CITY OPINIONS

Should dance bars be started again in the state and in Mumbai particularly? Darshan Panchal Engineer Yes. The pubs and discos are in existence, which are the usual pick-up points for prostitutes. Considering this, the dance bars isn't bad.

Mohit Lala MBA Student Yes. Pubs and discos are for the rich and high class populace for entertainment and red light areas like Kamithipura for poor people or lower class populace. There isn't any such thing for the middle class populace for entertainment.

Shivshankar Dey Businessman No. The dance bars are just the pick-up points for prostitutes. There are several other avenues for entertainment.

Amol Kale Hotel Owner Yes. Mumbai's night life was considered to be the second best after New York's night life. The city's night life is the best source of generating income for the public exchequer.

ore than six weeks after his prize catch, Gordon Rodricks (77), angler and member of the Maharashtra State Angling Association for the past four decades, has still not got over the sheer size. There he was, on February 12, minding his own business, sitting and fishing with a Rod Reel and Float at the end of the Powai Bay area in the center of the lake, tied to one of the machans located there. The Float dipped very gently but distinctly. It was 12.30 pm. For the next 45 minutes, he would play a fish that would set a record for him and be counted as among the biggest from the lake in the last ten years. Gordon, who was using a 12 ft. Shakespeare Carbon Fibre Fishing Rod and 15 lbs Monofilament line, has been the Secretary of the MSSA intermittently for nearly 16 years and Vice-President, Environment and Development, as well. During his tenure he has created awareness in the state administration and the public about the need to conserve Powai Lake. As a result, the water body was included in The National Lake Conservation Programme and is today a place which Mumbai can be proud of for its fauna and flora and particularly its fish population. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai has played an important role in preserving and beautifying Powai Lake. But to get back to the highlight of Gordon's angling career, he did not know what he had caught with his small 1/0 Mustaad hook.“Normally,” says Gordon, “Catlas take off immediately they are hooked at 100 miles per hour. This one was steady for nearly five minutes, letting out huge volcano bubbles, and I was wondering what sort of fish I had hooked into. Heavy as a rock and pulling downwards with terrific strength. Then suddenly it realized it was hooked and took off. It came back, ran out, and dived about a 100 times in 45 minutes. I was alone and I wanted to just give up, open the reel and let the fish go. I was zapped and shaking all over, partly due to fatigue and partly due to

The old man and the lake! Gordon Rodricks of the Maharashtra State Anglers' Association with his record-breaking Catla from Powai Lake. excitement.” Then the fish surfaced and he saw this monster; he could not believe his eyes. But it went off again and again and again, till both Gordon and the Catla were finished and he managed to reel it in. Called Catla in Latin (and Bengali), the fish occurs in many parts of Asia and is popular both as a game fish and food fish in India. Bengalis are crazy about it and in fact relish the head which is used for a special dish called Mori Ghonto, a kind of fish biryani “which one can go on eating.” In Powai the MSAA introduce seedlings about 2-3 inches long and they grow to this size in about 3 years. Nor is 26.5 kg (58 lbs) the biggest catch from the lake. There has been one of 35 kg three years back and others in between. “In days gone by, particularly the 1930s – 40s, there have been catches as big as 40

kgs,” he says. But for Gordon, who has never caught anything beyond 16 kg, this is big enough! However, it is the climax of Gordon’s Angling Hobby spread over nearly 40 years. Never caught anything more than 16 kgs ever. And the sporting excitement this species provides is second to few others, for the Catla is one of the strongest Indian Game fishes, and landing one of this size involves tremendous strain on the body, high excitement and nervous exhaustion, and skill of course. In sport fishing, the fish are usually returned to the water, but according to the rules of the MSAA, some varieties may be taken home and consumed. The Catla is one of them. “The scales of this Catla are 2" in diameter. I intend to dry some of them for souvenirs,” says Gordon with great satisfaction.

owai Lake, home to a wide variety of Indian fishes, most belonging to the major Indian Carp family, noteworthily being the catla, rohu, mirgal, kalbose and grass carp. There is also large catfish, tilapia, gourami and even the Basa fish native to Vietnam. But most importantly, Powai Lake is also home to the Great Indian Mahseer, the internationally famous Indian game fish facing extinction but now bred as a conservation project by the Tata Hydro Electric Power Company at Lonavla in Maharashtra. “Most of these fishes do not breed at Powai Lake as the water chemistry does support breeding activity of the major Indian Carp. However, the Maharashtra State Angling Association (MSAA) is actively involved in introducing and

replenishing fish stocks here on a continuous basis so that all these fish are found and continue to survive and inhabit the water body. Around 3 to 4 lakh fishes are introduced into the lake as fingerlings every year,” says Gordon Rodricks, himself an angler and a member of the MSAA. A small proportion (less than five per cent) of these fish is caught by MSAA anglers. However, most is stolen by gangs of armed poachers who invade the lake 24 hours of the day and steal these prize specimens, according to sources. This in spite of MSAA providing its own security force to patrol the lake. Important varieties of fish like kalbose and mahseer, are returned to the lake after being caught by gently removing the hook and releasing them. Some other varieties may be taken home for the table.

Gavin Carr conducts as the South West Festival Chorus performs along with members of the Symphony Orchestra of India

By Neha Shende

‘M

essiah', George Frederic Handel's famous 18th century oratario, was last Friday performed in Mumbai for the first time after a gap of 52 years, at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). The three-part oratorio performed by the South West Festival Chorus with members of the Symphony Orchestra of India, was conducted by Gavin Carr, Chorus Director of the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus. It comrpises three parts – the annunciation to the shepherds, the passion of Christ and his glorification in heaven. Khushroo Suntook, Chairman, NCPA said, “A close friend in the UK introduced me to Tony Hastings (concert tour organizer and choral singer) and Gavin Carr, who mainly connected me to the South West Festival Chorus. Hastings talked about performing in Mumbai and we thought of the Messiah because, you know, the Messiah hadn’t been performed in Mumbai for quite a long time. And so this wonderful choir, all amateurs and one of the ladies is 90 years old, can you imagine? And they came here''. The performance also featured NCPA's vintage pipe organ that was specially designed for the Tata Theatre in 1988 by the German company Beckerath and tuned on its arrival in Mumbai by its Director Timm Sckopp. The 708pipe organ has an air system that includes an on-mounted blower motor designed for a sound-proof Organist Christopher Dowie of the South West Festival Chorus plays the organ during the enclosure. “Unfortunately, I don’t know concert.

what the reason was, but it suffered a little bit of neglect, you know, it deteriorated quite badly. And I was determined that when the funds were available, we should repair it'', Khushroo explained. The organ, that had sustained some damage was revived recently by Siegmund Tessmer and Sung Eun Kwak, technicians of the same company. The duo stayed in Mumbai for a month to work on the organ. Restoration cost aropund rs 22 lakh, but a new one would have cost perhaps ten times more! “The concert fortunately coincided with the repairs of the organ having been completed. So we were able to provide the organ also''. Khushroo continued. The organ player for the concert, Christopher Dowie said, "It played beautifully, did exactly what you expected of it. The organ had a clear, bright, sparkling sound". Dowie explained the importance of an organ in a concert. "The harmony isn't complete without the organ sound, it fills in the gaps. A good continuo (bass) player adds decorations to the harmony, almost like a bassist of Jazz", he said. The chorus enjoyed performing in Mumbai. Jan Capinski, the lead bassist said, "It was great, loved the audience! I didn't know that it was being played here after 52 years." Dowie added, "We play this kind of music all the time. It gets very routine for us. But here, it is rare and so, exciting. We saw two very very enraptured audiences in Goa and Mumbai". The concert played to a full house and received a two-three minute standing ovation in the end.

More to it than meets the eye, or the ear

The pipe organ is a musical instrument commonly used in churches or cathedrals that produces sound by driving pressurized air (called wind) through pipes selected via a keyboard. The world's oldest playable pipe organ is located in the Basilica of Valère in Sion, Switzerland. Built around 1435, most of the case is original, but only 12 pipes are original, as the rest have been replaced during restorations. The World's slowest piece of organ music: In 1985, John Cage wrote a piece for piano which in 1987 he transcribed for organ, "ASLSP" – "As slow as possible". In 1997, a group of German artists had the idea to take this title literally and perform the piece over a period of more than 600 years! The first chord was struck on February 5, 2003. The final note, it is said, will be sounded in 2639. The largest pipe organ ever built, based on number of pipes, is the Boardwalk Hall Auditorium Organ in Atlantic City, New Jersey and was built by the Midmer-Losh Organ Company between 1929 and 1932 Built in 1911 by M. P. Möller, the organ in the Cadet Chapel, United States Military Academy, West Point, New York is the largest all-pipe organ, in a religious structure, in the world.

oming down heavily on Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thaackeray, NCP chief Sharad Pawar yesterday trashed Uddhav's claim that he blocked NCP chief's entry into the NDA. Pawar dubbed it as a 'joke of the year' made out of sheer frustration. Speaking to reporters in the state NCP office Pawar said, “I initimately knew Sena chief late Balasaheb Thackeray. He was a mature person. I feel sorry that this is the level of thinking of the person who has taken the responsibility of running an organisation set up by Balasaheb Thackeray. He is making irresponsible statements. I think this is the reason his party is going down day by day”.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has listed names of 20 star campaigners that includes party president Arvind Kejriwal, Yogendra Yadav, Anjali Damania, Prashant Bhushan among others. Three Cong MPs among 11 who file nominations North. Rakesh Arora, Mohamed Rafiq Hussain Sheikh and Mohammed Mahima Siddique, all contesting as independents, also filed nominations for the Mumbai North Central seat. Priya Dutt visited the Siddhivinayak temple and sought the blessings of Lord Ganesha this afternoon. She also sought blessings at Chaitya Bhoomi, Maqdoom Shah Baba Dargah, Dhan Pothdar Gurudwara and Mount Mary Church. Dutt then undertook a padyatra from Bandra west to the Collector office with her MLAs Krishna Hegde, Baba Siddique and over 5,000 Congress activists. Mumbai Congress president Janardhan Chandurkar, MLAs Baba Siddique (Bandra), Krishna Hegde (Vile Parle) and Milind Kamble (Kurla) of the NCP signed as proposers on her nomination form. When asked about the absence of Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister and Chandivali MLA Mohammed Arif Naseem Khan and Kalina MLA Kripashankar Singh, which fuelled speculation about the rampant infighting in the city unit, Hegde said Khan was a cabinet minister and on election duty, while Kripashankar was in Jaunpur overseeing election preparedness of actor Ravi Kishen. Kamat was accompanied by MLAs Baldev Khosa, Suresh Shetty and Ashok Jadhav.

Amboli murder case solved after two weeks Claim Amboli police after arresting site supervisor and his colleague working at site where victim's body was found By Zuber Ansari

A

lmost two weeks after the incident, the Amboli Police has claimed to have solved the murder case of a 30-year-old man who was found murdered inside an under-construction building at Andheri (W) on the day of Holi last month. The police has arrested two accused in this connection – the site supervisor of the under-construction building and his colleague who allegedly killed the victim after performing unnatural sex with him. On the day of the inci-

dent, the Amboli police got a call about the dead body with multiple injuries lying at the under-construction building site. The police later identified him as Uttam Mandal. The body was sent to the nearby Cooper Hospital for a post-mortem analysis. During the investigation, it was realised that Mandal had been working at the same construction site and had quit the job around a year ago. The police have detained many persons in this connection before taking the supervisor of the site into custody. Sources from Amboli police station revealed that site supervisor Shambhu Roy has finally confessed to the crime and said that some dues were pending from Mandal. According to Roy, the victim had been delaying payment of the dues and he was thus killed in frustration.

On the early morning of January 5, the Hyderabad based techie was kidnapped from outside Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Tilak Nagar area of Chembur. Accused Sanap took her to an isolated place, which was marshy, in the area of Kanjurmarg in eastern suburbs. Subsequently, Sanap raped Anuhya and then killed her before fleeing from the crime spot. Later, the accused robbed the valuables and the laptop of the deceased and left for Nashik.

Injured patient found dead at KEM By Shwetha Kannan

By Zuber Ansari he Mumbai Police along with the expenditure experts appointed by the Election Commission have been keeping a close eye on candidates filing their nominations for the Lok Sabha elections at the District Collector Office. The money being spent by these candidates is being thoroughly monitored. The expenditure experts were seen maintaining a record of the vehicles used by the nominees to reach the nomination venue. Deputy Commissioner of Police Namdev Chavan said the cops had stationed around 70-80 police personnel including a few senior police inspectors and police inspectors at the Suburban Collector's office. We had barricaded an area of 100 metres and closed all the four entry-exit points to stop supporters who accom-

lleged carelessness from the side of an intern at the orthopaedic department of BMC run Cooper hospital at Vile Parle, cost a 50-year-old man his life, on Tuesday. This unknown man who had a crushed left lower leg had been brought to BMC run KEM hospital at Parel, during the early hours of Tuesday morning for further medical treatment. He had been accompanied by an intern from Cooper hospital in a hospital ambulance and reached KEM at around 3 am. Sources at KEM hospital said that CCTV footage shows the patient and the intern entering KEM hospital at around three in the morning and coming out of the casualty at 3:42 am. Apparently, the accompanying intern, on getting a call from Cooper hospital, leaving the patient unattended on a stretcher, left KEM premises. And after sometime, the man was found dead near the blood bank

of KEM hospital. Dr. A.K. Gvalani, acting dean, KEM hospital confirmed the incident and said, “The patient was unknown and had been brought for orthopaedic treatment to KEM. He had an already plastered left leg. It looks like the intern from Cooper hospital left him unattended after he was called back to Cooper. After some time, the patient was found lying on a stretcher, dead, near the blood bank at KEM. This is preliminary information that I have. We have set up an inquiry about this incident to get more facts.” Dr. Pravin Babbar, Assistant Medical Officer, Cooper hospital said, “The patient had been transferred from Cooper at around 2 am to KEM for further management as he had a crush injury in the left lower leg. The concerned intern who is from the orthopaedic department has been called tomorrow (April 2) for getting the right details and the facts.”

Salman’s retrial fails to begin, case deferred to April 28 By A Staff Reporter

T

he retrial in the hit-andrun case involving actor Salman Khan was on Tuesday deferred till April 28 by a sessions court as the prosecution sought time to produce witnesses in view of police deployment on election duty. Investigating officer Rajendra Kane informed the court that police were deployed on election duty and hence they were not yet prepared to go ahead with the trial which was to commence on Tuesday. Sessions Judge D.W. Deshpande asked the prosecution to produce on April 28 the first witness who was injured in the mishap in which the actor was involved, followed by eye witnesses in May. This is the second occasion when the fresh trial has not

begun, reports PTI. On March 26, three witnesses failed to turn up as they were either not available or untraceable. Salman's lawyer Srikant Shivade said the actor was ready to face the trial while prosecutor Jagannath Kenjalkar said they would produce witnesses from April 28. Clad in a white shirt and blue denim jeans, Salman came to the court and sat on a bench along with his bodyguard and sister Alvira. He keenly watched the proceedings and left as soon as the court announced the next date of hearing. The judge ordered a fresh

Even after the BEST General Manager's request, union leaders did not turn up for the discussion to find out an amicable solution over the scheduling of drivers and conductors. Meanwhile regular commuters of BEST suffered undue hardships on Tuesday. For the best and maximum utilisation of drivers and conductors working hours, the BEST introduced 'Canadian Schedule' software which makes regular shifts. The Union had objected that some employees are forced work for more than 12 hours a day. Last year, the BEST put this software in two depots. It was successful and so it was implemented in another ten depots. All employees as well as supervisory staff were happy with the implementation of Canadian Software. After several rounds of discussion with the Unions, the BEST had taken a decision to implement this software on pan city level. trial in this case, 12 years after the actor ran over his car on people sleeping on the road. Although the prosecution has submitted a list of 64 witnesses, it would not examine all of them, according to the public prosecutor. The prosecution had earlier submitted documents such as death certificate (of the person who was killed in the mishap) and injury certificates (of those who were injured) in this case. The court had admitted these documents after Salman's lawyer submitted his say on admissibility of the documents. The court observed, 3,700 buses ply in the city transporting around 50 lakh passengers daily. The buses have gone off the roads since early morning causing virtual chaos in the city. BEST General Manager O.P. Gupta said, “I had personally request union leaders to come to headquarters and discuss the matter as their strike is causing great hardship to the passengers. ADAPT releases manifesto for disabled

Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2, 2014

By A Staff Reporter

M

alini Chib, activist and author, founder and chairperson of the ADAPT Rights group (ARG), citing India's vast disabled population, on Monday announced the release of the organisation's political charter and stated, “We are 100 million strong and we will be heard”. According to the charter, there will be five priorities that the group will be pushing onto the country's agenda: The Right to Education The Right to Vote The Rights of Disabled Women The Right to Suitable Health Services The Right to Nondiscriminatory Employment The Right to an Accessible Environment As a supplement to the charter, ARG has said that they will produce a series of position papers as guidance for all of the major political parties. These position papers will include ARG's guidance on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill 2014 which the group believes needs to be made more robust to bring it in line with India's commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabled People. According to Dr. Mithu Alur, founder and chairperson of ARG's Parent organisation ADAPT, “It is our deepest hope that the politicians hear the voices and concerns of India's disabled people, we have the votes to sway any election”. In the Preamble to the manifesto, ADAPT has declared that the concerns of India's disabled must be taken seriously. “We have laws that have been on the books for almost 20 years now, that are not being fully implemented. Roughly 90 per cent of Disabled Indians can-

not get the services they deserve. We have not done the work needed to reshape attitudes and in many areas disability is still seen as a taboo or worse something to be met with derision and violence”. Even conservative estimates put the proportion of disabled people at more than 10 per cent and they are denied the exercise of their fundamental rights. Here are some of the salient features of the charter: Right to Education That compulsory attendance in school must be enforced for disabled children. That the right to education as guaranteed in the (2009) Right to Education Act be enforced and fully implemented, universally across India. That Inclusive Education training become a requirement of teacher certification for every level of the Education system. That Disabled People, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Other Backward Class, Minorities, Girls and other Disadvantaged Groups need to be central to all future Education initiatives. That all education settings including but not limited to Schools, Support providers, and government administrative offices be made accessible to all. Right to Vote That all polling places be physically accessible to wheelchair users. That all voting materials be available in accessible formats including Braille and large print ballots That the right to physical assistance in voting be guaranteed and ensured That the right to vote for all Disabled people regardless of impairment be guaranteed and ensured. Rights of Disabled women Remove the 100 workdays cap in the MNREGS. Revise

work norms and ensure payment of minimum wages to disabled women. Ensure implementation of crèches at worksites and Implement a universal and mandatory child care scheme. Recognise working women in the organised and unorganised sector as independent economic units and ensure equal and index linked minimum wages of at least Rs.10,000 per month. Fast track all cases of violence against women within a legally bound period of time and implement all the recommendations of the Justice Verma Committee Report. Include sexual violence against disabled women and women from SC, ST and minority communities as aggravated sexual assault. Make marital rape an offence. Safeguard S498A of the Indian Penal Code. Aggressively prosecute anyone who participates in a forced sterilisation. Legally ensure the property rights of all women on the same terms as men. Right to Accessibility That physical access be improved so that people with disabilities can access all areas of public and social life. Including access to all public spaces as well as all modes of public transportation in the same manner as all other members of our society. That all new public planning include pavements and that they be required to have curb cuts and slopes for access by wheelchairs, zebra crossings and railway platforms must be engraved for the blind and visually impaired and crossings must have auditory warning signals installed. All public buildings must be universally accessible. The Government must do more to ensure that people with disabilities can access information and the internet

in ways that are suitable to their needs. Accessibility should be made mandatory in all public libraries across India, and all government websites must meet standard web accessibility guidelines. The Government must ensure that access requirements are built into all government contracts, whether local, regional or national, ensuring also that there are clearly defined with penalties for noncompliance, which are imposed through due legal process, as and when occasions may warrant. Right to Suitable Health Services That the government make the provision of disability equality training mandatory for the staff of all government health service delivery units in India. Optimal availability and accessibility to mainstream health services – especially in the rural parts of India – with primary care physicians playing a central role. The same rights to control their own health care decision making as non-disabled Indians. Health professionals must acquire competencies in the essentials of health care for disabled people, and awareness that not all health problems faced by them are because of their disability. It follows, then, that training in attitude and communication skills is as important as possessing clinical skills and must, therefore, be made part of the training programs. The government must ensure that guidelines on specific health issues pertaining to people with disabilities are available through Internet or through media devices in state-run and private medical colleges and all public libraries. The government must facilitate training programmes for health professionals who are

Know the rights of autistic children By A Staff Reporter

O

n the eve of World Autism Awareness Day, Forum for Autism (FFA), a support group formed by parents whose children are autistic has come out with a charter of rights that talk about the rights of not only children suffering from Autism but also the rights of parents of such children and how institutions and professionals helping such families should behave. The objective of this charter is to create awareness among families, schools, doctors, therapists and the society on the whole about the needs of such special children and to let them know that these children are as human as any other child and have rights similar to

each one of us. “Several cases of autistic children being discriminated against, being called names, being abused physically as well as mentally are very frequently heard of. This is because there is a lack of awareness about this disorder. Also, parents of such children are not aware of the rights of their children as well as their own rights. Another problem is that people don't come forward and speak about issues that their children face in schools and similar institutions because they fear the withdrawal of whatever little services that their children are getting if they speak up. These problems are leading to rights of special children being taken away

from them. As World Autism Awareness month is on now, the focus is on the rights of autistic children”, said Dr. Vibha Krishnamurthy, Paediatrician, specialist in developmental disorders. Some of the rights of special children and their parents that the charter talks about are to be treated as humanly as any other child would be treated, to be in a safe and accommodating learning environment, to be stress free while learning, to be understood and treated with kindness. The child can not be subjected to bullying and humiliation and ridicule, will not be given corporal punishments or be restrained or secluded in the guise of teaching or disciplining

them. For parents, they have the right to be present in any situation especially legal or official and to be a part of all important decisions regarding their education, they can monitor their child's teaching-learning process for possible abuse to state a few. This charter, drawn up on the basis of experiences of parents with autistic children, would be first be given to families with autistic members, doctors, therapists and institutions dealing with such people so that each of them know about their rights and roles to play in the development of such children and then it would be taken up further with government officials at the state level or maybe even the Centre.

interested in acquiring competencies in health issues of disabled people. The government must foster research on health issues of people with disabilities and ensure that this is made possible through encouraging co-operation between academic institutions. Both, general and specific health monitoring programmes with and for disabled people must be developed and implemented. Right to Employment. The government must provide more funds to help enable disabled people to access as well as stay in the workplace. This would also include extending the provisions of schemes such as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to people with disabilities in rural areas of India and removal of the 100 workdays cap in the MNREGS. The government must strengthen the PWD Act to ensure that the requirements of disabled employees and

applicants are protected and enforced. The government must examine the factors that continue to impact upon disabled people's attempts to access employment across the country, in both rural and urban areas. The government has to ensure that bodies such as Employment Tribunals are set up and are empowered to order reinstatement / re-engagement in accordance with the provisions of the concerned law/s. The government must ensure it plays its part in guaranteeing the legal rights of employees who, through due process, have proven that they were wrongly terminated on the basis of disability-related discrimination. The government must lead the way and improve its own employment practices, setting and achieving target numbers for disabled people's employment in government service.

Treason: Any charge good enough to eliminate Musharraf C

an Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan's army chief who got rid of civilian establishments and took over rule be considered as a traitor? President Nawaz Sharif appears to think so. He is evidently bent on eliminating the former army dictator on some criminal charge or the other. Musharraf who had returned to Pakistan to contest elections was arrested. Now a special court has indicted him for treason. It has also framed other charges against him: He declared emergency, he dismissed the chief justice and brought in army rule. On the basis of such charges, can Musharraf be called a traitor? About this, the former army chief says it is quite absurd he should be charged for treason. There cannot be two opinions, he says, that he is a patriot: He says he took over the country to deal with growing Islamist extremism. He defends himself quite convincingly. He has served in the army for as many as 45 years during which he has fought in two wars. For loving and being loyal to the country, he has been indicted for treason. Pakistan has been most of the time ruled by the army. The civilian rule has never succeeded. Maybe it is the mindset of the people there which makes it impossible for democracy to survive. Pervez Musharraf is only as guilty as other tyrannical dictators of Pakistan. Pervez might be guilty of other crimes but he certainly cannot be accused for treason. Imposing emergency cannot be a charge which attracts a death sentence. In our own country, Indira Gandhi had imposed emergency but she was not tried for treason. She came out from it all and became the prime minister once again. The Pakistani establishment has decided to ensure the death of Musharraf because he could be a thorn in its path and pose continuing challenge to Nawaz's survival. Any reason is good enough to get rid of him — a charge of treason indeed.

he Congress seems to have finally got some zing in its lackluster campaign. The credit, say party insiders, goes to Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra who have stepped in to shore up Rahul Gandhi’s efforts and restore the flagging morale of leaders and workers alike. Mother and daughter are increasingly visible at Rahul’s Tughlak Lane residence which has become the hub of all election-related activity. Priyanka particularly has been spending long hours there, often putting in as many as ten to twelve hours a day. And her brief is not just to manage the tour programmes of her mother and brother, as the Congress had claimed when she first made her appearance at the party’s then functional war room on Gurudwara Rakabganj Road several weeks ago. Actually, Priyanka is emerging as the chief backroom strategist while Sonia has taken full charge as party president and has the final word on every decision. Rahul has been relieved of the responsibility of managing the campaign and is free to travel wherever he wants and mingle with people. It was Priyanka who insisted that Amarinder Singh challenge Arun Jaitley in Amritsar. She spoke to him at length to bring him around. The move to draft Amarinder into the battle made ripples. He is the tallest Congress leader in Punjab and his entry not only made the BJP, and Jaitley, sit up, it also boosted the morale of the party’s state unit which has been down in the dumps because of factional fights and the obvious reluctance of senior leaders like Manish Tewari to contest the election. Tewari had a genuine health reason but persistent rumours about him had taken their toll. Priyanka is also personally monitoring the crucial poll battle in UP where Modi must win big to realise his ambition of becoming the next prime minister. The choice of Congress candidate to take on Modi in Varanasi has been left to her and she is getting daily inputs on the voters’ mood in the constituency to help her make a decision. She has also suggested changes in the UP candidates list which are likely to be an-

nounced soon. The Congress is thinking of creating a Brahmin ring around Varanasi in an effort to divide the upper caste votes so that Modi can’t consolidate. This means putting up Brahmin candidates in at least five seats in the region including Azamgarh, Ghosi, Gazipur, Jaunpur and Chandoli. Priyanka is believed to have approved the plan. Now the party ahs to find suitable nominees. Clearly, it’s no longer a Modi versus Rahul battle. The entire Gandhi family has plunged in to rescue the Congress party’s sinking for-

preparing the BJP’s election manifesto and wouldn’t have time to campaign till the job was finished. The workers felt slighted and there was a small fracas in which anti-Joshi slogans were raised. It wasn’t quite the auspicious start that he was hoping for. Joshi left in a huff but it was clear that he had left a trail of disgruntled workers behind. He had to hotfoot it back to Kanpur a few days later to soothe frayed nerves in the local unit. According to BJP insiders, Joshi is handicapped in Kanpur because of sectional interests. The local unit is dominated by Arun Jaitley loyalists and Sushma Swaraj loyalists. Joshi faces a tough battle.

alu Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav received a shock when security officers at Delhi airport insisted on checking the cargo load in their private aircraft recently. Mulayam took particular umbrage because one of the senior officials of the CISF, which handles airport security, belongs to the UP cadre. In typical feudal style, Mulayam tried to intimidate the official by reminding him of his UP origins. To his credit, the official stood firm. According to a source posted at Delhi airport, the official firmly but politely reminded Mulayam that he was only following orders from the Election Commission. The EC has ordered that all cargo coming in on private planes should be checked. It’s ostensibly a security check but it also helps to screen for black money and illegal arms at election time. Mulayam was not convinced till the EC order was read out to him in full. Lalu too threw a fit when officials wanted to check the bags on his plane. His baggage was held up at Delhi airport for more than two hours as Lalu aides argued with security officials. The officers stood their ground, leaving Lalu’s men with no choice but to give in. If only babus showed some spine at other times too, the bureaucracy would have lived up to its reputation as the steel frame of India.

True faith dwells in believing God’s Word A

DIN Ballou died in August, 1890, and there was as obituary notice of him in an American journal of Christian views (ReligioPhilosophical Journal, August 23). In this laudatory notice it is recorded that Ballou was the spiritual director of a parish, that he delivered from eight to nine thousand sermons, married one thousand couples, and wrote about five hundred articles; but there is not a single word said of the object to which he devoted his life; even the word "non-resistance" is not mentioned. Precisely as it was with all the preaching of the Quakers for two hundred years and, too, with the efforts of Garrison the father, the foundation of his society and journal, and his Declaration, so it is with the lifework of Ballou. It seems just as though it did not exist and never had existed. We have an astounding example of the obscurity of works which aim at expounding the doctrine of non-resistance to evil by force, and at confuting those who do not recognise this commandment, in the book of the Tsech Helchitsky, which has only lately been noticed and has not hitherto been printed. Soon after the appearance of my book in German, I received a letter from Prague, from

a professor of the university there, informing me of the existence of a work, never yet printed, by Helchitsky, a Tsech of the fifteenth century, entitled 'The Net of Faith.' In this work, the professor told me, Helchitsky expressed precisely the same view as to true and false Christianity as I had expressed in my book 'What I Believe.' The professor wrote to me that Helchitsky's work was to be published for the first time in the Tsech language

MATTER & SPIRIT in the Journal of the Petersburg Academy of Silence. Since I could not obtain the book itself, I tried to make myself acquainted with what was known of Helchitsky, and I gained the following information from a German book sent me by the Prague professor and from Pypin's history of Tsech literature. This was Pypin's account: "'The Net of Faith' is Christ's teaching, which ought to draw man up out of the dark depths of the sea of worldliness and his own iniquity. True faith consists in believing God's Word; but now a time has come when men

mistake the true faith for heresy, and therefore it is for the reason to point out what the true faith consists, if anyone does not know this. It is hidden in darkness from men, and they do not recognise the true law of Christ. "To make this law plain, Helchitsky points to the primitive organisation of Christian society—the organization which, he says, is now regarded in the Roman Church as an abominable heresy. This Primitive Church was his special ideal of social organisation, founded on equality, liberty, and fraternity. Christianity, in Helchitsky's view, still preserves these elements, and it is only necessary for society to return to its pure doctrine to render unnecessary every other form of social order in which kings and popes are essential; the law of love would alone be sufficient in every case. "Historically, Helchitsky attributes the degeneration of Christianity to the times of Constantine the Great, whom Pope Sylvester admitted into the Christian Church with all his heathen morals and life. Constantine, in his turn, endowed the Pope with worldly riches and power. — Leo Tolstoy

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2, 2014

Come elections, political gimmickry begins THIS refers to 'AAP ka night out' (ADC, Mar.29). Now, Satish Jain happens to be the latest in a long list of politicians, who are resorting to crass gimmickry, trying to woo the electorate. Only a few days back, his supreme leader Arvind Kejriwal travelled by the suburban train during peak hours, severely inconveniencing the regular commuters, in the process. Some other political leaders visit remote hamlets and partake in a meal in a Dalit home just to show that their hearts beat for the poor and the downtrodden. This rank tokenism is soon forgotten once the elections are over. One is reminded of 'the nightingale of India' Sarojini Naidu, who commented thus regarding Mahatma Gandhi's train travel in 3rd. Class – "it is very costly for the nation to keep Mahatma Gandhi poor"! — Chandramohan, Ghatkopar

THE statement made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi at the elction rally in Jammu & Kashmir by calling country's defence minister A.K. Antony and Aam Admi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal a Pakistani agent is the most disgraceful and shameful. It does not suit the image and credibility of the prime ministerial candidate which shows his frustration. I strongly feel that the foul language used by Modi in all the political rallies shows that he does not have respect for the PM's post or its chair and is unfit to be prime minister of the country who believes in divisive politics and wants to keep a watch on the country like the watchman which will not be ac-

cepted by the people of the country who have already thrown out watchmen like the Britishers in the past from this country for dividing the people to rule the country. Modi just wants to become prime minister of the country by hook and crook without bothering about the country or its people and the consequences.

IPL 7 too will be just a farce AFTER the IPL fiasco in the 6th edition, we are now again hearing about next season's fixtures and the players' auction. We have come to know that it is indeed a farce tournament and no one should pay heed to such a fixed tournament. Now the news is that fresh auctions will be held for the new season of the domestic T-20 League, but teams can retain their basic identity by retaining popular faces. The popular faces in the earlier edition were caught napping while fixing matches and the academic interest was lost when a star studded team's organiser himself was in the thick of controversy. The popularity is going down slowly and one day the tournament will meet the ultimate end. As fans have started relating to star players, the governing council has allowed franchisees to retain as many as five players with an added option of the the 'Right to Match". We have seen the right to fix matches

SAME OLD STORY: In the sixth edition of the IPL, it was an open secret that matches were fixed and there was a lot of controversies. The seventh edition will be no better to make Mumbai Indians Champions in both IPL as well as Champions League matches. Matches were fixed even before a ball being bowled and that shows

the standard of cricket in IPL T-20 cricket. Why then so much hype, hoopla and hysteria about the 7th Edition of IPL? — C.R. Krishnan, Nerul

Not a single committee meeting conducted since the last 10 months

T

hree years after the state government informed the Bombay High Court that the state has formed three zonal advisory committees to manage traffic and penalise violators of traffic rules in the city, it seems that the department is neglecting its functioning as the committee has not conducted a single meeting since the last 10 months. This was revealed after a complaint was made to Chief Justice of Bombay High Court by advisory committee members recently. The orders to form an advisory committee on traffic were given in 2011 by the division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Girish Godbole hearing a public interest litigation seeking stricter implementation of traffic rules and regulations. Zonal Traffic Advisory (East) Sub-committee member Anil

Galgali, Deepak Dave and Adv. Subhash Nalawade wrote a letter to the Chief Justice claiming that the traffic police has been neglecting the advisory committee which is constituted after the High Court’s order and no single meeting has been conducted since the last 10 months. “The High Court has passed orders on April 26, 2011 for the formation of traffic zonal committees for South Mumbai, Eastern Suburbs and Western Suburbs with the involvement of the public and police and also the agencies involved in resolving the issues of traffic in Mumbai. The zonal DCP was head of the zonal sub committee and local assistant commissioner of BMC, petitioners, Western India Automobile Association's (WIAA) two members and local residents are part of the sub committee. cal attitude of the administration regarding the High Court-constituted zonal traffic advisory committee and so we made a complaint to the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court that not a single meeting has been held in the last 10 months by this committee. The traffic police is also neglecting this”, Galgali told the

ADC. He further said, “There were several issues pending and now its become useless as the concerned department’s head were not present and now it has lost relevance as a Senior Officer like Asst. Commissioner of BMC did not attend the meetings while deputing junior officers. This has led to

fic advisory committee have demanded to the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), BMC Commissioner Sitaram Kunte and WIAA Chairman that it was directed to meet every month and senior officers of their department should attend the monthly meeting”, said Dave.

ith the way educational paradigms are evolving presently, students rarely seem to get adequate time off for themselves away from studies. But despite the stress of academics surrounding students at all times, the aspect of immersing oneself in hobbies and extra-curricular activities still takes certain precedence. No doubt that covering the academic portion becomes quite difficult for students, not only at the school level, but also at the college level. Hobbies and extra-curricular activities provide them a much-needed recovery time to not just relax from focusing on studies, but also to evaluate their progress without much fuss. Hobbies like reading and music-oriented interests help students to reflect back on their studies while providing a calming influence. According to Avinash S., a third-year engineering student, “Hobbies provide an emotional outlet for everyone and as students one really needs a hobby or two to fall back on after a tiring day in school or college.” Though it is still a prevalent belief that music, especially if the student is interested in singing or playing musical instruments, is an unwanted distraction, Avinash adds that he regroups well before exams after strumming his guitar for a few minutes. Students cannot be expected to pick up a hobby suddenly, out of the blue. The role of parents becomes extremely important as they are the ones who Continued on pg 14 «

Can you tell me more about Sociology

If I plan to major in Sociology, what are my future career prospects? —Dia Students who graduate in Sociology and enter the job market directly find themselves competing with students from other fields. However, they have an advantage of being able to understand the key social factors and also have a firm grasp on research methods. An undergraduate sociology major provides valuable insights into social factors such as ethnicity, gender, age, educational background and social class that affect work and how organizations operate. Thus the sociological perspective is crucial for working in today’s multi-ethnic and multinational business environment. An advanced degree specializing in the sociology of work, occupations, labour and organizations can lead to teaching, research and applied roles. Those who study sociology may pursue careers in human resources, personnel and industrial relations. Students who especially enjoy research design, statistics and data analysis can seek positions in marketing, public relations and organizational research.

What will I have to study in this program and which careers will be open to me through this degree? —Kunal Through Environmental Studies, students learn how to move towards a more sustainable future for human and ecological systems. Courses in environmental studies provide training not only in the physical and social sciences, but also in writing, critical thinking, quantitative analysis, project and team management, and more. An Environmental Studies Major offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding and responding to environmental problems. From the natural sciences, students learn experimental techniques and methods of analysis needed to make accurate observations, to document change, and to understand the dynamics of healthy landscapes and functioning ecosystems. From the humanities and social sciences, students gain insights into human behavior and the workings of the social, political, and economic institutions. If I do the IB at 10+2, can I still do my undergraduate degree in India? —Ron It depends on the undergraduate programme you are planning to pursue. If you want to study a commerce based course like BMS or BAF, which does not require entrance exams, you can definitely do it after the IB. Your admissions will be based on your IB predicted scores given by your school. However, if you want to pursue courses like engineering or medicine which have entrance exams in May, it is not advisable to take the IB because the entrance exams take place at the same time as the IB board exams. A fun day for underprivileged children T

he most important driver to improving access to education for low-income groups is the belief that underprivileged students can and will succeed when given quality education. Fun-filled activities and stalls were set-up to pool in funds for community outreach, thereby collecting enough to sponsor the three-year long education for five children. Additionally, parents jointly donated 100 school bags and 30 recreational and education game sets. Not only this, FLAG also opened their doors to two NGOs - Aseema Charitable Trust and Parwaaz – We Rise, by giving them space to sell their handmade products to the school students and parents, thereby earning their livelihood.

FPAC was initiated in 2013 inspired by the Action Cycle and with a vision to reach out to society in many charitable ways. The school curriculum model aims to develop an inquiring, knowledgeable and caring community who help to create a better and

“College life is something you simply must experience,” says Singer/Radio Jockey/Anchor Lavanya Padmanabhan

I

am a Commerce Graduate with vocational majors in Advertising, Sales Promotions and Sales Management from H. R. College, Churchgate. My college was small, sweet and cozy. As H.R. and K.C. were almost joint, we didn’t have a great campus to boast about. But still it was really special and we also had a small little canteen tucked away in a corner which was our favourite adda! All the way, right from KG to my SSC, I had been a convent student. So I attended an all girls’ school always. College was the first time I was actually exposed to co-education. Naturally I was a little excited, a little tensed, a little scared. I was a mixed bag of emotions on the very first day! Yes I was ragged. But fortunately to my benefit I was asked what I would do to please my seniors so that I could gain entry into college. I promptly sang a song hoping they would be impressed and let me in. Not only did they let me in, I became an integral part of the college and inter college cultural contingent from that moment onwards! My professors were amazing at what they did. They were a bunch of vibrant teachers full of life and zest. Merely looking at them made us want to attend lectures! Also their teaching was such that while writing your exams we remembered exactly how they had explained it in the lecture. They were all collectively so encouraging, ever helping and willing to explain over and over again till we understood. College was

so much fun and exciting; thanks to all of them! Studies...ah! Most of it for me was done at the last minute. I was so active in extra-curricular activities; starting from when college opened in June right until almost December-January I would only be preparing for various competitions, both at college and intercollege levels. Post that I would suddenly remember that I had to study too! As I said, my teachers and professors were awesome. So I would grasp most of it in class itself and a little last minute studying ensured I did pretty well in my exams too. I used to stay at Prabhadevi and college was at Churchgate. So yes, those were the good old days of ‘Mumbai Locals’! I had my fair share of attending college, taking part in innumerable competitions, bunking and going for movies, shopping at Fashion Street (then pretty popular with college kids) and of course chilling at the adda at the college canteen for hours with friends, not to forget the yummy samosas at the canteen and the dosa and sandwich walas right outside college! Those were some awesome days of life, unforgettable! Besides, Marine Drive was a favourite chilling place. There used to be the Natraj Ice cream Parlour those days, right on Marine Drive. We would eat ice creams one by one and be there almost all afternoon till the owner got sick of us and shooed us away. Then we would take a nice evening walk along Marine Drive. The college fests and prom nights were also fun socialising

my college but also from other participating colleges. A lot of them I still bump into and it’s always lovely to see them, doing so well in their respective lives! I was way too busy with curricular activities and a little bit of studying on the side too; so I had no time for pranks! But one cute incident - My principal used to live in the college premises. We would often be practicing with the college band well into the evening and he would lovingly invite us home and serve us all some tea and snacks. He and my then Vice Principal Dr. Indu Shahani were ever so helpful and encouraging! I really cannot thank them enough all my life. College life is something you simply must experience! College education and experiences helps to shape your personality. Education shapes you. It actually makes you who you are. Your character, your behavior, how you conduct yourself; the basis of all this is your education. So no matter what you study and what you work as this basic help is always there from your education. Besides, I have learnt music for almost 20 years under the guidance of Padma Bhushan Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khansaab and my ‘roohani’ guru Padmashri Hariharan ji. ny economy cannot hope to be successful and have a sustained balanced growth without the crucial participation of one half of its population. Yet in India, women account for less than 30 per cent of the total workforce. According to the International Labor Organization’s Global Employment Trends report, 2013, the participation of women in India’s labour force was a dismal 22 per cent in 2011-12. Out of 131 countries with available data, India ranks 11th from the bottom in female labour force participation. In India, challenges abound for women in their participation in the economy. But, increasingly several sectors of industry in India are coming to realise the importance of having women on board in large numbers. Not only do women employees bring more vitality and vibrance to an organisation’s work culture, they also bring a muchneeded human touch to daily work. A number of industries particularly media and hospitality among others today bank heavily on women. Juggling between responsibilities at home and at work, women employees also cope adequately with high stress levels. In such a scenario, recognition for their good work and contribution to an organisa-

tion can make a lot of difference to their will power. Here are some options employers may try to make them feel special: Gift vouchers: Often companies greet their women employees on Women’s Day etc. with flowers and wishes. They can do a little more to make them feel valued. Give them gift vouchers they can redeem to buy their favourite items/experiences (like a spa treatment etc). Juggling between work and home gives her little time to actually go out and shop for her requirements – so giving her an option to shop online and bring in the convenience of delivery at home is something she will really appreciate. This would give her more time to herself and her family. Crèche facility for children: For women who are working mothers, there is no worry bigger than that of their children – Did my baby take her milk, did she eat on time, hope she is not hurt etc. If you as an employer are serious about keeping your women employees happy, start a crèche facility for their children in your company building. By keeping them closer to their children and giving them the satisfaction that they are being looked after, you can relieve their stress manifold and improve their

productivity. Hospital appointments for health screening: As a country, Indians are yet to convert to the idea of getting themselves checked and screened regularly. Women, more so, are used to putting their health as the last priority. Sending them for a day of health check up and screening for heart disease, breast cancer etc. is a precious reward employers can offer. This is much like returning the human touch the women themselves bring to the work place and telling them ‘we care’. Send them out: If you are a small company and do not have the budget to do something on a larger scale, just book a table for lunch at a restaurant for all your women employees or give the tickets for an amusement park or film to chill out. Call a counsellor for a chat session: If you desire to do something to help ease out the stress and problems of your women employees, book half a day at the company for a counsellor or a psychologist with whom the women can share their problems and have an honest discussion. Interpersonal engagement with employees goes a long way in keeping them satisfied and secure. Make your women employees feel special this women’s day. They will love it and return back in loyalty.

Bridging the divide, building lives That’s when they decided to create a compost pit for the villagers to dump their biodegradable waste as all other previous waste disposal measures in the village were ineffective. The students also dug and cleaned, and made a volleyball court, and played several games with the villagers. To raise awareness about the environment, the kids planted trees, performed street plays on several social issues, like the status of women, importance of education and perils of substance abuse, amongst others. This was a source of entertainment and awareness for the villagers. One of the novel initiatives of this project was setting up a library and a computer room. The children cleaned and painted a room to convert it into a ‘centre of learning’. “One of the students donated a computer. The school kids taught the villagers basics of MS Word and how to use the internet. Many children donated books making the library functional,” stated

Sudeshna. In all the visits they had a community kitchen where the villagers and students made several dishes for everyone. Students participated in medical camps to check the health levels of the villagers. Bonding and helping the villagers was one aspect of the initiative. The school wanted them to get financially independent too. So the kids taught the women how to make agarbattis, diyas and jewellery, which they could sell. The class on ‘art of tie and dye with cloth’ also got a very good response. “There wasn’t just a paradigm shift at a practical level. These activities gave a major boost to their self-esteem too. Now they are financially better, and that has made a lot of difference,” added the principal. It is when we share that we receive. The soul knows best the high it feels when one gives unconditionally. Ask these children of Jamnabai Narsee. They will relate you that same tale.

T

he village of Ashte in Raigarh district of Maharashtra wears a new, confident look today. The villagers are more informed, women are adequately self-sufficient, and children, computer literate. Thanks to an initiative of Jamnabai Narsee School along with an NGO – Anant Vikas – Ashte will now create a different history. The exhilarating journey began when the students of Grade 11 ISC section ‘adopted a village’ along with Anant Vikas. It is an initiative of the Mind Genius Charitable Trust which is working towards bridging the gap between urban and rural lives through its project named Youth Empowerment Mission (in association with the United Nations). “At the onset, we thought it would just be a series of one-day visits where the children would take a perfunctory glance at the vil-

lage happenings,” shared Sudeshna Chatterjee, principal of Jamnabai Narsee School. “I’m glad we were proved wrong.” Three divisions had three oneday trips to the village, each with an entailing objective – empowering the villagers, creating a sense of community, and enlivening the atmosphere of the village. “Our step-by-step approach to initiate change in the village began with a baseline survey and rural appraisal. We mapped the village and interviewed the residents to deduce what amenities the village needed desperately. The focus lay on the common problems faced. Then, we came up with a plan, which included creating mediums for self-sustenance, improving the general facilities in the village, formulating women empowerment measures, and fostering a spirit of community,” she deciphered.

Professors believe that students must take project assignments in the right spirit and not be just any other task to be completed to sum up their grand total. “When students just lift content online, it is quite dampening for the examiner as well as project after project you come across the same material with no originality of thought,” says Professor Mehra. “Project assignments are meant for students to practically go out there, collect information, meet people and thus fuel their creativity. With the elections coming up, we asked city youngsters whether they’d step out to cast their vote. We also asked them whether they felt it was important to do so! Yes, I would definitely vote. Election statistics show that every single vote counts. Last year in Delhi, Shazia Immi lost in the R.K. Puram constituency by just 328 votes. That just goes to show how important voting is. —Leroy D'Souza, 21, Student I'd like to vote, though I don't know who to vote for. It is important that the right candidate gets elected but I don't think either of the three major parties – INC, BJP or AAP are worth voting for. Besides, it's been a year that I applied for my Voter ID card and I still haven't received it. NOTA seems like a good option right now. —Alefiya Lucknowalla, 20, Student I will vote. We youngsters form a huge part of the country's population and we must exercise our voting right. It helps in the selection of the proper candidate. casually in college was a big deal back in school. Most of us would actually think ten times before bunking a lecture, the fear of getting caught and being taken to the principal was a major thing, but now bunking is just another word. The teachers and the entire faculty as such felt like a family and school was like home. I terribly miss the protected environment that we had in school. Being exposed to the world in college was too much to handle in the begining but now I have settled down and am loving this exposure that I get. Yet, friendships remain the most integral part of school life. The friends that I have made, I wish to stay in touch with for the rest of my life. Even on the last day of

school while we wrote in each others’ diaries, we wrote from our heart and not just for the sake of it. All the fun, all the memories are going to be cherished for the rest of my life. Having spent fourteen years of my life with those people means a geat deal to me. Over a zillion memories in my head, of good times and bad, fun times and sad, even teasing and being teased are like a box of chocolates, once opened, you cant stop cherishing, nothing in the world would I give up all these memories for, even priceless would be an understatement. Just to sum it all up, school days are the best days of one’s life, so one must make the most of them.

My friends and I even considerd ourselves to be detectives and went around the school ground searching for strange things. It all seems so childish now, but that is how life was back then. No stress, no worries, plain fun. In fourth grade, we began to be considered responsible. We were made volunteers for junior classes. Being kids ourselves, we were supposed to look after a batch of children assigned to us. Though it may not sound too interesting, it was a new experience alltogether, a bunch of children who you get to boss around, what better could one ask for? Thankfully in my school, we were just a batch of a hundred students, so the bond we shared was strong indeed. Being in an ‘Arya Samaj’ school, all of us got so used to annual days to being referred to as ‘bal satsang’ and having ‘havans’ in school every week, however weird one might find that for a school, it became a part of me, a part that I will always remember fondly. EW DELHI: A charge sheet against former Telecom Minister A. Raja and DMK leader Kanimozhi is expected to be filed soon in the 2G spectrum money laundering case being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED, according to sources, had asked for a legal vetting of the charge sheet by the Law Ministry and all procedures in this regard have been done. The money laundering case pertains to the alleged illegal routing of Rs.200 crore to DMK

2G SCAM Court order which validates application of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in cases prior to its amendment in 2009. The agency claimed to have found evidence with regard to the chan-

nelling of Rs.200 crore to Kalaignar TV through a circuitous route, and relying on the Jharkhand High Court order it has decided to slap the charge of 'criminal proceeds' by the act of money laundering against the accused, including the duo, under the PMLA, reports PTI. The High Court order, according to sources, has "made it clear and straight" for law enforcement agencies like ED to prosecute any act leading to laundering even if they were committed before June 2009 when PMLA was amended. Section 3 of PMLA states that "whosoever directly or indirectly attempts to indulge or knowingly assists or knowingly is a party or is actually involved in any process or activity connected with the proceeds of crime and projecting it as untainted property shall be guilty of offence of money laundering." This order could be cited by the agency to nail Kanimozhi, Raja and other accused. Similar probe is underway against Asif Balwa, Director of Kusegaon Fruits & Vegetables Pvt Ltd, Rajeev Agarwal and Karim Morani of Cineyug Films (Pvt) Ltd.

EW DELHI: As general elections draw closer, 'unaccounted money' may account for over one-third of total Rs 30,000 crore estimated to be spent on these polls, a study says. The estimated Rs 30,000 crore total spending -- which includes official estimates for elections as also unaccounted money spent by parties and their candidates -- is the highest ever amount utilised for any election in India. While various national and regional parties are estimated to

spend Rs 8,000-10,000 crore for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, candidates at their individual level may spend a whopping amount of Rs 10,000-13,000 crore, as per the study conducted by research thinktank CMS. These figures include both official and unaccounted expenses. Talking about the findings of the study, CMS Chairman N. Bhaskara Rao told PTI that the estimated spending of about Rs 30,000 crore could include nearly one-third amount as 'unaccounted money',

which are mostly being used for voter mobilisation and as 'note-forvote'. Government authorities, including the Election Commission (EC), are estimated to spend 7,000 crore Rs 8,000 crore, while media campaigns could account for Rs 6,000 crore to Rs 7,000 crore, the study said. The nine-phase Lok Sabha polls will take place between April 7 to May 12. Other expenses include nominations, poll logistics and pre-poll expenditure by parties in power as

well as money spent on government campaigns about elections. "More money will flow as the poll dates come near. We have usually seen that vote-for-note trend picks up significant pace in the last 3-4 days leading to polls," said said Rao, who has been studying political campaigns for over four decades. At about Rs 30,000 crore so far, LS 2014 poll spend per voter comes to about Rs 400 going by the 81.4 crore eligible voters expected to cast their franchise this year.

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Wednesday (April 2, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose for the ninth consecutive session. It started the new financial year on a positive note by rising marginally on Tuesday (April 01, 2014) a net 16.85 points (0.25%) and closing at the 6721 point level which incidentally is also the life time high. The market opened up with a gap at the 6729 points level. It then rose further and registered the day’s high at the 6732 points level at 9.16 a.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement until 12.15 p.m. It then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 6675 points level at 12.48 p.m. The index then bounced back into the green and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session, moved in a range of 57 points and closed above the psychologically important 6700 points level for the second consecutive session. Sentiment was mixed and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 25 were gainers, while the other 25 were losers. Substantial buying was seen in IT, consumer durables, technology and oil & gas stocks, while selling was seen in banking, realty and capital goods stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 15.30%. This change is substantial but indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 864 were gainers, 622 were losers and 64 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator has risen above the slow D line (positive and a buy signal). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line but both lines are converging (negative if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is increasing in strength.

Suppor t Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 6446 points level. The next support is at the 6338 points level. Resis tance Levels : The immediate main resistance is at the 6753 points level. The next resistance is at the 6809 points level.

P ivot Point Analys is: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6710 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6687. Support (2) = 6653. Resistance (1) = 6744. Resistance (2) = 6766.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a small black body candle with a long lower tail. MIs for housing and car loans are likely to remain unchanged after the Reserve Bank today maintained the status quo on the key policy rate (repo), as was widely expected, and said there are risks to inflation. The RBI, in its first bi-monthly monetary policy statement, left the short-term lending rate, or repo rate, unchanged at 8 per cent and the cash reserve ratio static at 4 per cent. It halved the overnight call money rate to 0.25 per cent and increased the 7-day and 14-day repo limits to 0.75 per cent from 0.50 per cent. "At the current juncture, it is appropriate to hold the policy rate,

while allowing the rate increases undertaken during September 2013-January 2014 to work their way through the economy," said RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan. For the first time since taking over in September, Rajan did not surprise the markets and kept rates unchanged, as predicted by most analysts. "Excluding food and fuel...Retail inflation remained sticky around 8 per cent. This suggests that some demand pressures are still at play," the Governor said. If inflation continues along the glide path of reaching 8 per cent by January 2015 and 6 per cent by the year after, the Governor promised there won't be any rate hikes. According to bankers, interest rates

are likely to remain unchanged and there will be no immediate impact on EMIs. "Interest rates are likely to stay where they are now for some time. Life would be as usual for some time to come," Punjab National Bank Chairman and Managing Director K R Kamath said. The RBI pegged 2014-15 GDP growth at a central estimate of 5.5 per cent. It said the FY14 current account deficit would be about 2 per cent of GDP. To rein in inflation, Rajan raised the repo rate three times since September by 0.25 per cent each for a total of 75 basis points. In the previous policy review in January, the RBI increased the key rate by 0.25 per cent to 8 per cent.

Mixed Response From Experts "The Reserve Bank maintained status quo on key policy rates in its first bi-monthly monetary policy announcement. FICCI feels tweaking policy rates downwards would help lift business sentiments...Industrial growth remains sluggish. The improvement in January IIP numbers is meager and there are no clear signs of growth bottoming out. Going ahead, it will be vital to strengthen the sync between government actions and RBI policy. We feel relying primarily on monetary policy for inflation management may not be a comprehensive approach. There are administrative fixes and fiscal measures that need to be adopted. This is all the more important because the inflation problem that confronts us is largely the result of supply side factors. Also, there has been an evident shift towards consumptive expenditure from investment expenditure and we need to amend this on a priority basis" Sidharth Birla, President, FICCI “I believe that the policy is a step in the right direction and would help create favorable conditions for the Indian economy going forward.” Rana Kapoor, President, ASSOCHAM

By A Business Reporter oosting economic growth in India requires immediate introduction of Goods and Services Tax, containing subsidies, monetary easing and fast-tracking of stalled projects, CII said yesterday. In its 100-day action agenda for the new government, the industry body said a strong inter-ministerial coordination group is required to resolve sticky issues like the "mining conundrum" and "raw material securitisation" for sectors like steel. "Economic growth and investments have stagnated. We require rapid economic growth for job creation. We will share the agenda with the new government and discuss each point with them. Implementation of GST will boost GDP by 1.5-2

No surprise and no change in EMIs likely as interest rates kept on hold Rajan said lead indicators do not point to any sustained revival in industry and services as yet and the outlook for the agricultural sector is contingent on the timely arrival and spread of the monsoon. "Easing of domestic supply bottlenecks and progress on the implementation of stalled projects already cleared should brighten up the growth outlook, as would stronger anticipated export growth as the world economy picks up," he said. Rajan said the primary objective is to improve the transmission of policy impulses across the interest spectrum and improve liquidity in the system. "The term repo has evolved as a useful indicator of underlying liquidity conditions. It also

As expected, the RBI kept the repo rate unchanged in its monetary policy review. While the RBI has not sounded hawkish, indicating that the policy rates would not be increased if the inflation continues to moderate, it has not clearly pointed to a clear pause in its rate tightening cycle. As highlighted by the RBI, upside risks to inflation strongly persists both from demand and supply side which might keep the interest rates elevated for a longer than expected time-frame. A prolonged rate hike cycle would not only impact the credit growth it would also potentially increase the risks from the external sector by attracting the volatile FII inflows. Dr. Arun Singh, Sr. Economist, D&B India

We welcome the RBI’s move to keep the repo rate and the CRR on hold though a slash in the repo rate by atleast 25 bps would have brought in some positive momentum to the economy and added to the current market cheer. While the RBI seems to be veering towards targeting consumer price inflation as its dominant guidepost, I believe this may result in a prolonged period of high rates this calendar without any real dampening of inflationary pressures. That’s because core consumer price inflation does not respond well to monetary measures. In such a situation, growth and investments could be casualties Given the current policy stance of the RBI, in an already fragile environment. CARE’s expectation is that RBI will continue Yogesh Agarwal, MD, Ballarpur Industries with its inflation focus. However, RBI may not revert to a tight monetary policy as long as inThe All India Association of Industries (AIAI) flation remains in the current range. Howwelcomes the first Monetary Policy an- ever, if a possible El Nino leads to adverse nounced by Dr. Raghuram Rajan. The con- effects on output and prices, then the RBI cept paper released by the RBI on Trade would most definitely increase rates. AssumReceivables and Credit Exchange for the ing a normal monsoon, CARE’s view is that micro, small and medium enterprises there would be a cut in interest rates, in the (MSMEs) envisages a credit exchange for second half of the year – with the likelihood both primary and secondary market seg- increasing in Q4 as the RBI has spoken of an ments and aims to help the MSME sector on immediate target of CPI inflation of 8% in delayed payments and dependency on their January 2015. per cent," CII's new President Ajay Shriram told reporters here. He said India can achieve GDP growth rate of over 6 per cent, provided systemic reforms are carried out quickly by the new government. A strong economic revival package and right implementation of policies by the new government can help create as many as 150 million jobs in the next 10 years, he said. "Industry is looking for top policy steps such as the introduction of GST, easing of interest rates by 100 bps, keeping subsidies at 1.7 per cent of GDP and restructuring of labour laws to promote mass manufacturing," Shriram said, adding that a market-friendly environment is required to promote investments, business and entrepreneurship.

allows market participants to hold liquidity for a longer period...Evolving market-based benchmarks for pricing various financial products," he said. The RBI will continue to monitor liquidity conditions and ensure adequate flow of credit to the productive sectors."Liquidity conditions have tightened in March, partly on account of year-end ‘window dressing’ by banks, though an extraordinary infusion of liquidity by the Reserve Bank has mitigated the tightness," he said. The Reserve Bank will propose measures to reduce such practices, he added. The second bi-monthly monetary policy statement is scheduled to be announced on June 3.

“Despite decreasing inflation and weak growth, the Governor has chosen not to lower repo rates. I would imagine he did this primarily due to the current political uncertainty and continuing residual uncertainties in the global environment. While this is prudent, one would hope that with a new government coming in shortly, interest rates would be lowered substantially to kick-start both growth and the investment cycle.” Sumant Sinha, Chairman, Renew Power We expect RBI to maintain status quo for some time to achieve these objectives as a significant drop in inflation appears unlikely in the short term. Food and vegetable prices seem to have bottomed out and we expect some uptick in those items in the coming months. Varun Goel, Head PMS, Karvy Stock Broking While the RBI has maintained status quo, it has given several reasons which can provide an upward bias to the inflation over the course of the year. Among these are, a possible el ninoeffect on food inflation, increase in minimum support prices, changes in administered prices of fuel, fertilisers, etc, and the geopolitical tensions. If some of these factors play out, interest rate reductions will likely be further delayed. Although the policy rates are unlikely to come down in current fiscal, we are hopeful that the need for raising rates wouldn’t arise as well. Dipen Shah, Kotak Securities

ADC IMPACT A Book Lover Speaks... I have often quoted an interview I gave to a Mumbai-based newspaper, Afternoon Despatch and Courier, in which the paper would ask the interviewee 20 standard questions and on that basis publish an extremely interesting and lively write-up. IRPUR: Defending champions West Indies pummelled a listless Pakistan by 84 runs to set up the ICC World Twenty20 clash against Sri Lanka. Dwayne Bravo (46) and skipper Darren Sammy (42 not out) pulverised a decent looking bowling in the final three overs as West Indies put up an impressive 166 for six and then shot out the opposition for a meagre 85 in 17.5 overs. It was the biggest win for the Caribbean side in the Twenty20 format. Leg-spinner Samuel Badree (3/10 in 4 overs) showed why he is so highly-rated as he decimated the Pakistan top-order with a controlled effort, mixing the skidders with his googlies. Sunil Narine (3/16) was too good for the middle and lower order as none of the top-eight crossed 20. Pakistan lost the momentum in the last three overs when Sammy and Bravo took 59 runs. After this, West Indies fielders led by the colourful Chris Gayle also created relentless pressure on the Pakistan batsmen. While chasing, Pakistan got off to a worst possible start when left-arm seamer Krishmar Santokie bowled a brilliant bowl first up. It was a sharp inswinging delivery to Ahmed Shehzad (0) which hit him right on the toe of his front-foot and umpire Ian Gould adjudged him leg before. Badree made it two-down in the

very next over when Shehzad’s opening partner Kamran Akmal (0) didn’t reach to the pitch of the delivery as he didn’t get the elevation and Bravo got a simple catch at mid-off. The match was as good as over when Umar Akmal (1) was fooled by

Badree’s googly as Ramdin complete the stumping. It was 9/3 and Pakistan were down in the dumps. It only got worse when Shoaib Malik (2) stepped out only to miss a Badree delivery and Ramdin got his second stumping of the night. At the end of Powerplay, Pakistan were

out of the match with the scoreboard reading 13 for four. Brief Scores: West Indies 166 for six in 20 overs (Dwayne Bravo 46, Lendl Simmons 31, Darren Sammy 42 n.o). Pakistan 82 all out in 17.5 overs. (Mohammed Hafeez 19, Shahid Afridi 18; Samuel Badree 3/10, Sunil Narine 3/16).

Proteas devising plans to counter Indian spinners: J P Duminy

MIRPUR: Wary of India's "exceptional" spinners, South Africa are paying a lot of attention in devising a good gameplan against the spin duo of Amit Mishra and R Ashwin ahead of the semifinal clash of the ICC World Twenty20. South African batsman JP Duminy said performing well against the Indian spinners will be a "big challenge". "Their spinners have bowled exceptionally well. We want to put up a big performance against their spinners. It is a big game. It’s the semi-final of a World Cup and it doesn’t get bigger than this," Duminy said after a team net session at the BCB Academy nets here. Duminy, who scored 39 against Sri Lanka and 86 against New Zealand, has the experience of playing alongside Mishra in the IPL side Sunrisers Hyderabad. The left-hander said having faced Mishra will certainly help but the job at hand remains tough. "It's not only me who has played against him (Mishra) but some of the other guys have also played against him. You kind of know what to expect from Mishra. He has been on top form for India in this tournament and definitely, we are not going to take him lightly. We will certainly do our homework and see to it that our gameplan is in order," he said. Apart from Duminy, stand-in captain AB de Villiers has also been in good nick but Duminy feels that semi-final will be a new day. "We have been successful in the last few games but that does not necessarily mean that we will be successful again. We know that their spinners will be key components to their team." While conceding that India’s familiarity with Mirpur will be an advantage of sorts for Mahendra Singh Dhoni and co., the soon tobe 30 Duminy does not think it will have a lot of bearing in the end result.

Runs for Sehwag, Gambhir as Delhi beat Himachal M

OHALI: Out-of-favour India openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir found some form going their way as Delhi got the better of Himachal Pradesh by six wickets in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 match for North Zone here. Sehwag smashed 42 off 32 balls, while the left-handed captain Gambhir made a 40-ball 41, helping Delhi complete the chase of 134 with 10 deliveries to spare at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium. Sehwag hit five fours and a six, and Gambhir found the fence six times, the knocks doing their confidence a world of good. Chas-

ing a modest target, Delhi were off to a flier as both Sehwag and Gambhir tore apart the Himachal bowling attack with consummate ease. With their two experienced campaigners looking in good touch from the word go, the target proved to be too small for Delhi and barring left-arm spinner Bipul Sharma (2/28), none of the Himachal bowlers could pose any sort of challenge whatsoever. The two put on 82 runs for the opening wicket in 11.1 overs before Sehwag was sent back by Gurvinder Singh. Gambhir followed 13 runs later, falling to Aksahy

Chauhan to leave Delhi at 95 for two. Unmukt Chand and Mithun Manhas fell in quick succession, leaving it on Rajat Bhatia (13) and Milind Kumar (22) to complete the task. Earlier, Delhi had won the toss and opted to bowl, a decision that seemed to have paid as Himachal were struggling at 10 for two in the second over itself. After being reduced to 41 for three at one stage, skipper Paras Dogra (40 not out off 41 balls) steadied the ship and, in the company of Nikhil Gangta (29) took Himachal to a modest total. against their formidable opponents.
