he Agripada Police and Crime Branch unit have claimed to have solved the abduction case of a wellknown builder's teenage son after arresting five accused in this connection. The five men allegedly abducted the teenager at knife point on Saturday evening and demanded Rs 10 lakh as ransom money. Interestingly, the teenager himself arranged the ransom money from three of his friends and handed it over to the young abductors, who then freed him just hours after the money was arranged. The case was solved after arresting the five accused, including a friend of the victim's.

According to police sources, Faiz Abdul Sheikh (19), Raibar Qureshi (19), Shahbaz Imtiaz Sheikh (19) Harish Khan (19) and Riyaz Khan (20), have been identified as the abductors. The first three were caught by the Crime Branch, while the rest were apprehended by the Agripada police. According to the police, Harish Khan knew the 17year-old victim who has been studying in Class 12 at an international high school in Powai. Harish had, on Saturday, asked the victim, a resident South Mumbai, to meet him near Classic Tower in Agripada. While he was waiting for Harish, Faiz, Raibar and Shahbaz pounced on him, threatened him with a knife

before pushing him into a taxi. The trio had allegedly threatened him to arrange Rs 10 lakh or face the dire consequences. The victim was specifically asked to arrange money through his friends and not to inform his parents, suspecting the family would alert the cops. While the victim dialed his friends seeking monetary help, the accused kept the taxi moving and drove him to various locations in the city to hoodwink the police. The vehicle stopped at three locations – Dadar, BKC and Khar – from where the victim collected different amounts from three of his friends and arranged Rs 10 Continued on pg 8 «

Sena: Drop ‘secular’, ‘socialist’ from Constitution Preamble By Prashant Hamine

hiv Sena yesterday jumped in swirling controversy over the picture of the old preamble of our Constitution that had no mention of the words “secular” and “socialist” in the advertisements issued by the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry to mark the Republic Day. Speaking to newspersons yesterday, senior Sena Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut demanded the permanent deletion of the two words from the constitution. The Sena MP remarked that the Sena welcomed the exclusion of the two words from the Republic Day advertisement issued by the I&B Ministry. Raut said that though it might have been done inadvertently, it was like honouring the feelings of countless of majority Indians. If the words were deleted by

Sanjay Raut mistake then they should be deleted from the Constitution permanently. Raut pointed out that late Sena chief Bal Thackeray, and late freedom fighter Veer Savarkar before him, have always maintained that India was divided on the religious

line. Pakistan was created for Muslims and this country remains a Hindu Rashtra. He added that the minority community has been used only for political gains, while the Hindus have been continuously disrespected. Raut further contended that nowhere in the constitution it has been written that you mete out such treatment to Hindus and use Muslims to garner votes. The Sena MP stated that this mistake on the part of the government has happened only because destiny wanted this to happen. Modi is the Prime Minister of India, and his thoughts on Hindutva are strong. A war of words broke out between political parties yesterday when an advertisement issued by the I&B Ministry carried a picture of the Preamble to the Constitution as it appeared before the 42nd amendment, without the words “secular” and “socialist”.

dramatised biography of Sonia Gandhi, 'The Red Sari', was launched at Crossword on Wednesday. The book, written by Javier Moro, depicts the life of Sonia Gandhi in Italy and her life in India. He speaks about the inside tales on how Sonia Gandhi would select the sarees for her mother-in-law Indira Gandhi, and how she dealt with the confusion of whether to return back to Italy or continue to stay in India after Rajiv Gandhi's death, when her life was in danger. Javier Moro, the author of the book, stated that Sonia Gandhi refused all his attempts to meet her and when he finally got to meet her during the Padma Bhushan award party, he said to her, “I have been sleeping with you for four years.” Elaborating on the statement Moro said, “When I decided that I'm going to write about her life and about the minute details of what she went through after Rajiv Gandhi's and her mother-in-law's death, I lived with the character

t Ignatius High School, situated at Jacob Circle, will be celebrating 2015 as its centennial year. The co-educational school was founded in 1914 by Rev H B Marques who was later anointed as Monsignor Marques. He started this institution as a primary school in a small shed for the betterment of the society and today functions as a full-fledged high school. To celebrate and commemorate the centenary year, St Ignatius High School plans to host a yearlong series of events and programmes. This year, the Republic day was also celebrated in a unique way. The Republic day

function began with hoisting of the flag by Rev Fr Savio Rodrigues, the Manager of the School. This was followed by speeches in English and Marathi, patriotic songs were sung by the teachers and cultural dances were performed by the students. The programme continued with a rally held around Jacob Circle. The primary and secondary students participated in the rally with banners and placards depicting the Fundamental Rights of our country and the Glory of the School. Poster-making and essay competitions too were held in the school. The entire staff whole-heartedly worked towards making this programme a memorable one.

Topsgrup proposes public-private partnership By A Staff Reporter

n a pioneering development set to blaze a trail in enhanced security provision across the state of Maharashtra, the CEO and Vice Chairman of Topsgrup, one of the leading private security companies, Ramesh Iyer met with the Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis to put forward a proposal explaining how Topsgrup could support the home ministry and police force in creating a safe and secure state by potentially forming a public-private partnership. “In so doing, Topsgrup would work with the government to design a bespoke total security solutions delivery model covering areas such as traditional man guarding, high level/discrete strategic consultancy and technological innovations,” sources said. The meeting was a follow up to a number of ongoing discussions between Topsgrup and officials from the State of Maharashtra, fasttracked following the security breach around the recent Uber car case incident. Iyer personally went through the facets of the proposal in detail with Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis, who expressed interest in how a Total Security Solutions could actually be a cost-effective method, whereby Topsgrup and the state could work together in a collaborative manner. Topsgrup already provides a number of services in partnership with the Government, including background checks for all Pan Card Holders across India, a Government initiative, which

At Topsgrup, we are very excited with this proposed partnership and look forward to delivering excellence in every sector. The collaboration between private security companies and the government was welcomed by the Home Minister of India recently during a noted industry conference by FICCI, where he stated that there are plans to coach 50 lakh private security guards in India to man

A public-private partnership in the state of Maharashtra would mean more trained security personnel working alongside the police force and other government officials to reduce crime, develop more proactive and preventative security protocols and overall help to decrease costs, as safety standards increase.

Amidst all the Obama news everywhere, many also noticed what our dear Prime Minister Modi was upto. At Sunday’s tea party, Modi was dressed in a woollen bandhgala with ‘Narendra Damodardas Modi’ monogrammed

Many celebrities may have worn a style like this before but it was a first for Modi. The allwool fabric was woven with the name. He refused to give the names of

It is probably the first time that an Indian PM wore a bandhgala of this style and we it was made exclusively for Modi, Chauhan said. The midnight-blue bandhgala with

Indian political parties with strange names During the country's recent Lok Sabha elections, the BBC put together a list of lesser known political parties with the strangest names. Here's an excerpt: B Kumar Sri Sri launched the 'Indian Lovers Party' on Valentine's Day 2008 in Tamil Nadu. His bubble-gum pink posters announce the party's resolve to fight for star-crossed lovers from different castes and religious backgrounds, whose parents don't approve of their relationship.

The Election Commission can reject the application if certain conditions aren't met – for example, if the name has an obvious caste or religious reference. The 'Religion of Man Revolving Political Party of India' managed to get registered, though. Other parties with odd names, at least in English translation, include the 'Poor Man's Party' and the 'Yours-Mine Party'. The 'Indian Oceanic Party', launched in 2010, claims to be

Obama expressed a desire to buy at least the ‘Modi kurtas’ for himself. If the sight of Modi wearing his own name on his sleeve impressed him as much, he isn’t saying. “an ocean of philosophies, an ocean of honest people, an ocean where the power of creating a prosperous India is developed”, its website says. The party symbol, however, is not an ocean or a wave, but a telephone – representing a connection between people. The 'Pyramid Party of India', meanwhile, has been around since 1999 to “spread the twin concepts of vegetarianism and meditation”. Then there is the 'Stay Awake Party', a recent addition to the Election Commission's list of registered parties. The name echoes the cries of watchmen on the graveyard shifts who yell “stay awake!” periodically to remind each other to be vigilant. Technically, if parties don't fight elections for six consecutive years they are supposed to be taken off the registered list, but sometimes nobody bothers. People often create parties for social prestige and power, and also for perks like tax exemptions. The irony is that a whole lot of them get registered and never fight elections.

visibly embarrassed Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday ordered a probe into the delayed receipt of the invitation for the dinner meeting with US President Barrack Obama from the state government's office of the Special Commissioner in New Delhi. Owing to the costly lapse on the part of the state government officials at its Special Commissioners office in New Delhi, Fadnavis missed the most high profile meeting with the US President during his recent three-day visit. The Chief Minister stated that the invite for the meeting had been sent to the Com-

the invitation had been received by the government's secretary however that invitation did not reach Mantralaya on time. He said that the secretary who received the letter sent it by speed post. What has raised eyebrows in Mantralaya circles is that despite the fact that there is a mechanism in place for dispatch of daily mail between Mantralaya and New Delhi and more modern means of communication like e-mail, WhatsApp, the officials chose CM Devendra Fadnavis to send the invite by speed post. Of late, the office of the missioner's office on January state's Special Commissioner 17 itself at Maharashtra has been in the news for all Sadan in New Delhi. Speak- the wrong reasons. Soon after ing to newspersons here at the Lok Sabha elections, the Mantralaya, he admitted that Sena MPs had a run-in with

then commissioner Bipin Mallik over the poor quality of food. He has since been shunted and Abha Narayan Shukla has just taken charge over recently. Speaking about his visit at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Davos, he said that Microsoft has decided to set up two data centres at Mumbai and Pune. Microsoft has made a Rs 2,100 crore investment and the two centers will be the largest in Asia. The Japanese are going to set up Business Park wherein Japanese companies will set shop. Fadnavis however refused to divulge the quantum of investment expected out of his meetings with corporate honchos in Davos.

Tawde writes to London High Commissioner for purchase of Dr Ambedkar’s residence By Prashant Hamine

inister for School Education Vinod Tawde yesterday disclosed that he has already written a letter of intent to India's High Commissioner in London regarding the state government's intent to purchase of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's residence in London. Speaking to newspersons here he disclosed that the office of India's High Commissioner in London will take the necessary steps to acquire the property. The architect of our constitution Dr BR Ambedkar had in the 1920's stayed at the 2,050 square feet, threestoryed house on King Henry

Cong to take up Muslim quota, drought during budget session T

he Congress will take on the Devendra Fadnavis government in Maharashtra aggressively on the issues of drought and denial of reservation to Muslims during the budget session of the state legislature, scheduled to start from March 9, it said yesterday. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said the previous Congress-NCP government had given five per cent reservations to Muslims, not on the criterion of religion, but because of the community's backwardness. He was speaking after a meeting of party legislators.

In the winter session, Fadnavis had said he would seek the Advocate General's opinion on Muslim reservation and take a decision in a month's time, he pointed out. “The decision is yet to come and we have sought appointment with the Chief Minister to discuss the issue,” the senior Congress leader said. The new government passed a bill giving reservation to Marathas, but leaving out the Muslims, during the winter session last month. An earlier ordinance issued by the Congress-NCP government included both the communities. Vikhe Patil also said the

party had decided to strengthen co-ordination among the opposition parties. “In the districts where Congress does not have MLAs, it has been decided to appoint Members of Legislative Council as guardian legislators to co-ordinate with local unit to strengthen the party organisation. MLAs should also coordinate with the district units for organisational work,” he added. MLAs were also instructed to communicate about issues awaiting government clearance in their constituencies to his office, so that these issues could be raised in the session, he said.

tosh Das. Earlier Tawde chaired the meeting of District Planning and Development Committee (DPDC) for Mumbai Suburban District and approved the district plan of Rs 238.74 crore, out of which Rs 75 crore has been earmarked for scheduled castes and Rs 6 crore for tribal development. In order to ensure speedy and prompt administration the government has plans to install Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at the Mumbai Suburban District Collectors' Office. Tawde directed elected representatives to furnish details of areas of water logging in their respective constituencies within the next fortnight for better redressal of the problems before the monsoon season commences.

Hazare threatens to launch fresh Lokpal S

ocial activist Anna Hazare yesterday said he will once again launch a fresh agitation against the Narendra Modi government on the Lokpal issue. “The Modi government has not implemented the Lokpal Act even after 365 days of the President signing it. The Modi government has not fulfilled assurances made to people,” Hazare said. “The government is not serious on the issue of corruption. That is why an agitation will be launched once again on Lokpal, land acquisition act and black money,” he said in a statement this evening from Ralegan Siddhi in Ahmednagar district. “On black money, Modi said each Indian will get Rs 15 lakh when black money is brought back but people have not got even Rs 15,” Hazare said. The 77-year-old Gandhian also refused to be drawn into the subject of political slugfest going on between his two former proteges – Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal and

BJP's Kiran Bedi – in the Delhi Assembly elections. “People have become aware now of the fraud perpetrated on them. They will teach a lesson (to the BJPled government) the way they taught one to Congress. The masses have awakened after 2011 movement against corruption,” he told NDTV in an interview. “I don't want to go into these things. Ask me about other things, ask me about the country. An Arvind or a Kiran is not important.” Hazare said no change can be brought through party politics and that there was no mention of politics in the Indian Constitution. “No change can be brought through party politics. The Constitution also does not mention politics. It says any Indian citizen can contest elections. When 543 good individuals win and choose the Speaker of Lok Sabha and the Prime Minister and run the country, change will come,” he said. Hazare, however, acknowledged that the task was daunting and will take long to achieve.

Additional Municipal Commissioner SVR Shrinivas justified that before awarding the contract we had taken a legal opinion. He said, “Both contractors had quoted the same amount, so we had applied other standard operating procedures to select one

of the two contractors and awarded him a contract. The contractor is not blacklisted. I have been informed that he is no longer operational in KMC.” Finally, Standing Committee Chairman Yashodhar Phanse succumbed to the pressure of the opposition and did not pass the proposal. The proposal will be addressed again at the Standing Committee meeting next week.

day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government at the Centre faced a controversy after its ally Shiv Sena said it wants the words 'socialist' and 'secular' removed from the Preamble of the Constitution of India, lawyers and activists have said that the word 'socialist' is not relevant anymore, while others have supported the word 'secularism'. The controversy erupted after the government on Republic Day published an advertisement which had the words 'secular' and 'socialist' missing from an excerpt of the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut said, “Removing the words 'socialist' and 'secular' is not a controversy but the feeling of crores of Indians.” He even went on to say that crores of Indians want the words removed as the

Reacting to this, Special Public Prosecutor Nitin Pradhan said, “The two words were added in the Preamble in 1976 during the emergency, and there was a motive behind it. The first word 'socialist' is not even relevant in India anymore. And as far as 'secular' is concerned, it's more of a show off. India is a secular country and it always will be, there is no need to mention it separately in the Constitution Preamble. There is nothing wrong in Shiv Sena demanding the removal of these two words.” Famous legal counsel Mahesh Jethmalani said, “The word 'socialist' is irrelevant in our country and can't be practised in India as a political ideology. The word secular cannot be removed arbitrarily. This is an attempt to undermine the Constitution of the country,” Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyer said. The NCP also said that the BJP only wants a Hindu nation. “BJP does not want a socialist, secular state, they want a capitalist Hindu state,” NCP leader Nawab Malik said. “The words were included in the Constitution after an amendment in 1976. Obama: India best partner T

wo important announcements by President Obama before his departure will change, for the better, IndoAmerican relations. President Obama has stated that India could be the best partner of the United States. He has placed India above all countries with which the US has various kinds of mutual cooperative arrangements. A statement like this has never been made by any president of America. The truth is that there was suspicion on both sides of each other’s intentions and promises. Already several defence deals have been signed. A nuclear deal which was pending for seven years has been sealed. Both nations want to be each other’s best partners and this means, a historical new beginning has been made. Another important gain for India is Obama’s statement that India is “needed” in the United nation’s Security Council. The harsh fact is that though the US has been saying this, it took no firm, concrete steps to get India entry into it. The situation has now completely changed: the US will seriously attempt to get India in the UNSC. It has a major say in this regard and India can now expect a permanent seat in the council. The fact that India has signed defence deals with the US is a development which both Pakistan and China will not like. For Pakistan, it will be a big source of worry. It has no go but to depend on China for its defence needs. Another worry for Pakistan is the US which has been hugely funding Pakistan may stop its assistance.

he display of nari shakti at this year’s Republic Day parade was marred by vignettes of entrenched patriarchal behaviour in the VVIP enclosure. The contrast on either side of the security barricade could not have been greater. Rajpath was the platform to showcase women’s empowerment with three all-female contingents from the defence services included in the march-past. The VVIP box, on the other hand, was a reminder that not much has changed. Wives are still expected to wait hand and foot on their husbands. Television grabs caught at least two senior BJP leaders, Amit Shah and Venkaiah Naidu, sitting pretty while their wives gallantly held umbrellas over their heads to protect them from the rain. The gender gap was evident even on the VVVIP dais. While security officers were at hand with umbrellas for Barack Obama, Narendra Modi and Hamid Ansari, Michelle Obama and Salma Ansari had to hold their own umbrellas. Even in security protocol, it seems women don’t count for much. The images were a grim reminder that for every woman who shatters a glass ceiling, there are millions who remain trapped behind barriers of male orthodoxy. It was Narendra Modi’s idea to include all-women marching contingents in this year’s parade and also to have a woman officer escort Obama for the guard of honour inspection at the ceremonial welcome in Rashtrapati Bhavan. He wanted to show the US President that Indian women have come a long way. Great. But lessons in gender equality must begin at home for nari shakti to really bloom.

Another U-turn?

fter slamming former loyalists Arvind Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi for taking a U-turn, anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare looks set to make a U-turn himself. He may lend his name to a farmer agitation being planned by the Congress, a party he had denounced as corrupt. Congress sources say that former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s son, Deepender Hooda, is in touch with Anna through a Congress leader from Maharashtra to join a country-wide protest movement against the Modi government’s ordinance diluting the Land Acquisition Act. The sources claim that Anna is quite willing to side with the Congress on this issue because it concerns farmers. The irony cannot be missed. Not too long ago, Anna and the Congress were daggers drawn. Anna had denounced the Congress as

corrupt and the Congress slammed him as dictatorial and anti-democratic. With all his old loyalists deserting him for electoral politics, Anna stands alone now. He seems to be pining for a piece of action even if it means being seen in the company of a party he claimed to detest. As for the Congress, it’s clearly run out of ideas. It is desperate enough to turn to a man who paved the way for its denouement in the 2014 polls in the hope that he can resurrect the party’s fortunes. After all, it was his movement that created the groundswell for the BJP to come to power. The wheel has truly come full circle.

POWER TALK Arati R. Jerath ahead of him. But Shah’s term as BJP president is set to end this winter. BJP leaders believe his chances of getting a second term will definitely be impacted by the outcome of the Delhi polls. Shah was elected party president in place of Rajnath Singh mid-way through Singh’s three-year term. Consequently, he will have to seek re-election this winter when the term officially ends. Many senior leaders who feel slighted and humiliated by the Modi-Shah takeover of the BJP are waiting for Shah to make a mistake so that they can cut him down. Shah had a glorious run in 2014, when he steered the BJP to impressive scores in all the elections held that year. That is why he reigns supreme in the party. But if Delhi slips away from the BJP, you can be sure that Shah baiters will get active and try to scuttle his chances of another term as party president. Shah is acutely aware of the

Test of righteousness T

o illustrate the consistency in the conversation between Lord Krishna and Arjuna on the battlefield, Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa has quoted the first 27 verses in chapter one beginning dharma-ksetra kuru-ksetra, referring to Kuruksetra as the land of righteousness. Now when King Dhritarastra learned that Lord Krishna had accepted the position of chariot driver for Arjuna, he immediately was suspicious and became doubtful of his son, Duryodhana's chances for victory. At that time he asked his minister Sanjaya a redundant question as what did his sons and the son of his brother do in the first verse of chapter one. It should be understood in the correct context that the revelatory instructions given by Lord Krishna to Arjuna in the 700 verses of Srimad Bhagavad-Gita that is revealed within Krishna Dwaipayana Vyasa's monumental, historical epic, Mahabharata; as to what was being told by Sanjaya to Dhritarastra is actually a conversation described to Arjunas

great, grandson, Emperor Janamejaya by Vaisampayana Muni and it is he who is expressing the words dhritarastra uvaca meaning Dhritarastra said. Srimad Bhagavad-Gita begins with Dhritarastra asking Sanjaya: What did my sons

MATTER & SPIRIT and the sons of Pandu, assembled at the righteous land of Kuruksetra desirious of battle do? Now the question which arises, is what was the necessity of Dhritarastra asking Sanjaya what did they do; when he himself in the same verse says: they are assembled desirous of battle. The reason he is asking is because Kuruksetra is the land of righteousness. Dhritarastra was thinking: Kuruksetra is famous as the land of sacrifice for the demigods and also the abode of brahma-jnana, knowledge of the Ultimate Truth for all living entities. He was worried that under the potent

Line-up for foreign secretary’s post

W

ith foreign secretary Sujatha Singh entering the last six months of her twoyear term, speculation is mounting in the ministry of external affairs about her successor. At one point, it seemed that our ambassador in the US, Jai Shankar, may replace her. But that would have meant removing Singh before her tenure ends as Shankar retires at the end of January. MEA circles say that the Modi government didn’t want to land itself in a controversy over a move that could be interpreted as antiwoman. This is why speculation is rife that Arun Singh, our ambassador in France, could be the next foreign secretary. No-one knows for certain but the guesswork is based on a well thought out process of elimination. Going by seniority, Singh’s successor would have to be picked from the 1979 batch. Senior-most is India’s representative at the United Nations, Ashok Mukherjee. But he is recognised as someone too close to the Left. Next comes Anil Wadhwa, secretary east in MEA. Unfortunately, he has run foul of Modi who ticked him off publicly for a shoddy power point presentation on the eve of the visit to Myanmar, Australia and Fiji. Singh is third in seniority. MEA circles feel he is best placed to make it, given his outstanding career record and his varied experience around the world.

Not so ‘Lovely’

C

ongress circles are shocked by the manner in which Rahul Gandhi cut down Delhi party chief Arvinder Singh Lovely and forbade him from contesting. Lovely’s name had been announced in the first list of candidates as he was one of the party’s eight sitting MLAs. It seems that Lovely made the mistake of objecting to the projection of Ajay Maken as the Congress chief ministerial candidate. Although Lovely and Maken were known to get on well because of their common opposition to Sheila Dikshit, Lovely clearly developed ambitions after Dikshit lost the last Assembly election and retired from active politics. The projection of Maken shattered his dream. He voiced his protest to Rahul in a meeting. Rahul simply turned around and told him not to contest if that was the way he felt about the party’s decision on Maken. Lovely was left speechless. influence of Kuruksetra's righteous land, his sons would have decided to return half of the kingdom back unto the sons of Pandu now being free from all jealously? Or is it that the sons of Pandu fearing that the destruction of a dynasty is an unrighteous act in a holy place like Kuruksetra and have decided that it's best to retire to the forest and live as renunciates for the rest of their lives? By addressing Sanjaya, Dhritarastra means that by the mercy of Krishna Dwaipayana Vyasa, Sanjaya has become free from attachment and aversion and thus he will certainly speak the truth. By using the wordmamakah and pandavah in referring to his sons and the sons of Pandu indicates disparity and shows that Dhritarastra did not accept the sons of his deceased brother Pandu as he did his own sons and this reveals his enmity towards them. Ksetra also means field of cultivation. Just as in a rice field there are unwanted grasses looking exactly like the rice paddy which must be uprooted. Similarly the use of the word dharma-ksetra is indicative that the unrighteous sons of Dhritarastra will also be uprooted. — Baladeva Vidyabhusana

APROPOS 'Laxman accorded state funeral: Maha govt to set up memorial' (ADC, January 28), it is indeed sad to lose such a legendary cartoonist who ruled in this country for several decades in 'The Times Of India', by producing excellent cartoons depicting the most appropriate topic of the day with his brilliant strokes, which were so self-expressive that they did not require any caption to explain. Laxman drew all kinds of cartoons depicting the utter deficiencies of the civic body, the politicians who used to be criticised for their funny political acts, the presidents, the prime ministers, the business men et al. Practically nobody and no subject was spared from his cartoon world. The 'Times Of India' should certainly open a gallery to exhibit these brilliant cartoons for the present generation to show his talents. The readers of the paper would cherish the memories of these cartoons which used to generate joy and make one laugh at the the start of the day. — Bikram Banerjea, via email

LIKE the late Uncle Pai (Anant Pai), editor of ‘Amar Chitra Katha’ and ‘Tinkle’ comics, RK Laxman was also a great personality. I used to love his cartoons. They were hilarious! His style of illustrating his cartoons was quite different from the others. May his soul rest in peace, and may he and his cartoons be remembered forever. I remember meeting him once during one of Uncle Pai’s quiz contests, when he was the chief guest. He was never proud and would mix freely with people, even with his

IN the sad demise of RK Laxman, the world has lost a very eminent cartoonist who endeared himself to the of masses across the globe, by his subtle and often hilarious cartoons. It is said that the wit makes fun of other people; the satirist makes fun of the world at large; the humourist makes fun of himself. It is also said that a person can only make others laugh if he is prepared to laugh at himself. The renowned RK Laxman was endowed with all the above qualities.

The fact that he could churn out remarkable cartoons day in and day out showed what a fertile imagination he had. All his cartoons encapsulated and epitomised various occurrences instances and happenings in a light hearted manner without being flippant or frivolous. May his soul rest in peace, and may he become a symbol for other cartoonists to follow. — Hemant Hemmady, Virar

THE institution of caricaturing has been silenced by the death of eminent cartoonist RK Laxman who passed away at the ripe old age of

94 years. He was a renowned caricaturist, a household name in our country. The winner of Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Magsaysay award, RK Laxman was a master in the world of cartooning with every recognition in this field. His iconic character the 'common man', which he created in 1957, was most loved among the masses. Cartoons bring smiles, but making people laugh is no easy task and readers saw his cartoons before they read other news in publications. RK Laxman may be no more but his work will be remembered and admired for centuries to come. Cartooning is a dying art and most newspapers have been ignoring it completely due to costly print media space but readers love them and here is hoping the same is revived in the fond memory of the 'uncommon' RK Laxman and his 'common man' character entering record books, if not there already. — SN Kabra, Goregaon

I am saddened by the demise of the king of cartoon RK Laxman. His cartoons were bold, creative and topical. Every morning for over three decades, the first thing I did was to see his front page cartoons in the 'Times of India'. If a picture is worth a thousand words his cartoons were worth many thousands of words. He, like the famous Tamil poet Saint Thiruvalluvar, had the knack of telling so many things in such few words. Some of his best cartoons come to mind: Road route to Kuwait via Air India Building – when Nariman Point came up. “Who says I am going abroad frequently. INDIA once again celebrates its Republic Day. President Obama gracing the 66th Republic Day function is indeed a milestone in the post-independence history of our country. India is in world news once again. For good reasons! IMF has painted a rosy picture of the Indian economy. World leaders and Nobel prize winning economists are showering praises on the dynamic leadership of Prime minister Narendra Modi. THE Republic Day was indeed a great occasion when our Prime Minister with his superb statesmanship skills in dealing with US President Obama, had made most of us Indians (except the envious discredited UPA ranks) really proud. But that euphoria was marred by the grossly stupid things done by some of those in the NDA's corridors of power. Kiran Bedi, though declared as the BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate, is a virtual nobody today. Therefore there was absolutely no reason for the NDA dispensation to deposit Kiran Bedi in the front row of the VIPs during the Republic Day parade. Any dignified person with some amount of decency would have felt embarrassed, but not Ms Bedi, who was found gloating over her undeserved positioning. The Chief Election Commissioner, a constitutional functionary was made to sit some five rows behind Bedi! The sensitivity of the Reds over the issue was amply demonstrated when they, in 2008, withdrew outside support to the then UPA I government over the same matter. Mass demonstrations, meetings, submission of memoranda to the government and seeking the backing of other opposition groups in the Parliament, should form the main thrust of their agitation programme. — Jorhat Singh, Kandivali

THE clinching of the bilateral agreement for the nuclear 123 deal between India and the USA is a feather in the cap of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His astute leadership and sharp political acumen has saved the deal from getting aborted. While the entire country would be happily welcoming the development, the only entities who would frown upon it would be the Indian comrades, for whom anything associated with the Western world is a taboo, and hence, deserves to be roundly condemned. — Arun Malankar, Santacruz

he Bombay High Court today rejected a public interest litigation which had sought prosecution of the former Maharashtra minister Narayan Rane and his son Nitesh Rane for 'anti-Gujarati' remarks. The division bench headed by Justice Naresh Patil rejected the PIL after the government lawyer said that Rane and his son cannot be prose-

cuted for the remarks. Additional government pleader Hiten Venegoankar said the suburban Khar police recorded the statement of petitioner Bhagwanji Rayani and transferred the case to state CID. But the CID eventually closed the probe as no offence under section 153 (promoting enmity between different groups) of the Indian Penal Code was made out, he said. Nitesh Rane had, last year, in a tweet, taken exception to the Gujarati community in Mumbai rooting for Narendra Modi, and said it should move back to Gujarat if it admired Modi – then the Gujarat Chief Minister – so much. As it triggered a controversy, Narayan Rane, a senior state Congress leader, clarified that his son was only talking about those Gujaratis who admired Gujarat more than Maharashtra.

n what is being seen as a bawdy way of celebrating Republic Day, the Mira Bhayandar unit of the Republican Party of India (RPI) led by district president Devendra Shelekar orgainsed a dance show in Mira Road on Monday. The event which started off as Samvidhan Gaurav Din (Constitution Dignity Day) turned into a strange show with dancers performing to raunchy songs. The video footage of the dance show with the picture of the Father of the Indian Constitution Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and RPI President Ramdas Athavalev in the background (stage banner) has sparked off a controversy with several intellectuals condemning the incident. However, terming the event as a cultural show which he has been organising for the past 14 years, Shelekar finds nothing wrong in it.

As the government made a rule for installing such cameras at public hospitals, to avoid cases of kidnapping, cameras are being installed at Chhaya Hospital too. As it is always noticed after the installations of CCTV cameras, due to no proper maintenance, these cameras become dysfunctional. Therefore the council has also passed a budget of Rs 5 lakhs annually for the maintenance of these cameras. The council will set up a control room at Ambernath East police station to monitor and record the footage and take timely action in case of any emergency.

For, it has an entry dated June 10, 1998, which is a bit unconventional: it's a cartoon. RK Laxman, the legendary cartoonist who passed away in Pune two days ago, was the guest at the Deolali camp that day. He gave a demonstration of cartoon-drawing during the visit, and had his audience in splits during the interaction with officers and their wives, said an Army press release here which paid rich tributes to the late cartoonist. Award season is back! While the events continue to pour in, we’re still lusting over the sensational trends that were showcased at The Golden Globe Awards, which were held earlier this month. While finding identical red-carpet isn’t always possible, Rhea Dhanbhoora & Shirley Mistry bring you a host of Golden Globe inspired options to choose from if you are planning on channelling a little Hollywood glam #1: seeing red

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, 2015

#2: OneshOulder Amal Clooney is the latest of red carpet royalty to rock a beautiful one-shoulder gown, but unless you’re attending a black-tie event, her gown and gloves look would be a bit out of place. Amy Adams however, channelled the oneshoulder style perfectly with her pastel-hued, slightly ruched top dress. We couldn’t find a style and colour that mimicked the gown perfectly, but we found some pretty close options for you.

The colour of love was a huge trend during this year’s award season and it was sported in a variety of ways — long sleeves, strapless gowns, offshoulder styles, embellished and cut-out. From Dame Helen Mirren to Viola Davis, the stars matched the red carpet with élan. Our favourite though, is the gorgeous, strapless red dress that was worn by American Horror Story star, Sarah Paulson. It’s a great dress to wear anywhere! >> The perfect match would be this beautiful strapless gown (`12,999) from Bebe.

>> For a more streamlined, one-shoulder dress, pick up this embellished shoulder look from SVA by Sonam & Paras Modi (`20,800), available on Exclusively.in

>> To sport almost the same style, pick this blue dress from Avirate (`2,520), which is available on Myntra.com

>> If strapless is not your style, pick this Gauri and Nainika high-neck dress (`1,86,000) to rock the trend.

#3: green queen

#4: Yellow Fellow

While younger stars sport strapless gowns, oneshoulder styles and sexy, cleavage baring outfits, after a certain age, you’re going to want to learn how to look glamorous without looking over-thetop — and we think Judith Light really nailed it in this elegant green gown.

While reds and whites were the stars of the night, don’t forget how well yellow did. The bright colour was sported in different canary hues by stars such as Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Naomi Watts, Leslie Mann and even Emily Ratajkowski, who wowed in this gorgeous gown. Here are our picks to mimic the hues and style. >> We love the muted colour worn by Mrs. Tatum as well as the easy one-shoulder style Emily that rocks, so we’ve picked this soft lemon gown (`3,250) from Trendy Divva, which offers a good mix of both.

>> This is a very easy trend to wear, even if you’re looking for a more casual, day look. We’ve picked this dress because of the brilliant way it combines the deep green, long sleeved trend with another Golden Globe trend that we love — the belted look that was sported by Salma Hayek. Pick up the gorgeous dress (`1,675) from Closet Diaries.

>> Gauri and Nainika’s spring collection has to sport a little of everyone’s favourite spring shade, so it’s no surprise that Emily’s deep yellow hue features heavily on this gown (`1,24,000). The neckline helps you combine the yellow trend with the plunge neck trend that featured heavily on the red carpet as well.

#5: Metallic sparkle If we’re talking about red carpet looks, a little sparkle is always on the horizon. This year’s Golden Globes saw Dakota Johnson, Reese Witherspoon and Julianne Moore shimmy down the red carpet in their bejewelled, sparkly ensembles, but the dress that caught our fancy, was this metallic gown worn by Uzo Aduba, from Orange Is The New Black. The maroon layer under the sequins contrasted the gun-metal embellished layer beautifully, and although we couldn’t find an exact replica, these glittery gowns still make for worthy options.

>> While the silver dress alongside is upbeat and youthful, this option by Dhara Vora, from Le Box (price on request), is more grown-up, making it ideal for formal events. Even though it is quite glittery and sparkly, the dull finish of the sequins ensures that you won’t look like a disco ball.

>> This Komal Sood creation (`33,000) is an edgy take on the red carpet look. We are smitten by the mirror work on the bust and the muted tone of the flowy gown complements this look beautifully.

>> For a straight-up silver gown, look no further than this sheath maxi dress, which is available at www.stylista.com (`3,570). Pair it with a sleek low ponytail, like the one sported by Lorde (turn to pages 16/17 to create it), and rest assured that all eyes will be on you. We love how the thighhigh slit on this outfit adds to the Hollywood charm.

#6: Muted Musings While the yellows, blues and greens certainly had their moment at the Golden Globes red carpet this year, muted shades of taupe, slate grey, blush pink and dusty rose were a big hit too. Anna Kendrick and Rosamund Pike pulled off their muted gowns with élan, but we can’t stop lusting over Kate Beckinsale’s muted mauve-grey gown. A sparkly bodice ensured that she didn’t look washed out and her styling was spot on as well. Take a look at the options that we picked to mimic the picture perfect look.

>> For an affordable option, pick up this gown from www.shopnineteen.co m (`959). The bodice is a shimmery fabric, instead of being heavily embellished, making it more wearable. The wispy, blush pink skirt makes it perfect to wear to a lazy brunch.

Make a SplaSh Bollywood actress Esha Gupta is known for her impeccable sense of style, and is someone who can wear the most sartorial outfits and look effortlessly fashionable. Shirley Mistry speaks to her about her association with the fashion brand, Splash and all things stylish

Tell us about your style association with Splash. Splash has an eye for the latest global trends and their clothes translate this into everyday style. As their brand ambassador, I will be representing the brand in India, and will be appearing in their print advertising, public relations efforts and online properties. Considering the fact that there are several fashion houses that exist today, why did you choose to associate yourself with Splash? Splash is an iconic, globally recognised brand that is known to be on par with international fashion trends. Their collections reflect my fashion sensibilities. Splash has been instrumental in transforming the fashion scene in India, and I look forward to adding impetus to their efforts. What are five must-have pieces in your wardrobe? A long-sleeved, high-neck T-shirt, a pair of acid wash denims or cigarette pants, A-line or pencil skirts, a trapeze dress, oversized tops and crop tops.

>> Esha recently became the brand ambassador of fashion label, Splash

You’re often featured in magazines and fashion blogs as a celebrity who is extremely stylish and well turned out. What are your go-to looks for a casual day out, as well as for a night out? Casual outfits keep you comfortable. Colours such as orient blue, deep red, burnt orange, peach and wine are my picks for the season. I love wearing crop tops, pianafores, dungrees, maxi dresses, cables, cardigans, bomber jackets, dolman

The debuTanT auThor Tell us a little bit about the idea behind your novel He Fixed the Match, She Fixed Him. This novel is about the love-hate relationship between a couple who is tethered together. Their past saw them trying to quell a vendetta, but love had its own plans. The story attempts to send across the message that if you believe in love and its healing powers, even two enemies can make it through.

You have a background in IT and work at Tata Consultancy Services. What prompted you to consider writing a book? Corporate people are often considered to be boring and noncreative. On the contrary, we are quite imaginative — after all, we are in the business of selling ideas. We just don’t have enough time to pamper our alter-egos. But, when we do find time, we can create wonders. Some of us have done exactly that and I hope to join the list as well. Publishing a book in today’s day and age is full of challenges. Did you face any hardships? I definitely wouldn’t say that it has been easy. Publishers are reluctant to invest in new authors, and even when they do, authors end up waiting for years. But, a good story coupled with rock-solid determination will make it through, come what may. My book was turned down by several publishers, before it was finally accepted by three. I’m fortunate that He Fixed the Match, She Fixed Him is being received warmly by readers and book critics. So, as far as my experience with publishing goes, it has

They are stylish but at the same time don’t compromise on comfort. For a night out, dresses are always at the top of my list. I pair them with long earrings to add a touch of sparkle. Tell us about a few trends that you love. I am currently obsessed with patchwork fur vests, maxi dresses and dolman sleeves. When picked in colours such as orient blue, deep red and burnt orange,

While choosing jewellery, pick bright pieces or ones with a glittery texture. My favourites include metallic accessories and oversized jewellery from Splash, which are sure to be a hot trend this season.

been a happy one. However, getting your book published is just half the battle; the bigger challenge is to convince seasoned readers to read a debutant author’s book. What tips would you give budding authors who want to publish a book of their own? It’s important to pen down stories that are fresh and interesting. Make a pledge to spread smiles and to make the world a happier place. Commercial success is important, but it shouldn’t be the sole purpose. It’s crucial to keep your faith intact when you face rejection — success is even sweeter when it’s hard-earned. Remember not to rely on only one publisher and make sure to reach out to every publishing house that handles books of the genre that you write. You manage your family life and your professional life, and you still manage to find the time to write. What tips would you give to women who’d like to achieve a healthy balance between different aspects of life? It all begins with setting your priorities straight and focussing on issues that matter the most. Our time is withered away over insignificant issues, so stay positive and filter out negative energy. What’s your next book going to be about? I’ve almost penned it down and have been discussing it with close friends and family. It’s another love story with a twist — that is all I can reveal at the moment.

Hair

This is one of Reese’s favourite styles and when you see how good it looks on her, you can imagine why. Take a look at how Daniel would style it to get the same look: n Prep your hair by washing it (Daniel uses the TRESemmé Smooth and Shine Range) and create a centre or deep side part. n Apply mousse from the middle to the ends of your hair in order to lock in the moisture and secure the wavy texture. n Use a hair clip to separate the lower section before you start curling. n Wrap small sections of your hair around a clipless curling iron, keeping it away from your face. Hold for five seconds, then release to form a soft ringlet. Repeat this process around the rest of your head. n While the curls cool, prep the crown of your head by combing in some mousse. Spritz hairspray on top for a wet look. n Remove the hair clips and gently brush your hair out into loose waves and set the style with a spritz of hairspray.

This is a look that several stars sported on the red carpet, but we loved how ethereal and pretty Emily looked with hers. Daniel tells us how to get the look: n Prep your hair by washing it (he uses the TRESemmé Hair Spa Rejuvenation Range) with shampoo and then applying massage-able conditioner. n Part your hair from the middle in two sections. n Braid both sections into pigtail braids. n Wrap both the side-braids at the top of your head, secure them with pins and voila, your look is ready!

Kate Hudson’s low Knot

Seeing Lorde on the red carpet was enough of a treat, especially because of her chic, black getup. But, her newly straightened hair definitely added to the excitement. Her low ponytail was complimented by a deep side part. Daniel shows you how to rock this youthful style: n Prep your hair by washing it with good (Daniel uses the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Range) hair products. n Blow dry your hair straight, using a soft paddle brush. n Create a deep part down the side and then section your hair in two parts, separating it across the back of the head, from ear to ear. n Gently tease the lower section along the horizontal line between your ears. n Loosely pull your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck. Work on the ponytail with a flat iron to give it a polished look. n Secure it with an elastic band and finish with a long, flat hair band.

Forget stiff, high buns, and try out Kate Hudson’s favourite style to nail your red carpet look. She prefers a bun that is closer to the nape of her neck, and always looks smashing in it. Daniel tells us how to create it: n Prep your hair (he uses TRESemmé Hair Spa Rejuvenation range) with shampoo and then apply a massage-able conditioner. n Apply an ample amount of gel/wax to your hair and then create a middle parting, giving your head a clean look. n Create a tight, low ponytail and divide the rest of your hair into three parts n Twist the three partings counterclockwise and roll them into a bun. n Twist the ponytail into the bun, and wrap it tightly around the base. n Secure the knot with hairpins and your hair is set for the red carpet!

vlcc gold Facial Kit

This single-use facial kit promises to give you the luxury and convenience of getting a facial, without having to visit a salon. There are several kits that offer the same luxury, and most of them do work. So, I didn’t think twice when I opened the VLCC Gold Facial Kit to try it. There’s a free bleach in the box (the biggest addition to the kit) and the rest are small sachets; containing a gold scrub, a peel-off mask, gold gel and gold cream. The four-step kit seems easy enough to use and the scrub left my skin soft, smooth and glowing, so I was quite excited to see what the peel-off mask would offer up. Remember to let it dry completely, because it’s extremely sticky. Getting it out of the packet and on to your face is hard enough. Once you peel it off, remnants of yellow remain on your skin (which will be tinged with yellow — much to my despair!). The gel and cream are decent additions, but don’t do much to salvage the situation. While you do get a glow, it’s more or less the same as smearing turmeric over your face and waiting for it to reduce a tan. It makes your skin feel soft and smooth — and that’s it’s only saving grace. price `235 for a single use where Retail outlets across the city rating **

We know that metallic is in, but Mughda’s skirt is a little too shimmery for our liking. The bodice is pretty and the neckline suits her slender frame. The heavy work on the bodice would have shone better if the skirt of the dress was a little more muted. Her hairstyle is a little too severe, but we’re glad her earrings didn’t take away from the pretty makeup she has on.

There’s nothing that really stands out about this dress, but the colour is bang on trend and we love how the sweatheart neckline flatters her figure. It’s a little over-pleated for our tastes, but we love how the neckline is the focus due to the lack of a necklace. Her hair is so-so, but we’re fans of the subtle makeup and statement earrings that she’s rocking through the look.

Tanisha’s attempt to rock the Grecian goddess look is a mix of hits and misses for us. Her makeup and hair misses the mark (she should have taken a hint from Emily Blunt’s brilliant attempt at the same trend) but we’ve got no bone to pick with this pretty dress. We would have picked a different clutch and skipped the neckpiece, but it adds a little glam to the look, so we’re not completely against it.

The first thing that attracted us to this outfit was how similar it looks to a shift dress — and we love shift dresses! The barely there straps accentuate her well-shaped shoulders and the neckline is just perfect. It would have done better if it was an inch or two shorter, but the pretty colour, subtle hints of gold and well-matched accessories and makeup make this look a winner.

Sophie has a pretty enviable figure and that’s most apparent with this dress. The shade of white is a bit stark, but the fit is perfect — everything from the one-shoulder to the mermaid skirt flatters her figure and although we wouldn’t normally pick a design like this, the red motifs add a much-needed pop of colour. Her makeup is a bit too heavy handed though and ruins the ethereal look.

Jokes apart, your best bet is to give her a tried and tested piece of advice — if you don’t make the move now, you won’t ever make it. Not only will this actually help her, it will also stop her from coming to you with random ideas and instead, make her focus on doing something about it. If you find that this doesn’t work, tell her that while you’d love to help, you can’t really suggest something because you are neither an expert, nor do you know her well enough, and so, she should consult a career counsellor. aking a good impression on your first day at a new job is crucial. Your interviewer may have been impressed and the HR department might consider you to be courteous and professional, but how your co-workers, seniors and office staff see you, on how you conduct yourself on your first day. So, check out our list of dos and don’ts to ensure that everything goes smoothly on your first day.

n

Do: Dress smartly

n

One of the biggest mistakes that you can make on your first day is to be rude to errand boys or the staff that handles various odds and ends. Even if you think that they aren’t doing their job well, being cold towards them will make your colleagues think of you as someone with too many airs — and believe us when we say that they will be watching. n

Don’t: Flirt, or encourage flirting Irrespective of what your new company’s policy on dating at work is, don’t get flirty with your handsome coworker, whom you’re bound to notice on your first day. Try and resist temptation. Similarly, if you notice a colleague trying to flirt with you, make sure that you’re not returning his advances in any way. Doing so will give out the worst possible first impression.

n

Do: meet your boss

Remember this simple rule — when it comes to your first day at work, you can never be too professionally dressed. Even if the dresscode is casual, stick to semi-formals until you have a basic idea of what is acceptable and what isn’t. If you dress too casually, you might come across as too laid-back. A white blouse, black trousers, kitten heels and a simple jacket is a safe outfit choice. n

Don’t: complain too much Your problems might be genuine and your concerns may stem from noble intentions, but you could end up coming across as difficult. It’s alright to ask your neighbour or a member of the staff when you need something such as a tissue. But, if all you’re going to do is come back to your desk, grumbling about how there were no tissues in the bathroom, your negative attitude is not going to go down well with others.

Do: be nice to the office staff

It is important to meet with your boss to discuss the work that you’re expected to handle. Don’t assume that since you discussed your job profile at the interview, you don’t need to discuss it. Going up to your boss and asking for work not only shows initiative, it also helps create a good first impression. n

Don’t: Be weekend buddies...yet. It is one thing to ask your colleagues out for post-work coffee so that you can get

to know them better, but don’t be overfriendly and invite them to the raucous party that you’re planning with your friends. While it won’t negatively impact how your colleagues perceive you, but it is always a good idea to come across as an employee who respects boundaries. n

Do: Find out about the work that the company does On your first day, you probably won’t have much work to do. However, this doesn’t mean that you should spend the entire day browsing through shopping websites or scrolling through your social media feed. Spend time talking to colleagues who are free and find out about the work, as well as the office culture. You can even head to the records room and go over the past work that your company has done. Apart from sending out the message that you are a conscientious worker, this will give you a better understanding your company and will help you in the days to come.

n

Don’t: Ask about when you can leave. As we mentioned earlier, you probably won’t have a lot of work to do and so, you might feel a little anxious to leave as soon as you can. However, it is important that you don’t seem as though you’re itching to leave. Don’t make any after-work plans on your first day and wait for your supervisor to tell you when you can leave.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, 2015

Your heart might skip a beat at the notification of an incoming text, only to sink in disappointment at your partner’s lousy attempt to start a conversation. But, before you jump to conclusions, take a look at what some common texts that guys send actually mean, says Sara Shah

nlike women, men are not known for their conversation skills. In fact, most of you will be familiar with the sinking feeling that you get when you send a long, heartfelt text to your partner, only to receive a one-word reply in return. This annoying habit not only leaves you feeling like a fool, it can also confuse you about his feelings for you. And, the fact that you can’t see your partner’s facial expressions and understand what he really means, makes it even more difficult to decipher what he is trying to tell you. Most of the time, what he says is actually what he really means, but you could also be misreading his texts. Take a look at a few typical texts to see whether you’re getting things right.

« sos: solve our situation! Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on...

I was recently hired by a very established, old-school style firm. The person who I was hired to replace had been with them for his entire career and had retired for health reasons... So, when he got his gold watch, I got his job... and Urscillia, his 50-something secretary, who is like a caricature of an old movie secretary.

>> Men usually prefer to get to the point while texting

Hello dearie! Cup of tea?

All face powder, lipstick and synthetic colour coordinated ‘business’ suits. She even takes notes in proper short-hand! I was really quite amused by her. She is also very efficient and has kept up with the times in most ways. Then, her personality began to shine through... Oh! Late again? I was just telling Mr. L you would be in any minute!

The SinGleT So, you just sent a text message that could rival a novel, telling him how much you love him and how great things are going, and he responds with an “Ok,” “Yes” or “Sure.” Don’t wallow in misery just yet. There are several reasons why a guy responds with a single word. Men usually like to get to the point, especially when they’re texting. He may feel the same way about you, but he probably thinks it isn’t necessary to write it down. So, get straight to the point the next time and you will save yourself the grief. Remember that he might also be caught up with something. Men prefer handling one task at a time and he probably has all his focus pooled into doing something else. Either this, or he may actually not be interested in you. If it is the latter, we suggest moving on.

coffee later and he says he’ll have to take a rain check. So, you ask if he’d like to meet tomorrow, or the day after instead. And, by the time you reach the next question, he’s gone. You’re probably not going to get a response out of him any time soon, because he is either too busy to pick up his phone or he’s just cooking up ways to

say no. Or, he may reply later, accepting your invitation. Our point is, don’t drive yourself crazy, contemplating whether he’s interested or not — if he is, he will reply, If not, well... then he won’t. However, if you’re sure that he’s pulling a disappearing act, we suggest moving on.

The CoMpliMenT “Nobody can look as good as you do in that dress.” — does this sound familiar? Who doesn’t like receiving a compliment? However, a guy who pays over-the-top compliments has clearly mastered the art of smooth-talking. You might feel elated that he singled you out from all other women in the room, but let’s come back down to earth and consider the sincerity of his words. When his compliments seem too good to be true, you should bear in mind that it may be his go-to line to impress women all the time. Unless of course, you’ve been together for a while.

The BooTy Call It’s past 2am and he texts you, asking you to come over. Whether you want to or not is your decision. But, understand that when a guy texts you at odd hours, asking you to come over to his place to hang out, it is clearly a call for more than just coffee. Such men usually don’t have much respect for your time, and are just looking for some no-strings attached fun. If you have no qualms about this, by all means, go ahead. Just don’t expect him to pull out a chair for you, or even ask you out on a date afterwards.

The DouBle TexTer You read his text earlier in the day, but got too caught up to reply. Two hours later, you find 20 messages and 10 missed calls from him, asking if you are alive. This is your signal to bail at the first chance you get. Head for the door, before you find him stuck to you like a wad of chewing gum.

The DiSappearinG aCT You ask him whether he wants to meet for

« Dear Grace, i have a problem... Dear Grace, A couple of months ago, I was introduced to a guy through a mutual friend and we really hit it off. Over the course of three weeks and a series of coffee and dinner dates, I realised that I really liked him. But, since I didn’t want to give him the idea that I’m really into him, I tried to limit the number of texts and calls that we exchanged and even turned down a few dates. Now, he seems to have stopped

reaching out to me completely. How do I undo the damage? — Mira Dharia, Kalyan Dear Mira, We know how important it is for you to avoid coming across as eager or desperate, especially when you meet a potential partner, and taking things slow is the best way to do that. However, you need to ensure that in your attempt to play hard-to-

get, you do not end up coming across as uninterested — which is exactly what this guy seems to have gathered. If he hasn’t already found someone else, there is no harm in picking up the phone right now and scheduling a date. The worst thing that could happen is that he will turn you down. If he is up for it, go for the date, and next time around, try not to hold back too much. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in

rinagar: Army today paid glowing tributes to Colonel M N Rai, who died fighting militants in Jammu and Kashmir, recalling his efforts to reach out to youths in the militancy-hit region and said such sacrifice only strengthens its resolve to fight elements inimical to peace. "Col Rai always led from the front in multiple operations that he carried out in 2014 and also in 2015. He combined bravery with compassion and people in Tral knew him very well for his several initiatives," General Officer Commanding of the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps Lt Gen Subrata Saha told reporters after the wreath laying ceremony at Badami Bagh Cantonment here. "The supreme sacrifice of the brave men only strengthens our re-

solve to fight all elements inimical to security of Kashmir," he said as friends and colleagues recalled the contribution of Rai, one of the senior-most officers to be killed in last one year. Rai (39), commanding officer of 42 Rashtriya Rifles, and head constable Sanjeev Kumar Singh Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police were killed during the encounter in Tral in Pulawama district yesterday, in which two militants were also gunned down. Saha said once the house where the militants were hiding was cordoned off, the father and brother of one of the terrorists approached Rai claiming that the ultra wanted to surrender. But even as Rai gave

Swaraj to travel to China this Saturday Barack Obama's three-day visit here, Swaraj will "discuss bilateral, regional and global issues of concern to both sides" with her Chinese counterpart, MEA said in a statement here today. The two sides will also explore the possibility of a visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this year. Both Chinese President Xi Jinping and Wang had visited India last year immediately after the installation of the Modi government. According to officials, during the "substantive" visit, the two sides will focus on entire gamut of bilateral ties which will include cooperation in the key area of trade. The minister will also attend the Sushma Swaraj RIC meeting with her Chinese and Russian counterparts. The RIC ew Delhi: External Affairs Min- meeting was earlier scheduled to ister Sushma Swaraj will travel take place in August but Swaraj canto China on a four-day visit starting celled her travel which was to take Saturday during which she will hold place just ahead of Modi's visit to talks with her Chinese counterpart Japan. them an opportunity to do so, the militants came out of the house firing indiscriminately leading to the gunbattle. The officer's swift actions prevented many civilian casualties during the operation, Saha said and noted that Rai had taken "a number of initiatives for the positive engagement of youth like organising cricket and football tournaments". "Clearly under his leadership, we could say that the narrative in Tral was changing. He earned the admiration of all the administration for his meticulous planning and we have seen how Tral turned out to vote," Lt Gen Saha said. Rai was conferred the Yudh Seva medal on the eve of Republic Day for outstanding contribution in

planning and conduct of operations including a gun battle with militants in south Kashmir last year. Saha said the security in Kashmir Valley was being ensured with a "colossal effort" by the army and added it was a collective responsibility of all the concerned agencies to keep the local youth away from militancy. Col Rai's body is being flown to Delhi today and it will be kept at the Delhi cantonment crematorium. His last rites will take place tomorrow. Top officers of the army and other security agencies were present here to pay tributes to the slain officer. Want to resolve all issues with China honestly: Rajnath K

anpur: India today said it has "honest intentions" for an amicable resolution of the border dispute with China and has asked it to come forward to end the differences. "There is a perceptional difference along the Sino-Indian border. China says here is the border. We say no, here is the border. We have been trying to resolve the border problem. China should come forward. India wants a peaceful resolution of all disputes," Home Minister Rajnath Singh said here after inaugurating a battalion camp of border guarding force ITBP here. Singh, who flew down from Delhi for the event, said, India never had any territorial ambitions and his government wants resolution of "perceptional differences" on this frontier. "We are not expansionist. India's history says that we have never been expansionist. We have never attacked any country. We are worshippers of peace. China should understand this. We want to resolve all issues with honesty (imaandari ke saath)," he said. The Home Minister said his ministry has already approved 35

Rajnath Singh new border posts for the troops of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police force, the designated security force at this frontier. Twenty-two border posts are going to function soon while on 13 others works is on, he said. He said dedicated air connectivity has "already" been given to the ITBP in December last year and for enhanced mobility of the troops, work is on at 27 priority roads out of the 34 sanctioned by MHA.

Cong prepares to take on govt in Parliament on N deal issue N

ew Delhi: The issue of operationalising the Indo-US civil nuclear deal will echo in Parliament when Budget session begins on February 23 as Congress plans to ask the Government to explain the assurances it has given during Barack Obama's visit for resolving the logjam. The party at the same time made it clear that it was not opposing the finalisation of the agreement as

the "Indo-US nuclear deal was scripted by the UPA, which the BJP then opposed but finally adopted". "Government must inform Parliament about the assurances on the commercial component of the agreement it reached, the financial liability clause and the compensation part. We do not have the fineprint of the assurances given as yet. "They have kept it vague

so far. Government has not shared the details and it must place them before Parliament," Deputy Leader of Congress in Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma told PTI. Sharma at the same time said that his party was not opposing the agreement as such as the Indo-US nuclear deal was UPA's baby. India and the US reached an understanding on resolving the logjam in implementing the landmark civil

nuclear deal on January 25, which was announced jointly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the US President Obama here. They reached the "breakthrough" on the stalled civil nuclear agreement by agreeing on commercial cooperation. Congress has so far reacted cautiously to the development, saying it would have to see the fine print on whether Modi has ad-

dressed issues raised by the US within India's legal framework and sought details as to how the difficulties were overcome. Some party functionaries speaking on the condition of anonymity said that Congress members will raise the issue in both Houses when the Budget session begins and will ask the government to inform Parliament of the assurances that have been given.

After Touching Record High, Nifty Ends Flat NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Thursday (January 29, 2015) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose marginally on Wednesday (January 28, 2015) a net 3.80 points (0.04%) and closed at the 8914 point level. The market opened down at the 8902 points level. It then turned into a range bound movement until 11.05 a.m. The index then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 8985 points level at 12.34 p.m. It then declined sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 8874 points level at 2.38 p.m. The index then bounced back into the green and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session, moved in a range of 11 points and closed above the psychologically important 8900 points level for the second consecutive session. Sentiment was mixed and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 26 were losers, 23 were gainers while 1 remained unchanged. Substantial buying was witnessed in consumer durables and oil & gas stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 7.89%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 528 were gainers, 959 were losers and 35 remained unchanged. Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined in the overbought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator has dropped below the slow D line (negative and a sell signal). However, such signals are considered invalid in the over-bought zone.

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now turned flat (positive if it rises). MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

Is above its 200-day average (at 7806) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a neutral bias. Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 8608 points level. The next support is at the 8509 points level.

Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 8989 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 8924 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 8864. Support (2) = 8813. Resistance (1) = 8975. Resistance (2) = 9035. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a doji pattern. This indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising and also positively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. Both these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further upmove unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are diverging (positive if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is flat. No signal here. The much-delayed Foreign Trade Policy (FTP), which will roll out steps to boost exports, is expected to be unveiled soon, Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said yesterday."It has to be happening sooner," Sitharaman said when asked about the expected time for announcement of the FTP. The announcement of the FTP (2014-19) has been delayed as ministries of commerce and finance are yet to take the final call on granting tax incentives for export promotion schemes. The foreign trade policy, which is usually announced in April, provides guidelines for enhancing exports with the overall objective of pushing economic growth and generating employment. Under the policy, the government gives fiscal incentives to exporters under different promotion schemes such as Market Access Initiative, Marketing Development Assistance, Vishesh Krishi and Gram Udyog Yojana, Focus Market Scheme, Focus Product Scheme and Market Linked Focus Products Scrip. The Finance Ministry has to allocate funds for these schemes. Exporters have already raised concerns over the delay in announcement of the FTP. Ten months of the current fiscal are already over.

T

he government will sell a stake in state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) this fiscal even though falling global oil prices pose a challenge, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said yesterday. The government was to sell 5 % of its stake in the country's biggest oil and gas producer ONGC to raise Rs 17,000-18,000 crore. But the double impact of tumbling global oil prices and the rising

subsidy burden has left the ONGC stock battered. Its share has slipped from Rs 472 in June last year to Rs 352.90 (at 1215 hrs today). At current price, the government will get about Rs 15,000 crore. "We will factor in market conditions before disinvestment," Pradhan told reporters on the sidelines of the India Energy Congress in New Delhi. Pradhan said the stake sale in ONGC was very much on the list of disinvestment candidates for current fiscal. While slumping oil prices make prospects of stake sale in ONGC

10% Stake Sale In CIL Tomorrow The government will sell up to 10% stake in the blue chip Coal India Ltd (CIL) through offer for sale on Friday and is expected to mop up around Rs 24,000 crore at current market price."The (CIL share) sale shall...Commence on January 30 and shall close on the same date at 3.30 pm," CIL said a stock exchange filing. The offer will have 20% reservation for re-

tail investors. The floor price for the stake sale would be announced today after the close of market hours. Shares of CIL closed at Rs 384.05, up 0.27% over previous close on the BSE. The government will sell over 31.58 crore shares through an offer for sale (OFS) with an option to sell an additional 5% stake.

grimmer, the government has linedup four other state-run firms – Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL), National Aluminium (Nalco), and Dredging Corporation (DCIL) for disinvestment this fiscal. It plans to sell a 10 % stake in IOC as well as Nalco, and 5 % stake each in BHEL and DCIL. The government, he said, was reworking the subsidy sharing formula. "The oil price pose a challenge (for ONGC)," he said. Upstream oil producers ONGC and Oil India Ltd made good nearly half of the revenue loss or under-recoveries that fuel retailers incurred on selling cooking fuel at government controlled rates. T h i s subsidy contribution is by way of discount on crude oil they sold to the downstream firms and it was capped at USD 56 per barrel in 2013. But with global oil prices tumbling to five year low of less than USD 50 per barrel, 2009, the continuation of the subsidy-sharing formula for remaining period of this fiscal would mean that ONGC will not just have to sell crude oil to refiners like IOC for free but also pay another USD 6 per barrel from its pocket.

Base Year Revision To Up Economy To Rs 111 Trn In FY14 By A Business Reporter

T

he revision in base year of India's national accounts will increase the size of the economy to Rs 111.7 trillion in FY14, India Ratings (Ind-Ra) said yesterday. The size of the Indian economy was at about Rs 93.89 trillion in 2012-13. A base year change is a regular and methodological issue not limited to India only and almost all countries revise the base year of their national accounts. "Ind-Ra expects the size of the Indian economy to increase 6% to Rs 111.7 trillion (USD 1.8 trillion) in FY14 from the earlier estimate with the change of base to FY12," the ratings firm said

in a release. It expects India's fiscal deficit to decline to about 4.3% of the GDP (from 4.6% earlier) in FY14. Also, the current account deficit (CAD) is likely to fall to 1.6% of the GDP (from 1.7%) as a result. "The agency further expects the Indian economy to become a USD 3 trillion by FY 2019-20 with the change in base to FY12. On FY05 base, this would have happened a year later that is in FY21," it said. With a view to present a more realistic picture of the economy, the government plans to release a new series of national accounts with 2011-12 as base year for computing the economic growth rate. he New textile policy is almost ready and it is expected to be announced immediately after Union Budget, said Kiran Soni Gupta, Textile Commissioner. She made this announcement while inaugurating The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI)’s 60th National Garment Fair yesterday at Bombay Exhibition Centre. Gupta stated that 61 Textile Parks have been sanctioned out of which 55 Textile Parks are presently operating. Further 13 Textile Parks are under consideration. Some of the Textile Parks, like the one at Vishakhapattanam & Coimbatore have shown excellent performance. Technical Textiles have very bright future. There has been good demand with good scope for the industry to expand the production capacity, she said. She further

informed that Government has been promoting North-East region with focus on agro-textiles and geotextiles. Rahul Mehta, President of The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) & Chairman of International Apparel Federation stated that in the year 2014-15, the growth rate of domestic garment market was 10 to 12%, while the growth rate of export market would be 18 to 20%. Ashok Shah, Chairman of Fair Sub-committee of CMAI stated that next 61st National Garment Fair will be held from 29th June to 1st July 2015. Incidentally, the B2B Fair has 260 stalls displaying over 300 brands of summer collection. It covers men’s wear, women wear, kids wear, ethnic wear, intimate wear etc. A footfall of 20,000 trade visitors are expected during the fair. The Fair would remain open till today.

recommended changing the base year of National Accounts Statistics every five years. According to Ind-Ra, the base year should be changed frequently in view of fast-changing economic structure as well as to update or estimate national accounts on the basis of latest available data. However, the agency does not expect the change in base year to result in any significant change in GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth rate. The base year change is in line with the system of national accounts and the internationally agreed standard set of recommendations to compile measures of economic activity in accordance with strict accounting conventions based on economic principles.

However, the actor is now set to return to the tube with the show inspired by Mahesh Bhatt’s flick 'Daddy' starring Pooja Bhatt and Anupam Kher. If sources are to be believed, Ram’s character will be loosely based on the character of Daddy played by Kher.

Fruitful gesture

Actress Divyanka Tripathi is used to receiving numerous gifts from fans and friends on her birthday but she was in for a surprise when she got oranges as a gift. I was quite overwhelmed when recently actor Neil Mawani brought oranges for her as a gift from Nagpur. Divyanka says, “It was a sweet gesture by Neil when he brought oranges for me. Oranges are good for health and skin both. It really takes a lot of effort to carry a box of oranges all the way from Nagpur. People keep getting things like chocolates and other stuff but receiving fruits was a different feeling all together.”

Enterprising actor

Actor Shantanu Maheshwari who was last seen on the very popular youth oriented show 'Dil Dosti Dance' is the only TV actor to have the privilege to have his own merchandise. Everything from pillows to bookmarks, tshirts and mouse pads are available for Shantanu’s fans to purchase from www.yourgenie.in. Quotes which Shantanu believes in, his love for dance, candid photographs of Shantanu, etc have all been incorporated in creating interesting and appealing merchandise for Shantanu’s fans. Speaking about the merchandise Shantanu says, “It’s a great honour and I was very excited when I heard about Teen Sensation India.”

Sucheta Pavshe Khanna is popular for her character in SAB TV’s comic serial 'Lapataganj'. She has also acted in movies like 'Yamla Pagla Deewana 2'. Now she will be seen in the SAB TV show ‘Peterson Hill’ and we chatted with the beautiful lady about her new show

SUCHETA PLAYS By Sandeep Hattangadi

So is this role an offshoot of your other popular show ‘Lapatagaanj’? No. Not at all. Lapataganj was an in-the-face kind of comedy whereas this show has understated comedy with only simple people as characters.

What is your role in the show? Rohit Roy will be seen enacting the role of Kishore Chadha who by profession is the station master of Peterson Hill, a man with a golden heart, a complete family person who believes in the simplicities of life. Down to earth by nature, Kishore believes in doing good deeds in favour of mankind. The station master is married to the most ideal woman, Pinky Chadda, played by me. Pinky Chadda is very happy with her simple life and is proud of her husband’s morals. Peterson Hill is a hearty humorous family entertainer. How was it like working with SAB TV again? I have had a wonderful working relationship with them and when they offered me this role I was more than pleased to accept the station master’s wife’s role. Also Rohit was someone I had worked with earlier and there was a comfort level and also the other bunch of co-actors were great to work with. You are always slotted in comic roles? Not really. I started off with serious shows but then reality comedy took off in a big way and I was a part of it and then I hosted and acted in a few comedy shows and then got roles like ‘Lapataganj’ which gave me a comic image. Who is your favourite comedian? I must say that Johnny Lever is my favorite

HOUSEWIFE actor for all seasons as he is not only a wonderful comedian but a great human being too and keeps me in splits whenever I meet him. I love his films very much.

Despite being a Maharashtrian, you have not done much of Marathi films or TV shows? Yes. In fact I am dying to and just the other day I spoke to my mentor Sachin Pilgaonkar and lamented about this and he said that very soon I would be seen in a Marathi film and he has promised to cast me in one of his films.

The cast of 'Humsafars' on Sony Entertainment Television gets along like a house on fire. The entire unit is like one big happy family and spends time with each other even after the shoot is over. Though the lead actors Harshad Chopra (Sahir), Shivya Pathania (Arzoo) and Sehban Azim (Zaki) share a love-hate relationship on screen, off-screen they have become thick friends. The trio also shares a common love for waffles.

Popular actress Mehwish Hayat has turned singer. Mehwish turns singer for the title track of Zindagi’s ongoing show 'Maya'. Earlier seen in 'Aina Dulhan Ka and Mere Qatil Mere Dildaar'. Ranked eighth amongst the sexiest Asian Women in the world, Mehwish who has dazzled everyone with her stunning looks and impeccable acting, now promises to entertain viewers with her soothing and soulful voice. The soundtrack has been well stylised both lyrically and musically. It starts slowly and its pace increases as the song progresses. The lyrics depicts the lives of the two sisters in the serial starting from their childhood and innocence, to the time when things start to change as they step into adulthood. The music has been composed by famous Pakistani composer Waqar Ali, and the lyrics are by Muhammad Nasir.

Are you bitter that your debut film 'Naam Hai Kyaa’ didn’t see a release? No. I am happy the way things have gone for me and I am happy with the way my career is progressing and I am thankful to God for whatever I have achieved.

Unique show completes 50 episodes

C

hala Hawa Yeu Dya’ is a coffee meeting kind of a show promoting Marathi films and plays in which stars from plays and films make an appearance and are interviewed by host Dr Nilesh Sable. The show will complete 50 episodes on February 3 on Zee Marathi. The show has comic

interludes by known comics like Bhau Kadam, Bharat Ganeshpure, Sagar Karande, Manasi Naik, Kushal Badrike etc. A celebration will take place on the sets of the show soon. Dr Sable told us that the idea of the show to promote Marathi plays and films on prime time television came from Riteish Deshmukh who had initially planned an episode like this on a very short notice to promote his

In 'Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashamh' on SAB TV, we have seen Bhide as a strict teacher to the kids and the Ek Meva Secretary to the society members. Most of the times, viewers have always seen him in his regular kurta and payjama. But, very new and shocking avatar of Bhide will leave the audience laughing out aloud soon. The sequence is about Bhide getting a lakh from his uncle owing to something and he wants to invest that money in something good. Jethalal asks him to invest that money in a plot. Later, Babuji comes up to Bhide and asks him to give him one lakh rupees since he requires them for some urgent work. Now that Bhide does not want to give that money to Babuji, he plans to disguise himself.

You were appreciated in ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ and it’s sequel? Yes. My Punjabi bhabhi role was very much appreciated and I will also be doing a similar kind of a role in Sooraj Barjatya’s forthcoming film ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Paiyyo’ and I am very excited about doing this film.

film ‘Lay Bhari’ but the audiences and the channel really loved it and it became a permanent fixture. “We respect the guests who come on our show and even though we make fun of them, it’s all in the right spirit and the show is a complete teamwork and involvement of all the artistes on the show is crucial,” he said. Bharat Ganeshpure added that the show was seen in households across Maharashtra and the secret of the success is the witty hosting, writing and acting by Dr Nilesh Sable who has conceptualised the show. “It’s like a family atmosphere on the show and the guests on our show accept the lampooning in a very sporting, good humoured way. Other artistes like Bhau Kadam, Sagar Karande, also are very good,” he told us. Bhau Kadam attributes the success of the show to the “good writing of the show and a team effort from all those on the show and since we have to improvise when the guests come on the show, that becomes more interesting for the viewers and the guests but we don’t hit below the belt.”

Killer plan

Drama galore is in store in the popular daily soap 'Tum Aise Hi Rehna' on Sony Entertainment Television as the storyline took a turn towards the recently introduced spooky angle. So far in the show we have witnessed that the mystery girl Aanchal has been troubling Ria with her motive to get close to her lost love Abhimanyu. But currently we see that her target has shifted and now she is harming the entire Maheshwari family. In the upcoming episodes we will see that Aanchal’s plan to get cosy with Abhimanyu fails when Rukmini comes to meet Abhi late at night and enquires about the accident. Will Aanchal succeed in her evil plan to kill Rukmani? Watch 'Tum Aise Hi Rehna' from Monday to Friday at 9 pm on Sony Entertainment Television.

ELBOURNE: Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams lived up to their top billing with the world number ones ripping apart Milos Raonic and Dominika Cibulkova to power into the Australian Open semi-finals. Both were in outstanding touch as they hunt for more Grand Slam glory with Djokovic meeting defending champion Stan Wawrinka for a place in the final while Williams will face unseeded Madison Keys. Big-serving Canadian eighth seed Raonic had no answer to Djokovic's superior all-court game and was ruthlessly swept aside 7-6 (7/5), 6-4, 6-2, surrendering meekly after just two hours. "I'm going to be ready for a fight against Stan," said the Serb, gunning for an eighth Grand Slam title and a fifth in Melbourne. "But knowing that I have raised the level of performance tonight, and probably playing the best match of the tournament so far is affecting my confidence in a positive way." Williams was equally impressive, shooting down last year's finalist Cibulkova to set up a revenge clash with fellow American Keys, who knocked out her sister Venus. Unlike her

I'm going to be ready for a fight against Stan. But knowing that I have raised the level of performance tonight, and probably playing the best match of the tournament so far is affecting my confidence in a positive way. NOVAK DJOKOVIC

Serena Williams of the U.S. celebrates after defeating Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia in their quarterfinal match at the Australian Open tennis championship in Melbourne.

earlier sluggish matches, Serena was in the zone from the off against the dangerous Slovak, a steely look in her eyes. The powerful 33-year-old blasted 15 aces to pummel the 11th seed 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour and make her 26th Grand Slam semi-final. She has gone on to win 18 major titles. "I feel I played well, I felt I had to," said Serena, who has been battling a cold. "I feel like when you're going up against a player like that who is confident on the court ... I knew that I needed to really play well or go home." Arch-rival Maria Sharapova made the semis on Tuesday and will face fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova on Thursday. The unseeded Keys, 19, is the tournament surprise package, fighting hard to beat a resurgent Venus 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 and end any chance of the sisters meeting in a Grand Slam semi for the first time since Wimbledon 2000. Keys did the job despite inconvenienced by a left thigh injury. "I think just being able to come back from being down and from not being able to move as well ... Just being able to kind of grind through that, still manage to win some points, is what I'm most happy about," she said. Wawrinka shattered the dream of Japanese superstar Kei Nishikori, but not before blowing five match points in a tiebreaker as nerves got the better of him. The Swiss fourth seed finally won 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) to deprive the fifth seed of a crack at another final, having made the US Open decider last year. "I trust my game. I trust myself on the court even when we start to play semifinal or final in Grand Slam," he said of meeting Djokovic. Andy Murray and Tomas Berdych play the other semi-final after booking their places on Tuesday.

Wawrinka carves up Nishikori to reach semis

Defending champion Stan Wawrinka avenged his U.S. Open quarter-final defeat to Kei Nishikori in style with an emphatic 63 6-4 7-6(6) victory to charge into the semifinals of the Australian Open on Wednesday. The fourth-seeded Swiss has worked his way slowly into the year's first grand slam but put his foot to the floor at a sundrenched Rod Laver Arena, dominating Nishikori with raw power and compiling an exhaustive highlight reel of cleanly struck winners. Wawrinka's backhand was particularly deadly, picking off the clean-hitting Japanese from all points of the court, but the Swiss was also impressive rushing to the net, a relatively new weapon in his arsenal. Wawrinka made hard work of the tiebreak, blowing five match points after storming to a 6-1 lead, but closed it out on the sixth with an ace to set up a semi-final with the winner of top seed Novak Djokovic and Milos Raonic.

OMINOUS SIGN In an ominous sigh for Keys, Serena has made the last four in Melbourne five times before and gone on win the championship each time. But Keys, coached by former Australian champion Lindsay Davenport, is undaunted. "It's just one of those things where I have to go out and I have to do my best and I have to really just stay focused on my side of the court," she said. "Because she's obviously very, very good and she's going to play very well." Keys is viewed as one of the new generation to take up the mantle from the Williams sisters and Venus was generous in her praise.

Novak Djokovic defeated Milos Raonic to enter in to the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

Windies World Cup blow as Narine pulls out S

T JOHN'S (ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA): West Indies Cricket World Cup chances suffered a major blow with mystery spinner Sunil Narine withdrawing from the squad for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand. According to a release from the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) yesterday, Narine "requires more time to be able to confidently bowl for a sustained period in international cricket with his new action". While the Trinidadian mystery spinner has not been under any cloud of official sanction from the International Cricket Council, his action was deemed on two occasions during the Indian Champions League T20 tournament last September to be illegal. It was ruled to be in violation of the 15-degree allowance of straightening of the bowling arm and he was banned from appearing for his franchise, the Kolkata Knight Riders, in the final. Narine declined an offer from the WICB to assist with remedial work to his action and pursued the corrective process on his own. His first competitive foray since the ICL experience was the Nagico Super50 regional 50-over tournament in Trinidad and Tobago which concluded on Sunday. The slow bowler returned astonishing figures of six for nine off eight overs to ensure a comprehensive victory for the hosts over Guyana in the final at the Queen's Park Oval. He was also the most successful bowler in the tournament with 12 wickets.

WICB asks BCCI to hold discussions J AMAICA: The president of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Dave Cameron has urged the BCCI to sort the issue of West Indies' pullout from the India tour midway into the series last year, through a bilateral discussion or a third-party mediation over the next two months. The WICB has also sought the intervention of the ICC in the matter and requested the BCCI not to drag them into the Indian courts for damages related to the incident. According to 'ESPNcricinfo', Cameron sent the proposal through an e-mail to the BCCI secretary Sanjay

Patel yesterday, the last day of the week-long deadline set by the Indian Cricket Board in its ultimatum to the WICB, which was sent on January 20. "We would like to propose that we (WICB and BCCI) meet at the earliest available opportunity but in any event within the next 60 days, as we remain of the view that the issues between us may best be resolved through dialogue, facilitated or otherwise, with the aim of jointly coming up with appropriate 'cricketing solutions' that will meet the legitimate interests of all stakeholders including the BCCI," he said.

Salgaocar hold Mohun Bagan in I-League M

ARGAO: Man of the Match Subrata Paul's fine performance at the post helped Salgaocar FC hold Mohun Bagan to a goalless draw in the 3rd round of the Hero I-League football. Salgaocar enjoyed better ball possession in the first half but the visitors put up an aggressive performance after the break, making inroads with repeated forays. Sony Norde, who was a constant threat to the rival defence, was denied by Paul on a couple of occasions. Paul put up an inspiring performance, especially in the second half, bringing off at least three close saves. When Paul was breached in the 58th minute after misjudging a spinning ball from defender Gurjinder Singh's clearance, referee Santosh Kumar disallowed the goal due to a foul by Balwant Singh. Bagan now have four points from two matches, while Salgaocar FC have two points from three games.

31 Iran to let foreign women watch male volleyball event T

EHRAN: Iran will break with custom and allow foreign women to attend male volleyball matches when it hosts a major tournament this summer, but female Iranian nationals will remain barred. The decision, announced today by Iran's Volleyball Federation, comes almost three months after the sport's governing body, the FIVB, said it would not allow the Islamic republic to host international events while its gender policies remained in place. Women in Iran are not normally allowed to watch male athletes in competition, with authorities saying the restriction protects them from potentially abusive behaviour among male fans. However, the policy courted controversy when a British-Iranian female law graduate was arrested outside a stadium in the capital last June, having gone there to watch a volleyball match. The woman, Ghoncheh Ghavami, was freed after a few hours but then rearrested and jailed for months before being released on bail in November. Iranian authorities have said she was detained for security reasons unrelated to the volleyball match. Her case triggered FIVB's punishment on Iran, but today's announcement relates to a men's championship organised by the Asian Volleyball Confederation, which has autonomous powers. "Foreign women as employees of embassies, the families of foreign teams or other foreign women living in Iran can attend the competition," Iranian federation president Mahmoud Afshardoost told the official IRNA news agency. Part of the 12,000-seat stadium being used for the July 31-August 8 event will be allocated to women, he said. Iran's volleyball team is one of the best in the world and very popular at home. It finished sixth in the World Championships in Poland last year and was fourth at the World League tournament. At the time of the FIVB's ruling, Iran rejected the decision as unfair, and alluding to Ghavami's case, said that "to make a connection between a nonsporting activity and our sport is unfair".
