One of the four youths from Kalyan who went missing in Iraq, fuelling controversies about them joining the ISIS, has reportedly died in a bomb attack

arib Majid, who along with Shaheen Tanki, Aman Tandel and Fahad Sheikh had gone missing from Kalyan's Bazarpeth area four months ago, is reportedly dead. Officials had claimed that the youth had left to join the ISI in Iraq and had informed their families about it. However, the families had denied the accusation saying that the boys were not of such persuasion and had not joined any terrorist group. The parents went on to file a missing complaint at the

to locate the boys who, they claimed, were innocent. Now, on August 26 at around 6:30 pm, Shaheen Tanki called his home, and spoke to his brother Farzan, informing him that Aarib had died in a bomb attack in Iraq. He requested Farzan to inform Aarib's family. A family member of one of the youths informed the ATS about the phone call from Aarib Majid Shaheen. MIRACULOUS ESCAPE? Kidnapped kid from Sakinaka says that he escaped from the abductors along with four other boys By Zuber Ansari

A

boy who was allegedly kidnapped from Mumbai's Sakinaka area has been recently rescued by the Sakinaka police. A bunch of five kids, allegedly kidnapped from Mumbai and other parts of the county, were driven in a truck all the way to Surat, in spite of the various toll nakas and other check points present across the national highway. The 12-year-old boy from Sakinaka was first kidnapped in a car and was taken to the out-

skirts of the city where kidnappers put him in a truck. The boy claims that he saw four other boys inside the truck with their hands tied up. The kidnappers then took the boys to Surat in a truck and while the truck was parked for a while, the boys managed to untie their hands. They soon fled and took the help of a local shopkeeper to inform the 12-year-old's parents in Sakinaka. The shopkeeper then handed over the boy Continued on pg 8 «

Members of a private society allege that a builder has chopped of 12 large trees in their compound without having any permission to do so By Vishnudas Sheshrao

private builder has allegedly chopped off a dozen fullgrown healthy trees and many more plants without the permission of the civic body to build a high rise in the Sion Chunabhatti area. Local civic officials said that they did not get any application for permission of tree cutting. So, these trees are chopped without the knowledge or permission of the civic body which is mandatory before cutting a tree in

Local members said that private builders and developers have shown interest in the project and talks are on with the members with regard to the development of the building. However, members of the building were surprised yesterday morning to see that some trees in their compound were chopped off. Locals alleged that around 12 full-grown trees had been chopped.

When members of society requested the tree cutters to abandon their work, one of the labourers behaved threatened them as he continued doing his work. Need for technically-correct reportage language By A Staff Reporter

O

n Wednesday, the non-governmental organisation, Population First, released a style sheet that would act as guidelines for the media when it comes to reporting sensitive issues like gender violence, and transgender and sexual minorities. This style sheet picks examples from current language and gives technically correct substitutes for them as well as educates the reader on better representation of certain acts. Speaking about this, Dr A L Sharada, director of Population First, said, “The term sex selective abortion often leads to the interpretation that all abortions are for sex selection which is not true. Terms like foeticide, murder or killing,

LALU OUT OF SURGERY By A Staff Reporter

P

olitician Lalu Prasad Yadav who was admitted to the Asian Heart Institute (AHI) at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) last Sunday, underwent three procedures which went on for six hours and 15 minutes, on Wednesday. A team of 20 trained doctors from AHI, led by Dr. Ramakanta Panda, Dr. Pradyoth Kumar Rath and Dr. Chetan Gaonkar performed the surgery. The aortic valve replacement and repair surgeries started at about 9.45am and concluded just after four in the evening. A 3mm hole in the heart was also repaired.Dr Panda said, "There were no surprises. We had already informed the family that there were multiple issues in the heart and they were ready."The 66-year-old Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader, former chief minister of Bihar, will be in the ICU for three to four days and in recovery for another week. “It was a flawless operation and Laluji tolerated the procedure very well,” said Dr Panda.Dr D Silva added, “All parametres are stable and standard precautions will now be applicable.”

Abortion is legal in India for a broad range of conditions. Similarly, there is a need to understand the correct meaning of several words that are commonly used while reporting issues of the transgender and sexual minorities. One can't be substituted for another.” She further went on to say, “We realised that certain words are being blindly used in reports because they have always been used. There are better substitutes for them but the media has not been informed. This is why we thought of coming up with this style sheet. We realised that simply blaming the media for not being sensitive is not right. They also need to be shown the right way.” Population First took six months to complete the style sheet. A similar guide for the world of advertisement has also been made.

Laadli Awards:

The Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity (LMAAGS) 2013-2014 was announced on Wednesday where entries from the Western region of the country like Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Daman and Diu have been called for. The entries should have been published/broadcast between July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014 and the last date for sending in entries is October 31. “From having around 150 entries when it was started to getting more than 1,700 entries now, these awards have come a long way. Talking about such sensitive issues in the correct way, is the way to go” said Dolly Thakore, co-ordinator of the National Media Awards.

While BMC has issued a circular for a 2-day holiday for Ganesh fest, some schools have already declared more holidays; others are perplexed By Yatin Ingle

W

hile the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has already sent a circular to the schools, declaring the Ganesh Utsav holidays, a few schools are still confused over the declaration of the holidays. Though the BMC has stated that schools should give only two days of holidays, some schools have already declared holidays for more than two days while many schools are still waiting for any other changes in the scheduling of the Ganesh Utsav holidays. Last week, the BMC sent a circular to the BMC schools listing holidays for Ganesh Utsav in the aided and unaided schools. The circular stated that there will be holidays for two days which have to be compensated by schools by working full time on four Saturdays. Generally, BMC schools have a half-day on

Saturdays. The circular also stated that August 28 and September 4 would be declared as holidays and have asked the schools to follow the rules strictly. A teacher from a surburban civic school, who did not wished to be named, told the ADC: “We have got the circular but are waiting for changes, if any. If by August 28 there are no more changes, we will be declaring the holidays as per the latest circular of the BMC.” Another teacher from central Mumbai, states that the school has already declared a five-day vacation for the students and now it would be difficult to change the schedule. Last year, even though the BMC did not approve the demand of the MNVS, the students' wing had forcibly shut the schools and later the BMC and education department, at the last moment had to reschedule the vacations and adjust the working schedules of the schools. Shubhangi Jogi, Education Officer, BMC told the ADC: “Schools will have to schedule the holidays as per the circular only. Any school not following the circular will have to face strict action from the department. The zonal education officers will be visiting the schools to keep a check if the holidays are scheduled as per the BMC circular.”

ALL THAT GLITTERS IS GOLD, AND ALSO DIAMONDS AND RUBIES:

(At left): Crafted in Thailand, a Ganesha idol in 24 carat gold is on display at Bhandup's Neptune Mall. The idol, imported by Pranda Jewelry, is being retailed at Rs.16.55 lakh. (Right): And more glittery news from Mumbai's richest Ganpati Mandal - the GSB Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav at Wadala. The 14.5ft idol has been sculpted by Avinash Patkar from Girgaum. The ornaments are made of 22 carat gold and silver. The golden crown is 33 inches in height and weighs 22 kg. with diamonds and other precious stones embedded on it. The idol is adorned with various gold and silver ornaments which altogether weigh 70 kg and 470 kg, respectively. It is reported that the idol is heavily insured, for Rs. 259 crore!

Putting them out to pasture

into the Asian Heart Hospital in perfect stride yesterday, with his retenue of security men and supporters hot-footing it beside him to match his bold pace. The trouncing of the BJP in the Bihar bypolls must have definitely contributed to some of the very visible zest. His operation, we hear, has also been very successful. Winning spree? We certainly do not begrudge him that!

Mis-identifying

THE THREE WISE MEN: Atal Behari Vajpayee, Murli Manohar Joshi and Lal Kishan Advani

THE BJP's senior-most leaders, Atal Behari Vajpayee, Lal Kishan Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, are out in the cold. It had to happen. They were made to sit on the benches for quite some time, but never took the hint. That they all had minds of their own hardly helped, given that Modi is a mastermind himself and is known to brook no dissent or dissidence. That he had a crude but effective hatchet man and strategist in Gujarat crony Amit Shah should have left the three wise men in no doubt that the door would be slammed in their faces sooner or later. All three were highly respected power centers in their heydays, until Vajpayee (89) got figuratively and literally weak in the knees, Joshi (80) and Advani (86) had a public spat regarding Jinnah being or not being secular. And Advani further rocked his own boat and almost sank it by nursing prime ministerial ambitions. To keep up appearances, however, the three have been shifted into something called Margdarshak Mandal, ostensibly a mentors' panel. Modi remains cock of the rock!

A spring in his stride

Talking about cock of the rock, one must

really hand it to Lalu Prasad Yadav. Much parodied and derided as a Bihari bumpkin, the former chief minister and bete noir of saffron parties is still full of gumption. The TV channels kept repeating that he would be having a major heart surgery which was complicated enough to last for over six hours. All indications that he must be in some feeble and precarious state of health. Not so. The man strolled, nay, marched

Sir Richard Attenborough, who died four days ago, was known world over for his active roles in the film industry as actor, director and producer. His brother, David Attenborough, is also very well known, but for his work on nature documentaries. So in a classic case of mistaken identity, a large section of the media was mourning the death of Richard Attenborough, the “legendary nature documentarian.” For several hours after his death, Twittersphere was alive with messages: “Well, never watching another nature show

David and Richard Attenborough

now that Richard Attenborough has passed.” But wasn't long before others noticed the mistake and made satirical comments. One user said, “The world's a worse place without Richard Attenborough and his wonderful nature docs. Those ones he made about dinosaurs are unbeatable,” referring to his role in Steven Spielberg's 1993 'Jurassic Park.' As revealing as the misinformation was about people's hasty nature on the Internet, it also introduced a less tragic tone to the death of a film-making legend.

ORGY OF MUSH: Tomatoes are retailing here in aamchi Mumbai at Rs.80 per kilo. So naturally our attention got riveted to what we can only enviously term: What a waste! People throw tomatoes at each other, during the annual 'Tomatina' tomato fight fiesta in the village of Bunol, near Valencia, in Spain, on Wednesday. The streets of an eastern Spanish town are awash with red pulp as thousands of semi-dressed people pelt each other with tomatoes in the annual 'Tomatina' battle that has become a major tourist attraction. At the annual fiesta in Bunol on Wednesday, trucks dumped 125 tonnes of ripe tomatoes for some 22,000 participants, many from abroad to throw during the hour-long morning festivities.

day after the suspension of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Sunil Paraskar, who is accused of rape and molestation by a model, a Preliminary Enquiry (PE) has been initiated against the officer. This is to determine if he has committed administrative lapses while dealing with the victim before the complaint. “A PE is being conducted by joint commissioner of police (administration) Vivek Phansalkar, said city police chief Rakesh Maria. The PE will reveal if there were any administrative lapses by Paraskar while dealing with the model, who came in touch with him through a complaint. On the basis of the PE report, the state would take the call whether a Departmental Enquiry (DE) should be initiated against Paraskar. DGP Sanjeev Dayal observed, through the report of the investigators, that Paraskar appears to have violated Central Civil Services (Conduct) Rules and his conduct amounts to spoiling the image of 'All India Service Officers', the police said. The classmates had reportedly fled from the hostel premises on Monday afternoon (August 25) after which a missing persons complaint was registered by the school authorities at the Virar police station. While the police were trying to track the whereabouts of the missing teenagers, they were informed by local villager, Shyam Lakhma Jabbar, about the bodies lying on the marshy swamp of a river flowing near the school.

A police team rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies. Officials from the school who were summoned by the police have confirmed the identity of the bodies as those of the missing students. 30-year-old druggist was allegedly murdered by another druggist over a petty issue on Tuesday night in a building at Nagpada. According to the police, they have arrested the accused Abidali Kadar Shaikh (31) who allegedly killed Shashi Govind Makvana. On the day of the incident, Makvana was walking down the stairs from his house when the accused allegedly slightly pushed. Both of them started quarrelling and hurling abuses on each other. 33-year-old woman whose body was found at Gorai beach last week was identified by the police on Monday. The deceased, Pooja Makvana was a resident of Bhayander (East). After her body was recovered, the victim's photo was circulated at various police stations to identify her. They were able to identify the victim after her mother had filed a missing person's complaint at Bhayander police station. According to police sources, the victim used to live in Dubai. She got married to Arun Makvana five years ago and shifted to Mumbai. She then joined a call centre at Malad. She also didn't have

any children. The victim started having an affair with one of her co-workers at the call centre. This led to her divorce. After the police identified the victim with the help of her mother, they gained information about her ex-husband and detained him on Tuesday for questioning regarding the case. Malad Police had filed a case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for murder against unknown assailants last week. But they are yet to identify the accused. A police officer said, “We will ask the call centre employees for more information about the victim. We have also detained her boyfriend to gather information for the case.”

One of the relatives said, on condition of anonymity, "We have not talked to Aarib's parents as they are in deep grief, but we came to know that Shaheen's brother received a phone call informing about Aarib's death. It is really hard to believe that he has died in a

Sanjay Jadhav, DCP, Zone 3, Kalyan, said, “As the case is been investigated by the ATS and is been handled on State and Union level, we don't have any official information to provide." Amit Shah clips Rajiv Pratap Rudy's wings, appoints O P Mathur to oversee Maha polls By Prashant Hamine

A

s an immediate fallout of the dismal performance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the recent assembly by-elections in Bihar the party has apparently moved in to clip the wings of party's Maharashtra in-charge Rajeev Pratap Rudy who hails from Bihar. The party fared poorly in Rudy's own stronghold of Chhapra. With just days to go before the assembly elections are announced for Maharashtra, party president Amit Shah approved the appointment of party stalwart Om Prakash Mathur (62) as in-charge specifically for the Maharashtra assembly elections. However Rudy while speaking to media persons here yesterday denied that Mathur's appointment was an attempt to supersede him. He argued that Mathur will assist him in management of assembly elections. Party sources disclosed that the poor show by the party as the

ship. Sources disclosed that the party has been stressing upon the need to improve its performance in assembly elections as the outcome directly affects winning seats in the Rajya Sabha. At present, numerically. the BJP has less seats than the Congress. The latter using its numerical strength has resorted blocking passage of important pieces of legislation in the Upper House. Sources disclosed that Om Prakash Mathur, a Rashtriya

Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) cadre has enjoyed good equations with Prime Minister Modi for more than three decades now. It was under his leadership that the BJP made a clean sweep in the Gujarat assembly polls that saw Modi creating a hat-trick of sorts. Mathur who originally hails from Rajasthan has been the man who has delivered for the party in assembly elections to Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in the past.

een on regaining the recognition of the Republican Party of India (RPI), RPI national general secretary Dr Rajendra Gavai yesterday announced that the party has decided to contest 100 Assembly seats on its own and the rest of 188 assembly seats in alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh (BBM) and All India Majlis-eIttehandul Muslimeen (MIM). Speaking to newspersons here, the RPI national general secretary claimed that their grand alliance will bag 40 to 45 Assembly seats in the ensuing Assembly elections and will emerge as the king maker in the formation of the next government in the

state. He appealed to all likeminded political parties to join in their secular alliance and to offer an alternative to the electorate. Replying to queries about the party's earlier electoral tie-up with the Congress during elections, the RPI leader disclosed that the Congress had offered the RPI some seats which they did not approve of. He added that the Congress was inclined to offer just a few seats and that too the electorally difficult

ones. Gavai stated that the party wants to ensure that it gets at least nine Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) or ensure that it polls the requisite percentage of votes to get back the official recognition for the party. He added that the party has held consultations on seat sharing with BSP's Vilas Garud, BBM's Prakash Ambedkar and Sayyed Momin of MIM. He however refused to comment upon when the RPI will declare its list of candidates.

MPs with criminal record in cabinet T

HE Supreme Court is quite clear with regard to its directive to the prime minister about the inclusion in the cabinet of a minister with a criminal background. There are a large number of MPs with criminal charges against them. Can the prime minister appoint a crime-tainted MP? The Supreme Court does not lay down what exactly a prime minister should do. As per the Constitution, the SC has stated the prime minister is the repository of all Constitutional values. A person with a criminal background must not be in a cabinet, but the SC leaves it to 'the wisdom of the PM'. Tainted netas should not be in the cabinet. The directive of the SC, however, does not say emphatically an MP with criminal charges should not become a minister. It leaves the onus to the PM. Following the observations of the Supreme Court, it is certain that the prime minister will go ahead and appoint party MPs with a criminal record. In the BJP, there are a dozen of MPs with a criminal background. It looks like there can be no end to this practice. So long as politicians with criminal backgrounds are allowed to contest elections, we cannot avoid the appointment of ministers with a criminal record. Many politicians who commit murders, rapes and other heinous crimes contest elections and get elected. The trial takes a long time and some of them sit happily in Parliament and in the council of ministers.

LL is not well in the ruling alliance in Maharashtra, particularly in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), it seems. The pointer is that many second and third rank leaders of the party are deserting it and beelining to join the Shiv Sena, that too on the eve of the forthcoming State Assembly elections. Does it give a signal that the trend set during the recently held Lok Sabha elections in May would continue in October also? In that case, there would be change of guard in Mantralaya also. Or is it that who are leaving their party to join Shiv Sena have already sensed that they are not likely to be chosen as party nominees to run the Assembly elections, and thus to secure their future, they are knocking the door of Shiv Sena? Another question is why Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray has kept his doors open to anybody and everybody to enter? Will this strategy of ‘Incoming free’, boost the morale of the ranks and files or would it create an atmosphere of fear, discontent and distrust amongst loyal shivsainiks, who have remained with the organization in the thick and thin in the past? Answers to these questions would probably help finding the future course of politics in Maharashtra. It is not a new or unique trend that political activists cross floor to join the opposite camp. Right from 1952 elections, mid-level leaders have been changing sides to better their election prospects. Even before the 2009 Assembly elections, then sitting MLAs had changed side. You may recall Sada Sarwankar, the then sitting Shiv Sena MLA deserted the party and joined Congress. The same evening he filed nomination as Congress candidate. He failed to win the elections and thus returned to Shiv Sena two years later. Now he is again angling at getting party ticket. Former Shiv Sena CM and then sitting Leader of Opposition Narayan Rane quit Shiv Sena and joined the Congress. The next day, he was sworn-in as cabinet minister. Similarly, many other leaders who joined Congress in the past were immediately awarded with ministerial berth. Chhagan Bhujbal, Ganesh Naik bring a few of them. The difference between then and now is that earlier the trend was to leave Shiv Sena to join the ruling side. Now it has reversed. Leaders are leaving ruling side and entering the opposition side, with a hope that the political winds have started blowing the opposite direction.

Change of power Surely, if this is the indication of the political scenario of tomorrow, it’s vivid that change of power is imminent. This is an encouraging signal for the Sena-BJP alliance, particularly for Shiv Sena, that has been forced to play the second bugles. However, it also has unfurled

www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 2014

danger flag for the party as an organization. Unlike most of the political outfits in the nation, Shiv Sena began as a movement. Then became an organization and finally took a shape of being a political party. Its core strength still remains in its organisational structure that is based on its movement in late 60s. In such a structure, it is very difficult, if not impossible for a new political entrant to gel in the organisational culture. As a result, the person always remains an ‘outsider’. Now, that at least half a dozen leaders from other parties are entering Shiv Sena, the main concern with the hardcore shivsainiks is that how to behave with the newcomers. And if they are coming with a promise to get party nomination for the Assembly elections, the problem would be more serious as those are now aspiring to get the ticket would

THINKING ALOUD Bharatkumar Raut not only disillusioned, but collectively they would be in a mood to revolt. If such rebellion happens at many places, it would have adverse immediate impact on party’s election prospects and in the long-run on the party’s organisational structure. In May 2014 Lok Sabha elections, there was Narendra Modi wave in Maharashtra also. The BJP had granted tickets to at least two candidates, Kapil Patil (Bhiwandi) and Heena Gavit (Nandurbar), both shifting loyalty from Congress to BJP on the eve of the elections. Both won the elections with handsome margin, but would they be able to win respect and confidence of the party cadre? Now, the bigger issue is: should any political party allow influx of aspirants on the eve of the test of their fresh mandate, i.e. elections? What is the guarantee that who have crossed the floor recently, will not desert the new party also sooner than later if the party fails to offer them ticket and if they are defeated in the elections? This is possible because there is no love lost for the new party. If the sole intention of the new entrants is to grab party nomination, then it is but natural

that they would leave it in case the goal is not achieved. In such a scenario, what would Uddhav Thackeray do to save his face?

Fractured voting Another question is of voters’ mind. A political worker who is known to the area and its electorate as an activist of a certain party, people see party character and philosophy in the person. In case, the activist leaves the party to join another, most puzzled lot is the voters of the constituency. Whom do they vote for? To the candidate, whom they knew as a worker of an X party but now contesting against the official candidate of that party or to the candidate, who has shifted his loyalty and philosophy to another party? Confused voters’ dilemma often reflect in the voting pattern. Such fractured voting does not elect ‘true’ representative. To avoid this dilemma and contradiction, an amendment in the People’s Representation Act is urgently needed. As of now, provisions of Anti-Defection Act are applicable to only those who are elected to represent people in Assemblies or in Parliament. If the purview of the act is extended to the candidates of the elections too, then there could be a provision to ensure that only those who are enrolled as party members for more than two years, can contest the elections and crossing of party membership is not allowed within two years, the ugly game of Aaya Ram – Gayaa Ram can be avoided. Will the Narendra Modi government bring such legislation? It is difficult to believe that any government would be willing to do so. This is because all are interested in ensuring more activists from other parties to join their party-fold to show the world, that their party is the most sought-after outfit and thus the most credible and trustworthy too. Coming back to the issue of leaders joining Shiv Sena in big number, one note of caution is that if these people come in big numbers and many of them are offered party nomination, notwithstanding the mood of the loyal workers and in case, they get elected, will there be a real Shiv Sena Raj? Or will Congress be again back in power though through backdoor? And what is the guarantee that they would not go back to their original party on the eve of the next elections? Recall this, when sugar barons Balasaheb Vikhe-Patil and his son Radhakrishna entered Shiv Sena in 1985 to win Lok Sabha and Assembly elections respectively. Both became ministers. But left the party in a lurch and returned to Congress. Radhakrishna retained his minister’s position in the new regime also. It is said history repeats itself. But why give it a chance? @BharatkumarRaut

‘Focus on the right object to succeed in life’ T

HE main object of life can only be one object, though there may be as many external objects as there are things and beings. There is one object of life for the reason that there is only one life and this in spite of the fact that it appears outwardly to be many lives. It is in this thought that we can unite and it is from this thought that true wisdom is learned. No doubt that main object of life cannot be understood at once, and therefore the best thing for every person is first to pursue his object in life. For in the accomplishment of his personal object he will arrive some day at the accomplishment of that inner object. When man does not understand this he goes on thinking there is something else to accomplish, and he thinks of all that is before him that is not yet accomplished. That is why he remains a failure. The person who is not definite about his object has not yet begun his journey on the path of life. One should therefore first deter-

mine one's object for oneself however small that object is. Once it is determined one has begun life. We find with many people that somehow they never happen to find their life's vocation. And what happens then is that in the end they consider their life a failure. All

MATTER & SPIRIT through their life they go from one thing to another, yet as they do not know their life's object they can accomplish so little. When people ask why they do not succeed, the answer is: because they have not yet found their object. As soon as a person has found his life's object he begins to feel at home in this world, where before he had felt himself in a strange world. No sooner has a person found his way than he will prove to be fortunate, because all the things he wants to accomplish will come by themselves.

Even if the whole world were against him, he will get such a power that he can hold on to his object against anything. He will get such a patience that when he is on the way to his object no misfortune will discourage him. There is no doubt that as long as he has not found it he will go from one thing to another, and again to another; and he will think that life is against him. Then he will begin to find fault with individuals, conditions, plans, the climate, with everything. Thus, what is called fortunate or successful is really having the right object. When a person is wearing clothes which were not made for him, he says they are too wide or too short, but when they are his clothes he feels comfortable in them. Everyone should therefore be given freedom to choose his object in life. And if he finds his object one knows that he is on the right path. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

THE Modi-led NDA government at the Centre has demeaned the chair of the Governor of states by sacking most Governors appointed by the previous UPA government, the latest casualty being Maharashtra governor K Sankaranarayan who has been forced to resign by shunting him to Mizoram. The Governors posting has lost meaning and the elected government at the Centre has made the Chair of the governor cosmetic by offering loyal members of their party the post to enjoy the wonderful benefits and royalty that the post offers from palatial accommodation to all the perks that the royals enjoy. No merit or intelligence goes in their appointment but party work or loyalty are considered for the job which is truly sad. The Governor hardly has any powers in today's democratic setup and his job can easily be carried out by the President of our country from the Rashtrapati Bhavan who in any case is referred to by governors whenever they come in the picture for some decisions when trust of vote is sought. THE ball has been set in motion for the ambitious Metro III phase of the urban transport in Mumbai metropolitan region. The budget estimate tells us that the cost of this gigantic project, to be completed in five years, works out to around Rs 24K crore. Considering the previous experience in execution of similar schemes of this magnitude, one can safely say that it would be at least a couple of decades till the first train on this route gets flagged off by a top dignitary. And about the estimated expenditure, less said the better. One can bet on it that by the time the project sees the light of the day, the amount figure would have easily crossed a mind-boggling Rs 1 lakh crore.

IT is a matter of immense pride that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the first Indian PM ever to address a huge gathering at the famous Madison Square Garden in New York on September 28 when the Indian American Community Foundation will plan to accord a hearty welcome to him with a community reception during his US visit. Hollow claims APROPOS your story 'Deadly fight over deadline' (ADC, Aug 26). It is a sad commentary on public values today that festivals like Ganesh Chaturvedi and Dahi-handi have almost completely lost whatever religious significance they may have once had. They have turned into mere 'events' and the mandal organisers can be likened to professional event managers (some of them probably are). As for the police claim to stop all loudspeakers after 10 pm, it is likely to prove a hollow one. You can be sure that the loud music and drumbeats will go on far into the night. The organisers are indifferent to police diktats, because they are confident of the support of local politicians whose main purpose is to nurture their vote banks. The incident highlighted in your article is particularly shocking. A young man's perfectly reasonable request to reduce the volume was met with arrogance and violence, which later degenerated into freefor-all. And what did the police do? They arrested the family of the youth, regardless of the fact that the altercation was provoked by the organisers. It sends an unhealthy signal to the common man that he is powerless in such situations; and can expect no help from the au-

thorities. The best thing he can do is to stay silent and suffer. —Firoze Hirjikaka, Colaba

A legend is no more THE doyen of English film Richard Attenborough is no more. He died at the age of 90 and that shows his will to live. His creation of Mahatma Gandhi in his film was simply su-

Sir Richard Attenborough perb. Both the young and the old liked the film. Attenborough had moved behind the camera for the first time in 1969, to direct 'Oh What a Lovely War'. He was able to round up an impressive cast and impressed everyone. However, this anti-war musical was not popular with audiences or critics, many praised its bravery in attempting something different. But he never looked back and made British films with a broader outlook to meet the demands of the audiences and the film critics. His film 'Jurassic Park' [1993] won acclaim and gave him a big break. Attenborough was one of Britain's leading actors during the middle of the century, before becoming a highly successful director. His best known films as an actor included 'Brighton Rock', 'The Great Escape' and 'Jurassic Park'. His director's CV included 'A Bridge Too Far', 'Gandhi', for which he won an Academy Award, and 'Cry Freedom'. He had a grand vision and a deep desire to educate, decrying injustice and extolling heroes such as Gandhi and Steve Biko, a South African victim of Apartheid. It was Gandhi, arguably one of the least obvious successes in the history of the cinema, that marked the highlight of his remarkable career, clinching eight Oscars, including best film and best director. — Subramaniam Krishnan, Vashi

We need concrete roads THE roads in Mumbai are going from bad to worse day by day. The tax payers' money is spent on road development in Mumbai but the roads are giving away with a short span of two to three months resulting in potholes all over the city. It appears that only concrete roads can give a permanent solution to the problems prevailing road construction. The roads of our city are being put to great pressure and a very few of them manage to stand the strain. In the light of this, the BMC should plan in such a way that concrete roads are laid in all the focal points of the city and by the year ending 2015 all the roads should be made of concrete to reduce the cost factor. We all look forward to the alternative of concrete roads as the panacea to avoid frequent repairs to roads in this pocket. It would be a longterm solution but a permanent one to the people using the roads in the city. The advantages of switching over to concrete roads are many. Apart from their long life, they also save on fuel, provide for better driving comfort and use cement, a plentifully available commodity in the country. Maintenance costs are also

CEMENTING ROADS: Mumbai needs to build concrete roads as a solution to the constant potholes across city roads, thus saving on a lot of money, time and energy. lower. Concrete roads have a small green advantage as well. Being white-topped they reflect light at night which means the intensity of street lighting can be brought down in terms of wattage. The main disadvantage is that bitumen roads will cost only one fourth of what is the outlay for concrete roads. — Abhisheck Maniam

CITY

GRP launches FB page to curb crime By Vishnudas Sheshrao

G

overnment Railway Police (GRP) embarked on another radical and techno savvy experiment by opening an official Facebook page on the social networking site to facilitate railway commuters in the city. Officials appealed commuters to simply upload a photo or clip of anti-social element instead of visiting a police station to register a complaint. According to GRP officials, this idea is the brainchild of newly appointed GRP Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Singal. Dr Singal made a eight-point agenda on the lines of corporate culture. The eight points include zero tolerance, community policing, capability building, crime prevention, safety of women, property return drive and good public relations. GRP officials observed that tolerance has been increased among the commuters and they bear the crime. Hardly few commuters come forward to

lodge complaints because it is very time consuming and no one has time, here in Mumbai. While talking to reporters, Dr Singal said, “On an average, everyone spends three hours every day in commuting apart from their eight to ten hours long work shift and hence one does not have the time to visit a police station to lodge a complaint in case of a crime and and hence we made this experiment to reach commuters through the social networking site. One has to just click the photo of wrongdoer while committing a crime and paste it on our Facebook page.” He added, “Our Facebook page is monitored round the clock. Our team will plunge into action immediately after the post on Facebook. If the offence is grave, in that case only we will request the concerned person to come and register a FIR. GRP has also planned to incorporate young brigade of National Service Scheme (NSS) to act as its eyes and ears on local train platforms.

AFP's Middle East correspondent shares his knowledge on the subject with ORF Mumbai By Abhishek Vissapragada

O

bserver Research Foundation Mumbai organised a discussion with Jay Deshmukh, a Cairo based Middle East correspondent for Agence France Presse (AFP) on the topic 'Why are West Asia and North Africa in Turmoil?' Sudheendra Kulkarni, Chairman, ORF Mumbai, also engaged with him in a conversation on the same topic. Deshmukh has served AFP as a correspondant in Iraq, Iran, Libya and Egypt for the past 15 years while Kulkarni visited Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia and Libya earlier this year. During the event, Kulkarni spoke about the revolutionary protests in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt and Syria and also about the current crisis in Iraq. He felt that these regions were a combination of hope and horror. “These places are in a mess and their population is divided into many sections. India can be a model and symbol for these regions to show how different ideologies, religions, race and divisions can live together peacefully and prosper as a nation,” said Deshmukh. He also read a paragraph from the book 'Levant: Splendour and Catastrophe on the Mediterranean' written by Philip Mansel to describe about the situation in the Middle East. After that, Jay spoke about his six weeks experience in Iraq during the US invasion, his capture and release by militants in Iraq, Sunnis and Shias and the various divisions among them, how Bollywood actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan are famous among the people in these regions, the 1979 Iranian revo-

Jay Deshmukh addressing the audience. lution, Iran's fight against Saddam, changing perspective after 9/11, the Arab Spring which began in Tunisia, how Osama Bin Laden's death led to the division of Al Qaeda and formation of ISIS. On the issue of people joining the ISIS, some from India who have also joined the group, Deshmukh said, “Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS, is

an attraction to these young people joining the group. This group is capturing territories in Iraq and Syria and thus their power is making them popular. I feel people will join this group because they have a polarised view based on their ethnic group and sentiments. As long as Abu Bakr is in power, ISIS will keep attracting more youngsters on their side.”

LOOKING THROUGH LFW Missed Lakmé Fashion Week this year? Don’t worry, because the Woman’s World Team is bringing you a run-down of some of their favourite looks, collections and designers from this year’s four-day fashion fest

GETTING FLORAL WITH NEHA AGARWAL

GET NOSTALGIC WITH ARPITA MEHTA

Debutant Neha Agarwal’s Mille Fleurs — a thousand flowers collection, was one of the most wearable designer showcases this year, with a series of outfits inspired by 17th century French embroidery. The dresses were our favourites, and we can see them looking great off By converting authentic Indian organic tussar, ahimsa, gicha and muga silk into pretty, Frenchinspired silhouettes, the Hyderabad-based designer has created a line of very pretty, fusion outfits.

With her collection, inspired by her grandmother’s cocktail looks, Arpita delivered a dose of nostalgia through a very pretty Indian collection. While her layered lehenga-jackets were not our favourites and the greys were a bit dull, the strong black brocade looks were a good fit, especially with the flower embroidery and winged sleeves. However, what made us look twice was the showstopper outfit, modelled by Ileana D’cruz (right). The pink cut-out blouse and box pleated lehenga were both welldesigned, but the foil work, coupled with the elegant silver body chain, is what made it so gorgeous.

TURN HEADS WITH LAILA SINGH

HEAVY ON BLING WITH MANISH MALHOTRA

That Laila Singh is a jewellery designer was apparent from her Flight of Fancy collection for her label, Social Butterfly. The black-and-white themed collection is not too impressive if you look at just the outfits — it’s heavy on fitted and bodycon dresses, maxi skirt and top combinations and halter, strapless and keyhole necks. But, what makes the collection work strikingly well on the runway, is the accompanying jewellery, including cuffs, earrings, hand harnesses, palm bracelets and neckpieces, which add pizazz to an otherwise dull line. The semi-precious stones and metals do what Laila hopes they will, drawing attention to the outfit and encouraging a peacock-like aesthetic when it comes to jewellery.

There’s no doubt that Manish Malhotra’s Gloss collection was meant to be one long show stopper. However, while a lot of the Indian cocktail outfits stood out, none were breathtaking. The purple lehenga, worn by showstopper Kareena Kapoor, was too metallic and blingy. The menswear, with its Chinese collars, was much more appealing to us. The materials were impressive, with flowy chiffons and soft nets taking centrestage and we preferred the sofer shades and translucent, shimmery pieces. However, a few pieces from the elaborate collection did catch our eye, including Karisma Kapoor’s black brocade ensemble, the models draped in pale pinks and this glamorous, backless draped gown with its wine red skirt (top).

ROYAL TOUCHES BY JADE

PRETTY IN PINK WITH ANUSHREE REDDY

If fashion that highlights Indian heritage and culture is your cup of tea, you will love the In The Temples of Hoysala collection, presented by JADE at LFW this weekend. The attention to detail on each part of every outfit was commendable, along with the moulded motifs and almost bridal themed jewellery. While dull golds and silvers seemed predominant, we preferred their brighter coloured outfits, including this regal jacket and lehenga outfit in coral red. If you missed seeing it at LFW, it will be on view at their flagship store from next month onwards.

There weren’t too many collections that could rival Anushree Reddy’s feminine Portobello collection. Another Indo-Western fusion of Hyderabadi outfits and Victorian era prints, Portobello: The Indian Chapter, was heavy on pastel shades of pink and blue and vintage floral prints. While showstopper Nargis Fakhri looked almost ethereal in her predominantly pink lehenga and choli, her makeup was too heavy. The tulle, chiffon, raw silk and organza gave the collection a romantic old-world charm. Although colours were as light as rose pink, sea green, beige and lavender, the collection had a bold, royal feel to it.

A REAL SHOWSTOPPER WITH MASABA

SOFT AS PEACH WITH SONAAKSHI RAAJ

Most of Masaba’s collection was just alright. Titled Wandress, the ramp was filled with bodycon dresses that we quite liked the look of. Inspired by Roman Payne’s poetry, the collection is filled with oversized florals and we like that she kept her colours simple and her design lines clean and uncomplicated. We preferred the dresses to her skirts, but showstopper Shilpa Shetty’s cutout dress and white drape was gorgeous, fitting her like a glove and really standing out without looking gaudy, even with its dark navy blue colour and gold border.

While Malaika Arora Khan looked great in the ruby red gown designed by Sonaakshi Raaj with an elaborate tulle trail, that was not our favourite ensemble from her opulent collection. The rest of the collection was refined and chic, featuring reds, nudes, charcoals and metallics. Our absolute favourite though was the opening outfit, a soft peach sarigown that channelled a modern, chic and feminine look with the elegance of a traditional sari.

MIXED PRINTS WITH URVASHI JONEJA Think mixed prints, bold, strong designs, sharp lines, bricks and black, white and red and you’ve got Urvashi Joneja’s collection down to the T. Titled Guarded, the collection impressed us purely because of the armour-like look and the way she uses mixed prints without going overboard. Her pantsuits and maxi dresses, in particular, really impressed us.

SOFT SHADES WITH PAYAL SINGHAL With a lot of Chintz work done in rich crepes, silks and linen, the deconstructed line by Payal Singhal called Excavations, was aimed at bringing back a range Indian-Western fashion, while tracing the rich history of the ancient technique of chintz printing. Although the collection was filled with pretty shades of cranberry, coral and sienna, we were more drawn to the more subtle, aqua and teal floral printed pieces from the collection.

PRISTINE WHITES BY PURVI DOSHI

GET EDGY WITH VARUN BAHL

With an abundance of textiles, mirror-work and handembroidered outfits with Aztec prints, designer Purvi Doshi really went all out with her LFW collection and it mostly works. We usually love colour, but when it came to this collection, the pristine white Indo-Western outfits done up with mirror-work were our favourites. The showstopper outfit in particular, worn by actress Sonal Chauhan, managed to take a complete mirror-work outfit and make it look ethereal, without looking the least bit overdone.

Talk about wearable fashion and you can’t skip the Reliance Trends collection by Varun Bahl. Comprising of mostly of western wear, the collection was not outof-the-box, and featured quintessentially western silhouettes with jackets, dresses, trousers, skirts and shirts that incorporate Indian design techniques, while the black, silver, grey and ivory palettes make it quite edgy. The rose, blue and pale pink add a feminine touch that is enhanced by the use of silk, tulle and crepe. The silk digital printed dresses stood out, as did Priyanka Chopra’s edgy runway look, with the currently trending crop top, statement neckpiece, high-waist pants and sleek silver jacket.

BEAUTIFUL BLACKS BY SHRUTI SANCHETI

GO INDIGO WITH PRIYADARSHANI RAO

Textiles showed up again with Shruti Sancheti’s work, a collection titled Strands of Silk. The collection was a mixture of rich fabrics, with woven Benarasi work in vibrant colours. The entire collection had a bold and festive vibe, and although it featured a range of saris, palazzo pants and lehengas, our favourites were the belted maxis, where the fusion element was particularly apparent, with bold embroidered bodices and cut-out necklines.

All those who missed Priyadarshani Rao at last season’s LFW should be excited about this collection. The designer made a bold comeback with An Ode To Indigo. It featured pretty paisleys and florals that were softer and more subtly placed than most other collections. The silhouettes were vintage, with palazzo pants, overdresses and tunics featuring strongly, along with contemporary layering. We love that this collection was so wearable, but also runway-appropriate.

‘Y

ou cannot fail if you are resolutely determined that you will not.’ Tanaaz Bhatia tells us that this saying, by Abraham Lincoln, has guided her through life. The determination is apparent if you take a look at the career of this entrepreneur, who has worked for companies such as Merril Lynch, Citibank, Naspers and Mid-day. Her nine-year stint at Wall Street saw her jump from an analyst to associate and then to vice president, after which she decided to move back to India. Here, she ventured into the world of media by helping to raise funds and finalise marketing plans for her friends’ projects. She worked on marketing Bollywood films such as Ra-One, Don 2, Agent Vinod, Cocktail and Vicky Donor, and then founded her company, Bottom Line Media Pvt. Ltd., which was the consultant for Hollywood film, The Zero Theorem. She talks to us about switching careers, gives us an insight into the world of Wall Street and shares her experience of working in the field of marketing.

Wall Street

to Media There are several women who switch careers when they find out what their true calling is. However, not many are like Tanaaz Bhatia, who discovered her true calling only after a successful Wall Street career. Dev Goswami talks to the owner of Bottom Line Media about her switch, working with big names from the film industry and much more

What tips would you like to give women who want to switch careers and/ or start something of their own (just like you did), but are hesitant because of the risks involved? If you dream of it and have a clear vision, you must go after it. I believe that anything is achievable as long as your intent is honest and you are dedicated. For women who want to switch professions, or start a venture on their own, it’s not as glamorous as it sounds. There are going to be ups and downs, but as long as you have the belief and conviction in what you are doing, success will be yours. Everything involves risks, even a corporate job has the risks of downsizing, so just go with your gut and success will come your way.

From being an MBA, to working as an investment banker and then starting your own company, you’ve had quite an eventful journey. Tell us about it. From Wall Street to Film City, it has been an interesting journey for me. When I lived in the US, I used to work with film studios and spent a lot of time working with Universal Studios and Time Warner, which spurred my interest in the field of media. The more I understood the business, the more I got interested in it. But, it was a move that I definitely did not anticipate. My company was born from a small idea and my initial office was at a Gloria Jeans outlet, where the ambience, energy and vibrancy of the coffee shop helped me go that extra mile to start Bottomline Media Pvt. Ltd.

You’ve been associated with Time Warner, Universal Studio, Red Chillies Entertainment and Dharma Productions. What is it like to working with so many big names from the film industry? It was a pleasure to work with these people. For me, it was challenging to come up with something new every time and that continues to be the most exciting part.

>> Tanaaz tells us why working with Shahrukh Khan has been an engaging experience

What pushed you to switch from being an investment banker, to marketing Bollywood (and even Hollywood) films? Working at Wall Street was a dream come true. I started with the media sector and all my deals were with US media giants. My move to Mumbai was not planned and in fact, it was a family emergency that brought me back to the city. Here, the opportunities were limitless. For me, every day poses a question: “Why don’t I do something more?” Give us an insight into the world of Wall Street — books and films often depict it to be a fast-paced, high-flying life. Do these fictional accounts come close to real life? Wall Street is definitely similar to glimpses of what you have heard about, read and seen in films. It is the only place that teaches you discipline, helps you learn how to pay attention to detail and how to dot your i’s and cross your t’s. From early morning breakfasts and power dressing, to crazy 20-hour days, life at Wall Street was an amazing roller coaster ride. The absolute closest to my experience is

the narrative of the book Monkey Business, which pulls off Wall Street’s suspenders and gives the you the inside skinny on life as an investment banker, where the promised land is always another 20-hour work day and lap dance away. Changing careers is no mean feat and you switched your profession after working as an investment banker. Did it take a lot of courage? Changing careers was actually a long process.

It took me almost eight months to muster the courage to quit my investment banking job at Wall Street and to structure the details of what my company was going to look like. It was serendipity when things just started falling into place. It was initially a culture shock for me to adapt to new timings, cultures, styles of marketing and the film industry. Even today, it takes a lot of courage. Luckily for me, I’ve had a lot of well-wishers, who have guided me through my ups and downs and even now, give me advice from time-to-time.

What is the one project that you’ve really liked working on? Working on Ra.One, Chennai Express and now, Happy New Year, has been the most fun, as I got to work with Shahrukh (Khan). He encourages you to experiment with new avenues of marketing, and because he is such a marketing genius, you learn a lot from him. My biggest achievements in the field of marketing were with his film, where he let me create the first ever Bollywood film themed happy meal with McDonald’s and a video game for Sony Play Station. Marketing as a profession often invokes a negative response. What is the biggest misconception that you think most people have about the profession? People think marketing is easy, glamorous and does not involve much work. But, marketing requires a lot of research, reading and creative input that helps create an entire campaign. You wouldn’t even be reading this newspaper today, if several people had not marketed it correctly for you to purchase it. What does the future hold for you? The future holds a lot of new, interesting spaces and ventures. Producing, private equity and something that will surprise everyone here… all I can say is wait and watch!

ExtEnd thEir shElf lifE Here are a few tips to extend the shelf life of makeup. n Dry is good: As far as makeup is concerned, keeping it away from any external moisture is a good idea, as this prevents the growth of bacteria. So, if you are used to storing and applying your makeup in the bathroom, we suggest you switch to a dressing table, or apply your makeup in front of another mirror and store your makeup in your closet. It may be inconvenient, but it will help extend the life of your products. n Keep it cool: Extreme weather, especially heat, can cause makeup products to spoil quickly. Store your makeup in a cool, dry place, as heat can cause germs and bacteria to breed faster and can even affect the texture of your products, making them split or separate. n Muscle power: Ensure that you screw on the lids of all your makeup containers really tightly, so as to prevent them from being contaminated by dust, bacteria and moisture. n No cushioning: While it is great to wash your makeup brushes regularly, don’t dry them on a towel, as this makes them prone to mildew, which will eventually get transferred into your makeup and skin. n Use & throw: If you use sponges, which we recommend, purchase them in bulk from wholesale dealers and dispose them after one or two uses. This will ensure that your skin and products both stay free of bacteria and germs.

EMMY STYLE

hen it’s past its expiration date, makeup can damage your skin. From pimples and irritated skin, to more serious problems such as eye infections, you put your health at risk when you use makeup that is past its prime. Take a look at the average shelf life of commonly used beauty products to get the most out of them without damaging your skin.

are applied as creams, but dry as powder), spoil faster than most makeup. Creams breed bacteria faster and so, put you at a greater risk of skin problems than their powder-based counterparts. If you notice a chalky white or gray film on the product, or find that it is difficult to extract and apply from its tube, it is time to toss it out.

mascara

lipstick & lip gloss

Leaving the house without a slick of mascara is unimaginable for several women, which is why you should know that you have more things to worry about than your mascara drying out in the tube. Every time you pull the wand out and return it back to the tube, the bristles trap bacteria and dust particles, which make their way to the product in the tube and later on, into your eyes. Unsurprisingly, once opened, mascara has a shelf life of just four to six months, but we suggest replacing yours every two to three to save your eyes from irritation, redness and/or conjunctivitis.

If the product feels gloopy, tugs on your lips or makes your lips sting and feel itchy after application, it is a sign that your lipstick or lip gloss is past its prime. Another indicator of spoilt lip products is a strong, oily smell that resembles cooking oil and streaky application of the product. Although they usually last a year, exposure to bacteria and moisture can speed up their expiration.

facE powdEr Compared to other beauty products, face powders last the longest. With a shelf life of around 1½-2 years, pressed powders and compacts are worth their price tag. You will know that it is time to toss them out when you notice them changing colour and/ or developing a waxy film, making application difficult.

EyE pEncils Whether you use eye pencils on your waterline or on your eyelid, you are dealing with one of the most delicate parts of your body, so it’s wise to be extra cautious. They usually last a year, but

it is a good idea to replace your eye pencil every three months. Since it comes in contact with the mucous in your eyes, the bacteria that breeds on the surface of the pencil can cause dangerous eye infections. Regularly sharpen your eye pencils and throw them out as soon as they develop a white film that can’t be sharpened away.

crEam products Cream blushes, eyeshadows and powders (that

foundation All liquid foundations are water-based, which means that bacteria will breed quicker in foundation than in most other beauty products. With an average shelf life of a year, you know foundation has gone bad when it smells funky, separates into two layers and feels greasy on application. Sometimes, you may find that the colour has changed as well. If your skin feels irritated after application, toss out your foundation immediately.

We loved Kelly’s look in 2012 so we were looking forward to seeing her this year. But, for someone who’s on a style police team, Kelly does not do very well. Sure, she’s still rocking her chic lavender hair, but the dress fails somewhere between the goth inspired lace, mid-length sleeves and the tablecloth inspired, high-low bottom.

Seth Meyers called the Golden Globes host and comedian Beyonce, and while she does rock a popstar/ diva vibe in this metallic dress, it just didn’t wow us. Her hair seems to have taken the chic out of the messy chic look, and while she does look gorgeous, we wish she had chosen something slightly bolder.

sarah hyland

We know a lot of people are going gaga over Sarah’s outfit, but we’re going to go ahead and give the Modern Family star’s get-up a thumbs down. The crop top is surprisingly pretty, even though we’re so over the trend, and orange seems to suit the star, but the look is a little too dressed down for an Emmy event. While her toned midriff adds a youthful touch to the look, the billowing, slightly creased orange skirt ages her — and so does her severe top knot.

«

laura prEpon

Orange is the New Black star Laura Prepon gave her tan prison suit a skip and ditched the geek glasses to wow us in this gorgeous emerald tone. We love that she chose a colour that suits her skin tone so well, so we’ll forgive the little extra sheen and the slightly colour-blocked peplum flaps placed over most of it. We hate, hate, hate the collar-flap and wish she had cut it off, but her low, side chignon and fresh faced makeup makes her look like a dream, collar or no collar.

Sofia very rarely disappoints us and its safe to say that she didn’t do so this time either. We spent ages ogling over her gorgeous white gown and we’re really jealous, because it hugs every curve of her voluptuous figure like a dream. The strapless, floor length gown had a slightly too structured top but it worked on Sofia, as did the somewhat heavy silver line near the waist. Stick to the mermaid fits Sofia, we love them on you. Love what you do One of the easiest ways to succeed in your career is to find a job that you love. So, that means quitting the instant you realise that you hate your job, right? Not so fast! Dev Goswami gives you a few tips that you should try before you hand in your resignation letter

E

very woman has her own share of likes and dislikes — and this means that you will never find a job that checks every box, or one that will help you avoid all the nittygritties that you’re not fond of. What you will get, and what you should look for, is a compromise, where you are motivated and happy about your work. But, not liking your job doesn’t always stem from you choosing the wrong one. You could simply be focussing a little too much on the aspects of your job that you dislike. If you’re in such a situation, read what we have to say before looking for a new job.

>> If you are depressed at work, quitting is not the only answer. Make your job more interesting with our suggestions

think oF the PoSitiveS Take a trip down memory lane and think of the reason you applied for this job in the first place. From being a valuable addition to your CV, to getting the chance to work with experts in your chosen field, the reasons people pick jobs that they don’t love differ and can range from wanting to make more money, to having no other option. However, thinking about the positive ways in which your job will help you advance in your professional career can motivate you to stay put at your current job. However, if you believe that you have achieved or received whatever it was that you wanted from this job, we recommend you explore other avenues.

make FriendS You might think of yourself as a loner, but everyone needs company. Feeling lonely at work might make you hate your job. Go out with your colleagues for an after-work coffee, shop together and gossip a little — yes, we’re serious. You’ll be in better spirits and will look forward to going to work every day. >> Before you decide to quit your job, think about how you can make your job more interesting

especially those in the corporate world, might not allow you to do this, but in fields such as media, marketing, advertising and fashion, there is a lot of creative freedom. Make some time to work on your own project, but do keep your boss in the loop. Even if your boss isn’t on board, he/ she will see that you are willing to do so something new and give you a new assignment or more responsibilities. It’s a win win situation!

Then think of the portions of your salary that you can use to go shopping, dining at a fancy restaurant and if you feel that you can afford it, actually do so! Yes, we know that money can’t buy you happiness, but what it can do is provide temporary satisfaction and motivate you to continue until you find a job that is perfect for you, as well as financially rewarding.

PerSonaliSe your deSk One of the best ways to beat the work blues is by looking forward to coming to work. Apart from making friends, another way you can do this is by personalising your desk. Put up pictures of your loved ones, get cute coasters and mugs and use colourful post-its to make your work station attractive and welcoming.

challenge yourSelF Doing the same set of tasks or performing similar actions, day after day, can get monotonous, even when you love what you do. It is human nature to look for something new to do every day and not having the opportunity to challenge yourself, might be the reason why you hate your current job. Some jobs,

think oF the money You might think that we’re being materialistic, but this actually works. If you find yourself constantly wondering why you are still at your current job, think of the money that you make.

PluS Size collection by Femella

My friend and I have been working together for a while now and a very important project came up recently. While she comes up with the best ideas and is quite vocal about what she wants done, she is very bad with deadlines. She never gets any work done on time and often asks me for help an hour before the deadline, citing creative blocks, headaches and other illnesses as her reasons. I didn’t mind helping her out the first few times, but it is becoming a bad

habit. This really stresses me out, as we are both responsible for the project and constantly helping her also throws my schedule off track. What should I do? — Deepti Periwal, Mahim (W) dear deepti, By the look of it, your colleague seems to be taking advantage of your helpful nature. She knows that you take full accountability for the project and wouldn’t want it to suffer at any cost, which is why she runs to

you at the nth moment, fully aware that you won’t refuse her help. Next time she comes to you fo help, coolly tell her that you have an urgent task to finish and won’t be able to help her out. If she doesn’t take the hint, speak to your bosses, as her poor performance shouldn’t affect their perception of you. Send your questions to womanwise@afternoons.in before Wednesday

« TOp 5: ways TO

use Old Mugs

From tea cups to coffee mugs, if you’re looking for innovative ways to use old mugs, Dev Goswami has some great tips for you pen stand

This is the most obvious way to reuse an old mug. Simply decorate the mug (or use it as it is, if you don’t care much for personalisation) and use it to hold pens, pencils and other stationery. You can also place a mug on your kitchen counter and use it to store cutlery. Put in 3-4 layers of thick thermocol (to create a 4-5 inch base) and it will store knives safely.

store jewellery

Small jewellery, such as earrings and pendants, and accessories, such as hair clips and bobby pins, can be difficult to store without losing them. So, paint a mug in a particular colour and use it to store all accessories and jewellery of that particular shade. Make sure to store the earrings and pendants in tiny paper or plastic envelopes to prevent them from getting mixed up. Following this tip will make it easier to match your jewellery and accessories to your outfits. All you have to do is pick up a mug in the corresponding colour!

Muggy business

Mug recipes are quick and convenient, especially if you are looking for single-serve portions. Also, there’s no denying that they look adorable! So, Shirley Mistry brings you five mug recipes to whip-up in a jiffy

hisk a few ingredients in a cup, place it in the microwave for a few minutes and voilà — you have a delicious meal in a matter of minutes. The best part about mug recipes (apart from being really quick to put together), is that they are perfect for one or two servings, making the recipes easy for people who live alone, as you won’t have to deal with excess leftovers. Take a look at our favourite mug recipes.

use as dips

Coffee mugs and tea cups make for the perfect utensils to hold dips. So, at your next house-party, instead of using several tiny bowls — which also increases the risk of spillage — simply decant your dips in mugs and cups and pass them around.

gift theM

Before you start calling us cheap, hear what we have to say — use an old coffee mug (as long as it doesn’t look too used and is not broken) as a gift hamper. From chocolates, tea bags and cookies, to condiments and makeup, just toss everything in a mug, cover it up with wrapping paper and finish with a net and a card. The hamper will look cute and thoughtful.

as a pot

Old coffee mugs make great flower pots. Not only will they look cute, the size ensures that you can place them anywhere — from the window sill to your bathroom. Drill a small hole at the bottom to let the water drain out, pour tiny stones at the bottom to facilitate drainage, add some soil and your mug is ready for a seed! Alternatively, if you want to avoid drilling a hole, just ensure that you tip the mug over every day to drain the excess water.

« Dear grace, i have a problem...

dear grace,

My boyfriend’s friend has been hitting on me and recently went as far as to ask me out. I turned him down, and politely told him to avoid behaving like this in the future. It seems like the matter has been resolved, but I’m not sure whether I should tell my boyfriend. The problem is that he has a very bad temper, and tends to make mountains out of molehills. Telling him about this will drag a resolved situation out back into focus, but at the same time I am

uncomfortable about having to hide it from him. What should I do? — nandini das, bandra dear nandini, Even if your boyfriend has a terrible temper, you should tell him about what happened. Have you stopped to wonder what will happen if he finds out from someone else? Since it was his friend who asked you out, the likelihood of this happening is quite high. The best thing to do is to explain the situation calmly and

emphasise that you have already dealt with it. Before telling him, make him promise not to overreact. Don’t go into unnecessary details and avoid parts that might antagonise him. Once you’ve finished telling him the story, let him know that you handled the situation and everything is under control. It is a tough situation, but handle it tactfully and everything will be okay. Or should I confront her directly?” — Aarti a) You should definitely tell HR about the missing items, but keep your theories about what is going on and who is involved to yourself. b) Tell a couple of close co-workers what you suspect and set up a discreet watch. R

ating agency Moody's expects the GDP to grow at 5.1% in the first quarter (April-June) of current fiscal, better than 4.7% clocked a year ago. "The Indian economy likely accelerated in the second quarter of 2014. We expect GDP growth of 5.1%. Most parts of the economy are improving. Capital expenditure could surprise on the upside," Moody's Analytics said in a report. The Indian economy grew by 4.7% in the April-June quarter last year and the growth rate was also 4.7% for full 2013-14. After a gap of several years, the Indian economy

grew by sub-5% in 2012-13 and 2013-14. The official data for June quarter of 2014 will be released on Friday. "We anticipate a steady return to potential growth by 2016. India's new Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken office at an opportune time," Moody's Analytics said, adding that the economy is in the early stages of a cyclical upturn. It said growth could lift towards 7% with some modest economic reforms. Moody's Analytics projected that even without the government help, the economy would grow by around 5% in 2014 and close to 6% in 2015.

"An improving economy, coupled with Modi's strong electoral mandate, provides an ideal platform from which to implement his agenda," it added. Industrial production is growing at a solid pace and should be mirrored in the cyclical upturn in GDP, it said. Outlining the signs of economic upturn, Moody's Analytics said exports and imports have also rebounded and business investment could surprise on the upside. "Confidence lifted with the May election result, and production of capital goods has surged in recent months. We expect GDP growth hit 5.1% in the three months to June," it said.

Tough Sebi Rejects 15 Consent Pleas Seeking Settlement Total number of rejected applications for settlement by Sebi has touched 262, ever since the revised rules for consent framework came into effect in May, 2012 By A Business Reporter

M

arkets Regulator Sebi, sustaining its no-nonsense stance has turned down 15 consent pleas, including that of certain entities accused in the Pyramid Saimira Theatre case, to settle proceedings related to alleged violations of securities market norms. According to Sebi, the 15 applications have been rejected "as they are not found to be in consonance" with its norms on consent mechanism which were issued in May, 2012. "The pending proceedings in these cases will continue in accordance with law," it added. The 15 consent applications include four pleas involving 9 individuals who have been charged of market manipulation activities related to shares of Pyramid Saimira. In its latest update, for the period

June 13–August 5, 2014, Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has also rejected settlement applications of Keynote Corporate Services, Keynote Capitals, Brooks Laboratories, Onelife Capital Advisors and Dani Finlease. With this, the total number of rejected applications for settlement by Sebi has touched 262, ever since the revised rules for consent framework came into effect on May 25, 2012. These individuals are: Raju G Shah, Rajesh Jayantilal, Shah, Nirmal Rohitbai Shah, Shailesh Jayantilal Shah, Binaben Shaileshkumar Shah, Ritaben Rohitkumar Shah, Manishaben Rajeshkumar Shah, Sachin Jayantilal Shah and Devang R Shah. Besides, the market regulator has rejected to settle cases against Atul Ranchal, Rajesh Mahajan, Ketan Shah who are alleged of violating 'Prohibition of Fraudulent

RIL To Save $450 Mn/Yr By Importing Ethane From US By A Business Reporter

eliance Industries will save about USD 450 million annually by importing 1.5 million tons ethane from US for its petrochemical plant, says a report. Imported Ethane will substitute its current propane imports and a portion of naphtha used for ethylene production. "Given depressed US ethane prices and rising production, we estimate an annual saving of USD 450 million from this feedstock substitution from FY18," CLSA said in a research report. Reliance recently announced its plans to import 1.5 million tons per annum of ethane from North America which will be used as a feedstock in its existing crackers in India. Imports could start from end-2016. According to CLSA "While propane is a globally traded commodity, trade of ethane is a relatively new trend." Reliance's current ethylene capacity stands at

about 1.9 million tons per annum. Of this, 0.8 million ton (40 %) is gas (C2-C3) based while the remaining uses naphtha as a feedstock. "As per our estimate, domestic natural gas makes up about 35 % of current feedstock for its gas based capacity with imported Propane accounting for the rest," CLSA said. Reliance is also likely to convert a large portion of its 0.9 million tons naphtha based Hazira cracker into dual feed to enable acceptance of imported ethane as a feedstock. "Given current US ethane price of about USD 3, we estimate landed ethane price of USD 9 per million British thermal unit. Using current imported propane and naphtha price of USD 17 and 20 per mmBtu respectively, this arbitrage will reduce RIL's FY18 blended feedstock cost significantly. We estimate annual savings from FY18 of USD 450 million (USD 240 per ton) i.e. 8 % of FY14 Ebitda," CLSA said.

and Unfair Trade Practices' norms in the matter of Brooks Laboratories. Sebi has also rejected the plea of Brooks Laboratories charged of fraudulent trading and disclosure rules violations. The other applications rejected are of Keynote Corporate Services which is facing proceedings for fraudulent trading practices and violations of merchant banking norms. In May last year, Sebi had tightened its regulations for settlement through consent framework, while the regulator has been making public the names of the rejected applications since January this year. Under Sebi's consent mechanism, firms and individuals can seek to settle the cases with the regulator after the payment of certain charges, without admission or denial of any guilt.

By Sandeep Hattangadi

Tell us about your character in 'Ek Veer Ki Ardaa...Veera' I will be seen playing Megha, Ranvi’s mentor, who has now decided to move to Mumbai to make a mark in music. Ranvi will soon be participating in a reality show and Megha will mentor and guide him during this journey.

What is Megha's background? Megha is a famous singer who was boycotted from the industry due to her starry tantrums. She meets Ranvi and realises his potential and agrees to mentor him. This she takes up as a personal challenge and wants to make him really popular. At the same time, she is also rooting for a comeback in the industry.

Fawad Khan again

‘Zindagi’ is delivering yet another new show with India’s new heart-throb, Fawad Khan, entering Indian households again this time with 'Behadd'.The actor who has charmed his way into our hearts with his natural acting and handsome looks as Zaroon Junaid in ‘Zindagi Gulzar Hai’ will enthrall us with his role as the suave Jamal Ahmad aka Jo in the blockbuster telefilm ‘Behadd’. Tune into Zindagi on August 30 at 10.15 pm. The telefilm, written by renowned author Umera Ahmed, will also have talented actresses Nadia Jamil and Sajjal Ali in central roles along with Fawad.

What made you accept this show as your television debut? I am playing a music mentor in the show. The character is very reflective of me and how I am in real life. I am really excited to be making my fiction debut with 'Veera' as the character comes easily to me and I am exploring it through the show.

How difficult was it to face the television camera? I have done many music videos, so a television shoot was a bit on the same graph. I had a blast shooting for the show. The co-stars and the unit were great. I have been on television earlier, as a judge in the music hunt reality show ‘Bathroom Singer’ on Sahara Filmy.

Akbar’s tricks

Big Magic's 'Har Mushkil Ka Hal Akbar Birbal' has an unusual chatpata hunt for fans this week. With an interesting turn of events, Akbar misplaces Rani Sahiba’s prized wedding ring. Taken aback with this revelation, Akbar tries all the tricks in the book to get the ring off Rani Saheba’s finger.

How many episodes will you be appearing in? I have just started shooting for my segment. The length and importance of my role all depends on the channel and the creative directors of the show. Given the opportunity, would you like to anchor or judge a music reality show? Yes, I most certainly would. In fact, I am eagerly waiting for such an offer.

High performance dance show C

anadian dancer Tara Jean Popowich, who is the latest contestant to be eliminated from 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 7', feels that Indian dancers are good performers as compared to their Western counterparts. Tara entered the celebrity dance reality show, which is an Indian adaptation of international talent hunt 'Dancing With the Stars', as a wild card contestant with choreographer partner Jack. "I loved my one-and-half months stint on the show. It was stressful because we had to rehearse for long hours. I am amazed to see that in India everyone is mad about dance. Even the performance quality in Indian dancers is high," Tara, the winner of 'So You Think You Can Dance', told PTI. The international dancer was pitted against young wonder Akshat Singh in the face-off. Tara's radio act could not impress judges much as compared to Akshat's performance as a crocodile.

ARDIFF: Suresh Raina smashed his first overseas century as India began their one-day campaign on a resounding note when they trounced England by 133 runs in the second ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series at Sophia Gardens, here on Wednesday. Put into bat, India, who are looking to put their Test debacle behind them in the limited-overs format, rode Raina's 75-ball 100 to post a challenging 304 for six in 50 overs. The 144-run fifth-wicket partnership between Raina, who registered his fourth ODI century, and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (52) was the highlight of the Indian innings.

BATTING JINX

Rain forced a delayed start to the England innings and the Duckworth-Lewis method revised the hosts' target to 295 in 47 overs. The hosts were bundled for 161 in 38.1 overs as Indian bowlers for once made their presence felt in English conditions. England opener Alex Hales (40), who was handed his debut cap by skipper Alastair Cook in the morning, was the highest scorer in a disappointing scorecard. The hosts slumped from 54 for no loss to 85 for five and the slide continued with the overcast conditions doing little to save the batting collapse. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (4-28) was India's leading wickettaker after medium-pacer Mohammad Shami (2-32) did the early damage. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (2-38) took care of the finishing act while new-ball bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1-30) and Raina (1-12) also picked up a wicket each. Shami started the rot in his third over by sending back Cook LBW for 19 and cleaning up Ian Bell for 1. Bhuvneshwar cleaned bowled Joe Roger Federer returns a shot to Marinko Matosevic of Australia during the first round of the 2014 U.S. Open tennis tournament. [R] Victoria Azarenka of Belarus returns a shot against Misaki Doi of Japan during the first round match.

FINALLY BROKEN

Root for 4 and Jadeja then turned on the heat to make short work of the England middle and lower-order. The first match of the series was washed off due to persistent rains in Bristol while the focus now shifts to the third ODI at Trent Bridge on Saturday. Earlier, England made a flying start to the game and there were back-toback maidens to start proceedings for England. Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma were pegged back by some impeccable bowling by Anderson and Woakes. The seaming conditions had left India like spider on a hot plate. Brief Scores: India 304/6 in 50 overs [Suresh Raina 100, MS Dhoni 52, Rohit Sharma 52, Chris Woakes 4/52] bt England 161 all out in 38.1 overs [Alex Hales 40, Ravindra Jadeja 4/28, R. Ashwin 2/38] by 133 runs via D/L Method.

India’s Suresh Raina celebrates on reaching 50 runs during the One Day International match against England’s at the SWALEC cricket ground in Cardiff, Wales on Wednesday.

KARACHI: Pakistan's banned cricketers Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif could face problems convincing the ICC to put aside their suspension periods when they complete their five-year ban term in August 2015. Reliable sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have told PTI that while the board was preparing to make a request to the ICC once again to allow the third banned player, Mohammad Aamir, to start training and playing some club or domestic cricket before his ban ends in August 2015, they were also concerned about Butt and Asif's situation. The three Pakistani cricketers were given five-year bans in February, 2011 by the anticorruption tribunal of the ICC for involvement in the spot-fixing scandal during Pakistan's tour to England in 2010, leading to immediate suspensions of the trio by the ICC in September that year after the Lords Test. But while Aamir owing to his young age (he is 22 now) was given only a five-year ban, Asif has also been given a two-year suspended ban sentence and Butt three years of suspended ban.

EW YORK: Five-time champions Roger Federer and Serena Williams reached the US Open second round but found themselves sharing the headlines with teenage upstarts CiCi Bellis and Borna Coric. Federer claimed his 50th win of 2014 as the 17-time major winner, playing in his 60th successive Grand Slam and bidding to become the oldest major winner in over 40 years, defeated Australia's Marinko Matosevic 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) to register his 23rd win in 24 night matches in New York yesterday. "It was a bit more difficult than I thought it was going to be in the third set. Marinko has a big game," said second seeded Federer who hit 10 aces and 41 winners and was cheered on by basketball legend Michael Jordan. Federer will face another Australian, big-serving Sam Groth, for a place in the last 32 as he continues his bid for a record sixth US Open but first since 2008. Women's world number one Williams, the double defending champion who is also seeking a sixth title, was equally untroubled, defeating 18-year-old compatriot

UMBAI: St. Pius X, Mulund were crowned champions of the under 16 MSSA division three inter school football tournament held at Cooperage Ground on Wednesday. St. Pius X beat Thakur Vidya Mandir, Kandivali 3-1 in a thrilling encounter as both teams were playing their first ever final. The first half saw a host of chances being created by St. Pius but they just could not find the back of the net. Majority of the chances for Pius were created by center forward Rahul Johny who posed the biggest challenge for Thakur Vidya Mandir. Johny had an astonishing five shots on goal in the first half as his side clearly looked the better team but Thakur with their tough defending didn't let Pius score thus ending the first half goalless. Johny then secured the crucial opening goal for

Pius before Vidya Mandir levelled scores before the Pius lads got going again with a superb close range finish from substitute McLean Fernandes. In the dying minutes of the game St. Pius X sealed the deal with their third goal of the game scored by Himanshu Nautiyal. Carlton D'Souza the coach of Pius said, “The joy of winning a tournament is always the greatest.” Carlton also spoke about the journey saying, “The journey has been great and the team has worked hard and put in a lot of effort and time.” Rahul Johnny who scored the opening goal said, “I was not trapping the ball well in the first half, I created many chances but just could not finish.” Rahul was also the highest goal scorer of the tournament with 11 goals to his name. EW DELHI: All but written off after a string of injuries wrecked havoc on his career four years ago, enigmatic boxer Akhil Kumar staged a remarkable comeback to make the 10-member Indian men's team for the Asian Games scheduled to be held from September 19 in Incheon, Korea. The 33-year-old, who rose to fame in the bantamweight 56kg category, has moved up a division to 60kg for the September 19 to October 4 event, the two-day trials for which ended in Patiala today. "I am back and I promise temperature inside the ring will go up when I step in," the boxer, known for his daredevil style of fighting with an open guard, told PTI after his selection.

In the women's team, five-time world champion M C Mary Kom (51kg) has made the cut, putting behind the disappointment of her omission from the Commonwealth Games squad. She had lost to eventual bronze-medallist Pinki Jangra in the trials. CWG silver-medallist L Sarita Devi took the 60kg spot as expected. But the star of the day was undoubtedly the comeback-man Akhil, a 2006 Commonwealth Games gold-medallist and 2008 Olympic quarter-finalist, who had been laid low by a string of injuries, which forced him to skip the trials for the 2012 London Olympics. But the experienced pugilist's never-say-die spirit finally paid off as he impressed one and all at the Asian Games trials in Patiala. Akhil got the better of medallist Vikas Malik in a convincing manner before winning the final bout against Rohit Tokas on Wednesday.

You feel that with the maximum participation of six players in the playing eleven, the league is been overshadowed by overseas players. Is this the best way to improve football in India by allowing more overseas players to participate? The organisers of the ISL need to start gaining attention. Of course this is easier by having some big international names joining the squads in order to stand for and prove quality.

Germany has emerged as a powerhouse this World Cup, and produced the best of the players via the Bundesliga, have you found the time to study the Indian way of football, and what are the steps that a champion national side like should take to boost its prospects internationally? I have just arrived and am only now going to study the Indian way of football. How do you find the composition of

the Mumbai side which you are a part off and how do you foresee the prospects of a league like this in five years time? What the future will look like is hard to say, we have to see how the first season goes. At the moment it seems to me that the team is put together very well.

What are your expectations of playing in India especially since the football pitches across the country are sub-standard? What is your opinion on playing on astro-turf? This is part of the whole adventure and I didn’t expect to find EU standards here. Can the bar of domestic football be raised with a league like this and a country like India which is ranked over 150, what is needed to improve its ranking? Such a league is a good first step gain more popularity (especially internationally). We as players on the pitch need to do the rest.

have decided to give away cash prizes to amateur runners too to encourage bigger participation. The entry fee is Rs 500 per head," said Bruno Goveas, whose firm is in charge of executing the event. FC Goa not in hurry for foreign tie-up: Dattaraj

PANAJI: Co-owner of Goan franchise of the Indian Super League FC Goa Dattaraj Salgaocar today said that they were in no hurry to join hands with a foreign club. Dattaraj told reporters here that they would join hands with a foreign club only if they add value to their project in the long term.Dattaraj, along with other two co-

owners of the club, had visited Manchester earlier this year and had explored the possibility of a collaboration with the English Premier League champions."We are currently assessing our weakness and strength. All clubs offer expertise for a fee and it is easy to tie-up after paying a million (dollars). But we are looking to partner with

a top club which has the long term interest of India," the FC Goa president said. They were in talks with Liverpool FC and Ajax Amsterdam too but both sides could not agree that they were getting the best deal."We do not want to partner with somebody who would give up the relationship soon," he said.

‘WAITED FOR TWENTY YEARS FOR THAT www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 2014

How important was winning the World Team Championships in Glasgow? It was definitely important. It was a feeling, which I had been waiting for, for almost twenty years and I have been playing for India since 1991 and I have played a number of finals but this was one thing missing from my CV. It feels more complete now with this great victory.

How was your experience of participating in the tournament? It was a good event. The event was planned by the World Billiards and the International Billiards Snooker Federation together. I would say the concept of the event is very interesting because I have noticed that whenever countries participate as a team and when the country tag is involved, automatically there is more passion among the spectators and players. So it would be a very big step if the World Billiards and IBSF can take this event forward and ensure participation from more countries. They plan to have it every four years and by that time they can formulate a proper frame work where they can have the event on a larger scale.

What makes India a global powerhouse in billiards? India has always had a rich tradition of billiards right from the time of Sir Wilson Jones who won the first individual world title by any sportsman in this country. He has been my coach and he has coached so many other players in India and the tradition has carried on. India has a deep following for billiards and there is a niche crowd who understand and follow the sport. Same goes in Australia and England. The sport is popular in the Commonwealth countries.

WINNING FEELING’ SPORTLIGHT

Arjuna award winner DEVENDRA JOSHI speaks exclusively to DANNON MARTIS on wining the World Team Billiards Championships in Glasgow and why his CV, now has a complete look. He also provides details how to promote the game among youngsters and also gives his views on the recently concluded Billiards Premier League and why Mike Russell is special to him.

this league can't be compared to any other league in the country because you cannot have a sporting league played on handicaps. It has to be on level terms. You can grade the players as A, B and C category players but the A category needs to play among themselves and so forth. I am sure they shall take it positively and we might see some change next year but it is a welcome sign.

You see so much enthusiasm among so many players, the team owners and everybody together. It is a good step forward.

What is your assessment of the snooker league? I am sure there would be more takers and the prize money will be bigger and we are grateful that Videocon came forward in whatever way they can in this first event and I hope they are satisfied with the mileage that we could give them for the amount of money that they have put into billiards and I am sure they might think of putting their money in snooker in a much bigger way. We just hope we can give them the required publicity to get into snooker. What steps can be taken to popularise

Do you think the Billiards Premier League will help to attract youngsters? I would say it's a step in the right direction. Alot more twisting, turning but since it's the first year you can give credit to the association for at least trying and going out and making this happen. From the next year, they would try to have this league not on a handicap basis. That's why I always say that

billiards across the globe? This first thing is to have a good price money in the sport so that a lot of young people can come and take up the sport. Today, young people don't like playing or working hard just for fun because they want rewards at the end of the day. It happens in every other sport. The financial angle is a big factor and the moment the world body is able to rope in a corporate sponsor and a proper schedule with big prize money, you will see amazing players come up in the sport. There also some amazing players in the U.K who are not participating actively because the prize money is not that great. It becomes a logistical problem for people to travel around the world to play in events. The peak of the popularity of billiards was in the nineties when billiards had a full flegded pro tour which was sponsor by ITC through their Gold Flake brand. But when the decision was taken by the government and various countries around the world that tobacco sponsorship should be banned in sports, it affected billiards more than any other sport. This intiative which has been taken by the World Billiards and International Billiards Snooker Federation coming together as one to develop billiards as a sport is great and I think within the next three to four years we can see ourselves moving ahead.

INTERVIEW

‘We spent from our pockets to participate in the tournament’ Ashok Shandilya describes his feelings on winning the World Team Billiards Championships in Glasgow, the role of two special people in his life, and a whole lot more. How was the feeling after winning the World Team Billiards Championships in Glasgow ? This is the second time I have won the World Championship title. First I won in 2002 and I lost many finals in between. But it is the question of playing for the country and wining a gold medal for the country. That's the biggest high we can get and to do this on the eve of Independence Day. What bigger gift than this can we give to the country. Describe your experience of participating in the tournament ? The tournament was very well organised and the venue was good. It was a very satisfying experience as some of the players were of very good quality and as part of the India B team, we went on our expenses. You can imagine the pressure on us

cause we were investing one and half lakh rupees. We thought if we win a medal we will get something from the government.

With the snooker league coming up in 2015 . Do you feel there will be more takers for the snooker league ? Seeing the atmosphere here and the

INTERVIEW

popularity. I think there will definitely be more takers for the Snooker Premier League. When you are not playing billiards. How do you unwind ? I want to unwind now. But after wining the World Championship in Glasgow. I directly flew in for the

Billiards Premier League. Actually, I dont wanna see my cue for at least ten days cause there is so much pressure when we play. I like to unwind by going out with my family and listening to songs. My schedule is so packed that I get very little time to wind. Who has been your inspiration? There have been so many inspirations but if I had to pick one it would be Sir Wilson Jones. He has taught me to play the game and he is my guru. Today, if I am standing and talking to you it is because of Sir Wilson. Two other players who I have seen playing and have inspired me are Geet Sethi and Michael Ferreira. I have played with Michael and he backed me in 1998 when I won two Asian Games gold medals. Michael and Geet both have supported me a lot.

Elite sprinters attack ground to maximise speed W

A NEW LOW

MK Dons' Antony Kay [L] tussles with Manchester United's Javier Hernandez during the League Cup in England.

Man United humiliated by MK Dons in League Cup

M

ILTON KEYNES (UK): Manchester United sank to new depths when they crashed out of the League Cup in the second round following a 4-0 defeat at third-division Milton Keynes Dons. United had announced the signing of Angel di Maria from Real Madrid in a Britishrecord ÂŁ59.7 million ($98 million, 75 million euros) deal shortly before kick-off, but they were brought down to earth with a painful bump as a second-string team fell apart at Stadium MK. Will Grigg scored either side of half-time for the League One side before substitute Benik Afobe added a brace of his own to leave a shell-shocked Louis van Gaal still searching for his first competitive win as United manager. "It's a matter of making errors at the wrong moment. When you see the goals against us, we made big errors in the build-up situations that you cannot make," van Gaal told Sky Sports. "You don't have to forget

that we have nine injuries and that we had a very young team. I have seen them trying to do their utmost best, so you cannot expect more of the players." Asked if he had a message for United's fans, van Gaal said: "They have to believe in our philosophy. We are building up a team and you cannot make it in one month, not in one year. "Of course it's very disappointing, but I hope they shall maintain their confidence in the club and our philosophy because that philosophy takes time." United's defeat mirrored what had happened on their last appearance in the second round in 1995, when they fell to third-tier York City, and means a potential path to silverware has been shut off before the end of August. "I'm a little bit in shock, to be walking around and seeing the scoreline," said MK Dons manager Karl Robinson. "It's ridiculous. It's something that dreams are made of for these players." Van Gaal made 10 changes

to his starting XI, with goalkeeper David de Gea the only player to hold onto his place from Sunday's 1-1 draw at Sunderland in the Premier League. The visitors received an early setback when Shinji Kagawa had to go off after a clash of heads and in the 25th minute they gifted their hosts the lead. Jonny Evans, United's captain for the day, passed the ball straight to Ben Reeves inside his own area and the Dons number 10 squared to Grigg for a simple tap-in. The home side were aggrieved not to have been awarded a penalty early in the second half when a shot from Dean Bowditch struck Evans on the arm, but in the 63rd minute they added a second goal. After United again conceded possession cheaply, Grigg sprayed a pass wide to Reeves, who crossed for Grigg to beat De Gea with an outrageous chested finish from 10 yards. There was more misery to come for United, whose seventh-place finish last season was their worst since 1990.

Karthikeyan jumps to sole lead in Abu Dhabi Masters A

BU DHABI: Murali Karthikeyan remained on course to create history after he defeated Grandmaster Sergey Volkov of Russia in the seventh round of Abu Dhabi Masters chess tournament. The victory took 15-year old Karthikeyan to six points out of a possible seven and it is in fact a complete Indian domination with Grandmaster Vidit Santosh Gujrathi and G N Gopal sharing the second spot a half point behind. Karthikeyan's performance rating hit another high as it registered 2830 according to FIDE charts. This effectively means that in this

tournament, Karthikeyan is giving a performance which is better than the rating of world number two Levon Aronian of Armenia. The fourth Grandmaster scalp on the trot also effectively sealed what would be Karthikeyan's third and final Grandmaster norm and the Chennai-based is now in line to enter the elite list of Grandmasters. It was another exciting game by Karthikeyan as he went for a razor-sharp variation in the French defense as white pieces against Volkov. The Russian is a seasoned campaigner and

his cold-water treatment to everything hurled at him did not yield desired results for the Indian. However, with the clock ticking away, Karthikeyan came up with a double piece swap for a rook that only promised some counter-play but the Russian missed the thread of the position and almost immediately blundered. The game lasted 37 moves. Gujrathi faced the Classical variation in the Nimzo Indian defense as black against Rakhmanov and equalised without much ado as the middle game approached.

ASHINGTON: Scientists have unlocked the secret behind Usain Bolt's extraordinary speed - he delivers a firm, rapid punch to the ground! The world's fastest sprinters have unique gait features that account for their ability to achieve fast speeds, scientists have found. Researchers from Southern Methodist University, Dallas suggest that the secret to elite sprinting speeds lies in the distinct limb dynamics sprinters use to elevate ground forces upon footground impact. "Our new studies show that these elite sprinters don't use their legs to just bounce off the ground as most other runners do," said

Ken Clark, lead author of the research from the SMU Locomotor Performance Laboratory. "The top sprinters have developed a wind-up and delivery mechanism to aug-

ment impact forces. Other runners do not do so," Clark said. Previous studies had established that faster runners attain faster speeds by hitting the ground more forcefully than other runners do in relation to their body weight. However, how faster runners are able to do this was unknown. "Elite speed athletes have a running pattern that is distinct," Clark said. "Our data indicate the fastest sprinters each have identified the same solution for maximising speed, which strongly implies that when you put the physics and the biology together, there's only one way to sprint really fast," he said.
