A happy-go-lucky man! He needn’t look into any official matter since he has the post of ‘minister of state’ without any administrative powers.

iving up to its reputation of rendering good patient care, the Nair Hospital Dental College yesterday celebrated the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon's Day by performing 35 wisdom tooth extraction surgeries free of charge. It may be recalled that the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon's Day was first initiated in India on February 13, 2013 by Dr Neelam Andrade, Professor and Head of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery department at Nair dental hospital. Significantly, this day is celebrated across the world. Last two years this day is celebrated in the Nair Dental Hospital. This year around, to mark this day the impaction camp was or-

occasion, a souvenir highlighting the activities of the trust was released recently by the Founder & Managing Trustee Mahavirprasad G. Saraf. Mahavirprasad, 81, started the trust in 1959. During the last 55 years, the trust initiated and

accomplished innumerable welfare projects such as social service, educational endeavours, women's welfare, child development, rehabilitation of the handicapped, relief of visually challenged, health care, sports development, patronising art, literature and culture, etc. In its first step, the trust constructed Shree Hanuman Mandir in Malad (East), built the Saraf Matru Mandir, a Dharamshala, installation of 19,952 benches at public places and efforts are still on. The contribution featured thrice in Limca Book of Records. For thirsty commuters, the trust set up 97 pyaus at railway stations, which is also a record of sorts. For the benefit of patients, Mahavirprasad has been responsible for setting up a 10,000 sq.ft. OPD, 9,000 sq.ft. Imaging Centres and a Maternity ward at Nanavati Hospital, Burns Ward at V.N. Desai Hospital, Eye OPD, 23 Ambulances, Eye camps, and the list goes on. In the field of education, the trust has set up the Ghanshyamdas Saraf College, Durgadevi Saraf Junior College, Durgadevi Saraf Institute of Management Studies, Centre of Excellence, Learning Centre, Library and Reading Room, 2 Hostels for Adivasi Boys and Girls, Computer Centres, Balwadi, etc.

Also noteworthy is Mahavirprasad's contribution to women's welfare, social service, sports and the arts. Mahavirprasad has received many honours. The President, VicePresident, Chief Minister and other voluntary organisations have bestowed upon him with many honours. He has been aptly selected as one of the 'Mumbai's Heroes' in a poll conducted by a city eveninger. Truly, Mumbai needs a hero like Mahavirprasad G. Saraf, for his selfless service to the society.

Socialising with neighbours can save the planet

Socialising with your neighbours leads to more planet-friendly behaviours than spending time with friends or family, a new research has claimed. People who socialise with neighbours are more likely to 'keep up with the Joneses' on green behaviours, including water and energy conservation, buying organic fruits and vegetables, and driving less, researchers said. "These findings suggest that our neighbours play a unique and key role in getting people to act on climate change," said study author Thomas Macias of the University of Vermont (UVM). "Surprisingly, these green outcomes were higher with neighbours than family relatives or close friends," he said.

An Indian cricket enthusiast gets his head painted in the colours of the national flag at a saloon offering special cricket World Cup-themed hair styling at Bandhus Hair Studio in Dadar. The defending champions will meet arch rivals Pakistan on February 15.

Researchers blame the differences, in part, on the overwhelming similarity of loved ones due to shared cultural and socio-economic upbringings. "This similarity provides emotional benefits, but limits our exposure to important new ideas," said Macias. In contrast, neighbours are relatively diverse enough to expose us to greater amounts of new information, such as environmental issues and practices. And shared geography means neighbourhood discussions will naturally gravitate towards sustainability matters. To identify predictors of green

behaviour, researchers used the 2010 US General Survey, the largest and most recent national collection of Americans' environmental attitudes and behaviour. They compared green outcomes with three variables: personal relationships, generalised trust and participation in community organisations. "Neighbours can be important role models. Backyard conversations, sidewalk exchanges and neighbourly visits may be some of the best ways to learn about environmentally friendly practices," Macias said.

vert the playground.MNS corporator Samita Naik said, “The fight to save the playground is on and a ballot was also conducted wherein 6,883 people voted in support of the playground.”

38-year-old imitation jewllery-making businessman's dead body was found at Madh-Marve on Friday morning. According to police sources, the deceased hasbeen identified as Vipul Shah, his wife had filed a missing complaint after he

went missing from his residence on February 5. He used to stay with his family in Borivli, but from the last few months he was facing huge losses in business, and this may be the cause for this extreme step. On Friday morning, Malwani police got a message from the Control Room, informing them of a body floating around the Madh

beach. As per the direction, Malwani police reached the spot and found the body. Later, they took the highlydecomposed body to Bhagwati Hospital to know the cause of death. After searching the missing records from adjoining police stations, Malwani police came to know about a missing complaint of Vipul Shah, that had been filed by

his wife with the description. On that basis they called Mrs. Shah at the police station and later took her to Bhagwati Hospital where she identified her husband. “On the basis of primary information, we have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR), but we are investigating the case further,” the officer added.

single notice was sent to her from the court warning her to attend the hearings. And on October 2014, she was arrested. The sources from the Byculla ladies jail told the ADC that Navalkar was produced at Girgaum court on Monday. Last week also she was produced in court.

hile the colleges of Mumbai are concerned about the academics of the students, they are also starting important facilities to take care of the health of students. Though earlier only first aid kits were available in colleges, doctors have now been engaged. These doctors have been placed in the college premises to provide quick medication to students. Rather than waiting for a doctor to reach the college for treatment and risk the student's life, colleges have decided to have a doctor on the campus itself. As per norms of the University, a college should compulsorily have a first-aid kit for its students. Depending upon the emergency of treatment, the college has to call for a doctor or rush the student to the nearest hospital. Parents have to be informed about the same, after which the parents have to

take over the process of treatment and medication. Since the last few months, colleges have set up a medical room with a full-time doctor in the premises. Students get free treatment from these doctors. The doctors remain in the college premises from morning till evening until the college hours are over. Colleges are also planning to bring in ambulances for emergency cases. The ADC spoke to Dr Sangeeta Kohli, S.K. Somaiya College, Vidyavihar, which has a doctor in the college campus who said, “Rather than hunting for doctors or contacting nearby hospitals, it's the best way to have a doctor in the college premises itself. This will enable swift medical treatment for the students as well as the college staff. Even when students are suddenly unwell, they can take the necessary treatment from the doctor in the college.”

Sunil Tondwalkar willingly granted her wish and on Friday morning she was at Bhoiwada police station dressed in khakhi uniform interacting with the police officers on duty. Mahek Vinay Singh (8),

a resident of Pratap Ganj District in Uttar Pradesh, who has been diagnosed with bone cancer was undergoing treatment at the Tata Memorial Hospital for cancer from last one year. Before returning home after completion of her treatment, Mahek expressed her ardent wish to be a police officer. The doctors of the TMH got in touch with

an NGO called 'Make a Wish' and informed them about Mahek's wish.According to Deepak Bhatia from NGO Make A Wish, “We have been working from the last 12 years with the Tata hospital and when the doctors informed us about Mahek's wish we decided to fulfill it. Accordingly the Bhoiwada police was contacted who readily agreed to put a smile on the face of the child before she returns back to her home.” On Friday morning around 11:45 am, Mahek dressed in a khaki police uniform with a cap walked into Bhoiwada police station, where she was warmly greeted by the Senior PI, Sunil Tondwalkar. Mahek was taken inside the senior police inspector's cabin and was allowed to sit in his chair. Mahek who was happy to be in the police station playing role of police officer said, “When I grow up, I want to be a police officer so that I can arrest all the goons and make our country crime free”. Mahek after spending some time in the cabin of the senior police inspector went around the police station and interacted with other lady officers from the police station. “We are happy that the child will go back happy from Mumbai, and Mumbai police played its part to make the child's wish come true,” said Tondwalkar. He further added, “I am really impressed that such a small child thinks about the nation anda crime free society, I will wish and pray for a speedy recovery of the child”. MBMC Budget stuck in date knot, people spared tax hike

www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2015

By Suresh Golani

P

eople of Mira-Bhayandar have been spared an imminent hike in existing water taxes and the imposition of new ones this year. Reason: There is virtually no chance left for the budget reaching the General Body (GB) House for final approval before the stipulated time frame. Apart from a hike in existing water charges, the Standing Committee had mooted a proposal to levy a new 'Road Tax' in it’s property tax structure. While a hike of Rs.3 and Rs.12 per 1,000 litre water used by residential and commercial users respectively had been proposed, the new 'Road Tax' envisaged an additional 10 per cent levy to

the existing property tax structure. However the civic administration will have to wait till next year to impose any hike or levy new taxes. According to the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation Act 1949, it is obligatory on the GB to take a final call on the tax hike proposal on or before February 20, so that the new tax structure can be accommodated in the MBMC’s annual budget of 2015-16. Moreover, the tax hike comes into effect only if it is ratified by the elected members. However, with less then a week left, it is virtually impossible for the civic administration to call a meeting on or before February 20, owing to lack of clear working days left.

‘Hope Day’ for domestic helps in Thane By Suresh Golani

T

he Anti-Child Labour wing of the National Domestic Worker’s Welfare Trust (NDWWT) has organised a 'Hope Day' programme aimed at highlighting the plight of domestic workers and to spread awareness in the context to laws enacted to guarantee minimum wages, social security and education or vocational training for this large workforce. Around 300 youngsters will

participate in the event that is scheduled to be held at the Railway Hall in Thane (West) on Monday, Feb. 15. To protect the interests of the domestic workers, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) had on June 16, 2011, adopted Convention 189 that offers protection to domestic workers. Along with other social organizations, the NDWWT has been seeking certain amendments in the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000.

Attack on churches

RE churches under attack in India? US President Barack Obama thinks so. He appears to believe that there is religious intolerance — a happening which would have been condemned by Mahatma Gandhi. As many as six churches have been attacked. It is still not known who the culprits are. The police are saying they are all cases of theft. They are not prepared to accept that it is nothing but communal violence. If it were theft cases, why was it that the thieves singled out churches and not any other places of worship? In fact, it looks like the police have not taken the attacks seriously. There has been surprising silence on the part of the government. It was only when a school was attacked that the Prime Minister reacted. What must be noted is that this school is also run by Christians. It is not fair that reality should be totally ignored. It stares one in the face and it becomes clear that there has been some communal violence. We have a totally secular government at the Centre and it was expected it would take some prompt action. There are some extremist bodies like the VHP which openly preach communal violence. They have become more vocal after the BJP has come to power. It is a fact that the government does not agree with the communal views expressed by them, but it refrains from taking any action. The mischief let loose by some communal elements must be nipped in the bud.

UCH has been written by now about why the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lost the Delhi assembly elections with such a dismal performance and what propelled the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to a landslide victory. Not much space was given to analyze why the Congress failed to even open their account in one of the landmark battles to win Delhi as everyone including Congress stalwarts had anticipated decimation of grand old party. The results have shaken the entire political establishment, its echoes were heard in most of the state capitals, and the discussions were not merely about who won and who lost but concerns were raised about voting patterns and voters preferences. AAP had shown the way, skillfully strategized the elections and trounced the all-powerful BJP which has been working on spreading its wings in most of the states to ensure better representation in the Rajya Sabha. What made voters turn towards AAP, ignoring BJP's promises for better governance. The question is what changed since last Lok Sabha elections held in May 2014 when the BJP won all the seats in Delhi while it could not take even its tally to double digits. It was actually a role reversal for AAP which had miserably failed in the Lok Sabha after suddenly resigning and plunging Delhi assembly into suspended animation.

ple. The BJP has to sit up and take note of the main reason for its debacle in Delhi. It committed several blunders as it approached the Delhi elections. In the first place, it should have been held much earlier but the party vacillated not knowing whether to form a government or face the voters again. Should it give a face to its campaign by announcing a chief ministerial candidate also remained unresolved for a long time. At the eleventh hour the party selected flamboyant Kiran Bedi who was well-versed in political nuances of a keenly fought battle. Sudden arrival of Bedi really demoralized party's cadre visibly during the campaign. The party has carefully avoided discussing Modi wave during the campaign though Modi also participated in the campaign. The party does not feel that it

It will be foolhardy to simplify why AAP won, what factors were responsible for BJP's dismal performance and how the Congress which ruled the country for so many decades is wiped out from the Delhi assembly. There are myriad factors which are responsible for the outcome of elections which were fought as if the whole country is participating in the Delhi assembly elections. So many state assembly elections including Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir were held after the BJP formed the union government on its own under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi. But no election generated so much of hype and interest as witnessed in the Delhi elections. The BJP put in all resources it had to ensure a win in Delhi, still it lost to AAP in a very decisive manner. Surprisingly, the vote share of the BJP in Delhi has not declined proportionate to loss of seats. The decline in vote share is hardly 0.9 per cent but in terms of seats won it has lost heavily from 32 seats it has come down to three seats. Voters always think differently when they vote for the Lok Sabha and when they have to elect a state government. Indian voters are always seen doing balancing power so that the high and mighty does not trample on rights of common peo-

is the beginning of waning of the Modi wave as AAP muffler man, Arvind Kejriwal, generated a ‘Tsunami wave’ sweeping Delhi electorate. AAP not only concentrated on GenNext with its catchy slogans and high ideals of governance, but systematically usurped traditional Congress vote banks of Minorities and OBCs. The loss of Congress was AAP gain and the battle became straight fight between the BJP and the AAP as the Congress was nowhere in the picture. Though there was no formal alliance of non-BJP secular parties in Delhi elections, it appears that all anti-BJP forces joined hands to defeat BJP in Delhi. The consolidation of votes against BJP was mainly responsible for the kind of results Delhi witnessed. Right from the beginning, Kejriwal meticulously positioned AAP as the only alternative to the BJP which was almost certain to form a government in Delhi. Kejriwal's attacks were also directed against the party in power -- especially targeting PM Narendra Modi, ignoring the Congress Party's presence in the battle ground. Voters have also become impatient and want quick results or else they are ready to shift their loyalties. It will be a Herculean task

Someone Tougher Than Me..! I

decided to go through some of the books I’d got the year before: Right down the pile was Robert Schuller’s book, Tough Times Never Last, But Tough People Do! I knew there was something in the book that had touched me, and I opened it wondering what it was; my eyes went to the inner cover where my elder one had scribbled a note, “To Daddy!” she had written, “The toughest person I’ll ever know!” I had tears as I saw those words. “My little one,” I whisper, “I’m not half as tough as you think I am,” and I hear her saying, “Of course you are daddy, of course you are! You remember the time I was sick, really sick, mummy was crying, everybody was weeping but you sat by me on the bed, not a tear in your eye, I was scared dad, but you

for Kejriwal to fulfill promises given during the campaign and actually implement them. The BJP will have to rethink its political strategy and planning for the forthcoming assembly elections. The party which has poll alliances in states like Maharashtra and Punjab cannot take its poll allies lightly. It has to handle intra-party issues sensitively while implementing its plan of expanding party base in almost all states in the country. This has already put many NDA alliance partners on defensive. In Maharashtra, it was Shiv Sena's Uddhav Thackeray who described Delhi win saying that Tsunamis are more powerful than waves obliquely referring to the Modi wave which swept the last Lok Sabha elections. The BJP has to handle NDA partners with kid gloves as they need them badly to ensure smooth passage of legislations in Rajya Sabha.

looked me in the face and said I’d be okay? Do you remember?” “Oh yes, I do my child. I do remember you lying hot with fever, I do remember you looking at me with frightened eyes and that same fright fading from your eyes as I smiled at you, but

BOB’S BANTER Robert Clements child of mine, just before I sat by you, I had shut myself in my room and wept large tears; had cried aloud with fear! I was no tough father; I was the weakest man on earth. I cried out to a God above! Save my child!” I shouted. “I am a weak man, Oh God! I need your help. Give me strength to go to her room and sit by her side without breaking down! Give me the strength

In the ensuing elections, the BJP will have to face regional forces rather than national party like the Congress which is still taking its own time in fine tuning strategy for its revival after its stunning defeat in the Lok Sabha elections. The Delhi results where the party failed to open its account has further demoralized the party workers and will be in hardly any position to take on the BJP. Most of the states which saw better performance by the BJP were Congress ruled states like Maharashtra, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana and Jharkhand. It was easier to dethrone Congress but it may not be so simple with the regional parties which see the Delhi result as a sort of relief. By bagging Delhi with handsome gains, will AAP now try to expand its base beyond Delhi is the question being discussed in the Congress as well as the BJP circles. Both the national parties know that Kejriwal can be innovative as he has no baggage from past nor he has to worry about playing proper traditional electoral politics. The states going to poll in coming months are mostly ruled by regional forces except Assam. The outcome of Delhi is an eye opener for the BJP which will soon have to face voters in second most important state in the country — Bihar — which is in a political turmoil. The party will have to redraw its strategy for Bihar, take into confidence leaders like Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan before it faces the voters. Any consolidation of anti-BJP votes in Bihar will be difficult to handle. The moves are already on to form an alliance of socialist parties — like Nitish Kumar led JD(U), Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD, Congress and Sharad Pawar-led NCP. One thing is almost clear due to Delhi results, the BJP headquarters will start taking its state units more seriously and redraw its poll strategy to face electorate in coming months. to give her strength, Oh God!” “And you came back and smiled at me!” “Someone tougher than me made me tough inside!” “And dad?” “Yes, my child?” “That time when you were broke, and you fought back? What a fight dad, I watched and knew you’d win!” “You knew? I didn’t, my child!” “But you won!” “Not with my strength, oh no!” “The same Tough One who wiped your tears when I was sick?” “Wiped my tears when I was down, strengthened my resolve, ignited my determination and stood by me!” I open the book and look at her child like handwriting, “Child of mine,” I whisper, “I know I’ve introduced you to that Tough One up there, and there will never be a day when you’ll ever be afraid..!” bobsbanter@gmail.com

The hot, sultry Sunny Leone, who is the new pin-up poster girl in tinsel town and is riding high with the success of 'Ragini MMS2', is now all set to wow the audiences in her forthcoming film ‘Ek Paheli Leela’. The glamour girl had a candid chat with Sandeep Hattangadi. Some excerpts.

INTERVIEW

Was the film ‘Ek Paheli Leela’ a challenge for you? Yes. Certainly. I am playing a triple role in a film for the first time All the three roles are challenging, especially playing a Rajasthani girl and I had to speak in a Rajasthani dialect which was difficult for me to pick up. As I am speaking Hindi fluently for the first time it was challenging for me. I play a mysterious princess who falls in love with a commoner played by Rajneish Duggal and I had to sport a tanned dark look for the film. The film is a musical thriller shot in Jodhpur and other Rajasthani locations. Tell us something about the cast of the film. The tall, handsome Mohit Ahlawat plays a dashing prince in the film, the talented, hunky Rajneish Duggal plays the Rajasthani lover boy and the comeback star Jas Arora plays the villain of the piece. Also Jay Bhanushali has a major role. Rahul Dev and Shivani Tanksale play other important roles. Was the director Bobby Khan any help to you? There are more than nine song sequences in the film which Bobby really helped me to dance He also worked on my Hindi dialogue delivery. Abhi main Hindi fluently bol sakti hoon.

Reportedly you have a dance sequence based on the hit song ‘Dholi Taro Dhol Baje’ from the film ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’? Yes. I am dancing to the hit song and it was a great challenge for me as I am a huge Aishwarya Rai Bachchan fan. I took great pains to shoot this song and it has turned out really well. The song is the highlight of the film. The other songs composed by Amaal Malik are also popular. How did you feel while working with three handsome leading men? It was really chaotic with three handsome men after you (laughs). But yes Mohit, Jas and Rajneish are all great guys, all fun on the sets. On the tough, heated locations of Rajasthan we needed such men to keep our sanity right and do

strenuous work. Mohit is the quieter one but Rajneish and Jas were real great fun on the sets.

Reportedly there is a lot of ‘dare-bare’ skin show in the film? Yes, to a certain extent. But it is the requirement of the script. It has been shot aesthetically. Especially in one bold sequence I was drenched in milk and I had a difficult time shooting it.

What are your forthcoming projects like? I have completed filming for the action thriller 'Tina and Lolo' which is slightly based on 'Charlies Angels' and 'Lara Croft' and have also wrapped up Milap Zaveri's sex comedy 'Mastizaade' alongside Tushar Kapoor and Vir Das, which will be releasing on May 1, 2015. I am currently filming for two projects, the "dramedy" 'Kuch Kuch Locha Hai' earlier titled as 'Patel Rap' co-starring Ram Kapoor and Evelyn Sharma and Jasmine D'Souza's 'One Night Stand' opposite Tanuj Virwani. This month I will kickstart filming for my next entitled 'Tera Beimaan Love' alongside Rajneish Duggal which will be helmed by Rajeev Chaudhry. Sunny days seem to be here for Sunny Leone!

dazzling beauty

M

adhubala was an icon of the Hindi film industry and she gained a level of success that actors only dream of. Her beauty was light, delicate and heavenly. No wonder she was called the Venus of the Hindi film industry and she continues to mesmerise cinema lovers everywhere, years after passing away. Madhubala's extraordinary good looks and talent were instrumental in helping her get her first lead role opposite Raj Kapoor in ‘Neel Kamal’ in 1947. She was only 14 then. Her performance was well received by the audiences. Her 1949 release ‘Mahal’ heralded the arrival of a superstar. Her enigmatic presence and performance upstaged the seasoned Ashok Kumar in this super hit film. Madhubala acted in more than two dozen films in four years after ‘Mahal’. Many of them were big hits. Madhubala became the biggest female star and acted with top notch actors like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Bharat Bhushan, etc. and worked with top directors like Kamal Amrohi in ‘Mahal’, K. Asif in

‘Mughal-e-Azam’ and Guru Dutt in ‘Mr and Mrs 55’. In the early 50s she acted in well received films like ‘Sangdil’, ‘Tarana’, ‘Badal’ . Shockingly in 1955 her well-publicised film ‘Amar’ with Dilip Kumar was a box office disaster giving a jolt to her reputation as a dependable actress. But she managed to give her career a fillip with the box office hit in 1958, ‘Howrah Bridge’ in which she starred opposite Ashok Kumar. The song from this film “Aayiyeh Meherbaan…” is celebrated to this day. ‘Howrah Bridge’ was followed by box office bonanzas like 'Jaali Note' with Dev Anand, 'Kala Pani’ , ‘Phagun’ with Bharat Bhushan, ‘Chalti ka Naam Gaadi’ with Kishore Kumar and ‘Barsat ki ek Raat’ opposite Bharat Bhushan again. Madhubala acted in over 60 films in her short film career. In 2008 a postage stamp was issued by India Post to commemorate Madhubala. Madhubala, born on Valentine’s Day, never found true love in her life. She came with a hole in her heart and left with a broken one.

'Rock On 2', a sequel of the hit 2008 Indian rock musical film of the same name, will also see Pracchi Desai in a pivotal role. Debutant director Shujaat Saudagar has come on board to helm the film, which will be produced by earlier producers Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. "@ShraddhaKapoor welcome aboard to Rock N

Shraddha has recently wrapped up the shooting of dance based drama 'ABCD 2'. Thank you for your SANE response. Amazed by your maturity at this tender age. Love." The FIR was registered by the Mumbai Police on Thursday against 14 persons including actors Karan Johar, Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt, besides the organisers and participants of the controversial 'AIB Knockout' show, on several charges including obscenity.

Jacqueline to play a Bharatnatyam dancer in ‘Turbanator’

Madhubala’s birth anniversary falls on February 14, which also happens to be Valentine’s Day, celebrated by lovers all over the world. Rajesh V. Gaur and Suneel V. Gaur chronicle the life and times of the biggest actress of Hindi films, Madhubala.

Pamela Anderson files for divorce L

OS ANGELES: Former 'Baywatch' star Pamela Anderson has filed for divorce from poker player and third husband Rick Salomon yet again. Anderson and Salomon, both 47, first wed in 2007 but got an annulment just two months later, reported People magazine. The couple then rekindled the flame, marrying in January 2014. Six months after tying the knot, the actress filed for divorce but asked a judge to dismiss her petition in August 2014. The next month, she remained optimistic about the on-and-off relationship. "It's a real marriage. It has its ups and downs. I think we're doing fine," she had said. Anderson was previously married to musicians Tommy Lee and Kid Rock.

It’s a blink and you’ll miss it role: Ora on ‘Fifty Shades...’

L

OS ANGELES: 'Iron Man' actress Gwyneth Paltrow has said she and estranged husband Chris Martin went through a year of quiet separation before making their split public in 2014. The 42-year-old actress and Martin began drifting away, when she was filming 'Mortdecai' in 2012, and asked costar Johnny Depp for break-up advice, reported Aceshowbiz. "Nobody knew what Chris and I had been going through, so I didn't say 'Hey, this is what's happening.' But I did ask him mostly children-centric questions, like 'How is it on them? How did you do it?'" she said. At that time, Depp had just split from his longtime love Vanessa Paradis. Paltrow and the 37-year-old Coldplay singer, who are parents to two kids Apple and Moses, have remained amicable exes since splitting in March 2014.

L

ONDON: Singer Rita Ora, who made her acting debut with 'Fifty Shades of Grey', has hardly appeared in the film, which is based on the bestselling trilogy by E L James. Ora, 24, who plays Christian Grey's sister, took to Twitter to inform about her small role. "@FiftyShades London premiere tomorrow! It's a blink and you'll miss it role, but I'm so happy to be part of it!." Ora posted on Twitter. A number of Twitter users who have seen the film ahead of its Friday release have also spoken out about Ora's barely-there role. "Rita Ora has spent the last year promoting her role in 50 SHADES OF GREY. Thrillingly, she has a literal second and a half of screen time," Kyle Buchanan tweeted. Abby wrote, "This is what Rita says in Fifty Shades: 1. "She's here?" 2. "Oh my God, you exist." 3. "Uck, Seattle baseball." 4. (sentence in French)."

Uma Thurman’s plastic surgery rumours debunked

OS ANGELES: Uma Thurman's make-up artist is "quite surprised" by plastic surgery rumours surrounding the actress, saying he skipped mascara and false eyelashes to create a "more editorial" look. Thurman has been surrounded by the plastic surgery rumours after she looked different and almost unrecognisable on the red carpet of 'The Slap' premiere. "Frankly, I'm quite surprised by the conversation," said Troy Surratt. "By now I would have thought that we were all open to and knowledgeable of the role that makeup plays in the world of fashion and particularly celebrity, as a medium for creative self expression.”

DOMINOES 347

17

A normal set of dominoes — that is, one instance of every (unordered) pair of numbers from 0 to 6 — has been arranged irregularly into a rectangle; then the number in each square has been writen down and the dominoes themselves removed. Your task is to reconstruct the pattern by arranging the set of dominoes to match the provided array of numbers. Please note that each domino is a unique one and occurs only once in each puzzle.

SMILE AWHILE CODE WORDS 230

In each puzzle every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number; the same number represents the same letter throughout the puzzle. To start you off, we give you three letters and the numbers which have replaced them. When you’ve filled in these letters throughout the puzzle you’ll have enough clues to start guessing words and discovering other letters. To help you keep track, as you find a letter, slot it into the grid provided and cross it off the list. To help you keep track, as you find a letter, slot it into the grid provided and cross it off the list.

A drunk staggers out of a bar and lets go of a loud belch just as a couple are walking in the door. The man yells at the drunk, "How dare you belch before this woman!" The drunk says, "I'm sorry! I didn't know she wanted to go first." One day a man was walking in the woods when he got lost. For two days he roamed around trying to find a way out. He had not eaten anything during this period and was famished. Over on a rock ledge he spotted a bald eagle. He killed it, and started to eat it. Surprisingly, a couple of park rangers happen to find him at that moment, and arrested him for killing an endangered species. In court, he pleads innocent to the charges against him, claiming that if he didn't eat the bald eagle he would have died from starvation. The judge ruled in his favor. In the judge's closing statement he asked the man, "I would like you to tell me something before I let you go. I have never eaten a bald eagle, nor ever plan on it, but what did it taste like?" The man answered, "Well, it tasted like a cross between a whooping crane and a spotted owl!"

HITORI 347

The objective of Hitori is to mark out the incorrect cells. The rules are: a) A Number may never appear more than once in each row or column. b) Marked or incorrect cells are never adjacent in a row or a column. c) Unmarked cells create a single continuous area, undivided by marked cells.

TetraVex is a challenging brain teaser. The object of the game is to fill the grid with the tiles so that the patterns on the adjacent edges of each tile match, much like aligning domino tiles. The object of the game is to place all the tiles in the grid so that the figures on the adjacent edges of each tile match. You can place any tile anywhere in the grid, but you cannot place a tile in the grid if its edges do not match all of its neighbors. Find a digit that occurs only once on a given puzzle. You know that this digit must lie along the outer edge of the grid, since there are no other tiles that can match it. You can simplify solving by cutting out the nine squares and juggling them in the grid.

CONFIDENT NEW ZEALAND

WARY OF MALINGA’S X-FACTOR AFTERNOON DESPATCH & COURIER l www.afternoondc.in

C

HRISTCHURCH: Camps with contrasting moods -- New Zealand brimming with confidence and Sri Lanka searching for consistency -- launch the cricket World Cup here today. New Zealand, co-hosts with Australia, have their tails up after a 4-2 domination of Sri Lanka in a recent warm up series followed by a resounding warm-up win this week over tournament heavyweights South Africa. Sri Lanka followed their New Zealand losses with a defeat to lowly-ranked Zimbabwe, although throughout their period acclimatising to New Zealand conditions they have been without their ODI ace Lasith Malinga. Malinga has the X-factor and he will make the difference, according to Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews. Senior New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor rates the round-arm quick "the best death bowler probably who

has ever played cricket". But despite the spectre of Malinga, who returns after six months sidelined by an ankle injury, New Zealand remain favourites to set the tournament alight with a home win and are widely regarded as potential finalists. "I don't know if we'd be favourites, but everyone's saying we're a good shot," said wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi.

"If we go in with a positive mind frame and we know we can beat any side on our day then that's a good thing. If we go out and perform as we should we've got a big chance." New Zealand have devel-

NZ captain McCullum matures in time for World Cup mission

C

hristchurch: The Cricket World Cup which begins here today may be the tournament that sees the full flowering of Brendon McCullum, not only as a batsman or as New Zealand’s captain, but as a man finally comfortable in his own skin. McCullum’s feats with the bat in the past 14 months have already left little doubt he owns a place among the very best batsmen in the world, not just in one-day and Twenty20 internationals which once gave the best forum for the expression of his attacking game, but also in Tests. In 2014 he became the first New Zealander to score a test triple century, followed that with two double centuries and amassed more test runs in a calendar year than any New Zealand batsman had done before. More than that, as he toppled milestones and led New Zealand to unprecedented success — five Test wins in a

year, more than it had ever previously achieved — he seemed at ease with himself. The often brash, sometimes combative McCullum who sometimes frustrated, sometimes antagonized fans and other players, seemed to have been replaced by a calmer

oped into a well-balanced unit over the past year and are not fazed by the inconsistency of the Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum opening partnership. Coach Mike Hesson believes if they fail at the

and more thoughtful player, one more respectful of the game and his position in it. Asked today, on the eve of New Zealand’s World Cup opener against Sri Lanka, how different the Brendon McCullum of 2014 may be from the Brendon McCullum who played his first world tournament in 2003, he replied: “Quite different, I hope.” “When I was pretty young I was very naive, I hadn’t really traveled much and I didn’t really understand my game either,” he said. “I hope I’ve become a more rounded, a more worldly person who’s developed a bit of an understanding of the team he’s playing in, his position in the side and his position in life as well. “In 2003 I sat on the sidelines and watched and tomorrow I get the opportunity to lead the team out, so it’s been an interesting ride - I hope I’m a better cricketer and a better person now.”

top then it simply provides a chance for someone else to step up down the order. Kane Williamson and Taylor have been in impressive form at three and four as have Ronchi, fresh from an unbeaten 170 against Sri Lanka, and all-rounders Corey Anderson and Grant Elliott. They are also laden with talent in the bowling department, able to call on various combinations using Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Kyle Mills, Adam Milne and Mitchell McClenaghan with Daniel Vettori and Nathan McCullum providing spin options. Swing master Boult wrapped up his World Cup preparations with a five wicket bag against South Africa on Wednesday with Brendon McCullum and Williamson both producing half centuries. The 1996 champions and runners up in the past two tournaments in 2007 and 2011, are formidable when everything clicks but that has not been happening for them without Malinga. Mathews sees Malinga as "probably" the difference between Sri Lanka and New Zealand. "You can't write off the rest of our bowlers, we have fairly experienced bowlers, but obviously Lasith has the X-factor," he said. Sri Lanka's batting strength is headed by Sangakkara, the leading ODI run scorer in 2014 just shading Mathews and both well clear of the third highest scorer, India's Virat Kohli.

Another reason was that I wanted youngsters to get their share of opportunities," Jayawardene, who will bid adieu to international cricket after the World Cup, told PTI in an exclusive interview. Asked how difficult will it be for Sri Lanka to get another supremely talented batting artist as Jayawardene, the former Sri Lankan captain sounded positive. "Sri Lanka has plenty of talented young cricketers and I am sure they will rise up and leave their own mark," said Jayawardene, who has more than 25,000 international runs (25,832) across three formats. Despite being one among the contemporary greats of the game, it is humility with which Jayawardene assessed his career.

TWO-BENCH THEORY: KOHLI’S WAY OF COUNTERING IRFAN AND BOUNCE

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his deputy Virat Kohli will be hoping to fire on all cylinders starting with their match against Pakistan on Sunday.

A

delaide: ICC events in recent years have witnessed the Indian cricket team devising unique ways of training and it was no different this time around with the side employing a unique 'two-bench' theory to counter the pace and bounce of Pakistani bowlers in its World Cup opener. During the last World T20 in Bangladesh, Indian bowlers were sending down deliveries to a 10-feet tall batting mannequin to hone their skills in channel bowling. This time the batsmen devised a unique throwdown session using two small benches. The idea behind the innovation is to get well equipped to counter the threat that 7 feet tall Pakistani paceman Mohammed Irfan could pose. After Virat Kohli practised at the main nets, he went to the corner of the St Peter's Main Oval ground to get some throwdowns from team's specialist Raghavendra. M

elbourne: Former India coach Greg Chappell says his relations with Sachin Tendulkar soured after the Australian had asked the Indian cricket icon to bat down the order at the 2007 World Cup. The 66-year-old Chappell's statement comes a few months after Tendulkar launched a scathing attack on the former Australia captain by referring to him as a "ringmaster" in his autobiography, 'Playing It My Way'. In an episode of 'Cricket Legends', aired on Fox Sports across Australia, Chappell said that the reason for their fallout was him suggesting that Tendulkar bat down the order during the tournament in the Caribbean. "I expected, I thought, that he would want to do what was right for the team. But he really wanted to bat where he wanted to bat and that was a real gulf between us," Chappell said on the show. India had a disastrous outing in the mega-event, getting knocked out in the first round itself.

Global search trends data reveals that Team India as the top popular team in this year's World Cup, followed by Australia, England, Pakistan and the West Indies. Among the marquee stars, Virat Kohli followed by Indian skipper Dhoni remained the most sought after player. The Indian duo are closely followed by Pakistan allrounder Shahid Afridi.

Chappell claimed that Tendulkar, now 41, initially agreed to his proposal, but later changed his mind. "He preferred to open the batting ... But in the World Cup in the West Indies, we needed him to bat down the order. That was where our problems were, we had other players who could bat at the top of the order. He agreed to it initially, but then he recanted and said he didn't want to do it. I forced him to do it and, from that point onwards, he didn't want to work with me again. In hindsight, I probably would have found a different solution." Tendulkar had, in his book, revealed that Chappell wanted him to replace Rahul Dravid just before the 2007 World Cup. "Just months before the World Cup, Chappell had come to see me at home and, to my dismay, suggested that I should take over the captaincy from Rahul Dravid," Tendulkar wrote. Chappell also launched a veiled attack on Ganguly without naming the former India skipper. "The challenge for Indian cricket was and probably always will be is that it is more important (for the players) to be in the team than to be in the best team in the world," Chappell said.

PAVILION PICK "Once they have been there for a while, they are quite happy just to keep their place in the side. What I was trying to encourage was for them all to continue getting better. We made changes that were quite successful but in the process it had created some problems particularly for me in relation to certain players. "In the process we had dropped off a captain (Ganguly) along the way and that set a chain going. He (Ganguly) signed off on the things he needed to do to stay in the team, but then never actually did what he had promised," he added.

Past records don’t count, says Bailey M

elbourne: Australia's recent domination of England in one-day internationals will not have a bearing on the result of the highprofile cricket World Cup opener between the traditional rivals, feels the co-host's skipper George Bailey. Numero uno side Australia followed an emphatic 4-1 series win in England last January with a tri-series victory at home this month to make it the clear favourites going into the mega-event that kicks off with a double at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Christchurch. "I'd love to say (past records) counts for something, but I honestly don't think it does," Bailey told reporters today. "England has made some really "Unfortunately we all start on positive changes to the way they zero tomorrow." play and their structure, and I perAustralia have won 13 of 15 ODIs sonally think they look really dan- against England over the past four gerous. years. The record in Melbourne is

even more one-sided, with England losing eight of their last 11 matches at the MCG - its last win coming way back in 2007. The MCG is expected to hold a near capacity crowd of around 90,000 for the match. "There's a lot of talk about a big crowd, a big tournament and a big clash to kick it off," Bailey said. "All things that the boys are very, very excited about." Australia's Test captain Michael Clarke will skip the match as a precaution as he makes his way back from hamstring surgery, but coach Darren Lehman has no doubt he'll play Australia's second match on February 21 against Bangladesh. "We're happy with the way he's pulled up and really happy with his progress," Lehman said. "We're going to stick to the plan and he'll play against Bangladesh."
