or the first time in their lives, three generations of the Rodirgues family got to vote together at Virar as the member of the third generation, Montinha Rodrigues recently turned 18. Anthony Rodrigues always told his daughter Seema to vote for a better government, and Seema carried out the practice with her own daughter. Montinha said, “It has always been my wish to vote, but voting along with my mother and grandfather has made this experience more memorable. We discussed the election and decided who will be the best candidate to vote before we cast our votes. It was a great experience feeding off my grandfather's and mother's politicial party knowledge.”

Unique voters: Couple vote on their D-Day By Team ADC

Y

oungsters at the polling booths of Panvel decided to cast their vote accompanied by their partners. Couples were seen coming together, to cast their votes. Swara (19) and Hemant (21) said, “It feels great. We as a couple try and do important things of our lives together and voting is equally important for us. Most of our friends also went for voting with their partners. It's fun.” Balaram Patil Vidyalaya of Belapur constituency, Navi Mumbai witnessed a special moment when a newly married couple dropped in to exercise their right to vote. Anjana More (25), a CA, and Pradeep More (28), a software en-

gineer, voted fully dressed in their wedding attires. Anjana told the ADC, “When we came to know that polling is on our wedding day, we decided that we will definitely go and vote. Rituals can wait for a while, but we didn't want to wait for five years to do our part for the betterment of the city by choosing the right candidate.” Presiding officer of Balaram Patil Vidyalaya, Belapur, Shaikh Hamza told the ADC, “The turnout of the young generation is at the peak today at our polling booth. And we are getting similar reports from nearby booths as well. The college-going students, young private sector employees, housewives, all came to contribute to the future building of the city.”

Holiday for teachers today A

fter a big demand from the teachers to declare October 16 as a holiday, the state government finally relented, considering their huge workload. Teachers had to report for election duty at 5.30 am and remained there till midnight. But those teachers who were relieved from duty at 6 pm will have to report to their schools today. Those who remained on duty till 12 pm, presiding officers and returning officers have been allowed to take off. A teacher from Andheri said, “This is a good decision because it is impossible for us to report to work early on October 16. Finally we can rest for a day.”

using my ticket as a platform to reach out to people and create awareness about their rights and the political scenario. I have contested the Vidhan Sabha elections two times already and every time the number of votes are decreasing. But it doesn't matter because my aim is not to come to power by throwing money during campaigning and then earning money after getting the power. In my campaigns, I never ask for votes. I am happy creating awareness among people,” said 38-yearold Sandip.

After the vote, they all felt very satisfied and expressed their happiness by saying, “We are citizens of this city and are glad that our vote will help for the betterment of the state.”

‘We are sick, but will vote’ P rakash Parmar was wearing sunglasses inside the polling booth at Bhatwadi in Ghatkopar. But that was no style statement. It was because he was suffering from conjunctivitis. Standing next to him was his wife Lilavanti, whose eyes were red too. Despite severe discomfort, this couple came to exercise their votes on Wednesday. “We have been down with fever and have red eyes since the last three days. My head and jaw are aching but we had to vote and so we are here,” said Prakash.

When 10-yr-old Sadiq became police commissioner

While the crime scene across the country is getting uglier by the day and city police chiefs are largely being blamed for it, here is one young lad who took on the post, albeit in a different context. We came across this news report which said 10-year-old Sadiq, who has blood cancer, wanted to be police commissioner of his city, and his wish was granted on Wednesday through 'Make a Wish Foundation' – a voluntary

organisation that works for children with life-threatening diseases. Dressed in khadi uniform and a cap, he beamed with pride when police officers of Hyderabad saluted him, their 'chief' for the day. He also had a salute for the cameras, baton tucked under one arm. Sadiq, who is from Karimnagar, has many relatives in the police force. So it was no surprise when he expressed his wish to become a police commissioner."I want to maintain peace and catch rowdies," he told a crowd of reporters, dwarfed by his seat. Hyderabad police chief Mahendar Reddy sportingly gave up his office for the roleplay, saying he felt happy to fulfill little Sadiq's wish.

96 bananas forced out snatched chain

28-year-old Damu Gupta was riding a train from Mumbai to Gondia. During the lengthy trip, Gupta snatched a gold chain from a doctor who was also a passenger. The victim, identified as Dr. Sheetal Kamble, of Akola district, cried out for help, prompting several passengers to chase Gupta. The suspect was quickly cornered, but denied stealing the chain. But one of the passengers saw him swallowing something, prompting police to conduct a thorough search. Rather than wait for the 11-gram gold chain to naturally pass through Gupta's digestive system, the authorities reportedly fed him 96 bananas to help it along the biological tract. The following day, investigators recovered the chain from the suspect's fiber-laden feces. After the chain was recovered, Gupta said he swallowed it because he was afraid of getting beaten up by the other passengers. But no one bothered to find out how Gupta felt after eating all those bananas in 24 hours.

Many people in the Kurla (West) did not approach the representatives to get their voters slip in advance and went directly to the polling booths yesterday. When the representatives asked the people to get the voting slip, they refused and had an argument with the representatives. Muneeb Kadri (25) said, “Why does one need a voter slip? Everything is available in the voter ID card and the representatives are lazy to find out the name, I will not get a voter slip, I have got my voter ID card and the people can find out my name from it.”

Fight at Malvani After a polling officer asked an election agent to move out of the polling booth, Aslam Shaikh, a contestant from Malvani, intervened and asked for a clarification from the election officer at Malvani plot no 6. Vedika cast her vote in the Airoli constituency. She said, “At the time of Lok Sabha elections, I was abroad, so I couldn't vote. But this time I made sure that I vote. I feel much more responsible today.” The proud grandfather said, “It's good to see that today's generation believes in the power of democracy.” The youngsters were excited about the idea of voting. However, to manage youngsters who were clicking selfies and pictures was a challenge for the authorities. Kids were carrying smart phones with them and were all set to click their parents voting. But clicking pictures was strictly prohibited. In an interesting incident, Varun Bhosle (7), who was simply accompanying his parents to the polling booth, was unable to understand why he was not allowed to click pictures of his own father. hile Mumbaikars were overall happy with the arrangements made at polling stations, the booths that were housed on the first floor gave the physically disabled a very hard time. Many polling booths were on the first floor in buildings which had no lift. This made the process not only painful but very impractical and dissuaded many from casting their vote. Many polling stations like the Dunne's Institute at Admiral House, Colaba among many others had booths on the first floor making it extremely difficult for the physically handicapped voters and their families to vote. nant Bhagoji Ambokar (45) who has severe physical deformities came to the polling booth at Vikhroli in the arms of his nephew and his neighbour. Anant who runs a small shop and has a wife and two daughters, who are also handicapped like him, was happy to be able to cast his vote despite his handicap. “This is the time for us to do our bit for our country. “Vote toh karna zaroori hai (It is important to vote). This is our way of hoping to get good governance,” said Anant. For 43-year-old Heena Mehta from Bhandup physical handicap was not a deterrent for voting and with a family as supportive

as hers, voting with handicap was a smooth run for her. “Heena's eyesight and hearing abilities have been diminishing since childhood. That has affected her walking as well. “Also, she cant take this heat. And recently, we lost our father as well so she is emotionally disturbed. This is the first time I am getting her to the polling booth. It was our father who used to accompany her. But despite all this, she wanted to vote and I was willing to support her,” said Heena's brother Rajesh Mehta. Heena who was excited about being able to vote said, “It is important to vote,” in a slurred but happy voice.

he BMC had a special squad making rounds yesterday to ensure offices, malls and shops were duly shut, so that employees and potential customers would be free to vote. The squad found 280 firms which continued to work, preventing their employees from voting, and penalised them. “Out team of 46 inspectors visited 2,706 firms. They were divided into four squads, classified as South, Central, Western and Eastern, each squad comprising 12 inspectors, headed by one senior inspector. They were on duty from 7 am to 6 pm,” said the chief inspector of shops and establishments on election duty, Arvind D Gosavi. “We received 82 complaints in

headquarters, a majority from the South and Western suburbs. Some of the companies on which cases have been filed are – Tata Consultancy in Goregaon, Ramanlal Vithaldas & Company at MIDC Andheri, Citibank Logistics Company in Goregoan, West End Hotel in Fort and many other companies.” Gosavi said the squad at Citibank faced problems with the staff for not co-operating with them. “Extra force was required as they were not ready to give us written information regarding their staff and voting details.” Going by the procedure to file a complaint against malls, shops and offices, first a court case against the shop or office has to be filed.

Peaceful polling witnessed all over city P

olling was by and large peaceful today in 36 Assembly seats of the city, barring an incident of a clash between activists of two political parties and cases of recovery of cash allegedly meant for voters, police said. According to police, a stone was pelted allegedly by a suspected MNS worker at the car of mafia don Arun Gawli's daughter and Byculla constituency candidate Geeta, that led to damage to the vehicle's rear window near a polling booth. Tension erupted when Geeta's Akhil Bharatiya Sena

activists objected to MNS workers sporting the latter party's caps at Byculla. Geeta was also present at the time of heated arguments among the workers and her rear window was broken. However, she was not inside the vehicle when the stone was hurled at the car, police said. "We are enquiring into the matter. Except this minor clash, polling in the city was peaceful," said Dhananjay Kulkarni, deputy police commissioner (Spokesperson). In another case, a Congress worker, Niloba Sarode was found to be distributing

cash to voters in suburban Chembur following which a Non Cognisable (NC) Offence was registered against him and Rs 31,500 confiscated, police said. In two separate cases, Rs 25.66 lakh in cash has been seized from three persons and NCs were registered, police said. Park site police have in the wee hours of yesterday found cash of Rs 1.66 lakh with two women in Vikhroli who claimed that it was offered to them by Congress candidate Sandesh Mhatre in Vikhroli Assembly constituency to take care of

food and other expenses of polling agents, police said. In another incident, cash of Rs 24 lakh was discovered in a car, driven by one Rajendra Bharadwaj, near Bombay Gymkhana in south Mumbai during random checking of vehicles on Monday night, said an officer from Azad Maidan police station. "The money has been confiscated and Bharadwaj has been handed over to Income Tax officials for further inquiry. The preliminary probe does not link the money with the ongoing elections," the official said.

he Bandra police has arrested two people for allegedly carrying voter IDs that are suspected to be fake. The police, based on a tip-off about a possible bogus voting strategy in Bandra, carried out a search operation in which 299 voter IDs along with laptops were seized by the police. The police, during nakabandhi spotted six people seated outside Rangsharda building near Lilavati Hospital in Bandra West at around 2 pm on Wednesday. A police officer said, "We questioned the group and while searching them, we found they were carrying 99 voter IDs and laptops. Four of them fled before the police could nab them. The remaining two, including a woman and a minor boy, have been caught and are being questioned. They were seated 200 metres away from a polling booth.

The police believe that they could be affiliated to a political party. "We are verifying the source of these voter IDs and whether they are bogus. We have called the Returning Officer of the area to verify. We are also examining their laptops and mobile phones, etc. We will be registering an FIR if required after preliminary investigations," said the officer. It is not the first time that Bandra Constituency came into light for bogus voting with fake voter ID cards; earlier too many bogus voters were detained by Bandra cops for allegedly entering into the poling booths with fake ID cards. On the basis of primary information, police have registered an FIR under section 456 and 420 against arrested woman and a minor boy, but they could not reveal their identity till the other accused are rrested.

orking on a tip-off, Palghar district authorities seized four electronic voting machines (EVMs) late on Tuesday night from the residence of a zonal officer, a state government employee who was deployed on election duty in Palghar. An independent candidate approached the district collector's office and informed that he learned that voting related electronic equipments were kept in the residence of a zonal officer. Thereafter the zonal officer's house was raided. According to Election Commission guidelines, taking any election related material out of the polling booth

is strictly prohibited. During the inquiry, the zonal officer said that he had no malafide intentions. These four EVMs were extra. He kept the machines at his residence for their safety, he said. District Collector Abhijit Bangar said, “Authorities were not happy with his justification. Guidelines are clear that one cannot take any article related to election out of polling booth or place designated by district collector's office and local police.” He added, “I was told that these EVMs were not in service, instead they were for emergency only. An FIR is registered in this case.”

undreds of people in Worli Assembly constituency complained that they were deprived of their right to vote as their names were deleted from the voters list. Several of them protested in front of the polling booth but were pushed away by the police. Several of them are local residents of the area and have been residing in the same locality since the last three

decades. They claimed that their names were on the list during the recent Lok Sabha election and they had voted too, but this time their names were missing. Local resident Shakuntala Pandurang Kashind (55) resident of Worli said, “I have been staying here from last 20 years and every time I have cast my vote. Even I had cast my vote during last Lok

Sabha election. Now my name is missing.” She added, “Since morning, they asked me to go from one polling booth to another and I took five rounds in the vicinity. I have no energy to even walk now.” Another resident, Sonali Kadam (25) said, “I had not made any application for change of address or to delete my name. Yet they have deleted it.”

Chandrakant Chaudhari said, “ In the morning, I went to my regular polling booth. They sent me to another booth. I went there and they asked me to check with another booth. But my name was missing though I have been voting since past three decades.” He smiled and said, “I will come again for the next election and make sure my name is there on the list.”

Ponder awhile... “What is seriousness? To find out, one must be aware that one's mind is turned outward or inward in order to fulfil itself — to gain or become something. HE heavy voter turn-out in Mumbai has made some poll pundits to conclude that the BJP will get the maximum number of seats. It is possible that the large number of migrants in the city — from several states — have voted for the BJP. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign in Maharashtra attracted huge crowds everywhere. This has given rise to speculation that Modi magic continues in Maharashtra. The Shiv Sena which also waged an aggressive poll campaign — criticising both Mr. Narendra Modi and the BJP — might have also fared well at least in the city. Opinion appears to be unanimous that the Congress will be defeated. This conclusion appears to be based on the utter failure of the Congress on the national scenario. The stigma of corruption is still sticking to the party. Maybe confessions on the pre-poll day made by Prithviraj Chavan may produce a sympathetic response. It is a fact that Mr. Chavan's hands were tied and he could do nothing to prevent the Congress' ally NCP from allegedly resorting to the irrigation scam. The minister involved got exonerated later but the taint of corruption stuck. No party will perhaps get the majority required for forming the government. The poll will likely produce a hung assembly.

OW that voting for the Maharashtra State Assembly is over, there would be an uncomfortable lull for the next three days, till the votes would be counted and the final verdict declared. The electorate of Maharashtra have voted to elect their new Assembly and more importantly their new government. Though the actual campaign lasted only for two weeks; it started and ended in a chaotic note and did not touch any basic issue that touches and affects the lives of the 110 million people of Maharashtra, surely those who voted have a bunch of expectations from the new House and the government. From various opinion poll surveys published and broadcast before the voting, it seems that Maharashtra is heading for a change of guard after 15 long years and if the opinion polls are any indication, the new government would be led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While writing this column, the verdict of the exit polls is still awaited. By the time, readers read this article, the exit poll results would have been declared, thus, readers would have a better idea of where the state is heading. For many people and particularly for those who work in the political life, election is an ‘event’. The event that makes or breaks the governments and also makes or ruins career of many politicians. Therefore, the entire political fraternity slogs day and night to ensure a grand success in this ‘event’. When an event comes to end, it's also the end of the show. Thus, the political community withdraws, takes rest for a while and then starts preparing for the next 'event'. Many professional actors on stage, forget the dialogues immediately after the show is over; singers forget the beautiful lines of lyrics, that they sang and gained popularity. Even in the political field, the workers, volunteers and more often the leaders manage to forget the assurances, promises they had showered when they woo voters for votes. Surprisingly though, even voters take the voting as an 'event' and tend to forget what they had demanded and what they were promised immediately after the voting. They resume their daily routine and politicians embark on their journey ahead. The basic principles of Democracy, where people's continuous participation in the working of the government is envisaged. For me, voting is not an 'event' but a ‘process’. That begins with voting and continues relentlessly till the next bout of voting. If one has to take the principle of democracy, 'By the people, of the people and for the people', in the right spirit of the term, it is necessary to ensure that people at large do take active interest in the decision making process of the government and it's execution by the administration.

Issues, people want to discuss

Now, whichever party or group of parties take over the seats of power after counting of votes on Monday, the new government is expected to take up some issues on an urgent basis and some on long-term planning. This is because these were the issues that the people of the state wanted to discuss during the campaign, but did not get the opportunity to raise them as the campaign remained engaged in resolving petty political issues amidst politicians and their intra-person relations. The sky-rocketing rise of prices of essential commodities like foodgrains, kerosene, petrol and diesel for cars, sugar and pulses are pinching the entire community of the state and there does not seem to be any respite despite periodical assurances from the political fraternity. The new government will have to intervene immediately and check the growing prices of essential commodities in the retail market. It is possible. The last non-Congress government, that the people experienced, had been able to keep the prices

THINKING ALOUD Bharatkumar Raut of five most important essential commodities — foodgrains, sugar, pulses, milk and kerosene — under control. The government had displayed a board indicating the prices in the retail market and the rates were adhered to. The new government needs to take similar action. To achieve this on a long-term basis, the supply chain from producers to the last consumers would have to be strengthened and flawless. The prices remain under control if the number of middlemen is reduced. This would be possible only if agricultural producers are given direct access to the end consumers. Will the new government take this challenge? There are many more issues. The growing unemployment of educated youth has given boost to the Naxalite movement in the remote areas of the state. Young people decide to leave their homes to join unlawful militant activists because despite education they fail

Kind of seeds that lie deep in our consciousness T

HERE is a seed of anger in every one of us. In Buddhist psychology, this bit of consciousness is in terms of seeds, like a seed of corn. There are many kinds of seeds that lie deep in our consciousness, a seed of anger, a seed of violence, a seed of fear, a seed of jealousy, a seed of full despair, a seed of miscommunication, a seed of hate. They're all there and, when they sleep, we are okay. But if someone comes and water these seeds, they will manifest into energy and they will make us suffer. We also have wholesome seeds in us, namely the seeds of understanding, of awakening, of compassion, of nonviolence, of nondiscrimination, a seed of joy and forgiveness. They are also there. If you don't practice, if you do not live in a good environment, then these wholesome seeds will have no chance to be watered. That is why it is very important to select a right environment where the wholesome seeds in us could be watered every day, a kind of environment where the negative seeds will not be

to get meaningful employment or enterprise. Responsibilities of families force them to do anything, even risk their lives. Educated youth do not get employment in rural or semi-rural areas, close to their homes, because there are no factories, manufacturing units or service industries where their skills and education can be utilized. On the other hand, in handful of cities, where the industry is concentrated, the owners do not get skilled manpower for reasonable remunerations. Thus, they are forced to hire the skilled and semi-skilled labourers from outside the state. Their influx in the cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Aurangabad etc. puts extra burden on the civic amenities of already overburdened city life. This situation needs to be repaired on urgent basis. But it would also require long-term planning with the help of the central government. Creation of small and medium scale industrial units at district levels, to start food and fruit processing industry at village levels, involving women workforce in dairy and dairy-product industry, establishment of small hospitals and dispensaries in villages, opening of technical education high schools at the taluka level could be some form of a remedy.

watered every day. I will draw a circle representing our consciousness. Then I will divide the circle into two parts. In the lower part of our consciousness is called a store consciousness. Why store consciousness? Because in that part of the consciousness, all the seeds are stored and maintained and kept in it. Nothing can be lost. So you have a seed of anger, a seed of mistrust, a seed of violence, a seed of discrimination, a seed of despair. But you also have a

Unabated farmers' suicides in Maharashtra, particularly in Vidarbha region, are a shame on humanity. Poor farmers choose to end their life, only because they cannot sustain the pressure and frustration of repaying the farm loans. The erstwhile Congress government declared loan waivers schemes on couple of occasions. However, there was no respite as the waiver schemes prepared, executed and monitored by white-collar babus in the Government could not provide longterm solution to the problems. This is not a political problem but needs political will to handle it. The new government would have to provide a human face to the solution to resolve the problem. There are many more issues which would require attention and involvement of the new government. The rapid urbanization of the state has led to more problems than solutions. While one cannot prevent the process of urbanization, we can surely find methods to handle it, to ensure that new cities are developed without losing their Indian character. We need to protect citizens from stress and threats of urban life. These are few of the challenges and expectations from the new government. To achieve these goals and to live up to our expectations, let's wish the new government best of luck, even before it is born! @BharatkumarRaut prevent the negative seeds in us to be watered by ourselves and by the environment. This is a very crucial practice. I don't think that our society can get out of this violent situation, a situation of despair, without this kind of practice, protecting ourselves with a good environment because we are exposed to the kind of negative watering every day. What we see, we hear, we eat, always waters the seed of violence, the seed of despair, the seed of hate in us and in our children. That is why it's very urgent to do something collectively in order to change the situation. Not only educators, but parents, legislators, artists, have to come together in order to discuss the strategy that can help bring the kind of safe environment to us and to our children where we shall be protected from the negative watering of the seeds in us. The practice of transformation and healing could not be effective without this practice of seeking or creating a sane environment. Forced traditions I BELIEVE the tradition of fasting for husbands has been forced on women for centuries. The idea has been superimposed to give unnecessary importance to men. Fasting is a way to exercise self-control and detox and in no way to increase the lifespan of husbands. If husbands lives can increase, what about the wives'? It makes little sense, particularly in the current century where we have financially independent women and so many women bosses to whom the men report to. I was appalled to see Sushma Swaraj, too, decked up like a bride, fasting and taking part in a karva chauth ceremony last year with music, dance and food all over. Hema Malini‘s says that she anyway fasts twice a week, but the only difference on karva chauth is that she breaks the fast on spotting the moon. Nicely downplayed. This is just my view. TAKE STRICT ACTION: The people think that Arun Jaitley and Modi must take much bolder action than just repelling the Pakistan attacks– all political and diplomatic relations must be severed till Pakistan proves its worth to have meaningful relations with India. THE continuous firing which killed Indian civilians at the Line of Control by the Pakistani Army proves that Pakistan is not interested in peace talks with India. Shivaji Park returned without casting their votes as they could not climb up to the first floor and there was no lift or ramp facility at the polling booth. One of the voters who returned without casting vote said, “It would be my last vote (he thought that he may not see the next election). I wish I could go up but I cannot due to physical restrictions. I will miss the democratic ink on my finger.” Dadar Vidyamandir polling booth was on the first floor. It had no lift or ramp to reach the polling booth. Besides, its stairs were very steep and too narrow to climb. Chandromal Damaji (86), who managed to climb up with assistance of his granddaughter and on-duty police constable, did cast his vote. He said, “Election Commission is testing our patience by forcing us to climb 20 steps to cast a vote.” Another voter, Leela Joshi (75) said, “My husband could not cast his vote as he is not physically fit to climb the stairs. He went back but I put all my energy to climb up.” She showed her marked finger with a smile. Dilip Warang said, “My relative Dr Umesh Vengaskar could not cast his vote as he is not physically fit to climb the stairs.” He added, “Dadar is a famous area for retired people. MUMBAI | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2014

With Diwali just around the corner, we’re sure that you’re preparing to light up your home. DIY lights and lanterns make the process much more fun — and you can involve everyone around you in the process, just like we did! The Woman’s World Team brings you the results so that you can get started on making your own twinkly lamps

DIXIE CUP LIGHTS You will need: 12 (or more) paper cups, thin patterned paper of your choice, 1 string of fairy lights, fabric glue and scissors. To make: These pretty lights are incredibly easy to make. All you have to do, is cut strips of patterned paper in the size of your paper cups and stick them on with fabric glue. Next, poke small (make sure they are not too large or the bulb will slide out) xshaped slits at the base of each cup and push a fairy light bulb into each one. Tape the tops to secure it if you wish to — we didn’t need to! Hang it on a wall in your house and watch the light from the cups form pretty, patterned shadows. The festive patterns from the paper will lend an ethnic glow to your room.

CUPCAKE CASE LAMP You will need: Cupcake cases (the number will depend on the size of your lamp; we used 24), 1 paper lantern, fabric glue and scissors and 1 bulb (see box to make the contraption). To make: Assemble the lantern, making sure that it’s straight and well-centered. Make small cuts in each cupcake case so that they resemble open flowers. Stick the base of each case to the lamp, opening them up so that there are no visible gaps, as seen in the picture. String the bulb in carefully (make sure it’s switched off!) and watch it light up your room.

FABRIC FLOWER LAMP You will need: Fabric flowers (the amount will depend on the size of your lamp; we used 30), 1 paper lantern, fabric glue, scissors and 1 bulb (see box for contraption). To make: Get your children to make this lamp in their spare time. Assemble the paper lantern, then stick fabric flowers on to it. These take time to dry, so move slowly. We left a few white spots in between for a more homemade feel, but if you’d like to cover them up, get a coloured lantern and lighter coloured flowers. Push the bulb through it and you’re all done!

HAT LIGHTS You will need: 2 fabric hats (any colour, we chose black), 1 bulb (see box for contraption) and scissors. To make: This is one of our favourite lights, because it looks extremely classy and is ridiculously simple to make. Simply cut a hole through the top of each hat (a small x-shaped slit is best) and slip the bulb in, wire first so as to not open up the hole too much. You can hang several of these all over your home, place two together or hang a single one in the centre of your room.

THE BuLB CONTRAPTION

To get the bulb set up, you’ll need to get a bulb holder, a onemeter long electric wire and a two-pin plug point. The material is available at all electric stores and they will even set it up for you. For the scrappy ribbon chandelier lamp, you will need to make a contraption to hold the bulb in place. Get a thick aluminium wire (or taar — as the hardware store will call it), place the bulb holder in (approximately) the centre of the wire and wrap the wire around it tightly. Wrap it around two-three times and you’ll create a holder that can suspend the bulb mid-air. Use the two ends of the wire to hang the contraption to the lamp. If you do it right, you’ll be able to take the bulb holder out and slip it back in, as and when you please.

SCRAPPY RIBBON CHANDELIER EGG SHELL LIGHTS You will need: 2 egg cartons, 1 string of (yellow) fairy lights, loose glitter, acrylic paint (in two colours of your choice) and scissors. To make: If your children are making these, they may need help, because they’re more complicated than the rest. To make the flower shape, cut out each cup from the egg tray (the portion where your eggs are placed) and make little cuts to create flower petals. If you can’t manage this, you can keep them as they are and they will still look great. Paint each one (inside and out) in your favourite colours. We chose pink and yellow for a festive touch. Add a little loose glitter to the insides (this is optional and can get messy) and then make tiny holes at the base. We found that it’s easiest to poke tiny holes with a push pin and then slip the fairy light bulb in. Curl them up in a glass bowl or on a table (as seen in the picture) for the best effect. They also look great hanging lengthwise on a door frame.

Our craft supplies Something Special: Hill Road, Bandra (w), Cheap Jack: Hill Road, Bandra (w), Mahavir Electricals: Pali Naka, Bandra (w) (for the light), Nature’s Basket outlets

You will need: An embroidery hoop, 1 bulb (see box for contraption) and strips of ribbon in colours and sizes of your choice. To make: This is a great DIY lamp that your children can make. The best part is that they will require no supervision. All you need to do is take strips of ribbon and tie them on the embroidery hoop until it’s completely covered. The scrappier it is, the more rustic it will look. Slip a bulb through it (see box to find out how) and hang it outdoors for the best effect.

RITUALISTIC FOOD If you are a vegetarian and are interested in traditional cuisine, Sunita Rajwade’s book — The Fragrance of Mango Blossoms, is going to interest you. Yamini Walia speaks to Sunita about her book and her love for cooking

T

he Fragrance of Mango Blossoms, is a new book that features a compilation of recipes, rituals and traditions of the Kokanastha Brahmin community, to which Sunita Rajwade, the author, belongs. Sunita is a homemaker and a freelance writer in mainstream, print media. Her life-long passion for food was the reason she decided to delve into writing this book. Read on as she tells us more about her book, the inspi ration behind writing it and a little bit about what you can expect from the book.

>> Sunita Rajwade is a homemaker and a freelance writer, and The Fragrance of Mango Blossoms is her first cookbook

n How did you come up with the idea of

writing The Fragrance of Mango Blossoms? n Over the years, I have maintained a five-subject book, where, I have noted down recipes that my family enjoys. One day, I found both my daughters debating over which one of them would inherit the book. I didn’t take it too seriously at that time, b ut later, I realised that there is a whole set of traditions that are waiting to be passed on from me to my daughters in the form of my recipes. All of us celebrate festivals with certain foods and I realised that in our modern lives, we have begun to incorporate dishes from different cuisines, including idlis, dosas, dhoklas and food from Mughlai cuisine in our daily diet. There are very few families that o nly cook only their traditional food or live the way that their ancestors did. When I started explaining certain customs and rituals to my children, I thought that it would be easier if I wrote them down, particularly for my daughter who was living abroad and would often ask me simple questions such as how to make everyday food, or how a certain festival was traditionally celebrated. n Tell us about your book. What should

our readers look forward to when they read it? n My book is a collection of food recipes that are associated with rituals followed by the Kokanastha Brahmin community. In today’s day and age, with most people (especially urban Indians), following a cosmopolitan lifestyle, very few people are aware of the traditions followed by my community. I have also tried to briefly explain the significance of different festivals that take place throughout the year and the foods that they are celebrated with. Our food is entirely vegetarian without the use of garlic and ginger. Readers, particularly vegetarians, will be pleased to discover an entirely new cuisine — one that isn’t very popular. n What would you say is the USP of

your book? n With vegetarianism gaining popularity,

there is a growing demand for vegetarian recipes. Featuring a large number of recipes, my book is a great aid for a novice cook who wants to eat

The Fragrance oF Flowers The Fragrance of Mango Blossoms, by Sunita Rajwade, is a compilation of traditional, vegetarian recipes, made without garlic and ginger. With this book, Sunita has tried to explain the significance of various festivals celebrated in her community and the foods that are prepared on these days. You can learn how to cook dishes such as Varan Bhaat, Methkoot Bhaat, Ambaadichi Bhaaji, Watanyachi Usal, Ambyachi Dal, Paalakchi Dal, Bharli Vaangi, Karlyache Chaktya, and Aambyachi Aamti. basic vegetables, cooked in several different ways. n Apart from writing, what else do you

enjoy doing? n I enjoy travelling, watching movies,

photography and yoga. n You’ve donned various hats — of a

homemaker, a French language translator, a Mumbai city tour guide and a freelance writer. What role do you enjoy the most? n I think I am happiest writing, especially on the internet. I contribute to five blogs regularly. n What are your future plans? Do you

plan to write more books? n Yes, I intend on writing more books.

My second one will be a cookbook which will have my family favourites and will not be restricted to any particular cuisine. And, of course, like all writers, I hope to write the great Indian novel.

The makeup is too goth for such a delicate colour and the asymmetrical hemline makes her look a little dowdy. The gold work on Sophie’s outfit looks great and we love her low, side knot, but the necklace, clutch and overdone lips make her look more attention-seeking than elegant.

avon gel nail Paint Gel manicures are all the rage and while most gel polishes disappoint, there’s just something about the range from Avon. With UV light benefits, pop colours and brilliantly shiny finish, these quickly became my favourite nail polishes, leaving my nails looking like I’d just gotten a manicure, with barely half the effort and price. Here’s how each shade matched up: Purpilicious: This is a deep, brinjal shade that slides onto your nails. You need only one coat, and it lasts for weeks on end. inked up: This was a little too dark, but it’s still a gorgeous shade. My only grouse with it was that it seems duller than the other shades on this list and doesn’t have as much of a gel manicure finish. lavender sky: This is a soft, lavender shade that I fell head over heels for. The shiny, gel effect lasts for up to two weeks (I was surprised too!) and the colour glides on with a single coat, without being thick and gloopy. Parfait Pink: While this is a little too candy pink for my taste, the bright colour is as long-lasting as the lavender shade and the nail polish is just as easy to apply. It requires two coats to look as good as it does in the bottle though. roses are red: I was most excited, but also most disappointed with this one. It’s a shade that chips a little too easily so there’s no point to the shiny red coat. Apply three coats for it to really sit well. where Available through Avon Representatives, or call 011-33772866 Price `249 rating ****

Let my boss handle it. b. Apologise and find out how they want the work to be finished. c. Eh! Clients always complain! There’s no need to get worked up about it. How do you go about asking for a raise? a. Get together with a few co-workers

and demand a hike together. b. By asking for it? Duh! c. Do you mean that I can ask for a hike and they’ll give me one?! The office washroom is always out of tissue paper. What do you do? a. What can I do? I carry my own. b. Speak to the office caretaker and/ or the HR. c. Why should I do anything. Someone else will take care of it! Mostly As You need to learn how to manage pressure better, because as we see it (and mostly likely, how your boss does as well), you can’t handle problems on your own. You tend to take on a timid avatar when things go wrong, whether intentionally or subconsciously. It may also be because you’re new at your job and don’t know how to react or because you get stressed when you’re faced with a problem. Whatever the reason is, you need to come out of your shell and learn how to face consequences and manage problems effectively. Mostly Bs As far as handling mishaps is concerned, you are the go-to employee. You work well, even under pressure and don’t lose your sense of reason. If something goes wrong, you will stay calm and try to find a solution as soon as possible. And, it’s not just us — the fact that your boss turns to you when he/ she needs something done is proof of the fact that you take initiative and are a problem-solver. Mostly Cs Wake up! Based on your answers, it seems like you’re oblivious to what’s happening at work. You can be sitting at your desk and still not realise when something goes wrong — that’s how tuned out you are. We can’t judge how you would react to a problem, because you wouldn’t know that there was a problem in the first place. If you want to excel at your job, you need to start paying more attention to what is happening around you.

>> If you’re always oblivious and disinterested at work, you won’t be able to solve problems efficiently

deAling With A BAd joB experienCe I recently joined a new company, which was a dream come true for me. However, I didn’t ask for the job description before I started working there. Now, I am posted at the senior managerial level and I am being asked to work on banal files and do all sorts of clerical work. I am really disappointed because this is not what I signed up for. Also, my boss refuses to explain the work that I am assigned to do. I am required to learn everything on my own, without any proper training, and work within really short deadlines! I am fed up and this is reflecting in my work. What should I do? Please help. — Mohina Bhatnagar, dadar (w) dear Mohina, Well, it seems as though you’ve landed yourself in a bit of a mess. Your dream job seems to be turning into a

nightmare. Before it starts giving you sleepless nights, we recommend that you communicate your problems to your boss and if your boss refuses to listen, speak to someone else at the senior management level. If this fails to work and your job continues to frustrate you, your only option is to quit. After all, job satisfaction should be a priority and if you are not happy at your workplace, your work is bound to suffer. Believe in yourself and look for a better opportunity. However, next time around, ask for the job description before joining the company.

>> Customise your car so that it looks as stylish as you do

Style

your ride

Whether it’s because the interiors of your car are falling to pieces or because you’re tired of sitting in the same old seat for hours every day, change is in order. Yamini Walia & Sara Shah tell you how to spruce up the interiors of your car

S

tyling the interiors of your car may seem unnecessary, but it will boost your confidence and help make the long hours you spend stuck in traffic a little interesting. We’re sure you know how to keep your car clean, but what’s the harm having a little fun and making your interiors look just as stylish as you do? A simple change in seat covers or a few fancy cushions can help make your car an extension of your personality. Take a look at a few ideas that we love.

change the covers Opt for a simple, beige leather cover for a classy and elegant look, or bright colours such as red or pink for a fun look. You can also experiment with various prints such as animal prints or Hawaiian floral prints, to give your car’s interiors an edgy look. Saurab Shirke, owner of Toolhead Customs, tells us, “Pastel pinks and blues add a touch of femininity to your interiors without looking too garish or childish. Remember to choose wisely, because you’re going to use the set of covers for years to come.”

floor mats After seat covers, floor mats are the next best thing to change if you want to add some pizzazz to your car’s interiors. You can buy plush, comfy floor mats, or match them to your seat covers for an even more consistent, chic look.

cushion overload Stiff, upright car seats can make your back ache, especially during long journeys. For added comfort, throw in small cushions (larger ones will use up too much space) to make things more cosy and interesting. If your seat covers are in plain, solid colours, opt for cushions in contrasting colours or prints.

headrest covers Try covering your headrests with pretty, custom-made covers. They can be plain, patterned or can even have graphics or funny quotes on them.

steering wheel covers Experiment with steering wheel covers, which are often available in a range of prints, patterns and colours. Plain, hard steering wheels can often leave you with sore hands, so when you’re selecting a cover for your steering wheel, ensure that they are comfortable, and provide a proper grip.

gear shift covers Get a customised cover for your gear shift for some added flair. Gear shift covers are available in a variety of colours. You can even buy covers with embellishments or patterns on them. Try making one on your own for a more personal touch.

rear view mirror decorations You can use just about anything to decorate your rear view mirror. Necklaces, mementos or souvenirs — the possibilities are endless. Hanging scented products that also serve as air fresheners, is another good idea. Just ensure that they are not too big or they might be a distraction when you’re driving.

light it up You can change the colour of the dome lights in your car or take it up a notch by installing neon lights below the seats and the rear window. Blue or yellow lights give an all-black interior a luxurious and classy vibe. However, don’t go overboard as it might make your car look garish.

freshen it up There are so many air fresheners in the market that you might have a little trouble finding the right one. Look for a scent that appeals to you and remember that they don’t just have to be tiny little bottles latched on to your air conditioner vents. Air fresheners are available in various shapes, sizes and fragrances. They are also available in cans and in the form of cute, rear view mirror decorations.

Festive overkill

Almost...

Festive season means makeovers and a new wardrobe to ensure that you look your best. While your partner will appreciate the effort, it may get a little too much. Dev Goswami gives you an insight into the opposite gender’s mind and tells you why you may need to tone down some of your festive habits

B

efore we get started, let’s get one thing straight — men aren’t hypocrites. The humid weather, long hours spent commuting and pollution make it hard to look your best. So, even though all we may have to do is pop on a fresh shirt and slip into a blazer, we appreciate how well turned out our women are. We love your enthusiasm, but some of your festive quirks are a complete overkill.

conversation with your boyfriend goes during festive season, you have a problem. A relationship in Mumbai is often akin to a longdistance one. Add to that the various events and fixtures during festive and wedding season, and the time we spend with our partners takes more of a beating. So, it’s understandable if your boyfriend is annoyed about how much attention your nails are getting, instead of him. We’re not telling you to give up on grooming to meet him, but you don’t really need to get your nails done every two days, do you? Also, the next time we spend too ‘I’ll take thIs, thIs and that’ We know that you need to look your best at seasonal parties. Help! — Priyanka Jain, Mahim Dear Priyanka, We’re glad that your boyfriend is genuinely happy for you, but as far as borrowing your car goes, we hope it’s just because he doesn’t realise that it is happening all too frequently. friendship. If an intimate relationship is based on a friendship, it is truly wonderful. However whether your friend wants to take the friendship one step further truly depends on her perception of this relationship. Give her time to feel her way. In the mean time, take the opportunity to assess your innermost feelings. Good friendships are hard to come by, so take things slowly.

Good Friendships Hard To Come By

I had an affair for two years and it has ended. It’s been four years now and I have recovered from it. Now I am very close to one of my best friends for the last eight years. She knows about my affair, and everything in my life and I, too, know everything about her. Being so close to each other, I never felt so crazy for her. Sometimes I miss her a lot. I did tell her about my feelings for her. She said she had the same feelings for me, but she is not ready to express herself and is not responding properly. I am confused whether I am doing the right thing or whether it's a compromise. FOR intimate relationships to work, the feelings

HIV Testing Before Marriage

has to be mutual. Both of you have been friends for a long time and this friendship has sustained the test of time. I am sure it is precious to both of you, and that neither of you would like to lose this

Do you recommend HIV testing of both the partners before marrying? Kindly also clarify what is the ‘Window Period’. PEOPLE are fast becoming aware of HIV testing before marriage, however the majority still does not know about the ‘window period’. If a person is infected with HIV, then the blood test (ELISA test for HIV antibodies) comes positive only after around three months. The initial period of three months when the test comes negative is known as the ‘Window Period’. This is a dangerous period, as it gives the false impression that a person is HIV negative, and the infected person can give the infection to others through unprotected sex. We strongly recommend two HIV tests with a gap of three months before marriage. Besides HIV, it is also necessary to test for one

more fatal disease that is transmitted sexually – ‘Hepatitis-B’. A carrier of Hepatitis-B appears healthy outwardly but could transmit the deadly disease to the partner through sexual contact. Syphilis, though fully treatable, is a dangerous sexually transmitted disease if undetected. It is particularly notorious as it plays hide-n-seek with the patient giving him/her false signals of selfrecovery, while it is progressing in the body. Thus a ‘VDRL test’ or ‘TPHA test’ for syphilis is a must in all the check-ups before marriage. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 103 points. Sentiment was mixed and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 26 were losers, 23 were gainers and 1 remained unchanged. Some buying was witnessed in power, infrastructure, banking, PSU, healthcare and metal stocks, while substantial selling was witnessed in realty stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 21.80%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined and has entered the over-sold zone. Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 7872 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 7817. Support (2) = 7770. Resistance (1) = 7920. Resistance (2) = 7975. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a long black body candle on substantially higher volumes. This is negative. Further, the index has dropped above its 5 day’s moving average. The index is now below its 5, 15 and 25 day’s moving averages and all the three averages are negatively trended. Moreover, the velocity parameters too indicate weakness. All these indicate a negative bias and the possibility of a further decline unfolding. Incidentally, the index is approaching a major support level at the 7816 points level. There is a possibility that the index could find some support and reverse from there. However, if it declines below it, then a further decline could be expected. Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is below the –DI line but both lines are converging (positive if it continues). The ADX is flat while the Market Index is falling. No signal here. Equity funds have given an annualised return of around 23% as against 13% by CNX Nifty between April 1997 and September 2014. During the same period, Reliance MF's equity funds have given annualised return of 24.27% on an average, rating agency Crisil said in a report. The study was commissioned by

Reliance Mutual Fund (RMF). Among Reliance equity funds, Reliance Growth has given an annualised return of 27.07% and Reliance Vision 23.19%, it said. "Equity funds in the past 17.5 years have given annualised return of 22.6%. "Overall, equity funds of RMF have given annualised returns of 24.27% during the past 17.5 years, slightly above the industry average of 22.6%," he said. "RMF's composite performance index has grown over 40 times since inception in 1995 and has outperformed the broad market barometer CNX Nifty and Crisil-AMFI Equity Fund Index for one, three, five, 10 and 15-year periods ended September 2014," said the Crisil study. RMF, which managed funds valued at more than Rs 2,05,000 crore as on September

30, 2014, has outperformed the market barometers and topped on multiple counts to give better returns to its stakeholders, it said. The assessment is part of a study done by Crisil that analysed performance of Reliance Equity Composite Index (RECI) comprising 10 actively managed diversified equity funds. The funds under RECI, including Growth Fund, Vision Fund and Top 200 Fund, among others, managed assets of around Rs 26,000 crore, accounting for 11% of MF industry's open-ended equity AUM. "Reliance Growth Fund and Reliance Vision Fund have shown spectacular returns on long-term performance," Reliance MF Chief Executive Officer Sundeep Sikka said. "Within the mutual fund our focus will be on retail. We will try to bring more retail investors to the industry." There are 50 lakh retail investors on the company's fold at the moment, Sikka added.

T h e company, which employs 6,500 people across Europe, said it had signed an agreement with Geneva-headquartered Klesch Group, which it hoped would lead to a sale. The Long Products division includes operations in Scunthorpe and Teesside in England and Dalzell and Clydebridge in Scotland. It also includes sites in Workington and York, as well as other operations in France and Germany. "We will now move

into detailed due diligence and negotiations, though no assurance can be given about the outcome," Karl Koehler, chief executive of Tata Steel's European operations, said in a statement. "We have therefore decided to concentrate our resources mainly on our strip products activities, where we have greater cross-European production and technological synergies. We want to build a sustainable business in the UK and further develop our mainland Europe business and we are committed to providing the necessary leadership and financial resources to achieve that," he added. anada has strongly pitched in with the offer of its wood based high density house construction technology to enable India meet its ‘Housing for All by 2022’ target. This offer was made by the visiting Canadian Minister of International Trade Ed Fast during his meeting with the Urban Development and Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation Minister M.Venkaiah Naidu in New Delhi yesterday. The Canadian Minister made detailed queries about the new initiatives in urban sector including building of 100 Smart Cities, Housing for All and infrastructure development in urban areas of the country. He sought to know the clear timelines for execution of these schemes and specific areas requiring technologies and investments. Venkaiah Naidu gave a detailed account of various initiatives and suggested cooperation in respect of affordable housing, waste water recycling, sanitation and public trans-

port infrastructure in urban areas and building smart cities. Ed Fast elaborated on Canada’s expertise in wood based housing technology that enables multi-story construction that India can consider to meet its ambitious housing targets. He said, life span of such houses is about 60 years and is amenable for renewal. He also offered technology for waste water recycling. Ed Fast said, his country is keen to partner with India in an appropriate manner in building smart cities. The visiting minister noted that Canada is impressed by the new found sense of purpose and vigor in India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his country is keen to cooperate with New Delhi in all possible ways. Venkaiah Naidu directed the Secretaries of his two ministries to examine Canada’s offers for firming up areas of cooperation before the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with his Canadian counterpart during the forthcoming G-20 Summit.

and commodities group, formalising its intention to agree to a sale. The Klesch group, run by US billionaire investor Gary Klesch, is also investing in an oil refinery in Milford Haven in Wales. Tata Steel employs 30,500 people across Europe, including 17,500 in the UK. The Long Products division provides steel rail, rod, plate and other steel products to the construction and excavation industries. UK business secretary Vince Cable said he will look to meet Klesch to discuss the firm's plan's for Tata Steel's Long Products division. "The proposed sale shows the harsh reality of trading conditions in parts of the steel industry. I met the global head of Tata in India this week and he has personally re-affirmed to me his company's commitment to the British steel industry and to investing substantially in Port Talbot and strip steel," Cable said. India Home To 11th Largest Population Of Uber-Rich ndia is home to the 11th largest population of Ultra High Net Worth Individuals, but also figures among countries with "very high wealth inequality" with a large number of its residents being in the lower wealth strata, says a new report. According to the Credit Suisse Global Wealth report, India has 1,800 ultra high net worth (UHNW) individuals — 11th largest group globally, while the United States tops the chart with

isse, there are 1,000 adults who have wealth over USD 50 million and 650 people own more than USD 100 million. "Residents of India are heavily concentrated in the lower wealth strata, accounting for over a quarter of people in the bottom half of the distribution. However, its extreme wealth inequality and immense population mean that India also has a significant number of members in the top wealth echelons," the report said. The report further noted that

62,800 UHNW adults (equivalent to 49% of the global total). China occupies the second place and is home to 7,600 millionaires, followed by Germany (5,500, 3rd), United Kingdom (4,700, 4th), France (4,100, 5th), Russia (2,800, 6th), Canada (2,600, 7th), Taiwan (2,000, 8th), Brazil (1,900, 9th), South Korea (1,900, 10th) and Hong Kong (1,500, 12th). "While wealth has been rising strongly in India, and the ranks of the middle class and wealthy have been swelling, not everyone has shared in this growth and there is still a great deal of poverty," the report said. This is reflected in the fact that 95% of the adult population has wealth below USD 10,000. On the other end of the scale, a very small proportion of the population (just 0.3%) has a net worth over USD 100,000. However, due to India's large population, this translates into 2.4 million people. In India, according to Credit Su-

the millionaire segment would be the fastest growing group, projected to rise by 53%, from 35 million today to 53 million in five years' time. By 2019, China could see its number double to more than 2 million, while India could see a 61% jump in its millionaire count which would amount to 294,000, the report said. Substantial increases are also likely in Indonesia (64%), Mexico (57%), Singapore (50%) and Brazil (47%). Although the global economic environment has remained challenging, total global wealth has grown to a new record, rising by USD 20.1 trillion between mid2013 and mid-2014, to reach USD 263 trillion. According to Credit Suisse estimate, globally there are 128,200 UHNW individuals, defined as those whose net worth exceeds USD 50 million. Of these, 45,200 are worth at least USD 100 million and 4,300 have assets above USD 500 million.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2014

Mrunal Jain is an Indian Bollywood film and television actor. He started his career with the role of Krishna in 'Kahaani Hamaaray Mahabharat Ki'. After that he appeared as Hiten in 'Bandini'. He also acted in 'Hitler Didi' as Sameer. Currently he is playing Akash in 'Uttaran', in the lead role opposite Tina Dutta. Mrunal Jain is a simple boy who is rapidly climbing the ladder of success. We spoke to him about his stint in the telly-world.

By Sandeep Hattangadi

How do you feel working in a popular show like ‘Uttaran’? Uttaran gave me name, fame, everything. I play Akash which has changed my career. I have been paired opposite Meethi (Tina Dutta). The pairing has been appreciated.

How is your equation with Tina Dutta? She is a close friend of mine and helps me unconditionally. She is very helpful by nature. She agreed to do the 'Ramleela' shoot which was my idea. We had great fun clicking for it.

You’ve been known in the TV industry to push yourself, be it with taking up different roles or flaunting your amazing physique. Where does this confidence come from? Confidence doesn’t come overnight. To be honest, I was a skinny guy of 47 kgs and used to be called Hanger by my friends. The confidence does come from having a good physique and being fit, because it's altogether a different feeling. You're always charged up and have a complete different perspective about the way people look at you. Looks and physique does draw attention and make you feel important irrespective of the nature of one's profession. Your confidence surely boosts up when you feel good about yourself. You are known to push the envelope and experiment, not only when it comes to playing different roles, but also showing different facets of yourself to your audience. Do you think experimenting with roles and looks helps you grow as an actor and a person?

It’s an every actors dream to play different roles in his career. Every day you learn something and I want to do the same, even if it’s a small thing as an actor or a human being. When you think that you can’t do something, that’s when the challenge of it begins to break that thought which has come in your mind and say “I can do it“. I

got to learn a lot about my weaknesses and my strength each and every time I took up different roles. If you know your weakness, don’t keep it in mind and run away from it. Bring it in action and challenge yourself to make it one of your strengths. The feeling you get after reaching there, it's priceless.

lifestyle experiences from food, travel to makeover, hi-living etc. Jamie Oliver is a worldrenowned chef and in this new series, he will introduce his viewers to a new dimension of cooking keeping their budget in mind yet enjoying extravagant meals.” In each episode, Jamie will tackle food waste and demonstrate how a little imagination can turn leftovers into tasty meals. Jamie will also go inside families’ fridges, to find out where food is being wasted and show ways to help prolong the life of food and save the pennies.

Your journey as an actor from the days of 'Kahaani' to 'Uttaran' has been a fruitful one. How do you see your journey? I got my first break with Balaji Telefilms' 'Kahaani Mahabharat ki' where I got the chance to play Lord Krishna. Then I appeared in 'Bandini' as an angry Gujarati boy, to a conman in 'Looteri Dulhan', a spoilt brat businessman in 'Hitler Didi', amd now in 'Uttaran', a pandit/martial arts trainer. I have been really lucky. Unless I play different roles it won’t be challenging for me as an actor to break out of my comfort level and grow. I have worked with some of the best people and versatile actors in my career and have learnt a lot from them. In fact the break which I got between each show helped me, I was patient and worked on myself and waited for the right opportunity. So keep working on yourself because you never know when the opportunity might just come and you might just not be ready.

ubai-based singer-actor Ali Quli Mirza, the first wild card entrant of 'Bigg Boss 8', says the reality show is the perfect platform for him to promote his upcoming film 'Roar'. Ali will be making his Bollywood debut with the Kamal Sadanah-directed thriller, which will release on October 31. The actor said another major reason for him to join the TV show was its host Salman Khan, who had launched the trailer of 'Roar' earlier. “'Bigg Boss is the biggest platform for any actor, singer or performer. My film is releasing later this month. So, what better place to promote my film other than 'Bigg Boss'? Last season Elli Avram promoted her film 'Mickey Virus' from the house. So, that is one reason to be part of the show. Another reason is of course Salman Khan. “I consider him one of the biggest icons present today. He is so supportive of newcomers. He also launched the trailer of my film. To be a part of the show he hosts is a dream come true," Ali told PTI before entering the 'Bigg Boss' house. The actor said he is well aware of the happenings inside the house as he regularly watched the show, which is currently in its fourth week. "I am a fan of the show because of Salman Khan. I have watched episodes of previous seasons and all the episodes of the current one. So yes I have been following 'Bigg Boss'. I know what is happening," he said.

Eager aspirant

The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work and Vikram Chatterjee, the second runnerup of Cera India’s 'Best Cine Star Ki Khoj' will definitely vouch for it. Exactly a week after the finale of ZEE TV’s acting talent hunt show, Vikram Chatterjee has landed a role in the channel’s popular fiction drama 'Doli Armaanon Ki'. After finishing the shoot with 'Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah' team, Shahrukh Khan tweeted, “The simplicity, love & warmth with which they make the series. ONDON: Queens Park Rangers defender Rio Ferdinand has been charged with misconduct over a comment he made on Twitter, the Football Association announced on Tuesday. The FA did not identify the posting in question, but reports suggested it concerned a tweet in which Ferdinand had referred to the mother of another Twitter user as a "sket" -- a derogatory slang term for a promiscuous woman. "Queens Park Rangers defender Rio Ferdinand has been charged by The FA for misconduct in relation to a comment he made via social media," the FA said in a statement on its website. "It is alleged the comment posted on his Twitter account was abusive and/or indecent and/or insulting and/or improper. It is further alleged that this breach is aggravated pursuant to FA Rule E3(2) as it included a reference to gender." Ferdinand, 35, has until October 21 to respond to the charge. They soon doubled their lead, with Elano scoring a highlight-worthy goal. A foul on the edge of the box ten minutes later gave him the chance to whip in a trademark free kick, and he duly obliged, scoring a beautiful, curling strike to give his side a 2-0 lead to take into half-time. Manager Zico’s words would have been ringing in the Goa players’ ears as they came out for the second half with renewed purpose. SHILLONG: Riding high on NorthEast United FC's home win against Kerela Blasters, team co-owner John Abraham has said that his team will put up a strong fight in his side's next Indian Super League (ISL) match against Atletico de Kolkata. The actor and football enthusiast Abraham has, however, admitted that the next game would be one of the toughest considering the way they played to beat Mumbai FC at the inaugural match. "Kolkata is a tough side but we are a young team... We will give our heart. We'll put up a fight like no one has ever seen," Abraham told reporters. NE United FC pulled off a hard fought 1-0 victory against Kerela Blasters in a packed Indira Gandhi Stadium in Guwahati even as the latter were much better in the game statistically. "They are a bunch of warriors out there," he said, optimistic that his team would give Atletico de Kolkata a tough fight in the latter’s home turf. As for the composition of the NE United FC, Abraham said NE United FC was the only team in the ISL where domestic players had been drawn exclusively from the region. He also said the passion for football across the region was unmatched pointing out that his team co-owner and Shillong Lajong's MD Larsing M Sawyan was a football player himself. The team owners also revealed plans to take the ISL to Shillong, Imphal and Aizawl besides other state capitals in the north east in the coming editions of the league.

Goa pushed on in search of an equalizer, with local hero Clifford Miranda, on as a substitute, nearly scoring a stunning goal straight from a corner kick, before Chennaiyin keeper Emiliano Bracigliano pulled off a fantastic save to deny Randy Martins. UNE: If Mae Frayna Janelle hoped to shock her opponent Padmini Rout with her choice of the ‘Alekhine Defence’ on the very first move, then it was an effort wasted. “I had done my homework and realized she experiments with different openings and to a certain extent I was expecting this opening,” said Padmini Rout after scoring a victory in the 9th round of the LIC World junior Girls Chess Championship being played in Pune. Padmini has now tallied 6.5 points and is trailing one point behind Sarasadat Khademalsharieh. The game between other overnight joint leaders Ann Chumpitaz of Peru and Aleksandra Goryaachkina was in progress at the time of going to press. In the open section, most of the top board games were in progress at the time of going to press. The encounter between Bai Jinshi and Mikhail Antipov was one of the first ones to end in a draw. Jinshi with this draw has earned a ninth round Swiss League GM norm. N Srinath was defeated by Kamil Dragun while SL Narayanan who needs a draw to earn a GM norm was very much on course against Vidit Santosh Gujrathi as he was

better placed enjoying an extra pawn in a rook and knight each ending. Padmini Rout won a pawn in a tactical skirmish on the 20th turn which also saw the exchange of queens. Thereafter a flurry of exchanges followed and it appeared that despite an extra pawn, Padmini would really have to toil for a victory. Mae however failed to play accurately and ended on the losing side after 45 moves. In a thrilling encounter between Anna Iwanow and Sarasadat Khademalsharieh in a Spanish Opening, Anna surprisingly sacrificed a bishop for a couple of pawns in the

early stages of the Opening. Thereafter she tried to whip up a whirlwind attack even as both Kings stayed on their original squares without castling. Sarasadat’s Kingside pawns were totally shattered but her queen, rook and bishop pair then launched a counter-offensive to win the game after 25 moves. “ After the Opening inaccuracy, there was nothing much to do to win the game” said Sarasadat. Four more rounds are remaining in this 13 round gruelling event sponsored by LIC and Government of Maharashtra and Amanora, ONGC, Jain Irrigation and Everstone are the Associate sponsors.

Catholic Gym defeat CR Institute Myneni shocks seventh seed Coppejans at ATP Indore Open M

UMBAI: Catholic Gymkhana worked well as a team to hand Central Institute a 3-1 defeat in a Second Division match of the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) League, played at the St. Xavier’s ground, Parel on Tuesday evening. The gymkhana side got their goals through Terrance Fernandes, Kunal Bhandary and a late penalty converted by Gavin Fernandes while Saurau Pancital netted the lone goal for the railway outfit. In a keenly contested encounter, both teams tried their best to wrest the initiative but there was not much to separate the two especially during the first 35-minute period as the scores was tied at 1-all. Catholic Gym against the run of play forged ahead when Terrance found the net in the 10th minute, but Central fought back and a few minutes later restored parity through Pancital’s efforts. After switching ends, Catholic Gym played with more determination and did more of the attacking. Their efforts found success when midway through the second session Bhandary struck the second goal to help his team regain the lead (2-1). The Central defenders did a good job to keep the Catholic Gym attackers in check, but in the last few minutes of the game one of their defender in a desperate attempt to ward off a threat to goal committed a foul, which resulted in a penalty kick being awarded to Catholic Gym. Gavin stepped forward and coolly converted to give Catholic Gym a comfortable 3-1 lead, which they held till the end of the match. Earlier in another Second Division encounter, Gray Athletic and Jolly Boys shared two points as they played out a tame goalless draw. Results – Second Div: Catholic Gymkhana 3 (Terrance Fernandes, Kunal Bhandary, Gavin Fernandes) beat Central Railway Institute 1 (Saurau Pancital). Gray

MARUSSIA ANGERED AT BIANCHI CRASH REPORT L Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2014

ONDON: The Marussia Formula One team have slammed media reports that Jules Bianchi and team officials ignored safety measures before the horrific crash that left the Frenchman fighting for his life in Japan. The 25-year-old collided with a recovery vehicle during the Japanese Grand Prix earlier this month. Marussia issued a statement on Wednesday vehemently denying that he had failed to slow down when marshals waved double yellow flags after Adrian Sutil's Sauber had skidded off at the same spot in heavy rain. The team also angrily rejected claims made by Germany's Sport Bild magazine citing "new information" that team officials had ordered Bianchi to speed up in order to stay ahead of Caterham's Marcus Ericsson at Suzuka. "The Marussia F1 Team is shocked and angered by

these allegations," said Marussia in a statement. "At a time when its driver is critically ill in hospital, and the team has made clear that its highest priority is consideration for Jules and his family, it is distressed to have to respond to deeply upsetting rumours and inaccuracies in respect of the circumstances of Jules' accident."

Bianchi was rushed to a local hospital after his sickening accident and underwent emergency brain surgery. He remains in a stable but critical condition, with his family continuing to hold a vigil by his bedside. "These allegations are entirely false," added Marussia. "Regarding point 1, Jules did slow down under the

double waved yellow flags. That is an irrefutable fact, as proven by the telemetry data, which the team has provided to the FIA. Regarding point 2, an audio copy of the full radio transmission between Jules and the team, and a written transcript, were provided to the FIA. It is quite clear from the transmission and the transcript that at no point during the period leading up to Jules' accident did the team urge Jules to drive faster or make any comments suggesting that he should do so." Race director Charlie Whiting has said Bianchi did slow down as required, without specifying by how much. Waved yellow flags mean drivers must slow and be prepared to stop if necessary. Formula One is considering imposing automatic speed limits as part of future safety measures to avoid a repeat of Bianchi's accident.

India outclass Pakistan 6-0 in Sultan of Johor Cup

J

OHOR BAHRU (MALAYSIA): Defending champions India bounced back from their loss to Great Britain in style with a 6-0 thrashing of arch-rivals Pakistan in their third match of the Under-21 Sultan of Johor Cup at the Taman Daya Stadium. The two teams played traditional hockey in the first 15 minutes but the Harjeet Singh-led side started its dominance soon after and the aggression paid off with a penalty-corner conversion by forward Imran Khan in the 22nd minute. The vice-captain's powerful strike was defended by Pakistan goalkeeper Muhammad Khalid but he had no answer to Imran's rebound, which gave India the lead. The Indian team soon doubled its score through Parvinder Singh from open play in the 34th minute. Armaan Qureshi continued India's surge with another field goal in the 49th minute. India struck again four minutes later, this time through Harmanpreet Singh

from a penalty corner. Varun Kumar converted another penalty corner in the 67th minute. Still hungry for more, Armaan netted his second goal of the match via a penalty corner to make it sixnil for India and coach Harendra Singh was sure satisfied with the performance. "It's good win but there's still lot of areas to improve," said Harendra. "I'm happy we didn't lose our emotions. The input given to the players were well executed by them. "I have to give credit to my players. They switch from fast play to holding the ball very well. It was a display of maturity," he added. India, who beat New Zealand in their first league game, will take on hosts Malaysia on Friday. In another interesting game, the Australian U-21 side came from three goals down to edge past New Zealand 4-3 and stay atop the league table in the sixnation tournament.

Manoj ton gives East LGooch rubbishes KP allegations about Flower, Prior opening day honours ONDON: Former England captain Graham Gooch has rubbished Kevin Pietersen's views in his controversial autobiography about former coach Andy Flower and wicketkeeper Matt Prior and also urged England players led by Alastair Cook to break their silence on the issue in a broader manner. "Kevin Pietersen is entitled to have his say. He has been a match-winning player for England. I am sad to read his comments and I do not concur with many of his views," Gooch told 'The Daily Telegraph' newspaper. Gooch termed Flower as England's anchor. "I call Andy England's anchor. AHLI: Skipper Manoj Tiwary led from the front with an unbeaten century as East Zone managed to score 278 all out against West Zone on the opening day's play of the four-day Duleep Trophy quarter-final. Put into bat, East lost early wickets but Tiwary (100 not out) batted well with the tail to give the team total a semblance of respectability as Laxmi Ratan Shukla also made a significant contribution of 31-ball-54. From the West, new-ball bowler Dhawal Kulkalni (362) led from the front to help bowl out the opposition in the final session of play. West were 10 for no loss at stumps. West Zone skipper Cheteshwar Pujara though will rue the fact that his bowlers could not seize the initiative even after having East on the mat at 116 for five and subsequently 200 for seven at tea. It was Manoj, who fought gallantly for his 100 off 140 balls that had four boundaries and six huge sixes. He was never bogged down as wickets fell at the other end. In fact when Shrikant Mundhe (2-56) cleaned up Basant Mohanty (8), Manoj was batting on 91. He carried Ashoke Dinda (0) with him as he hit a six and then drove Kulkarni towards cover to scamper home for a double as he completed his 19th century in first class

determination to prepare for every format of the game. He always looked to promote attacking ideas to win matches," Gooch, who was the batting coach during Flower's tenure, said.

"He brought a new belief to players following a period of turmoil - at least that's what I noticed during my involvement as batting coach. He had strength of character and integrity, and as a stu-

dent of the game was always looking to embrace new training methods and ideologies. He created a topclass atmosphere as mentor and motivator. "When Kevin had been dropped for messaging South Africa's players about Andrew Strauss in 2012, it was Andy who wanted to be conciliatory and build bridges. If the allegation over the message's content was accurate, it was unforgivable and lot of people were saying there was no way back for KP after that episode. But Andy told me he was keen to repair the damage." Gooch said he does not remember about senior players bullying juniors for dropping catches. "I certainly don't remember any contretemps about dropped catches.

Danish shuttlers allege match-fixing offers during Thomas Cup cricket in 139 balls. As luck would have it, Dinda was run-out off the very next delivery to bring curtains to the innings in 75 overs. At the start, once opener Ramiz Neemat was out cheaply, Natraj Behra (25) and young left-hander Sudeep Chatterjee (37) added 54 for the second wicket. Brief Scores: East Zone 278 all out in 75 overs (Manoj Tiwary 100 no, LR Shukla 54; Dhawal Kulkarni 3/62) lead West Zone 10/0 (Aditya Tare 2*, Vijay Zol 8*) by 268 runs.

UALA LUMPUR: Badminton's governing body has asked police to investigate claims by the world No 9 and another Danish player that they were approached to throw matches. Badminton World Federation (BWF) president PoulErik Hoyer told the Danish Broadcasting Corporation that the case was the "biggest" he could remember. Singles player HansKristian Vittinghus, who ranks ninth, and doubles player Kim Astrup told the broadcaster that they re-

ceived offers to their Facebook accounts by a Malaysian man, who said he had previously fixed matches in the Singapore Open and the Thomas Cup. "It's against everything I stand for as a badminton player. I was never in doubt that the Badminton World Federation should be notified immediately, and today I'm happy that we had him reported," Vittinghus said. Astrup, who said he was offered between 2,500 and 3,000 euros ($3,200 and $3,800) in addition to being

able to bet on his own game, added he was "not surprised" match-fixing took place in badminton. "But I am surprised that it is taking place at the highest level. Occasionally one sees results that seem unbelievable, but here there's real evidence that match fixing takes place," he said. The Malaysia-based BWF has given no details on the match-fixing offer. But it said in a statement on Monday that it had reported the alleged offer to the police and "has been cooperating fully

in an ongoing investigation into these matters". "BWF is very satisfied that the players who were contacted about the match-fixing offer completely rejected it and also reported the case through the BWF 'whistle blower' system that has been set up precisely to handle such incidents," Hoyer said in the statement, adding the BWF took "all reports of match-fixing allegations absolutely seriously". A BWF official declined further comment on Wednesday.
