he Higher Secondary Certificate’s (HSC) process for online registrations process may have just begun, but has already suffered its first glitch, with its website being jammed. After the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) started its online registrations yesterday, teachers and school authorities experienced difficulties in completing the registration process because of the servers being down or the web-portal being jammed. Unable to fill up the forms and register students for the HSC exams scheduled in February 2014, students, parents and teachers are worried. A few months ago, the MSBSHSE had announced that the registration process for the HSC exams

would be carried out online. This process was initiated to reduce the use of paper used for the documentation of the students, schools and centers. Yesterday morning, the MSHSBSE started the first round of the registration process. However, teachers across the city soon experienced difficulties in filling up the registration forms online. Uday Nare, a senior teacher from Hansraj Morarji Public School, says, “Many students faced trouble while filling up their forms as they were not aware about the mandatory options to be filled, particularly in the case of students from reserved categories. Students from the ST, SC and OBC categories have to be very careful while filling their forms as a mistake cannot be changed. Even teachers faced trouble due to the website being jammed and the server being

down.” The board has provided schools with a CD containing the software for the registration so that the process can continue. Earlier, about 50 IT teachers from junior colleges across Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad trained in the online registration process. When the ADC spoke to Laxmikant Pandey, Chairman, MSBSHSE, Mumbai Division, he said, “As the registrations have started today, lakhs of students and several schools registering for the HSC exams simultaneously might have reduced the speed of the web-portal slower. Students, teachers and parents should not worry, as online registrations will be fine. Schools are instructed to fill up the online registration forms by December 6 without being fined after which students can fill up the form up to December 12 with a fine.

Thousands of people have travelled to witness the miracle which rationalist dismiss as mere imagination. However; the faithful insist is a miracle. Moses Rodrigues, resident of Nanbhat, tried to convince this reporter through a photo taken on his cell phone, while Harrold Almedia of Manickpur insisted that the image was genuine. This reporter could not make out much through the cell phone image and tried to get a qualified opinion by phoning Bishop House. The matter was laid to rest, when the person who answered said, “Have we declared it as a miracle? No! In fact we aren’t even aware of this incident.”

renaissance in regional cinema: Bengali and Punjabi films, and the impact they’re having on the industry. Meanwhile, on Fast Track Datar will be roaming across India for a special edition of the travel news show. He will be in Mumbai to report on its “growing nightlife”; he will look at how technology is changing tourism, and visiting the city’s first theme park Adlabs Imagica. Then he will go to the Kochrab Ashram in Ahmedabad “where you can live like Gandhi for a week.” Plus Goa and Karnataka and finally, some stuff on how safe India really is for female travelers. We can give him the final word on that last bit – not at all. But then, what do we know!

So many lives ruined

SOARING SKY HIGH... Talking about extremes of the Indian experience, the BBC might do worse than explore this facet of urban development in the urbs prima in India – a plane flying dangerously low over the zopadpattis and multi-storeyed shanties in Ghatkopar’s Asalpha village, close to where the swanky new Metro is expected to terminate. Our photographer says some of the shanties seem almost as high as the Air Control Tower!

Focus on India FEBRUARY onwards BBC World promises to be great in terms of programming, with the Beeb about to embark upon an India Direct series due to start shooting from mid December. In fact, CEO of BBC Global News Ltd, Jim Egan is currently on a visit to India in connection with this, to be followed in a little while by Rajan Datar, a senior journalist, who will be anchoring the series. The point of

the programming is to look at India as we go towards the elections of 2014, “going beyond the tales of a growing middle class and extreme poverty to bring audiences insight on this growing economic and global player.” Here’s what we can look out for: Working Lives, to be shot out of Ahmedabad, meets people from across the economic spectrum with very different jobs and social positions. From a space scientist to a “litter picker”, from a manufacturing magnate to a toiler in one of the city’s textile plants, a

glimpse of life “at the extremes of the Indian experience.” One Square Mile, based on Pune FC, meets football players in the Premier League, their Dutch manager and goes to a premier league match. Then there is the football team made up of dalits, “who can only aspire to the big time”. Talking Movies, described as an India Special, is not going to look at Bollywood but at its “antidote” – “the new wave of Indian cinema that has an independent sensibility, as well as the

WE wonder if it has ever occurred to anyone in the CBI “investigating” the Aarushi murder case and now quite frankly, following the verdict and the sentence of life imprisonment to Rajesh and Nupur Talwar in the murder of their daughter, actually crowing about their “success”, that their shoddy work has exacted a terrible toll on two possibly innocent people. And this toll is being felt by the

inconsolable in prison, unable to eat dinner. Tuesday they were sentenced to life imprisonment. Prosecutors had sought the death penalty. “We are frightened. Nupur’s mother and mine are sisters. Nupur resembles my mother. I resemble hers. My aunt, Lata Chitnis, and I share a special bond, we share confidences quite easily. Last week, I was unable to bridge the gap between Toronto and Delhi over the phone. She was withdrawn, anxious. “I never thought I’d be alive and Aarushi dead”, she said, her voice quivering. “I’ve lost my reason to live. But my own child is going through this anguish. I have to see her through it”. Their entire extended family believes in the innocence of Nupur and Rajesh because they insist they have not seen credible evidence to support this “outlandish” accusation. The family, the author says, is cosmopolitan and to them, honour killings are a “heinous concept”. And the very idea “that the possibility of sex would lead to murder is incomprehensible to us.” At most it would have led to the servant being fired and the child spoken to very seriously.

There’s pruning – and BMC pruning

TAKE a look at the way the BMC has pruned this tree located on S.V. Road at Bandra West because of fungal infection. It’s a little like shaving a child’s head at the first sign of dandruff! It may be recalled that a few months back the BMC had detected over 100 city trees hit by a fungal infection and had tried to treat them using generic pesticides. As of now there are over 100 infected trees in Matunga, Bandra, Santa Cruz, and Khodadad Circle in Dadar, and they are fast withering. They include several decadesold rain trees (Samanea Saman), popular for their wide canopies and pink flowers. According to a 2007 tree census, Mumbai had nearly 19 lakh trees, several of which were fully grown rain trees. A mature rain tree absorbs close to 30 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. Besides they provide shade and also bring down the temperature of the surrounding area. According to mycologists, the white growth on the trees could even be lily bug, which spreads from tree to tree when left unchecked. The lily bug infection can be treated by spraying tobacco water. Or if it has not spread much, the white growth can be manually removed. But all this seems beyond the

Aarushi’s parents Rajesh and Nupur Talwar.

FUNGAL TREATMENT... This is the state of a decades-old rain tree at S.V. Road in Bandra, post a ‘treatment’ by the venerable trees department of the BMC for fungal infection. It is a wonder they have left so much! And yet if aam aadmi takes a pair of pruning shears to a tree that threatens to topple over, what a noise is made.

very member of the extended family, here and overseas, as excerpts from this article from the online version of the Toronto Star in Canada show. It is written by Shree Paradkar, first cousin to Nupur Talwar, whose mother is sister to Lata Chitnis, Aarushi’s grandmother. And that was a surprise to us. Nupur is a Maharashtrian, daughter of Wing Commander (Retd.) Chitnis, who married a Punjabi for love. Not the sort of person who would be so incensed as to take a golf club to her daughter’s head for false notions of “honour”. We have provided a link for you to read the whole article for yourself as well. Shock. Rage. Disillusionment. “My cousin Nupur Talwar and her husband Rajesh, were convicted Monday in India of murdering their only child Aarushi and trusted cook, Hemraj. “Just this weekend, they were so hopeful. Nupur had a bit of a cough, but she and Rajesh thought they had a fighting chance. “Whether we’re acquitted or convicted, we have to keep on fighting to find the real killers”, Rajesh told me. They were going about their usual routine, including a visit to a Hindu temple. “Monday night, they were

“More to point, prosecutors did not have credible evidence to back the stated motive. It has been horrifying to watch gossip in a cynical society morph into the unquestioning truth. But it has been absolutely terrifying to watch the country’s premier investigative agency shun facts to build a case around a theory. “Rajesh’s older brother Dinesh Talwar, 53, has devoted his life to fighting for Rajesh. Within hours of the verdict, he and I were on the same panel on a prime time show known for its querulousness. He looked exhausted but stoic, sticking to facts. His wife Vandana was also doing the media rounds, fighting, fighting, fighting. Other than fighting tooth and nail, what option do we really have? http://www.thestar.com/news/w orld/2013/11/25/aarushi_talwar_ couple_found_guilty_of_murdering _teen_daughter.html

he Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is taking no chances over the question of giving a go ahead for the construction of the proposed Pedder Road Flyover. The MSRDC is awaiting the green clearance from the Union Ministry for Environment and Forest for the proposed flyover. Sources in the MSRDC while speaking to ADC on condition of anonymity disclosed that most of the contentious issues have been resolved amicably to the satisfaction of all the concerned parties. The sources disclosed that the recent all-party meeting over the proposed flyover project ended on a positive note. However, given the past

Popular playback singer Asha Bhosle has been vociferous against the flyover plan. lest there are any last minute hurdles. It may be recalled that noted playback singer Asha Bhosle had raised strong objections to the fly-

over and also threatened to migrate to the Gulf if the project went ahead. Following which the Environment ministry had laid down strict guidelines on construction methods of not allowing dust to rise, installing noise barriers, plantation of trees and plants etc. along the flyover. As per plans, a four-lane, 4 km long flyover will be built between Haji Ali Circle to Wilson College junction. Every time the authorities felt that the issue had been resolved, one or the other of the concerned parties raised objections with the Environment ministry thus leading to further delays. Sources added that until and unless the Centre gives its clearance for the project, the corporation will not give its nod for its construction.

JNPT, which had grossly failed to handle international cargo that was later transferred to a private port in Gujarat, due to labour protests in their private terminus, has promised senior citizens a ride on a cruise equipped with all amenities and medical facilities through its Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) cell. (LtoR): G.K. Vasan Minister of Shipping and Milind Deora, Minister of State for Shipping, during the launch of Minister of Shipping G.K. Beautification of Elephanta Island project, at the Gateway of India, on Wednesday.

For stranded truckers, drinking water is a ‘luxury’ at the JNPT.

Vasan and Minister of State for Shipping Milind Deora launched five projects, including Senior Citizens Boat Cruise, Beautification of Elephanta Island, making Gateway of India a tourist-friendly place by partnering, providing well equipped gymnasium and port visit by school students at the Gateway of India on Wednesday. Deora said, “It is our constant effort to make Mumbai more tourist-friendly. As part of this effort, Kanhoji Angre Island is being developed and its lighthouse will soon be opened for tourists.” When asked about recurring ‘go slow’ protests at the port and its cascading effect

sparking traffic jams at the JNPT gates, N.N. Kumar incharge chairman said, “the protests have been called off and everything will be in order.” Kumar added, “Show cause notice has been sent to the workers in GTI terminus and they have replied to it. I will examine the reply and action will be taken appropriately.” A container vessel driver was crushed in between two vehicles on Monday and a truck ran over the leg of another driver on Tuesday. When Vasan asked about the plight of the 3,000-odd container vehicle drivers, he refused to comment.

Junaid Khan was on his way home along with his friend Mohammad Hussain, when the accused Imtiyaaz Memon alias Chor, who was under the influence of alcohol, began abusing and subsequently beating them. the place’s proximity to the sea, only makes things worse. So, during nights, with their homes now scorched out of existence, they’re left with little option but to hang on to whatever’s left; battling with the cold, the slew of mosquitoes which arrive as always. “Idhar se jayega, to koi aur ghus jaega hamaare ghar mein. Phir hum kya karega. Government ko ake humko hamaara ghar dena chahiye,” is the usual retort of the locals who insist on holding on to their handful of belongings and ‘spot’ lest they gets usurped. It may sound preposterous but fact is, the place is run by slumlords and their henchmen and their fears are real. However, the officials refuse to arrive and take cognisance of the fire-affected and their ‘spots’. A week later, things haven’t changed for

The exhibition will remain open for public from 10 am to 7 pm on Thursday and Friday.

Historical background: The first train on the Western line in Bombay (now Mumbai) chugged in on November 28, 1864, heralding a new era of seamless and direct connectivity of Bombay with Gujarat and also further northwards while giving tremendous boost to the socio-economic development of the city. The first-ever terminus on the western line was at Grant Road station. In 1873, the line was further extended to south to open a new terminus at Colaba. Later, it was closed in 1930 and Churchgate became the terminus for the western suburban trains. Today Western Railway runs 1,305 suburban services daily carrying about 35 lakh commuters.

the better. The zone torched out of shape turns into a blackened land mass during the day when the sea moves out leaving space for human movement. The affected comprise mostly Banjaras working at a nearby Sassoon Docks, who’d clean fish for a living, and Bengali Muslims, who work as domestic help in nearby homes. As local Madrassas pitch in with what they can to alleviate the pain and neighbouring slum-residents pooling in resources to cook and feed the affected, the State continues to look the other way. There are those stray volunteers who drop by with clothes for the homeless infants, spend some time to teach, play, but that doesn’t take away the onus from the State. The catastrophe fails to grab the fancy of the politicians who were loud and resonant in their support for Campa Cola residents. The

Ambedkar Nagar residents have as much locus standi on their properties as the Campa Cola residents but most of the media and the polity simply chose to ignore the poor’s issue. It probably isn’t exactly fashionable to bay for the cause of the slum-dweller or demand time and relief on ‘humanitarian grounds’ from the authorities. And, even as the delay only drives home this bias even further, the 1,000-odd residents of the scorched Ambedkar Nagar continue to risk falling prey to real diseases like Dengue and Malaria. After dusk, when the tide comes in and the residents crawl atop higher places to stay dry above the sea below, the screams for the need for social justice at least on “humanitarian grounds,” get deafening. The division bench of Justice V. M. Kanade and Justice M. S. Sonak said that along with the concerned authorities, the tenants of such buildings should act responsibly and vacate the premises before any damage is caused. The builder had entered into an agreement to re-develop the building and while 70 per cent of the occupants have agreed, the remaining are refusing to vacate the premises despite being assured that they would be provided with rent by the builder to obtain alternate accommodation. While the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Fire Department have given their no-objection certificate, MHADA authorities are insisting that it is the builder’s responsibility to provide the residents with alternate accommodation. It may be recalled that the court, in its last hearing, had voiced its concern over an increasing number of building collapse incidents in the city during the last one year, and had said that authorities like the Municipal Corporation and MHADA must act in a more responsible manner, rather than shifting the blame on each other. The court had also directed MHADA to hold an inquiry and pass appropriate orders. Based on this, the court on Wednesday was

informed by MHADA that it was ready to evict the tenants. “However, they are refusing to move out. And the builder should also assure us that the he will pay the rent for transit accommodation to these tenants,” the counsel representing MHADA said. Reacting to this, the bench said, “Why are the tenants refusing to vacate the building? Should the building tell them first that it is going to collapse? They should first shift to transit accommodation, after which the court will consider all their issues. We ask the developers to file an undertaking stating that they would provide rent to all the tenants, pending a redevelopment of the project, by December 3.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

Does this explain why so little has been done to improve national security in the past decade of UPA rule? It partly does because Digvijay Singh is not the only Congress leader who has gone out of his way to underplay the role played by jihadists and Pakistan in terrorist attacks on Indian soil. Rahul Gandhi has himself, according to Wikileaks, admitted to an American ambassador that Hindu terrorists were the real threat to India's security. We eat in such a way that there will be peace in our body and in our consciousness and the Buddha told this story. A young couple who wanted to get out of the country to settle in a country where there is more freedom, they brought their little boy with them and half the way toward the desert they'd run out of food and they knew that they were going to die, the three of them. So they made a terrible dramatic decision, killing the little boy and eat a mouthful of the flesh of the boy every day with the hope of getting out of desert to go to another country. So they killed the little boy and each of them ate a morsel of the flesh and hanged the rest of the body on their shoulder to dry for the next day. And after having eaten a morsel of the flesh, they cried. Oh, our dear little boy, where are

Commandos from Delhi to Mumbai. The NSG commandos were ready to deploy within twenty minutes of the first shots being fired in the Leopold Café but did not get to Mumbai till 5.30 a.m. on November 27 because the highest officials in the land were so utterly incompetent. The Cabinet Secretary took more than an hour to give orders for deployment and then could not find a transport plane to bring the commandos to Mumbai and the criminal incompetence continued after they landed in the city. Can you believe that there was no transport at Mumbai airport except a convoy of white ambassadors to convey the Home Secretary. Gujral – the gentleman FORMER Indian Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral would occupy a place among those individuals, who, notwithstanding their personal political inclinations, earnestly believed that politics and political personalities should exude civility and benign dispositions. Kuldip Nayar’s article, ‘A thorough gentleman in Indian politics’ (November 26) on Gujral reinforces the same LETTER OF viewpoint. For, Gujral, it THE DAY might be said, belonged to the group of political liberals who expressed their liberal viewpoints emphatically. He was one of those who admired Jawaharlal Nehru’s framework for a liberal secular democracy in India, with a special emphasis on welfare for the country’s millions of downtrodden and poverty stricken citizens. It was the age of apparent innocence and many thoughtful Indians were fired, and rightly, with Nehru’s optimism and hope for India’s future of potential greatness as a nation. The sense of duty and working for the benefit of society, at large, with scruples firmly in place, was firmly embedded in the characteristic mould of Gujral. But, somewhere along the way, India appeared to have lost the sense of scruples and sensitivities, to an extent, in its socio-political ambit. Leftist politics became associated with rigidity, and socialist economics interpreted as an end by itself. The effect was disastrous. India became probably the only parliamentary democracy in the world to be marked with red-tape, stagnation, spiraling poverty, and massive corruption, collectively. Idealism eclipsed pragmatism. Those well-meaning individuals enthusiastic about leftist policies, saw their beliefs crying out for adjustment, and were compelled to adjust, much to their disliking, to new realities. Inder Kumar Gujral is possibly among them. But, he admirably stuck to his foundation of ethics and always spoke of the need

for high moralities and accountabilities in politics. Genuine welfare for the needy and the poor are indispensable for any society, regardless of the orientation of its government. Vote-hungry Congress SACHIN was decorated with the Bharat Ratna as a vote getting gimmick by the Congress, to win the votes of millions of Sachin fans. Particularly, the size of Bcosule, Revital, Montex LC and Crocin has changed and the rates are have increased. This is my personal experience. Thus people have to take a larger dose or more tablets than usual. Such a practice is indeed, very shameful, unethical and disgraceful as such companies want to earn more profit at the cost of human lives and their health. It is no surprise then that more than 60 per cent of research publications are in English, with the rest in vernaculars giving titles, abstracts or parallel translations in English. Non-English speaking countries are putting a great effort to improve their English-speaking abilities, as English is seen as the Language of Science. Thanks to emails, chatting, SMS and other computer and cell-phone operations all over the world, scientific English is receiving a further jolt. Guest of honour Your best friend’s wedding is just a month away and you don’t know what to wear? Rhea Dhanhoora & Priyanka Singh lay out five looks for you, according to the kind of occasion that you have to attend, based on the hot trends of this wedding season Look #1: go traditionaL

W

hile we all go ga-ga over the bride and groom’s wedding finery, another extremely important quotient of the wedding celebrations is mostly ignored — the guests! Even the guests face several dilemmas while choosing their outfits to attend a wedding. From not being underdressed to not being overdressed (lest you start looking like the bride) — there are a lot of things that a guest needs to consider before getting ready to indulge in the wedding festivities. We get you some of the best designerwear that you can opt for to look your best at your loved one’s wedding. We have put together looks for various occasions of an Indian wedding, according to what’s in fashion lately. To know more about what’s in trend, we spoke to designer, Neelu Oberoi and she shared with us the latest wedding trends that the guests should follow while picking their outfits. Here is her take on various aspects of a guest’s look:

Although you can go traditional and doll up in an anarkali and heavy jewellery, make sure to pick a few subtle pieces, so that you don’t overshadow the bride. Also, pick a bright colour as it lightens your look a bit.

Put a ring on it

Just a touch of jewellery is enough to make this look stand out. Pick up this ring from www.velvetcase.com. Price `3,400

traditionaL coLours

A traditional look involves a heavily embellished suit with bold splashes of colour. In classic purple and green, with hints of gold, we love this outfit from www.samor.com. Price On request

Pretty PearLs

Pick up these beautiful pearl jhumkas from www.velvetcase.com for a truly traditional touch. Price `36,640

tiPs & tricks for your Look Colours: Neon and western colours, such as corals and aquamarines, are best for the pre-wedding functions. More traditional, jewelled colours, such as emerald, jade, blue, gold and pink, should be opted for the wedding day. Silhouettes: You can choose from saris, lighter lehengas, kalidar kurtas, jacket lehengas and stitched saris for Indian occasions. Opt for gowns, corset lehengas, trendy saris and dresses for the cocktail and reception celebrations. Embellishments: For the traditional functions, keep the look more muted with embroidery such as gota, zardozi and opt for Swarovski embellished work for western functions.

Catching up with Juhi Juhi Chawla recently spent a quiet birthday this month, dotted with work committments and a special visit to the temple. Rohit Pramar catches up with the actress, who tells us more about her life as a working mother and her involvement with radiation awareness drives ollywood actress Juhi Chawla, who will be next seen in a negative role in Gulaab Gang, recently celebrated her birthday on November 13 with close friends and family. The mother of two, has had a long film career which she has managed along with a busy personal life. In an exclusive conversation, Juhi talks about managing work and life, her commitement to mobile phone radiation awareness and her career in Bollywood.

B

driver, accountant, nanny, cook and manager. She wrote all of them in the profession field and the official said, “No madam, you can use only two or three words.” The mother then simply wrote ‘Mom’. I would like to remind all working mothers that you can’t do everything. So, don’t kill yourself over it. Do how much you can, do what makes you happy and tell yourself at the end of the day, that you did the best you possibly could.

You have been a part of several great films. How do you feel when you watch them now? I was in Delhi recently, when luckily, my evening shoot was cancelled. I turned on the TV and Ishq was playing. I haven’t really seen any of my films post-dubbing — apart from at premiers or with my own family. I sat and saw the movie and I couldn’t believe that I could act like that. It was a wonderful feeling.

When you’re not working, what do you like to do? When I am not working professionally, I am working around the house — taking care of the little things and attending to social matters. I have no free time. I learn music and that is de-stressing. I follow a certain regime, which helps.

When you’re watching movies that you’ve acted in, do you get nostalgic and miss the past? I am grateful for everything I have and believe in enjoying every moment. I feel it’s best to look forward. Right now, I’m doing just that. Whatever happened in the past, happened for the best, but now it’s gone. It’s time to look forward and work towards the future.

Tell us about the women in your life. Who inspires you on a daily basis? Firstly, my mother-in-law. She’s been a pillar of strength whenever I’ve been feeling low. There have been times I have just held on to her, cried in her lap and not let her go. She’s been very kind, loving and supportive of me. Sometimes she says, “Why aren’t you working ? Be happy, go out and work.” She’s a very spiritual lady and that gives her immense strength. She is like a lotus in a pond — she rises above everything. I hope that some day, I can get there too. Another person I admire is Neeta Ambani. I’ve known her for a few years now and I recently attended her birthday. She is a woman with many achievements — she heads Mumbai Indians and my children go to her school, which has been voted one of the best international schools in the country. Her birthday was planned so well, you could just tell that she was behind it all. You want to try to be like her — she’s beautiful, affectionate and amazing.

How difficult is it to manage family and work? Women generally try to manage every aspect of both and end up doing a lot. Fortunately, over time, I have delegated some of my work to my staff, both at home and work. So, the basic running of the house and my kids’ needs are care of and I just have to overlook things. I don’t have to cook and clean the house since that part is dealt with. My family supports me and that is a big help. All I would like to say to mothers is that the definition of a mom is ‘you are everything’. There was once a woman who was trying to fill You’ve been making people aware of the various health in a form. The official at the other end of the table said, “Put hazards of mobile phone radiations. When did you first in your name and your profession.” The lady filled in — become aware of them?

I feel that information should be first passed on to people of your fraternity and they can then pass it on when they think it’s necessary or appropriate. I first became aware of the hazards of mobile phone radiation about three years ago, when mobile towers were put up right across our home. That was the first time I even realised what a mobile tower antenna looked like and I started taking a closer look into the matter. After writing numerous letters to various authorities, just as I was about to give up, I was joined by Mr. Munshi. That is when things started picking up. We put up banners and met the minister. Soon enough, the press picked it up. Articles and interviews started appearing in the media and in the last one year, a lot has been spoken regarding the issue and more people are now aware of mobile towers, the radiations and the threat they pose. Earlier there was nothing known about it. It is always a good thing to be in a a position where you are be able to spread awareness. Personally. what precautions do you take? In our bedrooms, I have shielding solutions installed, so that those areas are completely free from radiation. I even have radiation lines in my hall and lobby area. I would rather be safe than sorry. I encourage the use of a wired land line whenever possible. Cordless phones have more radiation, so ideally, they should be avoided. What is your fitness routine? I have been practising yoga regularly for the past five to six years. Recently, I started doing some Pilates as well and although it’s tough, I find it energising. When I am not in the mood for either of the two, I take a walk. You have lovely, glowing skin. Give our readers some of your skincare secrets. I haven’t had pimples for years! Having clear skin like mine is simple. All you need to do is drink an entire bottle of water when you wake up.

ancient secrets

« 5 ways to rock: foil print outfits 1. pick good colours Foil printing is all about adding a little bling and glamour to your outfit. However, the print works best with muted colours such as white, grey, black and navy blue or jewel toned purple, maroon and bottle green.

Tailors used to sew dresses around Marilyn and other actresses tightened the skin on their faces with the help of surgical tape. Priyanka Singh tells you about some beauty tricks, ranging from smart to bizarre, that previous generations used in the name of vanity

look began.

Face shaving All of us have facial hair and most of us either get it waxed or bleached. But, facial hair is not only an enemy to women of our age, but also bothered our counterparts in the past. Glamour queens such as Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor despised it equally and used to shave their faces! This was done to reflect light better and appear more radiant on camera. In fact, women from ancient Rome also used shaving, apart from other means such as plucking, stripping using a resin paste, or scraping the hair off with a pumice stone

BrieF Face liFts >> Before face lifts, primer, laser hair treatments and everyone’s favourite, the bodycon dress, women had to go to some pretty strange lengths in order to look as picture perfect as this model. Read our article to find out why we’re glad it’s changed!

Even the seemingly timeless beauties of Hollywood fell prey to passing time. In order to make their skin look younger, several actresses used surgical tape to pull their facial skin back and make it appear tighter. The tapes were then hidden with the help of their wigs. Spotted taking a leaf out of the beauty diaries of actresses such as Marlene Dietrich and Lucille Ball, who were well-known fans of facelift tape in their heydays, was American singer and actress, Cher. She reportedly used this trick at an event as recently as 2010.

the literal Bodycon dress Before bandage and bodycon dresses arrived to accentuate your figure, Marilyn Monroe used to do the same in her intrepid way. She was so particular about her dresses flattering her body in all the right places that she was often sewn into her dresses. Also, apparently, there were instances where she glued the fabric onto her skin, taking the term skintight notches higher. Well, all we can say is, lucky tailors.

3. get your makeup right The last thing you want is too much going on with your outfit. Between your clothes and the jewellery, things may get a little too busy, so keep your makeup simple to let the foil print shine. A smokey eye with nude lips, or simply lined eyes with a bold lip is the way to go.

Fair & lovely The obsession with fairer skin has been prevalent since the reign of the ancient Romans and probably way before that as well. If historians are to be believed, white skin was an indication of the leisure class and was placed highest on the Roman beauty ladder. Roman women applied face whitener such as chalk powder, crocodile dung, white marl and white lead after bathing. Lead was known to be poisonous, but despite that was in popular demand. This quite clearly indicates the level of fascination with a fairer skin tone. Other ingredients used in whiteners included beeswax, olive oil, rosewater, saffron, animal fat, tin oxide, starch, cucumber, anise, mushrooms, honey, rose leaves, almond oil, rosewater, lily root and eggs. We just have one question though — the person who discovered crocodile dung as a face whitener... what was he/she thinking?

dove deep pure Face wash Dove has introduced its new range of face wash that consists of three variations — Go Fresh, Beauty Moisture and Deep Pure. I tried the Deep Pure variety, which claims to give you deeply cleansed and smoother skin. However, after using it for a month, I did not see a blip of a difference in my skin. It didn’t seem deeply cleansed, or gave me smooth skin. All in all, I was quite disappointed by the product. price `90 for 50g star rating * where Available in retail stores across the city park avenue Beer shampoo Park Avenue’s Beer Shampoo has been well-received. They have now introduced two new varieties — Dry Hair and Oily Hair. The Dry Hair one works as promised. It moisturises your hair just right — my hair was soft and not too heavy. My only problem was that my hair suddenly started getting too oily on the third day. That said, I still use it because it leaves your hair feeling wonderful. The shampoo for oily hair, made my hair quite smooth. There was also a bit of lustre to it. And all this without using conditioner, which was a pleasant surprise. However, the frizz was as usual. After two uses though, I developed dandruff on my crown, which only means that it didn't suit my scalp. price `160 for 200ml star rating *** (Dry) *** (Oily) where Retail stores across the city

4. go easy With foil prints, it is very easy to go over-thetop. Look classy by making sure you pick an outfit that has a minimal amount of foil print. Too much, and you may look more tacky, than classy. 5. Be experimental Right from pants, to sweatshirts, dresses and skirts, there is an incredible variety of clothes that you can experiment with. Try brightening up your work day with a foil print top paired with leggings, or get a foil print pull-over — it’s super casual, with just the right amount of spunk.

>> With almost no jewellery and makeup, Beyonce gets it right when it comes to pulling off a foil print gown

1. short cut A simple white t-shirt with foil print as regal as this will make you stand out in a crowd. Pick this t-shirt up from Guess. price On request

efore safe cosmetics entered the market and scientifically proven surgeries claiming to reverse your age boomed, what did the ladies do to stay up to beauty’s high standards? While a utopian mindset compels us to believe that the world wasn’t so superficial then and women hardly made a fuss about their looks, sadly, that wasn’t the case at all. Instead, there were other means that women put to use in order to enhance their looks, spanning from dangerous to outright whacky. In this intriguing exploration of the cosmetic world, we went as far back as the blooming days of Hollywood beauties and even further, to the days of ancient Rome, from where, perhaps, the obsession with the ambiguous idea of how-a-woman-is-supposed-to-

2. accessorise well Wearing an outfit with foil prints adds sparkle to your outfit. Keep accessories to a minimum. Opt for a simple pair of solitaire earings to go with your dress. If you’re wearing an Indian outfit, try opting for kundan or polka jewellery. They are understated, elegant and will balance your look well.

deepika padukone

urvashi rautela

We love Deepika and as always, her hair is well styled (if not a little boring) and her makeup is spot on. But, there’s nothing about this look that says star. The dress is run-off-the-mill and we’ve seen this black dress and nude heel look on her a dozen times. Switch it up a little Deepika!

We love the low bun, but she should have opted for a muted lipstick with such a loud, blingy dress. The dress is a pretty shade of gold, but the shiny red earings and pointed toe shoes make her look too vampish. A little less makeup or a more muted dress next time, Urvashi!

crimson nails and pearly whites Wealthy ancient Roman women painted their nails from an imported red dye that was produced by an Indian insect. Romans were also fixated with white teeth and so, fake teeth made from bone and ivory were quite popular. You could do major damage to your elite reputation if you smiled and your teeth were on the darker side. Very particular about their breath too, they used baking soda before they had modern breath fresheners.

Anjali is much younger than she looks here and we think her makeup and slight poof are to blame. Her dress is simple and pretty but the long necklace and yellow belt are clashing and we wish she’d opted for more delicate shoes to look a little prettier.

We love, love, love the side bun and the pretty pink makeup. Her dress is subtle and she’s kept accessories to a minimum. It seemed like Vishakha was our favourite — then we glanced at her shoes. They’re not horrendous, but they’re too edgy for her otherwise fun, feminine look.

Katrina shows us why the bodycon refuses to fade out. Her hot red dress fits her like a dream and we appreciate that she’s kept the rest of her look minimal — with a dash of red on her lips. Her closed nude heels are a good way to finish off a flawless look. She gets a big thumbs up.

>> Having your hair look like a big mess at work will make you come across as unprofessional

Hair raising

Do you find yourself tugging and smoothening your hair so it behaves itself at work every day? Dev Goswami helps out by giving you five easy-to-wear hairstyles that will stay put and look neat at work

T

here’s a reason that most offices have dress codes — it’s to cultivate a professional work environment that’s not messy or distracting. But, even if your’s has a casual atmosphere, you still have to ensure your hair isn’t unruly. A messy look can make you seem unprofessional. Take a look as we suggest some work friendly hairstyles that look professional and are easy to wear.

Sweep it to the Side Tired of the classic pony? Add an interesting twist to it by following these steps: l Take a handful of your hair from the crown of your head and hold it up while you comb back the underside. l Create a side parting on the side opposite to the one where you combed and brush it all the way back. l Secure the hair behind you with a band to result in a pony. l For the hair on your crown — leave a few strands falling over your face and tuck the rest in over your ear, securing it with a pin.

braiding to the right

This sophisticated hairstyle, with your plait resting over one shoulder, is quite a popular work look. Here’s how to get it: l Create a haphazard side parting with a widetoothed combed on any one side of your head. l With your hands, pull all the hair to the side opposite the parting and over your shoulder. l Divide your hair into three sections, braid it and secure it with a band. l If you want a slightly more casual look, pull out a few strands of hair from the edge of your forehead and let it fall around your face.

« career advice

I have a colleague with whom I share a good working relationship. Recently, we have also hung out after work, for a drink or two, with friends. However,

Classy but not over-the-top, this side-parted hairstyle is great for long, straight hair: l Use a comb to create a deep side parting. l Tuck the hair on the side of your part behind your ear. Use a comb to smoothen it and use pins to ensure that your hair stays in place. l Comb the hair on the other side of your parting and let it fall at an angle, just over the corner of your eye.

all tucked back This pinned back look, though quite simple, will definitely set you apart: l Create a side parting, take a handful of your hair on the side opposite your parting and loosely pin it over your ear, so that it drapes over one eye. l Slide on a headband, covering the pin. l Roll up your hair behind you and pin the ends of your hair to the hair on the nape of your neck creating a faux bun.

curly queen If you want a cute hairstyle and spend all day dealing with unruly curls (or want some!), this look will help you out: l Blow dry your hair to add some bounce. l Create a deep side part on one side of your head, directly above your temples. l Use a pin to hold the front of your hair on the side opposite your parting. l Using a curling iron, just curl the ends of your hair slightly, pointing towards your face. l If you have curly hair, use a soft mousse to straighten the top of your hair near the parting and skip the curling iron.

dealing with loud phone converSationS I have a colleague who sits right next to me and talks on the phone rather loudly. To add to the misery, it’s often a personal conversation she’s having rather than a work related call. I find it terribly distracting and rude, but don’t know how to broach the subject without ruining my relationship with her. Any suggestions? — ananya Sahay, Malad dear ananya, Looks like your colleague cannot differentiate between good and bad office manners. The best way to deal with her would be to calmly tell her to conduct her conversation softly or to step out of the office and move to an area where she isn’t disturbing anyone while attending her calls. Tell her politely that you find it distracting and that it hampers your pace of work.

I feel uncomfortable whenever he comes up to me to talk about it in office and don’t know how to tell him to stop, without seeming insensitive. — navya roy, dadar dear navya, Your friend is evidently going through a bad phase. If you don’t want to involve yourself, the best thing would be to simply hear him out. In all likelihood, all he needs is someone to vent to. If you don’t want to be his shoulder to cry on, especially in office, gently tell him that you are swamped and would prefer to have this conversation after work hours. As a last resort, you can be frank with him. Tell him that it makes you uncomfortable and that you don’t think you are capable of giving him sound advice. Jaid has been blamed for exposing Drew to alcohol and drugs during her wild preteen years when she used to take the then nine-year-old Drew to clubs. The result? Drew Barrymore was admitted into a rehabilitation centre at the very young age of 14! teen trouble: Ah! Teenage angst! If you thought the terrible twos were a headache, wait till your child hits their teens. During these years, you should give your children a bit of freedom, but balance it with rules that they understand cannot be broken.

« Top 5: Tips To Throw an

eco-friendly birThday bash for your child Why forget about Mother Nature, when you can have the same amount of fun by being a more sensitive to her needs? Priyanka Singh tells you how to make your little one’s party

M

ost of us neglect our responsibility towards nature when we are having fun. However, we can have the same amount of fun while keeping the well-being of our environment in mind. Children are at their receptive best when very young and they observe and adapt to things very quickly. If you want your child to grow up as an environmentally conscious adult, then you need to set a precedent yourself. Begin with the most exciting event in your child’s life — their birthday! Here are ways in which you can make you child’s party an eco-friendly one.

decoration

A week in advance, you can tell close family members to invest one hour of their day in making handmade decorations out of newspaper. Or, use colourful dupattas to get your house party ready.

Young adult 27-year-old actress and singer Lindsay Lohan’s addiction troubles are well known. She has been to rehabilitation centres to battle her addictions and while as a mother, supporting your child would be the first thing that comes to your mind, Dina Lohan actually arrived at the centre with a camera crew from an entertainment channel to film Lindsay at her rehab programme. Fresh counsel: This is a time in your children’s lives when they are venturing out into the world and trying to stand on their own two feet. The best thing you can do, is let them be. If they make mistakes, be there to support them, but let them clean up their own mess.

rom taking a nine-year-old girl to nightclubs to shooting an overtly sexual video featuring all your daughters, a few celebrity moms can give us valuable insights into how you should not be bringing up your children. Read on as we tell you about the horrendous mistakes that a few celeb mothers have made and tips that will help you deal with your children.

toddler It is a known fact that Suri Cruise boasts of a wardrobe that would make most women jealous. But, a five-year-old in high heels and bright red lipstick — that’s a bit too much, right? And, that is also exactly the kind of parenting you should be avoiding. We don’t know whether to hold Suri’s father, Tom Cruise, or her mother, Katie Holmes, responsible for this. But, whoever it might be, Katie, after her divorce with

Tom, has (sensibly) decided to ban makeup and high-heels for her young daughter. Another mistake that you do not want to repeat is the one Britney Spears made. She was pictured driving a car with her son, Sean Preston, sitting on her lap instead of in a safe baby car seat. toddler tips: Taking care of toddlers can be quite a challenge, but remember that their health and safety comes first, no matter what. If you’re not sure about something harming your child, it’s better to get an expert’s view on it before you proceed with the same. Also, children are most impressionable at a young age — habits that are inculcated right now, good or bad, will last a lifetime.

teens Of the many things that a mother has to be to her daughter, one of the most important would be being a good role

From being party to her daughter Kim’s desire to lose her virginity to her boyfriend at the age of 15, to shooting a Kardashian Family video song which has been criticised for sexualising her teenage daughters, Kendall and Kylie, Kris Jenner’s parenting choices are definitely questionable. Kim Kardashian, in an interview with Oprah, stated that her mother agreed to put her on birth control when she was only 15-years-old. Kris is also known as ‘momager’ — a mom and a manager to all her children. adult advice: This should be the time when you enjoy your own life to the fullest without worrying too much about your children or their lives. Having too much of a presence in their lives will just harm everyone concerned and so, do not forcibly try to be a part of their lives or impose your opinions on them. The imposing tactic always backfires in the case of adult children.

Food

Homemade cakes are the healthiest option — you have control over the ingredients and your cake does not contain any of the harmful additives, preservatives and artificial colours that ordered cakes have. Make tiny sandwiches and cookies at home and wrap them up in a small, colourful cloth. In this way, you will not have to use paper or plastic plates. Have a lot of finger food at the table as it is popular with kids and doesn’t have to be served in plates.

drinks

Have homemade, chilled fruit juices for your little guests. They will enjoy them more than the unhealthy soda-based drinks. Also, serve them drinks in the mugs and cups that you have at home. Write children’s names on their respective cups, so that there is no need for plastic glasses.

giFts

Mention in the invitation that this is an ecofriendly party and you would appreciate if the guests don’t wrap gifts in shiny wrapping paper or gelatin sheets. Tell them that instead, they can wrap gifts up in newspaper or pack them in reusable wooden boxes.

return giFts

Shun those plastic toys as return gifts. Send them back home with a small sapling instead. Taking care of it will teach them to love and respect the environment that they live in.

Losing in Love?

« sos: soLve our situation!

Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on...

Gynelle Alves

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

I have known M. for a few years and we get along well enough. But, I wouldn’t consider us ‘close friends,’ or ‘bosom buddies’... So, when she got engaged in April, while I was happy for her, I definitely did not expect her to ask me to be her bridesmaid! Will you?

of course!

How does on say no to that?

>> Do you often find yourself forgetting small things, or go blank at the drop of a hat? Congratulations, it’s most definitely love!

At first, it was fun! I am married with a seven-year-old and being a bridesmaid entailed a lot of girle time out... a nice change for me and my mummyhood!

Falling in love is a wonderful feeling… who wouldn’t want to? However, a study shows that you lose touch with a lot of things when you are in love. Shirley Mistry tells you more

W

e’ve all been in love at some point of time in our lives, or been in a relationship that at least felt a lot like love. Although you end up in a happy bubble, where nothing can go wrong and everything’s hunky-dory, what you don’t realise is you lose out on a whole lot! A recent study, published in the journal Motivation and Emotion, shows that people who are in love cannot concentrate. It says that they are unable to focus on tasks that require attention. This is owing to the fact that most of your cognitive resources are spent on thinking about the person you love, leaving little scope for you to think of anything else. Forty three participants, who were in a relationship for less than six months, were asked to perform a series of tasks as a part of this study, which led to the conclusion that when you’re in love, you pretty much lose all cognitive control. Here are a few things you lose out on when you’re drunk on love.

Friends We know you’re in love and you’ve found your soulmate, but this tends to put some distance between you and your

friends. Most people become so preoccupied with their relationship, they end up losing friends because they have little or no interest in their social lives anymore. While your friends are happy for you, understand that they’re an important part of your life too. It’s good to be in love, but don’t try to put one over the other on your list of priorities. Make sure you give your friends enough time as well. Also, when you’re with your friends, be with them. Texting your boyfriend or constantly harping about how amazing he is (no matter how true it is), will eventually grate on your friends’ nerves.

sleep Anyone who’s ever been in a long distance relationship knows how much sleep you can lose out on when your partner’s not with you. Between the time difference and your clashing schedules, it comes down to one important question — sleep or Skype? Chances are you’ll pick Skype or a marathon texting session, compromising on precious sleep hours. While you’re all-smiles as you catch up, be prepared for the crabbiness to take over the next morning, when you realise you’ve

literally caught only a wink.

Me tiMe When love takes over, reason often goes out of the window. Right from running errands together and throwing a dinner party, to going on a date or meeting his friends for drinks, you’re doing so much together that you have almost no time to do the things you love. Curling up in bed with a book and a steaming mug of hot chocolate has its own charm, but for many people in love, their separate lives cease to exist. It is adorable to do things together as a couple, but once in a while, don’t be afraid to do your own thing, even if it is lounging in front of the television, with leftover, cold pizza for company. Me time only makes a relationship stronger.

ForgetFul Much?

A few weeks ago I agreed to set up my friend with her crush, who is quite cute. I tried to get them close but... things happened and he asked me out instead. And, I... umm... said yes. My friend is, obviously, really angry with me. She says she won’t talk to me unless I breakup with him. What do I do? — Meenal shah, chembur

dear Meenal, Uh oh! This is an ugly situation that you’ve put yourself into. And we mean that literally, because, like it or not, this is your own doing. Crushes, exes and boyfriends of friends are off-limits, unless you make sure that your friend is okay with it. You should never have said yes to begin with; but now that you have, what you need to do is weigh

KBC 2013’s first female crorepati

‘Aap crorepati ban gayi hain’ resonated one last time on the sets of India’s most loved quiz game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ as host Amitabh Bachchan congratulated hot seat contestant Firoz Fatma. Hailing from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Firoz Fatma is the first female contestant this season to walk away with the most desired title, that of a ‘crorepati’ on this life changing game show. A BSc student, Firoz never wanted her sister to stop her studies, so she sacrificed her education due to financial problems. She participated in the game show to win a certain amount to pay off her deceased father’s loan. On the second last day of the game, Firoz had lost all her hopes to make it to the hot seat. But her knowledge, which she gathered only by reading newspapers and watching news channels, helped her reach the most celebrated hot seat. After winning a crore, an excited Firoz said, “I was very nervous when I wasn’t able to make it to the hot seat in the second last episode and felt I have to go home empty handed. But then I aced the fastest finger first round and made my way to the hot seat. Also, I didn’t feel as the one-crore winner until the audience clapped and Bachchanji hugged me. It is a great feeling”. With the winning amount, Firoz wants to help her family get rid of the loan and study further. She also wants her mother to live a tension-free life. Tune in to witness the excitement of the first female crorepati of the season on Sunday December 1, at 8:30 pm on Sony Entertainment Television.

What made you accept this show? It’s a very different show, has horror with a personal touch and that’s what appealed to me as I have never done a role like this before. My character of JD is something very interesting. What is the show about? ‘Ringa Ringa Roses Khauff Begins’ is about truth hidden in mysteries and mysticism. The story revolves around myths and paranoia, in a world where unseen dangers lurk and unknown monsters roam. A world in which no occurrence comes with a known explanation; JD (Sameer Soni) and his Team P.R.A.I.D. (Paranormal Research And Investigation Department) fearlessly battle in the unknown territory of the dark forces to protect the innocent. The team embodies Jaffar, research specialist; Subbu, data analyst and Maria, an intern. They investigate cases with a supernatural or paranormal incident occurring in any part of the country. The battle becomes personal as JD's daughter is taken hostage by Rose, a paranormal entity and JD's nightmare becomes a reality. This show blurs the lines between the normal and the paranormal and brings the shadows of the darkness terrifyingly to reality.

Meeting his old friends and watching amazing talent, Sunny Deol was in great spirits when he bid adieu to the ‘Dance India Dance’ team. Theatre, television, or films, what excites you more? I like to return to television after every two or three years, but television is something I like to give my maximum time to because the results are before the audiences every night and therefore I have doled out 300 days to this show whereas films are something you need to give a time of more than a year or two before the final product is ready, so each one is different and has its plus and minus points. Any new films on the anvil? I am in talks with a few filmmakers but I need a meaty role like I had in ‘Fashion’. T

he government has decided to reduce the threshold limit of mandatory e- payment from rupees ten lakhs to rupees one lakh for both Central Excise and Service Tax payment with effect from 1st of January, 2014. Thus, a manufacturer or a Service Tax payer who has paid a

duty or tax of more than rupees one lakh in the previous financial year shall be required to pay duty or tax through internet banking. This step has been taken as measure of trade facilitation and it is expected that increased coverage of e-payment would make it convenient for the trade to pay taxes electronically. A Service provider is also required to pay Service Tax through internet banking if the total tax paid by the Service provider exceeds rupees ten lakhs in the previous financial year as per rule 6 of the Service Tax Rules, 1994.

Top 50 Indian Enterprises Aggressive On IT Investments By A Business Reporter

T

echnology is being seen as a key growth driver as the top 50 Indian enterprises are aggressive on their IT investments for this financial year despite a decline in dollar revenue in FY13, says a report by Zinnov, a market expansion and globalisation advisory firm. The study said while around 50% of these firms are focusing on mobility, private and public cloud investments in FY14, big data is their top priority for over 60% of the firms, driven by manufacturing and

media companies. “Large Indian enterprises – with their aggressive growth plans and perception of technology as a growth driver – represent a key opportunity area. With an addressable IT spend of USD 15 billion annually, it presents a massive opportunity for global and Indian technology vendors,” Zinnov Director, Market Expansion Praveen Bhadada said. Despite economic challenges, the top 50 Indian companies – selected on the basis of total annual income excluding IT companies - reported a flat capex but steady IT invest-

ments in FY13. According to the report, over 30% of IT spend is aimed at transformational projects, especially in the areas of mobility, cloud and big data. “Technology is being seen as a key driver of growth and a strategic business enabler, with focus areas being real-time information processing to drive critical business decisions, consolidation and big data analytics to develop new use cases, increasing efficiencies and creating a unified customer view across operations,” the report added.

UDUCHERRY: In a major relief to Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi and his junior Vijayendra Saraswathi, a special court yesterday acquitted them along with 21 others for lack of evidence in the sensational murder case of a temple official in Kancheepuram. Pronouncing the verdict in a packed court hall amid tight security, Principal District and Sessions Judge C S Murugan declared that all the 23 accused out of 24 stood acquitted of the charges made out against them as “there is no incriminating evidence against the accused.” One of the accused Kathiravan was murdered in March this year in Chennai. The judge said the motive for the commission of murder was not proved, since Padma and Anand Sharma, wife and son of murdered Varadarajaperumal Temple Manager, A Sankararaman respectively, had failed to support prosecution case. The two Kanchi Seers were among those who had been charged with criminal conspiracy and murder of Sankararaman, who was hacked to death in the temple premises on the evening of September 3, 2004. The judge referred to “undue interest and active participation” by the then Superintendent of Police of

Tehelka: Goa Police issue summons to Tarun Tejpal P

ANAJI: The Goa Police yesterday issued summons to Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal, accused of sexually assaulting his junior colleague. A senior police official confirmed that Tejpal has been issued summons to remain present before the investigating officer. He, however, refused to mention whether the accused has been given any date or time to present himself before the investigating authority. The Goa crime branch is investigating the complaint against Tejpal by a woman journalist. The police official also said the victim will be called to record her statement before a magistrate.

“She has been fully cooperating with the police and her statement is very crucial for the case,” the official said. Investigating officer Sunita Sawant has already met the victim in Mumbai and recorded her statement on Tuesday. The Goa Police had on November 22 lodged an FIR against Tejpal under IPC sections 376 (rape), 376 (2)(k) (rape by a person of a woman in his custody taking advantage of his official position) and 354 (outraging modesty) in connection with the incident. The police had yesterday issued an “immigration check post alert” against Tejpal so that he cannot leave the country.

Try not to push your luck, since you are already committed elsewhere.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): Diplomacy and poise are essential if you expect to get along with others. A confrontation at this juncture will only act as a setback. This is the time to improve relationship and consolidate your position. You need to earn all the goodwill that you can muster. A chance meeting with someone could lead to romance. Personal relationships are good, though you will not be able to give personal attention and care to someone very dear to you.

DHAWAN SHOWS-OFF HIS DEVILRY

Shikhar Dhawan powers India to series win over Windies with a sparkling 119 By Saumojyoti S Choudhury

K

ANPUR: India clinched the ODI series against West Indies 2-1 with a comfortable fivewicket victory in the third and final match here, riding on Shikhar Dhawan's sparkling century. The Indians first restricted West Indies to 263 for five and then overhauled the target with 23 balls to spare to lift yet another ODI trophy at home. Dhawan stole the limelight with an attacking 119 that came off 95 balls, his fifth ODI hundred, while Yuvraj Singh notched up a 74-ball 55 to seal the issue for the home side at the Green Park Stadium which was hosting an international game after a gap of nearly four years. It was a welcome return to form for Yuvraj, who cautiously put together 129 runs for the third wicket with Dhawan to set the platform for the easy win. Earlier, the trio of Kieran Powell, Marlon Samuels and Darren Bravo struck half-centuries to propel West Indies to a challenging total. Powell (70) carried on his good form from the last match and registered his second fifty of the series. Together with Samuels (71), he shared a 117-run second-wicket partnership to lay the foundation for West Indies after the visitors were put into bat by India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Towards the end, Darren Bravo (51 not out) and Darren Sammy (37 not out) played aggressively to take West Indies past the 260-run mark. Comfortably placed at 137 for one at one stage, West Indies looked set for a big score but India staged a comeback

with quick wickets to restrict West Indies to the manageable score. For the hosts, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers with figures of two for 45 from his quota of 10 overs. India's chase did not start on a very good note even though Dhawan made his intentions clear in just the second over of the innings when he clobbered Jason Holder thrice to the fence. The hosts lost Rohit Sharma in the fifth over with just 20 runs on the board. Rohit gave a straight-forward catch to Dwayne Bravo at the first slip while trying to push at an away

going delivery from Ravi Rampaul. Virat Kohli looked in great touch during his brief 19-run stay but he too was undone by Rampaul's probing length outside the off stump. While trying to leave a delivery at the last moment, the ball just brushed Kohli's bat on to the safe hands of wicket-keeper Johnson Charles. But from there on it was a Dhawan-Yuvraj show as the duo went about its business in style and shared the runa-ball century partnership. Dhawan was the aggressive one among the two. The hallmark of Dhawan's innings was his elegant drives through

the extra cover region and short-arm pulls. Dhawan sent the West Indies bowlers' on a leather hunt and found the fence at will. He completely dominated the Caribbean attack and hit as many as 20 boundaries during his fiery knock. By the time Yuvraj and Dhawan got out, they had ensured the series-clinching victory for India. Brief Scores: West Indies 263/5 in 50 overs [Kieran Powell 70, Marlon Samuels 71, Dwayne Bravo 51, R. Ashwin 2/45] lost to India 266/5 46.1 overs [Shikhar Dhawan 119, Yuvraj Singh 55, Ravi Rampaul 2/55] by five wickets.

Our bowlers have improved: Dhoni

KANPUR: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni credited the 2-1 ODI series win over the West Indies to team effort and said bowling performance has also improved a lot as compared to the recent contest against Australia. Dhoni said while the top-order batsmen were in fine form, what was heartening was the improved show by the bowlers. "If you compare the Australia series to the kind of death bowling we did today...Even if we were missing the yorkers, it was not by much. They were ending up as low full tosses and that is a big improvement for us," he said, comparing the performance of his bowlers against the West Indies with the seven-ODI series against Australia, which India won 3-2. "Also in the middle overs, the two

spinners and Raina, is a big positive," Dhoni said after India beat West Indies by five wickets in the third and

final One-dayer here to win the threematch series 2-1. On his batsmen's consistent performance, Dhoni said, "Rohit (Sharma) and Skikhar (Dhawan) gave a very good start, Virat has been as consistent as ever, and we have finished well with the lower order." Dhoni was all praise of his bowlers for restricting West Indies to a gettable target on a Green Park tract, which was more conducive to batting than expected. "Once you win the toss and field, it is important to restrict the opponents. We bowled well, but were unlucky, some edges did not carry, there were lots of playand-misses. 280 becomes quite a big score. I felt it was not a normal Kanpur wicket, it was much better to bat on. That is why 260 seemed just below a par score."

SYDNEY: Australia coach Darren Lehmann has rejected the idea of a meeting with England counterpart Andy Flower to set some sledging ground rules ahead of the second Ashes Test in Adelaide. Flower told British media that the right balance needed to be found with on-field banter after frustrations boiled over on the final day of the first Test in Brisbane, with Australian skipper Michael Clarke fined 20 percent of his match fee. Clarke was caught by a stump microphone telling pace spearhead Jimmy Anderson to expect a broken arm, with leg spin great Shane Warne claiming it was sparked by the fast bowler threatening to punch George Bailey. "Now you have brought it up (talking to Lehmann) I'll have a think about it," Flower said. "A balance has got to be found on the pitch between competitiveness and not overstepping the line." But Lehmann said talks on the issue were not necessary as he looks to build on Australia's huge 381-run victory in Brisbane that left England stunned. "From my point of view, Andy looks after his side and I look after my side, that's what you do in the game of cricket," he told commercial radio in Adelaide late Tuesday. JOHNSON SHOCKED BY TROTT MENTAL WOES SYDNEY: England's main tormentor in the first Ashes Test Mitchell Johnson today said that he was shocked to hear of Jonathan Trott's stress-related illness, sympathising after dealing with his own mental demons. Batsman Trott withdrew from the Ashes tour of Australia on Monday to deal with what was widely reported to be depression. Johnson knows all too well about the pressures of international cricket, suffering his own dark days when he hit a form slump while playing in Sri Lanka and South Africa in 2011. He later revealed he was mentally exhausted, and only a toe injury that forced him out of the game for six months saved him from contemplating retirement. "I really just wanted to get way from the game and step back," he said at the time.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2013

UMBAI: Rookie Angad Cheema of Panchkula equalled the course record with a blistering sevenunder-63 to grab the lead in the opening round of the CG Open 2013 being played at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club in Mumbai. Chikkarangappa S of Bangalore, another rookie, was placed tied second at six-under-64 along with Delhi’s Rashid Khan. Angad Cheema started the tournament with birdies on the first two holes. Angad landed his tee shot within four feet of the pin on the second hole, a par-3. The lanky golfer then hit a couple of inaccurate tee shots that resulted in bogeys on the third and fifth. Between the two bogeys he had a birdie on the fourth. The 23-year-old Cheema used his sand-wedge to great effect on the seventh, 11th and 12th where he landed his approach shots within seven feet to pick up three more birdies. It seemed to be the rookie’s day as he canned a 25footer to gain another stroke on the 14th. Angad made birdiebogey on the 16th and 17th be-

fore signing off with a spectacular eagle on the 18th. Cheema found the par-5 18th green in two shots before sinking two-and-ahalf foot eagle putt. Cheema thus equalled the course record of seven-under63 which was earlier set by Md Zamal Hossain Mollah, Ashok Kumar, Rafick Ali Mollah, Karanjit Singh Sandhu and Gurbaaz Mann. “I couldn’t have asked for a better start to the week. I hit it really well and was within four feet of the pin on four occasions. I capitalized on the par-5 holes as I made an eagle and three birdies on the four par-5s. The eagle on the final hole has given me a lot of confidence going into the second round,” said Cheema. He added, “My runner-up finish at the BILT Open last

Angad Cheema

month has helped me raise my game. The fact that I’m placed fourth on the Rolex Rankings and lead the Emerging Player of the Year race is added incentive to perform better in my first season as a professional. The key at this course will be to grab maximum opportunities on the greens.” Chikkarangappa came up with a bogey-free 64 that placed him in joint second along with Rolex Rankings leader Rashid Khan whose round of 64 featured seven birdies and a bogey. Chikkarangappa, currently ranked fifth on the Rolex Rankings, said, “My hitting was top-class and I made 15 greens in regulation. I sank three birdie putts from a distance of 10 to 12 feet and hit the green in two shots on the 16th and 18th, both par-5s, to register birdies. I’ve had a good season so far and I’m carrying forward the form from the last PGTI event where I finished tied third,” added Chikka.

It is a surprise. That is something I am looking forward to. It will be a special one.
