gainst the backdrop of debacle in the Lok Sabha elections, the state government has swung into the action for damage control exercise. Keeping an eye on the forthcoming Assembly elections, the Congress-NCP government yesterday presented an additional budget for 2014-15 projecting a revenue deficit of Rs 4,103 crore against Rs 3,017 crore in 2013-14, which can be termed as a populist budget. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who is holding charge of the Finance department, presented the budget in the Assembly. As a part of slew sops, Pawar has proposed tax exemption worth Rs

962 crore to traders, farmers and industry. He assured the house that the revenue loss on account of these waivers would be compensated by efficient tax collection. In a bid to lure the working class, the government has proposed increase in the Profession Tax salary limit to Rs.7,500 from Rs.5,000. This will benefit nearly 8,00,000 low wage earners and employees. Mentally retarded persons are exempted from Profession Tax. Further, in order to boost the commerce, the government has proposed amendment to the Maharashtra Stamp Duty Act so that reasonability can be achieved in stamp duty Continued on pg 8 «

CITY OPINIONS

With Mumbai being the ‘noisiest city in the world’, do you think stringent enforcement of noisecontrol mechanism is the need of the hour? Rachna Kuradia Social Media Executive Yes, of course. I live near a busy street, and though I am on the 16th floor, I am awoken every morning by the sound of traffic. This is odd because I have never noticed a jam or block.

Meghna Kuradia Student Yes. Since the Mumbai community comprises people from all over India, it seems we are celebrating a festival every week with extra-loud music being played on speakers well into the night.

Dhanesh Kandhari PR Executive No. If rules are put in place, then youngsters will be unfairly targeted during weekend parties and get-togethers, even if we aren't making too much noise. Hitesh Keswani Exporter Yes. My grandmother who cannot even leave the house is exposed to the commotion on the streets on a daily basis, and gets peace and quiet for only half the night.

n the occasion of World Environment Day, P.D. Hinduja Hospital organised an event with children for drawing inspirational messages on a wall to spread the message of 'Go Green'. The hospital took permission from authorities for children to draw messages on the outside wall of Dhote Udyan (opposite to IPD building). More than 50 children of hospital employees and from the community came together in the morning to paint the wall with 'Go Green' messages based on the theme of preservation of natural resources and conservation of the environment. Teachers from JJ College of Arts supported this event of the hospital by providing guidance to the children while painting the wall. The hospital undertook this project to inculcate a habit of

On this occasion, Gautam Khanna, CEO, P.D. Hinduja Hospital said, “Our hospital has always believed in conservation of resources for better quality of life of the next generation. I am happy that these kids are painting the wall on this occasion to spread the same message. Our hospital works towards providing quality healthcare to all, and keeping the environment green. ocusing on major issues like usage of recycled products, planting trees, using public transport, maintaining cleanliness on this Environment Day, the ADC spoke to Mumbaikars who did their part in saving the environment. Trees are crucial for a better environment. Neha Kumar (20), a student from Fort in south Mumbai, who is actively into greening, said, "Everyone should plant at least one tree. It will make a huge difference. Using recycled products is also an effective step. I have planted trees and that's my way to protect the environment." Falguni Pandare (21), her friend, feels that using recycled products is definitely not a popular trend in India as yet. She says,"I believe in the concept of aforestation. Usage of recycled products is limited to a very small section of people." Despite the issue being raised at different platforms about planting trees to protect the environment, there are people who never planted trees ever! Shahrukh Wadia (60) agitated about the lack of space in the city, said, "I have never planted a tree. I don't know where to plant one. Where is the place to plant trees in this city?" Ranjit, a solar engineer feels that there is no concept of greening in the city, and the careless attitude of people has ruined the environment. He says,"Everyone can easily play an important role in saving the environment. We can plant trees, use public transport as much as possible and keep our surroundings clean. Aforestation is the best thing to opt for." Chinmay Shukla (15) says,"Using biodegradable and recycled products is a good thing, but planting

Nikhil Patil (15), believes that a single effort will make a difference. He adds, "I have planted trees and I feel good about it. Everyone should plant trees in order to save the environment. A green environment is a healthy environment." "The concept of using recycled products is not popular in India," says Mitesh (26), owner of Venus Paper Mart. He further added, "The demand for recycled paper is hardly 10 per cent. People are not comfortable with the concept of using recycled things here." recyclekaro.com, a waste managment company, took the initiative to spread awareness about recycling of different products. They organised awareness campaigns regarding the usage of recycled products to save the environment. The Green Team at recycle karo inspired people to take oath on the Green Book to protect the environment. Rajesh Nathan, a member of the Green Team, says,"Our organisation is spreading awareness about using recycled products for the past five years. Today, the members of our Green Team are conducting awareness programmes all over Mumbai. Unlike in the West, our people are not well-informed about the concept of recycling. That's why the awareness is important."

The RGJAY scheme to provide low-cost medical facilities to the poor sections of society has largely failed in the Naxal-affected districts of Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gondiya, Gadchiroli and Nandurbar, discovers Vishnudas Sheshrao

reatment becomes a farfetched and almost unattainable dream for the people falling under the government's Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana (RGJAY) scheme when even the registration for treatment happens to be an impossibly tedious process. The state government's ambitious online health scheme, set up to deliver medical care to deprived classes, is not working out. The rea-

However, there are many patients who would make for eligible beneficiaries, who are struggling with life-threatening health problems, but are undergoing and paying for their medical treatment at private hospitals. from Nandurbar district. However, in the adjoining Dhule district, 7,680 patients were registered and authorised and cleared for free surgeries. Similarly, Bhandara district has registered only 788 patients while the neighbouring Nagpur registered 3,073 in the same time span. Gondiya has registered 551 patients, Chandrapur 951 patients and Gadchiroli 642 patients till the end of May. In other districts though, the number of patients registered under this scheme has run into many thousands. Padmakar Valvi (Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare) said “The registration is going in Nandurbar district, however, the number may be low as compare to other districts. In my opinion, other small surgeries should be added in RGJAY so it will be more helpful for poor people.” One of the main reasons for low registration in these district is the difficulty of reaching out to people living in remote areas. The district co-ordinator admitted that the scheme is yet to reach scores of villages. Months after the health scheme started, several districts did not have computers, Internet connection and electricity supply. When they got the computers and Internet connectivity, they did not get decent places to set up RGJAY centres. Consequently, registration for RGJAY could not work out. The scheme is thus struggling in these districts. Local authorities, as well as senior officers in the state, were not eager to implement the health scheme in these districts. Every district has one district co-ordinator for RGJAY as per the list published on the official website. However, in Naxal affected regions, one co-ordinator has to handle two districts. Local authorities demanded that these districts should have two coordinators per district as virtual and physical communication is very difficult here. People are illiterate and they cannot read pamphlets in-

tudents between the age group of 6 and 13 are finding it difficult to register under this scheme as their names are not updated on ration cards. Earlier these students were treated under some other scheme. Headmasters of schools used to refer students with health problems to the district civic hospital where they were treated free of cost. However, now students are also covered under RGJAY for which they have to submit a long list of documents. An estimated 170 students are deprived of free medical treatment in these five districts simply because their name is not officials, they have to wait till on the ration cards and their age the next fiscal year for free is above six years. He said, “Every time they give me free medicine and a promise of surgery. I have completed my documentation and am waiting for the surgery. After a long wait, now I have come to a private hospital.” Chaya Patel, a resident of Nandurbar district, is one of the very few fortunate patients who was been operated under the RGJAY. She was being operated on Thursday in a private hospital, the bill for which will be paid by an insurance company on behalf of RGJAY. Chaya's husband said, “It was not that easy as you think. Last year, we four brothers got divided. Consequently, my name was deleted from the ration card. The protestors created a heavy traffic jam in the area and also at GhatkoparMankhurd Link Road. They relented only after Shivaji Nagar police intervened and promised to solve the problem with the help of ward officials. But again on Wednesday, the locals shouted slogans against local corporator (ward no.129) Reshma Nervekar in front of her office, pelted stones and tore down the hoardings. As the corporator was not present during the incident, the public hurled abuses at the corporator’s PA Hasan Shaikh, whose wife went to Shivaji Nagar police station and lodged a complaint against two women under section 427 and 504 of the IPC, confirmed PSI Salim Khan. Nervekar blaming the incident as a planned and orchestrated attack alleged, “This water scarcity is the handy work of local water mafias and plumbers who provide illegal water connections. he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has served notices to buildings which are more than 30 years old in the city which are in highly dilapidated conditions and have asked the residents to vacate their homes and occupy a transit camp in Mahul. A structural audit that was conducted noted that out of the 120 buildings in which the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Class 4 employees reside, in the city as well as the eastern and the western suburbs, 55 buildings are in highly dangerous conditions.

Questioning why the residents are being shifted to Mahul, which will make it difficult to commute and affect their daily routine, BJP group leader Manoj Kotak said, “I had written a letter to the civic chief on May 26, 2013 asking him for the detailed report of where the employees will be shifted to, status of the work order for building transit camps and estimated budget. But till date, there has been no response from the civic chief.” BJP city president Ashish Shelar, along with Manoj Kotak and Improvement Committee Chairman Ujjawla Modak met Additional Municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani seeking an-

swers to why the BMC is not setting up transit camps in the city, eastern and western suburbs. Ashish Shelar has asked the BMC not to shift the employees to the Mahul camp.

There were objections to Kadam not being transferred for almost six years from his post even though transfers are routinely to be done every three years. Sources say that for the last one year or so there has not been a single complaint or FIR lodged at Shivaji Nagar police station against the water mafias and plumbers who provide illegal connections. This shows that the BMC officials are lax in their attitude despite the area having water scarcity.

Council chairman allows minister to sit in the House and participate in proceedings

JP-Shiv Sena members in Legislative Council objected to NCP Minister of State for School Education Fouzia Khan's participation during question hour yesterday, when she was trying to respond to a starred question raised by Bhagwanrao Salunkhe (Independent) and others. Raising a point of order, senior Sena MLC Diwakar Raote contended that the term of membership the NCP minister had ended on March 12 and wanted to know

whether the minister had taken the oath of office and secrecy. Giving his ruling on the issue, council Chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh ruled that the minister can attend the House and give replies as a Minister of State. However, he added that he was reserving his ruling on the issue of whether the minister, who has ceased to be a member of either of the two Houses, should once again take the oath of office and secrecy, and get elected within six months to retain the cabinet berth.

Govt offers condolence to Munde, oppn fumes By A Staff Reporter he BJP-Shiv Sena led opposition in the legislative council yesterday grilled the government over the haste shown by it while adopting a condolence resolution to mourn the sad demise of late Union rural development minister Gopinath Munde. Leader of opposition Vinod Tawde, senior Shiv Sena MLC Diwakar Raote and others argued that since all the senior members and group leaders were busy following the sudden demise of Munde they

not to take up the motion and postpone it. He reminded the house of the embarrassing controversy over the hasty condolence offered to Jayprakash Narayan in 1979 when actually he was very much alive. Phundkar charged the treasury benches of deliberately pushing through the condolence motion which pained the opposition as it too wanted to take part in the motion which was adopted on Tuesday. Intervening in the debate, Girkar stated that he and some opposition members

were not in a position to take part in the proceedings of the house. Giving his ruling, Council Chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh stated that the house will adopt a motion of gratitude on June 6 so that members from both the sides can offer their condolences to the departed leader. Taking part in the debate, senior BJP member Pandurang Phundkar stated that when his colleague Vijay Girkar called him up to inform him that the house was taking up the condolence motion for debate he told his colleague to urge the chair

who were present in the house then had urged the chair not to take up the motion. He added that even in the legislative assembly only Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan spoke. Dr Neelam Gorhe (Sena) wanted to know whether it was proper for the house to have adopted the condolence motion even before the cremation had taken place. She remarked that the government had shown its insensitive nature. Finally, Council Chairman ruled that the house will take up a resolution of gratitude in the house on June 6.

T

Congress-NCP members argued that there was no bar on the minister to once again take oath of office and secrecy as she had already done so in the past. Jayant Patil (PWPI) argued that the Khan's status as a minister expired the day her term of membership of the House had expired. He argued that only last month the House held a special session just to facilitate the election of Council Chairman and Leader of Opposition. Supporting his contention, Ashish Shelar (BJP) argued that the rights as minister and

member of the House automatically cease once the membership expires. Council Chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh stated that he will study the provisions in the law on whether the minister who is not a member of either of the two Houses has to once again take oath of office and secrecy or not. He added that under the powers vested in him, he was allowing the minister to sit in the House and give replies to the members. Not satisfied with the chair's ruling, the Opposition staged a walk-out from the House.

n an apparent move aimed at pepping-up the efficiency of his work force, municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani has ordered a major reshuffle in the MiraBhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC). In the first leg of the phase-wise reshuffle, all head clerks and senior clerks representing the Class III section have been transferred to other departments, and the process is on to rearrange postings of the entire strength comprising all junior clerks and peons from the Class IV division. To start with, seven head clerks and 23 senior clerks have been directed to take charge of their new departments with immediate effect, tagged with a warning of action against those who delay in taking charge of new posts or try to exert political pressure to cancel the transfer orders. “We have planned a phase-wise and cadre-wise reshuffle process which will definitely enhance the

quality of our work force,” Kakani confirmed. It should be noted that a large section of staffers have been holding the same posts for a considerable period of time. This is the first time in the history of the MBMC that such a massive internal reshuffle has been initiated by any commissioner. These transfers will not be limited just to the lower rung. There is a strong possibility of a reshuffle in the higher echelons of the MBMC, hinted an official who added that while reshuffle was the need of the hour in the MBMC, it is being done in accordance with the government rules.

he Vakola police have arrested an auto rickshaw driver who brutally chopped off his wife's head in front of his two children in Santacruz (E) on Thursday. The man identified as Dattatrey Sopan Khosle (47), has told the Vakola police that he was frustrated with his wife as she had eloped four times from his house in the past.According to the Vakola police officers, Khosle had been married to Parvati 15 years ago and had two children – Kirti (13) and Vaishnav (12) – who stayed with them at the Sitabai wadi in Vakola. The officers said that at 1.30 am, they received a call from a woman named Swapna Shinde about the murder. The police reached the spot and arrested Khosle. Shinde, who is a relative of Khosle and stays next door, told the police in her statement that 1 am, her mother woke her up and asked her to check on the Khosles as they could hear screams and children crying. “Shinde told us that she assumed that the couple had been fighting as usual. However, when she reached the door she heard Parvati screaming,” said Vinayak Mulay, Senior Police Inspector (SPI) of Vakola police station.

teenager has been arrested from suburban Goregaon for allegedly making hoax phone calls, claiming to be a terrorist and having planted explosives at different places across the city, police said. The caller has been identified as Masoom Shaikh (19) who was picked from Goregaon on Wednesday night and handed over to Azad Maidan police station for making hoax calls to police control room, sending the police department into a tizzy. During the interrogation, Shaikh stated that he had made the calls for enjoying the thrill, to understand how swiftly the police responds to the situation and that he is not associated with any terror organisation.

After seeing blood stains on Khosle's clothes, Shinde immediately dialed the police helpline number for women (103). Police officers reached the spot and broke open the door to find Parvati's throat slit with a sickle and more than 15 injury marks on her body. “We arrested Khosle for murder. In his statement, Khosle has said that he had been frustrated with her as she had not been paying any attention to him and his kids. Parvati had eloped from his house four times with other men. Khosle had lodged a missing complaint last month after which the ladies'

wing of the Vakola division had located her and got her back,” said Mulay. Khosle told the police that his kids were asleep after they returned from Pune last night. He had sent the two away when their mother had gone missing.Khosle noticed that Parvati was also asleep and picked up the sickle and attacked her. Parvati then woke up and began defending herself. “Khosle made more than 15 cuts on her body and chopped off her throat when Kirti and Vaishnav got up and witnessed the entire incident,” added Mulay.

According to the crime branch officials, Shaikh had on Monday called on the Mumbai Police helpline number 100 thrice, using three different mobile sim cards. Shaikh introduced himself as a terrorist and said that he had planted explosives at Film City in Goregaon, Mahim, Khar, Bandra, Santacruz and Mulund, resulting in panic in the department. Frantic search was carried out at all these places but no suspicious object was found, police said adding that an FIR was registered at the Azad Maidan police station in this regard. With the help of human intelligence and technical support, the police reached Shaikh last night. The officer added that Shaikh was subsequently handed over to Azad Maidan police which placed him under arrest.

he Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, spends Rs.15.82 lakh per month on Public Relation (PR) activities and has appointed a PR firm as a part of the image building exercise during the Lok Sabha Elections. This was revealed in a query under the Right to Information (RTI) filed by RTI activist Anil Galgali, who sought to know the details of the payments made to the PR Agency by MMRDA. In a reply to the query, MMRDA Joint Project Director Dilip Kavatkar informed Galgali that MMRDA had appointed a PR Agency namely M/s Ad Factors Pvt. Ltd. for a period of six months and paid Rs.39,57,972 for a period from January 2014 to March 2014 with Rs.7,86,520 being the balance with MMRDA. “The agency has been appointed for execution of communication strategy for various projects implemented and executed by the authority in public by various ways,” said Kavatkar, adding that there is no specific instruction from the Chief Minister of Maharashtra with regard to appointing a PR Agency. Speaking to the ADC, Galgali said, “During 2005 to 2011, the MMRDA spend nearly Rs.4 crore to appoint

three different PR agencies. I had complained to the MMRDA and since then they discontinued the agency after the end of the contract period. Now, I have again written a complaint to the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary and the MMRDA Commissioner urging that the MMRDA is a Public Authority and they already have a Public Relation Department (PR), so there is no need for appointing another Private PR Firm and wasting public funds. In fact, the MMRDA now has become a separate beat in every media house and they give best coverage to all projects related to the MMRDA. This PR agency has also been provided office premises within the MMRDA headquarters free of cost.” An officer of the MMRDA, who wished not to be named, said, “The appointment of a private PR agency in Public Offices is a routine trend followed nowadays in many government companies. Some of the PR agencies are hired with a specific project. An indoor PR department may sometimes have to deal with several projects lined up with the MMRDA. However, the private PR agency appoints specific persons to handle the MMRDA project who do not work on any other clients for their parent company for that limited period.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

Ponder awhile… “Pornography is the instruction. Rape is the practice, battered women are the practice, and battered children are the practice.” — Gloria Steinem

Does BJP too consider rape as natural? I

N Parliament, when the UPA was in power, during a debate on the required, suitable rape laws was being held, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh opposed them. It is no wonder then, only recently he said while reacting to the series of gruesome rape cases taking place in his state that ‘boys will be boys’ and such things do happen. The SP leaders do not seem to be worried in the least that gruesome, savage rapes are occurring in the state and the occurrence of rape on such a large scale was natural. Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, his father and uncle do not seem to be worried much about the crime taking place in their state. They put the blame on the media which was publishing porn stuff: it was their strong opinion that this had a big impact on the minds of the young. Is it any wonder then that in Uttar Pradesh there is no fear at all and the young and the old think that committing rape is ‘quite natural’. The weird justification of rape by the three Yadav leaders has put women in great danger. And a most incredible happening is seen in BJP-ruled state Madhya Pradesh. the home minister of the state has said that rape cases should not be a matter for worry: it is a natural occurrence. It is wrong that a big fuss is being made out of increasing number of rape cases. There is nothing to be worried about the rape situation in UP. He sided completely with Mulayam Singh and chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and said that they are being wrongly harassed by the media. His startling statement makes one think the BJP too is holding the same view on rape as Mulayam Singh and his party. What one would like to know is whether the BJP high command holds similar views. Does it also think that minor girls — 12 and 14 years old — can be gangraped and later hanged from a tree? Does the BJP also think that a woman can be gangraped and acid poured into her mouth and killed. And does BJP also hold the view that a girl can be raped and set on fire? If the home minister of Madhya Pradesh has spoken against the party view, he should be immediately sacked. And then, is it also possible that the BJP does not consider rape as a crime?

FTER having been critical of Narendra Modi for a long time, the media seems to be having second thoughts. The Hindustan Times said the BJP is now in a commanding position and needs no one to prop it up. Calling the elections “the mother of all” the paper said “the quantum of victory means that the NDA will face no real opposition for a very long time.” As the paper saw it, “it goes to the party’s credit that once having chosen Mr. Modi as the Prime Ministerial candidate, it gave him a free hand to fashion the campaign as he wanted. The paper said that “for the Congress this election has probably been one of the rudest wake-up calls it has got in a very long time” considering that “it has to get away from the old style of politics, of citing the families sacrifices, of dining out on past glories.” “India” said the paper ,” has changed but clearly the Congress has not.” As for Modi, it said: “The challenges before Mr. Modi now is to live up to the huge expectations of him. He will need the finest financial brains available to bring the economy back on track. If he does that “then half the battle will have been won.”

Governance in India The Telegraph (May 17) said the BJP victory is “without doubt of Mr. Modi’s own making”. That means, the paper said “Mr. Modi is free of possible pressures... to make policy without fear or prejudice (and) will have no alibis for future.” The paper noted that “it is obvious that the governance of the country is in a mess and the popular verdict rejecting the Congress and the United Progressive Alliance only underlines this.” Continuing it said: “The rusted iron of inactivity and procrastination has pierced the soul of governance in India. Mr. Modi’s past ideological baggage will pull him towards temples whereas the times require that he goes towards what India’s first Prime Minister referred to as “the temples of modern India.” Mr. Modi must liberate private enterpreneurship, not religious faith but the faith that governs the act of investment.” Pointing out that the election result is “an act of extreme trust” the paper said “India expects Mr. Modi to honour this trust”. It added: “The time for words is over; now deeds must match the rhetoric.” Business Line (May 19) quoted Narendra Modi as saying that “there is one medicine for

all the problems of the nation and that medicine is development.” The paper said that “the first priority for Modi’s government should be governance itself.” That, it said, “would need not only clear policy vision, but also the empowering of all arms of the government, especially the bureaucracy.” It added: “An agreement on the Goods and Services Tax is almost there, the first industrial corridor is ‘shovel ready’ and the framework of a New Direct Tax Code has already

MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath been worked out. What is needed is quick implementation on these fronts, as well as decisive action to undo some mistakes of the past.” The paper said tough decisions on subsidies and energy prices will also have to be taken and the markets already think that Modi will deliver on these fronts. It is time, the paper said “to live up to these expectations.” The Asian Age (May 17) said “powered by a well-oiled RSS organisational network in key states” and Modi’s own dynamic campaign” the BJP has swept to an unprecedented victory... beating its own expectations and creating a historic first for itself.” The paper noted that the BJP “has breached the pattern of coalition politics in the country” and added that one hopes that “communalisation of politics is not resorted to in the days to come. Mr. Modi as the paper saw it promised “greater economic and infrastructure development in all parts of the country” and warned that Modi should “naturally expect to be judged by his performance as PM.” It said: “This expectation can be met if his political, social and economic policies are even-handed and the cultural orientation of his government not tilted against the minor-

Music is the fountain of knowledge within itself T

HE gradual progress of all creation form a lower to a higher evolution, its change from one aspect to another, is shown as in music where a melody is transposed from one key into another. The harmony of human nature, and the human tendency to attraction and repulsion, are like the effect of the consonant and dissonant intervals in music. In tenderness of heart the tone turns into a half-tone; and with the breaking of the heart the tone breaks into microtones. The more tender the heart becomes, the fuller the tone becomes; the harder the heart grows, the more dead it sounds. Each note, each scale, and each strain expires at the appointed time; and at the end of the soul’s experience here the finale comes; but the impression remains, as a concert in a dream, before the radiant vision of the consciousness. With music of the Absolute, the bass, the undertone, is going on continuously; but on the surface beneath the various keys of all the

instruments of nature, music, the undertone is hidden and subdued. Every being with life comes to the surface and again returns whence it came, as each note has its return to the ocean of sound. The undertone of this existence overwhelms all. The mystery of sound is mysticism; the harmony of life is religion. The knowledge of

MATTER & SPIRIT vibrations is metaphysics, and the analysis of atoms science; and their harmonious grouping is art. The rhythm of form is poetry, and the rhythm of sound is music. This shows that music is the art of arts and the science of all sciences; and it contains the fountain of all knowledge within itself. Music is called a divine or celestial art, no only because of its use in religion and devotion, and because it is in itself a universal religion, but because of its fineness in

ity communities.” The paper concluded by saying that “the RSS factor is also likely to weigh on the incoming Modi Government” and in the circumstances he should “stand up to extra-constitutional demands” like building the Ram Temple in Ayodhya”.

Modi is Statue of Victory DNA (May 17) said the verdict of this election should also bring to an end Modi demonology on the one hand and Modi eulogies on the other. Noting that the new Prime Minister “is neither an angel nor a demon” the paper said “the need is to judge him as an elected politician for his acts of commission and omission, give praise where it is due and unsparing criticism where it is necessary.” He should not remain the focus any more and it is time to go back to work and keep the country going, it said in the end. Gopalakrishna Gandhi writing in Hindustan Times (May 17) said Narendra Modi is the Statue of Victory. He said: “Modi was not just the face of the 2014 elections, it was the only face, full, up-front. All others were profiles. Narendra Modi will be the government, the government will be Narendra Modi.” Not everybody was happy with Narendra Modi as shown by Kuldip Nayar, writing in The Radical Humanist (May). Writing some time before the final results were out Nayar expressed his contempt for opinion polls saying “their tally is unreliable because there is not even a ripple, much less a wave, in favour of Modi in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Odisha.” A professional Modi critic according to Nayar, Modi “continues to use development as a cover to hide his communal agenda.” As Nayar saw the situation “the society does not want a person whose politics is divisive and whose thinking may well be authoritarian.” As he put it, “Modi’s complicity in the antiMuslim riots in 2002 cannot be hidden even though a magistrate’s court in Gujarat has given him a clean chit.” Wrote Nayar: “I hope Modi does not head the next government.” Economic and Political Weekly (May 17) gave credit to Modi’s success to nearly one lakh RSS group leaders and six lakh swayamsevaks from 42,000 units spread across the country working full time to ensure BJP’s victory. The point was made by Badri Narayan who teaches at the G.B. Pant Social Sciences Institute, Allahabad. comparison with all other arts and sciences. Every sacred scripture, holy picture or spoken word, produces the impression of its identity upon the morrow of the soul; but music stands before the soul without producing any impression of this objective world, in either name or form, thus preparing the soul to realize the Infinite. Recognizing this, the Sufi names music Giza-I Ruh, the food of the soul, and uses it as a source of spiritual perfection; for music fans the fire of the heart, and the flame arising from it illumines the soul. The Sufi derives much more benefit from music in his meditations that from anything else. His devotional and meditative attitude makes him responsive to music, which helps him in his spiritual unfoldment. The consciousness, by the help of music, first frees itself from the body and them from the mind. This once accomplished, only one step more is needed to attain spiritual perfection. – Hazrat Inayat Khan

Road accidents must end

the death of a politician or a celebrity to make changes in the law of the land? We often come across incidents of making changes in infrastructure only after people in power have went through hell or suffered due to it. Our vehicle and safety laws are outdated while vehicles have multiplied over time. Roads and highways have increased while the signalling systems are outdated. Red light vehicles are involved in most of the crashes because they take advantage of their VIP status and end up in fatal accidents. We need stricter rules that are updated with the times we live in. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

CLARION CALL: Gopinath Munde, Union Minister for Rural Development, died in a car crash on Tuesday, raising questions over road safety in India. APROPOS ‘Lok Nayak departs’ (ADC, June 4), indeed it is a big blow to Maharashtra as aptly indicated by the state government. The new cabinet minister with the Rural Development portfolio, Gopinath Munde’s sudden death by such an unfortunate car crash is certainly unfathomable. The statistics reveal that estimated 337 deaths occur in India by road accidents daily, which is seriously alarming. In the capital, if a minister meets with such a fatal accident, one may assume how precariously the safety standards are low in India. In fact, the traffic regulations need to be monitored with strictest law enforcers to avoid any such accident in the future to ensure such unwarranted accidents involving loss of precious human lives. Maharashtra has certainly lost a stalwart, who could have possibly become the chief minister of the state. May the soul of this hard working and great upright Indian politician rest in peace.

IT is sad and heart breaking that we take notice of the system’s short coming and our own pathetic approach only after the “sacrifice” of a celebrity or a high profile individual. Lakhs of people get killed in road related accidents every year but then it becomes a topic of discussion (and sadly it never goes beyond that) only when someone like Gopinath ji gets killed. Shouldn’t this now be taken as a mishap after which there won’t be any blame game but serious measures to deal with these road accidents? Firstly the penalties should not just be made more stringent and heavy fines imposed on lane breaking and signal jumping but they should actually be implemented irrespective of who the offender is. Secondly, a strict emergency lane be maintained so that in case of an accident minimum time is wasted in reaching the spot and transporting the injured to the nearest trauma centre. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai Thirdly we have to educate our children not just by preaching but

Preventing landslides

ON the eve of the first Parliamentary session of the Mode government, I would like to wish him all the best. We expect Mode to shun the UPA’s ‘brazen model’ of functioning with their factotums defending the indefensible and turn a new leaf by earnestly working out policies on the economic front to bring down the retail inflation drastically on top priority before taking up issues of vital concern in a systematic manner. Mode will have to deal with the huge scams like the 2G and Coalgate making Manmohan Singh and Chidambaram depose before the CBI as well as JPC as demanded by the main accused A.

THE landslides in metropolitan Mumbai are just waiting on the hills for the rains to come down. As usual, the BMC has started its annual exercise of sticking evacuation notices in the slums which are prone to landslide occurrence. The corporation, which has systematically noted down all the slide-prone areas in the island-city - over 300 of them – it does not go beyond these futile warnings because the slumdwellers have nowhere to go. Instead, it needs to take urgent measures to prevent the landslides by removing the lose boulders from the top of the hills and stabilising the susceptible hill-slopes by spray-

IS it a mere coincidence or something else? Within 24 hours of the car crash that killed Union Minister Gopinath Munde, the vehicle carrying the RSS chief was dashed by another car from behind. Therefore, the demand from some quarters about a CBI inquiry into the mishap merits attention. — Arun Malankar, Santacruz

GOPINATH Munde’s death in a tragic road accident has taken away a leader of the masses who died when he was at the peak of his political career to make an impact on the lives of the poor. However, media has gone hammer and tongs over safety features in a vehicle like compulsory seatbelts in a car for passengers after his death. Does our country need

GOPINATH Munde’s untimely death to a road accident opened up a pandora’s box about the safety on the roads in India. Every three minutes we come across an accidental death on the roads of our country. The main reason for this is rash and negligent driving. Early morning driving is the most dangerous as the drivers fail to follow traffic rules when signals are nonoperational and the roads appear to be empty. To avoid road accidents, proper lighting arrangements should be made. Solar energy can be utilised to provide continuous power supply. With headlights obstructing the view of the driver, we come across accidents during the night hours. It is time to check traffic rule violations of jumping signals, breaking ‘No Entry’ signs and over-speeding within the city limits. Stipulated traffic guidelines are ignored and that causes fatal road accidents. The main reason for the accidents are rash driving, bad state of the roads and failure to follow traffic rules. The death of a minister in a road accident should prove to be a game changer and both the police and the drivers should aim to prevent road accidents in the best way possible.

#1: pick a VeNue First things first — book a venue as soon as possible to get the best price and to ensure that you don’t have to compromise on your dates. Even though the following venues don’t have set deadlines for booking dates, you can only organise the rest of your wedding once you’ve booked one. So, this should be the first thing you zero in on.

stone Water eco resort, Goa: For a scenic wedding, Stone Water Eco Resort, located in Goa is your perfect bet. They have a variety of options to choose from — from a two-day all inclusive package that starts from `12.5 lakhs, to a sea-view jetty package (`55,000 onwards), with beautiful views of the turquoise water. They also have pool side and bar venues that are perfect for wedding rituals. On most of their packages, the venue charges are waived off if you book 24 cottages. price range `25,000 to over 12 lakhs, depending on your preferences contact www.stonewaterecoresort.com soul soufflé, Goa: Another venue in Goa, Soul Soufflé is split into a cocktail bar and an al-fresco section that can accommodate up to 250 people. The resort is situated on the banks of the Uddear waterfall and has won awards for its Goan seafood, kebabs and Mughlai dishes. This place is perfect if you want a wedding with a rustic Goan charm. The destination also offers a complimentary, candid wedding photographer.

Music A wedding needs good music, so if your venue doesn’t offer this along with your package (some do, so check in advance!), or if you want a special wedding band, S.M Creations are a good place to call. They offer a Punjabi and Koli band for Indian weddings. The Punjabi band is priced between `12,000 and `25,000, depending on the amount of people in the band. The Koli band is priced at `18,000. They also have an option of punjabi dhol for which they charge `5,000 for two dhols. Bookings depend on how open their schedule is, so get in touch soon! An amount of `5,000 needs to be paid in advance as the booking fee. contact www.musicalentertainment.in >> Sun N Sand is located on the beach

>> Sun N Sand provides a number of wedding services

Bridal Makeup A bride’s makeup enhances her entire outfit, so it needs to be perfect, without being overdone. Artist Zubair Shaikh, who has done makeup for several celebrity weddings, charges `20,000 per session for a destination wedding. The package includes makeup, hair and sari draping. For two sessions, the same package will cost you `40,000. You have to pay 50% of the amount in advance as booking fee. price `20,000 onwards contact www.zubairshaikh.net

>> Pictures like these are what you can expect from KnotInFocus

continued from pg 13 «

#2: Get a PHotoGRaPHeR Next, pick your photographer. Photographers are usually booked very early, so make sure you have enough time to book the one you want!

knotInFocus: If you’re planning a November wedding, you’re not going to be able to book these out-of-the-box photographers. Anand Rathi, from KnotInFocus tells us, “November is a packed month and most of it is already gone. We advise couples to get in touch with us at least six months in advance.” The quirky photographers offer a full range of services that include a prewedding shoot, wedding photography, wedding film, delivery of the photos on blu-ray and an album. Founded by Abhinav Shah and Anand Rathi in 2013, their pictures are inspired by the grandeur of Bollywood, adding a little filmi drama to your wedding album. Anand adds, “We almost always do destination weddings and have shot at popular destinations for

Indian marriages in India as well as overseas.” If you can, you should definitely book them for your big day! Get in touch Six months in advance Price range From `3.5 to `5.5 lakhs per day Contact www.knotinfocus.in or email info@knotinfocus.in

the Cheesecake Project: Stuti Sakhalkar, the energetic photographer behind the venture tells us, “November bookings should have started in April, so step on it and finalise your photographer before he/she gets booked. November this year has relatively fewer prime dates than last year and isn’t as packed as December is this year, but dates are filling up!” Stuti explains that over the last two years of shooting weddings, she’s realised that every photographer shoots in a different way. She tells us about her own process, explaining, “I like to photograph emotions; nervous brides, shy grooms, emotional mothers, fathers who try their best to hide their tears, mastikhor siblings and cousins and a mad gang of friends. My intention is to

#4 Get YoUR oUtFIt What are you going to get married in?! While actually getting your outfit won’t take time, deciding on the perfect dress/ trousseau/ sari, will. Also, designers are often swamped with back-toback orders, so get in touch now.

Michelle Rodrigues’ Bridal Wear: Michelle was always fascinated by fashion, women’s wear and creating her own designs, making her our seamstress of choice if you want a wedding gown for your big day. We love her work simply because of the sharp aesthetics that feature in all her designs. “I like working on wedding gowns because they offer a wider canvas to play with. Every bride brings a unique element through with her personality — and that helps me to extend it into a fun experience for them,” says Michelle, when we asked her why she chose this particular stream of design. Most of her outfits are in silk, featuring Chantilly, Chinese and Swiss lace. Although the making of the dress takes 6-8 weeks, she suggests that you contact her six months in advance. “The construction of the garment takes only 6-8 weeks, but planning starts months in advance,” she says. However, if you are pressed for time, they do cater to emergency brides and can whip up a dress in around 15 days as well. Get in touch Six months in advance Price range Approximately `40,000 to `50,000, depending on the complexity of the design Contact 9920087573

ss Homme: Grooms needn’t worry about their trousseau, as SS Homme has launched a wedding

give the family pictures that will make them recall the day as it was. Also, there are so many things that happen which they are unaware of and it’s great to be able to show them what they missed out on while being in the middle of all the hustle and bustle.” They also do destination weddings, telling us that they broaden the canvas for photographers, as the couple and family are usually a lot more relaxed. “If the people are happy, the pictures are happy,” Stuti adds. Now is a great time to book them since they’re offering a 15% discount on the candid photography billing for weddings and engagements from June to September. There is also a 10% discount on the candid photography billing for weddings in November-December-January, if you book before June 30, so hurry! Get in touch As much in advance as you can, six months is a good figure to go by Price range Approximately `30,000 onwards, depending on services. Contact www.facebook.com/TheCheese cakeProject or email stuti@thecheesecakeproject.com

When it comes to visiting cards, there are literally, hundreds of options. But, if you’d like a rough idea, you’ll probably be choosing between three price points. For example, Vadra Cards (www.vadra.in) offers high-end cards that cost `150/card onwards. Brands such as Saifee Wedding Cards (www.saifeeweddingcards.com) on the other hand are a much cheaper option at `11-18/card. They are perfect if you want the trademark wedding look without having to stretch your budget. Brands such as Ikon Cards on the other hand, offer cards with an ethnic touch and are priced upwards of `100 per card.

Now that you have your venue, you want to make sure that it looks perfect for your dream wedding. Picking floral arrangements and getting everything you want together takes time, so don’t wait longer than six months to do so.

Marry Me – Wedding stylists & House of Flowers: If you have ever visited Marry Me, (the store nestled inside Candies in Bandra) and have found it difficult to control splurging on the merchandise, you should pick Marry Me – Wedding Stylists, for all your décor needs and House of Flowers, for all your floral needs. “Right from decorating your house for a function such as the mehendi or organising the centre pieces for your reception, we cater to all wedding flower requirements,” says Jarett D’Abreo, co-founder of the companies. We personally love their style and while they do cater to last minute bookings, it is best to contact them in advance. Get in touch Six months to a year in advance Prices range `500 onwards for the flowers and `2 to `3 lakh for décor, depending on the complexity of the décor chosen. Contact 65248821

Perfect Décor: Perfect Décor is a one-stop shop for all your décor needs. They handle both flowers and décor, but you do need to get in touch with them in advance to make sure that you get the exact arrangements that you want. “While we can put the décor and flowers together on short notice, we work our magic best when we have time to plan everything down to the last detail,” a spokesperson tells us. #5 FInaLIse tHe CateRInG Most caterers will take bookings even a week before your wedding, but if you want to make sure that nothing goes awry and that you get the food you’ve set your heart on, we suggest getting started by blocking your dates now. Here are a few options that you can choose from:

Royal treat events: Royal Treat Events are a good caterering option when you don’t have much time. They take bookings even 15 days before, so they are perfect for last-minute weddings. They have several buffet options with the minimum price starting from `150 per guest. They also have a provision of regional food, depending on the location of your wedding. On confirmation, you will have to pay 70% of the total amount in advance, a week before the wedding. Contact 9702900276 Deshpande Caterers: These caterers allow you to make a booking as per your own convenience. The buffet is vegetarian only and starts at a price of `400-`500 per guest for a destination wedding and `200 per guest for a local wedding. Cake Whether anyone remembers the décor or not, the one thing they will remember is a good cake. Though not all weddings have cakes, if yours includes one, you can get in touch with Deliciae Cakes. His work is full of imagination and vibrancy. Nishikant tells us, “We all live within a circle, and throughout life, everyone creates more circles to bury themselves in. « store review: zoya & Dvar

Dazzle like a DiamonD Not everyone can afford to buy themselves diamond jewellery, but a little gawking never hurt anyone, as Yamini Walia found out on her visit to newly opened diamond boutique, Zoya

A

diamond is truly a girl’s best friend, so it’s no surprise that nothing makes us happier than visiting a diamond boutique, even if it is just for some window shopping. That sums up my experience at Zoya, the luxury diamond boutique from the House of Tata, in Khar. This is their second store, with the first one housed at Warden Road. Since I visited them a mere three days after it opene d, the store was still adorned by flowers and a red carpet which definitely made me feel like a celebrity. This outlet is larger than their first one. It consists of two floors, where jewellery is aesthetically displayed and a basement which is used more as a storage space. A large chandelier, placed between the two floors adds to Zoya’s luxurious charm. As soon as I entered the store, I was welcomed wit h a cup of coffee and chocolates. It may not have been champagne, but diamonds, coffee and chocolates is a brilliant combination. After finishing my cup of coffee, I walked around the store to check out their collection. Himanshu, an employee at Zoya, deftly explained the details about each and every collection. The first collection I saw was Celestium. As the name suggests, the range revolves around c elestial objects. The collection is quite contemporary and the exquisite jewels wrought in diamonds and other precious stones, blew me away. Next, I viewed a new collection called Fire, which was impressive as well. It consisted of earrings, necklaces and rings designed based on the theme of fire. The collection was embellished with sapphires, radiant gold and exquisite diamonds. Banaras, their most sought after collection, included pieces

that I couldn’t take my eyes off. An absolutely breathtaking collection, Banaras articulates the spirit of the legendary city, crafting it into luxurious pieces spun in diamonds and gold. Jewels of the crown, as the name suggests, symbolises royalty. I tried a piece from this collection, studded with rubies in the shape of a crown and it looked stunning. The Egyptian c ollection reinterprets the legacy of Egypt in vivid colours. You could see a hint of Egypt, namely Egyptian mummies, in every earring and neck piece that constituted the collection. Apart from these collections, there were kundan and polki sets on display on the first floor; these are sure to be a hit with brides-to-be. There was also a Dance of the White Peacock collection which is inspired by the white peacock’s dance. Their Espana and Greece collections borrow inspiration from the cultures of both the countries, whether it’s the intricacies of the Spanish fan, the unbridled passion of the Flamenco or the legends of Greek gods, goddesses, fearless warriors and epic battles. All the collections display high-quality craftsmanship. All-in-all, the diamond boutique offers designs for women of all ages. You can pick up any piece and I am sure you won’t be disappointed. Personally, I wanted to own everything displayed in the store. The average price of jewellery at Zoya is around `50,000, which is quite reasonable when it comes to diamonds. The new store is definitely a must-visit! WheRe Zoya,Ground Floor, Devnibru building, 369 Linking Road, Khar (W) contact 26488577

launches:

Fashion designer Rozina Vishram has launched an exclusive, one-of-a-kind bespoke women’s wear brand called Rozina. The brand gives you the option to pick from an array of fine fabrics, details, accents, colours, cuts, styles and silhouettes and customise them according to your own creative vision. We love the detailing on the red floor-length anarkali. Whether at a friend’s wedding or a family function, this anarkali will definitely help you grab all the attention. hink of an art gallery hosting an exhibition of paintings by several artists — from unique styles to a plethora of colours, a group show will usually feature that and much more. But, why are we talking about art and exhibitions in a review about a fashion store? It’s because the concept of DVAR is quite similar. Enter through the palace-like doors (interesting fact: the doors to DVAR were actually salvaged and restored from a palace) and you’ll come across several different corners, each housing a separate designer. As Vijayta Gandhi, fashionista and brain behind DVAR, took us through the store, it was easy to see her love and passion for fashion — and that is something that sets DVAR apart from other clothing stores. All the collections at DVAR have been personally curated by Vijayta and she does a good job of ensuring that there is a variety of styles, cuts and materials. One of the USPs of DVAR is that almost half of their designs are exclusive to this label — even though you might find the same designer at another multi-designer store, you can still expect unique designs. Most of the designs at DVAR are bridal and festive wear, but they also have few pieces that are perfect for everyday attire. You can look forward to trying on clothes from designers such as Aarti Vijay Gupta, Arpita Mehta, Deepika Govind, Dolly J, Jayanti Reddy, Sangeeta Kilachand, Shivani Tijori and Vidhi Kejriwal. Their bridal wear is the biggest attraction at DVAR and they feature some of the best embroidery work that I have ever seen. The bridal wear comes in basic colours of red and orange, while their festive wear impressed me with a variety of options, both in terms of colour as well as work. Another reason that you should pay DVAR a visit is their couture shoe section. They promise you the best fit possible by customising shoes and designs according to the size of

>> The concept of DVAR is similar to an art gallery as it houses collections by several designers your feet. The same concept applies to bags — most of which feature certified swarovski crystals — which again, can be customised according to your preferences. The jewellery was another part of the store that held my attention. They feature unique, futuristic designs that I think to carry off, you’d need to have an inherent sense of style and a complementing wardrobe. But, that is something that Vijayta seems more than happy to you help you out with. Each section of the store has at least one or two items that will leave you thinking, “Wow, I thought it would be more expensive.” The prices, ranging from `7,500 to `4 lakhs, aren’t cheap, but the pieces are good value for money. Overall, DVAR is an exciting fashion destination with variety, reasonable prices, exclusivity and a fun shopping experience. The experience of being shown around the store by Vijayta, in itself, makes DVAR a store worth checking out. Where Hill Crest, Opp. HSBC Bank, JVPD, Andheri (W) contact 8655005536

A half-hearted effort

Saltwater Café, a restaurant that is a personal favourite, has a new summer menu to boast of, but it fails to impress. Shirley Mistry tells you more

W

hen a restaurant like Saltwater Café introduces a new summer menu, you can’t help but be excited. Their fare is consistently good, so a new menu sounded like it would be nothing short of delightful. However, it was only after looking through the menu, that we realised that it isn’t as much of a summer menu, as additions of a few summer themed dishes to the menu. After checking with the server about what these new offerings were, we started off with the Feta, Melons, Roasted Almonds & Balsamic Salad (`290) and the Braised Beets, Plum & Brie salad (`250), both of which were outstanding. The melon & feta salad was devoid of almonds, but the juicy melons and the sharp feta were a delightful combination, with the balsamic drizzle adding an extra depth of flavour. The braised beet salad fared better in terms of texture. However, after this, our meal went downhill. We tried the Poha Crusted Prawns (`390), Potato, Ricotta & Pea Pesto Gnocchi (`290) and the Smoked Salmon with Citrus Elements (`550). The prawns weren’t anything to write home about. They tasted like tempura prawns with a poha crust, instead of the usual semolina. The gnocchi was a good attempt, but it lacked texture and felt too pasty after a few forkfuls. The smoked salmon fared slightly better, but the citrus elements were so far and few between, that it was as good as not having them on your plate. For our main course, we sampled the Chevre Potato Chop, with nicoise vegetables and orange zest (`440) and the 8-Hour Braised Lamb, with jowar, pomegranates and tamarind (`580). The potato chop was literally a large lump of mashed potatoes, coated in semolina and pan fried. Unfortunately, they were absolutely bland, with a dollop of orange zest infused cream cheese in its centre, which did not go well with the potatoes and seemed like it had been stolen off someone’s dessert! The vegetables accompanying it were lacklustre as well. The braised lamb fared better, but the scarce scattering of pomegranate

seeds didn’t do a good job of balancing out the tartness, which came from a heavy handed portioning of tamarind. However, the meat was cooked very well and was melt-in-the-mouth. We then ordered the Lemon Pie (`230) to try to salvage our meal. Although the lemony flavour was appealing, the eggs used to make the custard had split, giving it a grainy texture akin to scrambled eggs, instead of a silky smooth one. On the whole, the summer menu was quite a let-down and we wish that they had put more thought and effort into it. Visit to try their lovely salads, but for all other intents and purposes, stick to dishes from their old menu (the John Dory is excellent) and you won’t be as disappointed as we were! he heat has been boring into our energy reserves this summer and not a day goes by without us hankering for something chilled and refreshing. So, the Good Juicery’s new range of sparkling juices came at a good time. The brand claims to stay away from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives and the drinks are lightly carbonated and sweetened. Though the can seems small, each juice has an impressive serving of almost two glasses. The juice contains almost two servings of fruit as well, making it a better option than most carbonated options. We tried three flavours — Green Apple, Guava and Passion Fruit. As promised, the guava flavour was all natural and the carbonation was minimal, so we didn’t have to wrinkle our noses to escape the bubbles. We appreciate the use cane sugar instead of a fructose syrup and the vitamin C content in each juice. The green apple based soda seemed like a needlessly overpriced soda, but one sip from the chilled can was enough to counter all our assumptions. The sparkling juice was rich in flavour, without being cloyingly sweet and its perfect balance of sour and sweet made it very refreshing. The passion fruit however, was an exemplary flavour. Although you can get great guava and green apple juices if you scour through shops, a good passion fruit juice is not easy to find and even if you do, it will definitely set you back more than this can does. It may be an acquired taste for some, since it’s a little tart, but it did wonders for our taste buds. If you’re looking for a drink that’s different, refreshing and worth it’s price, this is the flavour to pick from the bunch. We were really impressed by the flavours, but at `75 for 250ml, we can’t see ourselves drinking these every day. While they are great as a mid-week pick-me-up, we may have to stick to trusty buttermilk, or a cheaper juice as a daily thirst quencher. * Visit www.goodjuicery.com to find out more

A rooftop

surprise

Dev Goswami tells you why his visit to the newly revamped rooftop café Terra, in Bandra, left him pleasantly surprised

T

erra, which used to be The Café at the Executive Enclave hotel in Bandra, recently revamped and its décor and menu. The extensive food and drink menu now makes it more of a restaurant and bar than a café. Nomenclature aside, Terra is the perfect place to go to grab a couple of drinks post-work. The all-white décor, with just candles for lighting (and small torches to read the menu) gives it a chic, relaxed vibe. The prices on the menu were the first thing that caught my attention. A 60ml drink of Bacardi will cost you `250 and considering the fact that rooftop restaurants are usually highly priced, this is a very reasonable amount. They offer the usual domestic and international spirits, along with a wine selection that is predominately Indian and Australian. We started our meal with Butter Garlic Prawns (`330) and Chicken Chili Oriental (`275). We were quite excited about the former. However, it turned out to be a disappointment, as the garlic was missing

from the sauce. The prawns were cooked well, but the lack of garlic in the butter-garlic sauce, made it an unspectacular dish. The chicken on the other hand, was a big hit with us. The flavourful meat was cooked in a spicy oriental sauce that went very well with our beer. For our main course, we opted for a Chicken Sizzler (`400) and Double Pan Fried Noodles (`250). The latter was a good dish, completely worth the price, with a generous helping of vegetables. The dish was good, but you won’t end up raving about it. The sizzler, another great dish, contained a lot of vegetables, grilled chicken breast and jasmine rice in a garlic-pepper sauce. This time, the garlic was just perfect and rice was delicious enough to eat plain. The chicken was grilled to perfection and while the dish, like most others at Terra, wasn’t exceptional, it will leave you satisfied and satiated. We ended our meal with a Black Forest cake, which unfortunately, wasn’t as good as our starters or mains. The cream was a little too thick and the texture of the cake itself a

>> Terra offers a complete dining package with good food and relaxing décor little too moist, making the combination taste like a watered down, cheap bakery version of the popular German cake. Overall, Terra turned out to be one of the better restaurants in the city in it’s price range. You won’t really be missing out on anything if you don’t visit, but a making a reservation here won’t leave you disappointed either — whatever they do, they do well enough. ndia's economic growth rate will improve to 6.2 % in current fiscal and can go up to 8 % in the next three years on back of favourable domestic and global environment, tax consultancy firm Ernst & Young (E&Y) said. "A combination of structural correction, confidence in new government and favourable global conditions could propel economic growth to beyond 8 % in three years," it said. The economic growth rate remained below 5 % for the second year in a row recording 4.7 % in 2013-14. In order to boost growth, the tax consultancy firm urged Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to hike income tax exemption limit to Rs 4 lakh and extending additional tax benefits to

small investors in the forthcoming budget in July. "These two tax incentives would boost consumption demand. This will also add to GDP," E&Y Chief Policy Advisor D K Srivastava said. He also urged the government to increase capital expenditure and undertake policy intervention to stimulate demand. "Non-inflationary stimulus could be designed to propel growth in short term. Stimulus must boost domestic demand," Srivastava said. The focus, he said, should be on driving small savings, delivering tax reforms (GST and direct taxes), encouraging FDI and restructuring government expenditure. The efforts, he added, should also be made to promote investment in infrastructure, real estate and finan-

ideocon Telecom has tied up with Chinese equipment firm Huawei Technologies for rolling out 4G network in six out of its 7 service areas. "Videocon Telecom is rolling out LTE-ready Packet Core network from Huawei in 6 telecom circles in India. This network will provide a larger data coverage and reduce the overall capex and opex leading to an improved profitability and lower costs to end users," Videocon Telecom's Director and CEO Arvind Bali said in a statement. Both companies had earlier run into dispute over payments when Videocon Telecom lost its 21 licences along with 101 others after the Supreme Court judgement in February 2012. Now, the issue has been resolved amicably. "We hold a global leadership position in Packet Core networks and are very happy to partner with Videocon Telecom to bring this cutting-edge technology," Huawei India CEO Cai Liqun said. Last year Videocon Telecom had announced to explore partnership possibility with Nokia Solutions Network (formerly Nokia Siemens Network) but finally opted for the Chinese equipment maker. NSN manages Punjab operations of Videocon where the mobile service provider firm has permit only for 2G services at present. Videocon has permits to roll out 4G services in Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh East and West where it won spectrum afresh in November 2012. "The adoption of GST is expected to positively impact the business environment with better management of multiple indirect taxes, removal of cascading effect of taxes and widening of the tax base," E&Y Tax & Regulatory (Policy Advisor) Satya Poddar said. To boost private consumption and investment, E&Y suggested a reduction in policy rate by 0.50 % in a quarter and one % during the course of the year. Currently both CPI and WPI inflation are focused largely on fruits, vegetables, protein-based items and fuel, E&Y said, adding recent appreciation in rupee and the near completion of adjustment in diesel and electricity prices will have a positive bearing in price situation.

he government is likely to hike natural gas rates from July 1, after a new price formulation is approved by the Cabinet, a top Oil Ministry source said yesterday. The first increase in natural gas prices, based on a formula suggested by a panel headed by C Rangarajan, was to be originally effective from April 1. However, before a new rate could be unveiled, general elections were announced and its implementation got deferred. "It is an issue which needs attention. Decision needs to be taken before July 1," the source said. The ministry had on April 21 told Reliance Industries, who was made to sell natural gas from its eastern offshore KG-D6 fields at the old rate of USD 4.2 per million British thermal unit even after its term had expired, that a new rate would be announced by July 1."We had told RIL that the earliest possible date for applying the revised price is July 1 and so we have to announce a new price before that," he said. The Ministry will announce a new rate once its gets clarity on implementation of the Ranagarajan formula, which would double the gas price, from the top. "Perhaps we may have to go to the Cabinet... We would have more clarity on the issue by next week, say by Tuesday," the source said. The ministry is expected to make a presentation on the issues pertaining to the oil and gas sector to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in next few days and a clear direction on how to proceed on gas pricing will emerge after that. "Yes, a decision on gas pricing is on top of the items needing decision in the presentation," he said. If the Prime Minister gives a go ahead for announcing a new rate as per the Rangarajan formula approved by the previous government in December last year, an announcement will be made forthwith. However, if it is felt that the formula suggested needs some adjustment or the government needs to take steps to protect interests of

Before being voted to power, the BJP had stated that it would like to review the formula if it comes to power. Rangarajan panel had suggested pricing of all domestically produced natural gas at an average of the prices of imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) into India and the weighted average of gas prices in North America, Europe and Japan. The price formula was to be effective on April 1, 2014.

"Within the region, Internet usage rates span a broad range, from as low as 17.4% of India's population this year, to nearly eight in 10 in South Korea," it added. — Business Desk with inputs from PTI

By A Business Reporter

“A

s per the provisions of the Companies Act, 2013 any company having a net worth of rupees 500 crores or more or a turnover of rupees 1,000 crores or more or a net profit of rupees 5 crores or more should mandatorily spend 2% of their net profits per fiscal on CSR activities. Given the mandate it is estimated that nearly 16,500 companies will invest Rs 22,000 crores towards CSR. It is a welcome move for India which is undergoing rapid transformation from developing economy to an advanced economy. The move is expected to bring about “inclusive growth” of one and all”, said Vijay Ganapathy, Advisory Services, Ernst and Young during a panel discussion on “Decoding the Companies Act 2013 with a focus on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for Indian and Foreign Companies” jointly organised by MVIRDC World Trade Centre, All India Association of Industries and Idobro. Karon Shaiva, Chief Impact Officer & MD, Idobro Impact Solutions and the moderator of the panel discussion persuaded the panelists to throw more light on the CSR responsibilities of corporates in the Companies Act 2013. Enumerating on the implementation part of the CSR Act panelist Ajit Pattnaik, General Manager & Head-Corporate Sustainability, Tata Housing Development Company Ltd said the broad categories towards CSR activities under the Schedule 7 include education, special education, health care, preventive healthcare, water, sanitation, training in sports, art, culture, rural development projects, etc. Also, the schedule is not restrictive towards geographical boundaries of the beneficiaries. Vijay Kalantri, Vice-Chairman, MVIRDC World Trade Centre and President, All India Association of Industries informed the audience that the Indian economy has traditionally engaged in CSR activities towards ensuring livelihood, food

and healthcare for all since times immemorial. As of date Corporates can adopt CSR activities in dual ways. Firstly, a standalone company can engage in CSR activities on its own. Secondly, a company can jointly under take CSR activities with an NGO, trust or civil society with a three year track record in similar activities. The Dighi Port being developed under the business acumen of Kalantri ensures free dispensaries, medicines, free education besides welfare for fisher men in and around the port area of development. Panelist Dr. Milind Antani, Partner Incharge of Social Development Practice, Nishith Desai Associates elaborated to consequences of non-compliance towards the CSR provisions. It is mandatory to comply with the 2% investment towards CSR or inform the Government the reasons for inability to engage in CSR. Any company which does not report non-compliance towards the CSR rule is liable to be charges of penalty in the bracket of Rs 50 thousand to Rs 50 lakhs. Also, the Board of Directors may be charged with imprisonment for 5 years and/or fine worth Rs 25,000. Further, Shaiva raised queries on the grey areas of the CSR Act. Kalantri updated the audience that CSR provisions cannot be merged with business activities of the corporates. Business activities include provisions which ensure sustainability and growth of a company. However, the need for the hour is to include provisions for PPP, capacity building, due diligence of NGOs in the Act. For eg. A hand wash producing company may be given the liberty to educate about cleanliness and sanitation. Thus, CSR activities are contextual issues which need to be judged on case to case basis. Secondly, Antani elaborated on NGO expenses towards skill development and compliance activities. It was concluded that NGO expenses which amount to 5% to 10% of CSR activities may be included in the CSR budget under cost overheads.

he mutual fund industry’s assets under management have crossed Rs 10 lakh crore mark in May on the back of strong capital inflows and a surge in equity markets. The assets under management (AUM) of mutual funds rose to Rs 10.11 lakh crore in May from Rs 9.45 lakh crore in April, a growth of seven per cent, according to the data available with capital market regulator Sebi. This was also the third consecutive monthly increase in AUM of country’s 45 fund houses. The AUM data for individual fund house is not being disclosed. Industry experts attributed the rise in AUM to a significant level of fund mobilisation as well as a sharp rally in equity markets. The fund houses together witnessed an inflow of Rs 1.46 lakh crore. During the month, the benchmark BSE Sensex grew nearly 1,800 points or 8%. MFs pool together money from many investors and invest it on their behalf in accordance with a stated set of objectives. These fund houses together managed assets worth Rs 8.25 lakh crore and Rs 8.13 lakh crore in March and February. The figure stood at Rs 8.26 lakh crore in January.

Gowda to turn railways into an "engine of growth" through capacity addition, developing highspeed freight network and offering services like e-business and entertainment to passengers. The proposed mega plan, to be initiated now and completed by 2029-30, is part of the vision of India becoming a seven trillion dollar economy. It will enable creation of freight capacity to handle about 50 per cent of the traffic offered by this level of the economy. The plan envisages capacity enhancements entailing investments worth USD 2.5 to 3 trillion to make the Railways an engine of growth by creating jobs across the board at various levels, boost demand for construction, steel, cement, equipment, new type of high load wagons, collapse resistant comfortable coaches, latest signaling and electrical items. It also includes opening up the railways for all types of new services for long distance passengers including e-business and entertainment as well as catering. "We have suggested to the new Railway Minister a mega plan comprising seven corridor high speed freight network for transporting goods back and forth from manufacturing to consumption centres and from all major ports within specified timeframe of 36 hours," Chairman of Assocham's Committee on Rail Transport A K Agarwal said. Besides, the industry chamber also suggested building of ultra high speed (up to 300 kmph) passenger services connecting all large and identified urban centres and turning all trunk passenger routes to four line networks effectively separating passenger from goods and services and releasing large capacities for both.

JOHNNY LEVER’S

FUNTASTIC FORTE

By Chaitanya Padukone

I

ncredible as it may sound, ace Bollywood actor-mimicstand-up comedian Johnny Lever who has returned after some 16 long years to perform live carted audiences to an emotional tearful high in his climax act, at his recent houseful stage shows in the city, convened by impresarios J.Abbas and Anuj Bajaj. The one-man-showman Johnny effectively mimicked a scene where an aged critically-ill mother battling for her life is incoherently mumbling and her grown-up son is indifferent. He says he is unable to figure out what she is trying to speak. The son is then reminded by someone else, that when he was a toddler, the same ailing mother fully understood his garbled lan-

guage and bawling tantrums. Enthuses Johnny-bhai in a serious tone: “In almost all my items on stage, there is always a subtle social message in Chaplinesque style. Because I feel as an entertainer who has actually experienced the bitter struggle of life, I have a social responsibility.” Asked why he kept away from live shows all these years, he has his logical funda. “I have been shooting for a string of movies including ‘Housefull 2’, ‘YPD 2’ and, more recently, ‘Santa Banta’ and ‘It's Entertainment’ where a trained dog is the scene-stealing hero. “Being involved in the activities of the Artiste's Association ‘CINTAA’ of which I am the president, has kept me busy. My comeback to live showswhich is my ‘first love’ had to be a dhamaakedaar performance with original content.

Which is why I patiently waited for the right time and opportunity,” justifies Lever sporting his patented wide-eyed funny grin. Curiously, Johnny has no plans to kickstart any rival telly show to compete with currently reigning TV stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma .“Why should I be the kabaab-mein-haddi for Kapil, who is already doing an awesome job and is keeping the ‘stand-up comedy’ cult alive and kicking. In fact, many years ago, I had ventured into this trend on Zee TV when I had hosted this telly-show called ‘Johny Aala Re’,” explains Johnny, whose latest brilliant take-offs on ‘Lata-didi’ as also the ‘hamesha kuch na kuch doondte rehte hain’ on Shakira and Michael Jackson and other diverse forms of dancing movements, had the regaled audience demanding an encore.

Jimmy Shergill turns bad The heartening voice of KK By Sandeep Hattangadi

What made you accept ‘Fugly’? First of all it’s my friends' Akshay Kumar and Ashwini Yardi production, and when I heard the narrative, I could sense that the story was inspired from real life. It feels like an in-yourface kind of a negative role.

What was director Kabir Sadanand’s brief to you? “Kabir Sadanand said to me that he had written the part especially for me, as he felt that if I played it, I would give a different shade of villainy. I play a bad cop who gets after this group of friends consisting Mohit Marwah, Arfie Lamba, Kiara Adavani, and boxer Vijender Singh.

What is ‘Fugly’ about? ‘Fugly’, directed by Kabir Sadanand, is shot extensively in Delhi and the breathtaking locations of Leh. It is a story of four friends: Dev, Devi, Gaurav and Aditya, and how this carefree bunch, at the threshold of their lives, get caught in a ‘Fugly’ incident, which sucks them slowly into the big bad world of corruption, politics and the real society in the capital. The entertainingly original 'Fugly' is

Singer Krishna Kumar Menon, better known as KK, has a voice that makes hearts melt. No wonder he has sung a variety of hit songs in a short span of time. He has sung for films like 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', 'Tere Naam', 'Dhoom 2', 'Om Shanti Om', 'Race', 'Raaz', 'Guzarish', etc. Rajesh V. Gaur and Suneel V. Gaur met the elusive singer for an interview. Excerpts: wacky, kitsch and puts the best of friends through the most bizarre events of their life the game is 'FUGLY'! What is the USP of the film? Fugly is also the launch pad for Mohit Marwah, Olympic medalist boxer Vijender Singh, Kiara Advani and Arfi Lamba, the freshest faces to join the film fraternity. Also the ‘Fugly Fugly Kya Hai’ song is catching up fast.

ZNMD part of marketing text in Spain ‘Z

indagi Na Milegi Dobaara' received immense love and appreciation from audiences when it released in 2011. The film directed by Zoya Akhtar, with an ensemble cast, showcased Spain so beautifully that it has now been included as a case study for a course in marketing management there. It is learnt that the marketing course gives example of Spain as a product and attributes how the film has increased the country's tourism by 65 per cent. The context reads “How the film played the role of a brochure of Spain which gave a boost to tourism in Spain post its release”.

What inspired you to start singing? When I was a kid I would learn songs and sing them in the bathroom. I used to think it’s not drastically out of tune and the neighbours used to hear it and say “accha gaate ho tum”. I am not a formally trained singer. I learnt singing by listening to Kishore Kumar. Did you have to struggle a lot to reach the comfort zone you are in today? Everybody has to go through the struggle phase but luckily for me I didn’t have to sleep on railway platforms, go without food, or hang around people’s doors. I never did that. I would give my cassette and that’s it. I strongly believed that work would come on the basis of my talent.

You have always kept away from the limelight? Thankfully my music fraternity friends have understood that aspect of my personality and have been supportive. I always felt shy to speak about my achievements. My personal take on this subject, was “Gaana hit

ho gaaya aur aa gaya pasand logon ko.” Then that’s it for me.

Shouldn’t people be aware of the face behind a song? People know I have sung songs like 'Tadap Tadap Ke' and 'Pal' but after they come to know of my other hit songs they are shocked because they aren’t aware that those too were sung by me. I have now realised that it’s a part of my profession to connect with people.

Is there group baazi or camps existing among the music fraternity in Bollywood? Absolutely not. It’s one big happy family. How else do you think Vishal Dadlani is singing for Pritam, or Shankar singing for Vishal and Shekhar? There are all good vibes going around and good camaraderie.

Your favourite singers in the Hindi film industry? My all-time favourite is Kishore Kumar. Udit Narayan too has a lovely voice. From the current lot Benny Dayal, Arijit Singh, Shilpa Rao, Shreya Ghosal...all of them are just fabulous.

A scene from the movie Filmistaan

T

his week’s release Filmistaan is about an Indian man going across the border to Pakistan, where he finds people as crazy about Bollywood films as he is. Hindi films may not please the snooty film festival crowd, but the song-and-dance spectacles do appeal to people across the Indian Diaspora and all of South Asia, the influence now spreading to nontraditional markets, where horrendously sub-tilted prints make their way. Some markets like the action flicks and some the family melodramas, but all like the dances and festivity.

Maybe filmmakers who are imitating American and European cinema in the quest to cross over or make a dent in the festival circuit, are missing the point. The exotica works with foreign audiences, so why not package that, if they are so keen to conquer the West, or even the East. That Rajinikanth has a huge fan following in Japan is now quite well known. The craze for Indian films in Russia, Egypt, Malaysia is also reported often. Western countries may look upon Indian movie melodramas as curiosities, but everyone wants the

G

eneration Y is making inroads into Bollywood, and that is good news for the industry which was otherwise relying only seven or eight big names. With Tiger Shroff scoring a solid hit with 'Heropanti' which should touch the Rs.50 crore mark today, he is pretty much set for being the only debutant who found place in this club with a solo-hero launch opposite a new leading lady. Yes, 'Student Of The Year' did cross the Rs.50 crore mark, but then it was a two-

hero film with Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra sharing credits. Also, 'Raanjhanaa' scored around Rs.60 crore for Dhanush, though Sonam Kapoor was an established actress. Otherwise, as a solo-lead, Arjun Kapoor held the record of a highest grosser for a debut film with 'Ishaqzaade' bringing home around Rs. 48 crores. Now Tiger Shroff is set to cross that with Sajid Nadiadwala's 'Heropanti' for which the producer has bet his money on a newcomer for the first time ever.

Indian tourist rupee, so film producers are wooed with subsides and grants to shoot their films in their countries.

RINGSIDE VIEW Deepa Gahlot

Every year, one of the big awards functions is held in a different country, to capture the local population and also help that country’s tourism. One way of the other, the film industry has spread its tentacles everywhere. Amazingly, now comes the news that the Indian government is trying to bridge the large trade deficit with China by selling more Bollywood films in the country and is wooing China’s official state film importer, China Film Group Corporation. China has a quota system that allows only a few films to be imported into the country, so not too many Indian films go there, but 3 Idiots proved to be a big hit, and Dhoom 3 is on its way there, to open the door wider. Meanwhile, India is growing as a market for Hollywood films, and so there is a steady trickle of stars either visiting India or expressing a desire to work in Bollywood films. It is also less of a bureaucratic hassle to shoot in India now, and so many foreign films are being set here—Million Dollar Arm being the latest. What is clear, however, that cinema (like everything else), follows the money. It’s not so much art as commerce that drives it, and content is customized for the largest common denominator. Indian cinema will show the world what it wants to see—and reality has never been much in demand.

Farmers’ suicides showcased in ‘Bioscope’ By Rupesh Samant

A

spate of suicides by cotton growing farmers in Maharashtra in recent past is the main theme of filmmaker Girish Mohite's upcoming segment in 'Bioscope' which will be showcased at the Goa Marathi Film Festival. The segment titled 'Bail' (Ox) is a part of the anthology film 'Bioscope' which is based on four different poems of various Marathi authors cobbled together into a movie. The premiere of the movie will be held during the Goa Marathi Film Festival, beginning here tomorrow. “The story is about farmers' suicides but through the eyes of an ox. The original poem is by Loknath Yashwant, which is adapted into a screenplay by me and Abhay Dakane

(writer). I intended to show frustration of cotton growing farmers in the state. A quintal of cotton is sold at Rs.4,500 which is the cost of a shirt in a mall,” Mohite told PTI. The other three directors of 'Bioscope' include Ravi Jadhav ('Mitra'), Viju Mane ('Ek-hota-Viju') and Gajendra Ahire ('Dil-E-Nadan'). “The film may be based in Maharashtra but it mirrors the struggle of the toiling class across the country,” he said. To a query whether 'Bioscope' was inspired by 2013 Bollywood film 'Bombay Talkies', Mohite replied in negative. “We had announced the project in December 2012, and 'Bombay Talkies' was released after that. Moreover, 'Bioscope' is an exclusive concept where the films are based on poems,” the 'Bhartiya' director said.

Happy to make a mark in Bollywood: Sunny Leone I

ndo-Canadian adult film star Sunny Leone is happy for getting noticed but is not sure if she has made her mark in Bollywood. Before making her Bollywood debut in ‘Jism 2’, Sunny had participated in the fifth season of the reality show ‘Bigg Boss’. Sunny also did a special song in ‘Shootout at Wadala’ and was seen next in ‘Jackpot’ and ‘Ragini MMS 2’. “I think I have been noticed and I am happy about it. I am happy where I have reached today. I don’t know if I have made a mark for myself here. I want to do good work, have fun and entertain people,” Sunny told PTI in an exclusive interview here. “I have done only three films. I still have to work hard. I want more and more people to watch and enjoy my films. It is a steady process. I think one should work hard and prove oneself in dancing, acting and bringing in ticket sales (box office),” she said. Sunny is happy with the audience response to ‘Ragini MMS 2’. “I wasn’t expecting the film

to do this well. I thank my fans for watching the film. I wonder how can one film change things,” she added. Post the success of ‘Ragini MMS 2’, Sunny has been getting a lot of offers but she is in no hurry to do any film.

‘Offers are coming in. I think people have realised I am not here just for five minutes (on screen), I love this world. I will continue to work hard and do amazing work’

“Offers are coming in. I think people have realised I am not here just for five minutes (on screen), I love this world. I will continue to work hard and do amazing work. I am sure acceptance will come,” Sunny said. Responding to a query that she was look-

ing for an image-makeover, Sunny said that she did not set any rules for herself. “That is not true, I don’t know where this came from. I don’t set any rules, limits for myself,” the actress said. Sunny revealed that she will be seen in desi avatar in one of her upcoming films. “I don’t know when the film will release. I can’t talk about it as I am bound by contract,” she added. She will also host the seventh season of dating reality show, ‘Spiltsvilla’, based on original American version ‘Flavour of Love’. The show will be aired on MTV India. “When I was doing promotion for ‘Ragini MMS 2’, I did few episodes of MTV’s show ‘Haunted Nights with Sunny’. It was a nice experience. They (MTV) approached me for Spiltsvilla and I liked the concept and accepted the show. I wanted to host a show and I am glad this offer came to me. I am extremely excited about it as it is a way for me to connect with my fans. The show has romance, drama, masti, emotions etc,” Sunny said.

Bangladesh pick uncapped Taskin, Mithun for India series D

HAKA: Bangladesh today named uncapped wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Mithun Ali and pacer Taskin Ahmed in their 15-member squad to be led by Mushfiqur Rahim for three Oneday Internationals against India, starting in Dhaka on June 15. Mithun, 24, made his Twenty20 debut against Sri Lanka at Chittagong in February, but was not selected for the subsequent Asia Cup and the World T20 tournaments. Spotted as one of the quickest bowlers in Bangladesh, Taskin, 19, made his T20 debut against Australia in the World Cup. The youngster had made heads turn when he had clean bowled Glenn Maxwell for 5. Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s highest wicket-taker in 2013-14 domestic

season, medium-pacer Rubel Hossian has been left out of the squad with bowling all-rounder Ziaur Rahman given preference. Imrul Kayes, Arafat Sunny, Naeem Islam and Shafiul Islam, who were part of the Asia Cup ODI squad, have also been excluded, while Tamim Iqbal returned to the squad after missing the five-nation tournament due to a neck injury. Chief selector Faruque Ahmed said Mithun and Taskin had been included to test Bangladesh’s bench strength ahead of the 2015 World Cup. “We have kept more or less a settled squad but it is also important to get an idea about the kind of back up we have in our hands as we start preparing for the World Cup in Aus-

tralia and New Zealand,” Faruque said. “Mithun (Ali) has been under our radar for a while. He has performed consistently in the limited overs format and in the longer version as well during the last couple of years and deserves a chance at international level. “Taskin (Ahmed) is an exciting prospect and has already played a Twenty20 international. We thought it was a good opportunity to see how he performs in the 50-over game in home conditions against some quality batsmen,” Faruque insisted. He also explained that the omission of Rubel and justified the selection of medium pacer Al-Amin Hossain and off-spinning allrounder Mahmudullah.

ning with six points from three games. Australia took a two-goal lead at the start with goals from Chris Cirello (seventh minute) and Jacob Whetton (ninth minute). Eddi Ockenden increased the lead in the first minute of the second session, but Belgium pulled one back in the 46th minute through Sebastian Dockier. Playing tactical hockey England overcame a strong challenge from Malaysia. England enjoyed an edge from the moment Mark Gleghorne put them ahead in the fourth minute with a field goal. Malaysia pushed them hard, forced three penalty corners and a number of other scoring chances, but failed to secure the equaliser as England hung on grimly. Three minutes from close, Ashley Jackson placed a stinging penalty corner in the goal to seal the England victory.

Dadar XI down Vintage to make semis M

UMBAI: Dadar XI showed solid fighting spirit to put it across Vintage Dahisar United by a 4-2 margin in the concluding First Division ‘Super-Six’ play-off match of the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) League – 2013-14, at the St. Xavier’s ground, Parel on Thursday. Alex Ambrose, Sunny D’Souza, Praneet Kadam and Kundan Chandra, all netted one goal apiece for the Dadar side, while Richie Mathew struck both the goals one in each half for the Dahisar outfit. In a crucial and decisive encounter, that would decide which team earns the final semi-final slot, the Vintage team against the run of play took the lead through Mathew in the 11th minute. Dadar XI regrouped and took the fight to their opponents and their highly experienced striker Ambrose hit the target in the 40th minute to ensure his team went into the break on level terms, In the second session, the Dadar outfit dominated the proceedings and took the lead when D’Souza scored in the 50th minute before Kadam increased 12 minutes to put them in commanding position. No point thinking about criticism, can’t stop it: Rohit By Kushan Sarkar

N

EW DELHI: With some fine performances in all three formats of the game, Indian batsman Rohit Sharma says he has answered most of his critics quite emphatically in the past one year but cannot really do much about those who keep thinking about him like obsessive lovers. “Even after a good last season, there were people who were still criticising me. So I have realised that I have to just score runs because some criticism will always be there. I will do what’s there in my control as I have no control on what others feel about me. Critics actually are like girlfriends, they never stop thinking about you,” Rohit told PTI in jest during an interview. With more than 1000 runs in ODIs during the last season apart from winning Player-ofthe-series award in his debut Test series, Rohit has finally shown the consistency that his ardent fans expected from him. “It has been a good year and I would like to continue the good work in the coming season. Ask about the much-anticipated England series starting in the last week of this month, Rohit said mentally, he has started preparing but is not losing sleep over it. “I have been watching the ongoing England vs Sri Lanka series to get an idea about their team. I wouldn’t like to over-prepare. I believe that once you are in the groove, you can create your own strategy reacting to the situations. “It worked for me in New Zealand, where I batted well. Obviously, the basics will remain the same,” said the right-hander, who had an impressive start to his Test career with 455 runs from six games. Asked about any technical changes he has introduced in his batting, the stylish batsman said, “England is a place where you have to be good both on front and backfoot.

Zaccheroni’s flair faces acid test with Japan A

lberto Zaccheroni has done his best over four years in charge of Japan to dismiss the stereotype of Italian football men being focused on defence. The Italian coach has transformed the Blue Samurai into a hightempo attacking unit full of flair and capable of cutting open and scoring against the toughest of oppositions. That exciting play is thanks to the exploits of playmakers Shinji Kagawa and Keisuke Honda and is ably supported by forward

thinking full backs Yuto Nagatomo and Atsuto Uchida. However, it comes at the cost of clean sheets. Four goals were conceded against Uruguay and Italy last year, three against Brazil and China, and they also suffered upsets against Belarus, Serbia, Bulgaria and Jordan. That has taken some of the shine off Zaccheroni's early achievements in his first foray into international management, which was greeted by some scepticism in Japan.

While fans had hoped that Marcelo Bielsa or Manuel Pellegrini would succeed Takeshi Okada, who had stepped down after a last-16 exit at the 2010 World Cup, they offered guarded optimism at the unveiling of Zaccheroni. The Italian had ended a three-year spell out of the game by taking charge of Juventus for an unsuccessful four-month period which ended in May 2010. He had made his name at Udinese with some innovative tactics before joining AC Milan.

MELBOURNE: Spanish World Cup winner David Villa will play a guest stint at newly branded Melbourne City for Australia's ALeague next season, the club said. Villa, unveiled by Major League Soccer club New York City as its inaugural player this week, will take the field for Melbourne between October and December this year prior to the start of the American season. The 32-year-old, who joined New York after helping Atletico Madrid win the Spanish league title, is his country's all-time top scorer with 56 goals and will play for the world champions at his third World Cup in Brazil this month. Villa, who will play against the Socceroos in Group B at the World Cup, said he was excited about playing club football in Australia. "It's very good for me in every sense," he said in a statement.

World Cup hosts up to third spot

There has been some movement in the last edition of the FIFA/World Ranking before the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil: although the leading duo of Spain and Germany remain unchanged, Brazil will start the tournament in third place, having leapfrogged Portugal, while Argentina (5th, up 2) and Switzerland (6th, up 2) have each climbed two places and England (10th, up 1) have returned to the top ten at the expense of Greece (12th, down 2). A glance at the respective strengths of the World Cup groups makes for interesting reading: taking the average ranks and points totals of each set of four teams into account, Group D (Uruguay, Costa Rica, England, Italy) and Group G (Germany, Portugal, Ghana, USA) are the strongest groups. Group D is the only one containing three top-ten teams, while Group H (Belgium, Algeria, Russia, Korea Republic) has no such team.

India to play against Pak in Asian Games build-up games

NEW DELHI: As part of its build-up for the September Asian Games in Korea, India's under-23 football team will play two friendlies against Pakistan in Bangalore in August. The two matches will be played at the Bangalore Football Stadium on August 17 and August 20, the All India Football Federation said in a statement. The 30-member Indian contingent under head coach Wim Koevermans will be having their training camp in Bangalore from July 1. The three seniors in the Squad of U-23 players are Sunil Chhetri, Robin Singh and Francis Fernandes. All India Football Federation will also provide an exposure tour for the Team after the two Friendlies. The 30-member squad for the camp in Bangalore is Goalkeepers: Amrinder Singh, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Ravi Kumar, Kamaljit Singh. From the streets to the World Cup for Afriyie Acquah

I

T is often said that sport in general and football in particular can be used as an agent for social change, and for an unlikely figure set to figure at the 2014 World Cup, that is very true. Not too long ago, Afriyie Acquah was living on the streets of Sunyani, a town north-west of Kumasi in Ghana. The youngster was facing a difficult future, when a fateful meeting took place: he was spotted playing football.Although only 12 at the time, Acquah showed promise that belied his age, and scouts of the Glentoran Academy were excited about his potential. "The academy saw me one day and decided to help me. [Christopher Antoh] praised my talent and soon gave me a chance to travel and train at Glentoran in Belfast [Northern Ireland], where I had the opportunity of training with the senior team," Acquah explains.Like Acquah, Antoh was a homeless child living on the streets in Ghana and as with Acquah, fate intervened in Antoh's life. He was adopted by a Belfast school teacher and was hence known as Christopher Antoh Forsythe. Antoh loved football, but unlike Acquah, he did not possess as much talent and his involvement with the sport confined itself to being a supporter of Belfast club Glentoran. He returned to Sunyani as an adult and established the Glentoran academy to help other children.Although Acquah made a huge impression with the Glens, stringent regulations prevented him from being signed, and he returned to Ghana. But far from it being the end of the dream for the shy 15-year-old, it was merely the beginning. "Everything happened so quickly and fast and soon my dream looked to be in sight. At some point, I trained with Bechem United and joined them on tour in Italy where my first contact with Palermo happened. They took me in, gave me opportunities which I took with both hands. Times were hard when I was growing up, but God has been good to me. I told myself the moment to make my dreams count had arrived, and I was unwilling to lose it; not to anyone, not to anything."

OZIL WILL BOUNCE BACK AT WORLD CUP: LOEW MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JUNE 6, 2014

F

RANKFURT: Out-of-form Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil will recover his form at the World Cup in Brazil this month despite recent lackluster performances for club and country, Germany coach Joachim Loew said on Thursday. The 25-year-old Arsenal midfielder has enjoyed a rollercoaster season following a bright start after his big-money move from Real Madrid. His form dipped as the season wore on this year, earning him

jeers and whistles in the past few Germany internationals. Ozil was equally lacklustre in the 2-2 draw against Cameroon on Sunday, missing a great chance in the first minute and having little impact in the entire game. "To be honest I am a bit surprised by the reaction against Mesut," Loew told a news conference ahead of his team's final warmup game against Armenia on Friday. "Mesut won German national team player of the year last sea-

son but it is clear that he has not performed to the fullest of his abilities in the past few games." Only a season or two ago Ozil was seen as the next natural leader of the German team with his ability to dictate their attacking game, his skills and goal-scoring prowess earning him heaps of praise. But he has lost his spark since his surprise move to Arsenal last year, also earning recent criticism from former Germany captain Michael Ballack who said Ozil should take on more respon-

sibility and lead the team. "Through discussions and by showing him trust I think that he will deploy his exceptional abilities," Loew said. "I am certain because I know him and because I have had longer talks in the past months, that he is hot for the World Cup." "I am certain that he will do it and that Mesut will be better at the World Cup than he may be at the moment." Germany take on Ghana, Portugal and the United States in Group G.

Argentina ease to victory as T&T checks on Messi A

rgentina stepped up their World Cup preparation with a comfortable home win against Trinidad and Tobago at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. The visitors kept Lionel Messi off the scoresheet but could not resist the Barcelona player's international team-mates as goals from Rodrigo Palacio, Javier Mascherano and Maxi Rodriguez secured a comfortable victory. In Argentina's first designated World Cup warm-up fixture, it took Alejandro Sabella's team a good while to break through, but once Palacio netted the opening goal in first-half stoppage time there was little doubting the way the game would go. There was a hint of fortune about Palacio's goal, which came from a corner swept over from the left by Angel di Maria. Palacio's near-post header was firm,

Mascherano was perhaps the surprise figure sweeping up the loose ball, which bounced across the goal mouth for the midfielder to stick his left boot to and direct into the empty net. Williams was powerless to prevent him making it 2-0 to Argentina. Argentina broke out of defence at pace for the third goal in the 64th minute as Mascherano's long pass put Inter Milan's Palacio behind the Trinidad and Tobago backline. ARIS: Maria Sharapova will have the chance to reclaim the French Open title after a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 semi-final triumph over Eugenie Bouchard. The 2012 champion, who lost last year's final to Serena Williams, suffered a slow start at Roland Garros on Thursday, and fell a set down to the world number 16 after two dropped service games. However, the Russian responded well and just edged the second set before asserting her dominance in the last to reach her third final in as many years. Sharapova's opponent for the title will be Simona Halep who outclassed German Andrea Petkovic 62, 7-6 later on Thursday. In contrast to the wet and blustery weather that caused so many problems on Wednesday, conditions could not have been better as Court Philippe Chatrier basked in the Parisian sunshine. And on the clay, it was Bouchard who made the brighter start - breaking her more illustrious opponent after the pair had shared the opening two games. Sharapova broke back to level matters at 4-4 in the opener, but an instant reply from Bouchard was enough to win her the set. The second began in scrappy fashion and, while Bouchard surrendered two early service games to her opponent, she was able to pick up a break of her own in the third to minimise the damage. After surviving three set points at 5-3 down, Bouchard recovered well to take the game and effectively pull level in the set. However, the Canadian's serve continued to let her down and, after holding off one more set point with the scores at 65, was unable to stave off the threat for much longer as Sharapova made

na-Lena Groenefeld and JeanJulien Rojer won their first mixed doubles title together, seeing off Julia Goerges and Nenad Zimonjic 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 in the final. This is Rojer’s first Grand Slam title and Groenefeld’s second, the German doubles specialist having already won at Wimbledon in 2009 alongside Mark Knowles. It was a surprise run to the final for the unseeded pairing of Groenefeld and Rojer. They found themselves in the same quarter of the draw as No.1 team Abigail Spears and Alexander Peya but instead ended up playing the latter’s conquerors, Arantxa Parra Santonja and Santiago Gonzalez, whom they beat in straight sets in the quarters. No.3 seeds Yaroslava Shvedova and Bruno Soares were then seen off in the semis, 10-3 in a super tie-break, with the Dutch/German pairing saving two match points in the process. The opening exchanges of the

final were tight, as illustrated by the exchange of breaks in the early going. Games often went to deuce, where in mixed doubles play, the “No Ad” rule comes into play. The following point is decisive, and the receiving team has the advantage of choosing which side to take the service from. Goerges and Zimonjic, who cruised through the early rounds, defeating No.2 seeds Katarina Srebotnik and Rohan Bopanna on the way, were never headed in the first set, breaking Rojer’s service at the beginning and the end to book-end a 6-4 opener. The tide turned in the second and this time it was Goerges – who partnered Groenefeld in the women’s doubles here – who was broken twice. It therefore needed a super tiebreak to separate the two pairings, and despite conceding an early mini-break, Rojer and Groenefeld were never in any real danger, show-casing their volleying skills at the net and rushing into a 5-2 lead before closing it out 10-7.
