tepping up the attack on yoga guru Baba Ramdev over his controversial remarks aimed at Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, the Congress Minister for Water Conservation, Dr. Nitin Raut, demanded that the yoga expert be booked under the Atrocities Act for his anti-dalit remarks. In a letter addressed to President Pranab Mukherjee, he stated that Baba Ramdev has caused grave affront on dalit women by remarking that Rahul Gandhi visits dalit homes and indulges in picnics and honeymoons. Meanwhile, NCP MLC Vidya Chavan too staged a protest demonstration at Azad Maidan in protest against the yoga guru's controversial remarks. Condemning the yoga guru, Raut said that Ramdev had articulated what BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi could not. He said that dalit activists across the state are agitated over the yoga guru's remarks. Two First Information Reports (FIR) have been filed against him. In his letter addressed to the President of India, Raut has insisted that the yoga guru be arrested forthwith in order to quell the rising anger among the dalit masses. Commenting on RPI leader and MP Ramdas Athawale's condemnation of Ramdev's remarks, he said that it reflected the deep divide within the BJPled 'Mahayuti'. Do you think political leaders and yoga experts have lowered the standards of the election debates? Dashrath Pawar Student Yes. Pre-election debates should be on fundamental policies, infrastructure projects, international relations and defence related issues.

Mihir Pandya BPO Executive No. Its a demand and supply game. No one will listen to a debate on international policies for more than three minutes. People like allegations and are curious about the personal lives of leaders.

BMC to buy beach safety equipment Total cost would be Rs. 2.69 crore which will help curb deaths by drowning at beaches By Khushboo Panjabi

A

fter a delay of more than five years, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has finally decided to buy high tech beach safety equipment to prevent deaths

which may occur due to drowning during the coming monsoon. The total cost of the tools, would be Rs.2.69 crore which includes advanced gear like jet skis, rescue boats, surfboards, rescue tubes and gear for lifeguards. According to civic officials, the safety equipments would reinforce the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) to provide safety on the beaches.According to the proposal, the BMC will buy six semi-inflatable rescue boats worth Rs.16 lakh each and seven jet skis worth Rs.16.74 lakh each. They will also procure equipment like jet ski operator helmets (18), spine boards (9), rescue boards/surf boards (9), rescue tubes (18), beach chairs for lifeguards (7),

nylon ropes (18), buoys (18), life support kits (9), life jackets (27) and rechargeable torches (9). The proposal will be tabled before the civic standing committee for approval on Wednesday. The corporators were continuously demanding for the these equipments but there was a delay. BJP group leader Dilip Patel said, “The city has been witnessing a rising number of drowning deaths on the beaches. Though there are lifeguards present at the beaches, lack of equipment has been proving to be a major deterrent for them to prevent these deaths.” According to civic figures, last year there were 14 deaths at the beaches due to drowning. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

studying more than 35,000 patients. The ST2 test has been a matter of discussion for the past two to three months among doctors in the country and it has been made ST2, a cardiac biomarker, is a soluble protein expressed by the heart in response to disease or injury. Unlike many other cardiac biomarkers, ST2 levels change quickly in response to changes in the patient’s condition thus helping physicians do the needful for their patients. available in India in early April by SRL Diagnostics Limited. “We have been promoting ST2 for the past few months and doctors were looking forward to it. Once we brought the technology here, the doctors started recommending it to their patients. We have already collected 100 samples for predicting chances of heart failure from across the country”, said Dr. B.R. Das, PresidentResearch & Innovation, Mentor-Molecular Pathology and Clinical Research Services, SRL Di-

agnostics Limited. Out of these 100 samples, 42 are from Mumbai. ST2 is the only marker available in India for predicting prognosis in cases of heart failure. Unlike many other cardiac biomarkers, ST2 is faster and thus helps physicians make informed decisions on the course of action to be taken and do the needful at the earliest for his patients. “This test can reduce 30-day rehospitalisation rates by 17.3 per cent and also reduce 30-day mortality rates by 17.6 per cent”, informed Dr. Das. Dr. Manish Mavani, cardiac physician at Saifee, Jaslok and Bhatia hospitals said, “This test might be useful in cases of non-specific chest pains where the cardiograph is normal because these days with cases of heart attacks on a rise, one has to be alert about chest pains”. Right now, this test can be done under prescription only but after six months, it can be used as a part of preventive healthcare checkup. The test costs Rs.1,600 and is available across India at all Fortis Labs and SRL Diagnostics Labs and its collection centres.

no reference to a mustache as a requirement. However, a senior Mumbai Fire Brigade officer who had a mustache (of course) said that his seniors had advised him to keep one for “personal safety”, so he did. Hence, he has also been telling his juniors to grow one. Better still, he gave us a reason. “When we are firefighting, it is very difficult to calculate the temperature at the fire site. Sometimes, the flames are high but the temperature is low. On the other hand, sometimes a smallish blaze can have very high temperatures at its core. In the absence of immediate judgment, it is difficult to devise a fire fighting strategy.” This is where the mustaches come in, and we are not sure if he is having a laugh. Apparently, the bit of hair on the upper lip is a kind of temperature diviner that warns firemen to back off from a dangerous site by the smell of burning hair!

Flashback to the first election Writing in The Sunday Guardian, our favourite columnist Dr. Vappala Balachandran takes a look at the past and finds lessons therein for the future. He writes: “By now our democracy has experienced 15 General Elections. It took nearly four months for the first General Elections to be completed for an electorate of 173,212,343, between October 1951 and February 1952. They chose 489 seats in the Lok Sabha from 401 constituencies in 26 states. In those days, 314 constituencies had one seat each,

86 had two seats and one in West Bengal had three seats. We had nine-part 'A' states, seven-part 'B' states and ten-part 'C' states.” This year, for the 16th general elections, there were 814,500,000, the largest number in the world, though the number of seats haven't risen proportionately. Balachandran goes on to discuss the pros and cons of the current systems but gives Dr. Ambedkar all the credit for safeguarding the process from “marauding” netas: “It was the foresight of Dr. Ambedkar which saved the

Allauddin Abdullah Shaikh is a resident of a transit camp in Bimbisar Nagar in Jogeshwari who cannot walk. He had traveled almost one kilometer on a tiny wheeled board to the polling station with a slip given by Election Commission. He crosschecked his name, address and photo twice. While going he was very happy and enthusiastic. His happiness did not last long. Our reporter met him as he came wheeling himself out of the room where the voting was being conducted. He was most upset and angry. He was not allowed to cast his vote as he did not have identification proof with him. His name, address and photo were perfect. But it did not help in the least. So why was he not carrying the crucial document with him? Allauddin said that the previous night, his house in the transit camp was ransacked by thieves. “They stole everything, even my

independence of our election process from some of our marauding state political leaders, who could have indirectly disfranchised large sections of our population, as we see even now when some stray voices are heard to exclude certain sections of the population on religious or linguistic grounds. In this he was ably supported by the late K.M. Munshi, who rejected the idea that it encroached on the states' jurisdiction: 'I would warn the members who are still harping on the same subject to remember one supreme fact in Indian history that the glorious days of India were only the days, whether under the Mauryas or the Moghuls, when there was a strong central authority in the country, and the most tragic days were those when the central authority was dismembered by the provinces trying to resist it.' ” “These prophetic words were said in 1949. The adverse results of the dispersal of Central authority are seen all over, especially in internal security.” If you want a bit more, you can always go to http://www.sundayguardian.com/analysis/centralised -non-partisan-system-makes-pollssmooth

things with her father, and talking about the responsibility young people in particular bore towards choosing the right kind of government. What made her caste the vote, was her father's wish to make her understand the responsibility of making and choosing a government. So after her father's last rites were performed, Shruti went to the polling booth. That's when our reporter spoke to Shruti who described why she was doing what she did. “I voted for my father and his wish for a better government,” she said.

By the time this appears, our favourite contemporary dancer Astad Deboo will have performed at “the most prestigious dance theatre in Stockholm (and Europe), the Dance House. While we are sure he came through with flying colours, we can also reveal that for once, he professed to feeling “very nervous.” He is there as part of the IndiaUnlimited festival of business and culture, organised by the Indian Embassy, from April 22 to 26, held completely in Stockholm as a platform to strengthen IndiaSweden connections and partnerships in all areas. Earlier on the week, there was another performance by Deboo, with his Manipuri Pungcholom drummers, and as can be expected, they created a sensation. Then on Saturday, Astad was off to Gothenburg from where he returned to give his performance at the Dance House last night. Then it is off to Riga for another solo performance, and finally a bit of free time. On May 3, he will take a boat to

When you are tempted to froth at the mouth at all those who did not bother to exercise their right to franchise, think instead of Shruti Mishra (18), who lost her father on the eve of the election in Mumbai. With the force of her own will and because she knew it was father's wish, she went ahead to cast her vote. On April 23, late at night, Shruti lost her father to ill health. Yet this young girl, sunk in mourning, traumatised with grief, did not hesitate to do what she considered her duty. She had been discussing

To have an insight of how many such cases were held by the Election Commission (EC), RTI activist Anil Galgali filed a query with the Chief Election Officer (CEO) seeking information about the status of cases filed before during the past three LS polls. Interestingly, in a reply to the query, the GAD (General Administration Department) under the CEO replied that, all the records of actions taken on violations in the past elections have been destroyed in fire incident at Mantralaya in 2012. Five persons were killed and several others injured, besides loss of many files, in the fire accident at the state secretariat. Offices of Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar too were gutted in the blaze. Galgali had filed a query with the CEO of Maharashtra on April 7, 2014 seeking information about cases registered on candidates for violations of various 'Code of Conduct' during past three LS elections and also sought to know how many MP's elections were set aside and re-elections conducted in

those constituencies. Replying to this, Shirish Mohod, Under Secretary and Public Information Officer (PIO) in the Chief Electoral Office informed that “All the files and records pertaining to query have been destroyed in the massive fire incident in Mantralaya which took place on June 21, 2012. Hence the office has no records to give information regarding the query.”Speaking to the ADC, Galgali said, “It is very unfortunate to note that

despite the orders of the Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra to reconstruct all the files destroyed in the fire, the GAD looking into the election work have ignored the restoration work. Once elections are over, strong actions need to be taken on the violation of code of conduct by defaulting candidates, this will act as a strong detterant for further violations by candidates hence forward.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

he state government is standing firm on its decision to not increase the fare of long-awaited Metro trains in Mumbai. Mumbai Metro One authorities had put forth a proposal to increase fares, citing escalation in project and operation costs, from the minimum of Rs.9 to Rs.22 and the maximum Rs.13 to Rs.33. Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) officials said that price had been already increased Rs.6 to Rs.9, so no additional fare hike would be allowed. Railway Safety Commissioner is schedule to inspect the metro trains and certify it safe after his inspection shortly. After that, the Metro will be open to the city.

he police have arrested three persons in connection to the murder including the building watchman and a male servant who used to work on the floor above the victim's house. Last Thursday, the Versova police got a call from the members of the Beach Classique Apartment society informing them that the Vimla Jaiswal was found lying dead. The police arrived at the spot and took her body into their custody. On the basis of the primary investigation, detectives suspected she may have died naturally because there were no external injury marks visible on her body. It was only after the after medical report came out that the police converted the accidental death report into a murder case and began investigations. The Varsova police rounded up all the inside and outside personnel who visit the society regularly. Their investigations revealed that the on Thursday morning, the sweeper of building heard some noises from inside the flat. He suspected that someone was present inside her flat. On the basis of his statement, the police collected CCTV footage of the society and thoroughly checked the entry and exit of the people between 8.30 am to 9.00 am. In this time gap, it was found that a male servant

Sherbahadur Lalitkumar Sahib (32) who used to work on the 11th floor was spotted entering the society twice. They took him into custody and later he confessed to the crime. According to Senior Police Inspector V. Parmale from Varsova police station, “We have arrested three persons in the Vimla Jaiswal murder case. They have been identified as Dharmendra Satyaprakash Singh who used to visit the building to wash vehicles, Sherbahadur Lalitkumar Sahib who was working as a male servant on the 11th floor and Santosh Sharma (42) who was working as the building watchman.” Their confession revealed that, they had drawn the plan to kill and rob the woman about two months ago, the the opportunity never arrived. Finally on Thursday, they went into her flat to rob her. But when they spotted the sweeper, they strangulated her resulting in her death. Parmale added that they were supposed to break the locker but they decamped with only the gold chain. The police added that, after the incident, all the accused carried on with their usual jobs in the society to divert the police attention away from them. The deceased Vimla was staying alone in the flat she did not have any progeny or spouse. The complainant in this case was her brother Subhash Jaiswal who stays separately.

ess than eight hours after four men robbed a 30-year-old businessman near Vasai-phata on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway, a police team led by Assistant Police Inspector R.L. Puri apprehended the four robbers from Nalasopara late on Sunday night. According to the police, four bike-borne robbers accosted Jeetendra Mithalal Jain (30) as he emerged out of a local highway eatery at about 3:30 am on Sunday. After brutally assaulting him, the four fled with his valuables worth Rs.1.37 lakh including cash, a gold chain and a high-end mobile phone. A profusely bleeding Jain, who managed to note the registration number of one of the bikes, registered a complaint with the Valiv police station early on Sunday morning. A police team, led by lady cop API Puri immediately launched a search operation and activated her informer network to track the bike used by the miscreants, which was traced to Nalasopara. The owner of the bike turned out to be Amit Singh (29). After rounds of sustained interrogation, Singh confessed to the crime and revealed the names of his accomplices – Uday Singh Chauhan (22), Suraj Bachhu Singh (19) and Nagesh Radhekrisjna Oza (23). The police

API R.L. Puri nabbed them and recovered a major part of the stolen booty from their possession. Not ruling out the involvement of the four in similar crimes in and around the region, API Puri said, “ The accused, who have been booked under section 394 of the IPC, were produced before the Sessions Court, Vasai which remanded them to police custody till May 2”.

Echoing Jeetendra’s sentiments, the superstar stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma seemed emotionally euphoric. “For me, it’s a crowning glory and a shagun (blessing) to get an award named after Phalke-saab, the

Father of Indian Cinema, especially because my big-screen film-debut is also on my future agenda,” insists Kapil. While Juhi Chawla gets the Phalke award for her histrionics in a negative shades role in ‘Gulabi Gang’, Farhan is being honoured for his authentic performance in ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’.

COULD GO ANY WAY? Slight dip in final voting percentage gives BJP-Sena the jitters as it throws field wide open By Prashant Hamine

T

he overall final voting percentage for all the 48 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state has seen an increase from 50.67 percent in 2009 to 60.42 percent at the end of the third and final phase of polling on April 24, a rise of 9.75 percent. However, with the Election Commission of India (ECI) revising the tentative voting percentage on April 24, the voting percentage for the 6 Lok Sabha constituencies of Mumbai which was then 52.66 percent came down to 51.68 percent, a drop of 0.98 percent. The dip in final voting percentage in Mumbai has given some jitters in the opposition BJPShiv Sena camp. Congress Minister for Water Conservation Dr Nitin Raut argued that the late evening voter turn out in the state especially in Vidarbha favors the Congress. Although the revised voting

percentage in Mumbai has seen a slight dip, the overall voting percentage of 51.68 percent on April 24 is still higher when compared to 2009 voting percentage of 41.40 percent, a rise of 10.28 percent. For the BJP, the final voting percentage of 49.37 percent in Mumbai NorthCentral is not a good sign and does give a ray of hope for the beleaguered Congress. However, the overall increase in voting percentage belies the oft held notion that a lower voter turnout tends to favor the Congress. The abnormally high voter turnout has thrown the field wide open. The final revised voting percentage for the 6 Lok Sabha constituencies of Mumbai as compared to 2009 voting percentage and the rise in voting percentage is as follows: Mumbai North 51.67%, a rise of 9.04% (2009 – 42.62%), Mumbai NorthWest – 50.56%, a rise of 6.64% (2009 – 43.92%), Mumbai North-East – 52.76% , a rise of 10.38% (2009 – 42.37%), Mumbai North-Central – 49.37%, a rise of 9.74% (2009 – 39.63%), Mumbai SouthCentral – 53.28%, a rise of 13.73% (2009 – 39.55%) and Mumbai South – 52.49%, a rise of 12.17% (2009 – 40.31%).

Ponder awhile... “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, concerned citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” — Margaret Mead

Avoidable death of a schoolgirl I

n Mumbai, pothole problems mostly occur during the monsoon. During the rains, road contractors get busy and cover potholes again and again and claim money. The citizens complain but nothing happens. In fact, the BMC wants these complaints so they can justify setting apart more money for covering potholes. What is surprising is that a pothole in Mumbai is not small. It is a huge, deep pool of dirty water. Accidents occur: cars and motorbikes are involved and quite a few are injured and there are some deaths also. The BMC says potholes are unavoidable. In areas near Mumbai, potholes are there on the roads throughout the year. In places like Kalyan and Ulhasnagar potholes which occur during the monsoon are not covered. There is some protest in Ulhasnagar following the death of a 16-year-old who was being taken to school on a scooter. People are demanding the resignation of the municipal commissioner. An NCP leader has said that there is large-scale corruption in all departments of the municipality. The same contractors are getting road contracts. If they are barred, they change the name of company and get contracts again under the new name. The former mayor of Ulhasnagar has asked for action against the commissioner. Where is the money going? The roads here are terrible with potholes everywhere. The authorities should take prompt action against those who are responsible for the girl’s death. Next month, the monsoon is expected to arrive. National weather experts have predicted sub-normal rains. They however could be totally wrong – as it has been proved again and again. It is futile to expect pothole free roads in the city. Like in Ulhasnagar, there is evidently corruption in Mumbai too. Potholes have become permanent part of the monsoon scenario in Mumbai.

I

get many telephone calls almost every day from Pakistan and a few from Bangladesh to inquire about the polling in the Lok Sabha elections. Their fear is that Narendra Modi might be India’s next Prime Minister and destroy the democratic polity which they envy. I hope Modi does not head the next government. True, most opinion polls give the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP and Modi, a clear majority. But their tally is unreliable because there is not even a ripple, much less a wave, in favour of Modi in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala or even in Odisha. Even in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, where regional parties sway the voters, the BJP’s showing may be poor. As for the other parts of the country, the intemperate language used by certain leaders, blessed by the RSS, is alienating the intelligentsia and those sitting on the fence.

Hindutva person heads India. Modi’s speeches, however jingoistic, have not mentioned Pakistan. But he continues to use development as a cover to hide his communal agenda. Some believe that Modi may face the reality of the country’s diversities and turn out to be another Atal Behari Vajpayee, the most popular Indian leader in Pakistan. Whatever is Modi’s agenda, he cannot afford to be on bad terms with the neighbouring Pakistan. He may well initiate the talks which have not moved after the terrorists’ attack on Mumbai on November 26, 2008. Modi and the BJP, whatever their rhetoric, realise that a working relationship with Islamabad is in the interest of New Delhi. Pakistan, where the shadows of fundamentalism are lengthening, is in the midst of attack by extremists on the media, bold and behind the democratic forces. Hamid Mir, an

Crying over spoken words It has become a fashion in election rallies to threaten the Muslims and then say that the leaders have been misquoted or that their remarks have been picked up out of context. It was good to see the BJP expressing strong disapproval against the party’s provincial leader who said that those who did not support Modi would be sent to Pakistan. The party would have earned credibility though, if it had ousted the leader from its organisation. However, the comment by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that he would rather go to Pakistan than stay quiet against Modi is immature in nature. Moreover, the BJP and its mentor RSS are misreading the people’s response. They do not want to be divided into Hindus and Muslims. The society does not want a person whose politics is divisive and whose thinking may well be authoritarian. I believe that Modi would not be able to disturb pluralism whatever the RSS and the BJP may say. His complicity in the anti-Muslims riots in 2002 cannot be hidden even though a magistrate court in Gujarat has given him a clean chit. As the state’s Chief Minister, he is overall responsible and has certain obligations to fulfill. The security of minorities is important. He even refuses to say sorry, much less seek forgiveness. A few days ago when he had an opportunity to express regret, he refused to do so. Still there is every possibility that a pro-

and pluralistic society in India is not playing its role in the region. There is too much of tit for tat. Our foreign ministry has officials who have a particular mindset on Pakistan and take the narrative to the partition days for their chauvinistic stance. The youth is especially bewildered. They want employment or openings in business that a big country like India can provide. What hampers progress in that direction is the enmity between the two countries. People are not to be blamed, the establishments and intelligence agencies are. The few callers from Bangladesh did not doubt India’s secular credentials but the prospects of Modi’s success made them unhappy. Despite the growth of Jammiat-iIslami in their own country, the Bangladeshis have seen how secularism during the liberation days has got eclipsed. They have never imagined that the fundamentalists, who were against the liberation of Bangladesh, would one day be so brazen faced that they would destroy Hindus’ temples as it is happening in Pakistan.

Will religion rule us?

BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar independent journalist, was injured by the bullets fired by the fanatics. However, the people are increasingly feeling that normal relations with India will give a fillip to democracy and liberal thoughts. A Pakistani student from Oxford met me at my residence a few days ago. He had visited Pakistan and felt no hesitation in suggesting that Islamabad should normalise relations with India. This was the only alternative his country had because of the menace of the Taliban and the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan. His regret—and mine too—was that even known liberals preferred to remain quiet. I told him that India was also a prey to that. A soft Hindutva was contaminating more and more people, I said in reply. We both agreed that there was no go from good, amicable relations between the two countries. My disappointment is that a democratic

I think that the revival of religion, which is taking place even in the west, is bound to be duplicated in the subcontinent. India is a target of Hindutuva forces. They would want the country to be Hindu rashtra. But this is not possible because the people of different faiths have lived together for centuries. Hindus and Muslims have shared the land for more than one thousand years. Regretfully, there have been communal riots. The recent happenings in Muzzafarnagar in UP remind us that we live on the edge. The victims have returned home and the business is as usual. All realise that they are Indians first and Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs later. The feeling of Indianness binds north with south and east with west. The spirit of accommodation and the sense of tolerance are lessening because of parties like the RSS-BJP and the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra. Yet the constitution has brought about unity. The current Lok Sabha election testifies the faith of Indians in parliamentary democracy. One has to see how strong this feeling remains if and when Pakistan and Bangladesh come to be dominated by the fundamentalists. Modi’s supporters are aping them. Those believing in a pluralistic society should realise that their fight will begin if the country takes a right turn.

inpoche made the following comments on the importance of speaking kindly. Your decisions are correct but the problem is the way they are expressed – with harsh words and anger. These are extra and unnecessary; they create problems. Of course, someone doing wrong needs to have it explained to him or her, but with compassion and no negative feeling. You should use only kind words, even though you are saying that what they did was wrong. Rinpoche gave the following advice to a man who works as a driver for a Dharma center, who complained of being very angry with his family and asked Rinpoche for some mantras to help him. “My dear Tony, You have recognised that anger arising is not good and that you must do something about it. You’re responsible for stopping that problem. Even this is progression toward peace and happiness. Without this first discovery, there is no day-to-day, moment-to moment peace for you and others. The more you can stop getting angry and lessen your anger, the more you bring peace and happiness to all living beings, particularly the human beings, animals, and so forth in this

world. All six billion people in the world get that much more peace and happiness and the billion people in your country get that much more peace and happiness. Of course, there is no question about your family, neighbours, and you. If anger is completely eliminated through meditation and by collecting merit, you stop harming all beings, not only

MATTER & SPIRIT in this life but in all future lives, bringing them peace and happiness. It is incredible that you, one person, can offer this service to countless human beings. You can see your family as your great, spiritual guru. This is what the Buddha said: the one you call enemy, who makes you get angry, is your spiritual guru. Why? Because he or she teaches you how to practice patience. Then, you train your mind in patience regarding that person. The only one who can help you put that into practice is someone who has anger toward you. You don’t have this opportunity to practice with friends, strangers, or buddhas, who have no anger. So, these people are the great teachers; they help you to eliminate anger and stop harming oth-

ers. So many sentient beings then stop receiving harm and receive benefit, peace, and happiness. Without anger there is harmony and peace in the family, in the lives and hearts of others, and also in your heart and life. So, you can see that those who are angry with you or criticise you, those who insult you with their speech or beat you with their body, are most precious and kind. You see they are the kindest ones in your life. If you get angry you create negative karma and that creates hell and suffering. If you don’t have anger, attachment, and ignorance, there is no hell. This means those beings are helping you to learn about anger and to practice patience. They are your protectors, protecting you from rebirth in the hell realms, where one has to experience the heaviest suffering for so many eons. Therefore, when you have the conditions to get angry and it’s about to happen, be aware of the great dangers that could befall you, of hell and all the sufferings. If you get angry, it also makes many other people engage in anger. By getting angry back at you, they can also be born in hell instead of gaining a higher rebirth in their next life. — Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche

Why should Manmohan feel sad? I fail to understand as to why the PM should feel saddened by the act of his step-brother joining the BJP. Within the Congress Party itself, there are the following instances of family members practicing different ideologies: Late Rajmata Vijaya Raje, son Madhavrao Scindia, daughter Vasundhara Raje, grandson Jyotiraditya, all professing two different ideologies but retaining the family warmth and affection. precedent is being set and the possibility of this trend continuing in future cannot be altogether ruled out. The needle of suspicion for this kind of dark deed points towards the infamous uncle-nephew duo in our midst, the younger one having gained notoriety for his readiness to urinate in the dam, and, recently, denying water to voters if they do not vote for him. This audacious approach must be nipped in the bud. Apart from denying the legitimate voters their rightful franchise, the corrupt government seems to want to leave the legacy behind, which has been their only strong point, and eventually proving to be their undoing.

matches are played in our backyard. Mumbai having lost all the matches without a fight now hope to turn the tables when they play in Mumbai. Thus we depend on home wicket rather than abroad to win matches. But overall, the viewership for IPL cricket has been going down.

TRP DECLINING: Cricket fans are now looking out for other means of entertainment on television than the short format of the game. TRP for the current summer slam IPL 7 is going from bad to worse. The IPL viewership figures have been down. It is not surprising and may go down still further by the month end. Public response to the Indian Premier League seems to be going on a downward trend. Marked slump is noticed in the television viewership for the T-20 extravaganza. From the statistics available for the opening ceremony and the first 17 matches showed a marked decline and the stadium stands are empty in UAE. During hot sum-

mer months cricket fans don't want to venture out and see matches in the stadiums. In the same way, the TV viewership is coming down drastically as the cricket fans have other interests during the prime slot in television. However, it is too early to come to a conclusion, but there could be other reasons as well. Chennai Super Kings in this form of the game was very good for six seasons. Kings XI Punjab is doing extremely well with cent per cent winning record so far. We hope to see better response when

IF there is overdose of cricket then we can find that the particular game will be losing its followers. In India the game of cricket is a religion but betting scams and fixing scandals all put paid the hopes of fans seeing a match with great interest. IPL cricket is not an exception to this. The organisers are trying their best to bring some clout to these matches played in UAE by taking the game up to the last over and some of the matches are getting over off the last ball of the match. Despite all the hype, hoopla and hysteria IPL is losing its television viewers and the game is losing its ardent lovers. We can find this from the streets of Mumbai, when people used to queue up and watch matches displayed in TV showrooms and on giant screens at hotels and restaurants. But the game is losing its shine even though it is taken to a far off place only to be brought back to India during the second part and after election results are announced. — Jayanthy S. our months after the Sessions Court ordered a retrial of highprofile Bollywood actor Salman Khan's hit-and-run case of 2002, with all evidence and witnesses to be re-examined, the retrial in the case began on Monday at the sessions court with a witness deposing before the court. Khan faces the charge of running his Toyota Land Cruiser over a group of persons sleeping on a footpath outside a bakery in suburban Bandra on September 28, 2002, killing one and injuring four others. The case has been dragging on for

over a decade and took a twist last year when the magistrate, after examining 17 witnesses, held that the charge of culpable homicide was made out against Khan and referred the matter to a sessions court, as cases under these offences are tried by a higher court. On December 5 last year, sessions court Judge D.W. Deshpande, while accepting Khan's plea for a retrial after he was charged under Section 304 (2) of the Indian Penal Code (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), ordered the re-trial on the ground that the witnesses had not been examined in the context of aggravated charge. punishment under this section is 10 years in prison. During the hearing on the first day of the re-trial on Monday, Samba Gowda, the panch witness, was the first one to depose in the court. He told prosecutor Jagannath Kenjalkar that he had drawn the 'Panchnama' of the articles seized by police on the day of the incident. “It was a big car involved in the accident and the police had reached the spot along with him. The car had rammed into a laundry and its bumper had hit the shutter of the shop. I saw glass pieces, number plate of the car and bumper parts lying on the spot. These articles

were seized by the police and a panchnama was drawn by me. I can identify the articles collected by police from the place of accident”, Gowda told the police. Two more witnesses were discharged as they had admitted the panchnamas drawn by them. The Public Prosecutor said that even as the prosecution has submitted a list of 64 witnesses, it would not examine all of them. The court also asked Salman to remain present on May 6 when the eye witnesses, who were injured in the mishap, would be examined by the prosecution. Legal experts opined that the eye-

Salman Khan witnesses in any case are most crucial to the prosecution's case as they may be asked to identify Salman in the court as the person who was driving the car the day of the occurrence of the mishap. The witness, who deposed on Monday, were asked to come again on May 2 to identify the articles which were seized by police in his presence. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

rate over the massive deletions in the voter list of Mira Bhayandar, the BJP-led NDA alliance will launch a protest agitation in the form of a 'City-Bandh' on May 4 (Sunday). The Election Commission (EC) had deleted around 1.20 lakh names from the electoral rolls of two assembly segments - MiraBhayandar (145) and Ovala-Majiwada (146), which fall under the Thane parliamentary constituency. However, scores of people who are still living in the region and had registered as voters including two sitting BJP corporators in the Mira

Bhayandar Municipal Corporation Geeta Jain and Pratibha Patil, too did not figure on the voters’ list. Sensing a political conspiracy in the entire deletion process, BJP district president Narendra Mehta has demanded strict action against officials responsible for goof-up and a re-poll before the results are declared on May 16. “The fundamental right of voting has been deliberately snatched away from the eligible electorate of the region and the figures are monumental. While some had stamps saying “deleted” against their names, others found their names mysteriously missing from the vot-

ers list”, Mehta said. Similar sentiments were echoed by Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik and Republican Party of India (A) District President Devendra Shelekar. “Most of these people had voted for the municipal elections in 2012 and despite that, their names vanished during the Lok Sabha polls. The election officials responsible for this deletion should be booked for criminal negligence”, Sarnaik said. The Mira-Bhayandar and Ovala-Majiwada assembly segments registered a voter turn-out of 54.69 and 51.45 per cent respectively.

pen manholes are a menace in most of the city roads. As the iron lids of these manholes are stolen by drug addicts and thieves who sell it to scrap dealers, civic authorities have resorted to concrete lids to cover these holes. However, these concrete lids also get stolen by miscreants. One can see many such open manholes on the Eastern Express Highway between Amar Mahal and Kurla Signal near Postal Colony bus stop. C.V. Manian, an ADC reader informs, “There are many such open manholes without cover. Most of these are on the Eastern Express Highway, between Amar Mahal and Kurla Signal. For reasons known only to BMC, the manhole covers have never been placed. This could result in death due to falling in the drains. One such manhole is near the Postal Colony bus stop.” “Similarly, the footpath on the opposite side of MAA Hospital was recently paved with tiles, but the job has been done in a haphazard manner. Even now, after two months, the work has not been completed. Piles of tiles are left on the footpath, causing obstruction to pedestrians. Also one of the drain covers is broken and if someone steps on this by mistake, it will collapse and will lead to an accident. Apparently, neither municipality, nor the ward office or anyone else is bothered,” Manian adds further. When ADC team went to the spot at Eastern Express Highway, it found out many open manholes at the stretch. Besides that the team also found that an FOB connecting east and west side of Eastern Express Highway near postal colony stretch is in a very bad shape. The tiles have completely given away

on the steps of the FOB which again is risky not only for the aged but for the young too. Speaking to ADC, Suprada Phaterphekar, the area corporator said, “Regarding missing manhole covers, I have already written to Assistant Engineer of PWD in Chembur as it comes under their jurisdiction. He promised to look into the matter. However, the footpath and road opposite side of MAA Hospital has recently been done with tiles and new paver blocks. The area is clean without any tiles or bricks lying around on the footpath. Manholes are also properly covered.” ADC even tried to contact PWD officials in Chembur. An official from Assistant Engineer’s section on condition of anonymity said that he will forward the message to the concerned sub-engineer.

fitness >> Push-ups may seem daunting, but they are a great way to get in shape

From your chest and core to your shoulders and back, push-ups are one of the best exercises to help you get a fit, toned upper body. And, the best part is that you can do them anywhere without needing any equipment. Dev Goswami & Shirley Mistry give you the perfect pushup guide, with explanations of the various types of push-ups for people with different fitness levels

I

f you’ve been working out for a while, you know that pushups have several benefits. But, did you know that there are several different variants that will help tone your entire body instead of just your core? Continue reading as we tell you about the different kinds of push-upss.

FOR THE BEGINNER There is no shame in starting small. In fact, we suggest that if you haven’t exercised much before, starting small is exactly what you should be doing. So, take a look at these three, easy push-ups to get yourself going before you take the intensity a notch higher.

OFF a wall

Benefits your chest, biceps and shoulders. l If you haven’t done push-ups before, this is the one to start with. Stand around three feet away from a wall with your arms outstretched. l Keep your arms shoulder width apart and place your palms against the wall, so that your arms are parallel to the floor. l Now, stand on your toes and lean in towards the wall, without bending your back or your legs. Hold this position for a few seconds before you raise yourself back up. l Use the wall as resistance to help push yourself back to the starting position. l Once you have mastered this exercise, replace the wall with a sturdy table and repeat. This will prepare you for the standard push-up.

THE sTaNdaRd pusH-up

Benefits your shoulders, triceps, upper arms and abs. l Lie on your stomach and prop yourself up on your palms, placing them flat on the floor, slightly wider than a shoulder width apart. l Keep you feet as close together as possible and dig your toes into the floor to support your lower body. l Next, begin lowering your body (keep your body weight on your palms) and bring your chest as close to the floor as possible without touching it. rotational PuSh-uPS

Benefits your shoulders, triceps, arms, abs and oblique muscles. it also improves your balance. l Do a standard push-up. l When you return to the starting position, rotate your body so that your right arm lifts overhead, then tilt your body towards the right. l Your body should form a T shape, with both your arms forming the top of the T and the rest of your body forming the bottom half of the alphabet. l Return to the normal push-ups position. l Do another push-ups, return to the starting position and rotate your body so that your left arm is mid-air and your body is facing the left.

>> It is a good idea to perform pushups under the guidance of a trainer in order to ensure that you are doing it right

a notCh hiGher Once you have mastered the basics of a simple push-ups, these exercises take it one level higher. However, just like we asked you to start slow, you don’t have to increase your pace with these. Doing these push-upss slowly actually makes them more of a challenge and so, they will help you to lose more fat. Regardless of how many years you've been working out for, it would be a good idea to have a trainer oversee your workout for the first few days while you attempt these push-ups:

Your back should be straight. l Lower your chest towards the floor — go as low as you can without losing balance. l Raise yourself up again. Pause for half a second and repeat.

While all exercises must be performed carefully, these are a little too extreme to be done at home. We put together a list of some of the craziest push-ups: explosive push-ups: Have you ever harboured a dream of flying? Well, then these push-ups will pique your interest. They involve pushing off the ground with so much force, that your upper body launches into the air and your hands lift off the ground. It is especially dangerous for your wrists because you could land with a thud and injure them. explosive full body: If basic, explosive push-ups weren't dangerous enough, this one definitely is. >> There are several methods to test if the food you eat has been adulterated. Read our article to find out what you can do

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, APRIL 29, 2014

No, we aren’t talking about an unsavoury personality trait. We’re urging you to be a know-it-all — when it comes to food adulteration! Shirley Mistry tells you about some commonly adulterated foods

ven if you have been shopping for groceries from a trusted shop or supermarket for several years, food adulteration can creep into your food, without you realising it. If you thought that the days when you had to worry about something being added to your flour or milk were over, you need to take a closer look at the produce and spices that you consume, as adulteration is still a rampant issue in our country.

E

spice rack can be adulterated all too easily. While non-permitted colours, saw dust, dirt, grit and red brick powder are used to adulterate chilli powder, lead chromate is found in adulterated turmeric. In some cases, coriander powder is said to have been adulterated by powdered dung and asafoetida can be adulterated by adding powdered substances that are earthy in colour. Also, grass seeds coated with colour are used to create whole cumin.

WHAt IS At RISK?

teSt It oUt

While no one knows the full extent to which adulteration takes place, there are several ways to adulterate most of the food items that you consume on a daily basis. Take a look at some of the most easily adulterated foods: olive oil: You thought you were being smart about your food choices by switching over to olive oil. But, we urge you to pick only the best brand, because it is easy to adulterate olive oil with canola oil or palm oil and then add an olive oil scent to it. Ghee: Do you remember the outrage a few decades ago, when people realised that Vanaspati was packed with so many transfats, that it was literally death on a plate? Back then, switching over to ghee was considered to be a safer alternative. However, several small shops have recently been found passing off Vanaspati as ghee by adding a ghee essence to it. Honey: The bottle of honey that you devour every morning could be sugar syrup spiked with a scent to give it honey's distinctive fragrance. The more processed the honey is, the more difficult it becomes to tell the difference between adulterated and pure honey. Milk: There is just so much that can go wrong with milk, it’s extremely terrifying. Apart from diluting it with water, it can be contaminated with glucose, skim milk powder (mixed with water to bulk up quantities), urea and even detergent. In 2012, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India collected samples of milk from across the country and found that 68.4% of these samples were adulterated. Wheat flour or atta: Dirt, white sand and sometimes, even starch, is added in to bulk up your wheat flour. This makes it very unhealthy and also quite dangerous to consume. Spices: The most trusted spices on your

If the techniques to adulterate these common foods has given you a royal fright, get to work straight away by performing these simple tests to see how safe you are: l Rub cumin seeds in your palm. If the colour comes off, you know that they are grass seeds. l Put a spoonful of coriander powder in a bowl of water. The dung will float to the top and give out a distinctive, foul smell. l Put your jar of ghee in the freezer overnight. If it is ghee it will solidify, but, if it is Vanaspati masquerading as ghee, the oil will not freeze. l To check if your asafoetida is pure, pour some into a bowl of water. The adulterants will settle at the bottom and the asafoetide will float to the top. l Always buy the most organic honey you can find, since it is hard to adulterate it in its organic state. l When you find a good deal on extra-virgin olive oil, remember to research the brand well before you make your purchase. l While buying spices, always look for the Agmark or ISI mark on the products as these specify authenticity.

RepoRt It! Food adulteration is a crime in India under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act of 1955. However, incidents such as the epidemic of dropsy in New Delhi in 1998 (due to widespread consumption of mustard oil), are proof that many food retailers and manufacturers get away with adulteration because of weak implementation of this law. The government has enacted the Food Safety and Standards Act in August 2006 and a Food Safety Authority is also being established to ensure that produce matches global standards. In case you find any adulteration in the packaged foods you purchase, we urge you to take it up with your local consumer court.

« food combinations: turmeric + blacK pepper We’ve got another great food combination for you to add to your list! Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you why using turmeric and black pepper together is a good idea and why they are such a power packed combination

T

umeric, more popularly known as haldi in India, is known for its flavourful aroma, the tanginess it adds to Indian meals and of course, its bright yellow colour, that can leave your fingers stained. And then there's black pepper — a necessity in all your meals. Most Indian dishes will include both spices, so you’re already getting the nutrients from this power-packed duo. If your meals don’t include this combination yet, read on to see why they should. Turmeric has several health benefits,

including anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. It protects you from cancer, fights tumours and is an all-round health improving agent. However, it doesn’t have enough of what is called a bio-availability when it is consumed alone. This is the proportion of the spice that enters your circulation, in order for it to have an active effect. This is where black pepper comes in to save the day. Black pepper contains piperine, which enhances turmeric’s bio-availability. The curcumin (a polyphenol) in the turmeric has a

large amount of health benefits when the two are eaten together. When they’re combined, the pain helps to control obesity and also to fight high cholesterol levels and diabetes. This occurs because turmeric and pepper help change blood glucose and body weight, as well as control bad cholesterol. They also help relieve gastic mucosal damage and contain several antioxidants that can help improve your memory and protect it from a range of cognitive impairments.

Remember that just like any other food, too much of a good thing can turn into a bad thing. Consuming too much of this combination can slow down your liver, cause nausea and dizziness and even lead to cases of indigestion. Pregnant women should also avoid the combination since it might interfere with their system. But, there’s no problem adding both turmeric and black pepper to your food — so go ahead and make the most of this.

start eating healthily consult a doctor If you have been eating tiny portions for a while now and can't see the sense behind eating bigger portions, visit a doctor who will tell you the ideal portions of the foods you eat on a daily basis. start small If you want to make a step-by-step change, start off with a meal a week. Since your body is used to tiny portions it may not respond well to normal sized

meals instantly. So, start off by moving to a regular portion of one meal a week. Start off with breakfast, move on to lunch in the second week and then dinner in your third week. This should give your body sufficient time to adapt to the changes in your food patterns.

Ban tHe internet No, we don't want you to give up your Facebook account. But, when it comes to anything diet related, do not consult the internet. Diets like the cheese cube one are fads and often meant as a joke! People who follow and propagate them are not only harming themselves, but also putting out inaccurate information for others to read. Do not fall for fads and

only try out any new diet after consulting with a doctor.

indulge in your cravings If you want to eat a tiramisu every once in a while, go ahead and eat it, or split one with a friend. Satisfying your cravings is important because periodically, your body needs these nutrients too. Also, curbing your cravings all the time will only make you unhappy and cranky and the next time you get a chance to eat the rich food of your choice, you will end up overeating it; thus flushing all your good work down the drain. Instead, eat small portions regularly. You will be happier without compromising on your health drastically.

Daily Dangers

We’re sure that you know about the dangers of being exposed to toxic chemicals outdoors. You might think that you aren’t being exposed to such chemicals in the safe confines of your home, but after reading this article, you won’t be so sure, says Dev Goswami while air fresheners contain toxic chemicals such as petroleum distillates (they irritate and inflame body tissues). To stay safe, try not to use too many products and find natural alternatives for the products that you use regularly. And, when you’re dealing with laundry detergent and dish washing soap, always wear thick gloves to prevent your skin from absorbing the chemicals or dyes present in them.

Fish Wait, what?! Isn’t fish supposed to be good for your health? It is, but an overconsumption of fish can put you at risk of ingesting mercury. Just like with BPA, there aren’t any set standards to find out how much mercury is too much for your body. But you should keep your consumption of fish to twice or three times a week. However, not all types of fish contain mercury. Shrimp, tuna, salmon and catfish are all known to have low levels of mercury. On the other hand, fish such as shark, swordfish and king mackerel contain high levels of this metal. And as to why you should be taking care in the first place: studies have shown that mercury damages the nervous system as well as your cardiovascular health. Pregnant women are most at risk, since even small amounts of mercury can damage the nervous health of the foetus and can lead to developmental and growth delays.

L

et’s start with a question — what is the simplest way to ensure that you aren’t being exposed to dangerous chemicals? The answer, of course, is by reading the ingredient labels on the food and household items that you buy. But, what about products that don’t have such labels? You may assume that such products are safe. Well, you’re wrong. Read on as we tell you about some common, everyday products that can expose you to dangerous chemicals.

role of your body’s natural hormones, disrupting the entire process. This chemical is present in re-usable bottles, food cans and water pipes. Does this mean that you should throw out all your plastic bottles? Not necessarily, since, scientists haven’t managed to find the exact amount of BPA that can harm your body. However, what studies have shown is that when you expose plastic bottles to boiling water, the rate at which BPA is released is much higher than when these bottles are filled with water that is warm, or room temperature.

Plastic bottles harm more than just Mother Nature. They contain a man-made chemical known as Bisphenol A (BPA). « Know more: why babies cry at night Does you baby cry a lot at night? Well, it might be because he/ she doesn’t want another brother or sister in the family. Yamini Walia finds out more

W

hen babies cry at night, parents usually think that they are either hungry, wet, cold or lonely. However, there might be another reason? Scientists suggest that babies who want to be breastfed in the night are preventing their mother from getting pregnant again. Another baby would mean sharing everything, primarily, the love and attention they receive from their parents and grandparents. Although babies seem to be too small to think about all this, David Haig, evolutionary biologist from Harvard University says that the theory makes sense. Babies work with whatever they have, as they can’t use any other means to stop their mother from getting pregnant. Breastfeeding will leave her too tired to concentrate on having another child. Feeding a child every night, apart from causing extreme fatigue, also delays fertility in women as breastfeeding surpasses ovulation. The result implies that nursing at night is not necessary. Mothers should not worry

if they are unable to reply to their baby’s every beck and call, especially for breastfeeding at night. Obviously, babies don’t do this intentionally as their brain is not that developed. But, studies in the past hint towards the same. This kind of behaviour is also seen in babies after the birth of another child. Mostly, kids are not very welcoming to a sibling. They try to hurt or harm them, unintentionally, as everyone’s attention is diverted towards the new born. The elder sibling is suddenly expected to take care of the newborn while there is no one to take care of him/ her. However, since babies can’t speak, we will never know why they cry at night, but this theory seems to make sense. Also, being born in the present environment which is rapidly evolving, it is not difficult to assume that this might be true. Think about it and as Haig concludes in the study, decide for yourself!

A number of household products such as mattresses, TVs, computers and electrical boards use fire retardants to ensure that they don’t catch fire. However, there is a negative aspect to such products — fire retardant products contain polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which have been linked to memory and learning problems. Studies conducted on rats have shown that PBDEs, which are also found in plastics, can lower thyroid function and even affect your sperm count.

non-stick cookware Non-stick cookware is a big advantage in the kitchen. But, it can also expose you to toxic chemicals, because the teflon (that ensures the non-stickiness of your cookware) uses chemicals that come from the perfluorochemical (PFC) family. And PFCs have been found to be extremely toxic — they have been shown to interfere with the effectiveness of vaccines as well as linked to conditions such as cancer and reproductive problems.

going Hot ‘n’ Cold Want to wax yourself in order to don a gorgeous swimsuit this summer, but confused between hot and cold wax? Radhika R. tells you about the difference between the two in order to help you make the decision

dear Barbara, I have never really had any skin problems, but I recently noticed that during the summer, I get very sweaty on my T-zone. I just started working and my job involves a lot of running around, which is difficult in this heat. I can’t avoid sweating, but now the area has started to turn red. I look very funny and often get embarrassed because of this. I wash my face regularly, but is there anything that I can do to keep the redness away? — Nida Khan, Bandra dear Nida, Your T-zone is a very problematic area on the face. It tends to be oilier than any other area. You sound like you are suffering from a heat rash on your T-zone, because it is probably oilier than the rest of your face. You clearly have oily skin, so to start with, you need to drink lots of water to flush the oil out of your body. Drink twice the amount that you usually do. Splashing water on your face will help, but also try to avoid direct exposure to sun as much as possible. Keep a tissue with you at all times to instantly soak away the sweat and rub a cube of ice as soon as you are indoors. >> Hot or cold, pick a wax that causes less irritation, burns and patches

F >> Keep tissues handy as they will help deal with the excess sweat on your face dear Barbara, I am a huge fan of nail art. I change my nail art every week and use several different colours on my nails. I took to this form of art a couple of months ago. Recently, I have started noticing that even after getting regular manicures, my nails have been turning yellow and have started chipping. I am really fond of nail art and do not wish to stop it. Is there anything I can do? Please help. — deepika shinde, Charni roadi dear deepika, The yellowing or discolouration of nails is very common amongst people who constantly wear nail polish. This discolouration is often caused due to fungus on your nails. Excessive use of nail polish and using cheap quality nail polish can induce bacterial growth on your nails. There are several remedies for this. To start off try taking a break between two rounds of nail art if you don’t want to stop completely. Make sure to get that extra buffing during your manicures. There are many home remedies that will help you too, like soaking your hands in alcohol, rubbing lemons across your nails and massaging your nails with 2-3 drops of tea tree oil. Remember to keep your nails well moisturised at all times. Send your questions to: healthandfitness@afternoondc.in

or decades, waxing has been the most popular option for hair removal. Although painful, women consider it to be worthwhile to undergo just to get smooth, silky legs. The method has been the most preferred form of hair removal in India and is taking the place of shaving and epilating across the world as well. It effectively pulls your hair out from the roots and gets rid of dead skin cells. But, the various techniques can make the process confusing. Hot and cold waxing are two common types of waxing, each with their own set of advantages and disadvantages, so it’s up to you to decide what suits your skin. The wax that is used for both processes is exactly the same. The ingredients in cold as well as hot wax include a wax base (paraffin or beeswax), resin and lubricant, which can be oil or fat. Resin acts as an adhesive and helps stick to your hair, while lubricant aid in the easy removal of hair. The method of using both waxes is also the same, but there are certain differences. The major difference between both methods, as the name suggests, is the temperature at which the wax is used. Before you use hot wax on your skin, it is melted; on the other hand, cold wax is used in its thick form itself. Read on to find out more.

Cold wax Cold waxing is a quicker process, since

the wax does not need to be melted. It can be used in the form that it is available, which makes it less tedious. Cold wax is available on strips where it is already spread out, which saves more time. It is cheap and less messy as compared to hot wax. Cold wax is less painful as well, as it doesn’t adhere to your skin as strongly. On the flipside, it won’t pull out your hair completely — because of the same reason. This can lead to you using the wax repeatedly on your skin and causing irritation, painful redness and even ingrown hair. It is not considered as effective as hot waxing, since the hair does not come off easily.

Hot wax Hot wax is the most common form of waxing and uses melted wax which helps in its application. Using wax at this temperature helps it stick easily to the hair and makes pulling the hair out much more effective. This helps avoid repeated usage of the strips on your skin and keeps irritation caused by repeated pulling at bay. But, because it is so sticky, excess wax is left behind on your skin. This form of waxing is also considered to be quite messy and needs its own paraphernalia to go along with it. Since it has to be applied in its hot form, it is advisable not to use it on areas other than your hands and legs. Whatever method you use, we recommend you stop using it if it causes any skin irritation, burns and infections.

Hot or Cold Two people in the city pick their favourite method of waxing and tell us why they prefer one over the other:

Cold wax

26-year-old Ekta Valecha, prefers using cold wax. She tells us, “I have very sensitive skin. I used to remove the hair on my arms and legs by shaving, but then switched to waxing. Hot wax made my skin even more irritated. I started getting horrible red bumps all over my legs and arms, which really scared me.” Disappointed with all the hair removal methods, she gave cold waxing a try. She further adds, “I prefer cold waxing to any other method. It is perfect for my skin. It might not be as effective, but it’s better than putting your skin through too much trouble.”

Hot wax

24-year-old Sneha Bendre, tells us, “I cannot imagine opting for any hair removal method other than hot waxing. It makes my skin smooth and helps me get rid of dead cells.” Unable to understand the concept of cold waxing, she says, “The whole idea of waxing is to pull the hair out from the roots and isn’t this easily done when your pores are open with the help of the heat? I have never tried cold wax and I don’t want to change my hair removal method because I am very happy with it.”

Facing action in more states, ban in HP, Ramdev to move court NATION

HIMLA/ NAGPUR: Troubles seem to be mounting for Baba Ramdev for his remarks on Dalits and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with the yoga guru being booked in Maharashtra and Rajasthan and a court case filed against him in Bihar. After action by Uttar Pradesh authorities, Ramdev was on Monday banned from conducting programmes in Himachal and booked under SC/ST Act for his 'honeymoon' remarks targeting Rahul Gandhi, but he said he would move court against the curbs, reports PTI. Terming the ban on his yoga camps as undemocratic, Ramdev alleged the government had pressurised the Election Commission to put the curbs and accused Congress of 'distorting' his remarks against Rahul, that have been slammed as 'anti- Dalit', for vote-bank politics. Chief Electoral Officer Narinder Chauhan said Ramdev has been refused permission to hold yoga camps in Himachal on the directions of Election Commission, which has instructed the states to

non-political outfits to help certain candidates and had issued instruction to all the CEOs on April 18. The permission to hold camp in Kangra, which was scheduled for Monday, was withdrawn by the local Subdivisional Magistrate. Ramdev, who reached Kangra on Monday, alleged that the government was stopping his yoga shivirs, "which are non-political, in an undemocratic manner". "The government has pressurised the EC to put curbs on Yoga shivirs upto May 16 but we would move the court and challenged the orders of the Commission. "We got relief in such cases from Gujarat and Karnataka governensure that no political activity be ments and hope to get similar relief allowed through yoga shivirs. in Himachal also," he said. Police said offences have registered against Ramdev by Panchpaoli police in Nagpur after a number of Dalit organisations including MPCC Schedule Caste cell and city Corporator Sandeep Sahare along with Bhimsena, NCP, Youth Congress, AAP and Triratna Bodi Foundation lodged protest. An MPCC delegation met ACP Baba Dongre on Sunday to hand over a memorandum demanding that Ramdev be booked under the Act following which offences were registered, police said. Also, an NCP delegation led by Ajay Patil had lodged a complaint. Protesters blackened Ramdev's poster outside his local clinic Patanjali. Activists threw slippers at a poster and burnt it last evening, police added. After massive outrage, Ramdev had expressed regret. He reiterated that his remarks against Rahul Gandhi were 'distorted and misinterpreted'. "I have already apologised but Congress is raking up the issue as it is using the Dalits as vote bank," he said.

Clinching evidence to arrest Modi, Shah: Sibal A

HMEDABAD: Union Minister Kapil Sibal on Monday raked up alleged fake encounter of Ishrat Jahan to hit out at Narendra Modi saying the BJP's PM nominee and Amit Shah were being 'shielded' despite existence of 'clinching' evidence to arrest them. "I want to ask who is shielding Modi and Shah when, as per lawyers like us, there is a clinching evidence to arrest them in the case of fake encounter of Ishrat Jahan and three others," Sibal told PTI. The hard-hitting attack by Sibal came on the last day of campaign-

ing for the single-phase polls in Gujarat to be held on April 30. Joining Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi and other leaders in attacking Modi's development model, Sibal said, "many models are being talked about in the country now, but this is an encounter model of Gujarat". Elaborating about 'clinching evidence' Sibal said, "There are call records of talk between accused police officer DG Vanzara and the then minister of state for Home Amit Shah at the time of encounter and

before the encounter that took place on June 15, 2004. "There are statements of police officers under CrPC 164 pointing fingers at them," the minister said. Quoting from resignation letter of Vanzara, Sibal said, "Vanzara has said that 'being field officers, they have simply implemented the conscious policy of this government. "Clearly, all this could not have happened without Modi's knowledge," he alleged. "All the pieces have now fallen into place. The highest authority in the state, from the evidence as disPics: PTI

Responding to a query that whether the CBI which works under the Central government is protecting Modi and Shah from arrest, Sibal said, "CBI is not working under the Central government". CBI, investigating the alleged fake encounter of Ishrat Jahan and three others, has not included any political leaders in chargesheets filed by it but has charged police and IB officers for murder and criminal conspiracy among other things. When asked if any top Congress leader in Central government is 'soft' on Modi and Shah and is instrumental in keeping them out of the CBI charge sheet, Sibal replied in the negative. On the snooping controversy, Sibal said his government will appoint a judge to probe the incident before May 16.

MSIL reported a below-expected Q4 PAT of Rs 8bn (RCMLe: Rs 9.2bn) as margins disappointed at 10.3% (RCMLe: 12.3%) on non-recurring dealer compensation post the excise cut and additional employee provisions. While FY14 volumes remained muted, we foresee a recovery in FY15/FY16 with expected macro stability and contribution from new launches. We slightly upgrade our FY15/FY16 estimates by 3% on higher margins, and accordingly raise our Mar’15 TP to Rs 2,160 (from Rs 2,080). Maintain BUY. Non-recurring dealer payments hit Q4 margins: MSIL’s Q4 margins came in at 10.3% vs. 12.3% estimated due to (1) dealer compensation of Rs 1.4bn post the excise cut; (2) higher RM/sales on higher commodity prices and an adverse exchange rate; (3) provisions of ~Rs 930mn related to employee benefits. Excl. the impact of non-recurring dealer payments, margins would have been 11.5%. Lower margins, partially offset by higher other income (Rs 4bn vs. RCMLe Rs 3.1bn), led to a lower-than-expected PAT of Rs 8bn (RCMLe: Rs 9.2bn), not comparable YoY. Rural portfolio strong amid an otherwise weak macro: MSIL’s FY14 rural sales grew 16% YoY (vs. 7-8% drop for urban market), driving the overall rural sales mix to 32% as the company has managed to grow its presence in 93k vs. 47k villages in FY13. MSIL’s aggressive plans to build the rural vertical would continue to yield dividends over the long term. During FY14, the eastern region grew at the sharpest pace, followed by the north, south and west. Overall, inventory days stand at ~4 weeks. Reiterate BUY: MSIL is trading at 16x/12.7x FY15E/FY16E (long-term avg. of 15x), partially reflecting the muted volume growth for FY14. Driven by new launches and macro stability post the general elections, we build in a sharp volume recovery of +10%/+15% for FY15/FY16 (FY14:-1%). Further, with focus on localisation/cost reduction, we expect margins to have a cushion at 12%+ levels. Maintain BUY with a revised Mar’15 TP of Rs 2,160 (vs. Rs 2,080 earlier) based on 14x FY16 EPS.

India Infoline calls a ‘Buy’ on Yes Bank CMP: Rs. 463

Target Rs. 522

Loan growth picks-up; deposits franchise continue to strengthen: Yes Bank’s customer assets (loans + credit substitutes) growth was along expected lines at 15% yoy. While there was a modest increase in the credit substitutes portfolio during the quarter, loan growth picked-up to 18% yoy from 14.7% yoy in the previous quarter. Bank continued to add granularity in its deposits with the share of wholesale deposits (above Rs250mn) falling significantly from 32% in the previous quarter to 26% in Q4 FY14. Savings balances grew by impressive 55% yoy driven by substantial network expansion and higher savings rate offered (weighted average cost at ~7%). The CASA ratio improved by 110bps qoq and 310bps yoy to 22%. With traction in current deposits continuing to be sluggish, savings deposits share within CASA has increased to 57%. Retail/Branch Banking FDs also continue to grow strongly at 33% yoy. Core fee growth remained strong ex-financial advisory; opex growth moderated sharply: Core fee growth (ex-treasury) improved to 27% yoy aided by sustained robust traction in Transaction Banking (44% yoy) and Branch Banking (66% yoy) fees. Growth remained modest in Financial Advisory fees at 6% yoy; third straight quarter of low single-digit growth. Bank reined-in opex growth at 26% yoy as compared to 31% yoy in Q3 FY14, through its sustainability is doubtful as network expansion continued at robust pace. Bank added 130 new branches during FY14 as compared to 74 in FY13. We expect opex growth to remain firm in FY15 and thus driving a slight uptick in cost/income ratio. Asset quality improvement was a key positive; would pacify street’s credit cost assumptions: As against our expectation of some deterioration, Yes Bank’s asset quality improved qoq as manifested in the decline of Gross NPLs both in absolute value (11% qoq) and as a ratio of advances (8bps qoq). This was driven by low slippages (~Rs450m, annualized 0.4%) and ~Rs200mn NPL sale to ARCs. A strong operational performance enabled the bank to raise provisioning coverage materially from 78% to 85% thus driving a substantial fall in Net NPLs (reduced to 0.05% of advances and 0.4% of Networth). Added positive was the absence of any new restructuring during the quarter and so the outstanding stock remained at marginal 0.18% of advances. On the back impressive resilience displayed by Yes Bank’s asset portfolio and expected gradual improvement in macro, we have moderated our delinquencies and credit cost assumptions for FY15/16. Retain BUY and raise 9-12 month target price to Rs522: On the back of NIM expansion and moderation in credit cost, we estimate Yes Bank to deliver 23% earnings CAGR over FY14-16 notwithstanding slowdown in core fee growth and sustained investments in network expansion. Yes Bank is expected to deliver impressive RoAs at 1.6-1.7% and RoEs at 20-21% over the coming three years which should underpin sustained valuation re-rating of the stock. Retain BUY rating and raise 9-12 month target to Rs 522.

Boosting productive spend, challenge for next government, says CRISIL By A Business Reporter

T

he Thirteenth Finance Commission had laid a systematic fiscal consolidation road map for India that was aimed at reducing deficits but gradually raising capital spending in the economy. But, currently, capital expenditure levels are dismally low. Increasing capital spending from these low levels – far short of what was prescribed – is critical to pump India’s growth. The government can limit fiscal deficit within the target either by raising revenues or by cutting spending. “While large part of the current expenditure is sticky – salaries, pensions, and interest payments – cutting unproductive spending on subsidies, mainly on fuels such as kerosene and liquefied petroleum gas, will be necessary.

Wal-Mart ‘Paid And Forgave’ Spent $334 mn in severing ties with Bharti Enterprises By A Business Reporter

U

BUSINESS

S retail giant Wal-Mart, which ended 6-year-old joint venture with Bharti Enterprises last year, spent USD 334 million to break ties with the Indian firm. The Bentonville-based firm said it "paid and forgave" debt of approximately USD 234 million in connection with the agreements related to the Bharti retail business. Another USD 100 million was spent in buying out the Indian partner's stake from the erstwhile 50:50 cash-and-carry joint venture -- Bharti Walmart Pvt Ltd. "During fiscal 2014, the company acquired, for USD 100 million, the remaining ownership interest in Bharti Walmart Pvt Ltd," the company said in its annual report. In October 2013, Wal-Mart called off its six-year-old partnership with Bharti Enterprises and decided to operate wholesale stores independently in India. Against the backdrop of these payouts, Wal-Mart recorded a net loss of approximately USD 151 million. Earlier this month, Wal-Mart had announced to focus on the wholesale business with plans to open 50 stores in the next four to five years to expand its footprint in the country. The company's announcement came a day after the BJP, most widely considered a favourite to come to power after the ongoing general elections, said it was opposed to FDI in multi-brand retail.

This will have to be supplemented through implementation of tax reforms such as GST, which will improve the government’s revenue position and fund higher capital spending. Therein lies the challenge for the next government, says Crisil Research in an opinion piece on the subject. The 13th Finance Commission, which is now in its terminal year, had set the Central government a capital expenditure to GDP target of 4.5% to be achieved by fiscal 2015. What has actually been achieved is less than half of the target. The ratio for fiscal 2014 was 1.7% and the same is budgeted for fiscal 2015. Even if revenue grants provided by the Central government for capital creation to the state are added to the Centre’s capital expenditure, the Central government’s total bud-

geted spending for productive purposes will only be 2.8% in fiscal 2015. Over fiscals 2013 and 2014, in terms of per person spending, the government only spent an incremental Rs 110 on productive spending (capital expenditure and the revenue grants for capital creation), while it spent an additional Rs 1,900+ per person on other expenditure. The new government that will take charge next month must aim to raise the Centre’s productive spending and close the gap between the 13th Finance Commission target on capital expenditure and the actual productive spending. To fund this higher capital spending, the government will have to improve its revenue position by implementing tax reforms such as GST.

Investors Deserting Mutual Funds? By A Business Reporter

F

ive years in a row of declines in investor folios indicates that mutual funds are gradually losing their once, much coveted charm. The Mutual Funds industry has lost about 33 lakh investors, measured in terms of individual accounts or folios, in the last financial year, 2013-14, primarily on account of volatility in equity market. This was the fifth consecutive year of loss of folios by mutual funds (MF). Folios are numbers designated to individual investor accounts, although one investor can have multiple folios. According to market regulator SEBI's data, on total investor accounts with 44 fund houses, the number of folios fell to around 3.95 crore at the end of 2013-14, from 4.28 crore in the last fiscal (2012-13) - a decline of 33 lakh new investor accounts. In the past five financial years till 2013-14, the MF industry had lost more than 88 lakh investor accounts. The MF sector, which held 4.75 crore folios at the end of financial year 2008-09, saw an increase of 3.66 lakh new investors account to 4.8 crore in 2009-10. However, later the number of folios continued to witness a southward trend and tumbled to 3.95 crore during the past financial year. Giving the reason for such massive fall in retail folios, Axis AMC National Sales Head Karan Datta said that volatility in equity market had prompted investors to exit, reports PTI. "The sharp decline in retail folios was mainly in the equity category which was impacted by volatility," Datta said. During 2013-14, the number of investor folios for equity schemes fell by 40 lakh. The total number of folios in equity funds were 2.92 crore by the end of 2013-14, as against 3.31 crore by the preceding fiscal.

In the past five financial years, the MF industry has lost more than 88 lakh investor accounts According to the SEBI data, the total number of folios in debt funds rose by about 7.28 lakh to 68.67 lakh at the end of March 2013. Balanced schemes, which invest in equity and debt category, gained 10,824 folios to end at 26.13 lakh during the last financial year. However, exchange traded funds saw a drop of 34,773 folios to 7.04 lakh investor accounts at the end of March this year. At the end of February, the sector offered a total of 1,538 schemes to investors, of which 353 were equity schemes and 1,089 were debtlinked schemes.

BUSINESS BRIEFS CBM Producers Can’t Charge More Than Natural Gas

The government had approved a price of USD 6.79 for CBM gas produced by Great Eastern Energy Corp Ltd (GEECL) from its Raniganj-South block in West Bengal while a rate of USD 6.25 was fixed for incidental gas sales from Essar Oil's (EOL) Raniganj-East block. Wamanrao was a singer and a stage actor too. He has acted as a hero in plays which starred the legendary Balgandharva. The foundation holds an annual programme every year in which talented and established singers perform. This year the honour went to Hrishikesh Gangurde, the young singer now based in Lucknow. Gangurde is a pupil of the well-known singer Ulhas Kashalkar. He was a scholar at the prestigious Sangeet Research Academy sponsored by the ITC. He has also learned semi classical music from

Gangurde honoured

the veteran singer Girija Devi at the SRA. At this concert, he sang the raga 'Multani' in a style which is popularised by Kashalkar. Gangurde has a thin voice but his command of the sur is near perfect and he sings with a lot of involvement. His chaiti was in the mold of the Girija Devi

You will get ample opportunity to show your enthusiasm and willingness to take up work at short notice. It may however mean spending more time at work, which family or beloved may not relish and may even resent. A minor argument with your mate or beloved could upset both. It is quite possible that you are being unreasonable and difficult.

CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): Face up to the problem and work towards better understanding and accepting each other’s shortcomings rather than carp about each other. A willingness to change your perceptions rather than state of affairs will go a long way to help you achieve what you want. Togetherness with your mate or beloved is lackluster. It seems both of you are preoccupied with your individual problems.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): This is the time to make a move towards fulfilling your aspirations. You have everything going for you and ample opportunities. Do not get influenced by others, for you are on the right track. You tend to think a lot before you take a step. Study new projects carefully but then go ahead .This is a period of good times and exciting romance. Do not let others interfere in your love life. Some of you will plan a brief holiday.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20): Avoid arguments with colleagues. Remain calm and focused against all odds. Worries are part of life. Find time to be with friends who inspire you positively. Differences with your mate over minor issues are likely but with foresight you can avoid touchy subjects which invite strong feelings. You cannot wish away mistakes you have made. Show remorse and no attitude.

Punjab's Sandeep Sharma celebrates the prize wicket of Chris Gayle.

UBAI: Table-toppers Kings XI Punjab's bowlers produced a disciplined performance to restrict Royal Challengers Bangalore to 124 for eight in their Indian Premier League match here today. Sandeep Sharma led with impressive figures of 3/15 while Rishi Dahwan (2/14) and Mitchell Johnson (2/19 ) chipped in with two wickets apiece. There was a wicket for Laxmypathi Balaji also. Having missed the team's first four games with a hamstring injury, Chris Gayle attacked from the word, picking 20 runs in the first over of the match. But that's all he could make as the left-handed batsman fell in the next over. Yuvraj Singh (35) top-scored for RCB with the help of three fours and a six while facing 32 balls. Earlier, RCB had a rollicking first over with the returning Gayle picking Glenn Maxwell for special treatment. The first two boundaries were not convincing but the sixes over long-on and long-off had Gayle written all over them. RCB's joy was short-lived though as Sandeep Sharma cut short the towering Jamaican's stay after he missed the line to be bowled off a deliv-

ery that swung away from the left-hander. More blows awaited RCB as they lost their skipper Virat Kohli cheaply, Sharma being the bowler again. The 20-year-old medium pacer from Patiala then accounted for Parthiv Patel, before Rishi Dhawan joined in the party, removing the dangerous A B de Villiers and Yuvraj Singh in quick succession. Pace spearhead Johnson and Balaji then struck to make matters worse for RCB. Kohli's was a debatable decision as the ball seemed to be going down the legside. The batsman looked frustrated as he made his way back to the dressing room. Takawale poked at a length ball and got a thick edge that was duly taken by wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. While going for big drive on the up, Patel edged one to the keeper, leaving RCB precariously placed at 26 for four. RCB put up a brief resistance before de Villiers found Maxwell at backward point. The South African put on 41 runs for the fifth wicket with Yuvraj, who was dismissed by Dhawan even before the batting team could cross 100. Albie Morkel (15) and Varun Aaron (11) took the score past 120.

KP’s calmness has rubbed off on DD players: Parnell S

HARJAH: Delhi Daredevils pacer Wayne Parnell is all praise for his skipper Kevin Pietersen, saying that the Englishman's calmness has rubbed off on his team-mates in their IPL campaign so far."Pietersen brings his own energy to the team and his calmness rubs off on the other players. If you have a calm captain, you have a calm team as well," Parnell said after his side's six-wicket win over Mumbai Indians."Having confidence helps you and having the backing of the support staff and the captain is massive for any cricketer. Everyone wants to be backed by the leaders, and I feel I have that backing," he said. Parnell (1/17) played a big role in Delhi restricting Mumbai to a modest 125 for 6 in their IPL match yesterday, a total which they

KKR looking for turnaround against Rajasthan tomorrow A

BU DHABI: Hit hard by the woeful form of its captain Gautam Gambhir, Kolkata Knight Riders would look for a turnaround in their fortunes when they take on Rajasthan Royals in an Indian Premier League match here tomorrow. Kolkata is struggling in their batting department with Gambhir having been dismissed for a duck thrice in the four matches he has led the team so far. He scored just one in Kolkata's last match against leaders Kings XI Punjab, which his side lost by 23 runs. The 2012 edition champions have one of the strongest batting line-ups among the eight IPL teams but none of their batsmen, except Jacques Kallis and Manish Pandey, have been consistent so far. Their batting problem was compounded by the disappointing form of big hitter Yusuf Pathan, who has scored just 17 in the four outings till now. After a bright start in the tournament with a

victory over defending champions Mumbai Indians, Kolkata have been finding it difficult to click as a team. Had it not been the stunning catch by Chris Lynn to dismiss A B de Villiers, Kolkata would have lost their match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 24 in Sharjah. Kolkata though still have time to come back with a bang as it is early days in the tournament and despite their inconsistent form, they are still in the third place in the league table with two wins from four matches. With the likes of mystery spinner Sunil Narine, highest wicket-taker so far this season with nine scalps to his credit, in fine touch and the bowling department comparatively doing well, Kolkata would be hoping to end the UAE leg of their campaign on a winning note tomorrow. Just like Kolkata, Rajasthan also began their campaign with a victory but suffered two consecutive losses before winning their last match against Bangalore. They also have

same points with Kolkata on four. Just like Kolkata, the Jaipur-based side have also been facing problems at the top with openers Abhishek Nayar and Ajinkya Rahane failing to give a strong start in the four matches they have played so far. The win against Bangalore in their last match must have boosted the confidence of Rajasthan, more so with their captain ShaneWatson's return to batting form and picking up a wicket in that match. Rajasthan's bowling department, which does not have any big name, has been doing a fine job. Except against the rampaging Kings XI Punjab, the Rajasthan bowlers have restricted their opponents to modest totals and it will be interesting to see when they come up against the likes of Kallis and Gambhir tomorrow. Pacer Rajat Bhatia and off-spinner Kane Richardson have been consistent while leg-spinner Pravin Tambe scalped four in Rajasthan's thrashing of Bangalore in their last match.

Smith is powerful and intelligent cricketer: McCullum S

HARJAH: Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith have given Chennai Super Kings a flying start in IPL 7 with their explosive partnership at the top of batting order and the New Zealander described his opening partner a "powerful" and "intelligent" cricketer. "There is still a long way to go in the tournament, but I have certainly enjoyed my partnership with Dwayne Smith, 'The Doctor'. It is great to bat with him because he is so powerful and has a lot of options in his batting," McCullum said. "He is a very intelligent cricketer as well. We seem to have a good rapport and get a good partnership going. It is nice to be able to contribute, and personally too I am enjoying my time with CSK so far." Smith scored three fifties in five matches and McCullum hit two half-centuries to currently lie at the second and third position in the

areas. I saw a comment from our captain, MS Dhoni, earlier in the week when he said that Smith and I don't compete against each other but we complement each other, which is nice to have in an opening partnership."We also have so much power to follow that we both have the confidence to play positively," he was quoted as saying by the official website of IPL. In the past editions, it was the opening pair of Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay, which served Chennai well and McCullum feels it will be tough to replace them."Michael Hussey did outstandingly well for the Chennai all these years and those are tough shoes to fill for the two of us at the most runs list respectively. Asked if we have been playing, we have moment. Hussey has served this they form the most explosive pair, managed to give our team a good franchise incredibly well and now McCullum said: "So far we have start in most games. we have this opportunity to do the done well. We may not be the most "We are pretty lucky that both of same. We have started well and explosive pair, but in terms of how us hit the ball and hit it in different there is still long way to go."

overhauled in 18.5 overs. The leftarm pacer, however, insisted that it's all about teamwork."I was actually speaking to one of the owners the other day. He mentioned to me that the Delhi Daredevils play for the badge and not for themselves. As a collective bowling unit, we share information. The constant sharing of information between us helps us perform well as a unit," he said. With three losses and two wins, Delhi are at the lower half of the IPL table but Parnell said that the team morale was still high after the win over Mumbai."It is nice to get some momentum going in to India. I feel we have been playing really good cricket over the past few games. Most of our losses in the tournament have been close, barring the game against Chennai Super Kings where we were outplayed," he was quoted as saying by IPL official website. Parnell, 24, has been in and out of the Proteas side since his debut in January 2009, but the lanky bowler insists that he has matured with time. "Over the last 12 to 16 months, after being out of the national team, I went back to domestic cricket and put up some decent performances to get back into the South African side. I have also learnt to wait for my chances and do well for the team when I do get a chance."You have the likes of Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn in the pace attack for South Africa, and for me as a young guy, I have to hang in there and perform well when I am required," Parnell said.

SPORTS

N

EW DELHI: Encouraged by the presence of many “team players”, Kolkata Knight Riders bowling coach Wasim Akram has expressed confidence that his side will make it to the final four in the IPL as they have a “good enough” bowling attack.”We just went for the players we thought are team players and obviously individual match winners, Yusuf is there, Shakib-al-Hasan, Robin Uthappa, Andre Russell. All these guys are team people and a team sport needs players who support each other when things are bad,” Akram told PTI in an interview. “There will be a rough time. You’ll lose couple of games on the trot, which will happen, it’s a long tournament. But, it was decision made by the management, we want boys who could actually be good team players apart from being individual match winners,” the former Pakistani skipper said on whether KKR had consciously stayed away from star players this time. Asked whether he sees KKR in the final four in this year’s edition of the Indian Premier League, he

said, “I would love to. Yes I can see KKR. I would like to see KKR in the finals. We have good enough team, we have good enough bowling, fielding has been consistent. So, yes, there is always a chance.” Akram, who was part of the KKR dug-out during three IPL editions from 2010 to 2012, said his job was to talk to the bowlers, talk to the captain about strategy and give

Morne Morkel, Pat Cummins as overseas players and also Veer Pratap, Vinay Kumar and Umesh Yadav,” he said. Akram heaped praise on Indian paceman Yadav, saying, “I think Umesh Yadav is phenomenal, he’s got pace and still can’t understand why he’s not playing for India. It still baffles me.” Akram opined that spinners are more handy in the T20 format as the batsmen has to take risks to go after a tweaker. The IPL’s first leg is being played in the UAE and Akram said the tournament was “definitely different” with different grounds and different crowds. However, he said the buzz was still the same with packed stadiums and everybody enjoying the game throughly. confidence to all the batsmen. Commenting on India’s bowling “With my experience in cricket, I attack for the 2015 World Cup, have played like 21 years interna- Akram said, “Its another year to go, tionally. UMBAI: Lithsome swimmers Aditi Dhumatkar and Monique Gandhi, both pride of Khar Gymkhana, Mumbai and Maharashtra, brought glory to the country by winning three silver and one bronze medal between them in the Dubai International FINA swimming meet on Sunday. Aditi finished the 100m freestyle in 58.78 secs which fetched her the silver medal. Her timing of 27.10 secs in the 50m free style was the year’s fastest by an Indian women swimmer. Monique emerged second best in the 400m and got a bronze in the 800m freestyle event saw her qualifying for the Youth Olympics 2014. Incidentally, junior Monique’s timing was also a national record in her age group.

Both Customs and ONGC worked hard to gain the upper hand but their attacks lacked direction and as a result

they were not able to create too many goal scoring opportunities at either end. On the few occasions when ONGC managed to break through they were thwarted by Customs defenders and goalkeeper Lihaz Koya who made a couple of timely saves, especially in the final minutes of the game. His best effort was in the 80th minute when he denied ONGC what looked to be a certain goal. Koya did well to lunge back and tip over the crossbar V. Lalchuan-

ILLARREAL (Spain): Barcelona defender Dani Alves responded to a racist taunt when a banana landed at his feet during a game at Villarreal by picking up the fruit, peeling and then eating it before proceeding to take a corner kick. Alves said after the match that humor is the best way to combat racism in sports. "We have suffered this in Spain for some time," Alves said. "You have to take it with a dose of humor. We aren't going to change things easily. If you don't give it importance, they don't achieve their objective." Alves has often been subjected to racist taunts and called fighting racism "a lost war" in January 2013, after segments of Real Madrid's fans abused him with monkey chants during a match. Alves had already played a key part in sparking his team's 3-2 comeback when his offtarget shot was turned into an own goal by Gabriel Armando in the 65th. And shortly after the banana incident, Alves set up a cross that Mateo Musacchio headed into his own goal in the 78th before Lionel Messi scored Barcelona's winner.

UNICH: Bayern Munich plan on making home advantage count in today’s Champions League semifinal, second-leg, against Real Madrid having never lost at home to the Spanish giants. Madrid arrive in the Bavarian capital holding a 1-0 lead thanks to Karim Benzema’s 19thminute goal in last Wednesday’s first leg in Madrid and are looking to avenge their defeat at the same stage to Bayern two years ago. History is on the Germans’ side. Bayern have never lost to Real in Munich, with eight victories and one draw, to lead the overall series with 11 victories to Madrid’s eight from 21 encounters. The second-leg is finely poised. Real maintained their positive momentum since beating Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final before their first-leg victory over Bayern by romping to a 4-0 win over Osasuna in the Spanish league on Saturday. Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo

proved he is fit for the Munich clash after a hamstring injury by scoring twice to leave him on 47 goals for the season. Real coach Carlo Ancelotti rested stars Benzema, who picked up a knee knock in the first leg, and Gareth Bale, who was recovering from flu, at Osasuna. The Italian has insisted both men should be fit to start at the Allianz Arena.”I am sure that whatever eleven I play will be full of desire and excited to play such a big game,” said Ancelotti. “Everyone should be calm because we are going to prepare properly.”The objective is to score, not to defend, and that is the manner in which we will continue to work.” Ancelotti has never lost to a German team in six encounters from his time as AC Milan manager, but the key to Tuesday’s game will be who scores first.Real will be chasing the first goal in Munich which would leave Bayern needing to score at least three times to progress to their fourth Champions League

final in five years. Worryingly for coach Pep Guardiola, Bayern have conceded the first goal in seven of their last nine matches since winning the Bundesliga title with a record seven matches to spare last month. A woeful first-half in Saturday’s dress rehearsal saw the hosts 2-1 down to Werder Bremen in Munich before Bayern roared back with four secondhalf goals to claim a comfortable Bundesliga win. But the flattering scoreline failed to mask Bayern’s dreadful defending in the first 45 minutes, which Guardiola admitted gave him cause for concern. “That is the first time that I have been a bit disappointed and sad about the first half the fans didn’t deserve that,” said Guardiola. “We were better in the second half, that’s good for the mood ahead of the Madrid match, but it will be a completely different game.”I trust my team and I hope that we can all manage it together.”

IVERPOOL: Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has been voted Player of the Year by his fellow professionals in English football, capping a season in which his scoring prowess helped erase memories of previous bans for racism and biting. The 27year-old Uruguay international became the first South American to collect the Professional Footballers’ Association accolade yesterday, having led Liverpool’s unexpected Premier League title challenge with 30 goals. “The Premier League is full of really great players and so it is a great honor when these players recognize your work on the pitch,” Suarez said. “I always try my best for the team and it is nice to get awards but really this is for my teammates and the staff at Liverpool because without their help I wouldn’t have this prize.” But it was a bittersweet day for Suarez, who flew to London from Liverpool after failing to score as the leaders’ title charge was halted by a 2-0 loss to Chelsea. Suarez missed the first five league matches of the season while completing his 10match ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic. He was previously suspended for eight games for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

plays with a pimpled rubber, gave India the lead by foxing Cecilia Akpan 11-3 11-6 11-5. Shamini, returning to action for the reverse singles, got the job done by taming Madhurika's conqueror Edem 11-8 11-8 12-10. The women next play Portugal tomorrow and men face Australia.

Lahiri reaches career-high world ranking at 67 N

EW DELHI: Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri's incredible victory at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters catapulted him from 102 to a career-high of 67 in the Official World Golf Rankings today. Lahiri, who is now also the Asian Tour no. 1, had achieved his previous best ranking of 99, in March this year. The highest ranked Indian in the world at the moment, Lahiri has also become the second-highest ranked Asian player after Thongchai Jaidee who is at 49. Besides Jeev Milkha Singh, no other Indian golfer has been ranked higher than 67. Jeev had achieved his careerbest ranking of 29 back in 2009. Among the other two Indians who had previously broken into the top-100, Jyoti

Randhawa went as high as 70 while Gaganjeet Bhullar reached a career-high of 85. At present, Shiv Kapur at 154 is next best ranked Indian in the world followed by Gaganjeet Bhullar at 173. Lahiri's fourth win on Asian Tour and the first outside India, brings him closer to his personal goal of top-50 in

World Rankings, which would then get him a berth in Majors. Currently, if he manages to get inside top-60 or ties on May 26 or June 9, 2014, Lahiri will get a berth into the US Open at the Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina. Lahiri could also get a lastminute berth into the British Open, if he manages to squeeze inside top-50 by May 21, 2014, which means he has the Championship in Singapore, which is co-sanctioned with Europe, and the Philippines Open over the next four weeks. Further the PGA Championships, the fourth and last Major each year, usually invites all top-100 players, not otherwise qualified, on the World Ranking list. For that he needs to stay in the top-100 till the week before the PGA, which will be held from August 4.

Bangladesh coach Jurgensen puts in his papers

DHAKA: Bangaldesh cricket team’s Australian coach Shane Jurgensen today tendered his resignation in the wake of the national team’s disastroust performance in the ICC World T20 where they even lost to minnows Hong Kong. Jurgensen took up the Bangladesh job permanently in February 2013 after being the interim coach for a series, against West Indies, in 2012. The former Queensland star was given a twoyear contract until the 2015 World Cup but Bangladesh’s recent results had created uncertainty over his future. Bangladesh were outplayed by Sri Lanka in the first Test in January this year, before bouncing back with a drawn game in Chittagong. They lost the T20 and ODI series, albeit through narrow defeats. The Asia Cup brought four defeats, including one to Afghanistan, while their World T20 campaign crashed when they were shocked by Hong Kong in the first round. It is reported that the BCB is already in the hunt for a new coach ahead of the three-match one-day series against India slated for mid June.
