in order to relish every last bite.

So, we’ve told you that you need a day off — but, how do you do it? Telling your boss that the stress of your job is getting to you is not a great way to get your next promotion! Never lie to your boss about being unwell, it’s a bad habit and if you’re found out, it could put your job and your reputation at stake in your office. Instead, take a day off for personal reasons. Pick a light day, mid-week, when you know that you’re not putting the rest of your team in jeopardy, or leaving a client high and dry. This way, it will be easier for you to switch off from work without feeling guilty.

make a list: And check it twice! Don’t put anything workrelated on it; simply list things that you’ve always wanted to do but never had the time to before. You will feel better if you’re actually productive. Just remember not to tire yourself out. catch up with your friends: And family of course. Stress can often get aggravated when you feel disconnected from your loved ones. Make time to speak with them, visit relatives or catch up for lunch or coffee. But, don’t use this as an excuse to party all day or you’ll end up feeling more tired.

whaT To Do The first thing not to do, is check your work emails. Whether you think that you have to or not, the truth is that the world will keep spinning and if you plan your leave well, nothing will crash and burn without you. Make sure that you spend at least half an hour in the morning, mentally preparing yourself to stay away from work for the entire day. sleep, but don’t oversleep: You don’t want to spend your entire day off in bed! If you do, you’ll wake up irritated, with sore muscles and no peace of mind. Sleep in, past the time that you need to get to work, but make sure that you’re making the most of the morning too.

Think about it: Spend the day collecting your thoughts. Make sure that you know where you are in your life and whether it’s all worth it. We get so caught up in our daily routines, that we’re rarely left with the chance to figure out what it is that we really want. Use this day to make sure that you’re on the right track and if you’re not, think about how you’re going to make some positive changes. The sound of silence: Spend your day quietly. Don’t plan big events or spend it running from one mall to the other. This is a day for you to take a break from the chaos

pamper yourself: Indulge in a spa treatment, go swimming or take a walk. Being cooped up indoors all day, won’t always help. But, make sure that whatever you do, it takes your mind off everything tiring and stressful.

Down by half If you are planning on starting an extreme weight loss regime or have recently lost a drastic amount of weight, Shirley Mistry tells you about some of the changes you can expect in your body

W

ho wouldn’t want to sport a svelte figure, devoid of even an inch of flab? While some people are naturally gifted with the perfect figure, others have to diligently pump iron at the gym to achieve their fitness goals. However, when you drastically lose weight, there are several changes that your body undergoes that no one talks about. A weight loss programme that offers gradual results is the best way to go, and if you are wondering why, take a look at some of the effects that losing a lot of weight in a short span of time has on your body. Loose skin: Your skin is the cover that encases your entire body. When you put on weight, your skin stretches to cover the increased mass. If you suddenly put on too much weight, or lose several kilos in as little as a few weeks, your skin does not get enough time to adapt to the changes in your body, and so, it is not able to shrink or expand accordingly, which is why you are left with loose skin hanging off certain areas of your body. This doesn’t happen when you follow a gradual weight loss programme, because the changes occur over a few weeks, allowing your skin ample time to adjust as well. Stretch marks: If your skin is sensitive or you are genetically prone to stretch marks, expect a few of them to crop up when you suddenly lose several kilos. When you lose a lot of weight from a certain area of your body, the mass that was keeping your skin taut is suddenly gone, making your skin hang, weigh down and stretch. Just like with loose skin, stretch marks can be avoided if you follow a plan that ensures gradual weight loss. Sagging breasts: Another side-effect of extreme weight loss, sagging breasts occur for the same reasons that stretch marks and loose skin do. Breasts have three layers of tissue, one of which is known as the connective tissue. Elastic in nature, the tissue expands to accommodate increased mass when you put on weight. So, when you lose weight drastically, the tissue does not get enough time to re-size itself, causing your breasts to sag. Severe exhaustion: Losing a lot of weight in a short

time-frame requires a lot of will power. Not only do you have to change your lifestyle and follow a strict diet, you also have to stick to a rigorous gym routine and constantly push yourself to do better. As a result of this, you will feel mentally and physically exhausted and sleepier than usual. There is nothing alarming about this; considering your body has been through so much, it is bound to be stressed and tired. Give it the rest that it needs, or you will put yourself at risk of burning out and injuring yourself. High cortisol levels: Due to severe exhaustion, your body produces high levels of cortisol — a stress hormone that can negatively affect you when you lose weight. It may hamper the progress of your weight loss plan and can even scatter your focus, thereby reducing your productivity, both while exercising and while performing everyday tasks. While there are medicines that can help lower your cortisol levels, the easiest way to maintain stable cortisol levels, without compromising on your weight loss is by engaging in activities such as yoga and cycling. Not only do they burn calories, they also reduce stress. Risk of relapsing: When people want to lose a lot of weight, they always have a clear mental image of what they would like to look like once the gruelling weight loss process is over. These images are often drawn from celebrity photos and weight loss stories that are published in magazines — both of which feature photographs that are usually digitally re-touched. As a result, they aren’t prepared for the negative effects, such as stretch marks and sagging skin, making the final result seem unappealing and disappointing. This causes several people to give up, quit exercising and seek comfort in eating junk food or over-eating, which can undo your hard work in just a few days.

women are prone to arthritis at a young age

Studies suggest that 60% of all Indian women are prone to suffering from arthritis at a young age. Shirley Mistry gives you a brief overview of the condition

A

rthritis refers to joint pain that may, or may not be accompanied by inflammation. However, it is a broad term and is used to describe around a hundred joint-related problems, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia and chronic lower back pain. Dr. Atul Gattani, rheumatologist at Sterling Wockhardt Hospital, Vashi, tells us what causes the early onset of arthritis. He explains that genetic factors, when combined with a hectic lifestyle and deteriorating environmental conditions are common causes of early arthritis. When these factors are able to break down your immune system, they cause joint-related problems and can lead to arthritis, as early as when you are in your thirties! Speaking about the process, Dr. Atul explains, “Until the age of 30, people build more bones than they lose. However, after the age of 35, the bone breakdown is faster than bone buildup, resulting in a gradual loss of bone mass. Women are at a higher risk, because their muscles and ligaments in between the joints are smaller to begin with and tend to shrink even more, increasing their risk of injuries.” Research in the field also indicates a direct link between arthritis and your immune system. “Inflammation and pain caused by arthritis can trigger an autoimmune response from your body that is meant to help heal the damage, but it may temporarily worsen the symptoms. Your immune system can trigger autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, causing severe damage to the cells in your body. People should be aware about the joint-related problems and take quick action to get accurate diagnosis and treatment, as soon as they experience the first signs of discomfort,” he adds. If you do suffer from arthritis, or suspect that you do, here are few things that Dr. Atul recommends you follow. “People suffering from arthritis need to take very good care of themselves and avoid stretching their joints and ligaments. Regardless of the type of arthritis, the common symptoms for all arthritis disorders include varied levels of pain, swelling, joint stiffness and sometimes, a constant ache around the joints. Since one in every eight men and one in every four women are prone to experiencing symptoms of arthritis, visit a doctor immediately if you spot the symptoms,” he says.

« problem solver: ask our beauty expert

BarBara, our BeauTy experT, will help Fix your proBlems

Dear Barbara, I have very curly hair and thanks to the humidity, none of my hairstyles stay in place for longer than two to three hours. I have tried using hairspray, but it doesn’t help much. It helps the hairstyle stay put for an extra hour or two, but, my hair always becomes frizzy again. What should do? — myra shah, Napean sea road Dear myra, You need to look for hairspray that is specifically meant for frizzy hair, since regular hairspray isn’t helping. Also, for when you need extra-hold, starch can come in handy. Make a starch solution by dissolving a small amount of starch powder in a bottle of water. Once you have styled your hair, spray some of this solution on to your hair to keep it in place all day. However, don’t go overboard, as it can make your hair look extremely stiff. Dear Barbara, I am a sales attendant in a department store and so, I spend the entire day on my feet. By the end of the day, my feet become dry and cracked. I work long hours and don’t have time to spend hours taking care of my feet, but I desperately need a quick fix. Please help! — sameera Khan, Bandra (w) Dear sameera, If you spend long hours on your feet every day, there’s no way to avoid problems such as blisters, dry skin, sore soles and aching feet. Apart from soaking your feet in warm water and using a foot scrub, try this treatment to rejuvenate them: puree 2 cucumbers, 2 tbsp of oil and 2 tbsp of lemon juice. Divide the mixture equally between two large Ziploc bags and insert one foot in each bag. Leave your feet in the mix for around 10 minutes, before rinsing it off and moisturising your feet. The cucumber helps refresh and soothe sore feet, the olive oil moisturises your skin and the lemon removes impurities and exfoliates your skin.

>> Study the shampoo aisle for a while before you buy a suitable shampoo for your hair

Not your type No we’re not about to give you relationship advice. Dev Goswami attempts to find out whether you really need different shampoos for different hair types

T

he next time you’re at the supermarket, observe the shampoo aisle for a while. It will be filled with hair products from top to bottom, all promising to do different things to your hair and solve a variety of problems. Each brand will have at least 5-6 different kinds of shampoo — from those meant for dry hair to those that promise to prevent dandruff and itchiness. And, that’s not all. You’ll also find hair strengthening shampoo, shampoo that promises shine and shampoo to prevent frizz. So, do these labels and recommendations actually benefit you, or is it all just a marketing ploy? Would using an anti-dandruff shampoo mean that you’ll lose out on the smooth, shiny hair that another shampoo would promise? We attempt to find out.

TruTh or jusT a ploy? The first question that we’re going to answer is whether it is necessary to buy different types of shampoos for different hair types. Conspiracy theorists might be disappointed, but the answer is yes. Dr. Geeta Oberoi, a dermatologist and the managing director of Skin n You clinic, tells us, “Since everyone has different hair types, it is important that you use shampoo that best suits your hair.” If you are wondering why, and what the difference between the shampoos is, read on. Whether it’s a bout of dandruff, a flaky scalp or dry hair, every problem has its

l

l

own triggers and solutions. So, a shampoo that focuses on treating dandruff, would include ingredients that are different from these in a shampoo for dry hair. Whether it’s dandruff or dry hair, certain ingredients either treat the condition or aggravate it. So, a shampoo that focuses on treating oily hair would need to include ingredients that treat the problem, while avoiding those that make the condition worse. An ingredient that would prevent oily hair, might aggravate a frizzy hair problem. That being said, it is important that you know what to look for when you’re searching for a shampoo — we aren’t saying that any promise a brand makes is false, but it never hurts to make a wellinformed decision. l For oily hair: Dr. Geeta tells us that for oily hair, you need to avoid shampoos and conditioners that include moisturisers. Also avoid shampoos that mention the word ‘conditioning’ and look for pathenol or wheat protein in the list of ingredients on the label —

l

they help thicken hair while preventing an oil build-up. For a dandruff problem: If you suffer from dandruff, Dr. Geeta tells us that you need to look for shampoos that contain ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione, selenium sulphide or piroctone olamine. Buying an anti-dandruff shampoo is alright, but unless it has these ingredients, it won’t help. Dry and damaged: Having dry hair means that you will suffer from split ends or that your hair is damaged — which is why the words dry and damaged are usually clubbed together. Shampoos meant for dry and damaged hair perfectly illustrate the need to use different shampoos according to hair type. Dr. Geeta explains. “Dry, frizzy hair and split ends are the result of detergents such as sodium lauryl sulphate that are present in shampoos. So, you need to look for a shampoo that doesn’t have this ingredient and instead, has coconut, avocado or grape seed oil.” Coloured hair: When it comes to coloured hair, it is very important that you use the right shampoo because otherwise, you could lose the effects of your expensive colour treatment after just a few washes. You need shampoos that contain fewer harsh chemicals, so ask your salon for recommendations. Dr. Geeta also adds, “For coloured hair, use a shampoo with a pH of between 4.5 to 5.5.”

Australia, India to sign civil nuke pact next month M

ELBOURNE/NEW DELHI: Australia and India have reached a deal on the much awaited civil nuclear agreement, which will be formally signed by Prime Minister Tony Abbott during his visit to Delhi next month, according to a report on Monday. The "agreement has now been reached, with Indian officials convincing their Australian counterparts that the uranium will not end up in nuclear weapons," said the report published by the Australian Broadcasting Cooperation. It said the two sides have struck the deal. Prime Minister "Abbott is due to visit India early next month to formally sign the agreement," it

said, adding sources have said the negotiations have been concluded relatively quickly compared to India's dealings with other exporters. The negotiations between the two sides have been on since 2012 after Labor party reversed its decision to ban the uranium sale to India because New Delhi has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Australia holds about a third of the world's recoverable uranium resources, and exports nearly 7,000 tonnes a year. Energy-starved India is looking to nuclear power to supplement its existing options to fuel economic growth.

132pc rise in cases of juveniles’ attack on women N

EW DELHI: Assault by juveniles on women to outrage her modesty saw a 132 per cent increase and rapes committed by juveniles witnessed an increase of 60.3 per cent last year. The report of the National Crime Records Bureau said the highest increase in the incidents of crimes committed by juveniles in 2013 was reported under assault on woman to outrage her modesty -- 132.3 per cent -- followed by insult to the modesty of women -- 70.5 per cent and rape - 60.3 per cent. Among the total juveniles apprehended under IPC, 66.3 per cent belonged to the age group of 16-18 years. A total of 31,725 criminal cases involving juveniles were reported last year in comparison to 27,936 cases reported in 2012 -- an increase of 13.6 per cent. Last year, the highest number of juveniles were apprehended for thefts (7,969) followed by hurt (6,043) and burglaries (3,784). These heads taken together accounted for 40.9 per cent of total juveniles apprehended under IPC crimes. Out of the total juveniles (43,506) involved in various crimes, 8,392 were illiterate and 13,984 had education up to primary level. These two categories together accounted for 51.9 per cent of the total juve-

niles arrested during the year 2013. A large number of juveniles (50.2 per cent) belonged to poor families whose annual income was up to Rs 25,000. Children living with parents (35,244 persons) have accounted for 81.0 per cent of the total juveniles apprehended for committing various crimes during 2013. Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi had favoured treating juveniles accused of heinous crimes like rape on par with adult offenders. She said 50 per cent of all sexual crimes were committed by "16-year-olds who know the Juvenile Justice Act so they can do it. But now for premeditated murder, rape, if we bring them into the purview of the adult world, then it will scare them," she had said. Former WCD Minister Krishna Tirath had proposed that juveniles above 16 years guilty of heinous crimes be treated on par with adult offenders. The move was however opposed by various NGOs and National Commission of Protection of Child Rights which stated that such a proposal was against child rights. However, on August 12, a comprehensive bill to tackle increasing crimes committed by youngsters between 16-18 years of age was introduced in the Lok Sabha.

Amidst Crackdown On MNCs, China Loses FDI

Amid a crackdown on a host of MNCs over alleged violations of the antimonopoly laws, foreign investments into China slumped in July by 16.95 % from a year earlier to USD 7.81 billion, the government said yesterday. The sharp decline, resulting in a two-year low figures, was in contrast with a minor 0.2-% increase seen in June, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said. Constant reforms helped China remain the biggest recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the last three decades due to liberal investment environment despite being a Communist nation. For the first seven months, the FDI, which excludes investment in the financial sector, stood at USD 71.14 billion down 0.35 % from the same period last year.

he BSE has decided to revise the transaction charges for trading on the equity segment, beginning September this year. Under the revised charges, the bourse will levy a uniform transaction fee of Rs 275 per crore of the gross turnover for both active as well as passive orders on the equity segment. "With effect from September 1, 2014, the exchange shall levy a uniform transaction charge for both active and passive sides of the transaction in equity segment," BSE said in a notification. So far, the transaction charges stood at Rs 2.25 for every Rs 1 lakh of gross turnover for passive orders. The same has been Rs 3.25 for every Rs 1 lakh of the gross turnover for active orders. Besides, BSE has revised the charges "for transactions in securities traded and settled in physical mode in equity segment". For trading in the physical mode, members of BSE would have to shell out Rs 1 lakh for every one crore of gross turnover for both active and passive sides of the transaction. Last week, BSE had had said that it would begin levying a fee for trading in the currency derivative segment from December this year. The proposed transaction charges of the BSE - which would be Rs 2 per crore of turnover initially and would eventually rise to Rs 10 per crore by October 2015 - would still be only a small fraction of the charges levied by its rivals NSE and MCX Stock Exchange for currency derivatives.

Changes In New Companies Act Significant, But Not Enough While latest amendment does not do away with all the practical challenges that corporates are facing, it is still a major step in the right direction, says consultancy firm KPMG By A Business Reporter

T

he latest amendments to related party transaction norms are "significant" and would help reduce practical difficulties faced by companies, according to consultancy KPMG. With the changes effected by the Corporate Affairs Ministry, only certain class of related party transactions whose value is over Rs 100 crore would require shareholders' prior approval by way of a special resolution. Sai Venkateshwaran, Partner and Head of Accounting Advisory Services, KPMG in India, said some significant changes have been made in the context of related party transactions. "These changes are welcome, since the shareholders' approval requirements will now apply only to transactions meeting certain transaction thresholds... "While this amendment does not do away with all the practical challenges that corporates are facing, it is still a major step in the right direction," he said in a statement. Earlier, companies having paidup share capital of Rs 10 crore were required to get prior shareholders' approval through special

resolution for all related party transactions that were not in the ordinary course of business and on an arm's length basis. "Through the amendment, the over-arching limit of Rs 10 crore paid-up share capital has been dispensed with, and instead (the Ministry) introduced transaction limits for all companies," Venkateshwaran said. Special resolutions require at least 75 % shareholders' nod to get passed. The Ministry, which is implementing the new Companies Act, has brought the changes through Companies (Meetings of Board and its Powers) Second Amendment Rules, 2014. Dolphy Dsouza, Partner in a member firm of Ernst & Young Global, said the rules for related party transactions have been eased with respect to determining the materiality threshold for minority shareholders' approval. "This is a step in the right direction... That is not enough and more changes would be required," he said in a separate statement. The most important change would be to align Sebi and Companies Act requirement with respect to definition of related party and related party transactions as well as the requirements relating to the approval process, he added. Besides, the Ministry has reduced the transaction specific thresholds, defined as a percentage of turnover or net-worth, from the previous levels. However, Venkateshwaran noted that introduction of the absolute monetary thresholds still would require several transactions -- that are not considered to be material for a large company -- to be referred to

shareholders for approval. There are strict norms for related party transactions under Section 188 of Companies Act, 2013.

TI Mutual Fund may revive its initial public offer (IPO) plan after Finance Ministry's nod which is expected soon. "There is proposal for IPO of UTI Mutual Fund and the Finance Ministry is looking at it. The Ministry after consideration can give in-principle approval for public offer," reports PTI quoting sources. The Government has stake in the UTI Mutual Fund through public sector banks and insurance companies. State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda and LIC holding stake in UTI Mutual Fund on behalf of government of India. State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda and LIC jointly owns 74 % stake in the fund house while remaining 26 % stake is with the USbased investment firm T Rowe Price. In 2008, UTI Asset Management Company deferred its IPO owning to uncertain market conditions. The fund house had proposed to sell 4.8 crore equity shares through IPO. Subsequently in 2009 all the four sponsors of UTI diluted 6.5 % each in favour of T Rowe Price "The IPO would not be a revenue raising measure but it is governance measure," sources said, adding, IPO will make UTI AMC as market based mutual fund. Listing of UTI AMC would strengthen corporate governance of the mutual fund and this development would result in other asset management company to go for listing, sources added. The stake sale would also help in meeting minimum 25 % public float norm.

T

he annual Pt Krishnarao Pandit memorial festival hosted by Khayal Trust in collaboration with Kalabharati is an event to look forward to. Music lovers and connoisseurs eagerly await the announcement of this festival because of the quality of music that is presented here. This year’s festival was sponsored by LIC, Bank of Baroda and ICICI Lombard. A lot of thinking and research goes into the selection of the artists who perform here. They are exceptionally talented and need exposure in a city like Mumbai. Many of them make their debut through this platform. Each and every artist who performed this year did

intriguing. Her ability to formulate fast patterns on the spur of the moment and deliver them with accuracy and precision was indeed worthy of praise. With Supriya Joshi on the harmonium and Mukta Raste on the tabla, the allladies cast offered audio visual delight to the audience. Sunilkant Gupta who played the ragas ‘Megh’ and ‘Surdasi Malhar’ was in excellent form. His bansuri playing was close to the gayaki style. Long oscillations decorated the pieces and Gupta established instant rapport with his tabla player Hindole Majumdar who was exceptionally brilliant. Narendra Mishra, an unso creditably and earned a of the prestigious Sawai Gand- Paluskarite tradition. IN BRIEF

Brilliant performance

By Vijay Shanker

A

s part of the horizon series, Indian Council of Cultural Relations presented a Bharatanatyam recital by Suhani Dhanki at Rangeshwar Hall of Y B Chavan Centre. The performance was noteworthy for its technical quality of precise movements and fine command over expressional dancing. Suhani Dhanki is an ardent disciple of renowned exponent Dr Sandhya Purecha. She commenced the performance with Nataraja Kautvam, followed by the traditional padam ‘Kalai Thuki’ that vividly describes the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva in Chidambaram, wherein the Lord is accompanied by Lord Brahma on Talam, Narada sings and Nandi plays the mridangam and all the celestial beings rejoice while the Lord dances on one foot, keeping everybody spellbound.

This number was performed with fine control over movements, inclusive of the varied ‘karanas’ that was striking, creating a fine visual appeal. The Trividha Pushpanjali comprised the Dhanike Varnam and the Adi Shankaracharya shlokam ‘Namah Shivaya’ that encompasses the entire magnificence and grandeur of Lord Shiva. The Varnam in praise of Lord Shiva exposed varied episodes like the devotee Markandeya is attacked by Yama and how Lord Shiva protects him, the destruction of the ‘yagna’ and other instances which were performed with fine dramatic

quality. Suhani is a charming danseuse, which was further evident in the Marathi composition ‘Aaji Sonyacha Divas’ wherein the devotee gets a glimpse and considers the day as a golden day. This number is part of the research work carried out on Marathi compositions by Guru Sandhya Purecha with the guidance from Acharya Parvati Kumar.

Son in law of the late Kishen Maharaj, he claims to be a pupil of the sitar legend – late Vilayat Khan. He played raga ‘Gujri Todi’ with real mastery. He was extraordinary in his alaps and jod portions. Arvindkumar Azad on the tabla was as great. Madhup Mudgal is a singer with a serious approach to music making. He sang the ragas ‘Ahir Bhairav’, ‘Desi’ and ‘Alhaiya Bilawal’. The stamp of Kumar Gandharva’s aesthetics was visible. Mudgal sang a Bhairavi tappa in an emotion laden voice. Mandar Puranik on the tabla and Niranjan Lele on the harmonium lent superb sangat to the singer. Ananya Gaur and Jayant Naidu on the tanpura lent steady support. Kavita Shanbhag compered the festival with distinction.

Leslie Lewis’s new album

THE legendary Leslie Lewis set the stage afire with his spell-binding performance at the Indian International Model United Nation (IIMUN). The students and the dignitaries present including Imran Khan, Abbas Tyrewala, Shashi Tharoor, Kabir Bedi, Ronit Roy, Cyrus Broacha, Rahul Bose and Ronnie Screwwala enjoyed every moment of it besides participating in the IIMUN. Imran Khan and Abbas Tyrewala, along with the students, also launched Lesle Lewis’s album for the Indian farmer, 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan'. Said Leslie Lewis, “This is the best platform to launch my ode to the Indian farmer.

Distribution of Marathi cinema to be revamped By A Staff Reporter

P

ickle Entertainment, a leading distribution house, is all set to redefine the distribution and promotion rules of the Marathi cinema industry. The distribution and promotion model of Marathi cinema is being revamped in a big way. Thankfully things are moving in the positive direction due to Pickle Entertainment and their partnering with top cinema portal – Glamsham.com. Marathi cinema is all set to cut down the risk factors of the producers and introduce the MG (mini-

mum guarantee) concept. Sameer Dixit, director of Pickle Entertainment, said, “The risks involved with making a Marathi film were to be borne solely by the producer. Once the distributor bought the film, everything depended upon the box-office performance. What we intend to do is that we will give MG to the films we procure. Like if the producer has incurred an expenditure of Rs 1.5 crore, we offer an MG of just Rs 25 lakh, we will still be cutting down his risk factor. If more profits accrue, I can say, its good for the producer and distributor.”

FORMER PLAYERS WANT FLETCHER OUT,

QUESTION DHONI’S CAPTAINCY N 30

SPORTS

EW DELHI: India’s beleaguered cricketers have come under sharp criticism from former players who called for coach Duncan Fletcher’s immediate ouster while questioning Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s captaincy in the Test series against England that culminated with an innings and 244 runs annihilation at the Oval. The players were critical of Fletcher’s role in the embarassing defeat, saying his contribution was “zero” and it was high time that he be replaced. “What was Fletcher doing after we won the Lord’s Test on a difficult pitch? This is where he lacked imagination in keeping the lead. Yes, I think Fletcher has to go,” said former captain Ajit Wadekar.

Ajit Wadekar India’s woeful performances touched a new low as they succumbed to their heaviest Test defeat in 40 years in a match that got over well inside three days, gifting away the series to England 3-1. Regarding Dhoni, Wadekar

said, “He changed his technique and batted well. But why he did not change his tactics as captain foxes me. For example not keeping a third man where half the runs were scored. Also in team selection, (Ravichandran) Ashwin should have played from the first Test. Wonder why he did not.”

Krish Srikkanth Former middle-order batsman Chandu Borde, who led India in one Test, criticised the technique of the current lot. “I am surprised these youngsters did not change their technique which a player like Gundappa Viswanath (Alastair) Cook did after England’s defeat at Lord’s by standing Former batting great Gun- a few feet outside the crease to dappa Viswanath felt Dhoni often counter Bhuvaneshwar Kumar’s hopes for a miracle to bail his swing bowling. team out of difficult situations. “What can a player do if you “I’m not happy with his keeping and captaincy, he’s got his own mind. He always keeps repeating that. He always expects a miracle. Miracles cannot happen all the time. It happens once in a blue moon,” Viswanath told PTI. Ex-spinner Erapalli Prasanna said, “I am categorically saying that Fletcher’s contribution to the team was a big zero.” Another former captain Kris Srikkanth too felt the same about the under-fire coach. “Fletcher has not contributed Erapalli Prasanna anything for the team.”

Federer, Serena Williams win titles at Cincinnati

M

ASON (Ohio): Roger Federer won an unprecedented sixth championship in Cincinnati, overcoming one bad set.Serena Williams dominated for her first title.Federer extended his record of finals perfection in Cincinnati, beating David Ferrer 6-3 1-6 6-2 in the Western & Southern Open yesterday. He’s won all six times he’s reached the tournament’s title match. The latest came against an opponent he has dominated throughout his career. Federer improved to 16-0 against Ferrer, who has won only five sets off him overall. It ended a bit of a slump for Federer, who finally got the large winner’s trophy after losing his last four Masters title matches. He was the runner-up to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Toronto a week earlier. “I’ve been bringing home some smaller ones,” Federer said. “I’m happy to get the big one.” Earlier yesterday, Williams finally got the one that had always slipped away. And she did it so convincingly that she came away thinking another title could be coming soon. Williams needed only 62 min-

She’d never even reached the finals in Cincinnati until last year, when she fell apart and lost to Victoria Azarenka on a third-set tiebreaker. No wobbles this time. don’t implement what is told to you. He cannot bat for you. Their confidence got low as the series progressed, bogged down by failures.” Former player Anshuman Gaekwad too, was critical of Fletcher. “I’ve been a coach in the past and a coach must look into this and rectify. I don’t know what’s wrong. If the coach is telling them it’s not working, then probably the boys are not listening. If that is the case, then what’s the point of having a coach there? “You can take a horse to the water but cannot make him drink. Ultimately the players have to perform. I agree he has to be blamed but batsmen are to be blamed equally for the series,” Gaekwad said. Ashok Malhotra felt Dhini’s shelf life as Test captain has expired. “He’s wonderful in shorter formats of ODI and T20s but there’s a lot to be desired as far as Tests are concerned. He doesn’t have a Plan A, B or C in place. He’s very close minded as far as Test cricket is concerned. Ganguly definitely was much better, he enjoyed Test captaincy, he took pride in his performance.” Malhotra said Fletcher had enough as coach of the Indian team. “I don’t think he’s good as a coach whatever the Indian player might say. He does not say anything, he does not speak to the media. The records speak for himself. We should have looked beyond him after we lost eight consecutive matches overseas to England and Australia.

ONDON: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today gave an open-ended reply to a query if he is ready to quit captaincy after another Test debacle on foreign soil having lost the current series 1-3 to England, here today. To a question that if he is contemplating resignation, Dhoni replied,”You will have to wait and watch to find out whether I am strong enough to cope with this loss or not. But has he done enough as India’s Test captain, Dhoni gave a curt one-line reply, “May be, yes.” After his batsmen failed in five consecutive innings, he did not mince words while assessing the poor show in the last three Test matches. “It’s a reflection of the batting order that has not done well,” said Dhoni after the match had ended in less than three days. “Murali Vijay has done well but right from the first Test we have not been able to get a good opening partnership. Cheteshwar Pujara was early to the middle because of that in the 3rd or 4th

over itself in every innings. It kept exposing our number three batsman and Virat Kohli went through a lean patch,” Dhoni said. The skipper said that once a team plays with six batsmen, it’s difficult to lose too many wickets upfront. “If you are playing with six batsmen, including the keeper it makes it a bit tough if you lose that many wickets upfront. When the lower order scored runs we made 300-plus totals and once they too got out cheaply then we struggled to put runs on the board,“ he said. Dhoni didn’t make any bones about the fact that lack of resistance was very disappointing. “Yes, we are disappointed that we couldn’t offer any fight in the last three Test matches. Hopefully, the batsmen will take positive out of this defeat when they come back here, all of them are young and good enough to come back here, and do better” he added, hoping for better times for the Indian batting line-up. However it puts a question mark on Dhoni who, despite being the side’s best batsman at both Manchester and the Oval, will come under scrutiny for his captaincy.

India have been consistently under pressure from James Anderson and Stuart Broad throughout the series, and it didn’t help that they lost wickets regularly to their second line of attack in Chris Jordan, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali as well. “We have to give credit to the five bowlers for the way they’ve bowled because with sustained periods of pressure, we haven’t let them get away from us. India will have a tough time during Australia tour: McGrath EW DELHI: Australian N pace legend Glenn McGrath feels that India will have a tough time during its upcoming tour of Australia at the end of this year after their disastrous show in England. “I think Indians are going to have a very tough time in Australia. Last time, when the two teams met, it was in India and we lost 0-4. But we have come a long way since then,” McGrath said in the course of a talk with a TV channel. McGrath feels that this same England team were thrashed 5-0 by the Aussies during the last Ashes, so one could gauge what exactly would be in store for India. “Australia has also defeated this same England squad 5-0 last year in the Ashes. So now you can well understand that how much tough it can be for India playing over there,” he opined.

Wife convinced me not to give up captaincy: Cook L

ONDON: Relishing a dramatic turnaround of fortunes in the series against India, England captain Alastair Cook has said it was his wife who convinced him not to give up captaincy when his team was on a losing streak. “Without my wife, I don’t think I’d be standing here as captain. You don’t often say things like that — I don’t know why I just have — but it’s the way I feel,” an emotional Cook told BBC Test Match Special after his side steamrolled India in the fifth and final Test to clinch the series 3-1. Cook said it was his wife Alice who convinced him to remain as captain and lead England to victory over India. The England captain

admitted that he considered his position after losing to Sri Lanka at Headingley and then to India at Lord’s as England went 1-0 down in the series. “You can bare your soul quite often to Alice and she’s very good at getting me back on the straight and narrow. That fourth night at Headingley was a tough place because we had let a winning position slip. Lord’s was also very tough — the way we lost there in conditions that were suited to us,” Cook said. “But I’m quite stubborn — I believe in my ability. I stuck in there through the tough times. Sport tests your character and to bounce back as a team is testament to our character,” he said.
