he Supreme Court on December 10, 2013 had ordered that red beacon lights on vehicles can only be used by people listed as "high dignitaries", that too only when they are on duty. City mayor Sunil Prabhu was asked by the state government in a letter on April 10, this year, to remove the red beacon and replace it with the amber light without flasher on the top of his car as he comes in the category of the mayor of 'A' and 'B' class of the municipal corporation within the jurisdiction. When we crossed checked it, we noticed that there has been a new particular advancement in the fees as the name of personality development classes. We do not wish to take up those classes, but its compulsory as it is mentioned in the fees receipt. The University should take some actions and save us from being looted!”. Another students from a mass media course, said that his college has done the same thing and has taken money for a business course which has no relevance with the media degree course which the student is pursuing. As per the norms of the University Grants Commissions (UGC) any college affiliated to a university, should compulsorily follow the financial structure stated by the university. Any college abiding the stated fees structure will be liable to face punishment on capitation of fees from the university. The ADC, when spoke to Pradeep Sawant, Grievance Cell member and Senate member MU, said “Student should step ahead and lodge a complaint against the colleges if they feel that they are being looted. The name and identification of the student will be kept unknown by the Students Grievance Cell. ity college tie-up with private institutes and organizations to conduct classes and activities which has to be compulsorily opted by the students. While the personality development and communication skills are necessary for the students pursuing the business and media degree courses, colleges across Mumbai are making the best out of it. Claiming the need for skills in personality, communications and business city colleges have tied up and collaborated with private classes and organizations. Though student do not voluntarily wish to take such classes, colleges have made it a compulsion by including the fees of such classes in their fee structure. Having no option, students are falling prey to pay extra upon their fees which is against the norms of the University. Last week, most of the colleges began their admissions for the second and third year degree college students. After the payment of the fee, the students were astonished to read a new detail added in the fee structure. This new detail stated

The Swatantryaveer Savarkar Rashtriya Smarak, held a musical rock fusion day and night programme on May 27, which meant the dark night of the Independence struggle on Savarkar’s life who was imprisoned in the Andaman for 14 years was performed by young music composer Sunshrut Swanu aka Akolkatkar who sang the songs and the poems written by Savarkar on the various periods in his life in the forms of ‘powadas’. It was an audio visual show that portrayed the life of Savarkar who embarked a journey to London for studies in the early twentieth century. His activities included, starting a mouth piece paper for India’s freedom, his organisation of like minded people like Madan Lal Dhingra, Lala Hardayal, Ras Behari Bose and so on. The slides shown were very rare and the producers of the show have done a great deal of research on the show including the narration by Sunshrut Swanu. It was a great musical show based on the life of a great man.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, MAY 29, 2014

May 21, and the manhole at the junction of two roads just before the Santacruz (west) gurudwara, gapes open, as it has been doing for more than one month. (Right) May 27 and the H West ward seems to have woken up to its duties. One more ADC impact!

Make a noise If it were not for the doughty sense of humour that most Mumbaikars are compelled to cultivate, life in this great metro city would be a vale of constant tears. So when we first saw the cheeky use of an open manhole in Santacruz, we could not help but laugh. Who else but someone with lots of personality would use the dried branches of a shrub, used to warn the public about the gaping hole in the road, to advertise his personality development classes! And while we do not know what the response was, it certainly bagged eyeballs, exasperated, amused and disgusted. Because while this is funny for a couple of days, when the open manhole stays open for a month, even as the BMC is declaring it is completely ready for the rains, it is not so funny. Hence we are glad to note that somewhere in the week between taking the picture and passing that way again, the civic body, more particularly the H West ward office, seems to have taken note and acted accordingly. Which brings us to another realisation, that we must emphasise and remember in these days of changing political equations and rising awareness of what constitutes rights and duties. So you see something that needs doing, you either do it yourself or get after those who are supposed to do it. And remember, corporators, MLAs and MPs are not doing you a favour when they use their earmarked funds for projects in your locality. This is their duty and your right. Keep quiet and nothing will ever get done.

The curse of Twitter

We shall make that tweets, because it really is not Twitter's fault that we make such lousy use of social media or that it leads our

netas on to keep tweeting as if their lives (and ours) depended upon letting us know what they are doing, thinking and reacting to, 24 hours in the day. It is largely the fault of the media which finds it a source of stories and keeps mining it as if it were a vein of gold instead of the dross actually thrown up. The current rubbish about Union minister for

HRD Smriti Irani's educational qualifications is a case in point. Considering that Congress MPs have hardly covered themselves in educational vainglory, that Mulayam Singh Yadav was once Minister of Defence, and that the Gandhis are themselves hardly poster children for higher education, Ajay Maken had no business tweeting what he did. He sounded like a petulant, backward child trying to make a malicious point. But since he did, the best revenge would have been to ignore

it. But that is impossible! And consider Omar Abdullah's idiotic tweet about Jammu & Kashmir possibly seceding ('not being a part of' is how he chose to phrase it) from the Union if Article 370, giving the state special status, were to be altered in any way. And then, of course, seeing that this is the twitterverse where anything goes, you have RSS worthy Ram Madhav tweeting the equivalent of “baap ka raj samajh rakha hai”. Except that he said “Omar (is) thinking it's his parental

estate”. Specially now, with social media making it possible for everyone and the village idiot to weigh in with opinions on everything, perhaps the media itself should take lessons in how to weigh the importance of what is said according to who says it and in what manner. But for that to happen, the press in India itself will have to change its attitude and stop looking for stories where there is nothing but sound and fury. Azad Shrivastav | ADC

A painless procedure

It was good to see the US Consulate make a mela out of student visa day at the American Consulate in BKC yesterday. There was festivity in the air, buntings and college pennants, huge cakes, and what the consulate describes as “University fight songs playing in the refreshment hall” and by all indications, the students were enjoying themselves thoroughly. For those who like figures, here are a few. As of April 2014, nearly 9,000 schools are certified to enroll international students in the US, serving an international community of 1.02 million international students, of which 113,000 are Indians, the second largest contingent of foreign students. All those who were applying yesterday have secured admissions and the list reads most impressively, including Columbia, Harvard, MIT, Syracuse, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech etc, just some of the 231 destinations listed. But of more immediate concern to those who were there, 12 kg of

Next stop America! Students applying for visas to study in the US interacted yesterday with Peter Haas, consul general, and obviously an alumnus of Wesleyan in Illinois. The Consulate staff at BKC represent 73 Universities!

popcorn were to be popped and consumed with 36 University fight songs playing in the background. Some more facts – there is a 70 per cent increase in Indian

students taking the Graduate Record Exam in 2013, and 78 per cent of students opt for STEM fields, that is Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, with

engineering the top choice. For those who are left behind, no worries, not with Smriti Irani in charge of the country's education as the minister for HR.

n a top secret operation, the Indian Navy bid adieu to the country's first aircraft carrier IMS (former INS) Vikrant that brought a glorious tag of Blue Water-Navy to the Indian Navy and ensured victory in the war of liberation of Bangladesh in 1972, putting a newly independent country on the world map. First time in more than one and a half decade, IMS Vikrant was moved to Darukhana in South Mumbai on Wednesday morning.

and cannot sustain itself as its hull is damaged and it may sink any moment. In such situation, it cannot be moved once the monsoon starts. Last month, the Navy had sold the decommissioned ship to IB Commercial Pvt Ltd which was successful in the online bidding, offering Rs.60cr to scrap the ship. However, the bidder cannot touch the structure of the ship till the final decision comes from the Supreme Court. More than 60 per cent of the artefacts have been moved to the Maritime History Society

Shiv Sena members of parliament Rahul Shewale along with other Sena workers protesting against the navy's decision to scrap the INS Vikrant For the last 17 years, the state and Central Governments have tried to transform this old air craft into a museum ship. Before that, Indian Navy headquarters, on a war footing, requested the Supreme Court, where the case is still going on, to take the ship out from its dock and shift it to the Darukhana, a shipbreaking yard. The SC allowed this on the grounds that ship is too old

in Mumbai while the rest have been shifted to Naval Aviation Museum in Goa. The Majestic-class aircraft carrier, purchased from Britain in 1957, played a key role in enforcing the Naval blockade of East Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. According to experts, “The transformation of INS Vikrant into museum ship was not feasible. In 2008, the project was tagged Rs.500cr and at may go up to Rs.800cr.”

He added that since Sena president Uddhav Thackeray and Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to each other and that the Sena president was satisfied there were no difference of opinion amongst the two leaders. nied reports of any mistrust, according to a Sena MLA who did not wished to be named termed the BJPs decision to allocate the Heavy Industries portfolio as 'outrageous'. He argued that the BJP deliberately allocated a less important portfolio to the Sena which is its oldest ally while allocating plump portfolios to Akali Dal and Telgu Desam Party. He argued that the Sena did not win 18 Lok Sabha seats merely because of the Modi wave, but also due to its own mass base across the state. The Sena MLA even warned that the party in the ensuing assembly elections will outperform the BJP.

him to police custody. Accused Yadav, a native of Rajasthan, had fired five rounds in the rooms where his colleagues had been resting at 1.30 am on Tuesday. The police officers further said that Yadav had wanted to kill anybody who stood in front of him on the day of the incident. He was on duty at the gate of the installation when he entered the rest room and noticed his colleagues watching television. He called up his supervisor to complain and told him to ask the colleagues to switch the TV off. The supervisor told him to shut up. That was when he decided to ggun them down.

They sat amid their Congress comrades and looked less sullen than they did last week when neither Sonia nor Rahul Gandhi were able to bring themselves to congratulate Modi on his victory. Then, came a roll of drums and the President, a tiny figure hidden behind his tall bodyguards, came slowly down the magnificent steps of Rashtrapati Bhavan and the ceremony officially began. Our new prime minister took his oaths of office and secrecy in a strong voice, clearly enunciating every word and a loud cheer went up from the vast gathering with some disturbing cries of 'Jai Sree Ram' from the back. More loudly from my own enclosure came shouts of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and

Swapan's wife, Reshmi, pointed to a monkey playing on the roof of Rashtrapati Bhawan, we chattered about the new ministers and expressed the hope that they would perform better than their predecessors. And, the ceremony dragged on until darkness had fallen over the forecourt and everyone had lost interest in the new ministers and the ceremony. Why could the ministers of state not have been sworn in together someone asked why did they have to drag things out with individual oaths of office? Why could the Prime Minister not have sworn in just his cabinet ministers instead of the whole caboodle? In other words, dear readers, most people were quite visibly bored with a ceremony that really went on too long and was dreary beyond belief. Those of us who were there were happy to be present to bear witness to a historical transition, but at the same time I was person-

sonant note; Viwaqdi, an enemy, a dissonant note. This gives to the student of the raga a clear conception of its use. Each raga has its image distance from the other. The poets have depicted the images of ragas just as the picture of each aspect of life is clear in the imagination of the intelligent. The ancient gods and goddesses were simply images of the different aspects of life, and in order to teach the worship of the immanence of God in nature these various images were placed in

MATTER & SPIRIT the temples, in order that God in His every aspect of manifestation might be worshipped. The same idea has been worked out in the images of ragas, which create with delicate imagination the type, form, figure, action, expression and effect of the idea. In the same way each raga has power upon the atmosphere, as well as upon the health and mind of man; the same effect as that shown by the different times in life, subject to the cosmic law. By the knowledge of both time and raga the wise have connected them to suit each other. There are instances in ancient tradition when birds and animals were charmed by the flute of Lord Krishna, rocks were melted

ally disappointed that Rashtrapati Bhawan had put together a ceremony so reminiscent of those tedious black and white Doordarshan documentaries from long ago. The length of the ceremony may have been more bearable if we had not been subjected for more than an hour to the drone of a commentator whose commentary was straight out of a school assembly. In Doordarshan tones the commentator described for us the architectural wonders of the building that stood before us and when this was done he started on the flowers in the gardens and then when the presidents and prime ministers arrived he ordered us to clap for them. How much more exalting it would have been, we said to each other, if there had been a musical performance before the ceremony or even patriotic songs or Sanskrit 'shlokas'? But, then we reminded ourselves that the ceremony was organized by Rashtrapati Bhawan and not the new prime minister so perhaps what we saw was the swan song of Soviet-style ceremonies in Delhi. Having seen many, many of these in the years that I have been a political journalist let me say that they are ceremonies that should have been done away with long ago because they seem designed for another era. They have remained unchanged because the officials who design them have remained unchanged and seemingly oblivious of how much India has changed while their backs were turned.

PM’s first day in office On his first day in office the Prime Minister made it clear that things would be changing in Delhi and that they would change fast. His first day as Prime Minister happened to be the fiftieth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru's death and he made it a point not to go and pay obeisance along with members of the Gandhi family. Was it a symbolic gesture? Was it equally symbolic that he began his tenure by placing a handful of red rose petals before a picture of Gandhiji? In any case he needs to get beyond symbols and bring about the real changes he promised in this campaign, because the country that he now leads is filled with people impatient for real change. Nobody knows this better than him and perhaps nobody knows better than him that it was this promise of change that has brought him an electoral victory that is almost a revolution. by the song of Orpheus; and the 'Dipak Raga' sung by Tansen lighted all the torches, while he himself was burnt by reason of the inner fire is song produced. Even today the snakes are charmed by the snake-charmers pungi. This shows how the ancients must have dived into the most mysterious ocean of music. The secret of composition lies in sustaining the tone as solidly and as long as possible through all its different degrees; a break destroys its life, grace, power and magnetism, just as the breath holds life, and has all grace, power and magnetism. There are some notes that need a longer life than others, according to their character and purpose. In a true composition a miniature of nature’s music is seen. The effects of thunder, rain, and storm, and the pictures of hills and rivers make music a real art. Although art is an improvisation on nature, yet it is only genuine when it keeps close to nature. The music which expresses the nature and character of individuals, nations or races it still higher. The highest and most ideal form of composition is that which expresses life, character, emotions and feelings, for this is the inner world which is only seen by the eye of mind. A genius uses music as a language to express fully, without the help of words, whatever he may wish to make known; for music, a perfect and universal language, can express feeling more comprehensively that any tongue. – Hazrat Inayat Khan

Modi breaks the ice in Indo-Pak relationship NARENDRA Modi takes guard as India's 15th Prime Minister with a backing of over a billion population to lead our nation to success never ever seen before, such is the hope and aspiration of his countrymen on him. He means business from day one which was evident from his meeting with Nawaz Sharif where he made it ample clear to his guest that India won't tolerate violence and terrorism from across the borders. Modi is a man of action for whom work is worship as he made clear in no uncertain terms to his cabinet colleagues that those who fail in their duties would be shunted out and replaced with others on the bench which means his ministers would be on their toes at all times. Hardly the new govt has settled, Mr. Singh has gone to suggest that repealing of Article is under active consideration. It was more to embarrass Nawaz Sharif who was in Delhi rather than to initiate serious debate on the issue because neither BJP has numbers to repeal the act, nor the circumstances to pursue this as it would throw the country into a war like situation. THE meeting between Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Indian prime minister Narendra Modi about the terrorist activities at the Line of Control (LoC) and other parts of the country was waste of money and time as the facts proves that despite assurance given by Pakistan in the past, terrorist activities in India still continues to destroy the Indian economy and many other things as the reports shows that despite democratic government in Pakistan the entire administration is being controlled by Pakistan Army, terrorist groups and Taliban as they don't want any good relation with India since past many and the Pakistan government s a mute spectator and does not have any power to improve relations with India.

THE anger of the Rajasthan C M over severe under-representation of the State in the Union cabinet is fully justified. Apart from giving a thumping majority to the BJP in the Assembly elections, the State electorate has accorded a clean sweep to the Saffron Party in the L S polls. HINDUSTAN Motors, the maker of India's Ambassador Car has suspended production, citing debt and lack of demand for the iconic vehicle. Rightly, just recently as per BBC Top Gear – Ambassador is world’s best taxi car. Lately it was seen mostly as taxis and used by government ministries-officials only. Like most electronic gadgets, two wheelers and four wheelers-cars etc, the quality is compromised-going

down – prices are slashed to attract more customers, the life span of most such products is much shorter naturally. There are lot more number of cars now in the market –many with higher speeds - but quality wise none has lifelong durability! I wish old timer Fiat and Ambassador type cars to come back in India. Both were very steady cars for Indian roads. — Mahesh Kumar, New Delhi

Controversy over Smriti’s qualification snowballs

HRD Minister Smriti Irani

N

EW DELHI: The controversy over HRD Minister Smriti Irani's educational qualification snowballed on Wednesday with the BJP and some ministers hitting back with carping comments on Sonia Gandhi even as Congress appeared to be divided. Irani also got support from JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav who attacked Congress for raking up the issue while the minister herself refused to comment on the row. Women rights activist Madhu Kishwar, who started

it all with her tweets critical of Narendra Modi making Irani the HRD Minister, was unsparing saying education and research in India was in a shambles and something urgent was needed to be done to lift standards in the system. Somebody with a vision was needed for the job, said Kishwar, a self-confessed admirer of Modi, reports PTI. Kishwar said that as someone in the academia she felt that the HRD ministry was a very "vital" ministry and that India's education sector was

in a mess and somebody with a vision was needed. The HRD ministry requires handling chief ministers, because education is a state subject and also requires handling vice chancellors, she said. "HRD needs a head who can steer dexterously between Left and Right extremists in academia to define sensible course unfettered by partisan agendas," she had said on Twitter. Slamming the Congress, Union Minister Uma Bharti questioned the educational qualification of its party president Sonia Gandhi. "I want to ask them (Congress) what are the educational qualifications of Sonia Gandhi, because she has headed the UPA and gave directions to the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The entire UPA government would stand with folded hands outside her door. So Sonia Gandhi, who ran the UPA government, what are her qualifications," Bharti asked.

RINAGAR/NEW DELHI: The row over Article 370 escalated on Wednesday with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah asking the Centre to make known the 'stakeholders' it was talking to for repealing special status to Jammu & Kashmir and RSS saying no one should take any offence to a call for a debate. Omar also made it clear that Article 370 cannot be abrogated till the Constituent Assembly, which approved J&K's accession to India, is recalled, a day after the MoS in the PMO Jitendra Singh stirred a controversy by declaring that the new government has started the process for repealing the provision. J&K CM Omar Abdullah to endangering the security and the integrity of the country. Contending that it was impossible for BJP government to abrogate Article 370, Omar said confusion was being deliberately created on the issue which would further alienate the people of the state. "They (BJP government at the Centre) cannot abrogate

Article 370 till the Constituent Assembly is recalled. The Constituent Assembly approved accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India. If you want to raise the question once again, then you need to bring the Constituent Assembly and then we will talk," Omar told reporters in Srinagar. Omar said Singh had stated that talks with stakeholders had been started and sought to know who they were. Reacting to Omar's remarks that either J and K won't be part of India or Article 370 that grants special status to the state will still exist, senior RSS leader Ram Madhav said the state will always be an integral part of India with or without the provision. Madhav also asked whether the Chief Minister thought the state was his 'parental estate' and said no one should take any offence to any 'open-ended debate' on Article 370.

Housing for all by 2020: Naidu N

Terming "affordable housing for all by 2020" scheme as his "most favourable agenda", Naidu said, "People of the country should be in a position to have 'pucca' houses for each one of them. It is not an easy job. But is possible. We have to make serious efforts for it. Seeking cooperation from corporates, he said, "I want PPP, CSR and corporates to take care of their staff in housing. We want state governments to participate in it. Municipal bodies also should join us in this mission for housing for all. Upcycling scrap That’s what Radhika Khaitan Mittal & Madhvi Khaitan aim to do with their initiative, WorkshopQ. Dev Goswami speaks to the duo to find out more about the concept behind this new, eco-friendly brand

I

f you were to visit WorkshopQ’s website or Facebook page, you would think of a number of things — home décor, quirky items, eye-catching products... but the one word that won’t come to mind is eco-friendly. Interestingly, all the products available at WorkshopQ are, in fact, made from scrap. The brand was founded by two sisters, Radhika and Madhvi, who wanted to convert the waste that we generate in our daily lives into something useful, without compromising on the design or the aesthetics of the products. And so, WorkshopQ was born, enabling them to do just that. We talk to them to find out more about their brand. First of all, tell us about WorkshopQ. How did you come up with the concept of re-using and, as you say, ‘upcycling’ scrap and waste? WorkshopQ is simplicity, blended with creativity. It is a movement where we look at things from a different perspective and give the term green design new meaning. WorkshopQ is where we mix style and sustainability in order to create something new and inspiring, while keeping in mind the growing dangers that our planet faces. The idea behind the brand is simple — we want to spread awareness about the importance of upcycling, while proving that it can be aesthetically pleasing at the same time. The lack of awareness in India and the notion that eco-friendly means earthy colours and restricted materials such as jute and clay, prompted us to start WorkshopQ. We wanted to prove to people that going green can also be a lot of fun!

Your products certainly don’t look like they’ve been made using scrap. How do you ensure this? We design our products in such a way all traces of it being made from scrap are hidden. Is designing a range of products using waste any different than designing a normal home décor item? It is slightly more challenging, because you have to re-imagine an already existing product into a completely different one. However, this challenge is what pushes us to be more innovative and creative. On the same lines, how do you come up with ideas for your products? We draw inspiration from anything and everything around us, which helps us with ideas for our products. What are a few of your personal favourites from WorkshopQ’s line up? We love our record clocks, faucet wall hooks and key frames. They are so rustic and chic looking, that they make us smile every time we see them. Their speciality is that they are all made from extremely common household products, yet they are different and quirky. >> (Left) Radhika and (right) Madhvi, the sister-duo behind WorkshopQ Could you give our readers one or two examples of how they can convert everyday household waste into home décor or a new, useful item? There are endless possibilities when it comes to upcycling. You can make pretty pen stands/ vases out of old tins by cleaning them out, painting them white and wrapping them with any leftover lacy piece of cloth in the house. Then, coat it with some Fevicol diluted with

water and voila — you have a pretty vase! For an added embellishment, you can even tie a ribbon around the bottom of the can. You can also take old crayon stubs lying around the house, crush them, shape them using heart-shaped cookie moulds, bake them and you will have pretty name tags ready to be attached to all those presents that you’ve been meaning to

give away. You can also follow our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/workshopq for more easy DIYs. What are your future plans for the brand? We plan to open a chain of flagship stores across the country and aim to expand our export base as well.

>> (Left to right) Twister lamps made from plastic bags and iron pipes, coasters made from wine corks, clock made from the waste sourced from a carpenter’s shop and the vinyl record clock, which is Radhika and Madhvi’s personal favourite. For availability and prices, visit www.workshopq.com

« top 5: kimono inspired clothes we love 1. tile it up This tile print kimono from The Beach Company is perfect for a day at the beach. It’s long, comfortable and looks good as a cover up over a swimsuit. price `700

Dry shampoo is the perfect fix for when you don’t have the time to wash and dry your hair but need it to look perfectly styled. Rhea Dhanbhoora & Shirley Mistry show you how to use it correctly make space In order to ensure that you’re not just spraying on the surface, remember to section your hair properly on each side. Divide your hair into sections, the same way you would to blow dry it. You will have to spray each section separately, so if you’re in a hurry, clip them all up and spray the shampoo over your entire scalp.

1

things to remember Whether you’ve used dry shampoo before or are just beginning to, follow these pointers to avoid making mistakes that could ruin your hair:

« 5 ways to rock: kimono inspired clothes

Yamini Walia tells you about some of the different ways in which to don the stylish kimono look perfectly 1. versatile If you own a kimono cover-up, you can wear it with any outfit and for any occasion. You can style it in different ways and give each outfit a different look with the same kimono. From formal to casual to beach, a kimono is a versatile option.

2. graphic look This graphic print kimono top by And, from www.fashionara.com, screams chic style and is perfect to wear for an afternoon do. The drawstring at the waist will accentuate curves at all the right places. price `978

2

2. Well-fitted Kimonos are designed in a way that highlights the upper part of your body. So, make sure that your kimono is neither too loose nor too tight, as you can end up looking sloppy.

3. dyed over The tie-dye print of this blue kimono dress by Alice + Olivia, available at www.rocknshop.com, makes it a trendy option. Pair it with a statement accessory depending on the occasion. price `28,533

Never use dry shampoo on wet, or even slightly damp hair. If you do, the product will build up in your scalp and cause dandruff and other hair problems.

l

Remember that dry shampoo takes time to settle, so don’t try to get it out of your hair just because it still looks white and flaky. It absorbs the oil slowly, so it could look like it’s not reacting well with your hair initially.

3. accessorise A kimono looks amazing when it’s paired with different accessories. You can accessorise your look with items such as bags, scarves, bracelets and hats. So, what are you waiting for? Pick up some funky accessories to style your kimono.

l

Spray it from a distance. Make sure that it is at least 7-8 inches away from your scalp.

5. Wrap around This kimono wrap around from Pretty Secrets, is super soft, cozy and a nightwear essential in every woman’s wardrobe. The wrap also has a removable tie at the waist! price `1,299

The one mistake people make is that they spend too much time trying to avoid spraying the other parts of their hair. However, you should not be so worried as there is no reason dry shampoo should not be on the tips of your hair too.

l

* For this pictorial, we used the Batiste Dry Shampoo which is priced at `550.

3

style & comb Dry shampoo settles into your scalp after a few minutes, so you still have time for a little styling, just as you would with a regular wash and dry. Use a wide-toothed comb or a brush with thicker bristles and style your hair, neatening any flyaways that may have risen from the tousling.

« celeb hit or miss: rhea dhanbhoora takes a look at what our leading ladies wore this week « « tamanna bhatia

kriti sanon

Tamanna may have been trying to channel old Hollywood glamour with this dress, but she hasn’t pulled it off very well. The dress itself is a very pretty hue and we love the slight off-shoulder neckline, but the shoes are too starkly contrasted against it and her pink nails and lips make her look like an overdone Barbie.

5

4

« tousle it up Although you’ve sprayed the dry shampoo on different portions of your hair, you’re going to want to tousle it up nicely to ensure that it dissolves into your scalp and absorbs the oil. Any remnants on the surface of your head are going to look like dandruff, so make sure you rub it in properly!

>> 90210 star Shenea Grimes looks effortlessly stylish in her kimono shrug

5. slimmer frame If the upper half of your body is heavy, then you should opt for a kimono, as it will make you look slimmer. Despite emphasising your upper body, a kimono acts as a perfect cover-up. So, opt for one if those heavy arms are a problem!

lakmé 9 to 5 hydrating sunscreen This summer, Lakmé has gone a step further to ensure that both skin types — oily and dry — can get great protection from the sun with their range of mattifying and hydrating sunscreens. The hydrating sunscreen that I used is enriched with vitamins and reduced spots while lightening my skin tone. The cream spread and blended easily in to my skin, without leaving any whitish cast. It did make my skin look shiny at first, but after settling down it left a very soft and smooth texture that I was happy with. Even though they claim that the sunscreen will offer protection for eight hours, I had to reapply it after every three to four hours. But, true to its claims, the sunscreen performed extremely well and prevented my skin from tanning when I was in the sun. price `500 for 30ml Where Retail outlets across the city star rating ***

Kriti may have played it safe with her look, but we love the printed shirt and mint jeans combo. She’s kept her accessories and makeup simple with pink thong sandals and a pink lip. We love the plain brown belt that adds a trendy touch to her overall look.

Azar Khan | HRM

If your hair doesn’t settle down with mild combing, you can use a blow dryer to dry it.

l

get started Spray each section of your hair carefully, making sure that none of the dry shampoo gets in your eyes, nose or mouth. Treat it exactly like you would treat a hairspray. Hold it away from your head so that you’re not spraying a big clump in one spot.

of newly launched products

organic harvest exfoliating face scrub Homegrown brand, Organic Harvest, has introduced a delicious smelling exfoliating scrub, enriched with natural, plant- derived moisturising factors. I didn’t expect much from it since most exfoliators are all talk and no action. However, using the scrub for a little over two weeks has made my skin look much more supple and a lot healthier. It delivers on its promise to revitalise dull skin and I can feel the difference on days when I skip using it. The best part is that although it tingles a little, the exfoliant properties are very light and so it doesn’t feel like it’s scraping your skin off even if you scrub vigorously. price `695 for 100g; `445 for 50g Where Retail outlets across the city star rating ****

4. lighter colours You should always pair a kimono with lightcoloured jeans and tops. Your kimono, whether it’s a top or dress, needs to be the centre of attention. A darker top or jeans will steal the focus away from your kimono, whereas light colours will lay emphasis on it.

l

4. comfort first This kimono top from Fabindia, with its contrasting border, is a perfect option for the summer. Combine it with bangles and a jhola to add an ethnic Indian touch. price `954

set & go! Whether you choose to spray it down with a little finishing spray (this is not necessary at all as you can see from the picture) or add a little shine with a serum, you’re ready-to-go with freshly styled hair in a matter of minutes.

vidya malvade

Vidya’s look is a mix of hits and misses (we’re not fans of the bright blue clutch with this look), but the pretty summer print and simple neckline on her kurta save the day. We hated it at first, but on giving it a second look, the skirt adds a sweet touch to her ensemble. Her impeccably done makeup and great hair are an added bonus. We’re fans of the big orange earrings too!

«

neesh jamval

Oh Neesh, where do we begin? The splatter of gold on an otherwise elegant white dress just does not suit her and an updo may have suited the neckline better than this wispy blow-dry. We don’t even know what to say about the garish silver jewellery (that collar neckpiece! Ugh!) that’s a total mismatch.

«

amy billimoria

We know that sheer skirts are in this season, but we don’t like what Amy has done with her look. The big motifs ruin a dress that would have looked prettier in a simple, solid shade. She doesn’t look like she’s made any effort with her hair either! But, we appreciate the simple gold watch instead of an overload of accessories.

Email etiquette Shutterstock

You might not think that sending out an email is something you have to learn how to do. But, if you want to be seen as a smart, professional employee, you need to perfect the art of framing appropriate emails. Dev Goswami gives you a few tips to ensure that the emails you compose reflect your good work ethic

G

ood communication is incredibly important, no matter what field you’re in. From being able to sell an idea or market a brand, to intelligibly delegating work and making sure that your directives are wellunderstood, you need to have very good communication skills in order to succeed in your career. While most people perfect verbal communication skills with a little practice, written correspondence is a different ball game altogether, especially when it comes to the humble email. Devoid of emotion, you are essentially, what you write and since emails take on a formal tone in the business world, a badly written one can lower your standing with clients as well as with your superiors. So, we bring you a few tips to help you write better emails.

The language: You don’t have to be a grammar Nazi to compose a good email, but don’t forget the usage of basic punctuation such as commas, periods and exclamation marks. With the latter, it’s best to forget them altogether. Exclamation marks are meant only for when you’re saying something that is shocking and surprising, not at the end of every other line. There’s no reason to be excitable in a formal email and it makes people think of you as childish. Also, remember to avoid emoticons! No one wants to see a formal email peppered with blushing or teary-eyed yellow faces. Another common mistake is using SMS language — if you do, then take it for granted that the person reading your email is going to give up halfway with a poor impression of you.

lengTh: Try and keep your email The subjecT: This is the most as short as possible. Longer emails important part of your email. A vague subject line or an email that is devoid of a subject altogether, will probably go unread. Subjects don’t have to be complex, winding sentences; your aim should be to capture the broad theme of the email in a brief sentence. For example, instead of writing “AN EMAIL ABOUT THE PRICES YOU WANTED FROM RAVI,” write “Requested price details.” When it’s in all caps, it’s screaming to be opened and usually doesn’t make it to the reader’s priority list. Repeating who it’s from in the subject line is redundant and unnecessary. If the information has been requested, they will know why you’re emailing them, so a simple line should suffice.

dealing WiTh delay in PaymenTs I have been working with my company for around two years. The people are great and I love my work, but the problem lies with the functioning of this company. A lot of things get delayed and people around me haven’t even received their yearly bonus yet. We haven’t heard about our increments either. On further enquiry, I found out that this has been happening for the past few years and that salaries are also often delayed. Is this a good reason to look for another job? — lalita sen, marine lines dear lalita, There could be several reasons for this delay in payments, especially when it concerns bonuses and reimbursements. The company might just be investing in other avenues. As long as you love your work and get your

salary on time, you shouldn’t worry about anything. However, increments are a symbol of the recognition of an employee’s hard-work. So, clarity on the issue is important. You should try clarifying the reason for the delay by drafting a mail to the concerned person. Make sure that the mail is polite and if you’d like to draft the perfect work mail, you can refer to our article above. If you don’t get a reply, speak to your immediate supervisor or someone who has been working at the company for a while. We are sure you will get an answer. Making an inquiry might urge the company to try and be more prompt as well. send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday

saluTaTion: You can never go wrong with a classic, ‘Hello.’ Avoid the informal ‘Hi’ or the just-forfriends ‘What’s up!’ An appropriate greeting of the day, such as ‘Good Morning’ or ‘Good Afternoon’ also works, but make sure you don’t copy paste it into all your emails through the day. Accompany the salutation with a ‘Mr.’, ‘Ms.’ or ‘Mrs.’ and steer clear of words such as ‘Respected’, ‘Ma’am’ or ‘Sir’ — however, the last two salutations are okay to use if you’re emailing your superior. It’s best to address your recipients formally by name.

become an inconvenience to read, especially if they are being read over phones. No one wants to spend five or ten minutes reading one email, so if it needs to be lengthy, it is a better idea to attach a word document and explain the gist of the document in the body of your email.

sTyle: How an email looks is also an important factor. Using paragraphs and/ or bullet points will not only make your email look more organised, it will also make it easier to read. Similarly, use standard fonts and never, ever USE CAPITAL WORDS — if you need to emphasise on something, use bold, underlined or italic fonts — but only when necessary. signing off: Don’t spoil a wellwritten mail by saying ‘Much love’ at the end. The best phrases to sign with are ‘Sincerely’, ‘Regards,’ or ‘Thank you’. Don’t forget to write your complete name and designation —especially when you’re sending emails to strangers or clients. Also, just before you sign-off, use the last line to either wish the person or add in a request along the lines of ‘Hoping to hear from you soon.’ It is not mandatory of course, but just ensures that your email doesn’t end abruptly.

« sos: solve our situation!

Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on...

Gynelle Alves

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

My brother is seven years younger than me and is a lovely guy, but a little immature sometimes. He recently turned 26 and moved to Mumbai to look for work. He has been staying with me till he finds a flat. He has found a job and... a girlfriend... Sis... this is Priya!

Just friends... … or so you think! He’s been your best friend for years and you do everything together, including giving each other advice on relationships. But, is there something more to your relationship that you’re missing out on? Rhea Dhanbhoora suggests taking this quiz to find out

Y

ou might have spent years trying to convince everyone around you that you’re not into your best friend, but we suggest you revisit the situation. While you could just be the best of friends, women often don’t realise when their perfect man has been around them (and into them!) all along. So, is he your best buddy, or would the two of you actually make the perfect couple? Are you already in a relationship and don’t even realise it? Take this quiz to see whether you need to re-evaluate your friendship. You’ve noticed a spark between the two of you that was missing from all your other relationships. a) Yes. b) No. You miss each other too much, even when you’re just going away for the weekend. a) Yes. b) No. When you get big news, he’s the first person you want to call. a) Yes. b) No. He’s the best listener that you know and even if you have a boyfriend, you still want to confide in him.

Mostly As

a) Yes. b) No. No one can make you laugh or cheer you up like he can. a) Yes. b) No. If you need him, he will drop absolutely everything for you and vice versa. a) Yes. b) No. People always think that the two of you are dating. a) Yes. b) No. You’re happiest when he is single and/ or feel him pulling away slightly when you’re dating someone. a) Yes. b) No. You don’t think any of his girlfriends have been good enough for him. a) Yes. b) No. You’ve slept in each other’s arms more than once. a) Yes. b) No.

Tell us why you’re not together again? For all intents and purposes, the two of you are dating already! You act like a couple, treat each other like you would treat your significant other and seem attached at the hip. If you feel even a slight spark between you, there’s no good reason to admonish him to the friend zone! That Mr. Right you were looking for? He could have been right under your nose the entire time. If you’re not interested in each other, you need to let go a little, because you will never find your dream man if you’ve already got your best friend acting like one!

I have been with my boyfriend for the past five years and we are both 27-yearsold now. Last night, we went out for a fancy dinner. I was hoping that he would propose, but nothing happened. Instead, I ended up fighting with him. Somehow, I feel like I have been hoping for a proposal every single time we go out these days and this is affecting our

relationship. I feel like I may be expecting too much from him. Am I over obsessing? — Priyam Mehta, Dadar Dear Priyam, No you are not over obsessing. It is quite normal to expect this from a relationship after a period of five years, especially if it is serious. Five years means he definitely sees a future with you. Communicating is an essential part of all relationships, so

I am a little surprised at Ronny’s choice of girlfriend. She is bleached blond, her face is five shades lighter on account of her terrible makeup skills, the first time I met her she had blue eyes and was dressed cheaply in really tacky clothes. If Ron hadn’t said sis, I swear I would have thought you were his MOM! Huh? Haha! I am JOKING! and she is a bit of a ‘rhymes with stitch’ She is trying to ‘break into modelling’ and in the meanwhile, doesn’t work. So, she has taken to lounging around my place.

!!

Mostly Bs

If you want to be more than friends, this is going to sound like bad news. But, for all the best friends out there, we’re happy to confirm that the two of you have managed to do what most people can’t — have a good, solid relationship that’s purely platonic. Even though you confide in him and tell him everything, he’s not your fall back guy for when a relationship doesn’t work out and you’re definitely not into each other. You have exactly the kind of friendship that you think you do.

« dear grace, i have a problem... Dear Grace,

HIYA!

you should talk to him about this. Don’t put any pressure on him, but just ask if the relationship is going somewhere and if in the future, he intends to take it any further. Once he clarifies this, you will be relieved. If not now, the proposal will definitely come your way sometime in the future! Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in

She is perpetually fighting with Ronny. Unless he is wooing her with presents that he can barely afford! Then she is all gushy, sweet, cutesy...

Until she feels neglected on account of him never having time for her, since he has a JOB! "I can’t take much more of her whining and brainless prattle and mostly how she treats my brother, who thinks he is in ‘love’! He is spending too much on her and every flat he looks at is out of budget, or not cool enough for La Model Girlfriend!” — Jass a) If he is in ‘love,’ nothing can be done. Let it run its course. b) Time for some tough-love. Give him a time-frame to find his own place and tell him she can’t hang around your place when he isn’t around. Break it to him gently that she is just using him. c) Are you being a little over-protective? It’s his life, for better or worse! Butt out! LAST WEEK: Soniya should pick Option C: Do you have any friends in common? If not, there’s no way to know he is not really that creepy guy! Please inform your parents, this is serious!

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, MAY 29, 2014

THERE is absolutely no safe period to have unprotected sex. Attempting to estimate when a woman is least fertile is a risky form of contraception. Ovulation happens around 14 days before the first day of the next expected date of menstrual cycle. what’s the problem? You will need to continue the foreplay till she is aroused, I would advise that you stop looking at the clock. There is no sex booster like Viagra for women. Having said that, the relationship between a husband and wife is much more than just sexual intercourse. Sharing intimacy and closeness through other meaningful ways could take your relationship to a completely different level. You are both life partners not just sexual partners, maybe it is time that both of you explore other dimensions of your married life.

Wife not interested in sex

I’m a 43-yr-old man and I'm physically and sexually very active. My wife is 44 years old and has been equally active physically & sexually, we both enjoy making love very much. But during the past 6 to 9 months she does not seem very interested in having sex despite of her having a couple of orgasm each time we make love. What I want to know is that can I give her some kind of sex booster (like Viagra for women) which is available in India without her knowledge (If she comes to know that the drug is for arousing her she will not feel very happy about making love) I do not want to force her to make love to me and do not want to seek pleasure outside my marriage. We used to make love 2-3 times a week now it takes much longer time for me to arouse her. She gets aroused after 15-20 minutes of foreplay but then she enjoys the lovemaking. Please advise. WHAT is happening is the natural phenomenon called ageing. Your wife is nearing menopause and her female hormones are declining. As a

Food Retailers Chalk Up Rs.13,000 Crore Losses CRISIL sees gestation-losses in last leg for most, peaking out at Rs.17,000 crore by 2017 By A Business Reporter

A

ccumulated losses of food retailers are estimated to have crossed Rs. 13,000 crore in the last fiscal, reveals an analysis by CRISIL Ratings of the top 10 food retailers that are in gestation phase. They accounted for ~40 % of segment revenues of around Rs. 23,500 crore last fiscal. The losses were caused by largescale expansions even as business m o d e l s were being fine-tuned. To reduce the bleeding, retailers have undertaken several initiatives, but these will yield results only gradually. Consequently, while losses will mount by about 30% over the medium term, they are likely to peak in 2017, and at least half of the 10 players breaking even by then. What keeps them going is the backing of intrepid promoters who foresee immense potential in India. Says Ramraj Pai, President, CRISIL Ratings, “These losses reflect the challenges in the food and grocery retailing vertical. Compared with other formats, food retailing is a very local business where optimal supply chains are critical to lower costs. The business also has the lowest gross margins in retailing, which leads to longer gestation periods. Players, therefore, need a lot of time and investment to perfect the model and positioning (such as the location, store size, choice of products and development of private labels), and to scale up to achieve critical mass.”

Food retailing is appealing because, despite constituting more than two-thirds of a total Rs. 25.3 trillion of sales in India, its penetration is a minuscule 2.3 % — the lowest among all formats. Also, it is difficult to be a leading player in organised retail in India without being present in food. Globally, food & grocery contribute to over 50 % of top-line for the likes of Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Tesco Plc. With losses higher and time to break-even well beyond initial estimates, retailers are under pressure to streamline operating models. Says Anuj Sethi, Director CRISIL Ratings, “Retailers are now moving away from large-scale expansions and streamlining models to achieve faster break-evens. Exits from unprofitable categories, rightsizing of stores, closure of unviable and non-performing stores, focused and calibrated expansion and a renewed focus on private labels are some of the initiatives which the analysed retailers are undertaking to achieve faster break-even.” CRISIL Ratings believes that while these initiatives will take time and investment to yield results, players will continue to expand, thereby adding to the losses. Losses for the analysed retailers are likely to peak at Rs.17,000 crore by 2017 and are expected decline thereafter as the twin benefits of size and optimised models will kick in. It believes these retailers will continue to expand backed by promoters with the wherewithal for a long ride. It estimates, that as of March 31, 2014, the 10 retailers have invested about Rs. 19,000 crore for store additions and loss funding – through direct equity infusions, loans from banks and promoters. These are likely to continue and will help multiply the top-line.

Insurers In Bind Over Mandatory Customer Bank A/c Details

By A Business Reporter

L

ife insurers including state-run behemoth LIC are finding themselves in a tricky situation over a new regulatory requirement of mandatorily seeking customer bank account details at the time of new policy sales, as premium collection also happens in cash in many cases. The new norms, prescribed by insurance sector regulator IRDA, came into affect from April 1, 2014, and make it mandatory for insurers to seek bank details of customers buying new policies. Top officials at various insurers, including Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), said they will make representations before IRDA and the government for easing of these norms, or at least giving more time for compliance, reports PTI. Insurers also collect a significant amount of insurance premiums in cash in smaller towns where banking channels are either not widely available or used. "This is specially true for smaller ticket businesses and rural locations as the cash economy is large in these places," a senior LIC official said. "Around 40% of insurance premiums come in cash and expecting all of them to have a bank account, as of today, is still premature. It would still be acceptable to the industry if the regulator makes it

mandatory for payments may be made only into customers bank accounts but keeping that as a pre-requisite acts as a deterrent," he added. A top IRDA official said they have been informed by some insurers about their apprehensions about the new norms. He, however, said that there are bank-promoted insurers also in the industry, whose 70% business come from bank customers and they face little problem on this front. The official, however, admitted that market share and reach of such insurers are limited compared to behemoth like LIC and some other private insurers. "Companies like LIC that have a huge footprint, and are present in areas where banking has not reached, would face a larger problem," an official at the state-run insurer said. As per the new norms, insurers have been asked to remit proceeds of all claims, maturity payments and any other sum due to policyholders or nominees only through electronic transfer of funds to their bank accounts. For existing customers, the life insurers have been asked to intimate their existing customers for providing bank account details by August 2014. The non-life insurers have been directed to collect bank account details of existing customers at the time of claim payments, refund or renewal.

The coal ministry has asked "CIL to expedite completion of projects and expansion of existing projects," and " prepare detailed project wise action plan to enhance production in next five year," according to an official source. The source further said that the coal behemoth has also been asked by the ministry to adopt action plan for technology development and modernisation of mines in Coal India.

RBI Asks UCBs Not To Give High Value Loans To PSUs

The Reserve Bank of India has asked urban co-operative banks (UCBs) not to grant large value loans to PSU firms saying their core purpose is to serve the low and middle income groups. RBI said it was brought to its notice that some UCBs were sanctioning loans of big amount to public sector undertakings (PSUs) by admitting them as nominal members or otherwise. "In view of the above, UCBs are advised, as a matter of principle, generally not to grant large value loans to Public Sector/Government Undertakings," RBI said in a communication addressed to UCBs.

Tell us something about the show. I will take the audience through some of the most compelling true life accounts of spooky events depicted in the show. As the narrator of 'Fear Files', I will be sharing exciting tidbits about the supernatural elements. These best episodes will unveil dark, intriguing truths from a world that we know little about… chapters from the lives of those who have experienced the other side! ‘Fear Files’ focuses on the realm of the supernatural, events that are experienced by those who have lived to tell their story. It is a journey of ordinary people who have had extraordinary experiences.

What is unique about the show? Interestingly, the show is directed by my father – the renowned actor-producer Pankaj Dheer which makes a perfect opportunity for the father-son duo to work together on small screen for the first time.

RAVEENA REPLACES FARAH KHAN

Looks like Farah Khan’s multitasking; making her movie ‘Happy New Year’ and judging Sony TV’s 'Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega' has caught up to her and now she is going to miss the pagalpanti on the show. The upcoming episode will see Anu Malik judging the show minus queen ‘Farah’. The powerhouse director is busy with the shoot of her upcoming film ‘Happy New Year’ and is unable to give sufficient time for the drama. A little birdie from the sets informed that, the channel were desperately searching for someone to step in and they found Raveena Tandon.

Were you chosen because your father is the director? With my intense brooding on screen persona, I was chosen as an apt choice as the narrator of the show, which keeps the entire nation on the edge of their seats with its spine-chilling episodes. The show’s previous anchor was Tanushree Dutta, whose contract was up for renewal, but the makers believed in the need for a male he comes back from his travels he makes it a point to surprise Poshto with new toys. Other things in the episode, cricketer, Brett Lee has a food related query for Dr Umesh. Watch 'Heavy petting-All Stars' on NDTV Good Times on June 1, Sunday at 11 am.

DUAL WEDDING CELEBRATIONS

TV actress Mrunal Thakur, who plays Bulbul in Zee TV’s 'Kumkum Bhagya', is busy with two wedding preparations in real and reel life. Her sister Lochan will get married soon and she visits her house situated in Nashik often to help with the arrangements. On the other hand, her show also has a similar wedding track currently. Says the actress, "In the show, my sister Pragya (Sriti Jha) is getting married and we are seen preparing for it. So, I am actually running around doing the same things on the shoot for Pragya and at home for my sister."

Everest avalanche on Discovery

Discovery Channel will broadcast a 90-minute programme titled 'Everest Avalanche tragedy' on May 29 at 8 pm. The programme will include unprecedented access and eyewitness accounts from the rescue and recovery efforts that took place after the avalanche struck the Khumbu Ice fall, the area is just above the Mount Everest base camp, in the morning of Friday, April 18, killing 13 and leaving three missing. “This programme is in honour of all the Sherpas who lost their lives”, said Rahul Johri, Executive Vice President & General Manager, South Asia and Head of Revenue, Pan-Regional Ad Sales and Southeast Asia, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific.

Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 7 to be tougher this season Remo, who is known for being critical in judging, said with more trained dancers on the show it becomes difficult for the panelists. "It's tough. It makes the competition cut throat. We are also left speechless at times and this time we have contestants specialised in many dance forms," he told PTI. Contestants like Shakti, Mouni are winners of a similar dance based reality show while Sophie has danced in music albums whereas VJ Andy choreographed many performances.

You have a busy film career going. So what made you accept this show? The reason I accepted to host 'Fear Files' was that it is completely different from my previous work in Bollywood so far. Till now, I have mostly done characters with a negative streak so I felt it was a good opportunity to connect with my audience through a different genre. I was instantly drawn towards the show owing to its gritty content as this show does not sensationalize the scary element and that’s what differentiates 'Fear Files'. Most importantly, I am really excited to be directed by my father as it is the first time we are working together. Hope the viewers will enjoy the thrills and chills both on 'Fear Files' and appreciate my role as the new narrator of the show. What next? I am participating in 'Fear Factor' and my film with Akshay Kumar ‘Gabbar’ is ready for release.

Palak turns SRK’s dance teacher in Farah’s next film

iku Sharda, popularly known as Palak on 'Comedy Nights with Kapil', is making a special appearance in Farah Khan's upcoming film 'Happy New Year'. The funnyman plays the dance teacher of superstar Shah Rukh Khan in the film, which is set for Diwali release. "I bagged the role from 'Comedy Nights With Kapil'. Farah saw some episodes of the show and she really liked me in it. When she came on the show she told me about the part. I am teaching dance to Shah Rukh, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Abhishek Bachchan in the film," Kiku told PTI. The stand-up comedian is elated to share the screen space with Shah Rukh. "SRK is a gem of a person. He told me that he is a keen viewer of 'Comedy Nights with Kapil' and his family records those episodes which he misses during shooting schedules." Kiku would be seen next in celebrity reality show 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa 7' and the actor said it is tough to juggle between the two. "I don't get much time to rehearse for dance everyday. At the end of the day, I get drained out. With a heavy body, it's difficult to manage but I am trying," he said. On the reality show, the actor would be seen in his female avatar of Palak because he feels the character has become his identity. "This time participants have basic rhythm and music knowledge and that make it tough for us. I have performed many a times but this is the first time my performance will be judged. I am scared," said Sophie, who has teamed up with choreographer Deepak for the show. Former Indian pacer Sreesanth, who took formal dance training till high school, said, "I had watched previous seasons of the show on YouTube closely and found that this year is going to be tough because almost all of us had dancing background." 'Zara Nachke Dikha' winner Mouni, however, said winning such reality show does not provide any edge over the competitors.

KKR skipper Gambhir back; Binny, Pankaj surprise picks for England tour

M

UMBAI: Veteran opener Gautam Gambhir was recalled while all-rounder Stuart Binny and unheralded paceman Pankaj Singh were the surprise picks in an 18-member Indian squad for the Test series against England starting in the last week of June. Injured pace spearhead Zaheer Khan and spinners Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha were the notable omissions from the squad announced by the BCCI Secretary Sanjay Patel after a marathon meeting of the selection panel here. The Sandeep Patil-led selection committee also announced the squad for a three-match ODI series against Bangladesh which would precede the tour of England. Suresh Raina would lead the 15-member squad which would be devoid of big stars such as regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma among others. Raina, incidentally, was not even a member of the Asia Cup held in

KKR storm into final with convincing win By Tapan Mohanta

K

OLKATA: Kolkata Knight Riders stormed into the final of the Indian Premier League on the back of a convincing 28-run win over Kings XI Punjab, with pacer Umesh Patel hogging the limelight with a fine display of fast bowling. Defending 164 on a slow surface that remained under cover for three days, KKR speedsters Yadav (3/13) and Morkel (2/23) shared five wickets between them, while Piyush Chawla also bowled smartly to restrict Kings XI Punjab to 135/8 in 20 overs and hand KKR a record eighth victory on the trot. Sent into bat, KKR had posted 163 for eight, riding on in-form opener Robin Uthappa's 30-ball 42. In pursuit of a second title, 2012 champions KKR will take on the winners of second qualifier in the summit clash on June 1. Orange Cap holder Uthappa once again laid the foundation with the help of four boundaries and two sixes in his 10th consecutive 40-plus

Bangladesh prior to IPL after his indifferent form in ODIs held earlier. Spin spearhead R Ashwin and allrounder Ravindra Jadeja have also been rested from the squad for Bangladesh which will play three ODIs in Mirpur on June 15, 17 and 19. Jammu and Kashmir all-rounder Parveez Rasool has found a place in the squad for Bangladesh which also marks the return of in-form batsman Robin Uthappa, who has been a prolific scorer in the ongoing IPL. The Bangladesh-bound squad features new faces in Maharashtra batsman Kedar Jadhav and left-arm spinner Akshar Patel of Gujarat. The tour of England starts from June 26 and concludes on September 7 during which the Indians will play five Tests , an equal number of ODIs and one Twenty20 International. The left-handed Gambhir's return to the Test squad was on expected lines after he rediscovered his form in the domestic circuit and has been in good touch in the ongo-

ing IPL as well despite starting with three consecutive ducks. The 32-year-old's last Test appearance for India was way back in 2012 in the home series against England. Rajasthan pacer Pankaj Singh, 29, has been rewarded for his consistent form in the gone by Ranji season during which he picked 45 wickets but his name was not in the reckoning for a place in the Test team. Team for Bangladesh: Suresh Raina (C), Robin Uthappa, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ambati Rayudu, Manoj Tiwary, Kedar Jadhav, Wriddhimaan Saha, Parveez Rasool, Akshar Patel, Vinay Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Stuart Binny, Mohit Sharma, Amit Mishra. Teams for England tour: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (C), Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Gautam Gambhir, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Ishwar Pandey, Ishant Sharma, Stuart Binny, Varun Aaron, Wriddhimaan Saha, Pankaj Singh.

MCA VP Savant to skip IPL Qualifier 2 at Wankhede

M

UMBAI: Deeply hurt by the IPL final snub, Mumbai Cricket Association's vice president Ravi Savant has decided to stay away from the Qualifier 2 being held at the associationowned Wankhede Stadium on Friday. "I have handed over my accreditation and car pass to the Cricket Board (BCCI) secretary (Sanjay Patel) and will not attend the game but all cooperation would be given by MCA for the smooth conduct of the match," Savant told PTI today. IPL governing council had shifted the June 1 T20 final from here to Bangalore's Chinnaswamy Stadium and Savant said his decision to skip the match was a per-

sonal one. "The match has been shifted without assigning any valid reason to us. We had even set aside our self-respect and decided to lift the ban on Shah Rukh Khan to attend the final as demanded," said Savant. The MCA official, who is also the vice president of the BCCI from West Zone, said he does not know what the other managing committee members of the MCA have decided on the issue. "You will have to ask them," he said. Savant also denied the charge leveled by IPL chairman Ranjib Biswal through a letter written to MCA president Sharad Pawar that he had threatened BCCI's interim president Shivlal Yadav on the issue.

BRIEF SCORES: Kolkata Knight Riders 163/8 in 20 overs [Robin Uthappa 42, Akshar Patel 2/11, Karanveer Singh 3/40] by Kings XI Punjab 135/8 in 20 overs [Wriddhiman Saha 35, Mornie Morkel 2/23, Umesh Yadav 3/13, Piyush Chawala 1/23] by 28 runs.

Playing with five bowlers makes a huge difference: Chawla By Tapan Mohanta

K

OLKATA: It's not only their inform batting line-up but also the bowling unit that has made a huge difference, Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Piyush Chawla said after they stormed into their second IPL final with a 28-run win over Kings XI Punjab in the Qualifier 1. "Most of the team goes with four main bowlers and one part-timer but we go in with five main bowlers which makes a huge difference," Chawla said after they defended 163 against a star-studded Kings XI Punjab. "Obviously people say T20 is about the batsmen but even if you put on 250 on the board, if you don't have good bowlers you can't defend that. We have got quality bowlers. Sunil (Narine) is there and

there's Morne (Morkel), one of the fastest bowlers. Shakib (Al Hasan) too plays a crucial role and then we have got Umesh (Yadav) and myself. The bunch is really good." He said the pitch at the Eden Gardens was different from the last three games. "The wicket was on the slower side, different from the last three games... If we bowl in good areas, take early wickets, we have got good bowling so we're confident. There was also Duckworth-Lewis coming into play, it was good overall." Chawla was brought in place of R Vinay Kumar to capitalise on a slow surface that had remained under cover for last three days because of incessant rain. The legspinner had figures of 1/23. "I missed out on last two games and it was much needed to come back strongly.

Top scorer Lendl Simmons of the Mumbai Indians with 67 runs to his credit plays a shot during the eliminator match of the Indian Premier League between the Chennai Superkings and the Mumbai Indians held at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. Mumbai Indians scored 173/8 in 20 overs. Chasing the target Chennai was 80/2 after 9 overs.

Because it is necessary to have bilateral cricket ties between the two countries," Akhtar told PTI. Akhtar said that he would also like to see the issue of Pakistani players in the IPL being resolved soon. B

razil goalkeeper Julio Cesar insisted Tuesday he will silence any doubters who believe coach Luiz Felipe Scolari should consider looking beyond him as the FIFA World Cup hosts target a sixth triumph. "I come in with my suitability in the position questioned, but happy and 100 per cent ready," the 34-yearold said as he settled into Brazil's tournament headquarters at Granja Comary an hour outside of Rio de Janeiro. The former Inter Milan shotstopper has been in the limelight with Scolari insisting throughout the build up to the competition that he will definitely be first choice between the sticks. But Cesar in January had to resort to resurrecting his club career in the

unlikely surroundings of Toronto after months spent in the wilderness following relegation from the English Premier League with Queens Park Rangers. A veteran of two previous World Cups, Cesar has Scolari's unwavering public support as well as a winners medal from last year's FIFA Confederations Cup, where he was designated best keeper. After rumored moves to Arsenal, Napoli, Fiorentina or a move back home to Brazil failed to materialise Cesar stayed at QPR - albeit on the sidelines, before Major League side Toronto FC came calling. "People said I was going to play in a Mickey Mouse league," Cesar said. "But I can say that the US league in the past few years has passed that of Brazil in terms of attendance - for my first

31

game we had 45,000 people in the stadium. The US league is enjoying huge growth. I conceded nine goals (in seven games) so that was very annoying." Four years ago, he was singled out for criticism as Brazil exited the World Cup in South Africa following a quarter-final loss to the Netherlands, after being caught out for the Dutch opener. Cesar, relishing the build-up to Brazil's curtain-raiser with Croatia in Sao Paulo on 12 June, insisted that he has put that behind him. "I come in (to this year's World Cup) better than in 2010, better focused, better prepared," he explained, suggesting that had Scolari not returned to the helm some 18 months ago his international career might have been over.

Calf injury rules Van der Vaart out of World Cup N

etherlands midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has been ruled out of the World Cup after the experienced international picked up a calf injury at a training camp in Portugal, the Dutch football association KNVB confirmed on Wednesday. Capped 109 times for his country, the 31-year-old Hamburg midfielder suffered the injury at a training camp for the Brazil tournament on Tuesday with KNVB saying he was not expected to recover in time to participate in the June 12-July 13 finals. Van der Vaart sat out training on Monday because of a fever before conducting a individual session on Tuesday while the rest of his team mates were preparing to leave the Algarve at the end of the camp.

It was during this session that he was injured but the extent of the tear only confirmed after medical examination in Amsterdam on Wednesday. The former Ajax, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder competed at the last two World Cup finals and was expected to a play a major role for the team in Brazil. His injury means the Dutch have lost two key midfielders in the runup to the tournament with Roma's Kevin Strootman ruled out in March through a serious knee injury. Van der Vaart had struggled with the calf injury throughout the recently concluded Bundesliga season in which his club narrowly avoided relegation.

I’ve always tried to copy Ronaldinho, Zidane: Brahimi W Deschamps: France had all the ingredients D

idier Deschamps has spoken of his delight after watching his France side beat Norway 4-0. Les Bleus ramped up their FIFA World Cup preparations with a comfortable win in Paris - a performance which energised everyone in the French game. Deschamps fed off the energy of the crowd and had plenty to smile about afterwards. "It was great," he told reporters afterwards. "The stadium was full and we'd had a good week. ONDON: Nigeria's World Cup warm-up friendly against Scotland in London is reported to be the subject of a match-fixing investigation by police. The National Crime Agency, which investigates serious and organised crime, is reported by the Daily Telegraph to have asked FIFA, world football's governing body, to issue an alert over attempts to fix the game at Fulham's Craven Cottage. The match is scheduled as a home fixture for Nigeria, who are finalising their preparations ahead of the World Cup in Brazil which starts on June 12. A spokesman for the NCA refused to comment, saying: "The NCA will from time to time provide operational detail necessary for public reassurance purposes. "It does not routinely confirm or deny the existence of specific operations or provide ongoing commentary on operational activity."
