prominent personality like HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh was among the thousands of other voters who found their names missing from the voters list. According to conservative estimates, if even 50 per cent of the voters who were denied their chance, managed to cast their ballot, the overall voting percentage in Mumbai could well have increased from 52.66 per cent to about 56 per cent. As per the Election Commission of India's data, names of 50.32 lakh voters were deleted, out of which Mumbai alone accounted for 6.02 lakh names. State BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari yesterday argued that close on the heels of over 1 lakh voters names missing in Pune city, the picture is no different in Mumbai. He accused the electoral registration officers of being stubborn in their approach and messing up with the voter registration exercise. Bhandari announced that the BJP will move the Supreme

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Hussain Dalwai too argued that similar looking names are often randomly deleted despite the fact that technology is available to trace out similar looking names. Speaking to the ADC yesterday on condition of anonymity, sources in the ECI pointed out that they had

been informing the public through newspaper advertisements about the exercise to delete duplicate entries. Many people seem to have ignored the appeal and are now complaining at the last minute. Sources stated that the Booth Level Officers had made repeated visits to residences and if they found the residence locked and got no response from those living there, the names are deleted.

he early morning trends in voting percentage in Mumbai which was barely 7.23 per cent had raised anxiety levels across political parties. However, the late evening surge in voting saw the final voting percentage in Mumbai break the 23 year old record by posting an impressive 52.66 per cent. At the end of the third and final phase of polling yesterday the 48 Lok Sabha constituencies of Maharashtra polled 59.52 per cent as against 50.75 per cent in 2009 elections, a rise of 8.77 per cent. Belying the early morning poor voting percentage, at the end of the day both the 6 Lok Sabha constituencies of Mumbai and 4 Lok Sabha constituencies of Thane eased the tension especially in the BJP-Shiv Sena opposition camp. The polling percentage in the 6 Lok Sabha constituencies of Mumbai was as follows: Mumbai North (52 percent), Mumbai North-West (50 percent), Mumbai North-East (53 percent), Mumbai North-Central (52 percent), Mumbai SouthCentral (55 percent) and Mumbai South (54 percent). The polling percentage in the 4 Lok Sabha constituencies of Thane was as follows: Palghar ST (60 percent), Bhiwandi (43 percent), Kalyan (42 percent) and Thane (52 percent). In 2009 the voting percentage in the 6 Lok Sabha constituencies of Mumbai was as follows: Mumbai North (42.61 percent), Mumbai North-West (44.05 percent), Mumbai North-East (42.47 percent), Mumbai North-Central (39.52 percent), Mumbai South-Central (39.51 percent) and Mumbai South (40.37 percent). The polling percentage in the 4 Lok Sabha constituencies of Thane was as follows: Palghar ST (48.10 percent), Bhiwandi (39.40 percent), Kalyan (34.31 percent) and Thane (41.51 percent). The increase in voting percentage especially in Mumbai has meant that it will be a uphill task for the 6 sitting Congress-NCP MP's to retain

A 39-year-old female schoolteacher who was on poll duty collapsed and died of a heart attack in Thane on Thursday, election officials said. Vaishali Bhale, who taught at the New Bombay City School, was on duty at a polling booth in Vandana area. Around noon she felt uneasy and collapsed after suffering a heart attack, they said, adding Bhale died on the spot. Bhale, who was unmarried, had not been keeping well for the last two days. However, she decided to go on election duty, her father said.

The number is still undisclosed but looking at the various complaints, the huge number of voters who could certainly impact the election results have been deprived from casting their votes. pacify the furious voters. According to sources, the deletion was done mainly because the voters were currently not residing in the area in which they were originally registered. Against this backdrop speaking to reporters, state's Chief Election Officer Nitin Gadre said, “These are not missing names. The deletions were done six months ago as per the procedure following all legalities. The revised lists were given to all political parties with suitable publicity at local levels by district collectors and the new lists have been available on the state election commis-

sion website for the past six months. Among the names deleted are those of new and potential first-time voters in various constituencies as they are presently not residents in their respective areas of voting. The issue came to the fore after there were a large number of complaints of names missing from voters lists in places like Nagpur, Amravati and Pune, irking candidates of all major political parties who also protested or complained about it.The state BJP alleged that around 1,00,000 voters' names have been deleted from Pune and as many

new voters from other areas have been added to that constituency. A BJP delegation called on the election authorities and demanded fresh elections in Pune. Among those whose names are missing is Bollywood actor-producerdirector Amol Palekar, who lodged a missing name complaint with Pune police. Of the state's 11.76 crore population, the total current voter strength is around 8.06 crore, the rest being minors. However, it was not known how many names from these may have been deleted or diverted from their respective constituencies.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, APRIL 25, 2014

A number of voters were left upset and angry as their names were missing from the electoral list at R.V. Technical School, 18 Road, Khar. Around 100 people from the locality collected outside the office of Returning Officer Kade and protested the disappearance of their names from the list. Some of the protestors grew aggressive and the police were brought out to reign them in. “Voting is my right, everywhere there are advertisements to vote and now I am unable to due to this problem”, said young Kavita Singh at the crowd assembled outside the office of the Returning Officer. “Some of the names from my family are present in the list, while mine and my husband's name is missing”, screamed an agitated Sunita Rao. People were also angry at Kade, the Returning Officer for not coming out of his cabin and addressing their problems. Speaking to ADC, Returning Officer Kade said, “The electoral list is prepared and sent by the Election Commission. There are instances where people are registered at two places. In some cases the photographs were not present and we had to upload just the names of the people. There was no way of tracking these people. So the commission tried to get to the root of the problem, by contacting the society, the family members or the secretary of the society and after confirming that the person has been missing from the place for a long time we have taken this action. But now we have found out that there may be a family dispute or the people may have shifted out temporarily for some SRA projects or due to redevelopment. We are now rectifying the problem by handing over Form 6 which will have to be filled and handed over by June, so that their names will appear for the Vidhan Sabha elections”. But the people were not ready to accept any sort of explanation. They felt an urgent need to exercise their constitutional right. Some even went to the extent to say that the elections are rigged and that their names were purposely deleted to serve some ulterior motive.

Malabar Hill area: Good turnout despite hiccups! The Activity School poll booth situated on Navaroji Gamadia Road in the Malabar Hill area saw a host of celebrities come to vote, most prominent among them, RBI Governer

Raghuram Rajan who came to vote around noon. "Everyone should come out and vote, it's important", he said to the media. Theatre personality Dolly Thakore came to the poll booth soon after. "I'm happy to see so many young people at the poll booth. I talked to the authorities inside and they said a lot of them had turned up to vote, this is good", she said. Singer Vishal Dadlani also came to vote some time later. There were also many complaints about names of voters not being on the list. Said Amna Bham, a voter at the booth, "We've all come with our voter cards and ID proofs but they say our names are not on the updated list. Why should I let go of my right to vote? I even called the Zonal Officer but he is not responding", she said. A first time voter Gaurav Arora, 24, said "I have been

While the Election Commission has tried its best in the last few months by requesting voters to check their names and update the EC regarding any changes, voting day saw quite a lot of confusion regarding many names going missing from the voting lists at various booths across the city

Priya Dasan's excitement of casting her first vote was shortlived as her name was missing from the voters list. “I had submitted all documents and forms on time, still this happened. I was so excited. I was to cast my first vote but now it looks like I have to wait till the next elections, said a disappointed Priya, who is a resident of Kannamwar Nagar in Vikhroli. Khar: Voters left disappointed

Shrikant Sutar and his wife Shruti were seen running from one table to another at a polling centre in Vikhroli because their names were missing from the list. “We aren't new voters. We have been voting for years but now suddenly our names aren’t on the list. This is very upsetting because I want to vote. It is my right,” said Shruti. waiting here for one and a half hours. They said in the newspapers that even if you don't have a voter card you can vote if you are registered and have come with ID proof. But my name is not on the list despite registering when they came to our society. This way they are losing out on the youth vote”. Parveen Daruwalla, the registration desk volunteer for the Bai Ratanbai Framji Pande Girls' High School poll booth at Gilder Lane in Mumbadevi said, "The names of thousands of people have been removed from the updated list. Names of people who have died are still there, it's ironic". She also said that despite her voting slip having 'Ground Floor' as the location for voting at her poll booth, the booth had been set up on the first floor. Shyam Dhavan, 87, a voter at the Mahalaxmi Upper Primary Marathi School in the Malabar Hill area offers a fresh perspective. "I don't see what everyone is so hyper about. They should have registered earlier and checked the list when it was updated. When you are angry and shouting, your mind is dis-

tracted and you can't make a good decision", he said. Despite this, one cannot ignore the mismanagement. Says Mukherjee, 55, "It is pretty badly organised. We have asked at three different poll booth desks and they have directed us elsewhere". Said Shakuntala Jain, 65, a voter at the Gilder Lane Municipal School poll booth at Gilder Lane in Mumbadevi said, "They are making senior citizens run around from one poll booth to another. I have gone to three different ones and I'm finally here. The only reason I can do this is because my son has been taking me around on his scooter. If I didn't have him, they would have lost out on my vote".

Wadala: All not well! BMC School Sahakar Nagar in Wadala had a large group of agitated people, engaged in a heated discussion for not being able to cast their votes. Motilal Sagarmal Jain (79), said, “I have visited 11 booths but have not been able to cast my vote. They have a negative approach and lack the decency to deal with senior citizens”.

Another such person, Yaqub Khan (42), said, “I've lived here since childhood. If I don't get to vote today, I'll never vote again. We have been running around in circles for the past few hours”. Most of these people said that their entire family had been denied their voting rights for the same reason. Others felt that they had taken time out from their daily jobs to participate in the voting process in vain. Sayed Aftab Hussain, a carpenter, said, “I have given up on my daily wage for this. What's the point of voting if it has to be such a hassle? Over 50 per cent people here do not have their names in the list”. Mukesh Jain (49), despondently said, “They say we should try next time...” Vyomesh Panchmatia (33), said, “Everyone has cards as well as documentary proof. We went to reason with them but the police started pushing us with batons, even women and senior citizens. This is inhumane”. Panchmatia, along with some of the men outside, had registered a complaint requesting for reelection. However, the Election Returning Officer and Deputy Collector of the booth, Sonali Mule, explained, “There has been a lot of redevelopment of localities. A lot of people have shifted to alternative accommodations. The government sent them notices requesting them to inform the EC if they were voting from the same locality, but there were no responses. We had to delete the names according to the requests issued from the Election Commission of India”. Interestingly, several of these aggrieved voters ,went home to check the newspaper which said that in case their names are not on the list, the authorities should refer to the mother's list. They came back determined to cast their votes but the authorities said there was no such list. “There is no mother list. Only the updated list and they are saying that they will only consult the updated list”, said Motilal Jain.

on the voters list. “I have pain in my legs and can barely walk; despite all this I have come to vote. I have my voter's ID with me and I can't vote. There is no one to even bring me back later to vote”. Deepak Natesan, a resident of Iris Building in Cuffe Parade told the ADC, “Stand here and look at the number of people walking out without ink on their fingers! So many of our names are not on the voter's list! There is definitely foul play and it is deliberate. Many people's names from my building and many others are just not on the list! I changed my travel plans just so I could vote!”

Makhurd: List confusion here too

temporarily shifted, that too without cancelling the old registrations. This is why the problems are occurring”. Talking to the ADC, 85year-old Hasam Qureshi, a resident of Shivaji Nagar said, “For the past 50 years, I have been voting consistently and this is for the first time that I have been made to run from one polling booth to another, due to the lists confusion”. Another victim of the missing name from the voting list was 48-year-old Sayed Hafiz, who is a handicapped labourer residing in the slums near Govandi Abattoir. “I am being made to run from pillar to post for voting. This is absolute lethargic attitude of the government officials to maintain the lists of the voters”.

Two BJP corporators not on the list

While the Thane parliamentary constituency registered an overall voter turn out of 52 per cent, the vote count in the Mira-Bhayandar assembly segment crossed the 53 per cent mark (till 5 pm). Turnouts were 40.5 and 44.1 per cent for Thane in 2004 and 2009 respectively.Even as the elections passed off peacefully with no bogus voting cases and no major untoward incidents, the same old story of names being deleted from the electoral rolls was reported from Bhayandar (West). Age no barrier

At a time when several voters make lame excuses for not going to the polls to exercise their franchise, a bridegroom set a glowing example by chosing to vote before tying the knot on Thursday. A resident of Bhayandar (west), Mitesh Jagdish Shah (23), pushed back his wedding ritual in Borivali for a few hours, just

Eighty eight-year-old Vanita Salvi came to vote along with her grand-daughter. She was fatigued and had to rest because of the heat, but at the same time, she was happy to see the voter turnout. Presiding Officer Avinash Gole got the Congress workers to dismantle their pandal and vacate the place they were using as an office (see below) as it was located less than 100 feet away from the school which was a major polling centre for residents of Jeevan Bima Nagar, IC Colony, and housing societies along Devidas Lane.

Morning saw a fairly good turnout at the St Lawrence High School, with people crowding the help desk manned by Mrs. Godse and Mr. Pardesi. A number of people found that their names were not on the list and walked away disappointed at being unable to vote. 87-year-old Nalini Khalsikar, a resident of Jeevan Bima Nagar exercised her franchise quite early in the morning, having arrived there with the help of friendly neighbours.

The Congress pandal had to be pulled down and relocated.

Shobhita Bandal and Sanjana Rao had turned up hoping to get on to the voters' list, but will have to now ensure that the EC includes their names well before the next elections due in October this year. Zonal Officer Shailesh Gadbail was happy that the major part of the day, until 3.30 pm, had gone by peacefully, and voters were still queuing up.

Ponder awhile… “The unforgivable crime is soft hitting. Do not hit at all if it can be avoided; but never hit softly.” — Theodore Roosevelt

Modi wave: Does it exist? P

RIME Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's one-line comment on the ongoing elections to Parliament: There is no 'Modi wave'! The Congress leaders also keep saying that 'Modi wave' is a myth. They have, however, no explanation for the huge crowds at all BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's rallies. From day one of his poll campaign, Modi has been attracting lakhs of people at his rallies. It looks like the poll campaign by the BJP is a one-man's show. It is only Modi who has been holding rallies in almost all states and addressing crowds with the promise of good governance and development. The latest show by Narendra Modi was at Varanasi yesterday: if any proof of 'Modi wave' was needed, it was there – at Varanasi. Modi did not go to Varanasi to address a rally – he went there to file his nomination. It is estimated that about two lakh people were there to welcome him. Narendra Modi has been campaigning since nearly nine months. The opposition party leaders did not take much notice of him as he went about addressing rallies across the country. Modi was slowly gaining ground and attracting increasing attention. Some senior leaders of his party who were jealous said it was BJP and not Modi show. Political parties like the Congress, the SP and the JD(U) mounted attacks on him – some of which were personal. Surprisingly enough, they did not diminish his popularity. The 'small wave' he had started transformed itself into a 'big wave'. There is no denying the fact now there is a 'Modi wave'. Political pundits are saying that the 'Modi wave' may have an impact on elections in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh as well. Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh has given a rousing welcome to Modi. In Tamil Nadu, people appear to be fed up with the constant fights between the AIADMK's J. Jayalalithaa and DMK's M. Karunanidhi. On May 16, we will know how people have voted in Tamil Nadu.

T

HE Devyani Khobragade story does not leave us. There is this development of US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell resigning. Many, like The Asian Age (April 2) believe that it is not surprising. As it put it: “Indian and American officials were expecting a change of guard. The move signifies a possible desire by Washington to push the ‘refresh’ button in relations with India. At the practical level it is hard to see a renewal under a leader who presided over the decline. Unlike Mrs. Powell, a career diplomat, a political appointee might be better suited to revise ties at the operational level.” The paper said “the test of this will be how the US handles the Khobragade affair from now onwards.” But meanwhile another development has taken place which must be a cause for concern. According to The Hindustan Times (April 6) an American police officer, Manny Encarnacion was arrested at New Delhi airport on March 10 “when three live bullets were found in his baggage during screening”. According to official sources, in India “this is a violation of the Arms Act”. To the best of one’s knowledge this information over a month old first came to be published in Hindustan Times only on April 6. Why was the story suppressed by the Indian government? It became common knowledge only after the US daily New York Post published the report. According to the story in the Post, “India is getting revenge for Nannygate” — the reference being to the Khobragade arrest and the insult heaped on her. In a letter to the Secretary of State, John Kerry, New York’s Republican Congressman, one Chuck Schumer is supposed to have told a TV channel that he thinks “India’s behaviour is sort of juvenile”. Actually even American public was not in the know of the police officer’s arrest for 25 days. So far, it would seem, the State Department has played down the story. Asked if it could be seen as retribution for Khobragade’s arrest a State Department spokesperson is reported as saying: “We have said we want to get past some of the tensions that have been there over the past several months and move on. I just can’t speak to this specific case.” He better not. India has broken no law. On the contrary, the US police officer has. The US must be taught a lesson. No country, howsoever powerful can get away with insulting and humiliating India. The officer must be released only after all the charges against Devyani are withdrawn. But why, may one ask, was the story suppressed for over a month?

Wrong conception about media

MEANWHILE, the Aam Aadmi Party is losing friends in the media and rightly so. The point was made by The Times of India in a powerful editorial. It said: “The Aam Aadmi Party seems to believe that the definition of an independent media is one that fawns on it and frowns on all its rivals.” Referring to the party’s election manifesto which pushes “for all manner of curbs and restrictions on the media, thereby dealing a massive blow to basic freedom” the paper said that the AAP has two choices. “It can introspect on why so many have got disillusioned so fast or it can attribute motives”. At the moment, said the paper, “it has chosen the latter course, which is self-destructive.” The paper added: It would do better to

MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath look within. It will then realise that sweeping accusations about the media, business houses and political rivals without a semblance of evidence to back them cannot sustain its politics. Most people will soon see through the game... its fears of oligopolies are laughable in the new media world where dissemination of information and opinion cannot possibly be controlled by a few. Our advice would be: don’t shoot the messenger, pay attention to the message”.

‘Death sentence for rape aberrant’ A MUMBAI city sessions court’s judgement on the Shakti Mills gang rape has roused the attention of the media. The court had applied for the first time Section 376(e) of the law against rape. By that provision ‘repeat’ offenders in rape invite either life imprisonment or death.

Said The Telegraph (April 7): “The sentence should send an unambiguous message to molesters and rapists and its impact has been made stronger by the fairly short time between the law’s enactment and its implementation... The death sentence stands out however, not only because of its firmness but also because, unlike in the 2012 Delhi rape case that turned into murder, the women in the Shakti Mills case are alive. For those against capital publishment per se, neither matters... Still, it is heartening to see that India’s justice system can move fast if it wants to...” The Asian Age (April 6) said referring to two judgements on rape in different parts of the country on the same day that they “have rendered signal service to the cause of women of our land”. The paper said that the death sentence pronounced on three double rapists “sets a frightening precedent for any repeat offender of such a heinous crime”. Said the paper: “Deterrent punishment is the only way to get the message across that crimes against women will not be tolerated in our society. The two judgements carry that message in strident tones.” The paper said that the condemned men have their legal rights and can do anything to escape the noose but, it added: “The mood of the higher judiciary is also one of coming down severely on such offences that tear at the very moral fibre of the nation, subjecting women to unimaginable indignity”. In conclusion the paper said: “A lot more remains to be done on the count of women’s safety but the judiciary has shown the way in tackling a menace that has singed the national mood. The matter of how to treat juvenile offenders when they commit heinous crimes like rape has to be tackled firmly.” Deccan Herald has its own views. According to it, “the sentence is wrong in the first place because capital punishment is wrong in any type of case.” As it saw it, “Death sentence is barbaric and should have no place in a civilised society.” The paper said “justice does not lie in the physical elimination of the wrong-doers and it is bad in principle and ineffective in practice (since) it has not been a deterrent against crime.” It added: “The IPC amendment which prescribed death sentence for rape was excessive and aberrant. The trial judge’s interpretation of the provision is also suspect. A strong legal view is that a second offence should attract action under the provision only if it is committed after conviction in the first case...” No doubt there will be more comment in the media in the days to come.

ONFUCIUS’ favourite disciple was Yan Hui, most probably one of the most impoverished of them all. Sima Niu, in contrast to Yan Hui, was from a hereditarily noble family hailing from the Song state. Under Confucius’ teachings, the disciples became well-learned in the principles and methods of government. He often engaged in discussion and debate with his students and gave high importance to their studies in history, poetry, and ritual. Confucius advocated loyalty to principle rather than to individual in which reform was to be achieved by persuasion rather than violence. Even though Confucius denounced them for their practices, the aristocracy was likely attracted to the idea of having trustworthy officials who were studied in morals as the circumstances of the time made it desirable. In fact, the disciple Zilu even died defending his ruler in Wei. Yang Hu, who was a subordinate of the Ji family, had dominated the Lu government from 505 to 502 and even attempted a coup, which narrowly failed. As a likely consequence, it was after that that the first disciples

of Confucius were appointed to government positions. Few of Confucius’ disciples went on to attain official positions of some importance, some of which were arranged by Confucius. By the time Confucius was 50 years old, the Ji family had consolidated their power in the Lu state over the ruling ducal house. Even though the Ji family had practices that Confucius disagreed and disapproved, they nonetheless gave Confucius’

his death. These efforts spread Confucian ideals to students who then became officials in many of the royal courts in China, thereby giving Confucianism the first wide-scale test of its dogma. Two of Confucius’s most famous later followers emphasised radically different aspects of his teachings. In the centuries after his death, Mencius and Xun Zi both composed important teachings elaborating in different ways on the fundamental ideas associated with Confucius. M

any leading faces from Indian cinema flaunted their inked fingers at the Mumbai polls on Thursday but celebrities like Priyanka Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar and Sonakshi Sinha skipped the electoral process to attend IIFA awards in the US. Actors who apparently left for IIFA without casting their votes also include names like Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, Madhuri Dixit, Boman Irani, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Bipasha Basu. The ones who flaunted or talked about casting their votes were Amitabh Bachchan and family, Shah Rukh Khan, Farhan Akhtar, Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, Vidya Balan and Preity Zinta, reports PTI. Farhan, who is hosting the awards night with Shahid Kapoor on April 26, stayed back to cast his vote before leaving for Tampa Bay, Florida, where the four-day-long award ceremony is taking place. Zinta also flew down from Abu Dhabi to exercise her voting right. Kangana Ranaut and Subhash Ghai took a break from promoting their films to cast their votes. But there was a clash of interests as IIFA and Mumbai voting day happened on the same day. “IIFA bound now... Dunno if I’ll make my flight! Manhattan traffic really gives Mumbai competition. Can’t wait for sunny Florida. Tampa Bay here I come...,” Priyanka tweeted. Sonakshi Sinha’s actor-politician father

Shatrughan Sinha may be in the fray this Lok Sabha elections from Patna Sahib but the actress is in IIFA. “Finally made it to Tampa Bay after a crazy 32 hours!!! Thank you for the love,” Sonakshi tweeted on Wednesday. While Kirron Kher, who is fighting on a BJP ticket from Chandigarh, cast her vote with son Sikandar on Thursday, her actor-husband Anupam Kher is in the US to attend IIFA. “Reached New York. And now Tampa walo! I am on my way to you. Love you all.:) Landed finally in Tampa,” Anupam Kher, tweeted on April 22. Kher will premiere his short film ‘I Went Shopping for Robert De Niro’ at IIFA. Shahid, Saif, Richa Chadda and Aditi Rao Haidari also left early for the US. Haidari, clearly perturbed by fans’ attack on Twitter, tweeted that she was not a voter from Mumbai. “Calm down all you aggressive people... My vote is registered in Delhi and not Mumbai...,” she tweeted. Sonam Kapoor took to Twitter today to flaunt her inked finger but her actor-father Anil Kapoor is attending IIFA. “The madness in Tampa begins,” he tweeted with a photo. Vivek Oberoi, who was campaigning for BJP recently, gave the voting process a miss to attend IIFA. “Madness at IIFA Stomp! Tampa rocks! Incredible energy and so much love... Thank you for all the love! I feel so blessed and you guys totally rock,” Vivek posted on Twitter.

They should offer ‘voting through SMS’ facility for the convenience of the voters on holiday!

Rice noodles: Rice noodles are extremely thin, so even people who don’t usually like noodles are fond of them. If you’ve ever had a Thai salad, you’ve tasted rice noodles! They’re made with rice flour and usually cooked in soups and salads after being soaked. spaghetti: Ah, there’s a word you recognise, right?! We don’t need to explain what spaghetti is to most, but just in case — the thin, long noodles are made from something that is known as durum wheat and are incredibly easy to cook, which is probably why they’re so popular. egg noodles: If you ever visit Singapore, you can’t skip out on trying their egg noodles. They are available in a variety of thick and thin noodles, go very well in soups and are made from wheat flour. The reason they’re called egg noodles is because they are also made with a flour and egg yolks mixture. Ramen noodles: If you’re thinking of a certain Indian brand, let’s stop you right there. These noodles are the type we use most because they can be cooked in under five minutes, they are available dried or fresh and originated in China, even though they are used in most Japanese noodle dishes (especially those stir fried with pork or fish). They are a combination of egg, flour, water and salt.

Noodle kNowledge

They’ve been around for centuries and have become a much loved food item in India as well. But, there is still so little we know about noodles. So, Rhea Dhanbhoora & Shirley Mistry tell you about the types of noodles, how to cook them and our favourite places to devour a bowl of piping hot noodles WheRe did theY come FRom? Although the Arabs and Italians have always claimed to have created noodles, in reality, it is China (unsurprisingly) that gave birth to noodles. Text in a Chinese book written between AD 25 and 220, is the earliest record we have of noodles. If you are wondering whether noodles were any different back then, they weren’t — for most part. In 2005, a group of scientists discovered the world’s oldest noodles in Lajia — an archaeological site in China. Made using grains from millet grass, unlike the wheat flour that we use today, these noodles were found in an overturned, sealed bowl. Once tests were performed on them, it was found that they were around 4,000 years old, laying to rest all claims of noodles having originated in any other country.

most so that the next time you’re planning on cooking noodles, you know what options you have.

udon noodles: The Japanese are the masters of all things noodle related and udon noodles are a great example of this fact. These noodles are also available dried, but the fresh variety is springy and extremely good for dishes with strong flavours.

somen noodles: Another Japanese favourite, these noodles are very similar to udon ones and are also made of wheat. The biggest difference though, is that they are usually served cold, with a dipping sauce. Pick some up for the summer, since they’ll keep you cool.

cellophane noodles: Starch that’s collected from green mung is used to make these noodles. As the name suggests, they’re translucent and quite smooth on the We can’t tell you about every single type of noodle that tongue. While most recipes use them deep fried, they’re exists across the world — but we can try to tell you about often soaked and added to a meal.

soba: These buckwheat flour noodles are extremely popular and are one of our favourites. Extremely delicate, these thin noodles are surprisingly flavourful and served plain as they have a distinct flavour and texture.

caRt noodles: These are a type of noodle that is extremely popular in Hong Kong. They are generally sold on the street (that’s where the name comes from, since they are sold in street carts), so they’ve had a reputation for being the cheaper variety — but they are still delicious enough to try!

dotoRi guksu noodles: These Korean noodles are quite interesting! They’re made with a combination of buckwheat and wheat flour and can also be made with acorn flour. They are used mostly in noodle soup dishes.

cooking noodles peRFectlY Noodles are a delicate food — cook them too much and they turn to mush, much like baby food; cook them too little and you have on your hands noodles that have too much of a bite to them. Follow our tips to make sure you cook them just right: l Boil your water really well before you put your noodles in. This ensures that the temperature of the water doesn't fall too much when you put your noodles in the water and the bubbles help keep the noodles separate. l Stir the noodles only once after you put them into the water to separate all the strands and make sure that they are all submerged under the water. Too much stirring will cause your noodles to break. l Salt your water well, because noodles absorb salt the best at this stage. l Don’t cook two kinds of noodles together, as each variety takes a different amount of time to be perfectly cooked. When you mix two types, you run the risk of overcooking one type and/or under-cooking the other. l While people are on the fence about adding a teaspoon of oil to the noodles once they are done to prevent them from sticking, there is no harm in doing this — especially if you are a beginner. l Never rinse your noodles in cold water after they are done boiling as all the starch on the noodles gets washed off. The starch is what helps the sauce and seasoning stick to the noodles, so getting rid of it is not a good idea. l Choose a big pot to boil your noodles in and fill it with a lot of water, so that the noodles don't get crowded and stick to each other. l Cook your noodles as per the instructions on the packet and taste them intermittently. When they have the slightest bite in the centre or resistance, it means that the noodles are done. You don't want to cook them through and through, as they will then later turn to mush when you stir fry them.

« store review: saks salon

simply sublime A

trip to the spa at the end of a harrowing week at work is always welcome, so I was quite excited as I made my way to Saks Salon. The overbearingly harsh heat was making it impossible for me to bother about moisturising my skin deeply, as the icky feeling it leaves behind is extremely uncomfortable. So, when I walked in for my Cellutox Aroma Seaweed Ocean Wrap, I was elated. I was told that the treatment would work on cellulite and help detox my skin as well as leave it nourished and smooth. The treatment is divided into three parts — a scrub, a wrap and a moisturiser. After settling into their luxurious Diamond Suite, my therapist started with the scrub, which included ginger, lime, oil and sea salt. The technique employed to administer the scrub was a combination of rubbing my skin while massaging the scrub into it. Considering my therapist was taking her time with the scrub, I

Shirley Mistry visited Saks Salon to try out their Cellutox Aroma Sea Weed Ocean Wrap. Read on to find out whether it lives up to the promises it makes

was scared that I would develop angry, red patches on my skin, but it turned out that the scrub had just the right amount of abrasion and did a great job. After a quick shower, she applied a wrap made out of clay, seaweed and marine algae and wrapped me up in a sheet of foil. While the body wrap dried, she delivered a quick, yet extremely effective face and head massage and even cleansed, toned and moisturised my face. Once the wrap had been left on for the stipulated amount of time, another shower ensued and the third part of the treatment, which is a moisturiser containing papaya and pineapple, was applied. The treatment left my skin incredible, soft , well-hydrated and gave it a glow that lasted a full three days. The moisturiser applied at the end seals in the treatment. Even when I woke up the next morning, I found that my skin felt just as hydrated as the evening before and this time I could skip moisturising

deals we love this week

my skin without the fear of damaging it further. However, as far as it’s claim to help reduce cellulite goes, I didn't notice a marked difference, but I am sure a few sessions would take care of that as well. It does what it promises for the most part — refreshes, detoxifies, deep cleans and locks in moisture unlike any other treatment I've undergone before. The treatment lasts 75 minutes and will set you back a whopping `4,495, so it is definitely not a treatment you can indulge in every other week. But, if you feel like your skin needs some serious attention, this wrap is a good start. Follow it up with regular exfoliation and moisturisation at home and your skin will thank you. Seafood calling

>> The ambience at Villa 69 is to die for. The pristine white furniture adds a French touch to the restaurant

Popular fine-dinning restaurant, Kolkata Callin’ is a good place for comforting and authentic Bengali food. Dev Goswami finds out more

K

olkata Callin', a popular Bengali fine-dinning restaurant in Andheri (E), recently moved to a new location, with cosy interiors and a refurbished menu. The overall vibe is comforting and the inspiration behind the restaurant is the adda — a meet and great rendezvous point that Kolkata is known for. The menu has several north-Indian and Chinese dishes, but their main attraction is Bengali food — which has three pages dedicated to it on their menu. You can look forward to a large variety of fish cooked in various gravies and spices. We started our meal with an interesting sounding Vegetable Chop (`80) — interesting because the owner told us that it is a unique recipe that uses beetroot instead of what you’d expect — potato. The dish was excellent! It was perfectly crisp on the outside and deliciously soft on the inside. It was served with an equally excellent mustard sauce that just enhanced the taste making it a must-try dish.

>> The food at Kolkata Callin’ is quite satisfying, and has unique and authentic dishes such as the Prawn Malai Curry (inset) >> Left to Right: The Funghi Casalingha did not stand out. However, try their Crackling Chicken and Herbs Crusted Fish, which demand a second visit to the restaurant

Dine in a French villa

Located in Juhu, newly opened Villa 69 is truly a piece of paradise in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Mumbai. Yamini Walia visits the restaurant and gives you her verdict

A

s soon as you enter Villa 69, the ambience takes your breath away. The ornate furniture gives the restaurant a pretty, French vibe. There is also a lounge, with comfortable sofa-seating, intricate mosaic tiling that reflects the light beautifully and a DJ playing popular tracks. The lounge is an open-air area, consisting of a bar and a wood fire oven, with a hint of refreshing cinnamon lingering in the air. We ordered an assortment of vegetarian and nonvegetarian starters. The service seemed a little slow, and it took quite a while for our order to arrive. However, our meal started on a good note with the Chicken Roulade (`295), which was well-cooked and sufficiently stuffed. Although, the Funghi Casalingha (`245), a preparation of mushrooms tossed in cheese and chilli sauce was a bit too creamy, the Villa 69 triangle (`245) was fresh, crisp, non-oily and filled with soft corn and spinach. However, the Mustard Paprika Fish (`295) was the highlight of our evening as it literally melted in the mouth. It was mildly spiced, yet extremely flavourful. The Chicken Skewers (`295), served with jalapeno dip, were delicious as well. The chicken was tasty and came off the skewer easily. The slightly tough Cottage Cheese Sorprese (`245) didn’t match up to the rest of the dishes as the flavour didn’t quite hit the spot. A fresh mint and lime dip would

have worked beautifully with all of the above. Moving on to the main course, we ordered Chicken Piccata (`425), served with spaghetti pomodoro and garlic lemon-sauce, which was delicious. The filling tasted so great that it could be eaten by itself. In fact, we would recommend visiting (and re-visiting) the restaurant based on this dish alone. The Mushroom Steak (`395), served with mashed potatoes and paprika cream was quite average. However, the mashed potatoes are one of the best that I have eaten in the city. Finally, we ordered the three-layer mousse cake (`225) to fulfil our sweet cravings. The presentation of the cake hit the bulls-eye and it tasted good too, with a dark chocolate layer at the end that made our evening. All in all, we really enjoyed the whole experience at Villa 69. Visit this place for the ambience and the food. You won't be disappointed — we weren't! Where 30C/O, Paradise Banquets, Opposite PVR Cinemas, Juhu Alcohol served Yes (Pint of beer: approximately `225) Meal for two `1,300 (approximately) Contact 8422810000/ 65969669

We then tried the Daab Chingri (`360) and the Ilish Bhaapa (`330) — the former a prawn dish while the latter was a mouth-watering Hilsa preparation. Both were served with steamed rice. The Daab Chingri is a dish of prawns cooked in a variety of spices, with a strong hit of coconut. The dish had a slightly spicy flavour, ending with a hint of sweetness. Overall, it was a wholesome dish and you’ll end up polishing off your plate. The Ilish Bhaapa on the other hand, perfectly showcased two ingredients — mustard and the Hilsa fish. Hilsa is an extremely bony fish, so eating it can be quite a chore. However, just like us, you’ll be satisfied with the strong mustard flavour and it will be worth the trouble. We ended our meal with Chutney Aamshopto (`90), a sweet chutney that contained ripe mangoes, khajur and raisins. It is a good and unique experience for those who haven't had Bengali food before. Overall, our time at Kolkata Callin’ was quite satisfying. The food isn't extraordinary, but it is authentic and wholesome. The restaurant is worth a try and even though it might be not the best dining experience you’ve ever had, you’ll have a good time. Stop the bleed! Heartbleed is a recently discovered internet security flaw with quite a few headlines to its credit. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, Shirley Mistry tells you all you need to know about this security breach

Y

ou have a couple of minutes to kill before you head out for a party. You log on to your favourite website to browse through their new range of products. Before you know it, an hour has gone by and your cart is filled with 10 things that you don't need, but want to buy anyway. You’ve been shopping from this website for years, so you quickly fill in your credit card details and are just about to hit 'submit'... Stop right there, because Heartbleed might be lurking in the background! Heartbleed is an internet security breach that makes trusted websites — from e-commerce ones to your email — anything but trustworthy. Remember the small lock symbol in your browser that indicates secure data transmission? Heartbleed renders this useless

and can gain access to all your personal information.

What is heartbleed? Most websites that require you to have a login, password and enter your bank information (among other kinds of confidential information), use a software called OpenSSL to maintain security. The software encrypts all your personal information, so that anyone with malicious intentions such as hackers, bots or even other websites, cannot gain access to it. Heartbleed is a glitch in version 1.0.1 of OpenSSL that can let people access your private information such as your Facebook and Twitter login details, or your credit card details if you have them saved.

>> If any of your accounts have been affected by Heartbleed, you could be at the risk of identity theft, virus attacks and compromised bank details

Who’s affected? Websites such as Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo Mail, Instagram and Dropbox are just a few of the many websites that use OpenSSL and are therefore at risk. Also, if you are running your cell phones on Android’s Jelly Bean (Version 4.1.1) you may be vulnerable to the Heartbleed bug.

Protect yourself Although the bug is said to have affected several applications and websites and there is very little you can do to control that, there are definitely certain steps that you can take to minimise the risk of your personal information being poached by someone. track your email: First things first, start off by monitoring your email account. Make sure suspicious spam-like emails aren't being sent out from your account by keeping a close watch on your outbox/ sent items. Also, make sure you check your bank statements carefully to spot

transactions that you have not made. Don't just keep an eye for transactions involving large sums. More often than not, someone who is misusing your information will carry out transactions of small amounts to stay unnoticed. uPdate your softWare: If you have a cellphone powered by Android, be sure to regularly update the software. Also, update your mobile applications as soon as an update is available. Watch your Websites: Make a list of the websites that have your personal information, including the ones you have visited infrequently and find out how they are dealing with Heartbleed. If possible, also sign up for updates or an intimation when they have re-secured their website/ application. reset PassWords: Once you know that a website has patched the Heartbleed glitch, change your password for that website. Do this step only after you know that they have rid themselves of Heartbleed, otherwise you aren't really securing your information. Remember ‘password@123’ is never a good password, so make sure you pick one that is really secure and includes an upper case aplhabet, a numerical and a symbol.

After witnessing the brutal slaying of her Forest Officer father, Sunder Rajan, at the hands of dreaded dacoit Jageera, Sandhya goes to Colonel Krishnakant Puri and asks for his assistance in bringing an end to Jageera’s rule in the Devdurg region. Krishnakant agrees to assist her, and summons about a dozen of his fellow officers and subordinates to assist him. They all assemble at Devdurg with all the necessary ammunitions and arms to combat Jageera, not realizing that Jageera has influence over the local police detachment, who will prevent Puri and his men to possess any guns and weapons. This does not deter Puri and his men, and they continue to stay on in Devdurg and gain the confidence of the villagers. B4U, 5 p.m.

Markets At A New High

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (April 25, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY:

The Nifty rose marginally on Wednesday (April 23, 2014) a net 25.45 points (0.37%) and closed at the 6840 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 6823 points level. It then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 6861 points level at 9.16 a.m. The index then declined to register the day’s low at the 6820 points level at 9.17 a.m. The market then rose and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session and moved in a range of 41 points. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 27 were gainers, 22 were losers and 1 remained unchanged. Substantial buying was seen in capital goods and banking stocks, while selling was witnessed in realty, consumer durables, power, oil & gas and IT stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 25.47%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was neutral. Amongst all the traded stocks, 783 were gainers, 748 were losers and 77 remained unchanged. Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is now turned flat (positive if it rises). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market with a positive bias.

Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 6874 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6841 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6821. Support (2) = 6800. Resistance (1) = 6861. Resistance (2) = 6882. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a small white body candle on substantially higher volumes. PEPL reported yet another good quarter, with Q4FY14 sales and collections at 0.9msf/Rs 6.1bn (+11% YoY) and Rs 6.6bn (+23% YoY) respectively. For FY14, the operational performance met expectations, with sales/collections/ leases hitting 98%/108%/104% of their respective targets. Management maintained a high launch target for FY15, which implies steady volumes and improved cash flows. Besides, a pick-up in deliveries starting H2FY15 (10+msf expected in FY15) should aid stock performance. Maintain BUY. New sales buoyant despite no new launches: PEPL reported pre-sales of 0.9msf/Rs 6.1bn – a good set of numbers, particularly since no new project was launched during the quarter. With FY14 sales of Rs 36.3bn, the company achieved 98% of its full-year target. For FY15, the launch plan remains strong (10+msf in FY15), which may keep volumes steady given the higher focus on mid-income projects. First-time revenue recognition to boost revenues, PAT: PEPL is expected to start recognizing revenues from a few of its past projects. Consequently, we expect a +9%/+7% QoQ increase in its Q4FY14 revenues/PAT to Rs 4.7bn/Rs 0.9bn. Maintain BUY: We like PEPL for the improvement in its scale of business and comfortable cash flows, though we did expect a moderation in new launches and volumes. However, with management indicating a strong launch pipeline of mid-income projects, we could see continued performance on this front as well. A sustained visibility to volumes and a pick-up in delivery starting H2FY15 remain the key stock triggers. Maintain BUY.

Kotak Securities calls a ‘Buy’ on Mahindra & Mahindra CMP: Rs. 1039

Target: Rs. 1200

Tractor volume growth moderates in March 2014: Domestic tractor volume growth moderated in March 2014 (+5% yoy) as hailstorms damaged crops in MP, UP and certain regions of Maharashtra and Rajasthan. We believe the fall in demand in March 2014 is a blip as rural labor income continues to grow at a healthy pace, which is likely to result in a shift towards mechanization. We maintain our BUY rating on Mahindra & Mahindra due to (1) attractive valuations (trading at 9X FY2016E standalone EPS) and (2) our expectation of tractor demand to remain strong in FY2015 and market share loss in UV/SUV segment to stem in FY2015. Tractor volume growth to remain subdued in 1QFY15 but underlying fundamentals remain strong: Rural wages have been growing at a healthy pace, although moderated a bit from >20% yoy growth in incomes to 15-16% yoy growth. Trends in agricultural and non-agricultural income of rural households also indicate a similar fashion of growth. Sharp rise in rural wages in agricultural jobs will drive mechanization of farms. Crop prices, especially that of paddy, wheat, cotton and soybean, have grown at a strong pace over the past one year. Paddy prices have increased by 23% yoy while cotton and soybean prices are up 15-20% yoy. We expect soyabean prices to go up further due to major damage to soyabean crop due to unseasonal rains. Tractor demand has remained strong across India in FY2014 except for Tamil Nadu. Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh were the fastest growing states in FY2014. We did not see any major impact on demand in Maharashtra despite crop damage due to hailstorms. The share of the 41-50 hp segment has increased by 330 bps in FY2014. Share of M&M in this segment has also increased by 30 bps, which has led to improvement in M&M’s market share. Our channel checks suggest dealer inventory levels are comfortable. Tractor demand is likely to remain flattish in 1QFY15 due to high base effect last year and impact of recent unseasonal rains on farmer incomes. The availability of finance for the tractor segment remains strong and farmers are increasingly looking at mechanization of farms due to sharp increase in farm labor costs, which is likely to keep demand fairly strong, in our view.

Motilal Oswal calls a ‘Buy’ on Larsen & Toubro CMP: Rs. 1377

Target: Rs. 1520

Maintain Buy, Well positioned to benefit from economic recovery: L&T is exposed to several levers across business/geographic segments and has emerged as the E&C partner of choice in India, which provides a robust foundation to capitalize on the next leg of investment cycle. Hence, despite a very strong near term performance, we remain positive on L&T. Without drawing any inferences on the current stage and possible pace of investment cycle recovery, we note that while the meaningful uptick in order intake for L&T in the past cycle commenced only from FY06, large part of the PER rerating happened during FY04-06 (PER expanded from 11x in FY03 to 21x in FY06). Currently, L&T quotes at consolidated PER of 29x FY14E, 23x FY15E and 19x FY16E. Maintain Buy with revised Price Target of INR1,520/sh (18x FY16E for E&C earnings).

Cyber Criminals Targeting Large Corporates 69% of targeted cyber attacks in India on large companies: Symantec

By A Business Reporter

M

ore than two-thirds of targeted cyber attacks in India are focused on large firms, with criminals willing to wait longer to strike for bigger rewards, security software maker Symantec said yesterday. There is a significant shift in cyber-criminal behaviour, with the bad guys plotting for months before pulling off huge heists instead of quicker hits with smaller rewards, Symantec India Technology Sales Director Tarun Kaura told PTI."They are focusing on large enterprises, with over 69 % of the targeted attacks in India carried out on them," he added. Globally, targeted attacks were up 91 % in 2013 and lasted an average of three times

longer compared to 2012.The number of "mega breaches" is on the rise, according to Symantec's Internet Security Threat Report. Globally, there was a 62 % increase in the number of data breaches from the previous year, resulting in more than 552 million identities exposed. Each of the eight top data breaches in 2013 resulted in the loss of tens of millions of data records. By comparison, 2012 had only a single data breach that reached the threshold. "One mega breach can be worth 50 smaller attacks. While the level of sophistication continues to grow among attackers, what was surprising was their willingness to be a lot more patient -– waiting to strike until the reward is bigger and better," he said. The size and scope of breaches is

exploding, putting the trust and reputation of businesses at risk and increasingly compromising consumers' personal information from credit card numbers to passwords and bank account details, he added. "The potential for huge paydays means large-scale attacks are here to stay. Companies of all sizes need to re-examine, re-think and possibly re-architect their security posture," Kaura said. The report found that support functions with access to critical data emerged as the strongest target for attackers. "Personal assistants and those working in public relations were the two most targeted professions as cyber criminals use them as a stepping stone toward higher-profile targets like celebrities or business executives," he said.

Vedanta’s Earnings To Rise This is credit positive for Sesa Sterlite, says Moody's. Restart of SSL’s once very profitable iron ore business in Goa will broaden its earnings base and reduce its reliance on dividend contributions from its subsidiaries, Cairn India and Hindustan Zinc for its cash flow By A Business Reporter

L

ast Monday, India’s Supreme Court lifted an 18-month-old ban on mining in the state of Goa, clearing the way for iron ore mining in Goa to resume by the end of the year. “This is credit positive for Sesa Sterlite Limited (SSL, unrated), Vedanta Resources Plc’s (Ba1 stable) 58.3%-owned Indian subsidiary. Lifting the ban follows the restart of operations after the lifting of a similar ban in the state of Karnataka in December 2013. The restart of SSL’s once very profitable iron ore business in Goa will broaden its earnings base and reduce its reliance on dividend contributions from its subsidiaries, Cairn India Limited (unrated) and Hindustan Zinc Limited (unrated) for its cash flow” says Moody's in a Credit Outlook report on the company. According to it “Including the sale, authorised in December 2013, of 4.0 million tonnes of Goan iron ore stock and 2.29 million tonnes of iron ore mined in Karnataka, we expect SSL’s iron-ore business to gen-

erate EBITDA of around $300 million in the fiscal year ending 31 March 2015. Although the additional EBITDA is relatively small in the context of Vedanta’s roughly $5 billion annual EBITDA, it is significant for SSL, which generated standalone EBITDA of $342 million in the nine months ended 31 December 2013 and which included a $23 million loss at the iron ore business. However, without the combined $350 million of dividends from Cairn India and Hindustan Zinc, SSL would have been unable to meet its finance charges of $433 million from internal sources.” In “fiscal 2015, we expect SSL to mine only around 1.6 million tonnes in Goa. In addition to the Supreme Court’s decision, SSL needs clearances from the Union environment ministry and the approval of the Goa state government. Although it is difficult to predict when SSL will clear these hurdles, we expect the company to obtain them in time for mining operations to restart after the monsoon season and probably in the final quarter of

Pharma Exports Slowest In 15 Years By A Business Reporter

I

ndia's pharmaceutical exports registered slowest growth in at least 15 years at 1.2 % to USD 14.84 billion last fiscal amid growing tension with the US over intellectual property rights related issues. As the IPR issues raised by the US - India's biggest market - are unlikely to be resolved anytime soon, industry observers say that pharma exports will miss the target of USD 25 billion set for 201415 in a government strategy paper.

According to the Commerce Ministry data, in 2012-13, the country's pharma exports aggregated USD 14.66 billion. The growth registered in 2013-14 is the slowest in nearly 15 years. The previous slowest was in 2009-10 when the pharma exports grew by just 5.9 %. In calendar year 2000, they grew by 7 %. "2013-14 has seen slowdown in growth because of the US raising concerns and due to increase in global competition," PV Appaji, Executive Director, Pharmexcil told PTI.

fiscal 2015” says Moody's. The Supreme Court’s decision caps iron ore mining production in Goa at 20 million tonnes per year, split among the different miners. This level is less than half the ironore volume mined in Goa before the ban. Our estimated contribution is based on SSL returning to half its pre-ban annual run rate of 14 million tonnes. In fiscal 2015, “we expect EBITDA per tonne of around $40 and an EBITDA margin of 40%, based on our assumption of global iron ore prices (for 63% Fe content) of $110$120 per tonne in 2014. Low seaborne iron ore prices, coupled with the 30% export tax that India applied to iron ore, mean that Vedanta cannot reach the 59% EBITDA margin it achieved in fiscal 2011, even if it returns to past production levels. In 2011, when the export tax was 5%, Vedanta exported almost 90% of its iron ore from Goa and achieved EBITDA of $65 per tonne. Furthermore, major miners in Australia and Brazil are bringing on new supply in the next one or two years even as overcapacity has worsened in the seaborne iron ore market because of slowing demand from China’s steel industry. This has resulted in current iron ore prices falling 14% since the start of this year to $114 per tonne.” Although Vedanta’s Karnataka mines can supply nearby steel companies, “we expect domestic sales of Goa-mined iron-ore to be limited because the state is far from the main Indian steel production cluster in the eastern part of the country. Furthermore, domestic blast furnaces have limited capability to handle the relatively low quality Goan iron ore (average 55% Fe content), which needs to be pelletized at an extra cost before use,” concludes the report.

Major Ports Saw 22% Jump In Thermal Coal Cargo

Amid widening demand-supply gap and increased requirement of dry-fuel, the country's major ports saw 22 per cent jump in imported thermal coal cargo at 71.60 million tonnes (MT) in 2013. Handling of coking coal, which is used mainly for steel-making, witnessed an 18.26 per cent increase, ranging from 18 to 33.12 million tonnes, according to the latest data by the Indian Ports Association (IPA). These 12 major ports had handled 58.65 MT and 28 MT of thermal and coking coal, respectively in 2012-13. Altogether, they handled 105 MT coal during the last fiscal, against 87 MT in 2012-13. — Business Desk with inputs from PTI

I can only make fun movies: Vikas Bahl

24

BOLLYWOOD

Director Vikas Bahl is riding high on the success of ‘Queen’. Rajesh V. Gaur and Suneel V. Gaur interviewed the director who has earned the stamp of excellence in B-town.

Did you feel Kangana was the right choice after you started rehearsing with her? Kangana fitted the bill perfectly, but it was also a chance that I was taking...till I met Kangana and narrated the character to her. When I started rehearsing with her, I realised that it was the correct decision to cast her.

Don’t you feel that Bollywood is over dependent on the ‘star system’? That’s a worldwide phenomenon – you get a star attached to a story, it just makes the film bigger. And also, they are stars because they are very good actors and make your film better.

What are the other projects you are working on? My next movie ‘Shaandaar’ is basically a destination wedding film. I am yet to complete my writing which I feel is the most important stage in filmmaking.

Honey gives Akshay 3 numbers ildaar’ and ‘Yaaron ka Yaar’ is how Yo Yo Honey Singh likes to describe himself. He proved it with his action recently when he flew back from his current American tour for some very special recordings in the new Akshay Kumar film ‘Shaukeen’. Apparently Akshay who has collaborated repeatedly with Yo Yo in the past requested the rapper-performer for one special number in the Abhishek Sharma-directed remake of Basu Chatterjee’s ‘Shaukeen’ which pairs Akshay with Lisa Haydon. Yo Yo insisted on doing three songs instead of one.

Moviegoers seem to relate instantly to ‘Queen’? It’s relatable yet funny. That combination is what makes it interesting. You can connect to the way the heroine talks and then you connect with the humour that’s in it. So it seems like it’s straight out of your life, which I think works.

After ‘Chillar Party’ directing a film like ‘Queen’ is such a striking contrast? I can only make fun movies; I don’t know how to make serious movies. I don’t think I would want to make one genre of stories. I would like to keep exploring new ones. I always get excited with different kinds of stories and genres.

How did producers Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya, who are both able directors themselves, contribute to ‘Queen’? As they’re both directors, they gave me inputs and then we took it up from there. But after they did that, they trusted me and allowed me to take it forward and gave me full freedom.

Says Honey Singh, “Main aisa hi hoon. Anything for a friend. And there are two stars in Bollywood for whom I’d do anything. Akshay Paaji and Shah Rukh Bhai are like my brothers. When Akshay Paaji requested me to do one song, I told him, ‘Ek kyun, teen le lo.’ I feel my tuning with Akshay Paaji is such that he is able to put a face to what I sing as effectively as I do.” Yo Yo also flew down specially to be with his other favourite Shah Rukh Khan in Abu Dhabi last week for the IPL match and the after party. Says Yo Yo, “I was in Dubai when Shah Rukh Bhai invited me for the match and the after party. It was masti unlimited. Nothing naughty, though. For that there are my own parties.” Yo Yo also seems to have made friends with Jacqueline Fernandes at the recent Miss India pageant. Says Yo Yo, “It was nothing. We were judges at the contest. I happened to mention to her that we hadn’t been given anything to eat for nearly four hours. Jacqueline fished out these amazing diet laddoos. We gorged on them together.”

Alia fits for the role

By Chaitanya Padukone

A

ctress Alia Bhatt seemed ecstatic, as her performance in ‘2 States’ is eliciting favourable reviews as also box-office responses, despite the raging election fever. Enthuses the Bhatt babe, “Unlike the rustic Meenamma in ‘Chennai Express’ who hilariously rattles off in the hardcore Tamil accent, my character in ‘2 States’ is distinctly different. Because my screencharacter Ananya Swaminathan is very urban, trendy, with an up-market education (IIM) and she hardly uses her south Indian accent, except maybe a few phrases while conversing with her own family. In fact Arjun Kapoor’s character is zapped to know that my character is a south Indian, Simply because there are no stereotype giveaway attributes. Playing a Tamilian girl minus the put-on accent was in itself a challenge,” insists the ‘SOTY’ heroine, whose much-hyped movie adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller novel ‘2 States’ released last week.

Isn’t it true that Alia had read Bhagat’s novel much before she was even considered for the lead role? The outspoken Alia reacts, “That’s right, I had checked out the book just as an avid reader and I fell in love with the exuberant character Ananya. My talented director Abhishek Verman kept reminding me that exuding energy in my role doesn’t mean hamming or speaking fast. It is to speak coherently with that glint in my eyes,” elaborates Bhatt. Apparently Alia is peeved at being repeatedly asked about her smooching scenes with her hero Arjun in ‘2 States’. “In today’s WhatsApp fast forward zamaana , why these prudish reactions over live-in relationships and brief kissing scenes. It all happens in a spontaneous flow and it’s shot aesthetically. Despite the traditionally conservative conflicting interstate romance, we also highly respect parental consent and family values in the movie,” shrugs Alia whose dad Mahesh Bhatt’s banner has made smooch-laden erotica films like ‘Murder’.

Tanuj Virwani’s second coming Tanuj Virwani, son of popular yesteryear star Rati Agnihotri, made an impressive debut with the romantic film ‘Love you Suniyo’ and now his second ambitious film ‘Purani Jeans’ is all set to release. We talked to Tanuj at length about his next release. Here is what the Virwani scion has to say to Sandeep Hattangadi.

How excited are you about ‘Purani Jeans’? I have worked hard on the film and am hoping that the film does well and my performance will be appreciated . What kind of drama can we expect from the film? The film unfolds as a coming-ofage drama about a summer where Siddharth Ray (me), his best friend Sam (Aditya Seal) and their gang of friends rediscover bonds of friendship and love. A summer when everything changes for the group: they experience the agony and ecstasy of growing up, forming enviable bonds of friendship, trust, jealousy, joy, envy and love while also dealing with problems of distant parents, broken hearts gradually leading everyone to go their own way. Tell me about your character in the film? I am a sort of a mild man-

nered bookish guy who is into poetry and literature who hails from a small town and comes to the city with the ambition of making it big in the corporate world or to be an investment banker but later realises that his choices in life are not meant for him and returns back to his home town. Who is the female lead opposite you? Isabelle Leite who plays Nayantara Sapru plays my love interest in the film.

How was the debutant director Tannushri Chatterji Basu like? She comes from the advertising industry and knows a lot about filmmaking and drawing out performances from the cast and the technical crew.

What is the USP of the film? The music by Ram Sampath which is very peppy and youth oriented and the performances of the lead cast and my real life mother Rati playing my reel mother as well.

here’s something cool as well as dignified about the way Aditya Chopra and Rani Mukherji conducted their wedding. There was no band, baaja, baraat (and YRF has a noisy wedding scene in almost every film!) and no media tamasha…yet. Aditya is a famous recluse, who is seldom seen in public and hates media interactions. So if he ignored rumours of their romance and she maintained a ‘no comments’ stance, the media cannot act all peevish now and grumble that they never made a public declaration of their relationship. from the YRF PR head about the wedding in Italy, and from Rani about her “fairy tale” coming true. Naturally, the star-watching section of the media must be feeling let down—they didn’t see this coming. And, in spite of several keep-off signals, photographers will be skulking around the airport to catch the newly-weds returning. (Never understood this timewasting at airports to take photos of celebrities getting in or out!) Frankly, every other star should have gone about their weddings this way, if they really did not want a media circus. There is no point saying they want privacy and then having details leaked to the media— or doing nothing to prevent it— so that there is a stampede at the venue anyway (remember the Abhishek BachchanAishwarya Rai wedding?). Otherwise, might as well invite the whole world and have a big party. Even though the ‘you only marry once’ rule no longer applies to Bollywood, at least the resulting carnival would make for good photo albums, videos and memories all round.

argis Fakhri’s movie appearances have definitely caught the eye of quite a few brands. Of late it has been Reebok. She will be seen in Reebok ads along with actor John Abraham and cricketer M.S. Dhoni. Reebok India has announced the launch of its new, fully-integrated campaign – “Live with Fire” that will be presented by three of the hottest stars in India – M.S. Dhoni, Nargis Fakhri and John Abraham. Since all three are fitness freaks Reebok decided to sign them, as they could relate to the campaign with their own real life experiences and fitness regimes. The campaign encourages people to stay ‘fit for life’ through a series of cult activities. The “Live with Fire” campaign was introduced globally in 2013 and highlights Reebok’s core pillars of Training, Running and Studio. Catered especially to the needs of Indian market, the new 360 degree campaign focuses on celebrating people whose lives have been transformed through their active lifestyle and aims at pushing them beyond their set goals. Shot at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the campaign captures the love of fitness of M.S. Dhoni, Nargis Fakhri and John Abraham set against the backdrop of a pulsating city life.

He now plans a very big celebration bash for the twin success this year of his ‘Highway’ and now ‘2 States.’ Speaking from Warsaw Sajid said, “By the grace of God this has so far been a fantas-

tic year for my production house. When we produced ‘Highway’, Imtiaz Ali and I planned it as a small experimental quickie while we waited for Ranbir Kapoor’s dates later during this year. How were we to know ‘Highway‘ would be such a success?! It is one of my proudest achievements. And now I hear roaring reports of ‘2 States’! So it’s a double triumph for Alia Bhatt from our

Huma all set to shed weight Ajay pushes release of ‘Action Jackson’ ctress Huma Qureshi has always received a lot of flak for being voluptuous and plump by Bollywood standards. Tired of constant being under the microscope, Huma has finally decided to shed the weight and work towards a more leaner frame, for her next film with Varun Dhawan. The movie will be directed by Sriram Raghavan. According to sources Huma’s character in the film needs to compliment Varun Dhawan who is a fitness freak and hence she decided to shed the extra pounds. Apparently, Huma will also have some love-making scenes with Varun. Huma who has read the entire script is extremely comfortable with the love scenes. And since they are essential to the film, she has said yes to them. She has been assured that since it’s Sriram’s film, the sequences will be shot aesthetically.

to release the film. “We were supposed to come in June with Akshay Kumar’s film ‘Holiday’. Then we decided against pitching our film with another biggie. Now we’re releasing after ‘Singham 2’ which is coming in August.” When asked about the date Prabhu says, “We haven’t decided yet. We are in no hurry to release. I’ve completed 80 per cent of the shooting. I am now working on the post-production and I am also finishing the script for my next film with Akshay Kumar in the lead.”

BIRTHDAY FORECAST: This year you can safely put your plans into action and you will receive all the support your need to get ahead. Amazing opportunities present themselves which you may not even have thought about. There are plenty of reasons to be happy about the family set up too. On the whole it promises to be a year that could well be called a landmark of sorts. BABIES BORN TODAY: Will be healthy, long-lived, soft featured, attractive, with a broad forehead and lovely eyes. Will be intelligent, efficient, and honest to the point of being resolute in the pursuit of a belief or principle. Being well educated a career in academics, or literary field will lead to success. ARIES (March 21 - April 20): Do not overlook an offer for business put across casually by an acquaintance. A careful consideration will indicate a money spinner. Grab the opportunity quick and formalities will proceed smoothly and swiftly. Plans for the evening may involve a meeting to build new contacts. You share an easy rapport with your beloved. Warmth trust and understanding is what makes life so much more interesting.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): You are impatient and judgmental in your dealings. This can hurt others and will feel insulted. Try and avoid scenes, which can result in tension affecting you adversely. Be open-minded and do not base your decisions on suspicions. A disagreement over a small issue should be nipped in the bud. You have to be diplomatic with the way you deal with relationships and loved ones who could be hypersensitive about most things.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): No doubt you have been working hard both your job and at your relationships, but somehow problems and misunderstandings continue. However a certain development today may make you realize that your efforts were not in vain and that will give you immense happiness. You could be feeling a little sorry for yourself today. If you need tender loving care all you need to do is ask for it.

CANCER (June 21 - July 21): You can look forward to some pleasant surprises that change your outlook for the better. Do not be in a hurry to use up spare cash. You manage to meet an important deadline. You will be lauded for your efforts in this direction. You may get a high commendation for it. For the single an old romance could get rekindled. Remember that this is not the person for you. Have patience for the right on to come along.

LEO (July 22 - August 21): Stay out of trouble. Avoid arguments with colleagues. Play it cool. Expenses are to a certain extent on the higher side. Try to keep a check on your expenses. Nevertheless, you are likely to get money due to you provided you pursue the matter today. Worries are part of life. Find time to be with friends who inspire you positively or relax with music and face tomorrow when it comes.

VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): It is better to cultivate good relationships with those that you work with. You are generally good at public relation but somehow you are today prone to commit blunders in your dealing with others today. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and wallowing in self pity. You seem have taken on more responsibilities, which is now the cause for stress and anxiety in your life. Things will ease up by evening.

LIBRA (September 22 - October 22): The larger concerns you were involved in may have to be put on the back burner as there are other interesting changes taking place in your ambit of work. Act on shorter goals that seem possible and will also add up to substantial profits. You will meet new motivating people and form good links.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): It is a busy day that will keep you on the alert throughout. News from overseas is indicated. A change is certainly indicated in your circumstances that you have been looking forward to. Those who are keen on higher studies will have to work harder. Those in creative fields will do very well. You have a great thing going in your love relationship but you need to be more demonstrative and today is a good day to start.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): An agreement or contract may require a few changes. You need to clarify any fears or doubts that you have about a new business association that you are about to finalize. It seems someone jealous of your success will try to stall your project. Do not listen to unwarranted advice and suggestions.

CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): Take risks and make the most of a good day. Cautious trading will lead to extra money. You will be very lucky at a game of chance. A tip from reliable source will lead to tremendous gains. An earlier assignment will bring in monetary gains and acclaim. Members of the opposite sex find you exceptionally attractive. You will make new friends and enlarge your social circle.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): You can afford to be a bit adventurous with work proposals from overseas, which are also likely to materialize. Watch out for minor snags. 29 A special knock is long overdue for Viru: Balaji

WINLESS MUMBAI FACE CHENNAI HURDLE Mumbai Indians will be looking for their openers Micheal Hussey and Aditya Tare to fire on all cylinders

D

UBAI: Their campaign off to a disastrous start, defending champions Mumbai Indians would be gunning for their first win in the seventh edition of IPL but it won't be easy as they take on formidable Chennai Super Kings, who are on a roll, here today. Mumbai could not have asked for a nightmarish start to the tournament as the Rohit Sharma-led side suffered big defeats to Kolkata Knight Riders (by 41 runs) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (by 7 wickets) in their first two games. The Mumbai outfit, have plenty of work to do both in their batting as well as bowling departments. It is their batting which has hurt the title holders badly as they could only muster 122 and 115 in their previous two games. Ambati Rayudu got starts in both the matches but failed

to convert them into big scores, while senior players like Mike Hussey, skipper Rohit, Kieron Pollard and all-rounder Correy Anderson have been far from impressive and they will be have to shoulder more responsibility if the team hopes to defend its title. On the bowling front, veteran Zaheer Khan and Lasith Malinga were upto the mark, but the spin department comprising Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha has let the team down. While Harbhajan has been economical, Ojha leaked runs in both the matches but it is their inability to pick up wickets which has affected the team badly and would be a cause of concern for coach John Wright and mentor Sachin Tendulkar. Chennai, on the other hand, started their IPl-7 campaign with a

six-wicket loss at the hands of Kings XI Punjab. But they stormed back into familiar territory with back-toback wins over Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals. In fact, Chennai recorded their biggest-ever win in terms of runs against the Delhi Daredevils (by 93 runs) before comfortably beating Rajasthan by seven wickets. And going by form, Chennai will start as overwhelming favourites against a struggling Mumbai side, which is seeking to get back to winning ways. Two-time winners CSK will be banking on their strong batting to give them a flying start. After his 28ball 50 against Rajasthan last night, Dwayne Smith will be eyeing yet another electrifying knock. But it is Suresh Raina, who struck his 20th fifty in IPL recently, will again be the man to watch out for.

The left-handed batsman has been one of the most prolific scorer in the IPL. After having failed in the last two outings, Brendon McCullum will be hoping to give the team a brisk start at the top along with Smith. Faf du Plessis is always a dangerous customer while Ravindra Jadeja is a dependable bat as well. And then there is skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni who will be eager to have a good hit in the middle. As far as Chennai bowling is concerned, left-arm spinner Jadeja shone with the ball against Rajasthan picking up four wickets for 33 runs. But mostly it has been a collective effort from the bowlers, especially the pace trio of Ben Hilfenhaus, Ishwar Pandey and Mohit Sharma, who were accurate with their swing bowling.

Struggling Hyderabad face inconsistent Delhi D UBAI: After a disastrous start to their campaign with two successive defeats, bottom-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad will be eager to bounce back against an inconsistent Delhi Daredevils, who are likely to be boosted by the return by Kevin Pietersen, in the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) here today. In their inaugural season, Hyderabad had reached the playoffs but their campaign this year started on a disappointing note as they first lost to Rajasthan Royals by four wickets and then were blown away by Glenn Maxwell during their 72-run crushing defeat to Kings XI Punjab. Delhi, on the other hand, blew hot and cold as they began with a eightwicket loss against Royal Challengers Bangalore, bounced back against Kolkata Knight Riders and an abject

batting failure saw them suffer an embarrassing 93-run loss to Chennai in their last match. Their campaign seemed to be effected by the absence of Kevin Pietersen, who has so far missed all the three matches, owing to an injury on his little finger, which he suffered during fielding drills with Surrey at the Oval last month. The former England skipper is hopeful of leading the Delhi outfit when they take on Hyderabad and it is going to give a big boost to their batting as well. Hyderabad too have been battling batting woes. While in their opening game, the Shikhar Dhawan-led side failed to put up enough score on board against Rajasthan, in their second match they simply capitulated against Kings XI Punjab.

DRY RUN CONTINUES... Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Gautam Gambhir walks back to the pavilion as he is dismissed for naught during his innings against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Put in to bat by Virat Kohli, KKR managed 150 runs in 20 overs with Chris Lynn top-scoring with 45 runs as Varun Aaron was the pick of the bowlers with 3/16.

By Saumojyoti S Choudhury

NEW DELHI: Kings XI Punjab's Glenn Maxwell might have overshadowed Virender Sehwag with three match-winning knocks so far in this Indian Premier League, but the team's senior pacer Laxmipathy Balaji feels a "special knock" is long overdue for the out-of-favour India opener. While the Australian stole the limelight with knocks of 95, 89 and 95, Sehwag looked a pale shadow of himself managing scores of 19, 2 and 30. Balaji said one "special knock" will turn things around for his former India team-mate. "We are waiting for a special knock from Viru (Sehwag). So far we have been overrun by Maxwell. But it's amazing to have Maxwell in the side. He is a great talent but we also should not forget the contributions of (David) Miller, (Cheteshwar) Pujara. It is very important for us to believe in ourselves as a unit," Balaji told PTI from Abu Dhabi. "Definitely he (Sehwag) has got starts but we are longing for a big innings from him. He is such a player who can change the complexion of the game on his own and if he and Maxwell can fire together it will be a treat to watch. I feel it (a big knock) is not far away and it will come over the course of the tournament," he said. Kings XI witnessed a dream start having won all their games so far, but Balaji warned his team-mates against complacency. "Definitely a great start to the season. There is no mantra as such we just tried to keep it simple. We did nothing extraordinary but of course we have got extraordinary players to deliver, especially Maxwell and some of the big hitters. As a group we know what are the demands to be fulfilled on a particular day. Definitely, we have got the momentum and how we take forward this momentum, is very important," he said.

Tendulkar had returned from the UAE, where IPL-7 is going on, according to sources close to him, and is celebrating his birthday with family and friends in the city. EW DELHI: India pocketed one silver and one bronze through Bajrang and Satywart Kadian in their respective men's freestyle categories on the second day of the Senior Asian Wrestling Championship in Astana, Kazakhstan. Bajrang won a silver in 61kg freestyle, while Kadian settled for a bronze in the 97kg freestyle. Bajrang, who had an otherwise fruitful day, faltered at the last hurdle as he proved no match to his Iranian opponent Masoud Esmaeilpour in the final and went down tamely 011 to be content with a secondplace finish. En route to the final, Bajrang had first defeated Noriyuki Takatsuka of Japan 7-4 in the quarterfinals and then followed it up with another excellent show in the last four stage, where he got the better of Nazmomdakh Lhamgarmaa of Mongolia 7-1. In 97kg men's freestyle, Kadian earned the bronze medal by beating Alihan Djumaev of Kazakhstan by criteria, 5-5. After being beaten

in the quarterfinals, Kadian managed to beat Chanuk Yoon of Korea 7-0 in the repechage round to enter the bronze medal round. However, in 70kg and 74kg men's freestyle, both the Indians in the fray failed to make the podium. Amit Kumar Dhakar lost out on a podium finish after losing 3-6 to Japan's Ken Hosaka in the bronze medal play-off in the 70kg freestyle. He had earlier thrashed Korea's Man ho Oh 7-0 in the quarterfinals before losing to Somirsho Vokhidov of Tajikistan 3-5 in the semifinals. He had scored 100 centuries during his international with Test matches accounting for 51 of those, the most by any batsman in the world.

rean Bae Yeon Ju in another match. Sindhu, who won the Malaysian Open and Macau Open besides the World Championship bronze last year, holds a 2-0 win record against Busanan. The Indian had beaten the Thai girl last at the All England Championships in 2013. In the men's singles, Gurusaidutt, ranked 38 in the world, bounced back after the opening game loss to edge out Chinese Taipei's Wang Tzu Wei 17-21 21-13 21-19. The Indian will take on Chinese qualifier Liu Kai today. Indian ace Parupalli Kashyap, however, went down fighting against Hsu Jen Hao of Chinese Taipei 25-23 21-17 in another hourlong match. In women's doubles competition, Commonwealth Games gold medallist pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta prevailed over third seeded Thailand combo of Aroonkesorn Duanganong and Voravichitchaikul Kunchala 21-11 21-18. The 2011 World Championship bronze medallists will next take on Malaysia's Anscelly Amelia Alicia and Soong Fie Cho. Guru showed a lot of grit and determination as he rallied to tire out his opponent before edging him out of contest in another one-hour match. "The shuttles were slow so I had to really play with lots of patience," Guru told PTI after the match. "After losing the first game, I was trailing 3-7 in the second but with the guidance of my coach (Madhumita Bist and Dwi Kristiawan) I managed to catch the shuttle up at the nets as I was going low till then. There were lots of rallies in the second and I could see him getting tired and I made sure that I go up to the net and not to repeat any strokes where he played from. That really helped me."

ADVANTAGE OVER BAYERN M www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, APRIL 25, 2014

ADRID: Real Madrid took a huge step towards their first Champions League final in 12 years as Karim Benzema's first-half goal gave them a 1-0 first-leg lead over holders Bayern Munich at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Frenchman was on hand to turn home Fabio Coentrao's cross on 19 minutes and Madrid's advantage could have been even greater had Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel di Maria not missed fine chances before the break. Bayern had the overwhelming majority of possession but failed to convert it into many sights of goal as Iker Casillas' save from Mario Goetze five minutes from time was the only significant stop the Spanish captain was forced into all evening. Defeat leaves the Germans with it all to do next Tuesday, if they are to continue their quest to become the first side to retain the trophy in the Champions League era. "We played with a lot of personality, we had a lot of possession we will have to improve in Munich, but I am very proud," said Bayern boss Pep Guardiola. "I have experience of how difficult it is to come here and play at the Bernabeu but I congratulate them because they won and if they own it is because they Real's Cristiano Ronaldo and Bayern's Jerome Boateng go for a header next to Bayern's Bastian Schweinsteiger, during a first leg semifinal Champions League played better." AIFF launches academy certification programme

NEW DELHI: All India Football Federation launched the 'AIFF Academy Certification' which aims to set a standard of Youth Development in the country through a certification model. AIFF has developed a set of criteria on which the academies will be assessed and certified and they will be given a rating as per the points gained by each academy on the criteria. The concept stays the brainchild and has been developed by AIFF's technical department. The certification criteria will primarily be based on coaching staff and qualifications, facilities, youth development and teams supported, training schedule, training sessions etc. "Certification of residential as well as non residential academies is part of our AIFF's Master Plan 'Lakshya'. It is the next milestone in the development of youth football in India. It will give the academy directors as well as their coaches a guideline of the level of coaching as well as the structure of the academy," Baan said.

have the combination of quality players and sacrifice that is all you can ask for." Ronaldo was returning after four games out with a hamstring injury as he replaced Gareth Bale, who had been suffering from flu in the days before the game, in the only change from the Real side that beat Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final last week. And after a bright early spell by Bayern, it was Madrid who created the clearer openings in the first-half. Real stung the Germans with a stunning counter-attack to open the scoring as Ronaldo's ball down the left for Coentrao was timed to perfection and the Portuguese full-back's low cross was tapped home at the back post by Benzema. Ronaldo missed a gilt-edged chance to make it 2-0 when another quick break caught Bayern hopping and the World Player of the Year blasted over Benzema's low cross from close range. Di Maria was next to go close as he latched onto a deep cross at the back post but wastefully volleyed over with just Neuer to beat. Real defender Sergio Ramos admitted Madrid knew they could catch Bayern on the break. "It is a good result to go to Munich with," he told Canal Plus. "It was a very hard game, we had to work so hard. They are a team with players of an incredible level and they like to dominate the ball, but we knew we could create danger on the counter-attack."

F1 boss Ecclestone’s bribery trial starts in Germany M

UNICH (GERMANY): Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone went on trial in Germany Thursday accused of bribery in a case which threatens a jail term for the Briton who has controlled the motor sport for four decades. Ecclestone, 83, has denies charges of bribery and abetting breach of trust over a $44 million (31.8 million euro) payment he made to former German banker Gerhard Gribkowsky, who has since been jailed. Prosecutors charge the money was a bribe meant to ensure the German bank BayernLB sold its shares in Formula One to Ecclestone's preferred bidder, CVC Capital Partners, to maintain his control over the sport. At the start of the Munich trial, watched by dozens of journalists, the diminutive Formula One magnate, wearing a dark suit, confirmed his name, date of birth, and occupation as Formula One manager. Ecclestone received a $66 million commission from Gribkowsky as part of the deal, then allegedly gave him back $44 million.
