MPSC Exams on Oct. 15 Examinees given outstation centres

FOR OVER ONE LAKH STUDENTS

By Yatin Ingle

W

ith the students prepared to give their best at the Staff Selection Commission exams (SSC), a strange case scenario has arisen for the students. After the Maharashtra Public Sevice Commission (MPSC) declared the examination centers, the candidates were in for a shocker. The Commission has allotted the exam centers to the students of Mumbai in distant districts of Chandrapur, Nashik, Vidarbha and Aurangabad. This has put the candidates in a huge fix. With just a few days left for the exams, candidates are distinctly unhappy to travel for one single paper to the distant districts. Candidates have requested the commission for a change in the exam centers and

allot the nearest districts or cities to them. Every six months, the MPSC conducts competitive exams for vacancies in various government sectors. This year, the MPSC

exams have been scheduled on October 19 and October 26. On Wednesday, when the students checked their hall tickets and exam centers online, they were shocked to learn that the commission has allotted them centers which actually are distant districts rather

than 'Mumbai' which they had selected in their application forms as their exam center. On the other hand, the last minute booking for tickets has made it difficult for students to secure reservations and confirmations to travel. A candidate, on anonymity said, “I had chosen Mumbai as my center for the exams, and suddenly I have been allotted my exam center in Aurangabad. This is unfair, as at the last minute it is difficult to reserve tickets for travel as well as, we have two exams on different dates, it’s impossible for candidates to visit the city twice for the exams. The commission should find an alternative for the same, or we students would be a fix.” This year, around 1 lakh students will be appearing for the MPSC exam for the posts of

Income Tax officer, Excise Officer and various grade one exams of the state government. Candidates across the state will be appearing for the exams. Pradeep Sawant, Yuva Sena noted, “It is impossible for the students to go for the exams twice to distant cities as such. On the other hand, these candidates are already professionals and have regular jobs which makes it difficult for them to miss their offices and take leave. The commission has to find alternatives and also make it flexible for the candidates to travel to the closest exam centers within the city. Candidates as well the Yuva Sena has already written to the commission and are awaiting their reply as soon as possible.” yatin.ingle@afternoondc.in

1993 Serial blasts accused tells Judge G.A. Sanap and his lawyer Haider Mooman... By Santia Dudi

I

n an interesting development in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, an accused surprised the proceedings in the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) as he filed an application of no-confidence against the sitting TADA judge G A Sanap and his own lawyer, advocate Haider Mooman. Feroz Abdul Rashid, an ac-

‘I DON’T TRUST YOU!’ cused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, while filing the application stated that he has no faith in the judge and the lawyer as well and requested for the trial to be transferred to another court. Based on this, Judge Sanap

directed CBI to file its reply. The grounds for the no-confidence were not mentioned in the application and it's likely to be an attempt to delay the case and derail the trial. Special Public Prosecutor

D N Salvi told ADC, “A noconfidence application was filed by the accused on Tuesday. But as it was not properly documented, it was rejected at that time, and it wasn't taken on record at that time.”

Sources confirmed the filing of the application. The applicant Feroz Rashid is an accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts which resulted in the deaths of 257, and injured 713. According to CBI, the 54-

year-old accused is a close associate of Dawood Ibrahim, and helped land RDX and firearms in Mumbai prior to the 1993 serial blasts. Between 2004 and 2010 (before his arrest in February 2010), Khan divided his time between West Asia and Koparkhairane, a village in Navi Mumbai, and lived under an assumed name. He allegedly made a living forging passports and running a mobile phone business.

o keep track of the progress and current development of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) in Maharashtra, a session was organised in the World Trade Centre where CEO of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) Bhushan Gagrani spoke about the developments in the DMIC project. Gagrani said, “Maharashtra will be part of two ambitious corridors, one being the DMIC and the other Bengaluru–Mumbai economic corridor which has been proposed. Speaking about DMIC, the concept of the corridor is based on the transit approach for cargo, comfortable transfer of goods and movement of goods for other industries. The DMIC will pass through the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, NCR Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. It will re-

duce the distance between Mumbai to Delhi from 60 to 36 hours and 2.3 million jobs will be provided in the areas.” Yoshimitsu Kawata, chief consul of the Consulate General of Japan, said, “Japan has got 4.5 billion dollar for the project DMIC and in the next three years another 3.5 billion dollars will be spent on the project. There are 100 companies which have entered India and we want to increase it to 2,000. There will be 300 Japanese companies to commence in Mumbai.” Speaking about the progress of the DMIC project, Gagrani, said, “Two centres in Maharashtra are taken in the top priority - Shendra in Aurangabad and Dighi Port Industrial area. Four thousand hectares of land have already been acquired. The MIDC has considerately taken in view that land acquisition will not happen without the consent of the farmers.” Azad Shrivastav | ADC

Issue of taxi permits postponed again By Aroosa Ahmed

T

he Regional Transport Office (RTO) which was to issue 7,800 permits by lottery today has postponed to the first week of November, citing the Model Code of Conduct at its excuse. The permits were cleared by the state government in June, now drivers have to wait another month before they can get their hands on those permits. “With the Governor's rule in Maharashtra and the election code of conduct applied all over the state, releasing the permits will not be done till the election results are out,” said a source in the RTO. He went on to say that the transport department has received applications for taxi permits from three

transgenders – two from south Mumbai and one from the suburbs. The transport department has nearly come to a standstill with the elections on and a majority of the RTO staff being employed for election duty. A.L. Quadros, leader of the Mumbai Taximen's Union is not surprised by this development. He said, “We knew that the issuing of the permits will be delayed because of the elections. The RTO offices function at a very slow pace. There are many licenses to be issued since February when the elections took place.”

Political bloopers

India has six registered national political parties, 36 registered state political parties, more than 650 regional political parties and some 24 up and coming political parties. Politicians are constantly forming and breaking alliances, jumping from one party to another and switching portfolios. No wonder Rahul Gandhi is finding it difficult to keep track of who's who in this

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was very particular what he ate and drank.

Gandhi and karela juice Mahatma Gandhi was always in perfect health. He used to take good care of his body. He was particular about what he ate. Whenever he came to Mumbai he stayed at Juhu with a Gujarati family which was primarily into the shipping business. He used to, every morning, drink a full glass of bitter karela juice. And he did not drink cow's milk, he drank goat's milk. I came very close to Gandhi in the home of the shipping folks. He used to

Two days ago Preity Zinta cockily quipped on Twitter: “#bangbang be4 Bang Bang ! Had2 throw a guy out of the Theater as he refused 2stand up4 our National Anthem! Can u believe it?Now movie time.” Just a few months ago, a group of Kerala students

Instead, she took down that first message and posted this one: “For the record it was not me but the people in the theater who asked him to leave. I seconded it so there would be no trouble.” Then she took this one down too. Right or wrong, stand up for your decisions, Preity.

But he did this in India, a land where everyone knows not to take Rahul seriously. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the other hand, has goofed up names of countries, people and pop references internationally since he took office. First he visited Bhutan and called it Nepal. BMC tightens tendering system

T

o introduce better transparency in its e-tendering system, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will provide each of its contractors with a ‘direct identification number’ which will allow the contractors to submit

bills directly on an online system, starting from November 1. The system will then be introduced to all the departments by the end of this year. The civic body has introduced the system to restrict the involvement of low-ranking civic officials with the contractors.

CR-GM asks IRCTC to consider students’ case on humane grounds By Vishnudas Sheshrao

C

entral Railway General Manger Brig S.K. Sood on Thursday requested his counterparts in the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to consider on humanitarian grounds the case of the students whose tickets are seized by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) as these were booked by unauthorised agents through fraudulent means. Two weeks ago, seven citybased convent schools had

FRAUD TICKETS CASE booked railway tickets for 550 students for a trip to destinations like Goa, Mangalore, Ernakulam and few places in Gujarat. They had booked these tickets through some unauthorised agents who had used a fraudulent software that generated hundreds of PNRs in minutes. Officials identified the schools (Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Parsi School, Convent of Jesus and Mary School, Fort; Don Bosco High School Borivli; SM Shetty School, Borivli) and negligence was noted on account of the Principal or coordinator of the re-

spective school for the mess as they approached the unauthorised agents. Sood in his capacity as General Manger of Central Railway requested the IRCTC authorities to consider the case of school-going children on humanitarian grounds. A Central Railway official said, “The GM has justified that the students are a vulnerable group. They had already booked the dates with hotels, educational institutes and museums. It would lead to heavy losses for the students and mental trauma. Besides, students had no stake in it, the mistake was committed by the school authorities.” Railway authorities have thus instructed the school authorities to buy fresh waiting list tickets since the previous tickets are in the custody of the RPF and the matter is sub judice. Students will get authority to board the train with fresh waiting list tickets and they will get the berths previously reserved for them. Railway officials said that they will help the school to buy waiting list tickets. The IRCTC also gave a positive nod since the students are getting fresh tickets. The refund of the previous tickets will be given after the court order.

Three fall off local near Mumbra; one dead By Vishnudas Sheshrao

T

hree people on Thursday morning fell off running local trains at different locations between Mumbra and Kalwa stations on the central line of the suburban railway network in a span of two hours. One of the victims succumbed to injuries and two are still struggling in the hospital. Th first incident took place at 9.20 am at Kalwa station after which the victim was rushed to a local hospital. Police identified the victim as Mehashan Shaikh (25), a resident of Thane. He is currently admitted in Shivaji hospital, Thane. The doctor

said that he is stable and responding to treatment. The second incident was reported between Mumbra and Kalwa at 9.35am where a passenger identified as Khatirjama Abdul (22), a resident of Govandi, fell off a local train. Passengers and local police rushed him to Shivaji hospital and doctors say he is stable. In the third incident, a passenger fell down from a local train at 11.30 am between Mumbra and Kalwa. He was rushed to the civil hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. The police identified the victim as Shivaji Waghmare (25), a resident of Thane.

“We will be providing individual login id's to the contractors through which they can generate their bills. It will help us to keep an eye on the work undertaken and the time in which it is completed,” said a senior civic official. “We will also restrict the

number of lower rank officials in this system.” At present there are 23 officials under the scanner for scams. The final investigation report is expected to be submitted to the commissioner by October 15. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

E-tendering scams The current e-tendering system was replaced by the previous Civil Works Contracts (CWC) in 2012 with the aim of curbing corruption. The CWC covered day-to-day repair works for roads and other issues carried out through corporators' funds. But alleging large-scale nexus, the corporators had demanded for a test auditor and vigilance officer’s (TAVO) report which found that civic engineers had manipulated the system to favour certain contractors. As reported in the ADC on September 24, the BMC has suspended nine engineers and blacklisted 40 companies in connection with the manipulation.

he high profile Salman Khan 2002 hit-and-run case witnessed another development on Thursday as two witnesses gave their statements in the packed courtroom of Sessions Judge D W Deshpande. The first witness, Kalpesh Verma, who was the parking assistant in the J W Marriot hotel told the court that on the night of the incident the actor along with his bodyguard and Kamaal Khan came to the Juhu hotel.

Salman Khan The witness informed the court that the actor also gave him a tip of Rs 500. On September 28, 2002, a Landcruiser ran over the pavement near a bakery in

Bandra, which resulted in the death of one pavement dweller and injury to four others. Allegedly Salman Khan was driving the vehicle. Khan is facing the charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. It attracts a 10-year prison term. While cross-examining, advocate Shrikant Shivade who is representing the actor asked the witness about the exact position where Kamaal Khan was seated in the vehicle. To this the witness said that Kamaal Khan was sitting in the backseat on the left side and also he was behind Salman Khan. Sivade informed the court that Kalpesh Verma was used as a subsidiary witness as Yogesh Kadam, who parked the actor's car in the hotel did

not give his statement. Also, Verma did not mention the 'in and out' time and other crucial details. On these grounds he should not be considered present at the place at that time, Sivade added. The second witness was Amin Sheikh, who used to work at the bakery at the time of the incident. He said that on that night he saw that a white vehicle had rammed into the pavement. He heard people saying 'Salman Khan bahaar aao (Salman Khan, come out)'. The witness said that he was not sure whether he saw the actor or not. The case was resumed after the missing statements of the witnesses and case diaries were traced. The case was adjourned till November 5.

he Sessions Court on Thursday granted Siraj Khan interim protection till October 14. Siraj, who is accused of violating the Foreigners Act for not having valid documents to stay in India, is married to an Indian woman and has three children. The man from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) who came to India when he was 10 years old was released by the RAK Marg police without release orders on October 3. In his final arguments, defence advocate Yusuf Khan informed the court that Siraj, who was granted a bail in 2009, has never violated any condition of the bail. “The RAK Marg police purposely

released him without release orders so they could frame a false case against Siraj, which they did on the very next day by announcing that he was absconding,” said Khan. “There is no need of custodial interrogation as he will cooperate with the investigation.” After producing an affidavit mentioning the High Court's (HC) order asking Siraj to be present at the RAK Marg police station every morning between 7 am to 8 am from October 10, Khan assured the court that Siraj will abide by the HC's order. Earlier on Wednesday, the Sessions Court Judge, U B Shukla said that the court doesn't want to pass a conflicting order which is why a copy of the HC's order or an affidavit has to be produced. On the grounds of the affidavit filed by Siraj Khan, interim protection was granted to him.

leuths of the Navghar police in Bhayandar are on the lookout for a 27-year-old man who raped a 28-yearold woman inside a hotel room after luring her under the pretext of a job interview on Wednesday. According to the police, a complaint was registered at the Navghar police station by the woman stating that a person identified as Datta Ambadas Waghmare (27) raped her inside the room of a hotel in the Indralok area of Bhayandar (E) on Wednesday evening. Initial investiga-

tions into the case revealed that the woman met Waghmare, around two months ago through a common contact. Waghmare befriended the woman by promising his help in getting her a job as a Home Guard. However, under the pretext of a job interview, Waghmare escorted her to a hotel room where he allegedly raped her. “A resident of Vile-Parle, the accused has gone into hiding after committing the crime. 25-year-old housewife from Bhayandar mustered courage to get her hubby behind bars for capturing their intimate bed scenes on the webcam of his laptop. The police arrested the man on the basis of a complaint filed by his wife alleging that the video was shot without her knowledge and that it had breached her privacy. According to the police, the accused has been identified as Raj Kesarparsad Gaud (27), a resident of Geeta Nagar in Bhayandar (East). In her complaint to the police, the woman stated that she got the shock of her life after stumbling upon some footage stored in her husband’s personal laptop showing their intimate bed scenes apparently shot on the webcam of the gadget. Following the complaint, the police immediately seized the laptop and arrested Gaud. Investigations revealed that after a brief courtship, the couple entered into a registered marriage a few months ago. However, it has been revealed that Gaud not only got involved in filming intimate acts, but also dumped his wife to marry another woman, police said.

This poll drive ad of the BJP ('Are Kuthe Neun Thevlay Maharashtra Maaza') will be modified and relaunched shortly. style and theme of its election campaign. The rethink according to sources has been necessitated after the advertisement which dwelt on the misrule of the Congress-NCP regime became a subject of parody on social media platforms. Sources disclosed that the advertisement will be modified in its style and theme and relaunched

again shortly. The BJP had launched the advertisement which focused on themes like water supply, unemployment, farmers suicides, corruption and other issues. The advertisement had been devised by noted adman Piyush Pandey. His earlier advertisement campaign for the BJP during the May 2014 Lok Sabha campaign of 'Aache Din Aanewale Hain' had become the talk of the town, though it too was parodied on the social media. However, a section of the party feels that modifying the advertisement campaign now could send a wrong signal. Some partymen felt that the advertisement campaign appeared more negative in content. Hence the new advertisement campaign will now focus on the positive election campaign. Moreover, the rethink has been necessitated as the BJP has become the target of attacks from its political rivals after it split its alliance with the Shiv Sena. The party now has barely three days in which it has to relaunch the advertisement campaign. As per the election schedule, campaigning will end on the evening of October 13, 48 hours before the poll day on October 15.

and Maharashtra during the Congress-NCP rule. Lashing out at Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar, he questioned the sudden love for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the time of elections. He wanted to know as to why the Congress-NCP led government could not construct the grand memorials for Shivaji Maharaj and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in Mumbai. He said that he wanted to bring water and sewage treatment plants on public partnership mode in Mumbai and give fillip to tourism sector and create jobs for youth. Modi stated that Mumbai does figure in his scheme of developing 500 cities in the country into smart cities. The prime minister wanted to know as to why Mumbai could not be-

come the financial capital of the world and added that he wanted to make the city the 'skill capital' of the country. Earlier, addressing an election rally at Baramati he added that elections may come and go, governments may come and go, but one must not politicise such issues. Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the opposition not to use words that will discourage the soldiers fighting on the border. He further added that this was not the time for political blame game. The prime minister stated that the country never tried to politicise 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. He added that the country has responded with courage to the ceasefire violations. prashant.hamine@afternoondc.in

Sonia makes heated speech By A Special Correspondent

n her first meeting in the state to campaign for the Assembly elections, Congress president Sonia Gandhi made a scathing attack on the BJP. She appealed to voters in the state not to be swayed by the party which spreads hatred in society. The Congress president also said BJP and Shiv Sena might have parted ways prior to the election but in reality they are one and they will join hands for power. Sonia Gandhi was addressing a rally at Kolhapur yesterday. She said, “The real aim of the BJP is to spread hatred in society. Opportunist parties like BJP and Shiv Sena can do anything for power. They may look separate but in reality they are one. The Narendra Modi government is carrying forward schemes of the erstwhile UPA government despite the BJP having ridiculed them earlier. They ridiculed schemes of the Congress government but now are going ahead with the same schemes.” Attacking Modi over his claim about the 'Gujarat model of development', she said, “Our opponents say they will take Maharashtra ahead of Gujarat. When the polls come, BJP say big things but the reality is different. During the Lok Sabha polls, they made tall promises. What happened to their promise of reducing inflation in 100 days? What happened?” The Congress president also questioned the Modi government over its handling of the escalating cease-

fire violations by Pakistan which have resulted in civilian casualties notwithstanding the government's claim that it was responding titfor-tat to the aggression. “They had spoken of giving a befitting reply to Pakistan. What happened?” she asked. Sonia Gandhi also slammed Modi for invoking the Maratha king Shivaji at his election rallies. “They invoke Shivaji Maharaj during

the elections but when our government planned a grand statue of Shivaji in the Arabian Sea, they opposed it,” she pointed out. “Maharashtra had progressed under the Congress which fought for women, farmers and the backward classes. We made laws to empower them. In future too, we are committed to progress for all,” she clarified.

Uddhav invited Raj to become an ally

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2014

I

n a sensational disclosure yesterday Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray claimed that his estranged cousin Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray had called him and talked to him about forming an alliance. Speaking to a television news channel yesterday the MNS president said that soon after the SenaBJP alliance broke on September 26, the Sena president had called him to narrate how he had been betrayed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership. This claim has once again set the rumour mills in motion about a possible post-poll alliance between the two parties. Reacting to the development, senior Sena Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut remarked that the stance taken by the MNS president was in the interest of the state. He added that for the betterment

Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray and self-respect of the state, all likeminded parties need to come together. Raut however added that the issue will be discussed after the elections are over. It may be recalled that Uddhav Thackeray had even sent his son Aditya to meet the MNS president at the latter's Krishna Kunj residence. The MNS president in his televised interview said, “Uddhav did call me and talked to me on the alliance. Let us talk

on the polls.” Raj Thackeray stated that Uddhav Thackeray had listed three issues – that the two parties should not attack each other during their election campaign, on fielding candidates and about a post-poll alliance. He added that Balasaheb Dangat had told him (Raj) that Uddhav wanted to talk to him. After the initial talk, the MNS president said that he had deputed his party MLAs Bala Nandgaonkar and Nitin Sardesai to hold talks with the Sena. The Sena too had deputed its Rajya Sabha MP Anil Desai and another leader to hold talks. But after that, repeated calls went unanswered and they decided to give up on the alliance talks. Raj Thackeray further stated that as the selected candidates made a beeline for his party office to seek party tickets, and with barely a day left to file nomination papers, he asked Bala Nandgaonkar to issue the AB forms to the candidates.

There is no question of cheating as all the required permissions and NOCs were obtained and the same was granted by BMC and the election commission.” He further added, “Other political parties are behind this, intending to malign the image of Ram Kadam, as he is doing

good work in Ghatkopar. Some anti-social elements and BMC officers along with an opposite party candidate have filed this false FIR.” Chate also mentioned that the Ram Kadam section 420 is not applicable as there has been no cheating. He also said that custodial interrogation in this case is not required and completed his submission requesting for interim bail. Kadam was arrested with two of his

party workers by Ghatkopar police on October 6. Kadam was accused of using a religious place for political purpose. The BJP candidate had set up a pandal outside the temple and used it for campaigning for the upcoming Assembly elections. He was charged under cheating and common intent under the Indian Penal Code, in addition to sections 3 (misuse of religious place) and 7 (punishment for misuse) of the Religious Institutions (Prevention of Misuse) Act. Along with section 123 (3) of Representation of the People Act, which specifically means the appeal by a candidate to vote or refrain from voting for any any person on the ground of his or her religion.

Mira-Bhayandar Assembly seat: Religion politics takes centre-stage Fight between NCP and BJP in four-corner battle

By Suresh Golani

W

ith both the alliances snapping their ties at the eleventh hour, the strength of all four major political parties including the NCP, Congress, BJP and Shiv Sena, has considerably reduced in the Mira-Bhayandar Assembly segment. This has apparently prompted candidates to rely largely on caste, community and religion cards in the run up to the Assembly polls scheduled on October 15. Although this Assembly seat is headed towards a multi-pronged battle, the main fight is among sitting Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator Gilbert Mendonca, BJP’s Narendra Mehta and Yakub Qureshi (Congress). On the other hand, Shiv Sena’s Prabhakar Mhatre is yet to gather steam in his campaign. Political observers believe that in the 2009 polls, it was the presence of the MNS candidate which

Gilbert Mendonca (NCP), Narendra Mehta (BJP) engineered an evident split in the saffron alliance votes paving a virtual cakewalk for Mendonca who trounced his BJP rival by a margin of 10,604 votes. While Mendonca garnered 62,013, Mehta stood second with 51,409, followed by 27,220 votes pocketed by MNS candidate Chandrakant Vaity. With an addition of 40,000 new voters, the total electoral strength of the Mira Bhayandar Assembly segment currently stands at

3.64 lakh. Irrespective of his party status, Mendonca has not only managed to establish his supremacy on the local selfgoverning body since the gram panchayat regime, but has also maintained a strong clout over this constituency which is a perfect blend of urban, rural and coastal areas. Even as the break-up of both the alliances has turned the battle into an unpredictable one, the electoral arithmetic of the BJP has gone for a toss as it was largely relying on the combined saffron strength on the virtue of its ties with the Shiv Sena. On the other hand, the local NCP and Congress leadership have always been at loggerheads not missing a single opportunity to spew venom against each other. Moreover by fielding Mendonca’s bête noire Yakub Qureshi, the Congress party has exposed its intent of extracting revenge for the humiliation by the local NCP leadership.

trong allegations, exchange of angry words are being made by the leaders of four political parties who are in the Maharashtra poll fray. The Congress is training its guns mainly on the BJP. Rahul Gandhi has come from Delhi to campaign for his party. His attacks are mainly against the BJP. While the leader takes on the BJP, other Congress leaders are tearing into the NCP which was their ally in the DF government. Both the Congress and the NCP are bringing forth allegations which they had hidden and not made public while in power. The NCP is going all out for its former ally. It minces no words: it becomes clear now that while in power, there was no love lost between the two parties. They had no go but to put up with their ally due to “power compulsions”. Both the Congress and the NCP leaders are also attacking the Shiv Sena. The Shiv Sena itself is campaigning against the Congress and the NCP, but also against its former ally — the BJP. Its chief Uddhav Thackeray is not even sparing Narendra Modi: He says the BJP has backstabbed him. The BJP accuses the Congress and the NCP of corruption and disproportionate assets. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing rallies in Maharashtra has said that out of respect for Balasaheb Thackeray, he would not criticise the Shiv Sena. It all boils down to this. There could be a hung house and the chances are if they can muster the numbers, the old allies will come together again and form the government.

O China's President Xi Jinping has returned home after signing several significant pacts of considerable importance. What has the Indian media got to say about the visit in all its variety? Let us start with The New Indian Express (Sept. 18). It said that despite the inking of those pacts "trust deficit continues to plague India-China relations. Hours before President Xi arrived in India there were signs of aggressive gestures from Beijing. China expressed its displeasure over the India-Vietnam offshore oil exploration agreement. And, said the paper, about the same time there was a standoff in Dechok area of Ladakh with Chinese nomads pitching tents inside Indian territory with the help of the Chinese army. Said the paper: "The Modi government should clear that improvements with China will depend on how quickly China stops provocations on the border and dumping goods in India". It added: "The relationship should be based on equality and reciprocity... Our trade deficit is growing and China must give Indian companies a better access to its market. China and India can be powerful force to counter American influence in Asia".

Border troubles The Economic Times (Sept. 20) took another view of border troubles. It said "disputes about India-China border are fundamentally meaningless". Those borders, said the paper were drawn up in a hurry when the British left India. And to that it added: "Today both India and China are sovereign states with ambitions of becoming super powers in their own right. To get there we must recognise that our present borders are not sacrosanct but drawn up by a colonial power... This government should aim to finish the task without acrimony. Minus the passion that television anchors bring to bear on barren wasteland, the border is the least of our problems". The DNA (Sept. 19) also was thinking out of the box. Recounting all the positive elements exhibited in signing several agreements, the paper said Xi brings in the quiet efficiency of a CEO while Modi plays the role of a charismatic and popular leader. "Despite the differences in their profile" said the paper "both Modi and Xi are propelling the two countries towards greater economic activity and cooperation. It would be wrong, then, to see the Modi-Xi encounter through political lens and count the brownie points that Modi scored in raising the border issue. China is viewing India more seriously than ever. And it would be naive to believe that China is keen to tear India away from either Japan or the US." The Times of India (Sept. 19) took a positive approach too, noting that "both sides didn't

allow irritants to dampen enhanced economic cooperation" and signed "a plethora of bilateral agreements" which will serve to build mutual confidence. "New Delhi" said the paper, "needs Chinese investments to mitigate its huge trade deficit with Beijing". Besides, the paper added "the more investment China puts in India's economic growth, the less likely that it will resort to aggressive tactics. New Delhi should continue to pursue economic and cultural ties with Beijing". In conclusion, the paper said: "While it (India) must make all-out efforts to settle the border dispute, it must also be prepared to resist any Chinese blandishments that are in-

MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath tended to muscle it out of Southeast Asia". In a separate editorial (Sept. 22) the paper said that on the border issue "it is clear that Beijing wishes to keep New Delhi unsettled". Said the paper: "It is not at all in a hurry to play dentist and relieve New Delhi's toothache... At present the Chinese economy is not only four to five times bigger than the Indian economy, it is also growing faster than ours. India is but a vanishing speck in China's rear-view mirror. To induce greater Chinese respect for Indian sensitivities, Modi must reverse this. Like charity, foreign policy success begins at home". Deccan Herald (Sept. 18) noted that President Pranab Mukherjee's visit to Vietnam has "ruffled feathers in China" and could cast a shadow on President Xi's trip to India. This, said the paper need not be the case if China would do a bit of introspection about its own activity in the region. It said: "it is after all engaged in massive infrastructure building in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). In the circumstances, its objections to India's oil exploration with Vietnam in waters Beijing lays claim too seems rather hypocritical. Allowing India's friendship with Vietnam to impinge negatively on its relations with Delhi would therefore reflect China's double-standards, immaturity, even lack of confidence. Likewise, said the paper, India must not be rattled by Xi's visit to the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

China's influence in India's neigbourhood is mounting but to counter this, India must build stronger bonds with its neighbours..."

Foreign investments The Hindustan Times (Sept. 19) spoke about how foreign investments will materialise only if state governments overhaul regulatory practice. Mr. Modi, said the paper, "has to ensure that state governments, including those ruled by opposition parties buy into his vision of investment-led growth. It said: "Vested interests of all hues who will stand to lose control over their fiefs -- including local satraps, environmentalists, social activists and trade unions -- will find reasons to thwart his plans of making India an easier place to do business in. But the prime minister must take the bull by the horns and push hard to sell his vision to the states. Only then can promised investments, general jobs, prosperity and attract even more investments". The Asian Age (Sept. 20) felt it would be wise on India's part to be more accommodative on the boundary issue. India, it said "could also politically gear itself for a give-and-take of territory to straighten out the Line of Actual Control to mutual satisfaction. If other neighbours of China have sorted out demarcation difficulties "that were left over from history' with China, why, asked the paper "should India table a separate category?" The official pledge of US $4 billion a year for five years for infrastructure and manufacturing in India may not be a huge sum, but, said the paper India "should go for it", even while making sure that India is not denied investments in China and its trade imbalance with the northern neighbour "is righted".

THE Karnataka court rejecting J Jayalalithaa's bail is landmark in a country where corruption has become routine. Jayalalithaa is the first sitting CM to be convicted and this itself is a signal that power cannot protect forever. It is infuriating for us as tax payers that government officials and employees, already paid to do their jobs, demand additional under-the table payments. The alternative for us is an endless wait and repeated trips to the office in question. Jayalalithaa's case, of course, is an example of money-gathering at the highest level. The few hundreds that the average citizens see crossing palms can't hold a candle to the Rs 66 crore in this case. The chief obstacle for petitioners is that cases take inordinately long to be settled, and this sometimes deters people from seeking justice at all. Hopefully though, Justice Johan D'Cunha's judgement will encourage more courts to decide fearlessly in cases of corruption. — Bhagwan Thadani, Pune

His mind is clearly not in the game and it will be good for him and his team if he continues with his TV commercials. Mohit Sharma gave away 61 runs in 9 overs and did not take any wicket. It is intriguing why he was preferred to Umesh Yadav. And as for the brilliant Fletcher as said by Ravi Shastri, a lot has already been said about him by many. He is totally dumb and dull and nothing registers on his face, particularly the team's loss. He is clearly a misfit as a coach.

Discrimination in KBC After watching all the episodes of the KBC during the past three years, I have come to the following conclusion: only those unfortunate souls from villages, who are undergoing severe financial crunch, facing serious health problems, heavily laden with debt or encountering family discord, can hope to compete for and hit the coveted hot seat. Other normal beings, though eligible, are strictly kept out of consideration. The organisers should at least write this in their terms and condition as the only eligibility criterion so that those who do not fall in these categories would not take the trouble of registering for the show. Also though subscribers of BSNL landline phones are allowed to register, their counterparts from MTNL are barred from doing so. This is a clear cut case of discrimination. — Jorhat Singh, Kandivali

THE Karnataka HC has rejected Jayalalithaa's bail petition. Even though Bhavani Singh, the government lawyer, did not oppose bail and mentioned conditional bail, the judge rejected the bail petition. Heavens would not have fallen if Jayalalithaa had been released on bail. The Karnataka HC should take total responsibility for any consequences in Tamil Nadu. It is time someone from the Centre took notice and does something before the matter goes out of hand. The AIADMK should also accept realities and accept that Jayalalithaa has to come out only through a legal process and no amount of dharnas, protests and other form of support will do. They should desist from all forms of protest to avoid inconveniences to the public. The learned judge chose to act as per his whims rather than focussing on the legal aspects involved. THE 'Big Billion Day' sale was a big gimmick to fool customers. These people are into business, not charity. Is it really possible to sell products at Re 1 or at a 90 per cent discount to its cost price? Most products had the 'sold out' tag and many people either failed to log in or complete their transactions. These are marketing gimmicks and such cheap products at 10 per cent the cost could also be substandard, with expired items sold at the price of scrap. I wonder how they manipulate excise duty as some goods offered in the online sale do not cover excise duty amount as well. This is not the way these people should be treating their loyal clientele. Government should order an enquiry into the whole episode so that business ethics are not compromised and people are not fooled in the name of heavy discounts. — S N Kabra, Goregaon

Extra ST buses for Diwali season By A Staff Reporter

T

he Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has announced that it will run 17,550 additional buses for the Diwali season. That will be an addition of 2,690 buses to last year's Diwali season buses. These will be available in various regions across Maharashtra. MSRTC will start the additional bus services from October 16 to November 9. There will be 3,250 buses available in the Mumbai region which would include

Palghar, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Thane and Raigad. There will be 4,700 extra buses in the Aurangabad region, 875 buses in the Amravati region, 775 buses in the Nagpur region, 4,575 buses in the Pune region and 3,375 buses in the Nashik region. Considering the huge demand for buses in the Pune region, 1,985 additional buses will run from various crucial bus stations in Pune from October 19 to 22. However, if there is further demand from travellers, the MSRTC is open to considering it.

Kutch weavers in Mumbai By A Staff Reporter

T

he first night the weavers of Bagalkot left their village, a panicked call was placed to Kutch. There was trouble with their train tickets and they couldn't speak Hindi with the ticket conductor. They were suddenly facing the world of the unknown, outside their own villages and towns. Seven months later, these brave young weavers are presenting collection of Ilkal saris to the city of Mumbai. Initiated by Somaiya Kala Vidya, an institute for artisans based in Kutch, founded by

the Somaiya Trust, the project demonstrates the effective and efficient power of design in sustaining traditions with an artisan-to-artisan approach. Carrying their techniques to the next phase, weavers of Kutch were the designers and mentors for the less exposed weavers from Bagalkot district of Karnataka. The result, an exhibition held at Artisans' will showcase all new natural fibre saris, dupattas, shawls and stoles, inspired by Ilkal saris, handwoven by seven Bagalkot and Bhujodi weavers, till Saturday, Oct 11. Hand weavers of Bagalkot are imperiled. Their wellloved Ilkal saris today face severe competition from power loom versions. Handloom wages are meagre. Many weavers have left their profession to work in granite quarries. Meanwhile, jacquard looms were introduced to make copies of Varanasi saris, a solution that is costly in terms of equipment and skill development, and devastating for the cultural heritage of Ilkal sari weaving. Hand weavers of Bhujodi, Kutch, have a 50-year history of innovating within their traditions for new markets. Since 2006, 23 weavers have graduated from a year-long design programme pioneered by Kala RakshaVidhyalaya. These weavers have become remarkably successful in reaching high-end markets in India and abroad, and adept at articulating and presenting their work. Somaiya Kala Vidya paired these artisans for a quick, live demonstration of sustainability through design. There were challenges. The looms were no longer geared to cotton, the weavers had used synthetic yarn for so long that they did not understand the properties of cotton, and sources for appropriate materials and colours had to be found. Seeking solutions in Karnataka villages, the weaving partners bonded. "We explored," Chamanbhai related. "I saw Jayantibhai doing research, asking questions about tradition. We didn't know we had so many different skills!" Elder Bagalkot weavers were so happy that cotton had returned, that they invited the Bhujodi team to dinner.

Décor tiPs If you’re not sure how to incorporate traditional elements in your décor, Munawar Sharifi, founder of The Design Company, has some great tips for you. But, before you check out his tips or buy new décor items, read what he has to say about checking for what you might have at home. He tells us, “We usually have several items at home that can add aesthetic value to our décor. These things are often ignored and usually end up in cabinets. One can use them to accessorise their home and add festive cheer.” Apart from that, he gives us these tips: n Traditional fabrics work best as dining table covers, bedspreads and cushion covers. You can also use them as runners to incorporate a traditional element into your décor. n Opt for warm colours with a hint of dull gold/ bronze while choosing curtains. If you have light coloured curtains, draping a bright bandhini sari around them can give them a festive look. Curtains in dull gold/ bronze and reds can lend a the festive vibe to your living room n Put a bowl of water with flower petals and floating candles and use tea lights on your dining table for a Diwali touch. n To brighten up dull areas, you can take strings of fairy lights and put them inside transparent glass bowls. n Vintage mirrors not only add a traditional touch, they can also make smaller spaces look bigger. They will also lend your home a royal look. n Remember that adding too many décor pieces can make your house look cluttered and gaudy. That being said, don’t be extra cautious; play around with elements in your home and accessorise them to add a personal touch to it and make it even more special. n Ensure that you avoid permanent damage to your interiors while experimenting. Painting the walls or furniture can go wrong at times and should be left to experts. Also, make sure inflammable items such as candles are kept out of children’s reach.

Bartending expertise

Yamini Walia talks to Ondrej Pospichal about his bartending style and his trip to India as part of the Grey Goose Beyond the Bar programme n Tell us about your association with the Grey Goose Beyond the Bar programme? This fantastic programme, which Grey Goose has designed, is in its second year and I am extremely happy to be the face of this year. Sharing knowledge and expertise with the Indian bar industry is a very fulfilling experience. n Is this your first trip to India? What are you looking forward to the most? Yes, this is my first time. The Grey Goose Beyond the Bar programme took place in three cities (New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore) and I was extremely excited to try the local food and see the craft and creativity that defines the bars. n Are there any notable differences between the bar industry in India and abroad? Of course there are. These days, we tend to look for exotic drinks and because of social media and its worldwide reach, we forget what our own country has to offer. My aim this year was to show local bartenders what is literally under their nose and how they can use it! n In terms of your career, what would you say has been your

>> Ondrej Pospichal preparing some delectable cocktails at the Grey Goose Beyond the Bar programme

biggest achievement? My biggest achievement is the fact that I succeeded in London at the epicentre of the cocktail culture. n How would you define your bartending style? What do you think sets you apart from the rest? My style is simple, straightforward and incorporates Asian influences. I work with the best ingredients and with local and seasonal produce. What sets me apart is the fact that bartending is not only about creating cocktails, but also tending to the bar, which includes attending to several things even before you open the door. n What suggestions/ tips would you like to give to aspiring bartenders? I would like aspiring bartenders to study and work on themselves in their free time and be determined. More so, they need to stay focused, be humble and help others. n What are your future plans? London is great, but I love travelling, motivating people and helping them grow. So, any type of role in future is possible, especially in Asia, primarily Japan.

atnadeep Adivrekar, a Mumbai-based artist, has had his share of accomplishments in the art world. He has been the recipient of several prestigious awards such as The Governor’s Prize, The Harmony Award for Best Emerging Artist and the BendreHussain Scholarship. After a ten-year hiatus, Ratnadeep is now showcasing his artwork in Mumbai in an exhibition titled Parallax Views. Thirteen pieces of artwork are a part of this show and the exhibit includes video installations, oil paintings and paper work. You can expect a literal and metaphorical representation of the term parallax — a displacement or difference in the apparent position of an object, when viewed along two different lines of sight. Ratnadeep’s artwork draws influences from the history of

art, politics, science and philosophy and presents a fair view of life from an artist’s eyes, with visual inspiration from the cultures of Mumbai and Berlin (the two cities that Ratnadeep has spent the most time in). Speaking about his exhibition, Ratnadeep tells us, “While looking at and absorbing different cultures, I realised that no way of seeing the world can be taken as definitively true; but that does not necessarily mean that all perspectives are equally valid, such as the concept of Anekantavada.” When Up to October 24 Where Tao Art Gallery, 165, The View, Dr. Annie Besant Road, Worli Contact 24918585

French brand, Perron Rigot, has introduced a range of waxing products called Cirépil. Yamini Walia visited the Taj salon at The Taj Mahal Palace, to experience this new waxing technique

I

f you wince a little whenever you read the word ‘waxing’, we don’t blame you. The often painful and always troublesome technique has driven both men and women crazy for years. Good waxing salons are almost as hard to find as good wax, so we were very interested when we heard about Perron Rigot. Imagine a wax that doesn’t use wax strips, but still manages to pluck all the hair off your body! The innovative waxing technique, introduced for the first time in India, is available under the label, Cirépil. Perron Rigot is owned by the Thalgo group and is know for delivering the best waxing products to salons and spas across Europe and USA. So, when I got the opportunity to try the wax out, I couldn’t resist it. Cirépil offers different types of waxes, each designed for separate areas. So, there is a specific wax for your face, another one for your underarms and a different one for your stomach or back. I was told that the beauty experts at the salon were given special training to use this wax. I visited Taj salon at The Taj Mahal Palace for the treatment and it’s safe to say I was left extremely impressed. The product is specifically designed for sensitive areas, so it was a godsend for my super sensitive skin. I

opted for the full wax, which included legs, arms and underarms. The process of the waxing treatment is pretty interesting. My waxing expert applied a solution on my skin before layering on the wax, which was heated in a regular wax heater. However, it was the application that surprised me. It works as a peel-off wax, so it was

applied in a circular motion to a particular area, after which it was peeled off. The wax took less than two seconds to dry, but it needed to be applied in at least three coats, so that it peeled off properly. The wax doesn’t hurt at all, but you might occasionally experience a burning sensation. However, the sensation doesn’t last for long, so you don’t need to panic. The wax’s USP is that it fulfils every woman’s dream — it’s a completely painless process! Since peeling it off takes time, it took me around an hour and a half to get only my arms and legs waxed. So, make sure you have ample time in your hand to try out this treatment. The end result, however, was worth the time spent at the salon, as it left my skin glowing. It also did a much better job than normal wax does, reducing my in-grown hair by a large extent. I was so happy with my experience that I’ve already started recommending it to everyone I know. I recommend spending the time and the money to try it out. disappointment >> The décor at Aqaba doesn’t give off a Mediterranean vibe which is slightly disappointing

awesome aqaba this mediterranean restaurant serves some delicious food and although the ambiance is lacklustre, the food and drink make for a good dining experience, says shirley mistry

A

sprawling 3,000 square feet area is home to Aqaba, a sight for sore eyes, smack in the middle of a busy, crowded commercial complex. The space is open, with high ceilings and an inviting lawn, but in terms of décor, it does nothing to invoke a Mediterranean vibe. A few colourful cushions and artificial trees >> The Chicken Shawarma was among scattered over the restaurant are all you our favourites off the night will get, but this is where the disappointment ends, because the food buds. The spanakopita was our favourite, with the flaky crust and well-spiced filling that follows, is delightful. The one thing that impressed me is that despite such an making for an excellent appetiser. We paired the platter with two drinks — Aja open floor plan, they haven’t crammed tables together. So, rest assured that while (`250) and Melon Bowl (`525). With the intense flavours stop at appetisers. We tried samplers of the Spinach and Cheese stuffed Paneer of this warming soup still lingering, we kebabs (`475) which were nothing ordered a mezze platter (`825 for spectacular and followed it up with vegetarian and `925 for non vegetarian). You can choose six items to make up your Iskander Kebab (`700), which was served with a spicy, gravy like sauce. The kebab is platter and we opted for the Spanakopita (a spinach and feta pie), Shish Touk, traditionally a massive chunk of meat on Hummus Ghunam (hummus with bits of the bone, but at Aqaba, they flake it, spiced lamb), Lamb Kibbeh, and Fried season it some more and serve it with Calamari. The platter is accompanied by onion rings and pickles. If you do order piping hot, melt-in-the-mouth pita bread this kebab, we assure you that you’re not and an assortment of sauces. better, we tried the Chicken Shawarma (`750). Served with a pile of fries, one serving is good for two people and the flavours surpass those of any shawarma that we’ve eaten in the city. Lastly, we tried two main course dishes — the Vegetable Moussaka (`550), a layered eggplant dish that didn’t sit right with us because of the strong, overpowering, tart tomato sauce. We also tried Mansaf (`950), a meat dish in a fermented yoghurt sauce. It sounds far from appetising, but the flavours are splendid. Rich in flavour, the acidity of the fermented yoghurt pairs brilliantly with the meat and served with rice, it is a dish worth taking your time to savour. Stuffed to the absolute brim, we had to try a spot of dessert. We sampled the Baklava (`400) and the Rose Petal Ice cream (`350), both of which were extremely sweet, making it impossible for me to eat more than a bite. The food at this Mediterranean eatery is worth indulging in and the warm, attentive servers enhance the experience. The open layout helps maintain your privacy and the food is just what you need after a long week at work. What’s cooking? Wine days at sofitel Every year, Sofitel hotels across the world celebrate a 40-day wine extravaganza, where you can treat yourself to French wines, paired with an array of gastronomic delights. As part of this event, Sofitel in Bandra Kurla Complex, is currently hosting wine days at all its restaurants. You can look forward to wines from wineries such as Hugel & Fils, Bouchard, Pere Fils, William Fevre, Paul Jaboulet and Dourthe. While the experience is on at Jyran, Tuskers and Pondichery Café, we sampled the experience at their Le Bar, where we tried all the seven French wines, which were paired with progressive, Indian dishes. We tried dishes such as prawn pops, tomato fish ceviche and paneer tikka with white wine, while the chicken tikka, mini vada pavs and structured pathar ke kebab with a brilliant range of reds.

We may have been looking forward to the whites more because of the acidity and freshness that works well on a hot night, but the reds won us over at Sofitel. The Clarednelle in particular, a Bordeaux, that was paired with the lamb (pathar ke kebab), was the star of the night. The wine days at Sofitel promise a relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy a set meal and appreciate varieties of wines that you won’t easily come across otherwise. While we tried their pairing of wine with Indian dishes, we’re really looking forward to what Pondicherry Café, with its predominately French cuisine, has to offer as part of this event. It might cost a little extra, but the experience is well worth it. Where Sofitel, Bandra Kurla Complex Price `3,500 per head

Royal Flavours, located in oshiwara, claims to offer authentic Hyderabadi cuisine. so, yamini walia visited the restaurant to sample their fare

R

oyal Flavours is located in Oshiwara, opposite Oshiwara Mega Mall. Even though the location is quite central, the outlet is so small that it is difficult to spot. While the restaurant sounds impressive, the first impression itself was rather off putting. The ambience was extremely dull, the tables weren’t clean and there was water dripping from the air conditioner. Looking at the unhygienic environment, I didn’t feel like eating there. But, I took a deep breath and convinced myself to give them a chance. We began our experience by trying their famous Hyderabadi Mutton Haleem (`245), which was excellent. It is probably the best haleem that I have had in the city, so don’t miss out on it for anything in the world. Extremely rich in flavour, the haleem melted in our mouth and was absolutely delicious. Next we tried their Assorted Mixed Grill Platter (`1,399), which consisted of chicken, fish, mutton and prawns dishes. All the dishes were good, except the chicken, which was slightly undercooked. We also wanted to try the Mushroom Tikka but we were told that the restaurant was out of all the vegetarian dishes, which was rather shocking.

>> Apart from one dish, we didn’t like any of the starters at Royal Flavours Talking about Hyderabadi cuisine, how could we leave the restaurant without trying their Chicken Dum Biryani (`245). It was rich in terms of flavour and the spices coating the chicken tasted really good. But the chicken itself wasn’t melt-in-the-mouth. We also gave their desserts, Qubani Ka Meetha (`110) and Zafrani Badami Kheer (`110), a try. I don’t enjoy qubani at all, so I didn’t appreciate this terribly sweet dessert. However, my dining companion seemed to enjoy it. The badami kheer was quite average as well. The staff at the restaurant didn’t seem well-versed with the menu and the service was rather slow, as it took them around 20 minutes to serve one dish. Overall, you should only visit this place for their haleem. With a few tweaks and a lot of cleaning, Royal Flavours could be a pretty good restaurant. However, the less-than-perfect environment and lacklustre food means that it’s not worth visiting. Love for

Art If you are a connoisseur of art as well as a travel enthusiast, Yamini Walia & Sara Shah tell you about some of the best art museums across the world that should be on your bucket list

D

o you have an eye for art? Do you think you can walk past a painting without considering it as paint, that has merely been splashed on canvas? Then you should definitely check out some of these renowned art museums, each of which some of the finest art treasures in the world. Read on to find out more .

>> Hermitage museum in Russia, is home to over three million pieces of artwork

Hermitage museum

>> A day is not enough to cover The Metropolitan Museum of Art, located in New York

Founded in 1764, by Catherine the Great, the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia is an enormous museum of art and boasts of a collection with over three million pieces from across the world. It houses timeless artwork from artists such as Rembrandt, Da Vinci, Michealangelo and Reubens. Art collections span over an expansive area of six beautiful historic buildings including the Winter Palace that, in the past, served as residence of various Russian emperors.

tHe louvre museum

tHe uffizi gallery

We don’t think The Louvre or Le Louvre, as it’s called, needs an introduction, especially if you are an art enthusiast. Located in Paris, France, it tops the list of the most visited art museums in the world and is also one of the largest, with over 35,000 art pieces on display. To top it all, the museum houses one of the most famous art wonders in the world — The Mona Lisa. But it is bel ieved that the museum is so elaborate and houses so many beautiful pieces that one day is just not enough to see it all.

An absolute must-see when you’re in Florence, the Uffizi gallery houses major Renaissance artwork and showcases the work of artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Boticelli. The artwork here spans over 45 different rooms and the exhibits are displayed in chronological order. The place is almost always jam packed and you have to stand in long queues before it opens, to enter the museum. Two of the most prized possessions at the museum include The Birth of Venus by Sandro Boticelli and Filippo Lippi’s Madonna and Child.

>> Le Louvre museum in Paris, houses the famous Mona Lisa

tHe metropolitan museum of art Just when you think you have ample reason to visit the Big Apple, we give you another one. The Metropolitan Museum or The Met is one of New York City’s most prized treasures and is home to a whopping two million pieces of art, from the past as well as the present. Just like The Louvre, a single day is not enough to cover the Met, so dedicate more days to it in your travel schedule. Some of the must-see art pieces include the Marble portrait of the Emperor Caracalla, from Greek and Roman art, and the Temple of Dendur, from the Egyptian collection. >> The architecture of the Guggenheim museum in Spain, is breathtaking

museum of modern art

rijksmuseum

Located in Midtown Manhattan, this is one of the most renowned modern art museums. It houses some really influential modern art pieces such as Monet’s Water Lilies, Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and Van Gogh’s Starry Night. You can view the masterpieces through various angles, thanks to the maze glass walkways, which are a highlight as well.

This houses the largest collection of art and history in the Netherlands, with over nine lakh masterpieces. It was established in the 17th century, and exhibits pieces by influential artists such as Ruysdael, Frans Hals, Johannes Vermeer, and Rembrandt van Rijn. A lot of the artwork also dates back to the middle ages. Keep an eye out for the The Night Watch, by Rembrandt.

tHe guggenHeim Before you begin your journey through its amazing artwork, take some time to marvel at the brilliant architecture of the Guggenheim museum, located at Bilbao, Spain. The curved walls are truly a highlight. Once you have taken it all in, you can quench your thirst for art with pieces by renowned artists such as Richard Serra and as well as several local artists.

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (October 10, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose substantially on Thursday (October 09, 2014) a net 117.85 points (1.50%) and closed at the 7960 point level on hopes that the US Fed would not increase interest rates in the near furture. The market opened up with a gap at the 7886 points level and that level itself was the low of the session. It then turned into a range bound movement until 1.19 p.m. The index then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 7972 points level at 2.37 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 86 points and closed above the psychologically important 7900 points level. Sentiment was extremely bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 42 were gainers, while just 8 were losers. All the sectoral indices closed in the green. Substantial buying was witnessed in capital goods, realty, banking and power stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 10.70%. This change is moderate and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 1210 were gainers, 362 were losers and 53 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the over-sold zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI rose and crossed above the 40 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: MACD is below zero but is rising (positive if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is below the –DI line but both lines are converging (positive if it continues). The ADX is falling while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is decreasing in strength.

a weak market but with a positive bias.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 7816 points level. The next support is at the 7615 points level. Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 8138 points level. The next resistance is at the 8246 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 7940 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 7907; Support (2) = 7854; Resistance (1) = 7993; Resistance (2) = 8026. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors has formed a long white body candle on higher volumes. In fact, yesterday's candle is almost like a white body Marubozu candle. (A White Marubozu forms when the open equals the low and the close equals the high). Moreover, the body of this candle is above and outside the body of the previous candle indicating a range expansion and acceleration. This is positive and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the buy side of the market. Further, the index has crossed above its 5 day’s moving average. The index is now above its 5 and 200 day’s moving averages and both the averages are rising. Incidentally, these may be the first signs of a bottoming out pattern. A crossover by the index above the 15 days average will confirm the same. Investors are advised to adopt a wait and watch policy, until a clear reversal signal is visible.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Has crossed above its 5-day average (at 7913) Positive. Is below its 15-day average (at 7981) Negative. Is below its 25-day average (at 8030) Negative. Is above its 200-day average (at 7062) Positive.

In a run up to the new foreign trade policy (FTP), secretaries of the commerce and revenue departments will meet today to sort out the issues concerning tax incentives to boost exports and manufacturing. Issues such as further extension of interest subvention scheme and inclusion of more products in the scheme are expected to figure in the meeting of Commerce Secretary Rajeev Kher and Revenue Secretary Shaktikanta Das, sources said. "Most of the issues have already been sorted out between Commerce and Finance Ministry. Few issues which are remaining would be discussed between the secretaries. Both the ministers concerned would also meet before the release of the FTP," said a source. The new five-year Foreign Trade Policy (20014-19) expected to be announced soon seeks to boost manufacturing and exports. Faced with subdued export performance, the FTP would focus on wide range of issues including services sector shipments, standards and branding of products.

Vodafone Seeks Allocation Of Spectrum Urgently

Telecom operator Vodafone India has asked the government for immediate allocation of spectrum that it won in the February auction. The company has also sought extension of the spectrum's validity by six months from the date of allocation. "Vodafone India has formally requested the DoT and regulator TRAI for immediate allotment of the 1800MHz spectrum, which it had won in auctions. Only 7 weeks are left, when as per DoT, the presently deployed spectrum in 900 MHz is to be replaced by 900MHz won in auctions," Vodafone said in an media advisory note. Telecom companies, which won spectrum in the auction and paid for it in the first week of March, are yet to be assigned radio-wave frequencies that are used for transmitting mobile signals. Vodafone's licences for telecom services in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata are due to expire in November for which it had to buy spectrum afresh to continue operations.

Sensex had lost over 383 points in the past three sessions, recovers it in a single session By A Business Reporter

"$

100 billion investments from Japan, China and America have applied for visa. Now it is turn of the states to capitalise on the opportunity. The roads are wide open. The states which are ready can walk away with major share." These words from prime minister Narendra Modi at the inauguration of the Global Investors' Summit in Indore yesterday, coupled with a host of positive global cues resulted in a dramatic turn around on the stock markets yesterday. Snapping it's three-session losing streak, the BSE benchmark Sensex surged by 390 points to close at over one-week high on handsome gains in blue-chip stocks, led BHEL and Hindalco, as US Federal Reserve signaled that there wouldn't be immediate rate hike. Brokers said the trading senti-

ment bolstered on the release of minutes of meeting of US Federal Reserve, confirming interest rates would remain low, triggering allround buying by funds and retail investors. Globally, mixed closing in choppy trade on the other Asian markets and a higher opening of the European stocks, also influenced the sentiment, they added. The IMF's raising India's growth forecast to 5.6 per cent for 2014 from 5.4 per cent earlier. The benchmark BSE 30-share Sensex resumed in positive zone and gathered momentum to touch session's high of 26,688, before settling at 26,637; a rise of 390.49 points, or 1.49 %. This is also Previously, it had zoomed 480.92 points, or 1.81 % on September 18. The Sensex had lost over 383 points in the past three sessions. Similarly, the 50-share NSE Nifty regained 7,900 level by rising 117.85 points or 1.5 % to its highest level in four days to 7,960. Minutes from the Fed's September meeting showed policymakers cautious about rushing into rate hikes, and worried that the dollar is rising too fast. Besides, appreciating rupee which strengthened to

over two-week high to 60.96 (intraday) against the dollar and easing global crude prices which fell to two-year low, too influenced sentiments, they added. Buying was strong with all sectoral indices led by capital goods, realty, banking, power and metal ending in positive zone with gains of up to 3.01 %. In the 30-Sensex constituents, 25 ended higher led by BHEL (8.37 %), Hindalco (6.01 %) and SBI (2.84 %), while five shares ended lower led by Wipro (down 0.83 %). Sectorally, auto, bankex and consumer durables were the biggest gainers.

Business Optimism Index Rises Over 2% For Q4 2014 By A Business Reporter

T

he underlying business sentiment continues to be resilient as India Inc's optimism index for the fourth quarter of this year has registered an increase of 2% over last year, says a Dun & Bradstreet report. The Business Optimism Index (BOI), which measures the pulse of the business community, stood at 137.6 for Q4 2014, an increase of 2% as compared to Q4 2013. On quarter-on-quarter basis however, it has witnessed a marginal de-

cline, largely due to a steep fall in optimism with regard to selling prices. "Price competition in the face of subdued demand is deterring firms from raising prices even as input costs remain high. That said, the buoyant sentiment regarding volume of sales and new orders augurs well for future growth," Dun & Bradstreet India President and Managing Director Kaushal Sampat said. Based on the responses received, it was observed that four out of the six optimism indices namely -- Volume of Sales, New Orders, Net Prof-

Way Paved For Sale Of PSU Shares By A Business Reporter

P

aving the way for sale of PSU shares worth an estimated Rs 60,000 crore over three years, the government has notified rules for minimum 25% public shareholding in listed state-owned firms. To comply with these norms, over 30 listed PSUs will need to raise their public shareholding to minimum 25% by August 21, 2017, as per a notification for amendment to the Securities Contracts (Regulation) Rules. The move would help in promoting wider investor base in listed state-run companies and also provide a boost to the government's plan to raise funds from disinvestment programme. Previously, the listed PSUs were required to have at least 10% public holding, whereas the minimum public holding in nonPSU listed companies is already 25%. The non-PSUs were asked in June 2010 to attain minimum 25% public shareholding within three years. Following the expiry of this deadline in June 2013, 105 listed companies were found to be non-compliant

with these norms and necessary actions were initiated against them by regulator Sebi. "... Every listed public sector company which has public shareholding below 25%... Shall increase its public shareholding to at least 25%, within a period of three years, in the manner, as may be specified, by the Securities and Exchange Board of India," the Finance Ministry has said. The new notification would bring in uniformity among all listed entities, irrespective of their promoter being the government or private sector entities, when it comes to minimum threshold limit for nonpromoter or public holding. As per the current valuations, the dilution in promoter holding in over 30 listed PSUs would lead to the government garnering over Rs 60,000 crore through sale of shares. However, this figure might change as these share sales would take place over a long period of nearly three years. The major PSUs where public shareholding is below 25% include Coal India, SAIL, MMTC, NHPC, NMDC and SJVN, reports PTI.

its and Employee Levels have registered an increase as compared to Q4 2013. "Going forward, improvement in business confidence is contingent on addressing structural issues in areas such as coal supplies and agriculture, simplification of business and taxation rules and resumption of various stalled projects," he added. For calculating the composite BOI, each of the six parameters -net sales, net profits, selling prices, new orders, inventories and employee levels -- is assigned a weight. The parameter weights are then applied to these ratios and the results aggregated to arrive at the Composite Business Optimism Index.

How do you gauge a genius whose talent is immeasurable? How do you define a person who lives by defying norms? Rajesh V Gaur and Suneel V Gaur try to unravel the enigma that Kishore Kumar was on the occasion of his death anniversary – October 13

REMEMBERING T

here has been only one such great in the film industry, the multifaceted Kishore Kumar – a man who lived for his one love – music. The real Kishore Kumar always remained an enigma even to his own family and close friends. Abhas Kumar Ganguly better known as Kishore Kumar, nurtured dreams of following in the footsteps of his idol K L Saigal. He visited his by then famous star brother Ashok Kumar, in Mumbai frequently, in the hope that he would introduce him to K L Saigal. But destiny willed otherwise. He was forced into acting and “hated every moment of it”. 'Chalti Ka Naam Gadi' (1958), 'Jaalzaaz' (1959), 'Jhumroo' (1961), 'Naughty Boy' (1962) became successful and that managed to tie down Kishore to a busy acting

AN ENIGMA

schedule, so much so, that for a song in 'Sharaarat', Mohd Rafi had to provide playback for him. Kishore’s ambition of becoming a playback singer was no cakewalk. And then came the chance to sing ‘Marne ki duayen kyon mangu‘ for Dev Anand in 'Ziddi' (1948). His first sad song was from the film 'Kafila' (1952) – 'Who meri taraf yoon chale aa rahe hain' penned by Vrajendra Gaur and composed by Husanlal Bhagatram became a chartbuster. S D Burman, who was always

confident about the potential of Kishore, made him the voice of Dev Anand in 'Guide', 'Gambler', 'Teen Deviyaan', 'Jewel Thief' etc. Kishore Kumar was unstinting in crediting his popularity to the Burmans – father and son. It was S D Burman who made Kishore, the superstar singer of the 70s, when he chose him to sing the super-hit songs of 'Aradhana' for Rajesh Khanna. The chartblazing songs of 'Aradhana' made both, Rajesh Khanna a superstar and Kishore Kumar the number

one singer, overnight. This also marked the beginning of the end of another popular singer, Mohd Rafi. Another composer who placed great faith in Kishore was S D Burman’s son, R D Burman. His ability to mimic combined with his voice flexibility, expression and voice quality, tremendous range gave him great speed and power. R D Burman found these qualities greatly lacking in other singers. Which is why after the decline of Rajesh Khanna, music directors like R D Burman, Kalyanji Anandji and other composers were able to successfully exploit Kishore Kumar’s voice for the new superstar, Amitabh Bachchan. Rajesh Khanna always spoke with unrestrained fondness, of the manner in which Kishore so beautifully reflected his persona’s character. Rajesh would say, “We are like two lives in one body”. He could keep in step with the debonair Dev in ‘Maana janab ne pukara nahin', drench his voice in the excitement and passion of Rajesh Khanna in ‘Roop tera mastana' and clown around for Amitabh in ‘My name is Anthony Gonsalves'. There have been many clones of Rafi but none of Kishore because it is impossible to mimic a genius like him. Kishore Kumar’s eccentricities were probably his way of defending himself from a cruel, confused world through laughter and humor which were his support system. Kishore’s dislikes were telephone calls, tax problems, cigarette smoke, alcohol and the studio routine which were well-known in the film world. Like Lata Mangeshkar once said – “Kishore was a 'Sampoorna Kalakaar'” [A completea artist].

fter getting an overwhelming response in 45 countries, Hrithik Roshan-Katrina Kaif starrer 'Bang Bang' is now all set to thrill the people of Lebanon and Iraq. From the coming weekend the film will hit the theatres in the two countries, which are not traditionally considered a market for Hindi films. Till now, only 'My Name Is Khan' (2010) released officially in both the countries, while 'Boss' (2013) released in Iraq. Directed by Siddharth Anand, the film has already crossed the 100 crore mark in India.

Vedita Pratap Singh, a super model and actress, did her Bollywood debut in the film ‘Bhendi Bazaar’. She got a lot of audience attention and critical acclaim for her role in the film. hough it was being said that Salman Khan will co-own the Pune franchise in the Indian Super League (ISL) along with Wadhawan Group, the Dabangg Khan has clarified that he doesn't own any ISL team. Khan tweeted, ''I do not own any ISL team. My friends Dheeraj & Kapil Wadhawan had asked me to be their partner in FC Pune City. But due to my endorsement contracts with Suzuki and Thums Up which conflict with the League sponsors, I can't associate with FC Pune City.'' ''I wish ISL all success. By creating ISL, IMG-Reliance and Star have put in place an important building block to put Indian football on the global football map. I endorse Nita Ambani's vision in the football grassroots program and will work wholeheartedly in supporting it. The football grassroots program will shape the next generation of Indian footballers,'' he further added. Buzz has it that now Hrithik Roshan will be announced as the co-owner of FC Pune City.

‘MUMBAI 125 KMS’ 'Mumbai 125 kms' sounds like a horror film. Yes. It is a horror thriller about how a party goes wrong with a group of friends who find themselves with a broken car at the milestone of Mumbai 125 Kms and how they find themselves amidst a deadly ghost played by Veena Malik who kills all one by one in the group of friends. It’s a 3D film shot entirely with a 3D camera and it was great fun to shoot with 3D effects. How was it like working on the film? Veena Malik never mixed around or spoke much but Karanvir Bohra, Joe Debroy, and Aparna Bajpai were great fun to work with. Director Hemant Madhukar is a technical whiz and is a big name down South and has directed a super slick horror film.

The film has been in the making for a long time. Yes. The principal shooting was over but the post production with 3D effects and the horror sequences took a long time.

'Bhendi Bazaar' gave you a lot of critical acclaim. Did it help you in any way? Yes. Though it didn’t do too well at the box-office, I was noticed by the industry and I got 'Mumbai 125 Kms', because of my performance in 'Bhendi Bazaar'.

Playing the sole heroine is exciting: Lisa Haydon H

aving found acclaim for her bohemian Parisian girl act in 'Queen', model-actress Lisa Haydon is now looking forward to the release of 'The Shaukeens' in which she is making her debut as a solo heroine. The film, which has Akshay Kumar in a cameo appearance, is the 28-year-old actress' Bollywood venture after 'Aisha', 'Queen' and 'Rascals', which were both multi-starrers. "I did not expect that I would get to work with Akshay as a solo heroine in a commercial film. It has been possible only after 'Queen'. It is really exciting as an actor that I have scenes after scenes in a movie. I just loved that feeling that I was given an acting opportunity such as this," Lisa told PTI. 'The Shaukeens' is a remake of the 1982 film 'Shaukeen' directed by Basu Chatterjee. The new film stars Anupam Kher, Piyush Mishra and Annu Kapoor, who are lusting after a much younger girl, played by Lisa. "I had no hesitation being a part of the movie. Although it is a remake, the concept of our film is completely different from the original. The movie is a very clean comedy. It has a contemporary setting. "And also I got to work with three veteran and prolific actors like Anupam ji, Annu ji and Piyush ji. I could not have asked for more," said the actress, adding she has not watched the original film. 'The Shaukeens' has been directed by Abhishek Sharma of 'Tere Bin Laden' fame and produced by Akshay. It will hit theatres on November 7.

Then there was everybody’s favourite Blaze at Colaba, owned by the friendly souls (Freny Variava and Pradeep Upoor) who produced some of the early Shyam Benegal films. This one was probably lost to remodeling. Then Broadway cinema in Dadar was demolished, and some BMC rule dictated that a small cinema had to be built on the new premises, so above the fabric showroom that still stands, was constructed the small Broadway mini theatre, where the press shows were held for many years, till the owners found better uses for its prime real estate. Sunil Dutt had built a small underground Ajanta dubbing studio-cum-preview theatre, adjoining his bungalow, just as Rajendra Kumar had built Dimple next to his house in

Bandra, and the Anand brother had built Ketnav (named after Dev Anand’s banner Navketan or maybe Chetan Anand’s son Ketan). Of the lot only Ketnav still remains, the foyer decorated with posters of Vijay Anand’s films. Prakash Mehra’s Sumeet, at Juhu has been

RINGSIDE VIEW Deepa Gahlot turned into a restaurant, or so one is told. While Farhan Akhtar has set up a smart preview theatre called Lightbox, some of the old ones remain, but not as popular as they used to be. Eros mini, with its sink-in cane chairs and a lounge with fabulous antique furniture. There gloriously art deco Liberty mini – it still looks so ’50s with dragons painted on the walls and antique light fixtures. Famous Studio’s DTS-enabled

theatre with freezing air-conditioning is almost out of press show circuit now. NFDC’s basement in Worli has been jazzed up with 3D projection and all, and a lot of the English film previews are held there. There’s theYash Raj Studio’s red-upholstered swanky affair dubbed Fort Knox by journos because of the hysterical security — that ensures you can come in the out gate and vice versa. Sunny Super Sound has renovated its small preview theatre too. Fun Republic complex in Andheri has one, but not used much for press shows. There’s the Star preview theatre at one of the maze-like lanes in Andheri. Even though the one at Film City (Adlabs before it changed hands) has the best projection, it’s a grind getting there. Bandra has Grace, a small theatre tucked away on the top floor of the Gaiety-Galaxy complex, where even the lift doesn’t go – an auditorium with bold polka dots and squares on the walls, like the shirt of a '70s hero, and lights blinking around the screen, and the nose-wrinkling smell of just-sprayed air freshner. Watching a press show at a multiplex is just not the same thing anymore!

Shah Rukh to do a double role in ‘Fan’

B

ollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who will be next seen in YRF film 'Fan', will be reportedly playing a double role in the film. Sources claim that Khan will play himself as well as a commoner named Rahul (which seems to be SRK's favourite on-screen name) in the film, which is being directed by Maneesh Sharma. It is also being said that the film will have elements of humour and a series of incidents with mistaken identities, resulting in a comedy of errors. The makers are also planning to create a replica of Khan's residence Mannat at Film City for some scenes. The last time the King Khan was seen in a double role was in 'Duplicate', in which he played a naïve chef and a vicious criminal.

Ash planning mega bash for Big B? A

ishwarya Rai Bachchan is Bollywood's 'First Bahu' and this a responsibility she shoulders with style. Her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan will be turning 72 tomorrow (October 11), and Ash is going to make sure that it is a memorable one. She will be throwing a special party for him today (October 10), and this is something she has been planning for nearly three weeks in advance. She had meant it to be a surprise for Bachchan senior, but

he found out about it some days ago. Only close friends and family members have been invited for the do, which will be held in a five-star hotel. To make it special, Amitabh's favourite dishes will be on the menu and all his evergreen hits will be played at the party. Ash is simultaneously gearing up for her big screen comeback with Sanjay Gupta's 'Jazbaa'. Is there anything Aishwarya can't do?

chase. "We needed a good start to chase that score. We started off really well but after the run out of Ajinkya (Rahane) we could not stop losing wickets," he said. "While chasing 320 if you keep losing wickets in quick succession, it becomes difficult for the batsmen. We lost too many wickets in close succession. It was important to get partnerships going." West Indies started the series as underdogs but the Indian skipper said he was not at all surprised by the performance of the Caribbeans in the first ODI.

K

OCHI: Barring Bhuvneshwar Kumar all the Indian bowlers leaked runs in the first ODI against West Indies, but home team skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has backed his underfire bowling attack despite crashing to an embarrassing 124-run loss in the series opener here. India paid the price for some mediocre bowling as the Caribbeans, who were on the verge of boycotting the ODI, rode on Marlon Samuels' career-best equalling 126 not out to post a mammoth 321 for six at the Nehru Stadium. But Dhoni refused to put the blame on his bowlers, saying they did a "decent job". "What we have to evaluate is how the wicket was? I felt that it was a very good wicket to bat on. There was not much turn. Leaving aside Bhuvneshwar, most of our bowlers gave away runs. Considering this a total of 320 on this wicket, I feel our bowlers did a decent job," the skipper said. "I was quite happy with the death bowling. Our bowlers bowled quite consistently at the death. They maintained their lengths and we were able to put fielders in right areas. Overall, I am quite happy with the bowling," Dhoni said. "We bowled really well in

No threat to West Indies series: BCCI

NEW DELHI: The BCCI made it clear that there is absolutely "no threat" to India's ongoing home series against West Indies despite an acrimonious pay dispute between the visiting cricketers and its parent body which is yet to be resolved. "I want to clarify that there is no threat to the India versus West Indies series. The matches will go on as per schedule. In fact, I have spoken to a few officials from the WICB and have got assurance that there will be no disruption", BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel told PTI. "I got an e-mail from WICB chairman Dave Cameron, who thanked BCCI for playing a proactive role," he said. Patel said that the BCCI will be happy to help the WICB as a "mediator" once the series ends.

the death overs. The ground is not very big, so 320-325 is a par score on wicket like this." Medium pacer Bhuvneshwar was the most economical bowler for India, conceding just 38 runs off his 10 overs but failed to pick up any wicket. If India's bowling was

mediocre, their batting display can be turned as shoddy as the West Indies bundled out the hosts for just 197 runs in 41 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Asked Dhoni about India's batting performance, he said lack of partnerships and losing quick wickets rattled their

Dhoni sole Indian on Forbes’ most valuable athlete brand list N

EW YORK: India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the sole Indian sportsman to figure on Forbes' list of the world's most valuable athlete brands, a list that has been topped by American basketball player LeBron James and includes golfer Tiger Woods and tennis stars Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Dhoni is ranked fifth with a brand value of USD20 million in 2014, slightly down from USD21 million last year. Forbes said Dhoni signed bat sponsorship deals with Spartan Sports and Amity University in late 2013, reportedly worth a combined USD4 million annually, up from the USD1 million Reebok was paying previously. Forbes's Most Valuable Athlete Brands in Sports lists 10 athletes whose endorsement income exceeded the endorsement income earned

by their peers by the largest amount during the past year. James tops the list with a brand value of USD37 million in 2014. The NBA's biggest marketing star pulled in a total of USD53 million from endorsers like Nike, McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Upper Deck. The publication said for the first time since 2007, the top athlete brand is not Woods but James, who will be rejoining the Cleveland Cavaliers after fours season and two National Basketball Association (NBA) titles with the Miami Heat. James pulled in USD53 million off the court during the past year and his brand is worth USD37 million, which is the amount his endorsement and non-basketball earnings exceeded the average top 10 off the court earners in the NBA. Woods is ranked second and has a 2014 brand value of USD36 million.

"I think they batted really well. They have a fantastic ODI squad. They can bat till nine and they have got proper five bowlers besides a strong bench strength. All of them were quite experienced in bowling in death overs. They bowled consistently in the same areas. They have got the right kind of players," Dhoni said. Asked to analyse the reason behind India's embarrassing defeat, Dhoni said: "They batted really well. We could not get too many wickets with the new ball. "They were hitting the big shots. We

29

couldn't put pressure on them and gave them easy singles." Vice-captain Virat Kohli's scored just two runs yesterday, but Dhoni backed his deputy to return to form soon. "At the end of the day if you are looking to chase 300 plus runs, one or two players can't achieve it. He (Kohli) is having a lean period and I sure he will come back to form soon We have to give him time. This is something new for him. He will get back to his usual form and score big runs," Dhoni said.

The challenge is to maintain the standard,” said Rizvi. Coach Zakir Hussain was all praise of his players. “We dominated right throughout the game (final). ‘India should develop hockey from grassroots’

K

OCHI: Architect of India's memorable hockey win against Pakistan in the Asiad final, goalkeeper PR Sreejesh today said that the quality of domestic players was low and stressed the need to develop the sport from the grassroot level to get more international medals. "The quality of players at the domestic level is very low when they come to the Indian camp. From that level to reach the international level,

they will have to do lot of hard work at the Indian camp," Sreejesh said at a meet-the-press programme. The India vice-captain, who effected brilliant saves in the shoot-out helping the team clinch an Asian Games gold after 16 years, said it would take a year to reach international standards. Sreejesh said that Australia, have maintained their supremacy for quite sometime now.

OCHI (RUSSIA): Just days after Jules Bianchi's life-threatening accident at the rain-lashed Japanese Grand Prix, Formula One drives into another controversy this weekend with the opening practice sessions for the inaugural Russian Grand Prix. As the 25-year-old Frenchman battles for his life in Yokkaichi, the Formula One circus has set up camp at a new semi-street circuit created in the sprawling park built to host the 2014 winter Olympic Games last January. To many observers, in the outside world, F1's arrival in the Black Sea resort close to the Georgia border is

a cynical commercial exercise that, by association, endorses Russia's, and president Vladimir Putin's, behaviour in the conflicts in the Crimea and Ukraine this year. To Bernie Ecclestone, the widespread criticism and many calls to cancel this race, are ill-judged and ignored. "We are happy, the sponsors appear to be happy, so we carry on," F1's ringmaster told The Times. "No one has spoken to me about this race or told me that we cannot go. The sanctions do not affect us and what we are doing is not illegal." As the political arguments rage, the sport's leading figures are almost certain to restrict their comments on

the first new circuit introduced in the calendar since Austin, Texas, in 2012, to bland technical assessments while being more engaged by concerns for their stricken colleague and the circumstances of his accident. But amid the confusion, intensified by the prospect of the Russianowned Marussia team arriving without Bianchi and Russia's representative rookie driver Daniil Kvyat reacting to his promotion next season from Toro Rosso to Red Bull, as successor to Ferrari-bound four-time champion German Sebastian Vettel, a new event will unfold.
