hile the IMD's predictions regarding rainfall have been going awry, the water levels in the lakes have already reached their optimum level. The IMD had earlier predicted occasional, light showers, but since last two days, no rainfall was seen in the city. When ADC contacted the IMD, the officials said there will be few spells of rains and showers across the city and suburbs.

Maximum temperature will be 32 degree celsius and minimum 27 degree celsius.

The BMC has also forecasted intermittent showers in the city and suburbs. A total of 40 complaints of fallen trees registered with the civic body. The water in Powai lake is overflowing while Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar and other major sources of water to Mumbai have been filled abundantly. In 2014, the lakes had received 1,41,049 litres, while this year the lakes have received 3,14,723 litres. There has been no rainfall in the last two days despite various predictions and forecasts. he Rs 206 crore scam involving purchase of chikki and other items supplied to Anganwadi students under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) yesterday took a new twist with reports surfacing of alleged Congress link to the scam. According to sources, the contract for supply of poor quality Suryakanta Chikki was awarded to M K Gawde who is the sole contractor proudly boasts of being an active Congress worker from Vengurla in Sindhudurg district.

Gawde who runs the Suryakanta Sahakari Mahila Sanstha (SSMS) argued that the government's rule of floating tenders for an item worth more than Rs 3 lakh was not practical in chikki’s case. He argued that he had to bear the transport cost too along with the production

cost. He added that they had to transport chikki to far away places like Chandrapur and hence they need to produce maximum quantity to make it economically viable.

He further added that in order to transport the Chikki they need to spend more than Rs 3 lakh for that. Gawde disclosed that they had tried to convince this to Radhika Rastogi who was then head of purchase department but she was adamant on following the rule. Hence in this case they had no alternative other than going by the rate contract system, Gawde added.

Rastogi had stayed the chikki purchase in June 2013 rejecting the rate contract system. She had advised the government to call for a tender. Gawde denied that SSMS had given sub contracts for manufacturing chikki. He argued that SSMS had its own manufacturing plant in Vengurla. However, he admitted

Sachin Sawant that there were several complaints about the chikki’s quality. Gawde stated that they had sent their representatives to the places from where the complaints were received to rectify the mistakes. He further disclosed that the products prepared

by SSMS were air tight and that they can last more than four months.

Meanwhile in a statement released here, Leader of Opposition in Legislative Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil (Congress) accused Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of misleading the state over the ICDS Anganwdi items purchase scam.

Demanding the resignation of Minister for Women and Child Development Pankaja Munde-Palwe, he said that the Chief Minister while speaking to private television news channels had announced that the process of purchasing items in excess of Rs 1 crore was being discontinued from April 1.

Commenting upon the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) issuing notice to principal secretary Women and Child Development Sanjay Kumar, Sawant remarked that the Congress was disappointed with the ACB action as it was seeking clarification from the same person.

Meanwhile the ACB has sought information from Principal Secretary of the Women and Children Development Department Sanjay Kumar on the issue of the purchase by the department.

ACB chief Praveen Dixit said that his department has sought the details in the purchase and its procedure.

Principal Secretary Sanjay Kumar confirmed the development.

Kumar stated that his department had received the letter from the ACB.

Lalit Modi keeps dodging probe agencies with threat to life excuse?

ven as the former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi is in the news about getting assistance in travelling abroad by two heavyweights of the Narendra Modi government, a pertinent question arises: what has kept Lalit Modi away from appearing before the investigating agencies?

Lalit Kumar Modi has been giving the reason of threat to his life even though the security review has cleared that he did not have threat after his security was withdrawn post his visit from South Africa.

A letter written by Mumbai police to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax Department (IT) intelligence unit on September 19, 2010 and September 22, 2010 respectively, states that Lalit gence inputs.

Two held for snatching bags containing Rs 57 lakh worth gold ornaments

he Zone 2 of south Mumbai police nabbed two accused on Thursday for snatching and fleeing with bags containing gold ornaments. Two different cases had occurred between June 13 and June 15 in south Mumbai.

In the first case a bag that contained 125 old ornaments costing about Rs 35 lakh was snatched from a gold dealer on June 13 whereas two days later a similar incident occurred when another businessman walking with a bag containing about Rs 23 lakh worth gold ornaments towards Metro cinema at JS road in south Mumbai was robbed in the same manner.

An officer said, “The police realised the modus operandi

was similar in both the cases.

The investigations were conducted and evidences including the nearby CCTV footages, the statements of the victims and witnesses were conducted.” Initially the the first case was registered at the LT Marg police station under section 379 and 34 of IPC whereas the second case was registered with the Azad Maidan police station under section 392 and 34 of IPC. The Chief Minister said Munde, Minister for Women and Child Development, had sanctioned purchases in February this year as funds provided by the Centre under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) would have expired on March 31.

HE cottage industry carried on in hide-outs across the city and suburbs was flourishing during the days of prohibition. The demand for it then was huge and illicit joints came up in places like Dhobi Talao.

It was claimed, when prohibition was scrapped, spurious liquor business would end.

The situation in the city with regard to the manufacturer and distribution of illicit liquor is not as bad as it was. Bootleggers are however still there doing the dangerous, dirty work. They have developed quite a successful production and distribution plan. The death of over 100 persons who consumed spurious liquor has shown that the bootleggers are quite active. What is not known is that illicit liquor also causes death by slow poisoning.

How is spurious liquor so easily available? How is it no proper preventive steps taken? If the police were more alert and carried out proper raids, there would not have been any poisonous liquor available in the city. It is being said that the police are hand in glove with the bootleggers.

The police conduct mock raids and they maintain reports of them. Production of illicit liquor seems to have increased now and it is imperative that the police must be asked to take suitable steps to end spurious liquor production. It is also necessary that the cost of country made liquor must be reduced. This can happen if there is less tax on liquor.

xactly four decades ago, on this day, Indians had woken up to the news of the declaration of an internal Emergency by the then prime minister, Indira Gandhi (Mrs. Gandhi). The outside world heard of it subsequently. Although declared through a related provision in the Indian constitution, the consequent arrests of politicians belonging to the various opposition parties, suspension of the fundamental rights of citizens, constriction of the judiciary, and significantly censoring the press, were assaults upon the body politic of the country which jolted the Indian citizenry to the realization that the accountability and freedoms guaranteed in a democracy had been significantly curtailed. Clamped upon the country on the pretext to thwart the spiralling civil unrest permeating the country and possibly to negate the Allahabad High Court ruling, which held Mrs. Gandhi guilty, of electoral malpractices and had debarred her from elective office for six years, the Emergency, continued for about nineteen months, after which it was uplifted; the people enthusiastically participated in an accompanying general election, and voted out Mrs. Gandhi (Mrs. Gandhi) and her party from office, thereby outpouring their accrued fury against the Congress dispensation, led by Mrs. Gandhi.

The great political divide in India The prelude to the “Emergency” was marked by a steady deterioration of Mrs. Gandhi's political stature. The country also witnessed the complete breakdown of political consensus between the government and the opposition. The seeds for the subsequently manifested political confrontation between the government and the opposition – leading to the Emergency – were possibly sown in 1969. That was the year of the great political divide in modern Indian political history. To continue as Prime Minister and establish her supremacy, Mrs. Gandhi divided the Congress Party. The constituent headed by the party’s traditional leadership, metaphorically speaking, was thrown to the scrap heap, while Mrs. Gandhi rode the crest of popularity, on the strength of her promises to rejuvenate the new Congress Party – known as Congress(R) - under her leadership, give it a “progressive” orientation, and work tenaciously for the uplift of the poor. In a mid-term parliamentary election in 1971, she pulled of a sensational victory for her party on the strength of the powerful slogan “Garibi Hatao” (Remove Poverty): it had overwhelmed the poor – constituting a greater proportion electorate then than now –

From the end of 1973 till June, 1975, JP led the opposition movement against Mrs. Gandhi’s government through demands to the Prime Minister to arrest corrupt practices infesting the polity, occasional meetings with her, cobbling together disparate opposition parties under a single banner of a “Janata” coalition to initially fight state elections and to form a singular political front against the Congress party, extending support for protest movement in the states of Gujarat and Bihar to secure the resignation of the Congress-led

here are two types of compassion. One is the compassion of the wise; one is that of the ignorant.

An ignorant person’s compassion is toward the fruit of an action - to alleviate the sickness or suffering that he witnesses. But a wise person’s compassion is toward the lack of knowledge - to remedy the underlying reason for sickness or suffering.

Compassion for suffering shows ignorance.

Suffering comes because of karma and if you believe in karma, where is compassion?

Often people think compassion is an act, an action. Know that compassion is your very nature. Then you will see that karma and compassion are not contradictory but rather complement one another.

What type of compassion should the doctor have toward each of them? This is a riddle

by Mrs. Gandhi in the first post-Emergency elections in March, 1977, and the hasty repeal of all draconian measures effected during the “Emergency”, by the victorious Janata government, was a valuable lesson for the entire political class of India to never compromise with the country’s cherished democratic paradigm, with its associated rights and responsibilities. The steadily increasing rumblings of public discontent as the “Emergency” wore on and the mounting urge Mrs. Gandhi began to feel towards the end of her authoritarian reign, are testaments to the compulsive pull of the attributes of democracy in India; it compels the country’s political rulers to seek the legitimacy of the people’s judgement, through democratic elections, after every interregnum of five years.

For the past forty years, after the end of the Emergency, Indian democracy has progressed through sundry vicissitudes, but never has any administration compromised its fundamental attributes as an excuse of restoring order amid chaos. The country’s democratic constitution provides ample opportunities for successive administrations to maintain requisite law and order through effective and accountable governance, thereby proliferating the country’s political stability, security, and economic prosperity. burns the seed of all negative karmas before they are given a chance to sprout.

NEW DELHI: Congress yesterday accused the government of imposing an "undeclared emergency" in the country after Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed Emergency as one of the "darkest period" in India's history on its 40th anniversary. Luxury in simpLicity Looking to buy some seriously beautiful artefacts for your home? Sara Shah tells you why The House of Things is the perfect website to log on to

W

hen I began to review the newly launched The House of Things website, I wasn’t all that kicked. The name sounded run-off-the-mill and there didn’t seem to be much appeal to it. So, I reluctantly logged on to see what it was about. And, it was not in the least bit as dull as I expected!

There isn’t much to the website’s design — they’ve kept things simple, which makes the website easy to navigate through. The home page gives you a sneak peak into the collections from various brands, including Sarita Handa, Airdiem, Moser, Micheal Aram and Jay Strongwater, that easily shows you the great options you can choose from.

I was quite excited by now, so I decided to check out their products section.

Scrolling past the artefacts was like witnessing a whirlwind of colours. On your left are categories that include Furniture, Games, Home Accents and Objet D’Art. I particularly loved their Agate Coasters by JewelCraftz (`12,000) and their Bird Bath Sculpture by Taamaa (`6,340). But — and this is the best part — I don’t recall seeing a single item that I didn’t like. Their beautifully sculpted ceramics and gorgeous blue pottery

have tried a fair amount of shaving creams — from everyday, affordable brands to luxury offerings— and to be honest, I am not really finicky about the type of shaving cream that I use. As long as it gets the job done, I couldn’t care less about the brand name, the packaging or its legacy. However, Truefitt & Hill really won me over. I tried the lavender and sandalwood creams, and both left me quite impressed. The foam was good enough for a smooth, close shave, but not so smooth that your face looks like it’s covered with cotton candy. The shaving cream lathers quickly and the resulting shave is quick as well as smooth, leaving behind a subtle fragrance.

artefacts made me want to click the ‘Buy’ option without a second thought. Sadly, everything was way over my budget! They even have a few stunning jewellery pieces on sale and their platter collection is fabulous!

What’s great about The House of Things is their tie-up with high-end brands, which offers up some of the most exquisite pieces you will ever see! I especially loved the collection by JewelCraftz, which includes coasters, platters and jewellery boxes, all made from gemstones such as crystal quartz and amethyst, which have been sourced from places such as Afghanistan and Australia. And, if you are a connoisseur of beautiful ceramic cutlery, the brand Nishita is perfect for you!

Putting my earlier scepticism to bed, my experience with The House of Things made

me realise that you’re unlikely to get bored of the website. They have an array of quirky bits and artefacts that, even if you aren’t there to buy, are a sheer delight just to look at. They also have beautifully crafted mirrors and piggy banks on sale!

My only problem with the website is its high prices. Everything is extremely expensive, particularly for those looking to invest in artefacts without burning a hole in their wallet. Prices start from `400 for one coaster and go all the way up to `8 lakhs for a vase, with prices of several products available only ‘on request’. But one could argue that, you can’t have quality without paying a heavy price for it. So, if you’re looking for some beautiful furnishings, and have the budget for it, The House of Things is definitely worth a visit.

FOLK CRAFT & ART Indian folk art is exciting, with its varied colours, shapes and unique textures. But does Baaya Design’s new website give you enough variety? Pooja Salvi logs on to find out

W

hen you log on to the Baaya Design website, you are greeted by a picture slideshow of their products and their retail store. It’s a pleasant surprise, since all I was expecting was a boring journey of Indian folk crafts with a few products thrown in. While they do cover the story of folk art in their About Baaya section, the rest of the tabs are quite interesting. The About Baaya section has six links that include information about its owner Shibani Jain, Baaya the brand and its projects, retail store, design methodology and social responsibility. The website is compact and restricted, but in a good way. Each link opens on the same page as a small pop-up and doesn’t require you to navigate to a different page.

As you scroll down, the website shares information about their interior projects in a beautiful picture collage.

Further down, Baaya Design brings you gifting solutions for different festivals and occasions. Clicking on this took me to an e-store that was not in the least bit cluttered. Their blog contains articles about Indian cultural folk crafts as well as information about the crafts from all over the world. The blog, written by Shibani, gives you an insight into her perception of

With a name that you may think says it all, Roti Kapda Makaan offers more than expected. Katha nauriyal visited the restaurant, which is tucked away in Raghuvanshi Mills, to try it out

hile there are several pizza chains in Mumbai, only a few give you exactly what you’re looking for in a pizza. Eagle Boys Pizza, which has its roots in Australia, is among the youngest brands in the country. They have a few USPs, one of which is that they make their dough twice a day to ensure that they serve fresh pizza bases.

Another major point is that nothing on their menu is fried — it’s all baked in a special oven with technology that is apparently derived from NASA. The outlet that I visited in Sion is really tiny; there’s just about enough seating for nine people, and they tell me that they mostly work on a delivery model, although their outlet in Worli is large, with ample seating options.

Sides Apart from pizzas, they also offer side dishes, a few of which are really tasty.

A great example of this is their Spicy Garlic Scroll (`89), which is extremely buttery and offers a good mouthful of garlic. And it’s spicy too, so if you like a hot garlic flavour, this will sit well with you. I also liked their Chicken Nuggets. Priced at `89, they were melt-in-the-mouth soft — unlike most other chicken nuggets that I’ve tried in the city. The Chicken Penne Pasta was alright, but the

Chicken Popcorn was average. But, I found the tomato sauce overpowering.

Pizzas I tried three of their vegetarian pizzas.

The Margherita is the most basic pizza that you can get and, at `89, it offers great value for money. The bread was soft and the edges crispy — just how a pizza crust should be. The Veg Mexicana (`199) had the subtle spicy hint of Mexican cuisine.

The Veg Supreme (`289) is top-of-theline from their vegetarian offerings and has pineapple, jalepenos, olives and capsicum. The pineapple makes for an interesting addition, but the pizza is overpriced for 7”.

Moving on to the non-vegetarian selection, their Bondi Chicken (`219)

captivated me, since I’ve watched a few episodes of a show that follows the lifeguards on Australia’s Bondi Beach. It’s a plain pizza, topped with chicken, pineapple, onion and capsicum. The chicken tasted like their nuggets, but was rather plain, unlike Bondi Beach, at least from what I’ve seen. Next was the Chicken Tandoori (`249), which I absolutely loved! With onion, capsicum, tomato and ground paprika, it was the perfect rendition of a taste that we all will naturally like.

I also tried the BBQ Chicken (`219) with extra BBQ Chicken (`39), to see what you can expect from the extra toppings. And for the price, it’s a satisfying helping of chicken. However, the pizza itself was average.

I capped my meal with Eagle Boys’ marquee pizza, the Sweetza, which is only available in one size and is priced at `99. It works as a great treat for children, but adults will enjoy it too. If you’re curious about the taste, think of a tasty chocolate doughnut with a good helping of chocolate sauce on top.

Crusts What would a pizza experience be without a choice of crust? And Eagle Boys Pizza has four options. The regular is its Deep Dish crust, which makes a nice fluffy base — something that I can recommend for every pizza. They also have a Thin and Crispy crust. While I don’t usually fancy crisp pizzas, for those who do, this is a great option. Then there’s the Cheesy Blast, which, for an additional `79, gives you a cheese-filled edge, so that your last morsel is like a bite of cheesy garlic bread. This is fairly decent and the string cheese used is a mix of Mozzarella and Cheddar. The Big Cheese, also for an additional `79, is the most difficult to eat, yet the tastiest of the lot.

There’s definitely reason enough to visit Eagle Boys Pizza, especially once you know what pizza and sides you like. And the prices are pretty reasonable as well.

s my colleague and I made our way to Roti Kapda Makaan, we were welcomed by a tagline that read ‘Yahaan har cheez bikau hai.’

And, just as it promises, everything there is up for grabs, including the T-shirts clipped on the window panes, the quirky sunglasses on the shelves, the grater lamps (it’s hard to miss those!), the funky tables that you sit at and even the crockery that you eat in! The store has a colourful ambiance and as we nestled into our seats, we were recommended the soup of the day, Tomato (`180) to start off with.

Served with crunchy focaccia bread, the soup is worth a try. Its tangy, spicy flavour lingers even after you’ve devoured it all.

Next up we tried the appetisers. We picked tasting portions of Baked Buns (`199) and Stuffed Cones (`199), which are otherwise served in four pieces each. The baked buns came in two flavours — vada pav and sundried tomato with corn, jalapeno and cheese. Both were served piping hot.

The vada pav filling doesn’t offer anything new, but is a must try.

The unusual stuffed >> The Lebanese Salad is a cones came in two must-try at the restaurant varieties as well — Pav bhaji and Cholle. While the cholle filling could be bland for some of us, I liked the subtle flavours!

After this we glanced at the menu to try the main course and picked a Lebanese Salad (`255) and Samosa Curry (`270). As we waited for our orders, we were informed that all main course dishes are offered in jars, which works as an easy pick and go option for customers. Served with pita bread, the Lebanese Salad had layers of cous cous, falafel and hummus.

Sadly, it tasted bland, with the pita bread being the only saving grace. The Samosa Curry was too pungent. But its concept was interesting — like an Indian Khao Suey, with a baked samosa dipped in coconut curry and served with condiments. Our meal was accompanied by Nespresso coffee, the only one served in the city. While my colleague picked cold coffee (`120), I opted a regular cappuccino (`150). As excited as we were, the coffees were pretty ordinary.

Finally, it was time for dessert. We ordered a Nutella and Banana Teacake (`100), Red Riding Hood (`160) and as recommended, Hand-churned Mango Ice cream (`70). The Nutella and Banana Teacake was warm and moist, perfect for a rainy evening. The Red Riding Hood (a Red Velvet cake served in a jar) is a treat for those who love the flavour as much as I do, but it could lead to a sugar rush. The latter, however, is like a homemade treat.

Roti Kapda Makaan is a really interesting place, with a unique theme. Everything palpable is on offer.

I recommend not only the quirky gifts and stationery on display, but the food too, barring a few dishes.

In a bid to escape the hordes of two wheelers and the urban chaos of Ho Chi Minh City, Raul Dias admits to falling prey to the charms of the bucolic life and lush topography of Vietnam’s picture-perfect, Mekong Delta

I

t was on Day 4 of my elaborately-planned, week-long south Vietnam itinerary, that Ho Chi Minh City — or ‘Saigon’ to use its old and (in my opinion!) more mellifluous sounding name — was starting to get on my nerves. My so-called honeymoon period with the city was ending before my very (weary!) eyes, with every rising plume of exhaust pipe smoke and with every shrill hoot of a pavement-riding two wheeler that almost ran me over for the nth time that day. Yes, as much as I first fell in love with the city’s immaculately manicured gardens and street food wonders like the sublime Banh Mi sandwich and Pho noodle soup, I was now in a whole other state of mind, where love was the furthermost emotion I was feeling! Something my hotel’s manager said would be remedied only after spending a couple of days immersed in the bucolic charms of the Mekong Delta, not very far away from my soon-turning bête noire — Ho Chi Minh City.

FACT FILE n Getting There: While there are no

direct flights from Mumbai to Ho Chi Minh City, the best way to get there is via Bangkok. There are numerous direct flights daily from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City on airlines such as Jet Airways, Thai Airways and Vietnam Airlines. From Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta is an 1.5 hours drive by bus or car with several tour companies offering such services. A visa permission letter for Vietnam can be obtained online and exchanged for a visa stamp at Ho Chi Minh City airport for USD 45.

GrEAT EsCApEs Armed with a backpack full of brochures and my trusty guidebook for company, I hopped on to a bus heading southwest. My destination? The idyllic town of My Tho. As the gateway to the Mekong Delta, My Tho is the capital of the Tien Giang province and so is, an important market town. But before I start waxing eloquent about the wonders of My Tho, a wee bit of a pagoda pit stop made by my bus driver in order to seek blessings, deserves a mention. The Vinh Trang

n When to Visit: Although the best time to visit Vietnam is from

October to March, the rainy season that lasts from June till September is a glorious time to be in the south of the country, especially in the Mekong Delta that wears a lush, verdant cover.

Pagoda in My Phong village, situated close to My Tho, was unlike any other pagoda I had seen so far. Structurally, a cross between a Hindu temple and a Buddhist shrine, this pagoda was built in 1849 and is said to feature a blend of Chinese, Vietnamese and Angkor (Cambodian) architectural styles. The pagoda consists of five buildings, two ornamental yards and 178 pillars. Inside the pagoda, I marveled at a set of pictures called Eight Angels Riding On Animals. Another set of statues of the Amitabha Holy Trinity is carved in bronze and is as big as a man, and more particularly, the set of the 18 Arhants. As the pagoda’s priests were about to head for lunch, I quickly made my way around the exquisitely decorated inner courtyard before paying obeisance to the huge and rather convivial-looking Laughing Buddha’s statue on the left side of the pagoda.

WATEr MAGIC! Hitting the water hyacinth-surrounded My Tho Dock a mere 10 minutes later, I savoured my first glance of the mighty Mekong River. Having been acquainted with the 7th longest river in Asia on my previous my trips to Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, its Vietnamese facet was oddly familiar, and equally striking! A virtual ecosystem seems to exist, nay, thrive along its placid waters with floating markets, homes, and even schools happily going about their business. A short jet boat

ride later and I found myself sniffing in the heady aroma of coconut being cooked at the coconut candy factory on Unicorn Island. Right from de-husking the coconut and, extracting its milk, to cooking it with palm sugar, cooling the resulting molten candy and finally wrapping it up in the strangely edible paper covering, the factory workers are pros, who manage to skillfully convince you to pick up a packet of the yummy, freshly made candy for a mere 20,000 Vietnamese Dong (around `64). But, I needed no convincing to help myself to a shot glass of the ultra-potent coconut liquor that was strong enough to fuel a rocket! After a short horse buggy ride around the tiny island, it was time for a simple lunch of Ban Tam Bi — rice noodles with roast pork covered in sweetish coconut cream (we were at a coconut candy factory, after all), accompanied by a durian and coconut ice-cream.

FLoATInG AWAy… Speaking of durian, the supremely stinky South East Asian fruit with a notorious reputation seemed to be the star product on sale at the Cai Rang Floating Market the next day. Having spent the night in Can Tho, the Mekong Delta’s largest provincial capital city located 6kms away, I set off the next morning to check out this floating commerce hub of for two reasons. First, I wanted to avoid the merciless mid-day May sun. And second, the market is best explored between 7 and 8am, as most vendors are eager to do an auspicious

first sale, similar to our desi concept of boani.

Passing by vibrantly-painted boats being anchored along the shore, merchant vessels carrying loads down the river and houses built on stilts over the water, the boat that I had hired for half a day came with its very own English-speaking skipper named Hei (pronounced: “Hi!”) who doubled up as my de facto guide du jour. While the floating market itself is quite an impressive site, it is the merchants that ply their wares on the waters who are the real stars. From the chatty woman selling durians to the shy soft drink vendor who gently attaches her boat to yours with hooks, as she persuades you to try her super-strong Ca Phe Sua Da (iced Vietnamese coffee with sweetened condensed milk), the Cai Rang Floating Market is filled with distinctive characters.

noodLEs And pApEr? After a languid 10-minute ride from the market, my final stop before heading back to Life in a Metro was to the rice paper and vermicelli noodle factory on Phoenix Island. Here, large mounds of soaked glutinous rice are processed into a slurry, which is then spread over cloth-covered circular pans and cooked till a translucent skin is created. Once the skin is cooked a little, it’s spread over bamboo mats to let it dry in the sun. For rice paper — that is used in the sublime Vietnamese spring rolls called Gỏi Cuốn in the south and Nem Ran in the north —the rice skin is dried only for a short while. But, for turning into vermicelli noodles, they are dried till they are rough and leathery. After this, they are fed though a shredder (much like an office paper shredder) and they come out as shiny fine noodle strands that are enjoyed in dishes such as Bun Bo Xao (lemon grass beef and noodle salad) and Bún Thịt Nướng (grilled pork over vermicelli noodles). Making a mental note to try out the aforementioned goodies back in Ho Chi Minh City that night, I bid adieu to the Mekong Delta — a languorous and fascinating waterworld that made me shout “What a World!”

show ‘Krishna Kanhaiya’, the 15 feet tall sculpture of Krishna epitomizes the bliss of his cosmic and celestial existence thereby making it the biggest butter Krishna in the world.

Over 300 hours of hard work by several special artisans has been put in the structure. The artistes worked for over three weeks and underwent 75 hours of training and working in 10 - 15 degrees temperatures.

Weighing approximately 800kgs, the structure was exhibited at Infiniti Mall, Andheri in Mumbai last week.

Post the promotion; the butter was effectively utilized as it would be distributed to major temples in the city for their daily use.

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose marginally on Thursday (June 25, 2015) a net 37.15 points (0.44%) and closed at the 8398 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 8336 points level. It then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 8329 points level at 9.16 a.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until 12.00 p.m. It then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 8423 points level at 2.42 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 94 points. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 31 were gainers, 18 were losers and 1 remained unchanged. Substantial buying was witnessed in capital goods and realty stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 30.39%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.

Rajan Says Economy In Better Shape, But Flags Volatility

RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan has said macroeconomic fundamentals of the country have improved over the past two years and emerging market economies like India are better placed to face any eventuality. In the same breath, he cautioned against more volatility, given conflicting action by the developed world. After the "taper tantrums" starting mid-May 2013, when the Fed hinted at reversing its easy money policy, "a combination of global factors and concerted domestic policy decisions" have helped the country, Rajan said in the foreword to the Financial Stability Report 2015 (FSR) released by RBI yesterday."The macro-economic fundamentals have improved and we have also been able to build buffers to fight any future uncertainty," he said, stressing that "we need to be vigilant" he said, adding "With back-to-back quantitative easing by other major central banks, alongside the possible tightening by the Fed, what we have seen might be only one of a series of such 'tantrums' that the global markets are likely to witness."

India Ranks Number One In Embracing Automation

India has been ranked number one in terms of embracing automation as 83 per cent of companies are either already automating business practices or may do so over the next 12 months, says a survey. According to assurance, tax and advisory firm Grant Thornton's International Business Report, companies are switching to automation for lower costs, greater accuracy and increased flexibility to increase or decrease production. India was ranked number one in embracing automation in operations and practices, followed by Mexico and Ireland in the second and third place, respectively."Given the population size and the underlying economy growth drivers for India, automation and digitisation would probably be one of the key drivers to future growth," Grant Thornton India Partner Raja Lahiri said.

IT, ITES Cos To Recruit 2.3 Lakh This Fiscal

Fresh recruitments by the Indian IT and ITES companies will be in the range of 2.3 lakh during the current financial year, a top functionary of Nasscom said yesterday. BVR Mohan Reddy, chairman of IT and ITES industry body Nasscom, also said that the reported visa related probe on TCS and Infosys by the US government is not "unusual". "There will be intake in this financial year. Last year the fresh intake was 2.3 lakhs engineers what we recruited. We anticipate the number would be roughly in the same range. We also see at this point of time productivity and efficiency increase and more amount of automation took place. The current forecast is approximately the same as an intake from freshers," Reddy said at a press conference.

The Central Depository Services [CDSL] has announced the launch of National Academic Depository [NAD] facility for University of Mumbai [UoM]. The facility was launched by Rajan Welukar, Vice Chancellor, UoM last at Kalina in the presence of Dinesh Bhonde, Controller of Examinations, UoM and senior officials of UoM, CDSL and Infosys.

Currently, the convocation certificates of UoM for the year 2014 are hosted on NAD and the same of previous years will be hosted on NAD, shortly.

etirement fund body EPFO will start investing in stock markets from next month as part of its plan to put in as much as Rs 5,000 crore in exchange traded funds (ETFs) by the end of this fiscal. "We will start investing in the exchange trade funds from next month. We have planned to invest 5% of our incremental deposits in ETFs during this fiscal," Employees' Provident Fund Organisation's Central Provident Fund Commissioner K K Jalan told PTI. "EPFO is expected to get about Rs 1 lakh crore as incremental deposit during the current financial year.

The list covers public companies with annual revenue of USD 5 million to USD 1 billion, Forbes said, adding that they should also have positive net income and should be publicly traded for at least a year.

Companies from mainland China & Hong Kong (84) as well as Taiwan (36) dominated this year's list accounting for 60 per cent of the top 200 publicly-traded companies in the Asia Pacific region.

With 11 companies, India was ranked fourth on the list after South Korea which has 17 firms in the coveted list.

The Indian companies that made it to the list include Byke Hospitality, Caplin Point Laboratories, Centum Electronics, Kaveri Seed, Kitex Garments, NGL FineChem, Orbit Exports, Premco Global and Vakrangee, reports PTI. Of the 200 companies, 123 are new to the list, which underscores the "dynamism of the region's small and medium-sized sector", Forbes said. India and Malaysia both have 11 companies on the list while Australia has nine firms. This year, Japan dropped out of the top five countries, with only eight companies compared to 15 last year.

rime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday launched three mega urban schemes viz., Smart Cities Mission, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and Housing for All in urban areas setting in motion the process of urban transformation to enable better living standards and drive economic growth. Stressing on the need for people-centric urban planning and development, he said that for the first time in the county such an effort has been launched.

Defining a Smart City as one which is one or two steps ahead of the aspirations of the people, Modi said smart city aspirants are being selected through a process of competition and with effective citizen participation ending the ‘top down’ approach and leading to ‘people-centric’ urban development. He further said that the new schemes were formulated after extensive consultations with all the stakeholders, the biggest of its kind in the country so far. Modi noted that the management of urbanization in the country offered the biggest challenge and opportunity for the people and elected municipal leadership to contribute to transforming urban India.

Stating that public representatives are remembered for the good work they did during their tenures, the Prime Minister urged Mayors and Municipal Chairpersons attending the launch to contribute for the good of the people. ot many know that Sandeepa Dhar ?is an animal lover.

Recently during rains lots of street dogs have been hiding to save their lives and starve for hours.

Sandeepa found 5 such puppies at the basement of her building who were all drenched in rain and were shivering due to the cold.

Sandeepa being an animal lover, took all of them to her place, fed them and took care of them. Says Sandeepa: "I'm a pet lover, and when I saw those puppies shivering in my building basement I was heartbroken so I took them home. I think it is everyone responsibility to take care of animals especially in monsoon as you never know if those animals are being fed or no, if they are sick or hungry or just scared."Not many know but Sandeepa is

ndian-origin Hollywood actress Freida Pinto alongwith actor Chiwetel Ejiofor and filmmaker Richard Curtis today launched the world’s first global cinema ad campaign, aimed at raising awareness of the United Nations’ goals for sustainable development.

It is a part of the Global Goals campaign, “Project Everyone”, founded by Curtis.

ottingham: India's tennis hero Leander Paes has added yet another milestone to his terrific career, which is full of achievements, as the veteran pro has now played with 100 different partners on the ATP circuit.

When Paes took court with Marcel Granollers at the Aegon Open in Nottingham, yesterday, the Spaniard was his 100th partner. They reached the quarterfinals after eking out a 3-6 6-2 11-9 win over Treat Huey and Scott Lipsky.

Paes has been most successful with estranged partner Mahesh Bhuapthi with whom he won three of his eight men's doubles Grand Slam titles.

He won two each with Radek Stepanek and Lukas Dlouhy and one with Martin Damm, all of whom incidentally are from Czech Republic. Paes is the 47th player to reach a century of doubles partners. Of these 100 partners, 71 played with him on the Tour level while 29 at the Challenger level.

ottingham: Top seeds Leander Paes and Marcel Granollers were today knocked out the ATP Aegon Open following a quarterfinal defeat against unseeded Chris Guccione and Andre Sa, here.

Paes and Granollers, the 100th partner of the Indian, lost 4-6 6-3 7-10 to Australian-Brazilian team in one hour and 15 minutes in the Euro 644065 grass court event, the last in the build up to the Wimbledon.

IRPUR: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit out at his fast bowlers, saying that the time has come to decide on the future of the existing pace attack.

"This win is good, but we need to make a decision if we want quick bowlers or if we want good bowlers even if they are not quick. We have been backing too many quick bowlers who haven't been bowling well," said Dhoni after India posted a face saving win over Bangladesh in the third and final ODI here today.

Umesh Yadav, brought back into the side, leaked 33 runs in four overs.

Dhoni attributed the 77run win to the team's performance with the bat.

India scored 317 for six courtesy Dhoni's 69 and a fluent 75 from Shikhar Dhawan.

"What was important was to put runs on the board, which we did," said Dhoni.

"If we give our bowlers those extra 10-15 runs, the game is on. Partnerships were the key. At times on slow pitches, it looks like you are behind the target but it is important to keep the wickets in tact. We have resources in the last 10 overs to get a par-plus total."

Dhoni made his runs at number four, a position he would want to continue to bat on. "The last two years I have hardly batted at 4. If I have, I have only done so after the 30th-35th over.

ntwerp (Belgium): After two unconvincing wins, a misfiring India face their first real test when they take on arch-rivals Pakistan in a much-anticipated Pool A encounter of Hockey World League semi-finals, here today.

The showstopper encounter between Asian Games champions India and Champions Trophy silver medallists Pakistan has raised the stakes in the diamond city of Antwerp.

ANTIAGO: Hosts Chile sent nine-man Uruguay crashing out of the Copa America, winning a stormy quarter-final 1-0 to edge closer to their dream of a first South American crown.

An 81st-minute strike from Juventus defender Mauricio Isla settled a pulsating encounter at Santiago's Estadio Nacional as holders Uruguay saw striker Edinson Cavani and defender Jorge Fucile sent off.

Fucile's dismissal for a second yellow card in the closing minutes triggered a mass confrontation involving players and officials from both sides, with even Uruguay's veteran coach Oscar Tabarez coming onto the pitch.

Brazilian referee Sandro Meira Ricci had already incurred the wrath of Uruguay's players after his decision to show a second yellow card to Cavani in the 61st minute.

EW DELHI: The BRICS under-17 Football Cup will strengthen relations, promote a safe and protective environment along with corporate social responsibility (CSR), said Joao Gilberto Vaz, Project Leader and Tournament Organiser at an ASSOCHAM event here.

While addressing a meeting, Vaz said India has become an emerging football market with the recent creation of Indian Super League (ISL), adding it is a key player in all segments within
