Children asked to sweep schools and classrooms; Cleanliness drive to end on October 31 By Yatin Ingle

S

chool students may not get to enjoy their holiday on Gandhi Jayanthi this year, as the state government has decided that they would be better off coming to school and undertaking some cleaning work under the Swaccha Bharat, Swaccha Vidhyalaya (Clean Bharat, Clean School) drive, which officially ends on October 31. The central and state governments had earlier passed a resolution for schools to participate in the cleaning campaign from September 25 to October 31, which falls

under the Nirmal Bharat Scheme. Uday Nare, senior teacher of Hansraj Morarji Public School, opines, “October 2 has always been a holiday for school students. Besides, the time period allotted for the drive is is from September 25 to October 31. There is no specific reason for the state government to ask schools to run the drive on October 2.” Schools are afraid that even if they have managed to clean up their surroundings within the stipulated period of the drive, students and teachers will still be forced to come on October 2.

The ADC spoke to Kapil Patil, Member of the Legislative Council from the Teachers' Constituency, who said, “October 2 is the day we celebrate the life of a great freedom fighter. This is a traditional holiday in our country in remembrance of the Mahatma. The government should not sidetrack the importance of the day, the person and his sacrifice for the nation.” Ashwini Bhide, director of school education, said, “The department will discuss this issue and make a decision as soon as possible.” yatin.ingle@afternoondc.in

RESEARCHERS at University of Queensland in Australia are developing a camera that can do something pretty unique: it can see cancer. The idea came after the scientists discovered that mantis shrimp have this incredibly useful ability. The researchers have found that mantis shrimp have compound eyes that are incredibly good at detecting polarised light, a type of light that reflects differently off of cancerous tissue and healthy tissue.

HOLLYWOOD hunk George Clooney and his wife, Lebanese-British lawyer Amal Alamuddin, made their marriage official at a civil ceremony in Venice, Italy, yesterday. The newly-weds, who enjoyed a lavish nuptials in front of celebrity guests on Saturday, travelled by boat to the city hall where they were officially married by former mayor of Rome, Walter Veltroni, who also officiated Saturday's service, reported US magazine. WHILE the city is abuzz with garbas, pujas and other Navratri celebrations, here's one man who comes all the way from Mangalore to Mumbai every year, just to drape the saree for the Devi's idol installed by the Trimurti Mitra Mandal in Vikhroli's Kannamwar Nagar II. Keshav Anna, as this man is fondly called, is an astrologer by profession. Anna, who used to stay in Vikhroli some 25 years

ago, later moved to his native place in Mangalore where he practises astrology. But he ensures that he visits this Devi every year to drape the saree for her throughout Navratri. This he does for his devotion for Durga Devi and does not charge a single penny for it. The Devi's idol is presented a new saree every day by the residents, which is draped upon the previous day's saree. Thus at the end of

Navratri, the Devi is wearing nine sarees, one upon another. The Trimurti Mitra Mandal, which was established in 1983, is in its 32nd year now. The mandal has around 150 members who do not go the conventional way when it comes to managing funds for the celebrations. They chip in money from their pockets and do not ask for any donations from the local residents.

IT may be all vegetarian dishes and non-alcoholic drinks when President Barack Obama hosts a private dinner at the White House on Monday night for Prime Minister Narendra Modi who himself will take only lime water. According to sources, the Indian side had expressed a desire not to include non-vegetarian dishes during the private dinner keeping in mind sensitivities of the Prime Minister who is observing Navratri fasts. The request is being considered positively, as per US government sources. Modi, 64, who arrived in the US on Friday has been observing Navratra fasts which started on September 25, and has been only taking lukewarm lime water. Last week, the White House had said they respectfully accommodate the practices of visiting guests. "As with all guests hosted by US Presidents over the years, we always work to respectfully accommodate the practices of our visitors," said Caitlin Hayden, spokesperson of the National Security Council. Navratri is being celebrated this year from September 25 to October 3. Modi has been keeping the fast for many years during Navratri. Obama and Modi are meeting for the first time over the dinner and will hold bilateral talks on Tuesday at the White House.

empers ran high at the election office in Mira Road on Monday afternoon, when returning officer Sanjay Katkar, rejected nomination papers of 18 out of the 27 candidates during the scrutiny process for the Mira-Bhayandar Assembly segment (number 145). Around 27 candidates had filed their nominations for this Assembly segment. While candidates representing all five major political parties – Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Congress, Shiv Sena, Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) – successfully passed the scrutiny check, the nomination papers of Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) candidate Haider Shaikh along with other independent aspirants were rejected. Interestingly, most of the disqualifications were because of incomplete details and failure in subscribing or affirming an oath which is mandatory under article 84 (a) and 173 (a) of the Constitution of India and under section 36 (2) of the Representation of the People’s Act, 1951. The final list of accepted nominations include Gilbert Mendonca (NCP), Narendra Mehta (BJP), Yakub Qureshi (Congress), Prabhakar Mhatre (Shiv Sena), Islam Shaikh (BSP), Rajan Bhosale (PWP) and three independents – Rajiv Doshi, Azad Patel and Shivkumar Jain. With this, just nine contestants remain in fray. However, the final picture would emerge only on Wednesday (October 1) which is the last date for withdrawals.

dress some rallies. The Congress had formally kick started its campaigning on September 1 at Hutatma Chowk by offering tributes to the martyrs. Today's meeting will be the first campaigning rally for this election. Significantly, this time around the party has drawn a fascinating campaign strategy. The party which has always campaigned with Sonia and Rahul Gandhi as its mascots has CM Prithviraj Chavan as its poster boy for the Octo-

ber 15 election. As part of its new strategy, the Congress's campaign in the electronic media focuses on Chavan's clean image and appeals to voters to judge his work as the CM. If Sonia and Rahul have taken a backseat in the party's campaign, other senior leaders of the party are also missing. Throwing light on this plan of action, a party leader on condition of anonymity said, “The party has made a wise decision to campaign with Chavan's name as opponents will be-

he inability of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to field concrete candidates in 36 Assembly constituencies of Mumbai and the rejection of nomination papers of some of its candidates yesterday sparked off widespread resentment in the party. The nomination papers of at least two candidates – former Sena MLC Anant Tare who got a BJP ticket for the Kopri-Pachpakhadi Assembly constituency in Thane and Sitaram Tiwari from Chandivali Assembly constituency – were rejected due to several discrepancies. At the time of going to press, sources in the Election Commission of India (ECI) revealed that out of the 7,676 nomination papers received, 1,613 candidates were rejected and 6,063 candidates were validated. In the 10 Assembly constituencies of Mumbai city district,

epublican Party of India (RPI) national secretary Dr Rajendra Gawai clarified on Monday that though his visit with Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray was organised by some common political friends, he has not given any commitment to the Sena chief with regard to the coming Assembly polls. Gawai met Thackeray last Friday at his residence, Matoshri. Though the meeting was an informal one, it led to speculation by other political parties. “There was

The party is also projecting Chavan as a leader who did not succumb to the NCP's pressure.” Along with CM Chavan, today's meeting at Tuljapur will be addressed by state Congress president Manikrao Thakare, party's campaign committee chief Narayan Rane, election coordination committee chief Ashok Chavan, former union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, who is also the man-

pers on time accused their respective party leaderships for sloppy management. Another factor that must be considered is political parties snapping their alliances with few days left to file nomination papers. Some parties even gave tickets to rebels from other parties on September 27, the last day to file one's nomination papers, with just hours left for the deadline. Sources in the BJP say that besides the confusion in issuing of AB forms (party tickets) to the selected candidates, the party could not find candidates in constituencies like MankhurdShivaji Nagar. The party leadership, despite strong grassroots in Chembur, vacated it for the Republican Party of India (A). RPI's candidate Dipak Nikhalje yes-

ifesto committee chief, and Cooperation Minister Harshawardhan Patil. As the party is launching its campaign in the pilgrimage town in the absence of any member of the Gandhi family, all eyes of the Congress workers across the state will focus on this meeting.

terday walked out of the party and into the Sena camp along with his mentor Arjun Dangle, leaving BJP cadres red-faced, as many feel that members have thrown in the towel before the fight even has begun for Mumbai's 36 seats. Prominent among those whose nomination papers were rejected yesterday include Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ankush Kakade from Pune and Sena's Rajul Patel from Versova. 26-year-old former model committed suicide at her Lokhandwala residence in Andheri west. In what can be viewed as a very disturbing trend involving suicides by models and actors, the woman was identified as Archana Pandey. Her decomposed body was found hanging from the ceiling fan on Monday morning. The police have booked Pandey's boyfriend on the charge of abetment to suicide on Monday evening, on the basis of her suicide note. According to the Versova police officers, they received a call from a resident of the New Mhada building on the Lokhandwala back road at 10.30am about a foul stench emanating from the 12th floor. On

reaching the flat, the officers opened the door of the rented apartment with duplicate key, and found Pandey's body in the bedroom. The police found a one page suicide note resting on the bed. Arundhati Rane, Senior Police Inspector of Versova police station said that Pandey's body was sent to Cooper hospital for post mortem. "From the state of the highly decomped body, we can assume that Pandey may have committed suicide three days ago," said Rane. The police officers said that Pandey, who stayed alone in the city used to work as a finance consultant for the Mirza Production company after she quit modelling in 2009. The investigation officers said that in her suicide note she had named her boyfriend Umar Pathan Archana Pandey

uspecting an extramarital affair, a resident of Andheri (west) allegedly set his wife ablaze on Sunday morning in front of their children. The victim has sustained 35 per cent burn injuries and is fighting for life in Cooper hospital while her husband is absconding. According to the police, the victim, Rubina Shaikh, 30, lives in Ambernath Chawl in Gilbert Hill at Andheri (West) along with her husband Rashid, 35, and three children aged nine, six and three years. The incident occurred on Sunday at around 9:30 am when the couple had a tiff as Shaikh allegedly suspected his wife of having an affair with another man. The fight went out of control and in a fit of rage, Shaikh poured kerosene on Rubina and set her ablaze. “Shaikh then fled from the house.

At the time of the incident, two children aged six and three years were at home while the nine-year-old boy was at his grandparent’s home,” police said. Both the children ran out of the house and started crying. The children narrated the incident to the neighbours and they also saw smoke coming out of the house. So they rushed to help. The neighbours doused the fire and rushed Rubina to hospital. B.V. Deshmukh, police inspector at DN Nagar police station said, “Rubina has sustained 35 per cent burns and is undergoing treatment in Cooper hospital. She is unconscious and we have taken the statements of the six-year-old child who witnessed the incident.” “We have registered a case of attempt to murder and have deployed police teams to nab Sheikh,” said Deshmukh.

16-year-old girl studying in Class XI was raped by her father at various occasions for four years at their residence at Ghodbunder Road, Kasarwadavli in Thane. The girl kept quite for four years as her father (39) used to threaten her. However, on September 24, the victim's father saw her talking to a local boy and beat her badly. The frustrated girl then attempted suicide by consuming phenol. She was admitted to a hospital and at the time of her discharge, she refused to go back home. When asked why, the girl disclosed everything to her

mother. The victim's mother then approached the police and the accused was arrested. According to information provided by Senior police inspector V Suryawanshi from Kasarwdawli police station, the victim's parents have a vegetable shop. “A case has been registered under sections 376, 354, 323 of the IPC and POSCO in the Kasarwadavli police station, Thane. The accused father and the victim will be sent for a medical test soon. The accused was produced in court today and has been given police custody till October 1," Suryavanshi added.

for abandoning her at her time of need. She had written that Pathan and a woman named Sana had left her when she needed them the most. Police sources said that Pandey was earning well and did not have any financial problems, however she was suffering from depression after her brother Ashwin was arrested by the Gujarat crime branch in an international cheating scam. A month ago, Pandey had registered a case of kidnapping after her brother went missing, however she later found out that he had been arrested in a Nigerian scam of Rs 78 crore where Ashwin was found with Rs 76 lakh in his account. Pandey had been making frequent trips to Gujarat to secure Ashwin's bail but could not get him out of jail. She had requested Pathan to

help her out but he had been avoiding her lately. The officers said that they had recovered Pandey's phone in which they found that she had contacted Pathan and sent him a photo saying that this was her last photo and he would not be seeing her from now on. "Pathan had sent me a screenshot of the message and asked me to check on her but when I called her she seemed normal and told me that she would not do anything stupid. I did not visit her house because I did not find it serious enough," said Pandey's close friend whose statement was recorded by the police on Monday. Pandey's friends also told the police that she was scared that the Gujarat police would interrogate her also because of the scam and had sold off her computer fearing this. The police had earlier registered case of accidental death. However, based on the suicide note and the statements of her friends, the Versova police have booked Pathan and will arrest him after he arrives from Gujarat.

n the Sessions Court Chandrakant Patil (45) was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for abetment to suicide and three years for domestic violence, on Monday. Special judge Vrushali V Joshi convicted Patil under sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 498 A (domestic violence) of the IPC. The deceased, Sunita Chandrakant Patil (35) who was living at Versova Gaon with her husband and two kids set herself ablaze on October 3, 2012. Neighbours, who were also the witnesses in the case told the court that the accused was an alcoholic and used to regularly beat his wife. He was jobless too and used to steal the deceased's money. Sunita used to work as a housemaid. On the night of October 3, 2012 the couple had a fight which took a turn for the worse when Sunita poured kerosene on her body and set herself ablaze. The accused didn't make any effort to save her. The

neighbours took her to Cooper Hospital from where she was transferred to Navi Mumbai. But because of the lack of money it wasn't possible to go ahead with the treatment, so she was brought back home. After suffering for almost one and a half months, she died. In her dying declaration she said, “There was no money in the house. My husband doesn't earn anything. He used to drink and steal whatever I earned. I can't let my kids starve. I had no option and was fed up.” The prosecution presented two eyewitnesses in the case. One was the nine-year-old son of the deceased and the second one was a neighbour. The son of the deceased told the court that his father was watching when his mother set herself ablaze and didn't do anything to save her. Apparently, the accused also admitted in the court that he didn't do anything to save his wife. He said that he neither asked Sunita to set herself ablaze nor did he try to save her.

HC tells Centre to take appropriate decision on use of plastic flags at the earliest

he Bombay High Court on Monday directed the Union Government to strictly implement the ban on manufacture of national flags made from plastic. The Ministry of Home Affairs has been directed to take stringent measures against the use, distribution and sale of such plastic flags. The court directed the central government to take a decision by November 30 on banning national flags made of plastic so that it can be implemented before January 26, 2015.This comes as the division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Girish Kulkarni was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed last year by Hindu Janjagriti Sangh saying Maharashtra government is doing nothing despite issuing a circular on August 22, 2007 banning the use, sale and purchase of plastic flags. During the proceedings of the matter on Monday, advocate Anand Patil, the lawyer representing the NGO, told the court, “At present, there is no mechanism to dispose the paper-made or plastic flags found in scores after the Independence day or Republic Day celebrations.” The judges perused the Centre's affidavit which stated that there is no legislation banning manufacture of plastic national flags but there is a proposal to do so. The judges said even the National Flag Code of India does not contemplate use of flags made of plastic. Also, that flags made of paper can be used but they shall not be discarded or thrown on the ground. 27-year-old Mumbai-based man was on Monday arrested after being picked up from Parbhani district in Maharashtra in connection with the murder of his 52-year-old American 'girlfriend' in a Bangkok hotel in 2012, police said yesterday. Acting on a tip-off, a trap was laid and the accused, Ritesh Sanghvi, a resident of Mumbai, who changed his looks to evade arrest since the murder in February 2012, was apprehended from his hideout in Gangakhed city in Parbhani district, police said.

Sanghvi was brought to Mumbai and placed under arrest yesterday, Shalini Sharma, police inspector with Crime Branch, told PTI. According to police, 52-year-old Wendy S. Albano, an interior designer, had been found stabbed to death in 32-storey Fraser Suite Hotel in Sukhumvit Soi 11 in Bangkok on February 13, 2012. Albano's body was found lying on the bathroom floor. She was stabbed in the chest several times and there were signs of strangulation around her neck. As per the hotel records, Sanghvi was also

staying with her. Thailand police had said the woman was murdered a day before the body was found. After coordinating with the security agencies following the murder, Mumbai police began searching for the accused. Upon enquiry, accused's father Narpatraj claimed he had registered a missing person complaint on February 8, 2012 at D B Marg Police Station after his son could not be found, Sharma added. And the family too had a hope of a miracle. But after conducting the Cold Calorie test where cold water is poured into the ears of the person and response is checked for from the eyes

and the Apnea test (it provides an essential sign of definitive loss of brainstem function) when we got positive results, along with other signs of no responses and no reflexes, it was amply clear that she is brain dead, said Dr P P Ashok, Consultant and Head of Neurology at Hinduja hospital. Even during this time of grief, the daughters and son of Kavita Karkare took a noble decision that would help give others a new lease of life. They have decided to donate their mother's kidneys and liver. The Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee informed that the donated liver will be sent to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, while one kidney will be used for a patient at Hinduja hospital itself and the other will go to Jaslok hospital. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Ponder awhile... “A man may lack everything but tact and conviction and still be a forcible speaker; but without these nothing will avail... Fluency, grace, logical order and the like, are merely the decorative surface of oratory.” — Charles Horton Cooley

They say it is ‘Modi magic’ P

RIME Minister Narendra Modi has the gift of the gab. When he speaks, people listen to him as if mesmerised. He claims even the rapt attention of a sophisticated audience. During the last four days, he has been addressing rallies, business meetings and small groups in the US. His speech at Madison Square Garden was a big hit. And he is a master in his dealing with mass rallies. A conclusion has been arrived at, that there is magic in his speech. They have called it Modi magic: it is this magic that got the BJP brute majority and decimated the Congress which got only 44 seats. And in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP got 71 out of 80 seats in the recent Lok Sabha elections. It looks like this Modi magic had not disappeared. This was proved in America where Modi addressed the people. The Prime Minister is scheduled to address as many as 20 rallies in Maharashtra beginning from October 4. If it has worked elsewhere, there is no reason to think it will not work again in Maharashtra. The BJP claims the party will sweep the elections and come to power. There are other BJP leaders, too, who will be addressing public meetings across Maharashtra. They are expected to address as many as 300 rallies a few days before the polls on October 15.

Y hunch is that Gujarat’s map of India showing Arunachal Pradesh with dotted lines, suggesting a disputed territory, was at the instance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gujarat is his backyard and he can have anything done there. Even the contradiction was half-hearted and left to further 'investigation'. What Modi probably tried to convey to the visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping was that he was willing to keep Arunachal Pradesh as a disputed territory provided there was an indication by Beijing that it was willing to settle the border dispute (Line of Actual Control -LAC) keeping New Delhi’s sensibility as well as sensitivity in view. The standoff in Ladakh holds no such hope. President Xi’s response was not helpful and the incursions in the Indian territories were sustained during his entire visit. And after returning to Beijing, the Chinese President has reportedly told his top military officials that they should be ready for regional wars which he contended must be won. It was all directed towards New Delhi which, for reasons best known to it, did not say a word to register its annoyance. It was a stance which the subject nations take against their masters.

also reach out to Taiwan, Vietnam and other south Asian countries which are feeling the assertiveness of China. And Beijing should be made to realize that India has accepted China’s suzerainty over Tibet but not the demographic change or the ruthless repression in that territory. The Dalai Lama is already feeling restive and edgy. Jawaharlal Nehru warned India as back as in 1962 thus: “It is a little naïve to think that the trouble with China was essentially due to a dispute over some territory. It had deeper reasons. Two of the largest countries in Asia confronted each other over a vast border. They differed in many ways. And the test was

What surprised me was why we invited the Chinese President when Beijing has made no amends for the betrayal in 1962 when it attacked unprepared India. Nor has it vacated the territory which it forcibly captured since then. The Ministry of External Affairs should have tested the waters before Xi’s visit. The various steps China has taken since, from the stapling of visa on passport to amassing PLA soldiers in Gilgit-Baltistan, should make things clear for New Delhi — a plethora of irritations. However, it would be naïve to play into the hands of China as India did in 1962. A sense of growing strength has given Beijing a measure of superiority. It is crudely exhibiting it, particularly when India looks disorderly and divided. More disconcerting for New Delhi is that Beijing is an emerging power in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Nepal, the countries surrounding India. New Delhi should

as to whether anyone of them would have a more dominating position than the other on the border and in Asia itself.” I mean no disrespect to the Chinese President. But his visit was doomed to be a failure. Investment is at best a palliative to the hurt caused on the border. I have not been able to understand, much less appreciate, the purpose of the visit from our point of view. In fact, China’s incursions in Ladakh when the President and Prime Minister were talking in Delhi, underlined the intractable stance on the border. That China would invest $20 billion (the initial figure was $100 billion) in India suits Beijing because it wants to increase trade with New Delhi which offers a vast market and other opportunities. But what about the basic requirement: Trust? Nehru introduced Chinese leader Zhou Enlai to the world. He looked up to Nehru but

UST as for every illness there is a remedy, so for every disaster there is a reconstruction. Any effort, in whatever form and however small, made towards reconstruction or towards the betterment of conditions is worthwhile, but what we need most is the understanding of that religion of religions and that philosophy of philosophies which is selfknowledge. We shall not understand the outer life if we do not understand ourselves. It is the knowledge of the self that gives the knowledge of the world. What is health? Health is order. And what is order? Order is music. Where there is rhythm, regularity, cooperation, there is harmony, there is sympathy. Health of mind and health of body therefore depend upon preserving that harmony, upon keeping intact that sympathy, which is going on in the mind and in body. Remember that life in the world, and especially if lived amidst the crowd, will test and try our patience every moment of the day, and it will be most difficult to preserve that

harmony and peace which are all happiness. What is the definition of life? Life means struggle with friends and battle with foes. It is all the time giving and taking, and it is most difficult to keep the sympathy, to keep the harmony, which are health and happiness. Where are we to learn it? All education, learning and knowledge are acquired, but

MATTER & SPIRIT this one art is a divine art and man has inherited it. Absorbed in outer learning he has forgotten it, yet it is an art which is known to his soul, yet it is his own being, it is the deepest knowledge of his heart. No progress in whatever line will give a man that satisfaction his soul is craving for, except this art which is the art of life, the art of being, which is the pursuit of his soul. In order to serve the reconstruction of the world the only thing possible and the only thing necessary is to learn the art of being, the art of life, for oneself and

that was till he got known in the international arena. Zhou Enlai betrayed Nehru when China took advantage of our trust — and unpreparedness.

Jawaharlal Nehru-Zhou Enlai I do not think that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would ever have as much equation with the Chinese President as Nehru had with Zhou Enlai. Still, the latter carried out the task he had in mind, capturing in Ladakh the area which China claimed to be its own. In fact, the incursions in our territory that took place during the talks between Modi and Jinping underlined that China does not want to accommodate India on the border issue. I do not find the determination at the highest level. There is a lot of wishful thinking. What purpose does it serve in discussing whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi had the better of China or President Jinping on the border issue when the reality of our society is caste and class? The Dalits are still treated as untouchable as our forefathers did. Today’s youth is indifferent to everything else but not to the feeling of superiority which he seems to feel is his birthright. Eleven children, all cousins belonging to a Dalit family, were ousted from a government primary school in a village in Bikaner, Rajasthan, after two of them drank water from a pot meant for an upper caste teacher. He reportedly humiliated the two students and even beat them up. True, the teacher, Mangal Singh, was arrested after the family lodged a police complaint. But society on the whole remains unreceptive. Prime Minister Modi talks about development. What kind of development does he have in mind where caste bias is sustained? To some extent, class and caste seem to coincide. Coming back to the disputed part of IndiaChina border, the matter has got more complicated after the visit of President Xi Jinping. For example, the Chinese troops which entered the Indian territory not only stayed there but also increased their strength. They have reportedly now withdrawn from the place. But Beijing has made it loud and clear that India should stay away from the disputed territory. to be an example oneself before trying to serve humanity. What is Sufism? It is that art which has just been spoken of, the art through which the music and symphony of life can be preserved, and through which man can enable himself to become the proper servant of God and humanity. Health is an orderly condition caused by the regular working of the mechanism of the physical body. The regular working of the physical body depends upon the weather, diet, the balance between action and repose, and the condition of the mind. Many think that it is some deformity of the body, a curve in the spine or cavity in the brain that affects the mind. Few realize that very often the mind produces an irregularity in the spine or in the brain, thereby causing an illness. The ordinary point of view regards an illness as a physical disorder, which can be cured by means of material remedies. Then there is another point of view: that of people who think deeply and who say that by not taking notice of an illness, or by suggesting to oneself that one is well, one can be restored to health. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

Rockstar response to Modi OUR Prime Minister has, unquestionably, a rare gift of the gab and enjoys giving speeches in Hindi tirelessly and this has seen him successfully through the Lok Sabha elections. However, one still wonders why he should choose Hindi to address an international audience at the UN General Assembly – most of those who were present would not have been able to follow what he said and the emphasis is clearly lost in such cases. He holds a Masters degree in Political Science like Atalji and so should be able to address in English without any detriment to his love and loyalty to Hindi. That will give him a lot of quiet dignity that goes with the language and enhance his reach phenomenally. — Dr V Subramanyan, Thane

PM Modi rocked Madison square like never before as we saw 20,000 Indians on their feet absolutely jubilant and tearful. It would take days to recover from Modi's motivating and inspiring speeches and the fantastic response that he received. What a political rockstar! So glad I voted for him. India is in safe hands. Never said this before to anyone but I wish this man lives very very long.

Gujarat has taught the world that hard work is the stepping stone to success and there is no substitute to honesty and principles. What separates Modi from the rest is his simplicity and down-to-earth approach, his vision and outlook apart from his belief to achieve his goals and dreams. Modi's politics is simple. This has reference to your article 'US court issues summons against Modi' (ADC, Sept 27). I realise that the media's function is to 'make news', but there is no need to go overboard. Take this frivolous lawsuit filed against PM Modi in a New York court, pertaining to the old chestnut of the Godhra riots. The electronic media has gone to town on this non-issue, to the extent of holding lengthy debates where the nowadays omnipresent Subramanium Swamy can be relied to put in his two cents worth at the slightest provocation. This case has nothing more than nuisance value. The PM enjoys full diplomatic immunity and cannot be prosecuted. Moreover, since the principal defendant cannot be compelled to appear in court, there is in effect no case. Code of Conduct I eloquently endorse the statement made by actorturned-politician Shatrughan Sinha in various newspapers regarding the Shatrughan Sinha implementation of the Code of conduct for the newly elected celebrities from Bollywood and Sports viz Hema Malini, Vinod Khanna, Kiron Kher, Dharmendra, Rekha and cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar. In this context, I wish to state that it has only been the earlier MPs viz: Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bachchan, Jaya Prada who have all been particular in attending the parliament session. But sadly the newly elected politicians are showing no regard to the code of conduct of Parliament. Rekha, Hema Malini, Vinod Khanna, Kiron Kher and Sachin Tendulkar have not been attending Parliament sessions regularly and give excuses of shoots, brand endorsements and other reasons. THE special court's judgment sentencing then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa as well as her aides and relatives for disproportionate assents is a landmark verdict, especially in a country where corruption has practically come to be a way of life. Jayalalithaa is the first sitting chief minister to be convicted, and this itself is a signal that power cannot protect forever. Despite various measures to counter corruption, no body believes that it can be wiped out and some feel that it should start with the man on the ground, while other thinks that it has to be tackled from the top. It is infuriating for us as tax payers, to see government officials and employees, already paid to do their jobs, expecting and demanding additional under-the-table payment. The alternative for us is an endless wait and repeated trips to the office in question. It is to avoid such frustration that those of us who pay bribes, do so. Jayalalithaa's case, of course, is an example of money-gathering at the highest level and in huge amounts. The few hundreds that the average, citizens see crossing palms can't hold a candle to the Rs 66 crore in this case. But it is still a case of ill-gotten gains, and still sends out a clear message that no one is above the law. However, the case dragged on for 18 years, and this is a bit of a dampener. The chief obstacle for petitioners is that cases take inordinately long to be settled, and

THE great news of the year so far, is the ruling CM of TN J Jayalalithaa was found guilty in the

DA case worth Rs 66 crore. She is jailed for four years and fined not less than a hundred crore of rupees. Her associate Shashikala too was similarly found guilty and jailed for four years. Above all, Jayalalithaa stands disqualified and cannot find a place in the political arena for 10 long years. For starters, it would be four years imprisonment and barred from standing in elections for 10 years. She's the first CM to be punished so severely. Let's hope that this is a verdict for which no appeal would be allowed. This DA case took 18 long years. So how many years (nay decades) will it take if cases have to be filed and guilty ministers and politicians and bureaucrats and others to be punished for several scams worth crores of rupees during the Congress rule in the last 10 years? And what will happen to Jaya amma? Will she be behind bars for full four years? I doubt. Recollect what happened very recently to Lalu Yadav in the Fodder scam? He was found guilty, was in jail for a couple of months or so and now roaming free. What happened to Madhu Koda, Raja, Kanimozhi? They were all jailed no doubt but spent a few months behind bars only to come out as 'martyrs'. — S Krishna Kumar, Dombivali

EW YORK: The "highprofile" public reception that Narendra Modi received before a packed Madison Square Garden appeared prominently in American media, which so far had given scant coverage to the Prime Minister's US visit. The maiden US visit of Modi as Prime Minister was hardly taken note of by mainstream American media so far, till he addressed nearly 20,000 people of the Indian community at the event in Madison Square Garden in New York on Sunday. "Madison Square Garden thundered with applause as thousands rose to their feet and chanted the name of an unlikely celebrity: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi," The Wall Street Journal reported. When it comes to allergies, there’s not too much you can do to prevent or cure them, so the best thing to do is to learn how to live with them. ust because you can’t prevent an allergy, doesn’t mean that you have to go sniffling around the place with a box of tissues and anti-allergy cream in tow. From allergy-proofing your home and finding natural remedies, to learning how to avoid allergens, there is a lot you can do to make dealing with allergies easier and more effective. In this article, we’re going to tell you about the precautions that you can take and tips you can use to deal with allergies on a daily basis.

Prevent the reaction Follow these tips to keep the sneezing and rashes away.

clean your nose You’d be surprised to find that pollen, which is one of the most common allergens, sticks to the skin and hair follicles in and around your nose. This means that you will suffer from allergic reactions even when there are no allergens in the air around you. You can use a sinus rinse, or nasal sprays that are available at medical stores to keep your nose pollen-free.

Wash your hair

be dusting your house. Dust particles take 1-2 hours to settle down and this period can cause an allergic reaction. So, either hire household help, or buy a vacuum cleaner, which cleans your house without disturbing the dust particles too much.

allerGy-Proof your home You can’t do much about the air pollution or the pollen in a garden, but you can ensure that yours is an allergy-free home by using these tips: n Bedroom: Dust mites are one of the most common allergens in your bed. To prevent an allergic reaction, make sure that you wash all your linen once a week. Washing linen with hot water is one of the best ways to kill all the dust mites. You can also pick organic (check for certification) bed linen, as it is better at keeping mites away. n Living room: You might love carpets and fur sofas, but if you are allergic to dust, you should avoid using them. Think about switching to sofas that are made of leather, wood or plastic instead of fabric. Also remember that just like fabric sofas, carpets too trap Continued to pg 14 «

If you use a lot of hair products (such as gels and mousse), you should wash your hair before you go to sleep. The sticky nature of these products causes pollen and dust to stick to your hair, leading to allergic reactions.

use antihistamine Antihistamines are drugs that are used to fight allergy symptoms. While we are against self-medication, it is a good idea to store a leaf of over-the-counter antihistamine tablets to provide quick relief from allergy symptoms when you’re at work or travelling and need immediate relief. But, make sure to check with your doctor about the side effects.

Ensure that newspapers and books are not left out in the open, as they will begin to collect dirt after a while. n Bathroom: The humidity in your bathroom will give rise to mould — another allergen. Also, wash your bathtub, washbasin, water taps and shower heads once a week with hot water. Remember to dry them properly afterward! n Kitchen: When it comes to your kitchen, you need to worry about pests such as cockroaches and mice, as their droppings can cause an allergic reaction. iNside out It may seem banal, but do put in a little time and effort to understand your allergy. Learn what triggers it, what symptoms show up and how quickly they immobilise you. Speak to your doctor and draw up an action plan to deal with an attack. Find out what medication will help bring the situation under control. Apart from speaking with your general physician, you can also consult an allergist, who deals only with allergyrelated problems and will be able to help

do your researcH Before you dig into your favourite salad or appetiser, spend some time researching restaurants. Identify those that are open to modifying dishes for people with allergies, or ones that have a good reputation. Certain experts recommend eating at popular restaurant chains as they have policies in place when it comes to food allergies. They also have a standardised set of ingredients and processes that are used to make the recipe, so that you can immediately scan them to identify whether or not it is safe for you.

call aHead If you cannot confirm whether a specific restaurant is ready to cater to someone suffering from food allergies, call them in advance. Speak to the manager or a chef and discuss your requirements. If you, or your children suffer from severe allergies, it may be a good idea to discuss the menu in advance, so that there are no unpleasant surprises once you reach the restaurant.

eat early If you suffer from severe food allergies, avoid visiting restaurants during peak hours. When you visit them before peak hour rush, the chance of mix-ups and contamination are significantly lower. You will find that servers are more attentive and as everything is more orderly in the kitchen, the chances of a goof-up are minimal.

Home remedies for allergies Don’t run to the doctor every time you suffer from a mild allergy. Try these home remedies first.

Neti pots These teapot-like contraptions (see bottom right) are considered to be extremely effective to treat a stuffy nose (they are great for those suffering from dust allergies). Simply fill the neti pot with warm, distilled water and salt, pour it into one nostril and let it pour our of the other. Then, repeat the process with the other nostril.

Hot sHowers If you suffer from allergies that are triggered by weather change, pollen, insects or dust, taking a hot shower will clear your nasal passage, and prevent the allergies from spreading further.

tea Not only is a cup of tea comforting, it also helps clear congestion in your throat and nose. Green tea also has several compounds that help alleviate common allergy symptoms. However, refrain from drinking chamomile tea — it may calm you, but will actually aggravate your allergies, especially if you are allergic to ragweed (see box).

reactions. Although the reaction varies from person to person, here are the most common plants and tips on how to identify them. n ragweed: These squiggly, thin-stemmed plants are found in abundance in rural areas, fields, roads and river banks during summer and autumn and can aggravate your condition if you suffer from asthma. n mountain cedar: As the name suggests, these lush, green trees are found in hilly areas during spring and can be fatal to those who suffer from pollen or plant allergies. n ryegrass: Found abundantly in the countryside, the plant resembles a wheat crop with fluffy, cotton-like bits at the tip of the plant. Ryegrass spells doom for those who suffer from pollen allergies and can also trigger mould allergies. n maple: These shady trees are gorgeous, but are potent threats for those suffering from plant allergies. Fortunately, not too many areas boast of this tree in India. n mulberries: Found in the hilly regions of India, these tart-sweet berries come from a plant that can cause and aggravate hay fever. >> Neti pots work like nasal drips to relieve a stuffy nose

allergy mistakes Sometimes, your own habits might be the reason that you are constantly troubled by allergic reactions. Make sure you’re not committing the following mistakes: n Leaving your windows open: You might think you are airing your home, but during spring and winter, when the air is heavy with pollen, this will lead to the accumulation of pollen in your home. So, keep the windows closed and crank up the AC, which acts as an air-filter. n Wrong place, wrong time: Exercising is great, but if you suffer from allergies, rethink when and where you exercise. Avoid walking or jogging in gardens or on roads that are surrounded by several trees. Similarly, avoid exercising early in the morning, as that is when plants and trees release pollen. Also, choose spaces that are free from traffic to ensure that the air isn’t filled with dust particles.

n Unclean AC: Air-conditioning can help clean the air entering your room. But, if you haven’t cleaned the air-filter recently, do so at the earliest. Unclean air filters can lead to dust in your room, which will

lead to an allergic reaction. n Too much clutter: From a stack of newspapers in a corner to your children’s favourite soft toys stored in a pile, clutter in your home collects dust. Keep your house neat and clean and store dust collecting items such as soft toys and fabric-based household items in closets. n ‘Allergy-free’ pets: The reason we put allergy-free in quote marks is because no matter what the internet will have you believe, there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic pet — pets that don’t cause allergic reaction. Even hairless dogs or cats can cause an allergic fit, as it is not the hair that irritates your system, but skin particles called dander and proteins that are found in their saliva and urine. So, if you’re allergic, you’re going to have to say goodbye to your dreams of having a pet.

With the BMC turning up its nose against this flavouring agent, Shirley Mistry tells you everything that you need to know about MSG

M

onosodium glutamate (MSG), is a naturally occurring amino acid that is used as a flavour enhancer. Popularly known as Ajinomoto (which is actually a brand name), MSG is most often used in Chinese cuisine, to amp-up the flavours of the food. However, for several years now, the spice has built a questionable reputation for itself, with several health conditions being linked to the continued consumption of MSG. We spoke to well-known nutritionist, Suman Agarwal, about whether MSG is as harmful as it is claimed to be, and she told us that MSG has been granted a GRAS (Generally Recognised As Safe) status by the Food and Drug Administration wing of the United States of America. “Several studies have been conducted to find the negative health implications of MSG, but these studies have not conclusively established that it is harmful,” she tells us. However, several people have reported certain immediate medical problems after consuming MSG. This has led to the belief that the ingredient has harmful effects. “Some people are sensitive to MSG and may show symptoms such as headaches, nausea and chest pain after consuming MSG,” she adds. Some experts do believe that regularly consuming MSG can cause brain damage, depression and autism, especially in children. “Although the FDA considers it to be a safe ingredient, experts are of the opinion that it is an excitotoxin — it overexcites your brain cells, can cause varying degrees of brain damage and can even cause, or worsen conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease,” Suman adds. If you do experience any of these side effects, it is wise to steer clear of MSG and ask for your food to be prepared without it when you are dining at a restaurant. She explains, “There are some foods that can create the same umami flavour (the fifth taste apart from sweet, sour, salty and bitter) such as mushrooms, celery, tomato, seaweed, asparagus and red wine. Herbs such as turmeric, cumin and rosemary are also good alternatives to MSG. Apart from these herbs, cooking techniques such as fermentation and curing can also enhance the flavour of your meal, without the use of MSG.”

Foods that contain MsG If you wish to stay away from MSG, even though the World Health Organisation considers it to be a safe ingredient, you may want to stay away from other foods that contain it. Avoid canned vegetables and soups, wafers, bottled salad dressings, canned meats, Chinese gravy dishes and processed, salty snacks.

2. answeR: B. false Just because cancer has begun to gain prominence in recent times, it doesn’t mean that it is a new-age disease. In fact, Egyptian and Greek physicians have described conditions with symptoms similar to those of cancer in texts that date back to thousands of years. Researchers have also come across a 3,000-year-old human skeleton that displayed signs of cancer. 3. answeR: B. false This myth originates from a belief that wearing a bra all day stresses the breast tissue and blocks blood flow, which apparently leads to the degeneration of the breast tissue and ultimately, breast cancer. However, there is no scientific research to back this claim. You must remember that bras are necessary to provide support, and while staying bra-free for a few hours can help your muscles relax, not wearing one at all can cause back pain. 4. answeR: a. tRue Lung cancer, along with the cancers of liver, stomach and breast, is the most common cause of death due to cancer. According to figures from the WHO, lung cancer alone was responsible for 1.59 million deaths of the total 8.2 million cancer death reported in 2012. Liver

cancer was at a distant second, having been the cause of 7,45,000 deaths. 5. answeR: B. false While exposure to chemicals — through air, food and water — is a cause of cancer, the leading preventable cause of cancer is tobacco use. According to the WHO, tobacco contributes to 22% of world’s cancer deaths. 6. answeR: B. false This is a myth that originates from a truth: cancer cells, just like other cells in your other body, use glucose for energy. However, it is mistakenly assumed that this means you shouldn’t eat sugar. Remember that your body can’t pick and choose which cells get energy and which ones don’t. So, if you stop eating sugar, you will be depriving your cells of the energy that they need, which will make recovering from cancer much more difficult. 7. answeR: B. false Okay, we are going to give you this one, even if you got the answer wrong. The way the question was worded, false is the correct answer. Having a family history of cancer doesn’t mean you have a 100% risk of cancer. At

8. answeR: a. tRue As long as you don’t count hair, all major body parts can suffer from cancer. The reason is a fairly simple one: cancer affects your cells, and your body is covered with cells from head to toe — literally. In fact, there is a even an extremely rare form of cancer that affects your heart. 9. answeR: B. false Scientifically? No, there is not much proof that your attitude matters when it comes to recovering from cancer. However, talk to or read about cancer survivors, and they will list positive mental attitude as an important part of their recovery. A study did shed some light on this aspect — a positive attitude means that patients do not get cut off socially, helping them manage their lives, lower stress and stay happy — all of which can help you feel a lot better. 10. answeR: B. false What we consider super foods are foods that provide a plethora of health benefits. But just because they are much healthier than your average vegetable, it doesn’t mean that eating super foods all day will prevent cancer. Following a healthy lifestyle is what can help lower your risk of cancer. At the same time, remember that even the healthiest of lifestyles won’t guarantee a 0% risk of cancer — we’re sure you’ve heard of people who haven’t smoked a cigarette in their lives getting diagnosed with lung cancer.

Varied Pull-uPs While standard pull-ups are great for an upper-body workout, these variations will take your routine to the next level, says Yamini Walia

P

ull-up variations are the best way to make your workout less monotonous and have a little fun while you build strength. From your grip, muscles and palms, to your arms and back, these variations are extremely effective at increasing your upper body strength. Read on to find out more about the different ways in which you can perform a pull-up.

>> Perfect the strict pull-up before you try other variations hands so that your palms are facing you. Grip the bar tightly and ensure that your arms are fully extended. Pull yourself up and repeat the same step at least 10 times. Then, switch your grip to your palms facing outwards and repeat.

strict pull-up Before you try any other variation, make sure that you perfect the strict pull-up. It benefits your arms, shoulders, chest and back and also helps you build smaller muscles that are necessary to support your shoulders and prevent slap tears, bicepital tears, shoulder dislocations and glenoid labrum tears. Start by grabbing the pull-up bar, with your palms facing away from your body. Now, hang from the bar and extend your arms completely. Pull yourself up as many times as your arms can handle it. Make sure you grip the bar tightly, and perfect the strict pull-up by performing it at least 10 times.

BEhiNd-thE-NEck pull-up This variation works your shoulders and puts pressure on your back. So, be extremely careful when performing this pull-up, as it can be a little difficult. A full behind-the-neck pull-up involves a larger range of motion than a standard pull-up, which is what makes it more challenging. Hang on the bar with a grip that’s wider than your shoulders. Extend your arms and pull yourself up. Bring your arms behind you, so that the bar is behind your neck. Repeat this 10-15 times.

chiN-up This is a great alternative to biceps curls and it helps tone your arms. Chin-ups put your biceps in a stronger line of pull, so they’ll typically hit your biceps a bit harder than normal pull-ups. Also, this is probably the easiest alternative to a regular pull-up. You need to start with your palms facing your body. Grip the bar tightly and hang from it with your arms fully extended, pull yourself up all the way, till your chin is above the bar. Repeat this 10-15 times.

Unlike standard pull-ups, this variation lays great emphasis on the strength of your grip. It works the muscles of your hands and forearms, which will help you strengthen what is often the weakest link in your body and help you get a great upper back workout at the same time. First, swing a towel over the pull-up bar and hold on to it like you would hold a rope. Now, pull yourself up as many times as you can, until either your grip (or your towel’s grip) gives out.

ExpErt suggEstioNs Sagar Pednekar, fitness expert and manager-of physical therapist operations at Gold’s Gym recommends the following variations: Wide grip, pronated (inward roll of palms) pull-ups: Target muscles: Latissimus dorsi (upper back). Procedure: Hang on the bar with a pronated grip that’s wider than your shoulders. Stabilise your body in such a manner that it doesn’t swing. Exhale and pull yourself upwards, while contracting your upper back muscles. Inhale and release your body slowly back to the starting position. Perform this exercise at least 10-15 times. Narrow grip, supinated (palms facing backwards) pull ups: Target muscles: Middle fibers of the trapezius muscle, latissimus dorsi (upper back) and biceps. Procedure: Hang on the bar with a supinated grip. Stabilise your body so that it doesn’t swing. Exhale and pull yourself upwards contracting your upper back muscles, (see to it that your body travels in a straight line). Your body must be perpendicular to the floor throughout. Inhale and release your body slowly back to the starting position. Perform this exercise 10-15 times.

W

>> Waist training involves wearing a tight corset that can rupture your organs

e would all love an hourglass figure, but the lengths to which some people go to achieve it, is nothing short of alarming. The latest fad is waist training, a cringe-worthy method, where you are required to wear a corset for hours at a stretch. When it’s practised for a long duration of time, the corset helps cinch your waist, suck in your sides and give you an hourglass figure. Women usually start off by wearing a corset for 2-4 hours every day, eventually working their way up to wearing it for up to a shocking 12 hours a day! Hollywood star Jessica Alba, admitted to wearing a double corset day-in-and-day-out for around three months after the birth of her two children. Waist training simply relies on the tight corset to suck in your body, not letting it breathe, therefore constricting its form. What is more excruciating, is it being described as ‘a pleasant hug’ by The Corset Diet (a company that makes corsets especially for waist training). The Corset Diet, along with

other propagators of this weight loss theory, believe that the tightness around your stomach area gives you the feeling of a full stomach, curbs cravings, reduces your appetite and so, helps you lose weight. Experts believe that this method is a lot easier and less invasive as compared to surgical body contouring, but it does come with its own set of lethal side effects. Apart from severely bruising your skin, a corset can compress your spleen, liver and kidneys and can rupture and bruise severely. It also blocks oxygen from reaching the cells in your body, which can actually result in weight gain, due to a syndrome known as metabolic syndrome. Unless you want to end up with cracked ribs and ruptured organs, waist training is a horrible idea. There are no shortcuts to weight loss. Although working out at the gym may be a more arduous, long-drawn process, you can rest assured that you won’t risk harming your body.

Kartavya Healtheon is a disease management company that provides programmes and services to help patients understand and better manage their conditions. Dev Goswami speaks to the founders to find out more

E

stablished in 2008, Kartavya (a Sanskrit word that means duty, obligation or task) Healtheon is a one-of-a-kind company that aims to make the lives of patients who suffer from chronic diseases easier, thereby ensuring that their treatments are more successful. The company has screened six lakh people throughout India for hepatitis B through their camps and community programmes. We speak to the founders, Vikram Srivastava and Anil Nayak, to find out more about their company and the services that it offers.

Tell us a little about Kartavya. Kartavya is a disease management company that caters to people with chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer and hepatitis B. We bring various groups of people such as pharmaceutical companies, physicians, pharmacists, nurses and patients together on a common platform to help provide treatment and manage diseases in a more synchronised, efficient manner. We do this by offering programmes that ensure better compliance to therapy and allow effective treatment at affordable prices. For example, we provide patients with reminders to adhere to their medical prescriptions in the form of SMS or IVRS. Similarly, we provide disease education, counselling, discount coupons for periodic health checkups, doorstep delivery of medication and basic Electronic Medical Records (EMR).

How does it work? Are you wondering how the services from Kartavya work? Vikram and Anil tell us that they inform doctors about the nature and services offered by them. The doctor then tells his/ her patients about the service and provides contact information. When a patient calls up, they get to speak to a counsellor who explains the various aspects of the disease that they are suffering from. After receiving consent, they start their service (which is free of cost for patients) which could be in the form of medicine delivery, reminders to take medicine, help with future tests and checkups and other personalised services. To find out more, you can get in touch with them through their website: www.kartavyahealtheon.com. sales. We thought of designing a program that would engage patients and use IT as its backbone to manage patients across India. It took us almost two years to arrive at a chronic disease management model. We started to understand patient behaviour (such as adhering to prescribed therapy) and began to work on various diseases management models that would help patients understand their disease better and ensure a positive outcome.

When you use the term disease management, what do you mean? he use of insulin pump therapy to fight type 1 diabetes is rapidly gaining popularity all over the world. An insulin pump is a small, mechanical device that is worn outside the body, often on a belt or in your pocket. It delivers fast-acting insulin to your body through an infusion set, which is a thin, plastic tube that ends in a small, flexible plastic cannula, or a very thin needle. It is so comfortable to wear, that you often don’t even feel it on you. Dr. Piya Ballani Thakkar, endocrinologist at Bombay Hospital explains, “Conventional therapy, which uses several daily injections, is considered impractical for children under the age of 12. Insulin pumps use shortacting insulin, which acts as normal pancreatic secretion. In conventional therapy, once the insulin is injected, it can’t be slowed down or stopped. Insulin pumps on the other hand can be slowed down, stopped or increased for a few minutes or a few hours depending on the activity.” >> Insulin pumps can pump the exact amount of insulin that your body needs at a particular moment

Cancer, as it severely affects the patient, as well as his/ her family, friends and caregivers. Another disease that is a huge challenge for India is diabetes. You also work to raise awareness. What are some uncommon conditions or diseases that are usually ignored, which you believe people need to be more aware of? We think diseases such as diabetes need to be taken more seriously and require more awareness. Both, the approach, as well as management of this condition is extremely casual. Policy changes also need to be made to make preventive health checkups mandatory, as this can help with early diagnosis of conditions. Through proper disease management, it will be possible to bring a health condition under control. What do you have to say about the current medical infrastructure in India? The development of infrastructure in India is fragmented, especially when you think of the doctor-to-patient ratio and access to hospitals in rural areas, as compared to those in urban cities. Every individual has the right to quality treatment and access to healthcare should be an important goal. However, within these limitations, there is more awareness now, especially about the importance of services such as disease management, compliance and preventive health checkups.

According to a new study published in Journal Diabetologia, researchers compared outcome of 345 children between 2 to 9-years-old who were using insulin pumps to control their type 1 diabetes, to a similar number of children who were receiving standard insulin injections. The children were monitored for a period of three and a half years. By the end of the study, the rate of low blood sugar in the insulin pump group fell by half and in the insulin injection group, it rose from about seven instances per 100 patients in a single year, to more than 10 instances.

Case study 10-year-old Rahul More benefited from the insulin pump therapy at Bombay Hospital. After he fainted at school, it was revealed that his blood sugar had touched 450mg/dl and he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. After finding out about his predicament, Dr. Piya, his endocrinologist at Bombay Hospital suggested insulin pump therapy. Within a short span of time, Rahul was back to normal and even started participating in sports activities in school.

Dear Barbara, I love well-kept nails, so I take care of mine by visiting a manicurist every two weeks. Recently, my manicurist had to leave town and I had to try another one. While the new manicurist is good, I can see fungus, or some sort of bacterial infection developing on my nails. Could this be caused by a bad manicure? I am getting very worried. What should I do? — rujita sen, Colaba Dear rujita, First off, don’t panic. If you suspect that you have a fungal infection, consult your doctor. This might have happened due to unsanitary conditions at the salon. To prevent this from happening in the future, I suggest you carry your own manicure kit, or make sure that the salon you visit has impeccable hygiene. Also, make sure your manicurist washes her hands properly before she starts doing your manicure and wash your hands immediately after the procedure is done. Consider using a cuticle softener, rather than cuticle scissors to reduce the risk of broken, exposed skin, which can easily contract infections. >> Ensure that your manicurist washes her hands before giving you a manicure

Dear Barbara, Recently, I have noticed a few small, fleshy, grainy bumps developing on my hand. These look terrible and I have no idea when or how they came up. I’ve tried using several creams, but they aren’t working. The bumps are also slightly painful, which makes me feel uncomfortable. What should I do? Please help! — sumita Duggal, marine lines Dear sumita, Going by your description, you seem to be suffering from warts. Warts are not hazardous to your health, so don’t worry. They are mostly caused by a viral infection and are a common beauty problem. They are communicable, and can be transmitted from one person to another, or be transferred by something you touch. However, they are easy to cure. While most of them go away on their own, you can try the duct tape method for immediate results. Cover your wart with a small piece of duct tape (the plain gray kind, not clear) for six days, then soak the area in warm water and rub the wart off with a pumice stone. This trick usually works.

decade ago, if a man got a manicure and pedicure, it was considered to be frivolous, far from macho and downright vain. However, if you take vanity out of the equation, certain grooming practices will help you keep your hair, health and skin in tip-top shape. Take a look at what habits you must incorporate in your grooming routine.

saviour sunsCreen Forget fine lines and wrinkles, sunscreen is going to save your skin from a lot worse. If pigmentation and patchy skin seems like a bad look to sport, let’s not even get into the ugly beast that is skin cancer. A little sunscreen goes a long way, so even if you are indoors, in a naturally-lit room, remember to apply some sunscreen and save yourself from spending an exorbitant amount of money to treat skin ailments that crop up as a result of prolonged exposure to harmful UV rays.

paCk up! If you live in a city like Mumbai, exposure to heat, dust, pollution and grime is inevitable. You may want to believe that your face wash makes

the cut when it comes to cleansing your face, but we’re going to have to burst your bubble. While using face wash is good to superficially cleanse your skin, it won’t cleanse your pores, restore your skin’s oil

balance or prevent acne — which is an outcome of oily, clogged pores. So, use 15 minutes of your time, every week, to apply a face mask. A clay-based mask will soothe aggravated skin and cleanse it deeply, without drying it out too much. We admit that it takes some getting used to, but apply it while you read a book or play your favourite video game and you won’t even realise that you have a face pack on!

a notCh higher Once you’ve gotten used to the idea of a face pack, it’s time to take things to the next level and get a manicure and pedicure. While there is no doubt that it helps keep your hands and feet look impeccably groomed, a monthly visit (if you can’t find the time and energy to make an appointment every 15 days) is excellent for your skin. Pedicures and manicures remove dead skin, improve blood flow to the region (especially if you spend long hours on your feet or commuting) and help avoid ingrown toe nails, which are a common problem when you wear closed shoes. Not only is the therapy extremely relaxing, your skin will be healthy and you will be able to keep foot odour, bacterial infections and dry skin at bay.

Chop Chop! Remember the good old days in school, when you were reprimanded for having long, unkempt nails? Turns out, they were on to something. Apart from giving you a well put-together appearance, regularly trimming your nails also keeps nail infections at bay. The longer your nails are, the higher risk you are at of developing a fungal or bacterial infection. Not only are these infections painful and unsightly, when severe, they can also cause your nails to break!

Festive Season Sales Could Be Better Spending Sentiment Index improves, suggesting...

By A Business Reporter

A

steady uptrend in the Spending Sentiment Index strongly suggests that the 2014 festive season would result in higher sales within categories like homes, two- and four-wheelers as well as home appliances, says Debopam Chaudhuri, Chief Economist, ZyFin Research. He was commenting on on the ZyFin Consumer Outlook Index numbers for the month of September. The Spending Sentiment Index assesses willingness to make bigticket purchases in the next six months. The index has improved to 32.3 in September 2014 from 30.8, with improvements in every product category surveyed. Overall, the ZyFin Consumer Outlook Index of India (COI) has regis-

tered a score of 45.2 in September 2014, as compared to 43.6 in the previous month, a 1.6-point increase. The uplift in sentiment this close to the festive season is an encouraging sign, particularly after two lacklustre years. This increase removes any concerns of waning positive sentiment, prompted by the sudden dip in the August score. Since April 2014, the average index level has been at 43.9, as compared to 40.9 for the same time last year. Incidentally, another barometer, the Employment Sentiment Index has also witnessed an uptick. The index, which is a tracker of the employment situation as perceived by consumers moved up to 53.1 in September 2014 from 50.9 in August 2014. This indicates consumer outlook on personal job se-

curity and the unemployment rate has shown a healthy increase over the previous month. However, the Inflation Sentiment Index, based on the largest inflationary expectations survey in the world dropped by 0.9 points to 25.8, from 26.7 in the previous month, reflecting that consumers are still significantly aggrieved by inflationary conditions, and do not expect price levels to come down in the near future. Overall, in September 2014, of the 18 cities surveyed, 13 showed improvement in consumer confidence as compared to the previous month. The five cities with the highest scores were Hyderabad, Mangalore, Delhi, Guwahati and Bengaluru. Mumbai saw a rise in consumer confidence by 6.2 points to 49.1 which also is a positive for the city's festive season spending.

mployees in India are expected to see a 10.8% salary hike in 2015, even as pay increases across Asia Pacific region are set to rise by an average 7% in the coming year, says a Towers Watson 2014-15 Asia-Pacific Salary Budget Planning Report. According to it Pakistan, Bangladesh and Vietnam are set to lead the way with over 11% overall salary increases while India is placed at the fourth position with an increase of 10.8%. The report added that though salary across the regions are set to rise, a corresponding rise in inflation would mean that pay increases in 'real terms' would be eroded significantly in the coming year. China is expected to see the highest salary increase of around 5.2% in real terms in the region, followed by Pakistan (4.5%), Bangladesh (4.3%), Vietnam (4.1%) and Sri Lanka (3.8%). India was ranked sixth with a corresponding real increase of 3.5%, reports PTI. alling for radical steps within stock exchange space, leading bourse BSE's chief Ashish Chauhan has said that the players in this business need to change their mindset and shift focus from trading revenues to give a boost to the capital-raising atmosphere. At the same time, he also expressed optimism that Indian exchanges have a potential to become a major capital-raising avenue and can help attract a significant part of global funds, given the high return potential of Indian markets vis-a-vis losses suffered by investors in Chinese and other markets. "There is almost USD 40 trillion worth money which is available in private hands and is in search of good returns and is looking for more safer harbours. "India is slowly becoming a market which is attractive not only from return perspective but also from the investor protection perspective. That the Indian markets are now becoming top markets in terms of investor protection. However, exchanges would need to shift their mindset. We have to participate in India's growth and become a catalyst and growth engine or our economic growth story. We need to shift focus from trading to capital raising," Chauhan told PTI in an interview in New York. Chauhan, CEO of Asia's oldest stock exchange which also happens to be the world's largest in terms of number of listed companies, is here to participate in various business meetings and investor roundtables in the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's five-day US visit ending tomorrow. "Today, a large portion of the ex-

BSE CEO Ashish Chauhan changes' revenue come from trading, that is from transaction charges, and we need to focus now more on capital raising," he said. "When Indian stock market automation happened 20 years ago, there was the hope that modern capital markets would bring more domestic investments into Indian markets and the household savings would be channelised into listed companies and those companies would create jobs and take forward our economy. "But, in last 20 years, we have failed to raise the confidence of Indian investors, especially the retail investors, and because of that their numbers are almost same today," said Chauhan, who also happened to be part of the initial team of BSE's younger rival NSE when it was set up over two decades ago. The BSE's Chief Executive Officer said that although India has made huge strides in making its capital markets more transparent, fair and efficient, "We have somehow not created desired investor confidence because of which they have gone into gold, real estate etc." "There are two aspects, both for retail and institutional investors. It is about their rights. When an investor invests in a company, the promoters also need to be made accountable for the rights of the minority shareholders he said. (PTI)

"This, in turn, will lead to inflationary pressures that affect real salary increases. The report further noted that in 8 out of the 10 sectors surveyed, the pay raises for Executive Directors and Senior Management in India are expected to be higher than or equal to 2014 with the professional services sector particularly standing out at 4.5%. In India all employees - from production workers to executive directors -- are set to have higher pay raises than last year. MUMBAI | TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2014

r Vinod Hasal's Radha Krishna Academy of Dance and Music, South Africa presented a unique programme of African drum music and Kathak dance at ISKCON auditorium last week. Besides the dynamic drum music, the splendid Kathak performance by Vinodini Hasal left a lasting impression on the packed audience. The programme announcement stated that 540 drums would be played, which was quite puzzling for this reporter who was left wondering how and where the drummers would be accomodated and where would the dancers dance? This reporter was pleasantly surprised to see that behind every seat in the audience, drums were kept and the audience was asked to play along with the host of the show Dr Vinod Hasal. Starting

with simple beats by Vinod and his group of talented drummers, the audience followed and the complete atmosphere was charged with exciting rhythm and the audience were completely exhilarated, followed with a song in praise of Lord Ganesh sung with spiritual fervour by Bhavdeep Jaipurwale. Besides the display of thumris like 'Sundara Mukh' and 'Chalo Sakhi', Vinodini proved the point that a classical dancer has the talent and calibre to dance any form of dance, whether it is hip-hop, belly dance, folk dance or contemporary. Vinodini is a versatile danseuse and has the talent to transform the audience to any level of technical or expressional exuberance or even a spiritual Sufi number that takes the audience closer to the Almighty. If Vinodini continues to dance with same amount of passion and zeal, she can be among the front rank of dancers.

very year a unique tabla event is held in the city to commemorate the late Ustad Nizamuddin Khan. He was a fabulous tabla player who injected liveliness into any performance of which he was a part. The tabla event is organised by 'Khayal Trust' in collaboration with 'Kalabharati', with support from ITC/SRA. Tabla players from various parts of the country have displayed their talent here in the past and the audience has enjoyed a variety of percussion wizardry from various artists of eminence – Anindo Chatterjee, Nayan Ghosh, Sabir Khan, Arvindkumar Azad, Dr Aneesh Pradhan and Yogesh Samsi. The programme this year began with a solo tabla recital by Ramdas Palsule who is one of the brightest tabla artistes of the country. We have seen him accompanying instrumentalists of stature of Shahid Pervez (sitar), Tarun Bhattacharya (santoor) and Ronu Mazumdar (bansuri). Palsule hails from Pune and is originally an engineer. He gave up engineering to pursue a career as a tabla artiste. He formance. is a pupil of the veteran Suresh Talwalkar. Palsule belongs to the Farukhabad “A tabla artiste, though trained in a par- school of the tabla. axman Uttekar, celebrated Director of Photography, makes his directorial debut with the film ‘Tapal’. Nandu Madhav is a postman of an obscure village in Maharashtra where he stays with his wife (Veena Jamkar). They don’t have any children, which is a source of constant grief to them. A young school brat (Mangesh Hadavle) who hates school and creates a lot mischief is taken under the wing by the postman’s family. The boy writes a love letter to the village chief’s daughter which is a source of great consternation to him as one of his friends has been banished from the village because of the same misdemeanor.

IN BRIEF Gwalior gharana concert

National Gallery of Modern Art and Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sangrahalaya will feature eminent Gwalior gharana vocalist Neela Bhagwat in a special concert entitled 'Mahatma' on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti on Wednesday, October 2, at 6.30 pm at the National Gallery of Modern Art, 2nd floor, opposite the Museum, Colaba. Entry Free.

Superhero film

Everybody likes to imitate their favourite superheroes and gods. But if someone were to imagine themselves as the incarnation of god then, imagine what fun that would be? This is the plot of the upcoming Marathi movie 'Avatarachi Goshta' produced by Asian Entertainment. The debutant child talents in this movie – Mihiresh Joshi and Yash Kulkarni – share the screen with Adinath Kothare and Sulabha Deshpande, Sunil Abhyankar, Leena Bhagwat and Rashmi Khedekar.

four segments (chatusra), I will try and use my imagination and play it as a three segment piece (teesra),” said Palsule. He played the 10 beat jhaap taal in all its variations with vigour as well as sensitivity. He was accompanied on the harmonium by Milind Kulkarni who was precise and perfect in rhythm. Veteran tabla player Omkar Gulwady was in his element as he played the 16-beat teen taal. Gulwady belongs to the old school which accords equal importance to sound and silence. He has trained under the most knowledgeable masters like Taranath Rao and Arvind Mulgaonkar. He played compositions of past masters like Haji Khan, Subramam and earned the appreciation of the audience. Siddesh Bicholkar lent immaculate support to Gulwady. Neela Bhagwat, senior exponent of the Gwalior gharana was sandwiched between the two solo tabla performances. She sang a splendid thumri in the raga 'Mand Jogiya' which is a rare combination. It was followed by 'Tadpe Bin Balam Mora Jiya', the dadra immortalised by the great Siddheshwari Devi. It had that special voice thrown in which touched the heartstrings of music lovers. She concluded with the tappa 'O Miyan Jaanewale' in the raga 'Kafi'. Mukta Raste on the tabla and Sandeep Mishra on the sarangi lent superb support to her.

He is frightened and implores the postman to get back his letter but the loving duo take him to town and try to ease his troubles. But the boy is adamant on getting his letter back and refuses to go to his village unless his letter has been returned to him. The villagers assume the boy to be kidnapped and when they find him in the postman’s house they banish the couple from the village. But the boy who grows up and returns to his village (Milind Gunaji) is all misty eyed on remembering the love showered on him by the couple. The film has good performances by the entire cast especially Nandu Madhav and Veena Jamkar. The child artiste is impressive. The excellent cinematography capturing the village contours very well. The film deserves a look in for its good theme and good performances. A good debut by Laxman Uttekar. The film is bound to win the appreciation of the audience.

A new romantic album ‘Mann Ek Pakhru’ was launched on the Universal label with nine songs composed by Sunil Kerkar, produced by Rajesh Pawar, sung by veterans like Shankar Mahadevan, Mahalaxmi Ayyer, Bela Shende, Rahul Saxena and debutant Rachla Amonkar from Goa. The lyrics are by Pramod Koyande.

Debutant Kolwalkar in 'Miss Match'

Popular model Mrunmayee Kolwalkar will make her big screen debut in Alok Shrivastava’s romantic comedy ‘Miss Match’ with co-star Bhushan Pradhan. The film about arranged marriages versus love marriages is written by Nitin Dixit with music by Manas. The other members of the star cast include Uday Tikekar, Bhau Kadam and Jaywant Bhalekar

UMBAI: Indian Oil staved off Air India’s challenge to clinch their maiden Super League title, the symbol of supremacy in Mumbai hockey. The Indian Oil side, who had finished runners-up to Western Railway in 2004, defeated former champions Air India by a close 3-2 margin in the final of theMHAL League -2014, conducted by the Mumbai Hockey Association

Limited and jointly sponsored by PMC Bank, Bank of India and Union Bank, and played at the MHAL Stadium, Churchgate, here, on Monday evening. Olympian Prabhjot Singh struck two goals, one in each half and Gurjinder Singh converted a penalty stroke in the second half to ensure Indian Oil emerge victorious. Meanwhile, Gaganpreet Singh scored both the goals,

the first from a penalty corner conversion and the second from a penalty stroke to spark Air India’s fight back. The oilmen went into the match with a slight psychological edge having beaten Air India by an identical scoreline in the league phase but their skipper Olympian Deepak Thakur did not think that was an advantage. “That past result did not count as we were playing the

final and fighting for the title. We played to our game plan and succeeded in winning,” he said while relaxing after the match. Mr. Ankesh Jain, Assistant General Manager (AGM), Union Bank of India, presented the championship trophy and the winner’s cheque of Rs 1.10 lakh to the triumphant Indian Oil team and the runners-up trophy and a cheque of Rs 70,000 to Air India. NCHEON: Looking to end a 16-year-old gold drought, the Indian men's hockey team faces a tough South Korea test in the semi-finals of the 17th Asian Games, here today. The Sardar Singh-led side came back well after losing a tense third Pool B game against Pakistan 1-2 to put it across China 2-0 in their fourth and last league match to qualify for the last-four at the Seonhak hockey stadium. India, who last won a gold in the 1998 Bangkok edition under Dhanraj Pillay's captaincy, are once again looking for a top finish and gain a direct entry into the 2016 Rio Olympics. However, a lot of concerns lie in all departments of their game. Their defense is still not steady in the face of speedy thrusts and the weakness was evident against a skillful Pakistan side. The Indian attack also lacks a real 'livewire' approach and the midfield has still not exercised the authority required at this level. India are depending on earning penalty corners to move ahead in matches, a dangerous trend, and with ace drag-flicker Rupinderpal Singh injuring his groin in the second game against Oman has really not been up to the mark. India are thus leaning on V R Raghunath to bail them out when the chips are down. The fact that Sunil, Chinglensana Singh, Danish Mujtaba and Birendra Lakra have just one field goal each

to their name – even after playing against minnows like Oman and Sri Lanka – tells its own tale. The Indian forwards just run out of ideas when in sight of the target and lack imagination in beating the rival defensive line when the chance opens up. Rupinder still remains the top scorer for the team with 6 goals to his credit, scored in the first two games, while Raghunath has scored five, from penalty corners and penalty strokes. Four-time gold medal winners Korea can just not be taken lightly and have prowess in both field-goal scoring as well as in penalty corner essays. Drag-flick expert Jang Jonhyun, who has already fired 5 goals from short corner awards, besides notching up one-field goal and a penalty stroke strike, is the leading goal scorer of the tournament so far. Another frontline player Nam Hyunwoo, who is a real threat to the Indian defense, will be the man to be marked tightly with his penchant for scoring when even a whiff of a chance arises. He has notched up six field goals so far. He has been backed up in the forward line by Yoo Myosik (4 field goals) and the Indian defense might have a real tough task before them to deny these two speedy and skillful players entries into their 'D'. The Indian team's think tank will be hoping that the defense stands up to the Korean threat and take them to its 12th Asiad final.

‘Super Dan’ takes gold in epic final I

NCHEON: Badminton king Lin Dan saw off world champion Chen Long in an epic Asian Games final as he successfully defended his title and showed he can still dominate the sport at 30. "Super Dan", a day after beating his arch-rival Lee Chong Wei, bested a challenger five years his junior who is considered his successor at the top of the sport. Chen went a game up in the all-Chinese final but Lin fought back to take the second before a show of power and agility in the decider took him home 12-21, 21-16, 21-16. The tense conclusion to the world-standard competition left 25-year-old Chen without a win against the twice Olympic and five-time world champion in seven at-

tempts. As Lin's fans gathered outside the Gyeyang arena, banging on the windows to take a picture with him, the Chinese star said fierce air conditioning had made the job tough. "I'm very happy I took the gold medal -- Chen Long and I have had a difficult tournament because of the wind on the court, but we played a very good match for the crowd," said Lin, echoing complaints from several players in Incheon. Asked whether anyone else could replace him as a Chinese shuttling legend, Lin pointed to team-mate Chen. After a match in which Lin Dan's name was being constantly yelled by the crowd, a gracious Chen said it did not upset him. "We're all from

China and whoever wins, it's OK -- I just try my best."

MESMERISING DUEL A confident Chen was in attacking mood in the first game, surging to an 11-4 lead. Lin failed to close out the points as Chen dug out returns and blocked powerful drives. A flat Lin put the final two points in the net for Chen to take it 21-12. The second game was a mesmerising duel as Lin closed Chen's early three-point lead and went into the break 11-8 up after a driving backhand pass followed by an unreturnable body shot. But Chen punched back to 16-16, keeping his head in complex rallies before his veteran team-mate turned on the class.

Indian men lose to Qatar in volleyball

NCHEON: India's male spikers lost their second consecutive group E play-off encounter as they went down to Qatar in straight games in the volleyball event at the Asian Games. Qatar won by an identical margin of 25-20 25-20 25-20 in a match that lasted an hour and 10 minutes and also officially ended India's chances of making it to the knock-out rounds. India have already lost to South Korea in an earlier encounter. None of the Indian players were upto the mark as there weren't too many successful spikes. The highest

scorer for India was Mandeep Singh with 9 points while Lavmeet Karariya and Naveen Raja Jacob logged home 7 points each. For Qatar, Nadr Sadikh scored 12 points while Ibrahim notched up 11 points. For Indians, the worst performers were 6 ft 9 inch tall GR Vaishnav, who had a horrible Games scoring only four points while libero Kanagaraj Sivasubramanian also couldn't retrieve the powerful smashes of Nadr and John Chigbo.

I am very happy to get the gold which I expected to win today. I have trained for this gold over the last three years. I had waited for this after missing the last two Asian Games. Seema Punia clinches first athletics gold in Asian Games By SS Ramaswamy

NCHEON:: Discus thrower Seema Punia Antil ended India's goldless streak in track and field events on the third day of athletics competitions as she beat back a strong challenge from two Chinese rivals to bag the coveted yellow metal at the Asian Games. Seema ran away with the gold with a best throw of 61.03m in the women's discus throw final while teammate Krishna Poonia finished fourth with a below par 55.57m at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium here. Prior to Seema's golden throw, women's metric miler O P Jaisha and men's 3000m steeplechaser Naveen Kumar picked up a bronze each to boost the country's medal tally from athletics to eight from three days. 31-year-old Seema, who did not participate in the last two Asian Games and who came here after winning a silver in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, took the lead with her very first throw of 55.76 before coming up with her best effort with a throw of 61.03m off her fourth attempt. China's Lu Xiaoxin took the silver in 59.35m while her compatriot Tan Jian, who fin-

ished sixth in the last two World Championships, bagged the bronze with a throw of 59.03m. Seema, who became emotional during the medal ceremony, told reporters that she had been waiting for this moment over the last three years. "I am very happy to get the gold which I expected to win today. I have trained for this gold over the last three years. I had waited for this after missing the last two Asian Games," she said. "I usually don't perform well in my first throw. But I followed my coach's instructions today to hurl the disc past the 55m mark with my first attempt," she said. She said her silver medal in the Glasgow CWG "motivated me to go for the gold here." Asked whether the damp weather conditions affected the athletes in any way, she said, "I wish I had brought two extra pairs of shoes." Kerala-born Jaisha won the bronze in the women's 1500m while army athlete Naveen Kumar stood third in the men's 3000m steeplechase as Indians bagged three medals on the third day of the competitions in the blue-riband discipline. The diminutive Jaisha did some fine front running after the others, including two-

time gold medal winner and defending 1500m champion Maryam Yusuf Kamal of Bahrain, preferred to stay back and come up with a strong finish later. The Indian runner, married to Punjab-based coach Gurmeet Singh, was leading the bunch till just before the start of the final lap when silver winner Mimi Belete, the gold medallist in 5000m in 2010, made the move and overtook Jaisha. Undeterred, Jaisha hung to the lead runner's heels on the back straight but on the second last curve lost some pace even as eventual winner Maryam came up on her and overtook the Indian prior to the last bend in the race. Jaisha tried her level best to catch up to the lead runners without success even as Maryam, bronze medal winner in 2012 London Olympic Games and a former twotime world champion earlier, made a final kick and surged into the lead to take the gold ahead of compatriot Mimi in 4:09.90. Mimi clocked 4:11.03 and Jaisha clocked 4:13.46. Jaisha said it was thanks to India's reappointed middle and long distance coach Dr Nikolai that she could get the medal, her second after a bronze in 2006 Doha Asian Games.

I

NCHEON: Sania Mirza and Saketh Myneni combined well to clinch gold medal in the mixed doubles event as India's tennis campaign at the Asian Games concluded with a rich haul of five medals at the Asian Games. The second seeds overwhelmed the top-seeded Chinese Taipei pair of Hao Ching Chan and Hsien Yin Peng 6-4 6-3 in the summit clash in only 69 minutes. Myneni though could not make it two out of two as he lost the men's doubles final with Sanam Singh to settle for a silver. The Indians lost the keenly-contested final 57 6-7(2) to Korea's Yongkyu

After a disappointing few days for Indian basketball, the women cagers finally had reason to smile after they beat Mongolia to set up a fifth-place play-off against Kazakhstan. Playing for pride at the Hwaseong Sports Complex Gymnasium, the women's team outplayed its Mongolian counterpart 68-50 after taking a lead from the first quarter itself. The Smruthi Radhakrishan-led side covered all bases from the start and kept increasing the lead as they progressed. Indian coach Francisco Javier Garcia Alvarez was seen celebrating the win with assistant Divya Singh but a tougher test lies ahead.

The defeat for the fifth seeded Indian men meant that Sanam could not win a second consecutive gold at the Asian Games, having won gold with Somdev devvarman at the Guangzhou Games in 2010. NCHEON: Indian women's hockey team put up a determined effort before going down to a superior South Korean outfit by 1-3 margin in the semi-final of the 17th Asian Games. India will now play in the bronze medal play-off match against Japan, whom China beat 1-0 in the other semi-final. Korea opened the account as early as third minute when Kim Darae's reflex snap shot beat Indian goalie Savita all ends up it make it 1-0. In the 11th minute, India levelled the proceedings courtesy wonderful strike from Namita Toppo from the the top of the 'D'. Namita entered the box and took a rasping shot at the corner of the net to make it 1-1. After finishing on even

keel in the first quarter, Indian girls fought hard in the second quarter before conceding the lead in the 28th minute with a strike from Han Hyelyoung. Korea finally took an unassailable lead in the 42nd minute when Park Mihyun took advantage of poor defending after being fed right in-front of the Indian custodian. Park trapped the ball and then had enough time to turn and slot it after it rebounded off Savita. In the final quarter, India did get a penalty corner but drag-flick specialist Jaspreet Kaur failed to convert it. Indian women will aim for revenge when they meet Japan in the bronze medal play-off. Japan won that contest 1-0 in Guangzhou edition four years back.

son on the professional circuit. Yuki Bhambri won twin bronze medals in the men's singles and double with Divij Sharan while Sania and Prarthana Thombare won bronze in the women's doubles event. Interestingly, Sania, now has eight Asian Games medals to her credit. Myneni, playing Asian Games for the first time, was not only terrific with his big service game he was very agile at net, firing a lot of volleys for winners. The Indian pair targetted Hao and many a times the Taipei girl took the furious shot hit by Myneni on her body. The Indians broke Hao in

the seventh game to take a mini lead in the first set, in which they did not face a single breakpoint. After that break, the set went on serve and got closed when Peng hit a backhand wide on Myneni's serve. Saketh and Sania made a perfect start in the second set by breaking Peng in the first game but it was neuwhen Sania tralised dropped her serve in the fourth game. After being down 0-40, Sania and Saketh saved two breakpoints but hit a backhand out to lose serve. However, they got the break back and again it was Hao who was targetted.

NCHEON: Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza feels the five medals that the team has managed to grab at the ongoing Asian Games is a pretty good performance given that the country did not come with the best unit possible for the event. "It has been a pretty good week. We (she and Prarthana Thombare) got a medal (bronze) in women's doubles which is huge because it's something that we never did. I had to be the leader. It's a young team we came here with, didn't come with the best

team possible, especially with the guys. Five medals (including today's) is pretty good," she said. Hyderabad and Dubaibased Sania spoke to reporters as the matches for the day had been put off due to continuous rains at Incheon since Sunday night. The 27-year-old Indian tennis star, who was initially inclined towards skipping the Games to gain doubles points on the WTA tour before changing her mind, said the reason was to provide the country with its best shot at winning more medals in these Games, her fourth on the trot.

"The minute I made the decision to come here, I knew it was the right decision. For me the most important thing was to give India the best chance of winning as many medals as possible. I did what I could and I got two in the two events I played (women's doubles and mixed doubles where she and Myneni will fight for the gold). "Personally it's my fourth Asian Games in a row and I have got medals in every single Asian Games I have been to. For me to get eight medals in the last four editions is pretty good," she remarked.

Indian men win, women lose in Sepaktakraw

Indian men's Sepaktakraw team registered a comprehensive straightgame win over Brunei and Nepal but their women counterparts sunk against Indonesia in preliminary round matches. The Indian team took just 38 minutes to see off the challenge from Brunei 21-12 21-15 in men's regu preliminary group B match early in the day before getting a 2-0 result in their favour after Nepal did not start the match, here at Bucheon Gymnasium. With two wins from as many matches, the Indian men are now placed at the top of the group, while Korea is second.

Sailing put off due to unfavourable conditions

Rain played spoilsport on Monday as it affect the Asian Games yachting competition here and all the races, barring some in the match racing category, scheduled for today at the Wangsan Sailing Marina have been postponed. All those races will now take place today.

India disappoint in canoeing and kayaking final

It turned out to be a disappointing day for the Indians in canoeing and kayaking competitions as none of them could fetch a medal despite reaching the finals in several events. Gaurav Tomar, who had topped the semifinal yesterday, found the going tough at the Hanam Misari Center as he took 4:17:389 minutes to cover 1000m in the Canoe Men's Single (C1) Final A to finish at the seventh spot. Albert Raj Selvaraj also had a disappointing outing in the Kayak men's Single K1 Final A as he finished at eighth spot after clocking 3:59.933 to cover a distance of 1000m.

NCHEON: It turned out to be a largely disappointing day for Indian boxers at the Asian Games with former World Championship bronze-medallist Vikas Krishan (75kg) being the only one to advance, making the quarterfinal, while three others fell by the wayside. Gaurav Bhiduri (52kg), Mandeep Jangra (69kg) and Kuldeep Singh (81kg) bowed out after losing their respective quarterfinal bouts. Vikas was the first Indian boxer to take the ring today and he advanced to the quarterfinals after a comfortable win over Kanybek Uulu Azamat of Kyrgyzstan. The former World Championship bronze-medallist was on the top of his defensive game against Azamat. Vikas is making his debut in the middleweight category after injury forced

first choice and defending gold-medallist Vijender Singh to give the Games a miss. The Haryana-lad relied on his tried and tested technique of counterattack. He waited for his rival to drop the guard and then knocked him back with incisive jabs. With a shell guard which rarely gave Azamat any chance of landing a clear punch, Vikas impressed with his foot movement and his ring craft was duly appreciated by judges, who declared him an unanimous 3-0 winner. Vikas will face Normatov Hurshidbek of Uzbekistan in the quarterfinal. However, Asian Championships silvermedallist Mandeep and rookie Gaurav Bhiduri fell by the wayside in the last eight stage losing their respective bouts 0-3.
