ore than 2,000 nurses from state government run hospitals and medical colleges, including J.J., St. George, Cama and GT hospitals, plan to go on an indefinite strike from February 24, as they are tired of their demands not being looked into and fulfilled by the government. “This strike is for all nurses, especially those who are posted in rural hospitals, where even basic facilities are not available. Our demands are about decent pay, security and the availability of basic facilities in hospitals. We are not asking for anything out of the way,” said Kamal Vaykole, General Secretary, Maharashtra Government Nurses Federation. “We have waited enough for the government to do something for us, but nothing happens. This time, we decided that a step like this will shake the government,” said Anuradha Athavale, President, Maharashtra Government Nurses Federation. According to Ranjana Khandagle, sister-in-charge, J.J. Hospital, Byculla, patient care will be affected because of the strike. “There will be student nurses, but the absence of senior nurses will definitely be felt,” said Khandagle. am Aadmi Party (AAP) national executive leader Yogendra Yadav yesterday questioned the BJP and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi over their silence on what he alleged is a massive scam in the KG Basin gas reserve. Speaking to media persons here at AAP's Andheri office, he stated that normally the BJP, which is quick not to let go any opportunity, is now maintaining a deafening silence over the entire issue. The AAP leader maintained that the party had enormous evidence with it on the issue and termed the Bofors scam is small change when compared with this scam.

Adding to his statement, Maharashtra AAP leader Anjali Damania announced that the party will make an expose on Thursday on the electricity situation in Maharashtra. She claimed that several ministers and distribution companies are involved in the scam. Replying to queries over opposition from within the party to her candidature from Nagpur, she remarked that one Mohan Shivtare, who has made some allegations, is all alone and is linked to a pro-Hindutva organisation. “He is being propped up by the BJP. He is not even a member of the AAP. Nitin Gadkari is already feeling scared of the electoral battle ahead and is indulging in such acts,” she said. To which Yadav added that this Lok Sabha

hile schools had already declared a holiday on the occasion of Shiv Jayanti today, the education department sent a government resolution (GR) to all schools late in the evening yesterday, cancelling the holiday. The GR stated that schools should encourage students to attend classes and be a part of the traditional events. The department has asked schools to conduct events like drama, folk dances and singing signifying Shiv Jayanti. Uday Nare, senior teacher, Hansraj Morarji Public School, Andheri

said, “It is unfair and inappropriate to cancel the holiday at the last minute. How can schools set up and conduct events in just a matter of 12 hours? This day has always been a holiday and this cancellation has increased the work, resulting in confusion for school authorities.” The GR further stated that schools should conduct rallies and essay writing and elocution competitions themed around Shivaji. Dinkar Patil, Director General, Education department said, “The GR has been brought out as per the protocol and schools across the state will have to follow these instructions.”

election will be fought on national issue of corruption. “Nitin Gadkari is the symbol of corruption. And she (Damania) is the symbol of our fight against corruption. We had been constantly asking her to accept the offer of contesting from Nagpur,” added Yadav. Yadav arrived in the city to kickstart the party's 2014 Lok Sabha election campaign in Andheri today. Replying to queries over BJP's accusations of AAP making half promises and staging dharnas in Delhi, he stated that just like there is scrutiny of promises kept by AAP, one should also take stock of Modi’s promise of

t one time in our history, the bullock cart was the main form of transport for man and his produce. Horse carriages were reserved for the nobility, their armies, their hirelings, and some landowners. Even today, it is the main mode of conveyance in rural India. The wheels, all handcrafted from wood, right from axle to hub to spokes, are fascinating artifacts that can withstand the severest conditions of staggering weights on the most difficult of roads. The wheels on this page, courtesy our ace photographer, SUSHIL KADAM, are the magical output of a family that has been living in Panvel for over 300 years. Apart from heavy load-bearing carts, the family also creates sturdy chariots, doors, palkhis (palanquins), which are made against orders from far-off places like Assam, Karnataka, Gujarat, apart from cities like Pune, Satara, and elsewhere. Intricately carved and designed, they are recognised as works of art and are on display at JJ School of Art in Mumbai, and the Watchtower Museum in Dubai.

The matter is due for investigation and is subjudice, and here is a lady making defamatory statements with malafide intentions on social media about a victim. One can not malign or reveal the name of a victim in any form on any social, print or electronic media as per the new laws. The complainant, Vikram

Many persons called me up and began asking about the post, so I personally checked the Twitter account id@rajeshwariomatic and found out. Sources from Cyber Crime said, “We have received a complaint in writing against a Twitter activity and we will investigate the matter.” The Canadian actress had filed a case against Suhas Awchat, the owner of Goa Portuguesa, a restobar in Mahim, in which she alleged that he had sexually harassed her at his restaurant last Monday.

A.S. Gadkari had issued the notice while hearing a plea filed by former journalist Ketan Tirodkar and was allowed to amend his petition and include CBI as a respondent instead of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Tirodkar had argued that the high court had earlier handed over important murder cases to CBI such as the killing of RTI activist Satish Shetty and builder Amit Rane, both from Pune. The Pune police had informed the court that there was no evidence suggesting the involvement of right-wing extremists in the killing of Dabholkar. Lata Mangeshkar houses for people below poverty line on her land in Kolhapur. Mangeshkar denied allegations that she had violated conditions as stated by government, following which the court asked her to file a rejoinder within a fortnight. The matter has been posted for hearing after two weeks before a bench headed by Justice Abhay Oka. The court was hearing a petition filed by Mangeshkar challenging a notice issued to her on January 4 this year by a state body, saying that she had to obtain permission before selling immovable property on her land at Kolhapur, reports PTI. The government said in an

affidavit that the time limit to implement the housing scheme proposed by the singer was to end on July 2011. At her request, the state extended the time frame to October 2014. However, while extending the time limit, the state said that it had also penalised Mangeshkar by asking her to pay Rs 5 per square foot per year, from 2011 to 2014, on the underdeveloped land, but she chose not to pay, thus violating the condition. Her lawyer argued on yesterday that she had refused to comply with conditions since they were 'unreasonable'. He denied that the singer had "violated" them as alleged by the state. Thereupon, the court asked the lawyer to file a rejoinder within two weeks. The singer has sought quashing and setting aside the January 4 notice issued by the Competent Authority under the Urban Land Ceiling Act. Mangeshkar owns land admeasuring 38,623 square metres in Kolhapur and wanted to give it to Vikesh Oswal to develop residential and commercial tenements. However, Competent Authority under the Urban Land Ceiling (ULC) Act had declared that 23,889 square metres land is 'surplus'. Mangeshkar then proposed a scheme under section 20 of the ULC Act which was approved by the authorities on July 2, 2007. The scheme envisaged giving some houses to the government at subsided rates, but she did not execute the scheme, since the ULC Act was repealed in November 2007, her petition said.

or fulfilling its longpending promise, Congress-NCP government in Maharashtra would enact a new legislation to regularise slums that came up till the year 2000.The proposed draft will be cleared in the next cabinet meeting to be held this Sunday before the start of the budget session, sources told PTI. The issue was discussed in Tuesday's cabinet meeting, in which ministers spoke about the urgency of

implementing the electoral promise, as well as the cluster development policy. Congress MPs and MLAs have met Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan during the weekend and demanded that party's interests in Mumbai have to be safeguarded at any cost. They also lamented over the delay in fulfilling the election promise. Sources said that pending issues regarding Mumbai, including power tariff, are likely to be taken up in the next cabinet.

Maharashtra to implement river conservation scheme By A Staff Reporter

n view of growing urbanisation and industrialisation, Maharashtra government will implement a river conservation scheme, under which sewage water will be treated for reuse in industry and agriculture. The scheme will be implemented in class 'D' municipal corporations, councils and villages with population up to 15,000 that are situated along the rivers, reports PTI. According to officials, urbanisation and industrialisation are adversely affecting the water sources. 70 per cent pollution in rivers is because of sewageand 30 per cent because of industrial effluents. The scheme will focus on curbing pollution in rivers and improving the quality of river water, besides identifying polluting belts. Reli-

gious, historic and important sites will be given priority.

Bonus on paddy Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal to provide bonus of Rs 200 per quintal over and above the minimum support price (MSP) fixed by the Centre for paddy during the kharif season 2013-14. The MSP for paddy procured in 2013-14 is Rs.1,310 and for 'A' grade paddy, the MSP is Rs 1,345. The state government will give additional Rs.200 per quintal. "The state exchequer will bear burden of Rs.70 crore," officials told PTI. According to them, excessive and unpredictable rains, wide gap in crop procurement rate and production costs have prompted the decision.

Social activists and criminal lawyers believe that the state government and Home Department's decision to extend actor Sanjay Dutt's parole shows partiality

By Zuber Ansari

fter Sanjay Dutt's parole was extended by one more month yesterday, several social activists and criminal lawyers have alleged that the state governement and Home Department are being partial to the actor, who is also the brother of Congress MP Priya Dutt. Dutt's parole was extended on Tuesday afternoon, after the Mumbai Police received a medical report stating that Dutt's wife, Manyata, was unwell. Dutt was supposed to go back to Yerwada Jail in Pune on February 21. However, the actor's request for an extension was approved yet again, making this the third time from December. Dutt had earlier secured parole on December 21, 2013 which was extended to February 21, as Manyata was to undergo a surgery. This time, Dutt requested the parole to be extended for another month, so that he could be by his wife's side while she is recovering. Manyata was reportedly suffering from multiple ailments of the heart

''The state government's order that Dutt be granted parole shows that preferential treatment is being given to him. The other accused in the same case are not so lucky. The parole application of Zaibunnisa Kazi, a 65-yearold woman who has been convicted with Dutt in the same case, is still pending with the Home Ministry for the last two weeks. The state government's procedure in granting parole to convicts has tones of partiality.” Apart from parole on the grounds of his wife's sickSanjay Dutt ness, the actor had taken his first parole for two weeks in and liver and was admitted to October as he had fallen sick, Global Hospital in Parel in which was extended by 15 January. days. Replying to queries over corporate funding of elections and their targeting certain business houses, he said that the party was not against all business houses in the country. Yadav said that his party was against crony capitalism which gave rise to private monopolies. Earlier, he argued that the BJP, which was trying to offer another al-

ternative to the Congress, was in fact a product of the same governance model which in the last 15 to 20 years has resulted in corruption and loot and is just another face of the same political system. Yadav added that the AAP was not trying to offer a substitute, but an alternative to the present set up. Yadav felt that the 2014 Lok Sabha elections will centre around corruption, communalism and dynastic politics. He added that the party was not interested in occupying the seat of power and that their ultimate goal was to attain Swaraj.

Ponder awhile… “An ounce of performance is worth pounds of promises.” — Mae West

One track objective of Cong: To get 16 T seats N

ever before in the history of parliament a bill was passed in the way it was yesterday. The bill was passed behind closed doors of the parliament. The Lok Sabha Live TV and other channels were closed, an important bill like the Telangana bill was passed by voice vote amidst uproar. Amendments were not taken up as they should as per parliament rules. While some small parties like Trinamool, JD(U) walked out, the Samajwadi Party and the BSP stayed in the House. The BJP supported the bill but it said, it should have been passed in a more democratic manner. The Congress is claiming complete credit for the passing of the bill. Home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde who moved the bill was all praise for the effort to create Telangana. The Congress perhaps hopes to get all the 16 Lok Sabha seats from the region. The BJP has seen through Congress game and it is proposing to support some amendments like the one on the future of Hyderabad in the Rajya Sabha. If it can get the amendment accepted, the bill has to come back again to the Lok Sabha. While there is great celebration in Telangana, there is likely to be a bandh in Andhra Pradesh. Jagmohan Reddy who has called for a bandh tomorrow is not likely to accept the arrangement, but will launch a statewide agitation. The chief minister of Andhra Pradesh will resign today. The Congress MPs and MLAs are expected to meet and decide on future action, What is certain then is likely widespread violence and unrest both in Telangana and Seemandhra regions. Hyderabad could be the centre of violence: there is likely to be continuing clashes between Telangana and Seemandhra groups. There was no need for rushing the bill. There should have been more consultations, peaceful persuasions. The Centre should have taken both the Seemandhra and Telangana groups on board and produced a solution. Obviously, the Congress government at the Centre did not do it: It had a one-track objective: To grab those 16 seats in the Lok Sabha elections – from Telangana.

T

HE ground seems to be shifting dangerously under both the Congress and the CPI(M) in Kerala as elections approach. In the Congress, there’s a full-scale rebellion on and it’s led by none other than chief minister Oommen Chandy. He is so upset over the foisting of Rahul Gandhi’s handpicked man V.M. Sudheeran as state unit president that he didn’t bother to extend the usual courtesies to Sonia Gandhi when she flew to Kochi last week for a party convention. He did what no Congress CM has dared to do: he didn’t receive Sonia at the airport, nor did he send word by way of an apology for his absence. To make matters worse, word has reached the Congress high command that Chandy met Narendra Modi when the BJP prime ministerial candidate visited Kerala to address a rally recently. It wasn’t a private meeting. The local BJP unit hosted a reception for Modi and Chandy attended it. But his presence has set tongues wagging in Congress circles which see his actions as a precursor to a possible revolt. Are the rats getting ready to desert a sinking ship? There’s trouble brewing in the Left as well. Aam Aadmi Party is wooing former chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan in a determined manner. The elderly leader, who is known for scrupulous honesty, has been a disgruntled comrade ever since he lost the battle against Pinayari Vijayan, implicated in the Lavalin corruption scandal. According to reports, AAP leader Prashant Bhushan is trying hard to get Achuthanandan to join his party. General political wisdom says that if Achuthanandan does dump the Left in favour of AAP, political equations in Kerala will change dramatically. AAP has already made inroads in the state, winning over well known women’s rights activist Mary Roy and several environmentalists. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal’s book, Swaraj, is said to be a runaway hit. Its Malayalam edition is twice sold out and heading for a third print. Is Kerala poised for paradigm change in its Left and Congress led bipolar polity?

in the Capital last week provided fodder for much chatter on social media and in drawing rooms. The book, authored by Sameer Kochchar, was a eulogy to Modi’s Gujarat model with the title ``Modinomics: Inclusive Economics, Inclusive Governance’’. Everything was set for the launch and given Modi’s high threat perception, the venue was sealed off from early in the morning, causing huge inconvenience to all varieties of visitors. Just before the function was due to start, word came that Modi would not attend. Apparently, his backroom boys made a last-

POWER TALK Arati R. Jerath minute discovery that in 2013, Kochchar had written a book in praise of finance minister P. Chidambaram, entitled 'Agenda for Growth: Essays in Honour of P Chidambaram'. The book was even released by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in July that year. To make matters worse, his book on Modi drew comparisons between the Gujarat CM to Chidambaram, all favourable of course, but Modi certainly doesn’t want to be put in the same box as Manmohan Singh’s finance minister. It’s not just a question of Congress versus BJP. Modi believes he stands in a category quite apart from the rest.

Yogendra Yadav's smart choice

AAP ideologue and strategist Yogendra Yadav may be a political rookie but he’s a highly experienced psephologist who’s done countless election opinion polls. He has chosen his constituency for the 2014 Lok Sabha election with great care. The seat is Gurgaon in Haryana and it is said to be a sure-fire winning seat for Yadav. Apparently, Gurgaon has the highest number of AAP members. The enrolment figure stands at around 1.5 lakh. With each member capable of pulling in at least two to three votes, Yadav starts out with a base of around ITH cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin 4 lakh. This is even better than what a BSP abandoning Moradabad in UP for a candidate brings in UP. If he manages to pull JP prime ministerial candidate Narendra safer Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal, it seems off a victory, Yadav will be an interesting adModi’s no-show at a book release function actor Jaya Prada has put in her claim for the dition to the Lok Sabha.

It seems the Telegu star is all set to join the Congress in a deal brokered by her mentor and former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh. Prada had hitched her star to Amar Singh’s wagon when the SP expelled him. She quit the party and has been waiting for Amar Singh to negotiate her political rehabilitation somewhere. Given the Congress party’s downslide in UP, political circles are surprised by Prada’s brave move to fight on its ticket. Apparently, the calculation is that she will be one of the two Hindu nominees for the seat, the other being the BJP candidate. The BSP and SP will field Muslims. And since she feels that she enjoys a good image among Muslims, she is hoping that Hindus plus Muslims will help her past the finishing post. Azharuddin is not the only sitting Congress MP who wants to switch his constituency. Raj Babbar, who won from Firozabad in UP by defeating Akhilesh Yadav’s wife, Dimple, in a bye-election, is also on the lookout for a safe seat. His victory was a fluke in the flush of a Congress wave in UP in 2009. This time, he knows he won’t be so lucky. He is said to be eyeing Ghaziabad which BJP president Rajnath Singh is fleeing. Rajnath is wanting to contest from Lucknow but fears a Muslim consolidation against him.

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2014

How can the CP protect every child? I refer to the front page edit by Ms. Andrade (17th Feb.), addressed to the new Commissioner of Police. She speaks of the spate of crimes against women and young children, and concludes that preventing them is a police matter ... “The Mumbai police can do it ..." Unfortunately she has fallen into the trap of 'mindless thinking' that is a common plague. How does the police prevent a child being molested by a trusted family member/ friend? By posting a policeman 24 hours in every household with a young girl? How does the police prevent a child being molested by the school bus driver/ cleaner? By posting a policeman in every school bus that runs? I think it fitting that at least a person in a position to shape public thought should -nay, must think carefully before publishing. The solution does not, and cannot, lie with the police. (Inciden-

DISTURBING FACT: Preventing crimes against women, children is a police matter. tally, to forestall another unthinking argument, neither can the blame be laid at the door of Indian cinema, since these things happen all over the world, not just in India.) The solution can only lie with the parents ... teach your child that

THIS refers to 'McCullum's rearguard ton keeps NZ afloat' (ADC, Feb 17). Is M.S. Dhoni destined to be the 'eternal bridesmaid', with nothing to show, on foreign turf? It is more likely now, except for a miracle, from the Indian batsmen. Dhoni needs to understand that 'being pro-active' in a Test match, does not mean that he has to frequently change fielding positions. He seems to suffer from a hangover of the shorter versions of the game. He compounds these mistakes by taking very arbitrary decisions, as there is nobody to question him. Does Dhoni have any sane explanation for handing over his wicket keeper's gloves to Kohli, and deciding to bowl just one over, when the McCullum-Watlin partnership was worth almost 350 runs? If Dhoni had fancied himself to break that mammoth partnership, and become a hero; he should have bowled at least a couple of overs more. This silly action showed that he was a totally confused man, being theatrical, at a crucial juncture of the match! — Chandramohan, Ghatkopar

Maria is the right choice APROPOS 'CM had cleared Maria's appointment on Jan 20 ' (ADC , Feb 17), it is indeed a great relief to learn that after more than a fortnight long state political drama, the city police force is provided with its head. Maria, a Xaverian of St. Xavier's College, Mumbai is an IPS of 1981 batch and he enjoys the credit of solving certain critical problems during the 1993 serial blasts followed by 2003 in the Gateway and Zaveri Bazar blasts and then of the 2008, 26/11 gruelling terror attacks of the Taj Hotel and the CST. He is now saddled with mainly restricting the crimes committed on women in the streets and ensuring the general safety of the public at large. In a short while from now, he has to shoulder the huge responsibility of observing a trouble free Lok Sabha election , which is already turning to be exciting and hot. However, the Mumbaikars need to co-operate as well with the police force to render their presence to be effective. Mumbai police needs to safeguard all the passengers arriving from out station -- both domestic and from overseas at any time, especially in the wee hours when the culprits are on the prowl.

good post for fly swatting. And the DG of the Security Corporation. Does the media even know where his office is? What is his staff strength? THE media has reported that two police officers have gone on leave as they are unhappy with their postings and even promotion. In the army such officers would be court martialled. Javed Ahmed has been promoted as a DGP. The first question that arises is – will the rank badges that he wears on his shoulders change? If not then what is the nature of promotion? Can people in different grades wear the same rank badges? Isn’t this absurd? The police have made nonsense of rank badges. In fact civil services like the police should not be allowed to have the same rank badges as the army. The next question is – does the Maharashtra Police require people of DGP rank to be in charge of Home Guards? In fact there is a DG and also an Additional DG! And after that not a single IPS officer or even a police sub-inspector! All the Home “Guards” are factory workers and other government employees. It is a

must be the weakest in the world and bowling well in patches is not going to win you matches at the international level. Our team looked tired and fatigued as too much cricket is affecting our boys as they go through the motions without any motivation. Cricketers are not robots and our cricket board should not be penny wise and pound foolish and overwork our players at the expense of performance. Well played New Zealand and one could gauge the zest in their feet as they looked fresh and lively on the field as this country must be playing the least number of games in a calendar year compared to other international sides. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

TEAM India is the best available team if an international batsman is out of form and needs a big score to boost his morale. Likewise, for a debutant Team India is the best side to strike form from the word go. And again, Team India bowlers generally see that the opposition team wicket keeper should be made to score good runs on the way to recovery of their side. New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum struck a second double century in successive tests to take his side to safety at the end of the fourth day of the second test against India at Wellington's Basin Reserve.. McCullum was on 281, his highest test score and the second highest by a New Zealander, at the

Chidambaram at his very best THIS refers to your edit-piece 'A budget before Lok Sabha poll' (ADC, Feb 18) which is a comprehensive, objective review of the UPA government's last budget and you have been, mercifully, not too critical of it. Our finance minister, P. Chidambaram, is arguably the best in the business and his preamble to the media persons during his interaction with them was the best in some 50 years -- professorial in a way, couched in excellent English, without any fumbling for words or figures. It needs to be appreciated that he is not a performer wielding a magic wand and is obliged to operate within his constraints. The rate of our growth did indeed touch 8.2 not long ago and is pickling up after sliding somewhat. He is optimistic of our economy moving to the third place after US and China and that is something to be happy about. All in all, an impressive presentation, notwithstanding the opposition's expected criticism. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

THE interim budget tabled by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram proposes cheaper automobiles. This will lead to import of a large number of foreign made cars on the roads all across India, resulting into not only long traffic jams,

close of play after having shared a world record stand for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper BJ Watling who was dismissed for 124 in the third over after tea. Debutant Jimmy Neesham was on 67 at the close of play with the hosts on 571 for six, a lead of 325 runs and seemingly in a position where they cannot lose the match and series with a day's play remaining. . Both Brendon McCullum and Walting played as wicket keepers and shone well with the bat when the chips were down. — C.K. Ramani, Sion

PLAYING in overseas conditions pose too many problems for Team India and the team management should be up to the task and prepare themselves well before disembarking a foreign tour. Team India took things rather lightly and paid price for it in the last four overseas tours. We could not match the wits of the home team on tour and with the result we could not win a single game in the last two tours. It is a matter of great concern for the cricketing fraternity in India but the officials of the Board are not bothered much about the poor standard of the game in India and worry more about the IPL season commencing in April. Thus we are on the back foot most of the time on tour and when we get a right opportunity we bungle it with poor display of team work. Having watched Indian cricket for the last 50 years and witnessed the matches live from the stadiums all over India, I feel that the old weakness continues to haunt the side and it is very difficult to come out of the rut in the next few years. To top it all, the World Cup win in April 2011, changed our out cricket too much and reached a stage of non-performance without scope for improvement. — Jayanthy S. Maniam, Sion

across our nation for their own unknown fears. Finally, the provision for the food security is a prepoll bribe offered by the corrupt party, of course for votes. But all cannot be fooled all the time. — Hansraj Bhat, Borivali

EXCELLENT: Our finance minister P. Chidambaram is arguably the best in the business. but also unbearable air pollution. The proposal of cheaper cars and trucks with reduced excise duty will reduce India’s foreign exchange balance adversely, to a great extent. This proposal gives the pro-foreign economic policies of this government, as usual. The 10 per cent hike in the defence expenses is of no use, because our rulers have an anti-national habit since long to demoralise the security forces’ exemplary courage by tying their hands, and not giving free, iron hand against the untrustworthy Pakistan-backed terror attacks all

AS reported, the budget is announced which is rather more of a routine customary and mandatory exercise, retrospectively speaking, without any efficient or serious steps to give fillip, energy and life to our national economy, control inflation and go for better living of citizens. In fact, the budget has lost its importance and value. Economists and politicians will as usual praise it as a wonderful and growth oriented budget. The aam admi would like to question if it was such a good budget then why it was not implemented earlier and if economists or politicians are sure of success of the budget will they they take complete responsibility for their failure and commit harakiri otherwise. Policies, rates and taxes change and increase at any part of year or rather several times a year. Retrospectively speaking, the budget as usual will be very defective and not growth oriented. There will be deficit financing due to faulty planning, corrupt, ineffcient and incompetent government. — S.P. Sharma, Mumbai

Economics isn’t a subject that is restricted to the boundaries of a classroom, but is rather a field that encompasses everything and everyone without any exceptions. Reports Sharada Iyer

W

hen one thinks of economics, there are a lot of explanations that can be found to describe the subject. But many a times, quite of a few of these explanations turn out to be quite vague masking the subject’s significance and its relevance. Despite this, it’s an important subject with its fundamentals taught right at the school level. Economics still retains its aura of mystery, making it a very interesting subject to explore and understand. Contrary to many common perceptions and beliefs, economics isn’t a subject that is restricted to the boundaries of a classroom. But rather is a field that encompasses everything and everyone without any exceptions. Though defined as a social

sary in the global domain, calling economics as ‘household management’ isn’t misplaced at all. Thus, Professor Bhatt adds, learning economics provides individuals with the fundamental knowledge and understanding of how to balance available resources. “From scientists to laymen, economics influences everyone. At the end of the day, it can be summed up that anyone who learns and studies economics can guide the entire state”, he explains. The aspect of guiding or leading an entire state comes under the branch of economics commonly termed as ‘macro economics’ while the simple concepts of demand and supply are outlined in the various ‘micro economic’ theories. In the large educational framework in academic curricula in colleges, students get to learn both concepts with more emphasis laid on the former as compared to the latter.

science, economics essentially is a science that determines societies’ way of life. To put it more simplistically, economics is essential for the smooth functioning of day-to-day life. As Professor Nitin Bhatt puts it, “Economics is technically not just a subject, but a way of life. It tells us how to manage our unlimited wants with limited means. Its existence goes back to the earliest days of evolution of society. As such economics is also household management”. Considering that economics is as relevant in the domain of household affairs as much as it is neces-

Alongside these more conventional economic concepts taught in colleges, econometrics is another aspect that is gaining a strong foothold in the educational paradigm. Econometrics combines economics with knowledge of mathematics and statistical components providing an education for those interested in taking up careers in data analyses not only in multinational companies, but also in leading banking institutions. While there is no restriction on anyone who’s interested in the subject to specialise in it, there’s no denying that those with an intuitive and logical bent of mind will find the subject easier. “Economics is also a science of reasoning. Thus, anyone who’s good at logical reasoning can and should opt for economics as a stream of education and career specialisation”, adds Professor Bhatt. In terms of career opportunities available, individuals have a lot of options to choose like teaching, working in financial and corporate institutions and even engaging in advisory positions to leading corporate and commercial establishments after completing their Masters or Doctorate in economics.

WANT TO DO AN MBA IN IT

Dear madam, I am working in the IT field while I have graduated in Commerce. I am doing a certificate course in IT. Is it possible for me to now do an MBA in IT? —Virendra S. You are eligible to study management and specialise either in IT or Systems. You can either study as a two-year full time/correspondence course or three-year parttime after having two years of work experience. If you have secured at least 50 per cent in your Graduation, cleared the entrance exam as well as the selection process, your chances of getting selected for the course would be higher. For more details please log on to www.dte.org.in I am studying in FYJC Commerce and want to do something in IT. Can you tell me about the available courses and the required qualifications? —Dilip Goud To enter the IT field, you can take admission for BSc-IT [if you have taken Maths] after class XII or can enroll yourself in a private computer institute for any software related course or enroll for Microsoft certified courses. You can pursue any of these courses simultaneously with your Graduation. I’m studying in Class XI. Is Maths necessary if I wish to pursue Culinary Arts or Hotel Management after my HSC? Will SP suffice? —Herukh Shahani You need not study Maths at your 10+2 level for seeking admission to Culinary Arts, Hotel Management. I am in TY Bsc. Zoology. Where can I work after graduation? What can I post graduate in? I am interested in doing my post graduation in computer science (Bio-informatics). - Salim Sheikh

BSc Zoology indeed is a specific field and hence majorly opens up opportunities in Research, Analysis, Teaching, Wildlife management, Pet parlors, Pet trainers and so on. You may have to do relevant masters in the fields mentioned above for gaining in-depth knowledge. There are several institutes that offer Masters/PG Diploma course in Bio-informatics you can chose to opt for a shorter duration course in case time and money are constraints. All the best. Economics doesn’t get the credit it deserves Continued from pg 13 « Despite these myriad career choices, most of them extending in the financial sector, it’s very surprising that economics doesn’t get the credit that it deserves. Prof. Bhatt explains that this is mainly because the commercial value of the field hasn’t been exploited at its depth. “Economics may be connected to the financial sector, but on the whole because it’s not directly related to the other prevalent money-related professions, very few individuals take up economics as a first choice of specialisation. Once the field’s commercial significance is realised and felt, it will undoubtedly find more takers”, he concludes.

ENERGY ECONOMICS

Dr. Deepak Sivaraman, Research Fellow, University of California Energy economics analyses the demand and supply of energy. An energy economic framework thus helps to monetise environmental emissions from energy generation and determine the true cost of energy generation. Energy economics is a very important field applicable and necessary in all countries in the world. It basically includes interdisciplinary subjects of economics and energy and people interested in taking up energy economics need to have educational backgrounds in maths and engineering alongside economics.”

« STUDYING ABROAD

I am interested in applying for a Masters in Management Information Systems in the US. What are the top schools and what are the admission criteria? —Neha The MS-MIS is a specialized degree that prepares a student for a career in information management in roles such as software developer, information technology manager and business process analyst. The program integrates information systems foundation with appropriate business skills. The primary criteria for admission are high undergraduate

GPA (minimum 3.0) and a high GRE/GMAT score. Some universities prefer candidates with relevant work experience. The personal statement and letters of recommendation from professors or employers are also taken into consideration during evaluation. The top few programs are at University of CaliforniaBerkeley, Texas A&M University, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Maryland and George Washington University.

“What should one include in their portfolio when applying to undergraduate art schools abroad?” Every school abroad has its own unique set of requirements, so make sure to first research each school’s requirement in detail before putting together your portfolio. It is very important to create original work from direct observation; this means that you should not copy your work from photographs or other paintings. Having a variety of subject matter demonstrates a willingness and interest to work with different topics like self-por-

Top schools like RISD, SCAD, CSM all look for originality and a keen eye for detail in prospective portfolios.

I am a second year BMS student starting to think about my post-graduate studies. I am confused about whether I should do a Masters or an MBA. What is the difference in job prospects, requirements, and type of program? —Poonam The most relevant Masters programs for you are in Finance, Strategy, HR, Marketing, or Management and these exist mostly in the UK. The US does not have many Masters Programs in these fields – instead, most US students interested in business end up doing an MBA. You need at most a year’s work experience to apply to a Masters, and you could also apply to go straight after your undergraduate program, whereas an MBA requires a minimum of two years work experience, with 3-4 years being the average. Also, Masters programs are generally one year

long, whereas most MBA programs are two years long, though there are a few exceptions. An MBA generally offers better job prospects and trains you for a variety of business roles, whereas in a Masters, you’ll specialize in a particular aspect of business like HR or Marketing, which can limit the types of jobs available.

GEMOLOGY A COLOURFUL CAREER

he magical gems portray the colourful elements of nature; yellow sapphire resembles the sizzling sun, emerald - the verdant greenery, turquoise - the rippling ocean, ruby – colours of the rainbow and diamond the twinkling stars in the sky. These precious stones have a great value in Indian civilization. Both precious and semi-precious gems are a rage in our country. The art and profession of finding, evaluating and processing gemstones is known as gemology. Gemology has become a booming career option in India. Every customer, now-a-days seeks for genuine quality stones and this has escalated the demand for Gemologists. Right from designing, research to owning a jewellery shop, a gemologist can explore various career options in this field. From the time of kings and queens this was considered as a favourite pastime, although knowing the fact that, only the rich could afford them. It is also believed that certain kinds of gemstones can influence our behaviour and our fate as they believed to possess some magical powers. So, the profession of gemology has been in existence, albeit unofficially, since so long. When a precious gem moves from a mine to a brightly lit jewellery store in a local town, a gemologist plays a role each step of the way. Gemologists not only identify the flaws and qualities of gems, but they also buy and sell gems for stores and help customers pick out the stones that are best for them. So one can say that gems are an important part of Indian culture and they are also looked upon as symbols of power and prosperity. Nothing much has changed as far as the utility of these precious materials goes. However, the art of finding gemstones, grading, evaluating them and processing them for the end user has changed radically. Now-a-days everyone seeks quality assurance and the gems industry is no different. The owners want to posses the best of gems to showcase it to their prospective buyers or retailers. The retailers on their part want to give the best to the customers and outdo other competitors. Finally, the end-user also wants genuine and high quality gems and gem encrusted jewellery for personal use. To be an accredited gemologist, one needs to have adequate knowledge of minerals and other organic materials

such as amber, corals and pearls that are used in jewellery making to be able to distinguish natural gemstone from the fake one. People who want to be gemologists, should have a discerning eye so that one can identify even the minutest of changes in the constitution of different gemstones to

grade them and evaluate their price is thus an important prerequisite. Also, one must be prepared to work for long hours in gemological laboratories and units where cutting and polishing or treatment of gems takes place. Good handeye coordination, patience and concentration are required in great measures because the work is precise and delicate in nature. A course in gemology covers various aspects like occurrence of the stones, its identification and colouring, design methodology, ornament making and understanding physical and optical properties of the stones along with various metallurgical processes. To take up a short-term certificate or diploma in any gemology related study programme you must have completed your schooling or 10+2 level and must be at least 18 years old. These courses provide basic information regarding the identification of different gemstones. Also, principles of evaluating and grading cut gems are a part of these

study programmes. Some of these short-term courses are: Gem Identification Certificate course, Diamond Grading Certificate course, Certificate course in Cut Design and Analysis, Pearl Grading, Polished Diamond Grading course. Apart from these short-term courses, you can go for a diploma in gemology. The duration of these study programmes can range from anywhere between nine weeks to one-year. The curriculum of these programmes incorporates the study of various techniques and instruments that are used in the gemological industry. These courses also provide you with hands on experience on gemological related tools and instruments by way of practical tests. Good communication skills, ample knowledge of technological advancements in this field and

The art and profession of finding, evaluating and processing gemstones has of late become a booming career option in India exposure as well as experience. The earnings of a gemologist usually vary, depending on expertise and the organisation working with. Self-employed gemologists can earn much more, again based on their skill and marketing capabilities. A gemologist can earn Rs.2.5 to3 lakh per year as starting salary. So a career as a gemologist is a great choice for individuals interested in a variety of gemstones that are natural or synthetic. Gemologists must have good hand and finger dexterity, patience, good eye-hand co-ordination, and

be a DJ at night. Party and study was my mantra. I feel that the Delhi crowd is a party in itself. I had my favorite eating, meeting, and socialising places and my college canteen and Saket PVR Delhi were our favorite joints. Food Point and Lake City Walk were fun places to be at with friends. My friend circle consisted of 18 people, thirteen boys and five girls. The jokes, pranks, joys, fun, sorrows and childish issues we shared, were all a part of my college life, making it more like a picnic. One gets emotionally mature in college as there is lot of independence and responsibility. Yes, I had my share of pranks. I was a very shy person. In my second year, I noticed a girl and I was attracted towards her. My friends actually dared her to ask me out. I couldn’t answer as I really liked her, but she was just doing it as a challenge. Whatever one does in college one should not cross the limits. Conversations and friendships are an important part of college life. I am an MBA and it gives me a secure life. I can work in the corporate section whenever I feel the need to. Education polishes a person. I have knowledge of managing many aspects of my life because of my business education. Education opens so many doors to the real world, and with so much of insecurity and unpredictability it helps to be educated. One must have alternate career options in mind. It had good infrastructure for cultural activities, ample space, good facilities and a homely atmosphere. The spunk and liveliness was perfect. I feel nostalgic when I think about college because of all the memories associated with it. The first day of college was very good. Since I was a kid, I was eagerly waiting for college life. I had started working out to look good and had grown my hair to look like the college hunk. I portrayed myself to be a very stylish person. I was a DJ, and thus was considered quite cool. I used to like every pretty girl around me, and my buddies would pull my leg saying that I fall in love all the time. I wanted to be the hero and be liked by all. It was so much fun. I was not ragged; I already had friends and a very strong personality. I ragged people, but obviously, it was all healthy. Ragging should be just an introduction and extreme ragging should be avoided. College life is for growing up and learning. One must have good memories associated with college and not bad ones. ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) EXAM REGISTRATIONS OPEN

High School students throughout India can now register for College Board’s Advanced Placement® (AP®) Exams in 22 different subjects. AP Exams are scheduled for May 5-16, 2014, and the deadline for registration is March 26, 2014. The AP Exams are securely administered at authorized USIEF centres and schools in 11 cities across India – Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Rajkot. The test centre in Mumbai is US-India Education Foundation (USIEF). The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) enables motivated students to pursue universitylevel studies while still in high school. Indian students thinking of heading to the U.S., Canada, UK, Australia, Singapore or other countries for undergraduate studies are eligible to receive university credit or consideration in the admissions process for qualifying AP Exam scores. In 2013, 2.2 million students took approximately 4 million AP Exams worldwide, and sent scores to over 3,300 universities in more than 60 countries. Taking AP courses help students stand out in the college admissions process, by demonstrating to admission officers that the student has sought the most rigorous curriculum available to him/her. Students with successful AP scores (defined as a score of 3 or higher on the 5-point AP Exams scale) also have the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both at a majority of colleges and universities. This can enable them to move into upper-level courses sooner,

pursue a double major, graduate early, and save on tuition and fees. In addition, students who earn qualifying scores on their AP Exams can earn academic scholarships and awards. AP courses and exams also help students to develop the critical thinking, reasoning and communication skills that are essential for college success Research indicates that students who score a 3 or higher on an AP Exam typically experience greater overall academic success in college. Many universities across the U.S. offer credit, advanced placement or both in one or more subjects for qualifying AP Exam scores. Additionally, nearly all leading universities in Canada and UK recognize AP for admission, credit or placement, as do many European universities. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) also grants equivalence certificates to students taking AP courses and exams as part of their high school diploma requirement, to help them enroll in a bachelor’s degree program in India. Students can learn more about AP in India, including the exam schedule, exam fee, exam centers and how to register and prepare for AP, at www.ap-india.org.

India is internationally accalimed for its cultural heritage, but there indegenous art is neglected. While Western culture continues to sway the children and youth, there is a fraction that is completely dedicated to classical art and culture. In an interview with Dr. Sanddhya Pureccha, renowned Bharata Natyam exponent, teacher, scholar and choreographer, and the principal of Bharata College of Fine Arts and Culture, Vijay Shanker throws light on the relevance and significance of dance education, performances, workshops for the underprivelged, and pursuing classical dancing as a career. I was enrolled as a student, started learning folk dance under the guidance of Purav sir, and was later introduced to the veteran Acharya Parvati Kumar.

« INTERVIEW

At what age should a student learn classical dance? The ideal age is four or five, because a minimum of 10 years is necessary to learn classical texts like the Natyasastra and the complete 'margam' for a full fledged performance. Initially, it is painful, but one should be able to deal with the pain. Once you pass through that phase, it is sheer joy. Classical dance is completely different from break dancing or ballet. It is the expression of the soul, wherein various bodily movements are used to portray a story from Hindu mythology to reach out to the supreme. There is no short cut

tudents from eight city schools participated in a unique children’s film festival ‘FilmIt’ – an international collaborative project organised by INTACH and the Helen Hamlyn Trust (UK) in the country. Thanks to this initiative, children from Bombay Scottish (Mahim), Lilavati Podar, Arya Vidya Mandir (Bandra West), Arya Vidya Mandir (Bandra East), Arya Vidya Mandir (Juhu), Nalanda Foundation, Podar International and Municipal School (Byculla) got a chance to make short movies and learn about the importance of preserving local heritage in a fun and educative way. Each school was provided with a video camera and the training to make the films. The Mumbai chapter had students make films on a diverse range of topics right from the Shivaji Park Gymkhana, Khotachiwadi and the David Sassoon Library etc. Each school made a minimum of five movies which were uploaded and shown to students in the UK in an attempt to promote cross-

cultural understanding, awareness and respect. Not only did students get a chance to learn about film-making but also an opportunity to share their ideas and views with other children. Filmit was initiated in 2008 with schools participating from Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Goa, Mumbai, Chandigarh and Chennai. Every year they have a different theme and primarily focus on creating heritage awareness. This year’s theme was caring for animals and around 60 films were made by students from Mumbai schools alone. Mumbai schools are participating for the second time, with an additional four schools joining in the fest this year. What’s interesting to know is that the fest has a mix of public and private schools participating giving both set of students a new and different perspective and a chance to engage and share their ideas. The organisers hope to slowly expand and include more schools, as per the available funding.

“FilmIt is all about creating heritage awareness. If we are to make a difference we need to look at it from their (children’s) perspective. By giving them something they like, like a video camera, we are actually making them realise that old is gold,” said Purnima Datt, Principal Director, Heritage Education and Communication Service, INTACH. The young film-makers were recognised with certificates at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in this non-competitive festival recently. The movies have made an impact not only on the children from the different schools who viewed them but have gone on to receive international recognition as well. Some of the movies received awards at the International Children’s Film Festival held in Hyderabad in November last year. A film made by Nigam Pratibha School (Chaukhandi Delhi) called ‘Phoolwati Amma’ was also awarded as the second best movie made by Little Directors across the world.

The Indian bowlers haven’t found their length in New Zealand. This is because they haven’t got the opportunity to acclimatize to the conditions. One of the main reasons for this is the back-to-back tournaments they are playing throughout the year. Hence, by the time Shami and Ishant were getting in to the groove, the second test got underway. It is high time that we have a set of bowlers who don’t suffer from fatigue. Also, the inexperienced in the attack was evident despite Zaheer Khan’s presence. —Rajendra Pareek, Sales Manager

I feel that Dhoni should take stock of the situation and admit in public that there is a lacunae in the bowling attack. Also, since the world cup is being playing in Australia and New Zealand next year, this was the best practice the Indian team could have got. However, it seemed they failed on all ends – whether it was with the bat or ball, if they below par, he should admit and not cover up. —Sherman Melroy, Executive

India, at the moment, is at a stage where they are planning a new team. Every team has a phase like this when you lose most of your home and away matches. While we have done well at home, the concern remains about the away matches. India were caught on the wrong foot and lost their test ranking in South Africa, and here in New Zealand they weren’t effective either. However, the surprise was Ishant Sharma, who was among the wickets as compared to his earlier tours. Overall, I didn’t quite relate to his comments and defending his players. I’m sure this was to protect them from the media glare but I’m sure in the dressing room he must have spoken his mind. —Narender Yadav, Sales Executive

years. On top of this, the company has been asked to give bank guarantees equal to the incremental price it will get from April 1. This bank guarantee will be en-cashed if it is proved that RIL's reasoning of water and sand ingress coupled with sudden drop in reservoir pressure leading to KG-D6 output drop are proved wrong. Chidambaram said the government will not go back on its decision to raise gas prices for both public sector and private producers from April 1. "Mr Moily has said that the decision of Cabinet will be given effect on April 1. That's the government's position and I think Moily is right," he said. The new rates, which are likely to

be at USD 8-8.4 against the current price of USD 4.2 per million British thermal unit, are based on the recommendations of a committee that was appointed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the request of Moily's predecessor, S Jaipal Reddy. Days before he quit as Delhi Chief Minister, Kejriwal ordered filing of a police complaint against Moily, RIL and its Chairman Ambani for creating an artificial shortage of gas in the country and raising prices. "Now, what is the status of FIR, I don't know. I think it is a laughable FIR. If an FIR is being registered, it would be a laughable FIR," Chidambaram added. Moily himself had termed the lodging of the FIR as unconstitutional and against the principles of federalism.

India’s Fiscal Position Remains Weak, Says Moody’s By A Business Reporter

G

lobal rating agency Moody's said India's interim budget is in line with the policy assumptions that underpin the government's Baa3 rating with a stable outlook. The global rating agency has, however, cautioned that India's fiscal position remains "weak". "Moody's stable outlook on India's Baa3 sovereign rating incorporates the macro-economic risks posed by the government's high

deficit and debt ratios as well as its recent efforts to control the fiscal deficit through ad hoc measures," it said in a statement. The rating also incorporates the medium-term credit support provided by the government's favourable access to domestic savings for the purposes of financing its large borrowing requirements, the statement added. The new government which would take office likely by May would determine the longer-term

ndia's gold demand remained buoyant in 2013 and rose by 13% to 975 tonnes compared to 2012, despite government putting in several restrictions to curb imports, according to a World Gold Council report. Gold demand in the country was 864 tonnes during 2012, according to data given in WGC 'Gold Demand Trends 2013' report. "India's gold demand was up 13% in 2013, compared to 2012. Demand in the second half was lower due to the effect of the supply curbs introduced in that period, but, equally, it was due to households having met a large part of their annual gold requirements in the first half, using the price drop in April as a buying opportunity," WGC Managing Director India Somasundaram P R told reporters. The total jewelery demand in the country in 2013 was up by 11% at 612.7 tonne valued at Rs 1,61,750.6 cr compared to 552 tonne valued at Rs 1,58,359.1 cr in 2012.The total investment demand for 2013, was up by 16 %at 362.1 tonnes from 312.2 tonnes in 2012.In value terms, gold investment demand rose by 6% at Rs 95,460.8 cr against Rs 90,184.6 cr in 2012. Recycled gold, however, de-

clined by 10.79% to 100.8 tonnes in 2013, compared to 113 tonnes in 2012. The latter half of 2013, Somasundaram said, has seen intense grey market activity but its impact will be more visible and significant this year if the import curbs continue. Estimates of the extent of gold smuggling in India vary widely, market analysts have suggested it could have added between 20-30 tonnes per month, the report pointed out. "However, our estimation, based on our own analysis of the market, is that these unofficial flows may be considerably higher. We have previously been on record with our estimate of between 150-200 for 2013, and we feel that the total for 2013, was closer to the top-end of this range," he said. Talking about 2014, Somasundaram said the industry is not in a very happy situation but the year will be a come back for the precious metal."In India, even as the current scenario is not very good, I am positive about gold. I am confident that gold will play a significant role in the country's economy. In 2014, market estimation of gold demand is between 900 - 1000 tonnes," he added.

fiscal trends that could impact the government's credit profile, it said. Global rating agencies like Moody's, S&P and Fitch have repeatedly threatened to lower India's credit rating and a downgrade would mean pushing the country's sovereign rating to junk status, making overseas borrowings by corporates costlier. "Moody's notes that India's fiscal deficit ratios have declined over the last two years, but its general (central and state) government fiscal deficits remain higher than those of similarly rated peers," it said. Moody's further said the government's higher-than- budgeted subsidy bill reveals the fiscal position's exposure to commodity prices and exchange-rate fluctuations. In the interim budget, the government has said that the fiscal deficit for the current financial year would be contained at 4.6 per cent of GDP. The fiscal deficit, which is the gap between expenditure and revenue, was at 4.9 per cent of GDP

The government's higherthan- budgeted subsidy bill reveals the fiscal position's exposure to commodity prices and exchange-rate fluctuations. in the previous financial year. India met the target, despite lower-thanbudgeted tax revenue growth, partly through non-tax revenues - such as dividends from public-sector enterprises and fees from a telecom airwave auction - and partly through a reduction in certain expenditures. According to Moody's, while demonstrating a commitment to meeting its deficit targets, the Indian government's spending cuts are also likely to constrain GDP growth in the current year. Thus, "meeting the interim budget's proposed FY2014/15 deficit target of 4.1 per cent of GDP depends on the pace of GDP growth, commodity prices, and currency trends over the next fiscal year," it said

TRIPLE BLOW FOR INDIA

India end ignominious NZ tour with 0-1 loss in Test series as McCullum strikes a triple, Neesham gets past hundred By Chetan Narula

W

ELLINGTON: India ended the ignominious tour of New Zealand by drawing the second and final cricket Test after home team skipper Brendon McCullum became the first Kiwi batsman to hit a triple-century and stage an incredible turnaround to clinch the the two-match series 1-0. McCullum struck a historic 302, while BJ Watling made 124 and debutant James Neesham scored an unbeaten 137 as New Zealand declared their second innings at 680 for eight, giving India an improbable 435 runs to chase in little over two sessions of play. India overcame some anxious moments before finishing at 166 for three in 52 overs as the two captains decided to call off the proceedings with no result in sight. Virat Kohli smahed his sixth Test century and remained unbeaten on 105, while Rohit Sharma was not out on 31. It turned out to be a disastrous tour for India as they remained winless, losing the ODI series 0-

New Zealand. It was also the third-highest innings by a number five batsman in Test cricket after Michael Clarke's 329 not out against India in 2012 and Sir Don Bradman's 304 against England in 1934. McCullum's effort is also the second-highest individual score in the second innings after Hanif Mohammad's 337 against West Indies in 1958. Overall he is the 24th Test batsman to hit a triple-hundred, while this is the 28th instance of a triple-hundred being scored.

Virat Kohli scores a century during the second innings of India’s batting on the fifth day of the second test match against New Zealand. 4 and the Test series 0-1 following their 40-run loss in the first Test at Auckland. India looked like winning this Test match after reducing New Zealand to 94 for five in their second innings but McCullum staged a remarkable fightback and together with Watling shared a world record partnership of 352 runs for the sixth wicket to take the hosts to safety. After Watling's departure, McCullum stitched another crucial 179-run stand with Neesham for the seventh wicket to take the match beyond India's reach. McCullum's 302 runs overtook Martin Crowe's 299 scored against Sri Lanka, also at the same ground, in 1991 to become highest individual Test scorer for

Chasing an impossible 435run target, India lost their top three batsmen in the post-lunch session at the Basin Reserve. But Kohli stood tall and scored 105 unbeaten runs off just 135 balls with the help of 15 fours and one six) to steady India's ship after they were reduced to 54 for three. Kohli reached his century in the 49th over of the innings off 129 balls. He made good use of the life he was given in the 13th over in the post-lunch session at the personal score of 23, when umpire Steve Davis had failed to judge an edge off Trent Boult. Brief Scores: New Zealand 192 & 680/8 in 210 overs [Brendon McCullum 302, Jimmy Neesham, 137, Zaheer Khan 5/170] drew with India 438 & 166/3 in 52 overs [Virat Kohli 105 not out].

I’ll remember the innings for rest of my life: McCullum

W

ELLINGTON: He became the first New Zealand batsman to score a triple hundred and skipper Brendon McCullum said the epic innings will be etched in his memory for the rest of his life. McCullum spoke at length about his record-breaking 302 runs against India in the second Test, preventing the visitors from drawing level in the series. The Black Caps won the first Test in Auckland by 40 runs, and with it the series 1-0. "My innings was what was required at that stage (94/5). We were obviously scrapping to save the Test and therefore win the series, and we managed to get some partnerships under pressure. And then kept batting and batting and batting. So it was pretty satisfying to get us out of trouble and claim the series win," said McCullum after the match ended. McCullum's innings was the highest score for a New Zealand batsman in a Test innings, overtaking Martin Crowe's 299 against Sri Lanka, also scored at the same ground in 1991. He became the 24th batsman in the history of Test cricket to score a triple-hundred and join this exclusive club. "I wasn't feeling nervous until I saw the size of the crowd. That's probably when I understood the magnitude of the task at hand and the immense joy it gives fans of this cricket team to see guys succeed and see records broken," he said. "It was a moment, when the 300 came up and the applause was ongoing for quite a while, it is really when it hit home to me that it was quite a significant achievement for a New Zealander and I'll certainly remember them for the rest of my life," he added. Despite the achievement, McCullum was humble at his success and said that he was not as talented as the legends of New Zealand cricket. "Without being disrespectful I probably didn't know the magnitude of it until the last 24 hours. I grew up and watched the New Zealand cricket team for years," he said. "I watched Martin Crowe score his 299 and thought it would have been an amazing feat if he scored 300 but probably didn't quite understand how much it meant to the whole country who support this team. I also spoke to Stephen Fleming last night. I feel a little bit embarrassed because I'm nowhere near the calibre of players they were." McCullum became the second-ever New Zealand batsman to cross the 200run mark in a Test innings thrice, after Fleming. The 32-year-old shared a record 352-run partnership for the sixth wicket with BJ Watling and then James Neesham smacked a maiden Test hundred on debut to further rub salt on the Indian wounds. "Thankfully I had partners at the other end who also played brilliant innings. I thought BJ and Neesh, their innings were outstanding. BJ's in particular because he came in when we were five down for 90-odd and he obviously came off a duck in the first innings as well. To play an innings like that is testament to how strong a character he is," he said. "Then Neesh in his first Test match, with the game still reasonably poised to come out and play his natural game, which is aggressive, takes a lot of courage, so I was pretty lucky to have those guys there. Then I had to fight the emotion when I hit the ball a bit harder than I was trying to hit and make sure of the team goal first and foremost."

ELLINGTON: India frittered away a golden chance of winning the second Test against New Zealand, but skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni inexplicably continued to defend his listless bowlers and even termed the team's display during the winless tour 'quite a good performance'. Dhoni, who has invariably come out with bizarre explanations for the team's shoddy performances at press conferences, again ignored to dwell on the bowling frailties and came to the rescue of his 'fantastic' bowlers who gave away 680 runs in the second innings, saying that they bowled 'in the right areas'. Summing up what has turned out to be a disastrous tour, Dhoni said that he was disappointed with the ODI results as they failed to capitalise on situations, but was more satisfied with the performance of his 'young' team in the Test matches. "Overall, quite a good performance. We have been improving right from South Africa. We have shown that we are a side that's very talented," said Dhoni.

Having bundled out the Black Caps for 192 in the first innings and taken a 246-run lead, India looked like they would win the second Test, as they reduced New Zealand to 94 for five in their second innings. But Brendon McCullum (302) staged a remarkable fightback and together with BJ Watling, shared a world record partnership of 352 runs for the sixth wicket to take the hosts to safety. "In the first Test our second innings was brilliant. And then we came here, won the toss, and bowled really well in the first innings. In the second innings also, we got a good start till Brendon and Watling came in. I don't think it was bad bowling, but it is just that they kept the good deliveries out," the Indian skipper explained. “Appreciate what Brendon and Watling did, soak up the pressure when we were bowling well and score freely once the bowlers Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni applauds were tired," he said. Normally, in the individual events we tend to be more conservative but since it’s a team event and if one player is not doing well then we can depend on the other two members to go flat out.”

MUMBAI: Leggie Amit Mishra, who has been virtually a passenger with the Indian touring team without getting into the playing eleven, should have been tried out by the team management during the New Zealand series to show his mettle, said former India pacer Karsan Ghavri. "I think other spinners should be given a chance. Unfortunately on such fast wickets (like in New Zealand), the spinners are not getting a chance to show their talent. I personally feel Amit Mishra should have been given a chance. Even (Ravichandran) Ashwin hasn't done really well in New Zealand (in ODIs)," Ghavri said.

EW DELHI: India's number one singles player Somdev Devvarman advanced to the second round with a straight set victory but sixth seed Yuki Bhambri made a shock first round exit from the ONGCGAIL Delhi Open. Second seed Somdev brushed aside the challenge of wild card compatriot Karunuday Singh 6-2 7-5 in one hour and 28 minutes while Yuki squandered a match point against Frenchman Lucas Pouille to be knocked out with a 6-2 5-7 5-7 scoreline in two hours and 20 minutes at R K Khanna Tennis stadium. Karunuday, playing only his second main draw at a Challenger event, began well by serving out the first game at love with an ace but keeping the points short was a big task against Somdev, who has amazing ability to retrieve the ball. The two players were happy playing from the baseline and it only helped Somdev, who sent many a balls short but Karunuday did not latch on to them. Rather he kept the ball in play and there it was difficult to outrally Somdev. "It was strange. The wind was coming from both the sides. It was not cleanest of the

No Sushil, Yogeshwar for freestyle Wrestling World Cup

NEW DELHI: Olympic medallist grapplers Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt will not be a part of the next month's Freestyle Wrestling World Cup as the two have been given further rest by the federation from national duties. Sushil and Yogeshwar haven't taken the mat since their medal winning feat at London Olympics in 2012 and now the two celebrated wrestlers are eyeing return at the Commonwealth Games in July this year. "The federation (WFI) has shortlisted important tournaments for senior wrestlers. The federation wants to give other wrestlers a chance.
