n Tuesday, Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital at Parel celebrated the first birthday of Aarsh Singh, a child from Navi Mumbai who is the fourth such case of Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus (VDPV) type 2, recorded in the country this year. “We did not have any plans to celebrate Aarsh’s birthday but when the doctors and the hospital staff insisted that there should be celebrations, we agreed”, said Aarsh’s father, Tejbahadur Singh. Aarsh, who was born in Bihar, was brought to Wadia hospital two and a half months ago with a history of cold, loose motions and mild fever. He was also exhibiting symptoms like looseness in the body and head lag. His condition then deteriorated further and there came a point in time, when he had to be put on a ventilator. After ruling out possibilities like the GuillianBarre Syndrome and Transverse myelitis, it was found out that Aarsh was suffering from Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus (VDPV) type 2. “It was shocking for all of us. It was painful to see my child unable to move his hands and legs. That phase was very difficult”, said Aarsh’s aunt, Aarti Singh. But the family was hopeful that Aarsh would come out of it and yesterday (September 24) they saw their hopes turning into reality. Vikas Sabnis “He is much better now. There is movement in his hands and his right leg. He is able to laugh. He will recover soon”, said Tejbahadur. The celebrations started off with Aarsh being brought out of his room that was specially decorated for his birthday to cut a cake. The staff sang the birthday song and Going to London? he next academic year might see students studying in BMC schools referring to an additional text that will talk about health, as the BMC plans to introduce a separate health education curriculum as part of the syllabus. This plan was thought of after the BMC received a good response from students in schools where they had held awareness campaigns about dengue. “We have a team that is dedicated to conducting such awareness programs in both private and BMC run schools. The response has been very good. Till date, we have covered around 183 schools,” said Dr. Mangala Gomare, Deputy Executive Health Officer, BMC. Speaking about how the idea to introduce a separate health education curriculum in the school syllabus, Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said, “Children are very receptive and also good at passing on the message to their

Death of a Taxi

wenty years. That’s the state government sentence on the scores of Premier Padminis trawling the city in their distinctive black and yellow uniforms. At one time as distinctive for Mumbai as the London taxi, the official ban on these cabs that are more than 20 years old, mean that they go off the roads. Since August, nearly 400 have disappeared into scrap dealers’ havens. Our Sushil Kadam followed a few into this workshop in Byculla and was stunned at the speed and ferocity with which they were dealt with. Twenty years on the road, 20 minutes to oblivion. The dealer said he receives around 25 such cars every day. Seven or eight men deal with a single vehicle and bring a chilling efficiency to what they do. And another piece of Bombayana bites the dust.

A Padmini dressed up as a taxi could soon be a rare sighting for Mumbaikars, as Altos and Santros take over

At the Byculla workshop, the mechanics cajole a “victim” inside

They start at the beginning, lifing off the body from the chassis

The work develops its own momentum, now down to the windscreen

Over easy, let’s get at that axle that has served so faithfully

Enough fuss and the engine is removed with brutal efficiency and a minimum of emotion

After all these years, that steering still looks good

Now for the tyres, always a concern, easy to salvage and re-sell

Ground into dust, there’s nothing left. RIP Padmini

debris from mangrove land and prosecuting those abusing such land. It will also have the responsibility of replanting mangroves in areas where the growth is less than 40 per cent. Dumping debris clandestinely, usually under cover of darkness, is a favourite ploy of builders to claim that the land was already in existence, says Mr Nene. They do this in collusion with the local authorities, and many builders have got away with a lot of illegal reclamation. However, satellite maps can prove the status of various operations and give the lie to claims of pre-existing land. Despite all this, the destruction of mangroves continues. The letter to the High Court points out that the Thane police has openly flouted court orders and thus committed contempt in respect of the area belonging to them near the Saket Complex. It also pleaded for action to be taken immediately against the concerned authorities.

NCP lashes out at CM over delay HC directs BMC to clear stand on in Mumbra rehabilitation plan compensating Wadias for merged land By A Special Correspondent

T

he NCP is in no mood to relent and has once again trained its guns on the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan over the finalisation of a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for Mumbra residents.

Jitendra Awhad Last week, another building collapsed in Mumbra and was the third such disaster in the minority-dominated township in a span of six months. Till date, 87 people have died in three collapses in Mumbra. Almost 90 per cent of the buildings in Mumbra are illegal and development norms simply don’t seem to exist, given the criminal nexus between the builders, bureaucrats and politicians. Significantly, the NCP is vociferously demanding the rehabilitation of these illegal residents.

State NCP Working President, Jitendra Awhad, has decided to undertake an indefinite fast over the long pending cluster development issue of Mumbra township. Awhad, who is also the MLA representing the MumbraKalwa Assembly constituency, has said that this situation has arisen as the state government has failed to take a decision on the demand for cluster development in the area. The CM, who heads the Housing as well as the Urban Development Departments, has invited bitter criticism. Awhad said, “How many more deaths will it take for the government to wake up? We have been pleading for a speedy decision on the cluster development of these congested colonies. If the state government fails to finalise a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for these residents, I will resort to an indefinite hunger strike from October 4.” The issue of the permanent rehabilitation of the residents of illegal buildings threatens to snowball into a major political controversy. The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) will soon start a Geographic Information System (GIS) to map properties in

Mumbra, which will be conducted in the next three months. So far, the CM has not succumbed to the pressure of the NCP. As a result, a new war of words between the ruling partners is imminent.

three days. It described the recent rainfall in western India including Mumbai as “a very unusual” rainfall pattern. Normally, the city gets rainfall as part of the retrieval monsoon every year. A low pressure has been observed over south Madhya Pradesh that has caused heavy rainfall in south Gujarat. IMD Director V.K. Rajeev said, “The city may get rain for the next three to four days. This is a very unusual retrieval pattern of the monsoon and our department has been studying the causes and effect of the new change”.

On January 1, 2008 the corporation sent a letter stating that a policy regarding compensation in lieu of the land acquired for the river widening project is being finalised. However, till date nothing has been done,” stated the petition. Reacting to this, the court was informed by the BMC lawyer that there are several claims for compensation filed and pending before the civic body. Hearing both sides, the division bench told the BMC, “The BMC officers went and widened the river and hence the land was merged. It is not that the river changed its course leading to this. n a desperate attempt to grab a piece of the redevelopment pie, unscrupulous builders seem to be running an empire of hooliganism in the twin-city. This was revealed when an 18-year-old girl was attacked by goons in the staircase of her residential building in Mira Road late on Monday night. The girl, who has been identified as Dipti Gosal, was apparently attacked for refusing to move out of her flat in Chandresh Terrace building and also for exposing irregularities by some officer bearers of the residential society who were soliciting the so-called redevelopment project in a purely unlawful manner. Built in 1997, the three-storey Chandresh Terrace building having three wings, has recently been listed as a dangerous structure by the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) - a move which Gosal alleged was undemocratic and on the behest of some office bearers of the society who had vested interests in evicting flat owners, after falsely manipulating the building as unfit for human habitation. Gosal, was also threat-

ened by goons who had barged into her house last week, following which a nocognizable (NC) complaint was registered at the Mira Road police station. Undeterred by the threats, Gosal continued to seek information under the RTI act from the civic body about the authenticity of structural audits and subsequent demolition attempts. This apparently led to a brutal attack on her with a blade by unidentified goons at about 10:30 pm on Monday. With injuries on her neck, Gosal

Initially the police registered a NC, but after the intervention of Aaam Aadmi Party (AAP) activists, the NC was converted into an FIR. “We have registered a case under section 324 of the Indian Penal Code, against an unidentified person and investigations into the case were on”, confirmed Senior Police Inspector Dhanaji Kshirsagar. “We are not going to tolerate such injustice. The police will have to register a case of attempt to murder”, said AAP activist Saumya Bahadur.

The drivers, identified as Prakash P Kunnuswami (37) and Bhoji Unnuskodi (34) from Chennai, have been arrested and are being interrogated. While sources have confirmed that the consignment was to be smuggled to Dubai, police officials are denying having information about the people involved in the illicit trade of red sandalwood.

“We detected a consignment weighing 10 tonnes which belonged to a person based in Chennai. He had declared the goods to be co-

The two have been booked under Sections 41 and 42 of the Indian Forest Act and Sections 379, 120 (b) for conspiracy and Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code and both will be produced before the court. In most cases of smuggling, this rare variety of wood, which has been banned for trade, is taken from Tamil Nadu and the Nallamalla forests in Andhra Pradesh and sent to Gujarat via Rajasthan. It fetches a high price in the international market especially in China and Japan because of its medicinal value. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Court rejects activist’s petition against Salman in hit-and-run case By Philip Varghese

T

wo months after actor Salman Khan’s counsel had objected to the intervention of social activist Santosh Daundkar in the 2002 hit-and-run case, stating that in a criminal trial, a third person who is not a part of the case has no locus standi (a right to appear in a court) to intervene, the Sessions Court accepted the contention of the counsel and rejected the activist’s petition. It can be recalled that in July, Daundkar had moved an application through his advocate Abha Singh before the court, praying that he be allowed to carry forward the allegations he had made before the Magistrate’s Court which was hearing the case earlier, before it slapped the more serious charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, leading to the case being transferred to a higher court. On December 3 last year, the activist had moved a complaint before the Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Bandra, claiming that the police had intentionally delayed the trial by not issuing and serving the summons on time, had issued summons to the wrong witnesses, and had called doctors for evidence who were not the ones who had conducted the postmortem of the deceased, among others. The magistrate had ordered a judicial inquiry into the allegations, the report of which is pending. While hearing the case on Tuesday, Judge S. D. Deshpande ruled that only an aggrieved party, complainant or witness had a right to intervene. “In this case, the applicant was neither a witness, nor a complainant, nor an aggrieved party. Hence, he could not be allowed to intervene,” the court said, while rejecting another rof Daundkar’s pleas seeking a transfer of his complaint from the Magistrate’s Court to the Sessions court about perjury action against Salman and the police for allegedly producing wrong witnesses in this case, resulting in the delay of the trial. At this, the judge said, “I have no jurisdiction to transfer the complaint. You should approach a higher court or the Principal Judge of the Sessions Court in this regard.” Meanwhile, the court deferred its order on Salman’s plea for a direction to the media to report the true and fair proceedings of the case. “Salman had already moved the High Court by filing a defamation and civil suit against some media channels for allegedly not reporting the proceedings of the case correctly. As the matter was pending in the High Court, we cannot give any ruling. The High Court had al-

ish-lovers have good reason to worry. If an amendment to the Wildlife Protection Amendment Bill 2013, presently pending in Parliament comes through, they’ll be left with little choice but to shell out premium sums to buy ‘specifically farm-bred’ fish or simply change their eating habits. That apart, lakhs of persons, associated directly or indirectly with fishing across the nation, particularly Maharashtra and Sassoon Docks in the city, will be hit the worst. “It’s impossible to pass an amendment of this sort,” says Aadhar Pratisthan President Krishna Pawle who has recently launched the Save Sassoon Docks Campaign to safeguard the interests of thousands of people associated with Sassoon Docks activities. “Making a living could well become tougher for fisherfolk all over,” he says, referring to the proposed amendment in the Wildlife Protection Amendment Bill, 2013 which is presently pending in the Parliament. Incidentally, three national conservation organisations have offered their inputs demanding changes in the proposed Wildlife Protection Amendment Bill, 2013 after it was put up for the public to give their suggestions and opinions. The Amendment bill has been introduced in the Rajya Sabha in the current session. The three organisations -Wildlife Society of Orissa, Wildlife Protection Society of India and Aaranyak, a Guwahati-based NGO - have expressed fears that if the amendment in passed in the Parliament it would drastically affect the

t was a village in the perennially drought prone Maan tehsil of Satara district which has now got rid of that tag and has bagged several state and national awards for its work in afforestation, adopting non-conventional energy sources and reaping a bumper harvest each year. Lodhwade, a village barely 80 kms away from Satara, was notoriously known to be a perennially scarcity prone village. Today the village has abundant year round water sources, meets all its energy requirements through solar power and has 862 hectares of land under cultivation. By the way, the incumbent Agriculture Commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh hails from this very village. The village which once struggled to produce any crop a year, today produces onions, sugarcane, jowar, wheat, corn, bajra, groundnuts and other cash crops. Well aware of the importance of water, the villagers have built checkdams, percolation ponds and planting 35,000 trees on barren land around the village thus ensuring year-round availability of water. The villagers have not rested with that, they recycle the waste

A bill pending in Parliament, seeking to amend the Wildlife Protection Act, could make eating fish (other than farm bred) a crime! livelihood of lakhs of fishermen across the nation. According to the provisions of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, the ‘wild animals’ that are listed in the Schedule I to VI are the only ones offered protection from hunting, trade and possession. In the proposed amendment, Section 2 (j) of the bill proposes to change the definition of the wild animal to any an-

imal specified in Schedules I to IV or found wild in nature. The term ‘animal’ is defined very broadly in Section 2(1) of the Act to include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, other chordates and invertebrates and also their young and eggs. This would mean that all the animals found wild in nature will be considered wild animals under the

proposed Act. Accordingly, all the fishes, other than the farm-bred fish, will be considered wild animals and will come under the purview of law. This has raised concerns and the wildlife workers believe if the amendment bill is accepted as is, it may turn the practice of fishing in natural wetlands in the country into an offence under the Wildlife (Protection) Act.

Together, these conservation groups have filed a memorandum for removal of Section 44 of the Wildlife Protection Act Amendment Bill, 2013 through the joint director of the Rajya Sabha directorate, asking for the withdrawal of Section 44 of the amendment bill. As per Section 44 of the Act, no person will be allowed to sell fish, or cook it and serve it unless he has a license from the Chief Wild Life Warden of the relevant state, and as per Section 49, no person will be allowed to purchase fish unless it is from a dealer authorised under Section 44. This will have a major impact on the livelihood of millions of people involved in fisheries. The Act is a criminal legislation and for it to be strictly enforceable, it is desirable that the crimes it provides for are clear and precise to all persons. Diluting the definition of wild animal as such will take away from the clarity and precision of the Act, and hence affect its enforceability. And if the amendment gets accepted, only those businessmen possessing licenses from the Chief Wildlife Warden will be able to catch fish in wetlands and sell the same. Furthermore, it will be considered an offence under the Wildlife (Protection) Act if fish is procured from unlicensed traders or even cooked. Such a violation could lead to imposition of fine up to Rs 25,000 and jail term up to three years. The amendment will have to go, if public interest is to be upheld. gajanan@draftcraft.in (Please visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihY7Eh6 0Pzo to view ‘In The Dock’, an initiative by DraftCraft Productions)

ergy conservation, all the homes in the village are fitted with solar panels that provide electricity. Besides this all the homes use smokeless solar cookers. Due to its

several initiatives in March 2006 the village bagged the Nirmal Gram award from the then President of India, Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam. Today the village earns an

Unrest in Seemandhra I

N what way are the people of Telangana region different from those of other parts of Andhra Pradesh. What is binding the people of all regions of the state is the Telugu language. On what grounds is the demand for dividing Andhra justified? How can the people of this area justify their sole claim to Hyderabad. Under great pressure, the UPA government at the Centre has worked out a solution: Hyderabad will be the joint capital for 10 years. If at all the new plan works, will the Seemandhra folks leave Hyderabad peacefully? The new plan worked out by the Centre will definitely fail. There is already clear signs of such a happening: there is unrest in Seemandhra. There are continuing strikes, agitation in coastal and other regions of Andhra. Political parties like Telugu Desam are opposed to any division of Andhra. What is to be noted is that many may finally agree to the creation of a separate state, but they will not accept the inclusion of Hyderabad in Telangana. In the next few weeks, the unrest will spread not only in Seemandhra, but in the capital itself. A violent situation is likely to arise and it may be soon out of control. The demands for Telangana and the agitation should have been nipped in the bud long ago.

UCH is being made of the TDP’s impending return to the NDA. It’s certainly ironic, considering Chandrababu Naidu had walked out of the alliance because of the man who is now its prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, as a mark of protest against the 2002 communal violence in Gujarat. But apart from proving that there are no permanent friends or enemies in politics, the expected reunion of erstwhile allies is nothing more than one of those meaningless manoeuvres that politicians hope will fool voters. Consider these realities. The BJP has virtually no footprint in Seemandhra and only a miniscule presence in Telengana. Modi’s much-hyped August rally in Hyderabad was nothing more than a media event. The saffron party, therefore, brings very little to the table in this crucial region. The two states together account for 42 Lok Sabha seats and were the bedrock of the Congress party’s victories in 2004 and 2009. Correspondingly, the BJP has little to gain from an electoral pact with the TDP. Naidu is scrambling to ward off political oblivion himself. The TRS is poised to walk off with the spoils in Telengana, having identified itself with the movement for a separate state. And in Naidu’s backyard of Seemandhra, Congress rebel Jaganmohan Reddy is the one making waves because of his strident opposition to the division of the mother state. Naidu has been missing in action in both places and losing ground as a consequence. The reunion then seems to be the result of extreme desperation on both sides. Modi is on a mad hunt for endorsement as a coalition leader. Naidu is the balm for the wound left by JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar’s rejection. The TDP may bring the NDA only a smattering of seats, if at all, but Modi hopes to prove to detractors and supporters that he can win friends and influence people. Naidu is clutching on to Modi’s coat tails in a craven attempt to regain his lost political stature. Once the darling of the corporate classes and a major mover and shaker in New Delhi, he believes that membership of a national alliance with the promise of a leading role at the Centre will lure voters to give him another chance. Naidu’s recent mission to Delhi was a time

for confession and repentance. He signed off from a possible Left-led Third Front with a sorrowful explanation to CPI(M) leaders that theirs was just a pipe dream. And then he went for a strategy meeting at Akali Dal leader Naresh Gujral’s residence with leading lights of the BJP including Arun Jaitley. With Jagan now out on bail and raring to spearhead his

Modi overshadows Chouhan in MP

T

HE Modi juggernaut seems to be overtaking the Shivraj rath in Madhya Pradesh. The forthcoming assembly elections were supposed to be BJP chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s solo show. But ever since Narendra Modi was anointed the party’s prime ministerial candidates, his cutouts, banners and posters have dwarfed those of the chief minister. Observers in the poll-bound state say that Chouhan is rapidly losing control of the party in his state and the election campaign with workers, local leaders and even government ministers rushing to curry favour with the rising star. Chauhan may win a third term for the BJP in Bhopal but the power axis is inexorably shifting to Gandhinagar and it’s playing havoc with the poll campaign. Ironically, Chouhan had carefully posi-

His word is the promise of God A MYSTIC is a phenomenon in himself and a confusion to those around him. He himself cannot tell them what he is doing, nor will they understand the real secret of the mystic. For it is someone who is living the inner life, and at the same time covering that inner life by outer action; his word or movement is nothing but the cover of some inner action. Therefore those who understand the mystic never dispute with him. Neither the laughter of a mystic nor his tears are to be taken as any outward expression which means something. His tears may perhaps be a cover for very great joy, his smile, his laughter may be a cover for a very deep sentiment. His open eyes, his closed eyes, the turning of his face, his glance, his silence, his conversation, none of these has the meaning one is accustomed to attribute to them. Yet it does not mean that the mystic does this purposely; he is made thus; no one could purposely do it even if he wished, no one has the power to do it. The truth is that the soul of the mystic is a dancing soul. It has realized that inner law, it has fathomed that mystery for which souls long and in the joy of that mystery the whole life of the mystic becomes a mystery. You may see the mystic 20

tioned himself as a counterpoint to Modi by trying to craft a secular image. He surprised his party by donning a skull cap on Id and inviting controversial comparisons with Modi. Apparently, the Gujarat chief minister took umbrage and actually joined issue with Chouhan for wearing a skull cap to earn brownie points with the Muslim community. The MP chief minister has also revived plans to set up a Urdu University in Bhopal. He recently allotted six acres of prime land near the airport for the project at an honorary price of Re. 1 per acre. According to Chouhan’s aides, there are around 40 assembly segments in which Muslims can influence election results. With Modi on the ascendant, the chief minister is understandably worried about a Muslim veto against the BJP despite his personal efforts to woo the minorities. Chouhan has another reason to be worried. For the first time in ten years, the Congress seems to have a cohesive campaign going with Jyotiraditya Scindia as a sort-of CM-inwaiting. It’s ironic that there seems to be more enthusiasm for the local elections in the Congress than in the BJP whose workers have tuned off from the assembly to focus on the Lok Sabha polls with Modi as their icon.

Congress to tie up with BSP

N

ARENDRA MODI’S rise seems to have spooked the Congress into revising its goit-alone strategy for 2014. According to a wellplaced source, talks are on for an understanding or a “friendly match” with Mayawati’s BSP for the forthcoming assembly polls in Rajasthan. The source said the two parties are close to striking a deal. If it happens, it could be a precursor for an understanding in UP in the 2014 general elections which could dramatically alter the political landscape in the state. UP could decide who will form the next government, the BJP or the Congress. Interestingly, the discussions are on despite Rahul Gandhi’s deep distrust of the BSP. Sonia Gandhi, on the other hand, enjoys a good equation with Mayawati. With the threat from Modi growing, the Sonia line seems to be prevailing in the Congress.

FIXERS MADE A MOCKERY OF INDIAN CRICKET GENTLEMAN’S game of cricket poses lots of problem in the Indian subcontinent. Pakistan payers played a pivotal role in fixing matches and some of them landed in jail as well. The fever spread to India also and the IPL matches were the fixing platform for officials, players, umpires and others watching matches live or through television. BCCI could not control fixing fiasco. Fixing takes different modes in IPL matches as spot fixing, match fixing, toss fixing, weather fixing etc. Even officials were fixing matches against their own teams shows how the game has become corrupt in India. That is why Champions Trophy matches between big teams did not evince any in-

Was Nehru secular? THE answer is no. In fact, India was not secular from 1947-1975. It was also not socialist. We became secular and socialist only during the Emergency when those words were put in the Constitution after stifling the opposition and throwing them into jail. The truth that Nehru was not secular is also borne out by the fact that more than 50,000 Muslims were killed in the police action in Hyderabad in 1948. The Sunderlal report till today has not been released. Now that we are secular only ‘small’ incidents like Muzzafarnagar happen. — T.R. Ramaswami, Kandivli

terest even though the matches are played in India. The combination of Gurnath Meiyappan, Vindoo Dara Singh and umpire Asad Rauf was deadly and made mockery of Indian cricket but still escaped without any punishment. Now everything has come out in black and white and there is no hiding for these players and officials. Players like Sreesanth sell their teams as well as Team India for petty money and no one is there to call a spade a spade. During 2011 World Cup in India, three to four Indian players were involved in match fixing but escaped without even an enquiry. It is happening only in India and we feel happy about making money and win and lose some matches.

LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES

Steps for solving word problems – Make assumptions, using two variables (say p and q). From the given information, frame two equations in terms of two variables. Solve the equations by any convenient method and find the values of variables.

Equations in two variables with degree one are known as linear equations in two variables. General form of linear equation in two variables is aχ + by = c, where a, b, c are real numbers and a ≠ 0, b ≠ 0. When we consider the system of two linear equations in two variables, such equations are called Simultaneous equations. Methods of solving linear equations in two variables:

Method of elimination by equating the coefficients Method of elimination by substitution

Steps for Method of elimination by equating the coefficients:

First make the coefficients of any one variable in both the equations numerically equal by multiplying with suitable constants. Eliminate one variable either by adding or subtracting the two equations. Solve and get the value of one variable. Substitute this value in any one of the equations. Find the value of the other variable. The values of two variables are the solution of the given equations.

The solution of the given equations is a = 5, b = -4. Steps for Method of elimination by substitution:

Find the value of one variable in terms of the other from any one of the equations. Substitute this value of the variable in other equation to get an equation in one variable. It’s been a busy month for youngsters across the city who have turned to social activism to better the society and bring about a positive change. Here’s a look at some of the impressive campaigns and activities conducted by them in the city

GANESH VATAP

The Rotaract Club of K.C. College organised ‘Ganesh Vatap’ recently. This project was executed at Elphinstone Road, Mumbai on September 18. The objective was to distribute essentials like water, food packets, etc. to Ganesh devotees who were on the streets for Ganesh visarjan. The total donations that they received were around 200 kg of sugar, 15 boxes of biscuits, boxes of chocolates and 18 kg of pulao. All of this was distributed to the ganesh devotees by the volunteers. On September 19, they even organised a cleanup drive at Shivaji Park and Girgaum Chowpatty and helped cleaning the beach. Eight bags full of plastic and other garbage were collected. The Rotaract Club of H.R. College too organised a beach clean-up drive on September 19 at the Juhu beach. Around 100 club members got together to clear the beach of all the remains after the visarjan.

ACTION 2013: YOUTH IN ACTION

A social awareness programme was conducted by the Department of Sociology, S.K. Somaiya College on Saturday, September 20. The activity carried out by the students added impetus and showcased the students’ preliminary research work on socially relevant issues within the rural and urban areas such as farmer suicides, child trafficking, child labour, and changing trends in work behaviour within the private and the public sector. The purpose of the programme was to build awareness about sensitive issues affecting our society thus giving students a chance to get a practical experience and insight into social issues beyond the confines of the

classroom. Eminent speakers like ACP Vasant Dhoble addressed the issue of Child Trafficking in Mumbai followed by presentations and research through power point and short films on the issue. The programme aimed not only at connecting with different agencies and communities in dealing with the various social issues, but also to understand the scope of the subject of sociology through this endeavour.

Your Fitness’ was organised on September 17 in Bandra West by Supriya Datte, a fitness trainer who showed fun and innovative ways to remain fit. The trainer taught various exercises using the inflatable swiss ball, hula hoop, skipping rope, kettle bells and dumbbells. The event went on for an hour and was attended by fitness enthusiasts of varied ages. All their doubts and queries were answered by Datte and she also spoke about how fitness is not a temporary plan but a lifelong lifestyle choice.

In order to gather support and spread the word, ‘Saafasutra’ is conducting an event called ‘I Pledge’ which will be carried out throughout the two-week campaign. The team is going around the city’s hot-spots and crowded areas with a large map of Mumbai. Each individual is approached and educated about the difference that one good citizen can make. Placing their vows on the map, citizens pledge to keep Mumbai clean. Then, going the Gandhi way, Team Saafasutra is handing out badges to Mumbaikars depending on their behaviour. Those who are caught littering mindlessly and unabashedly receive the No.1 Litterer badge. The badge is given with a smile and indirectly gets the message across, inculcating a sense of responsibility and ensuring that they will henceforth think twice before littering. On the other hand, responsible citizens who use the bin or carry their trash around until they find one are applauded and encouraged by being bestowed with the ‘Saafasutra Citizen badge’. The team has also collaborated with Daman Ganga Mills Board Pvt. Ltd., a Vapi-based com-

pany that creates innovative products by recycling Tetra Pack cartons of milk and juices. They hand out beautiful recycled paper bags to such responsible citizens as a token of appreciation. ‘Saafasutra’ has also come up with a simple idea of handing out paper bags to people. The team hands out paper bags in Mumbai’s local trains and prominent stations, urging people not to litter and carry their trash around until they find a bin. And it doesn’t end here; ‘Saafasutra’ is also creating a petition by which they will appeal to the BMC to install more dustbins in specific areas. Through a Facebook activity called Kachra Kaha Hai?, Saafasutra urges citizens to inform them about places that are victims of mindless littering and the gathered information will be used in the petition. They will also personally go and make sure that the ‘kachra’ is cleaned and people, educated. Also, they have collaborated with I Dream Studio’s initiative called ‘Bol Public Bol’ which gathers public opinion. They have released a webisode which individually introduces one to the Saafasautra team and visually portrays the work that they do. Team Saafasutra took their campaign further by helping BMC to clean Girgaum Chowpatty. After the final immersion of

Ganpati idols, they cleared the litter strewn around. Such public platforms are the perfect place to make people aware and instill a sense of responsibility in them. Seeing the five girls do their bit, many bystanders were moved and they too joined them in cleaning the beach. “Festivals are great to enjoy and celebrate. It’s a fun thing where people come together and celebrate and share love. But we personally feel that our festivals don’t require us to litter around. Apart from being religiously inclined, let’s first be inclined towards a cleaner Mumbai”, said Rukaiya Lokhandwala, another member of Saafasutra. “We don’t end with the end of Visarjan, we plan to take this further. With the support of our families and college teachers we still have a lot to do. To begin with, our first mission is to forward the petition of getting more dustbins installed in the city, which is in the process”, says Vidhi Shah, another Saafasutra member. “We don’t want this to end, we want Saafasutra to be a religion that people follow and adopt”, quotes Jamila Bootwala.

IBM helps students prepare for future IIT Madras, Karunya University, Shiv Nadar University and IISER Bhopal use IBM Smarter Computing technology to elevate students’ experience

I

BM recently announced that leading universities across India are using IBM’s technologies to improve the quality of education process, introduce new curricula and prepare their students for jobs in the future. IBM has played a pivotal role in providing innovative technology solutions to the Indian education sector. Zinnov, a leading advisory firm, recently recognised IBM India as the leader amongst MNC (multinational) Technology Centers that have contributed significantly to the development of the University Ecosystem in India, for the third consecutive year. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Bhopal, Karunya University – Coimbatore, and the Shiv Nadar University (SNU) have selected IBM High Performance Computing (HPC) solutions, IBM System x iDataPlex servers, IBM PureSystems, IBM Power servers and storage solutions, virtualisation equipment and software to aid high end research, refine processes and elevate the IT infrastructure in the universities. The education sector in India is at the brink of IT enabled transformation. IBM Research is also working on technologies for intelligent, interactive content, learning content management and delivery, as well as personalised education, which, once mature can plug gaps that result from challenges in reach and scale, engaging content and lack of personalisation.

Towards a knowledge-based economy Supercomputing can be used for everything from weather forecasting to searching for a cancer cure. With data starting to flow, we are quickly approaching the exascale (a computer, capable of a quintillion – or 10 to the power of 18 – floating point operations per second) barrier. However, today an exascale computer would require approximately 100 MW power - an equivalent to that used by more than 100 000 homes in India, In order to reap the economic and scientific benefits from the super computing, capabilities that offer highest computing capacity per watt, become instrumental. In that space IBM’s Smarter Computing approach to IT becomes increasingly relevant. Advancing scientific industrial and life sciences research, the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Bhopal (IISER Bhopal) and Shiv Nadar University all turned to HPC (High Performance Computing), implementing the country’s largest supercomputing clusters within the education sector. These three universities are playing an important role in shaping India’s national research agenda. “In high-energy physics and bio-medical research, for example, simulation has become an integral part of science alongside theory and experimentation. Trial run for years, generating enormous volumes of data to process, and complex

modeling that integrates mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology with advanced, high performance computing and engineering”, says Prof. Sunil Kumar, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. IBM is also announcing that Karunya University, one of India’s top engineering universities has selected IBM PureSystems solutions to improve online student services by more effectively processing applications, such as handling online enrolment, exam scheduling, virtual campus management, etc. Getting ready for new curricula IBM also offers a wide range of products and solutions that enhances the curriculum of the educational institutes ranging from teaching computer science, information technology, and business and marketing courses. It enables students to develop competitive skills on the latest industry-standard software, systems, and tools. IBM also collaborates with Business Schools across India to help and enable business managers of tomorrow, address the need for skills in Big Data and Analytics. So far, over 10 institutions in India, like Sharda University and Galgotias University, have setup an IBM Business Analytics Lab, where participants are offered a two year full time MBA in Business Analytics in association with IBM. IBM India also runs ‘Project Praviin’, aimed at bridging the gap between what is taught and real life situations.

A nail-bitting Game! Starring: Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey Genre: Fantasy Drama Rating: *** Running time: NA (TV Series)

The good guys don’t always win. Sometimes the bad guys get what they want. Take nothing for granted. There is just one rule; and that is to expect the unexpected. You must learn to let go of a character you deeply loved, and at the same time learn to develop a liking for one that you resented. Life is unfair at times, and nothing says it better than the hit TV series ‘Game Of Thrones’. This fictional series revolves around several kingdoms, bloodlines and their struggle for power. However, this is woven together with everything else you would like to see in a series. ‘Game Of Thrones’ is packed with action, love, betrayal, violence, sex, magic, fantasy, humour and a bril-

Few people claim that the series is a hit because of the violence and sex, however the biggest reason millions of viewers just can’t get enough of the show is because of the nail biting plot; which is so complex and unpredictable that after a point most people refuse to wait for the next season and read the books. The writer of the show George RR Shubhang Bhattacharya Martin has often been criticised for his BMM, Jai Hind College sadistic pleasure of making people fall in love with a character and then killing him off, but that is what makes this series all the more interesting. Death comes knocking at your door irrespective of whether you’re an evil wizard or an innocent child. Nothing is ever taken for granted when you play the Game Of Thrones.

SITCOM REVIEW

Being petite, I try to adopt a very sensible approach to dressing. I swear by high street fashion brands. I love teaming up loose tops with neutral and black tights. I also like to colour block particularly blue with pink or prints with coloured pants. I love skater dresses and plain tone dresses which I can accessorise well. My new fixations are tribal prints, blacks and whites and anything with net or lace. I love accessorising with funky cuffs, statement necklaces and rings or colourful shoes. I follow the trend and experiment with different colours. My current favourites are lime green and mint green and I’ll pick up tops or pants in that tone. My favourite brands are CUFF Zara, Forever 21 Forever 21, Rs.600 River Island, Bershka, Stradivarius, and Michael Kors. FLIP FLOPS Kink, Bandra Rs.300

Blaupunkt all-in-one car subwoofer

Chandragupta Amritkar

Blaupunkt India has just launched another product for in-car entertainment. The GTb 8A promises to deliver the bass you’ve been missing as its 8” spun-paper woofer pumps out the low-end thump. Commonly, it takes a sub, an enclosure and an amplifier to produce bass and finding the right combination of these three elements can be tricky. The GTb 8A eliminates this hassle as Blaupunkt has designed the enclosure to house the sub and the built-in 75-watt RMS amplifier together. This is especially useful in smaller vehicles, where there’s no room to mount a separate amp, or in any vehicle where you need every bit of cargo space. Less than 11” deep, this compact sub will fit in some pretty tight places. With both speaker level and line-level inputs accepted, the GTb 8A can be connected to any type of car radio and can be fitted into all Indian entry levels hatchback, including factory-fitted models and retails at Rs. 9,990 WATCH Michael Kors Rs.14500

The Bell Jar (Sylvia Plath)

Seldom do you stumble upon a book that reflects your thoughts and emotions like a mirror, and leaves you with a feeling of belonging long after it has been shut and kept on a shelf. Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar is a semi-autobiography that deals with a young girl’s dilemmas of surviving the maddening city of New York with a curious mind, relentlessly seeking freedom of expression and accomplishing a meaningful objective. Not only was Plath suffering from clinical depression, she committed suicide a month after publishing this book, by inserting her head into an oven. With obvious influences and personal experiences that demonstrate her psychological struggle between her beliefs and contrasting societal norms, The Bell Jar proves to be a dark, insane (literally) and honest piece of literature that explores madness within the mundane. One must face the repressed sentiments that echo within Sylvia’s jar of passion and pain.

“Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world”

I

Shraddha Ashok Singh from the Public Relations field talks about the challenges and the advantages of her career.

did my schooling from Convent of Jesus and Mary, Fort. After that I took up Arts and then graduated in BMM from Kishinchand Chellaram College of Arts, Commerce and Science. Doing BMM was my ambition. While doing BMM I realised Public Relation is a different and interesting job. It is a combination of hard work and smart work. Public Relation is the field where little money is involved with larger outcome. It is the field where more than creativity you learn how to develop and maintain relationships with journalists and clients. Public Relation is a voice for the clients. It is only through PR that people can reach to the masses. In today’s world PR is playing a crucial role and is tremendously growing. From small brands to big brands, all are interested in PR. With such a fast growing industry, PR has a lot of scope in the future. This is why I decided to choose PR as my career. Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Similarly education has been very helpful to me in all parts of my life. It has taught me to be competitive and to face all the problems with confidence and positivity. Education has helped me to understand the difference between right and wrong in all facets of life. It has built confidence, determination, optimism and the ability to work in a team, in me. The best time in college was when we were told to do a compulsory training for a period of one month. I had joined a PR and advertising

firm Paramin Advertising and Media Associates. It was fun working there. A good learning experience with the government clients! With almost five to six interns including me learning PR and attending meetings were a great feeling, with lots of fun and <<Shraddha we were competing with each Ashok Singh other to be the best. My second internship was with one of the prestigious companies Genesis Burson and Marsteller. Genesis was the only place where I got ragged for the first and the last time. I remember the first time we had a Friday meeting and I was told to stand up on the chair in front of the entire office and introduce myself to them. It was shocking to see such things in the office. But truly working there was exciting with cheerful people around, everyday new challenges, deadlines, and events. Well! Thanks to Genesis, I could meet my favorite actor Sharukh Khan. Every time I had difficulties during work or about anything, there were people to support me and help me. I am lucky to have worked with the best of the people in Genesis and Paramin. My mentors were the best; they taught me all the minor and major details of PR. I am currently working with You Me & We Media Services. After training for a few months and completing my graduation it’s been great

to actually work and put those experiences and learning into a positive outcome. I am currently doing PR in fashion and lifestyle streams. Altogether, a completely different learning experience! As a fresher one can earn anything from Rs.10,000 to 15,000. But again it depends from company to company. Some prefer to give even more than that depending on the caliber of the person. It depends on the person, how fast and how well he works in any organisation. If a person has a good caliber and grasping

power he can become a professional in a span of two years. In the PR industry a good experience of two years can help you to set up your own firm. As an established professional one can actually earn a handsome amount of money. You can also be the boss of your own company by starting a new venture as it will not be difficult to establish a new startup for an experienced person. PR has lots of advantages and disadvantages. As a PR professional it is very important to build up a relationship and manage your

« PEER SPEAK

company’s and your client’s reputation. PR helps to build a brand’s image with its public. PR is very competitive. As said earlier, from small to big brands, all companies need PR. So it is a very effective and a great way to start your career in the media. The PR industry will definitely grow in the near future. The major difficulty in this field is to deliver the correct messages to the audience. PR people are the mediators between media and the client and so it is very important to see that the messages sent to the media are correct. So the communication has to be correct and clear to avoid any kind of misunderstanding. It sometimes becomes difficult to meet the client’s and media’s requirement at the same time. In my present job, I am doing more of media relations. PR is a vast field. PR is important in today’s world. People who want to make a career in Public Relations must learn to maintain good relationships. PR is not about just exposing the client but it is about a positive exposure that we are supposed to deliver for our client. So people planning to come in PR should learn to work hard and smart, have patience and get ready for lots of excitement.

If you have noticed that his marks have dropped suddenly, then it is a cause for concern. It is critical that you have them assessed by a professional. If a kid’s grades go from an ‘A’ to a ‘D’, that usually doesn’t happen in isolation. There will be other distress signals also. You might notice that your child has stopped participating in sports and activities that he used to love, or that he’s

- As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

Dyslexia is more common than you think Ms. Surabhi Verma, Director of Sparsh for Children, talks about how dyslexia does not make children stupid or lazy and how we can focus on helping a child to grow, rather than frustrating him or her for having a learning disability.

D

yslexia is not a disease. It is a neurological disorder, often hereditary and a condition that you are born with. People with dyslexia are not stupid or lazy. Most have average or above-average intelligence, and they work very hard to overcome their learning problems. Dyslexia interferes with the acquisition and processing of language. There are differences in how people think. Non-dyslexics have verbal thoughts, which are thinking in

words and has a linear process that occurs with a speed of about 150 words per minute. Dyslexics have non-verbal thoughts, which are thinking in pictures, where the picture grows as the thought process adds more concepts. Therefore, it’s much faster, possibly thousands of times faster. Often there is a negative feeling about having dyslexia because we concentrate on the disadvantages. Why not turn the situation around and harvest the positive aspects of having dyslexia? This would prevent a lot of frustration to the child and his surroundings. The main difficulty that the child faces is in reading, writing, spelling, handwriting and sometimes in arithmetic. Although dyslexia exists for life, children with dyslexia frequently respond successfully to timely and appropriate intervention. As a parent, it is important to take any label with a grain of salt. Parents should not be so enamored with the idea of a child who has high intelligence that they fail to notice their learning difficulties. Also, parents should not be so heartbroken by the diagno-

sis of a ‘learning disability’ that they fail to see the strengths of the child. If we ask a class or school teacher, each would give a list of at least 10-15 children who are not able to cope up with their peers in a class of 35-40 children. The major difficulties which these children face are: concentrating in class, sitting for long durations completing their work, not being able to follow instructions, having a problem taking notes, spelling errors, unable to understand lessons being taught, unable to understand the rules of grammar while writing or answering questions, or emotional breakdowns. If asked to get a formal assessment for these 15 children, 7-10 would be diagnosed with learning difficulty/dyslexia. Why are children with Dyslexia frustrated? Except for the child, no one knows exactly how hard a child with dyslexia is trying. The frustration of children with dyslexia often centers on their inability to meet expectations. Their parents and teachers see a bright, enthusiastic child who is not learning to read and write. Their parents hear, “He’s

« MENTOR’S DESK

such a bright child; if only he would try harder.” Ironically, the pain of failing to meet the parents’ and teachers’ expectations is multiplied by the child’s inability to achieve their goals. Their self-esteem suffers and they may become <<Ms. Surabhi loners or ‘class clowns’ or Verma behave in other ways designed to hide their learning difficulty or try to cope with academic insufficiency. They grow up believing that it is ‘terrible’ to make a mistake. This is extremely frustrating to them, as it makes them feel chronically inadequate. Instead of labelling children as failures or spoiled or sheer lazy, we as parents and teachers should try to assess their strengths and change the way in which we work with children. The following are a few ways in which a teacher can help a child in the classroom: Give short and individual instructions Help the child understand phonetic sounds which will help them to

form words Praise the child for little achievements to boost self esteem Teach students to use logic rather than rote memory Present material in small units and sequentially Provide legitimate outlets for extra energy Use multi-sensory teaching methods and aids A few years ago, it was up to a child with dyslexia to manage on their own as there was little awareness and hence no help. Children were expected to find their own strategies to overcome their difficulties or be back benchers in class. Thus for many parents and children, it was a distant possibility of completing their education with good grades and fulfilling a professional dream. But now with growing awareness, more and more children are being diagnosed with dyslexia and more tools are simultaneously being developed to help them. As children with dyslexia can excel in normal life, the onus is on educators to catch the difficulties early and provide them with the required help and aids to make their dream a reality.

Making Math Fun In a country obsessed with making its future generation doctors and engineers, mathematics is considered the path to scoring perfect percentages and the key to a bright future. However, most students shun the subject and consider it their least favorite as it requires practical application of the brain as opposed to the rote learning propagated by the Indian education system. Divesh Bathija, talks to Srishti Jain about his new wave of teaching, challenging the system and its methods, and dedicating his life to making Math ‘child’s play’. Tell us about your childhood. Was mathematics fun for you? Being raised by a single parent from a very early age, the one thing always on my mind was supporting my family. I did not know how to reach there however, especially with a speech disability where people hardly understood what I said. Determined to start my own business, I started at the age of 12. While everyone was busy playing, I saw profit and losses, which was when I saw math being applied in everyday life. That’s when I developed a further interest in the subject. While I saw all my friends struggling with the subject, I kept wondering how math could be so difficult and I could see the real life application of the subject, while my friends lacked that experience.

T

How did this idea of giving Math for students a twist and making it enjoyable strike you? During a pilot project, we identified that only a <<Divesh teacher can make Bathija a subject easy or tough for a student. One student did not know integers well, so we decided to play a game and saw he could answer much better and gave correct answers throughout. This helped us to identify how games could make the subject interesting. Tell us about Dinasim and how you began this institute? I always wanted to start my compa-

ny with the name ‘Dinasim’. I also knew that I wanted to start this venture, but didn’t know which stream to focus on since I realised that a lot of students struggle to study. When I studied abroad I was impressed by the approach of students towards education. This made me realise that I wanted to help the education sector and make the lives of students’ fun by helping them realise that studying is not actually a burden. What are the various devices or teaching methods you use to make Math fun for kids? Dinasim seeks elements of popular sports such as cricket, football, basketball, darts, or even virtual games such as Angry Birds. We use only games and activities to teach Math and avoid using a book and pen. This helps children to feel the subject and see its practical application.

LEARNING CAN BE FUN!

E.g. When children are watching an IPL match/ any cricket match, which every Indian student is fond of, which can be used to calculate Average, run rate and they can keep a check of runrate after every over or so. In such a manner these kids become more interested towards the subject as they see how it helps them beyond books as well. E.g. Often when children go shopping, they see how many shops have discounts to offer. Each and every brand which offers a discount will always use percentage, like 40% or 50% instead of 500/- off as the percentage helps to relate with every product on sale. E.g.: A show store has 30% off on all shoes; a NIKE show would cost 3000. While a Puma shoe would cost 2000. So the customer saves more if he buys a NIKE shoe than a Puma Shoe. E.g. While going out many a times, children wish to understand how far are they going, and often we using terms like 30 mins or 50 mins etc. They fail to understand in terms of KMs. So when they are travelling with their parents, they can record all speed levels, time taken to reach their destination, which will help them identify the actual distance they have covered.

As a young entrepreneur what is your view about the pressure the Indian education system puts on kids? Does it truly help them to grow and learn? The system has lost its meaning and is just a rat race for marks. The current system puts tremendous pressure on students, where they value marks over gaining knowledge and understanding concepts. Admissions are also based purely on marks and not on passion and knowledge of the subject.

gram for two months before they conduct any workshops. This training includes real exposure to the subject.

How do you train your teachers and faculty? We have an intensive training pro-

What is the process of enrolling in the institute and the age group eligible?

Students from Class 5 to 10 can enroll. They need to visit our website and email their details on info@dinasim.com. We then contact them and schedule an initial consultation with the children and their parents. Why do you think students dislike Math and consider it a burden? Math has always been misunderstood by kids and parents. For students, Math is meant mostly to score marks while parents want their children to be very good in it because it is useful through life. What they fail to tell students is where math is useful. Students don’t understand the application of the subject and this makes them disinterested. What changes need to be introduced in the Indian Education system? Valuing knowledge over marks is one of the major changes needed. Exams also need to be less over rated and students should relate to the subjects they wish to study or excel in. How do you plan to change the perception of Math in the minds of kids today? Teaching Math with no books and writing instruments is one of the best ways to make children realise that this is not a serious subject. What would you like to say to our readers? It’s Jazz, by the way!

Noel Athayde, a company member in The Danceworx Performing Arts Academy that was founded by the famous Ashley Lobo, tells Naressa Coutinho more about all that’s jazz.

T

hink Jazz; think flapper; think suave; think Chicago (2002). A top hat and cane made Charlie Chaplin a popular figure, but today one associates these props with the second prodigy i.e. Jazz Dancing. Five years with this dance form, Noel Athayde raises concerns over jazz dancing being alien to the Indian soil while it receives much appraise world over. This gap makes the jazz dance form a prospective career option for performers and teachers. “Jazz was derived from ballet,” he says, “The only difference between the two dances is that everything in ballet is turned out and everything in jazz is parallel. Thus it is like the foundation and a basic form. Jazz is very popular in western countries. In India, however, jazz is relatively new; people still have to understand the importance of being a trained dancer because when they go overseas the differences are apparent in terms of quality and technique. So dancers like me are making people aware of this form of dance. Jazz is like learning a classical dance form in India. Moreover, after training as a jazz dancer, other forms just become so much easier to pick up”. Noel started off as a dancer at the age of 19 and says that in comparison to his international counterparts who take up dancing as early as three and five years, he feels he had a late start. However, it is never too late for anything. Moreover, jazz as a dance form in India has picked up pace only recently. Like ballet, noel says that even Jazz is considered as a base form before one gets on a professional footing with any genre of dance. Jazz is that one form that helped him as a dancer and that strengthens you as a dancer. If one has to look at it from a career perspective, it’s imperative to understand what it takes to learn the art and then to be able to teach it to others. How long would one have to train as a dancer? “There is no particular duration to learning jazz. Dance is not a destination; it is a process”, says Noel who started learning jazz through a set syllabus in The Danceworx. “Everybody

is different, with different body structures,” he says “and so it depends on each individual; on how much they observe, invest and apply”. As far as investment goes, a dancer would only be required to invest in training. After one has acquired sufficient training of about a year and is confident of the technical bits that are essential when training another person he can start off with a decent income. The earnings from this field would depend mainly on experience, popularity and demand in the industry. If you can prove yourself as a dancer, you can start teaching at the dance school that you trained in. Besides this you will also find opportunities to grow as a choreographer. A jazz performer can also look to opportunities in the entertainment industry like musicals, theatre, commercials and even in the film industry. “It’s widely popular in metro

Since there is a lack of trained dancers, when it comes to a jazz dancer there is a difference in quality immediately. So yes, there will be a demand for anything and everything that is not cliché Bollywood. And today, shows in India are really broadening the horizon for jazz performers. It’s amazing to watch the growth, so international dance is coming into the country and that increases the demand of trained

dancers,” ascertains Noel. Lucky for ballet and jazz dancers, the arena is clear of many competitors and thus it is only slowly gaining momentum in India. One reason for these not being popular with Indian male dancers in particular is its immaculate movements that border of slender, feminine lines. Thus while hippop and other styles have been readily absorbed the fate of such dances remain a blur. There is so much to learning from our international counterparts on popular dance reality TV shows in terms of shunning these inhibitions. You will find that there is so much that needs to be tapped into automatically broadening one’s career prospects as a dancer. Citing the same problem, Noel says that it is often difficult to find a good jazz mentor in our country. As an offbeat career, aspirants should aim at keeping it as a part-time career option until it acquires due popularity amongst the masses. On an international stage, it could prove to be challenging but if one can prove to be a good dancer, the opportunities are plenty. Dance shows often allow dancers to showcase their talent and with contemporary dance forms gaining momentum, fusion performances too come as a more acceptable style. Thus, a dancer must explore various genres and work at training to be the best, and simultaneously assimilating other forms into the mainstream. Noel urges aspiring jazz dancers to focus more on training and says, “Hard work, determination and proper training are essential for every successful Jazz dancer.”

What do you think of the US spying on billions of Indian files online? Do you consider it an invasion of your privacy?

his is the biggest question faced by us today. After the Delhi rape case, there has been a rise in rape cases committed by minors. This is just because the minors know the loop holes of our constitution; they know that they will not be sentenced according to their crime but according to their age. A 17-year-old kid exerts the same pain and damage that a 35-year-old man can exert in case of rape and yet he is not convicted as a 35-year-old is. Rape committed by a juvenile or an adult affects the women in the same way, she is stoned for life, her happiness is destroyed forever and there is no chance that the darkness of such days will go with the light of a new day. Isn’t this a matter of urgent importance, doesn’t this instill fear in you that your kid can be a rapist or your girl can be raped by a ‘kid’ who will not be given the appropriate punishment. How can we defeat this? Can just walking on the streets clear such crimes? No it can’t. We can just raise a finger on the parents of such kids saying that they did not teach them manners and respect but are we right in saying so? A person in general is also affected by this world, the world which has grown in technologies and fallen in morals. Today every android user be even a 12-year-old kid has easy access to porn sites for free and without any age restrictions. A kid watches porn; doesn’t this create havoc in your mind? Here you can’t blame the parent as they can’t keep a 24/7 track on their kids so who to blame? Should technology be blamed who’s use and misuse is upon the user. It’s the user who is to be blamed. We all have been taught what is right and what is wrong, the problem comes in the choice.

The wrong is always so attractive than the right that we tend to forget the basic difference of wrong and right. And this choice keeps growing as a seed of evil thoughts in these kids’ minds and when it grows up, you see it as rape or such crimes. I don’t mean to educate people, there are better teachers than me, I mean to create awareness in society as it seems there are lesser observers in the society. We live in a society which enjoys

blaming more than correcting and this is sad. We call rapist criminals, but aren’t even we criminals of the society who can’t even stand up for justice for someone else who might be living in the nearby society or in your neighborhood or just opposite your door. Before I stop and you start thinking let me conclude by saying that if we say that a 17-year-old is immature then I would like to tell you that the writer of this article is also a 17-year-old.

Onion prices may come down in the next 10-15 days: Pawar N EW DELHI: Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Tuesday said onion prices are expected to fall sharply in the next 10-15 days, which may give relief to consumers. “I am absolutely confident that in the next 10-15 days, I will start getting brief from farmers that prices have fallen sharply,” Pawar told PTI on the sidelines of an event. Onion prices both in the wholesale and retail markets have remained at an unaffordable level since July due to seasonal shortages. Onions continue to available at Rs 6070 per kg in most retail markets despite a falling trend in some wholesale markets. Pawar said the prices have shot up despite substantial increase in onion production to over 17 million tonnes (MT) in 2012-13 from 9.5 MT in 2005. However, the falling trend in onion prices will begin from month-end on improved supplies, he said. “Arrival in some states has started. EW DELHI: The government will push for passage of a long-pending bill to provide statutory status to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) in the winter session of Parliament. “We will bring the National Identification Authority of India Bill 2010 in Parliament during the forthcoming winter session for discussion and passage,” Planning Minister Rajeev Shukla told PTI. The UIDAI, which issues 12digit Aadhaar numbers to residents, currently operates through an executive order. The working of the UIDAI has come under scrutiny of the Supreme Court, which in an interim order yesterday, observed that Aadhaar can be issued only to Indian nationals and the identification number cannot be made mandatory for availing of benefits of the government’s subsidy schemes. The bill to provide the authority legal backing was approved by the Union Cabinet in September 2010 and introduced in the Rajya Sabha in December that year. It was sent for scrutiny to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance headed by former finance minister and BJP leader Yashwant Sinha. “Now the bill has been sent back to the Planning Commission by the Standing Committee with some amendments. We will soon take it to the Cabinet and try to push the draft for passage in the winter session,” Shukla said. The minister said the UIDAI has not made enrolment for Aadhaar number mandatory for residents and it was for the central departments, ministries and state governments to decide how to verify the identity of beneficiaries. “Aadhaar establishes the identity of a person and not the nationality. It also serves as proof of residence. Moreover, it is a voluntary facility and not mandatory,” he said.

T

he Indian stock market is likely to witness a correction after the RBI's monetary policy review disappointed expectations, Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BofA-ML) said in a report. The market will correct 6-8 % from current levels, according to the global financial services major. "The markets will be rangebound in the 18,500-20,500 range as weak economic and earnings growth caps the upside while hopes of rate cuts and policy measures protect the downside," BofA-ML said in the report dated September 23, reports PTI.

Stocks, which rallied sharply since Raghuram Rajan took over as Reserve Bank of India Governor on September 4, have fallen sharply since the central bank's policy review on September 20. The Sensex had surged 685 points to close at an almost three-year high of 20,646.64 on the eve of the RBI policy review. The index gained 9 % between Rajan's takeover and the policy review. The report noted that "as markets are already close to our upper limit of the 'range' we believe the risk reward is not favourable." According to BofA-ML, one key risk for the markets is that foreign institutional investor holdings, at about 21 %, are

close to all-time highs. "India thus remains vulnerable to any global emerging market sell-off in the near term," BofA-ML said. Moreover, sentiment towards the Indian markets has turned negative nd this could likely impact FII flows if things worsen in the coming months. Other factors that may affect the market trend include earnings recovery, the RBI's main focus on inflation, forthcoming elections, negative sentiment about India and high valuations. On earnings, the report said given the delay in macro recovery and demand destruction, BofA-ML does not expect a material pick-up in corporate earnings.

P

ADANG, INDONESIA: The drive to succeed was writ large on East Bengal players' faces as they scripted history of sorts after securing their maiden berth in the AFC Cup semi-finals, overcoming a spirited Semen Padang playing in front of a vociferous home crowd here. The historic Indian club, tucked around the wide open spaces of maidans in Kolkata, advanced on aggregate (2-1) after holding Semen Padang to a 1-1 draw in the the return leg quarterfinal at the Agus Salim Stadium. Playing in front of a packed home crowd, the Indonesian outfit started out aggressively and led at the half-time, thanks to a 23rd minute strike by Andrew Wilson. But East Bengal, who needed just a draw to make the last-four, made a smart move by bringing in Baljit Singh Sahni whose measured cross saw substitue James Moga time his spot jump to perfection as he headed home the equaliser in the 75th minute. For Joaquim Abranches and Abhijit Mondal, the success is all

home courtesy a Ryuji Sueoka strike. Having started the game, Sueoka could only last 43 minutes and it was the Japanese midefielder's replacement, Moga, who struck the all-important goal. Goan heavyweights Dempo had qualified for the AFC Cup semifinals in 2008. East Bengal's previous best show in the AFC Cup was in 2004 when Subhas Bhowmick guided the side to the quarter-finals. Padang were boosted by the return of Argentine playmaker Esteban Gabriel Vizcarra, who missed the last first leg due to a double booking, while the Indonesian outfit's backline too was reinforced in presence of Wahyu Wijiastanto. Needing at least a two-goal margin to make the semis, the more sweeter as they were Padang went into the attack also part of the Dempo squad straighway as Wilson's shot went that had played in the semi-finals over the bar. A silly error by East of the 2nd tier inter-continental Bengal goalkeeper Gurpreet club competition a few years ago. Singh, who shot it straight to WilDempo till now were the only In- son from a goalkick, was enough dian football club to have made for the home outfit to take an the last-four of the AFC Cup. East easy lead. The Liberian forward, lurking Bengal had won the first-leg at

upfront, made no mistake as he struck from 22 yards. After the changeover, the Indonesian outfit suffered their first setback when scorer Wilson picked up an injury to be replaced in the 48th minute. The Kolkata heavyweights tried their best to bring in an equaliser, with Moga making inroads as the Sudanese shot one straight to Padang goalkeeper Jandia Eka Putra. In the 65th minute, coach Marcos Falopa's tactical substitution Baljit, in place of Robert Lalthlamuana, paid off. Baljit made a fine attempt to penetrate the Padang box before he put it nicely across to Moga on the left and the former Pune FC forward did well to head it from the far post. Five minutes later, Baljit had a great chance to become the star of the day, but the Indian youngster miscued a shot right in front of the goalmouth. With about 10 minutes left to defend the score, Falopa strengthened his defense, bringing in Gurwinder Singh in place of Abranches as the red-and-gold brigade maintained their unbeaten record.

Indian eves enter semi-finals of Asia Cup hockey K

UALA LUMPUR: India defeated hosts Malaysia 2-0 to qualify for the semi-finals of the eighth women's Asia Cup hockey tournament here. Poonam Rani (39th) and Lily Chanu (46th) scored two second half goals at the Stadium Hoki Nasional to seal India's place in the last-four stage of the eightnation tournament. With six points in their kitty, the Indian eves finished their Pool A engagements on second position behind

China (nine points). India will now face Pool B toppers Korea in the first semi-final on Thursday, while China will take on Japan in the second lastfour match. India has earlier spanked Hong Kong China 13-0 in their tournament opener before going down to defending champions China by a solitary goal in their next game. Knowing well that only a win in the tournament will guarantee them a place in next year's World

Cup, the Indian eves started cautiously against Malaysia, who were backed by a vociferous home crowd. The Indians looked far from promising in the first half as the Rani Rampal-led forwardline failed to breach the Malaysian defence. Both the teams created a few chances but they failed to break the deadlock in the first half. After the change of ends, the Indians came out with more purpose and took the lead in the

39th minute through a field goal from Poonam Rani. Poonam's goal raised India's confidence and they went for relentless attacks, which resulted in doubling their lead soon. Lily Chanu made the scoreline 2-0 in favour of India in the 46th minute through another field strike. Thereafter, the Indians played sensibly and denied Malaysia any opening to make a comeback into the match.

Heats suffer second Rajasthan Royals have winning momentum, says Rahane AIPUR: Opener Ajinkya Radefeat in a row, lose Jhane is confident that Rajasthan Royals have the to Titans by 4 runs upperhand going into the Champions League Twenty20

MOHALI: Brisbane Heats threw their Champions League Twenty20 campaign in complete disarray after suffering a narrow four-run defeat against Titans, here. Chasing 124 to win the Australian side lost wickets in a heap after dismissal of skipper James Hopes, who hit 37, and now have two defeats in as many matches. Hopes in company of Daniel Christian (21) raised a 44-run stand for the fourth wicket to stabilise the innings as they had lost three early wickets. Once the two batsmen departed, Heats wilted under pressure. Left-hander Chris Sabburg raised their hopes with a quick-fire 19 off seven balls but his run out in the last over proved a last nail in the Heats' coffin. Fast bowler Marchant de Lange took three wickets for 13 runs in his four-over quota to be the most successful bowler for Titans while his pace colleague Rowan Richards took two for 20.

match against Highveld Lions here today. Rahane said Royals would look to capitalise on the momentum achieved during their victory over IPL champions Mumbai Indians, ahead of their Group A clash at the Sawai Man Singh stadium. "The focus is on building our game plan and strategy. I feel the momentum is with us," said Rahane, who had played an instrumental role in Royals' seven-wicket win over Mumbai in their tournament opener. The diminutive opener said his team was not concerned about the other matches of the group which were washed out in Ahmadabad last evening. "We are not looking at those matches because such things are not in our control. It had rained before the Mumbai Indi-

ans match here too but we won it," he said. Asked about the decision to send Shane Watson down the batting order during their match against Mumbai, Rahane said, "Such things are decided by the think tank - Paddy Upton and Rahul Dravid. It's not for the individuals but the cause of the team. We had chased big totals like against Chennai earlier with this strategy. We need flexibility in accord with the situation and team comes first." Rahane welcomed the threeday break prior to their next game. "It has been a good three-day break for us because T20 involves high intensity games. It's especially good for the pacers who have to work hard. The Lions are capable of throwing a good challenge because they have bowlers like Sohail Tanvir, Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Imran Tahir who are capable of making early inroads in the opposition line-up," he said.

here were seven runners in the S.A. Poonawalla Multi-Million race. The horse that attracted attention was Dynamo, but it could only place. The winner was Falcon which is owned by Mr. Jaydev M Mody and trained by M. Narredu for whom this win was a bright feather in his cap. There was a celebrating ambience on Sunday when the S.A. Poonawalla MultiMillion race was run. Another important race was Viloo C. Poonawalla Gold Trophy which was won by Mauna Kea, owned by the Shirke family. A lot of money came on Rajasamman and Santa Maria. One of the keenest finish was in the Mysore Race Club Trophy between Monza and Sharaarat which is trained by Dallas Todywalla. At the post, only a razor edge separated them. Sharaarat which won the race was ridden by A. Sandesh who is likely to be the Pune champion. One of the rank outsiders which won was Narendra Lagad-trained Rubens in the Eloin Plate. In 8-horse field, it was available at 20 to 1. There was huge betting on Ace Jet which became the on-money favourite. Casino Jack, owned by Mrs. Vandana Sharma and trained by Hosidar Baji won the Proteons Play at odds of 4 to 1. Katrak trained Romantic Beauty came second in the race. It has placed three times this season. A chupa rustom which revealed its potential was Dallas Todywalla trained Kaizer. Watch this horse. It is cut out apparently for distance. Another horse – Narendra Lagad’s Savage Garden also ran quite well in the 2400 Flaring Ace Plate. Poor Tara was made to run in 2400 metre class IV race. The horse which is now 7-yearold must be denoted and run

in class V. Emperor of France is betting down all his admirers. The name is very imposing but the horse is not. The winner in the Rao Saheb Kedari Gold Trophy was Ainra which is trained by M.K. Jadhav. The Emperor may win in Mumbai. There was lot of betting on Champakali and Cream of the Crop in the Division I of the Rambus Plate. The winner was however an unexpected horse. Its last run in Pune was very bad – it ended then 18th in the race. Trainer H.J. Antia had four horses in the Div II of Inglenork Gold Plate: Rocking, Midnight Wind, Armel and Winchester. They all belonged to different owners. Midnight Wind became the favourite in the race but it did not win. The winner was Rocking. Pandemonium broke out the mob because violent, smashed whatever they could by their hands. Conclusion of the mob: The jockey on the favourite pulled it and this enabled Antia’s another horse Rocking won. The club authorities called the police who finally had to resort to a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. To say the least, it was a disgusting behaviour. Later the vet found that Midnight Wind had profusely bled and they did not have a ghost of a chance to win. Whenever racegoers are dissatisfied with the way a race is run, they stand round the paddock and peacefully shout. For the authorities, this much action is enough to take action. To resort to vandalism is totally unwarranted.

Senor Bella which won the Jaidev Plate being led in by trainer Pesi Shroff (right) after the race. The horse is owned by Mr and Mrs. Vijay Mallya and Mr. M. Deboo.

Dancing Splendour which won the Inglenook Race being led in by trainer S.S. Shah.

Sharaarat, owned by Dr. T. Shankar and C.S. Wakalkar, being led in after winning the Mysore Race Club Trophy. At right is trainer Dallas Todywalla.

Runs to remember: Holy Bull, Scaremonche, Razenaa, Prince Arius, Capitano, Monet, Bombardier, Mauna Kea, Kaizer, Monza, Romantic Beauty.
