LIMITED CHOICE OF JUNIOR COLLEGES ATTACHED TO SCHOOLS IN THE ARTS STREAM POSES A HEADACHE FOR STUDENTS TRYING TO FULFIL ABSURD BOARD NORMS FOR ONLINE ADMISSION PROCESS

By Yatin Ingle

W

ith the state SSC results being declared today, parents and students who have been studying the online admission form for the First Year Junior College (FYJC) in the Arts stream already realise they are in for a hard time. The online admission process has been complicated enough by making it compulsory to pick no less than 35 preferred colleges for admission! This has led to another problem. In many wards there are very few junior colleges attached to schools. And there lies the rub. The 35 preferences must include 15 from wards in one’s own zone (north, south, east and west), another 15 colleges from anywhere in

the city and suburbs, and five junior colleges attached to schools in one’s own ‘ward’ and the adjacent one, the area of which is itself decided by the Board. Most wards do not have adequate number of junior colleges attached to schools in the Arts stream. Yet, if you do not fill in the required number, your application is automatically not accepted, making it impossible to complete the admission filing process. For example, the West zone, comprising Bandra to Dahisar, has seven junior colleges attached to schools offering the Arts stream. Among the seven, only the Malad ward has two such colleges. The rest of the wards have only one each. Students would like to know how they can list five colleges when

they are further restricted by the “only two wards” rule. According to the rules of the FYJC online form filling process, a list of around 300 colleges has been given by the state Board to the applicants for Arts, Commerce and Science. For Commerce and Science, there seems to be no problem. Speaking to the ADC, Subhash Gadhari, SSC board officer, Zone-3, said “As the Arts stream has less junior colleges attached to schools in certain wards, the students can list five colleges around their locality. They should not panic and their forms will not be disqualified”. Check SSC results at 1 pm on http://mahresult.nic.in www.msbshse.ac.in www.sscresult.mkcl.org

MINISTERS DIVERTED DROUGHT FUNDS TO OWN

CONSTITUENCIES? L

By Prashant Hamine

eader of opposition in legislative council, Vinod Tawde, yesterday alleged that the Congress-NCP ministers from western Maharashtra diverted funds meant for drought relief to their own constituencies. Speaking to newspersons here, he disclosed that while Rs.381 crores were allocated to western Maharashtra districts like Pune, Sangli and Satara, there were hardly any funds allocated to the worst drought-affected districts of Aurangabad and Jalna in Marathwada region. Giving details, he said that the state government spent the funds allocated by the centre only on cattle camps and water tankers. Continued on pg 6 «

with the Drug Prices Control Order (DPCO) coming up, there will be a reduction in the prices of drugs and this will create a drop in the wholesalers’ profit margins. This could be a possible reason. Also, the FDA took strong actions against a ‘rule’ to obtain a ‘No Objection’ certificate in order to appoint new stockists and procure medicines from manufacturers and also undue interference in issues of deciding discounts for the consumers. This was illegal and the involved association was fined Rs 47 lakh by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for this malpractice. So maybe they are trying to disrupt the drug

he Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has sent a letter asking wholesalers to refrain from suspending orders for medicines with manufacturers, as it will adversely affect the common man in the long run. The letter came after the FDA received inputs from their intelligence about wholesalers not placing orders for medicines with manufacturers since June 1. “Through our sources we found out that several wholesalers have stopped placing orders for fresh stock of medicines. This can adversely affect the medicine supply as it is these wholesalers who supply medicines to the retailers who in supply them to the public. Now if the wholesaler doesn’t supply the retailer where will the people

get medicines from once the retailer runs out of the current stock? This will impact healthcare of the city,” said K.B. Shende, Joint Commissioner, FDA, Mumbai. While the reasons for this rebellion are unclear to FDA officials, they say that the enforcement of the new Drug Prices Control Order and FDA’s stern stand on implementation of rules may have lead to this response from wholesalers. “Nothing has come to us officially but we feel that

supply chain by not placing orders at all,” said S.R. Salunkhe, assistant commissioner, FDA. To avoid a situation where Mumbai will face shortage of medicines, the FDA has written a letter to the wholesalers asking them to resume placing orders with the medicine manufacturers. “If the wholesalers continue doing what they are doing right now, action will be taken against them under several laws like the DPCO, the Essential Commodities Act and Prevention of Black Marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act. Their licences can be suspended. They can face also imprisonment,” said Shende. Shende also informed about FDA’s plan to make sure that while this issue is being sorted out, the supply of medicines in the city doesn’t get affected. “We have asked retailers and hospitals to get medicines directly from the manufacturers or the C and F agents (Carry and Forward agents are appointed by the company to send out

goods, in this case medicines, as per orders placed). We have also asked new pharmacists to apply for licences to procure medicines directly from the manufacturers or their C and F agents,” said Shende. “And if the manufacturer or the C and F agents do not co-operate, action will be taken against them as well,” he added. There are 3,926 wholesalers in the city of which thirty percent are purely into wholesaling. Recently, inspections by the FDA revealed that thirty to forty wholesalers aren’t placing orders with the manufacturers. “We have started gathering information very recently and will soon find out which other wholesalers are indulging in such activities,” said Shende.

"As many as 60-70 employees are currently on an indefinite hunger strike at the Kingfisher House near the domestic airport," a

source told PTI late this evening. The airline spokesperson could not be reached for comment. Airlines' CEO Sanjay Agarwal was also at the airlines headquarters, trying to persuade the employees to end the agitation, sources said. The airline, which has not paid its employees since last August, has been grounded since October. Since December it has lost its flying li-

cence too. Though chairman Vijay Mallya has been promising relaunch since February, nothing has happened so far. The 17 lenders to the airline, which owes them nearly Rs.7,500 in principal, excluding arrears since January 2012, have sold sureties and shares of the airline as well as group companies worth around Rs.1,000 crore so far as part of their recovery process.

Do the results of by-poll elections signal the beginning of the end for UPA-II?

Vikas Kumar Consultant at Cognizant

The common man is fed up with the rising inflation and a number of scams during the UPA government. Now they want change.

Ganesh Demse Student

It is the beginning of UPA-II’s downfall and is a signal that politicos like Mamata Banerjee, Narendra Modi and Nitish Kumar should not be taken lightly.

Pranav Pandey Fashion Designer

The UPA-II has crossed all limits of committing scams and now it’s time that the common man taught them a lesson.

Sadanand Parkar Student

I don’t how some regional parties have been supporting the government. They should immediately pull out from the government.

Corporator’s relative kills self By Tariq Khan

K

iran Sanil (34), brother-in-law of NCP corporator Rakhi Jadhav from the Ghatkopar constituency, committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence on Wednesday afternoon. Although Kiran did not leave a suicide note behind, he had saved messages in the draft folder of his mobile phone indicating that he was frustrated over repeated failures in life. The Pant Nagar police have registered a case of accidental death. Kiran is the brother of Satish, who happens to be the husband of Rakhi Jadhav, and was alone at his home near Ambedkar Circle in Ghatkopar East, when he took his own life. His cousin brother, Kumar, visited at around 3.30 pm and found the house locked from the inside. “Kumar rang the doorbell and knocked on the door several times but did not re-

ceive any response. He then borrowed the keys from a neighbour and entered the house to find Kiran hanging from the hook of the ceiling fan. We checked his mobile phone where he had saved messages in the draft folder, indicating that he could not take the failures in his career any more. ‘Main zindagi mein haar gaya hoon (I have lost in life),’ he wrote in one of them,” said API S. Yadav of the Pant Nagar police station. Kiran’s body was taken to Rajawadi Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The police have not recorded the family members’ statements as they are yet to recover from the shock. “We have ruled out foul play as it seems a clear case of ending one’s life due to depression. He had however deleted his call logs and other messages so it is difficult to find out which other persons he had spoken to before taking the extreme step,” said an officer.

Thane Additional Sessions Judge A P Raghuvanshi set all the accused free yesterday after holding that the prosecution had miserably failed to prove them guilty. The case relates to an incident where a mutton shop owner Abdul Rehman Maniar and his family were attacked with lethal weapons by a

group of villagers in Khodala of Mokhada taluka five years ago. According to prosecution, this was a fall out of an incident when brother of Rehman Maniar had gone to the house of one of the accused to ask for a CD which he had given to them. But as the concerned person was not available at home he left after giving a message to his mother. This created a confusion among the two as a result of which the accused returned in the evening and picked up a quarrel with Maniar's father in the mutton shop, the court was told. In the midst of the quarrel,

the accused picked up a chopper knife and attacked the inmates including Maniar, his father and mother, the prosecution said. The defence counsel Ramrao Jagtap in his argument dismissed the prosecution's version and said that the theory of a murderous attack is totally in contradiction of the medical report which states that the injury was due to an assault by hard and blunt object. Moreover, the chemical analysis report of the blood stained cloths were not produced and parents of the complainant have not been examined.

proper account of the Rs.1,022 crore funds spent for drought relief in its funds utilization certificate to the centre, the latter did not release the second installment of Rs.2,600 crore. Tawde said that if the gov-

hit region list, it was allocated Rs 16 crore as a special government resolution was issued. Tawde demanded that the government continue requisition of wells till August as the rains will not raise the well water levels till then.

Ponder awhile…

“Show me a young Conservative and I’ll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old Liberal and I’ll show you someone with no brains.” — Winston Churchill

Modi likely to head 2014 poll campaign he clean sweep by the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Gujarat polls T has given – in Narendra Modi’s words – “an ultimatum to the UPA government.” All the six seats which were held by the Congress have been won by the BJP. The election was for four assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats. Narendra Modi has already held meetings with BJP President Rajnath Singh who is an ardent supporter and he has also met BJP’s top leader L.K. Advani who is known not to be very keen about his elevation in the party. Advani appears to have been quietly hoping all the time to be named as the choice for the PM. There is another development which strengthens the chance of Modi to be the party’s choice: Nitish Kumar, the ‘secular’ chief minister of Bihar has received a big set-back following his party losing by a large margin in a by poll. Nitish Kumar is known to be a bitter opponent of Modi and has always expressed himself against the ‘communal Gujarat CM’ even becoming an NDA prime ministerial candidate. All the recent developments are likely to work out to the advantage of Modi. At the executive meeting of the BJP tomorrow in Goa, it is most likely that Narendra Modi will be selected as the head of the poll campaign committee for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. It is becoming increasingly clear that he is getting support from top leaders of the party: L.K. Advani has no go but to accept Modi as the final choice for prime ministerial candidate.

oor UPA. It has no friends even in the media. It is being damned by one and all. The Times of India (May 23) said “so feeble is the UPA government’s credibility that the fourth annual report it unveiled to highlight its achievements in office will be seen as little more than a self-serving exercise.” It can, said the paper, at least provide talking points to Congress cadres… but even that collateral benefit could wither away if the party gets a drubbing in the polls to be held in four states… Suggesting what the party should do to retrieve lost ground, the paper said “this is obviously a mountain of grim challenges, prospects of scaling which don’t look bright at the moment. Deccan Herald (May 23) said “as the Congress-led UPA enters its tenth straight year in office, its stock with the people of this country couldn’t have been lower.” The paper said “disgust with its corruption-ridden and inept governance, especially over the last five years is intense and widespread.” The UPA said the paper, “has been pre-occupied with misusing public funds and hanging on to power… reluctant to act against the corrupt.” Damning the government for its “sheer brazenness” the paper said the Prime Minister’s promise to punish the wrongdoers… sounds completely hollow when he himself presided over he coal scam “of mammoth proportions”. Additionally it said “it is its thick hide that has made it insensitive to public sentiment.” The Economic Times (May 23) said “a series of scams relative to UPA-1 have haunted UPA-2 almost to paralyse for much of its term.” It also said “lack of internal cohesion within the government has not helped” and “the UPA has no one to blame but itself for its failure to initiate the most vital reforms India needs: to make political funding and expenditure transparent and accountable… and for its failure to communicate whatever it has achieved.”

According to the paper “the UPA’s performance on the foreign policy front is a mixed bag (and) New Delhi’s handling of Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Maldives could have been better.” Further, it said, sounding frustrated, “there are many things that the UPA could have done differently to avert criticism it is receiving…” Perhaps, it added, the UPA has not lived up to the expectations of many, but it may just redeem itself to some extent in the remaining time of its tenure.” DNA (May 23) felt that the UPA’s nine-year rule presented “a complex picture,” the last four being “murky and vicious”. Writing in The Asian Age (May 23) Bharat Karnad, professor at the Centre for Policy Research, damned India for its soft policy towards China, claiming that if China “retracted its claws… it was not because of India’s nuanced diplomacy” but because China was afraid of a “militarised Japan” with which India was engaged in a military exercise.” Karnad wants India to “strategically stretch China with a powerful India-Japan pincer.” Strangely enough, hardly any paper featured Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s remarks made in Islamabad on May 22 in which he said his visit to Pakistan is “to give a clear and loud message to the international community that whatever happens at the international scene, our relations with Pakistan will continue to flourish and further strengthen.” Keqiang further said that his visit to Islamabad was “aimed at consolidating the time-tested friendship with Pakistan and show the world that China intends to continue this partnership” – and there could not have been a more clear warning to India, which Delhi has preferred to ignore. Then the question arises: how should one judge the Chinese premier’s visit to India? There are sharp differences of opinion among experts. B.S. Raghavan, surely an expert in international affairs, writing in Business Line (May 27) noted that “the recent visit of Chinese M.V. MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 2013

Why is the media so obsessed with NaMo? THIS refers to the report under Diary—‘Can’t ignore NaMo’ (ADC, June 6). At a time when the person concerned himself has launched his self-promotion campaign like nobody had done before in India’s long political history, it is nauseating that there is an overdose of the Gujarat strongman in the media these days. With due regard to his hat-trick performance in the main assembly polls in his state, it needs to be pointed out that quite a few other chief ministers had achieved this long back, particularly, Dr. Bidhon Chandra Roy, the former CM of West Bengal, who was a highly respected leader for 18 years until he passed away in 1962. The results of the four assembly by-polls and two Lok Sabha polls in Gandhiji’s state have all gone to the Lotus party since no other party has a pres-

AS reported it is indeed very shocking and disturbing to note the tirade and behaviour of L.K. Advani against Modi. This was not expected at all from a very matured, experienced and capable leader. Advani fails to realise the damage it will cause to BJP which was supposed to be a good alternative to Congress party. This indicates infighting among BJP even much before elections or rather winning. It will send a very wrong signal to electorates. How will the BJP rule the country afterwards when infighting has started much before. BJP should have the wisdom and maturity and create confidence instead of diffidence structed by Omkar Realtors in an enormous slum rehabilitation project. As per sources Yuvraj’s mother Shabnam is negotiating with the

POLITICAL parties, including the Congress are reported to be totally averse to the CIC order bringing them under the RTI Act for the trivial reason that they cannot afford transparency in their affairs. The prevarication on their part in this regard shall be perceived by the public as a sign of profanity and incredulous nature. It is reported that the political parties are favoured with govt. funds, the bulk of which should be the precious tax-payer’s money and hence the public has every right to get all the important details regarding the receipts vis-avis expenditures and how the money is spent and the reasons necessitating expenditures. Marine life in grave danger IT is most disturbing news in the media that the city’s marine life is in danger due to delay in setting up sewage treatment plant. Sea water pollution has increased with the growth of industry as well as population. The disposal of untreated sewage from industrial, commercial and household sources has become a major source for concern. Due to the population growth in Mumbai, sewage generated at over 2,600 million litres a day which sullies the sea water thus harming marine life. About 45 per cent of untreated human waste is flushed in to the two creeks and the Arabian Sea. Treatment plants should be upgraded so that the sewage is treated before it goes into the sea and ocean and thus save the city’s marine life. — Probir Kumar Bose, New Panvel

Media’s cunning ploy SOME time back we had the media sponsoring switching off the lights for an hour. Recently some other section wanted to switch off TVs for one day. All this is just hype to keep that section of the media in the news. Want some real power saving ideas? One of the biggest wasters of power is the fact that many TVs are on even if no one is watching. TV has become another person in the house. TV channels will be available only for 8 hours a day – 6 am to 8 am, 12 pm to 2 pm and 7 pm to 11 pm. If channels want to broadcast at other times then they have to pay a hefty power surcharge. — T.R. Ramaswami, Kandivli

Cong suppresses Telangana THE Congress is trying to placate the simmering anger amongst its

AFTER by-poll sweeps in Gujarat, BJP has issued a sound warning to Congress and in the process paves way for Narendra Modi to take charge as prime ministerial candidate of NDA. It is now official that Modi is to head the campaign for General Election 2014 with an authority to succeed if everything is going fine for the Gujarat Chief Minister. Defeated Congress party could not hide their disappointment and put the blame on Modi for his demand for POTA and TADA in the Chief Ministers’ meet. Chief Ministers J. Jayalalithaa and Mamata Banerjee did not attend a meeting of Chief Ministers in the Capital, where the government is expected to attempt another hard sell of antiterror body, the National Counter Terrorism Centre, to the states, many of which have been oplegislators who are bent upon carving out a state of Telangana from the present day Andhra Pradesh. The Congressmen are past masters in postponing indefinitely an issue which threatens to eat into its vote bank. This has been evident right from 1956 when the demand for a separate state of Vidarbha and merger of the Marathi-speaking areas of Karnataka with Maharashtra has been kept unresolved. The thinking in the Congrass appears to be that, any sensitive issue, if allowed to putrefy for an indefinite period of time, dies its natural death; Telangana being no exception to this rule — Arun Malankar, Santa Cruz

THE BJP leadership is making a laughing stock of itself before the 900 million-strong electorate. When the general elections are still 11 months away, with no sign of any wave blowing in its favour, they have started hectic discussions on their PM nominee. This has led to fissures within the top echelons of the Party. Die-hard supporters of the Hindutva party would now be doing a serious rethink over their choice. They must be wondering as to what would happen if the NDA is voted to power; whether it would survive as a coherent group or mid-term polls would become inevitable! — Jorhat Singh, Kandivli

order to support their families. We see nowadays the education is essential, but it has become luxurious. In coming days the education would be the right of higher income group. In many govt. ads and even on private ads e.g. thru KBC, show that only knowledge gives you your right. But knowledge and education are not free, they get distributed in unaffordable schools and tuition classes with highly paid teachers and professors. Our govt. is not interested in promoting the BMC Schools to counter these hi-fi schools. There should be a rule that only those who have been educated in municipal schools can become ministers. — Bhavesh Jani, Nala Sopara

Jiah Khan’s suicide sad indeed! APROPOS ‘Jiah hangs self’ (ADC, June 5), it is indeed sad to learn that this young Bollywood star committed suicide out of depression in view of continued failing of getting any chance to act in the films. In her 2007 debut film with Big B in ‘Nishabd’ we witnessed her acting calibre which was appreciated by the audiences. Thereafter in ‘Housefull’ she did well too. Maybe Jiah lacked something which acted as a serious deterrent in her career but that should not have caused so much of frustration, which had driven her up the wall to bring her end so tragically. It may be her love affair with Panscholi which might have soured over the time and thereby it forced her to take her life. May her soul rest in peace. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

SUNNY SIDE UP!

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 2013

From roadside stalls serving up masala omelettes, to fine dining restaurants serving them poached, the humble egg has a ubiquitous presence in the city, and not without reason. We are sure that you love eggs, just like we do and so, we bring you some of the best egg dishes in the city and a few fun facts

W

e believe that the egg is one of the most underrated foods in the city. It has been a saviour when hunger pangs strike at 3am and it has been there every morning near your cup of coffee, awakening you from your slumber. Though, most of us associate the food with breakfast, eggs can be eaten at any time of the day and can be cooked in more ways than you can imagine (see box on next page). In this article, we pay homage to the humble egg. And along with a few other egg lovers from the city, we bring you some of the best egg dishes that you can find in Mumbai. It doesn’t matter if you’re a egg fanatic or not; these dishes are not just excellent egg dishes, they are also great culinary experiences.

ScrumptiouS — Scrambled eggS Ankit Arora, a resident of 7 Bungalows, Andheri, tells us that the best egg dish he’s had in the city is at a small restaurant café called Scrumptious, located in Versova. He says, “When I think of eggs, the first place that comes to mind is Scrumptious. They have a large variety of eggs but I love their all-daybreakfast. It costs `200 and includes an egg preparation, mashed potatoes, sautéed mushrooms, buttered toast and two chicken sausages. I like their scrambled eggs the most. The dish is utterly creamy; the scrambled eggs melt in your mouth and the cheese and tomato just make the dish a whole lot better.” The 48hrs team (that’s us!), completely agree with Ankit’s assessment; we would also like to add that their Eggs Florentine Omelette (creamed spinach and cheese; `100) is worth a try too. Also, while you’re there, don’t miss out on their refreshing and complete value for money, Lemon Iced Tea (`60). price `110 (only scrambled eggs) Where Shop No. 9 & 10, Everest Apartment, Versova, JP Road, Andheri (W)

moShe’S — ShakShouka Middle Eastern egg preparations are delicious and definitely worth a try. If you’ve ever been to a Middle Eastern food section at a mall, you’ll know that their most popular spice is the thyme, sesame, cumin filled spice, za’atar. This delicious, tangy spice is what the egg preparation Shakshouka is loaded with. We’re happy that someone in the city is serving the baked eggs and caramelised onion dish we love so much and the one at Moshe’s is definitely not a let-down. price `150 Where Moshe’s outlets across the city

khurShid — bhurji pav If you’ve never had the Bhurji Pav at Khurshid, you’re really missing out on one of the many joys that an egg has to offer. Whether it’s the beauty of eggs in the continued on pg 14 «

One egg, 10 ways >> Indigo Deli’s Eggs on the Beach includes perfectly poached eggs, served with crispy bacon and crab cakes

middle of the night or the fact that it’s loaded with butter and masala, the eggs are finger licking good! They’re pretty unhealthy, so we suggest not making it your weekly midnight egg run, but for an occasional indulgence, they’re worth looking around a bit for, as they have a constantly moving stall. Price Approximately `65 where Near Amar Juice Centre, Irla

BOiled: Place an egg in boiling water for 12 minutes and you’ll get hard boiled whites and yolks. There is also a soft-boiled variety where the whites are firm, but the yolk is runny. COddled: Do you like your egg runny? Then you’ll love coddled eggs. They’re cooked very lightly. We suggest you check that you’ve got great eggs, free from spots or marks, before attempting to make this one.

Jimmy BOy — salli Par edu Jimmy Boy is a great restaurant for a lot of reasons and the long list of Parsi dishes definitely tops the list. Head to this little piece of history because whatever type of egg you’re craving, they’ve got it. And, of course, the Akuri (a type of scrambled egg filled with masala to die for) and Salli Par Edu are worth their weight in gold. Toss your diet aside and bow down to this dish, made with two sunny sides up, on a bed of crisp salli (thin strips of fried potato), tomatoes and coriander. It’s spicy, so remember to tell them to add less chillies if you can’t stand sweating over breakfast. Price `115 where Vikas Building, 11 Bank Street, Off Horniman Circle, Fort

indigO deli — eggs On the BeaCh Poached eggs are a treat. We know that not a lot of people think so, but the runny yolk encased in firm white is just delectable. Very few places can make poached eggs perfectly, but Indigo Deli is definitely one of the special ones. The Eggs on the Beach is our ultimate favourite. It’s a guilty indulgence, with crispy bacon and crab cakes added to the mix, but we promise you, the two poached eggs smothered with creamy hollandaise sauce is worth every calorie. Price `645 where Indigo Deli outlets

suzette — COmPlete CrePe Disha Hoskote from Fort is an epicurean at heart and loves visiting newly opened restaurants. She’s tried several egg dishes for breakfast at many eateries, but the one that she’s definitely planning to gorge on soon is the Complete Crepe at Suzette. She says, “Suzette’s Complete Crepe is a sophisticated breakfast preparation with eggs. Buckwheat crepes with ham and creamy emmenthal is a sure-shot success recipe, but it’s their

As we said earlier, the egg can be cooked in several ways. These are some of the common forms you’ll find your egg in:

An egg contains high-quality proteins and essential amino acids. 4. Eggs also help prevent blood clots, strokes and heart attacks. 5. One egg yolk helps regulate the brain, nervous system and cardiovascular system. 6. Eggs have healthy fats. 7. Eating two eggs a day improves your lipid profile. 8. Eggs have vitamin D. 9. KOOlar & CO. — wrestler Omelette This one’s for the folks who either love to share or have a hefty appetite. Paramjeet Kaur of Sion ordered the Wrestler Omelette at the charming Irani restaurant and was glad to carry a fairly heavy doggie bag home for lunch as well. Recollecting her first tryst with this generously elaborate dish, Paramjeet says, “Koolar & Co’s Wrestler Omelette can be a good contender for the Man v/s Food show. Packed with five eggs, the omelette is a dense, delicately fried treat, which can easily account for three meals turned into one!” Price `125 >> A poached eggs dish will have runny yolks, bound together by firm whites

way to eat an egg. When you crack an egg gently into a pan, leaving the yolk whole and frying it lightly only on one side, that’s your sunny (yolk!) side up.

deviled: A picnic favourite, if you’ve ever watched the Mickey Mouse cartoon, you know that devilled eggs are a Disney favourite. These hard boiled eggs are cut in half; the yolks scooped out, mashed with seasonings and then gently placed back in their white shells. Omelette: As plain and boring as this may sound — it’s not! The beaten eggs dish is made flat and fried in the pan quickly. If you fill it with vegetables, meat or even just cheese and fold it over, you’ve got a delicious, filling, stuffed omelette.

shahnaz – egg BhurJi

>> The scrambled eggs served at Scrumptious in Andheri is creamy and delicious!

There are a few places in the city that have mastered the simply delightful Egg Bhurji. And these eateries are not fancy restaurants, but small stalls and quaint establishments. One such joint, according to Rebecca D’Souza of Mahim, is Hotel Shahnaz. She says,”While it’s from a rather simple joint, I don’t think that any egg lover who visits this place would be able to resist their Egg Bhurji once they’ve had a bite. There are a lot of restaurants which have tried recreating this dish with Shahnaz’s flavour, but it just doesn’t match up.” Price `45 where 14, Pathan Manzil, Lady Jamshedji Road, Mahim (W)

ow does one feel to have 10 heads? It’s an amusing question but does it have an answer? Acclaimed and distinguished artist Sanjay Thapar is in a unique position to answer that! Born in Calcutta, West Bengal, Sanjay's father was a captain in the merchant navy and his mother was a teacher. Having travelled widely across the length and breadth of the country as a child, Sanjay started sketching faces of celebrities and superheroes and would often paint the walls of his room. Sanjay’s art is all an amalgamation of his life experiences, perceptions and divine expressions and he is set to showcase this with his first ever solo exhibition in Mumbai. He seeks to express a world beyond the confines of the physical canvas, something that is not defined by right and wrong. Talking about his exhibition, Sanjay says, “My paintings are usually a reflection of what others think and feel. I analyse people’s thoughts and then process that into paintings. However, with this show, I chose to tread on a different path; this show highlights my thoughts, my feelings and my interpretations. I believe in the ideology that my brush should do the talking and it is best depicted with the varied range of artworks that are a part of this show. Another highlight of this show is that it is my very first solo show in Mumbai.” When Up to June 11 Where Jehangir Art Gallery, Kalaghoda contact www.sanjaythapar.com

However, the raw mango version, while potent, was too tart for our liking. The mango was overpowering and killed any buzz that the cocktail might have generated. They also have a decent selection of imported and domestic liquor, which is reasonably priced. The food served here is mostly finger food and it’s ideal for a bar setting. They don’t claim to serve authentic Cuban food, but they do try to add a few Cuban influences to their menu. To get a taste of what Loca Loca has to offer,

oca in Spanish means crazy. So, we headed to the new Cuban bar expecting some seriously whacked out stuff; after all, its nameplate did claim to be double the crazy. But, when we stepped in, our reaction was “WTF!” First, the floor plan is same as Kishore D.F’s previous venture WTF! which had a brief stint as Hungry Birds. Second, it isn’t crazy. But, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The Cuban inspired bar has lime green walls with plush leather sofas and low tables dotting the inside section. The bar is in the same area as before, but is now peppered with vintage looking lamps that add a cute charm to the bar. The adjoining section is predominantly orange, with framed Cuban movie and music poster frames on the wall. There’s also a hat and maracas installation that’s a little cheesy, but adds a fun element to the décor. The outdoor section includes a combination of high tables and coffee tables, but what really stands out is the vibrant wall mural that depicts a typical Cuban road. We decided to sink into the plush leather sofas and be warned, you’ll find it hard to get up. These are so luxurious! We started our bar night with a Watermelon Cubanito (`350) and Raw Mango Cubanito (`350) — the watermelon cocktail gave us a

>> While Loca Loca did remind us a lot of WTF!, their leather sofa setting (above) is inviting. A wall mural (left) depicting a typical Cuban road adds an artistic touch to the bar we ordered the Vegetarian Platter (`445) and the Non-Vegetarian Platter (`550), both of which include four different starters. The Chicken Wrap on the platter stood out and was a filling snack. However, the rest of the chicken starters, while decent, all had a heavy dose of chilli powder that camouflaged any other flavours. But, what surprised our carnivorous selves was the vegetarian platter. The Cauli Fritobit (cauliflower coated in a batter and deep fried in a sticky sauce), Basil Mushrooms, Choco & Cheese Poppers (salty

cheese and rich chocolate) and Orange & Parmesan Crusted Paneer, were all uniquely delicious in terms of flavour and texture. Another surprise were the Fries with Sour Cream Dust (`125) — the simple flavour had us swiping the bowl in a minute. The average price of a dish is `200 which is impressive. Overall, we feel that Loca Loca is a mature version of WTF! While it might not have a crazy crowd, we’re more than happy to kick back on their leather sofas and enjoy a couple of drinks.

Dev Goswami visits Pallette (the EATC of Lower Parel) and comes back impressed with its service and delectable food Located in the heart of a business area, Pallette is a non-fussy restaurant that will remind you of an office mess. It’s located in an open area, on the ground floor of one of the business buildings in Kamala Mills and is simply done up in all-white. Keeping in mind its target audience, they also have free WiFi. The restaurant is self-serve — you pick up a plate, make your way down their long counter, pick up what you want and pay at >> (Top) The Thai Red Gravy with the end. So, quite obviously service is noodles is worth trying. The Mint prompt and it won’t take you more than 10 Chicken Wrap (below) is filling and the Chicken Salad (bottom) is well-seasoned minutes to get your meal. The menu has a lot of fast food options, including pizzas, sandwiches and burgers. They also have healthy options such as salads as well as Continental, Indian and Oriental dishes. We especially liked their breakfast menu, which is on from 9am to noon and includes eggs, bagels and pancakes. We started off with two salads — Prawn and Chicken (`99 each). The Chicken salad, which came with corn and boiled potatoes, was light and well-seasoned. I preferred it over the Prawn salad, which

had a mix of corn, cold pasta and tomatoes. We then tried their BBQ Chicken Peppers Pizza (`89). It was small with a thin crust and I felt that they were a bit stingy with the chicken pieces. Overall, it didn’t taste great. You’d be better off ordering their burgers or wraps; the Crispy Chicken Burger (`129) is especially good. It was really well done and the thick and crisp chicken patty resulted in a delightful meaty taste. The star of the night was undoubtedly the Mint Chicken Wrap (`129). It’s a delightful mix of chicken pieces with mint chutney and though there was oodles of chutney, the flavours were balanced. Their Thai Red Gravy, which comes with noodles as a part of their Oriental Combo (`189), is spicy. Not everyone will be able to handle this hot dish, but if you can, then it’s a must! The noodles are under-flavoured and allow the curry to work its magic. The quantity is enough for two, especially if you’ve had a sandwich or a burger before. For dessert, we tried their Chocolate Mousse and Tiramisu (`79 each) and both were impressive. I personally liked the creamy mousse; it had two layers — milk chocolate and dark chocolate. Overall, it is quite obvious that Pallette is meant for the working crowd. But, that doesn’t mean that you can’t pop in and relish the amazing food the next time you’re in Lower Parel and hunger strikes.

Torrent Pharma’s policy is to distribute 30% of its annual consolidated net profit after tax as dividend in one or more tranches. Torrent Pharma has declared bonus share in ratio of 1:1 that is one bonus share for one existing share each. Torrent has expands operations into overseas markets of Latin America & European Union. Net Sales and PAT of the company are expected to grow at a CAGR of 22% and 39% over 2012 to 2015E respectively. Outlook and Conclusion: At the current market price of Rs.830.00, the stock P/E ratio is at 9.99 x FY14E and 8.49 x FY15E respectively. Earnings per share of the company for the earnings for FY14E and FY15E are seen at Rs.83.08 and Rs.97.77 respectively. Net Sales and PAT of the company are expected to grow at a CAGR of 22% and 39% over 2012 to 2015E respectively. On the basis of EV/EBITDA, the stock trades at 7.44 x for FY14E and 6.45 x for FY15E. Price to Book Value of the stock is expected to be at 3.56 x and 2.98 x respectively for FY14E and FY15E. We expect that the company surplus scenario is likely to continue for the next three years, will keep its growth story in the coming quarters also. We recommend ‘BUY’ in this particular scrip with a target price of Rs. 925.00 for Medium to Long term investment.

Sushil Finance calls a ‘Buy’ on Aegis Logistics CMP: Rs. 138 Target Rs. 205

Outlook & Valuation: We strongly believe that Aegis Logistics, India’s leading oil, gas, and chemical logistics company, is likely to be in a sweet spot from FY14E due to spurt in volume from the high margin business – Liquid division post expansion and Retail Autogas and Commercial cylinder business due to -cap on subsidized cylinders and network expansion. Also, with the expiry of the options contract in Mar’13, the volatility in earnings is also likely to reduce considerably. However, revenue is likely to grow at a slower pace of 6% in FY14 as its wholesale low margin gas business is witnessing short term blip because of lower offtake from National Oil Companies. Keeping in mind subdued volumes from the wholesale segment, we have reduced our earnings estimate for FY14E by 12% to Rs.22.6 and introduced FY15 earnings of Rs.33.8. The stock currently trades at 6.3x and 4.2x its FY14E and FY15E EPS vs 5yr average P/E of 12x. We thus continue to maintain our positive outlook on the company with BUY rating and a target price of Rs. 205.

Confidence that fiscal deficit target of 4.8 % during 2013-14 can be easily achieved. Concerned over the current account deficit blaming increasing gold imports for much of the problem By A Business Reporter

E

xpressing confidence that fiscal deficit target of 4.8 % during 2013-14 can be easily achieved, Finance Minister P Chidambaram while addressing the Annual General Meeting of the Indian Banks’ Association, IBA in Mumbai yesterday said, “we have been able to lower the fiscal deficit from 5.3 % to 4.9 %. This has been achieved through substantial fiscal tightening in the second half of last year.” He said the government hopes to achieve the fiscal deficit target without compressing expenditure, but by expecting investments to pick up in remaining three quarters of the year. He also said that there is no cause for concern over the fall of the Indian Rupee as the capital inflows were strong. “I think the Rupee will stabilize and find its correct level” he said on the sidelines of the IBA AGM. He however expressed serious concern over the current account deficit and blamed increasing gold

imports for much of the problem. He informed that while on an average 70 tons of gold was imported in a month during 2012-13, the monthly gold imports have doubled during the current fiscal. Finance Minister strongly discouraged the practice of investing in gold and also asked the banks not to promote sale of gold coins. “Gold is like any other metal, it only shines a bit more”, he added. Referring to the current GDP growth, he admitted that 5 % growth is low and is not acceptable. Though, this rate is being termed the lowest in a decade, the Finance Minister pointed out that the Indian economy registered its lowest growth of the new century during 2001-02 and 2002-03, at 4.8 % and 4 %. “We are not satisfied with the growth picture, but there is hope”, he added. Chidambaram said an increase in rural demand following a good rabi crop, increased government spending and lower inflation will help the economy to grow. In order to kick-

Stating that 215 major projects entailing a capital expenditure of Rs 7 lakh crores have been stalled, he said the Government has set up a special committee to track them and will seriously work towards removing all bottlenecks. “I assure investors that each project will be tracked and government will help see them through”. The Finance Minister said it is a matter of relief that the wholesale price inflation is falling and the Consumer Price Inflation is also showing moderation. “As the inflation rate falls, there will be more disposable income with the people, which will lead to growth in deposits with banks, as the current interest rates are attractive.” He said India can’t afford growth of less than 8 %, if we have to take advantage of demographic dividend. “It is not a pious hope, it is India’s potential growth rate” he added.

Contrary to impressions, Ranbir denies being overawed by their charismatic presence during the shots. “It was great fun because I had always wondered what it would be like to share screen space with my star-celeb dad and mom. It’s a dream come true, I guess,” smiles the actor whose secret aspiration of sharing the screen with childhood crush Madhuri Dixit was fulfilled when he swayed with her in YJHD.

T

he chilled-out Ranbir Kapoor refuses to waltz into the complacency zone, following boxoffice reports that his latest movie Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has set the biggest opening record for 2013 having crossed the Rs 62-crore mark. Reacts the Kapoor, whose ambitious detached character ‘Bunny’ who literally loves going places, until he finally hurls an emotional anchor. “Yes, it’s heartening news for the entire cast and crew. But one can’t afford to be just thrilled and take it easy. It’s a benchmark expectation that I have to live up to and perform even better the next time around,” smiles the actor who endeared himself with his recent performance as the mute lover-boy in Barfi. Incidentally, the onscreen ‘made-for-eachother’ chemistry of Ranbir’s pairing with his ‘ex-girlfriend’ Deepika Padukone seems to have worked again this time. It may be recalled, that they had both hit it off in Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008 ) and were touted as the hot lovey-dovey jodi. Was there any awkwardness between them while breaking-the-ice

I love taking things easy: Sonam Kapoor June 9 is the 27th birthday of SONAM KAPOOR. She is someone who simply fell in love with acting. Having connections in the film industry does help the star sons and daughters. It has helped Sonam to work with some talented directors at the beginning of her career. The demure actress will next be seen in Raanjhanaa, Bhaag Mikha Bhaag, the Khoobsurat remake and a YRF’s untitled film. She says her endeavour is to be different on the screen. SUNEEL V. GAUR and RAJESH V. GAUR met up with the actress recently for an interview. Excerpts:

What is your role in Raanjhnaa about? I will be seen playing different ages in the film. I had to perform differently and modulate my voice too. It was an incredible opportunity to showcase my talent. I am blessed to be a part of Raanjhnaa.

In Raanjhnaa you have acted opposite Dhanush, from the southern film industry. I can call Dhanush a really good friend now. He is so respectful and modest and an incredible actor. He is insanely talented.

You are acting in the remake of the Rekha-starrer Khubsoorat? Yes. I am playing the role of a freespirited girl and the film is the modern interpretation of the Rekhastarrer Khubsoorat which was a big hit. The essence of it is inspired but the story, the idea is completely different. I would love it if Rekhaji does a cameo in this one.

What’s your opinion on the trend of remakes? The trend of remakes is good. I think every generation re-looks at a story. I don’t think there is anything wrong with remakes.

You have done just six–seven films in five years. Why is that? I love taking things easy. If you are constantly taking on one film after another, you don’t know what’s going on… you can’t mull over the things that you have done before. You don’t even have time to analyse your performances and see where you can improve. What is your fitness regime? I eat right, I have a nutritionist who takes care of me. I have people who are constantly firing me to drink enough water. It’s about eating right, drinking enough water, being happy and surrounding yourself with positive people.

Never give up in life, says Big B

M

egastar Amitabh Bachchan, who shared screen space with late actress Jiah Khan, today advised people not to give up in life despite encountering setbacks and failure in achieving their goals. “I am saddened and shocked with the news (of Jiah Khan’s suicide). I request all not to take such a step because of depression,” Bachchan said while talking to reporters at an event here last evening. The 25-year-old actress was found hanging at her flat in Juhu on Monday night. Though she did not leave behind a suicide note, it is said depression due to failure on personal and professional fronts led her to take the drastic step. “There are people who are sad, worried, depressed with life as their dreams remain unfulfilled. I request them not to give up in life,” Big B said.

RINGSIDE VIEW Deepa Gahlot

J

iah Khan’s suicide has one again drawn attention to the hidden darkness behind the blinding lights of Bollywood stardom. Unless there are strings—like money or industry pedigree—that can be pulled, the Bollywood dream can shatter very fast. The stakes are so high and the desire to break in is so powerful, because success can give wealth, fame and a stab at immortality. But then, failure is that much more painful and heart-breaking. Perhaps it is better to fail and learn to deal with it, than to get a little success, taste the glory and have it all cruelly snatched away. Jiah Khan did three films, but was actually a one-film wonder— the only film of hers than can be recalled easily is Nishabd, in which she played a young temptress in love with a much older man (opposite Amitabh Bachchan, no less). She made a convincing Lolita, but maybe that daring introduc-

Jiah Khan and Amitabh Bachchan in Nishabd tion made it difficult for an unimaginative industry to see her in conventional ‘heroine’ parts. Jiah had what it takes to get into showbiz—a pushy mother with a short film past, good looks and the right amount of sexiness. What she did not have is the ability to pretend that she was so choosy, that she did wanted to do only challenging roles. That’s the excuse of other actors whose careers come to an unexpected halt. They hang out at parties, try to get into Page 3 photos, aim for fashion shows or ads, and hope to stay in the public eye as long

as they can. If stardom gets beyond reach, then bit parts, item numbers and eventually TV reality shows or serials, possibly marriage to a rich catch. The trajectory has already been set. Very seldom does it vary, but sometimes miracles happen, so every aspirant lives on hope. For instance, Madhuri Dixit was ‘rediscovered’, groomed and presented by Subhash Ghai and went to become a superstar. It doesn’t follow, however, that a big launch or star parents will automatically ensure everlasting success. Showbiz is littered with star kids who

did not last very long after the big parent-funded debut. Earlier, only media gossip columns used to sneer at failed actors, now the online world with anonymous nastiness can kill the strongest ego. This is not a business for the weak or thin-skinned. And along with the trauma of career failure, if the personal life is also a mess, then it must be very difficult to look the world in the eye every day and pretend all is well.

true. Talking about the event, Pacino said, “I love being on the stage, it’s a big passion of mine. It was a privilege to perform in London at the Palladium after so many years. I loved the live element of the event.”

I’m not pregnant: Esha Deol Divyendu to get serious for Zaalim Dilli t was recently reported by a select section of the Imedia ctor Divyendu Sharma, who that Esha Deol may his acting debut Amade with Pyaar Ka Punchnama and impressed everyone with his comic timing and talent, will be seen in a serious role for the very first time in Zaalim Dilli. Confirming the news, Sharma said that he had wanted to try a serious role after his comic roles in Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Chashme Baddoor and he felt that this role suited him the best. The film has been shot in Dubai as well as Delhi. A FTII passout and a theatre artiste, Sharma won many accolades for his debut role in Pyaar Ka Punchnama, where he essayed the role of Liquid.

EW DELHI: Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap whose short film was screened at the Cannes festival recently, says short films will redefine the future of Indian cinema. “Short films will redefine the future of Indian cinema and not some mainstream one whose fate is decided on a Friday night. In fact shorts have already redefined it, so to speak and, are offering us perspectives that big-ticket cinema hardly does,” says Kashyap. The director whose Murabba was part of Bombay Talkies - an anthology of four short films that was screened at the Cannes 2013 festival, has also co produced five short films with Viacom 18, which have been released on YouTube. The films are part of the ‘India is’ web-based campaign, run under the aegis of the Public Diplomacy Division of the External Affair Ministry. Commissioned by YouTube under publicprivate-par tnership with the MEA, the films exploring a common theme – ‘India Is a Visual Journey’ – are made by young upcoming directors who have collaborated with Kashyap on his previous projects like, Dev D, Shor and Gangs of Wasseypur

among others. The five films – Hidden Cricket, Geek Out, Chai, Moi Murjani and Epiphany along with over 500 video submissions marked the ‘India Is’ a digital platform campaign from the Division, to connect and interact with people from all over the world and make them think more about India. “People think feature films are difficult to make. But, short films are harder to make. The kind of India and the visual appeal that these films are providing a regular, mainstream film never can,” said Kashyap.

report in a widely-circulated daily not only claims that the actress Leena Maria Paul is not a part of Shoojit Sircar’s new film Madras Cafe. It also quotes one of the film’s Executive Producers as saying the incarcerated actress, held for several cheating cases, was “never” a part of Madras Cafe. However, director Shoojit Sircar confirms otherwise to this writer. He clearly states that Leena is a part of the vast cast of Madras Cafe. However, he clarifies that Leena’s arrest in no way affects the film. Says Shoojit, “She plays one of the 60 characters in Madras Cafe.” The question is why is the film’s Executive Producer quoted as saying the actress is not part of the film’s cast, when she is?

BANGKOK: Defending champion Saina Nehwal, H S Prannoy and K Srikanth reached the quarter-finals of the Thailand Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament here. Top seed Saina thrashed Indonesia's Febby Angguni 21-12, 21-11 in just over half an hour to set up a clash with eighth seed Juan Gu of Singapore. Juan beat compatriot Xiaoyu Liang 21-13, 21-11 in another pre-quarterfinal match. In men's singles, Prannoy bounced from a game down to prevail over fellow Indian 10th seed Anand Pawar 19-21, 21-13, 2115, while 13th seed K Srikanth defeated Hwang Jong Soo of Korea 21-19, 21-15 in another match. However, Sai Praneeth B lost to Indonesia's Wisnu Yuli Prasetyo 1821, 21-16, 19-21 to crash out of the tournament. Febby was no match for Saina as the world number two Indian reeled off seven points to open up a huge 7-0 lead and then held her fort to pocket the game. In the second game, Febby took two points early on but Saina didn't give any chance to the Indonesian thereafter as she pocketed seven straight points to reach 11-3 and eventually seal the issue without much ado.

Football Leaders defence marshalled by Rachita Malik played an important role in keeping Agnel’s strikers Velanine Fernandes and winger Mitchelle Castana at bay. Crippled by the absence of their star striker Anima Malik, Football Leaders tried their best to score on the counter through Hiba Fiqui and Priya Tiwari on either flanks but Agnel’s custodian Candice Fernandes rose to the challenge to deny them the lead. Agnel’s midfielder Sharon Fernades attempts at the goal with long rangers to break the dead lock too yielded no results. The Vasai based team however had their best opportunity in to the second half with the Agnel’s custodian beaten but Pooja Morey attempt was cleared off the goal line by defender Stessi Cardozo. Tie breaker was resorted to after both teams failed to score at the end of 80 minutes.

Divij, Raja in quarters of Germany clay court Challenger

NEW DELHI: Third seeded Indian pair of Divij Sharan and Purav Raja made it to the quarter-final of the ATP Challenger event in Furth, Germany after a hard-earned win in the opening round. Lefthanded Divij and Raja defeated Andrej Martin of Slovak Republic and Hans Podlipnik-Castillo of

Both the teams held serve after that and the Indians easily pocketed the set. However, their rivals regrouped and made a stunning comeback. They routed the Indians in the

second set with two breaks, stretching the issue to a match tie-breaker. Now the Indians upped the ante and edged past Martin and Hans to clinch the issue. Divij and Raja next play Kevin Krawietz and Dominic Schulz of Germany in the quarter finals today.

Asylum-seeker Ahmed gets Australia ‘A’ call

SYDNEY: Former Pakistani asylum-seeker Fawad Ahmed moved a step closer to playing in next month's Ashes series against England after being rushed into the Australia ‘A’ team for their tour of Britain. The prospects of Ahmed, 31, playing for his adopted country improved dramatically when a bill to amend the Citizenship Act, which will help fast-track his application, passed through Australia's lower house of parliament Wednesday. "Fawad is a spin bowler of interest and we look forward to seeing how he performs for Australia A," chief selector John Inverarity said, expressing confidence his citizenship would soon be awarded. While the legislation still needs to go through the upper house, Cricket Australia said it appeared there was enough support for it to become law.

ARIS: Defending champion Maria Sharapova stormed her way past Belarusian third seed Victoria Azarenka 61, 2-6, 6-4 to reach the French Open final on Thursday. The Russian second seed will clash with world number one Serena Williams who humbled Italian fifth seed Sara Errani 6-0. 61 in a lopsided semifinal. The world No. 1 was hardly tested in a match which proved to be a mauling. Errani's task was going to be tough right from the off, but after losing the opening game to love the world No. 5 showed encouraging signs that she was going to push Williams in the match. She fended off one break point but was unable to do so on the second as Williams put her foot on the gas, and suddenly the floodgates began to open. Williams only dropped three points in the following three games to race to the opening set in 21 minutes, and the alarm bells were beginning to ring for her opponent as the tie could be over very quickly if it continued in the same pattern. En route to taking the first three games of the second set, Williams had clocked up 22 of the last 24 points, but after enduring one whitewash Errani ensured she would not be hit by a double one as she clinched the

Ex-Bangladesh coach not surprised at Ashraful fixing

WELLINGTON: Former Bangladesh cricket coach Jamie Siddons says ex-captain Mohammad Ashraful shouldn't be judged too harshly for his involvement in match-fixing because he was likely ensnared by the "powerful beast of underworld gambling" at an early age. Siddons, who now coaches New Zealand's Wellington province, told the Dominion-Post newspaper he alerted the Bangladesh Cricket Board and International Cricket Council to the threat of spot fixing during his four-year term as Bangladesh coach from 2007 to 2011. Ashraful admitted to match- and spot-fixing in the Bangladesh Premier League after being suspended by the BCB on Tuesday. He is being investigated by the ICC. The Australian-born Siddons said he wasn't surprised to hear of Ashraful's involvement, saying "It's disappointing but I don't think it's surprising. It's a powerful beast the underworld gambling."

The up-and-coming “Kiki,” as the public knows her here, joined doubles veteran Nestor in an inspiring trot to the final, in which the No. 5 seeds didn’t drop a set. Azarenka hit back to take the second set but lost her momentum after a 30-minute rain interruption, Sharapova wrapping it up on her fifth match point after two hours 10 minutes. Coming in to this match, Azarenka actually led their career jousts 7-5. They played six times last year alone, and she also edged those 4-2 – but tellingly Sharapova had won both their clay-court meetings. So it was to prove again in Azarenka’s debut semi-final at Roland Garros. In baking heat on Philippe Chatrier Court, this match was the expected big noise from the off. Sharapova’s errors cost her that opening game, including two doubles, yet from there she tore off with the first set, leaving the Australian Open champion dazed. All Azarenka could do was applaud when lobbed perfectly, and Sharapova won the set on an ace. Azarenka had won just 20% of points on her first service – desperate stuff in any case, but utterly hopeless in the face of the Russian’s 91%. The final set went this way in a see-saw encounter before Sharapova squeezed home.

Kundra hits out at media after questioning in IPL scandal N EW DELHI: His passport seized after close to 12 hours of questioning by the Delhi Police, Rajasthan Royals owner Raj Kundra lashed out at the media for making "stupid claims" on his alleged involvement in the IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal. "Good morning woke up to news raj kundra faces the heat...Yes it's very hot in Mumbai. Media has misconstrued everything using unreliable sources. Try speaking to the Main guys at crime branch. Why does media hype things and make such stupid claims to sell news," Kundra tweeted after reports emerged that he had confessed to betting during questioning on Wednesday. Kundra's passport has been seized by Delhi Police which questioned him in connection with the IPL spot-fixing scandal and allegations that he was into betting. Police have asked Kundra not to leave the country. Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said Kundra has admitted to betting. "He used to bet on his own team. We have also come to know that he has lost a lot of money in betting. "He used to bet through Goenka, who is also a bookie," he said. Buttler stars as England stop Kiwi rot

NOTTINGHAM, UK: Jos Buttler made an unbeaten 47 off just 16 balls to set-up England's 34-run win over New Zealand in the third and final one-day international at Trent Bridge. Man-of-the-match Buttler yesterday needed a six off the last ball of England's innings to surpass Sri Lanka great Sanath Jayasuriya's 17-ball record for the fastest ODI fifty, set against Pakistan in Singapore in 1996. But instead he could only manage two off Tim Southee. Nevertheless the 22-year-old wicket-keeper's innings featured six fours and three sixes. The Black Caps still took the three-match series 2-1 after wins by five wickets and 86 runs at Lord's and Southampton respectively last week as England suffered their first home ODI series loss in four years. For England, victory stopped the rot ahead of their Champions Trophy opener against arch-rivals Australia at Edgbaston on Saturday. "Getting a win was very important and I thought we played pretty well," said England captain Alastair Cook.

Windies take on mercurial Pakistan in CT's Group B opener L

Pakistan West Indies To be played at: Kennington Oval, London Time: 15:00 Hours

ONDON: Former champions West Indies will lock horns with the incredibly unpredictable Pakistan in what promises to be a highvoltage group B Champions Trophy clash at the Oval here today. The Caribbean team, which won the title in 2004 besides finishing runners-up in 1998 and 2006, is high on star power with the intimidating presence of an in-form Chris Gayle being a massive confidencebooster. Pakistan, on the other hand, is a team full of greenhorns despite being led by the oldest player in the event -- a 39-year-old Misbah-ul-Haq. A look at the line-ups would make the West Indies slight favourites for today's match. Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Kieron Pollard and Kemar Roach have the ability to just knock out the opposition attack with their

power-hitting. In fact, the troika of Gayle, Pollard and Samuels displayed good form at the recent IPL and would be looking to carry the confidence into the Champions Trophy even though the format would be different. Skipper and all-rounder Dwayne Bravo is another player who can be a matchwinner on his day. Gayle's aggregate of 695 in Champions Trophy matches is the highest among all batsmen. On the bowling front, the outfit has quite a few tricksters in the line-up, including the surprise package of pacer Jason Holder. The youngest in the team is 6'8" tall and could prove to be a decisive factor in the seaming conditions with his medium pace. Among the slower bowlers, Sunil Narine has been a proven performer and would be expected to

work his magic here after a stupendous IPL performance. The Caribbeans were, however, handed a sound thrashing by the Australians in their most recent ODI assignment at the beginning of the year and it remains to be seen whether they can regroup. Interestingly, the West Indians have the record of most number of matches won in the Champions Trophy, having registered 12 victories. Pakistan, in contrast, have no big match-winners to boast of after the ouster of senior players such as Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi and Younis Khan. Their pace spearhead Umar Gul was ruled out due to injury. But if any team is capable of doing exactly what is not expected of it, it is Pakistan. Misbah's men are considered mercurial and tempera-

mental but talented and passionate nonetheless. It remains to be seen which bunch turns up at the Oval today to match the West Indian flair. On the batting front, the Pakistanis would look for good starts from the experienced Mohammed Hafeez. In the absence of Afridi, Kamran Akmal would be expected to perform the pinch-hitter's role lower down with Misbah and Shoaib Malik being the backbone of a fragile middle-order. Their bowling attack, however, looks interesting with three left-arm pacers, including the 7'1" tall Mohammad Irfan, Junaid Khan and Wahab Riaz. The two right-armers are Asad Ali and Ehsan Adil. In the absence of Gul, senior offspinner Saeed Ajmal remains the most experienced bowler and he would be expected to work his magic.
