eeks after a students’ group from the Mumbai University demanded the scrapping of the University’s student council elections alleging that it flouts several rules of the Maharashtra Universities Act 1994, the Bombay High Court on Thursday gave a green signal for the elections to be conducted on January 15. The president and secretary of the council will be elected on that day. The court also refused to grant relief to Advocate Manoj Tekade, who had petitioned in the court

seeking a stay on the polls, alleging gross violations in the election process. This comes as the division bench of Justice S. J. Vazifdar and Justice G. S Patel was hearing a public interest litigation filed by the advocate alleging a violation in the poll process and the use of political influence. The group had alleged that members of various political parties are also involved in the election which is a violation of the Act. “The Act clearly states that the contestants must not be associated with any political party. How-

ever, representatives of various political outfits attend the meeting while the process of scrutinising the forms of the candidates is on,” said Tekade. In his petition to the court, Tekade said that several candidates were allegedly threatened by members of political parties, and despite having complained to the vice-chancellor of the university, no steps have been taken. When asked by the bench if political parties were allowed to enter the university premises during the elections, advocate Rui Rodrigues, appearing for the university, told

the court that no restrictions are put on anyone from entering the premises and that adequate security measures are taken during elections. The petition has sought a direction to constitute a committee to look into the allegations and complaints raised by the representatives, and take appropriate action against the political representatives involved. The bench accepted the statement and said, “We will post this petition for hearing on January 16. Let’s see what happens on January 15.”

Somaiya demands probe into tenders for school benches By Prashant Hamine

F

ormer BJP MP Dr. Kirit Somaiya yesterday, demanded that the state government halt the tendering process for the purchase of 3.80 lakh school benches in government schools, until the probe is over in respect of changing tender conditions. Speaking to newspersons here, he said that the earlier tender conditions like eco-friendly polymer school benches were changed to polymer benches, and the condition that bidders had to have at least 14 molding machines was also imposed. He said that the initial

cost which was approximately Rs. 89.50 crore shot up to Rs. 159 crore on account of the change in some tender conditions, resulting in a loss of Rs. 80 crore. The senior BJP leader remarked that the purchase of the school benches was under the centrally funded Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), which was supposed to be implemented by the state. Somaiya wanted to know why the condition of 14 molding machines was enforced on bidders. He said that out of the nine bidders who applied for the tender, only two are left in the fray. Somaiya alleged that the tender con-

ditions were changed midway to suit some parties. Somaiya added that another condition stating that the bidder should have a business presence of at least five years in the state was also changed. He said that when he asked the government why the tender conditions were changed midway, officials began pointing fingers at each other. The senior BJP leader stated that another bizarre condition was that the school bench should have a minimum open space of 500 meters and that the bidder should have at least 10 per cent furniture business.

State to have technology varsity By A Staff Reporter

M

aharashtra cabinet on Thursday greenlighted setting up of a technology university, which will bring under its umbrella the engineering, pharmacy and architecture colleges in the state, an official statement said. However, individual colleges, both government and private, would have the choice to remain outside its ambit.

day after the Bombay High Court directed the Brihnamumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to complete the process of registering its hawkers within four months stipulated by the Supreme Court, the corporation on Thursday held its first introductory meeting with the hawkers and set up a 35member Town Vending Committee to monitor and register the hawkers in Mumbai. This comes as the High Court had, on Wednesday, declined to stay the town vending committee’s first meeting scheduled on Thursday for the registration of hawkers. Accordingly, the committee was set up to implement the National Hawker’s Policy following the Supreme Court’s order wherein hawkers from various unions met BMC commissioner Sitaram Kunte, civic and police officials. Farooq Chaus, general secretary of the Maharastra street vendors association said, “There should be no action taken against the hawkers until and unless the registration and the survey are not completed. A lot of hawkers are facing problems as they are forcefully asked to

shut their business by police officials claiming that it is for security reasons”. Civic officials said that the committee’s work is to identify hawking zones, demarcate hawking and non-hawking zones and approve licences for hawkers. Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte said, “There will be clarification on every aspect and the issues of the hawkers will be solved agenda wise”. Nawaaz Hafiz Khan, Chairman of the Maharashtra Ekta Hawkers’ union said, “If the BMC has to take action against unauthorised hawkers it should be carried out in a transparent manner. A notice to these hawkers should be issued a week in advance or the union representative of the concerned area should be aware of it”. According to the survey by TATA yuva in 1997, the Municipal Corporation collects only Rs.12 crore by way of licence fee from the hawkers, while police officials allegedly receive collective ‘hafta’ of Rs.324 crore annually from unauthorised hawkers. The Municipal Corporation could increase its revenue substantially if all the hawkers in the city were covered. It is estimated that the revenue could go up to Rs.200 crore. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in Azad Shrivastav | ADC

speculation about a change in their equations. Thackeray was among the selected few leaders who were invited to attend Modi’s swearing-in as

the CM of Gujarat for the fourth successive term. Modi rolled a red carpet for Thackeray when he went to Gujarat to study the state’s model of development. Reacting to Thackeray’s remarks against Modi, state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis retorted back that as the popularity of Modi has cast shadows over other leaders whose TRPs have gone down, they are criticising Modi out of sheer despondency. The state BJP president pointed out that Raj Thackeray had visited Gujarat in 2011 and had showered lavish praise on Modi’s style of governance. He said that Modi is deft in handling matters of Gujarat and at the same time cam-

paigning all over the country. Fadnavis stated that Modi was not just speaking about Gujarat, but also spoke about national issues. Initially the BJP had tried its level best to induct MNS into the Mahayuti. The former national president of the saffron party Nitin Gadkari personally called on Thackeray. Another BJP leader Gopinath Munde also had shown his inclination to take Raj Thackeray in the grand alliance along with Shiv Sena and RPI. However, every time, MNS chief lent a cold shoulder and kept BJP on the tenterhooks. But MNS sources disclosed to ADC that the party leaders favoured a tie-up with the Mahayuti.

Five persons, including impotent tuition teacher, held for forcing his wife to have sex with his friends

By Zuber Ansari

T

he Nirmal Nagar police on Thursday arrested a Kherwadi based tuition teacher for forcing his wife to have sex with his friends. According to the police, since the accused is impotent and wanted his wife to conceive, he forced her to sleep with his friends. According to the police, the couple who stays in Kherwadi, Bandra (E), got married in 2009. Soon after the marriage, the accused confessed to the victim that he was impotent. “The accused asked his wife to keep his confession a secret in order to save him from embarrassment in front of his family and society. He also convinced his wife to have sex with his friends so that she could get pregnant,” said a police officer from Kherwadi police station.

As per the victim’s statement, soon after the accused made this confession, they shifted from his Kherwadi residence to a rented flat Chembur where the accused made new friends in the locality, whom he told about his impotency. He then convinced them to have sex with his wife on different occasions, making this continue for almost two years. When she could not get pregnant even after two years, the accused shifted back to his home in Kherwadi. At Kherwadi too, the accused kept on forcing his wife to entertain his friends. “Knowing that his neighbours in Kherwadi would figure out that something was amiss, the accused booked hotels and lodges. On most occasions, he witnessed the rape. However, despite all the efforts by the accused to maintain his secret about his impotency, the word spread in the locality and the neigh-

T

he Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai’s crime branch has now started probing the brokers’ role in connection with the National Spot Exchange Ltd (NSEL) payment crisis racket of Rs. 5,600 crore. The investigators came across certain disparities and irregularities in the manner in which the business was being conducted in NSEL, which makes apparent the role of brokers in the scam, said the police. After the probe into the NSEL scam was initiated more than two months ago, sleuths from the EOW, for the first time, have come across the brokers’ hand in the racket. With regard to the brokers’ role, police are presently probing the angle of difference in time between the purchase and sale transactions,

and the non-collection of delivery order and warehouse receipts, informed a police source who is privy to the details of probe. Talking the ADC, Additional CP (EOW), Rajvardhan Sinha said, “There are strong reasons to believe that the brokers played a vital role in the entire racket.” According to investigators, there should be a minimal gap between the sales and purchase of commodities while trading. However, there was a huge gap of between 20 minutes and a couple of hours between the sales and purchases during trading, said the police. This clearly highlights that the brokers managed to earn maximum profit, perhaps, on every transaction. “Moreover, the brokers, who were acting on the behalf of the investors, did not collect the delivery orders and warehouse receipts, which are

considered the title of the goods. This becomes a criminal breach of trust”, said a source. Hitherto, the EOW was probing the role of the directors and management officials of the NSEL. In this regard, the police has taken down the statements of the main accused Jignesh Shah, Vice Chairman, Financial Technologies and the promoter of NSEL, as well as of his trusted aides Joseph Massey, MD, MCX-SX, and Shreekant Javalgekar, MD, MCX. Early this week, a 9000 page chargesheet was submitted by the police, in which the names of five accused, namely Amit Mukherjee, Jay B, Anjani Sinha, Nilesh Patel and Arunkumar Sharma are mentioned. However, the chargesheet bears no mention of the names of Shah, Massey and Javalgekar.

bours began taunting the couple over their characters,” the officer further added. This led to frequent fights between the couple and the accused began harassing his wife over domestic issues. Following the increasing mental harassment, the victim left her husband’s house and while staying with her parents, approached the Nirmal Nagar police last week. After verifying the facts, the Nirmal Nagar police registered a complaint on Thursday night and arrested the accused and five of his friends in connection with the case. Police inspector Balwant Deshmukh of Nirmal Nagar police station said, “The accused’s friends have been booked under Section 376 for rape, while the husband is booked under Section 418 for cheating with the knowledge that wrongful loss may ensue to person whose interest the offender is bound to protect and Section 498 for enticing or taking away or detaining with criminal intent a married woman. Section 34 for common intention has also been invoked on all the accused. We have so far arrested five people in the case including the victim’s husband and are expecting to make more arrests soon. The accused will be produced in the court on Friday.”

This is a good decision keeping in mind the public health services. It is an open secret that many homoeopathy practitioners also practice allopathy causing no harm to their patients. This has been happening since ages. In Maharashtra, out of the 60,000 and odd homoeopathy doctors, 35000 to 40,000 prescribe allopathic medicines also. But they were doing so with a sword hanging over their heads. But this decision will now validate and make official their allopathy practice as well. PRESCRIBE ALLOPATHIC MEDS interests of the ministers who themselves run several homoeopathic colleges in the state. “We strictly oppose this decision as this is like giving the non-allopathic doctors a backdoor entry into the realm of allopathy. There are several minsters whose name I would not want to mention who have homoeopathic medical colleges and this decision is favourable to them. It is for their vested interests that this decision has been passed. Also, how is it possible that what took us four years to learn would be learnt by the non-allopathic doctors within a year? This is like playing with people's health as there are instances where cross practicing has endangered people's lives. This is a wrong decision and we will fight it. And yet if a Government Resolution is made, we will go on a strike or if required, approach the court,” said Dr.

Dilip Sarda, President, IMA, Maharashtra. The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) feels this decision projects the branch of homoeopathy medicine in a bad light. “Allowing homoeopathy doctors to practice allopathy will make people feel that the branch of homoeopathy is not good enough to cure people. Then why have so many homoeopathy medical colleges at all? Also, giving homoeopathy practitioners a crash course of a year and letting them prescribe modern medicines is playing with people's lives as it takes time to get knowledge about the medicines. Are we fools to give four years of our lives of pharmacology when it could be learnt in a year's time? This is not done. We will agitate and protest this decision,” said Dr. Santosh Wakchaure, president, MARD.

Sena President Uddhav Thackeray, who was supposed to address their grievances on Thursday, postponed the meeting till Sunday. All the lady councillors across the party protested against this and the general body meeting of the corporation was thus adjourned on Thursday. A lady councillor who does not wish to be named said, “Our own senior party leaders are indulging in activities like writing names and mobile numbers of lady councillors in the toilets”. Sena councillor from Borivali, Shital Mhatre said, “Someone had written my name and mobile number in a toilet stating that I was a prostitute. My phone was continuously ringing. I was mentally disturbed and almost broke down. Only men with psychological disorders can do things like these. I have registered a police complaint”. Bharatiya Janata Party

When these women councillors were discussing this issue in the Mayor’s chamber, Sena councillor and son of a legislator, Abhishek Ghosalkar, was allegedly video shooting it. The women then asked him to vacate the cabin. Abhishek Ghosalkar said, “These are false allegations. I did not shoot their video. Foreign study tour at govt’s expense A

LARGE number of MPs, MLAs and municipal councillors appear to be interested and very keen about undertaking study tours. They usually want to go to advanced nations of the West. If asked what they want to study, their replies are different: they say they want to study how democracy works, what are their perceptions about life, how they keep their cities clean, what they use for constructing roads, how they deal with adverse weather, what they do for protection of women. Recently, a delegation which went to Egypt to study democracy evidently did not know that there is no democracy in Egypt. And it was quite a mystery when a delegation went on a study tour of Venice in Italy. Did they want to study the canals there so they can have similar way for transport, instead of roads on which potholes have to be covered every year. Some years ago, a delegation of municipal councillors went to London to study drainage there. How they went about this stinking study is not known. Only a couple of days ago, a delegation of Uttar Pradesh MLAs went on a study tour of several western countries. There was also another delegation of MLAs from Karnataka who also went on a study tour of Latin America. Instead of studying, they were having a good time on a beach: There was no study at all and when this fact was exposed by the media, they had no go but to cut short their study tour and return home. It was indicated by the speaker of the Katanataka assembly that such study tours would be scrapped. It has become quite clear that under the pretext of undertaking study tours, our legislators are having a holiday. It would have been all right if they go on a holiday at their own expense. That, however, is not the case. The government foots the bill dipping into the taxpayers' hard-earned money.

O

NE of my deepest regrets has been to confine myself to one media column a week. So many developments take place and so many astounding events erupt day by day that only a daily column can do justice to all of them. Most citizens read just one paper. There might be quite a few who read more than one – but their number is restricted. Besides, how many read the views – the editorials – of newspapers round the country in various languages? I tell myself that if I were an editor I would devote one full page every day to reproduce good summaries of editorial comment on any subject of not just English papers but of all Indian language papers – and there are many of them of such high standards. To my mind that is the biggest service we can do for the country. The people must know what the entire country thinks on any single issue of any importance. I find it painful to fall behind times because of my self-imposed commitment to write only a weekly column. Long after my last column on the regard and even affection in which Sachin was held in the usually sophisticated media, I read several more columns all praising him to the skies. I had to skip them.

Media often exceeds freedom limits Then there was the small but relevant controversy on the differences between Jawaharlal Nehru and Vallabhbhai Patel which needed to be dealt with. To my immense joy I found in the Royist monthly The Radical Humanist (Nov. 2013) the writings of M.N. Roy which was a tremendous eye-opener. To the GenNext I may need to introduce Manavendra Nath Roy, probably one of the greatest intellectuals of the twentieth century who was once close enough to the likes of Lenin and Stalin and is credited with founding the Communist Party of China. He was subsequently to rethink his ideas on Marxism and conceive Radical Humanism. Roy had written two articles on Vallabhbhai, one on the occasion of the celebration of Patel’s 74th birthday and another after his death. Of Vallabhbhai he wrote in his first one: “Nationalist India was fortunate to have Sardar Patel to guide her destiny for a generation. But her misfortune is that there will be none to take his place when he is no more.” On Patel’s thinking on Kashmir, Roy wrote: “If Sardar Patel had had his way also on the Kashmir issue, India

would not be today spending 50 per cent of her revenue on military budget...” To read the two articles is an education. On another subject Patel wrote of Nehru: “He (Patel) also knew that Nehru’s popularity gave him the opportunity to consolidate a totalitarian state behind a democratic facade. Therefore, he tolerated Nehru’s foreign policy, taking at the same time all precautions against its doing any irreparable harm.” But to get back to the media. The media in India is free; often it breaks the limits of its freedom but no one challenges it because they are scared of it. The media needs to be told that responsibility is – here again, it needs to be made clear – self-imposed. It

MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath should not be imposed. And, in any event it is extremely difficult to draw the line, even if the assignment to do so is allotted to a Council of Judges and not just the Press Council of India. It is not just the print media that seemingly crosses the line. The electronic media – the TV channels seem more if not equally guilty. But to come back to the column. There are, according to one study, 398 daily newspapers, 98 non-daily newspapers and 312 radio stations. According to another study there were 4,453 newspapers in India in 1995. The current number is not known. How can one possibly access all these communicators’ views on any subject under the sun, presuming that they write editorials as well? What little satisfaction we can draw from what is available is that the top ten newspapers in India control roughly 50 per cent of daily circulation in all languages. Bennett Coleman and The Indian Express between them own roughly 20 per cent of daily circulation, but just reporting on what they say can hardly be taken as the national view.

HERE is a story told in India of how once all the inhabitants of a village which had suffered from drought, gathered together before the temple of their God, praying that for this year an abundance of rain might fall. A voice from the unseen replied, ‘Whatever We do is for the betterment of Our purpose, ye have no right to interfere with Our work, oh! ye men.’ But they again cried for mercy, and continued to do so more persistently. Then came the answer saying ‘Your prayers, fastings, and sacrifices have induced Us to grant for this one year as much rain as ye desire.’ They all returned home rejoicing. In the autumn they worked vigorously on their farms, and after having prepared the ground and sown the seed, they prayed for rain. When they considered that sufficient had fallen they again had recoursed to prayer, and the rain ceased. In this way an ideal crop of corn was produced and all the inhabitants of that country made merry

over it. This year more corn was grown than ever before. After the crops were gathered in, however, all those who ate the corn died and many were the victims. In perplexity they again sought the God bowing low before the temple crying, ‘Why hast Thou shown such wrath to us, after having shown so great a mercy?’ The

MATTER & SPIRIT God replied, ‘It was not Our wrath, but your folly for interfering with Our work; We sometimes send a drought, and at other times a flood, and We have Our reasons for doing so, for in this way that the poisonous is destroyed, leaving only what is beneficial for the preservation of your life.’ The villagers prostrated themselves in humble prayer saying, ‘We shall never again try to control the affairs of the universe, Thou art the Creator and Thou art the Controller, we are

Among the great papers we surely have to include The Tribune from the Punjab, ‘The Statesman’ from Bengal and ‘The Pioneer’ from Uttar Pradesh. Unfortunately my own focus is somewhat limited and does not take into account the views of some of the finest papers in Indian languages. I have to offer my humble apologies.

Modi following Vallabbhai’s footsteps But to come back briefly to Roy and Vallbhbhai. Roy never considered the integration of the States as the Sardar’s greatest achievement. As he also put it: “I do not know what was the Sardar’s attitude towards the Kashmir issue. But I am inclined to believe that it was as realistic as his attitude towards Pakistan.” As he put it: “The Sardar had no choice but to play the game; but one could be sure that he loathes the stupidity clothed in the glamour of popular heroes”. One suspects that Narendra Modi is following in the Sardar’s footsteps. The Times of India gave him full marks for his ‘lalkar’ rally in the trouble-torn J&K, saying that it was praiseworthy “that he focused on progressive troupes rather than on predictable attacks on Pakistan, terrorism and separatism”. Modi in his speech tried to connect with youth, with talk of setting up high-quality educational institutions like IITs and IIMs. As the paper saw it, Modi “must not let go this historical opportunity to reposition BJP from a party of Hindutva to a centre-right entity”. That was what, one suspects, Vallabhbhai would have done. And one last tribute to Sachin and this from a less known paper from Chennai known as News Today (Nov.19): “Across India and in many other countries, grown men and women wept as we heard Tendulkar speak from his heart... many more wept as we watched him walk up to the pitch, bend down, touch it, and then touch his heart... We cried as he shed a tear. On the day Tendulkar made his speech, even the most hostile cynic did not have the voice that was loud enough to protest the decision to award him the Bharat Ratna...” The paper said many more things about Sachin, but the last word should go to The Hitavada which provided the final valedictory: “That is Sachin Tendulkar who gave cricket a new face. May he bloom even in the moonlight zone. May he cast his cool light on succeeding generations.” Thine innocent children, and Thou alone knowest what is best for us.’ There are two aspects of individual harmony: the harmony between body and soul, and the harmony between individuals. The soul rejoices in the comforts experienced by the external self, yet man becomes so engrossed in them that the soul’s true comfort is neglected. This keeps man dissatisfied through all the momentary comforts he may enjoy, but not understanding this he attributes the cause of his dissatisfaction to some unsatisfied desire in his life. The outlet of all earthly passions gives a momentary satisfaction, yet creates a tendency for more; in this struggle the satisfaction of the soul is overlooked by man who is constantly busied in the pursuit of his earthly enjoyment and comfort, depriving the soul of its true bliss. The true delight of the soul lies in love, harmony, and beauty, the outcome of which is wisdom, calm, and peace; the more constant they are the greater is the satisfaction of the soul. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

BANK ON IT? With a number of frauds and complaints against banks coming to the fore, the Banking sector in India needs to undergo a positive change.

YOU SAID IT: Apart from drawing criticism from across the nation, Bhushan’s comment over J&K also resulted in the AAP distancing itself from his statement.

Hypocritical Congress PRASHANT Bhushan is being criticised from all quarters for his controversial remarks about referendum in Jammu & Kashmir. Though the critics are fully justified in their reaction, a thought should also be given to one historic fact. Who floated the idea for the first time in 1947-48 about a plebiscite in J&K to determine where the people of the state would like their state to remain – in India or with Pakistan? Was it not the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru? The Congressmen and the “secular” press never mention this while attacking their political opponents. — Arun Malankar, Santacruz

RBI in restructuring mode RBI is still in rectification and restructuring mode and has lost out all the options to bring out a solution to make things move in proper direction. The mid-quarter policy review announced by the RBI has the undertone of a hawkish disposition even though the status quo was maintained to the policy rate (repo rate). The decision of the RBI was in

marked contrast to a 25 basis point increase in the rate in the Second Quarter Review of Monetary Policy. The decision of the RBI read in conjunction with their assessment of the global and Indian Economic scenario clearly demonstrates the wisdom of the RBI not to make haste but to wait and watch. The policy decision is a close one. Current inflation is too high. However, given the uncertainty surrounding the short-term path of inflation from the high current levels, and given the weak state of the economy, the inadvisability of overly reactive policy action, as well as the long lags with which monetary policy works, there is merit in waiting for more data to reduce uncertainty. — S. Shelter camps in Muzaffarnagar This refers to your edit-piece ‘LeT threat: Centre, State no action’ (Jan. 8) which is laudable for highlighting the UP government’s apathetic attitude to the happenings in the shelters for the riot victims in Muzaffarnagar. More than 40 infants have died due to severe cold in these camps but the officials have been refusing to accept that children can die due to extreme cold if not protected against it properly. More appalling has been the total indifference shown to Rahul Gandhi’s observations about terrorists luring the victims with money to join them and here again the government has been going off at a tangent and arguing that those staying in these shelters were not riot victims but outsiders brought in by vested interests to discredit the administration. All these camps have been dismantled now leaving the people in the lurch. The Centre cannot be blamed for not acting on Rahul’s warnings because the state

RBI’s intervention needed BANK officials are becoming fraudsters in recent times. ICICI Bank mostly bungles when they deal with their valued clients. Now it is the turn of HDFC bank who faced the ire of their own clientele. Instead of having limited number of accounts and providing the best service, the bank opens more accounts and makes the customer suffer. Most of such accounts are dormant and thus give scope for committing frauds. By simply issuing a statement after the scam is exposed, the purpose is not served. Letter of credit frauds are also taking place as the inexperienced staff gives scope for frauds resulting in huge loss to the bank and its customers. This has been happening for years and the RBI as a watchdog should attend customer complaints on priority basis. Going to Ombudsman Bank is the only way to get an amicable solution. CBI Director’s findings that over Rs.5,500 crore was lost in bank frauds in four fiscals. There is no doubt that banks are the losers but the role of RBI is to be redefined to provide amicable solutions in the years to come.

PM’s Modi bashing PRIME Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s press conference with the media in Delhi was outstanding as he answered most questions honestly. He announced retirement from active politics making way for Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi to be Congress Party’s prime ministerial candidate for 2014 general elections to take on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. Dr. Singh with his vast experience and knowledge attacked Modi calling him the disaster prime minister if he is elected. I strongly feel that Modi, the man behind the 2002 Gujarat riots, is the most controversial personality with a very dangerous background and is capable of instigating communal violence. It is high time that all the secular parties who want to see a stable and united India must come together and defeat the dirty intentions of communal forces that are bent on dividing the country on the basis of caste and reli-

gion for their selfish personal and political gains. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

ACCORDING to Dr. Singh, Rahul Gandhi possesses “outstanding credentials” to occupy the august post of the Prime Minister. Every Tom Dick and Harry in the country knows that the only ‘merit’ possessed by the crown prince is that he is the scion of the NehruGandhi dynasty. — Vineet Phadtare, Borivali

‘IT will be disastrous for the country to have Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of the country’ were the words of Dr. Manmohan Singh in his farewell speech. But Manmohan Singh has already been a disaster as the country’s PM by proving inept and impotent in taking any action in scams, corrupt practices, frauds, rapes, scandals in defence deals, etc. Manmohan

Tips to answer Activity Sheet Dear Students, Compliments of the season. A very happy new fruitful and energetic year to you, all. May your wishes be fulfilled and may your hardwork be crowned with success. You have all been very busy studying for the prelims and the sequel—the Board Exams. Tension is rising, expectations are increasing and so, you are a little worked-up—relax students! English as a subject is new to you this year—- the book, the pattern and the approach. Nevertheless, don’t worry, be happy. I’m going to share with you a few tips of answering the activitysheet. The activity sheet is based on reading skill. Q I(A), IIA+B, IIIA+B+VI are all based on reading very carefully, skimming, scanning and understanding the use of the words. QI (a) True or False Read the sentences and then read the passage. Normally, there are direct answers to help you to score. Copy the sentence and write TRUE or FALSE. (b) Answer the question in about 5-6 lines. No introduction is necessary. If it s a web, draw the web and write the answer. Its ½ mark per word within the web. (c) Copy the sentence and complete it. Underline in in pencil. Its 1 mark each. (d) Grammar-based activity. (1) and (2) copy the sentence and complete the blank. Where there is a tail tag, copy the sentence and then add tag. Remember the question mark. The ‘e’ is the Personal Response Question. MOVIES OF

2014 While there will be several movies releasing this year. Priyanka Singh & Dev Goswami bring you the most promising movies which you must not miss

T

he award season — which will soon start — will tell you about the best movies of the year gone by. But, if you want to know what movies you can look forward to this year, this is the article you should be reading. From great directors marking their return to biopics and historical dramas, there’s a lot that 2014 has in store for you. So, without further ado, we present you our list of must-watch Hollywood and Bollywood movies of this year.

Hollywood The Monuments Men

when February This historical drama has George Clooney written all over it — literally. He directed the movie, co-authored the script and of course, is a part of the cast as well. But, it is not just Clooney that has us looking forward to this movie; he has managed to get the fascinating

story of Roosevelt ordering a small platoon of soldiers to recover artistic masterpieces deep behind enemy lines in Germany during the World War II. Other cast members include Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin and Hugh Bonneville.

Need for Speed

when March Based on EA’s long-running, popular racing franchisee, Need for Speed will have the super-talented Aaron Paul (of Breaking Bad fame) as a street racer who is on a mission to get vengeance after being released from prison for a crime he didn’t commit. He’s backed up by Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots and Michael Keaton. And it’s not just screaming tyres, crashes and bangs that you can look forward to. If the trailer is anything to go by, there is a bit of drama in the movie, which has been scripted by George Nolfi, who wrote Ocean’s Eleven and Ocean’s Twelve

and wrote as well as directed Adjustment Bureau.

Noah

when March A decade after the hit The Passion of Christ, another Biblical epic is coming our way. Noah is directed by Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan) and is a movie that he gave up on The Wolverine for. With the brilliant Russel Crowe as the lead, along with Emma Watson, Jennifer Connely and Anthony Hopkins as co-stars, this tale about Noah’s Ark is something that we are eagerly waiting for.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

when April Finding it hard to wait for the sequel to Avengers? Well, Marvel Studios is coming to

continued from pg 13 « your rescue with Captain America. The Winter Soldier marks the return of Bucky Barns — Steve Roger’s (for those who don’t know, Captain America) best friend who is brainwashed into becoming an assassin. The movie also features the drool-worthy Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and is a throwback to the ’70s era of spy thrillers. Other cast members include Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie and Robert Redford. Oh, and who can forget Samuel L. Jackson as the super-leader Nick Furry?!

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JANUARY 10, 2014

when May Reactions to the Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield were mixed. But, we aren’t ready to give up on the series yet, with the sequel promising a mix of interesting villains. The movie will see the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx) as well as the return of Peter Parkar’s childhood friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan). The movie also has Emma Stone portraying Gwen Stacy — Spidey’s love interest.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Gone Girl

when May If you’re an X-Men fan, we don’t even have to explain why this movie is on our list of mustwatch films. It has been labeled as the movie

Bollywood

when November Just two words — Christopher Nolan! The super-talented director who manages to mess around with our brains every single time and the man behind brilliant movies such as The Dark Knight and Inception is now going into outer space. The film is set in the future where overpopulation and climatic conditions have made earth inhabitable, leading to a set of scientists and explorers to embark on a mission to save humanity. The idea might not be the most original, but we are waiting to see what Mr. Nolan can do with it. Oh, and it features quite a cast too — Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Matt Damon, Topher Grace, Casey Affleck, John Lithgow, Wes Bentley, and Michael Caine. Yes, we can’t wait for it too!

22 Jump Street

when June When 21 Jump Street released in 2012 we all knew it was going to be funny. But no one thought that it would be so funny! Featuring some amazing chemistry between the perfectly cast Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, the movie made for a great high school-cop parody. The sequel wasn’t totally unexpected — after all, 21 Jump Street ended with Captain Dickson (played by Ice Cube) sending his two bumbling but surprisingly, effective officers to college. We are just anticipating the number of college clichés that 22 Jump Street will take on.

Amazing Spider-Man 2

Interstellar

X-Men fans have always craved — the Days of Future Past marks the return of Bryan Singer (director of the first two still-loved X-Men movies) as director along with a majority of the cast. If that hasn’t made you to take notice of the movie, then read this: the movie features time travel, meaning that Magneto will be portrayed by Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender, while Charles Xavier will be played by Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy. Mind already blown!

when October We’ve seriously missed David Fincher. The man behind The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has been

with the inseparable life of Bikram and Bala, who grew from being small time, inconsequential coal thieves, to becoming the most powerful black marketing mafiamen. Looking at their chemistry and bromance on this season of Koffee with Karan, it’ll be interesting to see how that equation pans out on celluloid.

concentrating on TV, with shows such as the gripping House of Cards. While we were waiting for him to come out with a sequel to the Millennium Girl series, what he is instead going to give us is Gone Girl — an adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s book of the same name (she’s also written the screenplay). The movie stars Ben Affleck as the lead character of Nick Dunne, along with Rosamund Pike, Tyler Perry and Neil Patrick Harris. While details on the film’s plot are still under wraps, based on the book, we can say that it promises to be a ‘did he?’ thriller.

to women. With Dixit playing the head of the gang, this film revolves around the story of Gulabi Gang which is active in the Bundelkhand region of India.

Shaadi Ke Side Effects

Highway

when February Highway has a very interesting combination of Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda and is being directed by Imtiaz Ali. If one is to judge by the trailers of the movie, this romantic drama has already built up some high expectations. Alia Bhat, after playing a typical teenager in her debut movie Student of the Year, is seen taking on a rather serious role along with the grossly underrated Randeep Hooda. Another highlight of the movie is the music composed by A. R. Rahman.

when February Gunday stars Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, as Bikram and Bala, along with Priyanka Chopra and Irrfan Khan in lead roles, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar (previously directed Mere Brother Ki Dulhan). Based in Calcutta during its most unsettled times in the ’70s, the film deals

when November Okay, this one movie which might not be a default choice for everyone. If you haven’t liked the previous ones, you can probably give this one a skip. But, if you’re a fan, then this movie will be perfect to end your year with. In Mockingjay Part I, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) finds herself at the forefront of the rebellion against the Capitol setting the stage for the end of the series.

director Raj Kumar Hirani for P.K. While the story of the film has been kept under wraps, it seems that Hirani, who has had a terrific record so far with Munnabhai films and 3 Idiots, is taking on godmen in his next. Other cast members are Sanjay Dutt, Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, Ram Sethi and Boman Irani.

Bang Bang

when February A sequel to the 2006 hit Pyaar Ke Side Effects that starred Rahul Bose and Mallika Sherawat, Shaadi Ke Side Effects has Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan. It is a continuation of the previous film that explores the life now that they are married. The sequel is being directed by Saket Chowdhary who also manned the previous installment.

when October Krrish 3 did deliver at the box office, but 2013 was certainly a mixed bag for Hrithik Roshan personally due to his separation from wife Suzanne and a bout of ill-health. However, Bang Bang is a much awaited one with the sizzling Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara pairing of Roshan with Katrina Kaif. It is being directed by Siddharth Anand (Anjaana Anjaani, Salaam Namaste), produced by Fox Star Studios and is an official remake of the Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz starrer, Knight & Day.

Jagga Jasoos

2 States

Gunday

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part I

when April Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel, 2 States: The Story Of My Marriage and jointly written for the screen by Bhagat and Sreerag Nambiar, this movie is being produced by Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala. The cast includes a fresh pairing of Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. While not many details are out there, we only know that it’ll be directed by Abhishek Varman for whom this will be a debut outing.

Gulaab Gang

when March/April (tentatively) Another chance to see Madhuri Dixit on big screen after Dedh Ishqiya that releases today, Gulaab Gang is based on a faction of women activists, all donned in pink saris, fighting against social injustices meted out

Untitled film on Mary Kom

when June Considered to be a biopic on Indian boxer Mary Kom, this untitled film is being produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and directed by Omung Kumar. With the previous successes of biopics such as Paan Singh Tomar and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, we are expecting this one to be a path-breaking movie as well.

P.K.

when June 2013 ended with Aamir Khan in Dhoom 3 and it is surprising that we’ll be seeing the super-picky star on the big screen again this year. He has teamed up with his 3 Idiots

when October After entertaining one and all in Barfi, the mind blowing combination of Anurag Basu and Ranbir Kapoor is back with Jagga Jasoos. The movie is a comedy-mystery film directed by Anurag Basu and produced under the banner of Picture Shuru Productions, a joint production company by Ranbir Kapoor and Anurag Basu. It features Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif in leading roles and also features Govinda as Ranbir Kapoor’s step-father.

Bombay Velvet

when December The first film of a trilogy, as planned by Anurag Kashyap, Bombay Velvet is the story of how the city became a metropolis, set against the backdrop of love, greed, violence and jazz. Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma come together to share screen space as lovers whose lives intermingle with the evolution of the city of Bombay, through the ’50s to early ’70s. Just the pairing of Kashyap and Kapoor has got our cinematic tongues salivating. December never seemed so far away.

ripura born artist Nanda Das will be showcasing his recent work at Tao Art Gallery this month. With his second solo exhibition at the gallery, the photo realist painter is exhibiting a series inspired by Bombay and the sky, along with a dash of water and the city’s empty skyline. Aptly titled Sold Out Skyline, the collection is about the dissonance and disorientation of urban life, giving skyscapes a beautiful and visual characteristic. « store review: jAsAni jewellery lounge & lAkmÉ Absolute sAlon

A lavish rendezvous >> Jasani may seem a little cramped when you enter, but you’ll eventually realise that it is just right for the personal environment they aim to create

Where Dia Man Exports Pvt. Ltd. 3rd Floor, Gandhi Mansion, Above South African Embassy, 20, Altamount Road contact 23514005

For high-end jewellery that still has a fun, youthful feel to it, Rhea Dhanbhoora suggests visiting Jasani Jewellery Lounge in South Mumbai

Y

ou could lose your way trying to find Jasani’s new Jewellery Lounge if you’re not well versed with the ins and outs of Altamount Road. Nestled comfortably in an old heritage building, walking in is a pretty big deal — more so because you can’t simply ‘walk in.’ There’s a guard outside who lets you in, swinging open the high wooden doors to reveal a cosy but opulent lounge. The space looks shiny and new, but has an undeniable vintage vibe that’s immediately apparent through the detailed mirrors, flooring and homely feel. Although intimidating, once you’re in, it’s as comfortable as can be with a friendly atmosphere, smiling faces and dazzling jewels. They were hosting a Cherry High Tea when I visited, complete with giant cupcakes and delicious shots

>> Their bridal collection is dominated by precious stones

of cherry tea, adorned with paper umbrellas. There are sofas to sit on while you wait your turn to browse through their collection. Although the space seems small at first, there’s enough room to peer through everything they have on display, try on a few pieces of bling and talk to the friendly staff about the inspiration behind each piece. Jasani houses three collections: Classic, Bridal and Urban Chic. Urban Chic seems to be their main focus at the moment and the stylish party collection reminded me of Swarovski, which was both good and bad. Good, because the collection was pretty and decidedly edgy enough so as to make fine jewellery more fun. Bad, because being fine jewellery, everything cost nearly over a lakh, so it was hard to imagine wearing it to board meetings or parties as their tagline suggests. The collection includes pieces with colourful gemstones and incorporates rose gold, tassels, white and yellow gold and Gatsbyesque influences. The diamonds and gemstones are all set in beautiful pieces so if you can afford it, there’s no reason not to pick them up. For a casual shopper though, you might have to be content with

Absolutely greAt!

lusting over the pretty pieces. I tried on a pair of drop earrings that I found hard to part with at the end of my visit. Their Classic collection is in no way boring — all the pieces have naturally coloured diamonds and by classic, we’re quite sure they meant regal. There are the typical pieces — from tennis bracelets and studs, to wedding rings and necklaces. Everything is impeccably designed and this easily took the cake as my second favourite collection. Third, at the lounge as well as on my list, was their Bridal collection. Everything is gorgeous, with rose cut diamonds, emeralds, rubies, pearls, traditional designs and bridal trousseaus. Their bespoke bridal services (where the bride and her family are serviced and adorned with jewels at the lounge) is nice and there’s a hint of wearability to most of the designs. But, the collection was overshadowed by the other great jewellery on display. If you’re looking for wedding jewellery though, this is the place you want to go to. Overall, Jasani is a great location for high-end, fine jewellery. With modern designs and great service, if you’re looking for something fancy, Jasani is the place to visit.

Glynda Alves gives you her verdict on the newly opened Lakmé Absolute Salon in Bandra

T

o be honest, Lakmé Absolute Salon looks a little intimidating from the outside. The clear glass doors, high ceilings and black and white interiors are eye-catching, but make you feel like you need to dress up to enter. The photoshoot that was going on outside on the patio didn’t do much to ease nerves either. Everything here seems so… professional. But, that’s exactly what they want for their clients. To experience the chaos, flurry, creativity and professionalism that goes into a runway show. The salon is made to mirror the backstage of a runway show. Spotlights shine down on a central “runway,” there are wide spaces for customers and stylists to sashay across and fun elements which channel the imagination that Lakmé Fashion Week is all about. Dotting the salon are lovely black and white images that capture the behind-the-scenes action at LFW. The 2,000 square feet salon is divided into a few sections. There’s the main area where you can sit and take a look at the menu and consult with their in-house experts. Then, there’s the hair section where they cut, colour and style. Moving to the back, you’ll find there are many small nooks that specialise in different things. We loved the pedicure station that’s calm and you’re ensured privacy with the rows and rows of vibrant nail colours on display. They also have another

>> The 2,000 sq. ft. salon has been conceptualised on the runway shows. (In the picture) The Prive room at the salon

consultation area, a massage room and yet another luxurious massage room that’s attached to a Prive room that they use for the stars. What we also liked was that they sell products here. You’ll find Lakmé (but of course) as well as harder to source brands such as Dermalogica, Rene Furterer and Sothys. With such a professional outlook, we expected the prices to be nothing short of exorbitant. But, we were really surprised. The prices are on par with other salons with a basic pedicure and blow dry both priced at `700. They’ve also got other more elaborate services such as hair care rituals and body care services. We judge a salon by their basic blow dry and we have to say that we were rather impressed. My stylist made me feel comfortable and after a relaxing wash, she got to work. It was quick, professional and best of all, lasted a good three days. And while it may seem a little daunting at first, the staff is really sweet and even gives you styling tips for after you’ve left the salon. So, should Lakmé be your go-to for a glam do? Absolutely! ndheri is steadily catching up with Bandra when it comes to upping its ante in the F&B department. Taking cue from the rising demand in this area, the popular al-fresco establishment of Bandra, The Big Bar & Café, chose to open its second branch in Andheri. We visited on the fourth working day of the bar and were surprised to find that by the time it was 10pm, The Big Bang was moderately full. Logistically speaking, there are not many changes in the Andheri version in comparison to the Bandra one — both have two al-fresco sections, similar flooring, furnishings, menu and playlist. However, step inside and you’ll see the differences. Situated inside a twofloor bungalow, this Big Bang counterpart is mellow (unlike its loud Bandra cousin) because of the sections and crannies divided by walls (we like!) It’s also cosier and duller — the car headlights and the bottle installation on the ceiling above the ground floor bar serve as the only pieces of décor here. However, we wouldn’t dismiss their interiors for we were told to expect some hardcore graffiti on the large, empty white walls in the coming months. While the menu is mostly the same, there are a few new additions such as Mini Sliders, Grilled Fish with Mustard Lemon Sauce and Basil Garlic Paneer Tikka. With a cocktail menu that has regular concoctions such as Cosmopolitan, Caprioskas and others, we ordered a classic Long Island Iced Tea (`400) and Sangria (`350). The Iced Tea here, while many bars give a bitter spin to it, here it was not too tart but also provided a potent alcohol kick. The white wine based Sangria didn’t fare well, with its too-soft apple pieces doing nothing to make it fruity or summery. Crisper fruits dunked into the drink would have been better. Moving over to food, we ordered Basil Garlic

Kashmir on a plate >> We love the curtains that partition each section in Poush. We started our meal with a traditional Kashmiri tea called Qahwa (inset)

Paneer Tikka (`250), BBQ Potato Skins (`270), Grilled Fish with Mustard Lemon Sauce (`350) and Specialty Mini Burgers (`330). Cottage cheese fans will love these super soft tikkas, which are made in-house and marinated in delectable cream, flavoured with basil and garlic. The Potato Skins are chunks of chicken coated with BBQ sauce, stuffed in potato shells with cheddar and sour cream on the side — a delicious dish that’s not to be missed. The Grilled Fish was fish fillet beaten into egg, coated in bread crumbs and is served with mustard lemon sauce and fries. The fish was too dry for us, but the sauce deserves special mention for being absolutely lip-smacking. The burgers were perfect bar food with four variations — potato roesti, harisa grilled paneer, jalapeno & cheese and falafel. Falafel being the best, jalapeno was a cheesy delight as well, with the potato roesti being the least impressive and a little bland. Expect many new additions in the coming days — you’ll find a specialised pizza menu, live events and inspired by the experimental trend that has taken over most kitchens in the city’s restaurants, a liquor ice-cream menu which will be curated by a chef from the US. In comparison to our last outing at the Bandra branch, we noticed that the quality of food is a few notches higher here. This move can only add to the popularity of this bar and café which has a knack at being a hit, largely because of its affable open air sections. With more and more restaurants catering to regional cuisine, Shirley Mistry tells you if this new outlet of Poush - Essence of Kashmir, packs a punch

eing someone who has only heard amazing things about Kashmiri food but never had the opportunity to sit down for a traditional meal, I was excited to review Poush’s new outlet. Somewhere between the noisy food court and arcade at Phoenix Market City are a few restaurants, one of which is Poush, identifiable by its white wood exterior. They have regular chairs, sofas and low-cushioned seating where you can put your feet up and settle down for a Kashmiri feast, almost shikara like. The tables are separated from each other by curtains. Poush also serves Kashmiri Pandit cuisine which is rare. We opted for the Trami, a set meal that has a mix of dishes and is a great option for those experimenting with the cuisine. The half Trami (`1,500) is enough for two people, while the full (`3,000) is adequate for four. We started with the delightful Qahwa, a traditional tea infused with slivers of almonds, saffron and a touch of honey. The first platter had four starters with rice in the centre, even though the rice isn’t meant to be eaten with the starters. First up was the Nadier Palak Tikki, a cutlet with lotus stem and spinach. Although tasty, the spinach overpowered everything else, obstructing the mild lotus stem flavour. Next was the Fried >> The starters came served on a platter but fell short of our expectations in terms of taste

Chicken, a dry preparation in a spicy paste — the chicken was a tad tough. The third starter was the Karbagah, fried mutton. Minimally spiced, the lamb melted in the mouth and fared better than the others. The best though, was the Methi Maaz. Like a sabzi, this was methi cooked with onions, tomatoes and spices with shredded mutton. The creamy preparation was truly lipsmacking. Moving on to the main course, the Rajma was milder and more flavourful than we have grown up with. The Goshtaba (springy minced mutton balls), in a light yogurt gravy, with aromatic whole spices, was delicious. However, the Roganjosh stole the show. It had the right balance of spices, the meat fell off the bone and although oily, it had us scraping every last drop of gravy. As both the starters and the main course arrived together, by the time we got to the main course, the rice and rotis had gone stone cold. Although the menu said the dessert was Phirni, we were served Shufta, a melee of dried fruits and coconut steeped in saffron sugar syrup. For me, the dessert was cloyingly sweet and devoid of any real flavour. However, my companion loved it. Poush was an enjoyable experience, but they need to work on quicker service, better presentation and the bothersome fruit flies.

>> The view from Otranto is breathtaking

When you think of Italy perhaps you think of Rome, Milan and Venice. Now, Marcellus Baptista would like you to think of Puglia (or Apulia, as it’s known in English)

W

here’s Puglia, you may ask? It’s the southeastern-most region, ‘the heel on the boot of Italy’ as they say, bordering the Adriatic Sea in the east, the Ionian Sea to the southeast and the Strait of Otranto and Gulf of Taranto in the south. I recently discovered this Puglia paradise, after a four-hour-long drive from Naples to Lecce (known as the Florence of the south). After checking in at Hotel Leone di Messapia, it was time to dine at the spacious Ristorante Bella ’Mbriana, for an eat treat that included local orecchiette pasta with turnips. Lecce, I discovered, is awash with baroque good looks and houses numerous churches, as well as the gorgeous Roman amphitheatre and Piazza del Duomo. My next stop was Galantina, which is considered to be the birthplace of the pisticciotto, a typical Salento pastry. Here, I explored the baroque old town, caught a glimpse of the famous frescoes inside the Basilica of Saint Catherina d’Alessandria and enjoyed a wine-tasting experience at the two century-old Valle dell’Asso. My discovery of Puglia continued at Otranto, the easternmost city of Italy, known as the ‘bridge’ that connects the country with the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. A panoramic view along the Adriatic coast washed over me from Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca, where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet. Finger-foods of calamari, baby octopus and cuttlefish formed the delightful lunch at Hotel Montecallini, perched over the San Gregorio bay. One of the highlights of my trip was a visit to a masseria, a typical farmhouse in

Frantoio, I tasted four different types of olive oil, from sweet to strong, poured over pieces of bread. I also learnt about the olive oil cosmetics, organic jams and liqueurs made of olive leaves that the region is famous for. I spent the night at Ostuni, known as the ‘white city,’ since its old town is entirely filled with stark white houses, narrow alleys and winding stairways leading to the cathedral overlooking the city. I was staying at Albergo la Terra, with a number of quaint shops, bars and cafés nearby. The next morning saw me in the village of Alberobello, a UNESCO site, which consisted of stone-stacked dwellings with conical roofs known as trulli. The sights around me made for a pretty picture postcard. The last leg of my pleasant Puglia experience was at the city of Bari. While I was there, I took an extensive old town tour to the majestic Castle of Bari, the Cathedral of San Sabino and the Basilica of San Nicola, which I was told, housed the human remains of Saint Nicholas (the patron saint of the sailors). Here I was put up at the historic Oriente Hotel, which is home to several celebrities and some of the greatest opera tenors and theatre artistes, who often perform at the world-famous Teatro Petruzzelli right next door. I had a great time here, as the multitude of shops and the beautiful waterfront promenade beckoned me. >> The Lungomare waterfront promenade in My last dinner in Puglia was at Bistrot Bari was beautiful (top) and the Trulli Oriente with cheese, risotto with salmon dwellings in Alberobello are a sight to and a fillet of sea bass topped with see (bottom) seasoned fruits, complemented by wine, of the middle of highly cultivated fields. course! And then it was time to say ‘Grazie’ Amidst the old-world charm of Masseria il as I left the picturesque Puglia region.

JAYANTABHAI KI LUV STORY

Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story is a Bollywood crime romance film directed by Vinnil Markan, and produced by Kumar Taurani under Tips Music Films. The film stars Vivek Oberoi opposite Neha Sharma in lead roles. The theatrical trailer unveiled on 11 January 2013, whilst the film released on 14 February 2013. THE PRESENCE

In this darkly romantic ghost story, a woman (Academy Award Winner Mira Sorvino) travels to an isolated cabin where she finds herself stalked by an apparition (Shane West, “A Walk To Remember”) who has come to inhabit her space as his own. With the unexpected arrival of the woman’s boyfriend (Golden Globe nominee Justin Kirk, “Weeds”), the dark spirit’s haunting grows more obsessive. Soon the woman begins to exhibit weirdly irrational behavior as the thin line between sanity and possession begins to unravel. A stunning directorial debut from Tom Provost, “The Presence” is grounded in terrific performances, beautiful cinematography, a lush musical score, and a Hitchcockian style that explores the idea of pure cinematic storytelling. Zee Studi o, 8.40 p.m.

BANDIT QUEEN

The movie tells the story of the bandit queen Phoolan Devi who was sent to prison in 1983 and got free in 1994. During five years she was prosecuted by the Indian police and turned into a legend (like a modern Robin Hood) by the Indian press. Although the press tended to make her the optimal hero with blue eyes, dark hair, being tall and beautiful she was in reality an average Indian which makes it hard for the movie to fulfill the expectations of the audience and tell the truth at the same time. Later in her life,She entered into the politics and was assassinated in 2001. Filmy, 9 p.m.

The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 40 points. Sentiment was bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 31 were losers, while 19 were gainers. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 8.07%. This change is moderate and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

otwithstanding the stock market in 2014 logging one of the worst New Year starts since 1996, the year heralds the beginning of a bull cycle in India and the Sensex may scale the 24,000peak by December, Deutsche Equities said yesterday. The Sensex has shed over 450 points in 2014 so far, making it the second worst New Year show in nearly two decades, but the leading foreign brokerage is hopeful of Indian equities touching new peaks in coming months. “Year 2014 will herald the beginning of a bull market in the country and we are setting the Sensex target at 24,000 and an imputed Nifty target of 7,148, implying an upside of 16 per cent from the current levels. “The Sensex would trade at a PE of 15.9 times which is broadly in line with the past five-year average,” Deutsche Equities India Research Head Abhay Laijawala told reporters. Although the domestic economy has bottomed out, a recovery is likely to be gradual, showing a perceptible improvement only in the second half of the next fiscal, once the private sector investment cycle starts to revive, he said. “While we are convinced that economic growth and earnings cycle have bottomed out, the pace of recovery will be crucially determined by the outcome of the national elections, which may form the fulcrum for investor sentiment. “For equity markets, the 2014 outlook will hence hinge on the ability of either of the two national parties (BJP and Congress) to anchor a stable coalition. We think whoever gets at least 180 seats may form a coalition Government,” he said. The year is likely to see many an inflection point for the country and its equity market, Laijawala said, as he sees domestic investor disenchantment with equities ebbing. A subdued outlook for oil and gold prices further sweeten the investment thesis, he said. On sectoral picks, he said “our biggest “overweight’s” are IT services and banks with consumer staples being our largest

“underweight”. On the risks to economic growth, Laijawala said the biggest threat comes from an unfavourable election outcome leading to a fragmented coalition Government. On the external front, any sign of a faster-thananticipated tightening by the US Fed will be a source of investor concern.

Foreign Investors Get Exit Option By A Business Reporter

R

elaxing FDI norms, the Reserve Bank of India has given foreign investors an option to exit their investments by selling their holdings of equity or debt. “It is expected that this relaxation will facilitate greater FDI flows into the country,” the RBI said in a statement. According to the modified norms, foreign direct investment (FDI) contracts can now have optionality clauses, which allow investors to exit, subject to the conditions of minimum lock-in period and without any assured returns. Until now, only equity shares or compulsorily and mandatorily convertible preference shares or debentures could be issued to person’s resident outside India under the FDI policy and these In a separate notification, the RBI said banks may include a close NRI relative as a joint holder in an individual resident’s existing or new bank account on an “either or survivor” basis. Such accounts will be treated as resident bank accounts for all purposes and all regulations applicable to a resident bank account will be applicable. Cheques, instruments, remittances, cash, card or any other proceeds belonging to the NRI close relative will not be eligible for credit to this account, it said. Such joint account holder facility may be extended to all types of resident accounts, including savings bank accounts, it added.

Annual Auto Sales Witness First Decline In 11 Years By A Business Reporter

A

nnual car sales in India declined for the first time in 11 years in 2013, posting a 9.59% dip, as the auto industry reeled under a prolonged demand slump due to the economic slowdown. According to the Society of Indian Automobile Industry (SIAM), domestic car sales last year fell to 18,07,011 units from 19,98,703 units in the previous year. “The decline in annual car sales that we witnessed in 2013 was the first time after 2002. The negative sentiments have deepened due to the current state of the economy, SIAM Director General Vishnu Mathur told reporters. He said high inflation, fuel prices and interest rates - which resulted in high cost of ownership - have affected sentiment. Highlighting the prolonged slowdown, SIAM said car sales in India

have been in positive territory only for three of the past 17 months - October 2012, August and September 2013.The industry hasn’t yet bottomed out, Mathur said, adding that other segments such as commercial vehicles are badly hurt due to lack of mining activities and stalled infrastructure projects. We expect some rebound happening in commercial vehicles in the second half of the year, Mathur said, adding that it could have some ruboff on passenger cars as well. In the April-December 2013 period, the industry saw the launch of 22 new car models, 40 new variants and 10 model refreshes, intended to bring excitement in the market, he said. In December, domestic car sales declined 4.52% to 1,32,561 units from 1,38,835 units in the same month in 2012. Market leader Maruti Suzuki India

posted a 6.4% increase in domestic sales at 73,155 units as against 68,729 units in the same month of the previous year. Hyundai Motor India sales were also up 6.2% at 28,320 units compared to 26,651 units in the year-ago month. Tata Motors saw its sales crash by 41.92% to 6,537 units in December from 11,257 units. Japanese car maker Honda posted a 29.27% increase to 5,484 units as against 4,242 units. Utility vehicle major Mahindra & Mahindra saw its sales drop by 26.93% to 15,881 units from 21,735 units in December 2012. Total sales of commercial vehicles were down by 25.53% to 46,757 units from 62,786 units in the year-ago period, SIAM said. Total sale of vehicles across categories registered a decline of 1.21% to 14,31,632 units in December 2013 as against 14,49,203 units in the same month of 2012, it added.

BUSINESS BRIEFS January IIP Could Be Moderately Higher

“There have been some early indications of improvement in consumer demand as measured by Zyfin’s Consumer Outlook Index for December. If this trend sustains in the near future, the looming risk of rising inventory can be averted lending itself into a steep recovery in industrial activity. We need to keep a close watch on how consumer demand evolves in 2014 says Debopam Chaudhuri, Vice President of Research and Development at ZyFin Research. He was referring to Zyfin’s Business Cycle Indicator (BCI) for the month of December 2013. The index, which is a lead indicator to the IIP, has registered a year on year growth of 4.7% as against 4.2% registered in November. After registering its lowest growth of FY’13-14 in November, there has been a slight uptick this month. ZyFin Research expects 2014 to start with a moderate expansion in industrial activity.

International Air Cargo Demand Grows 6.1%

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released figures which show a 6.1% growth in demand (measured in freight tonne kilometers or FTK) for air freight in November 2013 over the same month in the previous year. November’s performance is an improvement on the 4.4% year-on-year demand expansion recorded in October. This continues an improvement trend in the weak air cargo markets which has been developing over 2013.All regions reported growth except for Latin America and Africa. The strongest performing region was the Middle East where carriers reported a 16.5% improvement. Significantly, Asia-Pacific carriers, who account for some 40% of the market, reported 4.9% growth, more than doubling the 1.8% growth of October.

FAM which represents 7500 associations has through a letter sought the Congress president’s appointment to intervene in an issue that has hurt business in Maharashtra.

States To Get Freedom To Spend Under Flexi-Funds

The government has issued guidelines for ‘Flexi-Funds’, which will provide greater freedom to states to utilise allocated funds for implementation centrally sponsored schemes (CSS) relating to social development and poverty alleviation. The guidelines, which were mooted by the Planning Commission to improve the performance of flagship schemes of the government, will come into effect from next fiscal. As per the guidelines, the central ministries will be required to keep aside at least 10 per cent of the planned budget for each CSS as Flexi-Funds.

OilMin To Move Cabinet For Reducing Subsidy Burden

Oil Ministry plans to go to the Cabinet seeking a minimum USD 65 per barrel price for state oil and gas explorers like ONGC to help bring 70 million tons of oil to production, Oil Secretary Vivek Rae said yesterday. Speaking on sidelines of Petrotech pre-event conference, Rae said the USD 40-42 per barrel net price realised by ONGC after paying for fuel subsidies, is barely enough to meet its costs.

CAD To Drop To $50 Bn This Fiscal Had touched an all-time high of USD 88.2 billion in 2012-13 By A Business Reporter

E

ncouraged by rise in exports and decline in gold imports, Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram said the current account deficit (CAD) in India will come down to about USD 50 billion in the current financial year, 2013 - 14. CAD, which is the difference between inflow and outflow of foreign exchange, touched an all-time high of USD 88.2 billion or 4.8% of GDP in 2012-13. “Exports are doing fairly well ... month on month there might be slight blip here and there, but draw a line it will be straight and secular. It is not curving down. We are quite confident that CAD should be around USD 50 billion for the financial year, Mayaram said. Adding that the trade deficit, which is the difference between export

and import, has narrowed to USD 9.2 billion in November, from USD 10.6 billion in October. The CAD in the first half (AprilSeptember) of the current fiscal came down to USD 26.9 billion (3.1% of GDP), from USD 37.9 billion (4.5% of GDP) in H1 of 2012-13. Declining gold imports has also contributed to improvement in the CAD, which dropped to 1.2% in Q2, as against 4.9% in Q1. Gold imports, according to Mayaram, fell to 19.3 tonnes in November, from 162 tonnes in May. In order to restrict inward shipment of gold, the government and the RBI had announced various measures, including hiking import duty to 10%. With the decline of imports, there is a clamour that the government should ease the curbs as they are encouraging smuggling.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JANUARY 10, 2014

Rajesh V. Gaur and Suneel V. Gaur, chronicle his life and times.

I

n a career that straddled five decades, ace film maker Shakti Samanta directed numerous hits. A straightforward man, his clarity of thought could never be disputed and he was known for being a man of few words, particularly with people he was not comfortable with. Remarkably, this unassuming man was responsible for spinning skeins of cinematic magic. Born in Burdwan, now in West Bengal, on January 13, 1924, Samanta grew up in his uncle’s home in Dehra Dun. He was bitten by the acting bug at an early age, and with little money and big dreams, he started working as a school teacher in Dapoli. Samanta would make weekly trips to Mumbai during which he made visited numerous studios, including Bombay Talkies. As it turned out, Bombay Talkies at the time was overflowing with Bengalis and before long, he met Ashok Kumar, a top star at Bombay Talkies, who advised him to become an assistant director and not chase stardom. After a few odd jobs, Samanta became an assistant director to writer Vrajendra Gaur who was making a film called ‘Kasturi’ in 1953. Gaur and Samanta shared a tremendous rapport and despite ‘Kasturi’ doing well, Gaur did not direct another film. Instead he passed on subsequent offers to Samanta, thus giving

the latter his break as an independent director with ‘Bahu’ (1955). However, it was the super-hit crime thriller ‘Howrah Bridge’ (1958) with Madhubala seductively swaying to ‘Aaiye Meherban’, and Shammi Kapoor playing a double role in ‘China Town’ (1962) that actually established Samanta’s credentials as a filmmaker. It is said that being a shrewd producer Samanta never stuck with a hero who started sliding down the ladder of success. In the 1960s he helmed a string of successful films with Shammi Kapoor in the lead. He then worked with the new superstar

ho says that only top stars can sell a Bollywood movie? Ask movie and audio tycoon Bhushan Kumar and debutante director wife Divya Khosla Kumar and they will dare to differ. With superhit musical movies like ‘Aashiqui-2’, starring newcomers, to their credit, Bhushan has full confidence in their latest venture ‘Yaariyan’ which is a romantic entertainer for college students. “True, ‘Yaariyan’ does not boast of established celeb-names, but our actual stars are the story, the script, the youthful characters, the classy songs and the awesome locations,” insists director Divya, whose metic-

ulous efforts are evident in the movie. Among the cast of ‘Yaariyan’ is ‘Miss Earth’ Nicole Faria from Bangalore, who plays the sexy Jia and is supposedly the centre of ‘distraction’ in the movie. Like most models from the South, Nicole could not speak fluent Hindi, and also had an accent. Despite this, her debut movie was quite a cake-walk. Recalls the dusky Nicole, “When I got a message from the associate director of ‘Yaariyaan’ asking me to appear for a screen-test, I initially dismissed it as a crazy prank. My mother felt it was real and that I should respond. She was right, and I ended up giving seven auditions, till I was accepted.” Wasn’t she jittery while shooting for her first schedule? “As a winner of beauty pageants, I am used to frequently facing the camera, so it wasn’t an issue. For my character Jia, Divya conducted an extensive workshop for all of us and shot all the portions on a handy-cam, before we actually started the shoots. The first schedule I shot for was the pyjama party song ‘ABCD’, which gave me the extra-confidence while enacting intense scenes.” Did she face starry tantrums from any of her female co-stars? “Our roles were so well-defined that it was smooth sailing. Frankly, we lived up to the movie title and became buddies. Off-screen it was like an extended picnic on the sets,” shrugs the sultry, glam-girl who is hell-bent on making it big.

Rajesh Khanna. And after Khanna’s career fizzled, Samanta segued to working with Amitabh Bachchan in ‘The Great Gambler’ (1979) and ‘Barsaat Ki Ek Raat’ (1981). It is to Samanta’s credit that could work his alchemy even with newcomers. Sharmila Tagore in ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’, Rajesh Khanna in ‘Aradhana’, Helen in ‘Howrah Bridge’ and Moushumi, got their first taste of Hindi film stardom, thanks to his films.” After making crime and action films, Samanta entered the third phase of his career: making emotional dramas. ‘Aradhana’ was unforgettable, amongst other things for Rajesh Khanna’s performance which propelled him to superstardom, and the songs by Kishore Kumar which took the singer to unparalleled heights of playback singing. ‘Kati Patang’, ‘Amar Prem’ and ‘Anuraag’ went on to become big hits, thus making Samanta a topnotch film maker. By the late 1970s, Samanta had run of a hits and misses. He tried working again with Rajesh Khanna after a seven-year break with ‘Awaaz’ (1984) and ‘Alag Alag’ (1985), but the Samanta-KhannaBurman magic failed this time. After the Jeetendra-Rekha starrer ‘Geetanjali’ flopped in 1993, Samanta quit Hindi films. And though he is no more, his memories remain strong.

Super model Hasleen Kaur is all set to sizzle on the silver screen in the Suneel Darshan production ‘Karle Pyaar Karle’ where she is paired opposite Darshan’s son, Shiv. We spoke to Hasleen about her tinsel town debut and this is what she said. By Sandeep Hattangadi

Do you feel ‘Karle Pyaar Karle’ is the right launch for you? Nothing could be better than a Suneel Darshan film since he is the filmmaker who has launched so many stars like Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta and has also made several films with Karisma Kapoor.

What is the film all about? It is about two rebellious youngsters who fall in love.IplayPreet, whoisinlovewitharebelKabir played by Shiv Darshan. Kabir has been released from a juvenile home and has come to my town after 12 years along with his mother. Itisthenthatouradolescentloveisre-kindled. What was it like working with Shiv? He is such a nice guy and he made me so comfortable throughout the shoot of the film especially in the romance and action scenes.

How was Rajesh Pandey as a director? He really pushed me hard to give perfect shots and tried his level best to make a debutant actor like me do a good job of playing a difficult role.

Who is your role model in the industry? I have always liked Kajol since she lights up the screen whenever she is on it.

Item girl tag derogatory and silly: Malaika A

ctress Malaika Arora Khan, whose popular dance numbers like ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’, ‘Munni Badnam Hui’ have raised the bar for her contemporaries to match her style, finds the item girl tag ‘derogatory and silly’. “I don’t like the term ‘item girl’. Why not look at it (item song) as a special song that is creating a hype and entertainment? I find it derogatory and silly,” Malaika told PTI in an interview. Malaika, whose song ‘Munni Badnam Hui’ in Bollywood film

‘Dabangg’ (2010) was a hit, says nothing interesting has come up for her in terms of special dance numbers. The actress is back to judge yet another season of the reality show, ‘India’s Got Talent’. “Last time, I was there for half the season. This time I am getting the feel of everything as I am there from beginning. Previously, I was there from the elimination and it was tough. This time it is an insane amount of work. In a day we have 20-25 acts minimum,” Malaika said.

Enjoyed playing Begum Para: Madhuri B

ollywood diva Madhuri Dixit says playing Begum Para, the new femme fatale in Abhishek Chaubey’s ‘Dedh Ishqiya’, was challenging but fun. “It was a challenging role because I could not go overboard with the character or underplay it. The more complex a character, the tauter a performance needs to be. Playing Begum Para was like a tightrope walk. It had to be just right and I had to constantly keep that in mind,” Madhuri told PTI. The 46-year-old actress, however, did not find it difficult to master the nuances or the Urdu diction of her character.

“The diction was not a problem as I have done a little bit of Urdu as Chandramukhi in ‘Devdas’. My priority was getting the performance right.” The film, a sequel to 2010 ‘Ishqiya’, is slated to release tomorrow. Both Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi are reprising their roles as Khalujaan and Babban, while Huma Qureshi is the other new face in the movie. Madhuri agreed to be a part of the sequel because she loved the “unapologetic way” Abhishek presented Vidya Balan’s character of a beautiful, willful woman in ‘Ishqiya’. “I had seen ‘Ishqiya’ and was very impressed with the way a woman’s character was etched out in it. There was no apology for the way Vidya was presented, which I found interesting”, she says.

hile the year settles in and the deluge of films starts, just some off-the-cuff thoughts: *The silly season is upon us, when the dozens of awards events kick off, supposedly rewarding excellence, but actually just making the trophy maker rich. At least this year there are five films that deserve to be nominated, most years the list is padded with also-rans. Who is interested in pictures of actors getting in and out of airports? Why don’t the photographers who are allotted this beat go on strike, since most international flights arrive and depart at odd hours? It’s just possible that the stars themselves click and send out these pictures. Makes them look like busy jet-setters. Even worse are pictures of stars visiting temples… can’t they, and other people, even pray in peace? One point below are photos of stars at the hospital… can’t they, and other people, be sick in private? The absolute pits are photos of stars ‘doing good’ – playing with sick children or handing out gifts to the needy; shouldn’t charity be done without publicity? Isn’t it absurd the amount of money stars are paid to attend functions and perform their item numbers? Don’t the people

spending these obscene amounts of money get into the tax net? The net world is abuzz with outrage at Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Mallika Sherawat, Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra and other Bollywood celebrities landing up at Uttar Pradesh’s Saifai village. When the poor are dying of cold and hunger, will film stars dancing keep them alive? Why are stars at the beck

and call of politicians and is there no limit to vulgar showmanship? It’s all very well for an actor or actress to beat the competition, but shouldn’t some credit be given to the filmmakers who helped them get there? Some of the good writers, directors and technicians are almost faceless, while the empty vessels made the most noise. The sad fact is that these days audiences don’t decide on the best talent on show in films, the powerful PR and Marketing teams do… with the right kind of clout, anybody can be kept in the public eye... sometimes it’s as easy as taking clothes off. Just because a couple of offbeat films did well, there is no reason to tom-tom about the changing face of Bollywood and the maturing of our cinema. The reins are still in the hands of the men (and very few women) who control the money. To them, the big opening crores are worth more than the respect due to an artist; as a result, there are hardly any cinema artists left, just bean counters. And yet, the filmmaker best known internationally is Satyajit Ray. That should tell us something.

When the makers of the films paid Pooja a visit in the hospital, she asked them to go ahead with the film with some other actress and not delay the schedule because of her, however, they refused point blank. The filmmakers told Pooja that they only wanted her to be a part of the two films. Pooja, who was last seen opposite Vidyut Jammwal in ‘Commando’, will need some time to recover and therefore the entire schedule of her films has been pushed by three months.

Irrfan teams up with Big B I

rrfan Khan, who turned 47 on January 7, is all set to conquer new peaks in 2014. This year, the incredibly adventurous actor is all set to start new films with superdirectors Nishikant Kamath, Vishal Bhardwaj, Sujoy Ghosh and Shoojit Sircar. Most exciting of all is the Shoojit Sircar's film which brings Irrfan face-to-face with Big B for the first time. Says Irrfan "Can you believe it, during all these years in the film industry, I've never worked with Bachchan saab or Naseer saab! Lekin script bhi toh honi chahiye! The screenplay has to justify our coming together. Finally I am working with Bachchan saab in Shoojit's film." At the moment Irrfan is shooting for a film with the ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’ director Nishikant Kamath. Says Irrfan cryptically, “It's a project which we've been mulling over for some time. It's a political thriller about corruption and moral accountability, very topical very relevant to our times.” In Kamath's film, Irrfan shares screen space with Jimmy Sheirgill. Talking about his first time association with different actors this year, the actor says, “I suppose 2014 is my year of firsttime happenings. I'm working with Bachchan saab for the first time this year. I'll also be directed by Sujoy Ghosh for the first time in a film where I'll be paired with Vidya Balan for the first time. I am looking forward to that as well."

ARIES (March 21 - April 20): Be alert to the fresh offers that come along. There is a good proposal in the form of job or assignment, and if you negotiate terms and conditions deftly you will settle a favorable deal. You could be in trouble for not fulfilling certain obligations required of you at home. Get on with what you have to do and other things will fall into place.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): Attend to your routine work and avoid bringing about any changes right now. Try to be practical and don't give in to emotions because there is really very little you can do about it. Follow the trends; resisting will only lead to frustration and disappointment. There will be moments of leisure and romance with the one you love.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): You will have a very busy today, though you may not achieve much. If you have to wait a bit longer for rewards, it would be worth it. Be careful when signing agreements or contracts. You have tendency to trust the wrong kind of people. Remain alert. Your mate may caution you on the choice of friends. It may be difficult for you to see reason at the moment.

CANCER (June 21 - July 21): Some problems you have been facing in your business are likely to be sorted out very soon which will add to your enthusiasm and energy. You will be in a much stronger position from now onwards. You will now be able to overcome obstacles that have been standing in your way. Look forward to happy times. Keep a check on indulgence for it could affect health.

LEO (July 22 - August 21): Use money wisely as there are extra demands. You need to adjust your budget. Ask for help if you need. You could miss out on an important tip for investment or work because of a communication problem. Be discreet when dealing with people as there could be misunderstanding. You will re-evaluate your relationship. It seems you have doubts about the sincerity of your beloved who is remaining aloof.

VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): Face up to the problem and work towards better understanding and accepting each other’s shortcomings rather than carp about each other. A willingness to change your perceptions rather than state of affairs will go a long way to help you achieve what you want. Togetherness with your mate or beloved is lackluster. It seems both of you are preoccupied with your individual problems.

LIBRA (September 22 - October 22): Financial gains and important dues will come your way. Life is full of things pleasant and unpleasant. You will respond magnificently to any crisis cropping up, whether family, social or pertaining to work. Genuine appreciation and understanding is bound to come your way. This is the time to make it up to your beloved and restore faith and confidence in those who love you.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): You are impatient and judgmental in your dealings. This can hurt others and will feel insulted. Try and avoid scenes, which can result in tension affecting you adversely. Be open-minded and do not base your decisions on suspicions. A disagreement over a small issue should be nipped in the bud. You have to be diplomatic with the way you deal with relationships and loved ones who could be hypersensitive about most things.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): You could land yourself in a difficult situation at work. Resourceful as you are, you will find a solution to your problems soon. You may have to reconsider an offer that had been made earlier. Those in government services can look forward to some favorable changes. Handle relationships with tact. A minor altercation could flare up and become ugly. You may end up saying things you would not normally. AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): A couple of different projects hold your fancy. Be careful if you are investing your funds in ventures that are speculative in nature. Nobody is impervious to the current trends in the market and you are not an exception. There could be misleading news that leads to losses. There is an air of secrecy and deception in a romantic association so be careful. Domestic issues should be tackled diplomatically so that the situation does not get out of hand.

CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): Backlog of work gets cleared and you will soon be in a position to accept new offers of work. The signing of a new contract with a foreign concern may require you to travel more frequently. Speculative trading will bring in extra money. You will be particularly lucky at a game of chance. If there is any misunderstandings give the other person the benefit of the doubt and begin again. Do not let hurt pride spoil things for you. PISCES (February 19 - March 20): You will be in a positive and aggressive frame of mind. Completing reports, preparing for meeting or seminar or exhibition, sale and purchase, are some of the activities of the day. You seem to be on the right track but watch out for a tendency to be overconfident. You will share moments of intimacy and togetherness with your beloved. If single and eligible you will now decide to settle down happily.

Quarter final entering crucial Pacer Thakur traps Maharashtra with crucial stage, says Rasool breakthroughs to put visitors on backfoot V

By Neil Joshi

M

UMBAI: It was brilliant bowling from the ever improving Shardul Thakur which dented the hopes of Maharashtra and brought Mumbai a step closer to cementing their place in the semi-finals as Maharashtra were seven wicket down with a deficit of 183 runs in the quarter final match of the Ranji Trophy played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. Hosts Mumbai, resuming from an overnight score of 284 for seven secured the upper hand as they went past the 400-run mark to have the psychological edge over the visitors on the green turf. Iqbal Abdulla [49 runs] and Zaheer Khan [39 runs] ensured that the team posted a decent score of 402 runs. The duo posted 62 runs for the eighth wicket which created a base for the hosts to go all out at the Maharashtra batsman. The visitors got off to a disastrous start with Shardul Thakur trapping the rival skipper Rohit Motwani for nought in his first over and then four overs later he sent the in-form Harshad Khadiwale packing for a disappointing four. It got worse for Maharashtra, as their last minute

Shardul Thakur is pumped up after claiming a rival scalp as skipper Zaheer Khan and his Mumbai teammates join in the celebration.

Match in balance as Rasool slams ton V

ADODARA: Skipper Parvez Rasool led from the front with a scintillating century as Jammu and Kashmir fought back gallantly to leave their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal match against strong contenders Punjab evenly poised on Thursday. In reply to Punjab’s first innings score of 304, Jammu and Kashmir rode on Rasool’s gutsy 103 off 137 balls before folding up for 277, conceding a slender first innings lead of 27 runs on the second day. J&K seamers Umar Nazir and Mohammed Mudhasir then struck two early blows to remove the in-form openers Jiwanjot Singh (8) and Manan Vohra (7) cheaply. At stumps, Punjab were struggling at 15 for 2, having an overall lead of 42. With Ranji quarter-finals being a five-day affair, there is every possibility that this slender first innings lead will be of little consequence as

TON UP: Parvez Rasool is more than happy on scoring a century.

OUT: Railways batsman A G Paunikar is dismissed by Bengal bowler Ashok Dinda (not in picture)

the match is expected to have an outright result with three full days left. The day belonged to Rasool, who showed that he is ready to go one up on Harbhajan as he hit 11 fours and a lovely six over deep mid-wicket off veteran India offspinner’s bowling. He completed his fifth first-class century with a couple of boundaries. The ton came off 131 balls. Rasool had two important partnerships. The first was a 81-run stand with in-form opener Adil Rishi (65) for the fourth wicket after J&K were reduced to 62 for 3. Rishi and Rasool carried the team to 141 before Yuvraj Singh trapped the opener leg before with an arm ball. Rishi hit nine fours and one six in his 108-ball innings. Rishi’s total

runs this season has gone up to 643 but Rasool on Thursday overtook him as he completed 650 runs in the current season. Once Rishi was out, Punjab got two quick wickets with Majid Dar edging one off pacer VRV Singh to Yuvraj in the slips and Hardeep Singh offering a simple return catch to opposition captain Harbhajan. At 168 for 6, Punjab were looking at a sizeable lead but Rasool started a swift counter-attack in company of Samiullah Beigh (37). The duo added 86 runs for the seventh wicket. Rasool’s valiant effort finally came to an end when Punjab’s Sandeep Sharma (4 for 46) bowled a fuller delivery that kept low and the J&K skipper misjudged the line of the delivery to get bowled.

inclusion in the side, Vijay Zol was cleaned up by Zaheer Khan to have them in dire straits. With three wickets down for 24, the Mumbai team were in a good position to dictate terms, even as Kedar Jadhav [51 runs] and Ankit Bawne [84 runs] tried to hold things together. Bawne even attempted to go on the offensive when he struck four boundaries in an over of Javed Khan. They partnership didn’t thrive long enough as Vishal Dhabolkar who was brought in to the attack during in the latter half of the evening struck. Jadhav didn’t trouble the scorers too much and walked back after scoring 51 runs when he nicked one to glovesman Tare. This wicket saw the floodgates open, as Thakur who was hitting the deck consistently, claimed another couple by scalping the dangerman Bawne. Four overs later, it was the turn of Vineet Indulkar to snaffle a superb catch in the slips to make it four-for Thakur as he dismissed Sangram Atitkar for eight. Brief Scores: Mumbai 402 all out in 116.3 overs [Iqbal Abdulla 49, Samad Fallah 4/103] lead Maharashtra 219/7 in 57.0 overs [Ankit Bawne 84, Kedar Jadhav 51, Shardul Thakur 4/62] by 183 runs.

ADODARA: J&K team skipper Parveez Rasool feels their quarter-final against Punjab has reached a crucial stage and the third day today will play an important role on the outcome of the match. Talking to media persons at the end of the second day’s play here, Rasool said: “I’m happy with my batting, I made 103 runs but I’m disappointed that my team’s efforts to take a first innings lead failed and we conceded a marginal 27 runs 1st innings lead to Punjab.” “At one stage, we thought of taking a vital lead over them. However, the way our bowlers dismissed the opening pair of Punjab in the second innings with a total of 15 runs, I am sure they will repeat the performance tomorrow as this pitch has been very helpful to the fast bowlers,” Rasool added. Rasool led from the front with a gutsy 103 off 137 balls as Jammu and Kashmir fought back gallantly to score 277 in reply to Punjab’s first innings score of 304. J&K then reduced Punjab to 15 for two in their second innings to leave their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal match evenly poised and se t for a crucial third day.

Rawat stands tall for Railways K

OLKATA:Railways’ experienced campaigner Mahesh Rawat proved to be the thorn in the flesh for Bengal as he stood tall with an unbeaten century to lead the visiting team’s recovery on day two of the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal here today. Propelled by Rawat’s unbeaten 105 in an undefeated 191-run partnership with Arindam Ghosh (78 batting) Railways ended day two at 233/5, trailing Bengal by only 84 runs with five wickets in hand. In reply to Bengal’s challenging first innings total of 317, Railways were tottering at 42/5 after losing three wickets for four runs just after lunch when Ashoke Dinda was firing on all cylinders with veteran Shib Shankar Paul giving a good back-up.

But the Railways wicketkeeperbatsman, counter-attacked Dinda with six successive classical boundaries before turning around the match for the visitors. The flurry of boundaries against Bengal’s strike bowler derailed the home side and it failed to recover from the slide. Luck too went in favour of Rawat, who survived a run-out scare when he was on 28. Barring this, it was a chance-less knock by Rawat and he executed his shots to perfection. Bengal’s bowling was reduced to a twopace attack in Dinda and Paul with Sourav Sarkar lacking in intensity. In no time, Rawat raced to his ninth 50-plus score from 10 matches this season, notching up his 28th first-class half century in 48 balls.

Abhimanyu Mithun, Vinay Kumar shine B

ANGALORE: Seamers Abhimanyu Mithun and R Vinay Kumar wreaked havoc as Karnataka reduced Uttar Pradesh to 221 for nine, giving themselves a good chance to grab first innings lead, on the second day of the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal match here today. Mithun was the most successful bowler with figures of four for 70 but Vinay was the most difficult as he picked up three wickets after conceding 49 runs in 18 overs. Mithun removed Prashant Gupa (0), Mohammad Kaif (0), Chawla (56) and Amit Mishra (4), while Vinay picked up Tanmay Srivastava (32), Mukul Dagar (13) and Eklavya Dwivedi (2).

Pacer H S Sharath and part-time spinner Robin Uthappa picked one wicket each. Sharath removed Ali Murtaza (1) caught behind by Gautam, who claimed first of the three catches in the day. UP is still 128 runs behind Karnataka’s first innings score of 349 and it is a clear-cut edge for the hosts as they have to get just one wicket at Chinnaswamy Stadium tomorrow. For UP, Parvinder Singh was the lone crusader with the bat as he missed his century by eight runs. He was the last man to be dismissed by part-timer Robin Uthappa. He made 92 runs off 181 balls with 13 boundaries.

Former Mumbai cricketer Vishwanath Bondre dead

IN BRIEF Karnataka Sporting, New Era advance into quarter-finals

MUMBAI: Left arm spinner Chinmay Patil (7/50) helped Karnataka S.A. dismiss Navroze CC for 149 and gain the vital first innings lead to enable his team advance to the quarter-finals of the fourth Santosh Kumar Ghosh Trophy U/16 Cricket tournament. Navroze CC who were sitting pretty at 123/4 at one stage simply caved in after Chinmay with the help of off spinner Varun Joijode dealt quick blows. In another close match in the tournament organized by Sporting Union and Kalyandas Memorial Foundation, New Era CC in a fine rearguard action led by Rehan Khan (51 n.o.) squeaked past Aarey CC's total of 136 with four wickets to spare. Resuming at the overnight score of 17 for 4, New Era were quickly down to 30 for 5 when Rehan and all-rounder Shubham Singh (40) came together to stitch a partnership of 73 runs. Rehan then found an ally in Maxwell Swaminathan (37 n.o.) to see his team through. Durgesh Devrukhkar who had scored a whirlwind 176 yesterday for Sainath turned his left arm over to spin out Sporting Union for a paltry 123 runs. Durgesh grabbed six at a meagre cost of 27 runs. Shreyas Dalvi who was unbeaten on 85 yesterday duly completed his century for Vengsarkar Foundation against United CC.

Vishu Bondre played eight games for Mumbai as a lower order batsman and a medium fast bowler and formed a combination with former India fast bowler Ramakant Desai for his employers ACC, Shivaji Park Gymkhana and Mumbai (then Bombay). With competition so intense for places in the eleven in Mumbai's Ranji Trophy team in the 1960s, Bondre could play in very few games between 1965-66, his first season, and 1969-70. Bondre scored 138 runs with 36 against Baroda at Baroda in his debut season as his best and grabbed 16 wickets at 26.50 per wicket with a personal best of 6 for 116 against Gujarat at Surat in his final Ranji season. In the five years that he played for Mumbai, they were the Ranji Trophy champions, an indication of how strong the team was. In all, Bondre played 28 first class matches and scored 638 runs with 71 as his highest score while he also claimed 40 wickets at just over 30 per victim.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JANUARY 10, 2014

N

EW DELHI: Defending champions Mumbai Indians and the formidable Chennai Super Kings are the two franchises which are set to retain all five players when the teams submit their lists today for the upcoming seventh edition of Indian Premier League. MI and CSK are the two teams that have the biggest fan base all over India and have had a core set of players that has remained pretty much the same over the years. As far as BCCI president N Srinivasan's franchise is concerned, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be retained along with Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Suresh Raina -- all India regulars. The choice of foreign player will be between West Indies' Dwayne Bravo and South Africa's Faf du Plessis. Dhoni's fascination for seambowling all-rounders is widely documented and Bravo certainly will hold an edge over his South African rival, who has also caught the imagination with his big-hitting prowess. For Mumbai Indians, it will be the first season without Sachin Tendulkar and skipper Rohit Sharma and the immensely popular Kieron Pollard are the two automatic choices for retention. Mitchell Johnson's red-hot form and his performance in the Ashes also makes him a contender for a place in the retention list. Sri Lankan slinger Lasith Malinga who has provided brilliant

Johnson rested from opening ODI against England

SYDNEY: Ashes man-of-theseries Mitchell Johnson will be rested from the opening oneday international against England to freshen up for the rest of the series, Australia coach Darren Lehmann said on Thursday. The lethal left-arm paceman was the star of Australia's 5-0 Ashes clean sweep of the tourists with his express bowling, finishing with 37 wickets at 13.97. Johnson will miss Sunday's opening onedayer in Melbourne but will return for the second match at the Gabba on January 17. "It's obviously been a big summer for him so we will just give him a short break," Lehmann told reporters. It's about making sure he is fresh for the other one-dayers as well. It's important that we put out the best side we possibly can but we have to understand it's been a hectic five Test matches and some of the Test boys especially are getting a bit weary," Lehmann added. "Mitch will play in Brisbane definitely. It's one of his home towns. We want them to play in their home state."

Chris Gayle and Tillakratne Dilshan during IPL 6.

service over the years is also in MI's wish-list. Since there is possibility of a part of IPL matches happening in Sri Lanka, Malinga's expertise in those tracks at the Premadasa Stadium or Pallekele or Hambantota grounds will certainly come in handy. Dinesh Karthik's glovework along with his explosive batting makes him a strong candidate for retention while Ambati Rayudu and Harbhajan Singh will also be

in the contention for retention. Harbhajan, with 24 wickets in the last edition and with a better brand value will be slightly ahead in the race than Rayudu. The UB group owned Royal Challengers Bangalore also have an easy choice of retention. It will be their skipper and currently India's best batsman Virat Kohli along with the dynamic Jamaican game-changer Chris Gayle. For Delhi Daredevils, it might be a new beginning having

had horrible last season. Virender Sehwag is unlikely to be retained as he has had a prolonged slump in batting form with falling level of fitness. There is an outside chance of David Warner making the retention list but DD management always has the option of buying Warner back from the auction pool. Kolkata Knight Riders are all set to retain their captain Gautam Gambhir, who led the team to their maiden IPL triumph back in 2012. West Indies spinner Sunil Narine and speedster Mohammed Shami are also in the wish-list of the Shah Rukh Khan coowned franchise. Rajasthan Royals with the retirement of Rahul Dravid will automatically promote Shane Watson as their skipper. Talented keeper batsman Sanju Samson along with Ajinkya Rahane are the couple of Indian players that the Shilpa Shetty co-owned franchise might think of keeping back. Sunrisers Hyderabad, who started off last season with a good show will retain Shikhar Dhawan and Dale Steyn for sure. There is a choice between new ODI sensation Quinton de Kock and West Indies all-rounder Darren Sammy. Kings XI Punjab are also one franchise that will look to build a team afresh after the retirement of Adam Gilchrist. They have the option of either retaining or buying back South African hard-hitter David Miller, who made quite an impression last season.

New-look India aims for credible show By Saumojyoti S Choudhury

N

EW DELHI: A relatively newlook India would be gunning for glory on home turf under new coach Terry Walsh in the inaugural Hero Hockey World League Final where the team will open its campaign against higher-ranked England at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, here today. The tournament will provide India a perfect build up for the World Cup to be held later this year at The Hague, Netherlands. With the world's top seven teams in fray here, India could not have asked for better preparation for the quadrennial event. India should consider itself lucky to be one of the participating teams in the HWL Final. Having failed to qualify directly, India managed a place in the event by the virtue of being the host. India is also slated to host the prestigious Champions Trophy later this year and now it is high time the past masters of the game take advantage of these big-ticket opportunities. The HWL Final will provide the Sardar Singh-led side an opportunity to prove to the world that Indian hockey is on course to regaining its past glory. Apart from the silver medal in the Asia Cup, India didn't have anything

Indian hockey captain Sardar Singh with his teammates duirng a practice session ahead of Hockey World League Final at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.

IMPROVEMENT IS INDIA COACH’S MAIN GOAL

NEW DELHI: Indian coach Terry Walsh sounded realistic about his side's chances, saying he was eyeing nothing but "improvement" from his wards in the tournament. India got a chance to play in the HWL Final by being the hosts and placed along side Germany, England and New Zealand in Pool A while the Pool B consists of Australia, Netherlands, Belgium and Argentina. India will open their campaign against England here today.

major to show in 2013. The Indians finished a disappointing sixth in the HWL semifinals in Rotterdam, but the HWL Final provides the eighttime Olympic champions a perfect stage to prove their detractors wrong. But for that, they will have to overpower formidable opponents such as Germany, Australia and Netherlands. India are placed in Pool A along side reigning Olympic champions and world number one Germany, world No. 4 England and seventh-ranked New Zealand. Pool B consists of Australia, Netherlands, Belgium and Argentina.

Powell says he never knew Simpson used supplement

KINGSTON, JAMAICA: Former 100-metre world record-holder Asafa Powell said that he was unaware his former training partner Sherone Simpson was taking similar supplements to those he used. Powell was called as a witness in Simpson's doping hearing before the Jamaican Anti-Doping Commission disciplinary panel that will begin a hearing into Powell starting next week. Both Simpson and Powell tested positive for the same banned stimulant, oxilofrine (methylsynephrine), at last June's Jamaican national championships. Powell, who blamed his positive test on nutritional supplements, said he only became aware that he and Simpson were both taking similar supplements when both failed drug tests. "I didn't know she was taking it until after the positive test," Powell said.

Vaibhav Suri shocked in Delhi International Chess opener

NEW DELHI: Grandmaster and world under18 bronze medallist Vaibhav Suri suffered a shock defeat at the hands of unheralded N Surendran in the opening round of the premier section of 12th Parsvnath Delhi International Grandmasters Chess Tournament that got underway here. It turned out to be a tough day for Suri who could not match the guile of Surendran in the final stages of the game and fell under time pressure that proved crucial. Surendran used his resources and benefitted from an error by Suri to cause the biggest upset in the first round. Rajib Dhar caused another upset at the expense of Grandmaster S Arun Prasad. Playing white, Dhar was lucky as Arun Prasad blundered his queen from a seemingly drawn endgame. Delhi youngster Aradhya Garg started off on a positive note holding International Master G A Stany to a creditable draw.

32 Negredo fires Man City to brink of final

M

ANCHESTER (UK): Alvaro Negredo plundered a hat-trick as Manchester City destroyed hapless West Ham United 6-0 at the Etihad Stadium to all but qualify for the League Cup final. West Ham had seen a second-string team embarrassed 5-0 at Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on Sunday, but even the return of several first-team players could not prevent a mauling by City’s ruthless forwards in the semi-final first leg. A smartly taken brace from Negredo and a goal from the marauding Yaya Toure put City 3-0 up, with Negredo completing his hat-trick in the second half before Edin Dzeko sealed victory with two goals of his own.

MESSI SCORES TWICE IN LONG-AWAITED RETURN

M

ADRID: Lionel Messi scored twice on his first appearance in 59 days as Barcelona edged towards the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey with a 4-0 win over Getafe in the first leg of their last 16 tie. The four-time World Player of the Year replaced Andres Iniesta after 63 minutes with Barcelona leading 2-0 thanks to a Cesc Fabregas double. Messi put the tie to bed a minute from time when he slotted home a loose ball inside the area. And he added his 16th goal of the season with a stunning run and finish to round off the scoring in stoppage time. With Messi having been out of action since tearing his

hamstring in the 4-1 win over Real Betis in early November he was left on the bench by Barca boss Gerardo Martino. The Argentine coach also had Saturday’s upcoming top of the table clash away to Atletico Madrid in mind as he made had made six changes to the side that started last weekend’s 4-0 win over Elche. However, with Messi and Neymar, ruled out by a stomach bug, again not in the starting line-up, Martino maintained the front three of Alexis Sanchez, Pedro Rodriguez and Fabregas. Martino’s selection proved inspired as Pedro’s lobbed cross was expertly headed into the far corner by Fabregas after just eight minutes.

However, Getafe then managed to stifle Barca from creating too many clear-cut chances before the break and indeed the hosts were grateful to a great save from Jose Manuel Pinto to turn away Juan Rodriguez’s header to go in ahead at half-time. Barca did finally have the breathing space they craved when Juan Valera upended Pedro inside the area and Fabregas blasted the resulting penalty into the top corner. That set the scene for Messi’s arrival and he didn’t disappoint as he calmly slotted home a loose ball inside the area with his trusted leftfoot after Martin Montoya had burst into the Getafe box.

Gay Hitzlsperger hailed for coming out decision B

ERLIN: The football world has been quick to rally round Thomas Hitzlsperger, who has become the first German international to “come out” as a homosexual. Hitzlsperger’s announcement in the magazine Die Zeit has been heralded by players across Europe as an important step forward. And on a day when Paris Saint Germain’s Brazilian star Alex walked into a row over homophobia for comments he made in a TV documentary, the question of homosexuality in sport has suddenly become a major talking point all over the world. Hitzlsperger’s revelations were greeted by fellow-German international Lukas Podolski of Arsenal as “an important sign of our time”. In an interview to be published in Thursday’s edition of Die Zeit, Hitzlsperger, 31, revealed: “I am declaring my homosexuality because I want the question of homosexuality in the world of professional sport to be out in

the open.” But he admitted that reaching the agonising decision to come out had been “a long and difficult process”. Hitzlsperger, capped 52 times by Germany between 2004 and 2010, added: “It is only in recent years I have come to realise I preferred living with a man.” The midfielder, who hung up his boots at the end of last season, plied his trade in Germany, England and Italy with Aston Villa, Everton, Wolfsburg and Lazio among others before retiring last year. Hitzlsperger said he had decided to “come out” because now was “a good time” for him and because he wanted to promote the discussion of homosexuality in professional sport. “I’ve never been ashamed of the way I am,” he added, although it had not always been easy to cope with some of the comments dished out. “In England, Germany or Italy, homosexuality is not taken seriously as an issue, at

least not in the dressing room.” Ace German scorer Lukaz Podolski tweeted: “Brave and rightdecision.Respect,Thoma s Hitzlsperger. His outing is a important sign of our time.” In the world of football, the only previous big name to admit openly to homosexuality was former Norwich and Nottingham Forest striker Justin Fashanu in 1990. He committed suicide eight years later aged 37. There were also messages of support for Hitzlsperger on Twitter from his former club Aston Villa as well as from exEngland captain Gary Lineker. Villa said: “Everyone who knows Thomas from his time here at Villa has great respect for him, not only as the fine player he was but also as a man. His statement today is a straightforward statement and, along with our support as a club, we hope that everyone involved in the game extends to him their support as well.”
