This is a much better option than the pothole-ridden Mumbai-Goa Highway!

L OPINIONS Is the BMC’s plan of providing Wi-Fi for Mumbai a good idea? Farheen Siddiqui News producer Yes. It would prove to be a good idea if the WI-Fi works in the first place. We all know that the BMC has not been able to give us proper roads to travel. Manek Kalyaniwala Lawyer No. BMC should first provide roads free of potholes and supply clean water. Nidhi Upadhyay Journalism student No. It can lead to various cyber crimes. I am not sure if the BMC is ready to tackle them, since the administration can’t even tackle the potholes’ problem. Neha Jayakar Banker Yes. It is a good initiative by the BMC provided it is implemented properly. Zahabiya Takulla Service No. The BMC should first provide primary needs of the citizens, that it safe roads which don’t lead to accidents and timely supply of clean water in all parts of the city. eading by example, Minister for Public Health Suresh Shetty and seven members of his family have pledged to donate their organs. His appeal to fellow legislators to join the cause has had encouraging responses with 253 out of the 366 legislators pledging to donate their organs after death. On a wider scale, the rate of live organs, cadaver and eye donations and transplantations has shown a steady rise since 1995. Shetty’s wife, mother, son, daughter, sister and sister-in-law have all pledged their organs after death. It was during the recentlyconcluded monsoon session of the state legislature in the legislative council that Shetty had made an announcement to this effect and also called upon his colleagues to voluntarily donate their organs after death. According to Health Ministry sources, 165 out of the 288 MLAs have asked for the organ donation form and 48 of the 78 MLCs have done so. This also includes 39 officers of the legislature and government. Since 1995, the rate of live Kidney

transplants (related and unrelated) has touched 6,690, while that of live Liver transplants has been rather low at 48. The rate of Kidney and Liver transplants has picked up from 2007 when 397 cases of Kidney transplants were reported. The

EXCLUSIVE cases of Liver transplants have picked up since 2005 and in May 2012, a maximum number of 21 Liver transplants was recorded. With respect to cadaver organ

transplantation of Lung, Liver, Kidney, Tissue and other organ transplantations, a total number of 470 cases have been recorded so far. Between September and May this year, a total of 103 Brain Stem deaths were declared under the Transplantation of Human Organ Act, 1994, and a total number of cadaver donors were 35 while the total number of organs retrieved were 111, which included 61 Kidneys, 23 Livers and 27 other organs. The countdown begins

Possibly the most pleasurable aspect of the forthcoming Ganesh festival is the waiting and by Friday, we will have entered the final month before Ganesh Chaturthi (September 9). In the city, the women murtikars are out in full force, doing what they have been engaged in for years, making idols, putting in the finishing touches to shape and size, using a delicate touch to paint eyes and cheeks, loving attaching jewellery and ensuring that as always, Ganesha puts his best foot forward. There is also something else that brings our women artists together most of them are engaged in creating eco-friendly Ganeshas. Our photographer Vishwanath travelled from Girgaum to to Dahisar, taking pictures, talking to some of them, and came away with the impression that the future of the artist was in safe hands indeed. Mumbai will have thousands of Ganeshas and every one of them seems to have thousands of devotees. And why not! This is the biggest festival in Mumbai which is practically identified with the elephant god. And never has the city seemed to need him more!

Sunita Deshmukh is another murtikar who has been working as one for seven years in Kurla

Jayashree Gajakosh, also at Kurla, also busy for seven years, is a familiar artiste to her large clientele

Manisha Bhuskute has adjusted perfectly to the fine work of bringing out the tiny details, so beloved to women. Three years in Kurla have not staled the ritual for her.

There is no eclipsing the work done by Dipika Bhopkar in Lalbaug where all Ganeshas are Rajas

Nikita Padwal made an early start and has been a murtikar for 15 Years at Girgaon

Like her mother Jayashree, Sanjana Gajakosh Kin Kurla has come to the art and craft four years ago as if she was to the work born

A

s the city is facing space crunch, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to develop underground markets, along the lines of Connaught Place, the popular underground shopping space in New Delhi. Officials believe this policy will help to make stations and roads in the island city hawkerfree. Illegal hawkers have swamped footpaths, roads, railway stations areas and other open spaces in the city, causing huge inconvenience to commuters. Price per square foot space in Mumbai is the highest in the south Asia, and empty spaces in the city have been already consumed, except for gardens, recreation grounds and playgrounds which are guarded by stringent rules

laid by the courts. Councillor Prakash Gangadhare put forward this proposal in the BMC and it would come up for discussion in the general body meeting of the corporation this month. He said, “Once upon a time, Mumbai was famous as industrial city, however, over a period of time, industry is shifting to other states. To retain past glory, the city needs to be business friendly, and provide space for business. Now space can be made only by developing underground markets under the open

spaces.” The BMC has a few gardens in its possession and most of them are in the island city. These can give space for construction of underground markets. However, the suburbs have hardly few gardens or open spaces. So this policy would not help in the crowded suburbs. Earlier, the BMC had come up with the concept of underground parking in the city and the civic body had published tender notices in newspapers. Contracts were given to the close relative of a former Lok Sabha speaker.

‘Minor mineral’

Sand is considered a ‘minor mineral’ under the Indian law, unlike coal, diamonds or gold which are classed as major minerals. The extraction of minor minerals is governed by the state rather than federal laws. According to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, which was amended in May 2012, those who want to mine sand must obtain a license from state authorities and pay a royalty on the amount they extract. These fees generally amount to about eight per cent of the sale price.

accused in the racketPappu, Ganesh, Hanif and Chacha -were questioned during the investigation, but there has not been a follow up on this by the officials. Sand stealing thus continues to persist. Says Pawan Chandak, Tehshildar, Panvel, “The investigation process will start within a few days.” Incidentally, around 25-30 labourers are involved with each contractor in the dredging along the creek, using heavy machines and boats near Ulva village and all these boats carry explosives. The explosives are used when the sand is hard and it is difficult to dredge it with the machine. An explosion is then done in the water and the sand is pulled out. As per the law, using heavy machines to extract natural resources is illegal. According to Chandak, “Migrant labourers who lack awareness about the legal framework are hired for this work and the main accused hardly comes into picture.”

Reduced protection from beachfront erosion Mining and dredging activities, poorly-planned stockpiling and uncontrolled dumping and chemical/fuel spills cause reduced water quality for downstream users, increased cost for downstream water treatment plants and poisoning of aquatic life.

ith the forms for the Elementary/Intermediate drawing examinations being dispatched, city schools have set some compulsions on students who want to appear for these drawing exams. Schools have asked such students to join the school’s drawing classes costing around Rs.2,000. The pupils who deny doing so will not be allowed to appear for the examinations. The Directorate of Maharashtra State Department of Arts has given out forms to schools for registering their students in the Elementary and Intermediate state level drawing examinations. Although the fee for the Elementary examination is Rs.50 and that of Intermediate is Rs.100, schools have begun looting money from their students. The Elementary and Intermediate Grade Examination is held every year during September in Maharashtra. Only those candidates who pass the Intermediate Drawing and Elementary Grade Exam-

ination are admitted to the specialised higher courses like Commercial Art, Fine Art, and Foundation. But it is not compulsory for other art courses like Fashion Design, Interior Design, and Textile etc. Even some IT and vocational engineering courses give substantial significance to the intermediate exam. These exams comprise subjects like nature drawing, still life, memory drawing, design, free hand drawing and geometry. Around four lakh students across the state appear for these exams every year. A student from a Jogeshwari school, who did not wished to be named, said, “My school has made the drawing classes compulsory for students who want to appear for the Elementary and Intermediate examinations. We are asked to pay a higher amount for the classes whereas the examination fees are quite minimal. I was not allowed to appear for the exams since I did not join the drawing classes.” Another student said, “I was not issued the intermediate form as I did not join the classes. I have already missed the reg-

istrations and have lost my chance to appear for the intermediate exam”. Students also claim that schools have not been providing proper receipts for the payment of these extra fees for the drawing classes. According to the rules of the Directorate of Maharashtra State Department of Arts, the fees for students outside Maharashtra are Rs.100 and Rs.200 for the Elementary and Intermediate examinations respectively. This year, the Elementary examination will be held on September 25 and 26 and the Intermediate examination will be held on September 27 and 20. When the ADC spoke to G.B. Dhanokar, Director Maharashtra State Department of Arts, he said, “Till now, no complaints have been received by the department. If such things are happening, students and parents should step ahead and complain about the same. The department will take strict action against schools manipulating the rules. It is a punishable offence and any school laying such rules will be punished.” yatin.ingle@afternoondc.in

next March. This is a clear signal that there are no plans to pre-pone the elections despite mounting pressure from corporates who want political and policy clarity so that they can unfreeze their business plans and start investing again. Interestingly, the monsoon session of Parliament will probably be the last full session of the 15th Lok Sabha, as both Mayawati and Mulayam Singh have repeatedly warned. If the Congress grapevine is to be believed, there is a limited agenda for the session: to get its election showpiece, the food security bill, passed. The party couldn’t care less if no other

Instead, again according to the Congress grapevine, the government will probably call a brief session sometime in February/March next year, go in for a voteon-account and dissolve the Lok Sabha after that. The 2014-2015 budget will be left to the new government. It looks like the Congress wants to wash its hands off the economic slowdown and put the burden of tackling the fallout on the shoulders of its successors.

chief B.S. Yeddyurappa and JVM boss Babu Lal Marandi. Both have kept the BJP out of power in Karnataka and Jharkhand respectively by snatching away a large chunk of its voter base. While Yeddyurappa seems keen on a homecoming, Marandi apparently is still mulling over Modi’s offer. He has the option of tying up with another regional outfit, the All Jharkhand Student’s Association. The two together could pose a challenge to the Congress-JMM alliance but a mahajot with the BJP would be formidable. The question is how far is Modi ready to go to accommodate the ambitions of regional leaders who, like himself, refuse to bow to the diktats of the high comand? Marandi is expected to meet Modi soon to find out for himself.

paths have disappeared. This is the moment when Tao arises. That's why I say 'the pathless path'. Tao is the pathless path. This is the moment when all paths disappear; you look back and there is nothing. Start listening to sounds, let music be your meditation. Listen to the sounds, all kinds of sounds. They are all divine – even

MATTER & SPIRIT the market noise, even the sounds that are created in the traffic. This airplane, that train, all sounds have to be listened to so attentively and silently and lovingly... as if you are listening to music. And you will be surprised: you can transform all sounds into music; they are music. All that is needed is our attitude: if we are resistant, the sound becomes noise; if we are receptive, loving, the sound becomes music. The same thing can be noise to somebody and to somebody else, music. If you have not heard Indian classical music it will be just noise. If you love it and you have sympathy for it, it is just out of this world, it is of the beyond. People

JOURNALISTS who cover the ministry of external affairs were surprised at the way they were shooed away and deprived of tea after a function at the MEA’s new home, Jawaharlal Nehru Bhavan. It was a high profile function, to present a “green building” certification to the ministry for its environment-friendly construction. Since the function was outgoing foreign secretary Ranjan Mathai’s last official do before handing over charge the next day, MEA’s entire top brass was present, including the incoming boss, Sujatha Singh. Journalists were invited for the function but as soon as it ended, they were unceremoniously packed off and denied entry to the tea hall. It would have been a great opportunity for an informal interaction. But clearly, the MEA didn’t want journalists nosing around.

Unusual guests for Kerala boat fest THE annual Kerala boat race festival will host two unusual guests this year: vice president Hamid Ansari and minister of state for sports Jitendra Singh. Interestingly, although Singh is going in his capacity as sports minister, it’s the defence ministry that’s getting the jitters. Singh wears a second hat as minister of state for defence. Kerala has been hit by floods this year and defence rescue teams are apparently working round the clock to complete relief and rehabilitation work before the boss arrives. in the East who are not acquainted with the Western music think this is just crazy noise. Whenever you don't fall in tune with something it becomes noise; when you fall in tune with it, when you start vibrating with it, when there is a harmony between you and it, it becomes music. And great is the joy when you can convert all sounds into music. Then your whole life starts becoming a rhythm. And listening to sounds will be very helpful. Not to any sound in particular, because that becomes a concentration. Mm? this noise of the train... the traffic, some dog starts barking... an airplane passes by; all have to be accepted. Not that you have to concentrate on any sound – listen to all sounds from everywhere. You have just to be alert, listening, with no choice. That will help you immensely and that will become your meditation. Listening to the ocean, or listening to the thundering of the clouds, or listening to the rain falling heavily, just put your ego aside, because there is no need... The ocean is not going to attack you, the rain is not going to attack you, the trees are not going to attack you – there is no need of any defense. To be vulnerable to life as such, to existence as such, you will be getting these moments continuously. Soon it will become your very life. — Osho

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2013

Manmohan is responsible for his inaction WHEN the cat is weak, even the mouse plays nasty with it (cat). That is what is happening with Manmohan Singh. Mulayam Singh’s nephew, Ram Gopal Yadav, stated that the Centre can withdraw all the IAS cadre officers from Uttar Pradesh. What a farce! The press and the electronic media have dutifully conveyed the same to people as though it was a breaking news. When Ram Gopal Yadav announced this, what he might have meant is they have got enough goondas and they will take care of the Jungle Raj. Why should they bother? The way Azam Khan, shamelessly , said ‘Ram naam ka loot, ho sake to loot lo’. What a shame! This is the quality of ministers we have today. What better can be expected from such thugs? Durga Shakti, being young and enthusiastic, might have thought of doing her duty religiously. That poor girl might not be knowing that it is UP and being run by Raja Bhaiyyas, Mulayams, Mayavatis and Azam Khans. Akhilesh is a classic example to show that an education will not change the culture of a man. This chip of the old block, despite being literate (need not be educated), remains the same Yadav like his father and uncles. Being a young man, it was his duty to protect and defend Durga Shakti to the hilt. But, being as shameless as shame itself, he defended her suspension. It is unpardonable. But, alas! It is Uttar Pradesh. How long can it go like this. Manmohan, as somebody joked, can become a matter for Omprakash Mehra’s next film ‘Bol Manmohan Bol’ (sequel of ‘Bhaag Milka Bhaag’). It is wrong to blame Sonia for his failure. It may be recalled that it was she who forced him (Manmohan) to remove

BEEFING UP SECURITY: The decision of the state cabinet to increase the sanctioned strength of the State police force by 60,000 is laudable. THIS is with reference to the report ‘60,000 more cops!’ (ADC, Aug 6). The decision of the state cabinet to increase the sanctioned strength of the State police force by 60,000 is laudable considering that all types of crimes against women from chain snatching to acid attacks have been on the increase in the city. Along with this, the living conditions of the policemen also need to be improved since the facilities available at the police lines leave a lot to be desired and recently the wives of the cops took out a morcha to draw attention to these. The work schedule of the cops too needs to be looked into realistically. From the number of suicides among policemen, it is clear that quite a few of

Ashvin Kumar and Pavan Bansal. It was she who wrote to him to take remedial action to protect the young lady in UP. There are innumerable instances to show that Manmohan himself is responsible for his inaction. At least now, better late than never, he should show his prowess and do some thing for the good for the country. Otherwise people will live in hope and die in despair. God save the country! — M.H. Nayak, Mumbai

IT was very informative to read the editorial dated August 5, ‘A coverup operation by Akhilesh fails’ and learn about the real reason behind the suspension of IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal. It is sad that an honest officer is being targeted in a most shameful and cowardly manner on a charge which is false and concocted and far away from the reality. More saddening is the fact that the Hon’ble Chief Minister appears to have been influenced by members of the powerful sand mining lobby and instead of supporting and standing by the brave lady chose to sheepishly buckle to the pressure. In spite of the Chairperson of UPA Madam Sonia Gandhi writing to Hon’ble Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in this regard, Durga Nagpal’s suspension continues and this sets a bad signal to all the honest officials in India, be it in the Executive, Legislature or Judiciary—three organs of Government—as envisaged under the Constitution of India that their political masters succumb to the pressures of powerful lobbyists and leave them high and dry to face the music for their honest act. One should remember Mahatma Gandhi his teachings and ideals and tread the path to protest them are working under tremendous stress. It was also good to read the statement of the DGP Sanjeev Dayal that increasing the number of convictions is his top priority. For this, more forensic laboratories and cyber cells will indeed be required. Forensic science and criminology are not taught in all the universities and therefore more colleges have to be encouraged to introduce this important course. One hopes that the government will implement this decision expeditiously and extend the benefits to the citizens of Mumbai.

Where did the notes come from? WE have heard of notes and even entire files disappear from government offices whenever a scam surfaces, but now we have a strange story of additional notes. Not just bits of paper but of value—up to Rs.1,000. It appears that the RBI has been receiving notes in excess of what is printed! Where did the additional notes come from? IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal’s ouster for doing her duty does not come as a surprise as political power wigs across the country and party line use such tactics to suppress the honest. There is ‘andha kanoon’ not just in UP but across other states of our country including Gujarat and Maharashtra where politicians are facing similar charges but the issue gets dragged in courts for decades. The first day of monsoon session in Parliament was a mockery as parliamentarians played spoilt sport and disrupted both Huses before a ‘ball could even be bowled’. It was nice to see Sachin Tendulkar attend the session but his track record in the ‘House’ is dismal as he has only one attendance marked in his name and that too in the monsoon session of 2012. Tendulkar is a gentleman to the core, well behaved at all times & perhaps does not attend Parliament because it hardly functions and disrupted for silly reasons.Tendulkar must attend Parliament more often so that other Parliamentarians take a leaf out of his book and emulate him as far as discipline goes. Parliament should have an umpire or referee as they have on a sports field to regulate things and even punish or suspend the guilty so that we have more working sessions at an institution which actually governs our country. — S.N.Kabra, Goregaon

<<Panelists discussing their secrets to success

Listen up, MBA Students! Continued from pg 13 « Arun Nanda explained this point well by saying, “It does not matter what you like. What matters is what your customer wants. Why is it our most prominent five star chains did not not succeed in the market? Because the owner could only think of Italian Marble, teak and brass and not anything else, and therefore could not lure in customers who wanted a room for just 1500 rupees. First learn to be a team player and learn to be humble. Nothing works better than humility.” When working in this field it is advisable to brush that chip of your shoulder and realize that your profession is always about what the customer wants and needs and not vice versa. No end to learning The panelists gave a great emphasis to this point and continuously reminded the students to never stop learning. They noted that even though a person reaches a certain part in their career where they can say they’re quite successful, it is still not the end of the road when it comes to learning. “I often look towards my subordinates to learn knew things. Things that I thought I had covered but was clearly mistaken. Your whole professional life is just another learning process. To

tell yourself that you know everything is probably the biggest mistake you can make,” said Nanda.

Want to pursue a Masters in Design in Italy

I am preparing a list of universities to apply to in the US after 12th. Besides rankings, what should I consider? —Rakesh There are several factors to consider, which you should weigh based on your own unique priorities. The location of colleges will determine the weather, but may also improve your employability if you are in a hub for your industry (e.g. Texas is where most of the Oil and Gas companies are headquartered). The size of the colleges is another thing to look at: larger colleges tend to have larger class sizes, which can mean less interaction with professors. However, large colleges have the advantage of having a more diverse and international student body. If you have a strong passion for something, take into account which universities have student clubs where you can build upon that interest. I would like to pursue my Masters in Design from Italy. I would like to know the institutes that I could apply to and the duration of the available courses. —Dhwani The Florence Institute of Design International, Florence Design Academy, Academia Italiana, Scuola Politecnica di Design, Domus Academy Milan and the University of Portsmouth are some of the reputed universities in Italy offering Masters in Interior Design. It could range from 11-15 months. The University of Portsmouth also offers a part time course which is of 2 year duration in case you wish to opt for part time courses. The above universities usually have a September or January intake. The entry requirement for the above universities is an eligible Bachelor degree and the IELTS score. The entry requirements for the different universities would be different for the different universities. The information on entry requirements would be available on the respective university websites. I want to pursue my undergraduate degree in Psychology in the UK. Which

universities am I eligible to apply to with a predicted ISC score of 85%? —Megan You are eligible to apply to Universities like Cardiff, York University, Bristol University, Durham University, Sheffield University and Nottingham University to name a few. Apart from the academic eligibility requirement for the ISC score, these universities also evaluate the grade tenth score. They would normally accept a score of more than 80% in grade tenth. You are also required to apply for IELTS/TOEFL prior to submitting

the application. You would have to meet the respective universities score requirement in the test. For instance Sheffield University requires an IELTS score of 7 with no less than 6.5 in any of their components while Durham University accepts a score of 6.5 with no less than 6 in any of the elements.

Current LCDs typically are limited to displaying 35 percent or less of the visible color spectrum. This means the viewing experience on an LCD can be vastly different than what a person sees in the real world. 3M is all set to change this with its new 3M QDEF solution that will allow up to 50 per cent more color than current levels in LCD devices. QDEF utilizes the light emitting properties of quantum dots to create an ideal backlight for LCDs, which is one of the most critical factors in the color and efficiency performance of LCDs. A quantum dot, which is 10,000 times narrower than a human hair, can be tuned to emit light at very precise wavelengths. This means display makers can create a highlyoptimized backlight that only produces the exact wavelengths of red, green and blue light needed by an LCD for optimal color and energy performance.

says Yogesh Shah, Co-founder - The Backpacker Co and The Villa Escape

I

did my BCom from HR College. Travel has always been a passion for me. I have been backpacking and traveling across India and the globe ever since I can remember. Initially my wife and I started helping our friends with their planning and travelling and we soon realized we were doing fine. So we decided to take it up professionally. I have traveled through various countries and continents, stayed in different kinds of places, sampled a variety of local cuisines and met people from various corners of the world. That is when I honed my skills as a globe trekker. I now want others to share my dream of making travel exciting. I want to add ‘experience’ into travel and not just do the run-off-the-mill stuff, be it any destination across the world. As the company’s vision says, I want to take like-minded people ‘off the beaten path’. Being in the travel industry gave me the freedom to combine my passion with my profession. So while I <<Yogesh Shah am working, I am also enjoying myself. It also gives me an opportunity to explore newer destinations, exciting places to see and interesting activities to do to keep our trips fresh and engaging. And of course, I get a chance to meet like-minded individuals from all walks of life from whom I am constantly learning something new. My commerce background has helped me tremendously as far as setting up the travel business is concerned. This includes getting the books sorted and ensuring that the balance sheets always show a heavier credit side. My commerce degree helped me create business plans, fixing targets, and managing the team effectively. I did not have any formal training in travel. Whatever I know, I do because of all the backpacking I have done on my own in my youth. My biggest asset is my hands-on experience in travel. I am constantly multi-tasking and mentoring my team of young peo-

ple so that they can assume more responsibilities and rise to more senior levels. Initially, the biggest investment I have had to make was time – for travelling the world over to gather the much-needed experience that would one day serve as the foundation of The Backpacker Co. Later, there were more tangible investments such as buying a PC. As we grew, we rented out an office, hired more people which required an initial investment of Rs. 2,00,000 plus. Another investment we had to make was in creating our website and establishing our presence on social

he students of KC College, Churchgate, are organising their annual cultural festival, Kiran, on September 24 and 25 at KC College. The theme for this year’s Kiran is ‘Dynamic Duos’, a celebration of the all-time iconic pairs in fiction and in the actual public sphere. In its 16th year, with more than 60 colleges of the city participating, Kiran 2013 promises to provide a high dose of fun and excitement. This year’s theme focuses on highlighting the strong bond of a compatible and understanding team such as Akbar-Birbal, Romeo-Juliet, Sherlock Holmes-Dr. Watson and the likes, which made these duos famous throughout history. In a bid to make a difference to the

society and to channelize the positive energy of the students for a cause, Kiran 2013 has decided to support the victims of the recent Uttarakhand tragedy by organizing various events and charity drives. “We wish to use this opportunity to express solidarity with the victims of Uttarakhand floods as we believe that a college festival can mean more than just fun and frolic,” says Karan Sawlani, Chairperson, Kiran 2013. “With Kiran, we wish to provide a platform to all the students across the city to showcase and hone their talents. Our students have worked very hard to ensure that everyone enjoys to the fullest at the festival,” says Manju Nichani, Principal, KC College.

media. At India’s first ever conference on travel technologies in Kerala’s capital Thiruvananthapuram this year, tourism professionals and marketers inform that the industry needs to make the best of the tremendous potential in internet and mobile connectivity. The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International, inform that digital commerce in India is expected to reach Rs.62,967 crore in 2013, about 33 per cent more than last year. About 73 per cent share of this market is absorbed by online travel transactions, which is about Rs.

34,544 crore; and is expected to grow by 30 per cent to Rs 44,907 crore by the end of this year. This means that the digital medium can be profitable for tourism businesses and it is important to tap this segment which has tremendous potential. According to industry professionals social media is a potential platform that the travel and tourism industry must make the best of to grow. Social media is much more than simply a space for personal networking. It is a very powerful marketing tool. The travel industry is constantly evolving, so one never really stops to learn. But to be able to function at a professional level, it can take anything from 3-5 years of training along with hands-on experience. Freshers can earn anything between Rs.10-12K, depending on their capability. Since this is a start-up, it is difficult to pay industry-level salaries. What is important though is that individuals have the passion and the commitment to persevere. They need to know where they want to reach and see themselves in the next 5-10 years. Professionals in the industry can get the opportunity to travel, explore new places, and meet like-minded people. These two things always help in opening up the mind and giving us a new perspective on things. Since the travel industry is constantly evolving, there are many aspects and nuances that a professional in this industry needs to learn and often relearn. Also, the industry is one of the first few to be affected from an economical slowdown. So we always have to be prepared, and in fact predict any sudden setback that the industry might experience. My one and only advice to youngsters who want to take up a profession in travel and build a career here is to have passion. This is a fun profession to have but it requires a 24x7 focus. Clients demand a hands-on service and there is no switch-off. So if clients call you even at 3am in the morning, you need to answer. You have to know the places that you are selling to your clients; therefore it is important to visit and experience first-hand these places yourself to better interpret and share information about these places with your clients or customers. One must also read up about the various places you are trying to sell and get as much information as possible. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

375 SEATS TO INCREASE AT RUSSIAN UNIVERSITIES

Pic for representational purposes only

« ALERTS

Russian State universities have announced an increase in the number of seats for international students this year. The Russian Universities have informed Edurussia, the universities’ official admission processing office for students from India, that it can enroll an additional 375 students from India this year. Enrolling through Edurussia has many advantages in terms of recognition status of degrees as students documents are authenticated with special attestations as per the requirement for registering the degrees in European countries. Students enrolling for these premium universities have a special advantage as they receive an European Appendix with their degree which enables the graduates from these Universities to avail scholarships in most European nations for post graduation or apply for jobs directly in the European nations as the degrees awarded are equated and recognized without any licensing exam with mapping of curriculum in therapy as well as clinical transcripts. More and more students are opting for these universities as in addition to all the advantages, many concerned students are wisely giving due importance to the bilateral relations between their home country and the country of study. For more information and to apply for admission, contact Edurussia – The Admission Department (India) for Russian State and Government Universities on 022 65295354, 65174444, 9920868727, 9769559855. Attrition: A disturbing trend Retaining employees is becoming difficult in India. Robin Ramakrishna, Director and Co-founder, Annectos writes on why India is about to witness new and more structured rewards and recognition policies.

A

n industry survey conducted recently has found that one in four employees in India are likely to switch jobs this year, making it a country with the highest rate of attrition in the world. For a booming market looking to increase productivity and quality, this comes as a rattling piece of news and might have forced employers across the board to analyze the reasons for this disturbing trend. The survey conducted by global human resource and management consultancy major Hay Group in association with the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr), found that India is expected to lead the region in turnover rates at 26.9 per cent (in the organised sector) in 2013 — the highest attrition rate globally; this figure is expected to go up further in 2014 to stand at 27.5 per cent. It is a no-brainer that in order to retain employees, organizations must give a serious thought to what is driving employee disenchantment and what would drive employee commitment. Over the last decade Indian industries have seen explosive growth. With this growth some new challenges in maintaining and handling talent have risen. Today’s managers are dealing with a dynamic and ambitious new generation. The gap between older established workforce and the ambitious upcoming youth is widening. Companies not only have to attract talent but have to manage to motivate and retain them as well. Management and corporate structures have been grappling with keeping up with this fast paced change. There is set to be a renewed focus on human resources and

Keeping employees happy is crucial. The next decade of economic growth in India is certain to see the rise of a new more structured rewards and recognition policy. the R &R management. As organizations in India realize that it’s critical to focus on developing, engaging and retaining employees, the earlier knee jerk reactions are giving way to a more strategic and sustainable approach to Reward & Recognition (R & R). The best of companies today are breaking free from India’s employment & rewards legacy. They recognise that India is a unique market with specific requirements. Just pushing up salaries is no longer a sustainable long term action. The need of the hour is a more strategic, creative solution-ing. The R & R process can actually be a key differentiator for a company. A creative, well planned sophisticated R & R program can ensure that the employees are offered a choice from a menu of rewards to attract and sustain interest. And these awards are recognised on a social platform that brings in transparency & confidence in the whole system. The R & R market in India is still in its nascent stage but on a growth path, with more companies fast realising the need to implement a structured R & R program for their workforce. Specialists and complete solution providers are a few and far between currently, but this is expected to rapidly change with more global & Indian players establishing themselves here. The open economy and technological revolution has encouraged the creation of more dynamic organisations with new management styles and with a new type of employees – younger, highly qualified and ambitious. This sometimes sits a little uneasily with the traditional businesses and career structures. This phenomenon is further complicated by the fact that India is inherently a hierarchical society. We have observed that there is a clear distinction between how R & R is handled in the new economy visa-vis the old economy companies. Companies in the new emerging sectors like IT/ITES/Retail have been early adaptors to a more structured approach to R & R. While the companies in the more traditional sectors like manufacturing,, public sector etc are yet to adapt themselves to a work flow driven structured process. The good news all across – the new and the old economy companies, is that the need for a good R & R process is no longer debated. What is being debated and discussed more today are questions related to ‘how’ and ‘when’.

« MENTOR’S DESK

WHAT IS R&R?

Employee reward systems refer to programs set up by companies to reward performance and motivate employees. They are normally considered separate from salary but may be monetary in nature or otherwise have a cost to the company. The culture of gifting and recognition is not new to the Indian culture. It’s an age old concept followed by the Indian industry as well – offering gifts to employees on select occasions like Diwali, Holi or New Year. But how many companies in India understand the long term utility of sufficiently recognising and rewarding their talent pool, and taking this concept beyond the idea of gifts and annual salary hikes? The employee recognition programs are often combined with reward programs and are intended to provide a financial, motivational and hence a psychological benefit. Even smaller businesses are recognizing its importance now.

A Cascading Success

T

A memory boost By A Staff Reporter

D

P Mahesha, Founder and director of Masterminds International, an organization that deals in mind management techniques, is usually a busy man, hopping from city to city and holding his workshops, where, for participants ranging from children to adults, he teaches how memory power can actually be boosted. Unfailingly, he is a hit with audiences, some of his feats taking on the aura of a trick. Yet, he says, we all have the capacity to remember much more than we think we do. “People think I was born with gifts of memory and concentration. I learnt them the hard way and so many others can too. You need to strive to reach maximum potential. What never fails to astonish me is that we are born with this amazing gift which God has given to each one of us called the brain. But we hardly ever realize the full capacity of this tool. We only use a tiny fraction of its capabilities in our lifetime,” he says. A pioneer in the field of creative memory and mind management, he is living proof of the effectiveness of his techniques; having been a rank holder and gold medal winner for several outstanding academic achievements. He is the proud recipient of Memory Wizard Award in the Memory Asiad competition, 2001 and can recall numbers, words, abstract image, binary codes, and has always been wowing people with his skills of recollection. He uses a number of techniques that can help to increase concentration. Ambidexterity is one such tool; it balances both sides or hemi-

<< D. P. Mahesha spheres of the brain. “We usually talk about two different brains as opposed to two hemispheres - the earlier concept of one brain and two hemispheres has now changed, rather like two kidneys in the human system. The left side of our brain deals with logistical thinking. The right side is more creative, musical and artistic. The idea is that once

you start balancing these two, you will be able to improve your concentration,” he says. They are all basic techniques that anybody can master: speed-reading for instance. “You can increase your speed from between 300 to 1,500 words a minute. It’s rather like learning to ride a bicycle; you never forget. What you’re doing is increasing your consciousness to a higher state.” And anyone can learn ambidexterity. “I did a programme in Italy some time back about how we could teach a student to balance both his hemispheres through simple techniques like ambidexterity and mind mapping - a technique where you use images, colours and symbols. It’s a technique that was used by Leonardo Da Vinci and it’s very powerful. It’s a prescribed technique in many European universities.” “If you have good concentration, your productivity increases. It has been scientifically proven that your memory will also improve because memory and concentration go hand in hand. Whenever a student asks me how to increase his or her memory I tell them that their problem is not memory, but concentration. If they increase their concentration, their memory will follow,” he concludes.

Get Paid to Party

Swetha Jairam, a Zumba Fitness Instructor and ZIN Member (certified in Zumba Basic I, Zumba Basic II, and Aqua Zumba) and Weight Loss Counsellor tells Naressa Coutinho how being a zumba instructor has come as a blessing in disguise to her. Zumba is becoming a cool new form of workout in India but how effective is it? Zumba Fitness is a Latin-Inspired, easyto-follow, calorie-burning, dance fitness party and it works for weight loss, weight management, fat loss and body toning. It takes the basic steps from Latin dance styles like the Meringue, Cumbia, Salsa, Latin-pop, Reggaetton, Bachhata, Calypso, Samba etc and merges a fitness formula to it. In Zumba you work out from head to toe using muscles you would otherwise never have used in a normal gym class. Its tagline ‘Party Yourself into Shape’ explains the reason for its popularity. It’s Dance; it’s Fitness; it’s Fun. You come out of a Zumba Fitness class with a lot more energy; with a bag full of stress out of your system and most importantly with a smile. Zumba uses all the basic fitness formulas. It works on the concept of intermittent training, i.e. a fast paced track that sends your heart rate racing which increases your stamina, followed by a slow paced song breaking you into a sweat, toning your muscles and burning more fat than ever. With Zumba one can lose weight and tone up rather quickly and reach a fitnesshigh and that too in a fun way. No. I admire Shahrukh. However it’s too late to try doing gimmicks. A sensational pairing would be that of SRK and Kajol or Salman and Madhuri. Honestly, I’m not a big fan of Rohit Shetty films but whatever I know of them they are full of elaborate stunts which somehow resemble Rajnikanth movies. Deepika has put in a lot of effort. However, I do not feel that this movie will do well at the box-office. Karina Pandya Content Writer

egends of men and women with extraordinary powers have been going on since centuries. Ram in the Ramayana and Arjun in the Mahabharata are just a few examples. The ‘official’ start of superheroes was when one primary school teacher, in order to explain to her students the value of good, came up with the story of a man who acquired super natural powers and used them to defeat terrible monsters. You kind of get the idea. The first superhero however, to get worldwide recognition and really launch the superhero era so to speak was when the Superman comic was released by DC comics in 1932. The idea of a man being able to fly and not be harmed by bullets really clicked with the crowd. Comics were originally meant to provide reading material to kids with the help of pictures so that the child would have a perfect idea of what the author was trying to portray. However, these comic books became extremely popular even with the youth and the working men and women because of the simple fact that they provided a light and entertaining read. These superheroes became the perfect role models who everyone wanted to be like. They resembled the perfect man or as near to it as one’s imagination would allow. Today, the superhero industry is one of the largest in the entertainment field with at least five to six superhero movies releasing every year. The convention on the discussion of comic books, popularly known as Comic con is held in most of the major cities throughout the world where all the superhero enthusiasts come and discuss their favorite super-

heroes and enact themes and scenes from their favorite movies. X-men, Batman, Thor, Captain America, Green Lantern and Superman are just few of the popular superheroes, all of whom have certain powers, which they were either born with or gained through some freak situation or accident. A very hot topic of debate amongst comic lovers and superhero enthusiasts is who is the best superhero? The current most popular superhero as such is Iron Man, who has over 10 million likes on Facebook and a huge following on Twitter. However, this balance of power keeps on changing as and when the superhero’s new movies and comics are released. A hero in our minds is a person who has done a great thing or has accomplished a lot in his life. A superhero is a hero exponentially multiplied to get something like Superman and Batman. Many superheroes start out their lives as ordinary men leading ordinary lives who hope to do something very different in our lives, which are then dramatically changed by some accident or circumstances, or most of the times they are simply chosen by an elite power to carry out some necessary duties for which they are given special powers. Apart from the superheroes themselves, the villains whom they face-off against also gain some popularity due to some killer dialogues and a budding trend of supporting the underdog in most cases. Also, it has now been accepted that a superhero requires a super villain. Without a nemesis, these superheroes do not have an identity. The faceoff between Batman and Joker for example is one of the most popular fights in the history of the entertainment industry. The idea of who exactly qualifies to be a superhero has also changed a lot since

the advent of Superman in the 1930s. Earlier a superhero fought the bad guy, saved his girl and won the support of the people. Now, however Hulk, who is a humongous angry monster that evolves from a man when he is very angry also qualifies as a superhero. Iron Man technically is a guy with an awesome suit. It is the suit that does all the work but yet he is considered as a prime example of a superhero, although he possesses several wrong habits. The concept of superheroes has been around for quite a while and will still be around. They provide us with inspiration, awe and sometimes jut some plain old much needed entertainment. Superheroes are a product of our imagination brought to life through comic books and movies. They are people who we want to be but we know that we will never be able to be. After all they are not called superheroes for nothing?

CNG prices to jump by `11.7

EW DELHI: The government decision to double natural gas prices from April next year will translate into a hike of Rs.8.20-Rs 11.72 per kg in CNG rates in cities like Delhi and Mumbai. The government had in late June decided to price all domestically produced natural gas at an average of global hub rates and cost of imported LNG. Accordingly, gas price is expected to be in the range of US $8.2 to $8.4 per million British thermal unit in April as against current $4.2, reports PTI. "If it is presumed that the city gas distribution entity is operating entirely on domestic gas, the impact of USD 1 per mmBtu increase in price of domestic gas would result in a price hike of Rs 2.93 per kg of CNG," Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Panabaaka Lakshmi said. While CNG supplier in national capital Indraprastha Gas sources 70 per cent of its needs from domestic fields, Mahanagar Gas Ltd buys almost all of its gas from domestic producers. Also, CNG retailers in Gurgaon and Faridabad source almost all of their gas needs from domestic fields.

ing", Defence spokesman, Jammu, S N Acharya told PTI. "In the ensuing firefight, five Indian soldiers were martyred. The ambush was carried out by approximately 20 heavily armed terrorists along with soldiers of Pak Army," he said, adding one soldier was injured. In Delhi, Pakistan Deputy High Commissioner Mansoor Ahmed Khan was summoned to South and a strong protest ws lodged over the killing of Indian soldiers. The issue rocked both Houses of Parliament with members demanding a quick and firm response from the government.

Markets Crash

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Wednesday (August 7, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell substantially on Tuesday (August 06, 2013) a net 143.15 points (2.52%) and closed at the 5542 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 5664 points level and that level itself was the high of the session. It then declined and turned into a range bound movement until 2.15 p.m. The index then declined sharply and registered the day’s low at the 5521 points level at 2.47 p.m. It then rose marginally and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained below its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 143 points and closed below the psychologically important 5600 points level. Sentiment was extremely bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 46 were losers, while just 4 stocks managed to close in the green. All the sectoral indices closed in the red. Substantial selling was witnessed in consumer durables, realty, banking and metal stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 11.24%. This change is moderate and indicates a wide participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 305 were gainers, 1068 were losers and 318 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined in the over-sold zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI fell and crossed below the 30 level and is now declining (negative if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero and is declining (negative if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is below the –DI line and both lines are diverging (negative if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is falling, which indicates that the present down trend is increasing in strength.

support at the 5636 and 5578 points level were crossed below yesterday. Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 5951 points level. The next resistance is at the 6108 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 5576 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 5488. Support (2) = 5433. Resistance (1) = 5631. Resistance (2) = 5719.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a long black body candle on higher volumes. In fact yesterday’s candle is almost like a Black Marubozu candle. (A Black Marubozu forms when the open equals the high and the close equals the low). This is negative and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the sell side of the market. Further, the index has crossed below two major support levels at the 5636 and 5578 points level. Moreover, the 15 day’s moving average has crossed below the 25 day’s moving average. The index continues to remain below the 5, 15, 25 and 200 day’s moving averages and all the four averages are declining. The velocity parameters too are negatively trended. All these indicate a negative bias and the possibility of a further decline unfolding. Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS) The index: Is below its 5-day average (at 5675) Negative. Is below its 15-day average (at 5859) Negative. Is below its 25-day average (at 5871) Negative. Is below its 200-day average (at 5853) Negative.

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a weak market with a negative bias.

Orbit Corporation has been issued a notice of default and loan recovery of Rs.96 crore by LIC Housing Finance Corp. Ltd after the Mumbai-based developer couldn’t pay up the amount even after an extension of six months that ended in March. The company took a loan of Rs.250 crore from LIC, of which it has repaid about Rs.150 crore but didn’t pay up the rest as projects have been held up because of delays in obtaining regulatory permissions, impacting cashflows, Orbit managing director Pujit Aggarwal said yesterday. The default has led to the loan being declared a non-performing asset. Sales in three of Orbit’s projects in Mumbai—in Kalina, Lower Parel and Andheri, against which the money was borrowed—have been stalled as a result.

ax deductors, who after deducting TDS from specified payments, have not deposited the taxes in the Government account and continue to deploy the funds so retained for business purposes or for personal use are in for some serious trouble. According to the government such retention of dues beyond the due date is an offence liable for prosecution under Section 276B of the Income Tax Act, 1961. The defaulter, if convicted, can be sentenced to Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) for a term which can extend up to seven years. And the government is now seriously thinking of acting strictly with such entities. The TDS units of Income Tax Department have been taking up prosecution proceedings in suitable cases where TDS has been retained beyond the due date.

search ‘Top of the Pyramid’ report, other cities are fast catching up with metros as far as wealth creation is concerned; The report defines an ultra HNH as one with a minimum average net worth of Rs.250 million accumulated over the past 10 years. It reveals the emerging trends about spending, investing and income patterns of India’s Ultra High Networth Households (ultra HNHs) amidst prolonged economic uncertainty and states that the number of Indian ultra HNHs is estimated to have grown to around 100,900 in 2012-13, and is expected to triple to around 329,000 over the next five years. Consequently, the net worth of ultra HNHs is estimated to surge 4.5 times from an estimated Rs.86 trillion (86,000 billion) in 2012-13, to Rs.380 trillion (380,000 billion) by 2017-18. However, the economic downturn has caused a change in the ultra HNIs’ perception on spending. But they continue to spend to maintain their lifestyle—thereby ensuring that their non-discretionary spend in the near term won’t be curtailed—they are now exercising greater caution regarding discretionary purchases,” the report said. In keeping with their flamboyant lifestyle, they are seen spending lavishly on luxury homes, food, clothing, education, travel and family vacations. Purchasing a luxury home is a status symbol for the ultra HNI and he goes to great lengths to en-

sure exclusivity. Nearly 70-75% of wealth is invested in real estate as per the report. Luxury home purchases by ultra HNIs are not confined to India. Driven by globalisation, comparable valuations overseas and investment considerations, more and more ultra HNIs are purchasing luxury properties abroad in places such as Singapore, London and Dubai, it said. “Real estate investments have always delivered good returns in India, which is indicated by data through all the three editions of the report,” C. Jayaram, Joint Managing Director, Kotak Mahindra Bank. I see this asset class inviting more and more interest in spite of the current slackness in the market,” he said. Discipline and capital protection continued to be the line on investments. Allocation to asset classes such as debt continued to be significant as well. Traditionally, investment in real estate is seen as medium risk in India but ultra HNIs are increasingly capitalising on opportunities such as distress sales as part of their short-term investments. However, according to Mukesh Agarwal, President, CRISIL Research, compared to last year, there is more pessimism among ultra HNIs this year about an early economic recovery. “The caution that appears to be creeping into ultra HNI spending, particularly in discretionary spends should be an added concern,” he said.

Raghuram Rajan Is Next RBI Governor By A Business Reporter

R

aghuram Govind Rajan, the country's chief economic advisor to the Finance Ministry, will take up the mantle of governorship of the Reserve Bank of India for a term of three years from Dr. D Subbarao, who will demit office on September 4th this year. "Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has approved the appointment of Dr. Raghuram Rajan as the Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a term of three years, vice Dr. D. Subbarao upon completion of his (Dr. Subbarao's) tenure," an official release said, yesterday. Rajan becomes the 23rd governor of the central bank and takes over the job at a time when the country's economy is going through one of its toughest times. The rupee has plunged to a record low and economy is growing at its slowest pace in a decade. Off late the rupee has been playing truant and the RBI has trained its guns on speculators by announcing a couple of liquidity tightening steps. Its focus on rupee resulted in a monetary policy that was void of any growth incentives. The street had been hoping for a rate cut since inflation was seen coming down from its peak levels. On the other hand, its efforts to clamp down on liquidity had failed to strengthen the currency. Experts say a change of guard would not mean a reversal of policies. Rajan is an Indian economist

who served as Eric J. Gleacher Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago. Rajan is also a visiting professor for the World Bank, Federal Reserve Board, and Swedish Parliamentary Commission. He formerly served as the president of the American Finance Association and was the chief economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Rajan's previous work with the Indian government includes his helmsmanship of a Planning Commission-appointed committee on financial reforms, and as honorary economic adviser to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. "These are challenging times for the Indian economy and the RBI and government will work together…We don't have a magic wand to make the problems disappear. But absolutely we will deal with them., Rajan said in a statement shortly after the announcement.

Junior hockey eves return home after scripting history in World Championship

N

EW DELHI: The bronzemedal winning Indian junior women's hockey team today returned home amid fanfare and celebrations after scripting history at the seventh FIH Junior World Cup in Monchengladbach, Germany. Hawgood hopes junior eves feat will inspire senior men’s team By Saumojyoti S Choudhury

E

W DELHI: “Inspiration comes from different places and different persons”, according to Indian women hockey’s chief coach Neil Hawgood who hoped that the junior eves’ historic feat in the World Cup will inspire the senior men’s team to win the Asia Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia. The Indian girls created history on Sunday by winning the country’s first-ever bronze medal in the Junior Women Hockey World Cup after pipping England 3-2 on penalties in the third-fourth place play-off match. And the team’s coach said the junior eves’ success could not have come at a better time as it could inspire their senior male counterparts, who are busy preparing for the all-important Asia Cup sched-

more than happy,” the Australian told PTI in an exclusive interview. After having failed to secure a direct berth in the FIH Men’s World Cup in Hague, The Netherlands from the FIH World League Round 3 in Rotterdam, India will now have to win the Asia Cup in Malaysia to qualify for next year’s mega-event. But Hawgood sees no reason why the eight-time Olympic champions can’t win the upcoming eight-nation tournament. “But in the end they (men’s team) know what they have to do. They are good enough to play and win the uled to be held from August 24 to Asia Cup,” Hawgood said. The bronze-medal winning InSeptember 1. “It (the junior team’s success) might inspire them (senior dian junior eves returned home men’s team) but at the end of the today amid fanfare and celebrations day we did our job. Inspiration after scripting history at the seventh comes from different places and FIH Junior World Cup in Germany. But for Hawgood it is back to different people. If we can play a little part in inspiring them we will be business as he had already set his

eyes on his next target — the Asia Cup in Malaysia — which is also a qualifying tournament for the Women’s World Cup. “The feeling has sunk in. It has sunk in over there. It is past now as we have to get on quickly in the next couple of days. You can’t linger on to it for too long because in four weeks time we have to play a senior World Cup qualifier — the Asia Cup in Malaysia,” the coach insisted. “My next target is to try and make the senior team qualify for the World Cup,” he added. Contrary to the final result in the World Cup, the Indian eves did not start their campaign on a perfect note as they were thrashed 1-6 by Australia, who eventually finished sixth, in their opening encounter. But Hawgood said irrespective of the start, the girls were confident of a positive result from the marque

event. “Everyone has written about the score and margin of defeat against Australia but we have our own ways of analysing whether we have played well or not,” he said. “We went back and watched the game and we were quite happy with the way we played (against Australia). We created enough chances. It was actually a close game than what the scoreline suggest. From there on we were happy with the way we were played.” The coach observed that Indian women’s team is at par with the rest of the world in the Under-21 level. “I believe our girls in 3-4 years time will start playing really well. We are actually quite level with the rest of the teams in the Under-21 category. I think the average age of players in the senior teams is about 24-25 and ours is 20-21 so there lies the big difference,” Hawgood said.

UANGZHOU: China’s world number one mixed doubles pair were given a scare in the first round of the badminton world championships today after dropping the first game in an intense clash. Top-ranked Ma Jin and Xu Chen lost their opening game in Guangzhou 18-21 to unseeded Danish pair Mads Pieler Kolding and Kamilla Rytter Juhl, who found answers to their trademark nimble play and dynamite smashes. Xu sent back scorching returns of up to 277 kilometres per hour (172 miles), leaping in the air for his overhead shots, but the Danes held their nerve and withstood the onslaught. The home crowd fell into a nervous quiet as the Danish pair went up 10-6 in the second, but the Chinese duo pulled it back to take the game 21-17. A frenetic third game saw Xu nailing acrobatic shots, including one behind his back, as the crowd roared him on. The Chinese number ones eventually took victory in just under an hour, pumping their fists and shouting as they won the third game 21-13. Reigning world champs Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei, also from China and ranked second, will step into the spotlight later when they play Anthony Dumartheray and Sabrina Jaquet of Switzerland. The Chinese pair are favourites with fans after revealing they were a couple by hugging and kissing following their victory in the Japan Super Series in 2010. Mixed doubles third seeds Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia beat Malaysia’s Jian Guo Ong and Yin Loo Lim 21-14, 21-11 in their first-

Agrawal downs Chadha to win snooker title

M

UMBAI: Aditya Agrawal came from behind to beat favourite Ishpreet Singh Chadha and clinch the Malabar Hill Club-BSAM All India Under-25 Snooker Challenge 3 title here today. Down 2-3 in the best-of-7 frame encounter, Agrawal clawed his way back with some plucky display to prevail over the reigning junior and sub-junior champion of Maharashtra and winner of challenge 1 held at National Sports Club of India earlier. Son of experienced state cueist Arun, Agrawal won the title contest 63-56, 9-78, 44-72, 64-37, 59-71, 73-40, 71-59. Agrawal, who trains at the Indian Snooker Academy here under former national champion Sanjay Sawant, dropped the fifth frame after the two rivals were on level terms at the breather when Chadha got lucky and potted the pink when trying for a safety shot. Looking down the barrel, Agrawal captured the sixth frame with the help of small breaks to force the decider. He initially trailed his rival by 20 points in the last frame before catching up with Chadha and then taking the lead. Though Agrawal allowed his rival to come back when in firm control, he managed to ward off the late challenge and emerged triumphant. Agrawal won Rs 12,000 and Chadha got Rs 8,000.

Missy joins exclusive club B

ARCELONA: Missy Franklin climbed to the top of the podium one more time in Spain before heading off to college. With that step, the 18-year-old joined a very exclusive club. Missy, we’d like to introduce you to Michael Phelps, Mark Spitz, Ian Thorpe and Kristin Otto. “I still can’t really believe that it happened,” Franklin said. She claimed her record sixth gold medal of the world championships Sunday night, swimming the leadoff leg for the Americans in the 400-meter medley relay. Franklin gave the U.S. a slight lead in the backstroke, and her teammates—Jessica Hardy, Dana Vollmer and Megan Romano—made it look easy from there. The winning time was 3 minutes, 53.23 seconds, nearly two seconds ahead of runner-up Australia, with Russia claiming the bronze. “I had some really great races that I’m really proud of, and there’s still a bunch where I

have a lot of room to improve,” Franklin said. “So I’m really excited for the next year and the year after that and all the years following those.” It might be hard to top this one. Franklin became the winningest female swimmer ever at a world meet, eclipsing the record that was shared by Tracy Caulkins, who won five times in 1978, and Libby Trickett, who did it in 2007. Perhaps more impressively, Franklin became only the fifth swimmer to capture as many as six golds at either worlds or an Olympics. Quite a club it is. Phelps won six golds at the 2004 Athens Olympics, seven at the 2007 worlds and, of course, a record eight at the Beijing Olympics, eclipsing Spitz’s mark of seven at the 1972 Munich Games. Otto won six golds at the 1988 Seoul Olympics—an accomplishment since clouded by revelations of rampant dop-

ing in East Germany—and Thorpe claimed a half-dozen victories at the 2001 worlds. Now, there’s Franklin. She completed a grueling week in which she competed in eight events. She dropped out of the 50 backstroke after swimming in the preliminaries of the non-OIympic event, wanting to focus on more important races, and took fourth in the 100 freestyle. Otherwise, it was all gold. She improved on her performance at the London Olympics, where she was one of the biggest stars with four golds and a bronze.

Ganguly brought toughness to Indian cricket: Steve Waugh Jamnabai Narsee B

ARRACKPORE: Days after criticising Sourav Ganguly, legendary Australian cricketer Steve Waugh today hailed the former India skipper, saying he brought toughness to the Indian side. In his latest visit to the city in connection with Udayan, a rehabilitation home for children suffering from leprosy in colonies near Barrackpore which the Australian support, Waugh praised the retired Indian skipper and said he was a brilliant cricketer. “I mean this is Kolkata and Sourav you know is a great captain. Sourav brought that toughness to the Indian side,” Waugh said. Asked to compare Ganguly with captain ‘cool’ Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Waugh said: “Both are very different captains. They both have been very good.” Waugh backed the struggling Australian team, who is trailing 02 against England in the ongoing Ashes after the rain-marred third Test ended in a draw. “Well they did quite well in the last Test

match. It’s a young side that is capable of becoming a good side but it will take some time,” the former Australia skipper said. However, Waugh said it would be difficult for Michael Clarke’s men to level the series 22. “If Australia can make it 2-2, it will be an amazing result. But it’s going to be difficult,” he said. Waugh further reiterated that he is in support of the controvesial DRS what if some some decisions went against Australia in the ongoing Ashes. “They haven’t suffered because of the DRS. I have said it many times that the DRS is a very good system. The umpiring hasn’t been probably as strong but at the end of the day you get more decisions right than wrong.” “Everyone needs to interpret the system better. Of course India have their reservations. I think in the future there will be some technology that players as well as the media like,” Waugh added.

EW DELHI: Sports Minister Jitendra Singh was far from impressed as he took stock of India's preparations for next year's Commonwealth and Asian Games in a meeting with SAI officials here and expressed dissatisfaction with the progress made so far. "The Union Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Jitendra Singh held a meeting on August 5 with the officers of SAI to review the preparation for the Commonwealth Games 2014 at Glasgow and Asian Games 2014 at Incheon, Seoul," the Sports Ministry said in a statement. "During the meeting, Shri Jitendra Singh expressed his dissatisfaction at the fact that only a handful of National Sports Federations had given a detailed training programme for the probable medal winners identified for the games," it added. Singh gave several directions to the Sports Authority of India officials, including the setting up of a steering committee headed by Sports Secretary P K Deb to oversee the preparations. "The Minister directed that a Chief Coach along with his support staff be appointed for each discipline and their team should be entrusted with the responsibility for coaching of probables," the release said. "The Minister directed that a Steering Committee headed by Secretary (Sports) be set up and meet every week to review the progress of training sportsperson in each discipline by rotation. This system would hold till the conclusion of Commonwealth Games. It was also decided that

“The Minister was concerned that India would stand to lose at least 30 medals in the next Commonwealth Games due to the exclusion of sports discipline like Archery, Greco Roman Wrestling, Team events in shooting etc. These constituted more than 30 per cent of the total medals won by India in the Commonwealth Games 2010 at New Delhi. The Minister desired to know how this decision to exclude these events was taken some two years back without the views of India being properly articulated.”

"...The main expenditure of training of sportsperson would be from the plan head -Assistance to NSFs. Singh also expressed his displeasure at the exclusion of sports such as archery and wrestling from the CWG as it would impact India's medal haul. "The Minister was concerned that India would stand to lose at

least 30 medals in the next Commonwealth Games due to the exclusion of sports discipline like Archery, Greco Roman Wrestling, Team events in shooting etc," the release stated. "These constituted more than 30 per cent of the total medals won by India in the Commonwealth Games 2010 at New Delhi. The Minister desired to know how this decision to exclude these events was taken some two years back without the views of India being properly articulated," it added. The Minister directed Secretary (Sports) to take up the matter at the highest level with the Commonwealth Games Secretariat. The exclusion of these events will severely impact India's overall standing in the medals position in the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow. In comparison, the number of events dropped from the Asian Games is far less and consists mainly of non-field events like Chess, Billiards, Snooker etc.
